Transcript
- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and then other we E word, elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, and across the interwebs.
- 0:16Tyler Johnson: from me is, Tad and Phil, did you hear the thwips that time?
- 0:20Phil: Those were… those were crisp, crisp.
- 0:22Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 0:23Phil: That's like a… it's like a fresh web cartridge right there.
- 0:26Tyler Johnson: I thought so, you know what I mean? I was working on it. And I thought we were at school.
- 0:31Phil: Slating comics this week.
- 0:33Tyler Johnson: That would be funny. An escalating… Emancipating.
- 0:41Phil: Tad's giving me the finger right now, so…
- 0:44Tyler Johnson: What happened?
- 0:45Phil: He doesn't appreciate the,
- 0:47Tad Eggleston: Hard on that phrase.
- 0:49Phil: so elevated.
- 0:50Tyler Johnson: You did.
- 0:50Phil: escalate. It is.
- 0:51Tyler Johnson: You did, Tad. I love it.
- 0:53Phil: Elevate, I'm sure.
- 0:55Tyler Johnson: You know what?
- 0:56Tad Eggleston: Don't fuck with the tagline.
- 0:57Phil: I'm not talking about the tagline.
- 0:59Tyler Johnson: Tad, I really appreciate that you made that. It's a good tagline. I've just always struggled with memory, and I don't like to make notes.
- 1:06Tad Eggleston: That's why I'm pointing at Phil, because Phil's the one that suggested a different E-word.
- 1:16Phil: It's still vertical movement. I'm sorry.
- 1:19Tyler Johnson: Congratulations.
- 1:20Phil: Escalade is not the better word. Elevate is a better word.
- 1:23Tyler Johnson: Escalate, yeah, almost like it's like, this is not good, let's escalate the problem.
- 1:27Phil: Right.
- 1:28Tad Eggleston: I, I, I feel like Kevin Smith while, while, while filming Clerks. Read the words! The words are on the page!
- 1:37Phil: Oh, I love how he talked about, he used to, he used to be like, yeah, you know, with the guys I know, I can just, you know, take them behind the camera, smack around a little bit, and tell them what they need to say. But when he had to direct Bruce Willis, he couldn't, he couldn't do that.
- 1:51Tyler Johnson: No.
- 1:52Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 1:53Tad Eggleston: Well, and apparently Bruce Willis was just… weird on set, too. I wonder if it was, like, early in his.
- 1:59Tyler Johnson: Well, I'm sure with the dementia.
- 2:01Tyler Johnson: Because, listen, guys, my dad is in the early stages of that, and I can account for that… at the time that he was filming the Kevin Smith movie, I can imagine that things were starting to set in, and like Tad said, just weird.
- 2:15Tad Eggleston: I mean, I, I, I heard, I heard… Kevin, talk about cop-out.
- 2:21Tad Eggleston: before that had been announced. I'm like, well, Bruce sounds like a dick, but that also sounds like…
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: something's going on. And then it was, like, a year or two later that his dementia was announced. I'm like…
- 2:36Phil: I had never put that together before now, so that's.
- 2:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 2:40Tyler Johnson: It makes sense, I mean, like.
- 2:41Phil: It's a little sad, but, you know.
- 2:43Tyler Johnson: It is, yeah, it is.
- 2:44Phil: Yeah.
- 2:45Tyler Johnson: My stepmom has told me stories about my dad and his bizarre antics and behavior, so I can imagine.
- 2:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah?
- 2:55Tad Eggleston: Last in, first out.
- 2:58Tyler Johnson: Hmm.
- 2:58Tad Eggleston: And that makes for… and also, the things that you do the least of will vanish.
- 3:04Tad Eggleston: fastest.
- 3:06Tad Eggleston: You know, so yeah, it's… it's…
- 3:09Tyler Johnson: It's sad, it's scary. It's scary. I am so concerned about where my dad…
- 3:17Tyler Johnson: will eventually end up, right? Will it keep progressing until the end of life? Will it… you know what I mean?
- 3:24Tyler Johnson: I don't know.
- 3:26Tad Eggleston: Unfortunately, probably.
- 3:28Tyler Johnson: Ugh.
- 3:29Tad Eggleston: But I'll tell you right now, from my experience.
- 3:36Tad Eggleston: There's only one stage that's truly bad if you can accept it.
- 3:42Tad Eggleston: Okay? And that is… The period where they know something's wrong, and they keep forgetting what.
- 3:54Tyler Johnson: Mmm.
- 3:55Tyler Johnson: And you have to remind them?
- 3:56Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 3:57Phil: Yeah, that sounds…
- 3:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, yeah, kind of, it depends on what makes them most comfortable. I mean, the general industry wisdom is don't remind them.
- 4:08Tad Eggleston: there are some people that will just fixate on what is wrong with me, and will actually be calmed when you say, well, you've got Alzheimer's.
- 4:16Phil: Yeah.
- 4:17Tad Eggleston: That'll make them sad, but at least they'll understand.
- 4:21Phil: Huh.
- 4:22Tad Eggleston: For as long as they can hold it in their head.
- 4:26Tad Eggleston: But then you wind up sometimes having that conversation over and over and over and over and over.
- 4:34Tad Eggleston: But until you get to that point, they don't realize anything's wrong, and they're gonna be happiest if you don't point it out to them.
- 4:43Tad Eggleston: If you just kind of work around it as much as possible.
- 4:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Encourage them to do the… like, that's the period where you need to encourage, like, as much activity, particularly brain activity, as possible.
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: Because again, the things you don't do, you lose.
- 5:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah. So… so, encourage them to keep making themselves lunch, or encourage them to do anything they enjoy doing.
- 5:08Phil: Okay. Yeah, that's good advice.
- 5:10Tad Eggleston: actually do it.
- 5:12Tad Eggleston: Right, great.
- 5:15Tad Eggleston: Like, there are a lot of drugs out there right now, and most of them will pause things for a year.
- 5:23Tad Eggleston: That's the best time to be taking them.
- 5:27Tad Eggleston: Isn't that early stages, when you can see it and they can't, which is problematic, because you need to talk to them at least enough that they understand that they're slipping.
- 5:39Tad Eggleston: to slow down the… because the last thing you want is for them to get stuck in that miserable stage. I mean, way too many times when I was in dementia care, I saw people who were on the drugs that slowed them down for the stage where they knew something was wrong, but didn't know what it was. And I'm sitting there going, you're just prolonging their agony.
- 5:59Phil: Ish.
- 6:00Phil: That's rough.
- 6:01Tad Eggleston: And then there's the stage that's the hardest for the family to really…
- 6:09Tad Eggleston: be okay with, and this is where, like, when they hit this stage.
- 6:14Tad Eggleston: I don't blame the families who don't come.
- 6:17Tad Eggleston: to visit.
- 6:18Tad Eggleston: Right? But it's not actually a bad stage, and that's like the end stage, where they've forgotten that they've forgotten.
- 6:25Phil: Yeah.
- 6:26Tyler Johnson: Mmm, I'm.
- 6:27Tad Eggleston: They're just living in the moment.
- 6:29Tyler Johnson: They're living in the dream, you know what I mean?
- 6:31Tad Eggleston: As long… as long as they're put in an environment where the moments are pretty good.
- 6:37Tad Eggleston: I mean, this is where, like.
- 6:40Phil: Yeah.
- 6:41Tad Eggleston: The quality of their home care, or the quality of whatever facility they're in matters, and the things… and the things that matter are way more
- 6:51Tad Eggleston: entertainment and interaction opportunities than… Like, healthcare stuff, because…
- 6:59Tad Eggleston: There's also nothing crueler than trying to prolong the life of somebody who's not really themselves anymore.
- 7:10Phil: Yeah.
- 7:10Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 7:12Tad Eggleston: So, that, that's my, that's my two cents from a decade in dementia care.
- 7:18Tyler Johnson: I agree, yep.
- 7:20Tad Eggleston: You know, but again, like…
- 7:22Tad Eggleston: I'll go a little bit deeper, like, for that end stage, like, if you can accept them and meet them at that point, that can be one of the happiest points, because they're always having a good time. They might not remember who you are, but they're happy to have a good time with you.
