- speaker-0: Hey, welcome into Average Home Theater. I am Nelson. speaker-1: What's up everybody, producer Nick with you. speaker-0: So man, just y y'all are gonna have to pardon the ⁓ the fans because it's like six hundred degrees outside. speaker-1: The heat index right now at six fifteen PM in southwest Louisiana is a hundred six degrees. And I don't like it. speaker-0: We're just saying it's hot. It's hot. Kinda like today's topic. speaker-1: Today's topic. Today's topic which I came up speaker-0: kinda shocked that it had we haven't come up with it already because I know I've done yeah I think I may have done just action movies in general. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: But you suggested what? speaker-1: Well, I suggested eighties action movies. Classic, classic for us eighties action movies. And it was my idea. And then the more I thought about it, I don't know that I would have been able to come up with a decent list. And this is why. I didn't actually start watching movies and paying attention to movies until I ⁓ maybe mid nineties, maybe late nineties. Like I didn't I watched movies and I had seen movies. But like you grew up watching certain things. I I mean, we watched movies, but I know you grew up y'all had VHS that y'all had and you'd watch stuff over and over again. I didn't really have that growing up. ⁓ I didn't I didn't watch movies as a kid. I watched cartoons and stuff on Saturday mornings and those kind of things. But like really starting getting into movies was relatively recent. So having said that, when I sat down and started thinking, okay. My eighties action movies list. I had like commando. And that's and that's not something that I saw until I was an adult. And I started panicking. Like, holy crap, I'm not gonna really have a list 'cause there's a lot of things that you've seen that I just haven't seen. Right. So then we kinda talked about, Well, why don't you talk about some movies and I'll kinda just ⁓ you know, we'll have a conversation. speaker-0: Okay, so I like speaker-1: That's something that I can participate in today. speaker-0: Yes, you can you can you can feed off of what I say and maybe question why I didn't put certain things on if if I start to jog your memory on some stuff. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, 'cause I didn't like after we talked about it this afternoon I kinda stopped stressing about making a list 'cause I was I was stressing about it. It's like we're gonna have to we're gonna do this thing this afternoon and I'm not gonna have a a whole lot to say. So ⁓ yeah, I like I like this format today. speaker-0: So I came up with ten and ⁓ I had to put a like I like to do with myself, I like to put rules in place, right? Right. And so my rules were no science fiction, no horror, like it had to be just action, like police, military, stuff like that to where it's you know more grounded in reality. speaker-1: So for example, like no aliens. speaker-0: Aliens, that was no Terminator Two. ⁓ even though Terminator Two would be in the nineties, but well speaker-1: Okay. Terminator Terminator would have been on my list. It would have been all or old movies. speaker-0: Right. And so I cut that out, ⁓ Predator, I cut it out because that's science fiction. So this is just action movies. One that that might bend the rule a little bit, but it's not science fiction. It might it's a little skating on the line of kinda horror, but when we get to it we'll talk about it, you'll see. speaker-1: Okay. So you just Well you just ticked off all the movies that would have been on my list, so speaker-0: And that's why I wanted to make it interesting. speaker-1: I like this I like this format. Let's let's do it. speaker-0: Okay, so number ten. Very easy. Most people growing up in the eighties and nineties love this movie. Young Guns. Self explanatory. Yes. Great action movie. Hollywood Western. You can't say enough about the cast. You know, Emilio Estevez and his brother Charlie Sheen. Yeah, Kiefer Sutherland. speaker-1: Number ten. The time That was a that was a phenomenal cast. They were in everything. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, yeah. That that fits the bill. ⁓ Young Guns is something that I've seen. I would not have thought to put it on my list because it's a Western, but you are definitely right. It's an action movie. It's an action movie. And it is a classic. speaker-0: ⁓ yeah, it it was such a yeah. Yep. And and I kinda struggle between because I really do like Young Guns 2 a lot. So I kinda struggled between which one. But I just went with the classic. I f I think the second one is funnier. but the first one is definitely the better action movie, I think. Plus it's just the original, you know. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. Yeah. In in true producer Nick fashion, I saw the f second one before I ever saw the first one. So Do you do But that's that just that's something that ⁓ my my grandfather took me and a couple of my cousins one day. They were going to the movies and we went with them and that's what we would see. And I had never I had never watched Young Guns. I had never never didn't know what it was about. So speaker-0: Do that a lot. speaker-1: You know, that's just that just kinda goes to show and prove my point that I didn't watch a lot of stuff when I was little when I was that age and it just kinda I kinda grew into it. ⁓ but yeah, I saw saw Young Guns too before before Young Guns and like it was a long time. speaker-0: Look, Lou Diamond Phillips is talking about Young Guns 3 like it's happening. So even though Chavez Chavez died, maybe he didn't die. Because we didn't actually we just saw him fall off the horse. Maybe he didn't die. speaker-1: ⁓ that would be great. Maybe he didn't die. And we all know what happened ⁓ to Billy the Kid. Watch our ⁓ Memor. So yeah, number ten. That's a good one. speaker-0: Good action movie. So the next one we recently spoke about this one. ⁓ it's not science fiction, but it's dystopian future. And it stars Yafit Koto. ⁓ speaker-1: Mm-hmm. ⁓ think I know where you're going with this? I think I know where you're going with