- 0:00Sex, culture and the collapse of civilizations.
- 0:03I'm going to be revisiting JD Unwin's Warning.
- 0:07I'm Jay Fallon. This is the Slippery Slope
- 0:09podcast. download. While back, I released an
- 0:22episode digging into the work of JD Unwin.
- 0:26He's the anthropologist who studied 86 civilizations and
- 0:30found the same pattern every time When sexual morality
- 0:34collapses, the civilization collapses with it.
- 0:38That episode sparked a bit of discussion, and honestly, the
- 0:42more I've continued looking into Unwin and the scholars who
- 0:46followed him, the more convinced I am that his warnings weren't
- 0:51just academic observations. They're almost verging on
- 0:56prophecy. So today I want to revisit that
- 0:59earlier episode, sharpen the arguments, and expand on the
- 1:02research with insights from Mary Ebberstack, Kirk Dunstan, Pastor
- 1:08Jack Hibbs, and Scripture itself.
- 1:10Because everything Unwin documented nearly a century ago
- 1:15is unfolding right in front of us.
- 1:19Unwin studied 86 civilizations across history, different eras,
- 1:23religions and geographies and found the same outcome every
- 1:28time. His conclusion?
- 1:30Civilizations rise when sexual restraint is strong.
- 1:36They peak when monogamy and stable families dominate, and
- 1:41they decline when sexual morality loosens, and within 3
- 1:46generations of a sexual revolution, the civilization
- 1:50collapses or is conquered. He called it a monotonous
- 1:55repetition, and he published this in 1934, decades before our
- 2:02own sexual revolution. So from the light le.
- 2:08So from the late 1960s onwards, thank you hippies.
- 2:14Western culture embraced sexual liberation as progress, but
- 2:19according to Unwin's research, this wasn't progress, it was the
- 2:23beginning of civilizational decay, Unwin said.
- 2:27The first generation after sexual liberation still looks
- 2:31stable. The second generation begins to
- 2:34show cracks. The third generation experiences
- 2:38rapid collapse. We are entering that third
- 2:42generation right now. Mary Eberstadt's book Primal
- 2:48Screams adds another layer to Unwin's findings.
- 2:51She argues that the sexual revolution didn't just change
- 2:56behaviour, it destroyed the family and with it, the
- 3:01foundation of identity. Her research shows sexual
- 3:06liberation leads to family collapse, family collapse leads
- 3:12to identity collapse, and identity collapse leads to
- 3:16social chaos. She links the rise of mass
- 3:20killings, skyrocketing depression, extreme identity
- 3:25groups, tribalism, political fragmentation to the loss of the
- 3:32extended family structure that once gave people belonging and
- 3:37purpose. Today's identity politics isn't
- 3:42a political movement, it's a Primal Scream from people who no
- 3:47longer know who they are. So everything that Unwin and
- 3:54Ebstadt describe aligns with what Scripture has been saying
- 3:58for thousands of years. I was listening to some
- 4:02preaching by Pastor Jack Hibbs and he put it bluntly, saying
- 4:08that pornography and sexual immorality are more spiritual
- 4:13than physical. He points out something
- 4:16remarkable. Scripture never says stealing
- 4:21while stealing is a sin, But scripture never says that
- 4:25stealing is a sin against your own soul.
- 4:28It never says murder is a sin against your own soul, and it
- 4:33never since says cursing is a sin against your own soul.
- 4:38They are sins. You should not do them.
- 4:41But it doesn't say that these things are a sin against your
- 4:45own soul. But sexual immorality, That's
- 4:49different. It reaches into the spiritual
- 4:53realm. It creates bonds, wounds, and
- 4:57consequences that go far deeper than physical actions.
- 5:03Paul writes in First Corinthians 618.
- 5:08Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits
- 5:14are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually sins
- 5:21against their own body. Sexual sin is unique.
- 5:26It damages the very core of a person, their identity, their
- 5:31soul, their spiritual integrity. And when sexual immorality
- 5:37becomes normalised across an entire culture, the spiritual
- 5:42damage becomes civilizational. This is the layer Unwin couldn't
- 5:48measure but scripture reveals. Unwin described the final stage
- 5:54of a collapsing civilization as zoistic, a culture that rejects
- 6:00religion, rejects restraint, rejects responsibility, becomes
- 6:07self absorbed, becomes obsessed with pleasure, loses interest in
- 6:13the future, stops caring about anything beyond the self.
- 6:20And this is exactly where we are today.
- 6:24And Scripture describes the same thing with absolute accuracy.
- 6:29Paul writes in Second Timothy 32.
- 6:32For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,
- 6:37boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents,
- 6:42ungrateful and unholy. Unwin's zoistic culture and
- 6:48Paul's prophetic warning are parallel descriptions of the
- 6:53same phenomenon. A generation consumed with
- 6:57itself, obsessed with pleasure, rejecting authority, rejecting
- 7:03truth, and rejecting God. Today's generation isn't even
- 7:09atheist. Atheist requires some thought.
- 7:14Today's generation is simply non religious by default.
- 7:19They're too uninterested in God, uninterested in truth,
- 7:23uninterested in anything beyond their own feelings.
- 7:28This is the final stage before collapse.
- 7:34The writer Kirk Dursten makes a powerful point.
- 7:37God's moral laws aren't arbitrary rules meant to
- 7:42restrict us. They are operating instructions
- 7:46for human flourishing, Dursten writes.
- 7:49God's moral laws pertaining to sexuality, although they may
- 7:53restrain us from some immediate pleasure, protect us from
- 7:59enormous long term suffering while maximising our long term
- 8:04flourishing. Unwin's research, completely
- 8:08secular, confirms this. Eberstadt's research confirms
- 8:13this, Scripture confirms this, and history confirms this.
- 8:18When a society abandons God's design for sexuality, it
- 8:24destroys itself, King Solomon said.
- 8:29There is nothing new under the sun.
- 8:32Civilizations have risen and fallen for the same reasons for
- 8:38thousands of years. We are not special and we are
- 8:42not exempt. We are not immune.
- 8:47We are simply repeating the same pattern Unwin documented in 86
- 8:53cultures before us. And unless something radically
- 8:58changes, and when I say that, I mean, unless our nation cries
- 9:04out to God, we will meet the same fate, But that's just my
- 9:11opinion. I'm Jay Fallon, thanks for
- 9:13listening to the Slippery Slope podcast.
- 9:16They just. Feel
