- 0:17Speaker 2: Job hunters are being warned against using AI tools to
- 0:20Speaker 2: craft their cvs. So recent research shows half of New
- 0:23Speaker 2: Zealand job seekers using AI tools in their hunt for
- 0:26Speaker 2: a job. The trend is not only damaging their chances,
- 0:29Speaker 2: but it's also causing a headache for recruiters. To talk
- 0:32Speaker 2: us through the issue and give us some tips on
- 0:34Speaker 2: how to spot what produced cvs, go get a CEO.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Colin Getley joins me. Now, good morning, Colleen.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Good morning, how are you this morning?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Very good? Thank you? Can you talk us through the
- 0:45Speaker 2: issues that AI cvs are causing, like why should job
- 0:49Speaker 2: hunters think twice about using them?
- 0:52Speaker 4: Well, AI cvs have been fantastic for job hunters who
- 0:59Speaker 4: find it difficult to put a CV together, and I
- 1:03Speaker 4: think over half of New Zealanders actually do admit to
- 1:07Speaker 4: using a I to create a CV, And hey, why not?
- 1:11Speaker 4: Why wouldn't you chuck your chuck your experience into chat,
- 1:16Speaker 4: GPT or one of the other apps and you come
- 1:20Speaker 4: up with.
- 1:20Speaker 3: This beautiful CV.
- 1:23Speaker 4: The problem is that everyone's doing this, and there's also
- 1:25Speaker 4: apps that are able to match up your bot created
- 1:32Speaker 4: CV two job ads and send them out and you
- 1:35Speaker 4: end up all looking the same as everybody else. So
- 1:39Speaker 4: you're minimizing your chances of actually getting the role because
- 1:44Speaker 4: you don't look any different from anybody else.
- 1:46Speaker 3: That's one point.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Another point, and.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Another point is that.
- 1:56Speaker 4: You're we've got we're a weird situation where we've got
- 2:01Speaker 4: AI creating job ads for recruiters and AI creat cvs
- 2:09Speaker 4: for applicants. Yep, yeah, and so they're matching each other
- 2:16Speaker 4: together and there's no no recruiter involved at that point.
- 2:22Speaker 4: So if you understand the stats before AI, if you
- 2:26Speaker 4: send out a CV which was really carefully written all
- 2:29Speaker 4: about yourself with a cover CV, cover letter, et cetera,
- 2:33Speaker 4: you probably send out about thirty well written applications and
- 2:37Speaker 4: yet at least one interview. Okay, the stats now there different.
- 2:41Speaker 4: There's actually you send out one hundred cvs which has
- 2:45Speaker 4: goot like AI created and you want to like they
- 2:49Speaker 4: only get one interview.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So we're using AI to write the cvs. We're using
- 2:55Speaker 2: AI to write the job ad, yes, and then we're
- 3:01Speaker 2: also using AI to read the cvs and narrow down
- 3:05Speaker 2: the candidates correct okay.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Us out interesting that we've got a situation where it's
- 3:13Speaker 4: a very recruitment, it's really admin heavy. Excuse me, but
- 3:18Speaker 4: this is a human to human things. So what we've
- 3:20Speaker 4: done is we've created ourselves an assistant, which is actually
- 3:25Speaker 4: making us it harder for everybody else.
- 3:29Speaker 2: So there's no humans involved at any point really, which
- 3:32Speaker 2: seems ant bit insane.
- 3:35Speaker 4: It sounds really insane considering at the end of the day,
- 3:39Speaker 4: a human is going to interview the human and a
- 3:41Speaker 4: human actually has to do the job.
- 3:43Speaker 2: So I know that in Australia that they're seeing an
- 3:45Speaker 2: increase in applications for jobs with these machine gun application
- 3:49Speaker 2: approaches where hundreds of applications are created really quickly in
- 3:52Speaker 2: spamming employers. Are we seeing here in New Zealand.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yes, we absolutely are. You'll find that.
- 3:59Speaker 4: There's a lot coming in from overseas as well, so
- 4:04Speaker 4: you're getting a lot of international applicants applying for role.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And there are.
