- 1:11Speaker 5: How weird is that?
- 1:12Speaker 7: It is weird?
- 1:12Speaker 3: I literally know. The first time I heard him was
- 1:14Speaker 3: Florantine played him. Yes, he played Pretty Little Lie.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Well, Florentine turned me onto the band.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Then they started coming in, uh to my serious XM show, right,
- 1:22Speaker 4: and then I got a message they want to be
- 1:24Speaker 4: on my podcast.
- 1:25Speaker 3: So and you're like a super fan. Now that is
- 1:28Speaker 3: so weird.
- 1:28Speaker 4: I'm all the way from Texas just to see him
- 1:30Speaker 4: in New York City?
- 1:32Speaker 3: How good is fine to light?
- 1:33Speaker 5: Oh it's awesome.

- 1:45Speaker 4: Carl Carls, We're supposed to do the podcast with me today,
- 1:49Speaker 4: but his fox broke down and he's really really bumped.
- 1:53Speaker 3: He's not here. I literally turned on my podcast around
- 1:55Speaker 3: the corner. I turned the corner and I run into
- 1:57Speaker 3: you guys. Awesome, Yeah, I'll see it. The show man.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I'm wearing my Crispy Cooan donuts.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Isn't it a cool hat? Carl gave it to me
- 2:07Speaker 3: when we did our road trip to Rochester. So what's
- 2:09Speaker 3: your name? Man? Steven? Steven? And yours Cindy, Hey, Cindy,
- 2:12Speaker 3: what's up? Man? Cool? Yeah, I'm gonna interview the band
- 2:15Speaker 3: for at a little bit and then I'm going to
- 2:17Speaker 3: the show tonight.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Awesome.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah, well, pleasure to meet you too, you too, man,
- 2:21Speaker 3: All right, nice to meet you. Oh, thank you? All
- 2:24Speaker 3: right on, I appreciate that. How weird is that it's up?
- 2:27Speaker 3: Robert from Westwood One?
- 2:29Speaker 2: Or are you you just ran into fans?
- 2:31Speaker 3: I turned on the podcast. I'm not even joking, like
- 2:34Speaker 3: fifteen seconds earlier.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And a little town there from They said they're from
- 2:38Speaker 2: San Angelo, Texas. It's known for an air base and
- 2:42Speaker 2: college and pharmaceuticals and that's it. My brother used to
- 2:45Speaker 2: living there. There's like a thousand people in the whole town.
- 2:48Speaker 8: You know that.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I know that I've been there. There's a bar, right.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I gotta say, Joey's gonna kill me, but I had
- 2:55Speaker 4: the zoom in my pocket, and look the volume is
- 2:57Speaker 4: way down.
- 2:58Speaker 3: So Joey, I'm turning up the volume right down. You
- 3:01Speaker 3: figure this out.
- 3:02Speaker 1: No, worry. He's got you covered. I don't think anyone
- 3:04Speaker 1: even noticed break a leg with that big interview.
- 3:07Speaker 3: All right, now we're at proper volume. So they're from
- 3:10Speaker 3: the same town as your.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Brother, Well he lived there for a while. Yeah, that's
- 3:13Speaker 2: so cool.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Man, is the band ready or what? Yeah? Ready to go?
- 3:16Speaker 3: All right, and Mike you what's going on? All right?
- 3:19Speaker 3: I'm looking forward to this. Where's Tim? Save you?
- 3:21Speaker 2: Tim's on a train back to Philly.
- 3:23Speaker 4: He said, I'll absolutely be get every plaza he wanted
- 3:26Speaker 4: to hang out.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all came up and he's you know, there's always.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Something coming up with that guy.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Everyone canceled on me today. Vic Kenley's with Ron White.
- 3:35Speaker 3: He jumped on a plane this morning.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Sharad is going to Rachel Feinstein's wedding this weekend. H
- 3:41Speaker 4: Carl called me less mine and his fox broke down,
- 3:44Speaker 4: so he has to get his car fixed. So it's
- 3:46Speaker 4: just me today, man, And I was hoping that Tim
- 3:48Speaker 4: was gonna help me out.
- 3:49Speaker 3: With the interview.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Well you know sure, I mean.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Do you know anything about Blackbirds?
- 3:54Speaker 9: Moke?
- 3:54Speaker 2: I partied with them before where in Atlanta?
- 3:57Speaker 5: Oh?
- 3:57Speaker 10: Really?
- 3:58Speaker 2: And they're fine. I remember most of kind of some
- 4:01Speaker 2: of it. Yeah, but they're no, they're a great band.
- 4:04Speaker 2: And they they've been on Colbert a couple of times.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I mean it's you know, he's one of the these
- 4:08Speaker 2: working they're working Southern band that is, you know, just
- 4:11Speaker 2: on that they're like right there. Yeah, I think they're
- 4:14Speaker 2: better than Black Crows at the end of their run.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Damn.
- 4:17Speaker 3: And I love the Black Crows.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Too, And I've seen them one hundred and fifty now
- 4:20Speaker 2: one hundred times. Yeah, you've seen the Black Crows one
- 4:22Speaker 2: hundred times, Allen Brothers one hundred and fifty one, Black
- 4:24Speaker 2: Crows one hundred times.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I didn't know that.
- 4:27Speaker 2: That's when you worked in rock radio. That's what you did.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You went the shows.
- 4:30Speaker 8: That's a lot of shows though.
- 4:31Speaker 3: What's your favorite black uh black Crow?
- 4:34Speaker 4: Saw?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Black Crows?
- 4:36Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 4:38Speaker 3: Really, yeah, you want to know mine?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yes, bad Moon Creeping there you go.
- 4:43Speaker 8: How cool is that?
- 4:44Speaker 6: That?
- 4:44Speaker 4: Saw?
- 4:45Speaker 2: Chris Robinson Brotherhood's pretty good. I've seen them a bunch
- 4:48Speaker 2: of times.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's too bad they don't get along.
- 4:51Speaker 8: Yeah, they hate each other.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Well, look, the Kings are going to get back together
- 4:54Speaker 2: after fifty years of fighting, so you know, maybe this hope.
- 4:57Speaker 3: For the black for them at that it's pathetic.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Well, I think Rich Robinson is the problem. I think
- 5:03Speaker 3: he's wound too tight.
- 5:05Speaker 4: And I've talked to both of those guys and they're
- 5:07Speaker 4: both really cool. But I think Chris is too mellow and.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Riches Chris is a prophet this, This is no doubt
- 5:13Speaker 2: about it. Chris just sees things on a whole other level.
- 5:15Speaker 2: He he does.
- 5:17Speaker 3: And then Rich is just you know, he's wound.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Too tights the business guy.
- 5:20Speaker 3: But that's why that band worked.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Yeah, you had the free spirit and then you had
- 5:24Speaker 4: Rich probably taking a little more serious than Chris did.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Seeing Gorman did it right, moved to Nashville, does sports
- 5:30Speaker 2: radio and drums a little bit. Yeah.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Yeah, j Moore try to turn me out to Yeah,
- 5:34Speaker 4: he he hooked us both up, but it just never
- 5:37Speaker 4: worked out.
- 5:38Speaker 3: But I like Steve as well.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, where are we doing this on the stage?
- 5:43Speaker 3: No stage's too loud on there in the dressing room,
- 5:45Speaker 3: in their dressing room. So we got the whole band
- 5:48Speaker 3: to whoever you want still coming. Well, I mean, getting
- 5:52Speaker 3: back to your point. That's why I like about these guys.
- 5:54Speaker 3: They're really really down to earth.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Very accessible and it's just good. It's just good music.
- 5:59Speaker 2: There's the other way to it's a lot of singalong songs.
- 6:01Speaker 4: So yeah, but I don't think they like the label
- 6:03Speaker 4: that they're the new kings of Southern rock.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I don't like that, man, because they're they're bigger than
- 6:09Speaker 3: just being pushed into one genre.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Like oh sure, yeah, although you know they saw them
- 6:13Speaker 2: in a country bar. That's where I saw sure.
- 6:15Speaker 4: But they also got some blues to them, some pop, so.
- 6:20Speaker 11: I don't know.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Dare I say a little metal at times? A little
- 6:23Speaker 3: bit yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Little disco vibe, believe you me from the last album,
- 6:30Speaker 4: So I mean they're always mixing up.
- 6:32Speaker 3: That's where I like the bottom two. They didn't settle
- 6:34Speaker 3: into just yeah of course.