this. speaker-0: think most people know him, but ⁓ he goes by the name of Arnold Schwarzenegger. speaker-1: ⁓ that's that guy with the accent, right? Put the cookie down. That guy. His his most famous his famous line, put the cookie down. speaker-0: Yes. ⁓ so The Running Man, nineteen eighty one of the greatest action movies of all time. speaker-1: Yeah man. ⁓ Again, first time I ever saw that was with you. You showed me the wrong image. speaker-0: First I knew total recall. speaker-1: I had never seen The Running Man before I sat and watched it. And and how long ago was that? I mean, again, the passage of time is lost on me. It seems like Yeah, it's it's been a while, but ⁓ I've definitely seen it several times since. You can't I mean, Arnold has some some quotable movies. This might be his most quotable movie. Just the ridiculous speaker-0: Probably been about ten years. ⁓ it's great. Almost everything he says is absurd. speaker-1: The ridiculousness of the things that come flying out of his face are legendary. yeah. speaker-0: You have a travel path. Now I do. What? Why would I go with you? Because I'm going to say plea. Yeah, it's just great. speaker-1: Peace. Great over the top ⁓ ridiculous. speaker-0: Which I did not put on my list, by the way. Which it said over the top. I did not put it on my list. speaker-1: Is that the one where ⁓ is that the one where ⁓ yeah Sylvester Stallone has the arm wrestle to save his child? There's a ⁓ it's not I thought it was to do with some kind of he had to win to get custody of his child or something. I didn't know. Okay. Sorry. Obviously I have not seen over the top. speaker-0: It's not to save his job. No, ⁓ you've never seen it? speaker-1: No, I've never seen it. I've never seen it on the top. speaker-0: Put it on your list right now. Over the top. speaker-1: I'm I'm going through the Rocky movies again so I can add it to my Sylvester Stallone list. speaker-0: By way, change of subject. I was looking for ex machina the other day. Did I let you borrow that? speaker-1: ⁓ you did, and I'm pretty sure I still have it. Yes, I'm look I'm looking at it right now. I'm looking at the four K right now. I still have it. speaker-0: I was like, where's ⁓ where's my movie? Okay, cool. speaker-1: I'll I'll trade it for ⁓ for Sicario too. We can ⁓ we can do like a prisoner swap. ⁓ at least I watched Ex Machina. speaker-0: ⁓ yes, they'll have success. Unwatched. ⁓ you did watch it? No, you never told me. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, I liked it. I liked it a lot. Yeah, yeah, I I really enjoyed it. It's been a while I watched it. Yeah. We dig. speaker-0: Okay. Moving on. So this is the movie that kind of bends my rule a little bit. Okay. ⁓ because it has a little bit of a little bit of a horror element where somebody takes over someone else. Like their their spirit or their soul takes over someone else. Okay. ⁓ it stars Linda Dickey. Okay. And ⁓ she becomes a ninja assassin. ⁓ in the movie Ninja Three The Domination. speaker-1: Number three. The third of the three. speaker-0: Greatest major movie ever made. speaker-1: I watched that I th I I watched that with you at least once. I know we watched it at a Grove meeting. And we so I have seen it twice. That was ⁓ that was definitely one of the movies ever made. speaker-0: We wash it at the groove. When I Dude, this movie is awesome. I don't care what anybody says. Watching a ninja get shot seven hundred times by police officers who are all crossfiring and none of them hit each other and he still doesn't die. And then he kills like forty of them. And then they go about their business later on and he's flirting with her right after 40 of his comrades. I mean, the movie's great. speaker-1: Why? None of them hit it. Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. It's it's only something that could have been done in the eighties. speaker-0: ⁓ my god, dude. A Canon films? speaker-1: Quent Quintessential eighties action ninja movie. speaker-0: And when I say we watched the crap out of this movie when we were kids, I mean speaker-1: That's one of the VHS that y'all had recorded from speaker-0: Actually no, that was Kobe had it. Our friend Kobe. He would come to the house. My parent my mom babysat him, right? So during the summertime and during like vac ⁓ Christmas breaks and all of that stuff, he would come spend the night because his parents had to work. So he'd like spend the days and nights with us while they worked and whatnot. So he would always bring different movies and Ninja Three The Domination was one and we would watch all the time. speaker-1: That was on the ⁓ the permanent rotation. speaker-0: ⁓ man. And as soon as I was you know, old enough to buy a copy, I went ahead and got it. ⁓ yeah. And you know, funny enough, I've seen Revenge of the Ninja, didn't like it as much, and I've never seen Enter the Ninja, which is the first one. speaker-1: But aren't they not related at all? Like it's the same actors playing different characters but the stories aren't related at all or something. One guy show speaker-0: The one guy, the Shoku or Shoku, whatever his name is, he's in all three of them. He's the one in this movie, he's the the good ninja that is flown in from Japan to kill that one. He plays actually, I think he's the bad guy in like the first one, and then he's like the hero in the second one, and then in this one, something, but it's the same actor in all three movies, but none of them have anything to do with each other. speaker-1: Some samurai cop stuff. speaker-0: ⁓ it's great. It's better than Samurai Cobb. speaker-1: Unfortunately Samurai Cop was made in the early nineties, so that couldn't make anyone's list. speaker-0: Yes, I mean I was whew, I was like, man, I was so ups no damn it. Yeah. ⁓ speaker-1: All right. Yeah, Ninja Three, that's another one that I've seen. So we're going strong. speaker-0: Okay, next one. Probably considered one of the greatest dystopian post-apocalyptic movies ever. ⁓ it's my favorite in the series, I think. And that would be The Road Warrior, or sometimes called Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior. speaker-1: The Road Warrior, okay. That