- 0:01Speaker 1: In this corner, standing at six foot five weight class unknowns,
- 0:04Speaker 1: but hailing from the city of Sins. Put your hands
- 0:06Speaker 1: together for Jamison. Well and in this then it at
- 0:10Speaker 1: five foot ten, weighing in at town and coming to
- 0:14Speaker 1: us from his super secret bunker with no ac in Tucson, Arizona.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Put your hands together for Luis Montemo. Thank you. Welcome
- 0:23Speaker 2: back to another episode of the Mixed Company Podcast. Of course,
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'm one half of the show, Jamison, and as always
- 0:30Speaker 2: I'm joined by Luise and together we bring you Mixed
- 0:32Speaker 2: Company Podcasts. Luise, it's gonna minute, man. How's everything going,
- 0:37Speaker 2: What's new? All that good stuff?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Man, Jamison, I'm so glad to be here recording on
- 0:42Speaker 3: our first show of October, officially the start of spooky season,
- 0:45Speaker 3: my favorite time of the year. Are you a fan
- 0:47Speaker 3: of Halloween, horror movies, all that stuff.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I am not a Halloween person. I don't mind scary movies.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I don't really get scared a lot, but I don't
- 0:56Speaker 2: mind it. But I'm not a Halloween person. I'm not
- 0:57Speaker 2: a costume person or anything like that. So I joined
- 1:01Speaker 2: from a farm, just not like the Oh, let's go
- 1:03Speaker 2: to Halloween part of Honta houses not quite my thing,
- 1:07Speaker 2: but I'm here in spirit though.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Perfect to be here in spirit for Halloween. Yeah No,
- 1:13Speaker 3: I love scary movies. That's honestly my favorite part is
- 1:17Speaker 3: all the decorations and stuff. I don't get dressed up either,
- 1:19Speaker 3: you know, when I do go out, I just wear
- 1:21Speaker 3: a suit. But I just love the vibe. I love
- 1:24Speaker 3: the ambiance. I love the creativity and costumes. I was
- 1:27Speaker 3: still one of my favorite costumes from back when I
- 1:29Speaker 3: was in college. It was a bunch of fret guys.
- 1:32Speaker 3: One guy there was like eight guys dressed like chickens
- 1:35Speaker 3: and one guy up front dress like Colonel Sanders rolling
- 1:37Speaker 3: in a group, and that was really cool. I geesuz word,
- 1:43Speaker 3: didn't I go to college. I went to college at
- 1:44Speaker 3: ASU in Tempe, Pima Community College in Tucson, University of Arizona,
- 1:49Speaker 3: and Tucson just to get a worthless political science degree.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Howse ASU ASU was?
- 1:57Speaker 3: How about this I had? I would have had a
- 2:01Speaker 3: lot more fun if I were of age and had
- 2:03Speaker 3: any friends. I yeah, I moved from Texas to Arizona
- 2:08Speaker 3: and didn't know anybody, and I feel like I kind
- 2:11Speaker 3: of missed out on a lot of the college experience.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Plus I had to work my way through college, so
- 2:15Speaker 3: I didn't have a lot of free time.
- 2:16Speaker 2: So going to school for the same same that similar
- 2:21Speaker 2: story about Vegas, so I understand.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but no, I mean, I think when I moved
- 2:26Speaker 3: to Tucson, I ended up making more friends, getting out more,
- 2:30Speaker 3: ended up meeting our producer Jabari Davis when I was
- 2:33Speaker 3: twenty one. So let's just say he and I had
- 2:35Speaker 3: a great time in my early twenties in his mid twenties,
- 2:39Speaker 3: so you know, I didn't I didn't need the college
- 2:42Speaker 3: scene to have fun. I guess if that's if you
- 2:44Speaker 3: get my drift. Fair enough, fair enough, But anyway, Yeah,
- 2:48Speaker 3: let's got a lot to talk about today, so let's
- 2:51Speaker 3: dive right in. We usually get to the news first,
- 2:54Speaker 3: so let me flip through the Boxing Gazette, which is
- 2:57Speaker 3: the finest news source in the boxing world. This issue, well,
- 3:01Speaker 3: the Boxing Set actually is brought to you by Delightful
- 3:04Speaker 3: Smoke Shop and Apparel in Tucson, Arizona, so our first sponsor.
- 3:07Speaker 3: You can find them at six two one seven East
- 3:09Speaker 3: twenty second Street. They're open seven days a week, so
- 3:11Speaker 3: stop by for lots of goodies and hoodies. So thanks
- 3:14Speaker 3: a lot to Delightful Smoke Shop. You know, the show's
- 3:17Speaker 3: getting some attention. I think once I was the only
- 3:20Speaker 3: guy pretty much in boxing media to say that Bud
- 3:22Speaker 3: Crawford was going to win that Canelo fight. I think
- 3:24Speaker 3: people are starting to perk their ears up.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Honestly, I hope so, I hope. So we got sponsors.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Now we moved on up. But no, that's that's cool.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And uh, honestly, like looking back at the you were
- 3:38Speaker 2: spot on on Canelo in terms of the slow decline
- 3:44Speaker 2: of Canelo. You the way you described him. Looking back
- 3:47Speaker 2: on it, I'm surprised we didn't. We were not more
- 3:50Speaker 2: adamant about Crawford winning that far. I think we were
- 3:55Speaker 2: shocked that he were on decision. I think that was
- 3:57Speaker 2: the biggest thing because of hell, the fight, the cars,
- 4:00Speaker 2: so I mean going around eleven and tied, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 2: and it wasn't time like it wasn't. But you know,
- 4:06Speaker 2: looking back on its like, hey, you were really spot
- 4:08Speaker 2: on on the clon because most people don't understand boxers
- 4:13Speaker 2: decline and they're still winning. The only time you mentioned
- 4:15Speaker 2: a box of clients that I get knocked out or
- 4:17Speaker 2: they're getting blown out in fights. Well, you're still winning.
- 4:20Speaker 2: You're winning pretty impressively. The common person doesn't understand the
- 4:25Speaker 2: slippage of a boxer until they get exposed, and that
- 4:29Speaker 2: didn't happen until last month. So no, you were you
- 4:31Speaker 2: were definitely spot on about that.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Yes, and but also let's not forget but the episode
- 4:37Speaker 3: before that fight, I straight up said, uh, Bud craft
- 4:40Speaker 3: for by decision, so and a lot of people were
- 4:44Speaker 3: giving it to Canelo, you know, I Uh, I to
- 4:47Speaker 3: be fair, I went back and forth for months, months
- 4:50Speaker 3: and months, but really when it came down to it,
- 4:53Speaker 3: I put my chips on butt and uh, you know
- 4:55Speaker 3: I was right. And speaking of which, I actually wanted
- 4:58Speaker 3: to start this segment at him because Bud Crawford's coach,
- 5:02Speaker 3: Bernie Davis said that Bud will return for the ring
- 5:07Speaker 3: only if he gets offered one hundred million dollar payday.
- 5:11Speaker 3: So uh, supposedly he wants everyone to fight for Undisputed
- 5:14Speaker 3: at one sixty and then Bud would take that fight.
- 5:17Speaker 3: You know, we've praised the man a lot. You know,
- 5:20Speaker 3: we've said that he's underrated, hasn't gotten the respect he deserves,
- 5:24Speaker 3: and I'm sure he got a really big payday from
- 5:26Speaker 3: this Canelo fight well earned. Do we think he could
- 5:29Speaker 3: pull off another one hundred million dollar payday on his
- 5:33Speaker 3: next fight? I don't think so, you tell me so.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Only way he could get one hundred million on the
- 5:38Speaker 2: next five there's no there's one hundred million dollar fight
- 5:42Speaker 2: out there, like that's the thing you even have to anything.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I don't really want to see that fight happening in
- 5:48Speaker 2: but they ran it back on watching. So if he
- 5:51Speaker 2: wants to make a hundred million, which I understand the member,
- 5:53Speaker 2: Bud's getting up there in age. So with that being said,
- 5:59Speaker 2: there's not a whole lot more fights left. This last
- 6:02Speaker 2: petday was very good. He's probably set for life. I
- 6:06Speaker 2: think got fifty plus with this fight. Normally, even with
- 6:09Speaker 2: the kids, are all by one woman, except for this
- 6:11Speaker 2: last one that kind of came out the blue. No
- 6:13Speaker 2: judgment here. He should be set for life getting another
- 6:17Speaker 2: one hundred I understand it. Get it while you can,
- 6:19Speaker 2: because I don't know who else he could fight to
- 6:22Speaker 2: get that kind of money, Like, there's no one else
- 6:24Speaker 2: out there outside of Canelos. So I'm cool for running
- 6:27Speaker 2: it back in May. I'm all. I mean, I get it,
- 6:30Speaker 2: but there's no one hundred million dollar fight, there's no
- 6:32Speaker 2: there's no boots, there's no there's no one. There's no
- 6:35Speaker 2: there's no one who went to sixty. There's no one
- 6:37Speaker 2: who won sixty he can fight. No, there's no draw.
- 6:40Speaker 2: There's just no there's no one that brings the casual
- 6:44Speaker 2: boxing fan out at one sixty. The even getting we're close,
- 6:48Speaker 2: I mean, getting fifty million is is a tall task.
- 6:53Speaker 2: One hundred million, all right, thinking all the fights that
- 6:56Speaker 2: have drawn one hundred million over the last twenty years,
- 6:59Speaker 2: Floyd and packet out, Floyd McGregor, Canello and Triple G
- 7:06Speaker 2: didn't knew those numbers. They didn't get over they knew this,
- 7:09Speaker 2: and then of course this pass fight those aren't. You
- 7:12Speaker 2: gotta have two superstars you got You can't have once
- 7:16Speaker 2: of a star and a boxing guy don't work there.
- 7:18Speaker 2: You got to have two people to where their whole
- 7:22Speaker 2: country is talking about the fight, not just sports fans.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So yeah, there's no way, Yeah, no, hell no, there's
- 7:28Speaker 2: no way. Yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I mean his trainer was, you know, as as coach,
- 7:34Speaker 3: not but himself. But he's saying, well, but it doesn't
- 7:37Speaker 3: really have anything else to prove. If he's gonna come back,
- 7:38Speaker 3: it's got to be for that size of pay day.
- 7:40Speaker 3: So the implication there is Bud's ready to go. You know,
- 7:43Speaker 3: he's ready to dip, and you know, I how would
- 7:47Speaker 3: you feel about that? I think, yeah, his legacy is security,
- 7:50Speaker 3: is undefeated. You know, he beat the face of boxing
- 7:53Speaker 3: in a very very clear way. It wasn't one of
- 7:56Speaker 3: those like, well, you know, he could have He probably
- 7:59Speaker 3: got to give decision or whatever people say. I mean,
- 8:03Speaker 3: if he does decide to bail, you know, how do
- 8:05Speaker 3: we feel about it?
- 8:06Speaker 2: He's not bailing. But at the same time, but has
- 8:08Speaker 2: never been the A side of a big fight, even
- 8:10Speaker 2: the fight versus Spence, even though he was a better
- 8:12Speaker 2: boxer and he was a more healthier fighter, for sure,
- 8:14Speaker 2: he was not the A side going into it. Spence's
- 8:17Speaker 2: name and brand was bigger. Now, better boxer, pulled different conversation,
- 8:23Speaker 2: But the brand what sold the fight, Who made the fight?
