- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello, virgins. I know for you it's Thursday, but for
- 0:04Speaker 1: us it's Tuesday, which is election day in New York City.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And I hope that you voted.
- 0:12Speaker 2: And if you didn't, you're a pussy. I was talking
- 0:16Speaker 2: to somebody yesterday at the UGG party, you just seca
- 0:19Speaker 2: really fabulous organizer who works with JVP and the DSA,
- 0:25Speaker 2: and she was saying that if you live in Bushwick,
- 0:29Speaker 2: that some exit poles were showing that the margin of
- 0:34Speaker 2: victory could be as small as sixty people you.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Got too well. I mean, there's no point as being like,
- 0:43Speaker 1: go vote, because yeah, it's too late. It's too late.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So but the thing is, if you hear this message
- 0:49Speaker 2: now and you didn't vote and we lost, you should
- 0:52Speaker 2: feel really bad.
- 0:53Speaker 1: You should because you were one of sixty the scum
- 0:56Speaker 1: of the earth.
- 0:57Speaker 2: You were one of sixty fagots in Brooklyn who actually
- 1:01Speaker 2: could have made the difference and didn't.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And so that you know that that really small margin
- 1:08Speaker 1: kind of helps me understand why I was invited to
- 1:12Speaker 1: meet Mayor Zara Mundani and the the other folks on
- 1:18Speaker 1: the Democratic Socialists late on Friday night. Honey, were you
- 1:23Speaker 1: were you surprised when I like randomly sent you a
- 1:26Speaker 1: photo of me and.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Zar on No on Friday, not really no. So I've
- 1:30Speaker 2: been told from organizers that that early voting numbers were
- 1:35Speaker 2: really really low, and I think that they had not
- 1:38Speaker 2: been expecting that because obviously the DSA's ground game is
- 1:44Speaker 2: so good like and I think that they have really
- 1:48Speaker 2: really really poured a lot into these various kind of
- 1:54Speaker 2: like city council with these these congressional district elections and
- 2:00Speaker 2: and but yeah, no voter turnout among young people.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Was doo doo kaka. So that's that I think that
- 2:06Speaker 1: I was.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I was asked via signal chats, et cetera, do I
- 2:10Speaker 2: know any famous people to kind of show up to
- 2:15Speaker 2: these phone banks, and so I knew that they were
- 2:19Speaker 2: recruiting internet famous divas and q rosamu.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yeah to hear the call. On Friday, I got a
- 2:29Speaker 1: message from a friend who I think works with uh
- 2:36Speaker 1: Zoran's team in some way, who invited me to what
- 2:41Speaker 1: was sold as a dinner, which is kind of why
- 2:46Speaker 1: I went. I thought it was going to be like
- 2:47Speaker 1: a chic you know, dinner with with Zoron and the Slate.
- 2:53Speaker 1: What it was actually was a meet and greet with
- 2:55Speaker 1: or Dervs. I showed up it this restaurant in Bushwick.
- 3:01Speaker 1: There was a line of people outside. I made friends
- 3:05Speaker 1: with the girl standing in line next to me because
- 3:07Speaker 1: we were both wearing We were both wearing head to
- 3:12Speaker 1: toe Asimiyaki and uh and tom Ford for Gucci bags.
- 3:17Speaker 1: So I like made a new friend. She's great.
- 3:21Speaker 2: You know the the uniform for waiting in line to
- 3:23Speaker 2: meet Yeah, of course.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Well we were obviously the best dressed people there besides
- 3:28Speaker 1: Queen Jean, who I got to meet.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Oh my god, did she have her tony?
- 3:32Speaker 1: She did not have her tony. But but but my
- 3:35Speaker 1: my friend who had invited me, when they were starting
- 3:38Speaker 1: to bring people in to meet, Zoron was like, can
- 3:42Speaker 1: everyone please move aside for Queen Gee? And she has
- 3:45Speaker 1: a tony.
- 3:45Speaker 2: She has a tony that Zoron had like a pride
- 3:49Speaker 2: party earlier this month, And it was the day after
- 3:54Speaker 2: the Tonys and Zoron you know, called her out in
- 3:57Speaker 2: his speech and he was like, it is an honor
- 3:59Speaker 2: to have Queen Jean here, and we were more than
- 4:02Speaker 2: willing to make an exception for her plus one tony.
- 4:06Speaker 2: And it literally like you turn around and g is
- 4:09Speaker 2: like standing there hold like lifting holding her tony up
- 4:13Speaker 2: with one hand. She had the tony with her.
- 4:15Speaker 1: It was I wish, I wish she'd brought it.
- 4:17Speaker 2: If I had a tony, I would hold I would
- 4:19Speaker 2: it would be in my.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Purse, it would be I would turn it into a
- 4:22Speaker 1: bag charm like a la boo boo would be really heavy. Though.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Uh so we you know, we're we're let upstairs at
- 4:33Speaker 1: this restaurant to this like little rooftop space. We're like
- 4:35Speaker 1: mingling getting drinks. There's our derves. I had a really
- 4:38Speaker 1: fabulous oyster. And then Zorn comes out talks to us,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and then they bring the whole slate into this little
- 4:46Speaker 1: room and tell us that we're going to line up
- 4:48Speaker 1: and each get a chance to go in make some
- 4:51Speaker 1: content with them. Because yes, this was primarily like an
- 4:54Speaker 1: influencer event. I think there were. They were specifically trying
- 4:58Speaker 1: to get more young people to turn out out to vote.
- 5:02Speaker 1: We it was like very disorganized and weirdly I wound
- 5:05Speaker 1: up right at the front of the line. So that
- 5:07Speaker 1: worked out really well, okay, because if I if I
- 5:10Speaker 1: had had to wait another ten minutes, I would have
- 5:14Speaker 1: simply left. Yeah, but I didn't, so I got to
- 5:19Speaker 1: meet the whole slate, including Zoran. I made a little
- 5:23Speaker 1: video with them, which you can see on my Instagram.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I thought it was very cute.
- 5:28Speaker 2: It looked so good.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah, And I had alternate questions I was going to ask,
- 5:33Speaker 1: like I was going to ask Zora on team Edward
- 5:36Speaker 1: or team Jacob, but I liked the question I ended
- 5:40Speaker 1: up with better.
- 5:41Speaker 2: They were like, you have ninety seconds ago.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Yeah. And then after I finished filming with them, I
- 5:46Speaker 1: did tell the mayor that, you know, my grandma had
- 5:53Speaker 1: recently passed, and that she, you know, had was born
- 5:57Speaker 1: and raised in New York and raised her family there
- 5:59Speaker 1: before moving to Florida in her fifties and that and
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, this is true. She and my grandma was
- 6:06Speaker 1: a staunch Democrat, and I really tried to push her
- 6:10Speaker 1: more towards being a leftist in the later years of
- 6:13Speaker 1: her life. But she was so excited about Zoran becoming
- 6:20Speaker 1: our mayor and just what it meant for the city.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And I told him that, and he thought that was
- 6:24Speaker 1: very sweet, and we had a really nice little moment.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And so I'm happy I got to share that because
- 6:29Speaker 1: I knew she would have been really happy that I
- 6:32Speaker 1: got to meet him. So hopefully everyone voted and the
- 6:37Speaker 1: people we wanted to win one and the people we
- 6:39Speaker 1: wanted to lose lost. But you know, we'll see.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Really weird to be sending this message from the past
- 6:49Speaker 2: into the future, but hey.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And it's just a it's a good reminder. Like you know,
- 6:56Speaker 1: I think I've been saying this is with the world,
- 6:58Speaker 1: with our countries in the state that it is. I
- 7:03Speaker 1: do think funneling your energy and attention into local politics
- 7:08Speaker 1: and intercommunity in your community and things that you can
- 7:11Speaker 1: actually have a tangible outcome on is what's really important.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Because yes, it's sometimes good to scream into the void
- 7:22Speaker 1: and be anihilist, but.
