- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Hey, I want to remind you you have
- 0:02Speaker 1: an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to see
- 0:04Speaker 1: Sarah Silverman live at acl Live on January fifth. And
- 0:10Speaker 1: this is how you can enter to try to win
- 0:12Speaker 1: a pair of tickets. If you don't already have the
- 0:14Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app, you download it. Then you would search AM
- 0:17Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone. You pull that up. There's a
- 0:20Speaker 1: red button with a little white microphone. You tap that
- 0:23Speaker 1: and then leave us some message. That's our talk back feature,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and you leave us the message saying, hey, I heard
- 0:27Speaker 1: you guys talking about it and heard the keyword. The
- 0:29Speaker 1: keyword today is zone, just like this radio station. So
- 0:34Speaker 1: that's it, the keyword there. Zone. Good luck to you.
- 0:36Speaker 1: All Right, we've heard some from a Vic Shaffer being
- 0:40Speaker 1: on the ramt and here's a good thing to bring
- 0:42Speaker 1: it all home, where Vick's talking about his basketball team
- 0:45Speaker 1: and how we're trying to get everyone to pay attention
- 0:48Speaker 1: to how good this Texas team is. The last part
- 0:50Speaker 1: of our of Vic Schafer's media opportunity.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Today, every kid's got a story how the game touches
- 0:57Speaker 2: them beyond the screaming kids and all that. Tomorrow some
- 1:01Speaker 2: kid may be touched. I mean, I'm sure that's not
- 1:03Speaker 2: lost on you and your staff, and probably not on
- 1:06Speaker 2: all the players. But to me, that's a pretty cool
- 1:09Speaker 2: moment for.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Kids, no doubt, And it won't be lost on my kids.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Uh they'll have a chance to maybe become somebody's role
- 1:17Speaker 3: model tomorrow. They'll have a chance to uh, you know,
- 1:21Speaker 3: maybe impact some young person's life tomorrow. Maybe it'll motivate
- 1:25Speaker 3: them to you know, do better in pe class or
- 1:29Speaker 3: maybe even to pick up a sport. But hopefully they'll
- 1:33Speaker 3: see how my kids respond to anything that may happen tomorrow,
- 1:38Speaker 3: whether it's adversity or success, to honor the game, to
- 1:42Speaker 3: respect the game. And so again, I think our style
- 1:47Speaker 3: of play will be fun for those kids. Hopefully we'll
- 1:50Speaker 3: play well. And so you're right, Roger, it's it's not
- 1:55Speaker 3: lost on me, my staff or our players.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Got some multitesking a little bit.
- 2:02Speaker 2: We are gonna chat with Layla soon. What do we
- 2:05Speaker 2: need to know about her as a person? What do
- 2:07Speaker 2: you remember in the recruiting process?
- 2:09Speaker 5: Who is she?
- 2:11Speaker 4: Man?
- 2:11Speaker 3: First, she's a great kid and comes from a tremendous family.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Incredible competitor, bless her heart, She's she's just had some
- 2:21Speaker 3: bad luck while she's been here, but I think she's
- 2:24Speaker 3: getting healthy, uh, Jeff, And uh, you know, if she
- 2:29Speaker 3: can get healthy and get back right like she was
- 2:32Speaker 3: in Michigan, she's going to really impact our team. But
- 2:36Speaker 3: just a really a kid that cares wants to be great.
- 2:43Speaker 3: You know, ask her about what she said after she
- 2:46Speaker 3: was here for three weeks, you know, in that in
- 2:50Speaker 3: in in uh in just the you know, the short
- 2:54Speaker 3: time that she had been here, the difference between here
- 2:57Speaker 3: and and where she was. I mean, she's really she's
- 3:01Speaker 3: really a cool kid, and we've really enjoyed working with her.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Again tough, you know, Uh, she's just a really I
- 3:14Speaker 3: think she's a really an all around great kid and
- 3:17Speaker 3: again a product of great parents, as most of our
- 3:21Speaker 3: kids are, all of our kids are. I mean, we're
- 3:24Speaker 3: really blessed with some incredible families that have brought these
- 3:28Speaker 3: kids along and they're a product of how they were raised.
- 3:32Speaker 3: So you're gonna enjoy your time with her, and man,
- 3:36Speaker 3: I hope we can get her where she can be
- 3:38Speaker 3: that player that she's been, because that kid can really
- 3:42Speaker 3: impact our team in our season.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Be I kind of want to ask you how you're
- 3:47Speaker 4: going to utilize your team speed. You know, in the
- 3:51Speaker 4: open floor of Brianna has had a couple of where
- 3:54Speaker 4: she's going coast to coast real fast. How can you
- 3:58Speaker 4: how can you utilize that? You guys move forward?
- 4:01Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, Uh, we were on the bus going
- 4:05Speaker 3: back to the hotel the other night or going to
- 4:07Speaker 3: the airport the other night after the game, and I
- 4:09Speaker 3: don't know, Coach Lovado had seen something on Twitter about
- 4:13Speaker 3: somebody had given three thoughts to after the postgame, and
- 4:17Speaker 3: one of them was, we need to learn to convert
- 4:20Speaker 3: uh our our our turnovers that were causing into layups.
