- 0:24SPEAKER_00: It's time to step into your power.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Hi everybody, and welcome to another episode of Rise Up, Live Joy Your Way.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Today I wanted to talk about joy and just boosting joy in our lives.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: You know, at the time of this recording, we are still in the knee deep in the coronavirus pandemic, and there is just so much overwhelm and anxiety surrounding us whenever I'm talking to clients, and just you know, even just trying to go to the grocery store and just do a grocery shopping, you can just feel the tension and that strained energy everywhere that you go right now.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, for me personally, finding laughter and joy and just that playfulness when I can get those moments, it just is such a release and just feels so good.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: I know at my extended family, I have um many aunts and uncles and cousins, and one of the things that we've been trying to do is have a family, an extended family Zoom call once a week, which has been great because you know we'll we'll pick at each other and be sarcastic and whatnot, but you know, just getting playful with one another and just being in that moment of happy and joy.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: But then also during the course of our week, we've all we're all in a text message, a group text message together, and um, you know, we'll pass memes and and just jokes back and forth and just trying to be playful and and and and be in that place of joy and happiness.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: I know that I will be, you know, very um focused on work and I'll be in client sessions and doing my thing, and then I'll check my phone afterwards and I'll suddenly have you know 43 unread text messages, and at first I'm kind of like overwhelmed by it, but then I start scrolling through and I'm just I'm laughing, I'm laughing out loud, and it just is such great medicine, and um and it counteracts just the stress and anxiety that's coming with the times that we have right now.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: And I think even outside of the coronavirus pandemic, when we can remind ourselves to get into this place of joy in our daily lives, you know, because life it it it's I'm I don't want to say that it's hard, but you know, they're life's journey and there are ups, downs, twists, and turns.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: And when we can remember to add a little bit of joy and happiness into our lives when we can, it does help boost our ability to face those those challenges that we have in life.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: And it also helps our immune system.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: So, you know, there have been different studies that have shown that you know, happy people tech tech sometimes are actually healthier and can sometimes even be what we would quote unquote call successful.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Again, I say quote unquote successful because I truly wholeheartedly believe that success is not uniformly defined and should not be uniformly defined, but it should be defined by each person individually, because what is one person's success may not be for somebody else and vice versa.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: But regardless, being happy and having that joy brings that posity and it brings that vibration that you're living in.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: You're at that higher vibrational level, um, and it brings this sense of peace and contentment.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: You know, I like I said, during this extraordinarily stressful time, when I'm laughing, I mean, it's true.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Like I suddenly have this feeling of contentment that sort of kind of overcomes me.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And um, it feels good, it feels really good.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: So, what are some ways that we can increase happiness in our life?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Well, first and foremost is to always turn to yourself.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: You know, I I talk about that this all the time, that we we have to learn to become our own self-leader and you know let go of those external validations and external expectations and all the shoulds and the ought-os, but really make ourselves a priority, really practice self-love and self-compassion, really um get in touch with how we're feeling and what we need, and when we figure out how we're feeling and what we need to really then honor it, whatever we need to do to support what it is that we need, whether it means reaching out to a support system or self-soothing and doing things for ourselves, it's really this active practice of self-love and self-compassion.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Um, because when we make ourselves a priority from our health to our feelings to our emotions, that in and of itself raises our vibrational level, and we will find ourselves actually living more joyously and joyfully.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Um the second tip that I have towards really boosting joy in our lives is is the active practice of gratitude.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: And I'm calling it the active practice of gratitude because it's so easy to be like, yes, I'm grateful for, and then like the list of these, you know, this broad stroke thing.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: It's really getting knee deep and down dirty, get those fingernails dirty into all the things that you're actually grateful for.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: You know, like I'm grateful for chocolate chip cookies, that type of grateful, you know, really what are you grateful for and really practice it on a daily basis.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: You know, I oftentimes say to the people that I work with is something that I want to incorporate that in their lives, is each day before they go to bed, just take a few minutes to reflect.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Reflect on your day, reflect on what you're grateful for in that given day.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Um, because when we can turn our mindset from a place of either scarcity or just feeling, you know, not not in a I don't want to say not in a it it's it's not just scarcity, the mindset is just kind of like in this um, I don't have enough of this stuff, or I don't, I'm not doing the things that I need to be doing.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: When we can just turn our mindset to look at all the things that we're grateful for in our lives, it actually has the power to attract more positivity and it does improve our overall well-being.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: And it and it helps manage those negative emotions or those negative thoughts or the inner critic that wants to constantly go through our minds, because by shifting our mind into this state of gratitude, it actually displaces those negative thoughts for a little while and and boosts that boosts joy and happiness.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Um the third thing is to actually find joy in even the little things, you know.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: So I I'll say this often, I'll say, you know, I want people to celebrate not just the big wins, like those big goals that they've accomplished, but really also the small goals and the small little steps they've taken, because I truly believe that each of those small steps are what actually leads up to the big thing.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm an advocate for really celebrating all of the small wins.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: So it's also really celebrating all of the little things and all of the small moments that you have in your life.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: You know, when you are walking along the street and you're taking a walk and there's a beautiful sunset, it's really finding the joy in that.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Or, you know, just watching a butterfly flutter by, you know, just taking that in, being present, finding the joy in these little things that are passing by.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, just the other day, and my my I really do, honestly, you'll hear me say it a lot that my kids are such great teachers to me.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: But just the other morning, I walked into my youngest job daughter's room and she was there perched up on her dresser.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: It's right underneath her windows, and she had raised her blinds herself, and she was there just sitting quietly staring out the window.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: And I said, What are you doing?