- 8:26Speaker 2: Who got to make a percentage? That was Spence obviously
- 8:29Speaker 2: going to this fight. Canelo got the bigger the percentage
- 8:32Speaker 2: of the pot. He was the A side. Crawford has
- 8:36Speaker 2: not been the A side of a mega fight. The
- 8:38Speaker 2: next fight he fights, he will be, even if him
- 8:41Speaker 2: and Canalo do a fifty to fifty split. It would
- 8:44Speaker 2: be both and they're both interests best interests to do
- 8:48Speaker 2: something like that. But if he wants to make a
- 8:49Speaker 2: bigger money, he has to run the Canalo thing back.
- 8:52Speaker 3: That's the only way, right, I mean, he if I
- 8:56Speaker 3: don't think. I don't want him to retire, but I
- 8:58Speaker 3: don't think he will because what I said said after
- 9:00Speaker 3: the Mega fight was that his cache is higher than ever.
- 9:03Speaker 3: You know, so many more people know his name, No,
- 9:05Speaker 3: his skills more than anything. You can know his name,
- 9:08Speaker 3: but you might not have known. You know, what he
- 9:10Speaker 3: looks like in the ring. Very impressive performance. So I
- 9:15Speaker 3: know I can't see him not taking this cachet out
- 9:17Speaker 3: for a spin and see what it can do. Yeah,
- 9:19Speaker 3: not one hundred ms. There's still way. But I was
- 9:22Speaker 3: just I was interested in why his coach brought that
- 9:26Speaker 3: up and said, that's the condition.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I'll tell you why. I'm gonna tell you why, because look,
- 9:30Speaker 2: everybody made the biggest bag they ever made a month ago.
- 9:33Speaker 2: That's why everybody, whatever check they got or whatever agreement
- 9:37Speaker 2: they had from the trainers to the corner to the
- 9:39Speaker 2: doctors and the trip, whoever's on payroll, had a very
- 9:43Speaker 2: very great day that Monday when the check cleared. So
- 9:47Speaker 2: that's why everybody saw it one hundred million because they
- 9:49Speaker 2: want want more, because they also know what it is. Now.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I don't get people's finances, but but those are simple life.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So I don't see him going broke. All these other people, Hell,
- 9:58Speaker 2: they can get one more b they pay, they they
- 10:00Speaker 2: gonna take it too. If they can get a six
- 10:03Speaker 2: figure check in their name, they gonna go at it.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So I get it. I understand one hundred percent.
- 10:10Speaker 3: So I agree with you. Yeah, I totally agree with that.
- 10:13Speaker 3: I guess you're right. I mean, you get it, you
- 10:15Speaker 3: get a little taste, and you're like, damn, I want
- 10:17Speaker 3: some more.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Like I'll do one better. I know someone who's involved
- 10:21Speaker 2: in TAYSI Furies Camp. I can't go out of his name,
- 10:23Speaker 2: but he's involved in some way, shape and form. The
- 10:26Speaker 2: amount of money he was getting paid just to be
- 10:30Speaker 2: a part of the camp was enough to basically chill
- 10:34Speaker 2: for like several years if he chose to do so.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So that's why you hear people be like, hey, yeah,
- 10:41Speaker 2: we got one more in this, We got we got
- 10:43Speaker 2: a nothing one in this because the money's too big.
- 10:45Speaker 2: And here's the thing. You don't know what the future holds,
- 10:48Speaker 2: so you don't know what fights might be out there
- 10:51Speaker 2: or how long you will be in demand. Because, like
- 10:54Speaker 2: we talked about when we first started the show, the
- 10:56Speaker 2: reason why this fight took place is because you can't
- 10:59Speaker 2: keep on threat all this Firelessentrones matchup, this matchup in
- 11:03Speaker 2: it never working out because people lose interest. Sometimes the
- 11:06Speaker 2: money just isn't there all the time. So that's why
- 11:08Speaker 2: you got to strike while the iron's hot. And that's
- 11:10Speaker 2: why it would not surprise me if we were to
- 11:12Speaker 2: see a rematch, even though I don't think we see
- 11:14Speaker 2: a different outcome, but just the monetary wise, I don't
- 11:19Speaker 2: think either fighter can do anything more to get anywhere
- 11:25Speaker 2: near They just left and there's another opportunity to get that.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I don't see why not.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I went on record as saying I do want
- 11:34Speaker 3: him to run it back. You know, just it is
- 11:37Speaker 3: a bit like I said, Chasing the Dragon, you know,
- 11:38Speaker 3: one that feeling that excitement. It's not gonna be the same,
- 11:41Speaker 3: but you know it's still people are still going to
- 11:43Speaker 3: be excited for a rematch. But again, based on what's
- 11:47Speaker 3: been said that Budd said he wants to go down
- 11:50Speaker 3: to one sixty. You know, it doesn't appear that that's
- 11:52Speaker 3: the case. So I don't know. It's hard to say.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I mean one thing, I'm going to make sure that
- 11:58Speaker 3: we all get correct because I've seen this an article saying,
- 12:01Speaker 3: but is the first person or only person to be
- 12:04Speaker 3: undisputed in three weight classes. He's the first male fighter,
- 12:07Speaker 3: the first person ever do that was the quote Clarissa Shields,
- 12:10Speaker 3: who went to the heavyweight division earlier this year and
- 12:15Speaker 3: became undisputed in three different weight classes. So make sure
- 12:18Speaker 3: we give we give the quote her flowers. But yeah,
- 12:22Speaker 3: it's it's a big big deal for bud to. He's
- 12:24Speaker 3: the only one of two people and does he want
- 12:26Speaker 3: to be undisputed at one sixty and four different weight classes.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Nobody's ever done that, and that would be that's just
- 12:32Speaker 3: I don't know. That blows my mind.
- 12:34Speaker 2: And my thing is, you got to compromise something. So
- 12:38Speaker 2: if you want that, that's fine, but you're not gonna
- 12:40Speaker 2: get the big payday that you're looking for. That's the thing.
- 12:43Speaker 2: So you can do that, that's cool, But it ain't
- 12:45Speaker 2: no hundred million dollar fight in that division. I don't
- 12:48Speaker 2: I don't see it. I could be wrong, but I
- 12:50Speaker 2: don't see another opponent that could bring in anywhere close.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I think if Bud got twenty five million, I think
- 12:58Speaker 2: that would be a stretch. I think that would be impressed.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And that's not saying that's anything matchwards but at all,
- 13:04Speaker 2: that's not I'm not here for that. I'm just saying
- 13:06Speaker 2: what it what it takes to make a big fight
- 13:09Speaker 2: a big draw. You got to have two name brand
- 13:12Speaker 2: guys in that ring that people from other countries are
- 13:15Speaker 2: tuning in and paying for and talking about. And I
- 13:19Speaker 2: don't see that in the one sixty division. I personally
- 13:22Speaker 2: do not agreed.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I mean, that's probably his biggest gamble, or not gamble,
- 13:27Speaker 3: just kind of what he can set his sights on
- 13:28Speaker 3: as being the only guy that's ever been you know,
- 13:30Speaker 3: the only person who's ever been undisputed in four weight classes,
- 13:34Speaker 3: and that might be what he wants to go out on,
- 13:36Speaker 3: which is cool, you know, I think he could do it.
- 13:39Speaker 3: If anybody could never bet against Budge. It's kind of
- 13:42Speaker 3: the it's kind of the kind of the the mantra
- 13:44Speaker 3: around these parts on this show. That's what That's what
- 13:47Speaker 3: everybody says. In my house. I love alone, but yeah.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Yeah, but yeah, I mean I think that that would
- 13:57Speaker 4: be kind of his his big last hurrah if he
- 14:00Speaker 4: wants to kind of wind down his career.
- 14:01Speaker 3: And yeah, he just turned I believe he just turned
- 14:03Speaker 3: thirty eight when they had a big birthday celebration in
- 14:06Speaker 3: Omaha for him. Is that what is ages now?
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yes?
- 14:09Speaker 3: Yes, yes, big birthday celebration in Omaha at the end
- 14:14Speaker 3: of September when, by the way, he was pulled over
- 14:16Speaker 3: by some cops and got hassled for having a gun
- 14:18Speaker 3: in the car, which Nebraska is an open carry state,
- 14:21Speaker 3: but let's be let's be real, probably opened carry for
- 14:24Speaker 3: only some people, just putting that out there.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and also like is Tarms Crawford Omaha, Like he's
- 14:32Speaker 2: literally the most famous person in the city.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Exactly exactly, like what are we doing here him and
- 14:39Speaker 3: Ernie Chambers for former state representative of my gun right right? Anyway,
- 14:45Speaker 3: So yeah, let's I'm still very excited to see, you know,
- 14:48Speaker 3: what happens with Buds next move and it's the world
- 14:51Speaker 3: is oyster, so you know, really excited to see where
- 14:55Speaker 3: what he pulls out of his hat next, because again
- 14:58Speaker 3: mantra is don't bet against Bud all right, Next stop
- 15:02Speaker 3: another superstar name who draws big, big crowds in big money.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Many Pacquiao, my man has been in the conversation a lot.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Turns out that his son, and Manuel Pacio Junior, will
- 15:13Speaker 3: make his pro debut on his dad's new promotional company MPP. Yeah,
- 15:17Speaker 3: Many Pakia Promotion. So I'm wondering, is this okay? Tell me,
- 15:23Speaker 3: tell me how you feel about to So for.
- 15:25Speaker 2: The longest time, people like Manny, like everyone talks about
- 15:28Speaker 2: Floyd money and all the other boxers getting screwed out
- 15:31Speaker 2: of money. Bob Aaron was getting funded by Many Pakiao.
- 15:34Speaker 2: All these years, Many Pakiao's fights were literally keeping top
- 15:38Speaker 2: break and floats. All right, I'm glad that many Pakia's
- 15:43Speaker 2: own promotional company. I'm glad he's doing better on the
- 15:46Speaker 2: business side of things because there were some one of
- 15:48Speaker 2: the biggest reasons why the Floyd fight actually happened because
- 15:51Speaker 2: Many Pakiao was struggling financially. So I'm glad that Many
- 15:56Speaker 2: has a business ide taken care of. Even though shouldn't
- 15:59Speaker 2: be fighting his ageress either here nor there. Having his
- 16:01Speaker 2: son fight is very interesting, but keeping all that in
- 16:04Speaker 2: house is very smart. If he is gonna box, have
- 16:07Speaker 2: it under your umbrella, and that's something that's very smart.
- 16:09Speaker 2: It makes a lot of sense on all different accounts.
- 16:11Speaker 2: So that's very cool to see.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I'm I'm totally on board for many
- 16:16Speaker 3: having a promotional company and fighting under his own, having
- 16:19Speaker 3: his own umbrella. My only thing because of me, I'm
- 16:22Speaker 3: always wondering, is that why you came back to set
- 16:24Speaker 3: up your nipple baby son or you know, I mean,
- 16:28Speaker 3: I guess if you can, if you can set up
- 16:30Speaker 3: the family with with you know, your name and back
- 16:33Speaker 3: of why wouldn't you? But like, you know, is this
- 16:35Speaker 3: another Nico Ali watch situation? No?
- 16:37Speaker 2: So here's the thing though, in boxing, you can't really
- 16:41Speaker 2: do the nepotism thing because you still got to fight.
