- 0:00Speaker 1: I think we're good now.
- 0:01Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:01Speaker 1: A little false start there. My bad.
- 0:04Speaker 3: Alex, we're playing. You're a little limited today. You're a
- 0:08Speaker 3: little limited. That's what I'm going to call it on
- 0:11Speaker 3: the injury injury report with an illness. But you're going
- 0:14Speaker 3: to power through the show. But you like a good coworker.
- 0:18Speaker 3: You did not come into work to get us all sick.
- 0:21Speaker 3: So I appreciate that. But how are you doing? Are
- 0:23Speaker 3: you are you feeling all right? Are you doing OK?
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'm I'm doing all right. I woke up a little
- 0:27Speaker 2: under the weather.
- 0:28Speaker 4: If you're familiar with Ray Liotta's character from the show,
- 0:31Speaker 4: The League, I just I don't want to get other
- 0:33Speaker 4: people sick.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I don't like being sick.
- 0:35Speaker 4: So I'd be a little bit of a hypocrite, but
- 0:37Speaker 4: the only thing I hate more than being sick is
- 0:39Speaker 4: not being able to talk about football. So obviously we're
- 0:41Speaker 4: going to figure out a way to do the show.
- 0:43Speaker 2: And I apologize.
- 0:44Speaker 4: My voice is a little in and out here, but
- 0:47Speaker 4: we got a great game to talk about and I
- 0:49Speaker 4: wasn't going to miss this one.
- 0:50Speaker 5: Okay.
- 0:50Speaker 3: And, and you're, you also, the only other thing you
- 0:53Speaker 3: hate to talk about more than Josh Allen winning that
- 0:56Speaker 3: game last night is the fact that you're sick.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I know, I know that. I know that. That's probably,
- 1:02Speaker 1: I saw.
- 1:02Speaker 4: That kick up blocked and suddenly like, you know, sweaty
- 1:06Speaker 4: fever shakes, all that. Just when, when Mivas had that
- 1:09Speaker 4: kick blocked, unbelievable. So that's all for him to finally
- 1:12Speaker 4: win an overtime.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I think that that's what it was. I think you
- 1:14Speaker 1: didn't want to show your face.
- 1:15Speaker 4: That I was so sick at the Rams choking that
- 1:18Speaker 4: that might be a very well might be it.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I think that might be it as well. I mean,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I just couldn't believe it.
- 1:23Speaker 3: And I know this isn't Rams catch 22, but I
- 1:27Speaker 3: just can't believe that such a great, operation and a
- 1:30Speaker 3: great team like the Rams cannot figure.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Out special teams.
- 1:35Speaker 3: They haven't been able to figure out special teams for
- 1:37Speaker 3: like three years now. I don't know what it is.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I don't know if they don't practice it enough. I
- 1:41Speaker 3: don't know if they don't emphasize it enough and bring
- 1:44Speaker 3: in players that can help that unit and improve that unit.
- 1:47Speaker 1: They've changed coordinators. They've changed kickers.
- 1:51Speaker 3: It just doesn't seem to matter because I was a little,
- 1:53Speaker 3: you know, it's week five. I'm not saying that you
- 1:56Speaker 3: throw any parades about being in first place in week five,
- 1:58Speaker 3: but I think we were all ready to fire off
- 2:00Speaker 3: tweets last night that the Patriots were going to be
- 2:03Speaker 3: in first place in the AFC East because it looked
- 2:06Speaker 3: like the Rams were going to kick a field goal
- 2:08Speaker 3: and win that game in overtime, and that's why you
- 2:11Speaker 3: finish out the games, right?
- 2:12Speaker 4: I always say, don't let anybody tell you that Special
- 2:17Speaker 4: teams don't matter. And the great John Boyce has a
- 2:19Speaker 4: great piece on the 2010 Chargers, the only team in
- 2:23Speaker 4: league history to finish first in.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Offense and first in defense.
- 2:26Speaker 4: And they missed the playoffs because their special teams were
- 2:29Speaker 4: so bad. So I don't know if the Rams are
- 2:31Speaker 4: quite there, but look, one team I think is, and
- 2:35Speaker 4: there's a number of teams that started slow and are
- 2:36Speaker 4: turning it around.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And you can kind of see the strength of the program.
- 2:40Speaker 4: And, you know, we're going to talk about another team
- 2:42Speaker 4: that also had a rough start relative to expectations, but
- 2:45Speaker 4: maybe he's now starting to turn the corner.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Good segue.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Good professional radio segue right there because the Patriots did
- 2:53Speaker 3: start slow.
- 2:54Speaker 1: They were one and two to start the season.
- 2:56Speaker 3: We all know that the loss down in Jacksonville was
- 3:00Speaker 3: eye opening. I think Mike Rabel said he was highly
- 3:06Speaker 3: concerned at the time about this football team and What
- 3:09Speaker 3: a difference a couple of weeks makes because now they're
- 3:11Speaker 3: on this little two game winning streak. They got the
- 3:13Speaker 3: Jets on Sunday, so that should be three straight wins.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Drake May looks like he's playing like an MVP candidate again.
- 3:20Speaker 3: And I will just say this after that Jaguars game, Alex,
- 3:24Speaker 3: we had a great debate on this show. about Josh
- 3:27Speaker 3: McDaniels and the Patriots offense and all that kind of stuff.
- 3:31Speaker 3: And I, I am here to apologize to Josh McDaniels.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I I'm sorry. I doubted you.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I'm sorry. I, I did not see the method to
- 3:38Speaker 3: the madness. And I, I know I'm sounding like I'm
- 3:41Speaker 3: being facetious, but I'm really not. I'm being dead serious
- 3:44Speaker 3: about this. I wrote about it on Patriots.com and my
- 3:47Speaker 3: film review. I now can see this slow buildup to
- 3:53Speaker 3: adding a little bit more spice or seasoning to the
- 3:56Speaker 3: offense each week and adding a little bit more flavor
- 4:00Speaker 3: to their base concepts every single week. And we can
- 4:02Speaker 3: go over some of the specifics, but it's clear to
- 4:05Speaker 3: me now that Josh McDaniels is being truthful when he
- 4:09Speaker 3: said at the podium multiple times, It's an extension of
- 4:12Speaker 3: the preseason. We're building fundamentals. We're building a foundation so
- 4:17Speaker 3: that we can start doing all the fancy stuff down
- 4:20Speaker 3: the line and build it off of a good, strong foundation.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So I think that there's the only nitpick I would
- 4:27Speaker 3: have of that. is did you, do you have to.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Start one and two every year before you turn it on?
- 4:34Speaker 6: Right.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Like, you know, can you start a little bit faster?
- 4:37Speaker 3: Cause you know, not necessarily the loss to Seattle in
- 4:40Speaker 3: the opener, Alex, but like that Jacksonville game, if there's
- 4:43Speaker 3: a tiebreaker situation in terms of seating or whatever, uh,
- 4:47Speaker 3: Like that could come back to bite you that you
- 4:49Speaker 3: lost to Jacksonville early in the year. If I'm not mistaken,
- 4:52Speaker 3: the Raiders lost early in the year last year, came
- 4:55Speaker 3: back to bite them.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that was, that was, it was a common opponent tiebreaker.
- 4:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:59Speaker 3: That's why they didn't have the number one over overall
- 5:01Speaker 3: seat in the conference in Denver did. Uh, so I,
- 5:05Speaker 3: I think that that that's a factor, but, uh, we
- 5:09Speaker 3: now have seen the offense break out over the last
- 5:11Speaker 3: two weeks. I am, uh, all sorts of jazzed up
- 5:15Speaker 3: about the type of offense that they're running in the
- 5:17Speaker 3: schemes that they're running. And really more so, I would
- 5:20Speaker 3: say the way they're building. off of the core concepts
- 5:23Speaker 3: that we've seen going back to training camp. And they're
- 5:26Speaker 3: adding little bells and whistles to all those concepts to
- 5:29Speaker 3: spice them up. It's been a really incredible turnaround for
- 5:33Speaker 3: the offense with, with what I thought it last week
- 5:36Speaker 3: in Buffalo, maybe for Drake may like kind of like
- 5:39Speaker 3: a getting the monkey off his back confidence booster. And
- 5:42Speaker 3: then this week against the Raiders, I mean, basically pitched
- 5:45Speaker 3: a perfect game from start to finish.
- 5:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 5:48Speaker 4: So just first off on McDaniels, I'll, I'll say what
- 5:50Speaker 4: I said. at the time we talked about Jacksonville, like
- 5:54Speaker 4: the guy's been the offensive coordinator of this team for
- 5:56Speaker 4: the better part of 20 years. It literally, he became
- 5:58Speaker 4: the offense coordinator for the first time in 2006. This
- 6:01Speaker 4: is what it has always been. There's always a buildup
- 6:05Speaker 4: and the offense is not the same in November and
- 6:08Speaker 4: December as it is in September. He builds to it.
- 6:10Speaker 4: And every year they start a little more vanilla. And
- 6:14Speaker 4: I think everybody gets shocked. And it's like, like you said,
- 6:16Speaker 4: ideally you're not starting one or two, but this is,
- 6:19Speaker 4: people look at it and say, this is it.
- 6:20Speaker 2: This is all they're going to do.
- 6:21Speaker 4: And it's like, no, there's literally decades of evidence that
- 6:24Speaker 4: he's going to build on this.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And I think people lose sight of that every year.
- 6:27Speaker 4: And then on May, yeah, you're right. The Bills game was,
- 6:30Speaker 4: there were some nitpicks in there. It was good, positive step.
- 6:33Speaker 4: You felt good. There were some things to clean up.