- 7:39Phil: that's one of the only… it was, like, I forget the exact relation to them, but it was, like, distant family member, great-aunt, or somebody.
- 7:47Phil: when I was a kid and we were visiting relatives that we only saw the one time, you know, my dad was like, oh, she has Alzheimer's or dementia. So… so you can talk to her like normal, and it's fine, but she's not… she's never gonna remember you. She's never gonna remember who you are, like.
- 8:02Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 8:03Phil: Yeah.
- 8:03Tad Eggleston: But then the other thing is, if you show up.
- 8:08Tad Eggleston: and you can't handle it, if you show up and seeing them like that makes you sad, or you wind up crying, or you're trying to get them to remember things that they just won't remember, that sort of thing, you can fuck up their day. Yeah. You can fuck up their week.
- 8:24Phil: Yeah.
- 8:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah, for sure.
- 8:26Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, again, like, I used to… I mean…
- 8:31Phil: I went over…
- 8:32Tad Eggleston: only say it to family members if I needed to reassure them if they weren't coming as often, like, if they were going, I know I should visit more, right?
- 8:41Phil: For some reason…
- 8:42Tad Eggleston: But I'd say it to my staff members a lot, like, look, you're complaining that their family doesn't visit them, but you were also really, really frustrated about the 48 hours after the last time their family visited. Maybe…
- 8:56Tad Eggleston: Those are connected.
- 8:59Phil: I was just about… not to… not to derail completely, but do you have a best, comics about dementia? Have you ever… have you ever read a good one?
- 9:06Tad Eggleston: There have been, there have been a few good. I like, Wrinkles from Self Made Hero. I just saw there's another one that I… I just heard about that I need to read, and I don't remember the name of it.
- 9:19Phil: The only one I can think of is there's actually one of the later issues in Grant Morrison's Batman Incorporated run.
- 9:26Phil: That was about dementia. It was, like, the maze that Bruce and Damien were going through was, like, Dr. Dedalis, I think it was? And… and it was, like, a representation of his mind and how he had dementia.
- 9:40Phil: All that kind of stuff. Gotcha. It was a good one. It was a really good issue.
- 9:43Tad Eggleston: But Tyler is on the clock, so he should start moving on a little bit, particularly because there's happier news! The Milwaukee Brewers are up two games to none in the World Series. What's more is…
- 10:00Tad Eggleston: I almost hope… That there's drama, and it goes more than 4 games, because, like… if…
- 10:12Tad Eggleston: I can already feel that this could be one of those sweeps.
- 10:17Tad Eggleston: That gets treated like… Ew.
- 10:21Tad Eggleston: Was one team dominated the other, when it was really just…
- 10:25Tad Eggleston: one team out-gridded and caught the brakes a little bit better than the other. Like, historically, everybody looks back at… I mean, at least everybody in Chicago, I don't know how many people outside of Chicago will remember it, but the 2005 World Series between the White Sox and the…
- 10:42Tad Eggleston: the… the Astros was a White Sox sweep.
- 10:46Tad Eggleston: But, like, they won the 4 games by a total of five runs. One of the games was a 14-inning affair, the longest in World Series history at the time. One of the games was a 1-0 shutout. You know, they were 4
- 11:06Tad Eggleston: REALLY good games.
- 11:08Tad Eggleston: that all just happened to fall the White Sox direction. And I can already kind of feel like… like the Brewers took an early lead in Game 1, and managed to…
- 11:18Tad Eggleston: hold back.
- 11:20Tad Eggleston: the Rays to win 3-2, and then last night, they actually fell behind 5- or 4-0 before they even came to bat, and clawed their bay back.
- 11:33Tad Eggleston: And, and, and, and, and… Took a 5-4 lead in the 8th, and held it for…
- 11:41Tad Eggleston: an inning to win the game. So, like, Really, really good games.
- 11:46Tad Eggleston: and I just hope the narrative doesn't…
- 11:49Tad Eggleston: become that, like, the Brewers dominated the Rays, because it's just not true.
- 11:54Tyler Johnson: Anyway, I hope…
- 11:55Phil: That's how you know people… that's how you'll know if someone hasn't watched the games, if that's what they say.
- 12:00Tad Eggleston: Well, and also, also how much they pay attention to, like, the intricacies of baseball, rather than just the…
- 12:08Tad Eggleston: final score.
- 12:09Tyler Johnson: the final score. Yeah, because dominated doesn't mean just one, you know what I mean?
- 12:14Tad Eggleston: Right, I mean… It's got some basic…
- 12:17Phil: The wall is…
- 12:18Tad Eggleston: And I think it's because baseball is such a… different sport?
- 12:24Tad Eggleston: In terms of the… The amount of luck that's involved.
- 12:30Tad Eggleston: You know, there is a real amount of luck involved.
- 12:33Phil: Interesting.
- 12:33Tad Eggleston: You can't control Anything along… around… along the edges, right?
- 12:41Tad Eggleston: You know, the difference between a line out to third and a double can be inches, and like…
- 12:51Tad Eggleston: the batter doesn't get to decide whether or not those inches are… you know what I mean?
- 12:57Tad Eggleston: I can tell you guys are loving this. I'll get this slide done, and we'll move on.
- 13:06Phil: I was just about to say, I was just.
- 13:07Tyler Johnson: I just have…
- 13:08Phil: My favorite…
- 13:08Tyler Johnson: I have nothing to add. I'm not a baseball aficionado.
- 13:12Phil: Except for that one… that one issue of Uncanny X-Men where they play baseball. That's, like, my favorite baseball moment.
- 13:17Tyler Johnson: Oh, what?
- 13:18Phil: cross.
- 13:18Tyler Johnson: What about the Clark and Bruce issue? Remember the Clark and Bruce issue where they play baseball with their ladies?
- 13:24Phil: That was a fun one. That was a nice one.
- 13:27Tad Eggleston: There's been a lot of good baseball and comics.
- 13:30Phil: Pretty sure, I just haven't read most of it.
- 13:31Tad Eggleston: We have the Baseball and Comics Roundtable coming up in a little bit more than a week on 225.
- 13:37Tyler Johnson: Oh, really? That's awesome.
- 13:38Tad Eggleston: Yes, we do. But what I was saying is, like, almost every other sport, It's not inconceivable.
- 13:48Tad Eggleston: That a team could go undefeated.
- 13:53Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 13:53Phil: Maybe basketball. I don't think that there's.
- 13:55Tad Eggleston: The hockey and basketball seasons are a little bit too long.
- 13:59Tad Eggleston: to pull it off, but, like, the Bulls went 70-12 once.
- 14:04Phil: Yeah.
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: That's… that's, like, absolutely unheard of.
- 14:09Tad Eggleston: Like, the greatest baseball teams of all time win 2 games out of 3.
- 14:18Tad Eggleston: You know what I mean? That's just the type of sport it is.
- 14:22Phil: Oh yeah.
- 14:23Tad Eggleston: So, like, winning 4 games in a row… is something…
- 14:31Tad Eggleston: It's not the same, like, automatic domination of…
- 14:35Tad Eggleston: Of a football team that wins four games in a row.
- 14:39Phil: You know what I mean?
- 14:40Tad Eggleston: So, anyway…
- 14:42Tad Eggleston: Back to comics! Publishers Weekly has added a comics category to their Book Life Prize, the Book Life Prize.
- 14:49Tyler Johnson: Oh, that's cool.
- 14:50Tad Eggleston: Ew.
- 14:51Tad Eggleston: Is… it's $100 to enter, though…
- 14:57Tad Eggleston: The beat has a code for $20 off right now.
- 15:01Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 15:03Tad Eggleston: But… Importantly, just your… Entrance.
- 15:11Tad Eggleston: actually get… you not only become eligible for a $5,000 brand prize, or a $1,000
- 15:27Tad Eggleston: a $1,000 da-da-da category prize, I think?
- 15:33Tad Eggleston: But… Finalists get an industry blurb.
- 15:40Tad Eggleston: A publisher's Weekly featured, dedicated coverage.
