Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to another episode the Fox Crickets Podcast,
- 0:04Speaker 1: the follow On. In fact, it's the season opener and
- 0:07Speaker 1: we've got a massive season to come with the Asia
- 0:09Speaker 1: Cup on our doorstep. We've got the Women's World Cup
- 0:13Speaker 1: not too far away. Australia's hosting India in white ball
- 0:16Speaker 1: cricket in late October and early November, and then the
- 0:20Speaker 1: big one, the Ashes, which should be amazing summer, followed
- 0:24Speaker 1: off by women hosting India to complete a massive summer ahead.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Given us a massive summer, it's pretty good to be
- 0:31Speaker 1: joined by an absolute legiond of Australian cricket. Fox Cricket
- 0:35Speaker 1: favorite Brett Lee seventy six Tests, two hundred and twenty
- 0:40Speaker 1: one od i's almost seven hundred wickets combined in those formats.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Great to have you with the.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Spread, Thanks Courtney House things mate.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been really good.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Pleasure to get across the Lords during during the Aussie
- 0:52Speaker 1: winter to see the World Test Championship final resulted in
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Australia's way, but it was quite quite the scene
- 0:59Speaker 1: and to see South Africa and it's just snare one.
- 1:02Speaker 1: How about yourself, what's being on with you in the
- 1:04Speaker 1: off season? Has it been off season.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Well, there's there's never an off season, mate, It's always work, work, work,
- 1:09Speaker 4: But hey, that's what I love.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I actually went to Lords as well, but for the
- 1:12Speaker 3: different test.
- 1:13Speaker 4: I went to watch India play England, which was an
- 1:16Speaker 4: absolute cracker. Thirty four degrees at Lord's, which sounds like
- 1:20Speaker 4: an oxymoron having a hot day in England, but super
- 1:23Speaker 4: exciting and seeing two teams at the top.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Of their game and what a wonderful game of cricket.
- 1:27Speaker 4: But yeah, there's there's been plenty of cricket that's been
- 1:30Speaker 4: played the last three or four months, and as you mentioned,
- 1:33Speaker 4: some exciting cricket coming up.
- 1:35Speaker 1: No, I'd love to say that it'd be nice to
- 1:37Speaker 1: be able to get an al in England at Lord's
- 1:39Speaker 1: during during a day like that, but I suspect the
- 1:41Speaker 1: beers or warm, so no joy there.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah, well depends where you look.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Very good.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Well, look, what we'll we should do is get into
- 1:49Speaker 1: it and basically we'll start with the Asia Cap. I'd
- 1:51Speaker 1: love to get your insights on that. It's worth knowing
- 1:53Speaker 1: that it starts later this week September tenth. CAO Sports
- 1:58Speaker 1: is showing every single game me the Asia Cup. Match
- 2:01Speaker 1: live from the United arow Emirates, which I believe you're
- 2:03Speaker 1: pretty familiar with. These days, we've got nine en games
- 2:06Speaker 1: coming up. The big one before the finals is Pakistan
- 2:10Speaker 1: versus India. But its shapes is a really cracking way
- 2:13Speaker 1: to get into it. So all on KO Sports. You
- 2:16Speaker 1: spent a lot of time in India, You've played a
- 2:19Speaker 1: lot of crickets sort of through there. I'm not sure
- 2:21Speaker 1: if you actually played in the United Arab Members during
- 2:24Speaker 1: your career, but the Asia Cup. Explained to our listeners
- 2:27Speaker 1: why it's so significant.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Well, I think the Asia Cup what it brings, it's
- 2:32Speaker 4: the best of the best in these conditions. So when
- 2:34Speaker 4: you think about playing over here in Asia when it's low,
- 2:39Speaker 4: slow wickets that not really conducive to fast bowling, it's
- 2:43Speaker 4: the opportunity to see these teams that have grow up
- 2:45Speaker 4: in this environment, hot, humid conditions. I mean at the moment,
- 2:49Speaker 4: it's late thirties already here in Dubai. It's only ten
- 2:53Speaker 4: o'clock in the morning my local time. As we do
- 2:55Speaker 4: this podcast, it's been getting up to the mid forties
- 2:58Speaker 4: every single day. For a Westerner to come over here,
- 3:02Speaker 4: it's you've got your work cut out, whereas these teams India, Pakistan, Bangalesh,
- 3:07Speaker 4: Sri Lanka, UAE just to name a few, they're used
- 3:12Speaker 4: to these conditions. So I think spin will play a massive,
- 3:15Speaker 4: a massive role. But you know, as you're rightly pointed out,
- 3:19Speaker 4: the talk on the town right now is the fourteenth
- 3:21Speaker 4: India versus Pakistan.
- 3:22Speaker 3: It's shaping up to be an absolute cracker.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and we might even look into those two teams.
- 3:27Speaker 1: But World Cups are massive. I know that the Asian
- 3:31Speaker 1: Games throughout Asia just a wildly watched thing, almost as
- 3:34Speaker 1: well watches what the Olympics is. I think if you
- 3:37Speaker 1: win a gold medal in some countries or exempt from
- 3:40Speaker 1: Olympic effort, sorry from military service, so it is massive.
