- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to Hunts rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tailed Woods and now
- 0:08Speaker 1: your host, Spencer new Hearth. This is Wired to Hunt's
- 0:15Speaker 1: rout Fresh Radio powered by First Light. I am your host,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Spencer new Heart and this week we're talking about hunting
- 0:21Speaker 1: December weather fronts. Welcome to Wired to Hunt's rout Fresh Radio.
- 0:40Speaker 1: This is episode four seven and this week again I
- 0:43Speaker 1: am joined by Mark Kenyon who is back home in
- 0:46Speaker 1: Michigan and has a deer movement report for us. So
- 0:50Speaker 1: what have you been seeing Mark as of late from
- 0:53Speaker 1: your glassing and trail camera observations. Yeah, so I have
- 0:58Speaker 1: not been out hunting really in Michigan, and well a
- 1:03Speaker 1: long time. It's been about a month since I've hunted
- 1:07Speaker 1: in my homestead because all the trail I've been doing.
- 1:09Speaker 1: But I have been home since I don't know, I've
- 1:12Speaker 1: been home for five days or something like that and
- 1:15Speaker 1: been able to do some glassing. I've done some camera
- 1:18Speaker 1: move I moved some cameras yesterday actually, and so I've
- 1:20Speaker 1: been getting some new pictures in from the cell cams.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And here's what I've seen over the last couple of days. Uh.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Number one yesterday while glassing, and this morning in one
- 1:30Speaker 1: of my cell camp pictures, I've seen bucks still fighting.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So there's still some of that running activity happening. Even
- 1:36Speaker 1: though what today that we're recording, it's you know, end
- 1:39Speaker 1: of November when this episode comes out, will be the
- 1:41Speaker 1: first day of December. There's still that kind of running
- 1:43Speaker 1: stuff happening. So there's bucks fighting. And yesterday morning, while
- 1:47Speaker 1: watching down into a little field the area I could
- 1:50Speaker 1: watch from above, I saw a mature buck when when
- 1:53Speaker 1: I say mature, like a three year old buck, locked
- 1:56Speaker 1: on on a dough still. He was like on her heart,
- 1:58Speaker 1: standing over her. Everywhere she went he went. So you know,
- 2:02Speaker 1: that kind of thing is is still out there. So
- 2:04Speaker 1: I think that's a really important thing to take note of. Uh.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The second thing I think that might be of note,
- 2:10Speaker 1: at least across parts of the northern half of the country,
- 2:13Speaker 1: is we just had a system moved through and drop
- 2:15Speaker 1: a bunch of snow. And since that snow came through
- 2:18Speaker 1: yesterday and over the last couple of days, UH, increased
- 2:22Speaker 1: movement on the food sources. All my cameras that are
- 2:24Speaker 1: over cut corn combined corn just blew up last night
- 2:28Speaker 1: and this morning after, we had three four inches of
- 2:30Speaker 1: snow dropped. So that's what I've seen so far. Um
- 2:33Speaker 1: kind of what I expected this time of year. Deer
- 2:36Speaker 1: moving more and more towards food, and a little bit
- 2:39Speaker 1: of that late rut kind of stuff still going. Those
- 2:41Speaker 1: are my kind of headlines for what I'm seeing and
- 2:44Speaker 1: what I would expect for this this period. Yeah, and
- 2:47Speaker 1: you mentioned snow, but it seems like following that snow,
- 2:50Speaker 1: now like the day that this episode is going to
- 2:53Speaker 1: drop on December one, we're gonna have, like dangiars some
- 2:56Speaker 1: record breaking temperatures in the West as far as warm weather,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and I know there's yeah, I know the rest of
- 3:02Speaker 1: the country is seeing something similar. And when it comes
- 3:05Speaker 1: to white tail hunting in the weather, I know, like
- 3:08Speaker 1: we're still focused on it in October and we're so
- 3:10Speaker 1: focused on in November, but I think it's sort of
- 3:14Speaker 1: forgotten about when we get to December, and personally, like
- 3:16Speaker 1: I'm often just checking like wind directions and I'm not
- 3:18Speaker 1: caring so much about precipitation or the air temperature and
- 3:22Speaker 1: things like that. But it's it's something that we should
- 3:25Speaker 1: still factor into our setups. So what would you consider
- 3:28Speaker 1: Mark like good weather for December and bad weather for December. Alright,
