- 1:29Speaker 1: that coming up here in just a bit. Well, let's
- 1:32Speaker 1: be cap things right now. Where the Kraken ending a
- 1:35Speaker 1: homestand taking their first loss in regulation against San Jose
- 1:39Speaker 1: after they knocked off a pretty surprising Chicago team, following
- 1:43Speaker 1: that back to back games on the road where the
- 1:46Speaker 1: Kraken had to answer the bell, do it late, and
- 1:49Speaker 1: follow up very next day with the performance that kept
- 1:52Speaker 1: them in it in Dallas all the way to the end.
- 1:56Speaker 1: He'll bring it in everly since sto.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Jordan Everley his fifth goal the season, the Croocking get
- 2:12Speaker 4: that Insurman's goal back back up by a pair three one,
- 2:16Speaker 4: three fifty five left in the third.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Of Frank Dazar just loses the Pucket the center race
- 2:22Speaker 2: there and it's Jordan everbody that picks it up.
- 2:24Speaker 3: He's gonna two.
- 2:24Speaker 2: One zero with Toven and on his off wing, tells
- 2:27Speaker 2: that pass gets some of them.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Just a fight, just a fight.
- 2:31Speaker 2: A little bit, and beats him gloves side down low
- 2:34Speaker 2: three to one, cracking out, you're a chef to the line,
- 2:37Speaker 2: Lil tigrit good hold on to it.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Winterton on his backhand down the slot, right on and
- 2:43Speaker 4: turned aside by Ascar Rom Seattle keeps it back of
- 2:46Speaker 4: the line, lending grid shoots blocks winter.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Ten sto.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Ryan Winterton his first in the National Hockey League and
- 3:03Speaker 4: the Seattle.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Cracking on the board one one.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Three thirty left and period number one.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Well, it all starts with a breakaway by Winterton down
- 3:12Speaker 2: that left side, protects the puck, gets a great shot
- 3:15Speaker 2: on goal. But then he does what great wingers do.
- 3:18Speaker 2: He hangs out in the slot and weights not fuck,
- 3:20Speaker 2: finds its way back to him, gets it back onto
- 3:22Speaker 2: his sticks.
- 3:23Speaker 5: He beats asker rob This game is tied at one.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Look heard by the blue Seattle with some momentum tolding
- 3:29Speaker 6: it left side and it's stood.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Welcome back.
- 3:34Speaker 7: Riiker Evans.
- 3:35Speaker 4: A left point shot pinballs in by Hulfer let crack
- 3:40Speaker 4: it on the board two to one, eleven thirty two
- 3:43Speaker 4: left in this second period where you.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Set partner to cracking.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We're getting some momentum offensively right there, moving the puck around,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and Evans got that pucket just inside the blue line,
- 3:51Speaker 2: right in front of the cracking bench, got us met up.
- 3:53Speaker 2: He had Myers down in front, screening looking for a deflection.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Put it hard on net. It went off of something,
- 3:58Speaker 2: but I don't believe it was my even the back
- 4:01Speaker 2: of the net. Blocker side and Hope for two to
- 4:02Speaker 2: ones holding in right line.
- 4:04Speaker 4: It cross now done, shot, turn aside, cremound tolling. It scores,
- 4:10Speaker 4: Et phones home his first goal of the season, and
- 4:15Speaker 4: the kracking tie the game.
- 4:16Speaker 1: At two four thirty five.
- 4:19Speaker 7: Left in period number two.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Fantastic Pucket moving by the Cracking on their power play.
- 4:23Speaker 2: It starts with Stevenson over on the left boards feeding
- 4:26Speaker 2: it back to Done. Done gets a great shot on
- 4:28Speaker 2: goal one that Hopeer can't control. The rebound on that
- 4:31Speaker 2: rebound goes right to twenty on the wing.
- 4:34Speaker 1: He puts it in the back of the net.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Two years Montor left side activates down the wall. Montor
- 4:39Speaker 4: backhands shot toward the goal. Heavily swatted it live. Seattle
- 4:42Speaker 4: back to the line. Here Stevens says shots STOs tender
- 4:47Speaker 4: Stevenson point five left in the third. The Seattle kracking
- 4:52Speaker 4: tie the game three three late and period number three
- 4:57Speaker 4: fantastic offensives.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Don't keep by the crack there it was done. Who
- 5:01Speaker 2: got the puck over to Stevenson. Steven takes two strides
- 5:04Speaker 2: towards the top of the circle, beats Hofer blockers side.
- 5:08Speaker 1: This game's tide.
- 5:09Speaker 7: We're gonna go to hold it in far circle.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Shane Right on the hand off Shane Wright.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Walks it, shuts Scos. Shane Wright finds a lane down
- 5:22Speaker 4: the left side, tucks it in by Joel Hoefer. Seattle
- 5:26Speaker 4: takes this one four to three and.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Over time well he toven it and Shane Right up
- 5:31Speaker 2: at the top of the blue line chriss cross Tobyden
- 5:34Speaker 2: dropped it to him. Shane Right's got a full head
- 5:36Speaker 2: of steam going on that left side. He cuts to
- 5:39Speaker 2: the front of the end. He beats Hofer load four
- 5:41Speaker 2: three cracking.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Bring on the griff.
- 5:44Speaker 4: The foal Gigs wants the final kags four to three cracking.
- 5:47Speaker 7: Win based off left side. Seattle wins it. Schwartz to
- 5:49Speaker 7: the line.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Done here signed Adam Larsen shots ten scors. Adam Larson
- 5:58Speaker 4: from the right side, ripped it toward the goal, hit
- 6:03Speaker 4: something or someone in front. Jayden Schwartz will lead the
- 6:07Speaker 4: handshake line. It's a one nothing. See I don't crack
- 6:11Speaker 4: and lead well.
- 6:11Speaker 2: It starts with a face off winning the offensive end
- 6:13Speaker 2: of the ice. Maddy Benier is getting that puck back.
- 6:16Speaker 7: It goes over to.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Adam Larsen to his head up hard wrist shut on
- 6:19Speaker 2: the ice that Jaden Schwartz gets a piece of beats
- 6:22Speaker 2: Casey the Smith top shelf glove side one nothing cracking.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Shane Wright back to the line. Wyatt Johnston steals it away.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Johnston to Rantnan, Ranton in down the slot back to
- 6:32Speaker 4: Johnston side. But Matt Murray, Oh, Matt Murray in the splits.
- 6:39Speaker 4: He had Rantnan coming down the far side of the
- 6:42Speaker 4: slot and he was able to get over and knock
- 6:45Speaker 4: that puck down.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Ye I sold out moving left to right and just
- 6:48Speaker 2: took away.
- 6:48Speaker 3: The right side.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Here's Mark Smtt far wing blue line. Doun kept it
- 6:52Speaker 4: in Mark Smitt left side. Now Benier's Montor Fires turned
- 6:56Speaker 4: aside by Casey. This man drowne down the ice and
- 7:00Speaker 4: then bouncing a puck to the near corner. Iicing gets
- 7:03Speaker 4: waved off ten seconds to play. In the third montur
- 7:07Speaker 4: phuck the far side, Vince dun knocks it down. Shane right,
- 7:10Speaker 4: do the nut shot that one. Just wine cocko cocko
- 7:14Speaker 4: in the corner, China Center, just on the raach Love.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Fence, Ton and there is your final horn.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Two wins, two losses, the Krack and knocking off Chicago
- 7:25Speaker 1: and Saint Louis and taking losses against the San Jose
- 7:29Speaker 1: Sharks and the Dallas Stars. Amidst all that, Ryan Winterton
- 7:32Speaker 1: picking up his first career NHL goal with the Crack
- 7:35Speaker 1: and maybe getting a bigger glimpse of the kind of
- 7:38Speaker 1: game that they can play to be successful, at least
- 7:41Speaker 1: hanging around in games right now like the one they
- 7:44Speaker 1: had on Sunday against Dallas. All right, that's hout of
- 7:47Speaker 1: the week, shakes out after what was a game so
- 7:50Speaker 1: close on Sunday, the Krack and though falling to one
- 7:52Speaker 1: of the Dallas Stars. And they come back home where
- 7:55Speaker 1: home has been very very good to them. And among
- 7:58Speaker 1: the games for you to consider this Tuesday. Coming up
- 8:02Speaker 1: Tomorrow night Military Appreciation Night presented by Starbucks. Every special
- 8:06Speaker 1: ticket offer purchase comes with a limited addition cracking bucket,
- 8:10Speaker 1: hat and donation to the Fisher House. Additionally, on Saturday,

- 8:27Speaker 1: evera fits you, Alciniski joining us now for the roundtable
- 8:30Speaker 1: segment of this for Cracking Weekly Fellas. I hope we
- 8:34Speaker 1: got our good sleep from last night coming off the plane,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and today was at least a day of productivity, if
- 8:42Speaker 1: you want to call it productivity, the one off day
- 8:45Speaker 1: we have in between here to get stuff done. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: think I got the oil change done. I got the
- 8:51Speaker 1: soup picked up with the dry cleaners. I have a
- 8:54Speaker 1: speaking engagement for a ZEUSA Pacific coming up, and we'll
- 8:57Speaker 1: see if there is time here for a haircut. How's
- 8:59Speaker 1: your Monday going?
- 9:00Speaker 7: Not bad? I got it.
- 9:01Speaker 6: I got a couple of chores that I gotta finish
- 9:04Speaker 6: getting done. I was a little bit late on and
- 9:06Speaker 6: I sincerely apologize for that to my wife and do
- 9:09Speaker 6: everyone out there, But no, so far, so good.
- 9:13Speaker 8: I came home to a kitchen full of coolers and
- 9:16Speaker 8: freezer bags because I have a fridge that is no
- 9:18Speaker 8: longer in order, but got to get twenty one years
- 9:21Speaker 8: out of it, so I can't.
- 9:22Speaker 6: Oh no, wow, oh no, that fridge owes you nothing.
- 9:27Speaker 8: That's right, that's right. I thanked it, I you know,
- 9:31Speaker 8: gave it a pound on the back, and we're going
- 9:33Speaker 8: to put it out the pasture.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Hey, sales crew, fridge fridge endorsement. Al Konski's right for one.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Let's go. Let's go. All right, Well, where where where
- 9:44Speaker 1: were we? The Kraken have lost four out of the
- 9:46Speaker 1: last six games. But I mean, Fellas, I really think
- 9:48Speaker 1: context matters in this situation. I mean, coming out of
- 9:52Speaker 1: this back to back and we knew this was going
- 9:56Speaker 1: to be a massive talking point for the direction of
- 9:59Speaker 1: this sea. You face, Saint Louis, you were this close
- 10:04Speaker 1: to take in defeat and then rescue it from the
- 10:07Speaker 1: jaws of defeat, and then comes so close where to
- 10:10Speaker 1: the point you maybe got goal lead against Dallas and
- 10:15Speaker 1: with that a one and one split coming home. So
- 10:19Speaker 1: here's some food for thought on this and I want
- 10:22Speaker 1: to be careful because moral victories don't get your points.
