- 0:04Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:07Epstein Chronicles. There's no story that includes Jeffrey Epstein that
- 0:13can avoid the fact that he was embedded in academia.
- 0:18And after all these years, the bill is finally coming due,
- 0:22and people like Larry Summers and Leon Botstein are finally
- 0:26being called upon to answer for their relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
- 0:31And as you can imagine, their answers have not been great.
- 0:35And of course it's led to Larry Summers being shit
- 0:37canned at Harvard. And now Botstein is stepping down from
- 0:41his president's position. Now, of course he's not leaving Bard entirely,
- 0:47but he's stepping down from that position. And now we
- 0:51have Jamie Raskin, who is looking for a comprehensive accounting
- 0:56and he wants to have an interview with mister Botstein.
- 0:59And look, just be clear, I'm not saying that mister
- 1:02Botstein was taking part in any kind of abuse. I
- 1:05don't know that, but I do know that he enabled
- 1:07Jeffrey Epstein. I know that he helped refurbish Jeffrey Epstein's image,
- 1:12and I know that led to other people being abused.
- 1:15And if this was a Rico case well might be
- 1:17a different conversation. But considering that's just a hope and
- 1:21a dream, we have to deal with the reality before us.
- 1:24And when it comes to people like Botstein, people like Summers.
- 1:28The most we can hope for probably his embarrassment, and honestly,
- 1:33that's a drop in the pill compared to the suffering
- 1:35of Jeffrey Epstein's victims and survivors. So look, I get
- 1:41it right, nobody wants to demean somebody. I'm not going
- 1:45to sit here and call somebody a diddler if we
- 1:47have no proof of it. But at the same time,
- 1:51you have to answer for your relationships. You're a grown
- 1:54ass man. You can't have relationships with people like Jeffrey
- 1:57Epstein when he's a known child abuser and then think
- 2:00that it's going to be okay, that nobody's going to
- 2:03have anything to say about it, Because I assure you
- 2:07people have some shit to say, so do why. Today's
- 2:11article is from The Guardian and the headline Harvard and
- 2:14Bard face fresh questions from lawmakers overties to Epstein. This
- 2:19article was authored by Stephanie Kirch Gasner. Harvard University and
- 2:26Bard College are facing new questions about the institution's relationship
- 2:30with Jeffrey Epstein amid allegations at the convicted child sex
- 2:33trafficker leveraged his ties to the universities and their faculty
- 2:37to traffic women while also burnishing his reputation to avoid detection.
- 2:43That's exactly what happened. That's not an allegation, that's not
- 2:47a maybe. That's what happened. And for all these years
- 2:50they've denied it, they've made excuses, and they've acted like
- 2:54it's been overblown. But the truth is they've been covering
- 2:57it up. And not to veer too far off course,
- 2:59but it looks like a serious trafficking ring has been
- 3:03covered up over in the UK as well. Rupert Lowe
- 3:06has a new report out about grooming gangs, and we're
- 3:09going to get into that too, because I think it
- 3:11dovetails with what we talk about now. Of course, there's
- 3:15people who say that the numbers inside of that inquiry
- 3:19are overblown, but my response to that is even one
- 3:23girl is enough. If one girl suffered that kind of
- 3:26fate at the hands of some kind of grooming gang
- 3:28and it was covered up, that needs to be investigated.
- 3:32And I think it goes directly to the heart of
- 3:34what we're dealing with when it comes to Epstein. A
- 3:38lot of it has to do with institutional embarrassment. I
- 3:41need you guys to understand that, and these governments will
- 3:45go to great lengths to try and make sure that
- 3:48that doesn't occur, even if that means covering up something
- 3:52like Jeffrey Epstein or the grooming gangs. Over in the UK,
- 4:00Jamie Raskin, top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said
- 4:03in a statement that Harvard and Bard had both previously
- 4:06attempted to investigate the role their universities and leadership played
- 4:11in facilitating Epstein's abuse, but that those attempts either failed
- 4:15or fell short of a full accounting of what occurred. Well,
- 4:18hold on one second, you mean internal investigations don't work.
- 4:23Come on, you should be able to investigate yourself, right
- 4:26if you commit a crime, he don't worry about it.
- 4:29I'm taking a look at myself. I just looked at
- 4:32my books and everything's okay here. Meanwhile, you're stealing money
- 4:35hand over fist. The whole entire internal investigation is some
- 4:39of the biggest bs in the history of big bs.
