- 0:36Welcome back to a Hamster with a Blood Pen knife, The Doctor Who
- 0:40Commentary podcast. Almost 1000 episodes now.
- 0:44Terrifying. I'm here today with the
- 0:47elusively titled Mad Paddington. May I call you mad?
- 0:52You can if you want. My real name is Joe though, so
- 0:55you're welcome to call me that as well.
- 0:56Oh, A. Fine, name Joe, if I may say so.
- 0:59I'm fond of it. You know, I've never been out on
- 1:01a date with somebody called Joe. You know this will be the first
- 1:03time. Oh well, I'm glad to be the
- 1:06first. The comedian Russell, No.
- 1:10What's his funny name? Russell Brand.
- 1:12Russell Howard. Oh God, none of the Russells.
- 1:14It wasn't a Russell. Russell T Dangerous people would
- 1:17say he's. A comedian nowadays.
- 1:19Reginald D Hunter told me that Joe was one of his favorite male
- 1:23names. Why was that?
- 1:25I have no idea he with any further comment.
- 1:28We were just chatting at the bar after a show that he had seen
- 1:30him do, and he told me that it was it was one of his favorite
- 1:33male names, but so you know. You get a beautiful surname like
- 1:36McLaughlin, I get Ford. I don't know.
- 1:39It's, it's the problem. Well, I don't know, because I
- 1:41feel like you can probably get away with them if you're at
- 1:43school or something. You can have, you can have a
- 1:45nickname, you could be Fordie or whatever, which is not hugely
- 1:48imaginative. I had JoJo can't afford because
- 1:50we were quite a poor family unfortunately.
- 1:53What was your nickname at school?
- 1:54Well. I didn't really have one I.
- 1:56Huge tuttie, that sort of thing. Yeah, there's one one of the
- 2:00girls that I don't even really know her name, She was just a
- 2:02girl that she was just around in the lunch queue one day and she
- 2:04decided that she would try and make look like a like a, like a,
- 2:07like a Lucalin work. And it just didn't stick
- 2:10because. Sounds like a Eurovision Song,
- 2:12doesn't it? It's unwieldy, you know, You
- 2:14can't, you can't do a lot with it, really.
- 2:19Well, look, we keep talking about our names here.
- 2:22I fear we may be married by the end of the call.
- 2:24So let's talk about Doctor Who. And so now this isn't your first
- 2:27podcast, is it? You have, you know, recently
- 2:30been on a far inferior podcast. Too hot for TV?
- 2:33Yeah, well, I felt it was time for the big leagues, you know?
- 2:36Well after one. Well done.
- 2:38Yeah, no. Well, you know, I got some
- 2:39lovely feedback and I decided, yeah, sorry, I'm, I'm, I'm good
- 2:42enough for this. Do you think this is the big
- 2:45leagues? This is the sewers, baby.
- 2:48Well, look, if you're going for quantity rather than quality,
- 2:50then this is this is. Absolutely.
- 2:54You're absolutely spot on there. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:57Well, how did that go? Did you enjoy doing that
- 2:59podcast? I had a lovely time, yes, Dylan
- 3:01was a very accommodating host and he made me sound good in the
- 3:04edit, so that was, you know. Did.
- 3:06He take much out, you know, I think he takes out half of what
- 3:09I say. I've got no idea to be perfectly
- 3:11honest. I, I, I don't know if I've got
- 3:13the, the strength to listen back-to-back, you know, with
- 3:16just my audio and say. Now I've got to listen to that.
- 3:19And I was just like, I, I did press play today just for a
- 3:22second. I was like, I wanted to hear
- 3:23what he sounds like. And I was like, oh, that's a
- 3:25nice fresh accent. In the world of post casting.
- 3:28I don't think there's any other Yorkshire accents about, is
- 3:30there? I don't know.
- 3:31It's no, I suppose it's Jim Allenby's Grimsby and he's, he's
- 3:35sort of a Lincolnshire way. So it to my mind that's
- 3:38basically the same, but not many Yorkshire focal tell you that
- 3:41that's the case. Grimsby, did you say?
- 3:43Yeah, I think those sounds sort of sound like Yorkshire people
- 3:46with special needs, though, you know.
- 3:47Sorry, Jim, I don't want to be rude.
- 3:51Can I ask you a question about your Doctor Who journey?
- 3:54You can. When did you dive in and and how
- 3:57did you find it and how much have you covered?
- 4:01So I was I would have been the first time I sat down to
- 4:04properly watch an episode of Doctor Who would have been when
- 4:06Rose came out in 2005. I would have been you.
- 4:09Look young. Yeah, I was, I was 15 at the
- 4:12time, so in a way, slightly too old for it to have really, you
- 4:15know, taken over my life completely.
- 4:18Like I didn't grow up at the playground watching it because I
- 4:20was pretty much on the verge of leaving school at the point it
- 4:23came out that I was about to go to college.
- 4:25And then but I would definitely would have been familiar with
- 4:30the show beforehand. We'd have had, I'm reasonably
- 4:34certain, my first ever. One moment, please.
- 4:37Good night, darling. Love you.
- 4:39Good night. That's how do you.
- 4:42Me can she? I'm so sorry.
- 4:48Yeah, when you wake up in the night, you shout for me, not
- 4:50Mum, because she's tired. If you wish to watch Partners in
- 4:53Crime, come and join us. It will send her off Oh no, you
- 4:57said it scares her a little bit, didn't you?
- 4:58I'm. So sorry she doesn't know how to
- 5:02do this. OK, you shout for me.
- 5:04Love you. There.
- 5:07You know I don't edit, right? All this will be in.
- 5:09Yeah, that's. Fine, she's my you know, my
- 5:13son's already got his own podcast.
- 5:14This is. Just to let the audience know
- 5:16that he actually timed this, you know, he had her waiting outside
- 5:19the door. So we all understood that he was
- 5:21a responsible parent. Go in and says, yeah, that's a
- 5:24great way of letting people know that.
- 5:26You say that, but it's my wife that's got the children and
- 5:28she's dealing with it, so I've left them to come and talk to
- 5:31you so. I love a rebellious child, man.
- 5:35I'm not dealing with mum, all right.
- 5:36I want to deal with that. Well, no, but the problem we've
- 5:38got at the moment is she won't deal with anybody but Mum.
- 5:41So, Mum. 'S Oh really?
- 5:43Oh, OK, You what? You want to go fucking podcast
- 5:46tonight? OK, fine.
- 5:48I know well I booked this in before she turned into a
- 5:50nightmare so it's not my fault. Where were we, I.
- 5:54Can't remember I think I was saying yes.
- 5:56So I was familiar with the show before before Rose came out.
- 6:01I I think I said to Dylan, we I think the first episode of
- 6:05Doctor Who I ever saw would have been curse of the fatal death,
- 6:08which as a point I I've got a bit of a soft spot, to be
- 6:12honest. I think as a potted history of
- 6:14the show, it kind of does everything you need it to, you
- 6:15know what I mean? It's it.
- 6:17It pretty much covers everything and.
- 6:20You should have known all the horrors of Stephen Moffett to
- 6:22come then. After that it.
- 6:25Has to be said. You know, I'm a bit of a Moffett
- 6:27fan. I'm not not.
- 6:29Things were going so well. I know.
- 6:31Well, nothing. It can't be perfect, you know,
- 6:33But it's one of those I've not, I'm not a big rewatcher.
- 6:36So like a lot of it. I've only seen them once, like I
- 6:39my first the first episode of Matt Smith's series.
- 6:43I was it was. It's the only period of the show
- 6:45that my wife watched with me. She stayed for Smith, and then
- 6:48she buggered off again when he left.
- 6:50It's a. Familiar story and.
- 6:52I yeah, I don't really understand.
- 6:53I mean, I can get, I suppose going Smith to Capaldi is a big,
- 6:55it's a big change if you're not familiar with it, but the first
- 6:58episode of for the When the 11th Hour went out, I'd been excited
- 7:02for it all day and then my, a couple of my friends came round
- 7:05not to watch it. They just happened to knock on
- 7:06the door about 5 minutes before it started.
- 7:08And I said, would you mind just going away for an hour and
- 7:12coming back? Lovely to see you fuck off.
- 7:17Yeah, I was like, listen, this is a big moment for me and my
- 7:19people. If you could just go around the
- 7:21corner, like just go find, have a drink and come back in an hour
- 7:24because this is you know, pre, you know, I didn't, I didn't, I
- 7:26didn't want to record it on Sky so.
- 7:29For goodness. Sake.
- 7:30Well, exactly. It was very, very important
- 7:31moments. Friendships last forever, you
- 7:33know, but first transmissions only happen once.
- 7:36Exactly right. It's a new Doctor as well.
- 7:38It's not even like it was, you know, something shit like later
- 7:40on down the line. It was it was a big what?
- 7:42A shame it was Matt Smith. You know, I, I mean, dear I, you
- 7:45know you're a fan of Matt Smith as.
- 7:46Well. All the bad news.
- 7:50Even I do, I do like Matt Smith. I think he's fantastic actually.
- 7:53But even you have to have to. You have to accept surely that
- 7:55the 11th hour is is good. Like oh God I think most of 5 is
- 7:59great. Yeah, it all.
- 8:01Just went down. It all, I think 4:00 and 5:00 to
- 8:03be honest, is is sort of peak for me.
- 8:05I think that that that made change over period before Moffy
- 8:08got too confident and when Russell was kind of running at
- 8:12his best. I think that handover period is
- 8:15where it it was the best for me. You've got to remember right
- 8:17half what I say. I don't mean it.
- 8:19It's always just for elaborate theatrical effects, all right?
- 8:23Of course I'll try. To, you know, time when the.
- 8:24Doctor is still a dog, all right.
- 8:27It's well, listen, I can't remember a lot of it.
- 8:28This is I'm not very good at remembering the inflammation.
- 8:31You remember Matt Smearf as an old man?
- 8:33Well, scabby latex on his face. Throwing out bolts of
- 8:37regeneration energy and destroying entire Dalek armies
- 8:40in spite. I was like, what is How did we
- 8:42get here from the 11th hour? Now it's a it's a strange old
- 8:46journey, but then I think it's always been fucking ridiculous
- 8:49that so it's not like it's, you know, I think that's one of the
- 8:52things I always find very strange when people go off
- 8:54certain bits of it. Not, you know, you don't.
- 8:56Have one of the prettiest men on television you know there, and
- 8:58then you slaver him in all that horrible ugly latex and make him
- 9:01look hideous. Why would you do that?
- 9:03Only for about half an hour. We like covering you in Latex.
- 9:06I just wouldn't do it, you know, joke.
- 9:08Well, that's in a way that's a relief.
- 9:12Well, OK, so you said Series 4, Yeah.
- 9:16And so clearly you're a bit of a fan because I think as we were
- 9:20trying to determine the episodes, you suggested these
- 9:24two or did I, I can't even remember.
- 9:26I think I sent you a list of ones that I would be up for
- 9:29doing, or certainly are ones that I was fond of, and you
- 9:31responded with saying that nobody had done these two so.
- 9:34Somehow. I don't understand how you've
- 9:36got that far it it seems. That seems crazy to me.
- 9:39Well, I do have a confession. Actually a Partners in Crime was
- 9:41done once before. My ex partner and my ex best
- 9:46friend both came over and and neither one of them were Doctor
- 9:50Who fans and we had a grand old time recording partners in time.
- 9:53Unfortunately, the relationship ended and the friendship.
- 9:55Ended and I thought, well it will be a bit weird putting this
- 9:58out now. Yeah, I guess.
- 10:00I suppose under the circumstances, that might be.
- 10:04Yeah, should I ever need VAM, it's there.
- 10:06Yeah, yeah. That's the, that's the last
- 10:08episodes. We're getting Ian Lavine to
- 10:10recreate them with AI. Travellers.
- 10:12He was Belgian, right? I couldn't.
- 10:13You can't understand a word he's saying.
- 10:15He's got a sort of heavy French accent, you know?
- 10:17No, that's it's not an accent I can place.
- 10:21I feel like it's just a very, I don't know, I can.
- 10:25Hello, my name is and I'm talking about Catherine Tate in
- 10:29Partners in Krab. It was very like that.
- 10:32That's. If you could just make more
- 10:34sense on that, it would be great.
- 10:35I'll. I'll try.
- 10:36I can't guarantee anything, but I'll certainly have a go.
- 10:40Are you a fan of the 10th Doctor and Donna?
- 10:45Do you like the Ark this season, and do you think this is a
- 10:51particularly strong or weak year?
- 10:53That's three questions. But you look like you can handle
- 10:55it. I'll try.
- 10:56I I think. Like I say, I'm not I would say
- 11:00probably Tennant is my least favorite modern series Doctor.
- 11:04Oh boy, I don't. But that's only that's not
- 11:07because of anything he's done. I think that's just in
- 11:10comparison to all of the others. I think he I just think he is
- 11:15the one that I don't feel I want to revisit as often.
- 11:19But that said, I think I also think that of Tom Baker.
- 11:23So I think, I think I'm sure we'll get on to it.
- 11:26But when I when I've you asked before, sorry, you asked me 3
- 11:29questions and I'm going to answer a different one that you
- 11:31asked me about 5. Minutes ago that's.
- 11:33Great, we can come back to it. When you'd asked about how much
- 11:35of the show I'd covered. So in about 2000, 2021-2022, one
- 11:40of those years, I started in the January watching an episode
- 11:44every every dinner time from the very beginning and just sort of
- 11:48working my way through the show. So now I've seen it all now and
- 11:52I remember feeling Tom Baker was the one where by the time I got
- 11:54to the end of it, I was just ready for him to go.
- 11:57And everybody else is the one. Everyone else I feel like, you
- 12:02know, needed a bit of, you know, that's why I think the Big
- 12:05Finish has done such a good job with the other, the later
- 12:08Doctors, because you feel like there's more to be said with
- 12:10them, whereas with Tom, I think it was, it was done.
- 12:13And I think likewise with Tennant, I think he does a
- 12:15fantastic job. He's a great doctor, but he's
- 12:17the one that when I come back, I, I never think, oh, I really
- 12:20fancy watching some David Tennant.