- 6:36Speaker 5: All right, let's go.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Let's get inside. We should bring him in, man, can we?
- 6:42Speaker 3: That's what you can we? You want to come in
- 6:46Speaker 3: and meet the band?
- 6:47Speaker 5: How quilt that would you look at?
- 6:49Speaker 6: You?
- 6:49Speaker 2: Connecting people making dreams happen?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Tell them I can only take two.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It's the Opie Wish Foundation.
- 6:56Speaker 4: You want to come in and yeah, you're with us,
- 6:59Speaker 4: you're with the band, you with the podcast, I could
- 7:01Speaker 4: bring like you and somebody else.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Yeah, let's go bring you.
- 7:05Speaker 4: You can help me with the interview, because, like you said,
- 7:07Speaker 4: I lost Carl today.
- 7:09Speaker 5: You're the new car.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I'm not gonna be as entertaining as a car.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Who cares where.
- 7:13Speaker 4: You're a super fan of BlackBerry smoke. This would be
- 7:15Speaker 4: cool dragging this guy in. He's a fan of my podcast. Uhh,
- 7:22Speaker 4: she just said one.
- 7:23Speaker 12: Moment, he'll be Okay, we got to get to the
- 7:27Speaker 12: Uh you remember Florentine played that song before he ever
- 7:32Speaker 12: announced what was going on with his wife.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Yeah, wait, which song? Pretty Little Lie, Pretty Little Lie?
- 7:38Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, don't listen to the words flarantine.
- 7:42Speaker 4: I'm gonna talk to Florentine really soon on the podcast,
- 7:44Speaker 4: and we're.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Gonna talk about shamans.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, Florentine saw a shaman and so did I.
- 7:50Speaker 9: So yeah, you more than once.
- 7:53Speaker 4: I think he probably saw his shaman a few more
- 7:55Speaker 4: times today.
- 7:56Speaker 2: And he just didn't reveal it.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yeah, he was texting me today. Wait, because I told
- 8:00Speaker 3: my I saw shaman too. Let me just look this
- 8:03Speaker 3: up real fast.
- 8:04Speaker 4: And I was talking to Florentine about hey man of
- 8:06Speaker 4: sa shaman and he goes.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Nice, was it my guy named Gypsy? Did you ever
- 8:11Speaker 3: take a drug?
- 8:12Speaker 5: Test Well.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I snorted something some kind of Peruvian plant dust fan. Alright,
- 8:23Speaker 4: So and man, did that set my world on fire?
- 8:26Speaker 4: What are we waiting for, Mike? We're now in a lobby.
- 8:28Speaker 14: Yeah, Trays coming down to get.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Us, Trades coming down to get us, all right?

- 17:01Speaker 4: a sound and said this is what we're gonna be now,
- 17:03Speaker 4: and instead you're like, no, man, let's continue to experiment
- 17:05Speaker 4: and change it up a little bit.
- 17:07Speaker 9: You know, we'll leave that to Nickelback.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Sorry, Well, you're always trying to well, but there are
- 17:17Speaker 4: bands they find a sound and it's they find a
- 17:19Speaker 4: little success with that and then they're like, all right,
- 17:21Speaker 4: this is what we're gonna do for the next twenty years,
- 17:22Speaker 4: and you guys are.
- 17:23Speaker 9: Formula rather upset our core audience, you know. And the
- 17:27Speaker 9: only band that I can think of that has well
- 17:31Speaker 9: maybe two that have completely done that and they're still
- 17:34Speaker 9: they're not laughable or make fun of able as a
- 17:38Speaker 9: CDC and Motorhead.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Oh well, there you go. But it works for those guys. Yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 4: no complaints there. But led Zeppelin, well they changed it
- 17:46Speaker 4: up a little bit, don't you think they were all like, yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 4: they were all over the place.
- 17:49Speaker 23: I thought I thought that we were back at the
- 17:51Speaker 23: people that change every record.
- 17:54Speaker 9: You lost it already lost it, well changed for the podcast.
- 17:58Speaker 2: I thought it was over.
- 18:03Speaker 4: And the other thing I was reading up on you
- 18:06Speaker 4: guys a little bit because it's been a bit since
- 18:07Speaker 4: I've seen you, and was a rolling stone that labeled
- 18:11Speaker 4: you guys the new.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Kings of Southern rock. Oh you guys did that?
- 18:16Speaker 9: I think that that gets thrown around a lot. Yeah,
- 18:19Speaker 9: you know, and you know, we never set out to
- 18:22Speaker 9: be that. So it's or carry a torch if you will,
- 18:26Speaker 9: a lot of people say that, But I mean we
- 18:28Speaker 9: simply just were five guys making music, right. It just
- 18:32Speaker 9: sounds the way it sounds.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Well, the reason I brought that up is I thought
- 18:35Speaker 4: that wasn't fair either. See, I'm your biggest defender out there,
- 18:38Speaker 4: because I don't think you could put BlackBerry Smoke into
- 18:41Speaker 4: one into one genre like that, you know.
- 18:44Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean people will say that, they will say
- 18:47Speaker 9: next Leonard Skynyrd or next saying next anything is that's
- 18:51Speaker 9: not good.
- 18:52Speaker 3: No, I don't think.
- 18:53Speaker 9: Well, we're in this to be to be ourselves, right,
- 18:57Speaker 9: not the next anybody.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Well, you hear the influences.
- 18:59Speaker 4: You hear Leonard Skinner and your music a little bit
- 19:01Speaker 4: of course, and the Almond Brothers and the band, and
- 19:04Speaker 4: we could go on and on. But then, you know,
- 19:06Speaker 4: true artists like yourselves, you take your influences and then
- 19:09Speaker 4: you make you make your own thing. Yeah, and that's
- 19:12Speaker 4: what I hear when I listened to BlackBerry Smokes.
- 19:14Speaker 9: Yeah, and you know that's what they did. Like if
- 19:16Speaker 9: you talk to Gary Rossington, he'll say, man, we love
- 19:18Speaker 9: the Beatles and the Stones and Free and Cream and
- 19:21Speaker 9: Humble Pie and bands like that, and they were doing
- 19:25Speaker 9: kind of that same kind of thing, but it had
- 19:27Speaker 9: a Florida accent.
- 19:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:29Speaker 3: So yeah, because I think the Almond Brothers.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Weren't they labeled a southern rock band for a while, yeah,
- 19:33Speaker 4: although we all know them as more of a blues band.
- 19:36Speaker 9: Right yeah, I mean they were just a melting pot
- 19:38Speaker 9: and blues and jazz and country and right.
- 19:40Speaker 4: You know, what's the one influence that people would not guess,
- 19:44Speaker 4: like one band that you're you were influenced by that
- 19:48Speaker 4: people would be like shocked by. And anyone could answer
- 19:50Speaker 4: this question and yeah the band Plae.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Yes, yes for real?
- 19:54Speaker 9: Yeah, no, why yes, it's better than no.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Say that again.
- 20:02Speaker 14: Someone brought us records when we were kids and we.
- 20:04Speaker 5: Liked it, right.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:06Speaker 4: I remember seeing Yes way way back literally twenty five
- 20:11Speaker 4: years ago in Buffalo, New York at John Anderson. Back
- 20:13Speaker 4: then he was into, uh setting up a tent on
- 20:16Speaker 4: the stage and sleeping at the venue.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And I thought that was the coolest.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Thing ever could. I mean, it makes sense.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Yeah, the hotels suck after a while, right, But I
- 20:26Speaker 4: mean he's a little bit on the spiritual side, and
- 20:28Speaker 4: here he is, you know, spending the night in the
- 20:30Speaker 4: venue pretty.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Much by himself on the stage. He's going to perform
- 20:33Speaker 3: in the next day. Wow.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Yeah, they won't even let us here before five o'clock,
- 20:42Speaker 4: I was speaking of Skinner. Did you guys see the
- 20:44Speaker 4: documentary we did? How great was that documentary?
- 20:48Speaker 9: Fantastic?
- 20:49Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 20:49Speaker 9: What a story? I mean, I was just talking about
- 20:52Speaker 9: this earlier today. We were that you know, you everyone's
- 20:56Speaker 9: heard that story now tons of times from from different
- 21:00Speaker 9: But it seems like with each book or documentary you
- 21:03Speaker 9: pick up a little something new each time.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Right what I learned about I didn't realize that shed
- 21:08Speaker 4: that the you know rolls, yeah, the hell House, thank you.
- 21:12Speaker 4: I didn't realize what a shithold that place was where
- 21:14Speaker 4: all that great music came from.