- 3:34Speaker 1: So I want to preface this by saying that my
- 3:37Speaker 1: perspective on how weather impacts during the late season has
- 3:41Speaker 1: changed a little bit. There's been a slight evolution, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: by that I mean, well, let me first answer your question.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Your question was, what's like ideal late season weather, and
- 3:52Speaker 1: that best case scenario is extreme cold or extreme snow,
- 3:58Speaker 1: Like you want that epic winter weather, I want a
- 4:00Speaker 1: thirty degree temperature trap or I want single digit temperatures
- 4:04Speaker 1: or sub zero I want six inches of fresh snow,
- 4:09Speaker 1: anything like that. You know, it's hard to it's hard
- 4:14Speaker 1: to put guarantees on anything, but just about every time
- 4:17Speaker 1: you get that kind of weather event, the deer are
- 4:20Speaker 1: really going to be on their feet and they're really
- 4:22Speaker 1: going to be feeding heavy earlier in the day typically.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So if you get that precipitation event, if you have
- 4:27Speaker 1: those really cool temperatures, you've got a great situation for
- 4:31Speaker 1: deer moving just a little bit more, moving during daylight
- 4:34Speaker 1: just a little bit more, and being especially interested in
- 4:37Speaker 1: food at this time of year, because like right now,
- 4:39Speaker 1: early December right on through the rest of the month,
- 4:43Speaker 1: these deer are really doing one thing. They're recuperating from
- 4:46Speaker 1: the rut, and they're trying to build up their fat
- 4:48Speaker 1: reserves so they can survive the upcoming winter. So that
- 4:51Speaker 1: means food, food, food, and I when they have that
- 4:55Speaker 1: really cool temperatures, it's even more important because they need
- 4:58Speaker 1: those calories to stay warm and to stay live. So
- 5:01Speaker 1: if you've got that, I'm I'm particularly excited. Now. The
- 5:05Speaker 1: opposite of that would be really high temperatures. If you
- 5:08Speaker 1: have really warm, really above average temperatures, generally that is
- 5:14Speaker 1: going to suppress dear movement by some degree. It's at
- 5:17Speaker 1: least not going to help things. Um Now, my evolution
- 5:21Speaker 1: has been this in the past, I would not hunt
- 5:25Speaker 1: unless I had that really really good weather, or at
- 5:28Speaker 1: least I wouldn't hunt often. I would keep my best
- 5:30Speaker 1: spots untouched all the way until I had that very
- 5:33Speaker 1: best weather. And in a lot of cases, I think
- 5:36Speaker 1: that is a good idea. If you've got a farm
- 5:38Speaker 1: that you know you just hunt, or if you have
- 5:40Speaker 1: something that's managed and you know that nobody else is
- 5:43Speaker 1: gonna be mucking it up, and if you can wait
- 5:45Speaker 1: for those special events that you know a couple of
- 5:47Speaker 1: times in the in the winter, when you have those
- 5:49Speaker 1: best case scenarios and slip in and swing for the
- 5:51Speaker 1: fences on that big old buck you're after, you know
- 5:54Speaker 1: that's not a bad way to do it. But what
- 5:57Speaker 1: I will say at the same time is that you
- 6:00Speaker 1: don't want to let the weather keep you from hunting.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And this is something that I've seen, you know, across
- 6:06Speaker 1: the entire season. Right, weather certainly helps, but at the
- 6:09Speaker 1: same time, I've seen so many days where the weather
- 6:12Speaker 1: is not supposed to be good, where you know such
- 6:14Speaker 1: and such deer app and such and such predictor and
- 6:16Speaker 1: blah blah blah, blah blah. They're all like, oh, it's bad,
- 6:18Speaker 1: it's bad, it's bad, And then you go out there
- 6:20Speaker 1: and you have a great hunt. And I think what
- 6:22Speaker 1: that just keeps your minding is that you know deer
- 6:24Speaker 1: or wild animals, and no matter how well we think
- 6:27Speaker 1: we know how they want to move and when they
- 6:29Speaker 1: want to move, we don't know crap like dear or dear,
- 6:33Speaker 1: and you're never gonna see him. You're never gonna have
- 6:34Speaker 1: a chance unless you're out there. So while I certainly
- 6:37Speaker 1: really excited when I get those really coold temperatures, and
- 6:41Speaker 1: I will prioritize going to my better places. When I
- 6:44Speaker 1: have those better conditions, I'm not gonna let a weekend
- 6:47Speaker 1: pass and not hunt because it's above average. I'll find
- 6:50Speaker 1: somewhere I can still go because you never know, So