- 16:43Speaker 2: But you can't. It's not like office job where you
- 16:45Speaker 2: just put somebody at CEO or at vice president. In
- 16:48Speaker 2: this Nah, you gotta boxing. You go do that so much.
- 16:52Speaker 2: That's why some of the most famous boxer sons have
- 16:55Speaker 2: failed because boxing gotta be in you. You can't fake boxing.
- 16:59Speaker 2: I can't want to more than you. If you don't
- 17:01Speaker 2: want it, you will get exposed extremely quickly. However, Manny,
- 17:05Speaker 2: being as powerful he is and as popular as he
- 17:08Speaker 2: is in the Philippines without popular is in this in
- 17:11Speaker 2: this country and around the world. Him having a promotion
- 17:15Speaker 2: company is extremely smart because there's a lot of people
- 17:19Speaker 2: the size of Mannipaciao that are fighters that aren't strong
- 17:22Speaker 2: enough to do UFC, but are quick and strong enough
- 17:25Speaker 2: to do boxing. That's a very, very very smart business
- 17:29Speaker 2: venture for him. I could see him doing very well.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I mean, in the Philippines, he's basically the most famous
- 17:36Speaker 2: athlete there is, so if any boxers coming up, he
- 17:39Speaker 2: automatically is going to get them. There's no way he doesn't.
- 17:42Speaker 2: So just by that, and if he's the guy that's
- 17:44Speaker 2: also helping with training and getting guys on the right track,
- 17:48Speaker 2: I think it's a no brainer. So I think it's
- 17:50Speaker 2: a very good thing. As long as he's nfl right reasons,
- 17:53Speaker 2: as long as he's trying to promote boxing and make
- 17:55Speaker 2: sure his boxes are ready and willing, I think it's
- 17:58Speaker 2: a great situation.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm sure that there's a lot of trainers
- 18:03Speaker 3: everybody who wants to be, you know, working with Manny
- 18:06Speaker 3: just because of his name, you know, his legacy, cachet,
- 18:10Speaker 3: et cetera. But my thing is he's still planning on
- 18:13Speaker 3: coming backs, he says, potentially January under MPP many promotions.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Should he should he still keeping if this is his
- 18:21Speaker 3: next venture, and of course he's maybe trying to, you know,
- 18:25Speaker 3: settle some money issues. Does he need to keep fighting?
- 18:27Speaker 3: Does he need to come back?
- 18:28Speaker 2: I think he's better with the money now than he
- 18:31Speaker 2: was once upon time. I know there are some tax
- 18:32Speaker 2: issues well and like ten years ago, but I think
- 18:35Speaker 2: he's better now. With that being said, the thing about
- 18:38Speaker 2: the promotion company and the fighting at the same simultaneously
- 18:43Speaker 2: is basically, you get to keep a check. So instead
- 18:45Speaker 2: of paying a promotion company X amount of dollars, that
- 18:48Speaker 2: all goes to you under your entity. So that makes
- 18:51Speaker 2: a lot of sense. We saw Oscar was the originator
- 18:54Speaker 2: of I know, we can slam. We can talk about
- 18:56Speaker 2: Oscar for many moons and a lot of topics and whatnot. However,
- 19:00Speaker 2: there's two things we cannot be about Oscar. One, he
- 19:03Speaker 2: was a hell of a fighter in his prime and
- 19:04Speaker 2: he fought everyone. Secondly, business wise, he was the first
- 19:08Speaker 2: one to really kind of understand it. Didn't necessarily run
- 19:11Speaker 2: Golden Boy the best, but in terms of understanding the hey,
- 19:16Speaker 2: I can fight and be a promoter, let me get
- 19:19Speaker 2: involved with this. He got that pretty early on, and
- 19:23Speaker 2: it made a lot of sense. Guy believed when he
- 19:25Speaker 2: fought Floyd, Golden Boy was the promotional company that was
- 19:29Speaker 2: the one promoting it. So he got the bag on
- 19:31Speaker 2: both ends, which is in any business venture, if you
- 19:34Speaker 2: could do that, you're running it. So pak y'all doing
- 19:37Speaker 2: that at the end here makes a lot of sense.
- 19:39Speaker 2: But also, pak yall, for a guy that is what
- 19:43Speaker 2: for a lot of guys that are five to five
- 19:45Speaker 2: one hundred and twenty five pounds, that's the guy you're
- 19:49Speaker 2: gonna be like, Oh, if he's I want to be
- 19:51Speaker 2: under him. I want to because he did it. He
- 19:53Speaker 2: went from one hundred and twenty all the way up
- 19:54Speaker 2: to one forty seven. Hells, I think did he fight
- 19:58Speaker 2: at one fifty four? Uh? I know one for sure,
- 20:03Speaker 2: I know that. Yeah. But yeah, So those are the
- 20:09Speaker 2: things that as a young as a prospective fighter, I'm
- 20:13Speaker 2: seeing a guy that was my size and made all
- 20:16Speaker 2: the money he did and everything he accomplished. I'm like, oh,
- 20:19Speaker 2: I can sign with him. It makes a lot of sense.
- 20:21Speaker 2: But on the back end here, he's at the end
- 20:23Speaker 2: of his career. He's on a fight to fight basis,
- 20:26Speaker 2: it makes a lot of sense to fight, and I'll
- 20:28Speaker 2: promote your own because you get so much more benefits
- 20:31Speaker 2: from doing so.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Sure and say what you will about you know how
- 20:34Speaker 3: Oscar ran Golden Boy. Then my man crawled so that
- 20:37Speaker 3: you know, other fighters promoters could run. So he definitely,
- 20:42Speaker 3: uh definitely led the way. And here's the thing. I mean,
- 20:46Speaker 3: we we've never begrudged fighters, you know, trying to make
- 20:49Speaker 3: as much money as they can, because it's a dangerous sport.
- 20:51Speaker 3: It's only for the young. The only time I personally
- 20:54Speaker 3: begrudge them is if they decided to fight Jake Paul
- 20:56Speaker 3: for a payday and you know, ruined their their their status.
- 21:01Speaker 3: But that's neither here nor there. No, I mean, I
- 21:05Speaker 3: I wonder My thing is this, if, yes, if you
- 21:09Speaker 3: can be a promoter and have a lot of guys
- 21:10Speaker 3: that look up to you and want to be under you,
- 21:13Speaker 3: you don't really need the fight. I mean, I just
- 21:16Speaker 3: worry that, you know, he's gonna he looked, he looked good.
- 21:18Speaker 3: And we worry about guys getting high on their own supply,
- 21:20Speaker 3: like we said before, and not what that's happened many,
- 21:22Speaker 3: not at all. You know, Well, he.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Can't get more embarrassed when happened back, you know, there's
- 21:28Speaker 2: nothing more he can do. There's nothing, there's nothing else
- 21:32Speaker 2: that could happen worse than the J M M four fight.
- 21:36Speaker 5: What what happened to that fight? Jameson If you don't,
- 21:38Speaker 5: I don't remember this man. We knew that fight wasn't
- 21:42Speaker 5: going a distance. Both guys were going that fight was
- 21:45Speaker 5: going to hell one or another and one guy through
- 21:49Speaker 5: a check that missed and the other guy.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I didn't miss n night and that was it. And
- 21:55Speaker 2: we've never nothing that ever been the same, so as
- 21:58Speaker 2: our producers as but which to back you out looking
- 22:03Speaker 2: like so, yes, yes, that's what. So there's nothing else
- 22:08Speaker 2: that could replace that. There's nothing else that can be
- 22:12Speaker 2: as embarrassing in the ring altside of getting knocked out
- 22:15Speaker 2: of the ring. There's nothing else that many can do
- 22:17Speaker 2: in the ring that can be more embarrassing than that.
- 22:19Speaker 3: In my opinion, that's fair, that's fair to We've said
- 22:22Speaker 3: it before and I'm gonna say it every time. When
- 22:24Speaker 3: that clip comes up, all I hear in my head
- 22:25Speaker 3: is he's not getting up, Jim. He's not getting up,
- 22:27Speaker 3: getting up Jim. You know know, Hey, and you would
- 22:32Speaker 3: no shade. But man, you know, he he had an
- 22:34Speaker 3: amazing careers have to say that it destroyed his legacy.
- 22:37Speaker 3: He's not you know, I.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Thought he was about to put jam on his back.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Like That's the thing. That's the that's the funniest thing
- 22:43Speaker 2: about boxing that is so great is that at any moment,
- 22:47Speaker 2: the whole for chicken change like that. There's no there's
- 22:51Speaker 2: no one of reason. It's just boxing. And the way
- 22:53Speaker 2: that the way the fight was going, they both had
- 22:55Speaker 2: in their minds that they were willing to go all
- 22:59Speaker 2: out for whatever's gonna happen. And yes, the names are funny,
- 23:03Speaker 2: the clips are funny and all that, but both boxes
- 23:06Speaker 2: were okay with if we if I gotta go, I
- 23:09Speaker 2: gotta go. But I'm on my best foot forward And yeah,
- 23:12Speaker 2: that was a class night.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Yeah, there's what I've always said. I mean, there's no shame.
- 23:16Speaker 3: You go in the ring, you give it your roll,
- 23:18Speaker 3: you know. And Els and Ellen, I said, Manny's career
- 23:21Speaker 3: didn't end like the series finale of Dexter, where you know,
- 23:24Speaker 3: it ruined everything that came before. I hate that show.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Uh great, Well, you know, let's I'm excited to see,
- 23:33Speaker 3: we're still wondering if Manny's officially going to uh fight
- 23:36Speaker 3: Roly Romero in January. That's what it's looking like, but uh,
- 23:40Speaker 3: you know, no official word yet.
- 23:42Speaker 2: But you know, also like that he's because Roly right
- 23:48Speaker 2: now is known as the as the card filler guy,
- 23:52Speaker 2: Like he's a guy that you put in there when
- 23:54Speaker 2: a guy's getting ready for the next big fight. He's
- 23:56Speaker 2: not the big fight yet. But if he beats Pack yeall,
- 23:59Speaker 2: even though Pack Yeah alls old, it's a good opportunity
- 24:02Speaker 2: for him because he needs it. He needs a like
- 24:05Speaker 2: la Ron and Garcia one was whatever, I don't really whatever.
- 24:09Speaker 2: He beats Pakia, it's a good look for his resume
- 24:12Speaker 2: and his situation because then he can get a co
- 24:14Speaker 2: feature event being part of the car and I see
- 24:17Speaker 2: it happening.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't feel that beating Pacio gets you know. Well,
- 24:22Speaker 3: of course, some of course some boxing fans are going
- 24:24Speaker 3: to be like, oh, you beat up in an old man,
- 24:25Speaker 3: you're not good blah. But I think Paccio, for most people,
- 24:29Speaker 3: especially the way you look coming back last fight, that's
- 24:31Speaker 3: still a big, big deal. Doesn't matter that he's an
- 24:34Speaker 3: old man now. Uh, you know, he's beating pacya still
- 24:39Speaker 3: is going to carry a lot of weight for.
- 24:41Speaker 2: A lot of a lot of cash, a lot of cash.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Absolutely, absolutely, So let's see what happens, uh, you know,
- 24:48Speaker 3: in the beginning of next year. So next up, what
- 24:50Speaker 3: we got here, our boy Dana White, his ZUFA Boxing
- 24:57Speaker 3: has signed a deal with Paramount Plus, where the UFC
- 24:59Speaker 3: was already going. Kind of no brainer for him. You know,
- 25:02Speaker 3: he already said he'd been trying to get into boxing.