- 4:43Among other demands for information, Raskin has asked Bard to
- 4:46make Leon Botstein, its outgoing president, whom Bard has said
- 4:50will retain a role at the college, available for a
- 4:53transcribed interview. Raskin also requested records related to Ebstein's donations, communications,
- 4:59admission interactions, and institutional decision making, as well as the
- 5:04full results of an internal review by the college. Raskin
- 5:10is also seeking extensive records from Harvard, including all records,
- 5:13financial documents, and communications relating to Ebstein's funding of research
- 5:18and his personal relationship with faculty members. I mean, that's good,
- 5:23and we should be getting all of that, but I
- 5:25doubt he will. Remember a lot of this stuff was clandestine,
- 5:29A lot of this stuff was done on the down low,
- 5:31and Epstein knew not to have a paper trail. He
- 5:34knew better. So the whole entire internal review has always
- 5:37been a bunch of nonsense to me. Raskin is also
- 5:42seeking extensive records from Harvard, including all records, financial documents,
- 5:47and communications relating to Ebstein's funding of research and his
- 5:51personal relationships with faculty members. Raskin said Harvard's previous investigation
- 5:57into the university's ties to Epstein, conducted in two thousand
- 6:00and eight in twenty nineteen, we're at best incomplete and
- 6:04at worst misleading. Man, Am I really agreeing with Jamie
- 6:09Raskin right now? Not exactly, somebody I agree with all
- 6:12the time, but he's not wrong here, and there needs
- 6:15to be a full accounting. Any of these universities that
- 6:20receives one single dollar in public money should be on
- 6:23the hook to explain away their relationship with someone like
- 6:26Jeffrey Epstein, and up until this point Harvard has not done. So.
- 6:31Every single excuse they give, every reason they give, is
- 6:34worse than the last. I mean, if the president of
- 6:37your university is palaling around with Jeffrey Epstein, and Jeffrey
- 6:41Epstein has an office on the campus of Harvard, I'd
- 6:45say that that's a problem that starts at the top,
- 6:48right the president of the university. We're not talking about
- 6:51some rebel ass professor who decided to do this after
- 6:56the university told him no. The universe encouraged it. They
- 7:02might not have said it, but their behavior encouraged this
- 7:06kind of shit, and with their internal reports, the idea
- 7:09was to whitewash that, to make it like the university
- 7:13had no idea and that it was just a couple
- 7:15of professors and a couple of people on campus who
- 7:18thought it would be a good idea to have a
- 7:19relationship with Epstein. That's what they tried to frame it as,
- 7:24but that was never the truth, and now Jamie Raskin
- 7:28is calling them out. Raskin said the internal investigation failed
- 7:31to uncover a series of donations Epstein made after Harvard
- 7:35had instituted a ban against such donations in two thousand
- 7:38and eight, as well as the full extent of his
- 7:40relationship with Harvard faculty members, including Harvard's former president Larry Summers,
- 7:45and the depth of his personal involvement with student admissions
- 7:49and faculty research. Yeah, how many people got in there
- 7:52because of Epstein? How many times did Epstein reach out
- 7:55and get somebody into the school? I'm sure if you remember.
- 7:59At the heart of it, that's what Jeffrey Epstein was
- 8:02a fixer, and he knew if he could get some
- 8:05vulnerable girls into Harvard, then he'd be able to abuse
- 8:09them and not just actually, but in general, have them
- 8:12do whatever he wants them to do, whenever he wants
- 8:14them to do it, because if they don't, well, they'll
- 8:17lose their spot at Harvard, and they'll lose their immigration
- 8:21visa and they'll have to go back to whatever country
- 8:23they're from. And that was the guillotine hanging over the
- 8:25head over these girls. It's time for Harvard, like the
- 8:31rest of America, to come clean and engage in the
- 8:34comprehensive accounting that will allow us to learn from this nightmare,
- 8:37take appropriate legislative action, and make sure nothing like it
- 8:41ever happens again. Raskin sent in a letter to Harvard
- 8:44President Alan Garber, and look, I doubt we're going to
- 8:47stop it from ever happening again, but hopefully we're more
- 8:51vigilant this time, and hopefully people recognize the signs and
- 8:56they do something about it, they step up. Harvard announced
- 9:02in February that Summers was resigning from teaching at the
- 9:05end of the academic year. The announcement followed the Justice
- 9:08Department's release of the Epstein files, which revealed more details
- 9:12about Summer's and Epstein's relationship. The email showed Summers and
- 9:16Epstein communicated frequently on topics ranging from politics to women,
- 9:21including Summers pursuing a relationship with a person who saw
- 9:24them as an economic mentor like I never understood the
- 9:28whole thing about teachers try and hook up with their
- 9:30students even in college. What are you doing? Why would
- 9:35you cause yourself that kind of headache, that kind of drama.
- 9:38Go to the local pub, find yourself somebody else, a
- 9:40different girl. Whenever there is that power imbalance, you're setting
- 9:45yourself up for a disaster. And when you walk into
- 9:49it willingly, well, you get what you deserve. Summer served
- 9:53as Harvard's president from two thousand and one to two
- 9:55thousand and six. Epstein donated more than nine million to
- 9:58Harvard and its affiliated program from ninety eight to two
- 10:01thousand and eight, which overlapped with Summer's tenure. Somers has
- 10:05previously said, I am deeply ashamed of my actions and
- 10:08recognize the pain they have caused. I take full responsibility
- 10:11for my misguided decision to continue communicating with mister Epstein. Yeah,
- 10:17after you got called out, after the whole country knew
- 10:19you were a scumbag, how come you didn't do it previously?
