- 2:24Speaker 1: Ole Miss coach Pete Golding, who's a hero in the
- 2:28Speaker 1: state of Mississippi today. And as I mentioned, Writers' Roundtable
- 2:33Speaker 1: in the second hour. There's a lot of stuff happening
- 2:37Speaker 1: around college football today. Mike Elko announcing today what we
- 2:43Speaker 1: suspected on Saturday. Terry Bussey suffered a season-ending injury at
- 2:50Speaker 1: the game on Saturday. Elko also said that his defense
- 2:58Speaker 1: was loose. Probably one of the worst defensive performances I've
- 3:03Speaker 1: had in my tenure. It wasn't because we weren't trying.
- 3:07Speaker 1: It was because we weren't able to hit it. So
- 3:10Speaker 1: we have to go back to the drawing board. He said,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I don't know if we ever felt great during practices
- 3:18Speaker 1: leading up to that game. This Saturday in the college
- 3:27Speaker 1: football world, Number one, Texas versus number 14, Tennessee. Number four,
- 3:33Speaker 1: Ole Miss versus number 21, Florida. Number 17, Iowa versus
- 3:38Speaker 1: number 18, Michigan. Number 23, A & M at number 10, LSU.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Number 21, Oregon at number 12, USC. And number 19,
- 3:49Speaker 1: Missouri at number 24, Mississippi State. remember how many times
- 3:56Speaker 1: I called SEC games in that list.
- 4:00Speaker 7: The Aggies, of course, already with a loss in SEC play.
- 4:07Speaker 7: Texas is a three-and-a-half point favorite.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Florida is minus three against Ole Miss, a little surprising.
- 4:14Speaker 1: LSU opened at minus nine-and-a-half against A & M.
- 4:19Speaker 7: Georgia minus 14 over Oklahoma.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Kickoff times for the following week have been announced, and
- 4:27Speaker 1: the Aggies will have a night game against the Piggy
- 4:31Speaker 1: people at 6 o'clock, either ESPN or the Deuce.
- 4:38Speaker 7: Meanwhile, at 11 or 1145, Vanderbilt, Georgia.
- 4:43Speaker 1: At 11 or 11.45, Alabama, Mississippi State. The 2.30 game
- 4:50Speaker 1: on ABC is Auburn and Tennessee. On the SEC Network, Florida, Missouri, Kentucky,
- 4:59Speaker 1: South Carolina. At 3.15 on the SEC Network. And McNeese
- 5:07Speaker 1: and LSU at 6.45.
- 5:08Speaker 7: Yes, McNeese and LSU. are in prime time.
- 5:15Speaker 1: In the AP College football poll, Texas is number one,
- 5:20Speaker 1: Georgia two, Notre Dame three, Ole Miss four, Indiana five.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Miami undervalued at six, Ohio State seven, Alabama eight, BYU nine,
- 5:33Speaker 1: LSU drops to number 10. Texas Tech up two spots
- 5:38Speaker 1: to 11 after their win against Houston.
- 5:43Speaker 7: Let's see.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Tennessee is 14. Louisville is up seven spots to number
- 5:51Speaker 1: 16 after their win against SMU. The Ponies fall to 22.
- 5:56Speaker 1: The Aggies fall to 23. Mississippi State in the poll
- 6:02Speaker 1: at 24. Houston remains in the poll but drops three
- 6:07Speaker 1: spots from 22 to 25. Florida at 21, Missouri at 19.
- 6:13Speaker 1: There are 10 SEC schools in the top 25 right now.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Pete Golding at Ole Miss was questioned, including by me.
- 6:25Speaker 1: He has now faced five top 25 teams in his
- 6:30Speaker 1: first six games as head coach at Ole Miss.
- 6:35Speaker 7: He is four and one in those games.
- 6:38Speaker 1: He is two and one Against top 10 teams, he's
- 6:43Speaker 1: doing okay. The Rangers and Astros enter the final week
- 6:49Speaker 1: of the regular MLB season, one game apart.
- 6:54Speaker 7: In the woeful AL West.
- 6:57Speaker 1: The Rangers are 500 with six left. The Astros are
- 7:02Speaker 1: 77 and 79, a game back with six left. Remember,
- 7:07Speaker 1: in case of a tie, the Astros have the tiebreaker
- 7:12Speaker 1: by virtue of the season win. The Rangers lost yesterday
- 7:18Speaker 1: to Toronto 7-2. The Astros have lost 10 of their
- 7:24Speaker 1: last 14, including getting swept.
- 7:28Speaker 7: By the Braves.
- 7:29Speaker 1: 4-2 the final yesterday. The Pirates were eliminated from postseason
- 7:38Speaker 1: over the weekend.
- 7:39Speaker 8: They're 79-77.
- 7:40Speaker 1: They'd be leading the West, Their reigning Cy Young winner
- 7:47Speaker 1: Paul Skeens has a 3-9-1 ERA, but that's not terrible.
- 7:53Speaker 1: During a 14-star stretch between the middle of May and
- 7:57Speaker 1: the end of July, he was 5.18 and the Pirates
- 8:00Speaker 1: were 3-11 in those games over the weekend. Skeen said
- 8:07Speaker 1: pitching in the World Baseball Classic may have contributed to
- 8:12Speaker 1: his fluctuating velo, which was.
- 8:14Speaker 7: Down all year. There were a lot of other factors.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't want to put everything on that, but I
- 8:20Speaker 1: feel like that was kind of the root of.
- 8:23Speaker 7: It, said Skeen.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Meanwhile, they're watching weather in Chicago and Boston. The Cubs
- 8:33Speaker 1: and Red Sox. could get smoked by a storm on
- 8:38Speaker 1: the East Coast. The Red Sox locked in a second
- 8:42Speaker 1: AL West wildcard spot, but the Cubs, among three teams
- 8:47Speaker 1: within a game of each other for three NL wildcard spots,
- 8:51Speaker 1: will need all three games to be played to determine
- 8:55Speaker 1: that seeding. The Nor'easter could come to Fenway next weekend, uh,
- 9:02Speaker 1: MLB is going to have an ordeal on its hands
- 9:05Speaker 1: deciding what happens if that weather is a factor. And
- 9:11Speaker 1: the ACC SEC Men's Basketball Challenge tip time games have
- 9:19Speaker 1: been set.
- 9:21Speaker 7: A & M will host.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Stanford for an 8-15 start on ESPNU on December 2nd.
- 9:30Speaker 7: In other words.
- 9:31Speaker 1: It's not exactly their prime game. Prime games, Arkansas at
- 9:40Speaker 1: North Carolina, Texas at Louisville, Florida State at Tennessee, Kentucky
- 9:50Speaker 1: at Virginia, and Alabama at Miami, among others. Also, on
- 9:58Speaker 1: this day, in 1969, listen.
- 10:05Speaker 7: To me, that's a long time ago, right?
- 10:10Speaker 1: That's 57 years ago, according to my Richardson High School math.
- 10:18Speaker 7: The longest punt in.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Professional football history.
- 10:24Speaker 7: The reason I bring that up, you know why I
- 10:26Speaker 7: bring it up. Dr.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Steve O'Neill, local dentist and Aggie, was a rookie for
- 10:34Speaker 1: the New York Jets when he punted the ball at
- 10:37Speaker 1: Mile High Stadium in Denver from his own one-yard line
- 10:43Speaker 1: to the opponent's one-yard line. It's a record that could
- 10:48Speaker 1: possibly be tied, but it'll never be broken in that yardage.
- 10:55Speaker 1: In fact, it hasn't come close to being broken.