- 10:25Speaker 1: But weigh in the scope of this weekend and this
- 10:27Speaker 1: happening now than say, versus in March. Would you rather
- 10:31Speaker 1: take a two and a weekend back to back yet
- 10:34Speaker 1: you're playing poorly, or rather are you taking one in
- 10:37Speaker 1: one and come out with a kind of effort they
- 10:40Speaker 1: got against Saint Louis and Dallas now coming home.
- 10:45Speaker 6: Well, Mike, first of all, you say they've lost four
- 10:47Speaker 6: of six. I say they have points in four of six.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Perspective perspective matters.
- 10:51Speaker 6: Yeah, let's pert perspective for a second. I think I
- 10:55Speaker 6: understand the question that you're asking. But at the end
- 10:58Speaker 6: of the day, this is a result the business. I'd
- 11:00Speaker 6: rather have two bad wins than two perfect one nothing
- 11:06Speaker 6: losses or two to one losses.
- 11:08Speaker 7: You know, I do think that everything considered in back
- 11:13Speaker 7: to backs.
- 11:14Speaker 6: I mean that was the game against Dallas on Sunday.
- 11:17Speaker 6: I mean we're going on a year plus of the
- 11:20Speaker 6: losses in game twos of back to backs, and I
- 11:24Speaker 6: don't remember an effort ever like that in the second
- 11:27Speaker 6: game of a back to back. And I guess maybe
- 11:30Speaker 6: there's a little bit of solace there, even though you
- 11:32Speaker 6: didn't get the point from what we were told getting
- 11:36Speaker 6: on the bus and getting on the plane like that.
- 11:39Speaker 6: The team was very quiet and very somber after that
- 11:44Speaker 6: Dallas game, which I liked hearing because it lets me
- 11:50Speaker 6: know that they knew that they should have won that game.
- 11:53Speaker 6: They're not comfortable with just playing well. They want the
- 11:56Speaker 6: results too, So it was kind of a quiet flight
- 12:00Speaker 6: outside of a couple of small conversations and the obligatory
- 12:04Speaker 6: card game in the back. But I think guys realize that,
- 12:08Speaker 6: you know, the new standard is being set here in Seattle.
- 12:12Speaker 6: I think overall, for for what this team is and
- 12:15Speaker 6: where this team is, I would.
- 12:17Speaker 7: Say it's a successful weekend.
- 12:18Speaker 6: But to go back to the initial question, I would
- 12:21Speaker 6: have loved to have found a way to get one
- 12:24Speaker 6: point out of last night. I mean that that would
- 12:27Speaker 6: have just made it so much better. And I think
- 12:30Speaker 6: that's where the frustration lies.
- 12:32Speaker 2: I think going into the weekend, you know, we before
- 12:35Speaker 2: we get the news about Joey Decord, I think our
- 12:38Speaker 2: thoughts were, Okay, well, we've got these other two goaltenders.
- 12:41Speaker 2: They've got to play some games soon. Could it be
- 12:43Speaker 2: this weekend?
- 12:44Speaker 8: And then of course you get the news, you immediately assume, okay,
- 12:46Speaker 8: they're each going to get a game.
- 12:48Speaker 3: So despite the outcome.
- 12:50Speaker 8: Of the games, I think you can check a box
- 12:52Speaker 8: now that says you've seen Philip Gribauer and Matt Murray
- 12:55Speaker 8: both start games. Matt Murray with a nine percentage last
- 13:00Speaker 8: night and Grubauer with eight four to two in his
- 13:03Speaker 8: games or his game, both both of them playing well.
- 13:06Speaker 8: So I think we got the benefit of seeing both
- 13:10Speaker 8: of them this weekend because of the Joey to coord injury.
- 13:13Speaker 8: So I think that was good. I agree with Everett
- 13:15Speaker 8: that the effort that was put out in the Dallas
- 13:19Speaker 8: loss was I think the best effort in a second
- 13:22Speaker 8: of a back to back of all of the back
- 13:25Speaker 8: to backs we've seen since his team won a back
- 13:27Speaker 8: to back. So the effort was strong enough to win
- 13:30Speaker 8: the game, that the effort was strong enough to take
- 13:31Speaker 8: it to overtime. Unfortunately, as you say, Mikey, you got
- 13:34Speaker 8: goalie a little bit there. So I come out of
- 13:37Speaker 8: it with I'm happy that if you're going to lose,
- 13:40Speaker 8: you're gonna lose. Laying all your cards on the table,
- 13:43Speaker 8: and the guy certainly did last night.
- 13:44Speaker 1: See I brought this up on the other night here,
- 13:46Speaker 1: and we're noticing something maybe as far as period one
- 13:50Speaker 1: versus period two and period three. Everett, you talked about
- 13:53Speaker 1: this with Lane Lambert in your pregame conversation. But we're
- 13:56Speaker 1: sensing a pattern here, and I brought this up in
- 13:58Speaker 1: pregame coverage period two, period three. Previous four games combined,
- 14:03Speaker 1: the Crack can have allowed only twelve shots average twelve
- 14:07Speaker 1: shots period, period two, period three against Dallas the previous
- 14:12Speaker 1: night Stars seven shots in period two, seven shots in
- 14:17Speaker 1: period three. Guys are sensing a pattern as far as
- 14:19Speaker 1: how this team starts versus how things progress.
- 14:22Speaker 8: Well, I think the pattern is this team's down after
- 14:24Speaker 8: the first period in three of those four games. So
- 14:27Speaker 8: maybe the wake up call happens between the first and
- 14:30Speaker 8: second period and they come out guns of blazing in
- 14:32Speaker 8: that second. So you'd like to see that happen in
- 14:34Speaker 8: the first. But again, I think it's the it's the
- 14:40Speaker 8: identity of this team that they know that they can
- 14:43Speaker 8: play with any team.
- 14:44Speaker 3: In this league.
- 14:45Speaker 8: We've seen it already with some of the top teams,
- 14:48Speaker 8: and we saw it again last night despite the.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Eleven to one one record.
- 14:53Speaker 8: I think that the Krack can have with Dallas over
- 14:55Speaker 8: the last thirteen that the effort was strong enough to
- 14:58Speaker 8: be to be in the mix potentially come up with
- 15:00Speaker 8: a point.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Un firstly they didn't.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I think so, and I am sensing a pattern.
- 15:06Speaker 6: You know, the team does.
- 15:07Speaker 7: Get better as games go along.
- 15:10Speaker 6: But I think with that with that same shot comparison,
- 15:13Speaker 6: they're allowing fewer shots, but they're also getting fewer shots
- 15:18Speaker 6: as well in third periods. And I think in more
- 15:21Speaker 6: more games that I had it written down, I think
- 15:24Speaker 6: five times this season now six times this season, the
- 15:28Speaker 6: Cracking have been limited to single digit shots in the
- 15:31Speaker 6: third period and they've had to they've had to survive
- 15:35Speaker 6: a push, and they've they've gone into you know, kind
- 15:38Speaker 6: of a I don't want to say a prevent defense
- 15:40Speaker 6: because they're not sitting back. They're still aggressive defensively, but
- 15:45Speaker 6: you know, you'd like to maybe see a little bit
- 15:47Speaker 6: more offensive push in the third period.
- 15:51Speaker 7: And I understand that.
- 15:53Speaker 6: You know, I'm going to contradict myself here because we
- 15:55Speaker 6: always say you only have to.
- 15:56Speaker 7: Win by one.
- 15:57Speaker 6: I get it, but if it's two to one or
- 15:59Speaker 6: three two going into the third, it would be nice
- 16:03Speaker 6: to find a way to maybe get an insurance goal
- 16:07Speaker 6: or put yourself ahead, give you a little bit more
- 16:09Speaker 6: breathing room, take some pressure off your goalies.
- 16:11Speaker 7: But this team, I do think.
- 16:13Speaker 6: Overall, has had a habit of getting better and playing
- 16:19Speaker 6: better as games have gone on.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Absolutely, And I bring this up here to you as
- 16:23Speaker 1: well because this is something important to talk about because
- 16:25Speaker 1: there's a way to manufacture offense, and then there's a
- 16:28Speaker 1: way to try to maybe I think go as far
- 16:30Speaker 1: as forcing offense. And there's a difference here because how
- 16:34Speaker 1: do you look at if you're down, what you need
- 16:38Speaker 1: to do to find ways to generate versus say cheating
- 16:43Speaker 1: flying the zone and now you're leaving your own defense
- 16:45Speaker 1: and structure at risk.
- 16:47Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's not doing what you just said.
- 16:50Speaker 3: They're flying the zone.
- 16:51Speaker 8: But I think this team is doing a better job
- 16:54Speaker 8: of controlling the play with the puck. You see it
- 16:58Speaker 8: in the Afterton zone when they get some sustained offensive
- 17:01Speaker 8: zone time. We will start to see players changing out
- 17:04Speaker 8: one at a time to be able to get five
- 17:06Speaker 8: fresh on the ice while they've got control. You see
- 17:09Speaker 8: it in the neutral zone when they need to make
- 17:12Speaker 8: a change and rather than dumping the puck into the
- 17:14Speaker 8: offensive zone or putting a puck on net just to
- 17:16Speaker 8: get a shot on goal. They'll move it back to
- 17:18Speaker 8: their defenseman. They'll change out those three forwards and then
- 17:22Speaker 8: they'll come down the ice at the defense wan will
- 17:24Speaker 8: change you got five. So that puck control is a
- 17:26Speaker 8: big factor in being intentional about their offensive chances this year,
- 17:32Speaker 8: which you didn't see as much last year. It was
- 17:34Speaker 8: just go to earth and off they went, and they
- 17:36Speaker 8: attacked and it was exciting and sometimes they work and
- 17:38Speaker 8: sometimes it didn't. This year it seems to be a
- 17:41Speaker 8: little bit more of a controlled approach, and I think
- 17:44Speaker 8: that controlled approach can sometimes lead its way into okay, well,
- 17:48Speaker 8: let's look for the perfect shot on net as well.
- 17:51Speaker 8: I think it's finding that balance between that perfect play,
- 17:53Speaker 8: that perfect shot, and then also sometimes like the goal
- 17:57Speaker 8: last night, Ad Marshall just fired at hard on the
- 17:59Speaker 8: net works is flashing through redirection. It's one nothing, cracking
- 18:04Speaker 8: piggybacking on that.
- 18:05Speaker 6: That's huge because I think too, right, especially against a
- 18:09Speaker 6: guy like Casey to Smith, you know, who was just
- 18:12Speaker 6: money lights out last night.
- 18:14Speaker 7: I look at the Connor Hellibooks of the world.
- 18:16Speaker 6: I look at Dan Vladar of all people, right, the
- 18:19Speaker 6: guys who who've had our numbers goalies that you have
- 18:23Speaker 6: to put up, you know, a lot of shots against
- 18:26Speaker 6: just to get one or two goals. I think it
- 18:29Speaker 6: is having a shot first mentality. You don't need the
- 18:33Speaker 6: right shot, you don't need a perfect shot. I think
- 18:36Speaker 6: you just need to get shots through. And I think
- 18:39Speaker 6: both teams last night didn't show any signs of fatigue.
- 18:43Speaker 6: You know, Al said during one of the breaks, you know,
- 18:46Speaker 6: dare I say this is a playoff atmosphere.
- 18:48Speaker 7: I was like, I know it was.
- 18:50Speaker 6: It was like easy there, cheap roly in game was
- 18:54Speaker 6: it game third fifteen?