- 3:44Speaker 1: If you're from Australia, you just cannot discount how hard
- 3:46Speaker 1: these teams will be going at each other throughout the Asia.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Cap no look of course, and you sort of think
- 3:52Speaker 4: about both teams now they've you know, a couple of
- 3:55Speaker 4: players have moved on. There's no Koalie, there's no row
- 3:59Speaker 4: at Charm and no Judasia. And there's talk on the
- 4:02Speaker 4: town as well that Barbara's arms knocking an opportunity through
- 4:05Speaker 4: Pakistan there's a bit of conjecture and his strike rate
- 4:09Speaker 4: Rizwan as well might be left out. So that's what
- 4:13Speaker 4: I'm hearing. That's what people are saying on the ground
- 4:15Speaker 4: over here. Look, when you think about the great players
- 4:19Speaker 4: that have played the game and also too, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 4: I actually want to point out and it's great that
- 4:23Speaker 4: it's on Ko as well. You know, like a lot
- 4:25Speaker 4: of people that will be focusing in from Australia when
- 4:28Speaker 4: they talk about the Asia Cup, they always think about
- 4:30Speaker 4: the fifty over format.
- 4:31Speaker 3: This is the T twenty format. This has only been.
- 4:33Speaker 4: The third occasion it'll be played over here in this
- 4:36Speaker 4: format T twenty format twenty sixteen, India one twenty twenty two.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Shri Laka took out the title.
- 4:43Speaker 4: But there's been a lot of Asia Cup series played,
- 4:46Speaker 4: but more so the longer format of the game. So
- 4:47Speaker 4: I'm looking forward to seeing how these young players coming
- 4:50Speaker 4: through can dominate on this shorter format, because playing fifty
- 4:55Speaker 4: over crick in this heat would be pretty damn tough.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I don't doubt that at all. In fact, you can
- 5:01Speaker 1: have that and even commentating, I'm hoping you've got some
- 5:02Speaker 1: recondition over there. But it's a new look India, isn't
- 5:06Speaker 1: it You touched on some of the players that are out, No, Kalie,
- 5:09Speaker 1: it's inconceivable if you've watched white ball cricket, No Sharma,
- 5:14Speaker 1: no captain by Yadov, You've got Shubmun Gill, Jasper Bomra.
- 5:21Speaker 1: They are in the team. But there's a lot of
- 5:23Speaker 1: newcomers as well. What do we expect from India in
- 5:25Speaker 1: the next generation of crickets. They performed so exceptionally well
- 5:28Speaker 1: against single and in the tests we saw some newcomers
- 5:30Speaker 1: there and fantastic without some of the champions. They've been
- 5:34Speaker 1: dominant in white ball cricket in the past.
- 5:38Speaker 2: What can we.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Expect from them in the next little while as they,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I suppose continue to evolve.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Yeah, well, with those big big dogs moving away and
- 5:46Speaker 4: hanging up their T twenty format and looking for bigger
- 5:50Speaker 4: and better things, and you know, it all happens. You know,
- 5:53Speaker 4: we'd loved all these these heroes of the game that
- 5:56Speaker 4: play for as long as possible, but it's not.
- 5:58Speaker 3: It's not the case.
- 5:59Speaker 4: But then what it does, so it opens up a
- 6:01Speaker 4: lot of different doors to these younger players coming through.
- 6:03Speaker 4: The captain as you mentioned, Saruku Yadov, who I think
- 6:07Speaker 4: is going to be a great leader, has already shown
- 6:09Speaker 4: a lot of class, has already shown now in different
- 6:13Speaker 4: formats as well, how he can step up and not
- 6:15Speaker 4: be overall by the situation, even when it comes to
- 6:19Speaker 4: a bit of on field stuff.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Has actually stood his ground, which I love about that.
- 6:22Speaker 4: I love that, you know, a young captain only in
- 6:25Speaker 4: the early stage of his captaincy career is actually you.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Know, laying down the law.
- 6:31Speaker 4: So he's built a nice team around him, a couple
- 6:34Speaker 4: of young spinners coming in, a couple of older spinners
- 6:36Speaker 4: that will play a role. But then you know, you
- 6:38Speaker 4: think of the hardych pannels of the world, that those
- 6:41Speaker 4: genuine all rounders that need to step up, that have
- 6:43Speaker 4: had success in the past, but this is their time
- 6:46Speaker 4: to shine now. So look, it is a new look India.
- 6:50Speaker 4: It's a new look with a few more people on
- 6:53Speaker 4: the bus sitting in different spots. That's my best analogy
- 6:55Speaker 4: of the best way to explain it. So look, the
- 6:59Speaker 4: squad hasn't changed lot, but there will be some younger
- 7:01Speaker 4: guys in a different position. One's got a captaincy next
- 7:05Speaker 4: to his name that will have an opportunity to stand
- 7:07Speaker 4: up and be that next generation coming through.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Pakistan's had a couple of successes in Asian Games, Asian
- 7:14Speaker 1: Cups through the different to ODI to T twenty captain
- 7:19Speaker 1: by someone Aliaga. You're right in terms of I don't
- 7:23Speaker 1: think that Barbarissam will be there normal Rizwan, but they
- 7:29Speaker 1: are coming in off a big win over Afghanistan in
- 7:31Speaker 1: a recent try series.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I suppose competition.