- 10:59Speaker 7: So there you go. This date in sports history.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Tomorrow on the show, we're due to visit with Jeff Apter,
- 11:14Speaker 1: who has written a book called about Roy Orbison, who
- 11:19Speaker 1: was just huge in Australia.
- 11:22Speaker 7: Jeff is down under.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Uh, we will, I have to tape that interview tomorrow
- 11:27Speaker 1: evening because there's a 15 hour time.
- 11:30Speaker 7: Difference between us.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Okay.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Just so you'll know that. Um, so I will let
- 11:36Speaker 7: you know when that interview will, will be on. We
- 11:39Speaker 7: will hear.
- 11:40Speaker 1: From Mike Elko, uh, tomorrow. And, um, Some other football
- 11:48Speaker 1: news and notes.
- 11:49Speaker 7: We'll have our high school report. Mallory will be with
- 11:52Speaker 7: us with some entertainment.
- 11:54Speaker 1: When we come back, we are going to visit with
- 11:58Speaker 1: Frank Abrams, author of the book The Slander of Billy
- 12:02Speaker 1: the Kid and the Abrams Tin Types.
- 12:05Speaker 7: After this for Chad Jones Law.
- 12:12Speaker 9: Your A & M LSU Saturday starts at 2.30 here
- 12:15Speaker 9: on the Zone, 11.50 a.m.
- 12:17Speaker 7: And 93.7 FM.
- 12:19Speaker 9: Join us for the Carney's Pub Game Day Show, brought
- 12:21Speaker 9: to you by techsags.com.
- 12:23Speaker 7: It's Bryce, it's Dusty, and hi, it's me, Louie Bellina.
- 12:27Speaker 9: Are you looking for a place to watch the Aggie
- 12:29Speaker 9: football game Saturday night? Carney's Pub voted the best pub
- 12:33Speaker 9: and best patio in the Brazos Valley. Watch A &
- 12:36Speaker 9: M LSU on the Carnytron, the best big screen in Aggieland.
- 12:40Speaker 9: Game day starts 2.30 Saturday here.
- 12:43Speaker 3: On The Zone.
- 12:55Speaker 10: Out in the west Texas town of El Paso, I
- 12:59Speaker 10: fell in love with a Mexican girl. Nighttime would find
- 13:06Speaker 10: me in Rose's Cantina.
- 13:08Speaker 7: We're glad to have you with us, and we want
- 13:10Speaker 7: to jump out.
- 13:12Speaker 1: We're going to jump out to the Players Fund Center
- 13:16Speaker 1: phone line and visit with Frank Abrams. His book is
- 13:20Speaker 1: called The Slander of Billy the Kid and the Abrams
- 13:23Speaker 1: Tin Types. It is a remarkable book that has been,
- 13:29Speaker 1: I guess, research starting in 2011.
- 13:33Speaker 7: Am I close to that, Frank, when you found those pictures?
- 13:37Speaker 11: Well, we didn't know what was there in the pictures
- 13:40Speaker 11: until 2015, Chip. But so much research has gone into
- 13:45Speaker 11: this book. Eight trips across the country and thousands of
- 13:48Speaker 11: hours of research.
- 13:50Speaker 7: How did you know what you had in 2015?
- 13:55Speaker 11: Well, this is the wild part. I bought it in 2011.
- 13:58Speaker 11: It sat on a wall in a rental room. Cowboys, hey,
- 14:02Speaker 11: you know, if it had been sold to me as
- 14:06Speaker 11: a picture of Billy the Kid and the man who
- 14:09Speaker 11: killed him, and someone would have said, here's a picture
- 14:12Speaker 11: of that, I'd have said, well... I'm looking for Elvis
- 14:15Speaker 11: Presley in his casket. I'm sorry. You follow? So I'm
- 14:21Speaker 11: a lawyer. By the way, I went to the University
- 14:23Speaker 11: of Florida, so I have to say go Gators. But
- 14:28Speaker 11: in any event, that's another story. So here we go.
- 14:32Speaker 11: It's 2015. A guy finds Billy the Kid supposedly playing croquet.
- 14:39Speaker 11: And I Google it and I look up Billy the Kid.
- 14:42Speaker 11: First I see Pat Garrett. I look at my picture.
- 14:44Speaker 11: There's five cowboys in my picture. I said, that's Pat
- 14:47Speaker 11: Garrett to my wife. And I was right. And then
- 14:52Speaker 11: over in the back is a guy with a younger
- 14:55Speaker 11: guy with an Adam's apple pronounced and a cardigan sweater
- 15:01Speaker 11: and this goofy look. And it's Billy the Kid. And yeah, Chip,
- 15:06Speaker 11: that's how it all started.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Now, you found this at a flea market, right, this
- 15:12Speaker 1: tintype photo?
- 15:13Speaker 11: That's correct. There were four other photos with that. And
- 15:18Speaker 11: one of the photos is the guy who made Billy famous,
- 15:21Speaker 11: a guy named Ash Upson. He wrote a book called
- 15:24Speaker 11: An Authentic Life of Billy the Kid, and that's what
- 15:28Speaker 11: made Billy famous. Here's the wild part, Chip. The names
- 15:31Speaker 11: are on the tintype. On Garrett's vest is written Pat Garrett,
- 15:35Speaker 11: and my handwriting expert said that Pat wrote his name there.
- 15:40Speaker 11: On Billy is written Billy and the Kid. There's a
- 15:44Speaker 11: date on it, 8-2-80, 1880, which is when they would
- 15:50Speaker 11: have been together out there in Fort Sumner. And next,
- 15:53Speaker 11: that picture of Ash Upson has Ash scratched on the back.
- 15:58Speaker 7: So you had not done.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I'm assuming, a lot, if any, research on Billy the
- 16:07Speaker 1: Kid before you found out who were in these.
- 16:10Speaker 7: Photos, right?
- 16:11Speaker 11: Heck, I was from Florida, then we moved up to,
- 16:15Speaker 11: I ran for judge down there then. Almost made it,
- 16:19Speaker 11: but I ended up in Asheville, North Carolina in 2004. And,
- 16:26Speaker 11: you know, growing up in Miami, you're not there with
- 16:30Speaker 11: all of the Wild West. figures and pictures. I'll tell
- 16:33Speaker 11: you this. Had I grown up in the West, I
- 16:37Speaker 11: would have recognized Pat Garrett and Billy probably immediately.
- 16:42Speaker 1: The question is, why were they having their picture taken together?
- 16:47Speaker 1: Because most people understand that it was Pat Garrett, who
- 16:53Speaker 1: was sheriff, that tracked down and killed Billy the Kid.
- 16:59Speaker 11: Yeah, the great historical fabrication that Garrett is this big hero,
- 17:08Speaker 11: and he goes and tracks down. And this book that
- 17:11Speaker 11: he wrote, that actually Ash Upson wrote for him, Garrett
- 17:15Speaker 11: was almost illiterate, according to reports. But I won't get
- 17:21Speaker 11: into that. It's another subject. But this book paints Garrett
- 17:23Speaker 11: as this big-time hero. And what it does is it's misleading.
- 17:29Speaker 11: In the picture, they're all drinking and they're smoking cigars.