so that is something that I saw I remember seeing because that's one of those TBS movies. It was on TBS all the time, I feel like. speaker-0: It it was picked up I think on T V or whatever and it just on syndication, it just played like crazy. So that speaker-1: All the that's that's something that I remember seeing bits and pieces of when I was little just on TV. ⁓ but fr front front to back, I've only seen it once that I remember, and it was fairly like within the last couple of years or so, ⁓ they were the the series, the the first three movies I guess. ⁓ the first trilogy was playing, it was on HBO or whatever, and I sat it and watched all three of ⁓ speaker-0: Ooh, you made it through Beyond Thunderdome? speaker-1: ⁓ it was horrible. It was so bad. speaker-0: I've tried recently and ⁓ my goodness. I need to watch it again because Jamie Ray and I were supposed to do a Mad Max discussion and I was like, ⁓ man, I gotta watch Beyond Thunderdome. And it's only like an hour and a half, but it feels like five hours. speaker-1: Yeah. Mm-hmm. That's work. It was so bad. I I remember why and I I don't again I I d I watched it and I remember there's one part where he finds like a like some type of oasis or whatever and these kids come out of nowhere. Mm-hmm. And I remember thinking, after not really paying attention to the rest of the movie 'cause it was so bad. But I remember thinking, Where did that where the hell did this stuff come from? The the second one is definitely the best out of those three. speaker-0: I don't even remember. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then yeah, ca so it was those three, and then years and years later, Fury Road and Furiosa, which I love those two. Yeah. speaker-0: Those are great. ⁓ and I I love Mad Max. Like I really do like Mad Max. speaker-1: Well, there's no Yeah. And I remember wanting to get the collection. It was like the four K collection was on sale and you had warned me like these are not this is not what you're thinking. So I I did I previewed ⁓ and and watched them on ⁓ on HBO or whatever they were streaming. And yeah, they're they're different. They're ⁓ made in Australia and just kinda the pacing is a little different, just something that we're not used to, I guess. ⁓ and the way it was it was shot gorilla style. ⁓ Which is was very much appreciated. But yeah, just just different and not really what you what I expected walking into ⁓ But having watched them I I enjoyed ⁓ Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah, good movies. ⁓ the original is hard to get through for some people. The second one it the second one seems the most mainstream, you know, the Road Warrior. And and that's because he had a budget because of the success of Mad Max. So he had a bigger budget and he was able to do more things with it. And it's actually ⁓ post apocalyptic to where Mad Max is not. It was yeah it was like dystopian, like society was starting to fall. But by the time the Road Warrior comes around. speaker-1: That's right. speaker-0: society had already fallen. Like it's not it's not nuclear war or anything like that. It's just a societal collapse is what it is. speaker-1: Yeah. And I feel like one of the guys, like the main bad guy, what word am I looking for? Villain is ⁓ didn't he recently pass away? In the last couple of weeks or two, maybe a month or two. Yeah, a month or two. Okay. I I Yeah. I I remember seeing something about that. Okay. Yeah, another great pick. speaker-0: Recently, yes, like very recently. Or humongous. So this next movie, you know I love it. Talk about it all the time. And I'm pretty sure I know I got you to watch this for the first time. And you were always you were a little averse to watching it because you had watched the third one and you were like, yeah. Okay. And ⁓ that is First Blood. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. First blood. Yeah. Yeah. A a classic. A a complete classic. And I I do I remember when we watched that, we sat and watched that. I had never seen it before. And it was not at all was out what I was expecting and a hundred a hundred times better than than what I was expecting. I mean that was that was within the last five years probably that I've seen. speaker-0: It was longer than Yeah, I I'm pretty sure when we watched it, I we watched it on my ⁓ my VHS. I think it's when I was when I was living when we were living in Maurice. I think it was Yes, it's been that long. And I remember you you really didn't want to watch it because you're like, dude, really? Rambo? speaker-1: God, it's been that long. Okay. ⁓ yeah, and I was never a big Sylvester Stallone guy and but yeah, I mean and I I bought I have the collection. I've bought every one of them that's come out since then. and I watch ⁓ like they're yeah, First Blood is is a classic. It's amazing. speaker-0: Yeah, the worst one is First Blood Part Two. That one's really kinda it's kinda weak. It's got some cool parts in it. but overall it's like ⁓ speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, the first one is you you can't talk and then after that, I mean ⁓ Rambo was just a a gore fest when he was blowing people's heads apart with that big ⁓ sixty or whatever it was. But yeah, the first one. Fifty cow. Big fifty cow. ⁓ yeah, I mean Brian Denih and and the you know, the chase scenes and speaker-0: Like when I explain to people about the movie and because they've never seen it and I give them the premise, they were like, That doesn't sound like Rambo. I'm like, I know. So watch the damn movie. So I'm trying to tell you. speaker-1: Yeah, it has nothing to do with him being in the war or in the jungle or anything like like that's what people mostly ⁓ associate with Rambo. But yeah, that first movie is not that speaker-0: Did you see what the movie John what is it is it gonna be called John Rambo that they're doing right now? speaker-1: ⁓ really? They're doing another one? speaker-0: They're doing a ⁓ when he's a young man, I don't know if he I think he's actually in Vietnam. speaker-1: Wow. ⁓ wait, maybe I didn't who would they get who were they getting to play? speaker-0: Who's playing I don't have no idea