- 6:54Speaker 1: save maybe your best places for those best days, but
- 6:57Speaker 1: still get out there and be in a position to
- 6:59Speaker 1: maybe take advantage of, you know, a wild piece of
- 7:02Speaker 1: luck you just never know. And then also remember that,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you know, let the deer tell the story too. So
- 7:09Speaker 1: if you can scout from afar, like I love scouting
- 7:12Speaker 1: in the late season, because this isn't the time of
- 7:15Speaker 1: year when I personally like to volume hunt, you know,
- 7:17Speaker 1: on the rut. It's just like hunt, hunt, hunt on hunt,
- 7:20Speaker 1: be out there as much as you possibly can. In
- 7:22Speaker 1: the late season, I am a little bit more, um,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I guess, just more careful about how many times I
- 7:28Speaker 1: go and when those times are, and so I want
- 7:31Speaker 1: to make sure I'm getting a good bang for my
- 7:34Speaker 1: buck when I do go, so often I will try
- 7:36Speaker 1: to sit on a hilltop or getting an observation, stand
- 7:40Speaker 1: kind of outside of the action and watch so I'm
- 7:42Speaker 1: still out there, I'm still learning something, and then I
- 7:45Speaker 1: can see, okay, you know, what even though it's forty
- 7:47Speaker 1: five degrees today and not so great, I saw that
- 7:49Speaker 1: buck hum after step out of this little betting area
- 7:52Speaker 1: four yards away, even on this day. So now I know, well,
- 7:56Speaker 1: conditions to be damned, he's moving. Now I can take
- 7:59Speaker 1: a swing. Same thing can go for trail cameras, especially
- 8:01Speaker 1: with cell cameras these days. Put those somewhere on a
- 8:04Speaker 1: food source where you can learn what they're doing, and
- 8:06Speaker 1: watch those if the deer is starting to move, even
- 8:09Speaker 1: on those warm days. Forget the weather, trust what you're
- 8:12Speaker 1: seeing going there and hunt. Yeah, and that emphasis on
- 8:17Speaker 1: doing some scouting in December, I think is really important.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I killed one of my biggest bucks with a muzzloader
- 8:22Speaker 1: in South Dakota. UM. I hunted really hard for like
- 8:25Speaker 1: fifteen days, but a lot of those mornings, although I
- 8:28Speaker 1: had a gun in my hand, I had no chance
- 8:30Speaker 1: at killing a deer because I was set up so
- 8:32Speaker 1: far away. I just wanted to glass what they were doing.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And oftentimes what you'd see is, however deer would exit
- 8:38Speaker 1: a field in the morning, you'd often see them entering
- 8:40Speaker 1: the same way in that evening. And it was a
- 8:42Speaker 1: way to you know, really make my evening hunts even
- 8:45Speaker 1: more productive while you know, sacrificing my mornings, which which
- 8:49Speaker 1: weren't going to be great quality anyways. And and that
- 8:52Speaker 1: emphasis on food and evenings is something you're gonna hear
- 8:56Speaker 1: about from all of our guests this week, which include
- 8:58Speaker 1: David g. A Rizzo in New York, Kyler Moppert in Louisiana,
- 9:02Speaker 1: Doug During in Wisconsin, and then Vince Bodiata in Tennessee.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I love it. I'll tell you what I want to
- 9:09Speaker 1: leave folks with one last thought, and it's this, I
- 9:12Speaker 1: know that November is gone, right. We looked forward to
- 9:15Speaker 1: November all year. It's this big, amped up, high anticipation event,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and there's there's always, at least for me, a little
- 9:23Speaker 1: bit of this um letdown. Once November is gone. This
- 9:26Speaker 1: thing that we dreamed of is now in the past,
- 9:29Speaker 1: and we've got to wait a whole another year to
- 9:31Speaker 1: come to it again. And so for some people that
- 9:33Speaker 1: leads to you know, Quentin putting in, you know, throwing
- 9:38Speaker 1: it in for the year, being done hunting, or not
- 9:41Speaker 1: thinking that we got any more chances left, feeling like, wow,
- 9:43Speaker 1: that's it, you know, what what happened? Happened? My best
- 9:45Speaker 1: chances are behind me. I just want to remind you
- 9:49Speaker 1: all that we you will be wishing, you will be
- 9:53Speaker 1: dreaming of these days of hunting again. A couple of
- 9:57Speaker 1: months from now, you'll be sitting there thinking, man, I
- 9:59Speaker 1: wish I could hunt now, but you can't because the
- 10:01Speaker 1: season is closed. So while the season still open, get
- 10:04Speaker 1: out there and enjoy it still and remember that anything