- 6:37Speaker 4: That Raiders game was one of the best games he's
- 6:39Speaker 4: played in his career. It might be, you know, if
- 6:42Speaker 4: you just look at the production, the best game. Now
- 6:44Speaker 4: he's had great, performances maybe not as much in the
- 6:48Speaker 4: box score but great performances against better opponents yeah so
- 6:51Speaker 4: i i don't you know depends how you want to
- 6:53Speaker 4: qualify best game of his career but it's up there
- 6:57Speaker 4: it's among the most impressive games in his career some
- 6:58Speaker 4: of the throws he made were unbelievable and again it's
- 7:01Speaker 4: it's not just the balls he completed i talked about
- 7:04Speaker 4: this last week against buffalo is a super encouraging trend
- 7:06Speaker 4: and you saw it again he really never put the
- 7:10Speaker 4: ball in harm's way. There was one sack he took
- 7:14Speaker 4: where I thought he was a little late to pull
- 7:15Speaker 4: the ball into his body. Didn't end up fumbling, but
- 7:16Speaker 4: like I go back to, there's play in the third quarter.
- 7:19Speaker 2: He was a deep out. Maybe it was a crosser.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Efton Chisholm ends up near the sideline and there's a
- 7:25Speaker 4: defender underneath him. And there's a defender over the top
- 7:28Speaker 4: and may throws the ball over the sideline. Maybe outside
- 7:32Speaker 4: shot Chisholm makes a play on it. And he didn't,
- 7:35Speaker 4: and it was incomplete, but there's zero chance. Either defender
- 7:40Speaker 4: is going to make a play on that ball. And I, I,
- 7:42Speaker 4: I turned to Matt off next to me and I said,
- 7:44Speaker 4: three weeks ago, that ball goes right to the underneath defender.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:47Speaker 4: So again, I don't know if you know which play
- 7:49Speaker 4: I'm talking about, if you have any more insight there,
- 7:51Speaker 4: but again, just, it's not the throws he's making.
- 7:53Speaker 6: It's that.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And then the one to rear it in, which is
- 7:55Speaker 2: probably his best throw of the day.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 2: The defender's not making a play on that ball.
- 8:01Speaker 4: And that's the, the completion percentage and some of the
- 8:05Speaker 4: sheer volume of, The downfield stuff from last year wasn't
- 8:08Speaker 4: going to carry over because it's just unrealistic.
- 8:11Speaker 2: There's nothing against him.
- 8:12Speaker 4: He was just so far above and beyond anything on
- 8:15Speaker 4: the deep ball efficiency. But one thing that I thought
- 8:19Speaker 4: could carry over was those 50-50 balls aren't really 50-50 balls.
- 8:23Speaker 4: He really protected the ball last year on deep throws,
- 8:27Speaker 4: and he obviously did not do that at the start
- 8:29Speaker 4: of this season, but he's.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Doing it now.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Yeah, no, the play that you're mentioning, it was a
- 8:34Speaker 3: sale concept into the boundary. So they have Efton Chisholm
- 8:37Speaker 3: running that corner route. And then Romeo Dobbs is running
- 8:41Speaker 3: the vertical, the clear route route. And it's the same
- 8:44Speaker 3: play that he hit Romeo Dobbs on on the dash
- 8:47Speaker 3: pass against Pittsburgh. On the big 60 plus yard or
- 8:50Speaker 3: whatever it was, same exact play. And, you know, watching
- 8:54Speaker 3: it back, I kind of felt like Dobbs was probably
- 8:56Speaker 3: a better option on the play. But to your point
- 8:58Speaker 3: where the ball is placed, at least he kept the
- 9:01Speaker 3: ball out of harm's way. And I think the biggest
- 9:04Speaker 3: stat that I, you know, going in this is we
- 9:06Speaker 3: can get into the good and the bad, the stuff
- 9:08Speaker 3: that gets you beat because he's obviously at the top
- 9:10Speaker 3: of the goods list. The stat that stands out to
- 9:12Speaker 3: me is that he had had a streak of nine
- 9:15Speaker 3: straight games with a turnover worthy play until Sunday. That
- 9:19Speaker 3: was the first game that he didn't register a turnover
- 9:21Speaker 3: worthy play. since week 17 of last season. So that's
- 9:25Speaker 3: the entire playoffs. That's the first four games of this season.
- 9:29Speaker 3: That is a long, too lengthy of a streak. And look,
- 9:33Speaker 3: not all of those games was like multiple turnover type games,
- 9:38Speaker 3: but he's putting the ball in harm's way at least
- 9:41Speaker 3: one time. You know, in the Denver game, I don't
- 9:43Speaker 3: think he technically turned the ball over in the AFC
- 9:46Speaker 3: championship game, but they had a dropped interception on the
- 9:48Speaker 3: very first drive of the game. That should have been intercepted.
- 9:52Speaker 3: So like his ability to keep the ball out of
- 9:54Speaker 3: harm's way, his decision making, you know, the word Vrabel
- 9:57Speaker 3: keeps using as decisiveness you know his decisiveness in the
- 10:00Speaker 3: pocket uh it looks night and day to me compared
- 10:04Speaker 3: to the first three weeks of the season and you
- 10:07Speaker 3: know I'm a big scheme guy I can point to
- 10:09Speaker 3: a million different things as to why I think the
- 10:12Speaker 3: play calling has been better. I should say more like
- 10:14Speaker 3: the play design and the play calling. I think those
- 10:16Speaker 3: are two different buckets. But at the same time with May,
- 10:21Speaker 3: I really just look at his confidence. You mentioned the
- 10:24Speaker 3: throw to Raritan that he made the wheel route, which
- 10:27Speaker 3: is as good of a throw as I've seen any
- 10:29Speaker 3: quarterback make in the league this season on film. I
- 10:32Speaker 3: don't know if he's even attempting that throw three weeks
- 10:37Speaker 3: ago because I don't know if he has the confidence
- 10:39Speaker 3: to that he's going to fit the ball into that window.
- 10:43Speaker 3: So like, those are the things that I think you
- 10:45Speaker 3: just see our night and day. You know, we know
- 10:47Speaker 3: that if teams give them the, the one-on-ones on the outside,
- 10:51Speaker 3: like the Kyle Williams and stuff like that, he he'll
- 10:53Speaker 3: dot those up. Like he'll throw those balls down the
- 10:55Speaker 3: field all day long. He was doing that to begin
- 10:57Speaker 3: the year too. But the throws into those tight window
- 11:01Speaker 3: throws along the sidelines, over the middle of the field,
- 11:04Speaker 3: things like that, those were the throws that I think
- 11:07Speaker 3: he was passing up in the first three weeks of
- 11:10Speaker 3: the season out of probably fear of turnover that he
- 11:14Speaker 3: is now.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Threading the needle on.
- 11:16Speaker 3: And as an NFL quarterback, like that's that throw to
- 11:20Speaker 3: Raritan is incredible, but it's NFL open, you know, like that,
- 11:24Speaker 3: that's a throw that franchise quarterback and elite quarterback is
- 11:29Speaker 3: expected to make in a lot of ways. So I've
- 11:32Speaker 3: just been blown away by this turnaround by Drake may.
- 11:36Speaker 3: And you know, the last that I'll give you the
- 11:38Speaker 3: first three weeks of the season, his big time throw
- 11:42Speaker 3: rate was just over 2%, 2.4%. The last two games
- 11:47Speaker 3: of the season against the Bills and the Raiders, it's
- 11:50Speaker 3: up over 10%. So we're talking about him going from
- 11:54Speaker 3: like a couple of big time throws in the first
- 11:57Speaker 3: three weeks to going to five this week and three
- 12:01Speaker 3: last week. I mean, he's making some high level plays. Now,
- 12:06Speaker 3: one little nitpick with PFF today. I will hit you with,
- 12:09Speaker 3: they counted the pop Douglas throw. That was incomplete as
- 12:13Speaker 3: a big time throw. There is no doubt that that's
- 12:16Speaker 3: a big time play, but we're not doing the Mahomes
- 12:19Speaker 3: thing with Drake may and counting incomplete passes as big
- 12:23Speaker 3: time throws. So I'm, I'm giving them four. It was
- 12:25Speaker 3: a great play. Don't get me wrong, but I just,
- 12:28Speaker 3: I hate that. I hate, I hate when we count
- 12:30Speaker 3: plays that didn't count or incomplete passes you gotta complete
- 12:35Speaker 3: the pass for it to be a big.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Time throw but i digress uh just a great great game.
- 12:40Speaker 4: That is right expected this that or whatever but yeah
- 12:43Speaker 4: and it feels like it's all building on itself like
- 12:46Speaker 4: you can see the confidence you can see as he
- 12:48Speaker 4: makes each throw he gets a little more confident he
- 12:50Speaker 4: looks a little more like he did last year the
- 12:52Speaker 4: confidence in the pocket the way he's maneuvering there the
- 12:55Speaker 4: confidence down the field so it it It felt like
- 12:58Speaker 4: it was snowballing the wrong way for the first three weeks. Now,
- 13:01Speaker 4: doesn't it kind of feel like it's snowballing the good way?
- 13:03Speaker 3: Yeah, his pocket movement's a great point, too, that you
- 13:06Speaker 3: just made because.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Best it's looked in, I mean, going back to maybe
- 13:11Speaker 4: any point last year.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and with his eyes down the field, too, right?
- 13:15Speaker 1: Like that, it's one thing to.
- 13:17Speaker 3: vacate a muddy pocket and scramble like he was doing
- 13:20Speaker 3: at the beginning part of the season. But to stay
- 13:23Speaker 3: a passer, as he likes to say, and keep his
- 13:25Speaker 3: eyes down the field, he had one to Chisholm on
- 13:27Speaker 3: a third downplay where there was pressure. Max Crosby got
- 13:31Speaker 3: some pressure off the edge on the right edge. There
- 13:34Speaker 3: was pressure up the middle and he went right through
- 13:36Speaker 3: the middle of the pocket and kind of squeaked through
- 13:38Speaker 3: the middle of the pocket to get into some clean
- 13:40Speaker 3: airspace and And Chisholm just found the void. He kind
- 13:42Speaker 3: of probed the zone and found the void and sat
- 13:44Speaker 3: it down right over the ball. And Drake may just
- 13:48Speaker 3: hit him for a first down. And I was like,
- 13:50Speaker 3: that was like Brady-esque, right? Like, you know, just little
- 13:53Speaker 3: subtle pocket movements. Like you don't have to always make
- 13:55Speaker 3: everything an extended play or a scramble drill. One last
- 13:59Speaker 3: metric at you. I'll throw at you and then we'll
- 14:01Speaker 3: go on to the next thing here.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yeah, just real quick on the pocket movement. And you
- 14:05Speaker 4: mentioned it being Brady. Like I just thought we've seen
- 14:08Speaker 4: him run around.
