Transcript
- 0:11Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and non nerds in between.
- 0:13My name is Megan and I am here today with another character
- 0:16breakdown. And of course it's another
- 0:17mutant because I love mutants. And I have to say this episode
- 0:20took forever to do, forever to write, so I really hope you
- 0:26enjoy it. Today we're going to be talking
- 0:27about Iceman. So Bobby Drake first appeared in
- 0:30X-Men number One in July of 1963 and he was created by Stan Lee
- 0:35and Jack Kirby. Bobby Drake's life basically
- 0:38started with two things, being cold and having absolutely no
- 0:41idea how weird his life was about to get.
- 0:43Bobby Drake was born in Floral park, NY to William Drake and
- 0:48Madeline Bass Drake. Bobby grew up with a Jewish mom
- 0:51and an Irish Catholic dad and a mutant gene that made itself
- 0:54known when he realized he could not stop shivering no matter
- 0:57what. Most kids get a growth spurt.
- 1:00Bobby got permanent air conditioning.
- 1:03Things escalated very quickly when a school bully, Rocky,
- 1:06decided it would be fun to attack Bobby and his girlfriend
- 1:08Judy. In a panic, Bobby froze Rocky
- 1:11solid. Judy was safe, but Bobby's
- 1:14secret was officially out. The townspeople responded in the
- 1:17most calm and rational way possible that people always do
- 1:21in comic books. They formed an angry mob.
- 1:25The mob stormed the Drake house, overwhelmed Bobby's family, and
- 1:29things got ugly fast. Fortunately, the sheriff
- 1:31realized the town was 1 bad decision away from becoming a
- 1:34history lesson and took Bobby into custody for protection.
- 1:38News of the incident eventually reached Professor Charles
- 1:41Xavier. Professor X sent Scott Summers,
- 1:45Cyclops, that is Cyclops, to recruit Bobby.
- 1:49Bobby's first response was basically no thank you.
- 1:52This naturally led to a brief super powered fight before the
- 1:55same angry mob caught up with them and nearly hanged them
- 1:58both. Professor X stepped in, wiped
- 2:01the mob's memories and saved the day.
- 2:03Bobby, impressed by Scott and very interested in not getting
- 2:07lynched, enrolled in Xavier's School for the Gifted Youngsters
- 2:10and became the official second X-Men at Xavier's.
- 2:14Bobby trained alongside the OG X-Men, Cyclops, Angel, Beast,
- 2:19and Marvel Girl. As Iceman, he learned to use his
- 2:23powers to protect the world that mostly seemed interested in
- 2:26fearing and hating him. He quickly became best friends
- 2:30with Beast, though he was always a little insecure about being
- 2:33the team's youngest member. His solution was humor.
- 2:36If everyone else was panicking, Bobby was making jokes.
- 2:41Early on, his powers were pretty rough around the edges.
- 2:43Instead of becoming a sleek ice sculpture we constantly see when
- 2:47he's being used in a comic book, he looked more like a walking
- 2:50snowman. Overtime though, he upgraded
- 2:53from festive lawn decoration to Omega level force of nature.
- 2:58The original X-Men fought villains like Magneto in the
- 3:00Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and Bobby even teamed up with the
- 3:03Human Torch to fight a pirate named Captain Barracuda.
- 3:07Because comic books refused to be normal and we appreciate them
- 3:10for that. Years later, everything got
- 3:12weirder when Beast traveled back in time and brought the teenage
- 3:16original X-Men to the future. There, Bobby discovered several
- 3:20upsetting facts. Professor X was dead, Jean Grey
- 3:23had died again, Cyclops had killed Xavier, and the future
- 3:27Bobby was, in his own words, kind of lame.
- 3:32The younger X-Men decided to stay in the future and help fix
- 3:34things. During this time, young Jean
- 3:36Grey, now free of Xavier's psychic blocks and was able to
- 3:39read minds, learned that Bobby was gay.
