- 0:00Welcome to Season 2 of Go Wildly podcast.
- 0:03We are Emily and Heather, 2 childhood friends who carry a
- 0:06mic into wild places like rivers, trails, and forests with
- 0:10wild people to host raw, honest conversations about adventure,
- 0:15healing, identity, and the transformative power of nature.
- 0:19In this season, we're centering the voices of people who call
- 0:22Southern Oregon home. Outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor
- 0:25professionals whose lives have been shaped, changed, or are
- 0:28continually influenced by time outside.
- 0:31Come along as together we go wildly.
- 0:35Hey, you wildly wonder. Thank you so very much for
- 0:39listening to the podcast. It means the world to us.
- 0:42OK, add a little mission. Pause the podcast right here.
- 0:46Make sure that you're subscribed to this guy, OK?
- 0:49It's going to be a fun time over here and if you so wish, we
- 0:52would love a five star review or whatever your heart's inclined
- 0:56to do. Also, leaving us a review truly
- 0:59helps the algorithm and we appreciate you doing that.
- 1:02Thank you so very much. Also, little tidbit over on
- 1:05Instagram, we're having so much fun over there.
- 1:07Lots of behind the scene footage, some PO VS It's just
- 1:10some fun unhinged content. If you love the pod, that's
- 1:14where we go wildly for sure. So don't forget to follow us
- 1:17over there. OK, back to the show, what that
- 1:20was about what we just make sure that we said the mic is on or
- 1:26the mic's working. Are they on?
- 1:29Yes, they are on in stereo. OK.
- 1:35I am CI am actually ARC and I'm B in your OK, so you our OK
- 1:47filming to this secret spot. Well, it's not really a secret,
- 1:52but. Don't step in that shit.
- 1:55EW, that's a dog poo poo in the middle of the trail.
- 1:58How dare you. Yeah, this.
- 2:04I mean, all last summer I could hardly get this little spot that
- 2:08I like because people are down here a lot, which I was just
- 2:11telling Emily me before I turn, we turn the camera on that
- 2:17that's the whole point of the pod.
- 2:19And you know, not, I was going to say unfortunately,
- 2:21unfortunately, but like the whole point of the pod is to
- 2:23inspire people to get outside more.
- 2:25So the whole point of our like lives.
- 2:26Yeah, yeah. It's like inspiring people to
- 2:30experience outdoors because it's amazing and wonderful and great
- 2:33in a healthy way that supports the environment and stuff, you
- 2:35know, of course and safe and safe, but still like, so that's
- 2:40awesome that people were taking up my quote UN quote secret
- 2:44secret spot this last summer. So, you know, I don't know.
- 2:50And it's a fine line. We were just talking about that
- 2:52because there was a video that went viral somewhere in the
- 2:55outdoor world of a gal talking about like keeping your secret
- 2:59spots secret. But like, that's gatekeeping and
- 3:04like everybody should be able to experience the outdoors.
- 3:08However, we just need to learn proper etiquette in the
- 3:11outdoors. Absolutely, Because so much of
- 3:13that gatekeeping, while it is in some ways selfish so that people
- 3:18can keep a place for themselves, it also is underneath that like
- 3:24an intention of conservation, of conserving the place.
- 3:26Because when beautiful places get overrun with humans, it more
- 3:32often than not loses its beauty. It gets covered in trash and it
- 3:36gets over industrialized and developed and we lose that.
- 3:44That's why innate beauty, and that's why protecting like
- 3:48public lands is so important. Yeah.
- 3:51But hopefully we in like management of public lands.
- 3:54So like, so just hopefully we're all able to like, I don't know,
- 4:01just take in that etiquette of what's needed.
- 4:03Like if somebody gets inspired to get off the couch and you
- 4:07know, get outside for a few hours, great.
- 4:11That's exactly what we're trying to do this down here.
- 4:15I thought so, and I hoped so. That looks cute.
- 4:20But, you know, we got to do it in a healthy way.
- 4:24I don't know. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:26We have to have places that are ready to receive large loads of
- 4:32people and are large. Loads of foot.
- 4:38And are are maintained, are taken care of, that are well
- 4:43funded so that people can have good jobs out here maintaining
- 4:47the lands that we want to recreate and relax on and.
- 4:52This landscape really changed. Yeah, from high.
- 4:56Water from high water, Yeah, this little gravel gravely bar
- 5:00here is usually not that big. It's the perfect size for us.
- 5:05It is. Size matters.
- 5:07That it does. That's what I keep hearing.
- 5:09I want this house across the way, though.
- 5:11We'll talk a little bit about this like I would love this.
- 5:14Yeah, a little deck. I love me a little deck.
- 5:18I thought you said size matters. But I love me a little deck
- 5:24DECK. Yeah, size still matters on
- 5:27that. I have a huge deck.
- 5:29You want a little deck? I mean, I don't want to.
- 5:32Is my deck too big for you? No, your deck fits your house.
- 5:37That deck over there is small and mighty.
- 5:40It's, you know, it's working with a lot.
- 5:42It's working. It's working with a lot.
- 5:44You know, it's, it's what it, it's blending into its
- 5:47surroundings. Yeah, it's sitting alone by the
- 5:50river, which is what I love to do also.
- 5:53Yeah. I love to sit alone by the
- 5:55river. So let's do it.
- 5:56Let's set up our little chair skis.
- 5:58I also love to sit with you by the river.
- 6:01Yeah, so special, So special. This.
- 6:06This spot's going to be so blown out this summer.
- 6:08Yeah, yeah. Because it's now the hot in the
- 6:11summer, but there's room for like two or three groups here.
- 6:14We should sit here and put the camera in the shade.
- 6:17Yeah. Because I'd love to be in the
- 6:20sun. Yeah, there's me too.
- 6:21There's room for plenty of plenty of people.
- 6:26I think there is for room for plenty of little groups here,
- 6:28which is good. Which is also something we got
- 6:30to note that like just to go into the wild knowing that you
- 6:35could share space with somebody. And it's an opportunity for you
- 6:40to learn to like exercise, social exercise, your friendship
- 6:45making, exercise, building community exercise, you know,
- 6:50just like tolerance. Absolutely.
- 6:54So you never know if your best friend is going to be behind
- 6:58that tree. Yeah, it might be a really cool
- 7:00connection, but for me, in my real estate world, you just
- 7:03never know when somebody's going to be paying you thousands of
- 7:06dollars. To hang out with you to.
- 7:09Pretty much hang out and we'll just like go shoot the shit and
- 7:12like drive around and look at places like, yeah, it's a, it's
- 7:15a thing, yeah. So to me.
- 7:22I probably can't count on one hand how many times I've met
- 7:27somebody when I was out in the outdoors hanging out.
- 7:33What about that? Became like a great friend.
- 7:36Oh my God, yeah, the. First, call back to.
- 7:38We this, we don't know when this episode in particular is going
- 7:41to come out, so the timeline is going to be skewed here, but we
- 7:45just celebrated our the anniversary of publishing our
- 7:49first episode. And we got 1000 followers.
- 7:53Thank you, thank you guys. Thank, thank you.
- 7:56That's. Like, really wild.
- 7:58I know it. Is they're all very wildly.
- 8:01I'm very grateful. Me too, and all organic, all
- 8:04people who just actually found us grassroots babies like us.
- 8:09No paid advertising. None.
- 8:11I mean, what have we? We've probably spent what, a
- 8:14couple 1000 bucks? In producing, Yeah.
- 8:18Oh, maybe not even that. Yeah.
- 8:20So like, this is grassroots, baby.
- 8:22Yeah. And we're.
- 8:23No, you know, I don't know. It's just a little time, right?
- 8:26I guess time is money if you count.
- 8:27That, but entirely, I mean, yeah, I, I quit basically a full
- 8:31time job to do this unpaid to build it right.
- 8:36So time it time absolutely is money.
- 8:40Yeah. And also we we get to choose how
- 8:43we spend our time. And I, well, I'm fortunate
- 8:48enough to be in a position that I can make that choice, right?
- 8:51And I, but yet it doesn't mean it's not a sacrifice, right?
- 8:56But I I chosen sacrifice. Oh my God, I thought you were
- 8:59going to say chode. Chode no.
- 9:01You did though. I know.
- 9:04But anyway, so yeah, we just celebrated the one year
- 9:08anniversary of publishing our first episode.
- 9:11And to that, in that same vein of talking about making friends
- 9:17when we're out doing adventures, the first episode that we went
- 9:21and filmed, which was not the first episode that we published,
- 9:25but the first episode that we went out and filmed, if you
- 9:29remember it, it's episode 4, I believe, with Diana Mutula.
- 9:34And we are sitting on the top of Bolt Mountain and this lovely
- 9:41young couple arrives and approaches us and asks what
- 9:44we're doing. And we tell them that we're out
- 9:47filming a podcast and give the whole spiel.
- 9:50You can hear it in the episode. And so we filmed that like in
- 9:56February of last year of 2024 and then in like August of or or
- 10:09not of 2024. Should we kind of face each
- 10:11other? Sure.
- 10:12And then so like 6 months later I'm out on a trail run with a
- 10:19new friend of a friend whose husband is the a Co worker of
- 10:23this now mutual friend. And we start talking and I tell
- 10:27her that I Co host this podcast with Heather and she says Oh my
- 10:30gosh, I met you on top of Bolt Mountain six months ago when you
- 10:35were filming your first episode. That's so.
- 10:38Cool. And now we're in a in a running
- 10:41group together, and we run together almost every Sunday,
- 10:44and we met on the top of a mountain randomly.
- 10:48We were otherwise essentially alone.
- 10:49These people arrived, we made friendly friends, and now we're
- 10:53actually friends. How?
- 10:56Cute. Isn't that cute?
- 10:57Yes, we're such a meet cute. I have yet to meet them.
- 11:01Oh my gosh, really? Well, I mean other than.
- 11:04Obviously you were there because I.
- 11:05Haven't been on a group run, which they're Sundays now.
- 11:08Yeah, Sundays. Sundays like 9:00 AM today.
- 11:12Last yesterday was 9. 15 I've been churching it up.
- 11:15Yeah. But I'd go to dirt church.
- 11:17Which also is depending on when this episode comes out.
- 11:20We also just recently interviewed somebody who we met
- 11:24on the side of the river randomly.
- 11:26We were essentially alone, made conversation, became friends,
- 11:30invited him to record an episode with the podcast, and after we
- 11:35were done recording, we put together that him and Heather go
- 11:38to the same church. Yeah, it was cute.
- 11:41It was so. Cute.
- 11:41It was so cute, like the outdoors are bringing people
- 11:45together, people who may have may have otherwise crossed
- 11:50paths, who knows, but they're meant to meet.
- 11:53I was talking about this with my mom yesterday, that there's all
- 11:59these, you know, Venn diagrams of people and community and
- 12:03friends. And we overlap with some, but
- 12:06some are just like on this periphery that we've been in the
- 12:09same place at the same time, but we've never actually met.
- 12:13And So what does that really help you believe in that we are
- 12:18actually supposed to meet the people that we meet.
- 12:21And because there's people who are so close to meeting us but
- 12:26never do, or never do until like way later.
- 12:30In my time. And yeah, that there was there
- 12:33was a meant to be time and a meant to be placed to meet these
- 12:36people that have been satelliting your world.
- 12:44You put it in camera. Heather is the best.
- 12:47Our camera management really couldn't do this without her.
- 12:53It's kind of a little. I wish we had a.
- 12:55We need to get a bigger tripod. We do need a bigger tripod.
- 12:58A smaller tripod. Size matters.
- 13:02Size matters. Sorry guys, I'm trying to figure
- 13:04out a really good spot. Don't want it to go in the
- 13:08drink? Do you want like a big rock to
- 13:11set it on? I think right here.
- 13:13I can get you a big rock. This feels.
- 13:15Oh, this feels good. This feels.
- 13:17Good. Oh yeah.
- 13:18I'm on a Rock Karen that feels real good.
- 13:20What's your opinion on Rock Karen's?
- 13:22Some people. That's another, like,
- 13:24controversial subject for the outdoors.