- 7:25Speaker 2: But mostly not, but mostly not, but mostly not. I
- 7:29Speaker 2: have a related and verurgeon in question. Yes, is Rania
- 7:36Speaker 2: a Republican or a Democrat? And and which one is
- 7:41Speaker 2: Alison and it and we have to pick who is who?
- 7:45Speaker 1: Okay, this is I'm gonna actually try to answer this
- 7:48Speaker 1: question in good faith.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I I honestly have no idea, but you know the
- 7:53Speaker 2: world much better and I look.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Forward, I would I would say I don't. Okay, obviously
- 8:01Speaker 1: this is a different political system. It's a monarchy. These
- 8:04Speaker 1: are not elected representatives. I think because the entire schism
- 8:10Speaker 1: that drives the plot of House of the Dragon, this
- 8:13Speaker 1: Targarian civil war that is known as the Dance of
- 8:15Speaker 1: the Dragons, is about Raniera being usurped because she is
- 8:20Speaker 1: a woman. I would say that would I guess maybe
- 8:25Speaker 1: kind of automatically automatically make her a Democrat. And then
- 8:28Speaker 1: the people you know, trying to preserve the patriarchy are
- 8:33Speaker 1: Republicans or I guess maybe we would say not democrat
- 8:36Speaker 1: or Republican, but conservative versus liberal, right, But really they're
- 8:40Speaker 1: kind of both centrists because they just want to keep
- 8:44Speaker 1: like Raniera doesn't want to you know, help the small
- 8:47Speaker 1: folk or like you know, make grands, sweeping political changes
- 8:52Speaker 1: that will actually improve people's lives. She just wants the power.
- 8:56Speaker 1: She wants to be at the top. Yes, yes, in the.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Most Democrats as well, so that still applies.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and yeah, so that well, I'm saying that's because
- 9:06Speaker 1: like I don't think she's a leftist, you know, and
- 9:10Speaker 1: also Raniera is. But I guess the one thing that
- 9:17Speaker 1: does make me feel like, okay, maybe she is like
- 9:19Speaker 1: sort of like a well intentioned Democrat, is that at
- 9:22Speaker 1: least in the show. You know, as we learn in
- 9:24Speaker 1: the first season, she is driven by this secondary motivation
- 9:29Speaker 1: or I guess maybe like what she sees is her
- 9:31Speaker 1: like true purpose, which is that she needs to ensure
- 9:35Speaker 1: that a Targarian from her line specifically is sitting the
- 9:40Speaker 1: iron throne when the Long Night comes, as her father
- 9:44Speaker 1: passed down Agon's dream to her in the first season
- 9:47Speaker 1: in what was a departure from the books, but like
- 9:50Speaker 1: George R. Martin has kind of signed off on it,
- 9:52Speaker 1: this idea that like there was a prophecy about the
- 9:55Speaker 1: White Walkers and it was passed down through the Targarians,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and so Varania is not just you know, trying to
- 10:02Speaker 1: become queen because she wants to be queen, but also
- 10:05Speaker 1: because there is a true purpose to a Targarian being
- 10:09Speaker 1: in power, and this the dance of the Dragons, this
- 10:14Speaker 1: target and civil war is what leads to the Dragons
- 10:17Speaker 1: dying and the Targarians being out of power when the
- 10:20Speaker 1: Long Night comes.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And I okay, like, I'm like actually so much more
- 10:26Speaker 2: invested in this very silly analysis than like some recapping,
- 10:31Speaker 2: which is often hard to follow for me. But like
- 10:34Speaker 2: there's also this thing of like bloodlines on Alison's side
- 10:41Speaker 2: and the illegitimacy of some of Rania's descendants called the Queen.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Of Bastards, which is a hat that I got at
- 10:53Speaker 1: HBO's House of the Dragon premiere event the other night.
- 10:56Speaker 2: He was on a boat, which you famously do not do.
- 11:00Speaker 2: So don't do any function wherein you cannot leave immediately.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Well or did the boat not leave?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Well, the boat did leave, but it was for a
- 11:09Speaker 1: specific and short amount of time. It was only a
- 11:12Speaker 1: forty five minute cruise around the like Harbor, peer whatever.
- 11:18Speaker 1: So I knew it was going to be on and
- 11:22Speaker 1: off scinct succinct. Yeah, So I went to this premiere
- 11:26Speaker 1: event on Sunday. There was a sunset sale and then
- 11:32Speaker 1: a screening of the first episode. It was kind of overwhelming,
- 11:38Speaker 1: but fun. It it's always fun to watch a show
- 11:41Speaker 1: like that with a live audience, especially like an episode
- 11:44Speaker 1: like this season premiere episode, which was action packed. It
- 11:50Speaker 1: was very fun to be screaming along with everyone and
- 11:53Speaker 1: like it was basically like being on Twitter watching the
- 11:55Speaker 1: episode but in real life.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:59Speaker 1: And there were like lots of little photo ops. I
- 12:02Speaker 1: got some T shirts and there was an iron throne
- 12:05Speaker 1: you could take a picture with I was not going
- 12:07Speaker 1: to wait in the line for that. I did get
- 12:11Speaker 1: a bunch of swag, including that hat and this Jasira's candle.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I just shocked that you got in the boat.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Honestly, I okay, I was shocked that. So they told
- 12:24Speaker 1: us to dress comfortably, which of course I did not.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I wore heels, and then I was expecting sort of
- 12:31Speaker 1: a doll invasion situation where there would be twinks kind
- 12:35Speaker 1: of helping me get on the boat. And there were
- 12:39Speaker 1: crew members standing on the side of the ramp that
- 12:41Speaker 1: I had to walk down at almost a nine degree
- 12:45Speaker 1: angle to get on the boat, but they did not
- 12:48Speaker 1: like reach out to help me, and I really had
- 12:50Speaker 1: to just like do it myself.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I'm sorry that sounds really unglamorous. You should be treated
- 12:57Speaker 2: like a queen.
- 12:58Speaker 1: But getting off the boat, I was serving cunt because
- 13:04Speaker 1: it was much easier to uscend than it had been
- 13:06Speaker 1: to descend, and I was, yeah, I was like I
- 13:10Speaker 1: was walking off the boat with Star Emersu and we
- 13:14Speaker 1: were we were like cleaning out together. That was fun.
- 13:18Speaker 1: It was a good night. It was a good episode.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I do think it's the best episode of the show.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I also do think it should have been the season
- 13:25Speaker 1: finale of last season.
- 13:27Speaker 2: It's the best you think it's the best episode of
- 13:29Speaker 2: the entire series so far. Yeah, oh my god, I
- 13:36Speaker 2: need to watch it. Not with my laptop open. I
- 13:39Speaker 2: need to re engage because I spent I had spent
- 13:43Speaker 2: like the all of last week kind of rewatching season two,
- 13:47Speaker 2: which is actually so much juicier than I remember, even
- 13:50Speaker 2: though it is also often boring and I do, but
- 13:55Speaker 2: I I it is like so delicious and I was
- 13:58Speaker 2: like really excited to watch this episode by the time
- 14:01Speaker 2: it came out, but unfortunately I've been balancing a lot
- 14:03Speaker 2: of work and so I need to give it my
- 14:05Speaker 2: undivided attention.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Yeah, you got a lot going on, and like I
- 14:08Speaker 1: don't necessarily want to do like a beat for beat
- 14:10Speaker 1: recap that's not really interesting, Like this episode is essentially
- 14:14Speaker 1: a big naval battle and people die. But there's a
- 14:18Speaker 1: couple things in the episode that really struck me that
- 14:21Speaker 1: I wanted to like tap in on.
