- 2:35bookal a four to three grumble and it's another Saturday night, So I know
- 2:39y'all know what time it is. Y'all heard Macareless whispers, So you know
- 2:45it's time for me to introduce you guys to another author. So me and
- 2:51her were chatting before you guys came along, and she got a new book
- 2:57coming out. I supposed to be coming out in November and y'all, let
- 3:02me tell you something. If you are a fan of Kimberly Robly, and
- 3:08if you are a fan of Victoria Christopher Murray, you need to go ahead
- 3:14and get your pencil in your paper so you can write down this author and
- 3:17all of her titles. Okay, tonight, you guys, we're gonna be
- 3:22talking to doctor Velma Bagbee. Okay, she has this book out called The
- 3:28Wrong Catch. Now we all have been there before, so she's gonna tell
- 3:34us about her characters and how they got it going on. Okay, welcome
- 3:39Velma Bagbe. Hey, sweetie, come on up. Thank you for having
- 3:46me, Patrees, thank you for being here. So tonight, everyone,
- 3:52we are talking contemporary Christian fiction, and the title of the book is called
- 3:59The Wrong Catch. But before we go through all of that, how about
- 4:04you tell us a little bit about yourself. Hey, everybody, I'm to
- 4:10this magnificent host, Patrice, thank you for having me. I am doctor
- 4:14Veilma Bagbee. I am an Arthur Award winning author, best selling Arthur as
- 4:19well as a dating relationship coach. I'm an our day minister, a pastor's
- 4:26wife, and I also own my own PUBLISHINGLC Publishing company. So I'm excited
- 4:32to be here. I began writing at the age of sixty two, so
- 4:38I'm now sixty nine, so only seven years and I'm working on book seventeen
- 4:42shortly, So I'm excited to be here with you all. You look good,
- 4:46girl, O good. You got a lot of hats, yes,
- 4:53ma'am. How do you keep it all to kill the well? Thankfully?
- 4:59Right now, I'm not doing a lot of traveling, a lot of podcasting
- 5:02and meeting people like you online, so that helps. Well, you know
- 5:09this book now, like I told you so, y'all, I'm gonna tease.
- 5:15I got a copy of another one, y'all, I got it.
- 5:17But I'm gonna tell you how y'all gonna get it. I'm not gonna be
- 5:20steady now you contemporary Christian fiction? Mm hm, tell us a little bit
- 5:32about that, okay, Well, based on my introduction, I'm an our
- 5:39day minister. I also have my doctorate in theology, so we are trained
- 5:46and prepared to expound upon the scripture. Not your opinion, just explain it.
- 5:50So when I decided that after thirty years of counseling and meeting with young
- 5:56women and older women who were looking for their maids. After thirty years and
- 6:00having conversations, I just wanted to begin to address some of the things that
- 6:04I saw and heard, and I did not want to take the approach of
- 6:09a nonfiction book. So I was questioning whether or not I should switch from
- 6:14nonfiction and go into fiction. And that's when I was reminded about the over
- 6:18fifty parables that Jesus spoke. They are all fictional parables, their fictional stories,
- 6:25and so I said, that's what I wanted to do. I wanted
- 6:29to present stories to allow people to see themselves in it, not hit them
- 6:33all over the head with the scripture. So take the same approach Jesus did.
- 6:38He presented the story. He showed them a way of escape or the
- 6:41way out, a redemption plan, whatever was needed, and then he left
- 6:45it up to the individual. He didn't stay there and asked them, okay,
- 6:47now make a decision. Now. He didn't do that, and I
- 6:50was shocked at the response from the readers when they read it and said,
- 6:56oh, we need more of these. Because I met the catfish. I
- 6:59met this fish. I remember meeting this guy, and so that's how it
- 7:02started. So now it's a series and I'm here for it. I am
- 7:08still here for it. So why did you want to become an author?
- 7:14Like, where'd the author come in with everything? Patrice? That was not
- 7:18my clan, But you know my I retired after working thirty eight years as
- 7:25a deputy administrator in California in twenty twelve. I did a lot of writing.