- 13:27Yeah, challenges leave no trace And also I would much I I
- 13:32appreciate Rock Karen's as trail markers on designated trails
- 13:38like that. The the land has been used as a
- 13:42trail for long time. Trail is identifiable but maybe
- 13:47gets skewed here and there like you got to scramble up a rock or
- 13:51something. I appreciate rock Cairns as
- 13:54trail markers in those cases. Weave our feet together.
- 14:01Love it, but I don't really like them because just decorative.
- 14:06Yeah, I love it. I'm very satisfied.
- 14:09I don't mind them like at a river spot like this because
- 14:12like that's what I encourage. Like if I forget to bring like a
- 14:15toy. Yeah, with the kids, it's like
- 14:17built. Try to build a rock Cairn or
- 14:18like a rock. But then knock it down when
- 14:21you're done. I don't know.
- 14:22We've left Jenga yet. Yeah, He ends up knocking him
- 14:28down anyways. I don't think we've ever like
- 14:30left anything like too crazy. And this is a really like as
- 14:35soon as somebody leaves, somebody comes.
- 14:37Yeah, exactly. Totally.
- 14:38You know, unless it's like, dark.
- 14:40And they're going to alter the landscape in their use also.
- 14:43And I'd much rather leave a rock Karen then trash.
- 14:48Absolutely. So if you feel the like knock
- 14:51you off. Yeah, if you feel like you do
- 14:53need to leave a trace, leave a rock, Karen.
- 14:55Don't leave trash. Yeah, we've actually don't.
- 14:57They are not equivalent, not equivalent, but we've actually
- 15:00thought about is this turning into a wildly US episode?
- 15:03Well, we're good. We're about to spiral back to
- 15:05you, but don't you worry. Didn't we talk about potentially
- 15:09like putting like a QR code on rocks and leaving them at our
- 15:14spots and that's, that was a little like.
- 15:16Like, yeah, that's not like that's not kind.
- 15:18Of like geocachy, but those are I feel like those geocaching
- 15:23situations are. They're very discreet and
- 15:26they're contained. It's not like on display, right?
- 15:32You really have to fucking look for it, right?
- 15:34Right. From what I understand.
- 15:35Yeah. No, no, no.
- 15:35It's like. I've never done it, but.
- 15:37Like in a tree like. Yeah, yeah, I've found I do have
- 15:41a favorite geocache that I found randomly one day on the lower
- 15:45rogue and I do visit it almost every time that I'm down there.
- 15:52They're kind of fun. It's like a scavenger hunt, but
- 15:54like well contained and well like.
- 15:58And like kind of silly and I like the take an item, leave an
- 16:04item vibe. And so to have this one that I
- 16:07return to all the time, I can see like, oh, that's still in
- 16:10there. Oh, somebody took that thing
- 16:12from last time I was here. And it's, I think it's like a
- 16:16cute secret secret admirer secret message in a bottle.
- 16:22Kind of thing. Yeah, it's kind of fun.
- 16:23It adds a layer of whimsy. Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:26And yeah, but. Yeah, but I do, I really admire
- 16:34rock balancing. Like rock Cairns can just be
- 16:38like, you know, flat rocks sitting on top of each other,
- 16:40but rock balancing where there's like an odd shaped rock on a
- 16:44Flat Rock on its tip and then. Just the tip.
- 16:49Just the tip on the rock. See how it feels?
- 16:51Yeah, well, y'all. Hey there, you may have figured
- 16:58out that today's episode is just Heather and I sitting down with
- 17:04each other to actually learn more about my esteemed Co host
- 17:09here. And the other half of this whole
- 17:10thing? Heather White, Someone who loves
- 17:14to steal attention but not so much receive attention.
- 17:19So that is accurate. I will admit my shortcomings.
- 17:24That's the most important thing. That's where ADHD.
- 17:29One moment I have to update Emily.
- 17:32I just, I've just bought A Court of Thorns and Roses.
- 17:36Oh, for your first time? For my first like getting into
- 17:39fantasy book and like to break my scoliosis.
- 17:42Excellent. Which is, you know, scrolling.
- 17:44Yeah, doom scrolling totally has broken Mat.
- 17:47I am totally in like all you need is a good book to like,
- 17:51yes, kind of rewire some things. Yeah, I'm don't know why I
- 17:55didn't do it sooner. Because you were waiting for the
- 17:57right time. Yeah, but it had to be a good
- 17:59book. Like, yeah, best sellers are
- 18:00best sellers for a reason. Yeah.
- 18:02There there is a reason why the ACOTAR series has a chokehold on
- 18:09women. And women, yeah, I'm just
- 18:12getting to like the mid of the book where it's they start to
- 18:16heat up. OK, Yeah, yeah, it's a slow
- 18:18start, but then you're going to speed right through.
- 18:24Anyway, it's been great. I just want to say because
- 18:26Emily, I think you sent me that. But yeah, I just want to say
- 18:30like, because I'm like, my mind is like, oh, can't wait to get
- 18:33home. Then we can sneak in a chapter
- 18:35or two like, but it's been great for that, good and bad because
- 18:38like. It's a different kind of
- 18:41distraction. Yeah, well, when you're online,
- 18:43you know when you're it's windy, sorry guys.
- 18:46When you're online and you're like brand and media is online
- 18:50and stuff like you do need to scroll to a certain extent to
- 18:52see kind of what's trending and like.
- 18:54You need to research the market. It's like researching yes, but I
- 18:58just get into it for dopamine. It's while I'm like, like tired
- 19:03at night, but like, and then I've tried to read nonfict or
- 19:07not. Yeah, nonfiction.
- 19:08Yeah, art. Self help.
- 19:10OK. So and that just doesn't hit the
- 19:12same. Yeah, no, there's a there's a
- 19:14time of day and time within your energy.
- 19:17That is the right time to receive self help.
- 19:20Yeah, yeah, yeah. Evening time and like needing
- 19:23dopamine time. No, don't try.
- 19:26Don't try to help yourself. I used to.
- 19:28So I used to read a lot of self like.
- 19:31I haven't read a fantasy or I haven't read a like story book.
- 19:35What is that nonfiction? I'm see I'm not a book but I
- 19:38like reading. But anyway, I just haven't read
- 19:41a. Fiction is.
- 19:42Real false. So fiction.
- 19:44I haven't read a fiction novel, probably since Mary a lot.
- 19:50Yeah, yeah, because. That's where I had like the time
- 19:52to really like, sink into things.
- 19:53Where you had downtime. And I you didn't have cell
- 19:56phone, which is amazing and you have to be.
- 19:59Offline. And books are books are the
- 20:02original scroll scroll. Well, actually, I guess scrolls
- 20:07were the original scrolls. And before that tablets.
- 20:10Yeah. Anyways, Heather is as Grants
- 20:14Pass as Grants Pass gets. Are you sure?
- 20:20Because we'll get into it. We'll get into it.
- 20:23Born and raised here, daughter of a hunter, fisherman and
- 20:27forager who spent her childhood camping, rafting and backpacking
- 20:32into spots that rarely had a trail to follow.
- 20:35Now doing the same thing with her kids.
- 20:37Her dad taught her early that Southern Oregon isn't just home,
- 20:41it's the best place on earth. She believed him then, and she
- 20:44still does. Are you loving that?
- 20:47Yeah, great. I was very thoughtful in this in
- 20:51this writing I'm. Going to have to bring but also
- 20:53like. Basic, thoughtful, basically
- 20:57thoughtful. You're going to what I'm.
- 21:00Going to have to bring it for your intro.
- 21:01Oh, obviously I will. I will.
- 21:03Today she's raising 2 wildly wild boys, Cruz and Roscoe.
- 21:09She owns Bike Craft with her spousal equivalent, which is the
- 21:12same shop where her dad bought her her first mountain bike, and
- 21:17she works as a real estate agent.
- 21:19She sits on the city's Tourism and Parks advisory committee.
- 21:24She heads up the new NICA mountain bike team.
- 21:27The list goes on and on. Heather has created and sold
- 21:32several small businesses, flipped houses, rode horses,
- 21:36boiled crabs, and gone viral on TikTok and every other social
- 21:42media platform. Those are just her credentials,
- 21:45but what really drives Heather is connection to this place, to
- 21:50the people in it, and to the idea that the outdoors has a way
- 21:54of bringing people back to something real.
- 21:57And that's exactly why we started this podcast.
- 22:00I met Heather the summer before 6th grade in a first in a Red
- 22:07Cross babysitters first aid training course and we became
- 22:12instant friends. Kicked it pretty hard through
- 22:16all of middle school and some in the high school kind of went.
- 22:20Like different ways. Two years in the high school
- 22:23when I was. Yeah, two years and then that
- 22:25two. Then, like junior year, I really
- 22:27got in the party. Yeah, and.
- 22:29Was like, I want my other friends that yeah, that are bad
- 22:37kids. Yeah, I was just kind of a
- 22:39closeted bad kid. Yes, you were.
- 22:41And then, well, you. I threw the prom after party our
- 22:47senior year and you were there. I mean, we were made friends.
- 22:53I just was like, and I always still during that time, I would
- 22:57still consider you a close friend.
- 22:59It's just I was just off kind of exploring the world.
- 23:02Yeah, yeah, you keep keep old friends, you know, get new
- 23:05friends, but keep the old one silver and the others gold.
- 23:08That's a Girl Scout. Yeah.
- 23:11And so we did that we we found new friends, we kept each other
- 23:16as friends, we lived long and prospered.
- 23:19And then a couple years ago, I hit her up and said, yo, I think
- 23:25we need to do something creative.
- 23:27Yeah. And.
- 23:28I do think our, I think our reconnection.
- 23:31Was because of Sean. Well, it was inevitable.
- 23:34Well, obviously. Yeah, obviously, like we're kind
- 23:36of living parallel, semi parallel, just I don't, I have
- 23:40kids and Emily doesn't but but similar lives.
- 23:43So I think it was inevitable. Inevitable.
- 23:46Sean, you know, you were really good friends with Josh and Sean
- 23:50in high school, which Sean's my spousal equivalent.
- 23:54He's actually technically my boyfriend, but that sounds so.
- 23:58Silly, he's also the father of your second child.
- 24:00Yes, I have two baby daddies. Yeah.
- 24:03So yeah, GP baby. So and, and Josh is Sean's
- 24:10younger brother and yeah, I was close with them through end of
- 24:15high school in like a couple years after high school and then
- 24:20distanced from them when I got when I got married.
- 24:24Right, right, and. Did that life moved out of
- 24:27Grants Pass for a little while and then when I moved back to
- 24:31Grants Pass, I hosted a memorial weekend party and like open
- 24:35house party and you and Sean stopped by and we hung out on my
- 24:41there was there was many couple hours.
- 24:43Yes, there was many of times where I when your dad was going
- 24:49through his cancer and I was seeing updates from you online
- 24:52and stuff that I wanted to reach out, but I was just in my own
- 24:56world and I didn't maybe know how to connect in that point of
- 24:59life you were in. And I felt it to be.
- 25:03Maybe if I reached out then it would, it just wouldn't have
- 25:06been like an authentic connection just I mean, it would
- 25:10obviously I tried to be authentic in everything that I
- 25:12do, but. But it would have been like, Oh
- 25:14my God, I see that you're struggling.
- 25:16Hey, how are you versus? And when stuff is really hard.
- 25:21Like that? Yes.
- 25:22When things are really hard, people are going through really
- 25:24hard times And like when like I've lost friends and stuff,
- 25:28I've always been very reclused from like I've, I don't go to
- 25:34funerals. Like I've, I've only been to
- 25:36maybe one or two funerals because it's just like, I maybe
- 25:41that's still some like healing I need to do or whatever.
- 25:43But like I usually give that person like Sabesa, like I'm
- 25:48just like, I'm going to give you space.
- 25:49Like I reach out. But I'm, I'm better now.
- 25:53But when I was in my early 20s, I don't know if I quite like
- 25:57accepted that people die. You afraid of death?
- 26:02I was for a long time. Afraid of other people dying?
- 26:05Afraid of yourself dying? I just don't still to this day,
- 26:10well, better now that I'm like cracking back into my
- 26:13spirituality and stuff, but I just, it's, it's foreign and it
- 26:20makes me uncomfortable and I'm not necessarily like scared.