- 4:13Speaker 4: So many new AI apps coming out which are able
- 4:19Speaker 4: to upload your CV into and then send it out
- 4:24Speaker 4: without you even thinking knowing about it. You can just
- 4:27Speaker 4: load in hey I have any skills. Any job that
- 4:31Speaker 4: is loaded on a platform job board that just sends
- 4:37Speaker 4: them out.
- 4:38Speaker 2: This is the sort of a nightmare for everybody, really,
- 4:41Speaker 2: isn't it. But you know, it's a nightmare for people
- 4:43Speaker 2: trying to get a job, and it's a nightmare for
- 4:44Speaker 2: recruiters as well. Couldn't So essentially, could the AI pack
- 4:48Speaker 2: up that your CV was an AI created and does
- 4:52Speaker 2: that immediately put you in another pile that maybe it'll
- 4:55Speaker 2: get looked at?
- 4:56Speaker 4: It can, yes, but two ways. One is that all
- 5:00Speaker 4: it can check it out. For example, if you've got
- 5:06Speaker 4: a table an your CV, it might flag it and.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Say I can't read it.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Gone, okay, yeah, if you has been I often quote
- 5:17Speaker 4: like design cvs are created in specific software.
- 5:21Speaker 3: If the bot can't read it, then you discarded.
- 5:25Speaker 4: So there can say little things in your CV that
- 5:28Speaker 4: even though you put a lot of work into it,
- 5:32Speaker 4: can discard you.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Okay. So what advice do you have when it comes
- 5:37Speaker 2: to using, you know, to creating a CV that might
- 5:41Speaker 2: get looked at and might help you get a job
- 5:43Speaker 2: and stand out. Obviously, the first thing is don't do
- 5:45Speaker 2: any sophisticated design. Just write a very simple CV.
- 5:49Speaker 3: I presume, Well, how odd?
- 5:52Speaker 4: Let me just say one thing we're talking about how
- 5:54Speaker 4: to beat the bot.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah, we've created to make.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Things easy for ourselves, So isn't that bizarre that we
- 6:02Speaker 4: actually created work for ourselves to do that. But there
- 6:05Speaker 4: are some things that you can do and some and
- 6:07Speaker 4: that is to make your CV do stand stand out.
- 6:11Speaker 4: I would personally, if you put your CV through as
- 6:16Speaker 4: a creator, then relook at it and change your word
- 6:20Speaker 4: into it sounds like you read this, read the CV.
- 6:23Speaker 4: It doesn't sound amazing or it doesn't sound like you
- 6:26Speaker 4: at all?
- 6:26Speaker 3: Is it the words that you would normally use.
- 6:30Speaker 4: There's some words that stand out to creators, like to recruiters,
- 6:34Speaker 4: like delve and leverage and if it's been if it's
- 6:41Speaker 4: Americanized spelling, all those things will stand out. Even if
- 6:45Speaker 4: you get through show it or recruiter that your actual
- 6:49Speaker 4: cvs being created by an AI application.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, I know, I hear that. These days
- 6:59Speaker 2: it's actually all about the cover letter, not necessarily about
- 7:03Speaker 2: the CV. So when we're applying for jobs online, we
- 7:06Speaker 2: able to put in a very per you know what
- 7:08Speaker 2: is obviously an authentic cover letter.
- 7:12Speaker 3: I definitively would recommend that.
- 7:13Speaker 4: I definitely would recommend that that's the that's the point
- 7:18Speaker 4: where your personality can shine through, and that's that's the
- 7:24Speaker 4: that's once your CIV is through, if you're if the recorder,
- 7:28Speaker 4: then on the short listing gets to read your application,
- 7:33Speaker 4: the first place they're going to go to is your
- 7:35Speaker 4: cover letter and then we're going to find want to
- 7:38Speaker 4: find a little bit of human element in there. The
- 7:42Speaker 4: thing that's missing in all this process, sadly, is that
- 7:46Speaker 4: human intuition. And my concern here for applicants is that
- 7:53Speaker 4: if you don't do that, you're not going to have
- 7:56Speaker 4: an opportunity to stand out from the crowd.