- 7:30I developed workbooks and training and developed programs and all of that stuff.
- 7:36When I retired, that was going to be it for me. But here
- 7:40comes my daughters having conversations around their challenges with men and what things they thought
- 7:46I should they should look at, and what did the scripture say about the
- 7:51process all of that, And we had this conversation and from there they began
- 7:57telling their friends. Friends began telling friends, and they kept coming back.
- 8:01Look, Mom, they want to know more. We either need to put
- 8:03everything we talked about in the book, or you need to do something.
- 8:07So my very first book was published based on the conversations we had, so
- 8:13it was nonfiction, but it grew from there when I realized I wasn't supposed
- 8:18to stop. I needed to keep talking about this same topic and writing about
- 8:22it. Well, I know, I appreciate you doing a fiction book.
- 8:28They laugh at me at work because when it comes to the fiction section,
- 8:33hang out over there, and no, no, you bring me over here
- 8:37to the fiction section. I don't want to think too hard. I don't
- 8:39want to have some fun. But yeah, all times, when you get
- 8:43that book and you're having fun reading it, you're getting so many nuggets from
- 8:48it. So from all the fiction readers out there, we personally thank you.
- 8:56Challenge, can you describe your book the Wrong Catch that's going to be
- 9:01coming out soon in ten words or less? The new one that's due to
- 9:11release next month, let's see eye opening? Oh. Men were surveyed for
- 9:20content ooh, characters designed around their challenges that they expressed. Okay, so
- 9:33I'll stop there, and I was waiting for some more too. I think
- 9:39I went over, but yeah, can we get a little bit, just
- 9:43a little, but I served a few of the men who have read The
- 9:48Catch. Even though I took the approach of designing this story around the character
- 9:54Veronica, who was having a hard time based on what her father observed,
- 9:58and he knew he had to do some kind of intervention, so he prayed
- 10:01and his answer was take her fishing. Use what you know. He's an
- 10:07expert at fishing. So I collected information from one of my family members who's
- 10:13an expert at fishing. I said, tell me about the fish you enjoy
- 10:16catching, and as he began to describe their personality, what it took to
- 10:20catch them, the type of bait they liked, the type of day,
- 10:24where in the lake you had to find them. It was easy. I
- 10:28could easily see which man a male character I would attach to that particular fish,
- 10:33so it was easy to create that and create that from there. But
- 10:37in the stories, even though it's focused on how this daughter was to change
- 10:43her approach and looking for a man, are the man discovering her? It's
- 10:48a lot of nuggets in there in terms of what kind of man you should
- 10:52be looking for and why we're no longer using our due diligence to discover who
- 10:58they are. It's what I call conditions versus characteristics that are positive. Conditions
- 11:03are the things we see on the outside. And I described the fact that
- 11:07when my husband and I walked down the aisle at the age of twenty,
- 11:11you had this beautiful, huge afro. That's a condition. I loved it.
- 11:15I love the way he looked, but he doesn't have that anymore.
- 11:18We've been married forty nine years that Afro has left the building. And so
- 11:22it's an example of how we use the wrong tools when we're trying to explore
- 11:28who this person is. We should be getting to the essence of their heart
- 11:31and not what's on the outside. Those are conditions, and let me tell
- 11:35you all that stuff we're looking at that changes twenty and thirty years down the
- 11:39road. So that's the stories I know. I saw one of my high
- 11:48school I have my reunion a couple of weeks a live by my high school
- 11:52picture and what happened? Woo? Who is you? Like? I said?
- 12:00It was like all of different persons. I really do, really do
- 12:05understand that in congratulations and much blessing fourteen nine years. Yeah, that is
- 12:13beautiful. I know. That was why I didn't want to do this.