- 15:44Tad Eggleston: Bringing booksellers, librarians, and industry inter…
- 15:48Tad Eggleston: and a $1,000 Book Baby ad package of targeted Facebook and Instagram campaigns to boost their book's visibility.
- 15:56Tad Eggleston: all entries.
- 15:59Tad Eggleston: Get it.
- 16:00Tad Eggleston: A professional evaluation written by Publisher's Weekly Reviewer, complete with numerical scoring and detailed feedback. So, to a certain extent, you could consider it
- 16:12Tad Eggleston: $100 that you're paying for a professional critic's report.
- 16:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, there's nobody more professional in the industry right now
- 16:20Tad Eggleston: When it comes to books in general, the publishers weekly, and they do a really good job with comics as well.
- 16:27Tad Eggleston: With the possibility to get it back and more if it turns out you're one of the best submissions.
- 16:32Tad Eggleston: So, so it's, it's cool that they added a, a… Illustrated.
- 16:41Tad Eggleston: Tier that includes comics.
- 16:44Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 16:44Phil: Yeah.
- 16:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 16:46Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been? Phil? Do you really want to move to Ohio?
- 16:50Phil: Yeah.
- 16:51Phil: I mean, I know that Ohio is not.
- 16:53Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 16:54Phil: I want to be part of the swing that…
- 16:58Tad Eggleston: So, next important question.
- 16:59Phil: Huh.
- 17:00Tad Eggleston: Can you move before… next Tuesday, and what are their voter registration rules?
- 17:07Phil: Unfortunately, it's not too… it's too late for me to vote in Ohio, but I can at least cast one in Tennessee right before… we actually… that was… Spoilers for my walk, but we got an apartment.
- 17:19Phil: So… Yeah.
- 17:22Tad Eggleston: T.
- 17:22Tyler Johnson: Well, I'm giving the two thumbs up right now.
- 17:25Tad Eggleston: Tennessee does also need your vote, but
- 17:28Phil: And unfortunately, I only get one, unlike some rich people.
- 17:32Tad Eggleston: Oh, holy shit.
- 17:34Phil: Yeah.
- 17:34Tad Eggleston: Did Vivek Ramaswamy stoop low this week?
- 17:37Phil: Yeah. And then double…
- 17:39Tad Eggleston: down on it, and double down on it some more.
- 17:42Tad Eggleston: And… and while there have been…
- 17:45Tad Eggleston: a number of Republicans that have actually managed to find
- 17:50Tad Eggleston: I don't know if I want to call it a spine, since I think that they're much more willing to denounce brown people anyway, and, you know, Vivek has never been their favorite Republican just because his name is Vivek.
- 18:08Tyler Johnson: I wonder if his last name is more of a problem.
- 18:11Tad Eggleston: Probably, but I want to give him as little attention as possible on this show right now, so I don't even feel like saying it.
- 18:21Tyler Johnson: All I know.
- 18:22Tad Eggleston: But of course, a fellow Ohioan, J.D. Vance, who spoke.
- 18:29Phil: Just be a…
- 18:30Tad Eggleston: party leader, rather than condemning the… Absolutely.
- 18:39Tad Eggleston: to… Based.
- 18:42Tad Eggleston: Like… We have seen some
- 18:45Tad Eggleston: Awful political ads in my lifetime.
- 18:48Tad Eggleston: And for that matter, we're seeing some other.
- 18:52Tad Eggleston: Awful political ads right now.
- 18:54Phil: Yep.
- 18:55Tad Eggleston: You know, I caught a couple of the ones getting run against Adam Hamilton in Kansas, and I'm sitting there going.
- 19:01Tad Eggleston: He's, you know, essentially, like, one member of his church that he had
- 19:08Tad Eggleston: some sort of interaction with, was arrested for pedophilia, and because he somehow didn't…
- 19:15Tad Eggleston: know about it, and wasn't the one that… that turned him into the police. He supports pedophilia.
- 19:24Phil: I was just about to say.
- 19:24Tad Eggleston: And I'm sitting there going.
- 19:27Phil: Let's, let's, let's not, you know, like…
- 19:31Tad Eggleston: And man…
- 19:31Phil: longest!
- 19:32Tad Eggleston: The man has a mega… the man has a megachurch.
- 19:38Phil: I mean, it's… it's more of a.
- 19:39Tad Eggleston: He's got a congregation of 40,000. And beyond that, you're a fucking Republican.
- 19:49Phil: It's about sex.
- 19:50Phil: That's the last party that gets to say anything about that.
- 19:53Tad Eggleston: What?
- 19:53Phil: Like, it's ridiculous.
- 19:54Tad Eggleston: You've had a Speaker of the House go to…
- 19:58Phil: Or kale for pets.
- 19:59Tad Eggleston: I feel ya. And O! And O!
- 20:03Tad Eggleston: Will you vote to… to release the Epstein files? If what we suspect is in them about your dear Commander-in-Chief, will you vote to impeach him? Shut the fuck up!
- 20:19Tad Eggleston: And even with that sort of thing, like, the ad that Vivek
- 20:25Tad Eggleston: Not only ran, but after it leaked, went ahead and took credit for, and doubled down on it, and spent $4 million in…
- 20:34Tad Eggleston: Spreading it.
- 20:38Tad Eggleston: I mean, seriously, the fact that it leaked was his way out.
- 20:44Phil: I bet.
- 20:45Tad Eggleston: I all but guarantee that it was leaked by a staff member that was hoping it would never get tied to the campaign.
- 20:55Tad Eggleston: Because that's… I mean, apparently, like, he's having campaign events get canceled by the venues.
- 21:03Phil: That's fantastic. Let's keep that trend going.
- 21:06Tad Eggleston: What's really fantastic is he's on a bus tour with other Ohio Republicans.
- 21:10Phil: That's an interesting bus, I bet.
- 21:15Tad Eggleston: Well, particularly because their events are getting canceled at the same time!
- 21:22Tad Eggleston: Wow! Anyway, we have a new catalog!
- 21:26Tyler Johnson: Usually.
- 21:26Tad Eggleston: orders are due November 26th.
- 21:30Tad Eggleston: Phil, talk to me… talk to me about Blue Samurai.
- 21:34Phil: Blue Eyes. Yeah, first up, that is…
- 21:37Phil: you know, spin-off from the hit, animated series on Netflix, Blue Eye Samurai Cry of the Yure number 1 from Kay Perkins and Aviv Orr over at Dark Horse, when both her gender and her mixed race are revealed to be
- 21:53Phil: To the samurai Daisuke, a cruel client of the Swordmaker, young Mizu is forced to confront her vulnerability. She escapes to the woods, but finds little safety there, fighting and fleeing as Daisuke pursues her. Lost and hunted, confused and ashamed, Mizu stumbles upon Sachiko, a wronged housemaid who sympathizes with Mizu's plight. Can both put aside their fears and suspicions long enough to help each other?
- 22:18Phil: Find out after the final order cutoff of December 14th, and in stores February 3rd.
- 22:25Phil: I'm excited for this next one.
- 22:27Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it looks really good. This is BPRD declassified from Mike Mignola and Mike Norton. The search for a missing aerospace engineer leads BPRD agent Susan Yang, and…
- 22:40Tyler Johnson: Victor Kossler on a top-secret mission to Honolulu, Hawaii.
- 22:46Tyler Johnson: Henry Roush was overseas working on a classified government project before he mysteriously vanished. The supernatural circumstances surrounding his disappearance means the BPRD
- 22:59Tyler Johnson: has been called in to investigate, but the agents soon discover that there's much more to be… to this missing person case than meets the eye. This is from Dark Horse, with a final order cutoff of January 11th, and will be in my store on February 17th.
- 23:17Phil: And real quick, also right in that is Chris Robertson.
- 23:21Tyler Johnson: Oh, did I forget that one? Yeah.
- 23:23Phil: Yeah, just wanted to, you know, make sure we credit him, too.
- 23:26Tad Eggleston: My fault. He's been doing it.
- 23:27Phil: Cowboy stuff for a while.
- 23:28Tad Eggleston: Sometimes it doesn't always make it into…
- 23:33Phil: Don't blame the cops.