- 3:42She informed him of this fact in probably the least subtle way
- 3:45imaginable, by straight up telling him.
- 3:48After reading his thoughts, Bobby was understandably furious
- 3:52about the invasion of privacy, but after a lot of awkward
- 3:55conversations and soul searching, he accepted it.
- 3:59Then came the really awkward part, telling his older self.
- 4:02Adult Bobby was initially annoyed that Jean had
- 4:05essentially spoiled a deeply personal realization, but after
- 4:09thinking it through, he admitted she was right.
- 4:11He'd spent years burying that part of himself because he
- 4:14believed coming out would make his already complicated life
- 4:17even harder. As anti mutant tensions rose and
- 4:21the impacts crisis spread, the time displace X-Men split up.
- 4:26Bobby moved to Austin, TX where he somehow became a local
- 4:30attraction by casually building giant ice sculptures in public.
- 4:34Eventually, he rejoined his friends on a mutant road trip
- 4:37across America, helping people wherever they could.
- 4:40Not long after, Bobby's friends Genesis and Oya, decided his
- 4:45love life needed emergency intervention and tried setting
- 4:47him up at a nightclub in Miami. Their efforts went predictably
- 4:52badly. Fortunately, Bobby met Romeo, a
- 4:55young Inhuman who had no trouble flirting with him whatsoever.
- 4:59The two started dating and eventually shared their first
- 5:02kiss during the middle of a mutant Inhuman war, because
- 5:05apparently Bobby only does romance during major
- 5:09International Crisis time travel, then returned to ruin
- 5:12everyone's day. The young X-Men learned that
- 5:15they simply could not go back home, got tangled up in
- 5:17alternate timelines, evil future Brotherhood schemes, collapsing
- 5:22time streams, and attacks by the mutant hunter Ahab.
- 5:26Eventually they returned to their original era.
- 5:29Before leaving, Jean Grey sealed away everyone's memories of the
- 5:32experience so history would not implode.
- 5:35Those memories would only return to their adult selves much
- 5:38later. Meanwhile, adult Bobby's life
- 5:41continued to be 1 long sequence of super villains, failed
- 5:44relationships, identity crises, and discovering that his powers
- 5:48were absurdly stronger than he realized.
- 5:51He dated Zelda, Terry Sue Bottoms, Opal Tanaka and had
- 5:56complicated feelings for Polaris.
- 5:58Very complicated feelings for Polaris.
- 6:01A lot of you know, Polaris is my girl and Bobby was just
- 6:05relentless about how he felt about her, causing fights with
- 6:09havoc whenever he could, just being a whole problem.
- 6:13So he was pretty annoying and hey, basically if you've been
- 6:19online, he is the equivalent of the guy who says everyday, hey,
- 6:23hey, hey, hey, F you, hey, he's that guy.
- 6:29Most of these relationships ended pretty badly, often
- 6:31because being involved with Bobby usually meant getting
- 6:34attacked by robots, gods, monsters, mutants, or all for
- 6:39before dessert. He attended UCLA, earned his CPA
- 6:43accreditation, and somehow became both an accountant and a
- 6:47superhero. For a while, he joined Angel,
- 6:50Black Widow, Ghost Rider, Hercules, and others and a team
- 6:54called the Champions of Los Angeles.
- 6:56They fought giant threats, weird villains, and occasionally each
- 7:00other. As years passed, Bobby kept
- 7:03discovering new layers to his powers.
- 7:06What started as making snow and ice slides eventually evolved
- 7:09into complete control over water molecules, rebuilding his body
- 7:13from vapor, surviving being shattered into pieces, creating
- 7:17armies of ice clones, and casually doing things that would
- 7:21terrify most reality based life forms.
- 7:24A major turning point came when Emma Frost temporarily possessed
- 7:29his body and used his powers far more effectively than he ever
- 7:32had. Her feedback was less
- 7:34constructive criticism and more You've been holding yourself
- 7:38back for years, you absolute walnut.