- 21:16Speaker 9: Right there on the right on the river, on the
- 21:19Speaker 9: river and gators and.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Yeah, spiders and no ac and uh yeah getting.
- 21:24Speaker 9: I love the fact that they said that they would
- 21:26Speaker 9: go out in that pasture and find mushrooms. They would
- 21:30Speaker 9: trip on shrooms.
- 21:30Speaker 3: All day while they were How cool was that? And
- 21:32Speaker 3: then everyone and then everyone knew it.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Was skinnered that you know, had that shed what was
- 21:37Speaker 4: it called again? Hell hell house?
- 21:39Speaker 3: Thank you?
- 21:40Speaker 4: And they were still breaking into it and stealing all
- 21:42Speaker 4: their equipment and just making it, you know, really tough.
- 21:44Speaker 4: But don't you think that's where the creativity comes when
- 21:47Speaker 4: you guys are in a situation like that, the pressure
- 21:51Speaker 4: to perform and create.
- 21:53Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, well, just doing this for eighteen to
- 21:57Speaker 9: twenty years, you know, it's like, okay, well we know
- 22:00Speaker 9: we're not going to stop, so you know we we
- 22:03Speaker 9: unfortunately don't have a hell house, right unless you consider
- 22:07Speaker 9: your house with with with with young with young babies crying.
- 22:11Speaker 23: And actually our bus fills up with gas fumes sometimes
- 22:15Speaker 23: when the driver prompts that's hell.
- 22:17Speaker 2: But we find it kind of pleasant.
- 22:19Speaker 14: And that's a lot of pressure.
- 22:20Speaker 9: It's kind of like mushrooms.
- 22:22Speaker 3: You got diesel? Do you have the no ship roll
- 22:25Speaker 3: on the bus?
- 22:26Speaker 9: Of course? Why you know, I heard a rumor.
- 22:30Speaker 14: I mean you got in your pants. Okay, then it's
- 22:33Speaker 14: it's that small.
- 22:34Speaker 4: In there, right the last wait, get them on mic there.
- 22:43Speaker 9: The last time we were here, uh well, one of
- 22:47Speaker 9: the last few times. We were in New York City
- 22:49Speaker 9: when we left, and then apparently Keith Urban was at
- 22:52Speaker 9: Webster Hall and didn't it wasn't there an accident with
- 22:55Speaker 9: his bus with it because some busses have a grinder,
- 22:58Speaker 9: a toilet grind. You heard about you can't ship in right, Oh,
- 23:02Speaker 9: well that's the fridge.
- 23:04Speaker 4: But that's the famous story the Dave Matthew. They got
- 23:07Speaker 4: a lot of trouble. They dumped their U there.
- 23:09Speaker 18: I heard that.
- 23:10Speaker 9: I heard that the street in front of Webster Hall
- 23:13Speaker 9: was flowing brown. Thanks, Keith.
- 23:17Speaker 14: I mean, I'll tell you Keith, Urban's healthy.
- 23:22Speaker 9: Yeah, I'll tell you what our people. What our bus
- 23:26Speaker 9: driver said, I said once. I mean, you know, you'll
- 23:30Speaker 9: be on a bus driving for miles and miles and
- 23:32Speaker 9: sometimes you know things are out of you know, the
- 23:35Speaker 9: situation will be beyond your control, and you'll think, I
- 23:37Speaker 9: really have to ship it's an emergency. Hey, bus driver,
- 23:40Speaker 9: can we stop at a rest area or a gas station?
- 23:42Speaker 9: And he'll and he told me, uh verbatim, he said,
- 23:46Speaker 9: I'll just go ahead and ship in there. Your old
- 23:47Speaker 9: little vegan turns won't do no damage.
- 23:55Speaker 3: And then there's the bad shame.
- 23:59Speaker 2: What's never done that?
- 23:59Speaker 3: But I heard about it?
- 24:00Speaker 8: Guilty of it?
- 24:01Speaker 3: Wait, what's the bag of shame?
- 24:02Speaker 24: Let's go when you're stranded on the highway and it's
- 24:06Speaker 24: like fifty miles to the next yeah placelet toilet, Yeah,
- 24:10Speaker 24: you just get Kroger bags or whatever.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yeah, the number.
- 24:17Speaker 8: Yea, they go for it tied up and throw it
- 24:21Speaker 8: out the window.
- 24:22Speaker 14: Now you put it in the trailer with the merchants.
- 24:25Speaker 24: I just kid eat, It'll.
- 24:29Speaker 14: Go right through a basket, right through it.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I can't.
- 24:32Speaker 4: I could ship the best croger bags I could, I
- 24:36Speaker 4: could ship anywhere, and I would throw the bag out
- 24:40Speaker 4: the window, no problem. You know, I would hope that
- 24:43Speaker 4: the highways a little empty, but I absolutely would do that.
- 24:46Speaker 4: One other thing, I want to go back to the
- 24:47Speaker 4: Lenard Skinner documentary. That last scene of that documentary made
- 24:51Speaker 4: me so happy and made me so sad.
- 24:53Speaker 3: At the same time.
- 24:54Speaker 4: If that if that makes sense, because you're looking at
- 24:56Speaker 4: a band. I think they were playing in front of
- 24:58Speaker 4: like one hundred thousand people for that final s and
- 25:00Speaker 4: it was it was pretty much one of the highlights
- 25:03Speaker 4: of their entire careers. And uh and they didn't know
- 25:06Speaker 4: that that at that moment, you know, that was that
- 25:09Speaker 4: was the pinnacle of their success. And then it just
- 25:11Speaker 4: shows that they're all gone, man, oh my goodness.
- 25:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:15Speaker 18: And it shows the pressures of travel that you would
- 25:17Speaker 18: get on a plane that might not be one hundred
- 25:20Speaker 18: percent right to the next place.
- 25:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that that damn rickety plane that everyone knew was
- 25:24Speaker 4: in bad shape. It's pretty amazing that more people survived
- 25:28Speaker 4: that thing.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Yeah right.
- 25:29Speaker 14: How many people do you know that survive a plane?
- 25:32Speaker 3: Not many, probably, I would say none.
- 25:35Speaker 23: Right, Yeah, So I mean, but to look at Gary
- 25:39Speaker 23: Rossington now and be like, this guy has lived through
- 25:42Speaker 23: so much, right, and he still nails it every night.
- 25:47Speaker 3: But yeah, you guys, you guys warmed up for Leonard Skinner.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Are they still on their fair World tour? Yes?
- 25:53Speaker 23: Absolutely, for the next two years.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Oh, they're doing a two year run.
- 25:56Speaker 23: They're not going to repeat a market, so they're going
- 25:59Speaker 23: to one.
- 26:00Speaker 14: I mean, the plan is to play everywhere.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Why do you think, why are why are they calling
- 26:05Speaker 3: it quits?
- 26:06Speaker 4: Because it's it seems like it's one of those bands
- 26:08Speaker 4: that you could kind of keep the spirit of the
- 26:10Speaker 4: band going long past obviously all the original members pretty.
- 26:14Speaker 9: Much for a long time now though with Gary being
- 26:16Speaker 9: the only he's the last one, right, and I mean
- 26:20Speaker 9: he's had some health scares, you know, over the years, right,
- 26:23Speaker 9: so I think it's just just time to probably him.
- 26:26Speaker 9: I don't know, but I would guess that he probably
- 26:28Speaker 9: is like, you know what, I'm gonna stay home now.
- 26:29Speaker 4: I would assume, you know, they do the farewell tour
- 26:32Speaker 4: for a couple of years, they settled down a little bit,
- 26:33Speaker 4: and then they bring it back as something else, kind
- 26:35Speaker 4: of like what the break is that?
- 26:37Speaker 25: Yeah, we kiss, just says kiss, come back and make
- 26:43Speaker 25: up kisses, like on their fifteenth anniversary farewell tour.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Something like that. God Gene. Have you guys ever had
- 26:53Speaker 3: a run in with Gene? No, I've had him on
- 26:56Speaker 3: the era over the years. What an asshole, Jesus Christy.
- 27:02Speaker 3: He's exhausting to deal with. Exhausting.
- 27:05Speaker 14: Yeah, it seems like it works for him.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it might.
- 27:08Speaker 4: But one of my greatest concert memories was Leonard Skinner.