- 26:26It's just more like confusing and like the unknown.
- 26:32I, I don't like to and I don't really like to speak about
- 26:36things that I don't know. So it's kind of one of those
- 26:38like. Good of you.
- 26:41Yeah, that's been my whole like coming into my later adult years
- 26:47with everything, like just like when it comes to real world,
- 26:53like first world problems and like government and stuff like
- 26:56that. I just try to like always lean
- 26:57on like I'm not there. I don't know what's going on.
- 27:00Like, I know, you know, I just know what is seen online, but I
- 27:05also am very acutely aware of like being stuck in a like silo.
- 27:13So you like, you're only seeing that one thing that supports
- 27:16your stuff, like your thought. So I try to like, see, try to
- 27:23stay very subjective to things, but death is one of those like
- 27:28phenomenons that I don't know if I don't, it's just part of life,
- 27:31but like. It's the it's really the only
- 27:33thing we can like totally count on nobody.
- 27:36Exactly. Nobody gets out alive.
- 27:38Yeah. Every single time, yeah.
- 27:40And so now I don't know, just to get like hella deep, but right,
- 27:44that's. What we do here?
- 27:46That's what we do now that I'm cracking back into like my like
- 27:53living more like a Christ centered life.
- 27:55And like for 20 years I was like atheist, like pretty pretty
- 28:00close. Like I was very close.
- 28:02And then I started to kind of dabble in like more like
- 28:04spiritual woo woo Y stuff. And I still love that stuff.
- 28:07I think it's beautiful, even though kind of I'm now kind of
- 28:12coming back into like a God centered Christ centered life of
- 28:16sorts. And that's giving me a lot of
- 28:17peace. It's very it's brought a lot of
- 28:20peace to my life. Whereas being atheist and
- 28:25relying on like woo woo stuff wasn't providing me.
- 28:31So I feel just do you see birdies?
- 28:34This is a big ass bird. Oh God.
- 28:38I don't think it's a bald eagle. Might be what is it?
- 28:42A young bald eagle or a golden eagle that was a oh.
- 28:45It might be a golden eagle. Yeah, there's Golden Eagles
- 28:49around here anyway. I think I, I really celebrate
- 28:55you for that and I'm proud of you for finding something that
- 28:59brings you a sense of peace and calm and serenity and faith,
- 29:03whatever it may be. I mean, I'm, I have a different
- 29:07relationship with institutional religion and but have my own
- 29:13faith, the spiritual belief, higher power beliefs and
- 29:18practice. And I think that whatever you
- 29:22need to give yourself trust and faith and belief and calm and
- 29:33objectivity and. Just Yeah.
- 29:36Well, it's just funny that I just.
- 29:37It's really, it's really important.
- 29:39Yeah, yeah, I think it is totally important and I'm glad
- 29:41that I'm like leaning into it now.
- 29:43But I think it's funny that I just said I don't like to speak
- 29:45about stuff I don't know which like, yeah, you have to have
- 29:49like a lot of faith in whatever you are like, you know, your
- 29:53your spiritual stuff and just kind of rely on faith, which
- 29:58it's still hard for me to do. I'm still practicing it.
- 30:01I still like. It is a practice.
- 30:03So it's not it's a practice. It's not a permanent, but make
- 30:06it permanent by practicing. There's a little buddy swimming
- 30:09over there. I.
- 30:10Need a Bunny? Hello.
- 30:12I have a great view of the wildlife.
- 30:14Right now, including you, I'm up here.
- 30:17I love to just like paddle up with my paddle board right here
- 30:19and then just froze down. It's really nice little spot.
- 30:23Something that I really celebrate and appreciate about
- 30:28Judaism, which is my religion of upbringing, is that you never
- 30:34know. You never have a final answer.
- 30:36There's always a, you're always seeking more knowledge, more
- 30:41information, and it's a rejected idea that as you learn something
- 30:47and then that's, that's all there is to it and you can stop
- 30:50learning. It's more of a, do you think,
- 30:53you know, keep learning? And I think that that for me,
- 31:00that really supports having faith, having a faith that
- 31:04things work out, that things happen for a reason, that
- 31:08there's there's an answer coming somewhere on the horizon, that
- 31:12there's purpose and being here. And also that there's so much to
- 31:19know and there's so much to learn and every single very much
- 31:25so that every single person's experience is unique and right
- 31:30for them. And you can learn so much about
- 31:33yourself and others in the world just by learning about the
- 31:37people around you. And there's 8 billion of us.
- 31:40So there's endless things to learn and then get started on
- 31:44all the other species and environments.
- 31:46And like, you can never. There's endless information,
- 31:51yeah, and endless answers. I just love the like teaching of
- 31:55like, I think too, because I was raised Christian, you know, my
- 32:01parents aren't like practicing Christians or anything like
- 32:03that. But like, I was raised to like,
- 32:05you know, do that, like go to like church camp and stuff like
- 32:09that. And I didn't understand it then.
- 32:11And I was like, what's going on? Like I always like was very
- 32:13confused. And I think if I had continued
- 32:16that faith and really like poured into it, I might be a
- 32:19legalistic Christian now. Like, I don't know, like I might
- 32:21be like virtue signaling my Christianity all over the place.
- 32:24Just but like now that I've had like now that I, I had like a 20
- 32:30year ish break that it really gave me a lot of perspective.
- 32:34And now I can like know for certain that like I would never.
- 32:39That something is right for you. Yeah, and I would never and but
- 32:42like there's still so many like we actually talked about it in
- 32:45church, this church. It's like they like what not to
- 32:48do, not to be a legalistic Christian.
- 32:50Like, you know, they're Yeah, like don't like it's not the but
- 32:54you know, anyway, I don't want to like there's.
- 32:57Morals and values and boundaries and guidelines presented, yeah,
- 33:03make them fit for your life. But you don't have to live
- 33:06rigidly. Well, yeah, it was just.
- 33:08Like rigidly. Yeah, it was kind of like the
- 33:11saying like kind of like just like virtue signaling your like
- 33:16Christian, you know, values at people and like try to live like
- 33:21just more Christ centered. Like that's all that like is
- 33:24matters. Like embody, like how amazing.
- 33:27The modest and friendly and communal, Yeah.
- 33:32Yeah, that's really just it anyway, but I'm.
- 33:34Going to flip the screen around so we can see that.
- 33:36Word. Let's do that.
- 33:37Look at this. And then you're ohh, our leg,
- 33:40our leg matching. I wonder if people can see my
- 33:43hair legs. Yeah, that's good.
- 33:46We should probably do. That and then let's like.
- 33:48Get. Into our structure.
- 33:50So tell us, Heather, who you are, where you came from, and
- 33:53where where you met the outdoors.
- 33:55How you met the outdoors. So my dad.
- 33:58Where? Yeah, I.
- 33:59Was born and raised in Grants Pass OR my dad like you know,
- 34:04just lower middle class I would say.
- 34:10Is he also from Southern Oregon? Are your parents from Southern
- 34:12Oregon? No, my mom is from San Jose, so
- 34:17she's like typical Valley girl. Valley Girl.
- 34:20Valley girl and she still is. She's pretty chill though.
- 34:25She likes outdoors and stuff, but she's just, you know, she's
- 34:27just a fun loving. She didn't have like an
- 34:29upbringing in the outdoors per SE.
- 34:32So she just is very like fueled by like friends and shopping and
- 34:37stuff like that, which gave me I think a good balance of like 2
- 34:42worlds because we would visit down there a lot like in the
- 34:44city and stuff. So that was cool.
- 34:47And we still did. She hung out at the beach a lot.
- 34:49She was just like a beach, you know, valley girl Beachy, like,
- 34:52you know, in her little convertible and stuff like that.
- 34:55So yeah, Becky. Yeah.
- 34:57Very, very fair. Foxy with the good hair.
- 34:59Yeah, yeah and and then she moved up here when she was like
- 35:0325/24/25 after a big breakup and met my dad, started working at
- 35:10the mill, which I feel like a lot of people in Grants Pass
- 35:13like work at a mill because we have a quite a few of them our.
- 35:17History is very much in timber. And, and my dad, and my dad is,
- 35:22I think he was born in Portland actually.
- 35:24And then they moved down here like when he was like 4 or
- 35:27something. And my grandpa worked on the
- 35:30railroads and he they grew up on an 80 acre ranch in Hugo.
- 35:37And my grandma was a very Bible Thumper quilter, homestead trad
- 35:46wife and my grandpa worked and they had a big family and had
- 35:51like a cow and all and like sheep in a garden and my grandma
- 35:55can and all the stuff. And so living on the so
- 35:59literally they they're we saw the family property.
- 36:02My uncle owns it now, but they the property is like on the
- 36:09South side of Mount Sexton. Cool.
- 36:12So you can kind of see the house, like if you know where
- 36:15you're looking when you're driving down Mount Sexton, like
- 36:18coming into Grants Pass or Merlin, you can kind of like if
- 36:22you look closely, you can see the house and you can hear it
- 36:25from being at the house because it's like right there.
- 36:27You can hear the freeway. Oh.
- 36:28Yeah, yeah. I remember being like taking
- 36:30baths in the green, the retro green tub at night at my
- 36:33grandma's. And like, because we didn't have
- 36:35a bathtub growing up, we just had a shower at my house.
- 36:37So taking a bath was very special.
- 36:40And so I'd take a bath at my grandma's and I, the window
- 36:43would be open. I'd be like listening to the
- 36:47trucks, like brakes, like, And I remember just like thinking it
- 36:51was cool at the time, like very interesting.
- 36:53And then like smelling the Dial soap and being in the green tub.
- 36:58That's my like memories there. There's a bunch of memories.
- 37:00But anywho, so my my dad grew up there and he like I think out of
- 37:06pretty much all of his brothers were he's the middle son.
- 37:10My grandma had like boom boom boom.
- 37:11My dad will tell the story when he's on the pod, I'm sure.
- 37:13Like his upbringing, excellent. But yeah, excellent.
- 37:16Yeah, very excited. Very.
- 37:18Excited, but so he grew up just like being in the outdoors and
- 37:22like hunting around with this like, you know, like, oh, what's
- 37:25the like red, Red Wing, you know, BB gun.
- 37:30Oh, the. Whatever that is.
- 37:32From the movie. From the movie, yeah.
- 37:34But then it like escalated anyway.
- 37:36So he grew up like hunting and fishing and being like outdoors
- 37:39all the time. Like he just lived outside to
- 37:42get away from his brothers. He will probably say that
- 37:44because he, you know, he's the middle kid and he's just a
- 37:48really and. That's a very common story that
- 37:50we find people. People find themselves outside
- 37:53to get away from everybody else. Yeah, but you know, so he
- 37:58exactly. And he no, no, he just has a lot
- 38:02of interests. He's a hyper fixator and his
- 38:05current is pickleball. But.
- 38:08Anyway, he's of that era. He's of that era, he's of that
- 38:10age. But anyway, he he just hyper
- 38:12fixates, which I learned a lot of.
- 38:14Like he's a big time like crafter, like huge crafter
- 38:18taught himself how to play the bagpipe, like he's just cool.
- 38:23So learning and like seeing that I didn't, I wasn't like growing
- 38:29up. I wasn't like, oh dad, that's so
- 38:31awesome. I wasn't like, I mean, I thought
- 38:32it was cool, but I didn't know how it would impact impact me as
- 38:35an adult. And it has like if I look back,
- 38:37that has impacted me, like I'm very much hyper fixator in the
- 38:40moment. I'm a little different, but
- 38:42like, it really bred the like monkey see, monkey do like so I
- 38:49like catching him doing his things.
- 38:54And that's like, yeah. So I was raised by like watching
- 38:57my dad be a crafter a, you know, like, and outdoors a lot, always
- 39:04hunting, always doing stuff. So like growing up, it was like
- 39:08we camped multiple times a year, just like just regular camping.
- 39:12We had a group of friends that we'd camp with, like the crew
- 39:16and I grew up with the with the kids.
- 39:18And so that was cool to have that community that we all like
- 39:23did stuff outdoors and then just like, I just remember going on
- 39:27like long drives with my dad as he like scouted areas for
- 39:30hunting. Cool.
