  Speaker 1: to twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty and thirty one a

  Speaker 1: new deal adds two additional years, plus incentives and bumps

  Speaker 1: to win a national championship, and especially if it's a

  Speaker 1: rival school, I had more people happy for Skip Johnson

  Speaker 1: and how this worked out for Skip and winning his
• 10:18
  Speaker 1: first national championship at the College World Series as a
• 10:22
  Speaker 1: head coach. So, in case you didn't hear I was saying,

  Speaker 1: I had more long worn fans tell me how happy
• 10:27
  Speaker 1: they were about Skip Johnson winning the national championship. So
• 10:30
  Speaker 1: it was almost like a lot of Texas fans could
• 10:33
  Speaker 1: live with that thing because of Skip and what a
• 10:36
  Speaker 1: good man he is. And I know it had me
• 10:38
  Speaker 1: a happy time for you, for the program, for the community,
• 10:42
  Speaker 1: and certainly for the Johnson family.

  Speaker 2: Yeah, I was happy for a lot of people, and
• 10:48
  Speaker 2: Skip Johnson is at the.
• 10:50
  Speaker 5: Top of that list for sure, just as Texas fans
• 10:54
  Speaker 5: are well aware. Assault of the Earth, as genuine as
• 10:58
  Speaker 5: they come. And what a riot, I mean, completely out
• 11:03
  Speaker 5: of the blue OKBALLMA was not playing good baseball going
• 11:07
  Speaker 5: into the NCAA tournament.
• 11:09
  Speaker 2: They weren't any they weren't they were sloppy defensive.
• 11:13
  Speaker 5: There was absolutely no reason to believe that they would
• 11:17
  Speaker 5: even make it out of the Atlanta Regional. And for

  Speaker 5: them to win the National Championship is I think it's
• 11:24
  Speaker 5: the most improbable run that any ou team in any
• 11:28
  Speaker 5: sport has ever had to a title, and they they get.

  Speaker 5: They went the hard way. You know, they beat the
• 11:36
  Speaker 5: greatest Georgia Tech team of all time, they beat the
• 11:40
  Speaker 5: best Kansas team that they've ever had, arguably the best
• 11:44
  Speaker 5: Georgia team of all time, and arguably the best North
• 11:46
  Speaker 5: Carolina team they've ever had. And to win it so
• 11:50
  Speaker 5: an incredible accomplishment.
• 11:52
  Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
• 11:53
  Speaker 1: And like I said, a lot of longer events were
• 11:55
  Speaker 1: happy for Skip, myself included about that. And I texted
• 11:58
  Speaker 1: him that night after to the national title and he
• 12:01
  Speaker 1: text to be right back and was really really good.

  Speaker 1: So I transition from that into the announcement today for
• 12:08
  Speaker 1: the contract extension or the new six year deal for
• 12:12
  Speaker 1: Brent Venables. Now, you know, I thought that he's he's
• 12:15
  Speaker 1: gonna fine job there and obviously coach the Sooners into
• 12:17
  Speaker 1: the playoffs.
• 12:18
  Speaker 2: But fans being fans, and it's like this in this town.
• 12:21
  Speaker 1: It's like this in Athens, Georgia, and Tuscaloose, Alabama, Baton Rouge,
• 12:25
  Speaker 1: and then obviously in Norman there's always going to be
• 12:28
  Speaker 1: those who wonder, who question, who doubt, all that sort
• 12:32
  Speaker 1: of stuff. I would imagine, at least for a good
• 12:35
  Speaker 1: chunk of them, this new deal for Brent Venables kind
• 12:38
  Speaker 1: of puts a little bit of that to rest for
• 12:40
  Speaker 1: a time. Wouldn't you think, Oh, it's college sports, you know.

  Speaker 1: I mean, if they go out and go seven and
• 12:49
  Speaker 1: five this year, or you know, worse, then they'll be
• 12:55
  Speaker 1: calling for his head. So it certainly increases the buyout
• 12:59
  Speaker 1: you would think if something bad comes along.

  Speaker 2: But I think there will be.

  Speaker 5: Some skepticism about that for sure, about this extension among
• 13:09
  Speaker 5: a fraction of the fan base, because you know, two
• 13:14
  Speaker 5: years ago they did not that bad year, and last

  Speaker 5: year they went to the playoff, but they lost their
• 13:21
  Speaker 5: first game, and the expectations around here are national championships
• 13:25
  Speaker 5: and so There will be a fraction of the fan
• 13:27
  Speaker 5: base that looks at this sideways, but I would say
• 13:31
  Speaker 5: the overwhelming majority is very happy with the job that
• 13:35
  Speaker 5: he's done. They love Brent from the first time around
• 13:38
  Speaker 5: when he was a defensive coordinator. They love the culture
• 13:42
  Speaker 5: that he has built at OU, and the defense has
• 13:47
  Speaker 5: been undeniably fantastic since he took over, and it's gotten
• 13:51
  Speaker 5: better every year. They have searched for answers to make
• 13:55
  Speaker 5: the offense better, and we'll see whether or not they've
• 13:58
  Speaker 5: accomplished that this year. There's reason to believe they're going
• 14:01
  Speaker 5: to be better on that side of the ball. But
• 14:03
  Speaker 5: the direction the program has gone in the last couple
• 14:06
  Speaker 5: of years, and especially what he has turned them into defensively,
• 14:10
  Speaker 5: has everyone pretty excited. So I would say that the
• 14:14
  Speaker 5: vast majority of the OU fan base will receive this
• 14:18
  Speaker 5: news today.