- 27:12Speaker 4: I was in Western New York and it was when
- 27:15Speaker 4: they came back and I think nineteen eighty five, ten
- 27:17Speaker 4: years later, and they just kicked ass and then it
- 27:20Speaker 4: was time for free Bird. And I'm assuming they do
- 27:23Speaker 4: this to this day where all a sudden they're like, hey, man,
- 27:25Speaker 4: there's only one guy that could sing this song and
- 27:28Speaker 4: he's not with us anymore, And they put the hat
- 27:30Speaker 4: on the mic with the one spotlight and then it's
- 27:32Speaker 4: an instrumental.
- 27:34Speaker 3: There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
- 27:35Speaker 14: Man, have you seen the farewell tour?
- 27:38Speaker 3: Not yet?
- 27:38Speaker 14: No go see it. It will It'll make you cry twice.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Really Oh yeah, what part?
- 27:45Speaker 9: Why?
- 27:45Speaker 23: Well, I've got just a huge production now. But they
- 27:49Speaker 23: do a they do a video of Ronnie singing and
- 27:53Speaker 23: they play to it. Yes, very heavy, oh wow yeah,
- 27:57Speaker 23: and then Johnny continues song. Then the same thing Billy
- 28:00Speaker 23: Powell place on video plays.
- 28:02Speaker 14: Right solo and then Peter takes over.
- 28:04Speaker 9: It's it's cool yeah technology.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 28:08Speaker 4: And how Billy Powell got into that band was fascinating
- 28:11Speaker 4: because he was like the roadie I think, right, and
- 28:13Speaker 4: his playing was like very classical. And then they said,
- 28:16Speaker 4: wait a minute, fucked that roady ship and they fired
- 28:18Speaker 4: him and then to.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Join the band.
- 28:21Speaker 4: So also, I want to talk about Greg Allman. Weren't
- 28:24Speaker 4: you guys opening up for his last show ever?
- 28:28Speaker 9: Yeah, the laid Back Festival in Atlanta. I don't think
- 28:31Speaker 9: anybody at the time knew it would be his last show,
- 28:34Speaker 9: but I guess it turned out that way.
- 28:36Speaker 3: How heavy was that?
- 28:37Speaker 9: It was heavy?
- 28:38Speaker 5: Later?
- 28:39Speaker 19: Yeah, but.
- 28:41Speaker 9: I didn't know until you know. He he was a
- 28:45Speaker 9: guest on on a song on.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Oh Yeah Our Last on the Wing Free on Them,
- 28:52Speaker 4: which is one of my favorite songs off that record
- 28:54Speaker 4: by the way.
- 28:55Speaker 9: Thank you. We didn't know he was that ill, and uh,
- 28:58Speaker 9: we weren't. We actually weren't been there the day that
- 29:00Speaker 9: he came. We were in Spain, and but he went
- 29:03Speaker 9: in with our engineer and with a group of people,
- 29:06Speaker 9: and one of his really close friends later said, man,
- 29:10Speaker 9: he really wanted to do that, which I mean just
- 29:13Speaker 9: blows my mind. That's so giving of him. He didn't
- 29:15Speaker 9: have to do that, right, who are we?
- 29:16Speaker 19: Right?
- 29:17Speaker 9: But he was so sick and went and did it anyway.
- 29:19Speaker 4: And so you guys never played that song with him, No, no, kidd,
- 29:24Speaker 4: the technology is pretty amazing.
- 29:26Speaker 9: Yeah, I had to go down to I went down
- 29:28Speaker 9: to making Georgia he was playing a show at the
- 29:31Speaker 9: Cox Capitol Theater to ask him if he would sing
- 29:34Speaker 9: on it. Yeah, and uh And it took a you know,
- 29:37Speaker 9: building up your nerve because he could have said no, right, no,
- 29:41Speaker 9: I got my own gig to do. Thank you.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Would you would? You guys have been devastated if you
- 29:44Speaker 3: said no to that, probably.
- 29:46Speaker 9: But you know we would have moved on.
- 29:47Speaker 23: But gas money from him and but.
- 29:51Speaker 9: But that was heavy. But he wanted to hear it,
- 29:53Speaker 9: and so you know, he sent him the song and
- 29:55Speaker 9: he said okay, I'll do it.
- 29:56Speaker 3: It's a great song for him. Man, absolutely, so thank
- 29:59Speaker 3: you U. Back to you guys.
- 30:00Speaker 4: In the new record. You want to talk about that
- 30:03Speaker 4: a little bit. What was the inspiration?
- 30:05Speaker 9: And yeah, well it's just we we sort of have
- 30:10Speaker 9: the the same process, you know. We we all when
- 30:15Speaker 9: we make a record, we all play together, you know,
- 30:17Speaker 9: we play live. And it's not we never have the
- 30:22Speaker 9: luxury of a ton of time to spend in the studio,
- 30:25Speaker 9: so we can't make a Steely Dan record, you know,
- 30:27Speaker 9: we can't spend six months ago. But this time I
- 30:32Speaker 9: co wrote four songs with an old friend of mine
- 30:35Speaker 9: that you may know, Keith Nelson from Buck Cherry Sure,
- 30:38Speaker 9: which he and I have been friends for twenty five years.
- 30:41Speaker 3: I don't think I knew that.
- 30:42Speaker 9: That's pretty cool, but we never have made any music together.
- 30:46Speaker 9: We're just buddies, you know. And well he left that
- 30:48Speaker 9: band and he was going to produce music and ride
- 30:54Speaker 9: and stay at home. Yeah, and he called me one
- 30:56Speaker 9: day and said, hey, I got some I got some
- 31:00Speaker 9: it is you want to write some songs? And it
- 31:01Speaker 9: wasn't for an album, it was just a whim and
- 31:05Speaker 9: they wound up being really good.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Songs does he sing on the record? No, really nothing.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Which songs did he write?
- 31:12Speaker 9: Run Away from It All Nice, lay it all on
- 31:15Speaker 9: me right, nobody gives a damn and best seat in
- 31:18Speaker 9: the house.
- 31:19Speaker 10: Right.
- 31:20Speaker 4: I wrote my favorite favorite songs on a piece of paper,
- 31:23Speaker 4: and then I started realizing that I liked every song
- 31:25Speaker 4: on the record.
- 31:27Speaker 9: That's good, but a few that I.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Just wrote down His Flesh and Bones, run Away from It,
- 31:33Speaker 4: Medicate my Mind, Let Me Down Easy, And I think
- 31:36Speaker 4: it's the last song off the record, Mother Mountain, Mother
- 31:38Speaker 4: Mountain on Queue Up, Mother.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Mountain from BlackBerry Smoke on west Wood One Podcast Networks,
- 31:45Speaker 1: ob Radio.
- 31:53Speaker 26: In the Golden Honey, morning comes.
- 32:06Speaker 10: Cool and easy on the wind, un till the darkness
- 32:13Speaker 10: comes Upgain.
- 32:18Speaker 8: In the shoot, I find this Mother Mountain, Bring Me Springtime,
- 32:40Speaker 8: Whistle in.
- 32:41Speaker 5: The Tree, New Light, Changing with.
- 32:48Speaker 10: The Money, Water underneath Mope, brand new from Sport k.
- 33:05Speaker 8: F of the Rider Road, Mother Mountain, Bring Me.
- 33:51Speaker 26: Story Older than the Story, Mother Mountain, Bring Me.
- 34:00Speaker 19: Oh.
- 34:03Speaker 22: Yeah yeah, yeah, ye oh yes, oh wow.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Is that a cool song?
- 35:06Speaker 9: Thank you?
- 35:07Speaker 4: It's kind of has sort of dare I say, some
- 35:09Speaker 4: Crosby Stills and thatsh.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Like a vibe I should say.
- 35:13Speaker 9: That's fine. That's kind of what the what we're shooting for.
- 35:16Speaker 9: Is that kind of vibe, you know, not maybe not specifically,
- 35:19Speaker 9: but and that's Chris and Oliver Wood singing harmony on
- 35:24Speaker 9: that song from the Wood Brothers.
- 35:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:25Speaker 4: And then I started writing all the songs. I've got
- 35:28Speaker 4: this song as another song off the album. Then I'm like,
- 35:30Speaker 4: you know, stop writing all the songs down you like
- 35:32Speaker 4: call of it. So how's the road been?
- 35:34Speaker 5: Man?
- 35:35Speaker 9: It's good?
- 35:37Speaker 4: I mean to you guys still like being on the road,
- 35:38Speaker 4: because I know you are. You in the middle of
- 35:41Speaker 4: a tour right now. I'm not really sure what stopped us.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Is is it the beginning?