- 10:07Speaker 1: can happen. I have had many many people have had
- 10:10Speaker 1: a lot of success here in December. Several of my
- 10:13Speaker 1: best Michigan bucks were killed the last few days of November,
- 10:16Speaker 1: first few days of December. So there's a lot of
- 10:18Speaker 1: good hunting ahead. There's still some running activity behead. This
- 10:22Speaker 1: good weather like we talked about, can spur a lot
- 10:24Speaker 1: of great activity. Um, So they're good times still out
- 10:28Speaker 1: ahead of us. Don't miss them. Yeah, And if you
- 10:30Speaker 1: need something to motivate you to get in the woods,
- 10:33Speaker 1: we just had episode three of One Week in November
- 10:36Speaker 1: drop on November the day before this episode comes out,
- 10:39Speaker 1: so it's already up. Uh. One of us kills a
- 10:42Speaker 1: buck on that episode, and then episode four or five, six,
- 10:46Speaker 1: seven drops every Tuesday through the end of the year.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And if you have been following along with one Week

- 11:59Speaker 1: If that's too rich for your bloody you don't care

- 14:05Speaker 1: next week, Mark, all right. And joining us online first
- 14:10Speaker 1: is David G. A Rizzo from New York from tagging Bragg. Now,
- 14:13Speaker 1: David in New York. What would you say the buckettivity
- 14:16Speaker 1: has been lately on a scale of one to ten?
- 14:20Speaker 1: Oh the past week? Honestly, it's it's probably been about
- 14:24Speaker 1: a nine. I think the combination of a little bit
- 14:27Speaker 1: of a second swing of rock coming in along with
- 14:30Speaker 1: some very harsh weather up there this past year four
- 14:33Speaker 1: s and the deer onto the food. Um. We we
- 14:37Speaker 1: as a crew killed two bucks in the last week
- 14:39Speaker 1: up there, one being our number one target buck. Shall
- 14:42Speaker 1: I mean? Yeah, it's it's been on fire up there
- 14:45Speaker 1: this last week and we took advantage of it. Yeah,
- 14:48Speaker 1: that number one target buck you killed was an absolute slammer.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Tell us about that hunt, David. Why were you in
- 14:53Speaker 1: that spot and why did that buck want to be there?
- 14:57Speaker 1: You know, we we haven't seen this particular r buck
- 15:00Speaker 1: very much on trail camera, but watched them grow up
- 15:03Speaker 1: all summer and the place that I was hunting was
- 15:07Speaker 1: actually a combination of beans and corn, and we we orchestrated,
- 15:12Speaker 1: we constructed this field specifically for this time of year
- 15:17Speaker 1: when the conditions get harsh. We had about a foot
- 15:20Speaker 1: of snow up there, and it was an absolute blizzard.
- 15:23Speaker 1: When I went in and I was I was on
- 15:25Speaker 1: the food. I mean, that's what I was relying on.
- 15:28Speaker 1: And I knew I had hunted there the day before
- 15:31Speaker 1: a lot of deer. I saw, I think almost thirty
- 15:33Speaker 1: deer on this four acre little food plot, and so
- 15:37Speaker 1: I knew the deer We're gonna be hitting it with
- 15:38Speaker 1: the harsh conditions up there. Sometimes I joke and say,
- 15:42Speaker 1: the harsher the conditions, the better opportunity you have to
- 15:45Speaker 1: kill one of these big, mature New York bucks. And
- 15:50Speaker 1: it paid dividends because I had probably twelve the fifteen
- 15:53Speaker 1: deer in front of me, and he came out at
- 15:55Speaker 1: the bottom of the food plot and was on a
- 15:57Speaker 1: literally on a string, and stop up in the middle
- 16:00Speaker 1: of these deer at thirty eight yards. Never in my
- 16:03Speaker 1: life that I think I would shoot a buck with
- 16:05Speaker 1: a bow during rifle season up in New York. But
- 16:08Speaker 1: to have it be my personal best then and my
- 16:11Speaker 1: first booner ever is it's insane, man, It's insane. So
- 16:16Speaker 1: what other food sources would you say are relevant right
- 16:18Speaker 1: now for deer hunters in that part of the country.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Um beans in corn have been the hottest for us,
- 16:25Speaker 1: but the deer have been hammering the turn ups as well.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I mean, really, any late season food source that you
- 16:30Speaker 1: know that's that you have on your property. The deer
- 16:33Speaker 1: seemed to be shifting to that a lot more afternoon movement,
- 16:37Speaker 1: a lot less morning movement, So our our morning hunts
- 16:40Speaker 1: are probably gonna be few and far between moving forward.