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: And she looked back at me and she said, Oh, mommy, look, these two cardinals are just so beautiful, aren't they?
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: And she was just so peaceful sitting there watching this um female cardinal and this male cardinal sitting on the roof right outside of her window, and they were just chirping and singing away, and she was just enjoying it, and she found the joy in watching these two birds, and she got me sitting there watching with her, and I too was mesmerized by these two birds, and just finding that simple joy in watching them and hearing them and listening and being present in that moment, it created this feeling of calm and happiness that I then actually took through the rest of my day.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: It just started it off perfectly.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Um, another uh way to increase and boost joy in our lives is to really um surround ourselves with positive loving people.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: You know, our support system is so important, and it's um just equally important to make sure that we're surrounding ourselves with people who are supportive of us, who are loving of us, and that we let go of toxicity.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: You know, if there are relationships that are not serving us and are not for our best good and are bringing us down, it's recognizing that and then lovingly letting those relationships go and making sure that we do surround ourselves with people who um truly are supportive and that when we identify things that we are feeling and needing and we recognize one of the things we need is support, we are surrounded by the people who can and will help us and support us.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Um because this inevitably will increase our joy and our mood, and and by being around people who are equally positive and equally um supportive of us, you know, it it breeds it breeds that happiness, it breeds that love, and it breeds that joy.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: And um finally, I honestly do believe um in surrounding ourselves with nature.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: So just like I was talking about my daughter with watching the two birds, um, I find that when we can get outside and we can really ground ourselves in nature, really just be present in um be present, just be present, period.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: You know, I especially during this time there during this pandemic, one of the things that I have been talking about a lot is just um giving yourself um the space and grace, but also getting outside in nature, getting outside and going for a walk and really um really allowing yourself to enjoy just fresh air, just fresh air and um the sunshine and just being alive, you know, breathing in that fresh air, having that that warm sun on you, and just absorbing it and being present, you know, getting getting to that point where we can get outside and we can get in touch with our five senses.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: You know, what do I hear?
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Do I hear the birds chirping?
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Do I um what do I smell?
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: Um, right now, for instance, if I step outside, I can start smelling some of the flowers blooming, and it is an awesome, wonderful smell.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's really when we get out there, just get in touch with those five senses.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: You know, what do I hear?
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: What do I see?
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: What do I what what can I touch?
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: What do I taste?
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: What's the taste in my mouth?
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Just getting present in the moment because when we do that, our mind settles down, and we can um inevitably what ends up happening is our playfulness and our joyfulness just expands exponentially.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: And so when we can actually do this and we can boost that joy and boost that happiness, you know what what it does is it actually fills us up, right?
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: It's an act of self-care and self-love, and it fills us up.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: And when we're when we're full, when we're coming from that place of fullness, then we have something to give the people in our lives.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: And so not only is the practice of boosting joy and playfulness important for our own self-care, truthfully, there's the exponential factor to it.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: By us doing that, we then also are there for other people in our lives.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: We have healthier relationships, and then the people that we have relationships with and that we're touching with our joyfulness and our playfulness, they then touch other people in their lives, right?
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: And so it just keeps growing and expanding beyond just where we are, but it becomes this um almost a spider web of joy and happiness that can keep spreading across the world.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: And when we think of it that way, we can see how how important it is, how important it is to just find ways to allow ourselves to experience a little more joy, a little more playfulness each and every day.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: So, with that, I will say that if you have any thoughts or you have any questions or you are looking for support, feel free to email me at contact at itme.com, or you can find me on the web at www.itsauthenticme.com.