- 39:31So I would just like ride along in our black Jeep Cherokee and I
- 39:39sometimes on dirt roads would like fall asleep in the back.
- 39:42I actually remember this one time that we were just like
- 39:44scouting and exploring like literally my dad would just like
- 39:47bust a map out or then eventually he had his GPS and so
- 39:52he would like catalog and look at stuff on GPS before like the
- 39:55top O map on your app phone and. I remember this one time we were
- 40:01just like trail or climbing these back roads.
- 40:04My dad always had like a saw or chainsaw so he could cut trees
- 40:08out of the road to like old logging roads and just up in the
- 40:11mountains. And I was sleeping in the back
- 40:13kind of in and out. And my dad was like, OK, I'm
- 40:15going to park here and go like walk 'cause there's a tree in
- 40:17the way. And then I was sleeping.
- 40:20He comes back and he's like, you have to come see this like the
- 40:24coolest thing ever. And I would love for him to take
- 40:26us up there. Maybe that could be a spot where
- 40:29he does his episode or an episode with him because.
- 40:33I may have him on for multiple. He's got so many interests.
- 40:37He's, you know, he's very, he's very autistic.
- 40:40And anyway, we. Could do a whole series of
- 40:42Wyman. In.
- 40:44This place. Yes, Wyman in this place.
- 40:46So anyways, he comes back, he's like, you have to come check
- 40:48this out. We walk out to this like
- 40:50outcrobe outcropping, just like flagstone rock, just like on the
- 40:57side of the mountain, like Cliff rock face, perfectly flag stoned
- 41:02rock, just all like like so much of it.
- 41:07And you could I I lost my camera.
- 41:10I took a took a picture and then I lost it.
- 41:13That camera to like get developed.
- 41:14But I know there was like a picture of it.
- 41:16My dad probably has one because he had a camera with him too.
- 41:20He one of his photography is one of his interests.
- 41:23One of his many hobbies, One of his.
- 41:24Many interests. So he just had a nice camera and
- 41:27stuff. But Mount McLaughlin is like in
- 41:29the like, as you look out over this outcropping of flagstone
- 41:33basalt, I think it is like flagstone.
- 41:35There is like the perfect silhouette of Mount McLaughlin.
- 41:38It was the coolest thing and we actually grabbed a couple
- 41:40flagstones and that time when we were there, but then my dad did
- 41:44the research and got a permit to go collect those.
- 41:47So all those flagstones where my parents have, my dad built a koi
- 41:52pond, they're all from the outcropping, so real flagstone
- 41:56that I think he paid just like a simple permit for.
- 42:00And he went and collected a bunch of them.
- 42:02Wow. Yeah.
- 42:03He was like, oh, cool. I remember his joy.
- 42:05He was like, it was like, he won the lottery.
- 42:08Yeah. So we did a lot of stuff like
- 42:09that, a lot of driving and scouting and exploring, and then
- 42:14we would go backpacking, my first backpacking and we didn't
- 42:19go backpacking a lot. I've only been backpacking maybe
- 42:21a handful of times truly throughout the life throughout
- 42:24my life, but they were pretty substantial.
- 42:27Multiple days, Yeah, Beautiful locations.
- 42:31Yeah, yeah. And very memorable with my dad.
- 42:33Or your mom there too. Or.
- 42:34My mom's not a backpacker. She'll camp all day and, like,
- 42:38be the cook camp cookie. But like, she won't, you know?
- 42:41Yeah, so but. Just you and your dad.
- 42:45Just me. And my dad out there, yeah.
- 42:47And it would always be kind of like spring.
- 42:49So it'd be like, still cold, still cold, still like remnants
- 42:55of, like, snow and stuff where we're going.
- 42:57But some of the time, my dad would be like, hey, we're
- 43:00actually not going to take the trail.
- 43:03We're going to just like follow the GPS, like like through the
- 43:08bushes. And thank God I never got poison
- 43:11oak. I literally have never gotten
- 43:13poison oak. But we would just like
- 43:15bushwhack, bushwhack. Like I remember this one time we
- 43:20went up with my dad and his friend Dale.
- 43:24I think his name was Dale. Anyway, they were going on a
- 43:26hike and I was like, I want to go with you.
- 43:27But then we get to the trailhead and I'm like, I think I'm going
- 43:29to stay in the car. Glad I didn't.
- 43:31They talked me into going because sometimes I would like
- 43:34my dad would go off, you know, for a short little tramps and
- 43:38like I wouldn't go. Sometimes I would just like
- 43:40chill in the car or whatever. I don't know what I did.
- 43:43Stare out the window. No, I was just staring out the
- 43:45window like I was like a board kit.
- 43:47Like not bored, but bored. Like I could just look and like
- 43:52it's probably imagine. Part of what made you so
- 43:54creative and inventive? Yeah, and just like I'm just
- 43:57like, I could stare at the Moss on the tree for hours.
- 44:00Yeah. So that's probably what I did
- 44:03anyway. But this one time we did.
- 44:06My dad wanted to go hunt down a hanging pond.
- 44:10Oh. So there's just this hanging
- 44:13pond, I guess, this little pond on top of the mountain.
- 44:17And he, we were going to go look for it.
- 44:19Oh my God. It was like we were bushwhacking
- 44:22at one point. I was like, and I've never been
- 44:24bitten by a tick either. I don't know how, but like we
- 44:27were like wading through these like thickets, like just like
- 44:31chiming. Through bushes.
- 44:32Yeah, and we just like traipsed around.
- 44:34We did a big circle. Anyway.
- 44:36We did find the hanging pond. It wasn't worth it, of course.
- 44:42Was it worth it? Let me work it.
- 44:44Yeah, it was cool. It was just a tramp sea hike
- 44:48that we went on like we would. What was the pond?
- 44:49Cool. I remember being like, this is
- 44:53it? I remember it was like, yeah,
- 44:55it's so cool. Like, why is there a pond on the
- 44:57top of a mountain? Like, it was really cool.
- 45:00I'm like, OK dad anyway. So stuff like that.
- 45:05And just like sometimes I would have to be forced to go do
- 45:09certain things like if there wasn't kids because I'm an only
- 45:12child too. So that was also like I was
- 45:15fueled by like, is there any kids going to be there?
- 45:17Like, I really wanted to like, play, you know, I was a big like
- 45:22player. Big player, Big player.
- 45:26So that's for an episode on Patreon someday.
- 45:30You mean only fans? I'm just kidding.
- 45:36So yeah, you, you, you were wanted to be a social kid and
- 45:39didn't. Have that I was very social, but
- 45:42like so that fueled me. But there was times when my dad
- 45:44was like, you're getting into the car, whether like you're
- 45:48going to go with nothing, you better go pack your bag like I'm
- 45:51going to put you in the vehicle. And so you have no.
- 45:54Other choice. He would do stuff like that.
- 45:56So that one time I remember I, it was like my 15th birthday and
- 46:00I, it was my 15th birthday and I wanted to stay in town and be
- 46:04with my friends and, like, I was 15, you know?
- 46:06Yeah, yeah. And then he made me go to
- 46:11Eastern Oregon and more central, East Central Eastern Oregon to
- 46:16Hart Mountain. But that ended up being a really
- 46:18cool trip. How they got me there, How and
- 46:20my mom was there too, and how they coaxed me into the car
- 46:25finally was you can sit in the front the whole time.
- 46:29Privilege. And you can choose the music.
- 46:31Oh. Bonus.
- 46:34Yeah. So that's a.
- 46:36Great way to get your kids in the car.
- 46:37Yep. At least it was back then.
- 46:39I don't know if it still would. Be it was good and so I chose
- 46:42the music and we listened to greatest hits of the
- 46:45Cranberries. Nice.
- 46:47The whole trip. Zombie zombie.
- 46:51Yeah, I did. And my mom was in the back.
- 46:55And she says after that trip, the window was open so much that
- 46:59her long curly hair got like, matted.
- 47:01So she had to cut it after that trip because of that trip.
- 47:05Wow, but. Anyway, that was a really fun
- 47:07trip do. You believe her?
- 47:09Yeah, OK. She got it really matted and it
- 47:11was just time for her to cut her hair, I guess.
- 47:14So now she has short, shorter hair.
- 47:16But yeah, I was really want. To throw it out, try again.
- 47:19I don't know. Yeah, well.
- 47:20She's. Funny like that.
- 47:22Yeah, Becky with good hair. Becky with a good hair anyway,
- 47:25and so just things like that. But that was a really fun trip
- 47:28in and of itself and I got to explore like a new region and
- 47:31when I was a kid and exploring and stuff like that with my dad
- 47:34and stuff, I didn't really like think anything different, you
- 47:38know, like I didn't really did something turn off.
- 47:42I heard a click. I didn't think that that was
- 47:46like, I just that was normal. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:48You weren't looking at what other people were doing with
- 47:51their lives and thinking, oh, you don't go and do this.
- 47:54I did. There was some like I remembered
- 47:56asking my dad a couple times, like why don't we actually like
- 47:59travel, travel, like go on a plane and travel.
- 48:01And he's just like there's so many amazing places here to like
- 48:04go explore, like why do we need to go spend that kind of money?
- 48:07And my dad's also like a real tight with his monies, but he
- 48:12did really well for himself. We were lower middle class
- 48:15because he just like put all of his money in the savings.
- 48:18Mm hmm. He's just one of those.
- 48:20So he's sitting on a fat wad now, which I'm an only child, so
- 48:24that will be beneficial eventually.
- 48:27Yeah, yeah. But to me, no rush.
- 48:29No rush yes, but like still it's just like I don't know.
- 48:32And he? And he was able to provide a
- 48:35filling, adventurous OH. My gosh.
- 48:37Childhood for you without spending.
- 48:40And yeah, large. Sums of.
- 48:41Money, yes. And those are just his
- 48:42interests. I mean he did travel as I think
- 48:45he travelled a little bit as a, he's lived like everywhere
- 48:48except and he's lived in like American Samoa.
- 48:51I don't think he's ever been to like Europe and stuff, but he's
- 48:53planning on it now. Cool.
- 48:55So he's planning a trip now, but to go over to Ireland and
- 48:59Scotland and stuff because that's like his heritage.
- 49:02But yeah, so that was just his interest and what he liked to do
- 49:06and what fulfilled him. And so I just like tagged along
- 49:10and. You enjoyed it enough that
- 49:12you've kept doing it. Yeah, pretty much.
- 49:15I mean, there was AI feel like there was a stent in my like,
- 49:21you know, late teens and early 20s where I didn't adventure a
- 49:25ton, you know, but I've always every year I feel like since
- 49:35probably since like Mariel, like that's so Mariel.
- 49:40I, I went to Mariel when I was like 22, I think Mariel Lodge.
- 49:46So I got a job down there. I think once that started really
- 49:49like kicked off my like outdoor adventure adventurous like adult
- 49:56vibe again cuz. And like doing it for yourself,
- 49:59being self driven to get outside.
- 50:02Yeah, yeah. And even then and even now, it's
- 50:04like, I wish, like I have the hopes and aspirations to like,
- 50:08do more. Like, I haven't been backpacking
- 50:10in forever, you know, It's like, so I've been wanting.
- 50:14Other interests have come come up, yeah.
- 50:17I mean totally like just mountain biking since we bought
- 50:20the bike shop. I'm all over the place now, but
- 50:22like so my team years, we still like we did the middle fork of
- 50:25the salmon. That was like a really pivotal.
- 50:27I did that when I was 16 MM Hmm, cool.
- 50:29And then we did the lower rogue, I think the summer after.
- 50:32So that was like I really got into rafting and being on the
- 50:35river more with my dad and stuff.
- 50:36So I still like maintain that. But then, yeah, as my like,
- 50:41getting right out of high school, it was like I was just
- 50:43really figuring out what I was doing with my life.
- 50:45And I went to college and I didn't graduate.
- 50:48I got like my master recycler's certificate and a couple little
- 50:52like little programmy things, master gardener and stuff like
- 50:57that. But like, I didn't, I didn't
- 51:01finish because I didn't like school.
- 51:04I'm just not really in the school, like people telling me
- 51:06what to do. My close friends know this about
- 51:10me. Like I don't like to be told
- 51:11what to do at all. I have like, oppositional
- 51:13defiance disorder. So like when somebody tells me
- 51:17like I'd like rebel. Yeah.