- 7:35Speaker 1: They get up by seventy five runs in the most
- 7:37Speaker 1: recent recent outiting in's Afghanistan.
- 7:39Speaker 2: So they come in with some form.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Yeah, look, they definitely do.
- 7:44Speaker 4: And I'm sort of reading up because I haven't actually
- 7:46Speaker 4: watched them as much as I've been focusing on the
- 7:49Speaker 4: Indian team, you know, watching them live and watching obviously
- 7:51Speaker 4: what they've done. But I know that through reading the
- 7:53Speaker 4: stats and through reading what Pakistan have done, you know
- 7:56Speaker 4: they are coming in as a hot contender. If you
- 7:59Speaker 4: look back to your Cup fifty over format, I think
- 8:02Speaker 4: India one eight, I think Pakistan have won two. Does
- 8:05Speaker 4: that spill over then to what we're thinking about the
- 8:07Speaker 4: T twenty format. I think it definitely plays a role
- 8:11Speaker 4: in these big tournaments. But the thing with Pakistan, they
- 8:14Speaker 4: have to make sure that they get off to a
- 8:17Speaker 4: great start, and I think that's the reason why coach
- 8:20Speaker 4: Hessen has gone, Look, I actually want some explosive power
- 8:23Speaker 4: at the top. I don't want to have a guy
- 8:24Speaker 4: that plays Yanka role. This is T twenty cricket now,
- 8:28Speaker 4: barba'sam how good is riz One?
- 8:30Speaker 3: How good he is at the top. That's more of
- 8:32Speaker 3: a fifty over play.
- 8:33Speaker 4: From what he's saying and what I'm reading, they want
- 8:36Speaker 4: some young players. I don't know who's going to be
- 8:37Speaker 4: at the top. I don't know who they're going to go.
- 8:39Speaker 4: And they've got definitely got some great options. But whichever
- 8:42Speaker 4: team that they put in the park first up and
- 8:45Speaker 4: the first top four is the explosive top four. They
- 8:49Speaker 4: have to come out India or come at India super
- 8:52Speaker 4: hard in that first six overs. But they've got the
- 8:54Speaker 4: big left arm, quick to bringing ham by those perfect
- 8:57Speaker 4: gorkers in a free.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Di We know, I suppose the history and the tension
- 9:03Speaker 1: between the two nations. When you get to tournaments like this,
- 9:06Speaker 1: it's a rarity that we see them play against each other.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Does it add a level of anticipation in the excitement
- 9:13Speaker 1: mindful that we just don't get to see them that
- 9:15Speaker 1: often against each other.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Look, and if you are the players, they just want
- 9:20Speaker 4: to play cricket. They just want to have some fun.
- 9:22Speaker 4: They're out there as athletes. They want to Every opportunity
- 9:25Speaker 4: to play against every nation is so important, you know
- 9:28Speaker 4: for us. Imagine saying for us, we can't play against England,
- 9:31Speaker 4: and I know that the circumstances are different, and I'm
- 9:33Speaker 4: not in their shoes. I'm not going to even try
- 9:35Speaker 4: to go down the path to what they've both been
- 9:38Speaker 4: through with different countries. But if you look purely from
- 9:41Speaker 4: a cricketing point of view, they just want to express
- 9:43Speaker 4: themselves as athletes. So I'm really glad the age of
- 9:46Speaker 4: Cup's been put on. I'm glad that both teams have
- 9:50Speaker 4: agreed to play against each other because at the end
- 9:52Speaker 4: of the day, as I keep saying, they want to
- 9:54Speaker 4: go out there and there won't be any love loss when
- 9:56Speaker 4: they walk in the field. But what I can promise
- 9:58Speaker 4: you is off the field, they'll be baking hands, will
- 10:00Speaker 4: be hugging each other. The respects there for each other
- 10:04Speaker 4: and that's all that counts about cricket.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And just just one last one in the Asian Games,
- 10:09Speaker 1: I suppose we've Asia Cup. More to the point, Afghanistan
- 10:12Speaker 1: has been joint killers in the past. We've seen them
- 10:14Speaker 1: have success in World Cups and pull off a couple
- 10:17Speaker 1: of big upsets. Sri Lanka, you know, have had great success.
- 10:21Speaker 1: We know that they weren't as good against Australia sort
- 10:23Speaker 1: of earlier in the year, but capable of anything. And
- 10:27Speaker 1: then I guess even the United Ara Rememirates who are hosting,
- 10:30Speaker 1: have a team in this competition. So there'll be a
- 10:33Speaker 1: lot of interests I'm sure locally as well as internationally.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, exactly, yeah, absolutely no other there that
- 10:39Speaker 4: The big game is of course India v.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Pakistan. That's the one that everyone will want to watch.
- 10:43Speaker 4: But the people in Ka that there are other games,
- 10:46Speaker 4: you know as well as you know available, the chance
- 10:49Speaker 4: to see Rashid khanbell to boil these beautiful gurgles and
- 10:52Speaker 4: to take one away and rip one past the you know,
- 10:54Speaker 4: the the off stump of a right handed batsman.