- 23:33Tad Eggleston: Copy-past.
- 23:34Phil: Yeah.
- 23:35Tad Eggleston: Well, they don't put all of the names in the spreadsheet.
- 23:38Phil: Oh, okay.
- 23:40Tad Eggleston: And I don't always…
- 23:42Tad Eggleston: go back and do as good of a check as I should. I do want to point out, we know of Yvor. We've had him on.
- 23:50Phil: Yeah.
- 23:50Tad Eggleston: waves.
- 23:51Phil: Her?
- 23:53Tad Eggleston: No, Aviv was the gentleman, Aaron.
- 23:55Phil: Oh! I thought…
- 23:57Tad Eggleston: I thought, or is it…
- 23:58Phil: No, I thought… I thought Aviv was the artist.
- 24:01Phil: Oh, yeah. I believe so, yeah.
- 24:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 24:05Phil: Yeah, she was a great artist, and that's really exciting to see.
- 24:08Tad Eggleston: Mark.
- 24:08Phil: on BPRD.
- 24:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 24:11Tad Eggleston: So, no, on Blue Eye Samurai.
- 24:13Phil: Oh, Blue Eye Samurai, right, right, getting everything mixed up.
- 24:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, and I'm like, I recognize that name, so I literally had to go, like, search.
- 24:25Phil: Your back catalog.
- 24:27Tad Eggleston: I had to search the back catalog to go, oh, okay, yeah, I do know that name.
- 24:33Tad Eggleston: So, Dr. Sin, number 1, for Michael E. Uzlan and Sebastian… Cabral at Oney Press,
- 24:44Tad Eggleston: Some rebellions never die. Traitor. Rogue, Revenant, Rebel.
- 24:49Tad Eggleston: He's been known by many names, and now modern masters Michael Ozlan and Stephen S. Denite join riveting artist Sebastian Cabral to chronicle the fiery origin of the once-forgotten revolutionary who first watered Liberty's tree with the blood of tyrants.
- 25:05Tad Eggleston: Once…
- 25:06Tad Eggleston: The Reverend Dr. Christopher Sinn waged a guerrilla insurgency across 18th century England. Justice for the cruel deaths of his family at the hands of King George III and the rest of England's persecuted and oppressed.
- 25:18Tad Eggleston: Hidden behind a terrifying mask to keep his true identity concealed, Sin's rebellion soon became legend, inspiring copyright uprisings across the English countryside as the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh.
- 25:30Tad Eggleston: became a beacon of resistance against the nation's mad monarch. But that's where history's chronicle of the scarecrow's reign is about to go violently, terribly wrong.
- 25:40Tad Eggleston: Now, Dr. Sinn has been captured, tried and condemned for his crimes, forced into death by exile and the British Empire's most inhospitable outpost.
- 25:51Tad Eggleston: The American penal colony known as Georgia.
- 25:55Tad Eggleston: Sin has found himself imprisoned alongside a hardscrabble crew of the king's most notorious undesirables. With a mismatched team of allies fueled by the same burning vengeance for justice at his side, can England's most dangerous revolutionary.
- 26:08Tad Eggleston: Finally, bring the Empire down in an inferno of roaring flames. And could this backwater collection of pestilence-ridden colonies, called America, provide the spark?

- 27:03Tyler Johnson: As one does. But when the two get separated in the wilds of Oregon, X-Ray thinks all is lost, until she meets Coco, that is. Together, they'll go on an adventure that will see them crashing funerals, playing talent shows, fighting bullies, and above all…

- 27:37Tad Eggleston: Pan Cook.
- 27:38Tyler Johnson: Same a name.
- 27:40Tad Eggleston: Kids have made their voices heard throughout the Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter movements, and this absorbing introduction to that history, told through the fictional story of a young activist, will galvanize the next generation of changemakers. When a woman in town is shot by a police officer, Sage's social studies teacher decides to start a black history unit called Say Their Names.
- 28:01Tad Eggleston: He tells the class the stories of the Civil Rights Movement most
- 28:05Tad Eggleston: movement's most influential figures, and he tells the stories of various Black people who were killed by police, and the youth-led movements that emerge as a result. - 28:53Phil: Quickly growing more confident, V decides the best way to get his work out there is to enter a contest to become the official cartoonist for the school newspaper. How hard could it be?
- 29:02Phil: But he won't be the only one gunning for the job, and he's got a lot to learn about making comics. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of December 21st in stores January 26th.

He is rescued from destruction by Weedy, an eccentric scavenger obsessed with the remnants of the past and the search for meaning in their own existence. Soon after, Halou meets Fix, a practical, strong, and luminous young mechanic who awakens something deep within him.
- 29:58Phil: Together, in a world of ruins and dangers, they search for meaning, connection, and a reason to endure. Arcadia is a work of existential science fiction, profoundly human, where memory and love endure as a precious mystery that refuses to fade. - 30:59Tyler Johnson: People are a threat. His journey back to life and his friend's dire search against a looming deadline is as strange and tense as any concrete story ever told. This will be, final order cut off December 7th in shops March 16th.
- 31:15Tyler Johnson: You guys, I am reading this in issues, and it has been really good, so definitely check out this, version of it.

- 32:25Tyler Johnson: Did you say Park Quad?
- 32:27Tad Eggleston: Or car.
- 32:28Tad Eggleston: Only now, Farklar has returned, and his army of hideous Mordarchs are about to devour Des Moines. Now, the savages are piled in Mom's minivan, headed to Iowa to wage war against black magic Armageddon.
- 32:42Tad Eggleston: Jordan is freaking out. Winter thinks it's all pretty cool, and no one is sure if mom and dad can get along
- 32:52Tad Eggleston: Long enough to save civilization from destruction.

- 37:43Phil: Artist?
- 37:44Tad Eggleston: artist, generally, and does them in black and white, and they're beautiful, and I love them. EC, er, not EC, Dark Horse collects them by title.
- 37:55Phil: Mmm.
- 37:59Tad Eggleston: in retouched color, which some people are not happy about, but I…
- 38:05Tad Eggleston: I… I go back and forth. I don't know if I truly believe that the faded color that's what you can get if you don't recolor it is what was intended.
- 38:18Phil: We'll need a time machine to figure that out.
- 38:19Tad Eggleston: Right. So, so yeah, the EC Archives from Dark Horse are collections of the issues, so you get to see them as they were…
- 38:29Tad Eggleston: Originally.
- 38:29Phil: That's really interesting.

- 39:21Tad Eggleston: So, anyway… I didn't…
- 39:25Tyler Johnson: Bloom.
- 39:25Tad Eggleston: syncbook.
- 39:27Tyler Johnson: You did a lot of amazing books.
- 39:29Tad Eggleston: 3 of them.
- 39:30Tyler Johnson: Tad?
- 39:30Tad Eggleston: Was… was not possible this week.
- 39:33Tyler Johnson: Tad, 9 is okay, but 10 is too many.
- 39:39Tyler Johnson: You have a tenth one for honorable mentions, is all.
- 39:43Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, I have lots of honorable mentions, and some of them, shocked didn't make the…
- 39:52Phil: Do you…
- 39:53Tad Eggleston: But I actually have 10 books. I actually have 10 books in the top 9, because…
- 39:58Phil: Oh, snap!
- 40:00Tyler Johnson: I'm king.
- 40:00Tad Eggleston: Only got one spot on the,
- 40:03Tad Eggleston: on the list, even though he wrote two amazing books this week. Six of Us, number two, just… anybody not reading Six of Us, this is just… it's like a murder mystery about…
- 40:16Tad Eggleston: like… a friends-type cast.
- 40:21Tad Eggleston: 10 years after the show.
- 40:24Tyler Johnson: Ended.
- 40:25Tad Eggleston: And did… er…
- 40:27Tyler Johnson: That's cool.
- 40:27Tad Eggleston: number of years after the show ended. So good. So good.
- 40:33Tad Eggleston: Also, it was a great week for graphic novels this week, which is why, like…
- 40:40Tad Eggleston: I had to go long, because number 2 is gonna be Nate Powell's Diana. A little bit of time traveling, little bit of…
- 40:49Tad Eggleston: timey-wimey shit, but also ties together, come together, and fall through.