- 16:44Speaker 1: But the afternoons, especially when the when the weather conditions
- 16:48Speaker 1: are right, are are on fire. Right now, do you
- 16:50Speaker 1: notice the shift in bedding this time of year? Absolutely?
- 16:55Speaker 1: We We actually are seeing a lot more of our
- 16:57Speaker 1: bucks that we watched all summer shift back onto our
- 17:01Speaker 1: property where we have not seen them or had trail
- 17:03Speaker 1: camera pictures of them in the last month month and
- 17:06Speaker 1: a half or so. So a lot of the bucks
- 17:08Speaker 1: we watched grow up for the summer are shifting back.
- 17:11Speaker 1: And this the buck that I shot in particular, was
- 17:13Speaker 1: one of them. And like I said, the combination of
- 17:16Speaker 1: the food and the harsh weather conditions are are what
- 17:19Speaker 1: did it for him. Historically, in early December in state
- 17:23Speaker 1: like New York, what do you notice for signmaking? You know,
- 17:29Speaker 1: it's funny because the bucks actually just started to shift
- 17:32Speaker 1: back to um making some scrapes and hitting some of
- 17:36Speaker 1: the more primary scrapes. Other than that, it's it's nothing.
- 17:41Speaker 1: The signmaking is nothing crazy. You may get, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: a few random scrapes here popping up um, but it's
- 17:47Speaker 1: it's really nothing crazy. Honestly, this time of year up
- 17:50Speaker 1: in New York, the weather conditions are typically so harsh
- 17:54Speaker 1: that it's it's really all about being on the food
- 17:57Speaker 1: source and taking advantage of trying to get in between
- 17:59Speaker 1: food in betting area, you know, to get in front
- 18:02Speaker 1: of them in early December, where do you want to
- 18:04Speaker 1: be running your trail cameras? In New York, we've current
- 18:09Speaker 1: or we've recently shifted all of our trail cameras to
- 18:12Speaker 1: field edges UM trying to pick up like trying to
- 18:16Speaker 1: basically be on the best trail coming out into the
- 18:19Speaker 1: food and we'll have we'll have two to three different
- 18:22Speaker 1: cameras per you know, two ac or three acre food plots,
- 18:25Speaker 1: so we're really trying to collect as much information as
- 18:28Speaker 1: we can on those food sources, because we know different
- 18:31Speaker 1: bucks that we haven't seen in a while, or maybe
- 18:33Speaker 1: that we've never seen before, are moving back into these
- 18:36Speaker 1: areas going forward. Then this next week or so, what
- 18:39Speaker 1: do you think that BUCKETCTVT is going to be on
- 18:41Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten in New York? You
- 18:45Speaker 1: know what, I believe it's gonna stay high. I believe
- 18:48Speaker 1: it will be probably right around an eight because look
- 18:51Speaker 1: forecasting the weather for Thursday, Friday, Saturday up there, it
- 18:54Speaker 1: looks like we're gonna be getting some more snow, some
- 18:57Speaker 1: more cold weather. And like I said, that's that's the
- 19:00Speaker 1: bread and butter this time of year is playing those
- 19:01Speaker 1: weather fronts. We're gonna have another one this week. I
- 19:04Speaker 1: think it's gonna be I think it's gonna be out
- 19:06Speaker 1: on fire again. It'll be an eight. All right, David,
- 19:08Speaker 1: congrats again on the amazing deer. Thanks for joining me.