who's playing Ramble. I do know David Harbour. Is it Harbor or Arbor? Anyway Harbor. He's playing Richard Crenness character, ⁓ Colonel Troutman. speaker-1: Harbor. Okay. ⁓ which was he was easily the least good part of the first ⁓ speaker-0: He was the weakest part, the weakest link, you know. His acting was a little over the top. speaker-1: Yeah. And it it's almost enough to kinda take you out of it, but it the the rest of the movie is so good, it it survives. It pushes speaker-0: It ends being ⁓ a charm. Like, you know, it ends up being a charm of the movie. You get to kind of laugh at Richard Krenner's like, you know, he'll eat things that make a billy goat puke. speaker-1: No John. What? Don't do it. And and I mean just the like the wardrobe choices. He's wearing his like full uniform out in the field and all that. Like he's wearing Yeah. And I don't I don't know a whole lot about the military, definitely not as much as you, but would you agree that that was a little ⁓ a little out of place? speaker-0: I don't know. Scenario in that type he would have shown up in his fatigues. He would not have shown up in his class A's with his combat boots. speaker-1: Look, you had to they had to portray how important he was, I guess. Yeah. Yeah. That but still, as you say, I totally agree. A total classic. Easily the best one in the series. ⁓ yeah. speaker-0: Did you ever read the novel? I know I tried to get you to read it. It's good. It's a lot different, but it's good. It's called First Blood. speaker-1: No, I never did. I never did. It it's Fresh blood, okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Good pin. speaker-0: Hey well we've gotten through five and so far none of ⁓ you've disagreed with. speaker-1: None of ⁓ I've disagreed with, and I've seen ⁓ all. speaker-0: So this next one, I think you may have seen it at my once again at my ⁓ insistence, but I'm not a hundred percent, but I think you have. It stars two great actors whom we both love. it's from I think it's nineteen eighty six, maybe, or eighty seven. And it's about speaker-1: Okay. Two speaker-0: detectives having to watch a woman because they are waiting for her esc estranged husband who just escaped from prison. speaker-1: You are referring to stakeout. Stake. So listen. Saw the second one. I don't think I've ever seen the first one. I don't think I've ever seen the first one. I've seen the second one. speaker-0: Stake Out. What a great movie. The second one I saw it first. I saw it in the theater. I don't remember who took me, but I saw it in the theater and thought it was like the funniest thing ever. speaker-1: And that's with the one with Rosie O'Donnell. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, I've seen the second one. ⁓ I I d I don't know I don't know if I've seen the first if I did I don't remember it. speaker-0: First one, I mean it it has great chase scenes, good car chases and stuff like that. And it's it the the the violence is pretty good, especially at the beginning. The guy who plays the husband is Quinn. ⁓ I forget his name. I think Anthony Quinn is his dad. but it's what's her name? ⁓ Madeline Stowe. speaker-1: Okay. Madeline Stowe could watch her watch her read the phone book, man. speaker-0: Total babe in this man. And Richard Dreyfus, once again, he makes these two movies. Now, Emilio Estevez is great because he plays more the straight guy, you know, like he wants to follow the rules and do what's right, but it's still a buddy cop movie. They they're still silly, but overall he wants to like do the right thing. And Richard Dreyfus is just like nuts. He's always speaker-1: ⁓ man. speaker-0: doing what he's not supposed to or I say doing what he's not supposed to, but you know, kind of pushing the limits and he's just he's great. speaker-1: Which one was the one where Emilio Esteves had to shave his mustache to the second one? I guess they were pretending he was his son. That was his second one. Okay. Okay. Yeah, I'm I'm trying to rack my brain to to to remember if I ever saw the first one and I don't think I have. I really don't think I have. speaker-0: Dude, it's so good. It's so good. I mean stake another s I have ⁓ both on VHS. I don't have either one on D V D or Blu ray. I just have ⁓ on because I don't think they have Blu rays. I have to check. VHS. speaker-1: On to Amazon, I guess. Let me see. Yeah, why don't you make a check? Let me see real Since I don't have any notes to consult with. Let me see. Stakeout. speaker-0: But I definitely need to get those on disc because I just love ⁓ so much. speaker-1: Let me see. I do see another stakeout on Blu-ray, but not the original. speaker-0: My stake out, yeah. No I knew it was something like that that I thought both of ⁓ but speaker-1: It's looks like it's pre owned, one left in stock and it is fifteen forty nine. speaker-0: For another stakeout? speaker-1: But speaker-0: I may have another stakeout on D V D. I'm not but I don't think so. I think I just have the two VHS tapes. speaker-1: Yeah. You know what? I would have I would have completely forgotten that Richard Dreyfus was in those two movies. Yeah, I I remember Rosie O'Donnell and I remember Emilo Esteves but I completely forgot that that ⁓ Esteves was opposite Richard Dreyfus. Which is awesome. Because I just rewatched What About It's speaker-0: ⁓ my god, he's the best part. It kind of does push the limit on action. You know, it's not but there's several there are several action scenes and like I said, there's car chases and fight scenes and so it's not like real heavy on action, but I think it qualifies. speaker-1: It's not like Arnold action, but it's action enough. I gotcha. All right. speaker-0: Correct, correct, correct. This next one I'm not sure if you've seen these movies. All of them all there's four. There was three of them that was that were made and the third one was made in the early nineties and they had they didn't make another one until like two years ago. And first speaker-1: Okay. I was going with I I know what I was going with, but that last statement just disqualified my guess. Which I'm not gonna say 'cause it might be on your ⁓ on your list. speaker-0: The first