- 35:45Speaker 3: The middle, near the somewhere?
- 35:47Speaker 9: Well, we're seventy five percent of the way there, right,
- 35:53Speaker 9: We'll finish out September here in the States and then
- 35:56Speaker 9: go to Europe for seven weeks. Wow, we're done.
- 35:59Speaker 3: So you tour the whole summer? How was that?
- 36:02Speaker 9: It was busy?
- 36:02Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 36:03Speaker 4: Because I I like enjoying my summer. Yeah, I mean,
- 36:06Speaker 4: how do you guys find enjoyment on the road in
- 36:08Speaker 4: between the stage?
- 36:09Speaker 9: I mean, you know, there's plenty to do in the
- 36:13Speaker 9: good old USA. Yeah, plenty to do.
- 36:15Speaker 4: What was your favorite stop this time around? Anyone could
- 36:19Speaker 4: answer that please?
- 36:21Speaker 2: I mean, what were some good stops?
- 36:23Speaker 16: We were out west with skinnerd.
- 36:24Speaker 9: A little Bit right, that was good. Iowa that Hinterland
- 36:28Speaker 9: festival that was fantastic.
- 36:29Speaker 3: What made that fantastic?
- 36:31Speaker 9: Uh? Well, the people were great. But we played with
- 36:35Speaker 9: Stgil Simpson and Ratlift and Margot.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Price and rat Lift is pretty intense.
- 36:40Speaker 9: He's intense.
- 36:41Speaker 3: That music is pretty cool.
- 36:42Speaker 9: Sturgil.
- 36:43Speaker 3: I don't know much about Sturgel.
- 36:44Speaker 9: Well, he's he's sort of an Americana traditional country singer.
- 36:50Speaker 9: That's what his records kind of sound like. But he
- 36:52Speaker 9: showed up just a three piece, him on guitar, bass player,
- 36:55Speaker 9: and drummer, and it sounded like a James Gang, no
- 36:58Speaker 9: lights blown away, really just just a loud power tree.
- 37:02Speaker 14: It was like watching somebody great jam in their basement.
- 37:06Speaker 9: And he stepped to the mic at one point and
- 37:08Speaker 9: he was like, Okay, I don't know if you know this,
- 37:11Speaker 9: but our rule this year is we're not going to
- 37:13Speaker 9: play any of the songs the way that you know
- 37:15Speaker 9: him and so, and nobody cared. It was just like, Hey,
- 37:19Speaker 9: they're so good.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Who goods shit?
- 37:21Speaker 8: You know?
- 37:21Speaker 3: Uh, Dylan did that many years ago.
- 37:24Speaker 2: It takes guts.
- 37:26Speaker 3: I was pretty I'm not gonna lie to you. I
- 37:27Speaker 3: was pretty frustrated by that one.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, halfway through like a rolling stone, You're like, oh,
- 37:31Speaker 4: this is like a rolling stone, right, sweet jam.
- 37:38Speaker 3: He changed it up so much. Everyone's looking around at
- 37:40Speaker 3: and now was a guessing game. Which song is this?
- 37:42Speaker 9: You know, what have you seen Robert Plant?
- 37:44Speaker 5: Now?
- 37:45Speaker 3: Not in many yearsational.
- 37:46Speaker 9: Shape shifters or sure, he's had two or three different bands,
- 37:49Speaker 9: but he does that, and and I think that he
- 37:52Speaker 9: I mean, who am I to I'm not trying to
- 37:55Speaker 9: second guess Robert Plant, but I figured obviously he can't
- 37:58Speaker 9: sing the way he used to when he was in
- 38:00Speaker 9: his twenties or even thirties, so he's reimagined those songs
- 38:04Speaker 9: and he sings the way that he can.
- 38:07Speaker 10: Right.
- 38:07Speaker 9: But in that case, like they'll start some cool riff
- 38:10Speaker 9: and you're like, oh, that's cool, and then all of
- 38:12Speaker 9: a sudden he's singing ram alone and you're like, oh wow,
- 38:14Speaker 9: So it's almost like a surprise little gift everything.
- 38:17Speaker 3: Sure is it a deep voiced Robert Plant singing Ramball?
- 38:20Speaker 9: He's still up, there's still but it's just not the
- 38:24Speaker 9: you think he appreciates or hates Greta van Fleet sounding
- 38:27Speaker 9: just like them. He thought they were cool.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw that article. But I was wondering if
- 38:32Speaker 3: you just if he was trying to be cool, because.
- 38:34Speaker 14: That wo be awful if he's like they are horrible.
- 38:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:38Speaker 4: The first time I heard them, I wasn't sure if
- 38:41Speaker 4: it was some kind of like long lost led Zeppelin music.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Though it's crazy how they nailed that.
- 38:46Speaker 9: You know, he would have to be flattered to think
- 38:49Speaker 9: that his music still impacts young people now.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, oh yeah that that band's really into it.
- 38:54Speaker 9: So they're great.
- 38:55Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 38:56Speaker 3: So is your family on the road for the whole
- 38:58Speaker 3: summer or.
- 38:59Speaker 9: Just now just just I'll just see.
- 39:01Speaker 4: Okay, Oh well that's smart. What are you guys doing
- 39:03Speaker 4: in New York City while you're here? You find anything
- 39:06Speaker 4: good for the family?
- 39:07Speaker 9: I mean, weeks.
- 39:10Speaker 3: The fashion week parks, Central Park, people watching.
- 39:17Speaker 23: The people watching in New York City all saw a
- 39:19Speaker 23: fight earlier, fist fight, So that was good.
- 39:22Speaker 14: Oh really they fought. I saw a dude square off
- 39:25Speaker 14: with some girl.
- 39:26Speaker 3: I was pretty weird what he was squaring off with
- 39:31Speaker 3: his with his girl.
- 39:32Speaker 9: Yeah, that one goy.
- 39:34Speaker 14: Is that the way they do it on the island.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And I bet you, I bet you. The girl took
- 39:38Speaker 4: care of herself though.
- 39:40Speaker 3: She swung a bit right.
- 39:42Speaker 4: I mean, you walk the streets every day, You're gonna
- 39:44Speaker 4: find something great if you if you really want a
- 39:46Speaker 4: good hang, go to Times Square and go underground.
- 39:49Speaker 3: And the subway station there.
- 39:50Speaker 4: It is amazing with like you know, you got the
- 39:53Speaker 4: street performers and the crazy people and everybody in between. Man,
- 39:57Speaker 4: you want to see some stuff that is a spot
- 39:59Speaker 4: on your us.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Was nasty, that's that shi, It's easy.
- 40:02Speaker 26: Man.
- 40:02Speaker 9: The first time we played Everything Plaza that I saw
- 40:05Speaker 9: the greatest girl fight I think I've ever seen in
- 40:07Speaker 9: my life. Remember that. Yes, that girl just cleared like
- 40:11Speaker 9: people just parted really red. See. She came through swinging
- 40:15Speaker 9: at a dude and she uh, she she ended it.
- 40:19Speaker 9: It was like and we stopped and it was just
- 40:21Speaker 9: like it was in the middle of your so yeah,
- 40:25Speaker 9: and I'm sure they I mean, he he probably did
- 40:27Speaker 9: something sh had to ask for that, yeah, And she
- 40:30Speaker 9: straightened him out.
- 40:30Speaker 4: And then you just watched everyone just part to give
- 40:32Speaker 4: her room to they did, and then you guys stopped
- 40:35Speaker 4: your song.
- 40:36Speaker 2: We did We saw her the next night in Jersey thing.
- 40:39Speaker 9: Yeah, gave her a big hug. I really She's like, Hey,
- 40:43Speaker 9: I did I did what I had to do.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you guys, you guess you guys got a hardcore following.
- 40:47Speaker 4: This podcast started with me turning the corner and running
- 40:50Speaker 4: into one of your super fans that is from Texas.
- 40:54Speaker 4: You want to ask a question, bro, I forgot your
- 40:55Speaker 4: name already, even Steven, I'm sorry. We just met outside
- 40:58Speaker 4: and said you don't want to come up and meet
- 41:00Speaker 4: the band, and I hope you guys don't mind that,
- 41:02Speaker 4: but Steven, yeah.
- 41:03Speaker 13: I'd say I've seen you guys, I think three times
- 41:06Speaker 13: this year New Orleans, Oklahoma City and uh.
- 41:11Speaker 3: Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- 41:12Speaker 13: Tulsa and Tulsa was with Lucas Nelson. Lucas you introduced
- 41:16Speaker 13: me to him. How much did you guys enjoy playing.