- 18:56Speaker 3: But that's what the pace felt like.
- 18:57Speaker 6: The pace did feel like a playoff atmosphere. But no,
- 19:02Speaker 6: I think you're beg on I about the shot selection
- 19:06Speaker 6: and about this team sometimes being a little bit too choosy.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I want to go back to the Saint Louis game
- 19:10Speaker 1: because this is where victory was made possible when Chandler
- 19:14Speaker 1: Stevenson scored with zero point five seconds on the clock. Guys,
- 19:19Speaker 1: this is where we had to give props to broadcasters,
- 19:22Speaker 1: especially like you, to be able to contain yourselves, to
- 19:25Speaker 1: just describe what happened in incredible fashion, to tie that
- 19:29Speaker 1: game because it was the latest goal in cracking history
- 19:32Speaker 1: to tie a game. That being said, NetFront presence also ed,
- 19:37Speaker 1: z oh, yes, we gave your props right there made
- 19:40Speaker 1: this thing happen. Jordan Eberley was at the front of
- 19:42Speaker 1: the net checking social media. It was a firestorm for
- 19:47Speaker 1: everyone arguing for or against goal tender air interference. The
- 19:52Speaker 1: caller from the situation room stands. As this video review confirmed,
- 19:57Speaker 1: Jordan Eberley and his actions did not impair Joel Hofer's
- 20:01Speaker 1: ability to play his position in the crease. Hoefer came
- 20:06Speaker 1: way out as far as you could get, maybe to
- 20:08Speaker 1: that red line outside of the blue paint. And of
- 20:12Speaker 1: course in the final minute of play in period three,
- 20:14Speaker 1: at any point in overtime as well regular season in playoffs,
- 20:18Speaker 1: hockey operations will initiate the review of any situation that
- 20:23Speaker 1: would otherwise be subject to a coach's challenge. This is
- 20:27Speaker 1: where Toronto comes into play. But guys, the moral of
- 20:30Speaker 1: the story of this is getting very close down to
- 20:33Speaker 1: the point where I'm tired of trying to break down
- 20:37Speaker 1: goalie interference. It is so subjective and it feels like
- 20:41Speaker 1: one call that goes your way today may go the
- 20:45Speaker 1: other way the very next day.
- 20:46Speaker 6: Listen, I was JT and we JT and we were
- 20:51Speaker 6: talking about this after after the game, and you know,
- 20:55Speaker 6: if we're gonna call balls and strikes, I could have
- 20:58Speaker 6: gone either way on that.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Clearly happy that it went the Krakens way.
- 21:03Speaker 6: But listen the goaltend your interference rule, it's it's so gray.
- 21:09Speaker 7: It's such a gray area. And Alan and I were
- 21:11Speaker 7: talking about this, you.
- 21:12Speaker 6: Know, how do you effectively determine goalie interference? And my idea,
- 21:20Speaker 6: I don't care if you have your left pinky toe
- 21:23Speaker 6: in the crease. If any part of the goalie is
- 21:26Speaker 6: in the crease and you touch the goalie without being
- 21:29Speaker 6: pushed by an opposing player, then that's interference. Boba played dead,
- 21:33Speaker 6: it's a penalty or something. But no, I think that
- 21:38Speaker 6: I see both sides of that play. You know, it
- 21:41Speaker 6: was already on that side. I don't think it. I
- 21:43Speaker 6: don't I don't think, in my opinion, I don't think
- 21:46Speaker 6: that Everly was there to It didn't disrupt the play
- 21:52Speaker 6: at all.
- 21:52Speaker 7: I thought the puck was clearly on its.
- 21:54Speaker 6: Way in before Everily even had a chance to get
- 21:56Speaker 6: the stick there. It wasn't like he was he was,
- 21:59Speaker 6: The shot was lowder, the ice was over the shoulder, right,
- 22:02Speaker 6: So I see it.
- 22:03Speaker 7: But no, I'm with you. The goaltender interference conversation.
- 22:06Speaker 6: We can spend an entire show talking about what is
- 22:10Speaker 6: or what isn't goalie.
- 22:11Speaker 7: Interference, But it was. It was one that went the
- 22:14Speaker 7: other way.
- 22:15Speaker 6: But I guarantee you twenty games from now, that same
- 22:18Speaker 6: thing's going to happen, and it's going to go against
- 22:20Speaker 6: the Kraken and we're going to be on here spitting
- 22:23Speaker 6: firestone for the exact same reason.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Well not only that.
- 22:27Speaker 8: Too, but you know, we have the benefit of seeing
- 22:29Speaker 8: the slow mow replace And when you look at the
- 22:32Speaker 8: overhead cam of that shot, everybody's got his back to
- 22:36Speaker 8: the goal and he spins around, I think, to get
- 22:39Speaker 8: out of the way of the shot, like he had
- 22:42Speaker 8: nothing to do with. Maybe I'll clip the goalie stick
- 22:45Speaker 8: and try and interfere with him. It wasn't that it
- 22:48Speaker 8: was spinning around. And to be able to catch the
- 22:51Speaker 8: inside of your heel on the toe of the blade
- 22:54Speaker 8: of the goaltender stick, that that's unintentional contact. Yes, you
- 22:59Speaker 8: know when you see top and you see gloves and
- 23:01Speaker 8: pushes and shoulders and that's a very different situation. Doesn't
- 23:05Speaker 8: mean it wouldn't be called. I still think it was
- 23:07Speaker 8: a fifty to fifty call. But when you look at
- 23:09Speaker 8: that and you say was it intentional?
- 23:11Speaker 3: No?
- 23:11Speaker 8: Was he trying to get out of the way, Yes,
- 23:13Speaker 8: I think that had a lot to do with how
- 23:15Speaker 8: they ended up calling it a goal.
- 23:16Speaker 1: And listen, we will gladly explain goals under interference each
- 23:19Speaker 1: and every day. We're trying to course educate new hockey
- 23:22Speaker 1: fans here. But folks, again, this is the most subjective
- 23:25Speaker 1: rule in the rule book here. Let's just get this
- 23:27Speaker 1: one thing clear.
- 23:29Speaker 7: Like I said, listen, you're a goalie.
- 23:32Speaker 6: You put any any part of your body is touching
- 23:35Speaker 6: the blue paint, black and white.
- 23:37Speaker 7: Blow it dead, don't care.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Move on.
- 23:39Speaker 7: I'm tired of all these ten.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Minute reviews in game twenty of the season that don't matter.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Just what I'm going to fix it, Just take it
- 23:47Speaker 3: all out. There is no goal out right.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Hey, listen, we can only hear tell me something good
- 23:53Speaker 1: on loop over and over and over. When it gets
- 23:57Speaker 1: to be like the third like loop of the song,
- 23:59Speaker 1: we know what's going on too long? Now, that's not
- 24:07Speaker 1: Why don't we talk about Berkeley Catton, who is now
- 24:10Speaker 1: here for ten games, and we presume, going on now
- 24:13Speaker 1: eleven the first year of his contract officially has kicked
- 24:16Speaker 1: in which many people now presume, Okay, he's good to
- 24:20Speaker 1: go now, Well, not so fast yet, we're gonna hear
- 24:23Speaker 1: that confirmation maybe maybe not here, whether he has been
- 24:27Speaker 1: told to go officially get an apartment now. There is
- 24:31Speaker 1: still more of a chance here to give him an
- 24:34Speaker 1: AHL conditioning stint where he could get more playing time,
- 24:38Speaker 1: play further up the lineup consistently, and then also the
- 24:42Speaker 1: World Juniors right around the corner for him. But what
- 24:47Speaker 1: have we learned about about Berkeley Catton so far through
- 24:49Speaker 1: ten games, and maybe how long he could be staying
- 24:53Speaker 1: here added to where he fits in this lineup?
- 24:56Speaker 6: I think for me, you know, it goes back to
- 24:59Speaker 6: what we said last week, and I don't think my
- 25:01Speaker 6: position has changed. I think that he has shown that
- 25:05Speaker 6: he can play in this league. You know, now again,
- 25:10Speaker 6: am I ready to put him on my top line
- 25:12Speaker 6: eighty two nights a year?
- 25:13Speaker 7: Probably not, But I.
- 25:14Speaker 6: Mean he he has earned a place in the lineup
- 25:18Speaker 6: wherever that place is in the lineup. I still think
- 25:22Speaker 6: that every game we see another good piece of his game.
- 25:29Speaker 6: We see another step taken in terms of his maturation
- 25:33Speaker 6: to becoming you know, an NHL.
- 25:37Speaker 7: You know, a good NHL player.
- 25:40Speaker 6: And I don't think there's been any glaring holes, at
- 25:44Speaker 6: least for me in his game outside of the typical
- 25:48Speaker 6: nineteen year old mistakes that he's going to make. Having
- 25:51Speaker 6: played only ten games in the NHL. I'm not gonna.
- 25:54Speaker 6: I'm not gonna to harp and kill the kid because
- 25:58Speaker 6: he serves up a pizza through the middle that would
- 26:00Speaker 6: have easily gotten through in juniors. Right, You're still trying
- 26:03Speaker 6: to learn this game, You're trying to learn the speed.
- 26:06Speaker 6: So I don't have any problem with it. I think
- 26:08Speaker 6: I like him here, and you're right, you get him
- 26:11Speaker 6: the World Juniors. But just because he goes to World
- 26:13Speaker 6: Juniors doesn't mean that you can't get him back. He
- 26:18Speaker 6: can go to World Juniors and then come back here.
- 26:20Speaker 6: He doesn't always have to go back to Spokane. But
- 26:23Speaker 6: I think that that he's fine here. He's playing well,
- 26:27Speaker 6: and until I think there is there is an obvious
- 26:31Speaker 6: gap or an obvious drop off in his game, I mean,
- 26:35Speaker 6: keep sending him out there.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Alt this up for you in just the fact that
- 26:41Speaker 1: he was on the ice for Chandler Stevenson's game tying goal.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Now you earn the trust of Lane Lambert, who you
- 26:50Speaker 1: got to earn a lot of trust in those key situations.
- 26:53Speaker 1: That says a lot. Where Berkeley Catton is getting high
- 26:56Speaker 1: leverage ice time to go out there for a game
- 26:59Speaker 1: tying goal.
- 27:00Speaker 8: Well, not only was he out there for that game
- 27:02Speaker 8: time goal in Saint Louis, he was out there in
- 27:04Speaker 8: the last couple of minutes of the Dallas game as well.
- 27:06Speaker 8: So clearly Lane Lambert believes this is a guy that
- 27:09Speaker 8: could be a difference maker when you're when you're looking
- 27:11Speaker 8: for a goal late in the game. But Mike, your
- 27:13Speaker 8: question was, what have we learned about Berkeley Catton. Well,
- 27:16Speaker 8: we already knew he was a fantastic hockey player. We
- 27:19Speaker 8: already knew he was worthy of of of the pick
- 27:22Speaker 8: that the Kracken made in the in the in the
- 27:23Speaker 8: first round for him.
- 27:25Speaker 3: I think what we're.
- 27:26Speaker 8: Learning is that as good as he is, he's still
- 27:29Speaker 8: got some growing, some growth He's got to grow into
- 27:32Speaker 8: becoming an NHL player. Well, you can't do that in Spokane.