- 14:25Speaker 2: As like maybe maybe it would be helpful to like
- 14:29Speaker 2: like maybe as if we're not treating it as a recap,
- 14:32Speaker 2: it's almost like we're kind of projecting themes we always
- 14:37Speaker 2: do predictions. I'm just describing this for virgins that either
- 14:41Speaker 2: do or do not watch House and Dragon to kind
- 14:44Speaker 2: of levels on like how we kind of approach certain
- 14:47Speaker 2: kinds of genre TV watching, which I think is like
- 14:50Speaker 2: it's fun to get a little reddity, I think is
- 14:52Speaker 2: what we like to do.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Yeah, So, the the thing that stood out the most
- 14:57Speaker 1: for me in this episode, I loved the.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Scene aside from the milf incest.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Well, yeah, well that that's for different show. Oh well,
- 15:05Speaker 1: oh my god that no, there's also milf insusts in
- 15:07Speaker 1: this episode. Oh my god. I was thinking about the
- 15:10Speaker 1: vampire and then but the mother's Son incest down both
- 15:14Speaker 1: of the TV shows I'm currently watching. Of course, Bayla.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I really love the scenes with Bayla and Sheep Stealer
- 15:23Speaker 1: the Wild Dragon. But I think the thing that I
- 15:26Speaker 1: found the most stunning was Emma Darcy's acting as Raniera,
- 15:32Speaker 1: so very pivotally, very pivotally. In this episode, there's this
- 15:35Speaker 1: naval battle going on. Reniera wants to hop on her
- 15:38Speaker 1: dragon go fly into the fray, and her son Jasas
- 15:43Speaker 1: is like absolutely not, has the King's guard lock her
- 15:47Speaker 1: in her room and flies off on his dragon, and
- 15:51Speaker 1: ultimately at the end of the episode spoiler alert is killed,
- 15:55Speaker 1: and there's this scene of Raniera in her chambers realizing
- 15:59Speaker 1: what's happened, and she has changed into her writing letters
- 16:05Speaker 1: to write off to battle, and when she realizes she
- 16:08Speaker 1: can't go and what's happening, she takes the dress that
- 16:11Speaker 1: she has changed out of and puts it down on
- 16:12Speaker 1: the table and starts stabbing it and slashing it. And
- 16:17Speaker 1: it was such a powerful scene and it really, to
- 16:19Speaker 1: me is like not to be too woke, but this
- 16:24Speaker 1: is the reason why you cast someone with gender to
- 16:28Speaker 1: play a character with gender, because, as I said, as
- 16:32Speaker 1: we first started talking about House of the Dragon, this
- 16:35Speaker 1: entire show, this entire part of the Targerian dynasty, is
- 16:40Speaker 1: about the succession crisis that is driven by misogyny. Raniera
- 16:44Speaker 1: is a character who, had it not been for her womanhood,
- 16:49Speaker 1: would be the rightful heir, and she is a victim
- 16:53Speaker 1: of this patriarchal misogyny. Emma Darcy is a non binary
- 16:57Speaker 1: actor and in that moment when they were stabbing that dress,
- 17:02Speaker 1: I could just I could just imagine what from their
- 17:06Speaker 1: own life they were pulling from and putting into that
- 17:09Speaker 1: and how effective that made it. And I know we
- 17:15Speaker 1: like to we like to make jokes about you known
- 17:19Speaker 1: cis non binary and cis people playing trans people and
- 17:22Speaker 1: blah blah blah, and actors are always like anyone should
- 17:25Speaker 1: be able to play anyone, and yes, that's true, but
- 17:27Speaker 1: I do think you when you cast an actor who
- 17:31Speaker 1: has this something extra in connection with the character, you're
- 17:36Speaker 1: going to get a little bit of extra special sauce.
- 17:39Speaker 1: And that is that was really like such a such
- 17:43Speaker 1: a great example of that for me in an episode
- 17:46Speaker 1: that was like so overstuffed with these big, larger than
- 17:50Speaker 1: life moments. And then she like she has this line
- 17:54Speaker 1: of dialogue right after that where she says, and I
- 17:56Speaker 1: think this is supposed to I think this is a
- 17:58Speaker 1: quote that is maybe stolen from Queen Elizabeth where she says,
- 18:03Speaker 1: I may have the weak and feeble body of a woman,
- 18:05Speaker 1: but I have the spirit of a king, which some
- 18:09Speaker 1: people are like mad about because they're like, you shouldn't
- 18:12Speaker 1: call women weak and feeble. And it's like, babe, shut up.
- 18:17Speaker 2: This was when jillion years ago, in a non existent
- 18:21Speaker 2: fantasy world with dravers with dragons idiots. I also, okay, whatever,
- 18:27Speaker 2: I I yeah love Ranier a team Ranhier, even though
- 18:32Speaker 2: like she is kind of an establishment democrat who only
- 18:36Speaker 2: cares about poor people if they can get dragons for her.
- 18:39Speaker 1: And I do think something that Emma Darcy has been
- 18:42Speaker 1: saying in interviews is that by the end of the
- 18:46Speaker 1: season they think that the audience is really going to
- 18:50Speaker 1: be challenged to keep supporting Rnier, like it's going to
- 18:54Speaker 1: be harder and harder to agree with the decisions she's making.
- 18:58Speaker 2: And it feels like it's been that way like last season.
- 19:01Speaker 2: It just it feels like turn turn and turn in turn.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Like everyone the cards have almost never felt like they
- 19:09Speaker 2: were stacked in Renier's favor, and everyone is like doubtful
- 19:13Speaker 2: of her leadership. I feel like well.
- 19:17Speaker 1: In world, in World, But I think Emma Darcy was
- 19:20Speaker 1: talking specifically about the audience and that way, and that
- 19:23Speaker 1: by the end of the season we may no longer
- 19:26Speaker 1: be on her side. Now interesting, I don't foresee a
- 19:30Speaker 1: reality in which that happens. I also I know what
- 19:33Speaker 1: happens in the in Fire and Blood, the text that
- 19:38Speaker 1: the show is based off of, so like I know
- 19:40Speaker 1: the rough details of how the rest of the war
- 19:43Speaker 1: plays out. But Raniera could do literally anything and I
- 19:47Speaker 1: would support her. And also there might be adaptational changes,
- 19:51Speaker 1: because in fact, there's a really big change in this
- 19:54Speaker 1: episode in how this final battle and j just Sarahs's
- 19:57Speaker 1: death plays out, which really kind of made the episode
- 20:03Speaker 1: more thrilling, even though it ultimately still ended the way
- 20:06Speaker 1: it does in the book. How It got there was
- 20:10Speaker 1: very different, and I really liked that change.
- 20:14Speaker 2: I want to know how you're feeling about the I
- 20:20Speaker 2: guess what feels like unwieldy amounts of dragon fighting dragons
- 20:27Speaker 2: that are not as controllable or malleable as previous iterations
- 20:33Speaker 2: of the dragons. And then I also kind of want
- 20:35Speaker 2: to know about this snaky guy that I want to
- 20:39Speaker 2: know what your feelings are on this sneaky guy that's
- 20:41Speaker 2: kind of bringing a gone to deliverance, et cetera.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Okay, first of all, he got hotter between seasons or
- 20:47Speaker 1: is it?
- 20:47Speaker 2: No? No, girl, he's not. He's not hot at all.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Okay, So on the on the wild Dragons of it all.