- 12:21But when I always enjoy it when I watch it, there's never
- 12:23there's no, there's no, there's no I'll feeling, there's no,
- 12:26there's no, no ill will towards David Tennant.
- 12:28But. He's always he's he's my
- 12:30favorite of the new series Doctor.
- 12:32So I think this because it just captured me at that time when it
- 12:35came back and that's when my love for the new series was at
- 12:39its absolute high. I do think I do think like
- 12:43batting average wise, he probably had the strongest
- 12:46collection of stories. There's some weak ones in there.
- 12:48But in terms of absolute bangers, I think he did pretty
- 12:51well actually, especially the latter half of all of his
- 12:54seasons, 2-3 and four, I think, Yeah, really, really great stuff
- 12:58there. I think that's reasonable.
- 13:00I think at my peak is Eccleston, but obviously that's such a
- 13:03contained run. No.
- 13:04Wonderful. Like it's it's hard for him to
- 13:06really, I don't think there are any Duffers in in series one at
- 13:09all, to be honest. And I think that's but that's
- 13:12like I say, it's like ATV movie. It's one contained outing.
- 13:17That said the TV out the TV movie is not perfect by any
- 13:20stretch of the imagination. But sorry I I feel like.
- 13:23It's a guilty pleasure, but yeah.
- 13:24It is, yeah. I'm getting distracted but.
- 13:27Oh, never mind. Never mind the audience.
- 13:29Let's just talk. Come on.
- 13:30Yeah. I feel like I can't remember
- 13:31what the question was you asked me.
- 13:32Was it? A story I asked you about David
- 13:34Tennant and Catherine Tate. Do you like?
- 13:36Well, I mean, I thought you were going to say, but I really love
- 13:38Tennant this year because he's paired with Catherine Tate.
- 13:41But that's putting words in your mouth, no?
- 13:42No, to be fair, I think that probably was where I was headed.
- 13:45I think people. Do think that Don't.
- 13:46They yeah, I think I would have been one of those people.
- 13:48I'm not a fan of Catherine Tate's comedy particularly, so I
- 13:52enjoyed it well enough in Runaway Bride.
- 13:54She's not. She's not for me.
- 13:56The Catherine Tate show wasn't for me.
- 13:57The sketch stuff that she did wasn't really my bag.
- 14:00Would it surprise you to hear that?
- 14:01Oh, I absolutely loved it. There's a couple of bits that I
- 14:05enjoyed, but I think largely I it was, it was just one of those
- 14:08sketch shows that didn't, didn't, just didn't I think.
- 14:11Comedy is so, so personal to each person.
- 14:14Absolutely, yeah, I think, And it's one of those I always feel
- 14:17very comedy is probably my other big thing that I like to nerd
- 14:21out about. And so that's one of those
- 14:24things where when there's when there's something I don't
- 14:26particularly get or enjoy, it really irritates me.
- 14:29So I'm just like, I don't, I find myself very frustrated by
- 14:33it. But so I was one of those people
- 14:35that when she was cast as a full series companion, I was a bit
- 14:38like, really. But within 30 seconds, she's is
- 14:43just the perfect companion. She's exactly what what the
- 14:47series needed at the time. And she's exactly the sort of,
- 14:52she's the sort of companion I was really hoping Varadaseta was
- 14:54going to be because because she started out so strongly in that
- 14:58regard, I felt anyway that like, that sort of doesn't take any
- 15:01shit. She's just going to, you know,
- 15:06she's just going to not put up with the Doctor's nonsense.
- 15:09And Donna was a really, really great example of that.
- 15:11And if. Faraday had had a turn left or
- 15:13something like that. She would have fucking killed
- 15:15it. Yeah, she would have been
- 15:16amazing, but she just never got it, did she?
- 15:19It was so frustrating. It was so frustrating because it
- 15:21was such a strong start. We'll give the big episode this
- 15:23year to Millie, who had a load of great episodes last year.
- 15:27OK, very bad. Oh, sorry, we've gone into
- 15:29another era again. Oh yeah, we'll, we'll sorry.
- 15:31This this is going to happen a lot.
- 15:32The the idea the chances of me staying on subject are have you?
- 15:36Heard this podcast, nothing ever stays focused.
- 15:39Around here. Well, that's why it's one of the
- 15:40reasons I felt I might fit in, you know?
- 15:43You. Talk about whatever you want.
- 15:45All right, So David Catherine Tate the year, then what?
- 15:49How? What do you think before the
- 15:50year? Outstanding.
- 15:52I'm going to just I'm going to look at the back of me DVD now
- 15:55just to remember the Yeah, again, this is the one.
- 15:57This is actually, this is the series that I've watched most
- 15:59with my son as well. I think it's because I've been
- 16:02trying to get him into the show for years.
- 16:04Some would say indoctrinating. I don't think that's fair.
- 16:07I, I think, I think brainwashing is too strong a term.
- 16:10I think ultimately children need a bit of Doctor Who in their
- 16:12lives and I'm happy to be the one to provide it, you said.
- 16:16Garma fun that usually works. You know, just like you will
- 16:19watch it. Yeah, Yeah.
- 16:21Well, it's taken. It's taken a while.
- 16:22It's taken a while, but we've got there in the end.
- 16:24We sat through the well earlier in the year and that was that
- 16:29was a, that was a he did very well, no pun intended, if.
- 16:32That's the what this is, the gear.
- 16:34Is there a particular episode he last watching this year or that
- 16:37you particularly enjoyed? From from the the series that's
- 16:40just gone. From No.
- 16:41From 4:00. Oh, from 4.
- 16:43I'm trying to think he really enjoyed.
- 16:45Well, he felt if I'm going through it, what have we
- 16:50watched? He liked Voyage of the Damned,
- 16:52if we're including that. Partners in Crime, he enjoyed
- 16:55Fighters of Pompeii enjoyed. We've not seen Planet of the
- 16:57Ood, Sontaran Stratagem and Poison Sky, he said.
- 17:01Yeah, I thought that was a shame because I really like that one.
- 17:04I. Mean I do, it's sort of.
- 17:05Fair out of the mouth of babe, so I think we should defer to
- 17:08him there. Yeah, yeah, that's fair.
- 17:10And then Unicorn, the lost doctor's daughter.
- 17:13Both, both great. I've not I'm not doing midnight
- 17:16with him yet because I would still like him to sleep
- 17:18sometimes. Christ.
- 17:20But it's funny, isn't it? Because like, you know at the
- 17:22time it went out, there will have been children his aid
- 17:24watching. But like, because you know, you
- 17:26wouldn't have a, you wouldn't have a a notion, and you
- 17:28wouldn't have been able to pause it like you can now, like it
- 17:31would have been. Be fair though, you know there
- 17:33were children his age watching things like little zans getting
- 17:36crushed and attacking the side men and that back in the day
- 17:39people being machine gunned down in slow motion and.
- 17:41Genesis of the Daleks. I think you know Doctor Who's
- 17:44made kids Hardy. Yeah, psychopaths.
- 17:47One or the other. One of the two, yeah.
- 17:49No, your kid will probably go one or two ways.
- 17:51Yeah, some of the some of the drawings he's done I suspect
- 17:54actually might be a bit too late.
- 17:56But you're not in them. I don't want to turn on a true
- 18:00crime. 1 You know Joe, and here you know child murdered his
- 18:03parents. No, he didn't.
- 18:05He did a one of Peppa Pig on fire the other day and it was
- 18:07hard not to be like, yeah, that's fine.
- 18:09I think that's. Pig on fire.
- 18:11Oh yeah, I don't, I, I don't. It may not have come into your,
- 18:15your sort of purview that it's, I think it's one of those, you
- 18:17know, those rhymes that kind of go around every school.
- 18:20And there's always, I'm trying to think like, you know, the
- 18:22happy birthday to you, you, you went to the zoo, all that sort
- 18:25of thing. And that every school somehow
- 18:27knows, even though there's been no cross contamination.
- 18:30And the one that I think he has at the moment is pear per pig.
- 18:34Tripped on a wire, fell into a fire.
- 18:38Oh, OK, that music, doesn't it haunt you?
- 18:40Blood. Yeah, because the episodes are
- 18:41so short. My knees just watched it on a
- 18:43loop. I was like, I can't do it.
- 18:45And now I know how my mum felt about the Doctor Who theme tune.
- 18:48Yeah, now it's a It's not as bad as it could because my
- 18:52daughter's not a huge pepper thing at the moment.
- 18:55She's watching K pop Demon Hunters on on repeat and I mean
- 18:59the, you know, the soundtrack to that is absolute banger.
- 19:01After the banger demon hunters. That sounds amazing.
- 19:04It's fucking brilliant, I'm not going to lie.
- 19:05Watching this shit. We could be watching that
- 19:07tonight. I'm happy, I'll be happy.
- 19:09I'd be happy to go on and do K pop.
- 19:10Coming soon, the K Pop Demon Hunters podcast commentaries.
- 19:14It's it's, it's outstanding banger after the banger.
- 19:17I think you wouldn't want to watch it without the sound on.
- 19:18Do you know what I mean? That would be the trick that.
- 19:20Would be a problem. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:21I do love a bit of K pop, you know?
- 19:22Yeah, I think this is. I've tried to, I've tried to.
- 19:25It's not something that I know an awful lot about, but I've
- 19:27tried to introduce it and it hasn't really worked because
- 19:31they're just like now, this isn't this isn't from the film,
- 19:33so you can fuck off actually does.
- 19:37Oh, right, well. What we're watching again today,
- 19:40I've totally forgotten. Partners in Crime.
- 19:43Partners in crime. Yeah, sorry.
- 19:44One that is the one I. Have a confession to make about
- 19:48Rusty Davis season openers. I absolutely fucking adore them
- 19:53until RTD 2 and then I just feel as if he doesn't capture that
- 19:58lightning in the same way. But we may cover one of those
- 20:01later, which you love and I don't.
- 20:03So that'll be a really interesting, but I think at this
- 20:05point he's just perfected the jolly adventure, introduce the
- 20:11companion and just a whack of heart in the season openers in
- 20:18RCD 1. He did it in Rose, he did it in
- 20:20New Earth, maybe less so. He certainly did it in Smith and
- 20:23Jones. That's a great adventure, that
- 20:25and then here as well, you know it is.
- 20:27It is just a bit of fluff. Technically it's about people
- 20:31turning into, you know, fat balls that will run around
- 20:34going. But fat me.
- 20:37There's some heart in this, isn't there?
- 20:39There's some real emotion in this.
- 20:41Yeah, I mean, there's nothing to like.
- 20:45You say it, It's not it's not the deepest story, but then none
- 20:49of the best ones are, really. I think you're right.
- 20:50He he, he just he, he nails that tone especially like you say,
- 20:54he's, he's firing on all cylinders at this point.
- 20:56And I think this is the bit where he just kind of he really
- 20:59knows what he's doing. Like it's hard to imagine that
- 21:01he didn't just sort of, I feel like he could have just spat
- 21:04this out in the morning and without even really thinking
- 21:05about it because he's just, he's just got it.
- 21:08He just knows what he's doing. Well, and he's gone for
- 21:10something, hasn't he? He's gone for the fat loss
- 21:12industry. And so you can get a ton of
- 21:15jokes about that, but you also make some great comments about
- 21:17it as well. The bit at the end, just before
- 21:19that Jacqueline King's friend goes, Oh my God, Leo, look at my
- 21:24chins. I look amazing.
- 21:26And then she just goes and I've been eating like normal, which
- 21:29is what we all want when we're trying to lose weight.
- 21:31We want to eat the shit and we want to be thin.
- 21:34Yeah, exactly. He was basically predicting
- 21:36Ozempic. Are we sure that people who are
- 21:38on the Ozempic stuff now, are they not?
- 21:40Are they definitely not having little people walking out of
- 21:42them? Because I know two people, all
- 21:45right? They're trying.
- 21:46I've lost 2 stone recently, you know, Joe, And I've done that
- 21:48through doing a lot of walking up the hills where I live and
- 21:53not eating a lot. And I've got two friends that
- 21:55I've lost just a little bit more than me.
- 21:56But they've been on that drug and they haven't moved off their
- 21:59couches. I'm just saying this now, right?
- 22:02That's the lazy. Approach.
- 22:06You get you get a better get a better legs doing doing it the
- 22:09proper way. They're pretty amazing,
- 22:11actually. You can't.
- 22:12I'll get him out by the end of the episode.
- 22:15I look forward to. It should we go and watch this
- 22:18thing and see just how jolly it turns out to be.
- 22:23Would you do me a favour please? Of course.
- 22:25So lovely to have you. Would you count us in for the
- 22:27first time? Yeah.
- 22:28Do we go backwards or forwards? Yeah, charm in your hands.
- 22:32Fair enough. We'll go 123 and go.
- 22:36We're in. Oh God.
- 22:37Oh look, did you hear the sound? Then I had the sound on.
- 22:40That is so amateurish of me. I found an episode.
- 22:42In. Do you like this theme tune?
- 22:46Yeah. I mean, this is the, it's the LG
- 22:48as far as I'm concerned. It's not, it's not.
- 22:52See, this is the thing. I'm not very good with the the
- 22:56progression of these things, but this is pretty much the same as
- 22:58they've you've been using for the last three, Four Seasons,
- 23:00isn't it? It's not, it's.
- 23:00Just got a bit of piano in there to give it, yeah, but that's
- 23:03about it. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:04The little you know, the little string bits that did it did it
- 23:07did it did it's. Just I know we've disagreed a
- 23:10lot. Can we least agree that Peter
- 23:11Capaldi thing is the worst? That sort of scratchy cat.
- 23:14Yeah, I think so. I've been there.
- 23:17Yeah, I've been to. I've got a real fondness at the
- 23:19moment for the Jodie What? I thought my son's been
- 23:21listening to Vampire Weekend in the car on repeat and the The
- 23:26Whitaker one's fantastic it. Wasn't it fun?
- 23:28Vampire Weekend it. Was great fun.
- 23:30Yeah, fantastic. Boy, oh, what's going on here
- 23:32now? Donna Noble from The Runaway
- 23:34Bride. What's she doing back in the
- 23:35show? I know it's sorry.
- 23:37We will at some point. We all mentioned the episodes
- 23:39that we're supposed to refer into.