  Speaker 1: Well, yeah, you brought up something, and like I said,
• 14:23
  Speaker 1: both of us have seen this with our own eyes,
• 14:28
  Speaker 1: and you pointed out the expectation is for national championships
• 14:30
  Speaker 1: at Oklahoma. This is the same thing at Texas. The
• 14:33
  Speaker 1: expectations for national championships. Now you've seen it like I've
• 14:36
  Speaker 1: seen it on social media. There are people in places
• 14:38
  Speaker 1: like Athens, George and Tuscaloosa or wherever, and said, why
• 14:42
  Speaker 1: do you guys expect so much? You know, Oklahoma had
• 14:44
  Speaker 1: one one since two thousand, Texas had and one one
• 14:46
  Speaker 1: since two thousand and five. What is this quote unquote expectation.
• 14:51
  Speaker 1: My response has always been the expectation is to be
• 14:54
  Speaker 1: in the hunt and to play for it every year.
• 14:58
  Speaker 1: And that's the expectation in the building where they have that,
• 15:03
  Speaker 1: and so fans of the of the teams, fans of Oklahoma,
• 15:06
  Speaker 1: fans of Texas do come to expect that. And yes,
• 15:12
  Speaker 1: maybe neither one of them has won one in more
• 15:15
  Speaker 1: than two decades, and LSU's won the one in twenty
• 15:19
  Speaker 1: nineteen to one before that going all the way back
• 15:21
  Speaker 1: to four, but there hasn't been It's not like there's
• 15:25
  Speaker 1: been an awful lot of national championships among all of
• 15:29
  Speaker 1: the sec other than Alabama in Georgia. So expectation is
• 15:34
  Speaker 1: a standard that comes out every year, don't you think,
• 15:37
  Speaker 1: no matter how long the drought might be, this.
• 15:44
  Speaker 5: Is one of those places where it's never going to
• 15:48
  Speaker 5: change and they don't care what conference you're in, and
• 15:53
  Speaker 5: I don't I'm not even disagreeing with that. You know,
• 15:56
  Speaker 5: I think that if you are of Blue Blaeod status

  Speaker 5: and in football Oklahoma is, then that should be the
• 16:05
  Speaker 5: goal every year. There has to be a realization that
• 16:08
  Speaker 5: goes along with it that this is a tougher conference.

  Speaker 5: But at the same time, you know, it's not like
• 16:13
  Speaker 5: the old days where you had to be in the
• 16:14
  Speaker 5: top two to have a chance anymore. You know, you could,
• 16:17
  Speaker 5: you just got to make the playoff. And so I
• 16:21
  Speaker 5: don't think whoever the head coach is, whatever conference they play,
• 16:24
  Speaker 5: and it's never going to change around here, nor should it.
• 16:28
  Speaker 2: They want to win a title.
• 16:30
  Speaker 5: And it's been now twenty six years since they won
• 16:34
  Speaker 5: their last one, and for a lot of Sooner fans,
• 16:36
  Speaker 5: and they've had great teams and great players in the
• 16:39
  Speaker 5: last twenty six years, but they don't have that championship,
• 16:43
  Speaker 5: and so there's there is certainly a bubbling hunger.

  Speaker 2: No doubt about it.

  Speaker 1: the other guys starting at quarterback, and I would submit

  Speaker 1: that other than John Mattier at Oklahoma, Arch Manning at Texas,

  Speaker 1: Gunner Stockton at Georgia Trinidad, Shambliss. I guess at Ole

  Speaker 1: Miss those four you get below that, maybe Marcel Ree
• 17:14
  Speaker 1: could be put in there as well. But there's question marks.
• 17:17
  Speaker 1: Just about all of the other play by play guys
• 17:19
  Speaker 1: have mentioned that to me, they kind of have a
• 17:21
  Speaker 1: question mark at their quarterback spot. Clearly that question mark
• 17:24
  Speaker 1: does not exist for Oklahoma, and I would imagine it's
• 17:26
  Speaker 1: a pretty anxious materier to take the rains again being healthy,
• 17:31
  Speaker 1: to try to take it up another notch this season.
• 17:34
  Speaker 5: Yeah, you mentioned healthy, and that's the key word. He
• 17:38
  Speaker 5: played two thirds of last season with a broken thumb
• 17:42
  Speaker 5: on his throwing hand, and it was, you know, you
• 17:46
  Speaker 5: could tell. And the first game he came back, obviously,
• 17:49
  Speaker 5: was the Texas game, and anything beyond fifteen yards fluttered
• 17:53
  Speaker 5: on him, and even beyond that later in the year,
• 17:57
  Speaker 5: he just didn't have the zip on any downfield passing.

  Speaker 5: And what it did is defenses compacted on him. They
• 18:06
  Speaker 5: knew that the deep threat wasn't there, and so they
• 18:10
  Speaker 5: were able to play all eleven guys closer to the
• 18:13
  Speaker 5: line of scrimmage and it made moving the football very difficult.
• 18:18
  Speaker 5: He's healthy, that thumb is healthy, the zip is back.
• 18:22
  Speaker 5: You know, the first four games last year before he