- 20:56Speaker 1: So that so that is one of the biggest changes
- 20:59Speaker 1: the show show has made. The character Raina who claims
- 21:06Speaker 1: sheep stealer the wild Dragon. We see that at the
- 21:08Speaker 1: beginning of this episode in the in the book in
- 21:12Speaker 1: Fire and Blood, that is a completely separate character, and
- 21:15Speaker 1: a lot of people have been upset that they were
- 21:18Speaker 1: seemingly merging these characters into one. It is now confirmed
- 21:22Speaker 1: that happened. There is no Nettles, Raina is Nettles. But
- 21:28Speaker 1: what that led to in this episode, this big change
- 21:30Speaker 1: is that Raina and Sheep Stealer are in the book,
- 21:36Speaker 1: are not present at the Battle of the Gullet. So
- 21:39Speaker 1: that whole sequence where Raina flies in and is ultimately
- 21:45Speaker 1: the reason that Jessis ends up getting killed because Bayla
- 21:50Speaker 1: and Moondancer have to come in and save him, that
- 21:54Speaker 1: none of that happens in the book. So that was
- 21:56Speaker 1: very thrilling, and it almost made me for a second think, Okay,
- 22:01Speaker 1: maybe is Jasarah's gonna survive, Maybe Baylow will die instead,
- 22:06Speaker 1: maybe Raina will die maybe, but no, we still ultimately
- 22:09Speaker 1: end up at the same place with Jace dead, but
- 22:14Speaker 1: there's now all of these different steaks, and I like that.
- 22:17Speaker 1: We're also complicating the idea of what a dragon rider
- 22:20Speaker 1: is because you know, in the last season we introduced
- 22:24Speaker 1: the dragon Seeds, who are these bastards with Targarian blood
- 22:27Speaker 1: who are now dragon riders, and so now we're seeing
- 22:32Speaker 1: the wild dragons and this. You know, Raina was raised
- 22:38Speaker 1: in these Targarian customs of these dragons with saddles, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 1: who follow Valerian commands, and that's what she's expecting when
- 22:47Speaker 1: she hops on this wild dragon. Who I saw someone
- 22:49Speaker 1: who said, like, damn, she wasn't in a saddle her.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I know, her pelvic floor was torn up.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Oh my god, I know That's what I was thinking about. Honestly,
- 22:57Speaker 2: I was like, that is like, you are raw dogging it.
- 23:00Speaker 1: But she's like, you know, screaming these commands at this dragon,
- 23:04Speaker 1: and this dragon's like, bitch, I don't know what you're saying.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I have no idea what you're saying. Oh, I mean, yeah,
- 23:12Speaker 2: it's it's. It was kind of like, to me, the
- 23:15Speaker 2: all of the New Dragon writers from last season and
- 23:18Speaker 2: now and now this season, to me, are the the
- 23:22Speaker 2: the kind of the most thrilling and compelling parts of
- 23:24Speaker 2: the show.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Not the mother son incest.
- 23:27Speaker 2: No, yeah, I mean the mother's incest. I like incest.
- 23:30Speaker 2: I'm so desensitized to you in this show by this
- 23:32Speaker 2: point that I was just kind of like, yeah, of
- 23:34Speaker 2: course he wants to.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Fuck her, okay, but I watch your reading.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Her pussy of course she's gonna use her pussy for
- 23:41Speaker 2: power once again.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Okay, here's I want your read on this, because I
- 23:46Speaker 1: actually thought in that scene, obviously Aimon t has mommy issues.
- 23:52Speaker 1: We saw him, uh. I think it was last season
- 23:55Speaker 1: with a sex worker in one of the brothels who
- 23:58Speaker 1: was like tree him, like she was his mom, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: we saw his cock and we saw his cock so clearly,
- 24:05Speaker 1: like there is and like you know, Targarians are gonna
- 24:08Speaker 1: targari and like there is some weird stuff there. But
- 24:12Speaker 1: I also kind of felt like I almost felt like
- 24:15Speaker 1: he knew in that moment that Alison was trying to
- 24:18Speaker 1: manipulate him. I definitely felt that, and that he was
- 24:22Speaker 1: sort of calling her bluff by kissing her. I like
- 24:27Speaker 1: seeing like I think he wanted to see, Like, Okay,
- 24:31Speaker 1: it kind of seems like she's lying. Let me do
- 24:33Speaker 1: something really extreme and if she goes along with it,
- 24:37Speaker 1: then I'll know she's trying to fuck with me.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Honestly. On the act, the acting level is so fierce,
- 24:44Speaker 2: and I mean in a few different scenes where there's power,
- 24:46Speaker 2: there's these kind of like who is betraying who kind
- 24:49Speaker 2: of conversations, But specifically with that one, I had a
- 24:53Speaker 2: really hard time ascertaining like who like it is Aimon
- 24:58Speaker 2: who has not much got past him? You know what
- 25:01Speaker 2: I mean, I in my opinion, he may be crazy,
- 25:05Speaker 2: but I don't think that much is getting past him.
- 25:07Speaker 2: And I think he is he is kind of inclined
- 25:11Speaker 2: to distrust. And so if Alison is coming, you know,
- 25:16Speaker 2: at him after having disappeared for a couple of days,
- 25:19Speaker 2: literally like double double crossed, I mean, she's literally playing
- 25:24Speaker 2: both sides essentially.
- 25:25Speaker 1: If she she she signed away his life, she traded
- 25:28Speaker 1: his life for Helena's.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Yes, and and so like and exactly and and so like. Uh,
- 25:36Speaker 2: but in that moment, I also am like, I mean
- 25:38Speaker 2: and actually maybe I missed a detail, So you can
- 25:40Speaker 2: tell me if I'm like, if this has actually been answered.
- 25:43Speaker 2: But I'm kind of like, is she lying to Raniera or.
- 25:48Speaker 1: No, she's being she was being honest with Rnier. She's
- 25:51Speaker 1: really trying to broke her She's really trying to brok
- 25:53Speaker 1: her this piece. Okay, but but when she gets back
- 25:56Speaker 1: to King's Landing, all of the pieces that were in
- 25:59Speaker 1: place when she left are now totally in disarray. Yes,
- 26:04Speaker 1: and so she's trying to do whatever she can to
- 26:07Speaker 1: manipulate aimand into getting out of the Capitol, and that's
- 26:10Speaker 1: why I think he's like, you know, he's very shrewd,
- 26:14Speaker 1: and so I do. I would not be surprised if
- 26:18Speaker 1: he's fucking with her.
- 26:20Speaker 2: I definitely think he's fucking with her. I definitely think
- 26:23Speaker 2: he's too smart for it. And I think he'll continue
- 26:27Speaker 2: to either play her or let her think that she's
- 26:33Speaker 2: playing him until he kills her, until he doesn't need
- 26:36Speaker 2: her anymore, and.
- 26:37Speaker 1: He kills but Olivia Cook like the look on her
- 26:40Speaker 1: face as he's kissing her, or like after he left,
- 26:43Speaker 1: what she's able to do with just her eyes is
- 26:47Speaker 1: so insane.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Yes, she really gives it, like so there's all of
- 26:53Speaker 2: the all of the different layers of betrayal are in
- 26:56Speaker 2: her eyes.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Also, big ups to Abigail Thorn who plays oh My
- 27:02Speaker 1: Sharrock lohar Is I believe the character's name, who is
- 27:07Speaker 1: you know, the leader of this mercenary company. Uh. She
- 27:11Speaker 1: really had so much to do in this episode, like
- 27:14Speaker 1: some amazing action stunt work, really great fighting, so sickening,
- 27:20Speaker 1: and I like that she's playing I like that there's
- 27:24Speaker 1: a transactress playing as Cis character who is like has
- 27:29Speaker 1: also has like weird androgynous gender stuff like oh yeah,
- 27:33Speaker 1: so many cool layers to that.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah. I mean I don't know if you saw
- 27:38Speaker 2: her outfit at the premiere, but she wore like armor
- 27:41Speaker 2: and like did some of the step step and repeat
- 27:44Speaker 2: photos flexing, like like doing muscle pose, and I was like,
- 27:49Speaker 2: her bodies, you are my fucking bitch. This is literally
- 27:53Speaker 2: the representation that I have a pretty much never gotten
- 27:57Speaker 2: like that I have always wanted, Like Abigail Floren is
- 28:00Speaker 2: so fucking sickening, and yeah, her character immediate favorite.
