0:55
SPEAKER_19: Absolutely, Greg.
0:56
SPEAKER_19: It was nice to hear the voices on the backside, the trainers that we got to interview with the fastest qualifying times, and looking forward to see them come back in the final.
1:05
SPEAKER_19: Yes.
1:06
SPEAKER_03: On this week's episode here on the podcast, we are going to continue our educational series here, uh educating the new owners coming into quarter horse racing.
1:15
SPEAKER_19: Yes, we know for a lot of people getting started, this part can feel a little unknown.
1:20
SPEAKER_19: And talking about the process of breaking a yearling and sending them to the racetrack, we just want to give you a better idea of what the next step really looks like.
1:28
SPEAKER_03: And this is our fourth installment of the series, and we're just kind of walking it down to the natural progression, Bailey, of what it is like to go and become an owner in this sport.
1:40
SPEAKER_03: And if you're taking the route of the two-year-old where you're buying the horse at the sale as a yearling, sending it with the trainer to get it broken, gate broken and all, that's where we're at in this series.
1:51
SPEAKER_03: This episode four, we're focusing on when the horse leaves the sale, goes to the trainer, and goes starts getting broke, as well as starts learning what the starting gate is all about and really putting in that foundation before they really get serious about racing.
2:08
SPEAKER_19: Yes, and this week we're joined by some of the top quarter horse trainers in the country, sharing their experience and what goes on into getting these young horses ready for the racetrack.
2:16
SPEAKER_03: Yes, our featured guest this week is all American Futurity winning trainer Clint Crawford and AQHA World Champion Trainer of 2024, Mark Younger.
2:27
SPEAKER_03: So very much looking forward to their discussion here and working this series and as we keep moving further down the line.
2:35
SPEAKER_19: And Greg, some sad news in the quarter horse industry is losing one of our legends, Hall of Fame jockey and horseman Danny Cardoza.
2:43
SPEAKER_03: Yes, Danny, in the profession of being a reporter, Danny was always so gracious with me, of giving me his time and filling me full of knowledge, as well as he Danny was such a comedian.
2:55
SPEAKER_03: There's no other way to say it.
2:56
SPEAKER_03: He was always so funny and and so witty.
2:59
SPEAKER_03: And we were able to take some time to talk with a few guys in the quarter horse racing world that knew Danny best.
3:06
SPEAKER_03: And we were able to get on the phone with Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert to talk a little bit about.
3:12
SPEAKER_00: Bob Baffert?
3:13
SPEAKER_00: Really?
3:14
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Bob Baffert, you know.
3:17
SPEAKER_03: Is that surprising to you that I have Baffert's number or I didn't know you had that big of connections.
3:22
SPEAKER_03: Oh, well, it's like a weekly discussion.
3:25
SPEAKER_03: Me and him talking about Kentucky Derby stuff and you know, uh all the things that uh all those high dollar yearlings you get, all those things.
3:35
SPEAKER_03: It you know, you yeah I assumed you knew that.
3:38
SPEAKER_19: Really?
3:38
SPEAKER_03: No, not really.
3:39
SPEAKER_03: Not at all.
3:40
SPEAKER_03: This is actually the first time Bob's ever got on the podcast, and I'm able to talk with Bob about his association with Danny all those years ago, Gold Coast Express, all of the above.
3:51
SPEAKER_03: And I was also able to get on the phone with Hall of Fame trainer Russell Harris, Hall of Fame trainer Blaine Wood, Hall of Fame trainer Mike Robbins, Hall of Fame jockeys James Lackey, as well as Hall of Fame jockey G.R.
4:05
SPEAKER_03: Carter.
4:06
SPEAKER_03: And they all talk glowingly about the man that we knew, the legendary jockey and horseman, and the AQHA Hall of Fame rider, Danny Cardozo.
4:16
SPEAKER_19: Greg, I have to say, I'm still a little surprised.
4:19
SPEAKER_03: About what?
4:20
SPEAKER_19: That you actually do have Baffert's number.
4:22
SPEAKER_03: Oh, I see.
4:23
SPEAKER_03: Well, you know who else's number I have?
4:26
SPEAKER_19: I'm almost afraid to ask.
4:29
SPEAKER_03: Sleepy Gilbert.
4:31
SPEAKER_19: Yet another legend.
4:33
SPEAKER_03: Without a doubt.
4:34
SPEAKER_03: And with that being said, let's go to commercial and we'll be right back after these words from our sponsor.
4:40
SPEAKER_05: The next generation of speed is here.
4:42
SPEAKER_05: KVN Corona is making his mark by sending out qualifiers like Forever Midnight to the Remington Park Derby and Kevin's Dime Piece to the Desert Classic Futurity.

6:07
SPEAKER_00: Alright, back to the podcast.
6:09
SPEAKER_03: Alright, we're back here ready to pay tribute to one of the legends in the sport that has recently passed, Danny Cardoza, AQHA Hall of Fame jockey, as well as a tremendous horseman and a very well-respected individual in the sport, uh, as it pertains to my own experience with Danny.
6:26
SPEAKER_03: From the very first time I met him at the Heritage Place sale in Oklahoma City, it was very apparent that Danny was not only a clever, fun-loving guy that was always quick with a comment and a joke, but he saw that I was very enthused about learning as much as I could from some of the legends in the sport, including himself.
6:45
SPEAKER_03: And he was always so gracious to me over the years of when I asked him to do something, such as the Relic Hunter.
6:52
SPEAKER_03: If you go on YouTube and watch the Relic Hunter, I think I have two episodes with Danny Cardozo, as well as Danny participating when I was really trying to get the podcast going earlier here on Stalin Esearch.
7:04
SPEAKER_03: And I was able to get on the phone with some of the folks that knew Danny well as I asked him to pay tribute to this legend.
7:12
SPEAKER_03: Alright, we're on the phone with Hall of Fame trainer Bombafford.
7:16
SPEAKER_03: Bob.
7:17
SPEAKER_03: A lot of of your success in the quarter horse racing world contained the jockey, Danny Cardoza, with him being aboard for some of the largest successes that you've had in your career before you switched over to Thoroughbreds.
7:29
SPEAKER_23: Well, Danny, I've I've known him forever.
7:31
SPEAKER_23: When I was trying to be a jockey myself, I remember spending a lot of time in the hotbox with him, and uh and him and Bobby Adair used to make fun of me because I I was a non-sweater, and they these guys would get in there, it was no problem for them.
7:46
SPEAKER_23: But uh Danny he rode the best quarter horse I ever trained, Gold Coast Express, world champion.
7:53
SPEAKER_23: And if it wasn't for him, he would have never been champion.
7:56
SPEAKER_23: He was a quirky horse, but he got along with him great.
7:59
SPEAKER_23: And uh and and the thing about Danny, there's not very many jockeys like back in the day, those those great jockeys like the Cardozas, Adrian, all the not only were they great athletes and jockeys, but they were great horsemen.
8:14
SPEAKER_23: They knew horses, they knew you know, they knew how to calm a horse down, they knew how to work with a horse, you know.
8:20
SPEAKER_23: But Danny was he was cowboy first, jockey second.
8:25
SPEAKER_03: Bob, talk about his wit and some of the funny things that you've run across with Danny.