- 27:36Speaker 8: You probably can't even do that at World Juniors. As
- 27:39Speaker 8: the lead as that hockey is, you've got to play.
- 27:41Speaker 8: And I think that's why we're going to see him
- 27:43Speaker 8: here for the majority of the rest of the season.
- 27:45Speaker 6: And I will I'll say this too, you know, I
- 27:48Speaker 6: think we're all we're all acting like World Juniors is
- 27:52Speaker 6: a foregone conclusion.
- 27:54Speaker 7: The Kraken control.
- 27:58Speaker 6: Ye wait, right, so Berkeley Catton because of he's earned
- 28:03Speaker 6: it or because of injuries and they have no choice
- 28:06Speaker 6: but to play him every night. We get to World
- 28:09Speaker 6: Juniors and Berkeley Catton has played thirty games? How many
- 28:12Speaker 6: games we have left to the Worlds?
- 28:13Speaker 7: Right?
- 28:13Speaker 5: Like?
- 28:14Speaker 6: I mean, if I'm the Kraken, am I like? Do
- 28:17Speaker 6: I really want to send him to Worlds.
- 28:20Speaker 7: For four weeks and do all that?
- 28:22Speaker 6: Look at what happened to Matthew Shaeffer last year, right,
- 28:25Speaker 6: kid breaks his leg and he's out.
- 28:26Speaker 1: For uh, we don't know how long. Jared McCann's gonna
- 28:29Speaker 1: be out, and Freddi Goodrou is still quite a ways away.
- 28:33Speaker 6: Absolutely, so I think that we're sitting here thinking that
- 28:37Speaker 6: World Juniors is a foregone conclusion. I think the Kraken
- 28:41Speaker 6: would like to give him that opportunity. I think he
- 28:44Speaker 6: would like that opportunity. But you know, there's no guarantee
- 28:48Speaker 6: that Berkeley Catton is gonna be playing in Worlds this December.
- 28:53Speaker 6: They could say, hey, kid, we need you here, and
- 28:56Speaker 6: we only have four days off for Christmas. Go home,
- 28:59Speaker 6: take a break, get your books in town, do something.
- 29:02Speaker 6: Uh but but we need you ready for for games
- 29:05Speaker 6: in January.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Here's one guy the crack and would love to really
- 29:08Speaker 1: get going, but he showed some pretty impressive signs that
- 29:12Speaker 1: he's perhaps getting it in gear. And that's Mason Marchman
- 29:15Speaker 1: against Dallas from the other night. And here's Mason march
- 29:18Speaker 1: Mitt and his reaction after the game meeting with the media.
- 29:21Speaker 9: Good to get the you know, some juices going again
- 29:24Speaker 9: and you know, you know, maybe prove them wrong or whatever.
- 29:30Speaker 9: But uh yeah, just I thought our team played a
- 29:34Speaker 9: good game, and we competed all night and Murray played
- 29:37Speaker 9: awesome probably huge save, so you know it's a tough loss,
- 29:42Speaker 9: but uh, you know we can build off that for sure.
- 29:49Speaker 6: What's up?
- 29:50Speaker 7: Did you think you might have had one time goal there?
- 29:53Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 29:53Speaker 9: Yeah, I just tried to get it off quick and
- 29:55Speaker 9: low and uh fivefole and he came across his legs closed,
- 29:59Speaker 9: so it was a great say by case Sar.
- 30:02Speaker 1: So it was pretty apparent that Mason Marchmant was very,
- 30:06Speaker 1: very motivated to face his former team. He told us
- 30:09Speaker 1: he had this date circle on the calendar way back
- 30:12Speaker 1: in the preseason at media Day. But one goal right
- 30:15Speaker 1: now in fourteen games. How what can we take away
- 30:19Speaker 1: from the Dallas game that Mason Marchmant needs more of
- 30:22Speaker 1: consistently here moving ahead?
- 30:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think we saw his best game
- 30:27Speaker 3: to date. Hands down. We saw what I think.
- 30:31Speaker 8: The Kraken expect to get out of Mason Marshmot. He
- 30:34Speaker 8: had four hits in the game, He had four shots
- 30:36Speaker 8: on goal. You heard of him talking about that opportunity
- 30:39Speaker 8: to get one there. He was involved during the play,
- 30:42Speaker 8: he was involved after the play. He was getting in
- 30:45Speaker 8: guys faces, like without taking penalties. I think that's the
- 30:49Speaker 8: sand papery Mason Marchman. It was some offensive power guy
- 30:53Speaker 8: that we're looking to see every game going forward.
- 30:56Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think for me, you know, not trying
- 30:59Speaker 6: to go uh full Bob Staffer here.
- 31:01Speaker 7: For the Edmonton Oilers.
- 31:02Speaker 6: And if you don't know what I'm talking about, go
- 31:04Speaker 6: on the Oilers Daily onto Yeah, find Bob.
- 31:08Speaker 7: Just search Bob Stoffer.
- 31:09Speaker 1: He burned my phone up by the way, trying to
- 31:11Speaker 1: listen to that. Yeah, I need a new phone now.
- 31:14Speaker 6: So not trying to go full Bob Stoffer, but I
- 31:17Speaker 6: think we've seen that he's capable of playing at this level,
- 31:21Speaker 6: like Al said, and I think that, you know, if
- 31:23Speaker 6: I'm being honest, I felt like, you know, he's got
- 31:26Speaker 6: he's got more to give, right, And we saw what
- 31:29Speaker 6: he can do and what he's capable of, and I'm
- 31:32Speaker 6: with you, that was his best game to date for
- 31:34Speaker 6: the cracket this year.
- 31:35Speaker 7: So I think if if we can see him continue.
- 31:38Speaker 6: To play that way, you know, being hard, going to
- 31:41Speaker 6: the dirty areas and not you know, not not scoring
- 31:46Speaker 6: and and and contributing to the offense, I think you're
- 31:48Speaker 6: gonna you have a good player in Mason Marshman. And
- 31:51Speaker 6: I'm hoping that that game unlocked a big piece of
- 31:55Speaker 6: his game moving forward.
- 31:57Speaker 1: We have the home stand coming up here where are
- 31:59Speaker 1: the Crack and we'll face a Columbus Blue Jackets tomorrow night,
- 32:01Speaker 1: Winnipeg's second matchup of the season San Jose as well
- 32:05Speaker 1: on Saturday, and we're gonna hear from Dan Ruzanowski in
- 32:07Speaker 1: our conversation in just a little bit of course, long
- 32:10Speaker 1: time Hall of Fame radio voice for the Sharks on
- 32:13Speaker 1: that side. But if there's one thing I think we
- 32:15Speaker 1: learned again we touched on this earlier from last home stand,
- 32:18Speaker 1: applied for this homestand the Kraken back home in their
- 32:22Speaker 1: own home building in front of a very very boisterous crowd.
- 32:25Speaker 1: You've got to start fast.
- 32:27Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I think I think that's that's gonna be key.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:32Speaker 6: The Kraken finally won a game this season when they've
- 32:35Speaker 6: allowed the game's first goal, so scoring first is key
- 32:40Speaker 6: for Seattle. They got the four to three overtime win
- 32:42Speaker 6: in Saint Louis and that was their first win of
- 32:44Speaker 6: the season, win trailing, you know, won nothing, So you.
- 32:48Speaker 7: Have to start fast.
- 32:49Speaker 6: The schedule for the kracking, you know, we talked about
- 32:52Speaker 6: how it's a lot easier in uh in November rather
- 32:59Speaker 6: than then maybe it will in October.
- 33:00Speaker 7: But you're getting to.
- 33:02Speaker 6: A pretty difficult portion of the schedule coming up.
- 33:06Speaker 7: You know, You've got this this homestand.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Now you go on the road for four games out
- 33:10Speaker 6: East against you know, competition that are I would say,
- 33:14Speaker 6: in the same sandbox as you. But then you come
- 33:17Speaker 6: back home, and you've got a couple against Edmonton. You've
- 33:21Speaker 6: got I want to say, Utah's in there, la Anaheim
- 33:25Speaker 6: are in there. I think there's a Vancouver in there.
- 33:28Speaker 6: Maybe all of those games coming up before Christmas. So
- 33:32Speaker 6: you've got some pretty big games coming up before the
- 33:35Speaker 6: Christmas break. So over these next four weeks three weeks,
- 33:39Speaker 6: you want to try to bank as many of these
- 33:41Speaker 6: points as possible and starting fast. Winning your home games
- 33:44Speaker 6: are going to be a pretty you know, good good
- 33:46Speaker 6: way to do that.
- 33:47Speaker 8: Yeah, And I think that you see above, the play
- 33:50Speaker 8: of Mason Marshman can factor into that. I think that
- 33:53Speaker 8: what we talked about with goaltending. If we're not going
- 33:56Speaker 8: to see Joey Decord for a while, we don't know,
- 33:58Speaker 8: But if we're not, then the way Matt Murray played
- 34:02Speaker 8: last night and the way Grubauer played, I think that's
- 34:05Speaker 8: going to factor into the success as team can have
- 34:07Speaker 8: between now and Christmas.
- 34:10Speaker 1: All right to the Beacon Plumbing Hotline, we go. Always
- 34:13Speaker 1: a pleasure to have him with us. Hall of Fame
- 34:15Speaker 1: radio voice Dan Ruzanowski of the Sharks Audio Network. Dan,
- 34:20Speaker 1: good to see you a few days ago back here
- 34:22Speaker 1: in Seattle. Looking forward to the next one already here.
- 34:24Speaker 1: But I want to first begin just from the first
- 34:27Speaker 1: time that these two teams met. What surprised you most
- 34:31Speaker 1: may be about the Sharks start here to this season.
- 34:35Speaker 5: Well, I think that it's taken a little while for
- 34:38Speaker 5: all things to start to piece together. I think that's
- 34:40Speaker 5: been part of the story, and we have to keep
- 34:42Speaker 5: reminding ourselves how many different players are on the roster,
- 34:46Speaker 5: and that probably led to the somewhat slow beginning. It
- 34:49Speaker 5: was getting a little bit tiresome in San Jose, simply
- 34:52Speaker 5: because the last three years it's been really tough in
- 34:54Speaker 5: the month of October, and so there was a kind
- 34:57Speaker 5: of a feeling of, oh no, here we go again.
- 35:00Speaker 5: Very very quickly things started to dissipate in that direction.
- 35:03Speaker 5: The Sharks started to, you know, show what they are
- 35:06Speaker 5: made of. And I think that they're only right now
- 35:08Speaker 5: beginning to really feel that they're in a position to
- 35:12Speaker 5: have a home iice advantage, to make sure that they
- 35:14Speaker 5: can compete against anybody. And with recent results, I think
- 35:18Speaker 5: they've done a really good job against top teams, and
- 35:20Speaker 5: I think all of that is lent to the confidence
- 35:23Speaker 5: of the team. But then you throw on what Macklin
- 35:25Speaker 5: Celebrini's doing at age nineteen. You know, you usually look
- 35:29Speaker 5: at players and you say, Okay, he's a young guy,
- 35:32Speaker 5: and he's scoring a lot of points, right, great, well
- 35:36Speaker 5: most of the time, if you take a look at
- 35:37Speaker 5: it and you break it down between home and road,
- 35:40Speaker 5: usually that you know the young guy will get a
- 35:42Speaker 5: lot of points at home, won't score as much on
- 35:44Speaker 5: the road because they don't have the matchups, you don't
- 35:46Speaker 5: have the last change, and a whole variety of other factors. Macklin,
- 35:50Speaker 5: Celebrini's leading the National Hockey League and scoring on the
- 35:52Speaker 5: road at age nineteen, and that's just sort of testimony
- 35:56Speaker 5: to what he's meant to the team and how things
- 35:58Speaker 5: are clicking for him and how we're looking at the
- 36:01Speaker 5: development of a next great era of unbelievable superstar in
- 36:05Speaker 5: the league.