- 28:05Speaker 1: And she had an amazing spoiler alert death scene. If
- 28:10Speaker 1: you now that she you know, has gone from the show,
- 28:13Speaker 1: I'm interested to see what she does next. You can
- 28:15Speaker 1: also watch her YouTube channel, Philosophy Tube. She does really
- 28:20Speaker 1: great video essays about different tenets of philosophy that are
- 28:25Speaker 1: all kind of aimed around like sharing her philosophy degree
- 28:28Speaker 1: with you know, like an audience who you know doesn't
- 28:31Speaker 1: have that kind of education or access. It was a
- 28:36Speaker 1: good It was a good episode. It made me excited
- 28:38Speaker 1: about the season. I was like feeling kind of whatever
- 28:42Speaker 1: about House of the Dragon coming back because I was
- 28:44Speaker 1: pretty disappointed with season two. But times but now I'm
- 28:50Speaker 1: excited again. It's not quite as it's not. I'm not
- 28:54Speaker 1: as upset, I'm not as immediately into it as I
- 28:56Speaker 1: was with A Night of the Seven Kingdoms, because I
- 28:59Speaker 1: think that was just such a departure from all of
- 29:01Speaker 1: the other Westros HBO shows. But I'm excited. I'm excited.
- 29:11Speaker 1: I'm excited. Incestus back on my TV.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I do you have any recommendations for recapping like podcasts article? Yes,
- 29:22Speaker 2: I mean I do always watch the like inside the
- 29:24Speaker 2: episode after I have.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Always number one number one resource my Instagram mutual Game
- 29:31Speaker 1: of Thrones historian. I believe I've talked about her on
- 29:35Speaker 1: the show before. She makes a lot of videos, but
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, when the show isn't airing, she makes a
- 29:43Speaker 1: lot of videos about the book series about Lore. She
- 29:46Speaker 1: goes into like crazy details on Lore. She's an incredible
- 29:50Speaker 1: resource and with the season airing, she not only does
- 29:54Speaker 1: very lengthy episode breakdowns like proper recaps, but then she'll
- 30:00Speaker 1: also pick certain things within the episode and go into
- 30:04Speaker 1: much deeper in depth analysis on them. Thank you highly recommend.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And you'll do YouTube or like, how know I.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Watch her on Instagram reels or TikTok, but I believe
- 30:18Speaker 1: she also posts her content on YouTube. Yes she does.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I'm looking at it now.
- 30:23Speaker 1: And then I also do like the Vulture recaps me too.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, fierce Uh if you watch Game of Thrones,
- 30:34Speaker 2: I'm curious, virgins, like how you're feeling about the season
- 30:38Speaker 2: and if you want us to keep talking about it
- 30:40Speaker 2: or if it's like because I feel like in episodes
- 30:43Speaker 2: in seasons past of like a virsion, We've done a
- 30:46Speaker 2: lot of episode recaps and sometimes the show is like
- 30:50Speaker 2: good enough to talk about it that frequently, But curious
- 30:53Speaker 2: to know what the virgins are feeling.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Yeah, give us, give us your take.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Way in do we talk about Olivia Rego next? I
- 31:01Speaker 2: feel like that to me is the other burning thing.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Yes, let's talk about you seem pretty sad for a
- 31:07Speaker 1: girl so in love Olivia Rodrigo's newest album, I she is.
- 31:13Speaker 2: I mean sometimes this is her greatest weakness, but her
- 31:18Speaker 2: songwriting is Christine Like there are like kind of every
- 31:23Speaker 2: album she's put out is like kind of a no
- 31:26Speaker 2: Skips album. Like I have a playlist actually on Spotify
- 31:30Speaker 2: with the first track of every album that I think
- 31:33Speaker 2: is a no Skips album in my personal kind of
- 31:36Speaker 2: favorite library, and I'm pretty sure all of her albums
- 31:39Speaker 2: are in it.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Okay, wait, sidebar, what are some of the albums on
- 31:42Speaker 1: that list?
- 31:43Speaker 2: Oh my god, it's like a it's like a it's
- 31:47Speaker 2: quite a lot.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Give us the highlights, yeah.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Let me give Okay. I'm trying to think of some
- 31:51Speaker 2: that are like kind of like what ones that you
- 31:54Speaker 2: would like either contest or And I'm also going to
- 31:58Speaker 2: try and look at ones that I got.
- 31:59Speaker 1: I might actually be a good deep dive topic.
- 32:02Speaker 2: No albums, Oh my god, there's so many. I mean,
- 32:06Speaker 2: I'll add I'll do some of the recent ones, which
- 32:08Speaker 2: I think are more fun, and I add them kind
- 32:10Speaker 2: of at random. It's not chronological at all. I recently added, uh,
- 32:15Speaker 2: the first track of Monkey Business Pump It.
- 32:18Speaker 1: That is a zero skips album, and.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Let me tell you, there are some fucking stupid Whax
- 32:24Speaker 2: songs on that album and it's still no skips. And
- 32:27Speaker 2: I think that's really hard to do, to make kind
- 32:29Speaker 2: of stupid music and actually that you still actually want
- 32:33Speaker 2: to listen to, even when some some of it feels
- 32:35Speaker 2: like filler. It's like boppable, like that's like the Testament,
- 32:40Speaker 2: the testament of a No Skiss album is not like
- 32:42Speaker 2: every single song is genius or every single song is untouchable.
- 32:46Speaker 2: It's every single song is something you really want to
- 32:50Speaker 2: listen to No Skips. I did put in Lola Young's
- 32:57Speaker 2: I'm Only Fucking myself this album. It is truly. I mean,
- 33:02Speaker 2: I've listened to a few of her other albums. I
- 33:04Speaker 2: think that her most recent album is pretty sublime. I
- 33:08Speaker 2: really love that album.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Hmmm.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I put Pop two in there, agree, which like I
- 33:18Speaker 2: hadn't actually listened to all the way through in a while,
- 33:22Speaker 2: and I revisited and recently plopped it in Fever by
- 33:26Speaker 2: Kylie Minogue, the deluxe edition. I was like, that is, like,
- 33:32Speaker 2: I know, skips banger. I think I was like listening
- 33:35Speaker 2: to it all the way through recently, and I was like,
- 33:37Speaker 2: oh my god, Guts is in here. Of course, as
- 33:40Speaker 2: we were saying Gloria Stefan's Metierra, Oh, oh my god,
- 33:44Speaker 2: I put that in recently. It's so good, and uh, yes,
- 33:49Speaker 2: several Donna Summer album Donna Summer's albums. I'm like, okay, yeah,
- 33:56Speaker 2: some Vampire Weekend and here. Yeah, I'm curious if there's
- 34:00Speaker 2: like a if there's there's a lot of obvious ones
- 34:04Speaker 2: on here that I don't even think are worth like mentioning, like,
- 34:07Speaker 2: you know, Solange's true ep uh control by sis here,
- 34:15Speaker 2: I'm mentioning all of them uh uh uh you know,
- 34:21Speaker 2: Born this Way, et cetera. But sometimes that like honestly,
- 34:26Speaker 2: you know what it is, something that you and I
- 34:28Speaker 2: really wholeheartedly agree with is turn Off the Light.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Parts one into Kim Petris literally her still her best work.