- 7:41Annoyingly, she was right. Bobby gradually learned that he
- 7:45wasn't just a guy who covered himself nice.
- 7:47He was ice. He could regenerate from steam,
- 7:51survive complete destruction, and manipulate water on a
- 7:55massive scale. Every few years, somebody would
- 7:59discover a new terrifying thing he could do, and Bobby would
- 8:02react with wait, I can do that. His personal life remained
- 8:06complicated. He struggled with coming out to
- 8:08his family and his friends, particularly his parents.
- 8:12Some teammates felt hurt when they found out indirectly.
- 8:15Others were immediately supportive.
- 8:17Bobby eventually came out publicly and became one of
- 8:20Marvel's most prominent LGBTQ plus heroes.
- 8:23Through all of this, he remained Bobby, funny, self deprecating,
- 8:28occasionally immature, and far more powerful than he'd like to
- 8:32admit. During the Cracoon era, he
- 8:35helped establish mutant nationhood, transform Mars into
- 8:38a mutant world of Morocco alongside other mega level
- 8:41mutants, worked with the Marauders, rekindled
- 8:45relationships with both Christian Frost, who is the
- 8:47brother of Emma Frost and Romeo, and tried to figure out what a
- 8:51normal life even looked like. Then came the third Hellfire
- 8:56Gala. Anti mutant extremists attacked
- 8:59Karkowa and Nimrod seemingly killed Bobby by melting him.
- 9:03Unfortunately for Nimrod, killing Iceman is less of a
- 9:06solution and more of a suggestion.
- 9:09Bobby survived, though maintaining a physical form
- 9:12became much harder. Operating from an ice fortress
- 9:15in the Arctic like the world's most emotionally exhausted snow
- 9:19wizard, he continued fighting Orcas and protected Mutant Kind.
- 9:24Eventually, after Mutant Kind's return from exile in the White
- 9:27Hot room, Bobby joined the assault against Orcas alongside
- 9:31the rest of the X-Men. After everything ended with
- 9:35Krakoa, all the chaos, and the mutant nation was a goner, Bobby
- 9:39ended up helping Kitty, Pride and Emma mentor some young
- 9:42mutants who are facing the fact that no matter what they do, the
- 9:46world will not accept them for who they are.
- 9:48Mutants and Bobby can attest to that.
- 9:52After decades of adventures, heartbreak, apocalypses, time
- 9:58travel, disasters, identity struggles and about 1,000,000
- 10:02opportunities to retire somewhere warm, Bobby Drake
- 10:05remained what he had always been, the X Men's resident class
- 10:09clown and OG X-Men, one of the most powerful mutants on earth
- 10:14and living proof that the guy making ice slides and bad jokes
- 10:17might secretly be an Omega level force of nature.
- 10:21So that is Bobby Drake AKA Iceman.
- 10:24I I love his character. I love his powers.
- 10:27I think he's fantastic and I think he is so ridiculously
- 10:33underrated because even now in the comics he is at Grey Malkin
- 10:38Lane, which is like a it's a place that Emma Frost came up
- 10:43with that she made. It's like a psychic world for
- 10:47all the mutants to reside in safely.
- 10:49Even then, he's a side character.
- 10:51When he was helping Kitty and Emma Frost, he was a side
- 10:56character. He's never, he's never really
- 10:59gotten the attention he deserves, unless you want to
- 11:01count Luciano Vecchio's one shot of him that came out a couple
- 11:04months ago month, last month, I think it was called Iceman
- 11:08Omega. And if you are an Iceman fan, I
- 11:10highly suggest checking it out. It is fantastic all the way
- 11:13through. So yeah, that's all I have to
- 11:15say about Bobby Drake today. I hope you enjoyed it.
- 11:18I hope you will like and subscribe.
- 11:20And I hope you have a marvelous day.
