- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: Today we're diving into the bird flu,
- 0:07a virus with far reaching implications on public
- 0:09health, food supply, and
- 0:12pandemic preparedness. We'll discuss its
- 0:15effect upon food prices, vaccines for
- 0:18poultry and humans, and the steps you can take to
- 0:20stay safe. Whether you're just someone wanting
- 0:23to know how to prepare your chicken, whether you have
- 0:26outdoor bird feeders, whether you're a hunter, we'll help
- 0:29you out. Along the way, I'll debunk some myths and explain why
- 0:32evolving science is our greatest tool in addressing these
- 0:35risks.
- 0:39I am your Chief Medical Explanationist, Dr. Terry Simpson,
- 0:42and this is Forku Fork University,
- 0:45where we make sense of the madness, bust a few myths, and teach
- 0:48you a little bit about food and medicine.
- 0:55If this sounds familiar,
- 0:58yes, I am worried.
- 1:01Before I was a surgeon, I was a virologist, and I'm actually
- 1:03published in the field. Never did I think before
- 1:062020 that those roles would intersect. And I
- 1:09hoped after 2020 I would not have to think
- 1:12about pandemics again. In
- 1:15February of 2020, I was asked on KTAR radio
- 1:18in Phoenix if I was afraid of this new virus
- 1:20called COVID 19. And I said I
- 1:23was. I even said that I was so much
- 1:26concerned that I canceled a flight from California to
- 1:28Phoenix to see my mom and dad and instead was
- 1:31driving there. 2020 was
- 1:34awful, and in the hospital were hundreds of
- 1:37patients sick and dying. From COVID
- 1:3919, I would go to the hospital in
- 1:42scrubs, put on lots of protective gear,
- 1:45and before I went home, which were usually long 18
- 1:48hours, days, would strip out of those scrubs at the hospital,
- 1:51shower at the hospital, put on fresh scrubs, go home,
- 1:54shower and change again. Those
- 1:57were the days when the very breath of someone infected
- 2:00could kill you. When the new
- 2:03vaccine arrived in California, I pushed
- 2:05my way into line to get it on December
- 2:0818th. This was a frustrating
- 2:11time. Lots of burnouts from many of us in the
- 2:14medical field. I remember going home after taking
- 2:17care of sick people and seeing how people on Facebook
- 2:19would tell me that I was wrong, that there was no problem,
- 2:23that COVID 19 was just a farce, or that I had a
- 2:25political agenda. It was frustrating.
- 2:28And many nurses, doctors, respiratory
- 2:31therapists, um, and others left the field of medicine because
- 2:34people didn't see what we saw in the hospital.
- 2:38It wasn't just a disease of the old and
- 2:40feeble Bird flu, if it
- 2:43mutates, can be potentially worse.
- 2:46So let's talk about it. Bird flu,
- 2:49also known as a highly pathogenic avian
- 2:52influenza, or the acronym is
- 2:55hpai. That's avian not
- 2:57alien. It affects birds, but can occasionally jump
- 3:00to humans. And while human to human
- 3:03transmission has not been observed, the virus has
- 3:06a high mortality rate of over 50% in
- 3:08confirmed human cases, making it a serious
- 3:11concern. Consider that COVID 19
- 3:14that has killed over 1.3 million people in the United
- 3:16States had a mortality rate of about
- 3:191%. The greatest fear in public
- 3:22health is that bird flu could mix with seasonal flu
- 3:25through a process called reassortment, creating a new
- 3:28strain capable of spreading easily between
- 3:30humans. This is why monitoring preventing outbreaks
- 3:33in birds, poultry, and other animals is
- 3:36crucial. Let me address a common
- 3:38misperception. There is no laboratory
- 3:41currently working on gain of function research for bird
- 3:43flu. Gain of function means that the function would
- 3:46change in the virus to make it more transmissible to human.
- 3:50That is not occurring. Claims like this are conspiracy
- 3:53theories that distract from real medical efforts.
- 3:55Instead, scientists are focusing on surveillance,
- 3:58prevention and developing solutions like
- 4:01antivirals and vaccines. Spreading false
- 4:04claims undermines public trust and distracts
- 4:07from practical advice.
- 4:09Let's start with how you've seen bird flu impact
- 4:11you. It doesn't just affect health, but it
- 4:14disrupts the economy and has already. Egg
- 4:17prices are probably what you have seen most. The
- 4:20culling of, uh, millions of chickens because of infection of
- 4:23bird flu has drastically reduced egg supplies,
- 4:26causing prices to skyrocket. This has
- 4:28also affected dairy prices because of increased
- 4:32food costs for the animals and because of
- 4:35increased risks of milk.
- 4:37So you're probably going to see higher milk and cheese prices in the near
- 4:40future. Additionally, bird flu
- 4:43viruses have been detected, partial
- 4:46viruses in pasteurized milk.
- 4:49This means it's even more dangerous in raw milk that hasn't
- 4:52been pasteurized. Pasteurization,
- 4:54which raises the temperature of milk to, uh, about
- 4:5740 degrees below boiling for 12 seconds.
- 5:00Pasteurization completely
- 5:02eliminates the infectivity of any
- 5:05virus. So please avoid drinking raw,
- 5:08unpasteurized milk and avoid raw
- 5:11and unpasteurized cheese.
- 5:13What about the role of vaccines? You know, they have
- 5:16always played a critical role in managing health risk, but
- 5:19let's clarify their purpose. Vaccines are
- 5:22not about completely preventing illness.