- 23:40Yeah. We're annoyed here though.
- 23:42So do you like all of this? One, the cross cutting of the
- 23:46Doctor and Donna and two the the Romans joke of they almost meet
- 23:51each other but never do. Yeah, I mean, it's one, it's one
- 23:53of the best jokes in it just works every time, doesn't it?
- 23:57I've never been disappointed by this.
- 23:58This as a as a gag as a bit I think.
- 24:02The most farcical bit is where they're in the telemarketing
- 24:05office and they both keep putting their heads up and down
- 24:07all the time. His beauty is so well directed
- 24:09as well. Like again, I'm not a big, I'm
- 24:11not a big understander of how telly is made and all that
- 24:16stuff, but I just think every, especially all the fast stuff,
- 24:20it's just so well put together. Like it just makes perfect
- 24:23sense. RTD said.
- 24:25I think if it's in DWM or the Writer's Tale, he said that this
- 24:29episode had the single most amount of shots and setups that
- 24:33they. Had to do.
- 24:34And he goes and you think that would be one of the big hits,
- 24:37not the season opener, but they just wanted it to have energy,
- 24:40you know, So it's sort of like cut, cut, cut, cut, cut all the
- 24:42time. And you know, you said you you
- 24:45are a fan of comedy. You have got to execute it
- 24:48perfectly for the. Jokes to land.
- 24:51Yeah, it's it really shows what he knows about sort of putting
- 24:54this sort of thing together. I'm really sorry.
- 24:56I'm taking my braces off because the IT keeps.
- 24:58Boy oh boy, is it hot in here. Do you want some music?
- 25:02It's not really. It's not really stuffy music, is
- 25:07it? But all.
- 25:08Right, OK. But I think it's scratching on
- 25:10me chair and I'm concerned that it's going to come through.
- 25:13Don't you worry, the very noises I'll put out on this thing,
- 25:17I'll. Be very distracted, be very
- 25:18distracting. You sound like I'm trying to
- 25:19remix my own spine. So.
- 25:23What do you oh, what do you think of fabulous?
- 25:26Oh, I want to call her Raquel from Corrie, but what's her
- 25:29name? Do you know what?
- 25:31I'm terrible. Sarah Lancaster.
- 25:32That's it, Yes. Is it is it is it the same lady
- 25:35from Happy Valley? That's that's her?
- 25:37Yeah, yeah, It's so diverse. Yeah, well, I can't I can't
- 25:41place I can't place it. Whenever I see you pictures of
- 25:43her in Happy Valley, I always think is it definitely the same
- 25:45person? I always need to check.
- 25:47But yeah, no, she's she's fantastic.
- 25:48She's so arch, so camp. It's just.
- 25:50Just like, I suppose she's a bit above, she's a lot above, but
- 25:53she's still playing it kind of straight.
- 25:55Yeah, like, it's just it, it feels very classic.
- 25:59Who you could have had, you know, she's like, she's like the
- 26:01ranny. Yes, you are.
- 26:02Oh yeah, the best Ronnie. I write Kate.
- 26:04Omar. Yeah, of course.
- 26:05Yeah, obviously. I think if if this episode had
- 26:08turned up in attitude 2, she would have been the Ronnie.
- 26:10But she's she. Probably would have.
- 26:12And he gives her great lines as well.
- 26:14What? What sort of country do you
- 26:16think this is? Oh, it's a beautifully fat
- 26:19country. Yeah, no, she's, she's
- 26:22delightful. She's what's?
- 26:23Going on here Doctor Who flirting with this girl.
- 26:26I know he obviously he knows, doesn't he?
- 26:27He knows, he knows he's a good looking boy, like Shooty getting
- 26:30away with, you know, with the, you know, and how do I know how
- 26:34I look? That was that was tenant shtick
- 26:36before. It was before it was shooting.
- 26:38I can imagine you as Doctor Who, you know, Joe, you'd be seducing
- 26:40all the ladies, wouldn't you? I don't know about that.
- 26:43I reckon so. Oh.
- 26:44Look at this now, popping up and down the divide of.
- 26:48It's so. Have you ever done this?
- 26:50You ever done any marketing? I did it for like.
- 26:53Six months and then somehow they promoted me to head of the team.
- 26:58I don't know how because I was so bad at it and.
- 27:01Fuck me, it's soulless work. Now I've not, I've my wife's
- 27:04done it a couple of times. I've known plenty of people who
- 27:06have. I've never had the pleasure.
- 27:09I've I'm absolutely useless on the phone.
- 27:11I've there's a there's a story that people like to tell about
- 27:13me at work. About the time that I rang a
- 27:14patient to try and arrange an appointment, had to leave a
- 27:17voicemail and finish the voicemail by going oh God
- 27:23because. What's the news?
- 27:24Was it your husband's dead? Oh God.
- 27:26I was just trying to ring them to rearrange an appointment and
- 27:28then it just, it went. So it went so badly downhill.
- 27:31Like I just was like, Oh no. And then hung up and then I had
- 27:34to leave a second message. It was awful, all right?
- 27:38I started laughing at a lady because she sounded like a robot
- 27:40once. You go to pick up a phone and
- 27:42they all go no. It's it's yeah, it's a well
- 27:46known thing. It's not.
- 27:48It's not good. Joe, look at his smile.
- 27:51I mean, he is charisma Incarnate David Tennant, isn't he?
- 27:55Oh, yeah. I mean, that's, he's just like,
- 27:58well, I think I said to you on the messages we were sending
- 27:59before that he's got that oral fixation.
- 28:01He loves doing anything with his mouth, doesn't he?
- 28:03Can't. He's got police, yeah.
- 28:07Oh hang on a minute, it's that psychopath from baby reindeer.
- 28:10Yeah, I was gonna say, like I say, I think she's, she's a way
- 28:12out stalking. That's where she's going now.
- 28:14Yeah, I mean, I think her. Career was sort of like slowly
- 28:17in the ascendancy. She wasn't quite there yet.
- 28:19That's why she's doing bit parts in Doctor Who.
- 28:21No, but she's the elder. She's fantastic.
- 28:23She's I can never remember her name either.
- 28:26I've heard people criticised that this man here, I don't know
- 28:30what the actor's name is. I think he's done some comedy
- 28:33that why on earth is he taking fat pills because he's so thin?
- 28:36Please do not think the body dysmorphia is.
- 28:40Only. For overweight people.
- 28:42No, that's I've spent my entire teenage years thinking I was fat
- 28:47and now I am fat and now I. Look at you, you are beautiful
- 28:51figure of a man. But a shoulder's upwards, Joe
- 28:56Absolutely fantastic. But but lower down, I'm like a
- 28:58frog sort of dangling. You know when you hold it and it
- 29:00just you're like a robot. I know the feeling, yeah.
- 29:02When you get up in the morning and yeah, yeah.
- 29:04Oh boy. But I think you're right, it's
- 29:08definitely not. It wouldn't be the reserve of of
- 29:11bigger people, would it? I think.
- 29:13No, I was always surprised whenever I went to those hideous
- 29:16Weight Watchers classes. You know, I've tried every diet
- 29:19me over the years. Yeah, when they go round and
- 29:21give you a bag of sugar and go, go on.
- 29:22How fat? Yeah, that's how much you've
- 29:24lost this week. They're very patched.
- 29:26There's loads of slim people there.
- 29:27It's it's. Yeah, well, we, we, me and my
- 29:30wife did Slimming World a while ago.
- 29:31Sorry, this isn't really a Doctor Who podcast anymore, is
- 29:33it? But no.
- 29:34But me and my wife did Slimming World before we got married and
- 29:36the the lady there constantly was playing us off against each
- 29:39other. Like I think.
- 29:40No, Yeah, it was. It was a.
- 29:42It was done better than you this week.
- 29:44Pretty. Much like it was exactly like
- 29:45that. So we had to go somewhere else.
- 29:47Was she? A bit like Matt.
- 29:48Lucas in the Little Britain sketch.
- 29:50She was exactly, exactly like that.
- 29:51That was it was a very relatable thing.
- 29:53On the table, scoffing a muffin. Yeah, I've always wondered
- 29:57actually, just to go to actually bring it back to the episode, if
- 30:00obviously he's noticed about the burglar alarm going off and the
- 30:03cat flap and stuff, where are the rest of them getting out?
- 30:06Well, we see one going out the window in a minute.
- 30:09Yeah, but like if you, you know, if you're, if you've got all
- 30:11your windows locked, no burglar. Like how are they?
- 30:13Do you know what I mean? Are they just hiding around it?
- 30:16Well. I'm not really bothered about
- 30:18plot holes, but I always wondered.
- 30:19Please don't. Be that fan.
- 30:20Come on. Such a fun idea, I mean.
- 30:23Yes, you are, absolutely. Right, but then the alternative
- 30:26is we don't have the quirky idea of people turning into little
- 30:30fat balls that walk away and. Let's be honest, it's one of the
- 30:33most joyous ideas the new series ever gave us.
- 30:36It's wonderful, I think. It is, it's beautiful and I
- 30:39just, I, I would have one as a pet.
- 30:41Stupid Joe, isn't it? I'd I'd have one as a pet.
- 30:45I think I'd be disappointed that they were leaving.
- 30:47Should never have a toy, I'd pose.
- 30:49I did, yeah. I had the the squeezy sort of.
- 30:51It was like a, was it like a stress ball type thing and it
- 30:54was full of like stuff for the phone.
- 30:55Did it go dirty like mine? Mine would be sort of black the
- 30:58more I squeezed it. Yeah, it burst mine.
- 31:01It was What, wasn't it? You're doing with it.
- 31:04It's best not to say but the. This isn't a safe space for that
- 31:08sort of. Thing, but it was very, very
- 31:10white, blue G kind of explosion. It was not.
- 31:13Oh. Really.
- 31:14You. Should have filmed it into slow
- 31:16motion. And then it burst.
- 31:18You should have done. Oh boy.
- 31:21This is quite horrific though, what happens to Stacey?
- 31:24Like, it's kind of it's that fine line that Doctor does
- 31:26between being silly and cute and absolutely horrific because
- 31:31she's turned into a load of fat people.
- 31:34There's nothing left of her. Yeah, and the effect is great.
- 31:37And I think she just, she's, she plays it so well.
- 31:40But yeah, like, it is, it's terrifying.
- 31:42I think I said to you before that we it really freaked my son
- 31:45out the first time I thought in my head, I think when I was
- 31:48trying to get him into the show, this would be a perfect.
- 31:50Like, it's just that little thing.
- 31:52They're not scary monsters. They're just silly, cute little
- 31:55thingies. And then we had to turn it off
- 31:57at pretty much the exact moment where she melts into melts into
- 32:01added pose. I think she was just, he was
- 32:03just like she. Felt a belter, doesn't she?
- 32:06She really screams and then the effect where they all just.
- 32:09Explode out of her. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:11No, it's great. Are you horrified by her turning
- 32:15into fat or those weird frames up her stairs that are
- 32:18completely empty? I don't think I've ever noticed
- 32:22that before. It's a statement.
- 32:24Oh, is it? Yeah, No, it's it's a curious
- 32:25choice. Maybe it's maybe she's intending
- 32:29to fill them with future where it's like a thing of you know,
- 32:31she'll she'll put them together as she as she.
- 32:35Goes on and has got no life. She's got nothing to put in her
- 32:38picture frame for Stacy and now she literally has no life.
- 32:42No, I think we don't. I, I feel pleased for the ad
- 32:45opposed that they have no concept of what's happened
- 32:48because I'd be, I'd be sad for them if they were upset, you
- 32:50know, if I mean, if they had a sense of guilt.
- 32:53That's the. Idea of these sort of, you know,
- 32:55benign monsters there's. Just there's just nothing bad
- 32:59about them at all, just that they've come from people, that's
- 33:02it. Yeah, well, I think there's a
- 33:03there's a is it for magazine did a comic strip with some like the
- 33:11King and Queen Adipose, but it was like back at the palace.
- 33:14And they were yeah. And it was they basically just
- 33:17looked like big ones, but with a crown on.
- 33:18It was very, it was very cute. I'll have to seek that one out
- 33:23that. Sounds great.
- 33:24I've not read it for ages, but I yeah it's good fun.
- 33:28This is wonderful. We're doing this now on the
- 33:30streets. That what we were doing in the
- 33:32office. Donna's going up one St. the
- 33:34Doctor's going up another, so. They don't meet do that and and
- 33:38obviously that's a great comic set piece when they eventually
- 33:41do see each other. Yeah, I think the way he
- 33:44structured that at the 1st 15 minutes and then the pay off
- 33:48being that what that probably the best scene in the episode.
- 33:50Oh for sure. It it it does go to show though.
- 33:53Russell does have great comedy chops when he wants.
- 33:56To he really knows what he's doing when it comes to that
- 33:58stuff and I don't really know what happened recently, but the
- 34:01and like I say, I think I am largely positive on the newer
- 34:04stuff, but I do think that. When the Rani was eating, you
- 34:07know, that was quite amusing. I I really enjoyed that.
- 34:09I thought it was really funny. I think it's just it.
- 34:12I definitely think it's helped though, watching it.
- 34:15I think it's lovely to watch it with new eyes because he's
- 34:17really enjoyed the 7th Doctor stuff as well.
- 34:18I don't just intend to keep talking about my lab the whole
- 34:21time, but it's just been such a formative thing watching it
- 34:25together recently. Well, now I get it.
- 34:26Fraser Gregory, his son, started asking to watch Doctor Who now
- 34:30and it was a watershed moment in his house, but he was trying to
- 34:33force feed him it before. It's a real moment when they
- 34:35start saying can I watch Doctor Who please?
- 34:37The the the the moment for me that really cemented it as one
- 34:41of the best. It was like like a full on like
- 34:43have I wished on a star. What's happened here was when he
- 34:46asked me if we could watch the animated macro terror, and I was
- 34:49like, Christ, It was like, yes, of course you.
- 34:51Realise he was indeed. Then there's.
- 34:53No going back from that really. No, we've, we've, I think he has
- 34:57watched two of the sidemen, but largely we've watched just the
- 34:59animated 2nd Doctor stuff. But.
- 35:01Have you seen any of it before? Because that music is so great.