one's probably my favorite, but the second one is better. Okay. And that is my answer. Number four is Beverly Hills Cop two. speaker-1: Okay. Beverly Hills Cop two. Okay. I've seen I've seen them all. I've seen all the Beverly Hills Cop movies. Yeah. I I only really rem I remember the third one wasn't very good. speaker-0: Impressive. That's the one in a theme park. speaker-1: In the theme park. I remember thinking that one wasn't great. I remember I I I'm I'm with the first one is probably the best one. I don't remember the second one as much. You know what it is is I get ⁓ mixed up, I think is what it is. speaker-0: Second one is one with Bridget Nielsen or Brigitte Nielsen, whatever her name is. Okay. ⁓ she she plays ⁓ they are ⁓ what you call it, they rob jewelry stores and speaker-1: Yeah, speaker-0: off a heist at the beginning and ⁓ they they almost kill Ronnie Cox because he was on to him like he was about to figure out what was going on. And so right that's why Axel goes back to Beverly Hills. Right. And what makes this one good is he's already friends with with those guys. So it's more of a a buddy cop thing than the first one is. You know, the first one they don't you know they they don't know who he is and he's He's an outsider, he keeps getting in trouble, he's a pain in the neck. So it's a great movie, but this one fits a little more in the action. speaker-1: Types are at odds with each other in the first one. The second one they're they're familiar with each other, yeah. So I I enjoy the ⁓ I enjoy the especially the first two. Axel F was I remember it being just kinda okay. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah, it was okay. I mean, it didn't cost anything, you watch it on Netflix, so it wasn't a big deal. speaker-1: Right, right. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I mean, Eddie Murphy and his prime, you know? ⁓ who who who better at that time to play ⁓ that kind of movie, like a an action comedy. Yep. You know? Yeah, that was ⁓ speaker-0: And he was so young in the first one, 'cause the first one's like eighty four, I think. ⁓ and I love the first one. Like that's the one I watch the most is is the first one. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. First one where he's walking down the street and they have a guy walking past him in this red leather outfit. ⁓ from the that's the one he turns around and speaker-0: Yeah, that's no, that's but you do realize he's not laughing at the outfit. He 'cause he recently talked about it when they made Axel F, it's 'cause someone asked him about that. He's like, No man, I wasn't laughing at what he was wearing. He's like, he made a face at me for friends. And he made a face at him and made him laugh. speaker-1: ⁓ Okay. And that's the take that they kept in the movie. speaker-0: the take that they kept in the movie. He said I remember that like it was yesterday. He that so and so and right as I was passing him he made a face and I just couldn't help it. That so he's not laughing at the outfit, he's laughing at the guy. speaker-1: That's a pretty cool little tidbit. That's cool. speaker-0: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But great movie. I love it. You have ⁓ the guy from ⁓ Perfect Strangers that Salge. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, ⁓ Bronson Pincho, I think his name is He was Balkie in Perfect Strangers. That's what I was watching in the eighties. Perfect Strangers and He Man and those kind of things. speaker-0: ⁓ he's so good. Yes, Yeah. Yeah, your parents weren't irresponsible like mine. Here, watch all these rated R movies. speaker-1: Yeah, here you go. Yeah, the first rated R the first rated R movie I ever saw was Terminator Two on VHS. We rented it from Kinney's video in Youngsville. And when that what was that like 91, 92 somewhere in there? That's so I would have been eleven. ⁓ no, it would have to have been after that because it was on VHS. speaker-0: Mm-hmm. When it came out, yeah. So it might have you might have been twelve or thirteen. speaker-1: Twelve or thirteen, yeah, 'cause I I kinda feel like maybe it had been out for a while. But I got I watched and so I watched the second one before I watched the first one. I didn't know what the hell was going on. I put in I chose to put in Terminator two before watching the Terminator. ⁓ Yeah, yeah, it's just it's just how I roll, I guess. My first ⁓ my first rated R movie. speaker-0: Well, it's par for the course. And I love Billy Murphy, man. ⁓ Because I thought I could have put forty eight hours on here. ⁓ I thought about another forty eight hours, but that one did make the cut because it was nineteen ninety. ⁓ and I love another forty eight hours. So, ⁓ but ultimately I just went with Beverly Hills Cop two because it's probably the it's kinda like ⁓ how we feel with Star Wars, how Empire Strikes Back is the best movie, but our favorite is a New Hope. It's kinda like that with this. Beverly Hills Cop two is probably the best one. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: But my favorite's the first. speaker-1: Yeah. So and just an aside with Eddie Murphy, ⁓ we had watched that ⁓ that movie he did, the the the Dolomite movie. I I don't know. Yeah, we sat and watched that in the average home theater and man he was he was great in that I think we were both kind of blown away at how how good that really was speaker-0: My name is Dolomite. We thought we were gonna be watching like a samurai cop. Like we thought we were gonna be watching something just cheesy, but hey, let's it's Eddie Murphy. It's probably gonna be funny. speaker-1: Yeah, it really, really was. So I I gained I remember gaining a a a different appreciation for Eddie Murphy after watching that. So yeah, just my little two cents on Eddie Murphy. Yep. Yep. Yeah, we could figure it out speaker-0: Yeah. Great movie, man. Okay, we're down to three. So what are the what are the top three eighties action movies? speaker-1: According to average home theatre. speaker-0: Nelson A.H.T. So this one I love these movies. I love all four of them. I think they're all great. But this one is the best and it's the funniest and it's the