- 12:18I didn't want to write, but God was pressuring me. He said,
- 12:20why do you think you've been blessed with this? I really want to know
- 12:24how to get there, how to discover that. And that's the reason again
- 12:28for those books. Between my daughter and God pushing this found on my neck,
- 12:31saying no, you need to talk about it, you need to share
- 12:35it. Yes, God says stop being stingy. I'm not going to So
- 12:43what part of the Wrong Catch was the most fun to write? I think
- 12:50the most fun to write all of it. All the characters were fun to
- 12:56me, all of them. Like I said, hearing about the different fish
- 13:03their personality was so fun and easy for me to match a male character with
- 13:09a particular fish. And I introduce you to some in the first book.
- 13:15There's the catfish, and everybody knows that a catfish is our bottom feeders.
- 13:20They hang out at the bottom of the lake, in the mud, in
- 13:24the dirt, in the garbage. They eat whatever is dead and smelly that
- 13:26comes their way. And so when you think in terms of a man that's
- 13:31like that, he is attracted to smelly bait. A woman who smells as
- 13:35one who has poor self worth, that's what he's looking for. He'll smell
- 13:39the fact that you don't feel good about yourself, that you're worth, you
- 13:43don't value yourself. Those are smells to him, and so he'll be attracted
- 13:48to that kind of smelliness. Then there's the salmon, and it's interesting how
- 13:52women will try to force the salmon into a relationship when the salmon's characteristic is
- 13:58that he hates commitment, don't want it, can't make him. He will
- 14:03not No matter what you try, what traps you try to lay, he
- 14:07is not going to commit. That's a salmon. A salmon will fight the
- 14:11fisher person fishing for him and fly out of the water to knock the hook
- 14:16out of his mouth. Does not want to commit. The sturgeon fish,
- 14:20people who are anglers hate the sturgeon because they can sit there all day trying
- 14:26to catch a sturgeon, and the sturgeon has already nibbled off the bait.
- 14:28They're sneaky and they love to nibble wherever they go. Then there's the puffer
- 14:35fish. And this, again is this example of how we get so caught
- 14:39up on conditions. We look at the outside of the person instead of really
- 14:45truly examining the heart. Even God says he looks at the heart. I
- 14:48said, if God is looking at the heart, what isn't that a clue
- 14:52for us? Look there, not out here. So the pop fish is
- 14:56described as a fish that has human like eyes, human life face. But
- 15:01you agitate that purple fish, that cuteness, that handsomeness goes away, and
- 15:05he puffs up three times in size and becomes poisonous, and so he's your
- 15:09example of how you get into toxic relationships by looking at what's on the next
- 15:16year. And in the story, he's got a lot of money. So
- 15:18what's the point. You're attracted to things that don't matter. And so that's
- 15:22why these stories are weaved the way they are, because we're looking at the
- 15:28wrong thing. Black Diamond, I agree, would you? This is one
- 15:33of the viewers said, this is the kind of book I like to read
- 15:35when you like all your characters. Look at here Where was you two years
- 15:41ago? Man? Oh, one of my dear friends from I think she's
- 15:48from South Carolina also she said, look where were you when I dated all
- 15:52four of Where were you? When I said, I do you know?
- 16:00Yeah? She's out of hers too. Now this one we go back and
- 16:03talk about narcissistic men because again we get so attractive with stuff on the outside.
- 16:10They got money, they're very successful, and we look at all those
- 16:14conditions that don't matter. And so I talk about the trophy fish in here.
- 16:18The trophy fish are those fish are part of a multi million dollar business
- 16:23and so these are the top of the line. So anglers who go after
- 16:26those in a tournament. They're trying to win that money. But these fish,
- 16:33they don't want to get caught, and they're gonna fight you tooth and
- 16:36nail. They're big and they're massive, and the anglers many times will take
- 16:40more than one person trying to catch that one fish. That's how massive they
- 16:44are. And so in the book, we talk about these kind of characters.