- 17:34Speaker 11: They were all friends. In fact, this is the part
- 17:38Speaker 11: of history that's completely ignored. Garrett was approached to basically
- 17:46Speaker 11: try to end Billy's cattle rustling. That's what was getting
- 17:50Speaker 11: people angry at the time. And Garrett was scared to
- 17:55Speaker 11: death of Billy. reports are that billy could ride past
- 18:01Speaker 11: a fence full of pigeons or doves and literally shoot
- 18:06Speaker 11: the heads off from that full gallop that's so garrett
- 18:11Speaker 11: did not want to face billy okay so there's some
- 18:15Speaker 11: talk there's Two possibilities. One, either this was a wedding
- 18:20Speaker 11: or a celebration of some sort, or two, there was
- 18:23Speaker 11: a time that Garrett tried to approach Billy and say
- 18:27Speaker 11: to Billy, hey, look, why don't you go down to
- 18:30Speaker 11: Mexico and just lay low? And after a while, things
- 18:35Speaker 11: will just go away. Garrett did not want to face
- 18:40Speaker 11: Billy one-on-one.
- 18:42Speaker 1: You uncovered some... some unbelievable information in your research. And
- 18:48Speaker 1: I think the main issue is that when you tried
- 18:52Speaker 1: to present this, what could be claimed as historical information
- 18:59Speaker 1: in what Billy did and how many people he killed
- 19:03Speaker 1: and how they were killed and why they were killed,
- 19:07Speaker 1: you didn't get a lot of interest.
- 19:08Speaker 7: In fact, you got a lot of blowback from that,
- 19:11Speaker 7: didn't you?
- 19:12Speaker 11: Yeah, I did. You know, it's funny. The people who
- 19:15Speaker 11: control Wild West history, I call them the self-anointed protectors
- 19:21Speaker 11: of Wild West history. They are self-anointed because who told
- 19:24Speaker 11: them they could be the protectors of Wild West? history
- 19:28Speaker 11: they're all like well there ain't supposed to be another
- 19:31Speaker 11: picture of billy the kid you know but here we
- 19:35Speaker 11: go 40 years i'm a federal and state criminal defense
- 19:39Speaker 11: attorney i got you know when when they were recognized
- 19:42Speaker 11: chip i said i'm going to get the top forensic
- 19:47Speaker 11: experts in the country in fact uh handwriting expert, Kurt Baggett,
- 19:53Speaker 11: is out of Texas, and I got the top people
- 19:56Speaker 11: in the country. So that's where it stands. It's like this. Well,
- 20:03Speaker 11: It's saying it's not supposed to be, but ignoring scientific evidence,
- 20:09Speaker 11: that's just not the way they should be acting. They
- 20:15Speaker 11: should be embracing it.
- 20:17Speaker 1: So Billy was no saint. By the way, that wasn't
- 20:21Speaker 1: his real name, was it?
- 20:23Speaker 11: No, it wasn't. Actually, his born name was Henry McCarty.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yes.
- 20:27Speaker 11: Yeah, Henry McCarty, his mother married this guy named Antrim.
- 20:34Speaker 11: Sometimes later on he was called Henry Antrim. And then
- 20:38Speaker 11: Billy used to read old detective novels. He was a
- 20:41Speaker 11: sharp guy, really sharp. And he could speak fluent Spanish
- 20:46Speaker 11: as well. But we think he just basically invented the
- 20:51Speaker 11: name William Bonney because I guess it It's something that
- 20:56Speaker 11: sounds exotic or something that he might have read in
- 21:00Speaker 11: some sort of a novel or dime novel or book
- 21:04Speaker 11: of the time.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Explain to our listeners what the Lincoln County War was.
- 21:09Speaker 11: Okay, well, Billy is working for this guy named John Tunstall.
- 21:13Speaker 11: He's an Englishman. All right. And he's got a store
- 21:16Speaker 11: across the street from these gentlemen. Well, I'll just say
- 21:22Speaker 11: Dolan and Murphy, who who have this business and they
- 21:27Speaker 11: don't want competition. But there's an underlying issue there, too.
- 21:31Speaker 11: They're Irish. And Tunstall, Billy's boss, is English. And somehow
- 21:37Speaker 11: there's some bad blood at that time between the Irish
- 21:41Speaker 11: and the English. Yeah, go figure. And they didn't want
- 21:46Speaker 11: the competition. So there was this corrupt sheriff who was
- 21:50Speaker 11: the muscle, William Brady. And they arranged for Billy's boss
- 21:56Speaker 11: to be murdered. Billy was a witness. And he was
- 22:00Speaker 11: riding into town with a complaint. They arranged... through this
- 22:04Speaker 11: lawsuit to seize his property. It had nothing to do
- 22:08Speaker 11: with him. It had to do with this lawyer. Anyway,
- 22:12Speaker 11: it gets complicated, except I'll sort of make it simple.
- 22:16Speaker 11: Billy's boss was murdered, John Tunstall. And Billy and the
- 22:20Speaker 11: people who worked for his boss were called the regulators,
- 22:24Speaker 11: and that's what started the war. They decided that they
- 22:28Speaker 11: weren't going to just have someone murder their boss, and
- 22:33Speaker 11: they ended up killing this gentleman Brady, and then it
- 22:36Speaker 11: all morphed into something much, much, much bigger. At one point, Chip,
- 22:41Speaker 11: they said that Main Street in Lincoln County, New Mexico,
- 22:45Speaker 11: was the most dangerous street in America.
- 22:48Speaker 1: So Billy was in jail, right? He was put in
- 22:54Speaker 1: jail and was promised, as you write, his freedom, correct?
- 22:59Speaker 11: He was. That's correct. He was. And, in fact, the
- 23:03Speaker 11: governors at the time, the governor, Lew Wallace, the territorial governor,
- 23:08Speaker 11: before it became a state, at any time, by the way,
- 23:10Speaker 11: during the proceedings, he could have pardoned Billy. He promised
- 23:15Speaker 11: that Billy would have a pardon in his pocket. If
- 23:17Speaker 11: Billy talked about the Lincoln County War, Billy did talk
- 23:21Speaker 11: about the Lincoln County War. And something like 50 people
- 23:25Speaker 11: were indicted based on Billy's testimony. But Lew Wallace, the governor,
- 23:29Speaker 11: he was beholden, I guess, to the cattle interests. And
- 23:34Speaker 11: he never kept his part of the bargain. And Billy
- 23:37Speaker 11: ended up in jail in Lincoln County.
- 23:39Speaker 1: One of the things that was true in the movie
- 23:41Speaker 1: Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, which I just I
- 23:44Speaker 1: love that movie with Chris Christopherson.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Sure.
- 23:48Speaker 7: Billy killed a couple of.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Deputies escaping from the Lincoln County Jail, did he not?
- 23:55Speaker 11: Olinger and Bell, yeah. Bob, that's a really interesting story.
- 24:00Speaker 11: Bob Olinger used to poke his 10-gauge shotgun at Billy
- 24:03Speaker 11: and say, son, the boy who feels the end of
- 24:07Speaker 11: this shotgun is going to hurt, you know?
- 24:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:11Speaker 12: Okay.
- 24:12Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:12Speaker 11: Olinger didn't realize he was going to be the one.
- 24:15Speaker 11: One day, Billy's gone out. He somehow gets a gun.
- 24:19Speaker 11: There's some debate on where he gets the gun. But
- 24:21Speaker 11: Olinger's across the street, and he's with some other inmates,
- 24:26Speaker 11: and they're eating over there. And then they hear some rustle. Apparently,
- 24:30Speaker 11: Billy had gotten a gun. The first guy killed was
- 24:33Speaker 11: a guy named Bell, running away from Billy. And then
- 24:36Speaker 11: Olinger comes across the street and sees Billy hanging out
- 24:40Speaker 11: the window with that same 10-gauge shotgun that Olinger's been
- 24:44Speaker 11: poking him with. And the last words that Bob Olinger
- 24:48Speaker 11: hears is, hey, Bob, and the rest, as they say,
- 24:53Speaker 11: is history.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Sam Peckinpah, being Sam Peckinpah at the time, had a
- 24:59Speaker 1: shotgun that was filled with dimes and filled that scene
- 25:03Speaker 1: in slow motion, probably the most talked about scene in
- 25:06Speaker 1: that movie, I'm guessing.