- 35:04Well, that's the, that's the one I use for my, the theme tune for
- 35:08my podcast. That's the I've.
- 35:11I've nicked everything from that for that.
- 35:15Copyright be damned. You know the amount I use on
- 35:18this. Oh well.
- 35:19Can we please talk about this scene?
- 35:21Absolutely, because this is my relationship with my mother.
- 35:24I'm telling you now, sitting there at the table whilst my mum
- 35:27goes round and round and going well.
- 35:28You're never going to do anything if you don't get a good
- 35:30job or find a great man or I mean, this is so relatable, this
- 35:34stuff. Oh yeah, it really is.
- 35:36And I think she was. Jacqueline King was one of the
- 35:40sort of she her coming back in Star Beast I think was one of
- 35:44the best sort of comebacks as well that we had for for any
- 35:48character. But like because she's so
- 35:50hateable in this. Like, and have you met her?
- 35:54She's so nice. She's the most humbling.
- 35:57Woman in real life like. So lovely.
- 35:59So it's a hell of a performance because you're right, she's
- 36:02monstrous. Yeah, no, she's a, she's a very
- 36:04believable. Like, I feel like, yeah, I feel
- 36:06like he's got a thing about mum, doesn't he, Russell?
- 36:09He definitely doesn't. He's got a thing about mums who
- 36:11will kick the shit out of you. There's a great quote that he
- 36:14says about Sylvia and Donna in the writers town where he goes.
- 36:19It's like so many mother, daughters, relationships that I
- 36:21know where if they could only learn because they're formidable
- 36:25women, if they can only learn to work together, they would be
- 36:29unstoppable. But they just can't do it
- 36:32because they're mother and daughter.
- 36:34And it's kind of nice in the Starbeast actually, 4 rows.
- 36:38They have figured out how to work together.
- 36:40It's a really nice pay off. Yeah, no, it's, it's lovely that
- 36:43we got the the chance to have that come back because she's so,
- 36:46she's so unpleasant. She's so unpleasant in this.
- 36:49Burner crippings. I know it, it just melts my
- 36:52heart every time. It's just such a beautiful a
- 36:55beautiful. Soul a bit later on where the
- 36:58spaceship goes past him and he's got his back to it.
- 37:01Makes me die every time I see it.
- 37:03So this is, this is the bit where they've sort of got him in
- 37:06his little hat because we were trying to establish that he was
- 37:08the bloke that they talked to in Voyage of the Damned.
- 37:10Is that right? Because they've not really
- 37:12established he's not been in, he wasn't in Runaway Bride, was he?
- 37:15And then they just kind of went, fuck it, let's just make him my
- 37:17granddad. He's just.
- 37:20This is just beautiful. Character writing.
- 37:22Yeah. The bit where he goes about, you
- 37:24know, where's that girl that when we told her she couldn't go
- 37:27out and she got on a bust of strength client and fuck the
- 37:30rest of you, you know? It's wonderful.
- 37:33Like I totally buy, I believe all the relationships.
- 37:36He's gorgeous. Like, yeah, they just.
- 37:38It's such a believable family. And I think she plays it.
- 37:42Catherine Tate just plays it so real as well.
- 37:43Like she's just. I think that's one of the things
- 37:47with RTD 1 was just everybody felt like somebody you knew and
- 37:50even if you didn't like them, I think I know I've a lot of
- 37:52people have said about Camille Kaduri being sort of like was
- 37:56my. Mum, Joe.
- 37:57Yeah, I've met plenty of people who said if you knew her in real
- 38:00life, you might, you might not get on.
- 38:01But as a character, she's utterly brilliant and she's, you
- 38:06know, that bit. In Love and Monsters.
- 38:08You know where she flashes her knickers to Elton in the Yeah,
- 38:11my mum used to do that with a bloody dildo.
- 38:13People will come round the house and she'd go look at the girl.
- 38:16From that I'll be like, mother, please.
- 38:18Is it any wonder I'll turn down like this?
- 38:20No, no, I'm learning a lot. It's it's all starting to click
- 38:23into place now. She was an absolute terror.
- 38:26Honestly, I'll miss her dearly. Oh.
- 38:29Boy, but yeah, I just, I just, I can stop and just hang with
- 38:34these characters. Like it isn't always the way in
- 38:36the new series because there are lots of companions I just don't
- 38:39have a lot of time for. But even if nothing's happening
- 38:42and we just hang with Wilf and Donna and Sylvia, I think it's
- 38:46usually always gold. Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 38:49Flying on the wall in their house would be absolutely fine.
- 38:51Like, whereas I don't want to hang out with Clara.
- 38:54So you. Want to do other things to her
- 38:57but you don't want to hang out with?
- 38:59Her yeah, don't, don't speak afterwards, but just.
- 39:05Although we do forget to be the flaw on the wall in Turn Left
- 39:08and we you know when the whole world goes to hell and it's
- 39:10deeply uncomfortable. That's true.
- 39:12That is true. But now I love how long this
- 39:16scene goes on for as well. Like I know that a lot of people
- 39:18have said with the newer stuff, the pacing is so erratic and I
- 39:23just feel like it's this has just got time to breathe.
- 39:25Like we can just spend, like you say, we can hang out with these
- 39:27characters on the top of this hill and it could come longer.
- 39:31It is, you know, refiguring Donna to be a companion for a
- 39:36full series. I think you need space to this
- 39:39bit where he's in the TARDIS on his own.
- 39:41He's got no one to talk to. He's doing all the exposition,
- 39:44then realizes. Now that's interesting because I
- 39:47don't know where. Oh, you will have.
- 39:49Did you have the universe bit at the beginning?
- 39:51Because mine didn't. No, no, am IA bit ahead of you
- 39:54then. You might be, yeah.
- 39:56Are you still on the hill? I've just left the hill.
- 39:58Oh, OK, I'm going to go back 10 seconds.
- 40:00There we go. Are you in the TARDIS now?
- 40:02I'm in the TARDIS, He's he's looking, got a lovely shot of
- 40:04the door. Yeah, it pans right back.
- 40:07I think we're about in the same place now.
- 40:09Yeah, it just makes it look so massive and empty and crap.
- 40:12Know. About the conversation I had
- 40:14with Dylan Reece about you. Oh God.
- 40:16Yeah, I said Dylan. I said, you know, looking all my
- 40:20life for this Yorkshireman who come on to hamster a blunt pen
- 40:23knife, and when you find that person you just shout Dylan
- 40:27Rees, all right, just like Donna said in that scene.
- 40:30And look, here we are. Well, you know, some people
- 40:35would call it fate. I don't know that I'd be one of
- 40:38those people, but I'd, I'd like to, you know, I think we all end
- 40:41up where we're supposed to be in the end.
- 40:42It's a. Bit like, you know, towards the
- 40:44end of the season where they say, yeah, it's fate that the
- 40:46Doctor and Donna keep meeting. You know, I don't know where
- 40:49we're going to end up, Joe, but I can't wait to find out.
- 40:52I just hope one of us doesn't have our memories arranged for
- 40:5520 years, that's all. No, there's a few bits I could
- 40:58do. We're getting rid of actually.
- 40:59But the But if we wanted to make it very like the episode, we
- 41:04could have just spent the first sort of 2025 minutes of the
- 41:07episodes not speaking to each other and just doing separate
- 41:10things. Then.
- 41:12Bumping into each other later on.
- 41:14But I think we've we've, we've squandered that opportunity.
- 41:16They're about to meet now, aren't they?
- 41:18So. Oh, even this bit in a minute
- 41:20where she's in the loo and we've been introduced to Penny at the
- 41:24start, so we know there's a reporter that is looking into
- 41:28things that adipose industry and then the guards start punching.
- 41:31In all the Doors, you're like, oh, Donna, sorry, love.
- 41:33That's it. You're out of this episode now.
- 41:35And then, of course, there's Penny there in the toilet.
- 41:37No, it's gorgeous. It's so well done.
- 41:39I think you're ahead of me again.
- 41:40Are you potentially? I've just seen the.
- 41:42I'm just sort of going out into the corridor now with David
- 41:45Tennant. Oh, I'm in the lift with
- 41:46Catherine Tate. Am I still ahead?
- 41:48I don't know where you are now, maybe I think.
- 41:49So rare for me to be ahead of anyone.
- 41:51I'm in the loo. She's coming out of the loo.
- 41:55No, I'll go back 10 seconds again.
- 41:57Right. Are you in the loo?
- 41:58I am, yeah. She's.
- 41:59What are you? Doing in there.
- 42:01She's just stretching her neck. That's it, right?
- 42:03We're in the same place. She's she's come out, she's come
- 42:06out for a little look. We got out of sync twice in a
- 42:09couple of minutes, but here you go Timey.
- 42:11Why me? I know this is this is all
- 42:14probably still my fat's fault. Oh, where are you?
- 42:16I'm in church. What you doing there?
- 42:20Praying. Yeah, Oh my God, she's just
- 42:24fantastic. Oh, and this is what my mum
- 42:26would say to my uncle. Go on, get to the allotment, you
- 42:29know, get out of my hair. It's so real.
- 42:32Like Russell has been around strong.
- 42:34Women all his life, hasn't he? Clearly.
- 42:37And clearly also men who have retired and not know what the
- 42:40fuck to do with themselves. That's all of ours, isn't it?
- 42:43Like. Yeah, you, I think people, yeah,
- 42:46they end up being either one, one of those sorts of people who
- 42:49doesn't know what to do with themselves or finds themselves
- 42:52never like wondering how they ever have time to be at work.
- 42:55I can't help but confess this, but you see that guard on the
- 42:57left there? The ball one on the left?
- 43:00Yeah. With sort of the big machine gun
- 43:02in his hand. Yeah.
- 43:03Ohh. The thoughts I'm having right
- 43:05now. You know something about an
- 43:06armed man. Yeah, yeah, it's very, very,
- 43:09it's a very Russian looking black I.
- 43:11Thought I learned, you know, you'll, you'll discover the sort
- 43:13of things I'll like in blokes the more we do this and I shall
- 43:15learn the things you like in ladies, you know, get an
- 43:18education about each. Other well, you know, I go go a
- 43:21bit of both ways, so you know. Is that right?
- 43:23Well, there's hope for as yet, then.
- 43:25Isn't. It oh, sorry, you're married
- 43:26with children. Good grief.
- 43:28Just so, just so in seeds, you know.
- 43:29She ain't listening to this, is she?
- 43:31No, I doubt it. He didn't mean it.
- 43:33All right? Oh, boy.
- 43:37I knew this was going to be fun. Oh.
- 43:39What's happening now? Oh, are you getting exterior
- 43:41building? Literally just now, Yes.
- 43:44Oh. Thank goodness for that.
- 43:45We're still. In the same.
- 43:46Oh, this whole sequence with the cradle, right.
- 43:49That must have cost a bloody fortune.
- 43:50Yeah, that's proper. That's proper.
- 43:52That's oh, we'd have been talking about Disney money,
- 43:54weren't we? If we're.
- 43:56Wow, where is it? Although I did hear Russell
- 43:59saying that. You know the sequence where
- 44:02Sylvia is literally in the kitchen banging on at Donna and
- 44:06it keeps fading to different parts?
- 44:07Yeah, that cost a fortune. Because I have to film.
- 44:10Do so many setups for that to make it work.
- 44:13Yeah, No, I can, I can imagine. To be fair.
- 44:15It's that's the thing. I that's the thing.
- 44:17I always am very. One of the things I like about
- 44:21Doctor Who fund them is just the the sheer amount of stuff you
- 44:23sort of pick up about Tele production and there's still
- 44:25absolutely loads I don't understand I.
- 44:27Pretend I know about it, but really I'm ignorant.
- 44:30Well, that's, well then you're passing that on to me because
- 44:33I've got no idea at all. And I just listened to you guys
- 44:35going. I'm so sorry.
- 44:36What Knowledgeable, interesting chaps.
- 44:38I mean, occasionally our people are Dylan REIT on, you know,
- 44:40they're working TV, but unfortunately his critical
- 44:43opinions are so bad that it renders that information
- 44:46irrelevant. And here we go.
- 44:49The spark of life holding up the capsule.
- 44:51Yeah. And then she pulls the out.
- 44:53Of the drawer and she. Yeah, like it's like holding up
- 44:57a kitten by its neck and going here we go.
- 45:00Yeah, oh man. It's now as a comedy fan, yeah.
- 45:04How does this seem fair, you know?
- 45:06This is this is never bad, Is it really?
- 45:09Like it's just such a it's just perfect.
- 45:13Like there's nothing wrong with this at all.
- 45:15Like I. Believe they had libbed it.
- 45:18I don't know if I believe that, but I can.
- 45:20I can, I can believe it. I can believe it with Catherine
- 45:22Tate. I suppose they've got that.
- 45:23They've got that instant chemistry, haven't they?
- 45:26Now, do you know what I think we've.
- 45:27I don't want to spend the whole time but she's only.
- 45:30Just think again. She's only just got the adipose
- 45:32out of the draw for me. Yeah.
- 45:33Oh no, for me too, don't worry. Oh, OK, that's fine.
- 45:36We're we're sort of in the same place, don't worry.
- 45:39We're getting there, We're getting there.
- 45:41I mean. I have heard people say, you
- 45:44know. Murray Murray's.
- 45:45Comedy, music, especially in scenes like this, it's all a bit
- 45:48mannered, but I don't care. It's.
- 45:51Now I, it was one of those the Murray Gold criticism again,
- 45:54because I've only got into sort of the wider fund and more
- 45:57recently I never knew that people didn't like his music.
- 46:01And I can sort of see it going back and knowing that people
- 46:04feel that way. I can kind of see it, but.
- 46:06Mad people though, don't worry about those.
- 46:08Yeah, exactly. I think certainly in this
- 46:10episode I have. It's just perfect, like.
- 46:14This now it's like over the top. Yeah, that's one of my favorite
- 46:21bits, I think. Favorite music cues from this?
- 46:23But can I can Ioffer an opinion you might not like, because
- 46:27we've established that you're quite a big Moffett fan is I
- 46:30just don't think Moffett captures this sort of
- 46:33entertainment in the way that I think RTD understands Saturday
- 46:37night television for a family audience.