- 51:20Which is kind of what happened. And that's how my son is now
- 51:23too, so. Funny how funny how the monkey
- 51:26see monkey do is generational. I like that.
- 51:29Yeah, it's there is a genetic situation there, but.
- 51:34And that's why I don't ever tell you what to do.
- 51:36I I ask you to do. Things it's just people like my
- 51:40like Sean has like I feel like learned how to approach me with
- 51:44it in a way that like I'm like, yeah, that's a great idea yeah,
- 51:48yeah, it's just like. Kind of your own idea, people.
- 51:51Learn this about me. Yeah.
- 51:52And it's something that I'd like recognize.
- 51:54So like, I'm not as bad as I was and like, you know, stuff like
- 51:58that. But it's still definitely
- 51:59lingers. And then when I was in my early
- 52:0520s, so like 22, I went, I got a job at Mario Lodge down the
- 52:13lower Rogue River. How'd you get the job?
- 52:15I just sit in my resume. You you knew you wanted to work
- 52:18there. Yeah, I just was like, I applied
- 52:21to Paradise. I applied to a few wineries at
- 52:24the time and I just was like looking for something different
- 52:29and I heard about Mario Lodge and didn't know anybody, didn't
- 52:33know the owners or anything. Then they gave me a job and
- 52:37instantly it was like Pat and Lori who owned the lodge, like
- 52:42knew was really, they were really good friends with a
- 52:46classmate of my dad. So there was like already a
- 52:48connection. The guy that was working there,
- 52:51Amber at the time, like the first person I met, Amber, she's
- 52:55still a really good friend of mine to this day.
- 52:57We actually like, we've traveled together, like out of country
- 53:01and stuff like that. But she's awesome.
- 53:03Anyway, her dad went to high school with my dad.
- 53:06So there was like an instant connection there.
- 53:09And yeah, that place really like you're living off grid in an off
- 53:16grid out of off grid lodge, you know, 12 days on four days off.
- 53:22But like that would fluctuate. Sometimes you would do a couple
- 53:26extra days or a couple less days or you would do a couple more
- 53:29days at home or shorter days at home.
- 53:32It just depend. But that's where I really like
- 53:36got fell in love with the river from a different perspective.
- 53:40I thought a couple times maybe I would get into like guiding,
- 53:44like after a couple seasons I was like, maybe I'll get into
- 53:46guiding, but I didn't like the the thought of I'm truly kind of
- 53:53a passenger Princess like I do. I have road and like practice,
- 53:58but I need to practice more. Howdy friends.
- 54:02Quickly, a little pause on the adventure.
- 54:04First of all, we just want to say thank you.
- 54:06Truly. The fact that you're out there
- 54:08listening to this weird little outdoor podcast we started means
- 54:11more to us than you probably realize.
- 54:13We're just two little feral childhood besties that had an
- 54:16idea, grab some microphones and decided to record conversations
- 54:20in the wild. And somehow you showed up for
- 54:23it. Thank you.
- 54:24So if this podcast has ever made you laugh, taught you something,
- 54:28or kept you company on a drive, a hike, or a day at the river,
- 54:31we have one small favor to ask you.
- 54:33Give the show a follow, tap the stars and leave a review if you
- 54:37can. And also, here's a little fun
- 54:39exercise. Think of the first person who
- 54:41popped in your head while listening to this episode
- 54:44because let's be honest, everyone on podcasts, remind
- 54:47somebody of somebody or somebody you know that'll enjoy this
- 54:50podcast. Send this episode to them.
- 54:52That's honestly the best way this little wildly podcast
- 54:56grows. All right, thanks for being here
- 54:58with us. Now let's go wildly together.
- 55:03Cool. We're back.
- 55:04Yeah, we're back. We're back.
- 55:06Back after a battery. Change.
- 55:07So anyways, where was I with marry all?
- 55:10It was where you went. Oh yeah, so I thought I would
- 55:15maybe get into guy guiding stuff but and growing up.
- 55:19You're passenger, Princess. I am a passenger or I do like I
- 55:21have a paddle cat. So like my dad bought me a
- 55:24paddle cat when I was like 12 or something and that's what I rode
- 55:27or not even rode and paddled. But like you can't row a panel.
- 55:31Can't new camp so a little paddle cat and that's what I
- 55:34did. You know, just like the rec
- 55:36sections with my dad as they did it.
- 55:39I never went down the Laura Rogue in that.
- 55:40But yeah, so then I thought about it and I'm like dude, like
- 55:45and then like setting up camp and stuff.
- 55:47I was like that's a bit much. That's a lot like and like you
- 55:49got to be on and like, so I was like, it's like I loved.
- 55:54It's like 17 hour days of on, yeah.
- 55:57So. Like 5-5 days of 17 hour days.
- 56:02There's bird fucking around in the bushes over here.
- 56:04OK. I was like, is that a dog coming
- 56:07anyway? So I like I was just like, no,
- 56:10just go back to Mariel a few times.
- 56:11And so it's essentially what I did is I went did Mariel Lodge
- 56:16like 3 1/2 years, so almost four years.
- 56:21And that was like seasonal hospitality food.
- 56:26Everything. Cleaning.
- 56:27There's a little mink in the water.
- 56:30Hi, how cute. Oh my God.
- 56:34How precious, right? That's mink are also, one of the
- 56:38things that brought a lot of people to settle this area was
- 56:42for the fur trade for mink and Beaver, and their populations
- 56:47were rather decimated for quite some time.
- 56:49But they've had a comeback. They're having a comeback.
- 56:52Rodents. Yeah.
- 56:54Any who, maybe we should get back into pelting.
- 56:56Kill them. Kill me.
- 56:59Probably not, but, well, that's working with Canada geese.
- 57:04If they yeah, if they start to Canada geese, if they start to
- 57:07get overwhelmed, my dad's really good about talking about that.
- 57:10That's cool, yeah. It's really.
- 57:12Yeah, there needs to be balance in the.
- 57:14He's really about balance in the ecosystem.
- 57:16Yeah. Anyway, yeah.
- 57:18So Mariel kind of just like bred this like kind of outdoorsy,
- 57:22semi dirt baggy vibe life, meeting a lot of the river guys
- 57:27and having river guides and like just having the experience.
- 57:32But I got to slept, sleep in my bed that I like made my space
- 57:35and like every day and that was really fun and really great.
- 57:40And it was really daunting kind of work.
- 57:41Just like same thing different day.
- 57:44So that was rough on my ADH. 5:00 AM Make breakfast, serve
- 57:49breakfast, clean up from breakfast, turn over the rooms.
- 57:53Exactly. Yeah.
- 57:54And then you have space in your day.
- 57:56So that's beauty. Like you work in the mornings
- 57:59and then you have space in your day to like go do whatever, like
- 58:023-4 hours to like go lay by the river, go for a hike, go for a
- 58:07run. And then we'd come back, fold
- 58:08laundry and then we'd be done for another like hour to two
- 58:12hours before the dinner shift would consummate and people
- 58:17would come in consummate. You like that?
- 58:19Great choice of. There, yeah.
- 58:22So and then we would do night and then that was like a couple
- 58:25hours, a few hours and then, you know, clean up and then just
- 58:29like do it all over again, do it all over again.
- 58:31And but it was really great. Those like times when we got to
- 58:37go explore, hang out, it was just like in the wilderness, you
- 58:40know, because there was, we did have TV out there.
- 58:43So like we'd have a. Couple.
- 58:45From satellite dish so we didn't have like and it was just like a
- 58:48satellite phone now they have Internet and I think Internet
- 58:51and stuff down there yeah brought that in when the new
- 58:53owners came in but yeah I mean so I would watch some TV as like
- 58:57you know you're tired and stuff like that but I'd be out and
- 59:00about most days and. Anything crazy ever happened out
- 59:04there? Yeah, well, not to me, but like
- 59:09Amber was, she was the only one at the lodge because we had like
- 59:13no guest day or whatever and everybody was out.
- 59:16She was running. She was a big, like we'd run the
- 59:18road right for like a mile and then turn around and come back.
- 59:22And so, like, up the road, she was chased by a bear.
- 59:25And that was pretty. That's crazy.
- 59:27And she was like, dude, it was like the scariest thing in my
- 59:29life that kind of like scared me away from like running the road.
- 59:33Like, I would, I'd be pretty timid and stuff.
- 59:35But like, I got over it. Like you just kind of get over
- 59:37it. Yeah.
- 59:38And you? Have bear spray or yeah, you
- 59:39take something. She didn't though.
- 59:40Like, we would not run with bear spray.
- 59:42I mean, I've seen Bobcats and mountain lions down there and
- 59:48baby mountain lions. Cute, baby.
- 59:52Yeah, baby bears, lots of bears. I walked up on a bear one time.
- 59:58I was, it was during dinner service and I was walking up to
- 1:00:02my car because we had this little trail that would where
- 1:00:05the cars were. And then the the lodge and stuff
- 1:00:07was down here in our our little house, our guide, how the guide
- 1:00:10shack. And then we lived under the
- 1:00:12guide shack. But I was walking up to grab
- 1:00:14something from my car and there was just like, I just walked
- 1:00:17right by this bear. That was like. 5 feet from my
- 1:00:20face. I like saw the like, hey, yeah.
- 1:00:24I just like, I came up on him. He was like right here.
- 1:00:28I came up on him and I could just like, see the drool out of
- 1:00:31his mouth. He was up in the apple tree and
- 1:00:34I just like turned around and went back and I was like, hey, I
- 1:00:39told like Pat and Lori, I was like the bears up there because
- 1:00:42the nuisance beard we have to scare away.
- 1:00:45I don't. You don't want bears to get too
- 1:00:47habituated to humans. So there was probably a couple.
- 1:00:51Habituated at all, really, right there.
- 1:00:53Was probably a couple bears that like he, you know, probably just
- 1:00:58killed but like mostly it was like scaring them away.
- 1:01:03But then if they kept coming back, he would have to Yeah.
- 1:01:06You know, just unfortunately it's just like how it, it's.
- 1:01:09Bad for everybody, yeah. Because there was like I've
- 1:01:12heard stories of like the bear getting in the cars up there and
- 1:01:15like all sorts of shit. Like one time I was it was in
- 1:01:20the middle of the night and I was hanging out with, I was
- 1:01:23having some fun around the lodge with someone and.
- 1:01:30Late night debauchery. Yeah, late night debauchery and
- 1:01:34a freaking bear just, like, comes careening off of the,
- 1:01:39like, back deck stairs, like, right.
- 1:01:42Kind of like in front of us. And I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:01:44So he was like, really close to like getting into the lodge,
- 1:01:47which would have been terrible. Yeah.
- 1:01:49So. And then Pat, Pat was like
- 1:01:52chasing him. And I was like, oh, there's Pat,
- 1:01:54you know, like tied. Anyway, I don't know if we knew
- 1:02:00where those were. Anyway, just some fun times,
- 1:02:04like truly just fun explorational times.
- 1:02:07And yeah. And so I did some traveling in
- 1:02:09between because that's seasonal. So like April to end of April,
- 1:02:14we'd kind of start to head down there to clean up the lodge from
- 1:02:17the winter. And then it would be done in
- 1:02:19like early October. And so then I'd have all winter
- 1:02:24and I would travel. I would go to like Central
- 1:02:27America and I took a couple. I not took a couple.
- 1:02:31I took one like lifeguarding job down there at like the Envision
- 1:02:35festival. That was really fun and just
- 1:02:37like camped and traveled and backpacked for like a month plus
- 1:02:41down there. Friends, no friends, sorts of
- 1:02:45stuff, all sorts of stuff. And so that was fun.
- 1:02:47And then I'd go back to Mariel and then I got the pregnant.
- 1:02:52That's with Caruso Lahi. Yes, and he was a unexpected
- 1:03:02thing, but he has changed my life for the better and he is
- 1:03:05amazing and what he changed me is amazing.