8:30
SPEAKER_23: Well Danny, when um he wasn't good on instructions, and so uh when I go tell him about a horse, he'd look at me with this funny look like, What are you what are you telling me?
8:42
SPEAKER_23: You couldn't ride a lick, and you're telling me how to ride this horse.
8:45
SPEAKER_23: I was a sp I I wish I would have never tried to be a jockey, but he was always Danny.
8:51
SPEAKER_23: He was if you tried to tell him about a horse, he would always come back with something like that, like, hey, you know, I'll I'll never forget we were we were behind the gate one time and we were had to qualify some horses when I was right when I was trying to ride, and I was or no, I was training then, and I was I was training, that's what I was doing.
9:09
SPEAKER_23: I was training horses, and I had Danny on a horse, and and I had uh Kip Dieterson another horse, and I was telling him, hey, you know what?
9:16
SPEAKER_23: You need to do this and you need to do that, and then and then Danny looks at me like, What?
9:21
SPEAKER_23: You're telling me you're giving me orders how to ride when you he always threw that at me.
9:26
SPEAKER_23: You couldn't ride a lick, and you're telling me like and then I'd laugh, like, what the hell's wrong with me, you know?
9:31
SPEAKER_23: But uh he was always you he he he'd come back with something.
9:35
SPEAKER_23: I mean, he was very uh he was a funny guy, but he was all business when it came for the big races.
9:41
SPEAKER_23: He had ice water in his veins, you know, and he was famous for his uh what's that whiskey brand, that purple uh Crown Royal.
9:48
SPEAKER_23: Crown Crown Royal, man, that was him.
9:51
SPEAKER_23: He'd show up with that Crown Royal cap every every day.
9:54
SPEAKER_23: And uh he was um he was a great rider.
9:57
SPEAKER_23: He was uh you know, he's legendary, you know, and uh Hall of Fame guy.
10:02
SPEAKER_23: Never never never galped a horse once.
10:05
SPEAKER_23: Kip Dietrichson did all the work for him.
10:08
SPEAKER_23: He and he just showed up and like he said he didn't need to practice, you know.
10:12
SPEAKER_23: So uh uh him and Bobby Adair, man, they were just two great ones, you know.
10:16
SPEAKER_23: We had some great jobs.
10:18
SPEAKER_03: Bob, thanks for joining us here on Quarter Horse Racing Talk.
10:21
SPEAKER_03: On the phone with Hall of Fame jockey GR Carter.
10:24
SPEAKER_03: GR Danny was somebody you looked up to and you've known for years.
10:28
SPEAKER_03: So talk about Danny the writer and Danny the person.
10:32
SPEAKER_08: You know, he's one of those guys just a generation above me that was that was a legend that I that you know, it was like I I remember the first time I ever met him was when I went to Los Alamitas and uh I ended up locking right there beside him, beside the legend Danny Cardoza, and uh gotten a witness the last few years of his of his career, and he was uh he was the best, you know, and just the horses that he rode and the races he won or all the stuff that I inspired and wanted to do and wanted to wanted to accomplish.
11:04
SPEAKER_08: And uh he had already done all of those things before I ever even met him.
11:08
SPEAKER_08: And it and it was it's it's really it's really gratifying that I ended up becoming such great friends with him, you know, like especially through Ranchero Vistador's ride in California.
11:19
SPEAKER_08: Him, John Danny and Andrini are the two that uh that got me uh to be a member out there, and uh we just had so much fun out there.
11:26
SPEAKER_08: Danny, he was quite quite the prankster, I can I can reassure you assure you.
11:31
SPEAKER_03: Yes, one of the great stories that I witness is when uh uh track magazine and heritage place had the little panel where they had the all the great jockeys there, all up there, and GR was mceying it with Ben Hudson and got to Danny, and it's almost like we were holding our breath waiting to what Danny was going to say is because he's always has something clever to say.
11:51
SPEAKER_03: And and GR's father-in-law is who if you don't know is Hall of Fame jockey uh Jerry Burgess.
11:58
SPEAKER_03: And GR is married to his daughter.
12:01
SPEAKER_03: And Danny, when he got to the question of Danny, the first thing he looked at GR and he looked over at Jerry and said, Jerry, do you know he's sleeping with your daughter?
12:10
SPEAKER_03: Just he was always something like that with Danny.
12:14
SPEAKER_08: So no, yeah, I remember it quite well.
12:16
SPEAKER_08: Uh I wouldn't have expected anything less out of him.
12:19
unknown: Yeah.
12:20
SPEAKER_03: All right, on the phone with another Cardoza longtime friend, Russell Harris.
12:25
SPEAKER_03: Russell, talk about Danny Cardoza, the person, please.
12:29
SPEAKER_17: Well, Danny was uh a real special kind of guy.
12:33
SPEAKER_17: I never was around anybody that had more fun than he did doing anything he was doing.
12:40
SPEAKER_17: It didn't make any difference what it was.
12:42
SPEAKER_17: Danny was going to have a good time.
12:44
SPEAKER_17: And everything he did, even including the things he had a good time doing, he was good at it.
12:49
SPEAKER_17: He would roll peak, he could ride racehorses, he could he could just do about anything.
12:56
SPEAKER_17: And uh I remember really well they had a little an almost a big ship, a little Welch horse, they called Mama Mouse, it was a mare, which was unheard of for wanting to ride what he was doing anyway, and he was team roping with all the other jockeys.
13:12
SPEAKER_17: Los Alamitas used to have a rope in arena there at the racetrack, million vessels put in for those riders and trainers to go rope when they wanted to.
13:21
SPEAKER_17: And Danny and Kenny Hart would get together and team up.
13:24
SPEAKER_17: He had that little bitty Mary was riding, and they were almost unbeatable.
13:28
SPEAKER_17: But Danny just he was he was just the life of the party.
13:33
SPEAKER_17: I don't know if many of them are aware, but it saw the whole time his gallop helmet and things that he he wore every morning to get a lot more courses in and all, the color of his gallop helmet and all was made of out of the bags of crane or bags, those velvet bags that they stored whiskey in.
13:52
SPEAKER_17: I mean, Danny just was full of life.
13:54
SPEAKER_17: He was just a lot of fun.
13:55
SPEAKER_17: I never saw him in a bad mood, and uh one of the best race riders I ever saw in my life.
14:02
SPEAKER_03: All right, on the phone with Riadosa Racehorse Hall of Fame jockey, James Lackey.
14:06
SPEAKER_03: James, you had a lot of experience riding with Danny.
14:08
SPEAKER_03: Talk about Danny the person as well as a little bit about Danny the rider.
14:13
SPEAKER_22: Oh, I have all the respect in the world for Danny.
14:16
SPEAKER_22: Uh I think he's probably well, he is one of the greatest or is the greatest good horse rider.
14:22
SPEAKER_22: One of the most fierce competitors I was ever around.
14:27
SPEAKER_22: But uh he was a true horseman.
14:29
SPEAKER_22: Uh we both had success on the track and off the track training.
14:36
SPEAKER_22: Uh Jack Brooks once told me that Danny and I, the reason we were good at training was uh we rode too many horses back to the barn.
14:45
SPEAKER_22: But that's just somebody that understand that.
14:48
SPEAKER_22: But uh Danny made me put my golf clubs away when I for about ten years because he kept taking my money on the golf course.
