- 0:00Back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with Luke Murray, the Husky assistant
- 0:04Luke Gonzaga coming up. You're kicking a close look at them, getting the
- 0:08team ready. Do you when you do these scouting reports, do you find
- 0:12yourself saying, I really like that player on the other team. Does that
- 0:15ever happen? Unfortunately? Yeah, that usually means you're playing somebody good.
- 0:20But yeah, absolutely, And you know, Gonzaga has got a really good
- 0:24team. You know, did the sky with these guys last year, you
- 0:28know, and so have some familiarity coming into the game. You know,
- 0:31style of play wise, it's pretty similar. You know, Nemhart, I'm
- 0:34sure some fans remember from his time at Crayton, you know, over at
- 0:37Gonzaga now, so there's familiarity there in terms of the way that he likes
- 0:41to play. But yeah, I mean, Graham Ike transferred, big guy
- 0:44from Wyoming, is a really good player. Anton Watson's taking a big step
- 0:47here in his fifth year at Gonzaga, and Hickman and some of the other
- 0:51guys that were a big part of last year's team as well. Yeah,
- 0:54let's talk about their offense. They score, they always score. They're still
- 0:57scoring. They get their eighty five a game. What is the key to
- 1:00their scoring ability because Gonzaga has always been a high octane offensive unit. Yeah,
- 1:07I mean, I guess similarly to North Carolina. You know, the
- 1:08first thing is transition defense. You know, they really emphasize getting the ball
- 1:11off the court on a made or misshot, so making sure that we're doing
- 1:15a great job of sprinting back, you know, stopping the ball high on
- 1:18the floor, not allowing for any easy buckets in the open court or transition
- 1:23threes. And then in the half court. They're a very pick and roll
- 1:26heavy team, you know, so our ball screen defense has to be elite.
- 1:29That was a big part of why we won the game last year in
- 1:30Vegas against them. We were really locked into pick and roll. And they're
- 1:34a team that really likes to feature their big guys and they throw the ball
- 1:37inside in the high low game a lot a variety of different ways. You
- 1:40know, I mentioned Watson and Ek, but they also have two big guys
- 1:42off the bench and Huff and Greg that are good players. And so I
- 1:46would say transition, pick and roll defense and then guarding inside is going to
- 1:49be the key. What about the psychology of this stuff. You're good on
- 1:53the x's and os, obviously, but they got their butts kicked in that
- 1:57Las Vegas final. It was eighty two fifty four. You come put a
- 2:02hurting on them? Are they going to come out here with an extra sense
- 2:07of get back at the Huskies? What do you think I would think?
- 2:10So? I mean, I can't imagine that they wouldn't, you know.
- 2:14And even with this year's team, you know, they had a tough loss
- 2:16to Washington the other night in an a rivalry game for them, a game
- 2:21that they had a double digit lead in the second half. So I'm sure
- 2:23that there's a number of things that they're they're looking to get right. But
- 2:27at the same time, you know, our program is going out there with
- 2:30the intent to play a great basketball game and we're ready to go. The
- 2:35final quick thought here, Luke, This gun Zager program tremendous history, two
- 2:38time final four, been a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament a couple
- 2:43of times, five Elite Age twelve, Sweet sixteens. When you play a
- 2:46program like that with that kind of winning pedigree, how do you take them
- 2:51out of that? How do you get an edge on them? It's really
- 2:54hard. As you mentioned, I mean coach Feugh, I mean, he's
- 2:57a Hall of Fame coach. You know. I remember back in Xavier playing
- 3:00Gonzaga and the Elite Eight in San Jose and losing to them. I mean,
- 3:04they're a tremendous program, you know. I think, you know again,
- 3:07I think we have to stick to our identity. We have to really
- 3:08make sure we're do a great job of improving defensively from where we've been in
- 3:13the early going. I think we got to continue to run our offense,
- 3:15you know, crisply and execute. And I think we got to be the
- 3:19more physical team. You know, you mentioned they're going to have some added
- 3:21motivation in the game. But again, we have to be the aggressors.
- 3:24We have to be the team that really sets the tone with our with our
- 3:27physicality and our toughness. And I think if you can do that, possession
- 3:30after possession, you know, regardless of the opponent, you put yourself in
- 3:34a good position to win. Yes, stack some good possessions up one after
- 3:37another and come out of there and make it a nice sweet ride home.
- 3:40How about that, coach man, that'd be nice? All right? Thanks
- 3:46to Luke Murray, and Dan Hurley. Of course, this is Mike chris
- 3:49Pino. Thanks for joining us on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show.