- 25:08Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 25:09Speaker 7: That probably, that probably did not happen.
- 25:14Speaker 11: Well, that's interesting. I've heard both. I've heard that he
- 25:18Speaker 11: didn't say, Hey Bob, that he just basically kaboom.
- 25:22Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 11: And that was, that was the end of it.
- 25:24Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 25:25Speaker 11: I have, I have heard that as well.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Uh, That was also Bob Dylan was in that movie. So,
- 25:32Speaker 1: I mean, there was a lot to be said to
- 25:34Speaker 1: that movie. I'm not sure just how much of it
- 25:37Speaker 1: was fact as you sort things out, Frank.
- 25:41Speaker 11: As I try to sort things out, you know. Movies
- 25:45Speaker 11: like Billy the Kid versus Dracula. How can I sit here?
- 25:49Speaker 11: I mean, where am I going with this, you know?
- 25:53Speaker 11: So my book, The Slander of Billy the Kid, not
- 25:56Speaker 11: only talks about the fact that they made him out
- 25:59Speaker 11: to be this person that he wasn't, but also I
- 26:05Speaker 11: think some people have made some money off of Billy
- 26:08Speaker 11: the Kid. What do you think, Chip?
- 26:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you know, the phrase is, and you
- 26:17Speaker 1: talk about this, is when fact becomes legend, print the legend.
- 26:21Speaker 11: Yeah, that's right. That's right. You know, if there's a
- 26:23Speaker 11: dollar to be made. But you know what the wild
- 26:26Speaker 11: part about it is? Billy disdained people, but he disdained
- 26:30Speaker 11: people who would show up with these shiny boots and,
- 26:35Speaker 11: you know, these faux cowboys, I guess you'd call it.
- 26:39Speaker 11: You know, he despised that. And Billy didn't walk around
- 26:42Speaker 11: with these big sombreros and shiny guns.
- 26:47Speaker 7: He worked on ranches. I mean, he worked a lot
- 26:49Speaker 7: on ranches, did he not?
- 26:51Speaker 15: He did.
- 26:52Speaker 11: And you see, real cowboys don't wear it. I'm going
- 26:55Speaker 11: to say this, but some people might not be happy.
- 26:59Speaker 11: In Billy's estimation, real cowboys didn't dress like that. It's expensive.
- 27:03Speaker 11: Real cowboys had dirt under their fingernails. You could tell
- 27:07Speaker 11: a real cowboy.
- 27:09Speaker 1: How much is this tintype photo worth since you have
- 27:14Speaker 1: basically proven everything you can prove that, in fact, Billy
- 27:19Speaker 1: the Kid and Pat Garrett were in the same picture together?
- 27:23Speaker 11: Yeah, well, that's a good question, Chip. How much money
- 27:25Speaker 11: do you have in your wallet right now?
- 27:27Speaker 7: Well, you paid, I think, $ 10 for it, didn't you?
- 27:30Speaker 11: Yeah, I paid $ 10. And it's funny, I've never taken a...
- 27:35Speaker 11: People have written that it's worth quite a bit of money.
- 27:39Speaker 11: There's a lot of people... I have never taken the position.
- 27:42Speaker 11: I have never taken the position that, whoa, I'm going
- 27:45Speaker 11: to make a quick payday and sell it. My interest
- 27:48Speaker 11: has always been in the history, but more than that,
- 27:52Speaker 11: and I want you to understand something, too, that anyone
- 27:58Speaker 11: who sits there and says, well, I'm taking a position
- 28:00Speaker 11: and it's going to be worth zillions of dollars and
- 28:03Speaker 11: I've got to sell it to retire or else I've
- 28:06Speaker 11: got to sell the goat or something like that. If
- 28:10Speaker 11: you take that position, it's going to come back and
- 28:13Speaker 11: haunt you. number one. And, and number two, I'm doing
- 28:17Speaker 11: okay for my, I mean, I'm an attorney for 40 years.
- 28:20Speaker 11: You know, sometimes my wife screams, we need a new
- 28:23Speaker 11: car or something like that, but we're okay. Everything, everything drives.
- 28:29Speaker 11: I'm in no big hurry. And you know, Hey, here
- 28:32Speaker 11: I am.
- 28:33Speaker 1: So what kind of hope, if any, do you have
- 28:37Speaker 1: that this book could change a little bit of the
- 28:42Speaker 1: history of Pat Garrett, Billy the Kid.
- 28:45Speaker 11: I have high hopes. And, you know, just being on
- 28:48Speaker 11: this radio show is part of it. The more people
- 28:52Speaker 11: begin to understand how history has really thrown them a curveball,
- 28:58Speaker 11: they'll see. I think this book, and I've heard this
- 29:01Speaker 11: from other sources, too. This is, I think, one of
- 29:05Speaker 11: the best books ever. And I did, and you can
- 29:09Speaker 11: see from the research, I, eight trips across the country,
- 29:13Speaker 11: thousands of hours, literally thousands of hours worth of research.
- 29:17Speaker 11: I put there what I think Billy would have wanted
- 29:21Speaker 11: me to write. But more than that, what I wrote
- 29:24Speaker 11: was factual and backed up with my research.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Unlike 9 out of 10 Billy the Kid stories in
- 29:32Speaker 1: the last 150 years, correct?
- 29:34Speaker 11: Unlike, exactly. And, you know, as much as you like
- 29:38Speaker 11: Sam Peck and all these great movies... about Billy the Kid,
- 29:41Speaker 11: you know, for gosh sakes, young guns, it's all entertainment.
- 29:45Speaker 11: It's entertainment. I'm not going to argue with entertainment. People
- 29:48Speaker 11: have the right to be entertained. But what I wrote
- 29:53Speaker 11: was something that I could back up through historical fact.
- 29:59Speaker 11: And that was my goal from the beginning. And it
- 30:04Speaker 11: had to be. It had to be. I found something, Chip,
- 30:08Speaker 11: that wasn't supposed to exist. But if I was going
- 30:13Speaker 11: to talk about it, I knew I couldn't come across
- 30:17Speaker 11: as somebody who was just quoting legends and citing things
- 30:23Speaker 11: that just weren't real.
- 30:25Speaker 7: How can people get this book, Frank?
- 30:29Speaker 11: Well, it's going to be out. It's in the coming months,
- 30:31Speaker 11: so pay attention. Pay attention, and it's going to be
- 30:35Speaker 11: in the coming months. So it's still in the phase,
- 30:39Speaker 11: the review phase. But I'm hopeful that within the next
- 30:43Speaker 11: three or four months that you'll be able to find it.
- 30:46Speaker 7: Well, I'll certainly let everybody know what it does.
- 30:48Speaker 1: It is a really, really fun book to read and
- 30:52Speaker 1: just an amazing story that started at a flea market.
- 30:56Speaker 1: So it doesn't get much better than that.
- 30:59Speaker 11: Well, thank you so much. And thank you for letting
- 31:01Speaker 11: me on your wonderful show.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Thanks, Frank.
- 31:04Speaker 7: I appreciate it. Thank you so much.
- 31:06Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 31:07Speaker 16: Bye.
- 31:08Speaker 1: That's Frank Abrams, and the book is called The Slander
- 31:12Speaker 1: of Billy the Kid and the Abrams Tin Types. I
- 31:19Speaker 1: think we're probably the only media show, radio, TV, podcast,
- 31:26Speaker 1: interweb in America that visited with Frank today about this book.