- 36:06Speaker 1: I remember having a conversation with you with Randy Han
- 36:09Speaker 1: when you guys were here, and I think it just
- 36:11Speaker 1: kind of shed more light as far as just the
- 36:12Speaker 1: potential he's got, but already how special of to start
- 36:15Speaker 1: that he is up to. So before we touch more
- 36:18Speaker 1: on that, I can't help but think after the winless streak,
- 36:22Speaker 1: you guys go into New York and get a game
- 36:25Speaker 1: into overtime, win a Celebrini hat trick five point game,
- 36:29Speaker 1: and then the win for instance against New Jersey, a
- 36:33Speaker 1: team that is rolling right now under Sheldon Keith. Was
- 36:36Speaker 1: there a specific game that you really began to see
- 36:38Speaker 1: the pieces begin to really fall into place it for
- 36:41Speaker 1: this team.
- 36:42Speaker 5: I'd say probably that road trip. I'd say probably that
- 36:45Speaker 5: gamer reference to Madison Square Garden is probably the best
- 36:48Speaker 5: example because in that amazing atmosphere, with that spotlight on
- 36:53Speaker 5: the team, the Sharks rose to the occasion. It wasn't
- 36:56Speaker 5: just Celebrini and we shouldn't, you know, we do need
- 36:59Speaker 5: to see his praises and talk about what he's meant
- 37:02Speaker 5: to the club and what he's going to mean in
- 37:03Speaker 5: the future, not only to this club but to the
- 37:05Speaker 5: game of hockey. But also you know, the players like
- 37:09Speaker 5: Will Smith and Mario Ferrero and Colin Graff, and you know,
- 37:13Speaker 5: I can go through the entire roster. Both goaltenders started
- 37:16Speaker 5: to play quite well. That was another thing too. It
- 37:18Speaker 5: took a while for both goaltenders to start to really
- 37:21Speaker 5: really click. And I think that game Madison Square Garden
- 37:25Speaker 5: was a big one because it was in the big
- 37:26Speaker 5: spotlight that they performed, and after that they had some
- 37:29Speaker 5: confidence and they said, Okay, we can do this. They
- 37:33Speaker 5: had a few other challenges. I think that you know
- 37:35Speaker 5: that that has developed, and you know that sort of
- 37:38Speaker 5: is blossomed really with the first meeting in Seattle where
- 37:41Speaker 5: you know, the Sharks. The morning of that of that game,
- 37:43Speaker 5: we're not expecting to play seven defensemen and eleven forwards.
- 37:46Speaker 5: They were expecting to play a standard six d and
- 37:49Speaker 5: twelve forwards. Michael Misa got dinged up in the morning skate,
- 37:53Speaker 5: so they called Vinnie Deharna and after you know, they
- 37:56Speaker 5: started really bag skating him and they said, well, you're
- 37:58Speaker 5: going to have to You're gonna have to in a
- 38:00Speaker 5: little earlier because you think you might have to play.
- 38:02Speaker 5: He ends up playing really well in the penalty kill.
- 38:04Speaker 5: And I think that they were very prepared special teams
- 38:07Speaker 5: against that team, So every time they had something thrown
- 38:10Speaker 5: at them, they seem to respond to it and do
- 38:13Speaker 5: it with enthusiasm and accept that challenge instead of letting
- 38:17Speaker 5: the challenges get to them. And I think that's sort
- 38:19Speaker 5: of a description of the way the season is going.
- 38:22Speaker 8: Dan talk a little bit about the culture of this team,
- 38:25Speaker 8: the personality if you will. You know, from the outside
- 38:28Speaker 8: looking in, it seems like a bunch of guys that
- 38:31Speaker 8: obviously take their jobs very seriously, but don't take themselves
- 38:35Speaker 8: very seriously. They keep things light. At a chance to
- 38:38Speaker 8: be between the benches last night, and you know, it
- 38:40Speaker 8: wasn't just towards the end of the game when it
- 38:42Speaker 8: was certainly out of hand for the cracking, but you
- 38:45Speaker 8: could see it throughout the game. A lot of smiles
- 38:47Speaker 8: on the bench, you know, talk a little bit about that.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Well, I think that that's a big part of it.
- 38:52Speaker 5: You know. Larry Robinson used to always tell us back
- 38:54Speaker 5: in the day that one of the keys to all
- 38:56Speaker 5: of the Stanley Cup championships that he won, not only
- 38:58Speaker 5: as a player but later on the coach or a
- 39:00Speaker 5: member of management, was because they remember that it was
- 39:03Speaker 5: just the game and that they have to have fun
- 39:06Speaker 5: playing the game. And you know, Igor Larryanoff used to
- 39:09Speaker 5: always tell us, you don't work hockey, you play hockey,
- 39:12Speaker 5: and that's the side of it that you have to
- 39:15Speaker 5: remember about this game. That's really important. So you probably
- 39:20Speaker 5: saw that on the bench. They've got an element of that.
- 39:22Speaker 5: Of course, they've got prodigious talent to be able to
- 39:24Speaker 5: back it all up. But then again, behind the bench,
- 39:27Speaker 5: you've also got Ryan Warsowsky who understands this generation quite well.
- 39:31Speaker 5: He's a very young coach in the National Hockey League
- 39:34Speaker 5: and he seems to get the best out out of
- 39:36Speaker 5: that group of people. And you know, we saw what
- 39:39Speaker 5: he's already done with Team USA and the World Championships,
- 39:41Speaker 5: winning a gold medal too, So you know that's another
- 39:45Speaker 5: factor that's important.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Dan touching on Maclin celebrating more, We've heard a lot
- 39:49Speaker 1: of the supplieratives already about the comparisons his game, But
- 39:53Speaker 1: what do you see right now with where he's at
- 39:56Speaker 1: in just his nineteen year old season versus say, when
- 39:59Speaker 1: he he could be, you know, peaking topping out of
- 40:02Speaker 1: say twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven years of age.
- 40:06Speaker 5: Sky's a limit for the kid. He can do everything.
- 40:08Speaker 5: He does it in all three zones, and he does
- 40:10Speaker 5: it with a joy about the game that's very infectious.
- 40:14Speaker 5: He gets people to follow him as he drives the
- 40:17Speaker 5: energy and the level of the team. When things aren't
- 40:20Speaker 5: going well, he plays with a great competitiveness to try
- 40:23Speaker 5: to get things back under control. And all of these
- 40:26Speaker 5: things are things that are just starting to develop. I
- 40:28Speaker 5: think just before we played, you know, we said we
- 40:30Speaker 5: had we played the game between the Sharks and the Kraken.
- 40:33Speaker 5: There was a back to back set of games against
- 40:35Speaker 5: Colorado against Detroit where the Sharks beat Colorado on overtime.
- 40:39Speaker 5: Next game they were playing against the Red Wings, and
- 40:42Speaker 5: through that entire game, he and Maurit Sider had an
- 40:45Speaker 5: unbelievable back and forth, Batley going intensely at it, and
- 40:51Speaker 5: he just put his arms around that and absolutely loved it,
- 40:53Speaker 5: and his teammates loved it too.
- 40:56Speaker 2: You know.
- 40:56Speaker 5: Of course, he was doing that with the knowledge that
- 40:59Speaker 5: if things ever he did get out of hand. Number one,
- 41:01Speaker 5: he was showing Detroit that he wasn't going to put
- 41:03Speaker 5: up with that. But number two, he showed confidence that
- 41:06Speaker 5: his teammates would would be right there to back him up,
- 41:08Speaker 5: which of course they would be. So I think it's infectious.
- 41:11Speaker 5: I think it's I think it's fun, and it's spectacular.
- 41:17Speaker 1: When it comes to Will Smith, who has been you know,
- 41:19Speaker 1: along his side basically here for the last couple of
- 41:21Speaker 1: years and a big part of this score. I mean,
- 41:23Speaker 1: we've seen a lot of the skill that was on
- 41:26Speaker 1: display here for the first game between these two teams
- 41:28Speaker 1: in Seattle again. But you know, I kind of asked
- 41:31Speaker 1: a similar question previously with Mattlan celebrating, But is there
- 41:34Speaker 1: anybody you've seen prior, whether it might be on the
- 41:37Speaker 1: Sharks or in the NHL that kind of reminds you
- 41:39Speaker 1: of Will Smith in his game.
- 41:41Speaker 5: Not really. He's got a combination of a lot of
- 41:43Speaker 5: different types of players. I think the biggest thing that
- 41:46Speaker 5: he has is an incredibly high hoy iq. He knows
- 41:50Speaker 5: where the puck is going. I don't know how he does.
- 41:53Speaker 5: He has sort of a premonition as to where things
- 41:56Speaker 5: are going to happen. He puts himself into a position
- 42:00Speaker 5: because he's able to buy more time for himself. He
- 42:02Speaker 5: makes himself appear faster than perhaps the actual reality is.
- 42:07Speaker 5: And I think that that's really important. But there's another
- 42:09Speaker 5: factor about Will Smith too that has nothing to do
- 42:11Speaker 5: about hockey, and that has to do with the fun
- 42:13Speaker 5: part we were just talking about. I think that Macklin
- 42:15Speaker 5: is just very serious, very driven, very into it, and
- 42:17Speaker 5: yes he's got a great personality, but Will brings out
- 42:20Speaker 5: the lighter side in Macklin, and I think Macklin brings
- 42:24Speaker 5: out a more serious side and Will So it's really
- 42:27Speaker 5: an interesting combination. You know, when you're trying to put
- 42:29Speaker 5: together a great team, every club needs a Batman and
- 42:33Speaker 5: a Robin, and it looks like the Sharks have both
- 42:34Speaker 5: of those superheroes on their roster.
- 42:38Speaker 8: Talk a little bit about and I've read this, I've
- 42:40Speaker 8: got to believe it's true. But talk a little bit
- 42:42Speaker 8: about the living situation with Macklin Celebrity. I understand he
- 42:46Speaker 8: might have a roommate from a former Shark.
- 42:50Speaker 5: Well, it's not just Macklin, it's a whole group of
- 42:52Speaker 5: him now. So Macklin Celebrini lives with Joe Thornton, Hall
- 42:56Speaker 5: of Famer, somebody that also knew exacts actly how to
- 43:00Speaker 5: approach day to day life and knew how to enjoy
- 43:03Speaker 5: the game. Will Smith lives with Patrick Marlowe, which I
- 43:06Speaker 5: think is an interesting in combination. Joe Thornton was number
- 43:11Speaker 5: one overall, so he knows exactly what Maclin is going through.