- 5:25They're not a bubble you put around you and you won't get
- 5:27sick. But instead, the aim is to
- 5:30significantly reduce the risk of severe
- 5:33disease, hospitalizations, and death. And they
- 5:36do that well. This is true for seasonal flu
- 5:38vaccine, COVID 19 vaccine, and any potential
- 5:42vaccines for bird flu. Why do we have to keep making
- 5:44new vaccines for COVID 19 and influenza? Because
- 5:47they rapidly mutate. And when they rapidly mutate, we need
- 5:50to bring in the next bird version of the vaccine.
- 5:53Science evolves over time and adapting to new
- 5:56information and challenges. The flexibility of science isn't a
- 5:59flaw, it's a strength. Public health
- 6:02recommendations may change as we learn more about viruses like
- 6:05bird flu, but that's okay. The
- 6:08only dogmas occur in religion and people who have a
- 6:11set point of view that don't want to change with the times.
- 6:14Trust in this process of scientific evolution
- 6:16because it's essential in protecting ourselves and our
- 6:19communities.
- 6:20What about vaccines? Scientists are developing
- 6:23bird flu vaccines for poultry to control the
- 6:26virus in bird populations. We want to reduce the need for
- 6:29culling and the economic impact to the poultry industry.
- 6:31Lower the risk of virus spilling over to humans and other animals.
- 6:35It hasn't been developed yet, but it's in the process. What about
- 6:38vaccines for human While there are
- 6:40H5N1 and that's the designation we use for the
- 6:43bird flu and that has to do with the
- 6:45antibodies and the antigen spikes, they are
- 6:48stockpiled for at risk workers such as poultry farmers and
- 6:51wildlife handlers. However, these vaccines are
- 6:54strain specific and may not protect against new
- 6:56mutations. Just like every year we have a new influenza
- 6:59vaccine, we may need a new H5N1
- 7:02vaccine if it makes the jump to where it can be
- 7:05transmitted from human to human. Those
- 7:07vaccines aren't available to the general public, and they would likely not
- 7:10prevent a pandemic caused by a mutated strain capable of
- 7:13human to human transmission. But this underscores why
- 7:16prevention and monitoring are crucial to stopping bird flu
- 7:19before it becomes a broader threat.
- 7:23What about hunters, backyard bird feeders and pet owners? For
- 7:26hunters, you need to avoid handling
- 7:28sick or dead birds. Use gloves and masks
- 7:31when field dressing game and disinfect your
- 7:34tools afterwards. Cooking wild birds to an
- 7:37internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit
- 7:40or 73.8 degrees centigrade will kill
- 7:43the virus. For backyard Bird Feeders
- 7:45Clean your bird feeders and baths regularly with soap and
- 7:48disinfectant. Avoid contact with bird droppings.
- 7:51Wear gloves during the cleaning and consider wearing
- 7:54an um, N, M95 or K95 mask.
- 7:57Keep your pets away from areas frequented by
- 8:00wild birds. For pet owners know that cats
- 8:03are particularly vulnerable to bird flu,
- 8:06often contacting it by hunting infected birds
- 8:09or contacting bird breeding droppings. The
- 8:11mortality rates among cats is very high,
- 8:14so if you're having an outbreak in your area, your outdoor cat
- 8:17needs to become an indoor cat and monitoring them for
- 8:20symptoms like lethargy or respiratory distress,
- 8:23consulting a vet if needed. There are some
- 8:26general CDC recommendations. Cooking
- 8:29poultry and eggs thoroughly ensuring a temperature of
- 8:31165Fahrenheit or 73.8
- 8:34centigrade. Avoid handling dead birds. Report
- 8:37them to wildlife authorities like your local fish and game.
- 8:40Wash your hands thoroughly after handling birds or
- 8:43poultry products. Stick to pasteurized
- 8:46dairy, avoiding raw milk, raw cheese to avoid minimal
- 8:49exposure to the pathogens. Let's
- 8:51recap Human to human
- 8:54transmission of bird flu hasn't occurred, but
- 8:57the virus has such a high mortality rate the
- 8:59mutation could cause a more serious pandemic than we are
- 9:02currently in with COVID While there are
- 9:05poultry vaccines in development and
- 9:08H5N1 vaccines exist for at risk workers,
- 9:11they will not help if we have a new mutation that
- 9:13causes human to human transmission. Bird
- 9:16flu has raised eggs and dairy prices
- 9:19due to culling and feed disruptions in the
- 9:21economy. Expect this will continue until we
- 9:24develop poultry vaccines. We
- 9:27cannot develop a vaccine
- 9:29against wild birds,
- 9:32so wild birds are still going to be a vector or
- 9:35a transmissible agent for bird flu.
- 9:38Stay safe with hygiene and
- 9:41vaccination and remember, the vaccines are about
- 9:43reducing outcomes, not eliminating illness
- 9:46entirely. Trust the science as it evolves.
- 9:49It's our best defense. It's our best
- 9:51process. And finally, if you want regular updates

- 10:51chiropractor, not some weird eastern thought
- 10:53because because they don't have anything that will help you that much.
- 10:56They've never helped during a pandemic and won't
- 10:59again. I want to thank the distributors of this
- 11:01podcast, Simpler Media and my friend the pod God,
- 11:04Mr. Evo Terra. Until next time, stay
- 11:07safe out there.
- 11:13Hey Evo, I don't know if you've seen egg prices
- 11:16jump where you are, but, man, it's
- 11:19pretty bad here. I'm eating mostly beans for
- 11:21breakfast. I hope you're doing well.
- 11:26>> Speaker B: Yeah, I'm kind of less concerned about the egg
- 11:29prices, which, sure, they're up, but
- 11:32more concerned about
- 11:35another pandemic. Terry,
- 11:37really,
- 11:40I need off this plan.