- 25:04Speaker 3: He was trying to start the y zoofa boxing back.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I think it was the McGregor Mayweather fight. I don't
- 25:10Speaker 3: remember he talked about it. Yeah, nothing came out of it.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Now Canella Crawford's officially in the boxing scene. You know,
- 25:18Speaker 3: I think I don't have a lot to say about
- 25:20Speaker 3: being and White in general right now, because I think
- 25:22Speaker 3: we have material for a full episode, you know, very
- 25:24Speaker 3: very soon. About enrolled in boxing, Well that's gonna look
- 25:27Speaker 3: like But yeah, I mean, at the end of the day,
- 25:30Speaker 3: I've always said I love watching fights. I'll put on,
- 25:34Speaker 3: you know, any random boxer because I just love the
- 25:36Speaker 3: sport so much. If you know, Dana WIT's involved, not
- 25:40Speaker 3: my favorite, but whatever, you know, I just want more
- 25:42Speaker 3: fights accessible, easily accessible at any given time. So how
- 25:46Speaker 3: do you feel about Dana White bringing that into paramount
- 25:48Speaker 3: alongside DFC.
- 25:50Speaker 2: So I think Dana White means well, I actually do.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I think he means well. I think he actually wants
- 25:55Speaker 2: to put on as many fights as possible. He's tried
- 25:59Speaker 2: with the Slap Box, with the Slap League, He's tried
- 26:01Speaker 2: with I think Baring of the Bob, He's tried a
- 26:03Speaker 2: lot of different things, So I think he means well.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I don't think his intentions are bad. I think he's
- 26:08Speaker 2: he wants to put as many matches on as possible.
- 26:11Speaker 2: The one thing I will give the UFC credit for,
- 26:14Speaker 2: even though it's not my particular cup of tea, and
- 26:17Speaker 2: that there's a lot of fights and a lot of
- 26:19Speaker 2: the guys are fighting a lot of the guys, which
- 26:21Speaker 2: is really good. What you want your sport to have
- 26:24Speaker 2: is dudes fighting dudes, or the contend to fight contenders.
- 26:27Speaker 2: You don't want cherry picking, you don't want random stuff.
- 26:30Speaker 2: You want guys fighting guys, and he gets after UFC.
- 26:33Speaker 2: But also they fight pretty consistently, and that's something that
- 26:37Speaker 2: Box has had to issue with. So having a home
- 26:39Speaker 2: and you can put fights on that's pretty what somewhat accessible.
- 26:44Speaker 2: I think there's a huge win. And also he's in
- 26:48Speaker 2: he's in partnership and collaboration with Turkey and all the
- 26:51Speaker 2: other powers that beat So I think it's a good thing.
- 26:54Speaker 2: We'll see how it all pans out, because one thing
- 26:57Speaker 2: getting the deal done is another thing fulfilling whatever's acts
- 27:02Speaker 2: of the deal. That's what I'm curious about. What once
- 27:04Speaker 2: the Once the deal is in action, then what is
- 27:08Speaker 2: the What do you need to do to market those flights?
- 27:10Speaker 2: How of the fights can we market it? That's where
- 27:12Speaker 2: I'm at because getting a deal done for contents not
- 27:14Speaker 2: the biggest thing in the world, But how do they
- 27:17Speaker 2: market it? How do we sell unknown fighters to the public?
- 27:21Speaker 2: And those are all things I'm kind of curious on.
- 27:23Speaker 2: But like for right now, I'm like you waiting ce Mode.
- 27:25Speaker 2: But it's a good I think it's a good thing
- 27:27Speaker 2: because boxing doesn't didn't have home up until this, So
- 27:31Speaker 2: that's a good thing, right. My only thing that kind
- 27:34Speaker 2: of and it could be a minded complaint. It's not
- 27:36Speaker 2: even a complaint. It's more just like a bummer of it.
- 27:38Speaker 3: It's just that the big news was UFC huge multi
- 27:43Speaker 3: billion dollar deal with Paramount Plus, and I guess we'll
- 27:46Speaker 3: add boxing into the mix. It's like a little bonus,
- 27:48Speaker 3: you know. It's like get a little toy at the
- 27:51Speaker 3: bottom of the cereal box kind of a thing. And
- 27:55Speaker 3: I don't know, it just kind of makes it buzz
- 27:56Speaker 3: me out that boxing is boxing's you know, status is
- 27:59Speaker 3: just so so lowered next to UFC.
- 28:02Speaker 2: If CBS can put on the Big Three Basketball on weekends,
- 28:05Speaker 2: they can put on boxing on the weekends. And that's
- 28:07Speaker 2: no disrespect to any of the former NBA players and
- 28:10Speaker 2: basketball players that are playing in that league. But you
- 28:13Speaker 2: can have boxing on the weekends in them time plots
- 28:16Speaker 2: as well in the summer. So I think there's an
- 28:18Speaker 2: avenue in a way to make things work. But a
- 28:21Speaker 2: couple of things boxers gotta do. They part. The boxers
- 28:24Speaker 2: are not doing a good enough part of marketing themselves.
- 28:28Speaker 2: It's one thing to win in the ring, but these
- 28:29Speaker 2: guys are kind of boring now. And I mean, I
- 28:32Speaker 2: don't want you being Adrian Browner. I don't want you
- 28:33Speaker 2: to be in that. But we don't have nobody being exciting.
- 28:36Speaker 2: There's there's no there's not a whole lot of energy.
- 28:39Speaker 2: We're we're missing that. Now. There's a couple of guys
- 28:41Speaker 2: that have some, but we're missing a lot of umph
- 28:45Speaker 2: as a lot of our boxes, and we need somebody
- 28:48Speaker 2: that people want to see right now. Just feel like
- 28:51Speaker 2: guys are all about making a bag and then disappearing.
- 28:53Speaker 2: We need guys that want the limelight, that are that
- 28:57Speaker 2: bring energy to a table. And until that happen, we're
- 29:00Speaker 2: gonna have keep on having the same discussions.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Sure, and I think I feel this is my opinion.
- 29:05Speaker 3: I think there are a lot of guys out there
- 29:06Speaker 3: that are just not as many avenues.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Now.
- 29:08Speaker 3: We've talked before about how you know, we don't see
- 29:10Speaker 3: the guys that are seven or no at three pm
- 29:12Speaker 3: on cards. You know, the way to see that most
- 29:16Speaker 3: recently was a fight on ESPN, But you sign up
- 29:19Speaker 3: for ESPN plus the stream the early stuff, and now
- 29:22Speaker 3: that's gone. So you know, I we talked last episode
- 29:26Speaker 3: about you know, guys on overtime boxing. You know, sure
- 29:29Speaker 3: it's broadcast on his own. You know, they seem to
- 29:32Speaker 3: have some a very good production, but you know, the
- 29:36Speaker 3: regular lay person doesn't know about that. I had to
- 29:39Speaker 3: find them through Instagram randomly. They even got a good
- 29:42Speaker 3: online social media presence. They just to do a lot
- 29:44Speaker 3: of memes, a lot of funny videos, all that stuff.
- 29:46Speaker 3: They're good at what they do. And when the fighters
- 29:50Speaker 3: that I saw a few weeks ago, you know, they're hungry,
- 29:52Speaker 3: they look like killers. You know, they were tough, they
- 29:54Speaker 3: were exciting. But you got to tell people find overtime
- 29:59Speaker 3: on YouTube streaming, you know whatever, if you have the zone,
- 30:03Speaker 3: find that if you if you do have that, you know,
- 30:06Speaker 3: find over time. Blah blah blah. So I think it's
- 30:08Speaker 3: just it's just the ability to get access to things
- 30:11Speaker 3: now that that's really hurting the up and coming guys.
- 30:14Speaker 3: I think. I think there's a lot of dudes who
- 30:17Speaker 3: and ladies who could make it big. They're just kind
- 30:21Speaker 3: of doing their best on TikTok and Instagram, you know.
- 30:23Speaker 3: And that's that's great, that's used. That's that's necessary. But
- 30:27Speaker 3: that that does not a superstar make unless you're you know,
- 30:30Speaker 3: a singer, like a musician who who has something go viral.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Right, No, I agree hundred percent. And as we need more,
- 30:39Speaker 2: we need more stars and need guys fight more. But
- 30:42Speaker 2: being on Paramount Plus, which is a CBS app in
- 30:45Speaker 2: a sense, is the start, but we need guys that
- 30:48Speaker 2: are allowed, like we need productive loud, not unknowing loud,
- 30:51Speaker 2: but we need productive loud or where people know who
- 30:54Speaker 2: you are, but you're respectful be loud. So hopefully that
- 30:58Speaker 2: comes up soon and later. But anything that puts more
- 31:01Speaker 2: fights on.
- 31:02Speaker 3: TV on for a great I mean, you know, I'm
- 31:06Speaker 3: not a big fan of Dana White and his way
- 31:11Speaker 3: of doing business. And like I said, we can talk
- 31:12Speaker 3: about more about that in a future episode. But at
- 31:15Speaker 3: the end of the day, you know, we're dealing with it.
- 31:17Speaker 3: We were dealing with talking about a sport that we love.
- 31:18Speaker 3: We're working class guys doing this working class podcast about
- 31:21Speaker 3: this this sport that we're super passionate about. But this
- 31:25Speaker 3: is not something that you know, this is sport with
- 31:28Speaker 3: money from the Saudis, from people that have been screwing
- 31:31Speaker 3: over fighters for a long time, not the best people.
- 31:33Speaker 3: I mean, we're kind of there's no like, I don't know,
- 31:35Speaker 3: like a small batch, you know, locally owned boxing promotion
- 31:41Speaker 3: that we can build up. It's always going to be
- 31:43Speaker 3: somebody is attached to it that's not a great guy,
- 31:46Speaker 3: doesn't have a great history, and it sucks. You know,
- 31:48Speaker 3: we're living in a world where ten thousand brands are
- 31:50Speaker 3: owned by three or four corporations, and Boxing is not
- 31:53Speaker 3: immune to that. Nothing is immune to that anymore, you know.
- 31:56Speaker 2: And this is all their fault too, that's the thing.
- 31:58Speaker 2: It's got all been avoided. We've had a lack of
- 32:01Speaker 2: organization at the top for a very long time. For
- 32:04Speaker 2: the longest time, the biggest promotion companies were in beef
- 32:07Speaker 2: with each other instead of in collaboration with each other.
- 32:11Speaker 2: If the heads at the top could have all came
- 32:13Speaker 2: together and said, hey, this is how we're going to
- 32:15Speaker 2: do businesses, how we're going to do things, it would
- 32:17Speaker 2: have been we've been a lot better off, a whole
- 32:19Speaker 2: lot better off. But there was so much infighting. There
- 32:22Speaker 2: was so much beef, There was so much distraction amongst
- 32:26Speaker 2: other things. And here we are because UFC, so they're credit.