- 43:14Speaker 5: He understands all the pressures. He played in Boston played
- 43:17Speaker 5: for the Sharks, always had the weight of the world
- 43:20Speaker 5: and his shoulders, and on the other side of it,
- 43:23Speaker 5: Patrick Marlo was always kind of that second guy, even
- 43:26Speaker 5: though he was a you know, superstar. He's likely going
- 43:28Speaker 5: in the Hockey Hall of Fame too. He was always
- 43:30Speaker 5: sort of in the shadow of Joe Thornton is the
- 43:32Speaker 5: second overall guy, and Will Smith is sort of in
- 43:35Speaker 5: that area right now too, so it's really interesting to
- 43:38Speaker 5: see how those guys have combined together. The third kind
- 43:41Speaker 5: of leg of that appears to be Michael Misa, who
- 43:44Speaker 5: now was eighteen years of age, I guess is spending
- 43:47Speaker 5: a lot of time with the Tyler Tiffoli family. So
- 43:49Speaker 5: you know, another veteran player who's been through everything. He's
- 43:53Speaker 5: won a Stanley Cup. And these kids are really benefiting
- 43:57Speaker 5: from the fact that their living situations are like that.
- 44:00Speaker 5: Think about it when you know, if I were nineteen
- 44:02Speaker 5: years old and I were out in the NHL and
- 44:04Speaker 5: you gave me a million dollars, I'd probably be dead
- 44:06Speaker 5: right now. But these guys are so, you know, such
- 44:09Speaker 5: great shape, pardon me, and and they're they're they're really uh,
- 44:14Speaker 5: they're really amazingly qualified. But they have that balance.
- 44:19Speaker 1: With these players, I can't imagine what I would want
- 44:23Speaker 1: to do at nineteen years of age with a million
- 44:24Speaker 1: dollars in anywhere I would want to live or anywhere
- 44:27Speaker 1: I'd want to go. It'd be a scary combination here.
- 44:29Speaker 1: But that's what but surety is for when you grow
- 44:31Speaker 1: up here a little bit more, Dan.
- 44:32Speaker 5: I want to ask you about remember this. Remember this
- 44:35Speaker 5: one thing too that it's really important to add to
- 44:38Speaker 5: that is that, you know, we joke about a little
- 44:41Speaker 5: of that, but the truth is they are still kids
- 44:44Speaker 5: and part of them they are you know, you see
- 44:46Speaker 5: that off the ice, but on the ice they're total pros.
- 44:49Speaker 5: But you have to remember that, you know, the process
- 44:52Speaker 5: of becoming a full fledged adult is a is a
- 44:56Speaker 5: sometimes like a stock market chart. You have some moments
- 44:58Speaker 5: where things go right and they don't. So it's great
- 45:00Speaker 5: to have people around you that show you the right way.
- 45:04Speaker 5: I mean, the biggest thing for me is that number
- 45:07Speaker 5: one to Bee of Thornton, Joe's wife is an awesome cook,
- 45:11Speaker 5: Christina Marlow makes the food like nobody else. So they're
- 45:16Speaker 5: getting proper nutrition, and they're getting proper guidance with sleep,
- 45:19Speaker 5: and they're also getting guidance between with men that have
- 45:23Speaker 5: their own families, that care about their kids, that spend
- 45:26Speaker 5: a lot of time away from the rink with their
- 45:27Speaker 5: children and take that responsibility and I think that that's
- 45:31Speaker 5: just a great example for any of these people.
- 45:34Speaker 8: It sounds like there's a lot of focus on the
- 45:36Speaker 8: off ice stuff. What about the on ice stuff like
- 45:40Speaker 8: Jumbo and Marlow reviewing tape with them at home or
- 45:43Speaker 8: they leave that stuff alone.
- 45:45Speaker 5: No, they probably do spend a little bit of time
- 45:48Speaker 5: talking about things like that with them, but I think
- 45:50Speaker 5: it's a little bit less organized when it comes to that.
- 45:53Speaker 5: You know, maybe if these guys ask them the question.
- 45:55Speaker 5: You know, both Joe Thornton and Patrick Martin were part
- 45:58Speaker 5: of the Sharks development staff and that's officials this year.
- 46:03Speaker 5: With Joe Thornton, once he got into the Hall of
- 46:05Speaker 5: Fame and so forth, we used to call him the
- 46:07Speaker 5: director of Vibes with the Sharks. I'm not sure if
- 46:10Speaker 5: he still has that sort of unofficial title, but he's
- 46:12Speaker 5: part of the development staff. Patrick Martl is a development
- 46:16Speaker 5: coach and they spend a lot of time with a
- 46:19Speaker 5: lot of the young prospects in the organization. And you know,
- 46:21Speaker 5: the way it's worked is, you know, they go back
- 46:23Speaker 5: and they might even talk to a kid that's playing
- 46:25Speaker 5: junior and watch him play a little bit. And we've
- 46:27Speaker 5: got another group of people, Tommy Wingles, Lucas Spik's people
- 46:31Speaker 5: that have had long careers that spend a lot of
- 46:33Speaker 5: time with these young players. And even in the goaltending department.
- 46:37Speaker 5: You again, you to back office, the director of goaltending,
- 46:39Speaker 5: but they've got Ryan Miller out there scouting future goaltender
- 46:42Speaker 5: prospects for the Sharks. And I think that it's very
- 46:45Speaker 5: organized to make sure that they have the tools that
- 46:47Speaker 5: are necessary for these kids to succeeds. Yeah, they are,
- 46:52Speaker 5: and they you know, if I had somebody like that
- 46:55Speaker 5: to be like Yoda, you know, I'm saying that these
- 46:57Speaker 5: guys really understand what needs to be done, and you know,
- 47:02Speaker 5: they are also there for when things don't go well.
- 47:05Speaker 5: I think that might even be the most important thing,
- 47:08Speaker 5: because you know, they have to be reminded that yes,
- 47:11Speaker 5: they're going to have great careers, yes that you know,
- 47:13Speaker 5: they need to feel really good about themselves.
- 47:16Speaker 1: We have a Star Wars reference now checked and we
- 47:18Speaker 1: can also can say Patrick Marlow, I've mentioned here on
- 47:22Speaker 1: this conversation with Al Koniski to former Seattle Thunderbirds check
- 47:26Speaker 1: as well for that reference. Andrew Zanowski joining us here
- 47:28Speaker 1: on the Beacon Plumbing hotline, and Dan Last couple of
- 47:30Speaker 1: things before we let you go here. Yeah, check. I mean,
- 47:34Speaker 1: once upon a time the San Jose Sharks, an infant
- 47:38Speaker 1: organization coming out of the cal Palace looking to grow
- 47:41Speaker 1: the game in San Jose, and the ninety two massive
- 47:43Speaker 1: Playoff runs. And now you have players like Joe Thornton
- 47:47Speaker 1: from London, Ontario is ticking around, Patrick Marlow as well,
- 47:50Speaker 1: and the bakav that you mentioned, Tommy Wingles. What's the
- 47:54Speaker 1: what's what's the common uniting theme here with what has
- 47:57Speaker 1: now attracted players to stay and build a greater foundation
- 48:02Speaker 1: in San Jose, kind of like what the Kraken want
- 48:04Speaker 1: to be, you know, years upon years down the road.
- 48:08Speaker 5: It takes a long time to do that. And of
- 48:10Speaker 5: course you also have the added factor. You have two
- 48:13Speaker 5: things going on here. Number one, no offense to any
- 48:15Speaker 5: place else, but we really believe Northern California is the
- 48:18Speaker 5: best place to live in the world. There are the
- 48:20Speaker 5: cost of living issues certainly that get involved, the cost
- 48:23Speaker 5: of housing, so forth and so on, but the facilities
- 48:26Speaker 5: are great, the weather is beautiful, and the one thing
- 48:31Speaker 5: that we've always said is that the guy's wives and
- 48:34Speaker 5: girlfriends really love it in Northern California. So that's all
- 48:37Speaker 5: check marks in favor. But what you're talking about, too
- 48:40Speaker 5: is the development of the game. Scott Hannon, who's another
- 48:43Speaker 5: former Shark, another former Western Hockey leaguer, ended up he's
- 48:46Speaker 5: run now running the junior Sharks program, and so that's
- 48:49Speaker 5: a real upgrade in terms of the total overview of
- 48:54Speaker 5: the coaching and working with the kids. I think that
- 48:57Speaker 5: the goal is to make the Sharks junior program here
- 49:01Speaker 5: stronger as time goes on. What's happened over years, and
- 49:05Speaker 5: what happens oftentimes with young kids is they get to
- 49:07Speaker 5: be about fifteen. This was the tradition in the in
- 49:10Speaker 5: the northern California area. You become really good and then
- 49:13Speaker 5: you leave. Well, now they want to make it so
- 49:15Speaker 5: that they can stay and you've got more people sticking around.
- 49:18Speaker 5: You know, you remember a few years ago, I think
- 49:20Speaker 5: it was one year, I can't remember the exact year,
- 49:22Speaker 5: but four people were drafted in the first round and
- 49:25Speaker 5: they were all from the Saint Louis area. Well, that's
- 49:28Speaker 5: because of all of those guys that's stuck around to
- 49:30Speaker 5: Saint Louis and now are coaching all these kids. And
- 49:34Speaker 5: I think that that's the kind of direction we like
- 49:36Speaker 5: to see things going here. Most of it still is
- 49:39Speaker 5: with the you know, the NHL team's development staff and
- 49:42Speaker 5: so forth. But you know, Mark Smith lives here. He's
- 49:46Speaker 5: involved in coaching girls and guys in the junior Sharks program.
- 49:50Speaker 5: Scott Hannon is here. There are a number of other
- 49:53Speaker 5: people that have stuck around, and I think it creates
- 49:55Speaker 5: a great atmosphere for the future.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Dan, you had the Jets schedule here obviously, so I
- 50:01Speaker 1: mean we can't talk about what you've seen as far
- 50:04Speaker 1: as when we have you know, this conversation translate into
- 50:07Speaker 1: when it's going to go live and I'll kind of
- 50:09Speaker 1: market here. But what's your general perception about the Jets
- 50:13Speaker 1: and about the kind of potential that they have again
- 50:15Speaker 1: this year?
- 50:16Speaker 5: Well, this upcoming group of games for the Sharks is
- 50:19Speaker 5: a really important set of games, not only to keep
- 50:22Speaker 5: going what they've got going right now, where they're playing
- 50:25Speaker 5: pretty consistent hockey in which they're responding to challenges, getting
- 50:29Speaker 5: good goaltending, you know, getting better as the games go
- 50:32Speaker 5: on and so forth, but they've also got to establish
- 50:35Speaker 5: a really strong home ice advantage and they really need
- 50:38Speaker 5: to do that. And I think that being able to
- 50:40Speaker 5: do that against a team like Winnipeg, a team like
- 50:42Speaker 5: Florida coming up. You got one team, Florida that's the
- 50:45Speaker 5: Stanley Cup champion. But you've got Winnipeg, I think, is
- 50:49Speaker 5: a team that's maybe the best team that hasn't won
- 50:51Speaker 5: the Stanley Cup. I mean, they've got just about everything
- 50:54Speaker 5: on their roster. Now, they've got Jonathan Taves there to
- 50:57Speaker 5: provide some veteran leadership. You know, you've already got Mark Schifeley,
- 51:00Speaker 5: one of the best players in the game, our old
- 51:02Speaker 5: friend Diyldon Devello, whom we like to see come back,
- 51:05Speaker 5: and you know, having such a successful career. And well
- 51:10Speaker 5: Connor Hillibuck, I mean he's going to be the team
- 51:12Speaker 5: USA goaltender so in the Olympics. So I think that
- 51:16Speaker 5: that's a big, big challenge. The other thing about it, too,
- 51:19Speaker 5: is they play a hard game. Both these teams in
- 51:23Speaker 5: the in this homestand they play a hard game, physical game.
