- 0:00Three oil tankers, two navies, and suddenly the
- 0:03price of crude is headed toward $100 a barrel.
- 0:06This is Ground Signal. According to the Associated
- 0:10Press, U .S. forces struck three Iranian oil
- 0:13tankers on Friday after Navy warships were targeted
- 0:16with missiles in the Persian Gulf. The exchange
- 0:18marks one of the most direct confrontations between
- 0:21American and Iranian forces in the Strait of
- 0:23Hormuz since the conflict escalated months ago.
- 0:26The U .S. Maritime Administration says Iran has
- 0:29been conducting or threatening strikes on commercial
- 0:31vessels across the Persian Gulf, the Strait of
- 0:33Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman. And that advisory
- 0:36remains active through September 9. Two Saudi
- 0:40oil tankers were struck while transiting the
- 0:42strait earlier this week, according to Reuters.
- 0:45Brent crude settled around six a barrel Friday,
- 0:48up roughly 6 % for the week. When one of the
- 0:51world's busiest shipping choke points is under
- 0:52fire, the energy markets move fast. Oil at six
- 0:56isn't just a number. It's a pressure point rippling
- 0:59through currencies, inflation forecasts, and
- 1:01central bank decisions globally. Now, to a rare
- 1:05piece of potentially better news coming out of
- 1:08Europe. AP reports that Ukrainian President Zelensky
- 1:11and Russian President Putin have both agreed
- 1:12to pause strikes on each other's capitals, while
- 1:15U .S. Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are
- 1:17traveling to Moscow and Kiev for talks. According
- 1:20to multiple sources, Ukrainian forces were ordered
- 1:23to observe a temporary ceasefire from September
- 1:255 through September 8 while negotiations proceed.
- 1:29This doesn't end the war, but a pause in strikes
- 1:32on Kiev and Moscow, even a brief one, is more
- 1:35than we've had in a long time. The Witkow -Kushner
- 1:38diplomatic mission is the clearest American engagement
- 1:41with this conflict in months. Whether these talks
- 1:43lead anywhere real is the question to track over
- 1:46the next week. From South America, a grim headline
- 1:50out of Colombia. According to the AP, suspected
- 1:53guerrillas carried out a drone attack in northeastern
- 1:55Colombia on Friday that killed at least three
- 1:58soldiers. The attack involved explosives dropped
- 2:01from drones, followed by a direct clash inside
- 2:03a military compound. Drone warfare has been a
- 2:07growing challenge across Colombia's conflict
- 2:09zones, where armed groups have adopted consumer
- 2:11-grade and modified drones as weapons against
- 2:14military targets. This attack is a reminder that
- 2:18even as some peace negotiations continue with
- 2:20certain factions, others remain fully active.
- 2:24Meanwhile, in the regional economy, Latin America's
- 2:272026 growth outlook has been trimmed to 2 .2%,
- 2:30according to McKinsey. The Philippine peso hit
- 2:33a record low of 62 .71 to the dollar this week,
- 2:36driven by rising oil prices, Middle East tensions,
- 2:39and a strong U .S. dollar. That pressure is being
- 2:42felt across Southeast Asian currencies as well.
- 2:45On the market side, BTC is holding just under
- 2:48$9 ,900 this morning, Ethereum around $460, both
- 2:52tracking roughly flat after the volatility of
- 2:54the past week. Oil -driven inflation concerns
- 2:57are keeping risk appetite cautious heading into
- 2:59next week. The big event to watch, the Federal
- 3:03Reserve's FOMC meeting on September 15 and 16.
- 3:06The Fed has been holding rates in the 3 .5 to
- 3:093 .75 percent range, and markets are split on
- 3:12whether the oil spike gives them reason to hold
- 3:14longer or whether weakening growth signals tip
- 3:16the balance toward a cut. That decision now lands
- 3:20in the middle of a genuine geopolitical energy
- 3:22shock. For currency watchers, the Philippine
- 3:25peso hit a record low this week at 62 .71 per
- 3:28dollar, per the Philippine news agency, driven
- 3:31by the oil price spike and Middle East uncertainty.
- 3:34The USD slash PEN, the Peruvian Sol, is holding
- 3:38at approximately 3 .36. USD slash IDR around
- 3:4217 ,680. USD slash THB near 33 .1. Southeast
- 3:48Asian currencies broadly are feeling the pressure
- 3:51of higher oil import costs and dollar strength.
- 3:55DV, 2026 diversity visa deadline, September 30
- 3:59is less than four weeks away. If you have a pending
- 4:02DV lottery case, That clock is very real. Two
- 4:06AI headlines worth your attention this morning.
- 4:09First, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT can now
- 4:13connect to electronic health records. The rollout
- 4:16includes integration with Epic, the dominant
- 4:18hospital software system in the U .S., and a
- 4:21healthcare public data plugin for clinicians.
- 4:24According to OpenAI, the goal is to help physicians
- 4:27access and synthesize patient records more efficiently.
- 4:31Healthcare AI is moving fast, and this is one
- 4:34of the clearest real -world deployment signals
- 4:36so far. Google DeepMind launched WeatherNext
- 4:393 on September 3, describing it as its most advanced
- 4:42global weather AI model. According to Google,
- 4:46it's integrated across Search, Gemini, Maps,
- 4:49and Google Cloud. Weather forecasting is one
- 4:52of the areas where AI has shown genuinely impressive
- 4:54results. A model at this scale, baked into Google's
- 4:58core consumer products, has real implications
- 5:01for how people access weather information globally.
- 5:04Also worth flagging for next week. Apple has
- 5:06confirmed an event for Wednesday, September 9,
- 5:09starting at 10 a .m. Pacific. The focus is expected
- 5:11to be the new iPhone lineup. More on that as
- 5:14it happens. Let's talk Monza. Pierre Gasly took
- 5:18pole position for the Italian Grand Prix, a massive
- 5:21result for Alpine on one of the fastest tracks
- 5:23on the calendar. According to Formula One's official
- 5:25results, George Russell qualified second and
- 5:28Oscar Piastri third. The top 10 also included
- 5:31Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen,
- 5:34Kimi Antonelli, Franco Colapinto, Lando Norris,
- 5:37and Arvid Lindblad. Gasly on pole at Monza is
- 5:40genuinely exciting. The Temple of Speed rewards
- 5:43low drag setups and slipstream racing, so Sunday's
- 5:46race should be chaotic. Race day is tomorrow.
- 5:48Worth watching. At the U .S. Open in Flushing,
- 5:51Round 3 wrapped up Friday with a series of strong
- 5:53performances. According to the U .S. Open's official
- 5:56coverage, Carlos Alcaraz moved through with a
- 5:58dominant 6 -3, 6 -4, 6 -1 win over Wu Yibing.
- 6:03Irina Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, and Daniel Medvedev
- 6:06all advanced. Emma Navarro beat Carolina Muchova
- 6:106 -3, 7 -5, and Taylor Townsend pulled off an
- 6:14upset over 15th seed Diana Schnader. The tournament
- 6:17runs through September 13. Over at the FIBA Women's
- 6:21Basketball World Championship in Berlin, Japan
- 6:23upset Mali 102 -97 in one of the early surprises
- 6:27of the tournament. Australia beat Puerto Rico