- 40:55Tyler Johnson: me, whimy.
- 40:56Tad Eggleston: just…
- 40:57Tyler Johnson: Wow.
- 40:57Tad Eggleston: just an amazing book. You can listen to the conversation that Dan and I had with Nate Powell, already.
- 41:06Tad Eggleston: Dracula Book 3, The Count from Matt Wagner and Kelly Jones. This is the one that, like, most directly relates to the novel. Like, what they've been doing with these four books are… are essentially telling…
- 41:20Tad Eggleston: Everything that's hinted at, and…
- 41:23Phil: And…
- 41:23Tad Eggleston: And from the Count's point of view, from Dracula's
- 41:28Tad Eggleston: point of view, whereas the novel is epistolary, so…
- 41:32Tad Eggleston: It's… it's a series of letters, etc. Newspaper articles… Documents.
- 41:39Phil: That sort of thing.
- 41:39Tad Eggleston: What they're doing is, like, taking some of history and mostly from the book, and that's, you know, so the first two volumes are mostly things that were alluded to
- 41:53Tad Eggleston: in the book, and the count is… is when Dracula's getting to London.
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: I mean, some of the brides were, you know, he had the solicitor come out to meet him.
- 42:06Tad Eggleston: to arrange for the trip of London, but this is… the count is that Dracula getting to London and starting his…
- 42:13Phil: It also makes me wonder how you would do an epistolary graphic novel.
- 42:17Phil: That is subtly interesting to me.
- 42:21Tad Eggleston: Well, go read letters to Joe.
- 42:23Phil: Oh, okay, yeah, there we go.
- 42:26Phil: I'll write that down.
- 42:26Tad Eggleston: Siraki, Joe Siraki, and and, Kelly Williams. Okay.
- 42:37Tad Eggleston: It's been a while since I read it, so I don't know… I know that it's based on letters that Joe's grandfather wrote his grandmother.
- 42:47Tad Eggleston: from World War II. I forget exactly how epistolary they… they went with…
- 42:54Tad Eggleston: the book itself, because it's been a while since I read it.
- 42:57Tad Eggleston: But that's what immediately pops into my head, because I know it was derived from actual letters.
- 43:06Phil: Very interesting.
- 43:07Tad Eggleston: The Forever Home, number 2 from Christian Ward and Sammy Cavello was amazing, as was Forged, number 14, from Greg… Greg Rucka, Eric Troutman, and Mike Henderson. The Last Drive, number 3, this book is so… Tyler, are you reading The Last Drive?
- 43:23Tyler Johnson: Yeah, driver, the last driver, you mean?
- 43:25Tad Eggleston: Last driver, yeah.
- 43:26Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Yep.
- 43:27Tad Eggleston: Fuck, man!
- 43:29Tyler Johnson: It's crazy.
- 43:29Tad Eggleston: Good. I hate that it's number 6 this week, and that's why I had to go 9, because you know I can't just go 6.
- 43:38Tyler Johnson: You can, you just have a… have a, no, I can't.
- 43:41Tad Eggleston: No.
- 43:42Tyler Johnson: Oh, I guess.
- 43:43Phil: There's no sh…
- 43:44Tad Eggleston: This is in baseball.
- 43:47Tad Eggleston: 27…
- 43:49Tyler Johnson: Tad, when people… when people describe you, do they describe you as quirky? I mean, how… how do they put this into… I'm just cheating.
- 44:00Tad Eggleston: Is that shit crazy?
- 44:01Tyler Johnson: I agree.
- 44:01Tad Eggleston: Die Loaded, number 10 from Kieran Gillen, Stephanie Hans at Image, Dork, number 9 from Brett Bean at Image, and again, like, coming in at number 9, a book that I loved so much, Yumi WX, number 3 from Doug Wagner and Hoyt.
- 44:20Tyler Johnson: It was good. It was good.
- 44:21Tad Eggleston: Not even making my list was dog tag number 6, and a life number 9, iCollector number 5, Destruction Beer a lot number 5. Didn't even manage to read it, demands sacrifice number 1 this week.
- 44:33Tyler Johnson: It's good. It's good.
- 44:35Tad Eggleston: I, I've heard!
- 44:36Tyler Johnson: I mean…
- 44:38Tad Eggleston: So, it was a ridiculously good week in comics, and I, and I see that,
- 44:44Tad Eggleston: I mentioned all 3 of Tyler's, though.
- 44:46Tyler Johnson: I know! Dork, you guys.
- 44:48Tad Eggleston: Didn't even quite make my top 9.
- 44:51Tyler Johnson: Okay, Dork is my favorite series going on right now, by far.
- 44:56Tad Eggleston: So good.
- 44:56Tyler Johnson: Brett Bean, I mean, like, he's my new favorite guy. And then end of life, you guys, Kyle Starks.
- 45:03Tyler Johnson: If his writing's just on its own, it's… I mean, it's strong when he does the art, too, but the writing in End of Life is so good. And then Steve Pugh is killing it on the artwork.
- 45:16Tyler Johnson: Forever Home number 2, Christian Ward. This was a, you know, it was a number 3, but it, it barely was a number 3. There, I, I, I almost picked, like I said, Demand Sacrifice number 1, or It Demands Sacrifice, but…
- 45:34Tyler Johnson: But… Forever Home number 1 was really good, so I had to go with number 2 and see where it's gone.
- 45:41Tyler Johnson: Alright, a walk with Phil.
- 45:43Phil: Yep, yep, I'm walking here. Yeah, unfortunately, I mean, I did get to the store, but, didn't have a chance to read it, because I got there late, right before driving, up to Louisville and Cincinnati, you know? So even though I do… I am excited to read, Diloaded, number 9 and 10, because that's… I haven't… I haven't been there for a minute now.
- 46:02Phil: You know, which I'm surprised that it made Tad's, amazing list. That's fantastic. That's… that's even more exciting. And then, Volume 6 of Goodnight Pun Pun is also coming at the library for me, so I should… I… there's a decent chance I'll read the rest of this series by next week.
- 46:18Tyler Johnson: That's a great name.
- 46:20Phil: Yeah, yeah, it's… have you read, Punk Pun at all?
- 46:23Tyler Johnson: No. Nope. It's good.
- 46:24Tad Eggleston: You should've got it.
- 46:25Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 46:26Phil: I think you would. It's weird, there's stuff in it,
- 46:30Phil: They, you know, there's a Porn Watchers Club,
- 46:33Tyler Johnson: While we're on the podcast, I am thumbing through this beauty. Have you guys seen this before?
- 46:37Phil: I have not.
- 46:39Tyler Johnson: Preach comics.
- 46:40Phil: Okay.
- 46:41Phil: It's really… I mean, Based on the cover. But no, but we did…
- 46:45Phil: It was, like, Jaws jumping up, saying something funny.
- 46:49Phil: Anyway, but, no, we got our apartment in Cincinnati, and I'm pretty sure it's locked in, because we put down the deposit, if not last night, then this morning. So, yeah. Yeah, it's a whole new era. You know…
- 47:03Phil: Tad was also becalmed.
- 47:05Phil: On one piece.
- 47:06Tad Eggleston: I was.
- 47:07Phil: I was also the calm.
- 47:08Tad Eggleston: pumped.
- 47:08Tyler Johnson: I like that that's the term we're using.
- 47:11Phil: It is, yeah. Well, because it's… the one-piece race has to be on water, you know, it doesn't make sense for it to be a land race for pirates.
- 47:18Tyler Johnson: Nope, nope.
- 47:20Phil: Which takes us right to Great Responsibility and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. A little book… have you guys heard of this before? Are you guys familiar with this title?
- 47:28Tyler Johnson: So, Patrick Horvath just, took me by surprise with that first… first run of Beneath the Trees.
- 47:37Tyler Johnson: the artwork was so sublime and so calm, and then all of a sudden, you are realizing you are reading a serial killer story. And, I mean, you probably knew that going into it, but when it starts to take shape.