- 34:35Speaker 2: People are talking about her latest album like it's her
- 34:40Speaker 2: defining album, like it's the greatest album of her career.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I could not disagree more. I think that the album
- 34:45Speaker 2: is mostly trash with two good songs on it, and
- 34:49Speaker 2: it's all about the standard her. The standard she set
- 34:52Speaker 2: for herself is turn Off the Light, and until she
- 34:54Speaker 2: does something that is as good as that, we can talk. Okay.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, Okay. So here's the thing. This
- 35:05Speaker 1: is not a No Skips album. To me. It's a
- 35:09Speaker 1: really great album and some of the songs on it
- 35:13Speaker 1: are not only my favorite songs she's ever made, but
- 35:15Speaker 1: some of the best pop songs I've heard in the
- 35:18Speaker 1: past several years. But it's not a No Skips album.
- 35:23Speaker 1: I do think it is a little too ballad heavy.
- 35:27Speaker 1: I want her. I I just like am wondering if
- 35:30Speaker 1: she ever gonna make a happy song?
- 35:33Speaker 2: What? What is there? Tell me this the skips that
- 35:37Speaker 2: that I kind of wanna I haven't given first.
- 35:40Speaker 1: I'll tell you my standouts. You you plus me equals heart.
- 35:45Speaker 1: That is like a perfect pop song. It is incredible.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I have listened to it so many times. Maggots for
- 35:54Speaker 1: Brains the one that she like wrote and it was
- 35:58Speaker 1: kind of inspired by Stephen Miranda Sex and the City
- 36:02Speaker 1: So fun so eighties. The Cure is an incredible song.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I think it's my favorite.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Less Taylor Swift You're nothing. Sorry, Taylor Swift hasn't written
- 36:15Speaker 1: anything as good as Less in a really long time.
- 36:19Speaker 2: All everything Taylor has put out in the last couple
- 36:23Speaker 2: of years is not as good as like Olivia Rodrigo's
- 36:27Speaker 2: like kind of like third tier songs on this album.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Sorry. So I would say the skips for me are
- 36:33Speaker 1: mostly the ballads Honeybee Purple, which a lot of people
- 36:38Speaker 1: really love, and I just it just doesn't it doesn't
- 36:40Speaker 1: do it for me. Wo.
- 36:43Speaker 2: It feels like the end of the album. I thought
- 36:44Speaker 2: when it was playing, I was yeah.
- 36:46Speaker 1: And I was like, just like it should be an album.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Ender and I was like, oh, it's the end of
- 36:50Speaker 2: the album, and then it kept calling on.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I was like, oh no, I think if this was
- 36:54Speaker 1: a Lord album, Purple would have been the last song. Yeah,
- 36:58Speaker 1: the actual last song cigarette smoke, I don't really care for.
- 37:02Speaker 2: I love the Robert Smith song.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I love the Robert Smith song as wells.
- 37:06Speaker 2: I love that there is so much. I love that
- 37:10Speaker 2: there is just like so much that she references from.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Obviously the Cure. I also feel like I hear sometimes
- 37:19Speaker 2: like Talking Heads or like totally the Smiths.
- 37:25Speaker 1: It's very post punk new wave eighties, and I love
- 37:31Speaker 1: that that is my absolute favorite genre of music. And
- 37:37Speaker 1: there are moments on especially Maggots from Brains and You
- 37:41Speaker 1: Plus Me Equals Heart, that literally sound like they could
- 37:45Speaker 1: be off a Cure album. The only my issue with
- 37:49Speaker 1: this album, besides some of the slower moments and it
- 37:52Speaker 1: being a little too sad, which I get is the
- 37:55Speaker 1: point of the album. It's literally literally in the title,
- 37:58Speaker 1: is just that it all sounds a little too perfect.
- 38:03Speaker 1: It's so polished, and I want her to be a
- 38:12Speaker 1: little grittier. I want that in the production. I want
- 38:16Speaker 1: the songs to have a little more texture to them.
- 38:19Speaker 1: They feel too perfect and shiny, like that is the
- 38:23Speaker 1: difference between you know, listening to these songs that are
- 38:28Speaker 1: like referencing this kind of eighties production style and then
- 38:31Speaker 1: actual new way from the eighties is like you can
- 38:34Speaker 1: hear the imperfection on those tracks and like they have
- 38:37Speaker 1: the ability to make things not sound perfect. They have
- 38:39Speaker 1: the ability to like filter things and make them sound
- 38:42Speaker 1: a little older. And I think this album really could
- 38:44Speaker 1: have used that because it's just too sanded down for me,
- 38:49Speaker 1: and I want it roughed up a little. I want
- 38:52Speaker 1: her to maybe like in her last album, she was
- 38:58Speaker 1: really going for this like Courtney Love, Bikini Kill, like
- 39:02Speaker 1: riot Girl thing but again like kind of without clean
- 39:06Speaker 1: but again yeah too clean, too gritty, like not gretty enough,
- 39:10Speaker 1: rather not gritty, not gritty enough. It's like the the
- 39:14Speaker 1: energy is there and it's in the lyrics, but it
- 39:18Speaker 1: doesn't sound like what she's necessarily like the energy she's presenting,
- 39:23Speaker 1: it's still it's all still a little too like musical theory.
- 39:27Speaker 2: This is kind of it's a little too musical theory.
- 39:29Speaker 2: It's a little too like kind of uh a Gaga
- 39:34Speaker 2: affliction level annunciation, what to to Do to Die Today? Yes,
- 39:39Speaker 2: it's it is also sometimes and this is kind of
- 39:42Speaker 2: like sounds like a nag on the quality of the artistry,
- 39:45Speaker 2: and it's actually it's not, because I think she's an
- 39:47Speaker 2: amazing songwriter, but sometimes it's like kids Bop Courtney Love,
- 39:51Speaker 2: you know what, Totally it's it's Courtney Love for thirteen
- 39:56Speaker 2: year olds and and I and I am saying that
- 40:00Speaker 2: as someone who loves music for thirteen year olds, I
- 40:03Speaker 2: literally love it.
- 40:04Speaker 1: But that's also I mean, I think that has been
- 40:06Speaker 1: a conversation around this album rollout. You know, there was
- 40:10Speaker 1: the big moment of everyone getting mad at Olivia Rodrigo
- 40:12Speaker 1: because she wore this like little girl dress at a performance.
- 40:17Speaker 1: And I think that that is part of the problem,
- 40:20Speaker 1: is like she is I don't want to say co opting.
- 40:24Speaker 1: She's using the aesthetics of riot girl and punk and
- 40:29Speaker 1: new wave, but they do feel a little empty because
- 40:34Speaker 1: they're that like anger is missing, the political bent is missing,
- 40:40Speaker 1: even though I know Olivia Rodrigo like is politically engaged.
- 40:43Speaker 1: She just announced her music festival in which all the
- 40:46Speaker 1: proceeds are are going to fund like women led causes
- 40:51Speaker 1: and like, that's all great, but it's all just like
- 40:54Speaker 1: a little sanitized, and you know she's doing it's like
- 40:59Speaker 1: she doing like a Disney Riot Girl. You know, Yeah,
- 41:05Speaker 1: Disney Channel put Disney Channel post punk, and I want
- 41:08Speaker 1: it to be a little more real.