- 10:58Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Hassrang has been some really good form as well from
- 11:02Speaker 4: different playing nations. Got some local players here in UAE,
- 11:05Speaker 4: So there's there's plan to watch and there's plenty of
- 11:08Speaker 4: excitement that's going to come.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Up perfect now we've talked about in You're a Bit,
- 11:12Speaker 1: but posts that they've got a pretty big tour of
- 11:14Speaker 1: Australia in terms of white ball cricket. We've got some
- 11:17Speaker 1: ten twenties and Odie I's in later in October and also.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Early into March.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I think we've got a big Odie at the MCG
- 11:26Speaker 1: Victoria Darby Eve, which I'm sure is going to draw
- 11:29Speaker 1: a big crowd before one of those prime race days
- 11:32Speaker 1: in Victoria. Australia coming off I suppose a series on
- 11:37Speaker 1: the top end against South Africa where.
- 11:40Speaker 2: They had some good moments.
- 11:41Speaker 1: They were also disappointed in a couple of games, but
- 11:44Speaker 1: it looks just brilliant cricket through through Darwin Ken's and
- 11:49Speaker 1: also Makay had a chance to talk to a lot
- 11:51Speaker 1: of the guys who were involved in that last week
- 11:53Speaker 1: up in Brisbane and they loved they love playing in.
- 11:55Speaker 2: The top end escaping.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I suppose a Southern winter is not a bad thing
- 12:00Speaker 1: I expect there because we have got I guess a
- 12:02Speaker 1: World Cup on the horizon in terms of T twenties
- 12:05Speaker 1: and next February in Nexpibury, and then we've also got
- 12:09Speaker 1: an ODI World Cup further Afield in twenty twenty seven,
- 12:13Speaker 1: so a lot to look forward to.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, And that's what you want as an Australian player,
- 12:19Speaker 4: to actually find some form leading into these these fifty
- 12:23Speaker 4: over tournaments, leading into guys that will play both formats
- 12:26Speaker 4: or even three formats, you know, leading into it, you know,
- 12:29Speaker 4: an Australian Ashes series. So you know, there were some
- 12:32Speaker 4: guys that did some really good stuff up north, you know,
- 12:35Speaker 4: as you mentioned, I've had the pleasure to play up
- 12:38Speaker 4: North on a couple of.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Occasions, and you know, it's nice.
- 12:40Speaker 4: It's nice sometimes to get away from the big stadiums,
- 12:43Speaker 4: you know, like as much I love the Sydney Creek Ground,
- 12:45Speaker 4: the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Alaide over that they're all beautiful
- 12:48Speaker 4: venues and I'm sorry for the ones I've missed out,
- 12:51Speaker 4: but to get up north and to play in a
- 12:53Speaker 4: more country environment where we can showcase our talent and
- 12:58Speaker 4: if you speak to any form of creta, that's a
- 13:00Speaker 4: great tool.
- 13:01Speaker 3: You know.
- 13:01Speaker 4: You go up there, it's a bit more relaxed, You
- 13:03Speaker 4: get the local crowd to come down, you can sign
- 13:06Speaker 4: the autographs, you feel like you're a lot closer to
- 13:09Speaker 4: the public, you do some fishing on the side, you
- 13:11Speaker 4: might go and meet the locals, go to a nice restaurant.
- 13:13Speaker 3: It's always a good trip, always a good tour.
- 13:15Speaker 4: By the end of the day, you have to play
- 13:16Speaker 4: good cricket and so I think those guys would have
- 13:20Speaker 4: really enjoyed that top end tour. And now it's looking
- 13:24Speaker 4: forward to these odo's coming up against India. So this
- 13:28Speaker 4: is a very very important time, a very very important
- 13:31Speaker 4: series in the Australian calendar, not only because it's before
- 13:34Speaker 4: the Australian summer officially starts in terms of the ashes,
- 13:38Speaker 4: but this is thinking about what's happening coming up. We've
- 13:41Speaker 4: got World Cups next year, We've got you know, a
- 13:45Speaker 4: changing of the guard that's going to happen in the
- 13:48Speaker 4: next maybe twelve eighteen months without you know, putting anywhere
- 13:51Speaker 4: in the firing line. You have to look at the
- 13:53Speaker 4: Australian bowlers that are out there now and they will
- 13:56Speaker 4: go out on their own terms and they've actually earned
- 13:58Speaker 4: that right and so they should.
- 13:59Speaker 3: But they can't play forever. So you think about.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Stephen Smith in terms of the batters, you think about
- 14:05Speaker 4: starkas would come as Nathan Lyon they're not going to
- 14:08Speaker 4: play forever. So if you're a young guy doing well
- 14:11Speaker 4: the top end tour fifty over cricket, get yourself in
- 14:14Speaker 4: the Test squad as well.
- 14:15Speaker 3: There's a really good opportunity.
- 14:16Speaker 4: So there's a lot that lies on this fifty over
- 14:19Speaker 4: tournament against India as well.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Just on fishing.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I can tell you that Mitch Marsh, having to chat
- 14:24Speaker 1: to him, he took Tim David out. He said, Tim
- 14:26Speaker 1: David can go about as well as combat, which is
- 14:28Speaker 1: a fairly high praise. Less complimentary about a couple of
- 14:32Speaker 1: the other ossies, but that's some sea sickness suggestions and
- 14:36Speaker 1: not necessarily knowing which end of a rod to hold.
- 14:39Speaker 3: One of the definitely a rare breader us fisherman.