- 1:03:09And like the focus then from having crews put me on this path
- 1:03:14of like entrepreneurship and like making something for myself
- 1:03:17and really like being an adult and like striving for some
- 1:03:21really cool creative projects and endeavors and businesses and
- 1:03:25stuff. So that formed like into like my
- 1:03:30catering company that I created Roam the bar and my charcuterie,
- 1:03:36I was one of, I was probably the first charcuterie and mobile bar
- 1:03:41of its kind in Southern Oregon. And I did that for like 3-4
- 1:03:46years. And then it was just a lot to do
- 1:03:49alone and raising a child and yeah, raising a child.
- 1:03:54And there was a little bit of time in between, a couple of
- 1:03:56years where I was working another job that was amazing.
- 1:03:58And I flipped a house in between all of that.
- 1:04:00And that kind of got me on my like real estate career too.
- 1:04:03So it all kind of blended and 1:00 And then I met my boyfriend
- 1:04:07Sean. That's why is it so funny to.
- 1:04:12Call him your boyfriend. But I call him my husband
- 1:04:14because like, it's like we have a kid and a business together.
- 1:04:17Yeah, and you've been together for how long?
- 1:04:19Seven years. That's common law.
- 1:04:21Yeah, yeah. So, so, so then, yeah.
- 1:04:24So he was like, wow. Seven years.
- 1:04:28I know I blinked and my son just turned 10 last Friday, which is
- 1:04:33crazy. Cruz just turned 10 anyway, and
- 1:04:36Cruz is named after the lower rogue Ilahi.
- 1:04:38So his middle name is Ilahi. It was actually I was going to
- 1:04:41be his first name. And then I was like, baby, we
- 1:04:44should save him some torment and you know, and like name him Cruz
- 1:04:49first because it was going to be Ilahi, Cruz Cain.
- 1:04:51And then it's then we chose Cruz, Ilahi Cain, and that's
- 1:04:54been that. But Ilahi is a native word,
- 1:04:58which he's also on his I on my side too.
- 1:05:01I'm Native American a little bit, but his dad is like a lot a
- 1:05:04Native American, you know, like he's registered native and so is
- 1:05:09Cruz. And so we wanted to kind of
- 1:05:11blend like my background of the lower rogue and the native
- 1:05:16language history type and his back, Sam's background and Sam
- 1:05:22is Cruz's dad. We're we're homies.
- 1:05:25And so Ilahi, which means like settlement or Earth.
- 1:05:31So there's like a spot down the lower rogue named Ilahi.
- 1:05:35So anyway, so that's. That I love that combination of
- 1:05:39of your personal histories and your genealogical histories.
- 1:05:42Yeah, kind of a blended that. Very intentional it was.
- 1:05:45Very intentional naming, very intentional.
- 1:05:49And where was I So that. Oh yeah.
- 1:05:53And then so Sean and I got together.
- 1:05:55He loved bikes. I kind of already loved bikes
- 1:05:59too, but not to the extent that Sean loved his bikes, right.
- 1:06:05And I had dated a guy that was really into mountain biking and
- 1:06:09bike centered stuff in Bend. And so I kind of got a glimpse
- 1:06:13of mountain biking then. And then when I got with Sean, I
- 1:06:16really like that's kind of part of our love story, which would
- 1:06:19be cool to tell one day. It's centered around mountain
- 1:06:23biking, truly. And so I bought a mountain bike
- 1:06:26and like that whole sector is like history, you know, Then
- 1:06:30buying the bike shop. We bought the bike shop and our
- 1:06:32lives have been really centered around bike adventuring.
- 1:06:35And you bought the bike shop right before COVID.
- 1:06:39During COVID? During COVID 2021, OK 2020.
- 1:06:43One made it through and. We made it through, survived.
- 1:06:46It was really great for a few years and then it kind of like
- 1:06:48dipped and now we're like plateaued at like a healthy.
- 1:06:50It's more like the economy for the bike stuff is a little bit
- 1:06:53more healthy and and plateaued. Nice.
- 1:06:56Which is great. A little more sustainable.
- 1:06:57Sustainable, yeah. So there for a while it was like
- 1:07:01touch and go and Sean is still working the two jobs to like
- 1:07:04make it work for us because we don't we still aren't taking a
- 1:07:07profit or paying ourselves with the bike shop.
- 1:07:09That's very important to know. Yeah, the bike shop does not pay
- 1:07:12us. I'm more my bike gear because it
- 1:07:14is our brand. But and I did my dad did buy my
- 1:07:18first mountain bike there when I was little.
- 1:07:20So it's very full circle moment having the bike shop and it's
- 1:07:25brought us a lot of community and a lot of like outdoor
- 1:07:27centered community because everybody likes mountain biking,
- 1:07:30camping, like the whole shebang. We've really created this cool
- 1:07:35community from the mountain bike world and just bike world in
- 1:07:38general. Like right, like 2 wheels is
- 1:07:40better. I did sell when I was 21.
- 1:07:45I was with one of my boyfriends and he was also really into
- 1:07:50bikes and I sold my car and I biked for two years during my
- 1:07:56college and stuff and just just had a bike and just because our
- 1:08:00town is like 5 miles across, like you can really.
- 1:08:03Depending on where you are living, you can get just about
- 1:08:07anywhere. So I just like biked everywhere
- 1:08:09and that was really fun. I was when I was a vegan and I
- 1:08:13was like super duper virtue signaling liberal.
- 1:08:19I'm not so much. I'm more, I'm more mild.
- 1:08:21Now what? There's a ton of little baby
- 1:08:25fish in the water right there. What is it like biking through
- 1:08:30Grants Pass? Like it's not a town that from
- 1:08:33my perspective as a non biker it's not very accommodating for
- 1:08:38bicycle transport. Yeah, it's like one of the like
- 1:08:41non just took off what that big? The big bird?
- 1:08:47It might be a baby bald eagle. Oh.
- 1:08:49It is. It's a bald eagle, of course.
- 1:08:53The bald eagle would arrive for your episode Polytus
- 1:08:55Lucocephalus. Oh, there you.
- 1:08:57Go. I've said it so many times that,
- 1:08:58you know, halitus lucocephalus. Yeah, the bald eagle is my
- 1:09:02spirit animal and I love that. Jolene, Bobby.
- 1:09:06Jolene, Bobby. Jolene Bald Eagle.
- 1:09:08Yeah, that's my Merial name. Well, I've had I've had a lot of
- 1:09:10Merial names, but that's like the fun one that actually me and
- 1:09:15Claire would come up with cuz Claire Bear worked down there or
- 1:09:18whatever and shout out Claire. I think she's an avid listener.
- 1:09:21Very much so, very much. So we need to get her on.
- 1:09:24Yep. On the.
- 1:09:27List. She's on the list.
- 1:09:28There's a lot of people on our list.
- 1:09:29Yeah, we got lots of paper. Which is like, wow, like just a
- 1:09:33quick moment for that. I know what a blessing and honor
- 1:09:37it is to have so many people as potential guests, people
- 1:09:43reaching out to us, people that we've thought of of from our own
- 1:09:47thought of on our own. Gee whiz.
- 1:09:50Gee whiz, Gee willikers. Gee, Whitaker.
- 1:09:54Just how like how well received this podcast product has been by
- 1:09:58both listeners, guests, Yeah, anybody who comes across it.
- 1:10:04I agree. I agree.
- 1:10:05And something to admit with that is like I like, I feel like
- 1:10:10Emily real quick. I feel like Emily has always
- 1:10:12been like, dude, this podcast is going to be major, huge, major
- 1:10:15big. And I've always been like, yeah,
- 1:10:18maybe I've always just been kind of like, like I just have to see
- 1:10:23where it goes, you know? Like not that I have big
- 1:10:26aspirations for it. That would be great.
- 1:10:27But I'm also someone that gets my hopes up.
- 1:10:29So I have to really pump breaks when I get really like, because
- 1:10:36making sure it's sustainable, which has been a struggle like
- 1:10:39and stuff like that. So I have to my mindset is
- 1:10:43growing more big vision as it grows.
- 1:10:50I'm like, yes, OK, it's happening.
- 1:10:51Cool. I sat back.
- 1:10:52I just kind of wanted to see like make sure that it was
- 1:10:55something that we weren't just going to fall off of.
- 1:10:57I don't know how you operate. I don't know how to operate and
- 1:10:59like you know so. And at the same time, when we
- 1:11:03first started getting into this, you had lots of ideas and you
- 1:11:07still have lots of ideas that are beyond our capacity and
- 1:11:11reach right now. And I've been the one to say,
- 1:11:14let's just stay focused on, yeah, I think we've been a
- 1:11:16really consistent product and we can get to those bigger ideas.
- 1:11:21Yes, absolutely. And I think that's where you and
- 1:11:25I have like really good yin and Yang energy of like I, you know,
- 1:11:29like I'm very much a idea person and I can execute too.
- 1:11:34I can, I can execute for a long amount of time and then I fall
- 1:11:38off hard. That's how I operate.
- 1:11:41And then I'm just like, dude, I need a break.
- 1:11:42Oh my God. I like get so burnt out.
- 1:11:44And that's something I'm trying to manage in my adult years and
- 1:11:47figuring out. Spend all the gas right out of
- 1:11:49the gate. Yeah, so, but I'm learning how
- 1:11:52to just like fix my engine so it can just like take a lot of gas
- 1:11:55all the time. And I think I'm getting there.
- 1:11:57And it's really cool to see like my, like, consistency progress.
- 1:12:03And the more I'm consistent, the more I feel like I can be
- 1:12:06consistent with anything, which is really a cool growth
- 1:12:10situation. Absolutely.
- 1:12:11Is your bald eagles back? I I can definitely attest to
- 1:12:15that. It has been really cool to
- 1:12:18observe. Here it is.
- 1:12:19Hey baby. Hell yeah, Baldy.
- 1:12:25I was dating a river guide. Shout out to him.
- 1:12:29He knows who he is if he listens.
- 1:12:31I don't know who knows it would be cool to get him on actually.
- 1:12:33He's really cool dude. But he like during like a weird
- 1:12:39winter period, not weird winter period, but like there's a
- 1:12:42there's like a couple month period where the bald eagles are
- 1:12:44like like fleas on trees up in Washington on the Skagit River.
- 1:12:51And I went up there and visited him once or twice, I can't
- 1:12:55remember. And that was really awesome to
- 1:12:59see. I had already fallen in love
- 1:13:01with bald eagles, like on the river, like working down at
- 1:13:03Mariel and stuff. But then that, like, really
- 1:13:05solidified it, like, seeing them, hearing them, living with
- 1:13:09them essentially. It was really cool.
- 1:13:11Yeah. So that was a really cool.
- 1:13:13Just like hundreds. Yeah, everywhere.
- 1:13:15Like everywhere bald eagles. Everywhere Bald eagles.
- 1:13:17Yeah, with your with your kind. With my kind, yeah.
- 1:13:21Yeah. So it was really neat anyway.
- 1:13:23Awesome, thank you. This has been a wonderful treat
- 1:13:26Heather to to hear more of your story.
- 1:13:29I'm saying this on behalf of these people cuz I've heard most
- 1:13:32of this a few times also. Tell me.
- 1:13:35I haven't told Emily this, but I I came up with my name for my
- 1:13:39hiking and coffee club. Oh.
- 1:13:41Finally, what is it? Are you going to unveil it?
- 1:13:43Yeah. I will unveil it because it's
- 1:13:45not quite ready to be launched because it's like not a thing
- 1:13:48really. I just, I'm just like.
- 1:13:50It's an idea. It's coming to life.
- 1:13:52It is, yeah. Grounds.
- 1:13:54Awesome coffee. Grounds and grounds.
- 1:13:56Like what the fuck? What more do you need?
- 1:13:58I know. And don't steal that from me.
- 1:14:00Yeah, but it's going to be grounds and then it'll be hike,
- 1:14:02coffee, social. Love it.
- 1:14:05My bad. So anyway, there's a there's
- 1:14:07another thing. That Heather does is host group
- 1:14:11outings she Heather has the send her mountain biking club women's
- 1:14:16group no drop mountain biking meet up social rides social ride
- 1:14:22she's doing she's about to begin this hike and coffee club just
- 1:14:27go hike and drink coffee make coffee drink coffee.
- 1:14:32She does semi regular goddess gatherings, invites a bunch of
- 1:14:36girls to a lovely location to snack and yap and.