- 47:51Tyler Johnson: you know, Sam is so, like, nonchalant, do you know what I mean? She's not scary and aggressive, she's just this calm hardware lady.
- 48:02Phil: Yeah.
- 48:02Tyler Johnson: And… it's… it's creepy as hell. I mean, like, Extra level, you know?
- 48:09Phil: I'd say creepier than Dexter, honestly. I mean…
- 48:12Phil: The… yeah. Yeah. I… it's… it's also funny, because as I… I flipped through all of the, like, alternate covers that were, like, you know, parodies of… of kids' books and whatnot, and, it was… it was… while it was interesting seeing Samantha drawn by other artists, I feel like nobody draws her like Patrick. Like…
- 48:32Tyler Johnson: No, no, because his drawing of her is so… Yeah. Like, I don't know what the word is, it's so calming.
- 48:39Phil: Yeah.
- 48:40Tyler Johnson: book is. I mean, from the characters, like the little duck character.
- 48:43Phil: Mr.
- 48:44Tyler Johnson: You're like, this should be a children's book, really. But then you realize…
- 48:49Tyler Johnson: But then you realize that, oh no, this poor kid is looking for his dead dad that she killed.
- 48:54Phil: Yeah.
- 48:57Tyler Johnson: And then we…
- 48:57Phil: Savage.
- 48:58Tyler Johnson: It's great. Then we go into beneath the trees where nobody sees, the rites of spring.
- 49:06Tyler Johnson: And… what'd you think of that? Like, kind of the…
- 49:09Phil: Oh my gosh.
- 49:09Tyler Johnson: Follow-up story of what happened.
- 49:11Phil: So, okay, so here's… I had a little mix-up on… on Hoopla, where, they… I saw that, they had the Halloween special.
- 49:21Phil: And then they have…
- 49:22Tad Eggleston: Special's great, too.
- 49:22Phil: And then they had the Rite of Spring.
- 49:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 49:25Phil: oh no, they don't have the first one anymore, so I just started with Rite of Spring.
- 49:30Tyler Johnson: Whoa.
- 49:31Phil: And yeah, so I jumped… which was actually really great. Was it? Well, it let me connect with, the… the duck character in the first issue, where she's looking for her brother and doesn't know what's going on.
- 49:44Phil: And I mean, I knew about the premise of the series, from how much you guys had talked about it, and it was one… so here's why I hadn't read it until now, is because a lot of times when I see a book that's like, that looks perfectly designed for my tastes.
- 49:58Phil: I will prolong
- 50:01Phil: reading it, because I know that I'm going to like it, so it's like delayed gratification kind of thing. Sure. So even though I started with Rite of Spring, I am super excited to go back and read Volume 1 and figure out all the details of what was happening, because Rite of Spring, like, oh my…
- 50:15Tyler Johnson: It's kind of like watching Star Wars, starting at New Hope, and then going back and having to watch the, the prequels.
- 50:22Phil: A little bit, well, because even…
- 50:23Tad Eggleston: Best order for Star Wars. Let's just be clear.
- 50:27Phil: Yeah.
- 50:28Tad Eggleston: New Hope, Empire Strikes Back.
- 50:31Tad Eggleston: prequels, Return of the Jedi, because…
- 50:34Phil: See that?
- 50:34Tad Eggleston: You… if you watch the prequels…
- 50:37Tad Eggleston: before you watch Empire Strikes Back.
- 50:41Tad Eggleston: That's spoil. He steals from the…
- 50:43Tad Eggleston: the power of Luke, I am your father.
- 50:47Tyler Johnson: Yup, yup.
- 50:49Phil: Okay, I can see that.
- 50:50Tyler Johnson: True. It does ruin it.
- 50:51Phil: I think that would actually make the prequels better, putting them between Empire and Jedi. It's been a while since I've considered Star Wars takes, but I like that one.
- 50:59Tad Eggleston: really completely redeem… Well, any of them, but certainly not,
- 51:05Phil: Revenge of the Sith?
- 51:07Tad Eggleston: us.
- 51:08Phil: Oh…
- 51:08Tyler Johnson: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Phantom Menace was way worse than Revenge of the Sith.
- 51:13Phil: I don't…
- 51:14Tad Eggleston: I said…
- 51:14Phil: It's hard.
- 51:15Tyler Johnson: You're talking about Phil? I don't…
- 51:17Phil: It's hard for me to… so, okay, so, like, quick tangent. It's hard for me to compare, because I saw them… they came out when I was a child, and my, you know, sense of taste was still developing.
- 51:28Tyler Johnson: Dr.
- 51:28Phil: But Revenge of the Sith was probably one of the biggest disappointments for me. Like, I remember seeing it in 8th grade and thinking, wow, this is not good. This is not a good movie. This is bad. This is terrible. Because, by contrast.
- 51:41Phil: I'd been watching the Lord of the Rings films that, you know, kind of solidified, like, wow, this is a… this is quality, this is good, this is good story.
- 51:49Tyler Johnson: That's what storytelling should be, yep.
- 51:51Phil: Yes, exactly, and then having, you know, because I'm pretty sure Return of the King and Revenge of the Sith came out, if not the same year, really close to each other, and so…
- 52:00Tyler Johnson: I think so.
- 52:00Phil: seeing the wrap-ups, the two trilogies, and then the Matrix trilogy, I think, was around then, too, so, like, I was starting to develop a critical eye, and, no, I… admittedly, Revenge of the Sith is my favorite Star Wars movie to laugh at. I love.
- 52:14Tyler Johnson: Mmm.
- 52:14Phil: being able to say you were the chosen one, you were supposed to save us, in comedic contexts.
- 52:19Phil: You're right back!
- 52:20Tyler Johnson: I was just saying that?
- 52:21Phil: I was supposed to save us! Yeah, it's great. But, no, I mean…
- 52:27Phil: The other thing is that what kind of makes me feel comfortable in justifying saying, hey, if you want to read this series out of order like I did, it still works, is because the Rite of Spring has nonlinear storytelling elements, where the first and second issues take place over basically the same amount of time, I would assume.
- 52:44Phil: they end on the same note, and then we get the flashback to seeing Samantha with her parents, and I assume that was her first kill.
- 52:53Phil: You know, which was traumatic as hell. I loved that. That was so…
- 52:58Tyler Johnson: creepy.
- 52:59Phil: Yeah, it was so surprising.
- 53:02Phil: I guess the weird thing is, is, like, while I'm reading it, I know that it's factually, like, creepy and disturbing, but, like, I'm such a sicko that I was just thrilled by it, I guess.
- 53:12Tyler Johnson: Oh, I get it, you're just like, wow.
- 53:15Phil: Yeah! This is… Yeah.
- 53:16Tyler Johnson: And then, what'd you think of the Halloween special, where kind of kids were, like, talking about… I didn't get to read that one yet. Oh, okay.
- 53:23Phil: I mean, you guys can talk about it, feel free.
- 53:25Tyler Johnson: So, the premise is… the premise is, is that, you know, the events of Samantha's killing spree are in the past, and now these children are telling horror stories about what they've heard about Samantha.
- 53:38Phil: Sounds awesome.
- 53:39Tyler Johnson: You know what I mean? So, it's really fun.
- 53:41Phil: That does sound super fun, super exciting. But I mean, even in Rite of Spring, the other moment to me that was great is when the bear, the non-anthropomorphized, like, fully wild.
- 53:53Tyler Johnson: The real beer, yeah.
- 53:54Phil: Yeah. Like, it was so funny, because I was thinking when… I think someone mentioned… I… I… it was one of those things I was flipping through, and I was like, I think I remember hearing you guys say that there's a real dog. And then I'm like, that's so weird. If this was a comedy series, it would be really funny to have, like, a tiny human, you know, instead of animals.
- 54:12Tad Eggleston: See, you didn't… you didn't read…
- 54:15Tad Eggleston: Volume 1, so you missed… there's literally…
- 54:19Tad Eggleston: a pig… Shopping at a butcher shop.
- 54:24Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 54:26Tad Eggleston: Oh. Pig.
- 54:27Tad Eggleston: In the window.
- 54:28Phil: Yep, that sounds… that sounds great, yeah.