- 46:40And he'll deliver this madness, fat people, mime, comedy
- 46:43sequences and things like this, you know, and Muffy will deliver
- 46:46something like The Impossible Astronaut, where a child is
- 46:50murdered in the cliffhanger. You know, it's like, OK, and
- 46:54it's an alternative way of telling Doctor Who.
- 46:55And I absolutely get that. But.
- 46:58I don't know, I just feel there's a time and a place for
- 47:00killing children and it ain't in your season opener.
- 47:03No, I think that's probably reasonable.
- 47:05I think it's, again, I don't think I would have thought about
- 47:08it too critically. I don't know that my critical
- 47:11faculties are like I, I don't want to sort of just repeat
- 47:14everything I said on on too hot for TV, but I'm very much one of
- 47:17those guys that. It's all.
- 47:19Right. No one listens to that, don't
- 47:20worry. Well, that's the thing.
- 47:22It's a broader audience now. I don't.
- 47:26Know, but the, I, I think it's, I'm very much one of those guys
- 47:30that I'm very happy as long as the, as long as my guys are on
- 47:33the telly, I'm not really that bothered about what they're
- 47:34doing. So I find it very difficult to
- 47:36be, you know, too critical. I, I try to think about it now
- 47:39and I know when I've liked something.
- 47:40Well, I'm not, but it's, you know, I'm very rarely sitting
- 47:45there going, I'm very rarely fogging at the mouth about it.
- 47:47Do you know what I mean? I've created with hamster, Yeah,
- 47:50I've created like 49 gigs worth of podcasting.
- 47:52I've got to say something, you know, as I'm approaching 50
- 47:56gigs. Yeah.
- 47:58Oh, they're together again. Now come on, you said you're
- 48:01hanging with you guys. Now you're hanging with you
- 48:04guys. Yeah, in a moment.
- 48:05Literally. Yes, she hangs on to that for
- 48:10ages. I would have.
- 48:11Long let go. And well, that's I always think
- 48:14that. I always think I'd have been a
- 48:15terrible companion because I'd definitely have been dead within
- 48:175 minutes. There's just no way.
- 48:18To no, fuck that. Have you seen what they go for?
- 48:21I'd have gone for one adventure and gone now.
- 48:22You're right, I'll be out with my books.
- 48:25Yeah, yeah, I definitely. There's a bit of the Teegan
- 48:26about me. I'd have been like, no, thank
- 48:28you. We'd go back to the TARDIS,
- 48:30please. Yeah, yeah.
- 48:32I was just like. The danger would follow you
- 48:35there though, you know, You hang out and it's just the doctor,
- 48:37man. He's bad news.
- 48:38He's a bad omen. Yeah.
- 48:41Well look, they start off here having jolly jokes with fat
- 48:43people and they end up with the ultimate bomb made out of 100
- 48:48planets. Well, you know, like I say, it's
- 48:51got to escalate. That is the that's the one thing
- 48:53I think with with with any of the new series stuff, to be
- 48:55honest. All of the, it all ends up with
- 48:57so many, like the planet's in danger, the universe is in
- 49:00danger and it's like, I don't care.
- 49:03I'm over, I'm over. It goes to a scale where you're
- 49:05like, OK, what am I supposed to think about that?
- 49:07Yeah, like how am I supposed to care anymore?
- 49:09So it's the people really, isn't it?
- 49:10And those finales that you. Yeah, absolutely.
- 49:13When, when her memories ripped away, I mean, I was devastated
- 49:16watching because I've had such a great year with her and she'd
- 49:18grown so much. So I was like, Russell, you're a
- 49:21bastard, you know, how could you do that to her?
- 49:24It's a, it's a cruel, it's a cruel, cruel thing to do.
- 49:28Well, you've watched this bit where they're silently smashing
- 49:31hammers on the windows and. They can't get.
- 49:34It I know. It's ridiculous.
- 49:37They are like cartoon characters, aren't they in this
- 49:39one? Yeah, it's just, I think that's
- 49:42why tenants so much at his best with her, because they're just,
- 49:46I don't know, I can't put into words that chemistry is just
- 49:48gorgeous. I'll tell you what it is.
- 49:50It's Evelyn Smythe and the Sick Doctor.
- 49:53Yeah, the Sick Doctor shits all over his companions.
- 49:56And then someone comes along who goes no, no, no, that ain't on.
- 50:00And you certainly ain't treating me like that.
- 50:02And you're not going to be like that when we have these
- 50:03adventures. And as a result, they soften a
- 50:06bit. Yeah.
- 50:07I think that's probably. Yeah, sort of like he's, he's
- 50:13sew up himself with with Rose and Martha and he she's just not
- 50:18having it. What I love about Donna is you
- 50:21get the boisterous Donna, obviously you do.
- 50:23It's Catherine Tate. You get the shouty Donna who
- 50:26tries to control the room or or certainly be the loudest person
- 50:29in the room. But to give her a nuance, she
- 50:33also has a really low opinion of herself and will say, you know,
- 50:36I'm just a secretary. I'm nothing, I'm nobody, you
- 50:39know, And it's a really interesting mix of.
- 50:42Yeah, well, that's she's that's she's really the every woman.
- 50:45And she like, we all feel like that sometimes we all feel like,
- 50:48oh, I'm just a, I'm just a like. You know what?
- 50:51Do you think I'll say I'll just put bread on a shelf?
- 50:53Well. Yeah, try and stay humble.
- 50:56Well, but I feel that the same way, like anytime I'm speaking
- 51:00to any, you know, I'm just a healthcare assistant, I'm just a
- 51:02receptionist and I'm like, well, look, we all have the cogs all
- 51:05still need to be in place for everything to keep turning, man.
- 51:07I'm not going to say how you described your job earlier, but
- 51:09it was the best single description of any job I've ever
- 51:12heard. All right.
- 51:13Well, I'm happy to share it again.
- 51:16I've photographed bum holes for a living.
- 51:21Oh I just want to see the nice ones though, not the horrible
- 51:24ones. Yeah, I suppose you're not
- 51:25allowed to enjoy it though, are you?
- 51:27I was just be a professional. No, it's a, it's a very tricky,
- 51:30it's a tricky line to walk because you know, somebody's a
- 51:32bit reticent about it. You don't want to go in too
- 51:34hard, like, oh go on, go on. Back.
- 51:39Show us, please. Oh God, you haven't wiped.
- 51:43Jesus Christ, how did we get here?
- 51:46No. People are used to it.
- 51:47They are used to it by now. Oh, and this?
- 51:50Where he helps her down and. She goes just always like this
- 51:53with you, isn't it? He's like, Oh yes.
- 51:55And then she's got a massive grin on.
- 51:56Her face, it's just that's that's where that smile is just
- 52:00infectious. And then we get the a great face
- 52:03off. Now she's so unimpressed.
- 52:07Sarah Lancaster, look at her. Yeah.
- 52:12Oh I love all this stuff. It just makes me feel happy this
- 52:15episode. Yeah, no, you just.
- 52:18Oh man, energy, witty lines, great interactions.
- 52:22Like I don't want every Doctor episode to be like this but to
- 52:26kick start a year. I do wonder, I think I wonder if
- 52:29that's why we're never happy as fans because it's just, it's so
- 52:32varied. So nothing can ever be just for
- 52:34you and no one's ever. There's no consistent, like
- 52:38there's no consistent overall tone to the show.
- 52:41It changes so much on to. Like, you know, the idea that
- 52:45you can go anywhere and do anything and cover any genre, it
- 52:48just, it means there's going to be times where it really isn't
- 52:51for you. Yeah.
- 52:51Yeah. Because there's stuff.
- 52:53That we all don't like. Yeah, but it's funny, like all
- 52:57the stuff. It's the stuff.
- 52:58It's like I think I said to you before this, it's always the
- 53:01stuff that I don't particularly that I'm not particularly
- 53:03bothered about that. I always want to go back and
- 53:04rewatch because I think, well someone likes this so why don't
- 53:07I? I find that I do this.
- 53:09I find it fascinating. It's like it's always good then
- 53:11to have another voice on a podcast that you're doing of
- 53:16with the completely the opposite view.
- 53:18And then you usually meet somewhere in the middle.
- 53:20They will see a little bit of what you're saying.
- 53:21You'll see a little bit of what they're saying.
- 53:23And and nine times out of 10, the rebel flesh and the also
- 53:27people was a complete failure on Dave Rennie's part.
- 53:30But nine times out of 10, you'll see something to like that you
- 53:34didn't see before. Yeah.
- 53:35So again, I quite, I enjoyed that one it when it came out,
- 53:37but I've got no memory of it now.
- 53:39Do you know what I mean? It's hard to go back into it
- 53:41with baggage, whereas your. Name is mad.
- 53:44Remember that is true. It's in your name.
- 53:46Yeah, but I gave myself that name.
- 53:48And if you. Well, you were right.
- 53:53Yeah, now I look at him. That fellow, the bald one on the
- 53:55left, the cute 1. He only looks about 12, doesn't
- 53:57he? How did he get that job there?
- 53:59It's cheekbones in it, that's what it is.
- 54:01Yes. No, I've hired people for less,
- 54:04you know? Just on that subject, I suppose,
- 54:07but just going back to the almost people, I've got a real
- 54:09soft spot for Sarah. Is it Sarah Smart who played the
- 54:13one of the main gangers in that or one of the main ones?
- 54:16I think that's. The name, anyway, not the evil
- 54:18one that Rory likes. Maybe.
- 54:20But they're really. Oh no, I thought the.
- 54:22Little one with the Banks, because have you ever seen that
- 54:24there's a show? Have you ever seen a show called
- 54:25Funland with Chris, with erstwhile Doctor Who, Chris
- 54:29Marshall and Oh no. And there's a variety.
- 54:34It's a it's a really black. It's really black.
- 54:36It's written by Jeremy Dyson from The League of Gentlemen and
- 54:39it's it's like a really sort of weird dark comedy set in
- 54:42Blackpool. It's fantastic.
- 54:44We should watch it. But she's very good in that.
- 54:46So I was very sort of kindly disposed to her when she was in
- 54:49Doctor Who. So I think that's one of the
- 54:51reasons I was that. Shitty CGI.
- 54:54You know when her mouth goes massive or her heads on the
- 54:57stalk. I mean, they're supposed to be
- 54:59scary, but it's bloody comical. It's more comical than this.
- 55:02Yeah, oh, look at this. And she opens up the cupboard
- 55:06and she's got that fucking alien tech there.
- 55:09It's ridiculous. The same office building as
- 55:12Kevin Stoney in the Invasion. It might be it.
- 55:16Might just be on the. Yeah, it might have just been on
- 55:19the the next 4-UP. Imagine who would just.
- 55:23Electrocute 2 men there. Potentially.
- 55:26I think I will. Yeah, I think.
- 55:28I'll mind you, last time we met, Donnery murdered a load of
- 55:31spider kids, didn't he? He's he's known for it.
- 55:33Well, it's it was, it was only, yeah, it was only watching this
- 55:36again not that long ago, like when I watched it, it sort of to
- 55:39refresh myself. It was only when he said
- 55:42something about towards the end when he said something about
- 55:44their only kids. And she goes, oh, that's changed
- 55:46from last time. And I've never picked up on that
- 55:49line before, but you know. People will say that Catherine
- 55:53Tate is not giving a great performance in The Runaway
- 55:55Bride. I just won't hear it.
- 55:56I think at the start she's doing her usual Catherine Tate shtick
- 56:00of just screaming her head off and that's a deliberate choice.
- 56:03By the end, when she's on that snowy St. and she's saying to
- 56:07him, you know, oh I don't know, you scare me to death, I can't
- 56:09go with you. It's wonderful.
- 56:13No, she's, she's brilliant. She's she was a real maybe the I
- 56:18mean, again, I don't know, I don't know actors.
- 56:20And certainly at the time this was going out, it wouldn't have
- 56:21been something I was especially aware of.
- 56:24So. But she's probably one of the
- 56:26biggest revelations of the whole, oh, revival.
- 56:30For sure. Well, even I was a bit unsure,
- 56:32and I love the Catherine Tate show, but I was like, yeah, but
- 56:34they're all sort of OneNote stereotype characters.
- 56:36Yeah, exactly. None of it's particularly deep,
- 56:38is it? No.
- 56:39And yet I think in her best moments, in this silence and
- 56:43library, Forest of the Dead turn left, you know?
- 56:46And parts of the two-part finale, God, it's some of the
- 56:49best acting we've ever seen. Yeah, now she's.
- 56:53It's what JNT said about like, Patricia Routledge and people
- 56:56like that. It's the people that say that
- 56:57comedy actors can't do dramatic acting because comedy acting is
- 57:01harder than dramatic acting. I would say yeah.
- 57:04And I think pretty much any any of the comedians that have come
- 57:07in, I think John Bishop was amazing, Bradley Walsh
- 57:09fantastic, like every single one of the the sort of the comics
- 57:13evenly Mack in it's it's a small role, isn't it?
- 57:16But you know, he's fantastic in that.
- 57:18And I think comics have AI think a better understanding of I
- 57:23think, you know, an actor turned comic is definitely less good
- 57:26than a comic turned actor. There's a general role actors
- 57:30trying to do comedy. Oh.
- 57:31You've seen John Levine doing comedy, have you?
- 57:34I've not had the pleasure, but I've had.
- 57:36Painful. Yeah, I've heard.
- 57:39But John Bishop with that walk. It's Walk the Suntar.
- 57:43I had to. I had to rewatch Legend of the
- 57:45Sea Devils yesterday because my son's a big fan so he likes I.
- 57:48Really like your the more I'm hearing about your son, he
- 57:51sounds like he's got great taste.
- 57:52He's a, he's a, he's a lovely boy.
- 57:54He likes basically he likes lizards and things with tails.
- 57:57So you run out very quickly and has.
- 58:01Got things going for it. I swear to God it's not perfect.
- 58:04It's far from perfect, but I'll look at this.
- 58:08Literally the back fat is walking away.
- 58:11Yeah, it's it's a very disturbing scene in it.
- 58:14She reminds me of the Friend. Reminds me of was it one of the
- 58:18ones? Is it who is it in James and the
- 58:21Giant Peach? Is it Mary in Margulies?