- 41:19Speaker 9: With Lucas fantastic? I remember that night that was at
- 41:24Speaker 9: Caine Ballroom and we did we did a Leon Russell song.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Oh nice. Yeah, you got another question for these guys.

- 42:00Speaker 7: the Children's Network and all that.
- 42:02Speaker 9: Oh, thank you.
- 42:04Speaker 4: The cancer Right September's Cancer Awareness months, and it.

- 42:27Speaker 23: would happen to you, you know, and your family ready
- 42:30Speaker 23: and your family, and it did, and people rallied around us,
- 42:36Speaker 23: supported us.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Right, and it was amazing, what uh, what kind of
- 42:40Speaker 3: cancer was it?
- 42:41Speaker 14: Neuroblastoma?
- 42:42Speaker 3: What? What?
- 42:43Speaker 15: Now?
- 42:43Speaker 3: What is that?
- 42:45Speaker 23: Well, you know, they don't they don't know what causes it,
- 42:48Speaker 23: but it was in eight percent of her bones and marrow.

- 42:56Speaker 5: Wow.
- 42:57Speaker 3: So and she credits U. Well you credit as well.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Which hospital really helped you guys get through this? In Atlanta?
- 43:04Speaker 3: In Atlanta?
- 43:05Speaker 10: Right?
- 43:06Speaker 11: Wow?
- 43:07Speaker 22: Bro?
- 43:07Speaker 3: That's happy?
- 43:08Speaker 12: Man?
- 43:08Speaker 16: Yeah?
- 43:09Speaker 7: Uh so?
- 43:10Speaker 4: Uh you guys are part of the cancer Children's Cancer
- 43:13Speaker 4: Awareness Month which is September, right, And is there anything
- 43:16Speaker 4: that the fans could.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Do every month?
- 43:18Speaker 14: I mean the fans already do you know?
- 43:20Speaker 23: We do a meet and greet every night after our
- 43:22Speaker 23: shows and all the money goes to Children's Hospital. Right,
- 43:26Speaker 23: So we do that, not just in September, we do
- 43:29Speaker 23: We do it all year around.
- 43:31Speaker 3: And but September there is definitely a huge focus on it.
- 43:34Speaker 14: Yeah, that's that's the marketing thing with Children's.
- 43:37Speaker 4: Well, obviously you don't want to stop after September, but
- 43:39Speaker 4: if they have a focus on one month at least,
- 43:42Speaker 4: you know that that hopefully will spread awareness and and
- 43:46Speaker 4: get people to continue it past the month.
- 43:48Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 43:48Speaker 23: You can go to BlackBerry Smoke dot com, slash shoa

- 44:06Speaker 19: Man.
- 44:06Speaker 26: For real.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Oh, what's Stevens.
- 44:11Speaker 13: You just don't like fifty thousand dollars a couple of
- 44:13Speaker 13: weeks ago.
- 44:13Speaker 3: Yeah, another fifty g's man, that's.
- 44:16Speaker 9: The people, man, and people that come to the meet
- 44:18Speaker 9: and greet, they know, right, they know because we've made
- 44:21Speaker 9: it very clear to everyone that that's where. Yeah, you know,
- 44:24Speaker 9: if if you if you pay for that, your money's
- 44:27Speaker 9: going to at the right place.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Your your fan base is incredible.
- 44:30Speaker 4: I mean, they love you, guys, and I think it's
- 44:32Speaker 4: because you're you guys are very down to earth.
- 44:34Speaker 3: The first time I met you, guys, you just wanted
- 44:37Speaker 3: to hang you.
- 44:38Speaker 4: You performed a couple of songs, two or three songs
- 44:40Speaker 4: on my old radio show.
- 44:41Speaker 3: You teased waiting for the Thunder. Do you remember that?
- 44:44Speaker 5: I do.
- 44:45Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 44:45Speaker 4: I'm like, you know, you started jamming that, and then
- 44:47Speaker 4: right when it's getting really good, you're like, well, you
- 44:50Speaker 4: know you're gonna have to You're gonna have to go
- 44:51Speaker 4: to Irving Plaza to hear the rest of that one.
- 44:53Speaker 3: And we laughed ourselves, well, you know that.
- 44:56Speaker 9: You just can't make it through that song with acoustic instruments.
- 44:59Speaker 9: So it was like, I do this much of it
- 45:01Speaker 9: and that's.
- 45:01Speaker 2: All it was.
- 45:02Speaker 3: It was really good. You guys got an acoustic record coming.
- 45:05Speaker 9: Out, right, Yeah, it's an uh an EP accompaniment to
- 45:09Speaker 9: Find a Light nice, which was not really what we
- 45:12Speaker 9: planned to do when when we went into the studio
- 45:14Speaker 9: we were getting some video, right and we're just in
- 45:16Speaker 9: a circle, like playing in a living room, and it
- 45:19Speaker 9: just sounded great. Yeah, and uh at the end of
- 45:22Speaker 9: the day, actually not the end of the day. The
- 45:24Speaker 9: next week when the audio guys mixed it, we listened
- 45:27Speaker 9: to it and we're like, I think people might like
- 45:30Speaker 9: this very cool?
- 45:31Speaker 19: Have it?
- 45:31Speaker 6: So?
- 45:32Speaker 5: Is it?
- 45:32Speaker 3: Different versions of songs on Find the Light?
- 45:34Speaker 9: Yeah, in a Tom Petty cover? Which one you got? Lucky?
- 45:39Speaker 3: That was a tough one when we lost Tom Petty Man.
- 45:42Speaker 3: He was he was quite the talent.
- 45:44Speaker 4: Besides obviously a musician, he was he was a lot
- 45:46Speaker 4: of fun to listen to when he did his radio
- 45:48Speaker 4: show because he would pick out some great songs that
- 45:50Speaker 4: you would never.
- 45:51Speaker 9: Think of Harry Treasure Show.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 45:53Speaker 15: Oh.
- 45:54Speaker 3: You guys obviously are are fanci and you.
- 45:56Speaker 9: Know he leaves a he leaves a huge hole in
- 45:59Speaker 9: the touring here, like now that there's no more Heartbreakers,
- 46:02Speaker 9: to it. That was something everybody always looked forward to,
- 46:05Speaker 9: like old Tom's going back out on the road, right
- 46:07Speaker 9: not now.
- 46:08Speaker 5: Yeah, that's it.
- 46:09Speaker 3: That was just incredible.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Wow, this got pretty Yeah, that did Debbie Downers. Let's
- 46:17Speaker 1: pick it up by listening to run Away from it
- 46:19Speaker 1: All by the One and Only BlackBerry Smoke.
- 46:38Speaker 11: Standing on a bridge, the water keeper food by.
- 46:46Speaker 8: I've clipped the corner in the river.
- 46:48Speaker 5: Then I headed for the other side.
- 46:52Speaker 11: So I made the same wist that I always do
- 47:00Speaker 11: stop three.
- 47:01Speaker 5: Day day of a con true gave me lacking land.
- 47:06Speaker 8: Now I'm like, they don't even know who I alp.
- 47:15Speaker 19: Up.
- 47:17Speaker 5: Got it out laid that's so beautifully.
- 47:21Speaker 8: Don't you every doot a thing?
- 47:24Speaker 19: Be ver?
- 47:31Speaker 11: Oh go swistle in the wind and the dead man.
- 47:39Speaker 11: I'm walking through that hell the shadow hidden for the
- 47:44Speaker 11: life I will help for welcome back.
- 47:51Speaker 5: I always do.
- 47:52Speaker 8: Got to find myself a life that's shiny new. They
- 47:57Speaker 8: say that to choose the storm said on scream. I
- 48:02Speaker 8: went around to see it.
- 48:07Speaker 11: My side up for me, got it out laid out.
- 48:12Speaker 16: Sorry, beautify.
- 48:15Speaker 8: Don't you ever thought.
- 48:16Speaker 16: A thing we can out?
- 48:19Speaker 19: And I'm a.
- 48:24Speaker 11: Squeeze every time battles street after my time jumping out
- 48:30Speaker 11: tomorrow before gos that don't matter at the same baby,
- 48:35Speaker 11: weaken around.
- 48:41Speaker 17: All right, Bollard, Wow, mip to me, got it out
- 49:23Speaker 17: so beautifully.
- 49:26Speaker 8: Don't you ever about a thing?
- 49:28Speaker 27: If we can out with a.
