- Lucas: Ciao Luna, welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo! Luna: Ciao Lucas! I'm so ready for episode 80. That's a big number! Lucas: It is. And today we have a fun topic. We're going to talk about music. Music vocabulary. Luna: Oh, I love music. Let's learn some words. Lucas: So first, a very easy word. 'La musica' means the music. Can you say that? Luna: La musica. Lucas: Perfect. 'La musica' is feminine. So 'la'. Luna: La musica. I love la musica. Lucas: Good. Now a song is 'la canzone'. Try it. Luna: La canzone. Lucas: Yes. La canzone. So 'I like this song' would be 'Mi piace questa canzone'. Luna: Mi piace questa canzone. Lucas: Excellent. If you want to talk about the singer, it's 'il cantante' for a male singer, or 'la cantante' for a female. Luna: Il cantante. Like my favorite Italian singer. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's learn two verbs. 'Ascoltare' means to listen. For example, 'I listen to music' is 'Ascolto la musica'. Luna: Ascolto la musica. That's easy. Lucas: And 'suonare' means to play an instrument. 'He plays the guitar' is 'Lui suona la chitarra'. Luna: Lui suona la chitarra. So 'suonare' is for instruments, not for playing a game. Lucas: Right. 'Giocare' is for games, 'suonare' is for music. So let's practice a bit. Luna, do you listen to music? Luna: Sì, ascolto la musica ogni giorno. I listen to music every day. Lucas: And do you play an instrument? Luna: No, I don't suonare. But I love to ascoltare canzoni. Lucas: That's great. Okay, let's do a mini scene. Imagine you're talking to a friend about a song you like. Luna: Okay. Lucas: So you say: 'Questa canzone è bella. Il cantante è bravo.' This song is nice. The singer is good. Luna: Questa canzone è bella. Il cantante è bravo. That feels good. Lucas: Now let's put it all together. 'Mi piace questa canzone. Ascolto la musica ogni giorno. Il cantante suona la chitarra.' Can you repeat that? Luna: Mi piace questa canzone. Ascolto la musica ogni giorno. Il cantante suona la chitarra. Lucas: So good. You're really getting it. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I feel like I could have a little chat about music now. Lucas: That's the idea. So let's do a quick review. What does 'la musica' mean? Luna: The music. Lucas: And 'la canzone'? Luna: The song. Lucas: Il cantante? Luna: The singer. Lucas: And the verbs 'ascoltare' and 'suonare'? Luna: Ascoltare is to listen, suonare is to play an instrument. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's practice with one more example. 'I listen to a song.' How would you say that? Luna: Ascolto una canzone. Lucas: Yes. And 'The singer plays the piano.'? Luna: Il cantante suona il pianoforte. Lucas: Wonderful. You've got it. Now you can talk about music a little in Italian. Keep practicing these words. Listen to some Italian songs and see if you can understand them. Luna: That's a great idea. I'm going to search for 'canzoni italiane' tonight. Lucas: Do it.