- 58:23Oh yeah, she doesn't like Mary Margulies.
- 58:27That's your favorite beep? The beep.
- 58:29Yeah, yeah. Oh, but I do you know what I
- 58:31still think even though you can sort a tail now, the special
- 58:35effects of all of the adipose in the street, because they're all
- 58:38doing different things. Yeah, no, it must have taken
- 58:41hours. It's.
- 58:41The same tech that they used for Lord of the Rings, you know,
- 58:45where they gave all the orcs, You know, you program it in and
- 58:48they say, right, give each version of this and you get the
- 58:50silverware, something different to do.
- 58:52And then the computer program does the rest, which is why,
- 58:55look, they're all walking in different directions.
- 58:57Their arms are waving about. And I mean the one who slides
- 59:00the taxis. Well, it's the it's the one with
- 59:02the, the taxi runs them over. I always feel awful about that.
- 59:05That made me feel really sad. The other.
- 59:06Day. I think you just sort of bounced
- 59:08off, you know? Yeah, I hope so.
- 59:11The one who falls down, the taxi goes.
- 59:15They're just gorgeous. I mean, now I want to see a
- 59:17version of Lord of the Rings with Adipose instead of orcs.
- 59:19I feel like that would be a much better.
- 59:21I imagine the action sequences. All of them getting on top of
- 59:24each other. Just attack, yeah.
- 59:27Or one of those Star Wars battles, you know?
- 59:29But we've added powers. What?
- 59:30Was it, is it Last Jedi where they replaced all of the puffins
- 59:33on that island with pogs? Is that what they're called?
- 59:38That was a thing. So yeah, there was so many
- 59:39puffins on the island that they couldn't actually get rid of
- 59:41them or digitally remove them, so they just replaced them with
- 59:43fucking. I'm not a big Star Wars fan.
- 59:46I fucking loved The Last Jedi. I thought that was an
- 59:48incredible. Yeah, likewise the.
- 59:50Yeah, it was easily my favorite of of these *.
- 59:53Wars fans, you don't know when you're I'm not.
- 59:55AI see well for me, I'm not a particular Star Wars fan either.
- 59:57I gave up on it a little while ago to.
- 59:59Just I wasn't talking to you. I'll insult you on the call.
- 1:00:01I was talking to let them out there, you know, listening.
- 1:00:04My brothers are with Star Wars the same way I am about Doctor
- 1:00:07Who, Which is challenging because I want to send them, you
- 1:00:11know, I want to send them the Doctor Who memes.
- 1:00:12And they're like, they're constantly chatting about what
- 1:00:14the clone was. And I'm actually, I'm just like,
- 1:00:16I don't care. Oh.
- 1:00:17Send them to me. You know, I think we're, we're
- 1:00:20meme swappers now, you and me. I should hope so.
- 1:00:22I hope. So this is great.
- 1:00:25I need a second capture. It's some shitty technobabble,
- 1:00:28but of course she's got the pendant there, so she provides
- 1:00:31the solution and then you get the shot of coming back from the
- 1:00:34two of them. It's that weird pull in and pull
- 1:00:37out shot. It's like the jaw shot, isn't
- 1:00:40it? Of yeah, it's it.
- 1:00:41I can't know what it's called. Someone did tell me once what it
- 1:00:43was called as a as a shot, but it's just.
- 1:00:45Is it that it zooms in but you? Zoom where you come out.
- 1:00:49Yeah, I think that's right. You zoom in and pull the camera
- 1:00:51backwards as you can, or the other way around.
- 1:00:53It's a great. Effect.
- 1:00:54And it's just like, yeah, there's the two of them.
- 1:00:56That's the team, yeah, working together.
- 1:00:58I think what I really like about as well about that shot is that
- 1:01:00it's not particularly smooth. Like you can see where the
- 1:01:02cameras kind of juggled a bit while they've done it and it
- 1:01:04just. Well, that's Doctor and I were
- 1:01:05in it a bit rickety. Yeah, that's one of the reasons
- 1:01:08I love it, man. It's just.
- 1:01:11Did you love the bit of she goes?
- 1:01:13What's happened? I think the doctor happened just
- 1:01:18every line, she says. She was.
- 1:01:22She's just so much. I mean, I'm big on camp and I
- 1:01:24get if you don't like camp then this probably wouldn't be for
- 1:01:28you. I don't know.
- 1:01:31I I think maybe I can't believe though that people are getting
- 1:01:35this far into Doctor Who. Would not appreciate a bit of
- 1:01:37that. Well, yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:39Well, precisely. It's too late now.
- 1:01:41It's too late, so people. Just say Doctor Toby Haddock.
- 1:01:44If you're listening, you know Doctor Who's a serious thing.
- 1:01:46It is not. Unfortunately, even the most
- 1:01:50serious story has enormous giant clams that eat people in it.
- 1:01:54Yeah. Do you think?
- 1:01:55That's a great designer spaceship, don't you think?
- 1:01:57Like close Encounters of the Third Kind.
- 1:02:00Yeah, proper classic. Proper classic.
- 1:02:02You know, like I said, if you're going to do a big camp, big camp
- 1:02:05story, big arch villain. What's the sort of huge arm or
- 1:02:09claw thing on the top there? Did you see it?
- 1:02:11No, I didn't though. I think I'm going to wait a
- 1:02:13minute because I haven't got that far.
- 1:02:17How will we out sync again? I don't know, are you watching?
- 1:02:20Playing at half. Speed.
- 1:02:22I don't know, normally I watch them at double so I'm not
- 1:02:25watching them. I would never watch these at
- 1:02:26double S2. It's it's horrible and there's
- 1:02:28wealth sitting on his hill with his missing it completely.
- 1:02:32Oh, thank you for the visual clue.
- 1:02:33I've gone back to it. You're an expert.
- 1:02:37At this now had we better go to the roof, you know, and make a
- 1:02:41joke about waving at fat. Yeah, well, it's getting there.
- 1:02:46Can you sort of, you know, with your kids now?
- 1:02:48Can you say to them, Oh my children?
- 1:02:52I'm calling you to bed. Oh.
- 1:02:55God getting to bed is the It's just not a thing.
- 1:03:00Oh, see, I was the great babysitter for all of my nieces
- 1:03:02because I used to be able to bribe them with all sorts, you
- 1:03:05know, and I always followed through, you know, gave them the
- 1:03:08treats and the sweets and all that the next day.
- 1:03:10But you know, parents don't really promise those sort of
- 1:03:12things because I'll be able to give them back after they'd had
- 1:03:15the sweets and they'd be a little horrors.
- 1:03:17Yeah, that's the I came to the conclusion.
- 1:03:21Well, I was told by my wife that I had to come to the conclusion
- 1:03:23that it was not appropriate to give him a Jelly tot every time
- 1:03:25he did a question of his homework.
- 1:03:27I thought it was a perfectly good system, but apparently.
- 1:03:29She's told they're very small. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:03:31I thought so. I thought it was a.
- 1:03:32Sensible, full of sugar, makes the medicine go down.
- 1:03:35Yeah, but slowly deteriorates the ability to concentrate while
- 1:03:38you get while you get done with your maths.
- 1:03:40Have you ever watched many cartoons, Joe?
- 1:03:43Good for you. Good.
- 1:03:44For you, the bit here where she looks down and does the comedy
- 1:03:48double take and then falls to her death, I mean, it's a bit
- 1:03:50like Looney Tunes, isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:03:52Oh, it's gorgeous. I feel like she needed a little
- 1:03:54sign that was just said like well.
- 1:03:57Marwick Gold can't resist. Go.
- 1:04:02Oh boy, no, but. Again, again, I can imagine
- 1:04:06those people that like, you know, I'm going to pull
- 1:04:08something out of my arse now. Heaven sent, you know, that
- 1:04:10boring old man walking around a castle for a million billion
- 1:04:13years. If you like that sort of thing,
- 1:04:15maybe this might not be for you, but.
- 1:04:17Isn't it I just I? It's just so wonderful.
- 1:04:19That's the same show I like I. I know, it's crazy.
- 1:04:23Like you just it just you can't get to.
- 1:04:27There isn't a show that does this so tonally inconsistent and
- 1:04:31that's its strength. Oh, come on, that is Camp her
- 1:04:34hanging there in the air. In that light, if I never see
- 1:04:38you again, it'll be too soon. Yeah, that's gorgeous.
- 1:04:43I just wonderful. Yeah, sorry.
- 1:04:46I feel like the I feel like I see your point now when you were
- 1:04:48saying about sometimes the more fun ones are where we where
- 1:04:50you've bought horns a little bit because I am, I'm fully just
- 1:04:54loving this and it's hard to. I can't think of anything to
- 1:04:56say. I think I said to you before,
- 1:04:58all I can think of to say is God.
- 1:04:59It's got no in it. Well, that's great.
- 1:05:01No, I mean, people love a bit of confirmation bias.
- 1:05:04You know, if we just sat here going this seems wonderful Man,
- 1:05:08the amount of people that would listen to this.
- 1:05:10Yeah. Although it is good to have a
- 1:05:13route as well, you know like to really disagree on things.
- 1:05:18Look at the adipose waving in front of the window.
- 1:05:19See ya, it's been fun. Oh boy, oh boy, I love.
- 1:05:25That spaceship, why didn't they market that?
- 1:05:28I don't know this is the there must be someone doing the the
- 1:05:31all that 3D printed tap. There must be someone who's
- 1:05:34who's doing the Alice Bose spaceship, surely?
- 1:05:36I know we've been a bit of reverend, but may I ask you a
- 1:05:38serious question now? Of course.
- 1:05:40OK, So what was a greater shock to you?
- 1:05:44Was it the return of Rose Tyler in the scene, or the dramatic
- 1:05:50dental work that she'd had since the last time we saw her?
- 1:05:54Well, as a speaking as a not very observant person, I know
- 1:05:58that I've said before about, you know, I, I, I do love a, a good
- 1:06:01set of ashes, but the, I, I think at the time it would have
- 1:06:05been very much Billy Piper's the.
- 1:06:08The biggest shock? Oh huge.
- 1:06:10Yeah. If it comes, turn left.
- 1:06:11We all saw those gnashes. So Bunny idiots.
- 1:06:15The scream. Yeah.
- 1:06:17And I love Turner. Turner's my.
- 1:06:19Favorite new series episode of all time?
- 1:06:21But yeah. Oh, look at this Planet of the
- 1:06:23Hats. Reggie.
- 1:06:28Who has their? Car literally full of luggage
- 1:06:31just in case the doctor drops by.
- 1:06:33I said I used to work with the nurse who kept a bag under a bed
- 1:06:37just in case of a nuclear Holocaust.
- 1:06:39Is that right? Yeah.
- 1:06:41I mean, I don't think she's got the wrong idea given politically
- 1:06:44where we are right now. Well yeah, to be fair, I bet
- 1:06:47she's feeling pretty smuggled. She knows that fingers hovering
- 1:06:52over the button all the time. Oh, this is gorgeous.
- 1:06:57I wish she now she thinks she's not wanted and she just
- 1:07:01crumbles. She's she was all sort of full
- 1:07:03of energy, so excited. And now she thinks like every
- 1:07:06man in her life, she's not wanted.
- 1:07:09And God who can't, Who doesn't recognise that?
- 1:07:12Yeah. Oh, no.
- 1:07:13It's just, it's such a like her disappointment.
- 1:07:18She's just like, it's just her eyes, man.
- 1:07:20You can see it in her eyes how well she plays it.
- 1:07:22And he's just, and you just understand his reticence to, to
- 1:07:27take her with him. He's just, they just play it so
- 1:07:30beautifully. And then as well, I think
- 1:07:31there's about when he smiles, when, when he realises, like
- 1:07:35when he realises they're on the same wavelength about it.
- 1:07:38And I feel like that smile that he gives her.
- 1:07:40Well, at least he's learning because he's put Martha through
- 1:07:43the year of hell, hasn't he? But she still remembers, and her
- 1:07:46family will being tortured and all of that.
- 1:07:47So he's like, I don't want you to go through this.
- 1:07:49So he's actually right, because eventually she does go through
- 1:07:53hell. Yeah, well, that's true, but not
- 1:07:55because she fancied him. And that was the key thing.
- 1:07:57He was worried. About so refreshing, isn't it?
- 1:07:59Yeah, I would say the opposite of you, though.
- 1:08:02You know, she said to him, you know, you just want to mate.
- 1:08:04You ain't mate with me, Sunshine.
- 1:08:06I would say to you at the end of the episode, Joe McLachlan, you
- 1:08:10just want to be mates. Well, we're not just being
- 1:08:13friends, Sunshine. All right, Sorry.
- 1:08:16That was a terrible joke. I'm so sorry.
- 1:08:18That's a fact. It took you a while, didn't it?
- 1:08:20We got there in the end, though. But no, he's.
- 1:08:23He's thank you for almost laughing.
- 1:08:25That's I tried the it's his but yeah, his delight at being able
- 1:08:32to take he he's just like right. We're on the same page.
- 1:08:34It's all good. You can come.
- 1:08:36I just. I mean, imagine leaving New York
- 1:08:38keys in a bin. Yeah, that's AI always feel very
- 1:08:43dodgy. I've got my car in at the garage
- 1:08:44on Thursday and they usually leave them on the on the front
- 1:08:47wheel. They leave them under the
- 1:08:48really. Yeah, just in there because I I
- 1:08:52can never get it while I'm working or I can never get off
- 1:08:55work or whatever. But recently I've only just been
- 1:08:57trusted with keys again in my house because I always lose
- 1:09:00them. Last time I lost the entire coat
- 1:09:02with the key in it. Oh crap, so.
- 1:09:03Now he started secreting keys all around the fucking garden
- 1:09:06jar. I mean, they're in all sorts of
- 1:09:08weird traps and things. Like I can't even find the
- 1:09:11bloody things. You've got just a metal detector
- 1:09:13by the back door, so you can. Fake dog poos and all sorts.
- 1:09:17I'm not rummaging through that to get my key.
- 1:09:18Thank you very much. I know there's always the
- 1:09:20concern that you'll get a a real 1.