easiest to watch. speaker-1: Ha ha. This is where I thought you were going when you were talking about ⁓ Beverly Hills cop, but continue. speaker-0: So Lethal Weapon 2. And first one. It's actually the only one I own physically is the first one. ⁓ kind of waiting for all of them to come out on four K so I can get them all. The only one that's on four K right now is the first one. Yeah. But ⁓ the second one, I mean you get Joe Pesci, you Leo Gitz. And just the movie it it go 'cause the first movie, while there's comedy in it, it's pretty serious. speaker-1: I love the first Yeah. Yeah, I remember it getting kinda dark. speaker-0: You know what I'm saying? It's gets kind of dark. Yeah. ⁓ and and look, they all do. They all get kind of dark at some point. but the first one was probably the most serious. And by this one, they they've been partners a few years. Joe Pesci comes in and the whole tone changes. And it this is what when you think of Lethal Weapon, you think of that's two, three and four. Yeah. You know, because they they lean a lot more into the comedy and they're just a lot of fun to watch. Yeah. And I mean, this one right here is just it's tremendous. Tremendous movie. The South Africans and ⁓ I don't want to s I'm just making sure I'm not standing on plastic. speaker-1: Classic ⁓ a classic franchise, a classic series. I had no doubt that those were gonna be on your list. I've seen ⁓ all. I've seen ⁓ all each probably once. I I had never seen ⁓ within the last I guess I'd say a couple of years, I had never seen ⁓ and I sat and watched them all in in a in a few nights, watched them back to back to back to back to I remember that. Yeah. I liked them. I haven't watched them enough to be able to differentiate between the four. Mm-hmm. ⁓ they all kind of jumble together. You could tell me the plot of one of them and I wouldn't be able to pick it out. Right. But ⁓ but yes, I do remember enjoying them and I genuinely like Mel Gibson. Yeah, I mean, when you think about the th the stuff he's done and the different stuff he's done and the the movies he's made. yeah, Mel Gibson is is great. He's kinda done it all, he can do it all. speaker-0: ⁓ he's great. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, you can't go wrong with with lethal weapons. speaker-0: ⁓ yeah, the so the first one is they become partners for the first time. And ⁓ I mean it's got Gary Bucey as Mr. Joshua. Fight scene in the front yard. So the first one is great. Second one is with the South Africans who are over here and I think they're selling is it dope? Is that what it is? speaker-1: So in the Not me. speaker-0: So you got this, and they're using their diplomatic immunity. It's it's a diplomat. He's using his diplomatic immunity basically to get away with everything. And they have that big house on the on the stilts. Remember Mel Gibson hooks up his ⁓ truck to it and he pulls the house down. That's the second one. Okay. The third one is your boy who is ⁓ he's the he's the bad guy in Ninja Turtles 3 and ⁓ no escape. What's his name? speaker-1: Mm-hmm. That was the second one. Yeah, I do remember that. Saying speaker-0: Anyway, he plays the bad guy in this. He's like an ex cop who's doing some shady stuff and like they're they're using a a home development as their front. So there's like all this this big construction place and they have ⁓ what's her name? ⁓ is introduced as Mel Gibson's love interest. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. ⁓ Randy Russo. I remember that name. So it Stuart Stuart Wilson is who you were thinking of. speaker-0: Rene Russo. Wilson. Stuart Wilson's the bad guy. I mean you put Stuart Wilson in a Lethal Weapon movie, it's gonna be good. I mean i you know? speaker-1: I remembered his name from No Escape, but I couldn't remember his actual name. ⁓ Yeah. speaker-0: So anyway, that's Lethal Weapon Three. ⁓ and then Lethal Weapon Four is with Jet Lee and and the Chinese triads and Chris Rock is marrying and and all of that. So that's that's Lethal Weapon Four. And that one I love that one. So Dominic and I, when we did our greatest fights in cinema history, we have Riggs and Murtaugh versus Jet Lee. speaker-1: Okay. I do remember Chris Rob. speaker-0: That fight is awesome at the end. speaker-1: Isn't that like at a dock or something like that? It was near water. Yeah. Okay. I I vaguely remember that. And didn't ⁓ didn't Leo Getz I can't think of it, Joe Pesci, didn't he have kind of a bigger part in that in that fourth one? The third and fourth speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ In the third and fourth one. He's in I mean, he's in two, three, and four, and he's but the fourth one he had he plays a little bit bigger part. Maybe he's like a PI and stuff. speaker-1: ⁓ I remember him complaining about the cell phones. They they F you with the cell phones. Was that the is that the fourth one or the third one? The fourth one? speaker-0: I think so. I think it's the fourth one. 'Cause that's they wouldn't have had cell phones until the fourth one, you know. speaker-1: Yeah, that that stuck out. That that stuck out. speaker-0: But all that started with the second one where he's like, They F you in the drive thru. speaker-1: Yeah. Okay. So is it it was a continuing gag? That's good stuff. Okay. speaker-0: Lethal Weapon all the movies are great, but Lethal Weapon Two was still in the eighties. I think it's eighty nine. It's like right at the cutoff. And ⁓ it's it's the best one of the series in my opinion. So speaker-1: Okay. Can't go wrong with that. The the penultimate. speaker-0: The penultimate to steal from Jamie Ray. Now number two. These last two was very because this this is kind of like a ranking, okay? ⁓ but these last two, it was very difficult to decipher one and two. i tomorrow I might have a different opinion and say, nah, I should have put the other one first. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. Which is the beautiful thing about movies and art in general. speaker-0: Right. So I had to make a decision and in another list this movie's number one all the way. But I couldn't do it for this one. And that is nineteen eighty eight or sometimes I see eighty nine for some reason. ⁓ Die Hard with Bruce Willis. speaker-1: Okay. I mean I mean, come on. Not only is it one of the greatest movies of all time, not only is it one of the greatest action movies of all time, not only is it probably the greatest Bruce Willis movie of all time, it's also the greatest Christmas movie of all time. speaker-0: So you can put it on twelve lists and it's probably number one. speaker-1: Yeah. I mean what can we say about the original Die Hard that we can't s that that hasn't been said already? I mean, it is it we talk sometimes about, you know, the perfect movie, we talk about Jaws, we talk about Shawshank. Is Die Hard up there? Is Die Hard up there in the ranks of almost the perfect movie? speaker-0: I don't know. Die Hard is a perfect movie because are there really any flaws other than it's a kind of absurdity, okay? Which Jaws is absurd. I mean there great white sharks don't don't do that. They don't jump up on boats and eat people. speaker-1: Yeah, if we're gonna if we're gonna judge on absurdity then we're gonna have to disqualify last time. speaker-0: Every movie on this list. ⁓ but there are I don't recall and I've seen this movie I I can't even put a number on how many times I've watched it. I can't recall continuity errors. I I can't recall just things that seem I it just seems to me to be perfect. Like I don't see anything wrong with the movie. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. And here's and here's the the other thing about it, and we can talk about Bruce Willis all day long, but a great villain makes a great action movie, a great movie, whatever. He's he's up there. 'Cause we talk we've discussed doing a great villain, a greatest villain, ⁓ our favorite villain coming up for you know, when when the weather starts to get a little cooler. ⁓ I mean, Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber. speaker-0: Is he the greatest? speaker-1: Does it does it really get any better than that? I don't know. Calculated, intelligent, patient, I mean, sinister, evil, cold blooded. Yeah. ⁓ to me, of all the aspects that make that movie great, that's probably the best. That's probably the best the number one reason that that movie is so good. speaker-0: Well their contrast is I mean, look at Bruce Willis's character and his character, how they are on the opposite end of the spectrum and how they feed off of each other, even when they don't see each other. It's all over the radio. Yeah. But they ⁓ it it's I don't know, it's it's probably perfect, like you said. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. My f to the I'm I'm with you. I've seen it seven hundred thousand times. And without fail, the best part of the movie is when they meet up for the first time. Mm-hmm. Like it still kinda gives you that woo. It still kinda gives you that feeling no matter how many times you watch it. I mean, that's that's the mark of greatness right there. No matter how many times you watch it, you can still get that feeling. ⁓ Yeah. I and so having said all that, I can't even imagine what your number one is gonna be. speaker-0: Well, the only reason my number one is number one is because it's probably besides Star Wars speaker-1: Mm-hmm. Okay. speaker-0: The only movies I've probably watched more than Star Wars are Die Hard and this other movie, which I probably watched more because it's older. speaker-1: Okay. Okay. speaker-0: And that would be commando. speaker-1: Number one, commando. How did I guess that number one would have been commando? speaker-0: Because it's the greatest action movie of all time! speaker-1: So once again, something that I had never seen before. I had never heard of, heard of Commando until you told me about it and we sat down and watched it together and instant, instant classic. Right. I've seen it a trillion times, not as many times as you obviously. speaker-0: This is not a perfect movie. It's quite the opposite actually. But it is so good. god. I I watch this movie with a grin from ear to ear every time I watch it. Because it's it's perfectly absurd. It's its flaws add a charm to it. Like speaker-1: No, it's It's no Beastmaster. Yeah. speaker-0: Who who doesn't like seeing the trampolines making the stunt guys fly? Or a grenade hits nearby? speaker-1: Right. No. Are the the ⁓ the anti personnel mines on the outside of a building exploding it with fire from inside. speaker-0: Yeah. And we never saw the we never saw the dummies in front of the building because we you know, when you watch a bad VHS copy on a picture tube, see that stuff. All of a sudden we're watching it in beautiful Blu-ray goodness and it's like, ⁓ my god, I've never seen that. speaker-1: Couldn't see that. Wait a minute. It's like that it's like that Leonardo DiCaprio meme. When you just kinda notice the damn thing. speaker-0: Now, I will say this also the trampolines, I never saw those growing up on a standard four by three aspect ratio VHS. So I think that may have been cut out because I did not see it until I was older and seeing it in widescreen and like see you can see the little catapults. Like that was not something I saw as a kid. speaker-1: The little the little catapult. Quintessential, over the top, outrageous Arnold eighties action movie. He never reloads. He never aims. The the in the end when he's just walking around with the machine gun, no one can hit him. I mean, that was just pure let's shoot up as many bullets as we possibly can and make this as crazy as we possibly can awesome this. speaker-0: Several machine guns. Okay. I was I was in the army. I had to qualify ⁓ sixties. I had to qualify a saw. Had to qualify fifty cows. At the rate and he was firing that ⁓ sixty as long as he was, his hundred round belt that just never goes away would not have lasted like but it doesn't matter. speaker-1: Ha ha ha. Okay. The barrel would have melted off. Yes. He would there's no way he would have had enough time to to throw a pipe straight through Bennett's entire body and into another metal thing that steam would come out of it. again, again, fantastic villains. ⁓ Dan Haida and ⁓ and ⁓ I'm forgetting Bennett's speaker-0: ⁓ good. Clo