- 49:35Speaker 11: Squeezing every time, bottle us after my time jumping.
- 49:40Speaker 22: Off tomorrow before it goes, there's no matter what.
- 49:45Speaker 5: The same if we get.
- 49:47Speaker 19: Around with h M.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Hey, Robert, you got a question for BlackBerry smoke. He
- 50:30Speaker 3: works at Westwood one. He he's seen a lot of shows.
- 50:33Speaker 3: He was telling me outside. You lived in Atlanta for.
- 50:35Speaker 2: A while, right, did six years in Atlanta?
- 50:37Speaker 3: And and these guys obviously, yeah, that's yeah, Wait what happened?
- 50:42Speaker 2: I did six years old?
- 50:43Speaker 14: But why is he laughing at you?
- 50:45Speaker 8: Because he said you got out like I was in it.
- 50:48Speaker 9: I was in Attica. I was in Atlanta.
- 50:50Speaker 3: But are you guys still down there full time when
- 50:53Speaker 3: you're not touring? Okay? Because when I you know, when
- 50:55Speaker 3: you do radio, you get fired a lot.
- 50:57Speaker 4: And I got fired when I was in Boston for
- 50:59Speaker 4: saying the mayor of Boston died in a fiery car accident,
- 51:03Speaker 4: and they showed me to the border. But good stuff, right,
- 51:07Speaker 4: Look he's dying. It was an April fulls prank and
- 51:09Speaker 4: they didn't have a sense of humor. But anyway, the
- 51:11Speaker 4: next stop was either New York or Atlanta, and the
- 51:15Speaker 4: guys down there in Atlanta were trying to convince me
- 51:17Speaker 4: that Atlanta.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Was just like New York, and I just could not
- 51:21Speaker 3: see that.
- 51:22Speaker 2: It's just like there are about five blocks and five
- 51:25Speaker 2: neighborhoods in the city, right, well, Buck had sort of
- 51:28Speaker 2: like the Upper east Side on a Sunday, Okay, I
- 51:31Speaker 2: lived in an area called Inman Park, which was a
- 51:33Speaker 2: little more like Williamsburg Brooklyn, right, and yes, nice and
- 51:40Speaker 2: and now it's more gentrifying all that. So then I
- 51:42Speaker 2: spent a couple of years out in the what was
- 51:45Speaker 2: the Sticks, which is now you know, Upper Fulton County
- 51:48Speaker 2: is more suburbs, and they're pushing almost, I mean, the
- 51:52Speaker 2: Metro is going to be all the way up to
- 51:53Speaker 2: the Tennessee border, up up to Chattanooga. But I think
- 51:56Speaker 2: I saw you, guys, and I was just trying to
- 51:58Speaker 2: I was looking up the bar, I want to say,
- 52:00Speaker 2: it was in Gwinette, like.
- 52:03Speaker 3: Oh it was a country country boy, yeah, wild Bill Bill, Yes, yeah, you.
- 52:09Speaker 9: Know that place holds thirty eight hundred people. Yes, holy cow, yeah.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Yeah it was I want to say it was you
- 52:14Speaker 2: guys and Jamie Johnson, I think, yeah, oh yeah, Well.
- 52:21Speaker 3: I was going to tell these guys you've seen the
- 52:22Speaker 3: Almond Brothers. How many times?
- 52:23Speaker 2: One hundred and fifty one times?
- 52:25Speaker 8: Can you believe that?
- 52:26Speaker 3: I believe it?
- 52:29Speaker 2: They You know, I worked in radio for almost as
- 52:32Speaker 2: long as Opie has, and they would come and do
- 52:34Speaker 2: the Beacon run right, yeah, right, So I started in
- 52:36Speaker 2: Boston too, it's cheating eighteen.
- 52:42Speaker 4: I lived like ten minutes from the Beacon Theater, so
- 52:44Speaker 4: I squeezed out about twenty to thirty all my brothers
- 52:47Speaker 4: shows myself, but one hundred and.
- 52:49Speaker 9: Fifty bus what's the record of the the consecutive shows?
- 52:56Speaker 9: Did it get up to fourteen, fifteen.
- 52:57Speaker 2: Eighteen eighteen here at the Beacon? Is that eighteen in
- 53:01Speaker 2: a row?
- 53:02Speaker 9: Or do they have a night off?
- 53:02Speaker 2: Well, they do do nights off, Okay, so they do
- 53:05Speaker 2: like a week Tuesday night or something like that. But
- 53:08Speaker 2: they would basically run the entire month and then a
- 53:11Speaker 2: bunch of times down in Atlanta, a bunch of times
- 53:14Speaker 2: on the road Woodstock ninety four. Yeah, you know all
- 53:18Speaker 2: that sort of Have you seen Dwayne Betts, Yeah, he's fantastic.
- 53:23Speaker 5: Like him.
- 53:24Speaker 2: We saw Dicky's last I saw Dicky Betts's last show
- 53:26Speaker 2: here okay in New York, maybe two three weeks ago.
- 53:29Speaker 2: And you know, Dicky, I guess gott arthritis and stuff.
- 53:33Speaker 2: It's a tough little to be playing for him. And
- 53:36Speaker 2: you could hear you get the chord wrong and then
- 53:38Speaker 2: his kid would just sort of walk up, stepped in,
- 53:40Speaker 2: lean lean over. Yeah you could where I was sitting here,
- 53:43Speaker 2: He's shouting the chord to him and Dicky gets back
- 53:47Speaker 2: into it, and yeah, you know faces. I mean, it's
- 53:50Speaker 2: a great father son moment that he's helping his old
- 53:53Speaker 2: man through the whole thing.
- 53:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that's pretty cold.
- 53:55Speaker 4: Those shows were special because they always get special guests
- 53:58Speaker 4: to you know, depending on the night, and you never
- 54:00Speaker 4: knew who you were going to see. I got to
- 54:01Speaker 4: sit behind Greg Allman on the stage once. Oh yeah,
- 54:04Speaker 4: that was cool seat in the house, and he would
- 54:06Speaker 4: just stand right next to me.
- 54:08Speaker 3: Well, you know, Warren Hayes was.
- 54:09Speaker 4: Doing some you know, long night long solo and he
- 54:13Speaker 4: was just chilling out, having the time of his life.
- 54:15Speaker 6: Man.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Right before I moved to Atlanta six years ago was
- 54:19Speaker 2: we saw I saw the Great So there were two
- 54:21Speaker 2: times in the entire history of the band. They ate
- 54:24Speaker 2: greg Or Dwayne did not play with the band. Both
- 54:28Speaker 2: of them were too drunk to play back in the
- 54:30Speaker 2: late you know, seventy or so. And then one of
- 54:33Speaker 2: these last runs about six years ago, Greg got sick
- 54:35Speaker 2: on the final night, so they doctor John came out
- 54:39Speaker 2: and that you know, but basically it was Warrensby right, Yeah,
- 54:43Speaker 2: but it was you know, historic.
- 54:44Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 54:44Speaker 3: And then he also saw the other Atlanta band, the
- 54:47Speaker 3: Black Crows.
- 54:48Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 54:48Speaker 3: How many times from the Black Crows. Yeah, a hundred
- 54:50Speaker 3: times with the Black Crows.
- 54:53Speaker 9: Riches in Town tonight too, Riches in Town MacBride.
- 54:57Speaker 3: Yes, have you ever played with those guys?
- 55:00Speaker 9: Yeah, we just did some shows with him and oh
- 55:02Speaker 9: no kidding back in July.
- 55:04Speaker 3: Oh it was great.
- 55:05Speaker 9: That would be a great, fantastic that their record is
- 55:08Speaker 9: great to the new record?
- 55:09Speaker 3: Right, has he come on stage with you, guys, Chris?
- 55:12Speaker 9: Really, we've done a bunch of sit in.
- 55:14Speaker 3: Can you see that online? Yeah? Oh, I got it.
- 55:17Speaker 4: I'm gonna go YouTube and after this, I gotta check
- 55:20Speaker 4: that out.
- 55:20Speaker 3: I've always loved the Black Crows. Yeah, man, man, Chris.
- 55:23Speaker 9: Do you hear Chris's story about meeting Greg Almend for
- 55:25Speaker 9: the first time?
- 55:26Speaker 3: No, please tell it.