- 32:31Speaker 2: They don't have those issues at the top. There's not
- 32:33Speaker 2: a lot of dissension. They got other issues, but their
- 32:36Speaker 2: issues aren't about the organization and the structure. Boxing lacks
- 32:40Speaker 2: structure because it felt like one promotion company did this thing,
- 32:44Speaker 2: one one did that thing, other ones below it did
- 32:47Speaker 2: their own thing, and no one was on the same page,
- 32:49Speaker 2: which it all ended up Heart of the Sports basically
- 32:52Speaker 2: a thousand different paper cuts which ended to what we
- 32:55Speaker 2: have now. So hopefully it gets better, but we still
- 32:58Speaker 2: have some holes to film, sure.
- 33:00Speaker 3: And it's the thing that I like the idea of
- 33:03Speaker 3: in boxing is, yeah, there's a lot of different promotional companies,
- 33:05Speaker 3: a lot of guys coming in like Oscar doing this
- 33:07Speaker 3: where yeah, they should have been collaborating more and kind
- 33:10Speaker 3: of lifting up the industry so that they're The thing
- 33:13Speaker 3: I don't like so much is you know about UFC
- 33:15Speaker 3: as this one guy at the top, what he says
- 33:17Speaker 3: goes and it kind of every fighter has to fall
- 33:19Speaker 3: in light. You know, there's a lot of opportunities to
- 33:21Speaker 3: make a name Canelo. Guys that Canelo can choose their
- 33:23Speaker 3: own fighters or choose their opponents rather you end up
- 33:28Speaker 3: with a big fight changes the life, like but Crawford type,
- 33:30Speaker 3: he can write his own ticket. You know, that's the
- 33:32Speaker 3: thing that boxing had always had that UFC doesn't right now,
- 33:37Speaker 3: and it's looking like boxing is having that opportunity less
- 33:40Speaker 3: and less. But again, we can just go back to
- 33:43Speaker 3: the same conversation of it's because guys aren't fighting enough
- 33:46Speaker 3: and aren't making a name for themselves. So it's like
- 33:48Speaker 3: it's a chicken or the egg thing. You know, are
- 33:50Speaker 3: you are you not able to make a name for
- 33:52Speaker 3: yourself because you're not fighting as often? Or do you
- 33:55Speaker 3: have less opportunities to get your name out there because
- 33:57Speaker 3: there's places to find boxing? I mean, my god, uh
- 34:00Speaker 3: you know we're here, were still and I'm gonna say
- 34:03Speaker 3: it every damn episode until it happens. Where the hell
- 34:05Speaker 3: is Top Rank box is gonna be shown? God damn yeah.
- 34:09Speaker 2: And that's the thing. Also, who takes over for Bob
- 34:11Speaker 2: Aaron once his time comes? Why there's no successor why
- 34:16Speaker 2: you know we talk about Golden Boy and uh PBC
- 34:20Speaker 2: and all these other companies, but what happens with Top
- 34:23Speaker 2: Rank and Bob Aram after his day comes?
- 34:26Speaker 3: Yeah? What in the.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 34:28Speaker 5: Is he his?
- 34:29Speaker 3: They always you know, make a big deal about his
- 34:31Speaker 3: birthday like he's over ninety now right right around there?
- 34:34Speaker 2: Yeah him and yeah, yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Here's here's my prediction on Bob Aaron is that nobody's
- 34:41Speaker 3: making uh, nobody's playing plans for the future because folks
- 34:45Speaker 3: like that just kind of I don't know, if they
- 34:47Speaker 3: money makes you assume they're going to be around forever.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Maybe Bob Aaron really believes that he's going to be
- 34:51Speaker 3: two hundred years old, and they don't think about the future.
- 34:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Binds me of Batman when the Joker shoots at Card
- 35:02Speaker 3: and says, think about the future. Oh wow, and none
- 35:05Speaker 3: of these people. I just thought that. I just rewatched
- 35:07Speaker 3: that a couple of weeks ago, so I hear that
- 35:09Speaker 3: in my head. But no, I honestly, like, honestly speaking,
- 35:11Speaker 3: you know, I think a lot of people at the top,
- 35:13Speaker 3: including our politicians, you know, not to get too too
- 35:16Speaker 3: into that. People just kind of sit there and ride
- 35:18Speaker 3: the way because they got this history legacy and they
- 35:21Speaker 3: don't think about who's going to take over once, you know,
- 35:24Speaker 3: our ninety year olds are up and gone. So true anyway, Okay,
- 35:31Speaker 3: let's see next up. We got here, all right. Millions
- 35:34Speaker 3: dot co an official partner of nineteen media group, our
- 35:37Speaker 3: network that is gracious enough to have us on or sorry,
- 35:41Speaker 3: have me on even back when I didn't know what
- 35:43Speaker 3: the hell I was doing early on. But millions dot
- 35:46Speaker 3: co is a platform that hosts, you know, podcasts, interviews
- 35:50Speaker 3: were on there, and they're actually having a pay per
- 35:52Speaker 3: view event on October eighteenth, featuring Danny Garcia. He's winding
- 35:57Speaker 3: down his career. It's the promotions says that he's saying
- 36:00Speaker 3: goodbye to Brooklyn Denny. Garcia has been very inactive in
- 36:04Speaker 3: the last like five years, only fought a handful of times.
- 36:07Speaker 3: You know, Bip, just want to see how you feel
- 36:10Speaker 3: about this upcoming paper U stream on this platform.
- 36:13Speaker 2: It's very interesting. You know, Danny Garcia had a hell
- 36:15Speaker 2: of a career for what his skill set and his
- 36:18Speaker 2: overall talents are like, you know, for how he came
- 36:22Speaker 2: up his big breakthrough versus American and where he took
- 36:25Speaker 2: that and rode with it. Hell of a career. I
- 36:28Speaker 2: don't know if he's a boxing Hall of Famer. I
- 36:30Speaker 2: don't know if it's that kind of career, but he's
- 36:33Speaker 2: predamn good. Like he's very very good. But yeah, hell
- 36:37Speaker 2: of a hell career, a lot of good fights, a
- 36:39Speaker 2: lot of big fights. He's also a guy that made
- 36:41Speaker 2: a lot of money. When you make a lot of money,
- 36:43Speaker 2: you're not as active like He's probably one of the
- 36:45Speaker 2: poster children for hey, I made a lot of money.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I used to fight a couple of times a year,
- 36:50Speaker 2: and not only fighting once over eighteen months, which hey,
- 36:52Speaker 2: I get it. And also here's the thing too, I
- 36:55Speaker 2: don't know how his body's reacting to fights, so his
- 36:58Speaker 2: body made take six want us to recover, I don't
- 37:01Speaker 2: Those are questions I don't know. I'd love to talk
- 37:03Speaker 2: to him about those things, because it's interesting when guys
- 37:06Speaker 2: are trying to make their name, they're more active, but
- 37:08Speaker 2: once he hit to a certain age, they may take
- 37:10Speaker 2: more time to recover. So those are all things we
- 37:11Speaker 2: have to kind of factor in as well. But at
- 37:14Speaker 2: the same time, he made a lot of good money
- 37:16Speaker 2: under PBC. He was had a lot. He was headlining
- 37:18Speaker 2: a lot of those East Coast fights, whether they're in
- 37:20Speaker 2: Brooklyn or Masis Square Garden, Philly. He was headlining a
- 37:25Speaker 2: lot of those big, big fight weekends on PVC, was
- 37:28Speaker 2: pumping money into the sport. So I know he did
- 37:31Speaker 2: well financially, did very well in the ring as well.
- 37:34Speaker 2: But yeah, very very good fighter. It's funny how I
- 37:38Speaker 2: think it was twenty twelve when he fought con and
- 37:40Speaker 2: then thirteen years later he's at the other end of
- 37:43Speaker 2: his career. It all makes sense. But it's time, you know,
- 37:46Speaker 2: it's we We're so accustomed to the Floyds and the
- 37:49Speaker 2: Crawfords and the Pacialls fighting so long. The normal time
- 37:53Speaker 2: for a Boxtions once the mid thirties come around, that's
- 37:56Speaker 2: pretty much about it. Like that's it. That's normally a career,
- 37:59Speaker 2: which what's just fine.
- 38:01Speaker 3: I mean, once the mid thirties come around for us,
- 38:04Speaker 3: just as regular dudes, you know, our knees don't work
- 38:06Speaker 3: the same. You know. I still remember when our producer
- 38:10Speaker 3: Jubarie Davis, who's old as hell, like way older than us,
- 38:12Speaker 3: like he's ancient, probably like in his mid forties, he
- 38:16Speaker 3: told me, when you know what, recovery time is gonna double,
- 38:18Speaker 3: And man, was he right. It's not like I didn't
- 38:21Speaker 3: believe him, but you believe it, but you don't really
- 38:24Speaker 3: understand it until it happens, you know. And I'm talking
- 38:27Speaker 3: about recovery time for the gym, for hangovers, for anything,
- 38:30Speaker 3: you know, for a long night, oh everything, everything. So
- 38:33Speaker 3: you know, yeah, it's got just my admiration for these
- 38:36Speaker 3: guys who are still fighting mid thirties but canelo you know,
- 38:39Speaker 3: close to forty. It's it's just amazing the fact what
- 38:42Speaker 3: they can do. And you know, I really think I
- 38:46Speaker 3: think and I'll include myself because I'm a snarky little
- 38:49Speaker 3: bit sometimes. You know, we can kind of clown fighters
- 38:52Speaker 3: for not looking as good in the ring as they
- 38:54Speaker 3: get older, maybe you getting dropped this and that. But
- 38:57Speaker 3: at the end of the day, no matter what, I
- 38:59Speaker 3: still respect the hell out of anybody that gets in
- 39:01Speaker 3: that ring period, you know. Yeah, And you can't just
- 39:05Speaker 3: do it. You know, you don't see guys whether they're
- 39:09Speaker 3: you know, over the hill, whether their skills are kind
- 39:11Speaker 3: of diminished over the years. I don't know. You still
- 39:14Speaker 3: don't see guys coming in there like fat, hungover, you know,
- 39:18Speaker 3: into that ring. They're still training as hard as they can.
- 39:20Speaker 3: So yeah, I mean, you know, I I think it's
- 39:24Speaker 3: cool that Danny Garcia wants to cap his career with
- 39:26Speaker 3: a big fight on this platform. Do I think it's necessary.
- 39:30Speaker 3: I mean, you can't just kind of like say thanks
- 39:32Speaker 3: for the memories and walk off. You know, we don't
- 39:34Speaker 3: want anybody to get hurt. I just hope that, you know,
- 39:37Speaker 3: at the end of the day, it comes back to
- 39:39Speaker 3: hope guys aren't too high on their own supply to
- 39:41Speaker 3: get like really injured because it's a big deal and
- 39:46Speaker 3: being as inactive I don't know that life, of course,
- 39:49Speaker 3: you know, but I can't imagine that no matter how
- 39:53Speaker 3: hard you work out in the gym for two years,
- 39:56Speaker 3: being out of the ring makes a big difference. It's
- 39:59Speaker 3: not the same thing, you know what I mean, Like,
- 40:01Speaker 3: if you're not at the rink twice a year, I
- 40:02Speaker 3: feel like he can't can't possibly be the same thing.
- 40:05Speaker 3: I don't care if you're working out seven days a week,
- 40:07Speaker 3: you know, four hours a day.
- 40:09Speaker 2: I three hundred percent with you. That's something where it's
- 40:12Speaker 2: a tall task. Man, it's a very tall task. With
- 40:15Speaker 2: that being said, he's had a hell of a career
- 40:18Speaker 2: from before the con fight to now. Man, Yeah, it's
- 40:24Speaker 2: a hell of a ride for a guy that done.