- 51:26Speaker 5: They make you pay. Whether or not Matthew Kitchuk can
- 51:28Speaker 5: play an off for Florida doesn't really matter. They come
- 51:31Speaker 5: at you too. But Winnipeg is like that. They have
- 51:34Speaker 5: strong team toughness and they're not to be trifled with.
- 51:38Speaker 5: So I think it's a big challenge for the Sharks
- 51:40Speaker 5: to continue that development of home ice advantage and to
- 51:44Speaker 5: make sure that they're you know, you know, sending out
- 51:46Speaker 5: the message to the league that coming to SAP Center
- 51:49Speaker 5: is a lot like it used to be back maybe
- 51:52Speaker 5: as seven eight years ago when the Sharks were challenging
- 51:55Speaker 5: for a Stanley Cup. They want to create those conditions
- 51:58Speaker 5: again and the fans are looking forward to.
- 51:59Speaker 1: That kind of has that similar feel of Thornton and
- 52:02Speaker 1: Marlow again.
- 52:03Speaker 5: Dann.
- 52:03Speaker 1: We appreciate the insight, keep up the great work. Looking
- 52:06Speaker 1: forward to having you back up here once again, and
- 52:08Speaker 1: we'll talk to you soon.
- 52:09Speaker 5: Thank you, looking forward to seeing you guys.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Thanks all right. Great to hear from a legend radio voice.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Dan Rusanowski foxtere Hewitt recipient, longtime San Jose Sharks radio voice,
- 52:18Speaker 1: joining us here on cracking weekly brief, Ahl Update, Coachell
- 52:22Speaker 1: Valley off Today. They're hosting Baker's Field tomorrow. Firebirds three
- 52:27Speaker 1: one and one now in their last five games. Jagger
- 52:29Speaker 1: Fercus is your scoring leader eleven points so far on
- 52:32Speaker 1: the season. EHL Kansas City and the Circus. The Circus
- 52:38Speaker 1: is open for business. EHL Kansas City Wednesday, they're at Wichita.
- 52:44Speaker 1: They are third right now in the Western Conference, two
- 52:46Speaker 1: points back of first place Tahoe. Boy, did I ever
- 52:51Speaker 1: regret not going there for a road trip back in
- 52:54Speaker 1: my EHL days. But I think also is in the
- 52:56Speaker 1: same boat. Also Fort Wayne in that first place tie
- 52:59Speaker 1: as well.
- 53:00Speaker 7: Well listen, I'll tell you what partner I was.
- 53:03Speaker 6: I was born and bred in the north central division
- 53:07Speaker 6: of the EHL, Kalamazoo, Wheeling, West Virginia, Fort Wayne, Toulleda.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Or in the heartland of the EHL.
- 53:16Speaker 6: Reading Pennsylvania, Mowleen, Illinois. You know you were out in Stockton,
- 53:21Speaker 6: but at least you had bakers Field.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, some plum visits, Oh yeah, some plum job visits.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Ontario not too far out of LA. I had San
- 53:30Speaker 1: Diego my first year. You had Victoria.
- 53:33Speaker 7: Also times in the EHL.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Victoria for from five to twenty twenty eleven. There
- 53:42Speaker 1: there was some good living up there. Utah, great stop
- 53:45Speaker 1: Phoenix as well, Great Stop Idaho is still there there there.
- 53:48Speaker 1: There's a lot of fun stops from back in the
- 53:50Speaker 1: day in the Western Conference. All right, looking at head
- 53:52Speaker 1: here for the Kraken, no back to backs here for
- 53:54Speaker 1: this week. Of course, again, as we said, Columbus is
- 53:56Speaker 1: coming up tomorrow night for Military Appreciation Night, winnipe second
- 54:00Speaker 1: matchup of the season. They visit here Thursday. San Jose
- 54:04Speaker 1: Hockey Fights Cancer Night coming up on Saturday. Rematch from that.
- 54:10Speaker 1: When we look at the benchmark here, three games, six
- 54:13Speaker 1: points on the table, four points out of six, are
- 54:17Speaker 1: we setting that as the appropriate bar?
- 54:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the way I see it, Mikey.
- 54:22Speaker 8: There's no reason why they shouldn't plan to have four
- 54:24Speaker 8: of the six points, however they get it. But though
- 54:27Speaker 8: there's definitely four points in there this team can have.
- 54:30Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm with al here, and I'm gonna even go
- 54:32Speaker 6: a little bit further. You know, we're not We're We're
- 54:36Speaker 6: fifteen games into the season, so obviously there is a
- 54:38Speaker 6: ton of hockey left. And I'm not gonna sit here
- 54:42Speaker 6: and say that we are we are at the point
- 54:44Speaker 6: of no return. But we're getting to the point where
- 54:48Speaker 6: teams who aren't in a playoff spot, teams behind the
- 54:51Speaker 6: crack in, or teams who are out of it, they're
- 54:54Speaker 6: gonna have to start going on runs here. They're gonna
- 54:56Speaker 6: have to start winning five in a row, six in
- 54:59Speaker 6: a row.
- 55:00Speaker 7: So seven in a row. Si Anaheim, they're gonna start.
- 55:02Speaker 6: Needing points in ten of eleven if they want to
- 55:05Speaker 6: get back in it. If you're Seattle, obviously you'd also
- 55:09Speaker 6: like to go on runs. But if you can take
- 55:11Speaker 6: four of every six points, if you can find ways
- 55:14Speaker 6: to I mean, we hate overtime games, but these points
- 55:18Speaker 6: are gonna be massive down the road. What are the
- 55:21Speaker 6: Avalanche seven? One in five, seven to one and six.
- 55:25Speaker 6: For all intents and purposes, the Avs are seven and
- 55:28Speaker 6: six this season, right, So it's not like they're these
- 55:31Speaker 6: world beating teams. So if the Kraken can find ways
- 55:34Speaker 6: to continue like they have been doing, I mean they're
- 55:37Speaker 6: four to two and two in their last eight games.
- 55:40Speaker 6: Yeah you know, yeah, they're two to two and two
- 55:42Speaker 6: in their last six. But they've got points in four
- 55:44Speaker 6: of their last six games. So if they can find
- 55:46Speaker 6: a way to keep up what they've been doing, I
- 55:49Speaker 6: think they hold down that playoff spot. I think they
- 55:51Speaker 6: continue to fend off the teams who are behind them.
- 55:54Speaker 6: So yeah, I think four of four of six points
- 55:58Speaker 6: this weekend, that is the absolute low bar for the Kraken.
- 56:02Speaker 8: I think you said it well too, fits It's not
- 56:04Speaker 8: a lot of teams that have not started out well
- 56:07Speaker 8: need to go on runs. But the Kracking don't have
- 56:10Speaker 8: to go on the run, right, They just they just
- 56:12Speaker 8: have to play consistently and keep getting points here and there.
- 56:16Speaker 8: Like you say, three games, get four to six points,
- 56:19Speaker 8: that's fine, you don't have to win all three. Keep
- 56:21Speaker 8: playing that way, you're going to find yourself in a
- 56:23Speaker 8: playoff position and.
- 56:24Speaker 6: Try to avoid and try to avoid the stinker, right,
- 56:28Speaker 6: I mean, they're going to happen. I remember back when
- 56:30Speaker 6: I was one of my old coaches said Everett and hockey,
- 56:33Speaker 6: you know, every year you were always guaranteed to get
- 56:37Speaker 6: blown out, but you are not guaranteed to blow someone out, right,
- 56:41Speaker 6: So there's always going to be a stinker or two
- 56:44Speaker 6: that happens, but they need to be well timed stinkers,
- 56:47Speaker 6: like for me, the San Jose that was your one
- 56:50Speaker 6: stinker until January. Right, you can't have another six Monday,
- 56:55Speaker 6: and you have them coming back Saturday.
- 56:57Speaker 8: So exactly because of what happened in the last game,
- 56:59Speaker 8: I would expect that might be the best game the
- 57:02Speaker 8: Crack and play all week, even though they've got Winnipeg
- 57:05Speaker 8: and Columbus as well.
- 57:06Speaker 1: That first period is going to be under a microscope
- 57:08Speaker 1: coming up on Saturday versus what happened matplan celebrating is
- 57:11Speaker 1: scoring over a minute end of the game in this
- 57:13Speaker 1: first matchup here. Hey, speaking of guys, the San Jose
- 57:16Speaker 1: Sharks are knocking on the door here for a playoff spot.
- 57:18Speaker 1: The crack in in a playoff spot right now. Anaheim's
- 57:22Speaker 1: lead in the Pacific Division. They won seven straight games,
- 57:25Speaker 1: Vegas tied with the Kraken, then behind them right now
- 57:29Speaker 1: in the division, behind the Kraken tied for second. You
- 57:32Speaker 1: have the Kings tied for them, San Jose one point back,
- 57:36Speaker 1: Vancouver one point back, Edmonton two. Calgary's in the basement
- 57:40Speaker 1: right now. I mean, how many of these teams are
- 57:44Speaker 1: on your Bengo card for the spots that they're in
- 57:46Speaker 1: from two months ago. But ultimately the biggest question is
- 57:50Speaker 1: who are you most concerned about behind them going on
- 57:53Speaker 1: a major run?
- 57:54Speaker 8: Well, no, I mean you're right, Mike, And the way
- 57:57Speaker 8: it looks right now isn't anywhere close.
- 58:00Speaker 3: To where what we all find I mean, look at
- 58:02Speaker 3: Calgary at the bottom.
- 58:03Speaker 8: Yeah, nobody thought that coming with Dustin wolf in the
- 58:05Speaker 8: big contract he signed, and you know Edminton coming off
- 58:10Speaker 8: of the Stanley Cup Finals, you just assumed they would
- 58:13Speaker 8: be in the top portion of the division, let alone
- 58:16Speaker 8: the conference. So yeah, a lot of surprises. Winnipeg concerns me.
- 58:22Speaker 8: Utah concerns me like Utah has been playing lights out.
- 58:25Speaker 3: I think they might have.
- 58:26Speaker 8: Cooled off a little bit over the last kick couple
- 58:28Speaker 8: of games, but they've been playing lights out. So yeah,
- 58:32Speaker 8: Utah is probably the one that stands out to me.
- 58:34Speaker 6: Yeah, Utah Winnipeg both have lost three in a row.
- 58:38Speaker 6: You know, I think for me, the biggest surprise is Anaheim.
- 58:42Speaker 7: Eleven to three and one, they've won seven.
- 58:46Speaker 1: Even then they're they're also eleven two and one since
- 58:48Speaker 1: opening night here.