- 1:09:23How could I be talking about fake dog poos when Billie
- 1:09:25Piper's on the screen? I'm so sorry.
- 1:09:28That's OK, like I say, my analytical powers are not great,
- 1:09:30but when we form the talk about plastic dog poo, I've got a
- 1:09:32couple of great stories so. Excuse me, I should be the judge
- 1:09:35of whether your analytical powers are good or not.
- 1:09:38You've been fabulous. Well, I choosing to believe you.
- 1:09:43Doesn't like a compliment? OK, notice most men are very.
- 1:09:48Awkward when you throw out a compliment including me.
- 1:09:51Yeah, I will be. I'll be thinking about it later
- 1:09:53though. I'll be having a lovely time
- 1:09:54going. She was very nice.
- 1:09:57Well, yeah, please bank them all.
- 1:09:59Bank them all for later. This bit I this is one of my
- 1:10:02favourite endings to a new her episode where they give Will the
- 1:10:06gift of seeing her in the TARDIS, waving away her.
- 1:10:10And he's just so happy, isn't he?
- 1:10:12Yeah, no, it's it and it again, it's so.
- 1:10:16I don't know, man. He's just perfect.
- 1:10:20That like it's just full on tears in his eyes.
- 1:10:22And I think, you know, obviously the relationship you would go on
- 1:10:25to have with Wilf and the doctor is just.
- 1:10:27They got so lucky, didn't they? Like, I know, I know it's
- 1:10:30through circumstances because the guy who played Donna's
- 1:10:33father died or was dying, so they had to bring in somebody
- 1:10:36else. And and, you know, I think he
- 1:10:38would have been great Howard Atfield in this role, but but
- 1:10:43Cribbins is just Cribbins. He's everyone's granddad.
- 1:10:46Isn't. It no, exactly it was it was a
- 1:10:48loss we all felt in a way that just, you know, and.
- 1:10:51Just that idea, right? The, the dynamic idea of he's
- 1:10:56always long to go out to the stars, but he's too old to do it
- 1:10:59now. And and his granddaughter gets
- 1:11:03to go out into the stars and he's not jealous.
- 1:11:05He's so happy for her. So the bit where she comes back
- 1:11:08in the Sontaran 2 party, you know, he sees her on the road
- 1:11:12and he's like, no, go and get out there and bring back a bit
- 1:11:14of the stars for me, you know? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:17There's just no, it's, it's the way I wished.
- 1:11:19I think it's the way I think we all wish we could be about our
- 1:11:22friends. There's no jealousy.
- 1:11:23There's no, I know they're not friends, but like he's just,
- 1:11:27yeah, he's just so happy for her.
- 1:11:29I'm. Terrible.
- 1:11:30I'm the worst green eyed monster you're ever going to make people
- 1:11:34give me great news. Oh my God, I'm going to do this.
- 1:11:37You're what? You bastard.
- 1:11:39Yeah. Well, look now.
- 1:11:42What I've got to do is after that just a live episode is now
- 1:11:47it hit you with a few questions from hand fam, if that's OK, Of
- 1:11:50course. Yeah, you know, it's the usual
- 1:11:52welcome that they they come up with these fucking terrible
- 1:11:54questions for you to answer. So Are you ready?
- 1:11:59As ready as I'll ever be, yeah. So the fanfare himself, Big
- 1:12:02Orange Michael, someone else who goes under a pseudonym like you.
- 1:12:07Oh, he's got no questions. He just says no questions.
- 1:12:10Good luck to him. I'm sure he'll be brilliant.
- 1:12:13Well, that's very kind of him to say.
- 1:12:15He was big orange, Michael. He was brilliant.
- 1:12:17We were talking about tours within 10 minutes.
- 1:12:19It was wonderful. Lucy McCall says, Oh no, that's
- 1:12:25Pfizer Pompeii. But she does say welcome.
- 1:12:27So I'll just say that for now. Hello, Lucy.
- 1:12:30John Arnold says hello and welcome.
- 1:12:33Does Tennant's Doctor having a companion who clearly enjoys his
- 1:12:37company but happily calls him out on his bullshit mean this is
- 1:12:40the only season where his version of the character
- 1:12:43properly works? I think I'm inclined to agree
- 1:12:46with that. Yeah.
- 1:12:47I think we've, we've kind of touched on that already, but the
- 1:12:49fact that she's not she's not trying to shag him is a huge
- 1:12:53benefit to the the team. There's no moping about this.
- 1:12:56Just he's never allowed to get too big for his boots.
- 1:13:00He just, she's just the exact right foil for Tennant's Doctor
- 1:13:05because he's there's just, there's no room for him to
- 1:13:10outgrow himself. And he can in the same way, I
- 1:13:13guess, you know, like with anyone, when I don't know what,
- 1:13:18I don't know what it was because I never felt with Eccleston and
- 1:13:20Piper that he was grandstanding in the same way that Tennant
- 1:13:23seems to be in that second series.
- 1:13:27And then. But it always just feels like he
- 1:13:28wants everyone to be very, very impressed with him.
- 1:13:31And I just feel like he was. Nervous performance wise, I
- 1:13:34mean, I still think he gives some great performances in that
- 1:13:36second year, but you can know the episodes where he's a bit
- 1:13:40unsure with what he's being asked to do come three.
- 1:13:43I think he's comfortable and there's there's sort of he
- 1:13:45levels out a bit, but he does shout and go on a lot in too,
- 1:13:49doesn't he? Yeah, now I think he's this is
- 1:13:52where he really settles into himself and it's, she's just
- 1:13:55great. Well, our Daniel Rawlsley.
- 1:13:58Lovely. Daniel Rawlsley asks.
- 1:14:01Rusty Davies has always brought an eclectic mix of darkness,
- 1:14:04confidence and fun to each of his series openers and partners
- 1:14:08is arguably the most refined of all.
- 1:14:11What is it about that approach that works so well?
- 1:14:14It's not mastermind. This isn't it it.
- 1:14:16Is. I don't know if I have got a
- 1:14:17proper answer for that, but I I know for a fact, like I think
- 1:14:22it's it just feels like I think maybe it's the practice, to be
- 1:14:26honest. It's the fact that he's had
- 1:14:28three goes at opening these seasons already and he's kind of
- 1:14:31got down with the exact right team as well.
- 1:14:34You know, Tennant and Tate are just the exact right team to
- 1:14:36pull off this episode and it wouldn't have hang on.
- 1:14:41I'm still I think I'm still playing there.
- 1:14:43Shit, yeah, the exact right team to pull off this episode and it
- 1:14:48just it just works. I think everyone's got what they
- 1:14:53need to have to work it. This is This is what I'm saying
- 1:14:56about my analytical powers. I cannot think of the words to
- 1:14:59put into. It I understood what you were
- 1:15:00trying to say, don't worry. Everything was in place for it
- 1:15:04to work beautifully. Yeah.
- 1:15:06And. Maybe that is that doesn't.
- 1:15:07Have to be the case, you know, Like I'm going to make a
- 1:15:09comparison again, Bells of Saint John, which I think is all
- 1:15:12right, but it's in no way as fun to watch as this.
- 1:15:16I don't. No, that's true.
- 1:15:17No, I felt very underwhelmed with that with with Bells of
- 1:15:21Saint John. And like I say, I'm a I'm a
- 1:15:22Smith fan anyway, but I liked him with I liked him with Karen
- 1:15:26and Arthur, but. It's doing exactly the same
- 1:15:28thing as well. It's reintroducing somebody
- 1:15:30we've already met. Yeah, technically in a
- 1:15:32different. I know Donald was the same
- 1:15:34person, but she's kind of a different person here.
- 1:15:36Yeah. In a fun episode set in London,
- 1:15:40you know, with a big grandstanding villain in Celia
- 1:15:42Emery, but who's nowhere near as fun as Sarah Lancashire is in
- 1:15:45this. You know, it's.
- 1:15:46Yeah. So.
- 1:15:47So the the what you just said there about the right things
- 1:15:50being in the right place, I don't think that has to be the
- 1:15:52case. So they they were lucky or they
- 1:15:54were skilful. Yeah, no, very true.
- 1:15:57He also asked. Then many people fell in love
- 1:16:00with Catherine Tate's Donna here.
- 1:16:02But what was the moment for you? Well, I think in, in this
- 1:16:13probably the, I mean, it's got to be the window scene.
- 1:16:15Surely that's the bit where but you, you feel sympathy with her
- 1:16:18when she's being bollocked by her mum and you, you can relate
- 1:16:22to her and she, you love spending time with her family
- 1:16:24already. But the, the, that bit where she
- 1:16:26clicks with in the windows, it is just, it's just perfect.
- 1:16:30There is literally, there's no other way to describe it.
- 1:16:32It's perfect. I will say, I think the bit on
- 1:16:35where the TARDIS is bouncing along the motorway in Runaway,
- 1:16:37right is is the bit where obviously at that point we
- 1:16:41didn't know she was going to be a companion at any point.
- 1:16:43But that's the bit where that scene is just gorgeous as well.
- 1:16:46She says Santa's a robot, I. Mean, I mean, for me in this, it
- 1:16:51was the opening scene where she's all business in a
- 1:16:55business, so going into a business to do an investigation
- 1:16:59and she don't even need the doctor.
- 1:17:00I mean, she wants the doctor, but she's there.
- 1:17:02She's doing it all without him. Yeah, but it's the thing that
- 1:17:05she obviously, she doesn't seem to be, you know, like when
- 1:17:08Wilfie is saying about, you know, where's that girl gone?
- 1:17:10She's clearly still there because she's she's wandering
- 1:17:12around in a business suit doing all the stuff.
- 1:17:14It's that, but that lack of confidence that she's clearly
- 1:17:17still got. She thinks that she needs more
- 1:17:19than she is, and she doesn't. She's she's brilliant as she is.
- 1:17:23It's why I think at the end of the season, even though it's
- 1:17:26devastating when she loses her memories, Yeah, Turn Left has
- 1:17:29already proven that without the Doctor, Donna can be incredible
- 1:17:34because she makes all the choices in Turn Left without
- 1:17:38having ever known the Doctor. She sacrificed her life.
- 1:17:41She does the right thing, you know, She steps up and she makes
- 1:17:43a difference and and she hasn't even met that.
- 1:17:46So, so the fact that she doesn't know the doctor at the end of
- 1:17:48the season, people go, oh, she was better with him.
- 1:17:50That's what Will says. I said, no, she's still a good
- 1:17:52person. She will still be a good person
- 1:17:54and she still is a good person. Will we catch up with her
- 1:17:58unbelievably, 20 years later in the Star Beast?
- 1:18:01Yeah, no, she's, I think it's that, Yeah, it's that, you know,
- 1:18:06he brings out the best in her and he helps her find herself.
- 1:18:08But she was always, she was always there.
- 1:18:11Do you want to hear now? Right?
- 1:18:12Yeah. I've got 2 from Fraser Gregory
- 1:18:13for you. I'm so sorry.
- 1:18:15This first one is the most evil question that has ever been put
- 1:18:19to any member of the Ham fam. Oh God.
- 1:18:22Yeah, you should be scared. I wouldn't want to answer this.
- 1:18:25I'll refuse. You can only pick one, lose the
- 1:18:29other for the rest of the series.
- 1:18:32Catherine Tate or Bernard Cribbins.
- 1:18:36Oh God, that is a horrible question.
- 1:18:38Yeah, he's evil. Yeah, now I'm trying to.
- 1:18:48I don't. I don't know you.
- 1:18:49Strictly can't have the scene, can I not?
- 1:18:50You don't have to keep me in suspense.
- 1:18:52Can I can I lose tenant instead to just have?
- 1:18:56Yes. Taking Cribbins just go off on
- 1:18:58her benches in the TARDIS themselves I think that would
- 1:19:00be. Wouldn't that be wonderful?
- 1:19:02She could be the Metacritic. You know when she takes all the
- 1:19:04memories at the end of the season.
- 1:19:05Yeah, because she's, yeah, she's that.
- 1:19:07I would have watched that. So watch the show, go on.
- 1:19:09That Come on, Gramps, let's go. I think that's the only way that
- 1:19:12anyone can answer that question, so I'll go with that.
- 1:19:15And of course, finally, this is the last question for the
- 1:19:18episode. All right, he asked Fraser
- 1:19:20Gregory Quarks or crotons, because he just fucking asked
- 1:19:24that question to everyone. It's got to be quarks, right?
- 1:19:28Well, he'll be happy, yeah. Yeah, you can't.
- 1:19:30You can't. It's.
- 1:19:31Just terrible. Now I like, you know what I
- 1:19:33like? I like the Crotons when I
- 1:19:34watched it but it's. Erection points.
- 1:19:37But they're not. They're not the iconic, they're
- 1:19:39not the iconic quarks. Are they really?
- 1:19:42Sort of little arms that come out, yeah.
- 1:19:44Yeah, it's the fact that they don't come out.
- 1:19:46It's the fact they come out on different levels.
- 1:19:47I think that's what I've always liked about them, is that they
- 1:19:50come out separately. That's what I enjoy.
- 1:19:52I mean, I will say I don't buy Doctor Who figures.
- 1:19:54Yeah, but I do have a quark. That's.
- 1:19:56Beautiful. I do have an Adipox so.
- 1:19:59Like those are the two that I absolutely.
- 1:20:01Had to have, I think it's the ones that are queue, you know,
- 1:20:04those are the ones I want. If they did that little troll
- 1:20:06doll from Tara, the Altons, you know, the one that comes alive
- 1:20:09when you heat things up, I'll get him as well.
- 1:20:12Yeah. Well, look, Joe, now there's one
- 1:20:15last thing we have to do. It sounds so weird saying Joe
- 1:20:19Mad. There's one last thing we have
- 1:20:22to do, and that is to list our three fabulous things about
- 1:20:25parlours in crime before we head into the Father Pompeii.
- 1:20:29Oh God. You're not prepared for this,
- 1:20:31have you? No, I've not.
- 1:20:32Do you? Want me to go first as a sort of
- 1:20:34example? Yeah, sure, you go first.
- 1:20:37I feel like it's not so much that I haven't prepared because
- 1:20:40I feel like the answers are obvious, but I don't want to be.