- 40:26Speaker 2: He has a great left hook, but when you look
- 40:28Speaker 2: at him, he's not like an overly he's not like
- 40:31Speaker 2: a big power guy. He's not an overly fast guy.
- 40:34Speaker 2: But he's a hell of a boxer for what his
- 40:36Speaker 2: skill said. Oh and it actually is so nah, kudos
- 40:40Speaker 2: to him from being ended on his terms, not getting retired.
- 40:43Speaker 2: You know, some guys get retired. He's going on his terms.
- 40:46Speaker 2: That's that's pretty cool.
- 40:48Speaker 3: And you know, on that note, since we're bringing up
- 40:50Speaker 3: a mere con you know, he also can be sort
- 40:52Speaker 3: of a punchline and uh, you know, it does kind
- 40:55Speaker 3: of suck that you're on every single Canelo fight reel
- 40:59Speaker 3: is getting slept or sorry, that's up. His eyes were
- 41:03Speaker 3: open when he hit that canvas.
- 41:05Speaker 2: I was actually at that fight, and yeah, yeah, I
- 41:09Speaker 2: was at that fight. And yeah, the thing is, it's
- 41:12Speaker 2: like any boxing fight, you can kind of tell, all right,
- 41:16Speaker 2: the favorites about to close the show. Here he's just
- 41:18Speaker 2: timing everything. He's timing everything, and then once it happened,
- 41:21Speaker 2: it was like, oh, yeah, this is over. But yeah, yeah,
- 41:27Speaker 2: Kn's defense and lack of a jaw pause is man
- 41:33Speaker 2: one of the biggest wit IFFs because if he would
- 41:36Speaker 2: have had any kind of defense and if he was
- 41:38Speaker 2: able to the funniest thing about the con the con
- 41:42Speaker 2: Garcia fight is this, if he wins that fight, he
- 41:45Speaker 2: fights Floyd. At the time, that's what people wanted to see.
- 41:48Speaker 2: That was in big demand. Con had the people from overseas,
- 41:51Speaker 2: a huge fan base overseas, another big money fight. But
- 41:55Speaker 2: when that didn't happen, he never really recovered from that.
- 41:59Speaker 2: And yeah, the Canelo fight was what it was, and
- 42:02Speaker 2: then that was all she wrote.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Sure, and that all of that is true and fair.
- 42:06Speaker 3: What I was actually getting on is that, you know
- 42:08Speaker 3: a Mirka still deserve respect. You know he I just
- 42:10Speaker 3: looked it up. Thirty four wins, six losses. You know,
- 42:12Speaker 3: he's had a good career and you know he's he's
- 42:14Speaker 3: a big name in British boxing, the pick name in
- 42:16Speaker 3: in uh Southeast Asian boxing. You know, the man, like
- 42:20Speaker 3: I said, deserve respect, and yeah, like I still kind
- 42:23Speaker 3: of like it's more just like, let's say this if
- 42:27Speaker 3: I got my ass kicked on even just like somebody
- 42:30Speaker 3: like filming it out on the street and putting it
- 42:32Speaker 3: on Instagram, And that just kept coming up over and
- 42:34Speaker 3: over and over, you know, every every every twice a year,
- 42:37Speaker 3: you know, they show a little highlight of me getting
- 42:39Speaker 3: my ass slept and put down on the sidewalk. That
- 42:42Speaker 3: would suck. That's gonna suck, you know that that and
- 42:46Speaker 3: you know that is an amazing knockout from Canelo when
- 42:49Speaker 3: when con hit the hit the canvas, so he.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Knocked the hell out. That's the issue. That's a knockout,
- 42:54Speaker 2: so white.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Yeah, but what was that? What was the via butt?
- 42:56Speaker 3: That fight?
- 42:57Speaker 2: Like it was so I knew what was gonna happen,
- 43:01Speaker 2: but it was kind of uneasy after around like four,
- 43:03Speaker 2: like people kind of felt, you know, like at the time,
- 43:06Speaker 2: I probably think Colin fight went the fight early on,
- 43:08Speaker 2: and he'd be honest with you. However, again, when you
- 43:11Speaker 2: watch the fighter's like, okay, well, well you see what's going.
- 43:14Speaker 2: You see what's happening. Canelo wasn't phasing all by anything
- 43:17Speaker 2: Colin was doing. It was that Colin more active, doing
- 43:20Speaker 2: the typical American stuff, more active speed, athletic system, all
- 43:24Speaker 2: that showing leading, you know, leading like he does. And
- 43:28Speaker 2: then you know, Canal was just timing and everything and
- 43:31Speaker 2: then all she wrote and then it went like oh
- 43:34Speaker 2: and then and that was when T Mobile first opened,
- 43:37Speaker 2: so it was like, I want to say, probably the
- 43:39Speaker 2: first big fight at that arena because yeah, it was
- 43:44Speaker 2: right around that time. So yeah, but you know, and
- 43:46Speaker 2: that's that's why I knew Canelo is really that guy,
- 43:50Speaker 2: because he brought everybody out. Everybody named Mama was out,
- 43:53Speaker 2: like from here overseas casual fans. He brought them all out,
- 43:58Speaker 2: and I mean all the all the beautiful Mexican women
- 44:03Speaker 2: and other Spanic women. He brought them out. And I
- 44:06Speaker 2: mean if you if you partake in Mexican and other
- 44:12Speaker 2: Hispanic and Latin women, that was the place to be
- 44:14Speaker 2: for that weekend. They were all out and they were
- 44:16Speaker 2: dressed to impress. They were out. So yeah, for those
- 44:19Speaker 2: who enjoy looking at beautiful women. I don't know how
- 44:24Speaker 2: many more fights Cano has left in the States, but
- 44:27Speaker 2: I do advise you, if possible, be in the city
- 44:29Speaker 2: wherever he's fighting at in the States going forward.
- 44:33Speaker 3: Man, on that note, you know, just fore, I love
- 44:35Speaker 3: going to like concerts, Mexican concerts and just even Phoenix
- 44:39Speaker 3: and the ladies, you know, a popular musician and ladies
- 44:42Speaker 3: come out dressed to impress.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Man.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's always a night to remember. And it's
- 44:46Speaker 3: not just for you know, the show on stage. You know,
- 44:49Speaker 3: the ladies out there. It is, it is. It is
- 44:53Speaker 3: a sight to see. But two Santejano concerts were always
- 44:56Speaker 3: the spot as well. Okay, okay, yeah, yeah, so yeah,
- 45:00Speaker 3: anything like that. Man, you're you're right now. It's we're
- 45:02Speaker 3: not gonna just lose an amazing fighter. When we lose Canelo,
- 45:05Speaker 3: we're gonna lose the draw that he brings in. But yeah, anyway,
- 45:09Speaker 3: just kind of bring it all back. Actually, I can't
- 45:13Speaker 3: believe that I didn't remember this because I read this
- 45:16Speaker 3: many times and again it's probably just kind of goes
- 45:19Speaker 3: to show that we don't, you know, just kind of
- 45:22Speaker 3: don't give a mere con the respect to deserve. He's
- 45:24Speaker 3: the only dude to have fought both Canelo and Bud Crawford,
- 45:27Speaker 3: Like he fought them both.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Did you know that? Yeah, yeah, that's that's a good call,
- 45:33Speaker 2: great call. Wow.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Yeah, So he was in the ring with both of them,
- 45:37Speaker 3: and you know, he he went up by classes to
- 45:39Speaker 3: fight Canelo and you know, lost the boat. But yeah,
- 45:43Speaker 3: you know he got in the ring with two of
- 45:45Speaker 3: the best fighters of their generation you know these days,
- 45:48Speaker 3: so that that takes a lot. And even if he
- 45:50Speaker 3: didn't pull out the w.
- 45:52Speaker 2: No respect to him.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Again, you know, I don't want to be super snarky
- 45:55Speaker 3: with the guy because he takes it in good stride.
- 45:59Speaker 3: You know, he makes jokes about it. I think there's
- 46:00Speaker 3: something I might have said this before. Somebody said he
- 46:02Speaker 3: was using like form and enhancing drugs and he said,
- 46:05Speaker 3: if I took PDS, I would have been a better fighter.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, yeah, yeah.
- 46:12Speaker 3: But anyway, we started this part of the segment talking
- 46:15Speaker 3: about Tanny Garcia versus Danny Gonzales. But just a reminder
- 46:18Speaker 3: of October eighteenth on millions dot co pay per view
- 46:21Speaker 3: forty bucks. Shout out to Millions. You know, we upload
- 46:23Speaker 3: our show there, they make clips for us, you know,
- 46:25Speaker 3: help us out on social media. Official partner of nineteen
- 46:28Speaker 3: Media Group. So yeah, check it out if you can.
- 46:31Speaker 3: And you know, shout out to Today Garcia. So next up,
- 46:36Speaker 3: another thing I'm very excited about is our recurring segment
- 46:39Speaker 3: called pop Pugilism, in which we discuss a movie, TV show,
- 46:43Speaker 3: or documentary about boxing. And I'm thrilled today to announce
- 46:46Speaker 3: that this segment is brought to you by another sponsor,
- 46:49Speaker 3: our friends from the Bad Movies, Worst People Podcast, big
- 46:53Speaker 3: supporters of the show. Not only that they've been kind
- 46:55Speaker 3: enough to send us a custom ad. So let's roll
- 46:57Speaker 3: the clip, guys. I got a new philosophy, right. Life
- 47:01Speaker 3: is a lot like a bad movie. It can suck,
- 47:03Speaker 3: but if you get together with friends and you drink,
- 47:06Speaker 3: you can at least have a good time while the
- 47:07Speaker 3: movie sucks. What about other things? Can you do other things?
- 47:11Speaker 3: You can have any sort of caveat you want. But
- 47:14Speaker 3: I mean, I just more mean do you guys want
- 47:15Speaker 3: to get together and just watch bad movies and make
- 47:17Speaker 3: fun of them.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 47:18Speaker 3: I do that anyway by myself. Might as well doing together. Ooh,
- 47:22Speaker 3: I'll get severe bullets. I think we can start a podcast, guys,
- 47:26Speaker 3: I think we should. I have a great name for it,
- 47:28Speaker 3: Bad Movies Worse People, and you'll be able to find
- 47:31Speaker 3: it anywhere you can get podcasts or you can go
- 47:33Speaker 3: to Badmovies Worse People dot com.
- 47:35Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 47:36Speaker 3: And you can tell there's no actors on this podcast,
- 47:38Speaker 3: like I mean, it's really painfully clear that the acting
- 47:41Speaker 3: is not where we shine. Yes, it's very clear, very clear.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Thanks guys. These guys have been big supporters of our
- 47:48Speaker 3: show and we love them here. So you know, shout
- 47:50Speaker 3: out to Bad Movies Worse People. Now today we are
- 47:54Speaker 3: talking about Creed from twenty fifteen. Ten year of this
- 48:00Speaker 3: movie is coming up. It was out in November, and
- 48:02Speaker 3: I've got here the exclusive Steal book with Creed one
- 48:06Speaker 3: and Creed two. If you haven't checked this out on YouTube,
- 48:08Speaker 3: definitely do that. You know a little import here Now,
- 48:12Speaker 3: this movie probably doesn't need a lot of introduction. It's
- 48:16Speaker 3: essentially Rocky seven. It was directed by Ryan Coogler, who
- 48:21Speaker 3: has been absolutely crushing it in the last decade and
- 48:25Speaker 3: especially this year. If y'all haven't seen Sinners, it's ranked
- 48:28Speaker 3: my number one movie of the year so far. A
- 48:31Speaker 3: lot of things have come real close to knocking it
- 48:34Speaker 3: down from the spot, but it hasn't happened yet. As
- 48:36Speaker 3: of October twenty twenty five, Sinners is still the number
- 48:38Speaker 3: one and I have I can say so much about
- 48:43Speaker 3: the movie. I could have done a whole episode just
- 48:45Speaker 3: talking about Creed because it is my favorite boxing movie.