- 14:41Speaker 4: I love it. I know that I've been trying to
- 14:43Speaker 4: get out with Mitchell Marsh now for a number of years.
- 14:45Speaker 3: But yeah, maybe over someone we can get out and
- 14:47Speaker 3: catch and fish. But look, it just.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Takes your mind off cricket, whether it's music, whether it's
- 14:52Speaker 4: going to watch a movie somewhere.
- 14:54Speaker 3: People sometimes love to have a fish.
- 14:55Speaker 4: But yeah, hasn't hurt Mitchell Marsh's you know stats recently anyway, And.
- 15:00Speaker 1: You said about Mitchell like you talked about some of
- 15:02Speaker 1: the ball as Mitchell Stark recently announced his retirement from
- 15:05Speaker 1: the T twenty scene to you know, with a view
- 15:08Speaker 1: to the ODI that's right of the T twenty World Cup,
- 15:12Speaker 1: Glenn Maxwell's pulled out of the you know he's written
- 15:14Speaker 1: as he's retired a bit earlier in terms of Odie eyes.
- 15:17Speaker 1: But on Stark pulling out, it's a fairly selfless scene
- 15:20Speaker 1: because he could well go to another World Cup and
- 15:22Speaker 1: prove the difference. But it does give a couple of
- 15:24Speaker 1: the other bawlers a chance to chance to strine. I
- 15:27Speaker 1: had a chat to to Xavier Bartlett, I spoke to
- 15:30Speaker 1: Nathan Ellison. They're both very much aware that this Indian
- 15:33Speaker 1: series could be the make or break for them in terms.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Of what's ahead.
- 15:36Speaker 1: It could be could be the difference to a World
- 15:37Speaker 1: Cup if for those two and for others that are
- 15:41Speaker 1: vying for a World Cup selection.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Yeah, look and definitely those names you mentioned, Xavier Bartlett,
- 15:48Speaker 4: Nathan Ellis, you're throwing Spencer Johnson, You're throwing Joy Richardson
- 15:54Speaker 4: in all three formats. So if I if I'm you
- 15:57Speaker 4: know and Nathanalys, you know, there's no reason why that
- 15:59Speaker 4: guy can't play test cricket. And sometimes people get unfairly
- 16:04Speaker 4: pigeonholed to be a one day specialist at T twenty
- 16:07Speaker 4: specialist because he's got a great slow ball.
- 16:10Speaker 3: You know, it doesn't mean that you're going to play
- 16:11Speaker 3: T twenty cricket.
- 16:12Speaker 4: So if I'm a Bartlet, if I'm a Nathan Ellis,
- 16:15Speaker 4: if I'm a Spencer Johnson, I'd be making sure that
- 16:18Speaker 4: I'm practicing and executing all my plans in all three
- 16:21Speaker 4: formats because if you get that opportunity, you get yourself
- 16:23Speaker 4: in a a T twenty squad, fifty other squad, you know,
- 16:28Speaker 4: an Australian Test squad, you can hang on there and
- 16:31Speaker 4: have a nice career because as I mentioned, you know,
- 16:34Speaker 4: there's going to be a heap of gaps, gaps that
- 16:36Speaker 4: are going to open up in the next couple of years.
- 16:40Speaker 1: We've talked about the I suppose the audiov's time for
- 16:43Speaker 1: the main course, the ashes, and there's been some news
- 16:46Speaker 1: in terms of I suppose in the last week Pat
- 16:50Speaker 1: Cummins will miss those white ball series. You know, some
- 16:53Speaker 1: I suppose a bit of flare up in the back
- 16:56Speaker 1: on the other side of the world. We had Ben
- 16:58Speaker 1: Stokes in the final tests of that thrilling series between
- 17:02Speaker 1: India and England. He's in rehabiting himself. Ready, are we
- 17:07Speaker 1: concerned it all about coming? What happens there? Do you
- 17:10Speaker 1: think it's clearly a wise moving terms of giving him
- 17:13Speaker 1: the time to get right because this is the main
- 17:15Speaker 1: main fair for the summer.
- 17:16Speaker 2: But what are your thoughts there?
- 17:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, look, if he's feeling discomfort and he's
- 17:21Speaker 4: got some issues and some stress related issues in the
- 17:24Speaker 4: lower back. You know, I actually know personally that going
- 17:28Speaker 4: through two major back issues. I think one when I
- 17:31Speaker 4: was seventeen one again when I was about twenty four.
- 17:34Speaker 4: The thing I am surprised about that it's come later
- 17:36Speaker 4: in his career. You know, most bowlers when they get
- 17:39Speaker 4: to the age of twenty seven, their body is quite
- 17:42Speaker 4: hardened and that they're like seasoned. That's probably the best
- 17:45Speaker 4: way to explain it. So you know, you'll pick up
- 17:48Speaker 4: more soft muscle tear injuries as opposed to structural issues.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Unless it's a force issue with slamming down you ankle
- 17:55Speaker 4: like I did, you might argue as well, that's slamming
- 17:58Speaker 4: down your front foot. That pressure gets dispelled else elsewhere,
- 18:02Speaker 4: which it does to the lower back. With Pat Cummins,
- 18:06Speaker 4: he's obviously felt some discomfort down there.
- 18:08Speaker 3: There's some there's there's some issues.