- 31:33Speaker 7: I'm proud to say that because it's really interesting.
- 31:37Speaker 1: The most interesting part, the people who, quote, are members
- 31:42Speaker 1: of the Western society and all of that, they don't
- 31:45Speaker 1: want to hear any of this stuff. They just blew
- 31:48Speaker 1: this guy off. When he started asking questions like, have
- 31:52Speaker 1: you researched this? Do you know this as a fact?
- 31:57Speaker 1: It's like, hey, don't mess with our story about Billy
- 32:01Speaker 1: the Kid. Billy the Kid's an icon, so don't mess
- 32:05Speaker 1: with that story. I know you don't believe this, but
- 32:11Speaker 1: except for this show, you can't believe everything you hear.
- 32:16Speaker 7: In the media. I'm just saying.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Sevchek Service Center, 2200 Longmire, just down from the post
- 32:23Speaker 1: office in College Station, is open.
- 32:26Speaker 7: Until 6 o'clock right now. I'm looking at the clouds.
- 32:29Speaker 7: The reason I was looking at the clouds is.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Because if it ever does rain again, your rubber windshield
- 32:36Speaker 1: whoppers have probably just been burnt all to pieces. And
- 32:39Speaker 1: you haven't used them in so long, you don't know
- 32:41Speaker 1: that they work. You can drive in there at the
- 32:44Speaker 1: gasoline pumps.
- 32:45Speaker 7: I call it the triage. And they'll put them on
- 32:48Speaker 7: for you.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Because it seems like a simple job. But if you're
- 32:52Speaker 1: like somebody like me, it's not a simple job. It's
- 32:55Speaker 1: about a 14-cuss word job. And it probably takes about
- 32:58Speaker 1: 30 minutes. They can do it in five minutes. There's
- 33:02Speaker 1: things like that. They've been, Seb Chex has been taking
- 33:06Speaker 1: care of cars and trucks and people all over the
- 33:08Speaker 1: Brazos Valley for well more than half a century. And
- 33:12Speaker 1: Pat is carrying on that family tradition. They're open 7
- 33:16Speaker 1: to 6, Monday through Friday, 7 to 4 on Saturdays.
- 33:21Speaker 1: It's Seb Chex Service Center, 2200 Long Margin, just down
- 33:24Speaker 1: from the post office in College Station.
- 33:27Speaker 15: I'm Chad Jones. We know sports injuries hurt. And so
- 33:30Speaker 15: do injuries from car wrecks. But you didn't sign up
- 33:32Speaker 15: to be in a car wreck with someone who wasn't
- 33:34Speaker 15: paying attention.
- 33:35Speaker 14: It was their fault.
- 33:36Speaker 15: And now you're left to deal with the consequences. You
- 33:38Speaker 15: need to see a doctor and you're missing work. Chad

- 35:34Speaker 1: Wowzers, brought to you by Chad Jones Law and Zwirneman Flooring.
- 35:39Speaker 7: Our congratulations to Chris Ault.
- 35:42Speaker 1: He was the only picker among the thousands of you
- 35:46Speaker 1: that got nine out of ten this week.
- 35:48Speaker 7: That's some good picking, my friends. I didn't, again.
- 35:54Speaker 1: He's won himself a $ 50 gift certificate to Rudy's Barbecue
- 35:59Speaker 1: as the weekly winner.
- 36:01Speaker 7: We're on to week four. The games are up.
- 36:04Speaker 1: I've already made my picks for this week. A &
- 36:07Speaker 1: M LSU, that is the tiebreaker game. Oh, the battle
- 36:12Speaker 1: at College Station. Consolidated at College Station. Elgin and Rudder.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Texas and Tennessee. Ole Miss and Florida. Utah, Iowa State. Nebraska,
- 36:26Speaker 1: Michigan State. Clemson and Cal. The Texans and the Colts.
- 36:33Speaker 1: The Ravens and the Cowboys. There's 10 games there. You
- 36:39Speaker 1: need to pick them between now and 5 p.m.
- 36:43Speaker 7: Friday afternoon. This is what we do every week.
- 36:47Speaker 1: It is America's Most Loved Football Pick'em Contest. Somebody is
- 36:51Speaker 1: going to get their name engraved on the cup. And
- 36:56Speaker 1: you may luck out and win a weekly prize. Congratulations
- 36:58Speaker 1: to Chris Ault. We called him and left a message.
- 37:01Speaker 1: If you know him, say, hey, they're talking about you
- 37:04Speaker 1: on the radio. Friday's Fearless Football Forecast Contest, a division
- 37:07Speaker 1: of Sports Talk, brought to you by.
- 37:09Speaker 7: Zwergman Flooring and Chad Jones Law. All right.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Most of you who care, by the way, writer's roundtable
- 37:18Speaker 1: coming up in less than 30 minutes. Most of you
- 37:21Speaker 1: who care know that the Aggies got beat on Saturday.
- 37:24Speaker 1: They didn't just get beat. They got dominated. They got beaten.
- 37:31Speaker 1: And I know the quarterback's getting all the blame. But
- 37:36Speaker 1: he didn't do special teams. He didn't do defense. He
- 37:41Speaker 1: didn't do all the offense. I know he didn't have
- 37:43Speaker 1: a good game. I'm not saying he did. It was
- 37:46Speaker 1: a total team effort. Here's Marcel Reed after the game.
- 37:52Speaker 20: Marcel, what do you feel like was the biggest trouble
- 37:55Speaker 20: you guys had on offense today, just not being able
- 37:57Speaker 20: to get it going today?
- 37:59Speaker 21: Yeah, I think we just didn't finish. We moved the
- 38:01Speaker 21: ball pretty well early. We got in the red zone
- 38:05Speaker 21: and didn't capitalize, so that was the biggest thing. That
- 38:09Speaker 21: gave them some momentum swing early in the game, and
- 38:12Speaker 21: they held on to it.
- 38:13Speaker 14: So, yeah, we just got to finish.
- 38:15Speaker 20: Elko had said that you're maybe feeling some of the pressure.
- 38:18Speaker 20: I'm just curious just what the first three weeks of
- 38:20Speaker 20: this season have been like for you and just kind
- 38:23Speaker 20: of how you're handling that.
- 38:25Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 38:27Speaker 21: You know, I think the first three weeks have been okay.
- 38:32Speaker 21: We got to clean up some things, obviously. But, you know,
- 38:38Speaker 21: new system. And, you know, we got to execute better.
- 38:43Speaker 21: I mean, honestly, it's up to us.
- 38:45Speaker 14: It's up to me.
- 38:45Speaker 21: And I got to take ownership of all this stuff. So,
- 38:48Speaker 21: you know, we got to do better preparing and coming
- 38:52Speaker 21: out starting fast and just maintaining it.
- 38:55Speaker 4: Front row with Travis on the right-hand side.
- 38:57Speaker 8: Hey, Marcel, I believe it was the last play of
- 38:59Speaker 8: the first half and then on the fourth down in
- 39:01Speaker 8: the third quarter, underthrown. What kind of walked through that
- 39:04Speaker 8: play and what would you like to do in those
- 39:07Speaker 8: situations next time a little bit better?
- 39:09Speaker 21: Yeah, I just got to get my foot down, my
- 39:11Speaker 21: back foot down, keep my knee bent and make the throw.
- 39:14Speaker 14: I missed a lot and those are ones I wish
- 39:17Speaker 14: I had back and just.
- 39:19Speaker 21: Got to get back and kind of make sure I
- 39:21Speaker 21: get those throws down so they're layups for me, but
- 39:24Speaker 21: You know, those should those should be throws that I
- 39:27Speaker 21: make easily and I didn't make them and they were
- 39:29Speaker 21: costly so I got to fix it.