14:57
SPEAKER_22: Uh Danny was just an overall athlete.
15:00
SPEAKER_22: And uh, you know, he could rope and but he's probably one of the most not just riding, but he's probably one of the most intelligent jockeys I have ever been around.
15:12
SPEAKER_22: Uh true uh spokesman spoke his words, always very witty.
15:18
SPEAKER_22: It's very witty.
15:20
SPEAKER_22: Danny always uh told the story.
15:23
SPEAKER_22: Of course, him and I both let's ride first down dash.
15:27
SPEAKER_22: And uh he said uh Lacky and I both wrote him, but we both got him beat one time.
15:34
SPEAKER_22: He said he ran second and I ran last, but he always had to throw this butt in there.
15:41
SPEAKER_22: He made more money when Danny was riding than when I did.
15:45
SPEAKER_22: So I look forward to the day when we're reunited with first down dash, and maybe I get reunited with cash rate and we'll have the greatest match race in the heavens or ever was.
16:00
SPEAKER_03: On the phone with trainer Blainewood Blaine, of course, Danny Cardoza had a special connection with the Wood family, uh dating back to winning the only all-American of your father back on Pie in the Sky.
16:12
SPEAKER_03: Talk to me about us remembering Danny in this podcast.
16:16
SPEAKER_13: Oh man, what a great guy.
16:17
SPEAKER_13: He helped me so much.
16:19
SPEAKER_13: And uh, of course, obviously he was a great, great rider and a great person.
16:24
SPEAKER_13: You just if you didn't like Danny Cardoza, you didn't like anybody.
16:28
SPEAKER_13: I remember when I really first started training and I went to California when Danny was the first one in my barn, and he would he would gallop my horses for me, and they just didn't make him any better than Danny.
16:38
SPEAKER_13: And of course Dad was a big, big Cardoza fan, and of course Danny was real big and California was, you know, just winning everything, and that's how it got going.
16:48
SPEAKER_13: But I remember the day I took into the gates and Danny told me, says, Are you ready to win this thing?
16:53
SPEAKER_13: And I said, Yes, sir, and hell, I just a kid.
16:56
SPEAKER_13: And he said, Well, we're he said, We're fixing to win this.
16:59
SPEAKER_13: And he said, Be sure and pull your collar up and fix your hair.
17:02
SPEAKER_13: And I always remember that going to gates, and of course, obviously, you know, he did.
17:07
SPEAKER_13: But uh he'll be uh he'll be sorely missed, man.
17:11
SPEAKER_13: He just was just a good he was as good as guy as he was a jockey.
17:15
SPEAKER_03: Alright, on the phone with former trainer Mike Robbins.
17:18
SPEAKER_03: Mike, a lot of success has had been had with Danny Cardozo throughout your career.
17:23
SPEAKER_03: Give us your insight about Danny the man as well as Danny the writer.
17:28
SPEAKER_14: Well, he was probably, as far as I'm concerned, the best uh jockey that I ever that I ever wrote.
17:35
SPEAKER_14: I wrote some really good ones and they were all good guys.
17:38
SPEAKER_14: But he was just smart and uh knew horses and was a really good horseman.
17:43
SPEAKER_14: He wasn't only just a jockey, he was a good horseman and a cowboy.
17:46
SPEAKER_14: And uh he just knew what he was doing.
17:49
SPEAKER_14: I mean he could read a horse and and uh knew when to ask him and when not to.
17:53
SPEAKER_14: Yeah, he and I had a lot of fun together fishing and and we did a lot of stuff together.
17:58
SPEAKER_14: He was uh when we took uh Dash's dream to Riyadosa for the All American Derby, her three-year-old year, it was the only horse I took, and I took uh we had me and Danny, a groom and uh pony horse, and that was all we took, and so we didn't have a whole lot to do with her during the day.
18:14
SPEAKER_14: Every now and then we'd we'd gallop her and get her ready to run.
18:18
SPEAKER_14: But uh we spent a lot of time seeing them out and godfishing together and just uh just messing around having a good time.
18:24
SPEAKER_14: It was a lot of fun.
18:27
SPEAKER_03: I find it very touching and fitting that I include uh just a little bit of the excerpt of the podcast interview that I did with Danny Cardozo some time back here to close out this section as we pay tribute to this legendary figure in quarter horse racing.
18:43
SPEAKER_02: I got involved in racing.
18:44
SPEAKER_02: I was breaking colts for Don first in Tulary when uh he had a training farm there and he was breaking colts for uh Charlie Bird and Clarence Scarborough and a whole whole bunch of people from back there in New Mexico and Texas and stuff.
18:59
SPEAKER_02: He got me started teaching me how to how to be a horseman.
19:03
SPEAKER_02: I was 15 years old when I went to work for Don.
19:05
SPEAKER_02: I was 18 when I went to work when I went to Bay Meadows to ride.
19:09
SPEAKER_02: And I went up there to work for Earl Holmes.
19:12
SPEAKER_02: And at the time you had uh you had riders like Barney Banks, Charlie Smith, Harley Crosby, Pal Crosby, Milton Patio.
19:19
SPEAKER_02: You know, you had some really good riders then that were getting a little older, and I watched I watched them consistently and picked out good points and bad points and tried to tried to perfect my profession.
19:33
SPEAKER_02: For 26 years I did what I loved.
19:35
SPEAKER_02: Nobody loved it as much as I did.
19:38
SPEAKER_02: I thrived on it.
19:40
SPEAKER_02: That's all I wanted to do was ride horses.
19:42
SPEAKER_02: There wasn't anybody having any more fun or as lucky as I was.
19:47
SPEAKER_06: And we'll be right back after these words.

SPEAKER_03: Well, here it is.
21:40
SPEAKER_03: We were able to get on the phone with All American Futurity winning trainer Clint Crawford to discuss with him a little bit about the approach that he takes with some of his owners during the period of time when a horse leaves the sales and goes to get broke, as well as its gatework, laying the foundation, and also managing their expectations.
22:00
SPEAKER_03: It's something that he incorporates in his program, and he's here to discuss it here on Quota Horse Racing Talk Weekly.
22:08
SPEAKER_03: Hey Clint, thanks so much for joining us here on Quota Horse Racing Talk Weekly.
22:12
SPEAKER_03: Hey, Greg, how are you?
22:13
SPEAKER_03: I'm glad to be here.
22:15
SPEAKER_03: Clint, continuing on this series of educating these new owners into the sport, wanting to talk about kind of the braking process.
22:23
SPEAKER_03: Now, we've gone through several of the steps where there's choosing of the horse, there's buying of the horse, there's finally getting the horse over to getting the process of getting him braking and training.
22:35
SPEAKER_03: So kind of talk a little bit about the process and especially speaking to a new owner to kind of give direction of what they're hoping to accomplish of going through these months it's going to take in order to get this horse to the point of where he's breaking out of the gate, he's ready to go to the track and he's ready to get serious about racing.
22:54
unknown: Yeah.
22:55
SPEAKER_11: So when these owners call me and ask me to buy babies for them and stuff like that, we I always let them kind of know, you know, what what they got ahead of them.