- 14:10Speaker 2: That's one thing.
- 14:11Speaker 4: And like, it went from him just taking off to running,
- 14:14Speaker 4: but remaining a thrower. This was the first time I
- 14:17Speaker 4: can remember over the course of a game where it's
- 14:19Speaker 4: like one step to the left, one and a half
- 14:21Speaker 4: steps to the right, like just little maneuvers to buy.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Now it helps that the pocket was unbelievable all day.
- 14:27Speaker 4: And as he said, he had time to eat a
- 14:28Speaker 4: ham sandwich back there, but those not even running, not
- 14:32Speaker 4: even scrambling, just one or two steps to reset himself
- 14:35Speaker 4: to get the lane he needed. that's high level quarterbacking.
- 14:38Speaker 4: And that's even last year is best. It's not necessarily
- 14:41Speaker 4: something he did a ton.
- 14:42Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:43Speaker 3: So before we move on to the next thing really quickly,
- 14:47Speaker 3: a little bit of, Patriots news from Adam Schefter just now,
- 14:50Speaker 3: just read it. Uh, Patriots running back Travion Henderson suffered
- 14:53Speaker 3: a high ankle sprain during Sunday's win over the Raiders
- 14:56Speaker 3: as now expected to side hit sideline him for multiple weeks.
- 14:59Speaker 3: So no surgery as of right now for Travion Henderson, but, um,
- 15:03Speaker 3: it sounds like, uh, he's going to miss a couple
- 15:06Speaker 3: of weeks and high ankle sprains. You know, that's what
- 15:07Speaker 3: AJ Brown had and he ended up on injured reserve.
- 15:10Speaker 3: So I wouldn't be surprised if Travion Henderson is headed
- 15:13Speaker 3: there as well.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Uh, they only have, I have.
- 15:16Speaker 2: A, uh, Injury report take if you want to get
- 15:19Speaker 2: to it.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Let's get to the injury. I have the injuries on
- 15:22Speaker 3: the bads because the injuries are bad. So let's let's
- 15:25Speaker 3: let's stick with the plan here and then we'll get
- 15:27Speaker 3: to the injuries. But I just wanted to read that
- 15:29Speaker 3: because it just literally came across my feed just now.
- 15:33Speaker 3: The last last metric on Drake May because I could
- 15:36Speaker 3: probably recite like 17 of these.
- 15:38Speaker 5: Right.
- 15:39Speaker 1: After a game like that.
- 15:41Speaker 3: But in terms of total EPA, so not drop back,
- 15:44Speaker 3: not per drop back, but just total volume EPA, that
- 15:48Speaker 3: was the best game. Any quarterback has had in the
- 15:50Speaker 3: NFL this season. So any quarterback, any team, he accumulated
- 15:57Speaker 3: plus 28.7 total EPA in this game, which was the
- 16:00Speaker 3: highest of any quarterback in the league this year. So
- 16:04Speaker 3: by the metrics, one of, if not the most efficient
- 16:08Speaker 3: passing performance of the season so far in the NFL.
- 16:11Speaker 1: And if you're going to sit here and say, Oh,
- 16:13Speaker 1: it's the Raiders. They stink.
- 16:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:15Speaker 3: The other quarterbacks weren't doing that against the Raiders in
- 16:17Speaker 3: the first four weeks of the season, right?
- 16:19Speaker 1: Like they, you didn't see, right.
- 16:21Speaker 3: We weren't reciting that Patrick Mahomes, even though they put
- 16:23Speaker 3: up 30 points, we weren't saying that Patrick Mahomes was
- 16:27Speaker 3: having that kind of efficiency against this Raiders defense a
- 16:29Speaker 3: week ago. So yeah, Just a tremendous performance by, by may.
- 16:34Speaker 3: And he, he looks like an MVP candidate again. Next
- 16:38Speaker 3: item on my list here, depth wide receivers. I think
- 16:42Speaker 3: all these guys really stepped up in this game and
- 16:45Speaker 3: that's going to be a theme of the rest of
- 16:46Speaker 3: the goods. You know, guys stepping up injury replacements, Kyle Williams,
- 16:51Speaker 3: DeMario Douglas, Efton Chisholm, all contributing to this win. Kyle Williams, his, his,
- 16:59Speaker 3: speed and his vertical separation ability, uh, is something that
- 17:04Speaker 3: even when AJ Brown comes back, I, I do think
- 17:07Speaker 3: you need to get it on the field 20 to
- 17:09Speaker 3: 25 times a game. Like they need to give him,
- 17:11Speaker 3: even if he's just running go routes on the outside,
- 17:13Speaker 3: which I wish they would do a little bit more
- 17:15Speaker 3: with him than just that. Uh, but still, uh, The,
- 17:19Speaker 3: the 34 yard touchdown is for a pass that traveled
- 17:23Speaker 3: almost 40 yards in the air is kind of as
- 17:25Speaker 3: easy as it gets, right?
- 17:26Speaker 1: Like the, the, the, the receiver just goes right by
- 17:30Speaker 1: the cornerback.
- 17:31Speaker 3: And then he had the big, you know, 50 yard
- 17:33Speaker 3: deep post on the cover zero blitz as well.
- 17:36Speaker 1: He has a, he has a superpower.
- 17:38Speaker 3: That is a special trait that he has to get
- 17:41Speaker 3: over the top of defenses and stretch the field vertically.
- 17:45Speaker 3: And you have one of the best, deep ball passers
- 17:47Speaker 3: in the NFL playing quarterback for your team it just
- 17:50Speaker 3: feels like they need to at least continue to incorporate
- 17:54Speaker 3: Kyle Williams in some capacity here moving forward yeah I've
- 17:58Speaker 3: said this a million times about Kyle Williams he I
- 18:00Speaker 3: don't think he's going to be a guy at least
- 18:01Speaker 3: not in the near future who knows you know three
- 18:03Speaker 3: four five years but he's not a volume guy he's
- 18:06Speaker 3: not going to be a guy that catches seven or
- 18:08Speaker 3: eight passes a game but it's it's what he can
- 18:10Speaker 3: do with those two or three catches and is it
- 18:12Speaker 3: two or three for 15 or is it I mean
- 18:14Speaker 3: it's three for.
- 18:14Speaker 2: 91 on Sunday so.
- 18:17Speaker 4: And he talked about how he needed that, you know,
- 18:20Speaker 4: easy to kind of get down on yourself. I think
- 18:21Speaker 4: in that spot where he was clearly the last guy
- 18:23Speaker 4: in the depth chart, but getting him more involved.
- 18:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 4: If you have a guy, you know, can get you
- 18:28Speaker 4: an explosive play every week. That in itself is your
- 18:30Speaker 4: fourth or fifth receivers. Right.
- 18:32Speaker 2: So he's got to keep doing it.
- 18:34Speaker 4: I don't think the Raiders corners are terrible.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I mean, they'll face better.
- 18:38Speaker 4: I don't think they're terrible, but like, if that's kind
- 18:40Speaker 4: of what he is every week, you take that, you take.
- 18:41Speaker 2: That all day.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And one thing I really liked, So there was the
- 18:45Speaker 4: deep go, the deep post. I forget if we talked
- 18:48Speaker 4: about this on or off the air. Getting him in
- 18:50Speaker 4: more catch-and-run situations, which they hadn't been doing. And they
- 18:54Speaker 4: tried that late in the game. They had a third
- 18:55Speaker 4: and 16. He ultimately didn't pick it up, but that
- 18:58Speaker 4: kind of route, that kind of concept for him. Get
- 19:01Speaker 4: him the ball in stride and let him try to
- 19:04Speaker 4: cross the field and let him try to turn the
- 19:05Speaker 4: corner and get upfield. I think that's somewhere he could
- 19:08Speaker 4: be effective as well. So maybe there's some more of that.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Coming for him.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a little downfield screen. I really liked
- 19:13Speaker 3: that play, actually, because they didn't get it. And I
- 19:16Speaker 3: know we're talking about a failed third down conversion, but
- 19:18Speaker 3: they were backed up.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Near their own end zone. It's third and 16. You
- 19:23Speaker 1: have a comfortable lead.
- 19:24Speaker 3: There's no reason to try to push the ball down
- 19:25Speaker 3: the field and put it in harm's way, right? So
- 19:28Speaker 3: they just run a little downfield screen to one of
- 19:30Speaker 3: your fastest players, get the ball in Kyle Williams' hands.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Didn't end up working out, but I like the idea
- 19:35Speaker 3: of it. In that kind of situation. Also, just I
- 19:38Speaker 3: thought this was one of DeMario Douglas's best games, maybe
- 19:42Speaker 3: as a pro. Honestly, like I know the stats don't
- 19:45Speaker 3: back that up. I think he's had bigger games like
- 19:47Speaker 3: against Houston and you know, games last year where he
- 19:50Speaker 3: had a hundred receiving yards, things like that. But just the,
- 19:54Speaker 3: the efficiency of his route running, the precision of his
- 19:57Speaker 3: route running in this game, I thought was as good
- 20:00Speaker 3: as I've seen it from Douglas. The two plays that
- 20:02Speaker 3: stand out, the fourth down conversion where Drake may went
- 20:07Speaker 3: to him against man coverage was, gets open on the out,
- 20:10Speaker 3: runs a great route, you know, stems it up, breaks
- 20:13Speaker 3: it out, uh, evens out at the top of the
- 20:15Speaker 3: route to make sure it doesn't get undercut. I mean,
- 20:17Speaker 3: just a perfect route. Like that's exactly how you're supposed
- 20:20Speaker 3: to run that route, uh, on the film. And then the, uh,
- 20:23Speaker 3: he settled in zone. He settled in zone for a
- 20:26Speaker 3: 16 yard, uh, catch as well, uh, into a tricky
- 20:29Speaker 3: cover to, uh, found the soft spot, settled down quickly,
- 20:33Speaker 3: made himself available, uh, Nice, easy pitch and catch. I
- 20:36Speaker 3: think Mike Rabel caught it, a professional football play yesterday.