- 39:31Speaker 8: And did you like the look of what you got
- 39:33Speaker 8: on that that fourth down play?
- 39:35Speaker 14: What play is that specifically?
- 39:38Speaker 8: The fourth down in the third quarter. The short throw?
- 39:41Speaker 21: Yeah yeah yeah I like the look for sure you
- 39:44Speaker 21: know it was to Rio right I think Rio I
- 39:47Speaker 21: got open set it down and He has some space.
- 39:49Speaker 14: I just got to plug him so he can get going.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Way in the back with Tyler.
- 39:54Speaker 13: Marcel, after a game like that, what do you tell
- 39:57Speaker 13: the guys in the locker room?
- 40:00Speaker 14: We got out of the way. It's a learning experience.
- 40:03Speaker 21: We just got to come back even stronger. We have
- 40:05Speaker 21: a big opponent next week in a hostile environment. We
- 40:09Speaker 21: got to get right back to work starting tomorrow and
- 40:11Speaker 21: prepare our minds for going to Baton Rouge.
- 40:15Speaker 13: How much do you feel like Jay Bateman's familiarity with
- 40:17Speaker 13: you and just this offense helped in Kentucky's defensive plan?
- 40:23Speaker 21: Honestly, I don't think it helped that much. I just
- 40:25Speaker 21: don't think we executed the way we needed to. Even
- 40:29Speaker 21: if it were to be a problem, that's a defense
- 40:31Speaker 21: that I've seen a lot. We should have been able
- 40:33Speaker 21: to execute pretty well. I've been seeing that defense for
- 40:37Speaker 21: two years.
- 40:39Speaker 14: We just got to do better. Right side, second row
- 40:43Speaker 14: with Landon. Marcel, you mentioned the preparation this week.
- 40:46Speaker 20: Was there any major differences that you noticed in your
- 40:49Speaker 20: guys' game preparation this week compared to your first two weeks?
- 40:53Speaker 21: No, I don't think there was any difference this specific week.
- 40:56Speaker 21: I think, honestly, all the weeks have been the same,
- 41:01Speaker 21: but I don't think the weeks have been good enough.
- 41:03Speaker 21: We definitely have to fix that, especially being an SEC
- 41:05Speaker 21: ball now. We got one loss in conference already, so
- 41:09Speaker 21: we don't need any more. We can't afford any more,
- 41:11Speaker 21: so we got to get it fixed quick.
- 41:12Speaker 13: And with that, how do you help prepare the guys
- 41:15Speaker 13: and get practice up to the standard that you're looking for?
- 41:18Speaker 14: Yeah, I just got to be a leader. I got
- 41:19Speaker 14: to be vocal.
- 41:19Speaker 21: And I got to make sure everybody is doing what
- 41:22Speaker 21: they're supposed to do, including me. And it starts with me.
- 41:24Speaker 21: So I got to do my part. I got to
- 41:27Speaker 21: be the one who's accountable, dependable, so that everybody else
- 41:30Speaker 21: is doing the same thing.
- 41:31Speaker 14: Left side with Matthew. Obviously, you talked about the disappointment.
- 41:36Speaker 22: What has got to be the biggest thing that you
- 41:38Speaker 22: all got to fix come this next week?
- 41:42Speaker 14: The biggest thing I have to fix is making the
- 41:44Speaker 14: easy throws. I think.
- 41:47Speaker 21: The biggest thing as a team is we just need
- 41:49Speaker 21: to everybody do their 111. It's always just one thing
- 41:55Speaker 21: that goes wrong. Whenever we're clicking, we're clicking. It's the
- 41:59Speaker 21: greatest offense in the world, but when we're not, it's horrible,
- 42:02Speaker 21: so we've got to fix it quick.
- 42:03Speaker 14: First row with Carter.
- 42:04Speaker 22: Marcel, what challenges did present you not having Ashton and
- 42:09Speaker 22: then Terry going out on the first play of the game?
- 42:12Speaker 21: Yeah, obviously it hurts to see that. Knowing Ashton was
- 42:17Speaker 21: already out of the game and then Terry goes down
- 42:19Speaker 21: first play, it's not ideal. But we've got some athletic guys,
- 42:24Speaker 21: great receivers behind us, and they're ready to come in
- 42:28Speaker 21: and work. So it's always been a next man up
- 42:30Speaker 21: thing for Texas A & M football, and we just
- 42:33Speaker 21: got to trust those guys to do what they can do.
- 42:35Speaker 22: I was just going to ask Coach Elko had talked
- 42:38Speaker 22: about it's kind of like a pitcher that can't throw
- 42:41Speaker 22: a strike with you. Do you feel like it's like that,
- 42:44Speaker 22: and how do you get out of maybe a mental
- 42:47Speaker 22: bind like that?
- 42:48Speaker 14: Yeah, it definitely felt like that.
- 42:50Speaker 21: That was a good analogy, and I think the way
- 42:53Speaker 21: for me to get out of that is just kind
- 42:55Speaker 21: of calm myself down and obviously tell myself I can
- 42:57Speaker 21: make those throws because I know I can make those
- 42:59Speaker 21: throws and just do it.
- 43:02Speaker 14: I got out of rhythm. I think... my base was bad,
- 43:06Speaker 14: and I got to fix that.
- 43:08Speaker 4: Left side with Alex.
- 43:11Speaker 20: Looks like you went over and said something to Terry
- 43:13Speaker 20: as he was getting carted off.
- 43:14Speaker 14: What did you maybe tell him? Have you gotten to
- 43:17Speaker 14: talk to him since? How's he doing?
- 43:19Speaker 21: Yeah, I just told him I loved him. Like I said,
- 43:22Speaker 21: it hurt me to see that first play. After all
- 43:26Speaker 21: the work Terry's put in, he's been a really big
- 43:30Speaker 21: guy for us. Had a great game last week, and
- 43:32Speaker 21: we're expecting a big game for him this week, but yeah,
- 43:35Speaker 21: he went down, and yeah, I just told him that,
- 43:37Speaker 21: you know, we got his back, we loved him, and
- 43:40Speaker 21: I did see him just a second ago before I
- 43:41Speaker 21: came in here, and then I think, you know, he's
- 43:45Speaker 21: getting looked at tomorrow for sure, so yeah, whatever happens,
- 43:49Speaker 21: that's what it is, so.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Peter, and then we're going to wrap things up with Tony.
- 43:54Speaker 14: What happened on that fourth quarter interception? Tried to force
- 44:00Speaker 14: a ball.
- 44:02Speaker 21: Yeah, I think, you know, we were down two scores
- 44:04Speaker 21: at the time, and try to make a big play
- 44:06Speaker 21: that probably didn't need to make in the moment but
- 44:09Speaker 21: I tried to make so you know can't force it
- 44:11Speaker 21: next time so that's all and you've talked both about
- 44:15Speaker 21: physical things with your throwing motion as well as from
- 44:17Speaker 21: the mental side does it feel more physical or mental
- 44:19Speaker 21: with you right now.
- 44:21Speaker 14: Right now it definitely feels.
- 44:24Speaker 21: More mental and I can control that so I got
- 44:27Speaker 21: to fix that immediately and you know just build my
- 44:31Speaker 21: confidence back up not like I lost it or anything
- 44:34Speaker 21: but um you know this one definitely hurt like it's
- 44:37Speaker 21: it's not fun losing and it's a conference game but
- 44:40Speaker 21: you know i can make those throws and i will
- 44:42Speaker 21: make those throws down the stretch.