- 1:14:41Snack and yap baby, that's actually really good.
- 1:14:44Thank you. And those are just some of the
- 1:14:47awesome things that Heather does to host and build community and
- 1:14:51connect friends and connect with her friends.
- 1:14:54And Heather's just a fucking delight.
- 1:14:58And it really has been a I've had many great honors in my life
- 1:15:05and it's hard to put them any above another.
- 1:15:09So they all get to sit together and starting and hosting this
- 1:15:14podcast with you is absolutely one of those great honors.
- 1:15:17And. You don't even.
- 1:15:19Know for all of the reasons and one especially in that I've
- 1:15:25gotten to see so much growth and personal development in you in
- 1:15:30the last year and seeing you be so dedicated to improving
- 1:15:36yourself in the ways that you've identified you want to improve
- 1:15:40and how much you just throw yourself into doing the things
- 1:15:45you want to do and really committing to.
- 1:15:48The bit, the the. Life that you want to live and
- 1:15:51the person that you want to be and you can be susceptible to
- 1:15:57other people's input and also don't tell you what to fucking
- 1:16:01do because you're going to do whatever you want to do right
- 1:16:04right and I respect that I'm. Getting, I'm getting.
- 1:16:06I feel like just this last few years, I had a big moment where
- 1:16:12I was really mean one time. Yeah.
- 1:16:14And it really changed the trajectory of my life.
- 1:16:18Only my closest people will know about that situation that
- 1:16:21happened. And since then, I have been on a
- 1:16:26journey to just become a more soft human.
- 1:16:31Yeah. And I might make mistakes, you
- 1:16:36know, here and there, but I also grow from those mistakes.
- 1:16:41And. Yeah.
- 1:16:44That's, that's what they say. The only way for us to grow is
- 1:16:48to mess up and see where where our areas of improvement, where
- 1:16:53our our cracks and our tweaks are so that we can recalibrate
- 1:16:58and. I've been great.
- 1:17:00Your acknowledgement of that and the dedication to your
- 1:17:05correction. Yeah, I just want to be the like
- 1:17:07that person that. Oh, is this when?
- 1:17:12So when you when your body expires and your soul leaves
- 1:17:15this point of existence, how do you want to be remembered?
- 1:17:17Yeah, so that was just bringing up this the last celebration of
- 1:17:22life that I did go to. I don't know if it was the last,
- 1:17:25but it was close to the last. It was my friend Larry, who was
- 1:17:28a river guide that I met at Mariel, and his celebration of
- 1:17:33life was so beautiful. I was pregnant with Roscoe.
- 1:17:39I remember when I went there and it was just like the amount of
- 1:17:43people, the love, the stories that were told from the people
- 1:17:47getting up and chatting about Larry.
- 1:17:49And like all of his little his just his little like things that
- 1:17:54he would do for people and little like memory things and
- 1:17:57like, you know, like written letters and like just stuff that
- 1:18:01like really touched people's life.
- 1:18:04That's what I want to be. And like, that's all he was
- 1:18:06trying to do is inspire others like he I have a little thing
- 1:18:09that says live like Larry because it's it's actually like
- 1:18:12a boat toggle. Yeah, my mom has one on her
- 1:18:15boat. Okay.
- 1:18:16And and it's true, I actually would like to get it tattooed
- 1:18:20because I just it, it's just a reminder of like being a soft
- 1:18:24human smile like so simple, just smile at people.
- 1:18:28So like, and I just want to be after that moment I had that
- 1:18:32negative moment I had. And then and then seeing I think
- 1:18:37the the funeral was right after having not they were right after
- 1:18:42having that really low moment that I had.
- 1:18:44It was kind of in the same era, but I was just like, dude, no,
- 1:18:48like you want people to show up at your funeral.
- 1:18:51So I just want to be remembered truly, like as a smiley kind.
- 1:18:58I'm still working on the kind part.
- 1:18:59Like it's a practice when I'm just like a spicy only child
- 1:19:03that always got my way. Like I've had to really rewire
- 1:19:05my brain, but like inspiring friendly, like I don't ever want
- 1:19:11like I've never really had any like beef with people because
- 1:19:14like that's so pointless. Like I just try to like squash
- 1:19:17stuff if they happen or like whatever.
- 1:19:20And I don't know, I just want to be an all income.
- 1:19:23I want to be remembered as like an all-encompassing awesome
- 1:19:27human and like mom too. Like I can get into the my
- 1:19:33momming, but like, that's an episode for another day because
- 1:19:36I, I could go down the rabbit hole with my kids, but like, I
- 1:19:39want to be remembered for just like being a really inspiring
- 1:19:44how somebody should live. Like, oh, she was so fun and
- 1:19:46nice and cool and spirited and like, like, just like everything
- 1:19:52was positive. That's what's like everything
- 1:19:53was positive. Yeah, where somebody can go into
- 1:19:56a situation really like, what would Heather do?
- 1:19:59Yeah, yeah. I would Heather be here.
- 1:20:02I want to be like that. Yeah, just fun and just a good
- 1:20:05friend. Just want to be as a good
- 1:20:06friend, solid mom that tried to like, just tried, right?
- 1:20:12Like that's all we can do. Yeah.
- 1:20:14So that's how I remembered. I think you're doing a good job
- 1:20:17of that and getting better every day.
- 1:20:18And a connector. I like to connect to people, you
- 1:20:21know, like. Boy, do I know.
- 1:20:24Help people create community, yeah.
- 1:20:27Absolutely. And what is your favorite piece
- 1:20:30of outdoor gear equipment that you always have with you?
- 1:20:33These tacos so I love me some tacos.
- 1:20:39This is, I've had these tacos for almost 10 years, 10 years,
- 1:20:4410 years, and they're there to their time to be retired.
- 1:20:51But yeah, I would say I hike, I've hiked in them.
- 1:20:54I don't always, but like if I'm only have these, they will
- 1:20:57suffice. I could hike a bolt and be like
- 1:20:59pretty fine. Like not a whole lot of
- 1:21:03blisters, which is good. So those.
- 1:21:05Yeah. What else?
- 1:21:06What else? What else?
- 1:21:09Nothing else, just that just I'm always have my tacos usually.
- 1:21:13Yeah, I see that. And yes, yeah, keep your blue
- 1:21:18eyes and your light skin shaded. Yeah, always have a hat I.
- 1:21:23Feel like my voice has been very deep this episode, so let me sit
- 1:21:26up here and change my voice a little bit.
- 1:21:29And what is a piece of advice for your younger self?
- 1:21:37Just be nicer, be nice, Heather, calm down, be nice, have
- 1:21:44patience, chill out a little bit.
- 1:21:47Like, you don't have to be like just, you know, be more
- 1:21:51thoughtful, more mindful, but like.
- 1:21:53More to mirror. More to mirror.
- 1:21:55Yeah, more to mirror. But also like don't like that
- 1:21:59could be like being mindful. I think I plagued that with also
- 1:22:04like my virtue signaling, looking back like, oh, I'm just
- 1:22:07being mindful. It's like, no, bitch, you were
- 1:22:09like putting people down that like we're in bad places in in
- 1:22:13a, in a judgmental way that was not necessary.
- 1:22:16Like now I'm just like, whatever, I don't know what
- 1:22:18they're going through. I don't know why they left the
- 1:22:20diaper on the side of the Oh, well, like maybe mention it, but
- 1:22:24don't get upset. Just pick it up.
- 1:22:26Just a diaper. Let's let's just move on.
- 1:22:30Maybe they forgot, you know, giving people the benefit of the
- 1:22:32doubt, giving people grace, giving people grace.
- 1:22:34I would say that that's like just give, just give life more
- 1:22:37grace. Heather absolutely.
- 1:22:40And be. More graceful.
- 1:22:43Dancer, you're pretty graceful in your own way, and what is a
- 1:22:50piece of advice for somebody wanting to get into mountain
- 1:22:55biking or. Community.
- 1:22:56Building or community building or.
- 1:22:58On the real. Estate or hiking with friends or
- 1:23:05parenting wild kids outside. Well, pick one and I'll tell
- 1:23:11you, pick one. Mountain biking.
- 1:23:13OK, even though we barely talked about mountain biking in this
- 1:23:16episode, it's. Big on me.
- 1:23:17It's big on my life. Yeah.
- 1:23:18Mountain. Biking it is what you drive
- 1:23:20conversation towards very often in other episodes.
- 1:23:24That's funny to notice or it's like good to notice that.
- 1:23:26That's I didn't notice that. Anybody who says that they don't
- 1:23:32bike, you say you bring up. Do you ever?
- 1:23:34Do you mountain bike? Do you want a mountain bike?
- 1:23:36Yes. Do you want a mountain bike?
- 1:23:37Do you want to go mountain biking?
- 1:23:40Well, because mountain biking is literally like it's that type
- 1:23:45too fun. It is amazing.
- 1:23:47I love mountain biking. Not usually while I'm doing it,
- 1:23:51like I like it while I'm doing it too, but like it's afterwards
- 1:23:53I'm feeling. After.
- 1:23:55I just like such a dopamine hit, yeah.
- 1:24:00OK, yeah, advice for somebody wanting to get into mountain
- 1:24:02biking? Just come into the bike shop and
- 1:24:05we'll hook it up. Like truly like all you have to
- 1:24:08do. Like we are a community driven
- 1:24:10bike shop and I try to direct people in there because we have
- 1:24:13our Thursday night group ride that happens every Thursday,
- 1:24:17rain or shine, light or dark, all Thursdays of the year.
- 1:24:21Maybe like one or two Sean has to take off because we're doing
- 1:24:24something and then he usually gets somebody else to host it.
- 1:24:27So it still. Happens and where do those
- 1:24:28happen? We rotate places, so mostly
- 1:24:32Cathedral Hills and Mountain of the Rogue.
- 1:24:34I would like to get a little bit more Dollar Mountain, but Dollar
- 1:24:37Mountain is a bit of a steep incline at first, which is a
- 1:24:42barrier to entry. It's kind of more of an E bike,
- 1:24:49an E bike mountain. Unfortunately, you have to
- 1:24:52really have some good stamina or take breaks along the way
- 1:24:55climbing up too. Anyway, I haven't explored a ton
- 1:24:58of it. I need to we're we have a girls
- 1:25:00group ride out there soon. Cool.
- 1:25:02But he needs to incorporate a little bit more of that and he
- 1:25:04will over time. But yeah, so that's rotating at
- 1:25:086:30 Thursday, 6:30 PM on Thursdays and then and my girls
- 1:25:15group ride is every other Thursday for now.
- 1:25:17And while it kind of builds and we'll see if it can go every
- 1:25:20Thursday or not, but that's kind of all I can afford for a
- 1:25:22babysitter on Thursdays. Your community ride.
- 1:25:27And we do a once a month, second Saturday.
- 1:25:29Saturday of the month we do a joyride, which is we ride from
- 1:25:34the bike shop to the weekend beer company and that's actually
- 1:25:39a really good entry but to biking in general and we have
- 1:25:44rentals at the shop and usually if you like message me, I will
- 1:25:49just reserve you a bike for free.
- 1:25:51If you want to come like I'm very much on like we do have
- 1:25:54rentals for the general population that like, you know,
- 1:25:58that are just like I need a rental.
- 1:25:59I didn't know about you or da da da.
- 1:26:00They will pay the full price. But like for people that are
- 1:26:03like, Hey, Heather, I really want to go.
- 1:26:05I'm a mountain bike. Maybe I'm thinking about getting
- 1:26:071. I don't even know if I want to
- 1:26:08can I do that? I'm usually like we have a bike
- 1:26:10for you like I and. If you go into the bike shop and
- 1:26:12you mentioned go wildly, Sean will say right on.
- 1:26:17Sean will say, cool, you should just message me first if you
- 1:26:21need to borrow a bike because that's, you got to kind of go
- 1:26:25through me to go to get a free bike essentially.
- 1:26:27I mean, they're my bikes too. I own them 5050.
- 1:26:30But like still like if you just come in mentioning it and I've
- 1:26:33never corresponded with you before, that's it's reserved for
- 1:26:36friends, you know, and all you have to do to be a friend is
- 1:26:39message me. And then you make a personal
- 1:26:42connection, make a personal connection.