23:04
SPEAKER_11: And uh they've got, you know, we got the fraternity payments and uh, you know, we got the training bills, we got uh six months of you know uh I call it boot camp, you know, getting them ready and uh you know for that to to be ready to run in March and April.
23:22
SPEAKER_11: And uh, you know, and so but uh but you know that a lot of the owners come to me uh you know wanting to buy a horse like that.
23:32
SPEAKER_11: You know, I steer them in the direction is if they want to, you know maybe they'll ought to buy an older horse too.
23:38
SPEAKER_11: Not so much a claiming horse or something like that, but something we could have a little fun with.
23:42
SPEAKER_11: And while we're waiting on the babies, you know, to reach uh you know, six months of training and ready to run.
23:50
SPEAKER_11: And so I've done that with several owners in the past, and you know, it's always worked out.
23:55
SPEAKER_11: We don't we don't buy a lot of overnight horses, but just like one or two, you know, and but and I always try to find them something that I know is gonna win.
24:03
SPEAKER_11: And sometimes I come across stakes horses, you know.
24:06
SPEAKER_11: And uh and that always turns out that's how me and the cavern halls uh started out, you know.
24:12
SPEAKER_11: Probably the first horse we bought for him was Watona's LaPon.
24:15
SPEAKER_11: She jumps up and wins the stakes racer first out while we're getting babies ready to run.
24:19
SPEAKER_11: And when it works out like that, you know, it's it's great.
24:22
SPEAKER_11: I just let everybody know exactly what they've got to look forward to, you know.
24:27
SPEAKER_11: Now, once we start gating these horses, and you know, we put three months of galloping and braking, and then we start gating our babies.
24:36
SPEAKER_11: And uh and when we start gating our babies, you know, I'll send them the videos, I'll I'll invite them out to the ranch, you know, and they're more than welcome to come anytime they want to.
24:46
SPEAKER_11: They can come every day if they want.
24:47
SPEAKER_11: You know, we let them see the process, you know.
24:50
SPEAKER_11: But we try our best just to keep them safe and sound for them and keep them updated on how the training's going.
24:58
SPEAKER_11: It works out pretty good.
24:59
SPEAKER_11: I've had, like I said, I've had several owners over the years, and that's kind of the way we went.
25:04
SPEAKER_11: You know, we buy them a couple of fraternity horses, one or two or three, or how many they'd like to buy.
25:10
SPEAKER_11: And but I also also try to buy a horse because I run pretty much year-round.
25:14
SPEAKER_11: And so I try to run, I run in New Mexico and stuff like that, and places like that, and and they run pretty much year-round.
25:21
SPEAKER_11: So we always have a place to go run a horse, and and you know, and that's and that's good to have a good horse like that for them and let them kind of already, you know, get the feel of the racing and and seeing how that that part of it works.
25:35
SPEAKER_03: Clint, with all of the owners that you have have gone through and experienced where it's see, and and definitely focus on uh uh somebody that's fairly new to the industry going through that process of getting a horse from the sale and to actually getting him over back over to say like to Remington Park to putting on some serious works, maybe even going into the training races.
25:57
SPEAKER_03: What would you recommend as a new owner of how to gather the most fun out of the whole process?
26:04
SPEAKER_03: Is it actually being involved and coming and watching the horse gallop?
26:07
SPEAKER_03: It's coming and watching the horse with his first work out of the gates there at the farm.
26:12
SPEAKER_03: Talk about your experience of when you've seen these new owners, the ones that truly are look like they're having fun.
26:20
SPEAKER_03: Uh describe what they did in order to make the most fun for them.
26:24
SPEAKER_11: So so I've got an owner that, you know, recently in the last two years that we've uh got hooked up with, and it's a really great guy.
26:32
SPEAKER_11: His name's Chancy Larson.
26:34
SPEAKER_11: And uh, and so, you know, he came to me and he wanted to get into this in into the racing, and uh and he wanted some babies, but he kind of, you know, he didn't know what he wanted, you know, he but he wanted to get into it.
26:47
SPEAKER_11: And so when he came aboard, you know, the first thing I did was is I had a couple of horses there.
26:53
SPEAKER_11: They were cheap.
26:54
SPEAKER_11: You know, it's not that he was looking to buy a cheap horse, but I, you know, he wanted to try to win some races and just, you know, kind of get into a little bit.
27:02
SPEAKER_11: So I sold him a couple of horses that were mine and Renee's, and uh, but I knew they were gonna win.
27:08
SPEAKER_11: And uh this Chancy is a longtime friend of Renee.
27:11
SPEAKER_11: Uh we sold him these two horses, and they both jump up and win and uh and do good.
27:18
SPEAKER_11: And then he wanted to start last year he wanted to start getting into the two-year-old, you know, buying some yearlings and stuff like that.
27:25
SPEAKER_11: So so we kept older horses to run.
27:28
SPEAKER_11: We bought a couple of two-year-olds and uh and we done pretty good with them, you know.
27:33
SPEAKER_11: Um one horse they had was uh Swifty Swift, and uh and she jumps up and she says the fastest time to the four corners, and then sets the fastest time out there to the I believe it was the Mystery Faturity, you know.
27:47
SPEAKER_11: So they had a little bit of success.
27:49
SPEAKER_11: And then and then this year, you know, we've got like seven yearlings for them or two year olds now for them.
27:55
SPEAKER_11: And uh but plus we also have a few older horses, and uh and those horses are already running and doing well for 'em.
28:02
SPEAKER_11: And and I mean, you want to talk about having a blast.
28:05
SPEAKER_11: This guy has a blast.
28:07
SPEAKER_11: He said, you know, because he kind of got in it the right way.
28:10
SPEAKER_11: Uh, you know, he didn't just dive in there.
28:13
SPEAKER_11: And uh, you know, that's kind of doing it the the the cheaper way, you know, of doing it.
28:18
SPEAKER_11: Now now I I do have owners that uh uh recently think uh that I've got hooked up with and you know and their plan was a little different.
28:28
SPEAKER_11: You know, they want to buy a bunch of horses, uh, and they want to chase the grade ones and stuff like that, which that was Chris and Melody liken's, and you know, they were new to the game.
28:41
SPEAKER_11: Now they partnered with Condi Mays and some of those guys that's been in it forever.
28:46
SPEAKER_11: And now they jumped in there and they bought some really nice horses, really high dollar horses, and uh and and we're going after grade one wins with those horses, but we're also trying to build a brood mare operation.
28:57
SPEAKER_11: We're buying the horse, but we're buying the page to go with it.
29:00
SPEAKER_11: And so so it's kind of a different deal.
29:03
SPEAKER_11: It's a lot of money that you'll spend in uh you know, trying to buy horse and page.
29:08
SPEAKER_11: That's the avenue that that they are taking.
29:10
SPEAKER_11: Uh and they're having some success.
29:12
SPEAKER_11: You know, last year uh Chris was I'd say last year was probably our first big year with uh Chris and them involved on a lot of horses, and uh they're in with Connie Mays and Pat Guthrie, and you know, and and we we qualified in a lot of spots.
29:27
SPEAKER_11: Um we qualified in the All-American uh Oaks the the first year.
29:31
SPEAKER_11: Then last year we bought some breeds and we qualified them in I think every fraturity that they're uh that we ran them in, we we had several of them.
29:41
SPEAKER_11: And so and it's a lot of fun uh you know, for those guys.