- 4:25Speaker 3: And I'm like, Okay, that guy, you know, whoever that is,
- 4:28Speaker 3: they're they're coaching, you know, they're they're they're seeing something
- 4:32Speaker 3: that probably every other coach in America would love to
- 4:35Speaker 3: to do. And and so I think that's, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 3: it's it's a legitimate, uh thought. And we do have
- 4:42Speaker 3: some great speed. Shay got out in transition the other
- 4:45Speaker 3: night for a breakaway lay up ran by everybody. As
- 4:48Speaker 3: we've all seen or do you know several times, you know,
- 4:54Speaker 3: uh Bree, Bree can be Rory on steroids sometimes and
- 4:59Speaker 3: you know Rory's we all know she's getting closer and
- 5:03Speaker 3: closer to her old self, but she still got a
- 5:07Speaker 3: little ways to go. But Preston is fast. I mean
- 5:10Speaker 3: she's really fast. You put her in Shay on the floor. Now,
- 5:13Speaker 3: that's the two fastest kids we've had, you know, we
- 5:16Speaker 3: have on the team, and so it's really hard to
- 5:21Speaker 3: deal with with with Preston in the open floor. So
- 5:25Speaker 3: you know, it's on our practice plan today, Bob, it's
- 5:27Speaker 3: a great question. We're gonna work really hard on converting
- 5:31Speaker 3: turnovers into transition points. And again, the biggest thing is
- 5:36Speaker 3: though we want to take really good shots, no matter
- 5:39Speaker 3: if it's off of a turnover or in the half court.
- 5:43Speaker 3: We want to really get our shot. And you have
- 5:47Speaker 3: to be careful on quick shots. You know, you don't
- 5:50Speaker 3: want to just shoot it quick just because you can.
- 5:53Speaker 3: You know you can. You need to make sure that, Okay,
- 5:56Speaker 3: is this a great shot. If it's a great shot, hating,
- 5:59Speaker 3: no problem, But if it's if it's a good or
- 6:02Speaker 3: a contested, decent shot, well then let's make sure we
- 6:05Speaker 3: got somebody that might be able to rebound the miss.
- 6:09Speaker 3: You know, I thought the other night, the one negative
- 6:11Speaker 3: in the DePaul game, I thought we took some really
- 6:14Speaker 3: poor shots early, hotly contested fifteen footers like sixteen seventeen footers, Like,
- 6:21Speaker 3: we don't need to be doing that. Like we're gonna
- 6:24Speaker 3: get a good wife. If we'll have a little patience,
- 6:27Speaker 3: we're gonna get some really good looks. And so again,
- 6:32Speaker 3: I think you're right, and it'll be something we continue
- 6:34Speaker 3: to work on here, because I think we're gonna be
- 6:36Speaker 3: able to turn people over quite a bit this year.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Hey, coach, I know the focus probably right now is Tartleton,
- 6:42Speaker 5: but if you look at the schedule, you got five
- 6:45Speaker 5: away games coming up where you will say it.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah, And I didn't tell Kirk about the acc SEC
- 6:51Speaker 3: challenge with Notre Dame on the road either. So I
- 6:54Speaker 3: think we're good, Kirk, Just so you know, I think
- 6:56Speaker 3: we got enough to get us ready.
- 7:00Speaker 5: As Yeah, what I'm basically just what do you? What
- 7:02Speaker 5: are your thoughts? What are you trying to get out
- 7:04Speaker 5: of those games? I know you got You're probably gonna
- 7:06Speaker 5: get West Virginia two, that's a possibility in estrel, So
- 7:08Speaker 5: what do you what are you hoping to get out
- 7:10Speaker 5: of these next five games?
- 7:12Speaker 3: I hope we win them. You know, those are all
- 7:15Speaker 3: gonna be against quality opponents ranked in the top ten twenty,
- 7:21Speaker 3: and so you know, you know, you know you're gonna
- 7:25Speaker 3: get somebody's best shot every night. And now you're gonna
- 7:28Speaker 3: get somebody's best shot, and they're one of the top
- 7:29Speaker 3: twenty teams in the country. So I think, you know,
- 7:33Speaker 3: for us, it's it's learning to get yourself ready for
- 7:37Speaker 3: that great group because you're fixing to get sixteen of
- 7:39Speaker 3: them in the league, and so you know, I'm hoping
- 7:44Speaker 3: to win them. I'm hoping as we go. You know,
- 7:46Speaker 3: we've spaced out these games. We're gonna play want Wednesday,
- 7:49Speaker 3: We're not gonna play the following Friday, and that's gonna
- 7:51Speaker 3: give me some good practice time, some good film time
- 7:54Speaker 3: with my team where hopefully we're gonna be able to
- 7:57Speaker 3: get better. And so by the time we were into
- 8:00Speaker 3: that tournament and play back to back to back, we'll
- 8:03Speaker 3: be ready to go, we'll be conditioned, and we'll be
- 8:07Speaker 3: in a good space. Because then you go from there,
- 8:10Speaker 3: you go on the road to Notre Dame, you're at
- 8:12Speaker 3: James Madison. You know you've got to go to Richmond.
- 8:18Speaker 3: You have South Dakota State, So it gets noticeably harder
- 8:24Speaker 3: before Christmas. So we've we've stared at these and and
- 8:30Speaker 3: so we I'm hopeful that in the next nine days
- 8:33Speaker 3: we're going to get better.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So there he is, the passion and the fury that
- 8:37Speaker 1: is Vick Schaeffer, the Texas women's basketball coach. Can and
- 8:41Speaker 1: I'll be back to a wrap up today's edition of
- 8:43Speaker 1: the program here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