- 44:44Speaker 4: Well wrapping up tony.
- 44:46Speaker 8: Marcel part of what uh elko said was just the
- 44:49Speaker 8: two minute offense when you guys are in up tempo
- 44:51Speaker 8: is when you kind of play your best football would
- 44:53Speaker 8: you kind of agree with that assessment and and maybe
- 44:55Speaker 8: why do.
- 44:55Speaker 14: You find that time so advantageous for.
- 44:57Speaker 21: You yeah um I think we just kind of keep
- 45:01Speaker 21: the defense off balance, and I think that's a good
- 45:03Speaker 21: thing about our offense.
- 45:05Speaker 14: But, you know, obviously we tried to go tempo. It's
- 45:08Speaker 14: hard to.
- 45:08Speaker 21: Sometimes when you lose a couple guys and you're short
- 45:12Speaker 21: on bodies. But, yeah, we were doing a good job
- 45:15Speaker 21: with the tempo. And, you know, like I said in
- 45:17Speaker 21: the beginning, we just got to finish the drives.
- 45:19Speaker 1: All right, that's Marcel Reed after the game on Saturday.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Coming up, We're going to hear from Ole Miss coach

- 46:46Speaker 23: The Houston Astros got swept in their series with a
- 46:49Speaker 23: loss to the Atlanta Braves yesterday.
- 46:52Speaker 7: Final score, 4-2.
- 46:53Speaker 23: The Astros struck first with Jose Altuve hitting a solo
- 46:57Speaker 23: home run in the fourth inning.
- 46:59Speaker 24: Was this season for you to move up to double-A
- 47:01Speaker 24: for Chris Christie as Altuve hits one to the wall
- 47:05Speaker 24: and goes!
- 47:06Speaker 23: In the sixths, the Braves exploded for four runs, putting
- 47:10Speaker 23: the Astros down three. Yainir Diaz would cut the deficit
- 47:13Speaker 23: to two with a solo blast in the eighth, but
- 47:16Speaker 23: it wasn't enough to complete the rally.
- 47:20Speaker 7: That's hit pretty well to Wright, sending Hicklin all the
- 47:22Speaker 7: way back. He jumps and it's gone!
- 47:25Speaker 23: The Astros hit the road to face the Seattle Mariners
- 47:28Speaker 23: tomorrow night. First pitch at 840, coverage on the Space
- 47:32Speaker 23: City Home Network. With your Houston Astros report, I'm Adam C.

- 48:11Speaker 6: You've painted up your lips and rolled and curled your
- 48:14Speaker 6: tinted hair.
- 48:19Speaker 7: Hey, thanks for joining us on a Monday.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Writer's Roundtable coming your way here in about 15 minutes.
- 48:27Speaker 1: I'm sure we'll talk some college football.
- 48:29Speaker 7: That's one thing I know.
- 48:31Speaker 1: So stay tuned for that. Speaking of college football, Lane's
- 48:35Speaker 1: return to Oxford. Was not good for Lane. But my gosh,
- 48:41Speaker 1: what a scene Saturday night. What an unbelievable scene Saturday night.
- 48:47Speaker 7: And what a game.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Normally all that buildup and hype, it never delivers. But
- 48:53Speaker 1: this one delivered. Tied myself on the back. I picked
- 48:59Speaker 1: Ole Miss. LSU was favored. I picked a quarterback. And
- 49:04Speaker 1: that quarterback, He's jumped to the top of my Heisman
- 49:07Speaker 1: list right now. Here's the head coach, Pete Golding.
- 49:12Speaker 25: Yeah, I mean, what an awesome weekend, you know, environment
- 49:15Speaker 25: in Oxford. The community did an unbelievable job, and we
- 49:18Speaker 25: had the concert Thursday night. so many things were going
- 49:20Speaker 25: on game day and all that and just really proud
- 49:22Speaker 25: of this building um from keith to glenn you know
- 49:26Speaker 25: allowed us to keep our focus on what was important
- 49:28Speaker 25: i thought our staff and our coaches did an outstanding
- 49:30Speaker 25: job and more importantly i thought our players really stayed
- 49:33Speaker 25: focused and worked their butts off and handled the right
- 49:35Speaker 25: way and did it with class and That's kind of
- 49:38Speaker 25: what I just told them, man. When you work your
- 49:39Speaker 25: butt off and you're talented and you keep the good
- 49:41Speaker 25: word first, good things happen to you. It took all
- 49:45Speaker 25: of us tonight. A lot of guys stepped up and
- 49:47Speaker 25: played really well, so just really proud of them.
- 49:49Speaker 8: Pete, I know you guys were kind of playing down
- 49:51Speaker 8: the lane stuff all week, but does this one mean
- 49:53Speaker 8: a little bit more, and I guess what kind of
- 49:55Speaker 8: emotions are you feeling right now?
- 49:57Speaker 25: You know, I just told our team in there, I
- 49:59Speaker 25: was like, look, I don't think anybody came.
- 50:01Speaker 4: Here to beat LSU.
- 50:03Speaker 25: I mean, that's not what our goal was, coming in
- 50:06Speaker 25: and working so hard in the offseason summer.
- 50:07Speaker 4: It wasn't just a win-win football game. I told them, yes,
- 50:10Speaker 4: is it sweet? Absolutely.
- 50:12Speaker 25: And go enjoy it tonight for sure. You know, we've
- 50:15Speaker 25: got to come back to work tomorrow. We've got a really,
- 50:16Speaker 25: really good Florida.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Team next week.
- 50:18Speaker 25: And so it wasn't the Super Bowl, and we didn't
- 50:20Speaker 25: make it to be the Super Bowl. I think the
- 50:23Speaker 25: goals and the expectations that Glenn and Keith have set
- 50:26Speaker 25: for this place isn't about winning one football game in September.
- 50:30Speaker 4: And so am I super proud of them? Absolutely.
- 50:33Speaker 25: But, you know, that's three years since we've been here
- 50:35Speaker 25: that we've come home with that trophy.
- 50:37Speaker 4: I mean, that's an expectation here, as it should be.
- 50:39Speaker 25: And so really proud of our guys and our coaches,
- 50:43Speaker 25: really happy for our fans.
- 50:46Speaker 4: I couldn't be happier for Glenn and for Keith.
- 50:48Speaker 25: I'm really grateful for the opportunity they presented to me,
- 50:51Speaker 25: which they didn't have to. And I think it was
- 50:53Speaker 25: a full circle moment for a lot of people that
- 50:56Speaker 25: no player, no person is bigger than anybody else. And
- 50:58Speaker 25: this place has been built the right way with really
- 51:00Speaker 25: good people. And the trajectory is up, and that's where
- 51:03Speaker 25: it's going to continue to go.
- 51:04Speaker 22: Yes, Pete, just from a program standpoint moving forward the
- 51:08Speaker 22: rest of the season, just how good is it now
- 51:10Speaker 22: to kind of have this week and this game in
- 51:12Speaker 22: the rearview mirror?
- 51:13Speaker 25: Well, I think it's great to have another game to
- 51:15Speaker 25: where it's a four-quarter fight. You know, disappointing thing for
- 51:19Speaker 25: me was something that we talked about halftime. I said
- 51:22Speaker 25: it felt like seven days ago we were sitting in
- 51:24Speaker 25: the same locker room and had a decent first half.
- 51:27Speaker 4: And we talked about coming out here in the.
- 51:28Speaker 25: Third quarter and really sticking the dagger in them and
- 51:32Speaker 25: finishing this thing the right way.
- 51:33Speaker 4: And yet we didn't do it again.