29:45
SPEAKER_11: They they enjoy it, they love the horse racing, and uh they love the mares, and you know, Chris and Melody and Renee, you know, they've started this breeding operation out here, and so it's got you know we're in it neck deep, I can tell you that.
30:02
SPEAKER_11: I'm sitting here at the Roswell Ranch right now, and there's a hundred brood mares here, and uh with foals on their sides, and and uh we're trying to get into the breed program for New Mexico.
30:13
SPEAKER_11: So, you know, so Chris had a different plan than than most people.
30:17
SPEAKER_11: You know, he lives here in New Mexico and he wanted to be a uh, you know, a New Mexico breeder and and uh and race New Mexico breads and things like that.
30:27
SPEAKER_11: Do both raise them and and run them, you know.
30:29
SPEAKER_11: So and they're having a lot of fun.
30:31
SPEAKER_11: Like I said, we qualified in a lot of paturities for them and we've done well for them.
30:35
SPEAKER_03: Clint, the last direction I want to take in this conversation with you is not all the great horses have are have these success stories right off the bat where they're just blowing the competition away, not only in the training races, but also in the uh on the actual workouts on the farm.
30:52
SPEAKER_03: I've heard multiple accounts of some of the great horses never won a workout, never won a training race, anything of those things, but once they get in the race in the afternoon, they seem like they were unbeatable.
31:05
SPEAKER_03: How do you kind of temper down the expectations of an owner that's that's brand new at this, has spent a lot of money, taking a lot of time to get to this point, and they're watching a schooling race, and their horse just kind of does an average type race of how do you kind of manage their expectations at that point in time in this whole process?
31:25
SPEAKER_11: So that's where you know you have to let them understand, and you know, beforehand, those are some of the things that we we talk about before we ever even start this deal, you know.
31:34
SPEAKER_11: And so you've got to you have to have patience, okay?
31:39
SPEAKER_11: If you want to be running in in Redos or in All-American and Rainbow and all that stuff, you know, you can't be setting track records in late February or February during the training races, you know.
31:52
SPEAKER_11: Uh some some horses will get by with that, but the majority of them will not.
31:57
SPEAKER_11: You know, it's too hard on them, it's too early, their knees are not closed, they're they're not uh fully developed yet, and uh, and you're asking them to blow down through there.
32:08
SPEAKER_11: And uh so my approach on two-year-olds, and you can see it year after year with me, my approach is I go at it a little slower.
32:17
SPEAKER_11: Now there's a lot of trainers that they're shooting for Oklahoma, Remington Park, and that's that's what they want, or West Texas Faturity.
32:24
SPEAKER_11: And I mean, that's they put all their horses in those races, you know, but there's not very many of them that make it out of there without being sore in the shins or suspensions or you know, something like that.
32:36
SPEAKER_11: I mean, they're just too young to be running that hard.
32:39
SPEAKER_11: And so, like with Chris, you know, Chris knows that we're we're going slowly into this deal, you know.
32:45
SPEAKER_11: So when I when I'm breaking my babies and gate breaking them, my babies are spread out.
32:50
SPEAKER_11: Uh their gateworks are spread out every 14 to 21 days.
32:54
SPEAKER_11: When we start giving them their first hand open, it's usually in uh late November, and uh we'll give them their first little hand open.
33:03
SPEAKER_11: We don't let those horses go very far.
33:06
SPEAKER_11: You know, they go 75 yards, you know.
33:09
SPEAKER_11: And then we'll come back in about 14 days and we'll give them a little kick away from the gate.
33:14
SPEAKER_11: We don't let them go very far.
33:16
SPEAKER_11: We just let them go about 100 yards.
33:18
SPEAKER_11: What we're doing is is we're we're trying to build bone in that baby.
33:23
SPEAKER_11: You're trying to put a three-year-old leg in a two-year-old body.
33:26
SPEAKER_11: And so, and the way you do that is short speed words and time in between to let it remodel, let the bone remodel.
33:34
SPEAKER_11: And so that's how my works are always 14 to 21 days, depending on how hard they work, too.
33:40
SPEAKER_11: If one goes out there and runs off, well, he don't work again for three weeks or better.
33:44
SPEAKER_11: I mean, he just will not.
33:45
SPEAKER_11: Uh, so that's how we kind of get them up in there.
33:48
SPEAKER_11: So when then when we show up in February, I'll have you know, four or five that are dead ready, you know, they could, you know, we could run them in the Oklahoma or something like that, but they were naturals, you know.
33:58
SPEAKER_11: They just bust away from the gates, they're early babies, they're January babies, February.
34:04
SPEAKER_11: And uh those kind of horses is what I aim that's what I you know aim toward, the early furities.
34:11
SPEAKER_11: And uh now my horses that that we bought to run 440, 400, you know, out of the sales.
34:17
SPEAKER_11: We gave a lot of money for them and stuff.
34:19
SPEAKER_11: Uh we're just now starting to to give them their first out.
34:22
SPEAKER_11: We don't push hard early.
34:25
SPEAKER_11: So now you'll see the guys that are shooting for them early faturities, they got a little bit more gateworks in them, they got them a little bit more prepared for the early stuff, but that's hard on a baby.
34:35
SPEAKER_11: And so so my approach is a little bit slower, you know.
34:40
SPEAKER_11: Uh my my babies will have fewer gateworks when we show up for the uh schooling races.
34:46
SPEAKER_11: And uh as I get into March and uh April, then we start doing a little bit more with them.
34:52
SPEAKER_11: And my goal is this time Red Osa Faturity comes around, my horses are all dead ready to run, and I don't have any that are shinbucked.
35:01
SPEAKER_11: So we can have a good summer.
35:03
SPEAKER_11: You know, you shinbuck that baby in February and letting him show off out there, and uh you pretty well got a bad summer coming to you, you know.
35:11
SPEAKER_03: Well, Clint, thanks for coming on here and giving us your approach dealing with this process in the process of educating these new owners of getting these horses from the, I guess, from the farm to the starting gate.
35:25
SPEAKER_03: So I we absolutely appreciate you coming on and sharing your knowledge here on Quarter Horse Racing Talk.
35:29
SPEAKER_10: You bet.
35:30
SPEAKER_10: I was glad to be able to come on here and talk with you a little bit.
35:33
SPEAKER_10: And we'll be right back after these words.
35:37
SPEAKER_03: Talk about a huge weekend of racing in Oklahoma City for a red hot sire.
35:41
SPEAKER_03: That's Uncle D, who had two qualifiers, Demolish and BB to go, qualify into the restricted grade one Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity Finals, as well as qualifying WF Toughest Diamonds into the restricted grade one Remington Park Derby, and also putting the fastest qualifier into the Remington Park juvenile D'Amour.
36:03
SPEAKER_03: Like I said, he's red hot, and he's standing in Roswell, New Mexico at Prestige Equine and making headlines.
36:11
SPEAKER_03: Uncle D.
36:13
SPEAKER_12: When winners break from the gate, they often come from the Rio Doso Sale Company, Bridger, winner of the New Mexican Spring Futurity, and Hendry, winner of the West Texas Juvenile, both graduates of the 2025 sale.
36:25
SPEAKER_12: Find your next champion at the Rio Doso Sale Company.