- 48:48Speaker 2: It is.
- 48:49Speaker 3: This is top tier. It's It's not just a great
- 48:52Speaker 3: boxing movie. It is a great movie as far as
- 48:54Speaker 3: I'm concerned. And I'm gonna go off on this movie
- 48:58Speaker 3: a lot. So James and I just want to you.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Have you seen it? Did you see what it came out?
- 49:02Speaker 3: What are your thoughts on this movie and in its
- 49:05Speaker 3: place in the Rocky franchise?
- 49:07Speaker 2: Saw it in the theaters, saw it recently, And like
- 49:13Speaker 2: anything else, if you put the money and energy behind
- 49:16Speaker 2: something that's really good, it will have good numbers, it
- 49:19Speaker 2: will have a good showing. You can tell some We've
- 49:22Speaker 2: talked about a lot of boxing movies over the last
- 49:24Speaker 2: year or so, on this show. This is the one
- 49:28Speaker 2: that had all the emphasis behind it, had the money,
- 49:32Speaker 2: had star power, had resources, had a great storyline, had
- 49:36Speaker 2: great acting, had all the things that hey, man, if
- 49:40Speaker 2: you put it, they will come. And to be honest
- 49:43Speaker 2: with you, man, we need more of this. This is
- 49:47Speaker 2: what we need. I'm glad you actually chose this movie
- 49:50Speaker 2: because this actually makes boxing look dope, not just the
- 49:53Speaker 2: stuff in the ring, but the storytelling of boxers. We've
- 49:57Speaker 2: gotten away from knowing where guys came from in boxing.
- 50:02Speaker 2: We've gotten away from the struggle stories of boxers. We've
- 50:07Speaker 2: gotten way away from it where we don't tell the
- 50:10Speaker 2: story of how they got to this point. All that
- 50:15Speaker 2: movie had everything that we grew up on when it
- 50:18Speaker 2: came to boxing. So to me, Creed is an amazing film.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Get that way till the end of the segment. Is
- 50:24Speaker 2: a four out of four in a lot of ways.
- 50:26Speaker 2: If I give it four plus, I would, But no,
- 50:29Speaker 2: that movie is if I gave somebody that's a casual
- 50:33Speaker 2: person that doesn't really watch boxing, I would give them
- 50:36Speaker 2: that movie to give them more emphasis on learning more
- 50:40Speaker 2: about the sport, learning researching more. Even though Rock is
- 50:44Speaker 2: a fictional character and Creed is technically a fictional character.
- 50:48Speaker 2: The movie itself would have a non boxing fan doing
- 50:52Speaker 2: more research and asking more questions about the sport.
- 50:57Speaker 3: Yeah, man, one hundred percent agree. So my thing with
- 51:00Speaker 3: this movie, you know, I well just really creaking case.
- 51:03Speaker 3: Like I said, it doesn't need a lot of introduction,
- 51:05Speaker 3: but it is. In the Rocky franchise, Michael B. Jordan
- 51:09Speaker 3: plays a Donnis Creed, Apollo Crete's son from an affair
- 51:13Speaker 3: that he had. Apaula Creed died before little Donnie as
- 51:17Speaker 3: a Column was born, mother died when he was young,
- 51:20Speaker 3: ends up in group homes, foster homes, you know, Juvie
- 51:25Speaker 3: and Paula Creed's wife played amazingly by Felice Suverershad takes
- 51:31Speaker 3: him in and it's his story. It's essentially the first
- 51:33Speaker 3: Rocky but with this character, you know, trying to make
- 51:36Speaker 3: a name for himself, underdog fighter gets a chance for
- 51:39Speaker 3: a big, big fight and then you know, honestly, the
- 51:42Speaker 3: details don't even matter because it's we all know the story,
- 51:45Speaker 3: but goes the distance, doesn't win, but gets the moral
- 51:48Speaker 3: victory proven himself. So my thing with this movie is,
- 51:52Speaker 3: I actually didn't see it when it first came out
- 51:55Speaker 3: and it's grown on me. I did like it when
- 51:57Speaker 3: I first saw it. I did not go to see
- 51:58Speaker 3: it in theaters, I'll admit I was when I heard
- 52:02Speaker 3: it's like, oh, a new franchise with you know, Apollo
- 52:04Speaker 3: Crete's son. I was like, what is this shit? What
- 52:08Speaker 3: kind of hacky garbage are they gonna put out where
- 52:10Speaker 3: they just like try to make a franchise out of anything,
- 52:13Speaker 3: like come on. Didn't know Ryan Kuegler back then. This
- 52:17Speaker 3: movie is very much a I apologize, Ryan Couegler. I
- 52:20Speaker 3: was not familiar with your game. I really liked the
- 52:23Speaker 3: movie when it came out, but it took another watch
- 52:26Speaker 3: or two when I really grew to love it. Like, yeah,
- 52:30Speaker 3: same thing. We always rate movies out of four gloves.
- 52:32Speaker 3: At the end of the segment, this one is four plus.
- 52:36Speaker 3: The thing with me that kind of took me a
- 52:38Speaker 3: sec to get into it is that the character Creed
- 52:42Speaker 3: a Donnas Creed, like I said, he was adopted by
- 52:45Speaker 3: Felicia Shod and grows up with the Creed millions. You know,
- 52:49Speaker 3: he's in a mansion. He's a little rich boy, still
- 52:51Speaker 3: tries to make his own name, become a fighter without
- 52:55Speaker 3: using the Creed name, and it kind of seemed like
- 52:59Speaker 3: it didn't really it was sort of moving away from
- 53:03Speaker 3: the story of a fighter that like needs the fight
- 53:06Speaker 3: to get out of like a tough situation. Yeah, And
- 53:09Speaker 3: at first I was I thought it was kind of hokey.
- 53:10Speaker 3: I'm like, well, he's kind of a little rich boy. Yeah.
- 53:13Speaker 3: But what when I really turned the movie turned a
- 53:17Speaker 3: page for me. Is when I realized, oh wait a second,
- 53:20Speaker 3: the racial economic issues class struggle is to the point,
- 53:23Speaker 3: it's daddy issues. This movie is daddy issues all the way.
- 53:27Speaker 3: And I got that shit in spades. So not in
- 53:30Speaker 3: the same way, you know, my I don't know what
- 53:33Speaker 3: it's like to grow up without a father. My issue
- 53:35Speaker 3: was that he was around. But I stick with it,
- 53:38Speaker 3: sticks with me. I mean, the movies and the daddy
- 53:41Speaker 3: issues of stuff will be all my life. So that
- 53:43Speaker 3: really is when it really started connecting, and I was like, oh,
- 53:47Speaker 3: I get it. It's it's it really clicked.
- 53:49Speaker 2: You know.
- 53:49Speaker 3: There's a scene where he plays the YouTube video of
- 53:52Speaker 3: Apaulla Crete fighting Rocky Michael be Jordan's shadow boxing against
- 53:56Speaker 3: his father, and I'm like, I thought about fighting my father,
- 53:58Speaker 3: you know, for decades. My god, things like that really
- 54:02Speaker 3: kind of raised the movie's esteem in my mind. Yeah,
- 54:07Speaker 3: A mazing written by Ryan Coogler as well, co written,
- 54:10Speaker 3: just really captures the It's a movie that will bring
- 54:16Speaker 3: in fans of Michael B. Jordan, people interested in Rank Coogler,
- 54:19Speaker 3: and then fans of the Rocky franchise. You know, I've
- 54:22Speaker 3: not I wouldn't say I'm a huge Rocky fan. People
- 54:25Speaker 3: kind of overestimate that franchise. The first movie is a
- 54:28Speaker 3: good movie. I think they kind of put it too
- 54:29Speaker 3: high of a pedestal, but it does. Creed does kind
- 54:34Speaker 3: of treat that franchise and legacy with respect in a
- 54:38Speaker 3: way that you know fans aren't going to be put
- 54:40Speaker 3: off and say like, oh, you know you're giving him
- 54:43Speaker 3: the short short shift. You know, Sarsloan is in this movie,
- 54:45Speaker 3: and he does have put in a great performance. I
- 54:48Speaker 3: don't know how how you feel about I think I
- 54:51Speaker 3: believe he was nominated for an Oscar for this movie. Yeah,
- 54:55Speaker 3: So I want to see how you feel, just in
- 54:58Speaker 3: general about how the Rocky frand as a whole is
- 55:01Speaker 3: kind of seen in our culture.
- 55:02Speaker 2: So I don't like Rocky. I'm gonna be first and
- 55:05Speaker 2: the reason why is because the premise of it is
- 55:10Speaker 2: you have a white heavyweight champion. At the time it
- 55:13Speaker 2: was first create a late seventies, the division was dominated
- 55:16Speaker 2: by black fighters, so this was basically a way to
- 55:21Speaker 2: put a white heavyweight champ in things when black fighters
- 55:25Speaker 2: were running things. So when you look at it like that,
- 55:27Speaker 2: it's like, I see the scenor motive. However, that being said,
- 55:31Speaker 2: keeping it just movies only, I think it's a dope
- 55:35Speaker 2: movie situation. I think it's a dope movie. The whole boxing.
- 55:39Speaker 2: I love boxing, the way it's a movie. I don't
- 55:42Speaker 2: like that he had a statue in Philly before Joe Fraser.
- 55:46Speaker 2: I thought that was crazy. I thought, I still think
- 55:49Speaker 2: it's crazy. With that being said, the movie itself was
- 55:56Speaker 2: a dope boxing movie. It's dope because it's again storytelling,
- 56:01Speaker 2: shows a journey. There's stories, there's failure, there's family stuff,
- 56:06Speaker 2: there's a lot of compelling things that go on and
- 56:09Speaker 2: on and on. So it showed that. Now again the
- 56:13Speaker 2: whole theory and the way it came about, but in
- 56:16Speaker 2: the time it came out, I'm not really here for
- 56:19Speaker 2: because it's like, hey man, you got a random white
- 56:22Speaker 2: underdog guy from Philadelphia fighting a black fighter who was
- 56:26Speaker 2: a champ like a man. We've tried this many times.
- 56:30Speaker 2: We know what sells. But again, in the late seventies,
- 56:32Speaker 2: I get it. But Creed was a hell of a
- 56:36Speaker 2: remix to the whole brand. And you can't talk about
- 56:39Speaker 2: the Rocky brand out Rocky Brown without mentioning Creed. And
- 56:43Speaker 2: I think it's really really good. And Michael B. Jordan
- 56:46Speaker 2: was known for the longest time. You know, He's done
- 56:48Speaker 2: a lot of other things as being the guy from Creed,
- 56:52Speaker 2: like that was one of his biggest roles was being
- 56:54Speaker 2: Michael Jordan from Creed, the Creed actor. You know. So
- 56:57Speaker 2: those are things that you really can't take away. But
- 57:01Speaker 2: the whole Rocky brand is very strong terms of movie listing,
- 57:06Speaker 2: and you know whatnot it has a really good filmography
- 57:10Speaker 2: under its brand.