- 41:09Speaker 2: And here's the thing, we as a society, we've experienced
- 41:14Speaker 2: Disney Channel post punk and liked it.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Okay, the Ashley Tisdall cover of Kiss the Girl. I
- 41:20Speaker 1: still listen to it weekly, babes.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Old Lindsay Lohan's ultimate from Freaky Friday, Okay, long lived,
- 41:26Speaker 2: Pink Slip okay, baby Like, I like Disney Channel Riot Girl.
- 41:31Speaker 2: But I think to your point, as she's when she did,
- 41:35Speaker 2: she's in my opinion, I don't think she's changed that
- 41:37Speaker 2: much as an artist across her three albums, And no,
- 41:39Speaker 2: I don't think she's done pretty much the same thing
- 41:43Speaker 2: with new added layers of taste level, but not that
- 41:47Speaker 2: much to say for how her artistry might continue to grow.
- 41:51Speaker 2: And when I think about her as an artist when
- 41:54Speaker 2: she emerged on the scene, what she did did feel
- 41:57Speaker 2: completely I'm not gonna say new, like particularly novel, but
- 42:02Speaker 2: really expertly and perfectly crafted and manicured and done so
- 42:07Speaker 2: in a way that made me miss pop punk. And
- 42:11Speaker 2: even though a lot of it is not as good
- 42:13Speaker 2: as fucking Willow, the Willow Coping Mechanism album, which I
- 42:18Speaker 2: think has that fucking grit and the that's what I want,
- 42:22Speaker 2: I would want from her, such a good call out.
- 42:25Speaker 2: I would love, love, love for her to like even
- 42:30Speaker 2: though she plays with a little bit of vocal distortion
- 42:32Speaker 2: in this album, like fucking distort your voice, we don't
- 42:36Speaker 2: like I want to hear her scream, Like I didn't
- 42:39Speaker 2: come to listen to Rachel Zegler on the track. I
- 42:42Speaker 2: came to listen to like somebody who has had a
- 42:47Speaker 2: lot of sex and somebody who has maybe gotten in
- 42:51Speaker 2: a car crash, somebody who makes really huge mistakes outside
- 42:56Speaker 2: of the romantic life. All of her mistake, all the
- 42:59Speaker 2: all the ways that she tries to telling herself, all
- 43:01Speaker 2: the way she tries to be like the messy girl,
- 43:04Speaker 2: it's all just about love and still her kids bop.
- 43:07Speaker 1: That is that is the problem. It's like I don't
- 43:09Speaker 1: think she's lived enough life. It's like she's just talking
- 43:12Speaker 1: about her boyfriends.
- 43:13Speaker 2: I'm like, tell me you want to kill yourself, Like,
- 43:16Speaker 2: tell me you want to kill someone else, like I mean.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Get angry, Yes, I mean get angry and not just
- 43:22Speaker 1: at a man, like get angry at society, get angry
- 43:25Speaker 1: at yourself, get angry at your parents. I don't know.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I also, I mean I know that I feel
- 43:32Speaker 2: like this, you know, is something that music artists don't
- 43:34Speaker 2: ever want to do because it cheapens the work. But like,
- 43:38Speaker 2: I think it's so fucking sickening that, like Robert Smith
- 43:41Speaker 2: is on this album, and I'm kind of like, what
- 43:43Speaker 2: would it look like for you to do like something
- 43:46Speaker 2: with David Byrne, or to like sample New Order, you
- 43:51Speaker 2: know what I mean, Or to like bring in fucking
- 43:54Speaker 2: Blondie you know what's wait, who's the leading.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Debbie Harry Well, Dewie Harry did introduce Olivia when she
- 44:01Speaker 1: performed on it.
- 44:02Speaker 2: She should be on such track, yeah baby, But yeah,
- 44:06Speaker 2: I mean I or.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Like she should be working with producers who worked with
- 44:11Speaker 1: those people, because I because I do think so much
- 44:14Speaker 1: of this comes down to production.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, and but it's yeah or yeah, it's
- 44:21Speaker 2: production and whatever she's she just needs she needs to
- 44:24Speaker 2: remove whatever filtration system she has on this.
- 44:26Speaker 1: She needs to she needs to be messy. She needs
- 44:30Speaker 1: to have a crazy summer, do a bunch of drugs,
- 44:34Speaker 1: get in a car accident. Yes, live some life, because
- 44:38Speaker 1: when you are drugs or like, I want to hear
- 44:40Speaker 1: her making music about like what it's like to be
- 44:43Speaker 1: a child star, and like how that's fucked up. I
- 44:47Speaker 1: just think, like her songs are so confessional, but it's
- 44:50Speaker 1: like she's only pulling from one well and I really
- 44:54Speaker 1: want the well to deepen. And I understand that she
- 44:57Speaker 1: is young, but that is kind of the problem. It's
- 45:00Speaker 1: like it's like how I'm always thinking, like why is
- 45:03Speaker 1: this like twenty five year old writing a memoir. It's like,
- 45:06Speaker 1: why is this twenty three year old writing three deeply
- 45:09Speaker 1: personal confessional albums when like they have not lived enough
- 45:12Speaker 1: life to you know, properly have like pain to work
- 45:17Speaker 1: through through art.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and it yeah, And I just I'm like it,
- 45:23Speaker 2: and I well, I also do think there's a possibility
- 45:26Speaker 2: that and this is all theory that maybe she's being
- 45:29Speaker 2: over edited. And I'm just kind of like Diva, remove
- 45:32Speaker 2: the Brita filter, Like I want the bacteria, I want
- 45:36Speaker 2: the pulp, I want this.
- 45:38Speaker 1: I want the New York City tap water.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Yes, I want the cultures.
- 45:42Speaker 1: I want the floride milk.
- 45:43Speaker 2: I want the raw milk with the culture on top. Okay,
- 45:47Speaker 2: like give me kurds okay, and way give me floaties okay.
- 45:54Speaker 2: I want her to.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Spit in it. I want we want unpasteurized from the utter.
- 45:59Speaker 2: It's an that and what we're getting is spit through
- 46:02Speaker 2: Brita filter and I'm like, Diva, make it dirty. Sorry,
- 46:07Speaker 2: you're twenty three nine.
- 46:08Speaker 1: When we're getting is milk. I want milk.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, those are some wishes for Olivia Rodrigo. We uh,
- 46:18Speaker 2: I don't know what time you have left for us.
- 46:20Speaker 2: I'm curious if there's like maybe a thing you wanna
- 46:23Speaker 2: You wrote the itinerary for today.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I did. I did before we before we log off.
- 46:29Speaker 1: I wanted to talk a little bit about Interview with
- 46:31Speaker 1: the Vampire, just like some top line thoughts, because I
- 46:36Speaker 1: know you're not watching it, Fran, but people in the
- 46:38Speaker 1: comments have been asking us to talk about a little
- 46:40Speaker 1: bit more.
- 46:41Speaker 2: By people, do you mean like one commenter or like
- 46:43Speaker 2: multiple multiple? Okay?