36:28
SPEAKER_00: All right, back to the podcast.
36:30
SPEAKER_03: All right, we're back here, continuing the educational series here in episode four, and we talk with 2024 AQHA World Champion trainer Mark Youngers.
36:44
SPEAKER_03: All right, on the phone here with Mark Youngers.
36:47
SPEAKER_03: Mark, thanks so very much for joining us here on Quarter Horse Racing Talk.
36:50
SPEAKER_21: Greg, thanks for having me.
36:52
SPEAKER_03: Mark, the direction that we're taking with this episode is once you get these yearlings from the sale and get them over and start breaking and go towards gate breaking and getting the mileage that's needed in order to produce a racehorse before you get serious with this horse, put a lot of speed into him.
37:11
SPEAKER_03: We're looking to kind of educate these new owners of what to expect, some of the pitfalls that have happened in the past, and some of the things that you try to avoid in order to try to achieve success that they're looking for when they go and spend this money at the sales.
37:27
SPEAKER_21: Well, for us, our program's kind of you know systematic.
37:30
SPEAKER_21: We've been doing it the same way and and seems to be working.
37:34
SPEAKER_21: But we look for, you know, at the gate break process, we've also kind of get we've got enough bottom in them, enough gallops in them to where hopefully we've got some bone structure and and gone through some, you know, kind of a little little bit of light speed, short distances, 75 yards or thereabouts, and you know, basically get it to understand what we want them to do, first of all, and that's you know, go straight and fast.
37:59
SPEAKER_21: Um uh as that process goes on, we also try to make sure that we communicate to the to the owner because there's nothing worse than for all this long period of time you spent money buying something and there's nothing no progression.
38:12
SPEAKER_21: So we do a lot of videos and and and communication photos and things of that nature, but kind of the pitfalls can be, you know, shin bucks and uh shin soreness or even worse, getting chips.
38:24
SPEAKER_21: But you know, ideally our our plan is to try to make sure we're we're doing enough to get them fit first and foremost.
38:32
SPEAKER_21: Secondly, we're gonna do light speed training to kind of, you know, we know there's gonna be some bone build-up and whatnot.
38:38
SPEAKER_21: So that's that's kind of our strategy.
38:40
SPEAKER_21: So the pitfall would be, yeah, you could get a shinbuck, and then and and the thing for us, we we continue on.
38:46
SPEAKER_21: I mean, it for us the old old school ways have been to do uh layoffs and turnouts, and we found it it's best if we can slow them down as long as they're not out.
38:55
SPEAKER_21: If they're sound, we train.
38:57
SPEAKER_21: Um and then the upside is you you breeze one and all of a sudden you're like, oh my gosh, I got something that looks pretty, pretty promising, and and that's kind of our deal.
39:05
SPEAKER_21: We we gate break everything at the farm, and we don't have a large facility, but whenever the rider comes back with the the the crazy look in our eye, like, oh my god, they've got a little fear in them, they you know because our track has got a kind of a uh uh little bit of a turn down down by the trees, and and that's kind of our testing blocks, you know.
39:22
SPEAKER_21: If they the writers come back and said, Oh my god, that we can't do it here at the farm anymore, we feel like we've got a pretty good uh prospect.
39:29
SPEAKER_21: And and with that, we try to communicate and share that back to the owners and let them know exactly what we're doing.
39:34
SPEAKER_03: Mark, I wouldn't be wrong to say that most owners are there looking at a catalog, looking at a horse with you, thinking that, God, I I I want a horse that'll go run it the all-American going 440 yards.
39:48
SPEAKER_03: And you know, that's obviously the goal in the sport.
39:51
SPEAKER_03: And if it's not, then it's, you know, there's a lot of questions that need to be answered of, well, what are what are you in it for?
39:56
SPEAKER_03: When you're going through this process, what are some of the indicators that tells you that this horse is going to be one of those early horses that can shoot at 300 yards and and maybe qualify into one of these early futurities versus maybe we should hold off on pushing this horse later towards the summer to get some of those added distance races because this horse is not going to be an early mature.
40:20
SPEAKER_03: What are some of those indicators that uh trainers are looking for to educate these new owners?
40:26
SPEAKER_21: You know, kind of for us early on, it's you know, it's uh it depends on birth date.
40:30
SPEAKER_21: You know, obviously they turn January, they turn, you know, a year older, two years old, you know, whatnot, but but we look at calendar calendar time frame too.
40:39
SPEAKER_21: So if we've got an early baby, then then they're responding and they've got the maturity to do it.
40:44
SPEAKER_21: And usually it's believe it or not, it's kind of the Phillies that seem to be more uh more in tune to the game a little quicker than maybe the Colts or the Gildies.
40:53
SPEAKER_21: But uh, you know, I for me it's it's age and then maybe even pedigree.
40:56
SPEAKER_21: You know, we've got some that uh when we purchased them, we we know based on their confirmation and and bloodline that they are more apt to go the quarter mile or the distance, and and that's kind of what we're looking for.
41:09
SPEAKER_21: Um but you know, for us it's just again, uh communication is key.
41:14
SPEAKER_21: So, you know, you know, it's kind of like when things go south, uh better known now than later.
41:19
SPEAKER_21: And that's kind of what our philosophy has always been.
41:21
SPEAKER_21: You know, there's no sense to sugarcoat it if there's if there's a problem, let's address it early, uh, make whatever corrections need to be done to where we're not wasting more time and more money because there's nothing worse than I think I got it, I think I have it, and then all of a sudden you're you're you're entering and making another payment and and the horse is still sore.
41:38
SPEAKER_21: So, you know, for us it's making sure one horse is sound, and uh but I think the early fraternities, it really depends a lot on uh when we're breaking them, how they're responding.
41:48
SPEAKER_21: Some of them pick it up very quickly, and some of them it's like uh you know they're lost.
41:52
SPEAKER_21: And I've had a lot of them that didn't do much early and come back and did extremely well in the last last quarter of the year, which there's still a lot of money running out.
42:01
SPEAKER_03: So talk about the natural progression that what you're looking for, and or certainly you're hoping for progression, but w and it I know it doesn't always go the way you want it to.
42:12
SPEAKER_03: So what are you hoping and what are you looking for as indicators that this horse can is continuing to improve?
42:19
SPEAKER_21: Well, for us, when we use a schooling race as a testing model, you know, and for us, you always want to win.
42:26
SPEAKER_21: I mean, that's our game.
42:27
SPEAKER_21: We you know, we we're terrible losers, but we want to be able to see a horse that maybe it broke poorly, you know, for whatever reason, uh, but it broke sharp and or it broke and then ran straight and ran down the track.
42:39
SPEAKER_21: Those indicators to me mean they've got a potential and they've got the they've got the wherewithal to do it.
42:45
SPEAKER_21: So um for me it's uh you know, every every time we work them or or or school and race, we're looking for are they improving?
42:55
SPEAKER_21: Are they you know are they doing well in the gates?
42:58
SPEAKER_21: But not all of them do.
42:58
SPEAKER_21: Some of them will do a problem.
43:00
SPEAKER_21: You know, we've had some most recent that you know at the at the farm they did very, very well with one or two horses, but then you go put them in a schooner race or five or six and they have a they just meltdown, you know, and just a lot of maturity.