- 1:20:42I don't want to be a basic bitch and but I may not have a choice
- 1:20:46on this because it's just if you pick all the obvious ones, I'll
- 1:20:49have to think outside the box. Oh.
- 1:20:51OK, I'll I'll be niche then. I'm going to choose the the bald
- 1:20:55headed guard with the gun because I want him to come to my
- 1:20:59house tonight and do obscene things to me.
- 1:21:02Now it's your turn. I bet you weren't going to
- 1:21:04choose him, was you? No, he probably wouldn't have
- 1:21:07been top three, but I'm going to say pursuing the obvious, I'm
- 1:21:13going to say that scene in the toilet where they're kicking the
- 1:21:15doors in just in following on from your from your guard.
- 1:21:20I feel that scene probably doesn't get the it's not as well
- 1:21:26remembered maybe as the as as it could be because there's so much
- 1:21:31else to commend the episode. But that scene, like it was,
- 1:21:34again, I feel like I talk about myself a lot of these, but like,
- 1:21:37it really has been a revelation. Discovering it with him and his
- 1:21:42face when she didn't get caught. Yeah, was an absolute picture.
- 1:21:47It was fantastic. Way to watch Doctor Who were
- 1:21:49Kids and seeing the bits that get them, you know, and impress
- 1:21:52them and make them laugh. Yeah, he was wonderful.
- 1:21:55Yeah, and he was absolutely furious when they didn't meet
- 1:21:57each other at the end of that other way.
- 1:21:58He was just like, oh, come on. That means Russell's doing his
- 1:22:01job, right? Like, yeah.
- 1:22:02And you're frustrated. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:22:04It's very hard to do a suspense sequence like that and to pay it
- 1:22:08off brilliantly with the answer that's already been set up.
- 1:22:11That's sort of Moffett's right, and that is.
- 1:22:13Yeah, no, it's yeah. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna go with
- 1:22:15that. Also, she must have been very
- 1:22:16confused that that journalist sitting in there just thinking,
- 1:22:20why is that Lady saying she's in church?
- 1:22:21What the Hell's going on here? What is going on?
- 1:22:24In there never We never. We never.
- 1:22:25Find out we. Need to report on here.
- 1:22:27Well, my second thing then is going to be the delirious, the
- 1:22:30delicious Sarah Lancaster as Miss Foster, who, you know, arch
- 1:22:35doesn't begin to cover it, but Russell knows she's capable of
- 1:22:39delivering any line that he gives her in the most divine
- 1:22:44fashion. And she just, she aces this role
- 1:22:48in a way that I think few, a lot of guest, big name guest actors
- 1:22:52come in, you know, big in British TV, come in to Doctor
- 1:22:55Who and just make no impact on me whatsoever.
- 1:22:57I mentioned senior Emery. Olivia Coleman in the 11th hour
- 1:23:02made no impact on me whatsoever. Who's Miss Dale Fox in Time
- 1:23:05Heist. Keely Horse.
- 1:23:07Oh yeah, I remember a thing about what she does in that
- 1:23:10episode. I just, I'm not sure Moffett has
- 1:23:12that ability to deliver those camp lines in.
- 1:23:15No, I think that's fair. I think with with Sarah
- 1:23:17Lancaster, it's I feel like I've, like I said to you before,
- 1:23:22I've I've no ability to combine the idea of her in this and her
- 1:23:28in Happy Valley with like they, they in the same way that like
- 1:23:33the only other person I can think of really does that in my
- 1:23:36mind is Johnny Depp. Like in terms of being able to
- 1:23:39be Willy Wonka and Captain Jack Sparrow.
- 1:23:41They're just, it's like this. They can't be the same.
- 1:23:44But I know it's I know they're actors.
- 1:23:45I know that's how that works. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not thick.
- 1:23:48Actors do tend to be quite typecast though.
- 1:23:51I think they say that doesn't happen, but I think you usually
- 1:23:53get actors in particular type of roles.
- 1:23:55You see Bill Bailey and people like that in certain types of
- 1:23:58roles, whereas Sarah Lancaster, I just think she could deliver
- 1:24:01anything. Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 1:24:03She's fantastic. So now that's a, that's a,
- 1:24:05that's a reasonable choice. Wow.
- 1:24:06Back to. You then I'm going to go for I'm
- 1:24:11going to go for the added pose. I just think there's such a
- 1:24:13brilliant creation. It's such a lovely and they're
- 1:24:15so they're so of the time as well.
- 1:24:17Like obviously diet culture was such a big thing.
- 1:24:20You know, this is the sort of thing we probably should have
- 1:24:21talked about during the episode really, because it would have
- 1:24:23been we got a sidetracked. But I think yeah, diet culture
- 1:24:27was such a big thing at this period in history.
- 1:24:28What's this about 2009? Is it like it's just it was
- 1:24:33everywhere, every programme on Channel 4 was?
- 1:24:35Why are you so fat? Oh no, Secret Eaters was my
- 1:24:39favorite. Did you ever watch that?
- 1:24:40No, it was not. Loads of cameras in their
- 1:24:42houses, right? And they wrote a diary at the
- 1:24:44start to say what they thought they ate and then the cameras
- 1:24:47filmed them. But they don't tell them.
- 1:24:49They put cameras in their workplace, in their cars and all
- 1:24:52the all of this. So they're eating at home, like
- 1:24:54what they're saying they're eating in the diary, then
- 1:24:56they're going to their friend's house or dobbing them all in and
- 1:24:59they're eating chip butties, you know, and mayonnaise straight
- 1:25:03from the bottle and think, oh, it was wonderful.
- 1:25:05And then they'd have some lovely footage of me just eating lots
- 1:25:08of cheese out of the fridge in the three in the morning.
- 1:25:10Really. Yeah, well, I don't.
- 1:25:11Live together, you know? I mean, I'm usually up at 4:00
- 1:25:13in the morning snuffling in the fridge.
- 1:25:15Yeah, there've been, there've never been any cheese though,
- 1:25:18and I think that would be a problem, yeah.
- 1:25:19That's true. We could do Lady in the Tramp,
- 1:25:21you know. OK, take a block and leave it
- 1:25:22somewhere in the middle. That's Jesus Christ trying to
- 1:25:26like a full, like a full sort of 5K block of trees trying to
- 1:25:30shove it. It's not very sexy, but it'd be
- 1:25:33quite satisfying. Yeah, yeah, it's you'd need a
- 1:25:36right pair of teeth to get through that crash.
- 1:25:38Sorry, you were saying about the diet industry?
- 1:25:41Yeah, no, I think, you know, it's obviously very of its time
- 1:25:45and I don't know how much it doesn't feel particularly like
- 1:25:48it's aged very badly either. I feel like he, he makes his
- 1:25:51points very well. And the adipose are such a
- 1:25:52lovely, like they're such a lovely benign alien.
- 1:25:56And we get so few of those that work.
- 1:25:58I I just love them. I just love them.
- 1:26:00They're perfect. And we both had yours exploded,
- 1:26:04but we both had an adipose. So I think that's a that's
- 1:26:07considered a marketing success as far as we're concerned.
- 1:26:11I can't help but think though, if they were doing it in real
- 1:26:13life, surely they would be marketing the adipose as little
- 1:26:15pets like. Just don't believe we didn't
- 1:26:18have the goblins on the shelf, you know, and all these other
- 1:26:21things he was doing in RTD too. I know, I really, I remember
- 1:26:24saying to my wife before I was like, it's coming, like it's
- 1:26:26going to start again. These figures are going to be,
- 1:26:28it's going to be everywhere, actually just.
- 1:26:30You could have those hideous space babies on the shelf.
- 1:26:32You know, you sort of push them and they say, oh, I'm Captain
- 1:26:35Poppy. Oh God, yeah.
- 1:26:38Now that'll be horrendous. Some of the dolls that I see
- 1:26:40now, like if I'm walking up the Thai aisle, like they're just.
- 1:26:43They're too convincing, aren't they?
- 1:26:45They're terrified. My when we were just moving, so
- 1:26:48we, we didn't live in Wakefield before and now we do live in
- 1:26:50Wakefield, but the, when we were moving here, we were.
- 1:26:54You didn't need that amount of context actually for this story,
- 1:26:57but I'm providing it nonetheless.
- 1:26:58Yeah, well, I mean, you've given Albert your address on this
- 1:27:00call. Be careful, right?
- 1:27:01They'll be coming round. Well, like I say, I could deal
- 1:27:04with. I need some more friends.
- 1:27:06The we were at a playground, like outside a, a pub or
- 1:27:11something. And there was this, you know,
- 1:27:12those reborn dolls that they're called the ones where like for
- 1:27:15people who've liked. Yeah, it's like for people
- 1:27:17who've lost kids or something. And why take the piss then?
- 1:27:19That sounds very, yeah. Well, you know, wait till you
- 1:27:23hear the rest of the story. They're very, they're very
- 1:27:25realistic, very like hyper real horrible.
- 1:27:28They're actually really horrible, to be honest, But I'll
- 1:27:30I'll take the piss. They're awful things, but the
- 1:27:34and we were in this playground and we were just standing there.
- 1:27:37This child was up for climate frame, whatever.
- 1:27:39This baby just dropped from the sky and face planted onto the
- 1:27:44ground. And my wife just screamed and it
- 1:27:47said that it was one of those dolls, but we thought it was a
- 1:27:49real baby. Oh my God.
- 1:27:51Horrible dropped out of the sky like Sarah Lancaster.
- 1:27:54You know how I have all of this sort of hatred towards these
- 1:27:57horrible kiddie wings from the Steven Moffett era, You know,
- 1:27:59and GRT those those horrible yeah, maybe I should get one of
- 1:28:03those dolls. I could take it all out on that.
- 1:28:05Then I will be nice on the podcast about the children.
- 1:28:08You know, it's sort of a way of just getting it all out of my
- 1:28:11system. I started making jokes about
- 1:28:13putting them all in gas chambers.
- 1:28:14I mean, I will be cancelled at some point, no?
- 1:28:17I don't know if you're putting out your own stuff, I don't
- 1:28:19think you can be cancelled. Is that not the podcasting?
- 1:28:21Sure, that's the whole point. I don't know.
- 1:28:24I don't know where the line is. Oh, well, I'll do my last thing
- 1:28:27then. And that is going to be.
- 1:28:29I just think the comedy lands here and comedy and Doctor Who
- 1:28:31goes one or two ways is usually the sublime or it's agonizing.
- 1:28:36And the new series is very capable.
- 1:28:38I mean, need I'll remind you of the Wi-Fi family from
- 1:28:42Resolution. You know, where the Wi-Fi goes
- 1:28:44off and what the hell are we going to do?
- 1:28:46Or we'll have to talk to each other.
- 1:28:47What, you know, terrible. Or that TomTom joke in the
- 1:28:51Moffett era. Boy, oh boy, awful.
- 1:28:55But this is very cleverly directed comedy of the two of
- 1:29:00them missing each other and then blissfully active comedy where
- 1:29:04you have them doing the miming in the middle and then just very
- 1:29:07witty comedy where you have the confrontation scene.
- 1:29:10And I just think it all lands. James Strong is a is a strong
- 1:29:13enough. Well done, Joe.
- 1:29:15He's a good enough director to land all the comedy and it
- 1:29:19really needed somebody good for that.
- 1:29:21Yeah, no, it's I, I can't disagree with any of that.
- 1:29:23I think it's it's, it's, it's just the perfect comedy episode.
- 1:29:27And it's, it's a great introductory episode as well.
- 1:29:29Like it just brings in everything.
- 1:29:31And who's not watching next week after you've seen this?
- 1:29:34You've got one more choice. And if one of us don't choose
- 1:29:36Catherine Tate fucking out? Can I, can I be, can I be a bit
- 1:29:41cheeky and sort of say the combination of Tennant and Tate
- 1:29:43and Murray Gold because I think go.
- 1:29:45For it, yeah. The the that them as a TARDIS
- 1:29:47team. Like I say, Tennant is not my
- 1:29:49favorite doctor, not because of anything he's done.
- 1:29:51I just happen to prefer the others.
- 1:29:53But I think with Tate that it's just a magic.
- 1:29:56It's a magic combination. And I think again, Murray hits
- 1:30:01his stride. Murray like we're friends, but
- 1:30:05he hits. It's just yeah, he he just that
- 1:30:10combination of the three of them and just tenant smile and the
- 1:30:13way they find each other and the music just brings it all
- 1:30:16together. It's just magic.
- 1:30:18Like, I just don't think there's anything you can say about this
- 1:30:20that's. I've seen it too many times and
- 1:30:23I still enjoy watching it. I even then just put on the
- 1:30:26climax before we came on the call just to watch the last 15
- 1:30:29minutes again and I can just watch it over and over.
- 1:30:32It's just one of those doctors. Can I do a little .5?
- 1:30:34Last thing, it's not really a. Match Podcast.
- 1:30:37But it's like, well, you know, it's our podcast tonight.
- 1:30:41That's the whole point of this is thank you so much to Billie
- 1:30:45Piper for coming in and just doing her fabulous pout.
- 1:30:49You know, when she really pouts up her lips like a total cunt
- 1:30:52and walks off like that without showing her hideous new teeth
- 1:30:55because she really landed the moment.
- 1:30:57Well done, Billy. See, and you say that, but then
- 1:31:00when you know sometimes if you plant Billy Piper at the end of
- 1:31:03an episode without telling anybody it's going to happen, it
- 1:31:05really pisses people off. Well, yes, in an indeterminate.
- 1:31:08Statement. Yeah, What's what's happening?
- 1:31:11Why is Billie Piper there? Why do we keep doing this?
- 1:31:13We. Can't let her go.
- 1:31:16I thought we'd seen the back of her when it came to day of the
- 1:31:19doctor, you know, and she was that bomb.
- 1:31:22Well, look, I mean, what a blissful couple of hours we had
- 1:31:26there talking about partners in crime.
- 1:31:27Unfortunately, your work is not done yet tonight.
- 1:31:30All right, we are heading into the second episode now, but I
- 1:31:34suppose we. Should out this in our Partners
- 1:31:36in Crime sort of a way. Should we mime our way out of
- 1:31:39the episode? If you can do that in an audio
- 1:31:42medium, I shall be incredibly impressed.