- 16:48We talk about the man who walked around and appeared as if he had
- 16:51all this money, but he was riding on the money of his brother,
- 16:56who just happened to be in the uh uh a famous football player and happens
- 17:03to have money. So he's writing on that and so on the outside he
- 17:07looks like he has it all together, but he doesn't have two pennies to
- 17:11run together without his brother. You know what you see? You know you're
- 17:18already blow my mind, and I'm gonna I'm gonna do my geechee. You
- 17:21done blow my mind. Okay, We're gonna take a little break out and
- 17:26we're coming back. I'm gonna try to go ahead and get your pencils and
- 17:30papers together so you can write down these titles because i I'm gonna be reading
- 17:33them. We're gonna take a little break. We'll be back with doctor de
- 17:37Velber. Come on back, you guys. Turn off the lights a candle
- 18:07tonightlemen, imagine, let's take a shower shower together. I was a Monday.
- 18:26You must my dad some wealthy and save ja. Turn off comes girl,
- 18:56I'm want to give you a special treatment. I'm so sweet. Turn
- 19:08I'm sorry, y'all. Y'all know that's my commercial. Y'all know that's my
- 19:11song. I love that commercial, Black Diamond, I love it. I
- 19:15love it. So we're back. She done blew off our mind. She
- 19:21actually turned on the light because she got oh my gosh, I was sitting
- 19:26up here thinking the narcissis yeah, the puffer fish and the salmon. Oh
- 19:32yeah, yeah that say you know what. Yeah, I'm sitting up here
- 19:41and I'm thinking about just the relationships that I've been in, and I'm like,
- 19:47yeah, yeah, so so okay, off stript question. What would
- 19:56the right catch be? As in fish wise, who would be be?
- 20:03Well, he's in book one because the daughter does do her homework. She
- 20:11does takes what her father gives her. After that trip, she recognizes that
- 20:15she got out of some very serious issues that she could have gone wrong.
- 20:19Had she stayed in any of those relationships. So her father tells her stop
- 20:23focusing on him and focus on you, which is the message in all of
- 20:27them that a lot of times we blame the guy when it really is us.
- 20:34Examine your own heart and make sure you are ready, because that was
- 20:38one of the things one of the readers said in reading my advanced copy of
- 20:42my new book. She said, I saw myself and I've recognized I wasn't
- 20:47even ready for marriage when she got married. And so it really does make
- 20:52you stop blaming everybody else and examining your heart. And remember I talked about
- 20:56the catfish who loves garbage. If that's the kind of heart you have,
- 21:00then you want to take a look at what's there. Because what you want
- 21:03to do is put in the work to make sure you're ready to present the
- 21:06best version of yourself to that ideal person that you want. And let me
- 21:11tell you, he's not going to arrive on a white horse. He is
- 21:15not a prince, So this is not a rom com, this is true
- 21:18life. He's not coming on a white horse because a white horse represents war,
- 21:22just in on a donkey, which represented peace. So you got to
- 21:26get that kind of stuff and erase your idea of what he should look like
- 21:33and focus on what you should be. And that's what the book does a
- 21:37lot. It talks about this is why she missed these signs, and we
- 21:42talk about red flags, red stands for r ed, retreat, extremely dangerous,
- 21:49and we just ignore them all and what he looks for. I'm sorry
- 21:56to interrupt you, but yeah, that is. It says, focus on
- 22:02you, not on him. Because when a man findeth, and that's the
- 22:06other key, he finds you, not you go out to find him.
- 22:11He finds you. And there are some men from my experience who've gotten into
- 22:17relationships based on the woman encouraging him. Come on and Mary, let's get
- 22:21there. And he began questioning him himself after he got married, wondering if
- 22:26he should have waited because he didn't do the chasing she did. And so
- 22:30you remove his ability to find what he should find as his ruby. And
- 22:36I talk about in the book, even the book that's coming out about the
- 22:40man who date the wrong women. If you want a ruby, make sure
- 22:44you're at ruby level. And so it's the same for the woman. If
- 22:48that's what you want him to find, you need to make sure you get
- 22:52that ruby in the water. Who love y'all? I told y'all. So
- 23:02this is our segment when we do the fun questions. Now, I do
- 23:06not send my authors the fun questions because I like you guys to think off
- 23:08your head. Okay. So I have been listening to music today and I
- 23:15had the chance to listen well to view the reunion tour of Kirk Franklin.