- 46:45Speaker 1: I think. And then I also have some recent reads
- 46:50Speaker 1: with recommendations, so Interview with the Vampire. I have now
- 46:54Speaker 1: seen six of the seven episodes of the season. Three
- 46:58Speaker 1: of them are currently out, but I've been very interested
- 47:02Speaker 1: to see the reaction so far to this season. It
- 47:05Speaker 1: is much more mixed than the past two seasons have been,
- 47:08Speaker 1: and I do understand. I actually do have some problems
- 47:13Speaker 1: with the season so far, specifically with the way that
- 47:18Speaker 1: the story is being told. I think, as I mentioned
- 47:21Speaker 1: the last time we talked about it, like this season
- 47:24Speaker 1: is really a different show, not just in the title,
- 47:28Speaker 1: but in terms of the editing style and the way
- 47:30Speaker 1: the story is told and all of this stuff. One
- 47:32Speaker 1: of the problems I have is the first two seasons
- 47:38Speaker 1: of the show, you know, we're being this like prestige
- 47:43Speaker 1: period drama, and so much of them were these really
- 47:46Speaker 1: elaborate flashbacks that as Louie was recounting his life. This
- 47:53Speaker 1: season is more like a music documentary and soles stats
- 47:59Speaker 1: and as a character is much more you know, chaotic
- 48:02Speaker 1: and frenetic, so we're not getting the same kind of flashbacks,
- 48:06Speaker 1: and I have found that kind of hard, especially as
- 48:10Speaker 1: someone who really loves the book The Vampire List At
- 48:15Speaker 1: There's so many things that we're just seeing montages of
- 48:19Speaker 1: rather than actual proper scenes. Like I really wanted to
- 48:22Speaker 1: see Listat getting turned. I really wanted to see see
- 48:25Speaker 1: list At turning his mother Gabriella. I really want to
- 48:28Speaker 1: see more of Lestat and Nikki's relationship, like all of
- 48:31Speaker 1: these things that we're just getting brief glimpses of, and
- 48:35Speaker 1: that has been kind of disappointing. But you know, I
- 48:41Speaker 1: won't I won't talk about the episodes that I've seen
- 48:44Speaker 1: already and whether or not the show changes, but like
- 48:47Speaker 1: up until the point we're at, that's kind of my
- 48:49Speaker 1: sticking thing. The music is great, though, I especially love
- 48:53Speaker 1: the song Your Biggest Fan and the way it was
- 48:54Speaker 1: used in the most recent episode is this kind of
- 48:57Speaker 1: music video about Lestat's make who you know, kidnapped and
- 49:01Speaker 1: sexually assaulted him and turned him into a vampire against
- 49:04Speaker 1: his will. And then the other sticky thing is the
- 49:09Speaker 1: Gabriella of it all. Gabriella played by Jennifer Ale, Lestat's
- 49:13Speaker 1: mother who he turned into a vampire, who in the
- 49:18Speaker 1: first episode, the first episode ends with them making out
- 49:23Speaker 1: and then in the second episode they have like just fucked.
- 49:27Speaker 1: And the sort of theme of or this sort of
- 49:30Speaker 1: thing about like vampire incest is very much like haunting
- 49:34Speaker 1: the story and Lestat keeps making these references to like,
- 49:36Speaker 1: don't worry, I'll get to the vampire incest. It's weird
- 49:42Speaker 1: because in the books there is an undercurrent of something
- 49:49Speaker 1: wrong and unhealthy in Lestat in his mother's relationship, but
- 49:53Speaker 1: that has been exacerbated in the show and made the subtext.
- 49:57Speaker 2: Has It's not text incess, it's not that's a creative
- 50:03Speaker 2: they do.
- 50:03Speaker 1: They do kiss, but but also it's different. But it's
- 50:08Speaker 1: different though because vampires in Anne Rice's novels don't fuck,
- 50:14Speaker 1: So I get it as an adaptational change, Like because
- 50:17Speaker 1: the vampires in the show fuck, yes, it makes sense
- 50:21Speaker 1: that they are having that they're fucking in the show,
- 50:25Speaker 1: So in.
- 50:25Speaker 2: Some ways it could like maybe is textual.
- 50:28Speaker 1: It is textual, It makes sense. What I'm kind of
- 50:31Speaker 1: a little bit more upset about is that the character
- 50:34Speaker 1: Gabrielle in the in the novels, she's called Gabrielle, she's
- 50:37Speaker 1: Gabriella in the show because she she's Italian, and Jennifer
- 50:42Speaker 1: al is doing this crazy Italian accent. It is fucking insane.
- 50:47Speaker 1: She sounds like it's a mem Mario. But in the
- 50:51Speaker 1: novels Gabrielle is like so trans and like one of
- 50:58Speaker 1: the first things she does as a vampire is cut
- 51:01Speaker 1: off all her hair, and then she is distraught when
- 51:05Speaker 1: the next day she wakes up and it has all
- 51:07Speaker 1: grown back. It's one of sort of these like defining
- 51:10Speaker 1: things about her character, about how she's this like genderless
- 51:15Speaker 1: lioness and she you know, tells the stat like I'm
- 51:18Speaker 1: not your mother anymore. I'm not even a woman anymore.
- 51:21Speaker 1: In the show, she's very gendered. I mean, she's gendering herself.
- 51:26Speaker 1: I think it's part of her you know, vampire armor
- 51:29Speaker 1: and the way that she lures people in. But it
- 51:32Speaker 1: just was something I was kind of disappointed to see
- 51:35Speaker 1: removed from the character in the way we've seen her
- 51:39Speaker 1: presented so far. So I mean, stay tuned. That could
- 51:44Speaker 1: change and maybe it was just something that they didn't
- 51:49Speaker 1: know how to deal with. I don't know, but I
- 51:53Speaker 1: just kind of like justice for book. Gabrielle. She's so
- 51:57Speaker 1: fucking cool.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Speaking of I'm just googling photos of Gabrielle.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Yeah, speaking of books, I did want to just like
- 52:07Speaker 1: quickly go through a couple things I've read recently make
- 52:10Speaker 1: some RECs. I shockingly have only read one Stephen King book.
- 52:16Speaker 1: So far this month. The Dark Tower Drawing Up the Three,
- 52:19Speaker 1: the next book in the Dark Tower series, my favorite
- 52:21Speaker 1: of those books so far. I really loved it. Also,
- 52:26Speaker 1: Mister Magic by Kirsten White was a good read. It's
- 52:29Speaker 1: about this children's TV show that like everyone remembers from
- 52:35Speaker 1: their childhood, but like there's no actual recordings of it,
- 52:40Speaker 1: and it's this sort of like almost like creepy pasta
- 52:43Speaker 1: urban legend, and this girl who has no memory of
- 52:47Speaker 1: her childhood finds out that she was on the show
- 52:49Speaker 1: and sort of gets drawn back into it. Really good
- 52:53Speaker 1: plane read Hard Luck Jenny by David Sodergren. Really quick
- 52:58Speaker 1: horror novella Petty by Sol me Back. Also a really
- 53:02Speaker 1: quick corn novella that I read in one sitting Last
- 53:05Speaker 1: Days by Brian Evanson. Similarly, I've been reading a lot
- 53:08Speaker 1: of short books this month just to sort of pick
- 53:10Speaker 1: myself out of a reading slump, and then this weekend
- 53:14Speaker 1: I read So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison, the only book
- 53:16Speaker 1: of hers I hadn't read yet, which is a fun
- 53:20Speaker 1: vampire novel that's also kind of like Thelma and Louisy.
- 53:23Speaker 2: We will be dropping all of these book titles in
- 53:27Speaker 2: the episode description. And we also post occasionally post episode
- 53:33Speaker 2: recaps on our substack. We cross posts on our substacks,
- 53:37Speaker 2: so if you are looking to get into the reading
- 53:40Speaker 2: list that Rose has, it'll all be there.
- 53:44Speaker 1: And I think that's us. I think that's it for
- 53:46Speaker 1: us today. We will be back next week, potentially with
- 53:51Speaker 1: an episode from Fire Island. Yeah, yeah, we will. And
- 53:56Speaker 1: don't forget we have ad free episodes on patreon dot
- 54:01Speaker 1: com slash like a Virgin. We also have monthly bonus episodes,
- 54:06Speaker 1: so make sure that you become a patron and support
- 54:10Speaker 1: the dolls. Happy Pride, Hope you voted. Call your grandma.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Love you, Love you,