- 57:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the movies are popular. The movies are
- 57:16Speaker 3: popular for good reasons and for bad reasons. I think
- 57:20Speaker 3: they have a lot of you know, cultural touchstones. You know,
- 57:23Speaker 3: of course, you know, the training montage usually specifically came
- 57:26Speaker 3: from that. You know, the music's iconic, et cetera, et cetera,
- 57:28Speaker 3: et cetera. But yes, I'm with you, and I do
- 57:31Speaker 3: believe that it was propped up because it was a
- 57:35Speaker 3: fantasy white heavyweight fighter. And here's the thing, you say,
- 57:38Speaker 3: fighting a chant from Philly, not just that Apaula Crete
- 57:41Speaker 3: is very specifically supposed to be Muhammad Ali, Like he's
- 57:44Speaker 3: a Muhammad Ali standard. And so that's kind of the
- 57:49Speaker 3: why I think it gets a lot more do than
- 57:51Speaker 3: it deserves. As you know, yeah, the same thing with
- 57:54Speaker 3: a rocky statue in Philly, like please, like please, that's ridiculous.
- 57:59Speaker 2: You will never be able to explain that one to me. Like,
- 58:02Speaker 2: for what Joe Fraser did as a boxer, for everything
- 58:07Speaker 2: he accomplished for his career, for him not to get
- 58:10Speaker 2: a statue first is criminal. And I get it, like
- 58:15Speaker 2: movies are very popular, I get it, I understand, but
- 58:20Speaker 2: hey man, look here, Joe Fraser, Joe Fraser, man, Joe
- 58:24Speaker 2: Fraser literally fought the fight of You can make an
- 58:27Speaker 2: argument that the first Ali Fraser fight is basically the
- 58:30Speaker 2: best boxing match ever when you combine everything. The whole
- 58:35Speaker 2: thing I mean, they've done documentary is about that fight.
- 58:38Speaker 2: So come on, what are we doing here? And the
- 58:41Speaker 2: fact that he won, by the way, so what are
- 58:42Speaker 2: we doing? You know, what are we doing here, you know, like,
- 58:45Speaker 2: what are we doing here? So yeah, man, I'm not
- 58:48Speaker 2: I'm not rolling.
- 58:51Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think that you know, the Creed, the
- 58:56Speaker 3: movie Creed specifically, you know, it gets into fighting in
- 59:00Speaker 3: a way that I don't know for me. And I've
- 59:03Speaker 3: seen all the Rocky movies and I've seen, you know,
- 59:05Speaker 3: the downfalls of it, the dangers getting her blah blah.
- 59:08Speaker 3: But nothing in this in any other boxing movie actually,
- 59:12Speaker 3: for me personally, hits as hard as Felicia Rashad telling
- 59:16Speaker 3: Michael B. Jordan, you know when he says that he
- 59:18Speaker 3: wants to fight, and she's, you know, pissed off because
- 59:22Speaker 3: his father of Paula Creed died in the ring, tells him,
- 59:24Speaker 3: do you know how many times I've had to help
- 59:26Speaker 3: your father up these stairs because he couldn't walk? Do
- 59:28Speaker 3: you know how many times I had to wipe his
- 59:30Speaker 3: ass because he couldn't use his hands?
- 59:32Speaker 2: Like that?
- 59:32Speaker 3: Shit is just like the fact that they put those
- 59:35Speaker 3: lines specifically in a boxing movie where you're supposed to
- 59:38Speaker 3: root for the boxer is just wild to me.
- 59:41Speaker 2: You know.
- 59:41Speaker 3: They nothing is as like visc role as those two lines,
- 59:46Speaker 3: and it's it's just amazing, like it and the fact
- 59:50Speaker 3: that you know, to the character, it doesn't matter, you know,
- 59:54Speaker 3: he still wants to fight, and a little personal connection
- 59:58Speaker 3: that I had, like yeah, like twenty one when I
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: was like starting twenty twenty one, when I was doing
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: my own boxing training, nothing serious, just doing it for fun,
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: started sparring, getting my ass absolutely kicked, and I loved.
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: I had so much fun. I loved it. And I
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: was telling myself like, you know, whatever this will heal,
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: it'll be good. I knew in the back of my
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: head and every side of my head I could get
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: seriously injured because I was I was a mid thirties
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: back guy. You know, uh never did anything as hard
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: as boxing. But I loved it. And you know, I
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: saw the movie and I was like, damn it. I know,
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: like I get it. I get it, you know, even
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: for somebody that's not even anywhere close to taking you know,
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: boxing seriously. Like I just had so much fun going
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: into that gym and getting back. Asking didn't matter.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: I was back.
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: I came back the next day and the next day,
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: and you know, did it for a few years. Took
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: a break just to focus on getting fat again, you know,
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: reconnect with my roots. But you know, just seeing the
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: passion in the character and Michael B. Jordan's acting like
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: I hard at a really like solid time when I
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: needed you know, twenty twenty was a tough time for
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: a lot of people, myself included. I got super fat,
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: super depressed about it, you know, pushing myself to get
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: it into the gym and going hard bro and you know,
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: doing this of all things. I wasn't just like, I
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: don't know, sitting there doing push ups like I was
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: doing all the crazy stuff and you know, getting punched
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: in the face over and over. This movie was very
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: very inspirational to me personally, and it really it just
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: guy said, got better and better with here with a
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: few years. I actually wasn't even gonna watch it for
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: this episode because I know it's so well but I
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: was like, well, why would I turn out an opportunity
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: to watch you know, this movie again because I love
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: it so much? Put it on. It's just over two
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: hours flew by like that. I didn't feel the length
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: wasn't more. Wasn't like, oh this movie again that I've
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: seen five or six times. Man, I can just watch
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: it over and over and it's it's amazing. And yeah,
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: the performance. And yeah, Michael B. Jordan, you know, he
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: was in the Wire as a kid. I watched him
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: on Friday Night Lights, the TV show as like a teenager.
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: Before this, he was in that god awful Fantastic Four
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: that I couldn't even finish. I couldn't watch the whole thing,
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: absolute garbage. But then this movie came out, and that's
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: what made Michael B. Jordan who he is, you know,
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: this guy, him and Ryan Coogler, his collaboration in this
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: movie specifically, like this is what made him the guy.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: You know, this what made him a household name. And
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: I'm really glad that that garbage fantastic for a movie
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: did not hurt his career in one bit. And then
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: we've all forgotten about it. But yeah, so much, like
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: I said, I could talk for a full hour on
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: this about this movie. But one thing I wanted to mention.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: A couple of things.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: I never liked Tessa Thompson before this movie. I first
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: saw her in Veronica Mars the TV show when she
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: was younger, kind of a one note mingo character. It
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: wasn'tuntil this movie that I realized, oh, she actually is
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: a great actress, has some great range, can you know,
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: be very dynamic, played a great character. So that completely
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: turned me around, complete one ady on Testa Thompson, which
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: I'm happy about. Tony Bellew is the guy that plays
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: the main and tags the main challenger in the movie
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: Pretty Boy Ricky conn.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: So.
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: Tony bellew is a professional British boxer who plays pretty
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: Ricky Conlin in this movie the main attagonists have you
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: do you know this guy? Have you heard about him
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: at all?
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: No? No, I'm not.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I looked him up, you know. He so he
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: was a cruiserweight champ WBC had the WBC belt. So
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: he's a legit fighter. But it always makes me laugh.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: You know. He goes into the ring for the big
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: final fight Michael B. Jordan looking like he does just
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: insanely jacked fourteen pack apps. The arms aren't guns, they're cannons,
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: and then Tony Belly takes off his robe and my man,
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: I could be shaped like him in like four weeks
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: of working hard. You know, I know he's a legit fighter.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: The front is like flat, like a cardboard box. His
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: arms are like cylindrical. Again, he's talented. I'm not gonna
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: take it away, but I could look like Tony Bellue in
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: this movie after just give me, like I said, four
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: weeks of working hard and I could. I could tell
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: the ladies I'm shaped like a professional boxer. I just
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: wouldn't tell them which one.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Wow Wow.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: And then you look at MPJ and here, like the
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: man is just just insanely cut, huge, like protruding man.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: He took the role seriously.
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: He took the role seriously. And yeah, you know, no
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: disrespect to Tony Belly. Like I said, if my man
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: is a champion, he's a legitimate fighter. MBJ was not.
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: But it just it never won't make me laugh when
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: he takes that robe off and it's just like you so,
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: but hey, you know, it takes all kinds and of
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: course the man had skill. But but yeah, I could,
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: I could. I could look like professional boxer Tony Bellue
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: at the time this movie was filmed that he was
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: still fighting, like he he won the WC belt like
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: the year after. It's not like he retired and was
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: just kind of you know, chilling. So but you know,
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: good performance from him. Andrew andre Ward is in this
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: for a little bit, yep, and the sequel. A lot
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: of people from the boxing world stitched durand the cut
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: man is in this who I love because he looks
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: exactly like Edward Jim's almost to the point where you
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: think it is him in the movie. But but yeah, man, Scott,
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: I I it's like, I don't I don't even know,
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: like what what to say in the short time, short
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: pier that we have about this movie. That just like
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: I could just go on and on and on, so
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: I won't do that, you know, a rap, But I'll
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: just say, like, if you have not seen Creed, you
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: know it is a strong recommend if you're not a
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: boxing fan and you want to see a great movie
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: with some you know, well directed fights. Oh and we
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: can't forget the first major fight that Creed is in
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: completely one shot, like there's no cuts. It is one
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: is a winner. It did cheat. It filmed the round
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: for two minutes, not three. I counted. I looked at
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: the timing. But that's okay, really well choreograph fights, great
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: direction from Ryan Cougler. Just you know, there's a reason
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: that my Man Coogler is, you know, one of the
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: one of the best modern directors, one of the best
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: younger modern directors, MBJ, one of the best stars of
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: our generation. Yep, my Little Steel Book here has Part
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: one and two. I really like Part two. Not as
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: good as the first one, but I really really dug it.
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: Have you actually have you seen any of the sequels?
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: James, Yes, yes, yes, they're all. They're all relatively well
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: for what a boxing movie is. I mean, they've kind
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: of gotten kind of jumped the sharp fighting down the stadium.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: We got Steven Stephen a Smith involved, so it's a
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: little different. But it's cool because they're they're also big
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Hollywood budget type films now, so you're gonna add more
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: theatrics to it on all four.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's a big budget boxing film at a
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: time when a lot of boxing films do not get
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: a big budget. And even if they got midget, they're
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: not making a lot of money, right They're they're not
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: you know, lighting up with the box office. So I
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: don't know the franchise will continue. I'd come back for
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: ten of these. Honestly. I just love MBJ so much.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: And yeah, I don't know. Like I said, I don't
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: want to just keep rambling because as much as I
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: love this movie, I just want to say, you know,
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: four gloves from each of us yep, four gloves check
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: it out if you haven't already. And yeah, I'll go
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: last thing, I promise.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: My eyes were tearing up. Yeah, my eyes were tearing
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: up last night watching this movie. I gotta tell you, man,