- 18:10Speaker 4: He's looking now to focus on the Test matches and
- 18:13Speaker 4: there's nothing wrong with that. You know, there's no point
- 18:15Speaker 4: coming back too early, playing the one day is and
- 18:18Speaker 4: not be ready for the Test matches. So I just
- 18:22Speaker 4: really hope Pat Commons gives himself the amount of time
- 18:24Speaker 4: to be one hundred percent rare and he go. And
- 18:27Speaker 4: what I've been saying in the last twenty four to
- 18:29Speaker 4: forty eight hours is that if he's not ready first
- 18:31Speaker 4: Test and one hundred percent, leave him ntil the second Test.
- 18:34Speaker 4: He's not ready second Test, leave until the third. If
- 18:36Speaker 4: he's ready to go first Test, one hundred percent charge in.
- 18:40Speaker 4: What you don't want to do is go in ninety
- 18:42Speaker 4: percent first Test, get injured, maybe in the first innings,
- 18:47Speaker 4: the second innings, you know you're down a bowler, and
- 18:49Speaker 4: then you've lost the whole Australian summer. You know you've
- 18:52Speaker 4: lost the captain, you've lost your strike bowler. So time
- 18:56Speaker 4: is of essence here, going to make sure that he
- 18:57Speaker 4: gives himself every opportunity and Pat comes a smart guy
- 19:00Speaker 4: you know it's not his first mango season. He's been
- 19:02Speaker 4: around the bush a long time now, and you know
- 19:05Speaker 4: he'll sort of make sure he makes that right.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Coll I guess we've also seen Josh hazel Wood last
- 19:10Speaker 1: summer he missed a test with a calf issue.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Scott Boland has been the premier reserve.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Mitch Dark just keeps trucking on, but Scott Boland is
- 19:18Speaker 1: clearly there as the as the standing for one of
- 19:22Speaker 1: the fast bowlers. But having can miss your eyes, I
- 19:25Speaker 1: suppose further afield the last couple of years, who would
- 19:28Speaker 1: be the next gap of the rank?
- 19:29Speaker 4: Is it?
- 19:30Speaker 1: Is it Fergus O'Neill who had that great sort of
- 19:32Speaker 1: shield season for Victoria, and he has had a couple
- 19:34Speaker 1: of great seasons in domestic cricket. You look at dogget
- 19:39Speaker 1: who obviously has traveled with the tour with the squad
- 19:41Speaker 1: sewn Abbott has been a regular sort of touring squad member.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Who are you looking at in terms of possible and
- 19:48Speaker 1: fingers crossed touching wood over here, but replacements needs be.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Well, all those names you mentioned, you know Doggett and
- 19:55Speaker 4: that that was because he wasn't on my radar, But
- 19:58Speaker 4: he's been a guy it's been around a long time
- 20:00Speaker 4: now and has always been you know there and thereabouts.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Abbott who's been around the squad, a lot Spencer Johnson
- 20:06Speaker 4: as I mentioned before, Guys like a you know Nathan Ellis,
- 20:13Speaker 4: you know Richardson who has done very well.
- 20:16Speaker 3: I mean he's almost like a pink ball specialist as well.
- 20:20Speaker 4: So pending fitness Australia, I've got probably four or five
- 20:24Speaker 4: guys that can lean on. Of course, Scott Bolan is
- 20:26Speaker 4: the next cab off the rank and it's funny that
- 20:29Speaker 4: when we either as a journalist or as a broadcast
- 20:31Speaker 4: to say that he's the replacement, which which essentially is
- 20:35Speaker 4: he would be any team across the world probably in
- 20:38Speaker 4: any format, to be truthful, would.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Be in the starting eleven.
- 20:43Speaker 4: But unfortunately, a bit like McGill the warn era, he
- 20:46Speaker 4: was probably born in the in the wrong era and
- 20:48Speaker 4: you can't go away from star K's would come as
- 20:51Speaker 4: they are first picked. Bolan would definitely be the next
- 20:54Speaker 4: cab off the rank. And then if one of the
- 20:56Speaker 4: other bowlers go down, then those names that I mentioned
- 20:59Speaker 4: will have to ensure that firstly that they're fully fit
- 21:02Speaker 4: and secondly that they're rare and to go.
- 21:04Speaker 3: So, like I've always said, my advice to.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Any young first class cricketer, if you're out there, work
- 21:10Speaker 4: on your skills, work on making sure that you're not
- 21:12Speaker 4: just a fast ball of of you know what. Work
- 21:14Speaker 4: on having a really good work ethic, whether it's working
- 21:17Speaker 4: on your lower batting, work on your fielding, and just
- 21:20Speaker 4: having the next factor about you because you know you
- 21:22Speaker 4: just might get that call up and if you get
- 21:24Speaker 4: yourself an opportunity around the test squad, those options are
- 21:27Speaker 4: definitely there.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It feels like Grandtog Day.