- 54:31Tyler Johnson: The amount of, you know, like, the meta…
- 54:34Phil: and that's the crazy thing of… a bear shows up in town, and everyone is terrified of it. And, like, for Samantha.
- 54:42Phil: to… to watch them deal with the bear, and then quietly walk away from the crowd, it… it… that was a really great scene, too, where I'm like, holy shit, you know, just the parallels between,
- 54:56Phil: you know, it's almost like, what do other people see? Like, that's one of the things that's great about it, is that, like.
- 55:03Phil: I think in the first issue, one of the close-ups of, like, a duckbill with a cigarette hanging out of it, I was like.
- 55:08Tyler Johnson: I agree.
- 55:08Phil: love this.
- 55:10Tyler Johnson: Because it's legal.
- 55:10Phil: leaning so hard into the anthropomorphized, like, animal people, but then it also very clearly is taking place in the real world.
- 55:18Tad Eggleston: Does…
- 55:19Tyler Johnson: Doesn't it feel like… Go ahead, Ted.
- 55:22Tad Eggleston: I was gonna say, again, like…
- 55:24Tad Eggleston: the most shocking moment for me, and I think Tyler… Tyler was there with me when it was originally coming out, is, like, that first issue, you know, it's so anthropomorphized, and yeah, you know, there's lots of real-world feel to it and whatnot, but, like, when she actually…
- 55:43Tad Eggleston: Cuts up the body.
- 55:45Tad Eggleston: And, like, you see… the… the… the… The brains? Ducks… duck in, like, small pieces.
- 55:54Phil: Yeah!
- 55:56Phil: It's like…
- 55:58Tad Eggleston: Oh, he's going there. Yeah.
- 56:01Tyler Johnson: I remember, I don't know, Tad, maybe we're too old, but I remember my siblings watching it, the Busy World of Richard Scary.
- 56:09Tyler Johnson: This, this, artwork reminds me of that children's.
- 56:15Tad Eggleston: He's the serial killer in the busy world of Richard Scary.
- 56:18Tyler Johnson: the air.
- 56:19Tad Eggleston: Dustin Bears, take your pick.
- 56:21Tyler Johnson: Berenstein Bears, old-school Winnie the Pooh, like, the stuff that was really drawn, right, by Milne. You know.
- 56:28Phil: That was probably my favorite parody cover, was the Winnie the Pooh one.
- 56:31Tyler Johnson: To be honest.
- 56:31Phil: Yeah.
- 56:33Phil: Oh.
- 56:34Tad Eggleston: Drop, drop, drop a serial killer into any of those worlds, and this… This is what you get.
- 56:41Phil: I'm especially excited for where Rite of Spring ends, because it's like, okay, this is not over.
- 56:47Tyler Johnson: Oh, no.
- 56:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, more volume.
- 56:49Phil: at least… I was gonna say at least one more volume, because I don't know how long…
- 56:51Tad Eggleston: It's been announced. It's been announced.
- 56:54Phil: I will…
- 56:55Tad Eggleston: volume. The implication is that that's the end.
- 56:58Phil: Okay.
- 56:59Tad Eggleston: We'll see.
- 56:59Phil: Honestly, I really hope they put out, like, all the series collected in a hardcover, because I would buy the hell out of that.
- 57:07Tyler Johnson: They might… that would be cool, I'd buy that.
- 57:09Tad Eggleston: The reason… it's the only reason I haven't bought the hardcover for… for the first volume yet, is that, like…
- 57:17Tad Eggleston: I think there may be a better option.
- 57:19Phil: that's kind of… it was one of those where I was like, oh, maybe I'll pick up the issues, you know, I'm like, no, I'll probably end up reading on Hoopla, because I'm the type of weirdo who, like, if I start reading a series in issues, I want it all in issues, so this might be… this might be my full evolution into Trade Waiter of reading it from the library in issues, and then picking up the giant hardcover
- 57:41Phil: All in one book, because those are my favorite, favorite books.
- 57:44Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 57:45Phil: For comics.
- 57:46Tyler Johnson: Agreed.
- 57:46Phil: This is… honestly, the other thing, I feel like one of the real tests of this one is after I read Volume 1, I mean…
- 57:55Phil: I'm really tempted to give this to my mom.
- 57:58Tyler Johnson: Oh, really?
- 57:59Phil: Yes, here's the thing, though.
- 58:01Phil: is, like, cause she… I gave it to me.
- 58:03Tad Eggleston: My wife.
- 58:04Phil: Yeah, I know my wife would love this. I'm pretty sure she would be blown away, like, which actually…
- 58:09Tad Eggleston: This is literally one of… and thank God I'd had Patrick on, and we got to know each other a little bit more at C2E2, because it was one of the first books that my wife ever read as issues came out, and I remember she got to, like, issue 4 or 5, and she's like, what the fuck do you mean I need to wait for a month?
- 58:27Phil: That's fantastic.
- 58:30Tad Eggleston: And I sent an email, and she didn't have to wait.
- 58:33Phil: Nice, okay.
- 58:34Tyler Johnson: There's a PDF. A PDF arrives very quickly. Right. Right. Hey.
- 58:39Phil: That's a good marriage, when you can say, what the fuck do you mean I have to wait? And then she.
- 58:43Tyler Johnson: And then you're like, oh, hold on, dear, let me.
- 58:46Phil: Me too, right?
- 58:47Phil: I might have some connections that could.
- 58:49Tyler Johnson: Let me talk to Patrick.
- 58:51Phil: Oh my gosh, yeah. Nope, but speaking of, speaking of my wife would love this, is that actually, we… now that she's out of school, we actually just started about, possibly making a comic together, and she was really interested in, like, something that goes from
- 59:07Phil: cutesy to spooky to disturbing, so I'll have her read this for inspiration, for sure.
- 59:12Tad Eggleston: You should have her… you should have her read some,
- 59:15Tyler Johnson: Gays? I…
- 59:17Tad Eggleston: Farrell. That's what I was about to say. Tyler needs to get going.
- 59:21Tyler Johnson: Oh, not only that, but, like, Phil, I have finished, my script for my first comic. Oh, very cool. I'm editing right now, and then I'm gonna send it to Tad and you if you want to read it. Oh, cool. Give me any pointers on pace…
- 59:34Tad Eggleston: shreds. Yeah.
- 59:36Tyler Johnson: Yeah, please do, because…
- 59:37Tad Eggleston: I'll warn you on air, Tyler, the more I rip it to shreds, the more I like it.
- 59:42Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 59:43Tad Eggleston: I know that seems counterintuitive.
- 59:46Tyler Johnson: Well, let me give you the beats… let me give you the beats of it and see what you guys think, quick.
- 59:51Phil: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, are you sure you want this going out?
- 59:53Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, no, don't do that on the air.
- 59:55Tyler Johnson: Alright, alright, alright, alright.
- 59:57Phil: I know you're excited. It's good you're excited.
- 1:00:00Tad Eggleston: We'll get to read it.
- 1:00:01Tyler Johnson: But it's a one… it's a one-shot, it's not an ongoing… it's not an ongoing idea.
- 1:00:05Phil: Okay.
- 1:00:05Tad Eggleston: Because I do sometimes have that issue when I'm in, like, writing groups, or…
- 1:00:10Tad Eggleston: or creative writing classes, that people will read the stuff that I write about their
- 1:00:16Tad Eggleston: their work, or the stuff I write in the margins, or whatnot, and think that I'm mean and I hate them. And I'm sitting there going, no, no, no, no. If I hate the work, it'll just say, nice job.
- 1:00:27Phil: Right? Because you have nothing to say.
- 1:00:29Tad Eggleston: Nothing else.
- 1:00:31Tyler Johnson: You don't wanna… you don't even wanna read it.
- 1:00:33Phil: Yeah.
- 1:00:33Tad Eggleston: If I like it, if I like it, I'm, like, pointing out everything. And also, notice that I'm always asking questions. I'm not.
- 1:00:42Phil: Questions are good.
- 1:00:43Tad Eggleston: change this. I'm saying… Think about this. Think about that.