- 20:40Speaker 3: That was extremely encouraging from Douglas because we know he
- 20:43Speaker 3: can get open down the.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Field, and he's a great separator. He's a great route runner.
- 20:47Speaker 1: He's explosive. He's quick.
- 20:49Speaker 3: He's a really good separator. But to see the precision
- 20:53Speaker 3: and sort of the detail of his routes, also a backup.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Rabel used a word to describe Brock Bowers last week
- 21:00Speaker 3: that I love.
- 21:01Speaker 1: The route craft.
- 21:02Speaker 3: That tomorrow Douglas played with on Sunday, I thought was, uh,
- 21:06Speaker 3: really high level stuff. And we know, like I said, he,
- 21:09Speaker 3: we know he can get open, like on the busted
- 21:11Speaker 3: coverage on his first touchdown, like that he can get
- 21:14Speaker 3: open on those vertical routes. Uh, and we we've seen
- 21:17Speaker 3: that before, but, uh, the, they need him to be
- 21:20Speaker 3: a chain mover light in the way that he was
- 21:23Speaker 3: in this game at times on Sunday, especially on that
- 21:25Speaker 3: fourth down play.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought it was nice seeing his role kind
- 21:30Speaker 2: of expand like that.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Obviously, you know, I'm somebody who's been a proponent of
- 21:33Speaker 4: him being more involved, what his speed can do, what
- 21:35Speaker 4: his shiftingness can do.
- 21:36Speaker 2: So, and it just looked, that was, you know, all
- 21:39Speaker 2: the stuff I talked about in the summer.
- 21:41Speaker 4: And obviously I was very high on him in the
- 21:42Speaker 4: summer and some people very fairly called me out. And,
- 21:45Speaker 4: you know, we've seen this before and I kept saying it,
- 21:48Speaker 4: just the chemistry between Douglas and May look different. That
- 21:51Speaker 4: looked more like the connection we saw this summer than
- 21:53Speaker 4: what we've seen the first four weeks.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. And wichism. a hook and ladder. Are
- 21:59Speaker 1: you kidding me? That, that, that was great. That was designed.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Yes or no.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Obviously designed. Like the fact that we were having that, like,
- 22:07Speaker 1: I mean, come on, what are we doing?
- 22:09Speaker 2: It was, I mean, Drake didn't want to give the
- 22:11Speaker 2: secrets away. I get it.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I know.
- 22:12Speaker 3: But like after Vrabel said it multiple times, he said
- 22:15Speaker 3: it after the game. And then he said it on
- 22:17Speaker 3: EEI in the morning. And then Chisholm himself said it
- 22:20Speaker 3: as well. Like it kind of was out of the bag.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Like it's on film. Like it is what it is.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Like it just, No reason for all the coyness. You
- 22:29Speaker 3: mentioned the offensive line earlier. I definitely had them on
- 22:33Speaker 3: the goods. I thought that over the course of the game,
- 22:36Speaker 3: I didn't necessarily feel like it was as good as
- 22:39Speaker 3: I thought watching live, but I.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Will give them this.
- 22:43Speaker 3: They had several like crystal clean pockets, right? Like just
- 22:48Speaker 3: like pockets that Drake may, as he said, could eat
- 22:52Speaker 3: a ham sandwich in. And that was not something that
- 22:55Speaker 3: we saw necessarily, I would say, the first four or
- 22:58Speaker 3: five weeks of the season. But this week, PFF had
- 23:02Speaker 3: a 34.2% pressure rate. NextGen was a little bit higher
- 23:06Speaker 3: at 39.5%. So we can split the baby there and
- 23:11Speaker 3: call it 36%, 37% pressure rate if we want. An
- 23:16Speaker 3: improvement for sure, but I would say what really stood
- 23:19Speaker 3: out to me was some of those pockets, man, like,
- 23:22Speaker 3: you know, you and I could sit in some of
- 23:24Speaker 3: those pockets and that, that we didn't necessarily see to
- 23:27Speaker 3: start the season this year.
- 23:29Speaker 2: No, no, they, they look good.
- 23:31Speaker 4: And I mean, the only time I think I noticed
- 23:34Speaker 4: Max Crosby was when he got that, that unsportsmanlike conduct
- 23:37Speaker 4: penalty was after the touchdown or after the PAT. So they,
- 23:41Speaker 4: I was, you know, I, I've said this, like, I
- 23:44Speaker 4: think they can get by because of May's mobility and,
- 23:47Speaker 4: at least from a pass blocking standpoint, they don't have
- 23:49Speaker 4: to have the best offensive line in the league.
- 23:51Speaker 2: I think they just need to be good and they've
- 23:53Speaker 2: been good. That was great. That was great. Pass protection
- 23:58Speaker 2: all pretty much all day.
- 23:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 1: You mentioned Crosby.
- 24:01Speaker 3: I thought that he got Moses a couple of times
- 24:03Speaker 3: on rewatch and then some of the interior stunts that
- 24:07Speaker 3: the Raiders were running gave them a little bit of.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Problems, but Overall, I thought that it was really, really good.
- 24:13Speaker 3: And, you know, I've been a little bit critical of
- 24:17Speaker 3: the Caleb Lomu selection.
- 24:19Speaker 1: First time out, extended action. He was solid. He was
- 24:23Speaker 1: good in this game.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Now, what I think impresses me the most about his
- 24:28Speaker 3: ability in pass protection is his recovery talent is extremely good. Like,
- 24:33Speaker 3: I think that there's still some things early in his
- 24:35Speaker 3: pass set that they can work on him with, you know, angles, footwork,
- 24:39Speaker 3: things like that. coming out of his stance where he, uh,
- 24:42Speaker 3: maybe gets a little bit, uh, opens a little bit
- 24:45Speaker 3: early and creates a little bit of a soft corner
- 24:47Speaker 3: sometimes by doing that, or I should say, you know,
- 24:49Speaker 3: short corner. Uh, but I think that his ability to
- 24:52Speaker 3: run his feet and then get to the apex and
- 24:55Speaker 3: be able to meet the rusher at the apex, even
- 24:58Speaker 3: when he loses initially is, uh, extremely impressive. Now you
- 25:02Speaker 3: don't want to always be recovering like that. Like that's
- 25:04Speaker 3: not a way a consistent.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Way to live.
- 25:07Speaker 3: But I thought that he was, he was really solid
- 25:10Speaker 3: at left tackle. I don't think it's a mistake or
- 25:12Speaker 3: a coincidence that he looked comfortable playing left.
- 25:16Speaker 1: You know, I don't know.
- 25:17Speaker 3: I would be interested to see what it looked like
- 25:18Speaker 3: if he had to play right. But overall, if Will
- 25:21Speaker 3: Campbell's going to miss some time here and that's the
- 25:24Speaker 3: level of performance you get out of Caleb Lomu, I
- 25:26Speaker 3: think you feel pretty good about it. I kind of
- 25:30Speaker 3: felt like, you know, I think good and bad kind
- 25:33Speaker 3: of reminded me of Will Campbell last year. where you
- 25:36Speaker 3: saw some spots where rookie needs to grow, but you
- 25:41Speaker 3: also saw the flashes that make him a first-round pick.
- 25:43Speaker 4: So we'll see next week. And now he'll have a
- 25:46Speaker 4: whole week under his belt to practice. David Bailey's a
- 25:49Speaker 4: legit test. He's been great all year. He was great
- 25:52Speaker 4: last week. They actually played each other in college. So
- 25:54Speaker 4: that'll be interesting to see, a little Big 12 matchup. But, yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 4: I mean, if you can get that out of him,
- 26:00Speaker 4: that kind of game, that'll do until Campbell comes back.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see, you know, last week
- 26:07Speaker 3: Crosby rushes over the right tackle. David Bailey has rushed
- 26:10Speaker 3: mostly over the right tackle. And his very first pass
- 26:15Speaker 3: blocking snap, the Raiders put Crosby over Lomu. It was
- 26:19Speaker 3: the only time that they did it the entire rest
- 26:21Speaker 3: of the game. They did it one time.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:23Speaker 3: And I'm going to talk about the Raiders coaching and
- 26:25Speaker 3: the bads. They deserve to be in the pads. But
- 26:28Speaker 3: I just thought that that was so bizarre. Like you
- 26:30Speaker 3: have this rookie who has never really played in an
- 26:34Speaker 3: NFL game yet besides some six line stuff and some
- 26:36Speaker 3: mop up duty at right tackle. And you don't put
- 26:40Speaker 3: one of the best pass rushers in football over him
- 26:43Speaker 3: a couple of times to test them a little bit.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Even the rep that they put him on, Crosby.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Right out of the shoot, it was a blitz and
- 26:52Speaker 3: Crosby wasn't really giving his best rush. Like he was
- 26:55Speaker 3: just trying to occupy Lomu on that side of things.
- 26:58Speaker 3: So they tried to get him with scheme. I would
- 27:00Speaker 3: say more so than trying to just let Crosby go
- 27:03Speaker 3: one-on-one against him. I was pretty surprised by that, but
- 27:06Speaker 3: this week, David Bailey, right? Tackle guy also rushes over
- 27:10Speaker 3: the right tackle for the most part. So We'll see
- 27:12Speaker 3: if they flip sides with him or if they have
- 27:14Speaker 3: him go against Moses. We'll get to that on Thursday,
- 27:17Speaker 3: but I was pretty impressed by Bailey watching some Jets
- 27:20Speaker 3: tape over the last couple of days.