- 10:25In a separate letter addressed to Bar chair James Cox Chambers,
- 10:28whom The Guardian previously reported has recently stepped down from
- 10:32that role, Raskin said he was seeking to understand how
- 10:35Epstein exploited and leveraged multifarious ties in higher education from
- 10:41Bard to Columbia University, Harvard and NYU. Raskin pointed out
- 10:46in the letter that Botstein was resigning from his position
- 10:50as president, a role that he held for more than
- 10:52fifty years, following Obard initiated investigation that concluded his tenure
- 10:58was marked by substantial lapses in leadership and candor not
- 11:02exactly legacy building. Huh, imagine they do this report and
- 11:06that's what they come back with. Now can you imagine
- 11:09what an external report would find? There was evidence. Raskin
- 11:14said that Epstein's relationship to Botstein and barred leaders helped
- 11:17them maintain and expand his illegal activities, including potentially trafficking
- 11:21women in New York and the Russian Federation. And that's
- 11:25a big story the Russian Federation. I doubt it's ever
- 11:29going to get legs, but boy, there were a lot
- 11:32of women and girls abused from the Russian Federation one
- 11:36hundred percent. And that's because Epstein knew that he had
- 11:39friends in FSB that would press these women, make sure
- 11:43they didn't talk. I mean, look at the emails that
- 11:46he sent about Ganijeva and the response from his Russian contact,
- 11:51how they're gonna press her, How she's not protected by
- 11:53anybody in Russia, so it should be easy. And that
- 11:56should give you a little bit of a look at
- 11:58how these people operated. And when we're talking about people
- 12:02from the Russian Federation, what are they going to do?
- 12:04Go to the local police chief who's in the pocket
- 12:07of insert oligarch here. The Guardian reported last month that
- 12:11Bard's Board of trustees voted to end Botstein's fifty one
- 12:14year tenure after board members were presented with the results
- 12:18of an independent review of his relationship with Epstein. Botstein
- 12:22friened his departure as a long plan retirement in a
- 12:25statement on May first. Oh yeah, retirement, forced retirement. You
- 12:30mean these people shouldn't be able to save face with
- 12:33those kinds of statements. An Epstein victim who had previous
- 12:37interactions with Botstein, said she believed the Bard College president
- 12:41was part of a group of influential and accomplished men
- 12:44whose proximity to Epstein helped to rehabilitate his reputation one
- 12:49million percent. And that's the part that a lot of
- 12:52people leave out. A lot of people are like well,
- 12:55so and so didn't take heart in any abuse, So
- 12:57what's the big deal? They enabled, They helped rehabilitate this
- 13:02piece of shits reputation, and that of course led to
- 13:06countless girls being abused. And there was certainly levels to it,
- 13:11and there were certainly levels that reached criminality. And if
- 13:14we ever had a real investigation, well we would have
- 13:17seen that. A summary of an internal investigation conducted by
- 13:22the Wilmer Hell Law Firm, which was initiated by Bard's
- 13:25Board of trustees and was released publicly on May first,
- 13:28found that nothing Botstein did in connection to his relationship
- 13:31with Epstein was illegal. It also found that the Bard
- 13:34president was not fully accurate in describing his relationship with
- 13:38Epstein publicly or to the Bard community, and stated that
- 13:42Botstein did not fully see a risk to Bard's reputation
- 13:45when he pursued Epstein as a donor for the college,
- 13:48or the potential risk his contacts with Epstein posed to
- 13:51Bard's students. I mean, you know, a guy that's already
- 13:54been to prison for abusing a girl who was under age.
- 13:59No risk here, guys, squeaky clean, He's the fucking pope.
- 14:05The law firm noted that Botstein had not disclosed fees
- 14:08he accepted under a consulting agreement with epstein entity. Botstein
- 14:12previously denied being friends with Epstein, and has also said
- 14:16he never witnessed anything inappropriate nor had any visibility in
- 14:20Ebstein's monstrous crimes. He's never been charged with any wrongdoing
- 14:24related to Ebstein. We have received the letter and are
- 14:27reviewing it, a Bard College spokesperson told The Guardian. Harvard
- 14:31did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Raskin
- 14:34is seeking information from both universities by July. First. Look,
- 14:39this story is just beginning when it comes to higher
- 14:43education academia, and places like Harvard and Bard and like usual,
- 14:49will be here every step of the way as a
- 14:52story unfolds. As for this one, well that's going to
- 14:56do it. All the information that goes with this episode
- 14:59can be found in the description box.