- 23:22Okay, so I have a question. I have a question. I have
- 23:26a question. Your main character, let's get his name. What's your main
- 23:30male character's name, Pastor Grayson. If we are looking at Christian fiction Christian
- 23:42music, who would he be the equivalent to? He would be the equivalent
- 23:52to one of the He comes from the seventies era, so he would be
- 23:59the equivalent to some one of the gospel most likely Walter Hawkins. My granny
- 24:10used to always listen to Walter Hawkins. Yeah, yeah, I think I'm
- 24:15getting people mixed up. But wasn't he the one that wrote the song thank
- 24:21you Lord for all You've done? Are you done for me? That was
- 24:23my mama's song. Yoh, that was my mommy song and my granmy So
- 24:30if you had could go back, that would be one. Okay. So
- 24:33your female character, what was her name? Her name is Veronica. Now
- 24:37she's a millennial, so who would she be? Most likely Kirk Franklin,
- 24:45Mary Mary? Okay? I was thinking tam La Man. I know,
- 24:57no, Oh, I got that would be Franklin. She gives you okay,
- 25:04all right. So when do you play music when you write or do
- 25:11you know? I do not. I'm like a quiet and usually like early
- 25:15early morning, like four a m. That's my favorite time to write,
- 25:18four am to about eight or nine. Oh wow, you you early early
- 25:25rides. You go, girl. I see four am a lot because I
- 25:30don't sleep. One more question, how did you celebrate the the end of
- 25:45your book. I think I fell on the on the carpet and just laid
- 25:49out for a minute saying thank you, and then my husband treated me.
- 25:57And that's the thing. I had a problem with celebrating an accomplishment, and
- 26:06I don't see a lot of authors that do that. Oh yeah, and
- 26:11shout out to your husband for taking you out and treating you. So we
- 26:18are coming to the end of the show, so you have to give us
- 26:21some rundown. I know, right at thirty minutes we going by, so
- 26:26quick get to it, and that's what I was telling you, Come on
- 26:29back, come on back, you hate the trees. You've got some slots
- 26:33open in twenty twenty four, which I am everyone already booking for twenty twenty
- 26:38four. So if you want to be on a show, email me Sie
- 26:42book gallon friends at gmail dot com or hit me on Facebook, but you
- 26:48have to give us your titles where we can follow you. I see that
- 26:56you have you're doing virtual book tour, so I am going to make sure
- 27:02I share that so they can catch you on other platforms. But go ahead
- 27:06and reach out to your readers. How can they do that to you?
- 27:10Easy? They can go to my website to doctor Velma. It's doctor Velma
- 27:15bagbe dot com and make sure to subscribe because I'm gonna have a lot of

- 27:42to me on the Instagram. I'm doctor Velma Bagbee, the author. I'm
- 27:47not the author, but author. I'm on Twitter as well as LinkedIn and
- 27:52threads on Facebook. All right, do you have a virtual link to your
- 28:00services on Sundays? I don't now because we're in the we're in the transition
- 28:06stage now. We just recently closed our ministry last year, so we're in
- 28:08the transition stage trying to determine where we're being sent and so that's what we're
- 28:15in the process of doing. And that's a lot of people are at that
- 28:18point. And I think it's the pandemic that really really had everybody all over.
- 28:23You're not I've heard about I'm known too personally and I've heard about three
- 28:30of them. Yeah, and there was a lot of them. But you
- 28:33know what, he's still using you because it's a season. Everything you have
- 28:40to talk about. I'm like pulling, like, Okay, that's you.
- 28:45That's you. How they say sweep in front of your own front door.
- 28:48My front door right now is dirty and I'm going to sweep and it's going
- 28:52to be spot Let's all thanks to you, and I thank you, Oh,
- 28:59thank you too. I appreciate it. Thank you for one for writing
- 29:03this book, two for making it fiction so I'll be able to understand it.
- 29:07And three, thank you for coming on my podcast. I'm enjoying it.
- 29:11I really enjoyed myself. Thank you for making it fun. Thank you,