- 1:00:50Phil: I… I… I've taken a lot of creative writing… or I took a lot of creative writing classes in college. I can have a heavy hand. My… I'm telling you right now, my goal will be to not take over the project, but to try to see what you're trying to do with it and elevate that.
- 1:01:06Tad Eggleston: I have that goal, it doesn't always come off that way.
- 1:01:10Phil: Yeah. So, so yeah, so you have, you have a couple of harsh critics, but, but, that, that mean well.
- 1:01:16Tad Eggleston: Better!
- 1:01:17Tyler Johnson: That's great.
- 1:01:18Tad Eggleston: At least know that.
- 1:01:19Tyler Johnson: I can't do that.
- 1:01:21Tyler Johnson: Not that I'm expecting that this will be anything amazing, but you do have access to all kinds of different artists, too, that might be… that might want to pick this up, because I do not have time to draw a comic book.
- 1:01:33Tad Eggleston: You're not gonna draw it yourself?
- 1:01:35Tyler Johnson: I have, and my wife said the same thing. I have no time to do that.
- 1:01:39Phil: That's fair.
- 1:01:40Tyler Johnson: I can write in, you know, when I've got short little minutes of whatever in between stuff, but as far as, like, you know, sitting down and actually…
- 1:01:48Tad Eggleston: Definitely something that we'll have to talk about more off the air, because… because…
- 1:01:53Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:01:53Tad Eggleston: Like, most artists don't have time to do stuff unless they're getting paid.
- 1:01:58Tyler Johnson: Exactly. Yep, exactly, and I'm willing to do that, because I, and I'll tell you, I would know who I'd really want to do it, so…
- 1:02:09Phil: Nice.
- 1:02:10Tyler Johnson: But that's true.
- 1:02:11Tad Eggleston: But it's totally off-air, and if we want to.
- 1:02:13Tyler Johnson: be able to do.
- 1:02:13Tad Eggleston: anything off-air before you have to run, we should…
- 1:02:16Tyler Johnson: Oh, no.
- 1:02:17Tad Eggleston: Nope.
- 1:02:18Tyler Johnson: I'll have to talk to you guys about that later. We'll do the show, and then I gotta go.
- 1:02:22Phil: Yep.
- 1:02:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:23Phil: Next week.
- 1:02:23Phil: Put a pin in it.
- 1:02:25Tad Eggleston: I can say right now that I know that Archie No. 2 from Ben H. Winters and Fabio Moon.
- 1:02:32Tyler Johnson: It's good.
- 1:02:32Tad Eggleston: Spectacular.
- 1:02:34Tyler Johnson: Well, one is good. I haven't read 2.
- 1:02:36Tad Eggleston: I've read two as well, and it's really good.
- 1:02:39Phil: Hard to imagine bad comics from Fabio Moon.
- 1:02:42Tyler Johnson: I know.
- 1:02:42Tad Eggleston: That's… that's true.
- 1:02:43Phil: It just can't.
- 1:02:45Tad Eggleston: I'm actually going to propose… Next week's…
- 1:02:52Phil: Great responsibility.
- 1:02:54Tad Eggleston: Yes, those are the words I was looking for.
- 1:02:57Tad Eggleston: Based on a collection coming out this week that's also timely for Halloween, and will be recording on November 1st, so we can count that as Halloween. Yeah. And Tyler's already held up his copy, because Afterlife with Archie comes out this week.
- 1:03:11Phil: Oh, that's okay.
- 1:03:11Tad Eggleston: and… Comics… er, Global Comics.
- 1:03:16Tad Eggleston: 10 issues. I think Tyler and I read the first 5 a long time ago, but I think it'd be worth reading all 10.
- 1:03:23Phil: Okay, yeah.
- 1:03:23Tad Eggleston: Afterlife with Archie for next week.
- 1:03:26Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 1:03:27Tyler Johnson: So, I picked that up.
- 1:03:28Tad Eggleston: And I just came
- 1:03:29Tad Eggleston: Great, great place, because not next week, but I think the week after that is when…
- 1:03:38Tad Eggleston: tying everything back together now, Patrick Korvath, and… and, tyler Crooks…
- 1:03:47Tad Eggleston: Aww.
- 1:03:48Tad Eggleston: Archie in Hell launches.
- 1:03:50Phil: Very interesting, okay.
- 1:03:52Tad Eggleston: So… so yeah, we'll get our Archie Halloween fix going.
- 1:03:57Tad Eggleston: But anyway, the other three books that I am excited for, and you can tell how many great books there were that I had to read this week, because there are a lot of weeks where all 3 of these would be in the books I know are spectacular. I have reader copies of.
- 1:04:14Tad Eggleston: all three of these books, and fully expect them to be spectacular. That Texas Blood, Hell Comes to Allison Ranch, number 2, from Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips. Fort Psycho, number 3 from Matt Kent and Brian Hurt. And Crimes Against Nature, number 2 from Elliot Rahal, and Mattia
- 1:04:32Tad Eggleston: Monaco. Those are from Image, ONI, and Image, respectively.
- 1:04:39Tad Eggleston: Also worth pointing out is we have the collection of The Peril of the Brutal Dark, an Ezra Kane mystery from Condon and Phillips at DC Vertigo, and
- 1:04:51Tad Eggleston: You Have Killed Me from Joel Jones and Jamie S. Rich.
- 1:04:55Tad Eggleston: Which are… they're just… they… they do such amazing work together.
- 1:04:59Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:00Tad Eggleston: from Pony Press.
- 1:05:01Tad Eggleston: Graphic novel coming out next week.
- 1:05:04Tad Eggleston: fill.
- 1:05:07Tad Eggleston: Your trade waiter pick.
- 1:05:08Phil: It is in the run-up to Halloween, you should absolutely pick up In Your Skin from Siege of Biddikar and Som over at Image Comics.
- 1:05:17Tyler Johnson: agreed.
- 1:05:17Phil: Yeah, I… a close second, I almost picked… I almost picked The Peril of the Brutal Dark, that was a close one, because that looks really interesting, too.
- 1:05:26Tyler Johnson: good. Anything… Vertigo is putting out such good stuff, so you could have picked that, and it would have been great, the Ezra Kane Mystery.
- 1:05:34Tad Eggleston: They are absolutely living up to…
- 1:05:38Phil: criminal.
- 1:05:39Tad Eggleston: The Vertigo.
- 1:05:41Tyler Johnson: the vertigo, like.
- 1:05:42Tad Eggleston: to go labels.
- 1:05:42Tyler Johnson: type.
- 1:05:43Phil: I just said criminal because it's Jacob Phillips, and… No, I get it. And, like, there's a detective.
- 1:05:49Tad Eggleston: But I've actually been on record a few times already in saying that as much as I like Brubaker, Philip.
- 1:05:56Tad Eggleston: I think I like Condon Phillips better.
- 1:05:57Phil: Okay, I'll have to give him a shot then.
- 1:06:00Phil: That's a high bar.
- 1:06:01Tad Eggleston: I think… I think I like Cotton Phillips better.
- 1:06:04Phil: Alright.
- 1:06:06Tyler Johnson: Well, guys, I'm gonna take us out, my family's ready to go out the door.
- 1:06:11Tad Eggleston: Staring at you, going.
- 1:06:12Tyler Johnson: They are not, they're putting their shoes on.
- 1:06:15Phil: Okay, they're gonna leave it behind.
- 1:06:16Tad Eggleston: It would have been way more, way more fun if they were already in their shoes and jackets and just staring at you, Peggy tapping her watch, Raina tapping her foot.
- 1:06:27Tyler Johnson: So, no, here's Raina. You can see she's in her cute sweater. She's gonna sing for church today.
- 1:06:34Tyler Johnson: So…
- 1:06:35Tad Eggleston: Yay!
- 1:06:36Tyler Johnson: Yay!
- 1:06:36Phil: Congratulations!
- 1:06:39Phil: Oh, that's sweet.
- 1:06:40Tyler Johnson: So, anyway, guys, I got a hug. Anyway, guys, thank you for listening, and we will catch you guys after the next page.
- 1:06:49Tyler Johnson: See ya!