- 27:22Speaker 1: All right, let's move over to the defense.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Going back to who had to step up in depth
- 27:28Speaker 3: and all that stuff, the depth corners. I thought Charles
- 27:31Speaker 3: Woods and Kendall Vildor both played really well in this game.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Now, we talked about going into the game, Alex.
- 27:37Speaker 3: The Raiders don't really have many wide receivers. They have Bowers,
- 27:40Speaker 3: but they don't really have many wide receivers. That being said,
- 27:44Speaker 3: I thought that those two guys, Vildor and Woods, won
- 27:47Speaker 3: their matchups.
- 27:48Speaker 5: And.
- 27:48Speaker 3: there's something to be said for that. It was a
- 27:50Speaker 3: big part of this game. Both of them had a
- 27:52Speaker 3: past breakups. Woods had multiple press past breakups. Vildor forces
- 27:57Speaker 3: the fumble with a peanut punch as well. I just
- 28:00Speaker 3: thought both those guys were a big contributor to this game.
- 28:04Speaker 3: And again, I know everyone's going to say, well, it's
- 28:06Speaker 3: the Raiders and the Raiders apparently stink. Now this was
- 28:09Speaker 3: the first time all season long out of their five
- 28:12Speaker 3: games that the Raiders produced a negative EPA per drop
- 28:15Speaker 3: back in a game this season. So the Patriots made
- 28:19Speaker 3: the Raiders passing offense and their offense as.
- 28:22Speaker 1: A whole look a whole lot worse than everybody else did.
- 28:25Speaker 5: Right.
- 28:25Speaker 3: And that's all you're really asking for when you're playing
- 28:28Speaker 3: opponents like this. They put up 27 points last week
- 28:30Speaker 3: against Kansas City. So this wasn't a Raiders team that
- 28:34Speaker 3: was coming in that had no offense. And the Patriots
- 28:37Speaker 3: made it look like they had no offense.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Once they figure it in, look, I guess I get it.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Marcus Jones, talent on talent. But Bauer's too big, too strong.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll get to that. We talked about this with
- 28:49Speaker 2: Marcus Jones, he's a great player.
- 28:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:51Speaker 4: Once they kind of switched off of that, the Raiders
- 28:53Speaker 4: didn't have any answers. And I like some of the
- 28:55Speaker 4: wrinkles they put in on Bauer's. They did some of
- 28:57Speaker 4: the stuff we talked about Thursday, jamming him with safeties.
- 28:59Speaker 4: They had Christian Ellis jam him on a third down,
- 29:01Speaker 4: passing him off to corners. Kendall Vildor, I thought, stepped
- 29:04Speaker 4: up big there. And then they got the push in
- 29:06Speaker 4: the run game, and they stopped the run.
- 29:07Speaker 8: So.
- 29:08Speaker 4: It really, we knew it going in. If they could
- 29:10Speaker 4: take Bowers out and I know he still had like
- 29:12Speaker 4: eight for one 10 or whatever it was six from one.
- 29:13Speaker 1: 10, but yeah, eight for one 10.
- 29:15Speaker 2: It didn't, I don't know. I don't know how to
- 29:17Speaker 2: say this without sounding. It was, was it an impactful
- 29:19Speaker 2: 110 yards? First half it was.
- 29:22Speaker 1: It was in the first half.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Not so much.
- 29:24Speaker 3: It was in the first half. But the comparison that
- 29:28Speaker 3: I would use, and we're going to get to this
- 29:29Speaker 3: in the bads, because I didn't love their plan.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Out of the gate on Bowers.
- 29:33Speaker 3: But the the comparison I would use is like, you know,
- 29:36Speaker 3: sometimes in, in basketball, they're like, we're going to let
- 29:39Speaker 3: the star player go for 50, but none of the
- 29:42Speaker 3: role players are going to score.
- 29:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Like we're going.
- 29:44Speaker 2: To, we're going to put up 500 yards of offense today.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Can Brock Bowers match that on his right.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:49Speaker 3: And I was kind of the approach that I think
- 29:51Speaker 3: that they took to it to an extent, especially.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Early on in the game.
- 29:55Speaker 3: And then once it got a little bit carried away
- 29:57Speaker 3: there on the first drive, they started to do some
- 29:59Speaker 3: different things against him. One more on the goods and
- 30:02Speaker 3: we got to take a quick break and then we'll
- 30:04Speaker 3: get to more on the Bauer stuff. The pass rush,
- 30:06Speaker 3: the pass rush again was was just terrific. Next gen
- 30:11Speaker 3: had it at forty eight point five percent pressure rate,
- 30:14Speaker 3: almost 50 percent pressure rate on Kirk Cousins in this game.
- 30:18Speaker 3: it stuns me how teams come in every single week.
- 30:21Speaker 3: And the Patriots have been guilty of this in the
- 30:23Speaker 3: past too, especially against Seattle and the two games against
- 30:26Speaker 3: the Seahawks without answers to cover zero. Like you don't
- 30:31Speaker 3: have a plan for how the quarterback is going to
- 30:35Speaker 3: either throw hot or you're going to block cover zero.
- 30:37Speaker 1: So the Patriots brought cover zero, you know, all.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Out pressure and, on Kirk cousins five times, he was
- 30:44Speaker 3: one for five for four yards on those play. His
- 30:48Speaker 3: passer rating was 39.6. The same as if you spike
- 30:51Speaker 3: the ball into the ground five times. So that's pretty
- 30:54Speaker 3: much what he did. Honestly, on, on four of them,
- 30:57Speaker 3: he kind of threw uncatchable balls. One of them right
- 31:00Speaker 3: out of the shoot was Charles woods, jumped it out
- 31:03Speaker 3: to a gentee that was almost intercepted for a pick six.
- 31:06Speaker 3: They had no answers there. for the Patriots zero pressures.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Kevin Byard came in twice, just completely unblocked off the edge.
- 31:14Speaker 1: It was, and it was just numbers.
- 31:15Speaker 3: It was just, the Raiders had six blockers and the
- 31:18Speaker 3: Patriots were blitzing seven guys. I, there was just no
- 31:21Speaker 3: answers there for the Raiders for that. I thought that
- 31:23Speaker 3: that completely threw cousins off his game. They blitzed them early.
- 31:27Speaker 3: They had a 60% blitz rate in the first quarter and,
- 31:29Speaker 3: I thought he was rattled after that. They dropped out
- 31:32Speaker 3: of it a lot in the, in the second and
- 31:33Speaker 3: third quarters in the fourth quarter a little bit. And
- 31:36Speaker 3: I just didn't think he saw the field well after that.
- 31:39Speaker 3: And I think he was a little bit sped up
- 31:41Speaker 3: and it was like, One of those situations where you
- 31:44Speaker 3: hit him early, you hit him often, and then all
- 31:46Speaker 3: of a sudden, you know, the quarterback unravels from there.
- 31:49Speaker 3: I'm not surprised at all that that was the plan
- 31:51Speaker 3: against the 38-year-old Kirk Cousins, who's just going to sit
- 31:54Speaker 3: in the middle of the pocket. I am shocked that
- 31:56Speaker 3: the Raiders and Cousins didn't get the ball out of
- 31:58Speaker 3: his hands quicker and have some more options for him
- 32:01Speaker 3: to be able to beat those pressures.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Well, they didn't have that many guys to throw the
- 32:04Speaker 2: ball to, so.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Maybe that was it.
- 32:07Speaker 3: But like the backs Bowers, like they got Bowers on
- 32:10Speaker 3: one fire zone. He hit that 18 yard cross or
- 32:13Speaker 3: underneath the defense the one time, which was wasn't a
- 32:16Speaker 3: pure cover zero, but it kind of was because they
- 32:18Speaker 3: only had five guys in coverage. It was a Brian
- 32:20Speaker 3: Flores fire zone. But other than that, I just felt
- 32:24Speaker 3: like they had no answers. Last thing on the pass rush.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Millen Williams.
- 32:30Speaker 3: I thought Millen Williams was back to being a highly
- 32:33Speaker 3: impactful player. I had him with five pressures in this game.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Is it a coincidence that that happened as Christian Barmore returned?
- 32:41Speaker 1: It might not be.
- 32:42Speaker 3: I thought Barmore looked a little rusty, but I think
- 32:45Speaker 3: Milton Williams looked like. And I kind of thought watching
- 32:49Speaker 3: the film, like his suddenness, his explosiveness, his ability to
- 32:54Speaker 3: impact the play without making the tackle or without having
- 32:57Speaker 3: the sack or whatever. I thought that those things were
- 32:59Speaker 3: still popping up in the first four weeks of the season.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Like I never was watching him being like. he's lost
- 33:05Speaker 3: a step. You know, like I, I didn't see anything
- 33:07Speaker 3: like that. I think the double teams that he was seeing,
- 33:10Speaker 3: he's doubled a little bit less in this game. I
- 33:13Speaker 3: think he was getting kind of used to that. Like
- 33:14Speaker 3: he's used to playing on lines with Jalen Carter and
- 33:17Speaker 3: Jordan Davis and you know, bar more obviously like guys
- 33:21Speaker 3: that are getting doubled to, you know, are getting most
- 33:24Speaker 3: of the double teams. He's a Tuesday player now.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Like he is.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Their guy on the defensive front. I don't think it's
- 33:31Speaker 3: a coincidence that, Ponder and Akis and Draymond Jones are
- 33:34Speaker 3: off to such a great start. Cause I think a
- 33:36Speaker 3: lot of that attention on the offensive line is going
- 33:38Speaker 3: into those middle two guys. And those guys just got
- 33:41Speaker 3: one-on-ones for, you know, 40 dropbacks a game. And Ponder's
- 33:44Speaker 3: a good rusher. Like if you give him that type
- 33:46Speaker 3: of opportunity, he's going to get home a couple of times.
