- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Zach Power.
- 0:06Speaker 1: The RNC is requesting the public's help as it investigates
- 0:09Speaker 1: a break-in in Paradise over the weekend. Police say a
- 0:11Speaker 1: home on Paradise Road was broken into sometime between 10 p.m.
- 0:15Speaker 1: on Friday and 11.45 Sunday night. A number of items
- 0:18Speaker 1: were taken, including an antique shotgun, which is not believed
- 0:21Speaker 1: to be working, and ammunition for a rifle. RNC are
- 0:24Speaker 1: hoping to identify and speak to the driver of a
- 0:26Speaker 1: red Hyundai Accent, which was seen in the area at
- 0:30Speaker 1: the time. Anyone with information is asked to contact the
- 0:32Speaker 1: RNC or Crime Stoppers. The owner of a CBS property
- 0:36Speaker 1: that was destroyed by a fire Saturday night says the
- 0:39Speaker 1: RNC and the town council were well aware of the
- 0:42Speaker 1: home that had become a trap house. Jesse Cave told
- 0:45Speaker 1: VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan that he had rented
- 0:48Speaker 1: the house to a friend, but the situation soon degenerated.
- 0:51Speaker 1: leaving him with little to no recourse. He claims that
- 0:55Speaker 1: he sought help from the RNC and the town of
- 0:57Speaker 1: CBS after handing out notices of eviction that were all ignored.
- 1:01Speaker 2: It's well known by the RNC and the town of
- 1:03Speaker 2: CBS and everything as a trap house. Now, here's the thing.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I had nothing to do with the trap house. Yes,
- 1:09Speaker 2: I rented the house out to the tenants, right? We're
- 1:12Speaker 2: good friends of mine. I rented it out and it
- 1:13Speaker 2: all spiraled out of control.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Green Party leader Elizabeth May believes that a recreational lobster fishery,
- 1:19Speaker 1: similar to a summer food fishery for cod, could be
- 1:22Speaker 1: sustainable for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. May presented a petition
- 1:26Speaker 1: in Ottawa last week calling on government to create what
- 1:29Speaker 1: she describes as a conservation-based recreational lobster fishery. She says
- 1:33Speaker 1: based on evidence she's seen so far, the science suggests
- 1:36Speaker 1: that the local population could easily support a non-commercial fishery
- 1:40Speaker 1: going forward.
- 1:41Speaker 3: There have been studies that look at how healthy is
- 1:45Speaker 3: the lobster population and could it sustain not a commercial
- 1:50Speaker 3: fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador, but a recreational fishery or
- 1:56Speaker 3: basically local non-commercial family consumption. And it certainly looks as
- 2:03Speaker 3: though the current population of lobsters is strong enough for
- 2:08Speaker 3: a conservation-based fishery of that kind.
- 2:10Speaker 1: The province's fish processing sector is being hit hard by
- 2:14Speaker 1: a labor crunch, and the problem is only expected to
- 2:16Speaker 1: get worse as the population continues to age. Not according
- 2:19Speaker 1: to a new report by Food Processing Skills Canada, which
- 2:23Speaker 1: says that labor shortages are going to hit the local
- 2:25Speaker 1: food processing sector harder than any other province. Kevin Elder,
- 2:29Speaker 1: who's with the organization, says that government has significant work
- 2:32Speaker 1: to do in order to recruit the necessary number of
- 2:35Speaker 1: workers by 2035.
- 2:37Speaker 4: And the hiring challenge that is there is massive, too.
- 2:41Speaker 4: You're almost hiring everyone that's currently working in the sector
- 2:45Speaker 4: again in another nine years, which is a huge ask
- 2:49Speaker 4: for the industry. For Newfoundland and Labrador, they had the
- 2:52Speaker 4: highest percentage of their food and beverage manufacturing workforce that's
- 2:56Speaker 4: over 55, which was 41%, and no other province is
- 3:00Speaker 4: above 33%. And they also had the fewest people under
- 3:04Speaker 4: 25 working in the sector at only 9.5%, and no
- 3:08Speaker 4: other province was in the single digit.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And that's your news. I'm Zach Power.