- 21:32Speaker 1: This time twelve months ago we were pondering who would
- 21:35Speaker 1: be in the Australian top order. Twelve months on, we're
- 21:38Speaker 1: still pondering that. I did chat briefly to both Sam
- 21:42Speaker 1: constanscenter Manus Lava Shane last week for broadcast. Those interviews
- 21:47Speaker 1: will becoming at some stage in the next few months.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Manus was talking about trying to take it a little
- 21:54Speaker 1: lighter rather than be so so dedicated and trying to
- 21:57Speaker 1: do everything right. He was trying to find a way
- 21:59Speaker 1: to free himself. Did take hat trick in domestic cricket
- 22:02Speaker 1: to I notice the other night in Brisbane, So that's
- 22:05Speaker 1: going to be a good, good boost for the confidence.
- 22:07Speaker 2: But how do you see it what unfolds? Is it
- 22:11Speaker 2: someone like a with a rod?
- 22:12Speaker 1: Is Is it a Jason Singer who who obviously had
- 22:15Speaker 1: a great sort of domestic season, who comes into this team,
- 22:17Speaker 1: and that's alongside those when kauhas are at the top.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Well of first on the last they mentioned Jason Singer.
- 22:24Speaker 4: You know he's putting his hand up, isn't he. You know,
- 22:26Speaker 4: guys are scoring runs at the top of the order one, one,
- 22:30Speaker 4: two through or even four could potentially have an opportunity
- 22:33Speaker 4: to go up in that number two spot. Kawhi d
- 22:36Speaker 4: obviously at number one. Sam Constance, look if if he
- 22:41Speaker 4: keeps asking questions, if he keeps scoring runs, there was
- 22:44Speaker 4: there's been a bit of conjecture around the way he
- 22:45Speaker 4: was scoring runs. There's been a bit of talk has
- 22:47Speaker 4: he got the right technique to play test cricket. I
- 22:51Speaker 4: actually think he has and I'm actually a big fan
- 22:53Speaker 4: of Sam conscience. I think he's got a lot to
- 22:55Speaker 4: offer the Australian cricket team. And look, you know he
- 22:57Speaker 4: was only young when he first came in. I know
- 22:59Speaker 4: it's twelve months down the track. But if if you
- 23:03Speaker 4: look back to that hype that happened at Boxing Day.
- 23:06Speaker 4: People still talking about it, and that's what you want.
- 23:08Speaker 4: You want young, exciting players that change the game, that
- 23:11Speaker 4: stand up and say I actually want to be counted.
- 23:14Speaker 4: He single handedly won that Test match. He put Boomera
- 23:18Speaker 4: off kilter. Boomra didn't know what to do, you know,
- 23:21Speaker 4: to think that he was going down and lapping him
- 23:23Speaker 4: and doing the reverse lap.
- 23:24Speaker 3: It's exciting cricket.
- 23:26Speaker 4: So thanks to Sam Constance and taking down Jeffer Boomer,
- 23:30Speaker 4: he actually want astray the Test.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Does that make him going to be in the Test
- 23:35Speaker 3: team for the next ten.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Years, Probably not, But what it does do it shows
- 23:38Speaker 4: me that it is not overawed by the situation. So
- 23:40Speaker 4: if he can just refine his skills, keep scoring runs,
- 23:44Speaker 4: keep scoring proper runs through you know, cover drives and
- 23:47Speaker 4: pool shots and not trying to be too funky all
- 23:49Speaker 4: the time, and he knows that, then I'd be going
- 23:53Speaker 4: with him because it's exciting, you know, to have a
- 23:57Speaker 4: player like usmon Kwhajor who is world class that could
- 23:59Speaker 4: gra after his innings, can bat the long hours to
- 24:02Speaker 4: score his big hundreds, and then you've got a guy
- 24:04Speaker 4: that can dominate from the other end and put the
- 24:07Speaker 4: pressure back a bit like bas ball. You know, it
- 24:09Speaker 4: could be Basball upon himself. So yeah, I'd begun with
- 24:14Speaker 4: like Sam Constance definitely.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Well, I was going to ask you that basball does
- 24:19Speaker 1: seem to polarize the credit world, but clearly it's prompted
- 24:22Speaker 1: an amazing amount of discussion over the last three or
- 24:25Speaker 1: so years. The McCallum Stokes rain in charge of English
- 24:30Speaker 1: cricket in red ball. We know now that bas has
- 24:33Speaker 1: got the white ball teams as well. Your thoughts where
- 24:38Speaker 1: does it sit and will it work down under?
- 24:41Speaker 4: Well, Look, bas ball, for those that don't know it is,
- 24:47Speaker 4: it's pretty much allowing the play absolute freedom.
- 24:51Speaker 3: That's all it is.
- 24:52Speaker 4: It's saying you go out and express you know yourself
- 24:55Speaker 4: as an athlete, as a batsman, to take on the bowler.
- 24:59Speaker 4: If you feel like hitting the ball of the six
- 25:01Speaker 4: first ball, if that's your best option, go out and
- 25:03Speaker 4: do it. What it isn't doing is going out and
- 25:06Speaker 4: saying slog every single ball that there's a difference, and
- 25:08Speaker 4: I think where people get mixed up between bas ball
- 25:12Speaker 4: and not proper batting and sometimes you know, it is
- 25:15Speaker 4: a very blurred line and we have seen some poor
- 25:18Speaker 4: shots from England when they've been five down, and you've
- 25:22Speaker 4: also got to think, okay, maybe now is not the
- 25:24Speaker 4: right time to go all that attack. Maybe we have
- 25:26Speaker 4: to look at the other options. So that's one thing
- 25:28Speaker 4: that they're trying to work through. But I like their
- 25:31Speaker 4: style of cricket. It's exciting. It's got a lot of
- 25:33Speaker 4: people talking. You're getting bums on seats, you know, people
- 25:36Speaker 4: come in to watch Zach Crawley come out, or Oli
- 25:40Speaker 4: Paper or Harry Brook go and smoke the first ball
- 25:43Speaker 4: for four or six in their innings. It's exciting cricket.