- 1:26:43Be like, hey girl, I saw this and like my family wants to come
- 1:26:46out like can you do 2 bikes? And yeah, I'd be like, totally,
- 1:26:50I want to get those bikes out on on whatever surface.
- 1:26:54So yeah. So biking for biking, it's we
- 1:26:57have a good entry level program type of thing through the group
- 1:27:02ride. But like starting, starting out,
- 1:27:04I would just find a used bike online.
- 1:27:08Very simple, 500 bucks. If you can muster, you could
- 1:27:13actually buy a a bike from us for 500.
- 1:27:17I think they do have maybe 6, maybe 7 anyway sub 1000.
- 1:27:22But you can buy a decent bike online for a couple 100 bucks
- 1:27:26and just go have it run through at a bike shop.
- 1:27:29Make sure it's working properly. Like the shifting's working
- 1:27:32because the bike does make the difference.
- 1:27:34And and then literally just go out to the park and start like
- 1:27:38figuring out braking, like how to use your brakes, like how to
- 1:27:42squeeze them and then how to which you don't want to use your
- 1:27:45front 1A ton if you're going downhill.
- 1:27:47But figuring out how to shift, really just figure out how to
- 1:27:51shift, how that works, how it works.
- 1:27:53Do maybe find a slight incline, figure out shifting and how that
- 1:27:56works. And that's really you can get
- 1:27:58going on your own and then come join a group ride.
- 1:28:01And you will literally, if you consistently come to a group
- 1:28:04ride, you will be then called bike fam.
- 1:28:07That's the bike family. And you're just instantly in.
- 1:28:11You will, if you connect with someone or Sean or me or
- 1:28:15whatever, then you will be invited to our camp outs, our
- 1:28:18bike weekends. Like we just, we have to shoot
- 1:28:21it out. And even the newest people to
- 1:28:24our crew, we're like, hey, you want to come to this thing?
- 1:28:26Like, we're very inclusive, truly.
- 1:28:29Love it, love it and if people want to hang out with you, find
- 1:28:35out more about you, get in touch with you.
- 1:28:37How Buy a house for me Buy a house?
- 1:28:40From you if you're moving here, how?
- 1:28:41Can they get a hold of you? If you how can they find you or
- 1:28:44if you want to be found? Oh well, I have my, you know,
- 1:28:49social media. So Heather White on Facebook,
- 1:28:51it's Heather go wildly on TikTok and Instagram where I do my food
- 1:28:57reviews. That's fun.
- 1:29:00And that's all. A whole other aspect of me that
- 1:29:02we didn't even get into, but. Heather is a multifaceted.
- 1:29:07Diamond, Diamond in the rough. A rough giant.
- 1:29:11A rough cut. Diamond.
- 1:29:12A rough cut diamond. So yeah, just message me.
- 1:29:17Really, that's all that needs to happen.
- 1:29:19You just message me where you can go into the bike shop and
- 1:29:20meet my husband. He is the bearded 1, not the
- 1:29:23redhead. You can contact go wildly and.
- 1:29:27Yeah, you can contact us. We have emails and stuff and
- 1:29:30yeah, yeah, I mean, that's pretty much it.
- 1:29:33And when it comes to this podcast, who would be your like
- 1:29:38dream guest to have on? We just talked about this this
- 1:29:42morning. Well, I didn't know like we got,
- 1:29:44we got asked that question at 1,000,000 cups and I was like,
- 1:29:47Dang, I don't know, like actually I'd have to think about
- 1:29:50that. But I think it would be two
- 1:29:54people. I would love to have a
- 1:29:57conversation with Mickey Agarwal.
- 1:30:02Agarwal, she does some cool stuff.
- 1:30:06She's not like super like out. She's pretty outdoorsy, but
- 1:30:09she's a Burning Man person. I don't know.
- 1:30:11I've just been really like, I love.
- 1:30:13She's very aligned with me and like what?
- 1:30:15She's constantly doing projects. She's the creator of Tushy.
- 1:30:21The bidet. The bidet and now hero diapers
- 1:30:26she has a son that's about my age I love her fashion choices
- 1:30:29I. Your age or your son's age?
- 1:30:31Her son and my son are similar ages.
- 1:30:34We're we're kind of aligned with our like vibe.
- 1:30:39I just really like what she's got going on and she does a lot
- 1:30:42of cool projects and she's really successful and she's like
- 1:30:45placed herself a lot of in a lot of good places.
- 1:30:48And I've read her her and her sister's books.
- 1:30:50She's a twin. And they're both kind of like,
- 1:30:53you know, kind of entrepreneurs. Cool.
- 1:30:58Her sister does the daybreaker, which is the morning raves.
- 1:31:01OK, so they're just. Like my little, I think of my
- 1:31:04friend Liz turned me on to her and she's like, hey, you kind of
- 1:31:07remind me of her with your like hats and stuff like that.
- 1:31:09And I'm like, oh, that's cool. So I just connected.
- 1:31:12I've never reached out. I probably should, but I've just
- 1:31:14always been a cuck in the corner.
- 1:31:16Just like watching, you know, just watching her.
- 1:31:20This is silent observer. This is Silent Observer cute and
- 1:31:24she's been on a few pods and so I'm like, oh, that'd be cool to
- 1:31:26have her on and chat about that. And then I this morning I was
- 1:31:31like, oh, that'd be a really cool person.
- 1:31:33Les Stroud, the original Survivor man, would be a really
- 1:31:37cool person to have on the pod to really like, talk about the
- 1:31:41outdoors and stuff. I mean, he looks kind of like my
- 1:31:43dad. Yeah, that's kind of cool little
- 1:31:45connection. Peace.
- 1:31:47Cute. Yeah.
- 1:31:48Love it. Here we go.
- 1:31:49Here we go. And I thought I would have
- 1:31:52another question, but. Do you not?
- 1:31:54I don't What was the what's another one of our questions?
- 1:31:59Like we were talking about like, hey, like where's your?
- 1:32:03What's your favorite place to recreate?
- 1:32:04Yeah. What's your favorite place to
- 1:32:05recreate or like and create community in Southern Oregon?
- 1:32:09Just got to put yourself out there.
- 1:32:10But favorite place directory is literally just a day.
- 1:32:13So since I have two kids, it's it is hard for me to get out and
- 1:32:17do like these like more Emily style, like she can go down the
- 1:32:20river and like she really has like a ton of free will with
- 1:32:24kids. You got to have to, you have
- 1:32:25free will, but you have to plan a little bit more.
- 1:32:27So it's, you know, it's a little bit more logistics.
- 1:32:32So I just like recreating day recreating.
- 1:32:34So I love me a Riverside hang, Riverside hang.
- 1:32:40And I actually prefer the Applegate for Riverside hanging
- 1:32:44or the Illinois versus the Rogue or Creek.
- 1:32:50I like the creeks. Like when Francis was talking
- 1:32:52about like creeks and stuff, I'm like, I can get down with that.
- 1:32:55There's some really, really cool creeks to like, hang out.
- 1:33:00River, Creekside, Riverside. Yeah.
- 1:33:02So that's kind of how I like to recreate or mountain biking.
- 1:33:05Yeah. Or hiking.
- 1:33:06I mean, I do a lot of hiking too.
- 1:33:08Inevitably, I did a lot of hiking last year, not so much
- 1:33:10this year. I'm trying to like, kind of
- 1:33:11that's why I'm working a lot this year.
- 1:33:13This is what's changed. It's like I'm working a ton in
- 1:33:16my like career to like be able to have the money to do all the
- 1:33:20things, all my aspirations, really.
- 1:33:22Like the real estate is like a portal for me living my like
- 1:33:27best outdoors life. I just need the money.
- 1:33:29So it, you know, but it helps because I do have a passion for
- 1:33:32real estate and like helping people and connecting people.
- 1:33:34That's like where it's at. But yeah, so that's why I'm
- 1:33:40starting the coffee club because I'm like, oh, I need to hike,
- 1:33:42but I also have to work. So I have to kind of like tie
- 1:33:44them all together and like make it a thing.
- 1:33:47And so that's, and it kind of holds me to getting out.
- 1:33:51Yeah, because I've been, it's been a little bit harder for me
- 1:33:53to just like get out. Like, I'm a big fan of combining
- 1:33:59the things that you want and need to do and doing things that
- 1:34:04you want to do regardless and inviting people along.
- 1:34:08And so if nobody shows up, you're still doing what you want
- 1:34:10to do. And if people do show up, great,
- 1:34:12Now it's a social activity, but not waiting for other people to
- 1:34:16go and do the things you want to do.
- 1:34:17I'll just be at the trailhead at this time with my coffee.
- 1:34:21Like we're gonna the, the thought is to like make coffee
- 1:34:25up at a spot like once we've hiked and then we'll make coffee
- 1:34:28and hang out in a little bit and then hike back down, clean up
- 1:34:31and hike back down with our coffee.
- 1:34:32And like, that's what it is. It's kind of like half
- 1:34:35networking group, half hiking club, half just like, let's
- 1:34:39drink some coffee. I.
- 1:34:41Have. It is.
- 1:34:44It's like a band diagram anyway. And so, yeah.
- 1:34:48Great. We thought this was going to be
- 1:34:50a short episode, but this is likely about as long as all of
- 1:34:53our other episodes. So you're welcome.
- 1:34:55And that's all for today. Yes, also, if you want to hear
- 1:35:01any more about anything that I've talked about since we are
- 1:35:05the host and we'll do this for Emily's episode too.
- 1:35:08You want to high five with her foot?
- 1:35:09Woo, Oh, that hero. Woo, Ow, that was kick me harder
- 1:35:14harder. OK, I don't know why.
- 1:35:16Wow, sorry, it's the book I'm reading anyway.
- 1:35:21Yeah, please respond, ask questions, ask.
- 1:35:24Questions like write in the comments below.
- 1:35:26Like if you want to hear more about something specific I
- 1:35:28chatted about or my life, please ask questions.
- 1:35:31We're going to get ready to do an AQ and a type of episode.
- 1:35:36On our in our bio on Instagram we have a link with a form where
- 1:35:41you can ask us anything that we will then answer on an upcoming
- 1:35:44episode. Yeah.
- 1:35:45And I think our goal is to do more Emily and iPods too to just
- 1:35:49so our listeners can get to know us better.
- 1:35:51I think that's we're going to sprinkle those in and that'll be
- 1:35:55great for a few reasons. Sprinkling in to make I'm sorry
- 1:36:00my yeah, my arm fell asleep guys.
- 1:36:04Yeah, yeah. Bringing more of our stories
- 1:36:06into the mix so that you can. Get to know us, you can.
- 1:36:08Get to know us, we build our credibility and sometimes we
- 1:36:13have guests that have to cancel last minute and it's really hard
- 1:36:17to fill that spot last minute so we can take advantage of that by
- 1:36:22recording an episode of just us and.
- 1:36:24Also, we always are like we should have started the we
- 1:36:28should have started the camera because we whenever we talk it's
- 1:36:31like we're talking about good shit.
- 1:36:34We yap in the best, we're yapping like we're just fun and
- 1:36:38so for sure. When the camera turns on like a
- 1:36:40different a different personality kind of tweaks.
- 1:36:44Out I kind of. I try to not have that happen.
- 1:36:46Yeah, I try to forget that there's even a camera here, but
- 1:36:48just to like be in a for more formal sitting situation.
- 1:36:54We're gonna we're gonna start sprinkling them in.
- 1:36:56More practice more, more getting to know.
- 1:36:58It's also what I was saying when my hand was going.
- 1:37:01It's like a good fill in episode, yeah.
- 1:37:02So to just try to like Bulk Up and for people to get to know us
- 1:37:06and. Stuff like, it's not like it's
- 1:37:07not even fill in necessarily, it's just it's in the mix.
- 1:37:11Well, we've had some people reach out and guess be like, I
- 1:37:15really want to kind of get to know you guys more and like your
- 1:37:18story and background and like what makes you credible to host
- 1:37:20an outdoor podcast like so here we go.
- 1:37:23This is it. Welcome.
- 1:37:26I'm Heather, I'm Emily, and together we're go wildly.