- 58:49Speaker 7: Yeah, that's the crazy part opening that was here though. Yeah,
- 58:52Speaker 7: let's go.
- 58:53Speaker 6: So, I mean, I think Anaheim to me is the
- 58:56Speaker 6: biggest surprise. Say what you want, you know that that
- 59:01Speaker 6: group I think is real. You know they I think
- 59:04Speaker 6: they're gonna cool off a little bit, but I mean,
- 59:06Speaker 6: I think Anaheim is again you're getting to that point
- 59:10Speaker 6: where they're banking enough points early.
- 59:12Speaker 7: On where you know they're not going to.
- 59:15Speaker 6: Have to go on one of these runs that I
- 59:17Speaker 6: was just talking about the team that scares me, and
- 59:19Speaker 6: that will continue to scare me.
- 59:21Speaker 7: Or the Edmonton Oilers.
- 59:22Speaker 6: We've there back to back Western Conference champions, They've gone
- 59:25Speaker 6: to the finals tiers in a row.
- 59:26Speaker 7: They have McDavid, they have dry title.
- 59:29Speaker 6: Goaltending, let's be real, non existent most nights in Edmonton.
- 59:32Speaker 6: They are a team that outscores their problems. And as
- 59:37Speaker 6: long as you have two of the three best players
- 59:39Speaker 6: in the world, two of the four best players in
- 59:41Speaker 6: the world, you can never write Edmonton off. They're two
- 59:44Speaker 6: points back of Seattle right now in the division. Vancouver's
- 59:47Speaker 6: one point back, the Kings are tied.
- 59:50Speaker 7: San Jose is one point back of Seattle.
- 59:52Speaker 6: So I mean the one team that if I had
- 59:55Speaker 6: picked one of those teams, it's still Edmonton.
- 59:58Speaker 7: But yeah, didn't have any of this on the Bingal card.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Before we get out of here, let's get to our
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: three stars from this past week. I'll begin on this one.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: I would go with star number three, team defense and
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: for their ability to lock matters down period two and
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: especially in period three. This is a way they have
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: to play to give their goaltending a chance to keep
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: them in games night after night, and they can't rely
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: on goaltending to bail them out like other teams would
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: have when you can go with top line star power,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: this is the way they have to play. It's with
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: a lunch pail mentality and finding a way to keep
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: the middle clear and get pucks eventually out of their
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: own zone and keep games low. Event Star two, I'm
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: gonna go there. I'm gonna go Philip Grubauer and things
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: didn't begin well for him in Saint Louis Akraken we're
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: down two nothing, but you saw in the midst of
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: this comeback the saves he made were very important saves
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: to keep this team in this game, and I think
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: for that kind of game, that's what you're asking for,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: to have Grubauer make the basic saves and eventually, when
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you have a high dangered chance, hope that he can
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: bail you out. And I remember even before the Jordan
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Kyru goal, he was phenomenal one stop, two stop, three stops.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: He was key, and the room recognized him for that.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: After that win in Saint Louis and Star one, I'll
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: stay at the same position. Matt Murray as well. A
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: lot of question marks heading into this season, but against Dallas,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: that against the kind of game that you're looking for
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: out of him. First period wasn't pretty and he kind
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: of guessed maybe in the Tyler Sagan goal, but he
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: was tremendous, shot after shot after shot. Period two, period three,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: he didn't face a lot of rubber likes say Casey
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: to Smith, but again he gave this team a chance.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: And this is what the Kraken are asking for out
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: of those two. When Joey Decord cannot go.
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: Well good next. My third star of the week was
- 1:01:56Speaker 8: Mason Marchman. I think we saw his the best game
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: of the season and all he logged eighteen minutes of
- 1:02:01Speaker 8: ice time, four shots on goal, four hits. He's got
- 1:02:06Speaker 8: to play that way every game, and I hope that
- 1:02:09Speaker 8: he's getting a little bit of pressure from his linemates,
- 1:02:12Speaker 8: from the coaching staff to say, you know, that was
- 1:02:14Speaker 8: your best game. We want to see that every game
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: going forward. Second star of the week for me was
- 1:02:19Speaker 8: Shane Wright. The ot winner in Saint Louis was huge.
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: The tit a chance at the end of the game
- 1:02:25Speaker 8: in Dallas that if you listened to the call, I
- 1:02:28Speaker 8: think Fitz thought it was going in. He was, he
- 1:02:30Speaker 8: was that excited about it, but it was It was
- 1:02:33Speaker 8: two games in a row, almost tied it within seconds
- 1:02:35Speaker 8: of the final buzzer, but Wright wasn't able to get
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: that second one. So he was my second star of
- 1:02:39Speaker 8: the week. And then my first star goes to Elli
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: told And I know he's been on the schneid lately,
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: but a goal to assist in the Saint Louis game,
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: five hits for him in the Dallas game. He's now
- 1:02:50Speaker 8: tied with ty car Cha for hits in the season
- 1:02:53Speaker 8: at forty. I'd like to see ty car Cha, Ellie Tolson,
- 1:02:56Speaker 8: and Mason MARSHMANNT one two and three on that list
- 1:02:58Speaker 8: for hits.
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: My third Star the week is I'm gonna go Tanler Stevenson.
- 1:03:02Speaker 6: I just think that, you know, again, you have the
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: late game time goal in Saint Louis. He's average, He's getting,
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: you know, Monday in Chicago twenty two minutes, Saint Louis
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: twenty one minutes.
- 1:03:14Speaker 7: Dallas twenty three minutes of ice time.
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: He's your best face off guy, you know. I think
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: he had a really good week. Even though he was
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: only rewarded with just one goal in that week, I
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: think he could have had a.
- 1:03:26Speaker 7: Few more points. Number two, I'm going Tolvin and I
- 1:03:29Speaker 7: think I think.
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: Et you know, after being elevated to the top line
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: and then dropped to the fourth line.
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: I mean, he's done a really good job this week.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: Play still in the power play.
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: He's rolling with the punches, and he had a really
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: good week. I know we're only going to count the
- 1:03:46Speaker 6: four games this week, Chicago, San Jose and Saint Louis,
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: but Tolvey's got points in four of his last six overall,
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: so I mean, I think he's starting to find it.
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: And then number one, I'm going goaltending. I'm going Grubauer
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: Murray my one and two. I think because Joey was
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: out for the weekend. Hopefully, you know, by the time
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: this airs today or maybe tomorrow, before the Columbus game,
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: we'll have an update on Decord. Maybe Decord's playing tomorrow.
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: We don't know right so hopefully we'll have to wait
- 1:04:13Speaker 6: and see. But I think both those guys coming in,
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: you know, on on two and a half week's rest,
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: haven't gotten a lot of game time to come in
- 1:04:24Speaker 6: and play the way that they did to give the
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: cracking a a win in Saint Louis and Matt Murray
- 1:04:29Speaker 6: giving Seattle every chance to win that game in Dallas,
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: I mean cracking goaltending for the situation that they were
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: thrust it into there.
- 1:04:39Speaker 7: My number one star.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Well, because this is a podcast, we can go as
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: long as we want. Is there anything else that you
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: want to get off your chef to avoid doing chores
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: here for the rest of the entire day, kind of
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: procrastinating delay the process here, anybody, I'll.
- 1:04:51Speaker 8: Add it to you know again column balls and strikes.
- 1:04:54Speaker 8: As many good things that happened this week, I think
- 1:04:56Speaker 8: an area that's still needing work is to face offsh
- 1:05:00Speaker 8: base off continue to be on on the lower side
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: of fifty percent. And I know it's something that the
- 1:05:06Speaker 8: guys work on every practice, but it's definitely factoring into
- 1:05:10Speaker 8: chances and even some of the outcomes of these games.
- 1:05:13Speaker 8: So it's an area to see the guys can prove on.
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: Yeah, I think third period offense too.
- 1:05:17Speaker 6: Al told a second ago, eleven of the fifteen games
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: this year, the krack and have had single digit shots
- 1:05:24Speaker 6: in the third period, And of those eleven, I'm willing
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: to bet at least half six of those eleven games.
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: You know they're five or below. So when you're in
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: a two to one, three to two game. You know,
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: I understand wanting to tighten things up defensively, but you
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: know it takes a lot of pressure off your goaltending,
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: off your defense.
- 1:05:42Speaker 7: If you can go up three to one, go up
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: you know, the four to two, whatever it is.
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: Right, So I think third period this week if the
- 1:05:51Speaker 6: krack and can have more of that shot first mentality,
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: We've seen them getting better as games win, as go on,
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: but I'd like to see more pucks onto the net
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: and the third period.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: I'm going to also go there for some props I've
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: not had a chance to give to Riker Evans back
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: now from his injury. He's looked terrific in his first
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: two games games oh Man, two points through two games.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Those two points came in his debut with Saint Louis,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: But I mean you look at him and how he plays,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: and then you add Vince Done there, Brandon Montour on
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: a different pairing defensive cores all of a sudden now
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: looks a lot more mobile right now with Ryker Evans
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: as a part of all of this, and now potentially
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: maybe we'll see if what Lane Lambert wants to do,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: and I think the structure might you know, and I
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: think inhibit where you put these guys, but now you
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: have options for the power play in case you want
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: to switch things up. Dun's there, montor separate unit. Do
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: you switch him up? Maybe Riker Evans though he can
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: carry you two as a point man. So this team's
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: got options down in case they want to go there.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: But having him back, it couldn't have come any sooner.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: And I think the same goes when we can hopefully
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: get some good news here for guys like Jared McCann
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: and Freddie goodrou is a crack and the is certainly
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: still hanging in there right now and miss all the injuries.
- 1:07:06Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm hoping we get some info.
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: I mean, Jerry McCann has been day to day, you
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: know since there were a wild stars on the flag.
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: So I'm hoping that. Yeah. And listen, I understand that
- 1:07:21Speaker 7: it's not our business, stripe medical stuff is. It is
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: what it is. I get it.
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: But I really I'm hoping this week with with both
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: the coord you know, with Gudreau and and I think
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: most importantly with the Cord, we can get some definitive
- 1:07:36Speaker 6: answers on Hey, you know, day to day is out
- 1:07:40Speaker 6: for X. You know Joey Decord, we re evaluated and
- 1:07:44Speaker 6: he is available or not. Freddie Goodreau is either skating
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: or not right like, I'm hoping we can get some
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: definitive answers going into the week here, because listen, it's
- 1:07:57Speaker 6: it's not an easy schedule. You know, you've got some
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: tough games with Columbus and Winnipeg Ands and San Josa
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: this weeeky go on the road for four out east
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: next week, then you come back home for Dallas back
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: to back with Edmonton. Utah's in there like you're gonna start.
- 1:08:12Speaker 6: You're gonna need these guys. And I think, you know,
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: just for for media's sanity, our sanity, which I know
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: they care about, it will.
- 1:08:22Speaker 7: Be nice to know who's available, who's not available.
- 1:08:27Speaker 6: So that's my that's my my polite soapbox for the day.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: And on that note, are we set to get back
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: to chores?
- 1:08:35Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 1:08:36Speaker 7: There?
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: Yeah, why not? Why not? Home businesses calling here, Let's
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: get back to it. But friends say, appreciate you dropping