- 55:27Speaker 9: He said that they were I think in New York
- 55:29Speaker 9: City and h there the Crow's first record had just
- 55:32Speaker 9: come out, and uh, he said Warren Haynes. So Chris
- 55:36Speaker 9: and Rich were together, and he said Warren Haynes saw
- 55:38Speaker 9: him in the dressing room area and came over and
- 55:40Speaker 9: was like, oh, hey, guys, I love your record. You
- 55:42Speaker 9: know it's fantastic. And he said we were, said Warren is,
- 55:46Speaker 9: of course, he's always very nice and he's a gentleman,
- 55:50Speaker 9: and he said. Greg walked out of his dressing room
- 55:52Speaker 9: and Warren said, hey, Greg, this is the two brothers
- 55:55Speaker 9: I told you about from Atlanta, the Black Crows, And
- 55:58Speaker 9: Greg went, who get us a ship?
- 56:07Speaker 3: I got in trouble once for your touching his mic.
- 56:09Speaker 9: Oh yeah, you know.
- 56:10Speaker 4: I mean you guys know, you know, you get the
- 56:12Speaker 4: radio DJ to go up there and announce fifteen minutes
- 56:15Speaker 4: before you actually come on stage.
- 56:16Speaker 3: And you know, the radio guy me being the guy
- 56:19Speaker 3: in this story, you know, you feel like, you know,
- 56:22Speaker 3: a hot shot.
- 56:23Speaker 4: And they had one rule, do not touch Greg Almond's
- 56:26Speaker 4: bike and I was just starting out on radio and
- 56:28Speaker 4: I got to introduce it was Greg.
- 56:30Speaker 3: Almond when he was doing the solo thing, and I
- 56:33Speaker 3: touched the mic and I caught hell backstage. Man, they
- 56:36Speaker 3: yelled and screamed out. I was just a kid, and
- 56:38Speaker 3: I was. I was out of my mind nervous, man.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I grabbed it because I was so nervous. I
- 56:43Speaker 2: just grabbed it like this, and I was shaking just
- 56:45Speaker 2: to make.
- 56:45Speaker 4: My dumb announcement that no one, honestly, would you know,
- 56:48Speaker 4: gave a shit about.
- 56:49Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, right, we were doing the show at
- 56:54Speaker 2: station I was working at in Boston, and it was
- 56:58Speaker 2: the further shows right that after the you know, after
- 57:01Speaker 2: Jerry died, you had that, those two runs. So it
- 57:03Speaker 2: was the Almonds and the Crows were all on those tours.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Were at great Woods, right, which I don't know what
- 57:08Speaker 2: it's called these days, but this venue up in Massachusetts,
- 57:10Speaker 2: and uh, the Almonds are playing and they're in this deep,
- 57:14Speaker 2: you know, warrants, just in this deep, incredible groove and
- 57:16Speaker 2: I'm backstage with the station and I feel this, you know,
- 57:20Speaker 2: this kind of arm come over me and pull me in,
- 57:23Speaker 2: and it's Chris, and he goes, you're having a religious experience. Sure, yeah,
- 57:30Speaker 2: absolutely goes, and this is going to come back someday,
- 57:35Speaker 2: like what's going to come back? Now, this, this whole
- 57:37Speaker 2: thing is going to come back someday. I ran into
- 57:40Speaker 2: him probably ten years later, and he went still having
- 57:42Speaker 2: that rudalizous experience. And at the time I was like, heavy,
- 57:45Speaker 2: I wouldn't have recognized man, like this guy's in it.
- 57:47Speaker 2: He gets just the other day this is in just
- 57:51Speaker 2: what you said reminded me of Uh. We saw Chris
- 57:55Speaker 2: at the peach Fest in Pennsylvania and you years ago,
- 58:00Speaker 2: twenty two years ago, Briton Richard and I were in
- 58:04Speaker 2: a band with another singer who wrote some songs and
- 58:08Speaker 2: we made a record with him, and he was our
- 58:11Speaker 2: buddy then, but he was a little whatever.
- 58:13Speaker 9: We didn't fit anyway. He had this song and it
- 58:17Speaker 9: had a goofy title, and at Peachfest the other day, Chris,
- 58:21Speaker 9: out of the blue, goes, whatever happened to that dude,
- 58:23Speaker 9: And he said the title of that song, and I
- 58:26Speaker 9: thought it was called Brooklyn Wine, like wine, that's the
- 58:29Speaker 9: name of a song this guy wrote, which that's goofy.
- 58:32Speaker 9: But I was like why the hell would you remember that?
- 58:36Speaker 9: And he goes, I don't know, man, I'm on the
- 58:38Speaker 9: spectrum somehow. He goes, I don't remember shit like that.
- 58:44Speaker 4: I gotta ask on one hackey question. BlackBerry Smoke, Where
- 58:48Speaker 4: did the name come from?
- 58:50Speaker 2: From him?
- 58:50Speaker 3: From Chris Robinson, what's the story?
- 58:54Speaker 23: We just we asked him we were looking for a name.
- 58:58Speaker 23: We were going to start playing out and we had
- 59:00Speaker 23: this one name operating and then and.
- 59:03Speaker 3: I asked you what the name was?
- 59:06Speaker 23: Okay, so that was taken, right, So we start. I said, well, man,
- 59:10Speaker 23: you know, a good idea would be ask our friends
- 59:12Speaker 23: that are in bands that it's just too late for
- 59:14Speaker 23: them to change their name. That maybe down the road.
- 59:16Speaker 14: They were like, oh, we should have called ourselves right, right.
- 59:20Speaker 23: So we asked him and Steve Gorman and they're all,
- 59:24Speaker 23: everybody in that band's pretty funny.
- 59:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 59:26Speaker 23: So there was a lot of funny names that came
- 59:28Speaker 23: and uh, and then finally Chris sent uh the BlackBerry
- 59:34Speaker 23: Smoke and we're like, that's great.
- 59:36Speaker 3: That's a cool name, man. Why didn't they use it
- 59:39Speaker 3: at the top the Black Crows? Oh they were already
- 59:41Speaker 3: with the Black Crows.
- 59:42Speaker 4: Yeah, but I would assume they picked black Crows over
- 59:45Speaker 4: a BlackBerry smoke.
- 59:46Speaker 3: You would think maybe they had a short list of
- 59:47Speaker 3: names at that point.
- 59:48Speaker 14: Yeah, I think they just uh, I don't know. I
- 59:51Speaker 14: mean that who knows, he said.
- 59:53Speaker 9: He said New Earth Mud at one point, and then
- 59:56Speaker 9: he wound up calling his first rip solo record that.
- 59:58Speaker 3: Right, he's a trip man, he said.
- 1:00:00Speaker 14: Richard Turner explodes that was one name.
- 1:00:02Speaker 9: Oh really, Sweatpants Boner.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: Well, man, I really appreciate you guys. Man cut them off.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: Sweatpants bone No, No, I could talk for another half hour.
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: I just feel bad because you guys got a show
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: tonight here at Irving Plase, and I'm sure you want
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: to eat and hang with your family and do whatever
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: you do before the show.
- 1:00:21Speaker 9: Well, thank you for coming down here and doing this absolutely.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: And uh the new album, Find the Find the Light,
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: it's another singalong, man. There's not a bad song on
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: that record, just like the last one.
- 1:00:30Speaker 9: Thank you very much.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: And that I only started listening to you guys because
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: of Jim Florentine, Uh, with Waiting for the Thunder that
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: record Like an.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: Arrow, Thank you Like an Arrow.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: And I'm slowly going back because I think I think
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: this is your sixth record now, right, But I'm wearing
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: out the new one, thank you, simply wearing it out
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: from the top to the bottom, over and over again.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: And it's driving my wife nuts, but you know, because
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: I can't get enough of it, and I can't wait.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: I can't wait to see you guys live tonight. So
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: it's BlackBerry Smoke. Thank you so much, guys, Thank you.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: All right, that's it, Joey take it away.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: You get a picture, thanks, well done. Indeed well. Greg

- 1:03:43Speaker 3: the Foo Fighter. Oh all right, that's him there. All right,

- 1:03:51Speaker 3: that's great, that's what. That's terrific.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: But he's the archivist about everything that you've done, so
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: you know you got that going for him.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Yeah, which is nice.

- 1:05:33Speaker 4: I'm in a very empty Irving Plaza. I just interviewed
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: BlackBerry Smoke upstairs behind the stage in the green room
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: and they said, hey, man, stick around for the soundcheck
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: and you could record it for your podcast. So me

- 1:06:00Speaker 2: he's got like a real to real recording taped under
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: his jacket.
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: Taping the Doobie brothers. How ridiculous is that? And then
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: the batteries fell out, right, the.