- 6:35through September 7. Today's card at Palco Mundo

- 6:40and Nova Twins. According to Globo, Sepultura,
- 6:44Machine Gun Kelly, Bring Me the Horizon, and
- 6:46Avenged Sevenfold are also on today's bill. That's
- 6:49a full day of rock in one of the most iconic
- 6:51festival settings in the world. The biggest hip
- 6:54-hop release of the week landed on September
- 6:564. French Montana and Max B dropped Night to
- 6:59Remember, a long -awaited collab on Coke Boy's
- 7:02records. The lead single is called Cheat Code,
- 7:05also known as Follow Me, and the full project
- 7:07is now streaming. French Montana and Max B go
- 7:11back decades in New York rap history, so this
- 7:13reunion carries weight for people who've been
- 7:15paying attention to that lineage. The other release
- 7:18to flag, British rapper Nemzees dropped his album
- 7:21Locked In on September 4. Nemzees has been one
- 7:24of the more interesting UK drill voices to watch
- 7:27this year, and this project is his clearest statement
- 7:30yet. On the touring and live front, this week
- 7:33is shaping up to be a major moment in global
- 7:35culture. Rock in Rio in Rio de Janeiro runs through
- 7:39Sunday. U .S. Open tennis continues at Flushing
- 7:41Meadows through September 13. F1 Monza race day
- 7:45is tomorrow. And the Copa Libertadores quarterfinal

- 7:51more days. That's your Saturday briefing. The
- 7:53Hormuz situation is the one to stay close to.
- 7:56Oil at six and rising has consequences that don't
- 7:59stay contained to energy markets. The Ukraine
- 8:01ceasefire talks are fragile but real. And Monza
- 8:05tomorrow could be one of the best races of the
- 8:07season. Stay tuned.