- 33:48Speaker 3: So a much better game from Millen Williams. This pass
- 33:51Speaker 3: rush and the edge rushers specifically, Alex, have been kind
- 33:54Speaker 3: of a revelation to me. Like I did not expect
- 33:56Speaker 3: this kind of pressure on quarterbacks. I know some of
- 33:59Speaker 3: it's from blitzing, but overall, it's just been it's been
- 34:02Speaker 3: cool to watch some of these young guys like Actus, Ponder,
- 34:06Speaker 3: young players.
- 34:07Speaker 1: How badly did they need that?
- 34:09Speaker 3: They needed some young edge rushers to emerge and break
- 34:12Speaker 3: out in a UDFA and a second round pick. Maybe
- 34:15Speaker 3: being your starting edge guys here moving forward for the
- 34:19Speaker 3: long term future of this team is a really that's all.
- 34:23Speaker 1: That's a really good thing for the Patriots. That's a
- 34:25Speaker 1: really good thing.
- 34:27Speaker 4: Now just get secondary healthy so we can see this
- 34:29Speaker 4: whole defense together.
- 34:30Speaker 2: I'm excited for that. Whenever we get it, it's going
- 34:32Speaker 2: to be fun to watch.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. All right, we're going to hit a quick break.
- 34:35Speaker 3: We'll get to the bad and the stuff that gets
- 34:37Speaker 3: you beat.

- 36:57Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 36:58Speaker 4: I'm good.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Let's lay in this. Okay.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Let's, let's get to the bads here. We just, we
- 37:02Speaker 1: just talked about it.
- 37:03Speaker 3: I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I
- 37:05Speaker 3: didn't love the, the initial coverage plan against Bowers. I
- 37:08Speaker 3: understood what they were going for with Marcus Jones. He's
- 37:12Speaker 3: their best corner in this game. He's also a guy
- 37:14Speaker 3: that can travel, you know, can play in the slot,
- 37:16Speaker 3: can play outside. You, you might not trust or have
- 37:20Speaker 3: the same confidence in Kendall Vildor, Charles Woods, who are
- 37:23Speaker 3: a little bit bigger and, Uh, they haven't played as
- 37:26Speaker 3: much in the slot. And in the summertime we saw
- 37:28Speaker 3: Charles was in the slide. It didn't go so well.
- 37:30Speaker 3: So I think that they were just trying to put
- 37:32Speaker 3: their best guy on Brock Bowers and see how it went.
- 37:35Speaker 1: It didn't go particularly well.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Uh, he just got mossed on two plays at the
- 37:39Speaker 3: catch point that he's just Bowers is a shade over six,
- 37:42Speaker 3: three Marcus Jones is five foot eight. He's given up
- 37:45Speaker 3: like 60, 65 pounds of beef to Brock Bowers too.
- 37:49Speaker 3: It's just a tough spot to put Marcus Jones in,
- 37:52Speaker 3: but luckily they got off of that pretty quickly, but
- 37:54Speaker 3: I just, I got out of the shoot. Maybe it
- 37:56Speaker 3: was like, let's just try it and see if Marcus
- 37:59Speaker 3: Jones can hold his own against him, but it wasn't
- 38:01Speaker 3: the right approach.
- 38:03Speaker 2: It shows you how much they believe in Marcus Jones
- 38:05Speaker 2: and just.
- 38:05Speaker 1: And we all love Marcus Jones. He's a great player,
- 38:08Speaker 1: but yeah.
- 38:09Speaker 4: And you know, we're going to put our most talented
- 38:10Speaker 4: cover guy, at least that was on the field in
- 38:12Speaker 4: that game on their best receiver and see how that goes.
- 38:15Speaker 2: And, um, you know, creds them for adjusting away. And
- 38:19Speaker 2: it's funny.
- 38:19Speaker 4: We, we spent the whole week talking about, well, are
- 38:23Speaker 4: they going to do this?
- 38:24Speaker 2: And is this the answer? Are they going to do that?
- 38:26Speaker 2: And is that the answer?
- 38:27Speaker 4: And trying to find like the one answer for Brock
- 38:28Speaker 4: Bowers in the end, what worked was a little bit
- 38:30Speaker 4: of everything.
- 38:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 38:31Speaker 4: And almost turning into a mental challenge and not just
- 38:34Speaker 4: Brock Bowers having to beat a coverage, but him and
- 38:36Speaker 4: cousins having to recognize what coverage they were going to
- 38:38Speaker 4: get every snap. So they ultimately got there, but yeah,
- 38:41Speaker 4: I thought they were a little slow. I understand why
- 38:45Speaker 4: they went with it. I probably wouldn't have done it,
- 38:47Speaker 4: but I understand why they went with it off the jump.
- 38:50Speaker 2: They were a little slow to get out of it.
- 38:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 38:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:52Speaker 3: It's an interesting problem moving forward because, you know, obviously
- 38:55Speaker 3: they did a great job on Kincaid the week before
- 38:58Speaker 3: in Buffalo. Now, Buffalo kind of took him out of
- 39:01Speaker 3: the game on their own a little bit, too.
- 39:03Speaker 2: The Bills remembering they can run the ball.
- 39:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 39:05Speaker 8: Right.
- 39:06Speaker 3: But at the same time, their matchups against tight ends,
- 39:10Speaker 3: you know how they do that moving forward when they
- 39:12Speaker 3: get Gonzalez and Davis back. I still feel like and
- 39:15Speaker 3: we've been banging this drum, I feel like for two
- 39:18Speaker 3: years now. I still feel like Carlton Davis on the
- 39:21Speaker 3: tight end when it's a big time pass catching tight
- 39:23Speaker 3: end like Bowers. That to me feels like the best
- 39:26Speaker 3: approach once they get everybody healthy.
- 39:29Speaker 1: A physical.
- 39:30Speaker 3: you know, press man kind of corner against a player
- 39:33Speaker 3: like that. Not that Gonzalez couldn't cover him too, but
- 39:36Speaker 3: Gonzalez is, you know, not quite as physical as Carlton
- 39:38Speaker 3: Davis is. I just feel like that that's the matchup
- 39:42Speaker 3: that I want to see at some point, whether it's
- 39:44Speaker 3: against a Kincaid or, you know, whoever the case may
- 39:47Speaker 3: be here moving forward. the other things I had just
- 39:51Speaker 3: from the game. And then I want to get to
- 39:52Speaker 3: the injuries. Um, Romeo Dobbs. I just felt like the
- 39:58Speaker 3: incompletions through contact were kind of rough. Like one of them,
- 40:01Speaker 3: I feel like was a good pass breakup, you know,
- 40:04Speaker 3: late hands by the corner to get the ball out
- 40:07Speaker 3: of there. Maybe a slight, slight under throw by Drake may,
- 40:10Speaker 3: like if he puts that in the back of the
- 40:11Speaker 3: end zone, Instead of, you know, throwing to him more
- 40:14Speaker 3: in the front of the end zone, does Dobbs outrun
- 40:16Speaker 3: the corner at that point and just catch the ball
- 40:19Speaker 3: over his shoulder? I would say that was more of
- 40:21Speaker 3: like a good play by the corner, but still at
- 40:24Speaker 3: the end of the day, the ball hit him in
- 40:25Speaker 3: the hands three times and he dropped all three of them,
- 40:28Speaker 3: you know, like, and at some point you would like
- 40:30Speaker 3: to see him be able to finish through some contact
- 40:33Speaker 3: and make a play in a contested situation for the quarterback.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:38Speaker 4: And that's been, I mean, we saw him do it
- 40:40Speaker 4: a ton of camp. That's been a strength of his.
- 40:41Speaker 4: So We know he can do it. He just needs
- 40:44Speaker 4: to do it more consistently.
- 40:45Speaker 1: He did.
- 40:45Speaker 3: He made a catch in the, in the end zone
- 40:47Speaker 3: and training camp. That was just like the one that Drake.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Had that exact catch.
- 40:50Speaker 1: That's exactly what I was thinking. Yeah. The exact same play.
- 40:53Speaker 3: They ran the same play to the, the passing strength
- 40:56Speaker 3: that they ran on the fourth down to Hunter Henry, that,
- 40:59Speaker 3: that little, you know, double slant from the bunch. and
- 41:02Speaker 3: they had, uh, Dobbs isolated. It was three by one.
- 41:05Speaker 3: They had Dobbs on the one-on-one on the backside and
- 41:08Speaker 3: they had four over three. The defense did over the
- 41:10Speaker 3: slant side that time. Uh, they'd kind of recognized it,
- 41:13Speaker 3: I think. And so he took the one-on-one and he
- 41:15Speaker 3: gave Dobbs a chance on the ball and he just
- 41:17Speaker 3: couldn't catch it, you know? So I, I understood the
- 41:20Speaker 3: process and I, I thought it was a good, a
- 41:22Speaker 3: good decision.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Uh, they just couldn't get the ball completed.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Uh, just a few minutes on, I just thought the
- 41:28Speaker 3: Raiders coaching staff was really disappointing in this game. Um,
- 41:33Speaker 3: I hate crapping on the other team's coaching staff, but like,
- 41:36Speaker 3: I think the two main.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Things, you just don't want to crap on Kubiak. Cause
- 41:39Speaker 2: he's one of your guys.
- 41:40Speaker 3: I don't, but I thought, you know, he admitted after
- 41:42Speaker 3: the game that he didn't run the ball enough, which
- 41:45Speaker 3: I was shocked by. I know the score got a
- 41:47Speaker 3: little bit wonky in the second half. And that's always
- 41:49Speaker 3: tough when you're down multiple touchdowns to stick to the
- 41:52Speaker 3: run game. But we said it off the open that
- 41:55Speaker 3: a script, like, do the Seattle super bowl game plan, right?
- 41:59Speaker 1: Like run the football, test the edges.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Mike Washington, who I thought looked pretty good, you know,
- 42:04Speaker 3: preparing for the game, touch the ball one time. I
- 42:07Speaker 3: think in this game, you know, gently is clearly limited.