43:12
SPEAKER_21: So if that's the case, we sometimes back off and do things differently that slow slow their mental capacity because not every horse has the same brain power, just as you or I.
43:24
SPEAKER_21: You know, there's always things that you know that'll set us off, but same thing with the horse.
43:28
SPEAKER_21: So we just try to look at that.
43:30
SPEAKER_03: Mark, somebody that's listening to this podcast is thinking of getting into the sport and thinking of putting their money where their mouth is at these next year link sales that that are coming up.
43:40
SPEAKER_03: Of the example that you can give that of one of your owners that just has a tremendous amount of fun at what they're doing is being an owner there and is absorbing it as much as they possibly can and getting the most satisfaction out of it.
43:54
SPEAKER_03: Obviously, winning is is a huge indicator of of of enjoyment that's.
44:00
SPEAKER_03: Usually the the the answer, but the quick answer, but you know that in a race there's ten horses and there's usually one one winner and then nine of them are giving excuses of why they didn't win.
44:10
SPEAKER_03: So as it pertains to that owner that seems that they were having just the great greatest of times, give some of those characteristics of this is how to enjoy it at the highest level.
44:20
SPEAKER_21: Patience.
44:38
SPEAKER_21: If you if you buy one horse and you got one shot, and it's it's a you know, it's a it's a trying sport, and and there's nothing worse than sitting there without something to run.
44:47
SPEAKER_21: So we we've had a lot of success.
44:49
SPEAKER_21: We're putting together groups and partnerships where you know you own a small or large, whatever fraction of that horse you want to own, it's up to you, you know, that individual.
44:57
SPEAKER_21: But I think by doing things of that nature, it allows you to be have more chances.
45:02
SPEAKER_21: And I think there's nothing better than you know picking out something and watching it mature from the yearling state to two years, and maybe sometimes the two-year-old, they may not be that successful.
45:13
SPEAKER_21: And here they come back to the three-year-old and dominate, and we've had that as well.
45:17
SPEAKER_21: So a lot of it's you know, I've tried to communicate with the owners, the patients that are involved.
45:22
SPEAKER_21: There's going to be monies and expenses that occur that, you know, oh my gosh, I didn't think about you know why you know this happened or that happened.
45:29
SPEAKER_21: But good takeaway, you know, we've we've been blessed and had some uh winners, but we've also had some that you know kind of would call the middle of the road.
45:39
SPEAKER_21: But that middle of the road, because of the dynamic of the sport, maybe it was a particular horses of Philly, she had such a had a residual value later on that we sold her as a prudence.
45:54
SPEAKER_21: What is the real plan?
45:55
SPEAKER_21: And because they're all gonna be successful, you know, you're gonna lose 80% of the time, you know.
45:59
SPEAKER_21: And so if uh if that's gonna give you heartburn, then you know, we we need to sit down and have a talk.
46:05
SPEAKER_21: But that's kind of the game, you know, we look at, you know, yeah, we want to win, and we always want to see the horse improve, and and ultimately we want to, you know, win at a high level, you know.
46:16
SPEAKER_03: Mark, thanks for taking the time here on educating us as well as maybe some of those new owners thinking about getting into the game, and and maybe some of the things that we've explained here and discussed will help them along the way of getting into this great sport.
46:31
SPEAKER_03: So thanks so very much for giving us your knowledge and we appreciate it.
46:35
SPEAKER_21: Well, hopefully it's beneficial to someone, Greg.
46:37

47:08
SPEAKER_05: Keep in track daily temperatures with a slap of a Bluetooth scanner.
47:11
SPEAKER_05: If you're a horseman, isn't it time to stop letting technology be your biggest enemy?
47:15
SPEAKER_05: As Lipchip is built by horsemen for horsemen, we know how you ride.
47:20
SPEAKER_05: Go to Hooflink.com for all the information you need to get going with making life at the barn a little easier.

SPEAKER_18: Good beginning there for Tempting Lou.
47:54
SPEAKER_18: Oh, getting out badly! Oh, I think it was the six-horse GBH cowboy.
47:59
SPEAKER_18: Might be some interference there involved.

SPEAKER_03: On the phone with trainer Sammy Mendoza.
50:03
SPEAKER_03: Sammy, thanks for calling in and tell us about this big stakes win in the Mystery Jet Moor.
50:08
SPEAKER_24: You know what?
50:10
SPEAKER_24: We really thought he was gonna be you big in the mighty deck.
50:13
SPEAKER_24: He had a false uh break at the gates and he tripped the officer's tooth.
50:19
SPEAKER_24: So we expected a lot out of him after he almost caught up to Cardiac Cowboy.
50:23
SPEAKER_24: And once we figured out that that horse went in the gates and he stood like he was supposed to and left there, I knew it was game over.
50:32
SPEAKER_03: What's next?
50:33
SPEAKER_24: We're probably planning on going to Leo Stakes and then hopefully get invited to the Remington Park Championship and we'll go from there.
50:42
SPEAKER_03: Congratulations on the big greatest stakes win, Sammy, and we look forward to seeing this horse progress throughout the uh the spring here.
50:49
SPEAKER_24: Thank you, Greg.

51:02
SPEAKER_03: Give us a snapshot of what it was like to be there at Remington Park.
51:06
SPEAKER_19: Well, the Faturity Trials, it was a great night on Thursday night, and Friday night was kind of an upset.
51:11
SPEAKER_19: The rain came in and it kind of changed the entire qualifier list.
51:16
SPEAKER_19: But some really great racing at Remington Park.
51:18
SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna look at the fastest qualifier coming from the first night there at Remington Park for the Remington Park Futurity.
51:25
SPEAKER_01: They're off.
51:26
SPEAKER_01: Good start, middle of the gate, coming away sharply.
51:28
SPEAKER_01: That's a political gold digger at the rail kisses and candy right there.
51:31
SPEAKER_01: Outside trying to come on, Ramble Calgary, one, two, three.
51:34
SPEAKER_01: And here's Heritage of Power with a big move.
51:36
SPEAKER_01: Heritage of Power, the gray, puts a nose on the lead, but badly back, apolitical gold digger.
51:40
SPEAKER_01: These two, apolitical gold digger on top, buy an eck at the end.

52:01
SPEAKER_03: A super well-bred cult here, Bailey.
52:03
SPEAKER_03: Ashley's Gold Digger, a graded stakes performer, and of course a political jest, one of the top sires in the country.
52:10
SPEAKER_03: And we were able to get on the phone with Juan Polito to talk about going down the racetrack to qualify as the fastest from the first night.
52:19
SPEAKER_03: Hey Juan, take me from gate to wire with this horse in the trial race.
52:29
SPEAKER_09: After the first 30 yards, I kind of see the gray pass me, you know.
52:33
SPEAKER_09: They tried to pass me, and then the horse had to like beat hard.
52:36
SPEAKER_09: He fights and came back, and you know, she called it the deck on them.
52:40
SPEAKER_03: Well, congratulations and good luck in the finals, Juan.
52:44
SPEAKER_03: And Bailey, this horse is super well bred.
52:46
SPEAKER_03: A political jest on the top side.
52:48
SPEAKER_03: Ashley's gold digger on the bottom side of the pedigree.
52:51
SPEAKER_03: Ashley's gold digger, of course, one of the superior running mayors back in her day.