- 25:47Speaker 4: What I will say though, that if it doesn't work
- 25:49Speaker 4: the first or second Test, if they commit the bas
- 25:52Speaker 4: ball England and it doesn't work and they get risold
- 25:55Speaker 4: and they're all out for two hundred odd playing aggressive strokes,
- 26:00Speaker 4: what happens then? You know, do they go into their
- 26:02Speaker 4: shell or do they continue to do it? I think
- 26:04Speaker 4: they have to go. If they commit to basball, they
- 26:07Speaker 4: have to play ten ings of basball throughout the summer,
- 26:09Speaker 4: which could cost him. It may you know, it actually
- 26:13Speaker 4: may also win them, you know, an ashes series as well.
- 26:15Speaker 3: So but it's going to be exciting Cricket put it
- 26:18Speaker 3: that way.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I cannot wait for what's ahead and that first
- 26:21Speaker 1: Test note November twenty one. I think it is in
- 26:24Speaker 1: Perth and it should be a wonderful line. One last
- 26:26Speaker 1: one and thanks again for joining us on the follow
- 26:31Speaker 1: on Brett you talked about getting ressold. Now we had
- 26:34Speaker 1: a wonder from further down Under. In terms of Tasmania
- 26:37Speaker 1: the Apple As last year, Bo Webster slug from Snug
- 26:44Speaker 1: really exceled wonderful effort at the at the SCGEN and
- 26:49Speaker 1: continue to show his worth. Almost fell off when I
- 26:51Speaker 1: saw some elevens being noted earlier, you know, through August,
- 26:55Speaker 1: the speculation building up to the Ashes that there was
- 26:58Speaker 1: no place for Webster in the team. With a couple
- 27:01Speaker 1: of questions about some of those balls. Surely surely Bo
- 27:04Speaker 1: gets another run around, doesn't he.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Well, look, it's it's a tough one, isn't I would
- 27:09Speaker 4: love to have bow Webster in any team. I would
- 27:12Speaker 4: even have bow Webster potentially, but at the top of
- 27:15Speaker 4: the order. But unfortunately there's only eleven players that can
- 27:17Speaker 4: play on the field, and everyone we all do it,
- 27:21Speaker 4: I keep saying broadcast as journalists, we all pick our
- 27:24Speaker 4: eleven or this guy should be in, that guy should
- 27:26Speaker 4: be in, he should be in, and then we've got
- 27:29Speaker 4: to sit back and go, well, well, who's actually out.
- 27:32Speaker 4: You know, we can't pick. We've picked sixteen players and
- 27:34Speaker 4: you're going only play eleven. That's the That's a great
- 27:37Speaker 4: thing about cricket is that you're going you've only got
- 27:39Speaker 4: eleven players that can play the game. But just just
- 27:42Speaker 4: on bow Webster, you have to look at what can
- 27:45Speaker 4: a player offer. Very very aggressive with the bat. He
- 27:49Speaker 4: reminds me a lot of of a Kevin Peterson, a
- 27:53Speaker 4: bit of a Zach Crawley sort of tall, the enforcer,
- 27:58Speaker 4: long stride, Maddie Hayden like I think, you know, without
- 28:01Speaker 4: being you know too similar obviously right and left hand
- 28:05Speaker 4: type of thing, but you know, just the presence the
- 28:08Speaker 4: long levers. So definitely with the bat can take any
- 28:13Speaker 4: attack apart. You bowl short to him, you get punished,
- 28:16Speaker 4: you pitch a ball up, you get driven down the ground.
- 28:18Speaker 3: And because he's so tall.
- 28:20Speaker 4: The room for error as a fast bowler is a
- 28:25Speaker 4: lot greater when you're bowling to a guy that's got
- 28:28Speaker 4: long levers. He's got a long stride down the wicket,
- 28:30Speaker 4: and then then you throw the ball to him and
- 28:32Speaker 4: you can take wickets and bowl decent pace outswingers. That
- 28:37Speaker 4: what is he six foot seven or whatever? He is,
- 28:38Speaker 4: he's massive, So yes, I would love to see him
- 28:41Speaker 4: also in the squad. I don't know how he fits
- 28:44Speaker 4: in the team. I'm not sure how he doesn't fit
- 28:47Speaker 4: in the team. He's got to definitely be in the squad.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Well, look, Bret, it should be an amazing somebody.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Come. We kick off with the Asia Cup live on
- 28:55Speaker 1: k Sports every game later this week. That big one
- 28:58Speaker 1: on September fifteen over here September fourteen, over where you
- 29:02Speaker 1: are I think Pakistan versus India. Thanks so much as
- 29:05Speaker 1: always for joining the Follow on Cricket podcast and looking
- 29:08Speaker 1: forward to the summer ahead.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Thanks Courtney, always good to chat mate.