- 42:11Speaker 3: I think by that ankle injury, I was shocked by
- 42:13Speaker 3: how little they ran the ball. I was shocked by
- 42:16Speaker 3: how little they, you know, stress the edges of the
- 42:18Speaker 3: Patriots defense. And I was also shocked by the fact
- 42:21Speaker 3: that I said earlier with the cover zeros, like they
- 42:23Speaker 3: just had no plan for that. Like they, they just
- 42:25Speaker 3: really had no plan for that. But I think the
- 42:27Speaker 3: biggest thing out of all of the things I could
- 42:29Speaker 3: criticize the Raiders coaching staff for, you can not, give
- 42:33Speaker 3: drake may one-on-ones outside the numbers you just can't do
- 42:37Speaker 3: that they played a ton of single high like they
- 42:39Speaker 3: played 55 single high but even the quarter structures that
- 42:43Speaker 3: they were playing it ends up being one-on-one on the
- 42:46Speaker 3: outside down the field right like those corners that are
- 42:49Speaker 3: playing the deep fourth are not they don't have help
- 42:51Speaker 3: over the top of them it's not a cloud coverage
- 42:54Speaker 3: like cover two So, like, the fact that they just
- 42:57Speaker 3: played as much single high and they let Drake May
- 43:01Speaker 3: just throw ISO goal balls to those outside corners, that's
- 43:05Speaker 3: exactly what he wants to do. Like, that is his
- 43:07Speaker 3: bread and butter. If you're going to let him do that,
- 43:10Speaker 3: he's going to put up 400 yards and five touchdowns. Like,
- 43:13Speaker 3: that's just... You're going to get absolutely torched. And I
- 43:16Speaker 3: just can't believe how often they did that. Now I'm
- 43:19Speaker 3: not going, like, I don't want to lead with that, right?
- 43:21Speaker 3: Like this is a 45 minutes into the show thing.
- 43:23Speaker 3: Cause Drake may was just great in this game regardless,
- 43:26Speaker 3: but the book on Drake may, when he doesn't play
- 43:30Speaker 3: well and when he struggles. is to open the middle
- 43:33Speaker 3: of the field, cloud the field, put the safeties over
- 43:36Speaker 3: the top, and make him beat you between the numbers.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Make him read out zone him in the middle of
- 43:41Speaker 3: the field and thread the ball between the numbers. That's
- 43:44Speaker 3: where he's struggled. That's where he's had problems. And the
- 43:47Speaker 3: Raiders were like, nope, we're just going to let you
- 43:50Speaker 3: bombs away here all day long and we'll be fine.
- 43:53Speaker 3: And they were not fine. I just couldn't believe the
- 43:56Speaker 3: plan by the Raiders.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it was surprising.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Injuries.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Never a good thing on the bads. Two big ones
- 44:06Speaker 3: again this week. Will Campbell, Travion Henderson. I read at
- 44:10Speaker 3: the top of the show about Travion Henderson. Sounds like
- 44:12Speaker 3: a high ankle sprain. He's going to miss some time.
- 44:15Speaker 3: It sounds like a knee sprain. Something may be similar
- 44:17Speaker 3: for Will Campbell to last year. So he's going to
- 44:19Speaker 3: miss some time. You feel better seeing the 49 snaps
- 44:23Speaker 3: from Lomu and that he was solid at left tackle.
- 44:27Speaker 3: Running back now feels pretty thin. Like you have Len
- 44:29Speaker 3: Larrison on the practice squad. We have Corey Kiner, who
- 44:33Speaker 3: unfortunately is the one person that found himself on the
- 44:35Speaker 3: stuff that gets.
- 44:36Speaker 1: You beat this week. So, you know.
- 44:40Speaker 3: Is it kinder as running back to, they wrote, worked
- 44:42Speaker 3: out Jamal Williams, uh, early last week, but that's not
- 44:46Speaker 3: the type of back he is. You know, he's not
- 44:48Speaker 3: a Travion Henderson style back. He's a remandre replacement. So, uh,
- 44:52Speaker 3: what do they do here at running back moving forward?
- 44:54Speaker 3: Cause I think we can all assume that they're going
- 44:56Speaker 3: to have low move play left tackle. So that's kind
- 44:58Speaker 3: of an easy one, but, uh, what about running back?
- 45:00Speaker 3: What do you do here moving forward?
- 45:02Speaker 4: Well, it just, what's interesting in general to expand beyond
- 45:06Speaker 4: that is they're now in a spot where, uh, So
- 45:10Speaker 4: each team in the regular season gets eight players that.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Can return from IR. You get two more if you make.
- 45:18Speaker 4: The playoffs, but they have 10 guys that are eligible
- 45:21Speaker 4: to return now. And that's not including Henderson or Campbell.
- 45:24Speaker 4: So they're going to have to start deciding, you know,
- 45:29Speaker 4: some of the guys on IR maybe just aren't coming back.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Maybe some guys who are going to miss about a
- 45:33Speaker 4: month don't go on IR so they don't have to
- 45:35Speaker 4: burn the spot to get them back. And like, you know,
- 45:38Speaker 4: with Campbell, They have a bunch of tackles on the roster.
- 45:41Speaker 4: I'm not saying you want any of these, all of
- 45:43Speaker 4: these guys to play a lot, but they have Lomu,
- 45:46Speaker 4: they have Crownover, Rouse can play tackle, Pryor can play tackle,
- 45:49Speaker 4: and they already have designated Bryant to return.
- 45:52Speaker 2: That's one of those eight spots.
- 45:54Speaker 4: So you can probably get by essentially eating a roster
- 46:00Speaker 4: spot on not putting Campbell on IR. At running back,
- 46:04Speaker 4: as you just mentioned, You know, you can get two
- 46:07Speaker 4: weeks of land layers in his elevation because he's already
- 46:09Speaker 4: been elevated once.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Stevenson and Kiner, that's it.
- 46:12Speaker 4: So if you want to open up a spot to
- 46:14Speaker 4: add another running back, are you going to IR somebody
- 46:17Speaker 4: knowing you might not get them back?
- 46:18Speaker 2: Are you just going to cut someone? So, you know,
- 46:21Speaker 2: to that point, what are they going to do at
- 46:23Speaker 2: running back?
- 46:24Speaker 4: Well, there's all this weird arithmetic they have to do
- 46:26Speaker 4: with injuries that makes it tougher to tell. If they
- 46:28Speaker 4: didn't have all these injuries, they'd just put Travion Henderson
- 46:31Speaker 4: on IR, which you usually do for high ankle sprains.
- 46:34Speaker 4: and sign Larrison or somebody else.
- 46:35Speaker 2: And there you go.
- 46:36Speaker 8: Right.
- 46:36Speaker 4: It might not be that simple because if you put
- 46:39Speaker 4: Henderson on planning to bring him back, that's two.
- 46:43Speaker 2: AJ Brown is.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Let me, let me read the list.
- 46:48Speaker 3: I tweeted it out on Saturday after they put Hollins
- 46:51Speaker 3: and Gilliam on IR. So Hollins, Gilliam, AJ Brown, Mike
- 46:56Speaker 3: on when who Dell Pettis, Bryce Beringer, Marcus Bryant, Greg
- 47:00Speaker 3: Van Roen, Xavier Hutchins, Khalil Jacobs. Those are the 10
- 47:03Speaker 3: guys as of right now that are eligible to return
- 47:06Speaker 3: off injured reserve this season. Uh, if they put Henderson
- 47:10Speaker 3: and Campbell on IR, then that brings 10 to 12, right?
- 47:13Speaker 1: Like you said, right.
- 47:14Speaker 3: So they have seven more spots. Now, Hollins, Gilliam, AJ Brown.
- 47:19Speaker 3: are absolute locks to come back if they're healthy, right?
- 47:22Speaker 3: Like I, I think that that that's without question. And
- 47:25Speaker 3: obviously Henderson and Campbell would be as well. So that's five.
- 47:28Speaker 3: If they have to do that, Mike on when it
- 47:30Speaker 3: would be, I I'm not optimistic that Mike on when
- 47:33Speaker 3: he was coming back this season.
- 47:34Speaker 1: I think that that.
- 47:35Speaker 2: Maybe he's one of those ones you save. If you
- 47:37Speaker 2: get the extra playoff spots, correct.
- 47:39Speaker 3: Now, no disrespect intended, but Del Pettis, Bryce Beringer, Marcus Bryant,
- 47:46Speaker 3: Greg Van Roe and Xavier Hutchins, Khalil Jacobs, they're, you
- 47:49Speaker 3: don't necessarily need to panic about not bringing those guys
- 47:52Speaker 3: back this year.
- 47:53Speaker 8: Right?
- 47:53Speaker 3: Like I think all five of those are six of
- 47:55Speaker 3: those guys are kind of on the fence there. So
- 47:58Speaker 3: it's really Holland's Gilliam Brown. Cause I'm not going to
- 48:02Speaker 3: count on when you, cause I, I just don't see
- 48:04Speaker 3: that happening.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Brian, do you want to bring Brian back?
- 48:08Speaker 2: You already think, doesn't he count as one? Cause they
- 48:10Speaker 2: designated him.
- 48:11Speaker 1: He does. So it might as well. Right. If you
- 48:14Speaker 1: have the open roster spot, you already use the spot,
- 48:16Speaker 1: use it.
- 48:17Speaker 6: Yep.
- 48:17Speaker 1: So that, that would be with Campbell hurt. So that's four.
- 48:21Speaker 3: And then if you do Henderson and you do Campbell,
- 48:24Speaker 3: then now you're up to six. You are starting to
- 48:27Speaker 3: get up there a little bit in terms of the
- 48:29Speaker 3: numbers here. Now you mentioned that. I think it is
- 48:31Speaker 3: important to mention the two extra, if you make the playoffs.