- 51:35Speaker 25: And so if you continue to let good football teams
- 51:38Speaker 25: hang around, bad things happen. And so really proud of
- 51:41Speaker 25: the fight in the fourth quarter. Really good job by
- 51:43Speaker 25: the offense at the end. Really good execution of a
- 51:46Speaker 25: plan in place for the two-point situation. that I think
- 51:49Speaker 25: kind of changed the momentum a little bit there. And
- 51:52Speaker 25: then the defense made a stop when they had to.
- 51:54Speaker 25: But you're going to go back and watch the tape.
- 51:56Speaker 25: There are a lot of opportunities for us to end
- 51:59Speaker 25: that game way before that.
- 52:01Speaker 4: And you keep on playing with fire, you're going to
- 52:02Speaker 4: get burned.
- 52:03Speaker 25: And so we've got to continue to learn from these, obviously,
- 52:05Speaker 25: mistakes and correct them so we don't do it again.
- 52:08Speaker 25: But just so happy for our guys, man. They worked
- 52:10Speaker 25: their butt off. I want them to enjoy it tonight.
- 52:13Speaker 25: Really excited for our fans. Created an unbelievable atmosphere. which
- 52:17Speaker 25: is the norm here. It doesn't matter if it's Tulane.
- 52:19Speaker 25: It doesn't matter if it's Kiff and LSU. You're going
- 52:21Speaker 25: to show up. They're going to be loud. Our guys
- 52:24Speaker 25: just are so grateful for that. A lot of false
- 52:27Speaker 25: starts today. Got them behind the chains because of the
- 52:30Speaker 25: crowd noise. So really thankful for the student section and
- 52:33Speaker 25: all the fans and the alumni.
- 52:34Speaker 4: Happy for them.
- 52:37Speaker 17: Pete, Trinidad plays lights out in the first half, maybe
- 52:39Speaker 17: a little bit rocky at times to start the second half.
- 52:41Speaker 13: But how do you just put in the words the
- 52:43Speaker 13: calming and steadying force he has in those biggest moments
- 52:46Speaker 13: to lead you guys.
- 52:46Speaker 4: Down the field to take the lead on that drive
- 52:48Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter?
- 52:49Speaker 25: Yeah, I mean, he's a fierce competitor. I mean, y'all
- 52:51Speaker 25: have known that. Y'all have seen him for a long time.
- 52:53Speaker 25: You know, we talk about competitive greatness, being at your
- 52:56Speaker 25: best when your best is needed. Like, that's him. Our
- 52:59Speaker 25: guys believe in him. You know, he probably wants a
- 53:00Speaker 25: couple throws back. You know, but he made the ones
- 53:03Speaker 25: that he had to. And doesn't get too high, doesn't
- 53:05Speaker 25: get too low. And he's a steady Eddie. So, you know,
- 53:09Speaker 25: I said that this morning on game day, man. Like,
- 53:10Speaker 25: I don't care what level you coach. If you don't
- 53:13Speaker 25: have a quarterback, man.
- 53:14Speaker 4: Good luck. You know, and we got a good one
- 53:16Speaker 4: and he's a good dude. So, just super happy for him.
- 53:20Speaker 14: What came over you to go for two there?
- 53:23Speaker 25: So, you know, the plan always was, you know, in
- 53:27Speaker 25: certain situations it's really hard when you get scored on.
- 53:31Speaker 25: In a situation where you're not supposed to be going
- 53:33Speaker 25: for two, you send a field goal block unit out
- 53:35Speaker 25: there and then you try to catch people with 12
- 53:38Speaker 25: or make them burn a timeout or anything like that.
- 53:40Speaker 25: And then if they jump, well, then it's half the
- 53:42Speaker 25: distance and you got a real decision to make. Are
- 53:44Speaker 25: you going to get closer at some point on that
- 53:46Speaker 25: for a yard and a half?
- 53:47Speaker 4: Well, then we did it again and they did it again.
- 53:49Speaker 25: And so then at that point, you know, if we
- 53:51Speaker 25: can't get a half yard, right, to get it to eight.
- 53:54Speaker 4: To make sure that you don't lose the game. You know,
- 53:56Speaker 4: worst-case scenario, that you're going to overtime, then we shouldn't
- 53:59Speaker 4: win the game.
- 53:59Speaker 25: So it was something that we worked throughout the week
- 54:01Speaker 25: that our guys executed at a high level.
- 54:03Speaker 20: What could you say about the secondary performance tonight?
- 54:07Speaker 25: You know, I thought at times they did a really
- 54:10Speaker 25: nice job. I think Charlie does an unbelievable job on
- 54:13Speaker 25: the other side of the ball and presents a lot
- 54:15Speaker 25: of problems for defenses. So they saw a lot of
- 54:18Speaker 25: different things, and I thought for the most part, They
- 54:20Speaker 25: did a really good job. I put a lot on them.
- 54:23Speaker 25: There's a lot of checks and things like that. It
- 54:25Speaker 25: wasn't always perfect. I knew it wasn't going to be
- 54:27Speaker 25: perfect going in, but they've taken a beating lately, and
- 54:31Speaker 25: they've been really, really coachable.
- 54:32Speaker 4: They made some plays when they have to. It wasn't perfect.
- 54:34Speaker 25: I wasn't perfect either. We'll look at the tape, but
- 54:37Speaker 25: really excited for them tonight to get that win. That's
- 54:39Speaker 25: a big one for us.
- 54:41Speaker 12: Hey, Pete.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Over here.
- 54:42Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 54:44Speaker 26: I know not your Super Bowl, bigger things down the road.
- 54:47Speaker 26: But a lot was made of Lane's reasons for leaving,
- 54:50Speaker 26: and I know you told him specifically, like, hey, you
- 54:52Speaker 26: can have everything you want right here. Do you think
- 54:55Speaker 26: an outcome like this tonight makes a statement along those lines,
- 54:59Speaker 26: reinforces what you already believed?
- 55:01Speaker 25: I'm not getting into that, to be honest with you.
- 55:03Speaker 25: I mean, I think people make decisions for their own
- 55:06Speaker 25: reasons and for them and their family, and that's a
- 55:08Speaker 25: question for him.
- 55:09Speaker 4: I'm not getting into that.
- 55:10Speaker 7: Pete Golding was not going to take that bait. Hey,
- 55:16Speaker 7: I'm all for that. Let your talking be done on
- 55:20Speaker 7: the field.
- 55:21Speaker 1: And he did it. And, you know, moving on, right?
- 55:30Speaker 1: Like I said, I've got to rethink. I've got to
- 55:33Speaker 1: rethink Pete Golding. His stats so far pretty good, but
- 55:38Speaker 1: there's a long way to go. He is an underdog
- 55:41Speaker 1: at Florida this week. I'm frankly stunned by that. Look,
- 55:46Speaker 1: the line is set to get the most amount of
- 55:48Speaker 1: people to bet, okay?
- 55:50Speaker 7: I get that. But, man, that kind of surprised me.
- 55:54Speaker 1: They're looking for the hangover from this game. Is it
- 55:58Speaker 1: Kiwan Lacy's injury? I mean, I know that the Gators
- 56:05Speaker 1: have looked pretty good. They haven't played anybody like– I
- 56:11Speaker 1: guarantee Auburn ain't like Ole Miss.
- 56:13Speaker 7: They're just not.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Oliver Brothers, been part of our community for over 50 years.
- 56:22Speaker 1: They've been in business when Gary and Lawrence Oliver started
- 56:26Speaker 1: in Waco, but they were smart enough to put a
- 56:30Speaker 1: shop right here in Bryant, in the heart of Bryant,