52:56
SPEAKER_03: Stopping the clock is the fastest from the first night.
52:59

SPEAKER_03: And here's Del Day.
53:08
SPEAKER_01: They're off on the final Friday trial.
53:09
SPEAKER_01: What do you think of me now?
53:10
SPEAKER_01: Came away sharply, demolished right there from the middle of the gate.
53:12
SPEAKER_01: Why so political a player as well?
53:14
SPEAKER_01: Up the rail coming on.
53:15
SPEAKER_01: R1 famous inning, farther out.
53:16
SPEAKER_01: Hercules moving up as well.
53:19
SPEAKER_01: Over halfway home, nose to nose in the middle, demolished.
53:21
SPEAKER_01: What do you think of me now?
53:22
SPEAKER_01: What do you think of me now against the edge late?
53:24
SPEAKER_01: What do you think of me now?
53:25
SPEAKER_01: On top.
53:26
SPEAKER_19: What do you think of me now as a two-year-old cult by Cyber Monday out of the Desario mare?
53:31
SPEAKER_19: PJ Chicken Black, owned by Horton Racing, bred by South Fork Equine, and LS Racing, trained by John Steinbo and ridden by Francisco Calderon.
53:40
SPEAKER_19: Stopping the clock at 16.653.

53:46
SPEAKER_03: PJ Chicken Black, a grade one winner back in her day, was also trained by John Steinboe.
53:52
SPEAKER_03: Now Steinbo is making headlines with some of her offspring going into these big grade one events, and we were able to get on the phone and talk with John about this talented cult.
54:04
SPEAKER_03: All right, on the phone with trainer John Steinboh.
54:07
SPEAKER_03: John had the fastest qualifier coming out of the trials, going into the restricted grade one Remington Park Futurity.
54:13
SPEAKER_03: John, talk about this horse getting down the racetrack there in Oklahoma City.
54:17
SPEAKER_16: Well, Bob's been a good one since day one.
54:20
SPEAKER_16: That's what his barn name.
54:22
SPEAKER_16: He came with that when I bought him at the Harry's uh from Diddy and Susan.
54:26
SPEAKER_16: And uh so we just call him Bob.
54:28
SPEAKER_16: He's just been uh a really nice horse, full with and train with, train him in the school and races.
54:35
SPEAKER_16: And uh he won his school race was just absolutely useful.
54:40
SPEAKER_16: Still being those horses pretty easy.
54:42
SPEAKER_16: And uh when he had schooling races, you hate to do that, you know, so we learn him to run and make money with, you know, we want to study that's for sure.
54:54
SPEAKER_16: So that seems a helping for getting a little more focused, and I still think there's a lot of room for improvements, you know.
55:02
SPEAKER_16: You get a lot of criticism, but a lot of people say well, he just called a big tail win.
55:07
SPEAKER_16: Well, so do four of the ones in there with so we're just that qualified that night.
55:12
SPEAKER_16: So we'll just line them up, see how it goes.
55:15
SPEAKER_16: Bob improves he's gonna be one to get dealt with.
55:19
SPEAKER_03: All right, now it's time to switch gears, looking at the three-year-olds going forth in the trials for the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby, a restricted grade one event, 400 yards, and another recurring headline maker, Bailey, in the news here as the fastest qualifier as we hear the call from Del Day.
55:36
SPEAKER_01: They're off in the Saturday open at Remington Park.
55:38
SPEAKER_01: First Remington Park Derby trial underway.

SPEAKER_01: WF Tough as Diamonds running a big one, is right there, nose to nose with JC Speeding, who gets the edge up the rail.
55:50
SPEAKER_01: Here comes Jay's FTD motoring inside.
55:53
SPEAKER_01: It's JC Speeding to the outside, Jay's FTD inside, these two on the line together.

56:13
SPEAKER_03: And Bailey, this horse did great in its two-year-old campaign as a dual registered paint as well as a quarter horse, finishing second in the All-American Juvenile and also finishing third in the Texas Classic Maturity, a grade one event.
56:26
SPEAKER_03: As a two-year-old, we were able to get on the phone with trainer D Keener to talk to him about this talented runner who's the fastest qualifier going into the derby.
56:36
SPEAKER_03: D, this horse, JC Speeding, just keeps motoring along.
56:40
SPEAKER_03: Seems like he's improving from his two-year-old campaign, which was stellar to say the least.
56:45
SPEAKER_03: But talk to me about the progression of this three-year-old going into the Derby finals.
56:49
SPEAKER_15: Mr.
56:50
SPEAKER_15: Duggins, he he had him in uh the Oklahoma, and we decided not to run him in Oklahoma because I uh I wanted him I didn't really want to overrun him at Remington.
57:00
SPEAKER_15: He's in the Remington park.
57:01
SPEAKER_15: I mean he's running the trials there and the uh heritage.
57:05
SPEAKER_15: Uh the horse is really doing good.
57:07
SPEAKER_15: He's kind of matured, and uh hopefully the maturity will, you know, he'll he'll break a little quicker out of the gate and stuff.
57:15
SPEAKER_15: You know, last year he that was his problem.
57:17
SPEAKER_15: I mean, he didn't really just fire away from there, but I think this year might be different.
57:23
SPEAKER_03: All right, now it's time to look at the three-year-old Phillies who took part in the Remington Park, Oklahoma Red Oaks, a restricted grade three event, 350 yards there in Oklahoma City, and let's look at the fastest qualifier called by Del Day.
57:37

57:43
SPEAKER_01: Amaryllis between them, also right there.
57:45
SPEAKER_01: Fisher's tricky charm flying outside.
57:47
SPEAKER_01: Beltane getting a hold of the track now and going for it.
57:50
SPEAKER_01: It's Beltane on top now by a little more length and drawing away in the final hundred.
57:54
SPEAKER_01: Beltane impresses in the first Oaks trial by more than two.
57:57
SPEAKER_19: Beltane is a three-year-old Philly by Cyber Monday out of the Tack It Like a Man Mare, Symbol of Faith, owned and bred by Kelly Yother Equine, trained by D.
58:05
SPEAKER_19: Keener and ridden by Roman Cruz, and was a Redoso yearling sale RNA of$25,000.
58:11
SPEAKER_03: And I was able to get trainer D Keener back on the phone to talk to him about this talented three-year-old Philly.
58:19
SPEAKER_03: Dee, talk to me about the Oaks qualifier, taking from the gate to the wire, and and tell me what you saw from that effort there.
58:26
SPEAKER_15: She uh loaded up good, stood good, and left.
58:29
SPEAKER_15: I mean, left like a rocket.
58:31
SPEAKER_15: I mean, I uh kind of surprised me.
58:33
SPEAKER_15: I knew she had an her last year.
58:36
SPEAKER_15: She ran the fastest training race on one of the days, and uh then she won two trials with three different fraturities there, and then uh I I knew this Philly was pretty talented.
58:49
SPEAKER_19: And we'll be right back after these words from our sponsor.
58:52
SPEAKER_03: Putting up the headlines in the restricted Grade 1 Remington Park, Oklahoma Bred Derby was JC Speeding, the fastest qualifier, who was sired by Chilitos, who stands at Dun Ranch in Winniwood, Oklahoma.