- 48:33Speaker 3: So it's, you know, obviously I'm not putting a cart
- 48:36Speaker 3: before a horse and saying the Patriots are definitely going
- 48:38Speaker 3: to the playoffs at three and two. But if you,
- 48:41Speaker 3: if you just think about it, like, okay, you know,
- 48:43Speaker 3: these guys are probably not going to be healthy enough
- 48:46Speaker 3: to come back right in the regular season, like a
- 48:49Speaker 3: Mike on when you, you know, may, can he come
- 48:51Speaker 3: back in January? You know, you kind of save a
- 48:54Speaker 3: spot there, but you're the numbers are, you're, they're starting
- 48:57Speaker 3: to add up. They're starting to add.
- 48:58Speaker 4: No, it's, it's going to impact the way this roster
- 49:01Speaker 4: is managed the rest of the year. It's going to
- 49:02Speaker 4: be something we talk about for the rest of the year,
- 49:04Speaker 4: which is why I wanted to bring it up and get.
- 49:05Speaker 6: Ahead of it. Yeah.
- 49:06Speaker 4: And then how, how many times do we get the
- 49:09Speaker 4: questions and it's plural. If a player misses three weeks
- 49:12Speaker 4: without going on, I are my mentions fill up with
- 49:16Speaker 4: why didn't they put them on?
- 49:17Speaker 2: Ir why didn't they just put them on ir right
- 49:18Speaker 2: like this is probably going to be there's probably some guys.
- 49:22Speaker 4: That aren't going to go on ir that are going
- 49:23Speaker 4: to miss four plus games this is why yeah because
- 49:27Speaker 4: they don't they're not going to have the niners are
- 49:29Speaker 4: i think the niners are doing this in like week
- 49:30Speaker 4: two they stopped putting guys on ir because they have
- 49:33Speaker 4: enough spots unless somebody's truly out for the year so
- 49:36Speaker 4: it's again, it's just something that is going to be
- 49:38Speaker 4: a part of the way this roster is managed the
- 49:40Speaker 4: rest of the year. There's no way around it. And
- 49:42Speaker 4: it's going to be something that we kind of track.
- 49:43Speaker 4: And this Henderson one is a great example because high
- 49:46Speaker 4: ankle sprain, that's, that's right on the bubble there. You know,
- 49:49Speaker 4: that's four to six weeks and you'd like to put
- 49:52Speaker 4: that guy on IR, but he's going to be back.
- 49:55Speaker 4: And can you just eat that roster spot? But you're
- 49:58Speaker 4: also doing that with Campbell. You know, we'll see how
- 50:00Speaker 4: long Gonzalez and Davis are out. Those are other spots
- 50:03Speaker 4: where you're doing it, where those guys are probably going.
- 50:05Speaker 2: To be back. So you don't want to put them
- 50:06Speaker 2: on IR. It's going to get thin real quick.
- 50:11Speaker 6: Yep.
- 50:12Speaker 1: All right.
- 50:12Speaker 3: We'll talk more about the injuries on Thursday once we
- 50:15Speaker 3: see practice on Wednesday and we can unpack those a
- 50:18Speaker 3: little bit more. Last point here for me on the
- 50:21Speaker 3: stuff that gets you beat. This is a kinder fumble.
- 50:23Speaker 3: You just can't have it in your own territory like
- 50:26Speaker 3: that and set up a scoring opportunity there for the Raiders.
- 50:31Speaker 3: I actually thought that he ran pretty well in this
- 50:33Speaker 3: game and on the run that he fumbled on, he
- 50:36Speaker 3: made the linebacker missing the hole and then just didn't
- 50:39Speaker 3: protect the football on his way through the line of
- 50:41Speaker 3: scrimmage and got it punched out. I actually, I was
- 50:45Speaker 3: cautiously optimistic about the way he ran in this game.
- 50:49Speaker 3: He just, you need better ball security in that situation.
- 50:51Speaker 3: But yeah, it was funny because he made Eichenberg miss
- 50:54Speaker 3: and then he fumbled, you know, like it was actually
- 50:56Speaker 3: a pretty nice run to avoid a, you know, a
- 51:00Speaker 3: no gain or a tackle for loss there. I, you,
- 51:02Speaker 3: you mentioned to me after the game on Sunday that
- 51:04Speaker 3: you had the penalties on, on your bags, stuff that
- 51:08Speaker 3: gets you beat.
- 51:09Speaker 1: But my goodness was that crew flag happy.
- 51:12Speaker 4: So that crew was not great, but you got like
- 51:14Speaker 4: false starts at home. You can't be having that. And
- 51:17Speaker 4: you know, 12 penalties is their most in a game
- 51:21Speaker 4: this year. 116 penalty yards is their most in a
- 51:24Speaker 4: game in 10 years since 2016.
- 51:27Speaker 2: That's not all on the crew. Don't get me wrong.
- 51:28Speaker 4: That crew drove me nuts, but I, there, there are,
- 51:32Speaker 4: and Vrabel said it after the game, like there's definitely
- 51:34Speaker 4: things penalty wise. Cause they had some potentially costly penalties
- 51:37Speaker 4: last week too. The sheer number wasn't as high, but
- 51:40Speaker 4: the timing wasn't great. So, you know, they're now one
- 51:43Speaker 4: of the 10 most penalized teams in the NFL. Obviously
- 51:45Speaker 4: that game doesn't help, but right. Just something on the radar.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Like you, you don't want to be one of the
- 51:50Speaker 2: 10 most penalized teams in the NFL. You just don't.
- 51:52Speaker 1: You don't. But that crew, that was a rough watch.
- 51:56Speaker 2: That was not great.
- 51:58Speaker 3: And it wasn't so much, like, I saw it when,
- 52:01Speaker 3: you know, watching it back, you could see the infractions
- 52:03Speaker 3: that they're calling. They were just so ticky-tack that it
- 52:06Speaker 3: was just, it was too many flags.
- 52:08Speaker 1: There was just too many flags.
- 52:09Speaker 2: They say you can call holding. this ain't got holding on.
- 52:11Speaker 4: Any play in the NFL and the Craig roll stats.
- 52:14Speaker 8: Right.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 52:15Speaker 3: And sometimes, you know what, like we just want to
- 52:17Speaker 3: watch football and we don't want to watch, you know,
- 52:19Speaker 3: the flags all over the field, the, the intentional grounding
- 52:23Speaker 3: on Drake may, uh, that, that was like, they deemed
- 52:27Speaker 3: that remanded Stevenson and Hunter Henry, like it wasn't going
- 52:30Speaker 3: to be a catchable situation. Like they basically like, uh, intent, right?
- 52:37Speaker 3: Like that drink, which I don't think is really how
- 52:39Speaker 3: the rule is supposed to go.
- 52:41Speaker 4: Well, so David Andrews brought this up on our show
- 52:43Speaker 4: yesterday that there was a similar call, I think, in
- 52:46Speaker 4: the Seahawks Niners game where, and I mean, we used
- 52:50Speaker 4: to see Tom Brady do this all the time. James
- 52:52Speaker 4: White is blocking or Gronk's blocking, just throws it his back, right?
- 52:55Speaker 4: His feet, his ankles, heels is the word I'm looking for.
- 52:59Speaker 2: That's never been grounding.
- 53:01Speaker 4: Was there some sort of point of emphasis maybe that
- 53:04Speaker 4: we missed that Like, it has to be a receiver now.
- 53:07Speaker 4: And if the player's engaged in a block, he doesn't
- 53:09Speaker 4: count as a receiver in the area. I actually wouldn't
- 53:12Speaker 4: hate it.
- 53:12Speaker 2: If that's the rule.
- 53:14Speaker 4: There's so many rules that favor the offense and make
- 53:16Speaker 4: life easier for the offense. If they wanted to say no,
- 53:19Speaker 4: like if you're throwing to an intended receiver, it has
- 53:20Speaker 4: to be a guy that's like in the pattern.
- 53:22Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:23Speaker 2: I'd be all for that.
- 53:25Speaker 7: I just.
- 53:26Speaker 2: if they made the change, I would have liked to
- 53:27Speaker 2: hear it before they did.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I, that's exactly my view on it.
- 53:30Speaker 3: And then we got to wrap it up is just like,
- 53:32Speaker 3: I've never seen it that matter before. I, it should
- 53:36Speaker 3: like it by just like the spirit of the rule
- 53:41Speaker 3: that would be intentional grounding, right? Like he was definitely
- 53:44Speaker 3: not completing a pass to remand Ray Stevenson or Hunter
- 53:47Speaker 3: Henry in that situation. If you're inside the tackle box
- 53:50Speaker 3: and those guys are not like deemed to be receivers
- 53:54Speaker 3: that could actually make a play on the ball, then
- 53:57Speaker 3: they can call intentional grounding. They just, I just have
- 54:00Speaker 3: never seen that called as closely as that before.
- 54:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 54:03Speaker 3: And obviously coming off the heels of the Josh Allen one,
- 54:06Speaker 3: the week before it all, everybody's up in arms and
- 54:09Speaker 3: Patriot land about that. I got to say, that was,
- 54:12Speaker 3: I think, the best pacing we've ever done on the
- 54:15Speaker 3: show since we got to this new format.
- 54:16Speaker 2: I'll stay home more often, I guess.
- 54:18Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe we didn't argue as much because you're not
- 54:20Speaker 3: in the building. Maybe that's what it is. We'll be
- 54:23Speaker 3: back on Thursday. We'll talk a lot more about the
- 54:25Speaker 3: injuries once we get out to practice and get the
- 54:27Speaker 3: first participation report. of the week tomorrow and get a
- 54:30Speaker 3: little bit more information, hopefully on where the Patriots stand
- 54:34Speaker 3: on injuries.
- 54:35Speaker 1: But until then, Alex, thanks for putting up with this.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Appreciate it. Thanks for fighting through and we'll see you
- 54:40Speaker 1: guys Thursday. Hey, this is deuce. Thanks for tuning into
- 54:47Speaker 1: the show.
- 54:47Speaker 3: If you really want to help us, make sure you

- 54:54Speaker 8: Patriots YouTube channel to see this show and.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Everything else that we do here at the Patriots. Thanks
- 54:58Speaker 1: a lot.