like dude, I love that guy. And I I've said it many times. I have met how many celebrities have I met, Nicholas? I mean speaker-1: A close personal friend of yours. You got a you got a wall of fame. speaker-0: He is the absolute best. Yeah. I mean, total sweetheart of a of a guy, just down to earth, awesome dude. I love Vernon Wells. It I am gonna go into a depression when he passes. There's no doubt. No doubt. But I mean his performances in his in his wardrobe that was too small because it was supposed to be another actor that couldn't make it. And so he just stuffed him in there like a boudin. speaker-1: His chains his chain mail vest. ⁓ my goodness. Yeah, I mean another another super quotable movie. You got Sully, you got Bennett, you got Arnold, Alyssa Milano. Was that her was she in that was her first role? Yep. So that was before Who's the Boss? Ray. Ray Don Chong. Who speaker-0: Boss, yeah. ⁓ She didn't do a whole lot, but she was really good in this movie. speaker-1: Yeah. She was great. You can't acting wise she might have been the best part. ⁓ you you can't you can't top you can't top commando. speaker-0: This is not a plane. This is a canoe with wings. They get in and start paddling. speaker-1: I mean look when he gets off of that that plane, that seaplane, and rows that boat with all of his equipment in just his skivvies and then gets prepared on the beach, that that's when you know it's on. ⁓ it's that's when you know it's gonna be. Yeah, he's going to kill everyone and save the day. speaker-0: The amount of weapons and explosives on his body speaker-1: That he he just couldn't he couldn't prepare in the plane. He couldn't he had to do it on the pitch. speaker-0: In Speedo's rowing to show his chest. Yeah, yeah. Tying his ⁓ grenades on. speaker-1: In close ups. ⁓ man. Look. Yeah. Listen, I'm watching Commando tonight. ⁓ I'm cooking me some good. I'm cooking me some supper and I'm watching Commando tonight. speaker-0: Don't forget the watch that goes, every speaker-1: But only but only when you look at it. Only when he's looking at it. If he if it's not on camera and close up then it doesn't make sense. speaker-0: Only when he looks like Looking at through traditional binoculars, but whenever they show the POV shot it's like this rectangular-shaped binocular. speaker-1: ⁓ but that's after he ⁓ crawls from the cabin of the plane to the landing gear and falls off into the swamp. Unscathed. Unscathed. Gets up and and walks away like he just got out of bed in the morning. Because that's what he does because he's Arnold Friggin' Schwarzenegger. and let's not forget the appearance from Bill Duke. ⁓ the fight scene. The fight scene in the little hotel room. speaker-0: ⁓ Bill Duke the great I eat green berets for breakfast. And now I'm really hungry. speaker-1: ⁓ No, I'm really hungry. ⁓ yeah, you you can't you can't go wrong with commando. speaker-0: ⁓ Yeah, ⁓ it it it's hard to beat it. It's it's a terrible, ridiculous, but at the same time, for some reason, it it just it is so good. It is so good. speaker-1: Look, it's when when we had the discussion about the topic, it's the first without without hesitation, first movie that came into my mind was it's it's number one's gonna be Commando and then there's the nine other ones. So yeah. I had I had no no doubts, no surprises, no surprises here. Yeah. speaker-0: So the only one I'm gonna kind of mention is I had no Van Damme movie. And I just couldn't there was nothing I could delete, but I did want to incorporate at least one Jean Claude V because he made some of the greatest action movies of all time. The problem is he didn't hit his prime until ninety or ninety one. So he he was just a little behind, but cyborg, but it was too science fiction. speaker-1: Okay. Yeah. speaker-0: So that's why I left it off. But it's if you think about it, what's going on right now with AI and robots, it it may not be as far fetched. Like in another ten years, it may not even be considered science fiction anymore. speaker-1: Yeah. We might be walking around not knowing who's ⁓ who's real who's not Yeah. Fiction The science off. Yeah. speaker-0: It'll just be fiction. You know? Yeah, it's just fiction. It's not science fiction. Yeah. Same thing with like ex machina. That might not be science fiction pretty soon. That's just gonna be fiction. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah they're they're that there's no doubt they're working on it right now. Yeah. There's some there's some prototypes out there. It's it's not ready for public consumption or knowledge, but it's it's it's happening. There's no doubt. speaker-0: Well, there you have it, folks. That is that concludes Nelson's top ten eighties action movies. I could have gone, I could have had some Chuck Norris stuff in here, but I I grew up watching Missing in Action One and Two, but they even as a kid, they really didn't do a whole lot for me. So yeah, you know, I'm not I'm just not this huge Chuck Norris person, so that's why that's not on here. So you know, I had to go with what I grew up, what I know. speaker-1: I speaker-0: And this is my jam right here. speaker-1: And I agree with all the choices other than ⁓ stakeout, the original stakeout. I've seen ⁓ all definitely. Maybe I've seen Stake Out and I just don't remember it. speaker-0: I think you have because I remember there's a scene where Madeline Stowe is in the shower and he's like dancing and he he wants to go in and get a peek and he like backs off and and I'm pretty sure you were texting me while you were watching it. I think you've seen it, you just Yeah, if you start watching it, it'll probably come back to you. speaker-1: I just don't remember it. Yeah, maybe so, maybe so. But I mean yeah, I can't can't argue with ⁓ with anything on the list, definitely. Done. That was a lot of fun. speaker-0: So well, hopefully we get some comments. Let me know what you guys think of the top eighties action movies and I'd love to hear it. speaker-1: Yeah, what's your favorites? What did we miss? speaker-0: What do we miss? So, all right. Well, like, subscribe, tell your friends, and we'll catch you on the next one. speaker-1: See ya.