- 19:12Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Thanks for having me alright and joining
- 19:15Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Kyler Moppert from Louisiana.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Bow hunter in Louisiana. Now, Kyler in Louisiana, what would
- 19:22Speaker 1: you say the buck activities been lately on the scale
- 19:24Speaker 1: of one to ten uh scale with one of ten,
- 19:27Speaker 1: I probably put it at a seven right now. Um,
- 19:30Speaker 1: we've got some good buck action happening with colch fronts
- 19:34Speaker 1: coming through. Obviously a lot of people people in the
- 19:37Speaker 1: woods with um Thanksgiving holiday and John season kicking in recently. UM,
- 19:42Speaker 1: but also seeing a lot of just general daytime movements
- 19:45Speaker 1: on my cameras, and then a lot of people that
- 19:47Speaker 1: I know that are reporting to us are seeing a
- 19:49Speaker 1: lot of daytime movement as well as putting some good uh,
- 19:52Speaker 1: some good bucks on the ground. So when you're part
- 19:54Speaker 1: of this state, what would you label the white tails
- 19:57Speaker 1: there as this phase of the rut. Uh, they're still
- 20:01Speaker 1: in pre rut. So um, kind of northeast Louisiana is
- 20:04Speaker 1: gonna be pre rut. I think main rut for O
- 20:06Speaker 1: this area is going to be in the next week
- 20:08Speaker 1: or two UM. And then a lot of the majority
- 20:11Speaker 1: of the state areas six is a big area that's
- 20:14Speaker 1: gonna be UM heavy rut at the end of December
- 20:17Speaker 1: beginning of January. That's when I would say at least
- 20:20Speaker 1: fifty of the state is rutting in that point in time.
- 20:23Speaker 1: So right now we're in kind of like signmaking stage
- 20:26Speaker 1: starting to see a lot of a lot of scrapes,
- 20:28Speaker 1: a lot more rubs, rub lines. And because of that,
- 20:31Speaker 1: and I guess the bucks are setting their territories. I'm
- 20:34Speaker 1: getting a lot more action in the daytime and at night. UM. Honestly,
- 20:38Speaker 1: just very consistent daytime sorry, consistent camera um movement, Whereas
- 20:44Speaker 1: up until this point it's been very it's either been
- 20:47Speaker 1: nocturnal or crepuscular UM, with very little daytime or midday movement.
- 20:53Speaker 1: If you're doing some in season scouting right now in Louisiana,
- 20:56Speaker 1: what are some things that you're looking for? Uh? UM. Well,
- 21:01Speaker 1: by now all of the white oaks are are are
- 21:04Speaker 1: done dropping, UM, which is always a little a little
- 21:08Speaker 1: sad because that's just such a heavily preferred food source
- 21:11Speaker 1: early season through UM through maybe the first half of November,
- 21:16Speaker 1: middle of October, the first half of November. UM. Right
- 21:19Speaker 1: now I'm getting a lot of action on um. Uh.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Red oaks and pin oaks, UM. Those are gonna drop
- 21:26Speaker 1: from about now and to the end of the season. UM.
- 21:30Speaker 1: And then a lot of the brows is starting to
- 21:32Speaker 1: kind of clear out. We're not it's not you get
- 21:35Speaker 1: into an area with a lot of deer sign you'll
- 21:37Speaker 1: see a little um uh uh, every every top of
- 21:43Speaker 1: every brows has been snipped off or eating by now.
- 21:46Speaker 1: So I think that also has a lot to do
- 21:48Speaker 1: with why deer moving more frequently. They don't have to
- 21:50Speaker 1: move fifty yards to eat and go back late lay down,
- 21:53Speaker 1: They've got to move a couple of hundred or something
- 21:55Speaker 1: like that. So UM, right now, it's still um, still
- 21:59Speaker 1: good to set up on food source um features and
- 22:04Speaker 1: oak flats things like that. UM. But if you've got
- 22:08Speaker 1: travel routes that are trails where you know a buck
- 22:13Speaker 1: or dose are using heavily, that's and something that's in
- 22:16Speaker 1: between food sources and travel route, then that's a great
- 22:19Speaker 1: place to set off set up on. Currently, you mentioned
- 22:22Speaker 1: that daylight activity has been increasing. Do you notice better
- 22:25Speaker 1: movement right now in the mornings or evenings in Louisiana.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I'm seeing on camera Me personally, I'm seeing better morning
- 22:36Speaker 1: movement when hunting. I'm seeing more dear in the evening. Um. Now,
- 22:42Speaker 1: that's been very average for me My whole hunting career
- 22:44Speaker 1: is because obviously you're getting in trying to set up
- 22:46Speaker 1: in the dark and the light and make noise, and
- 22:48Speaker 1: you don't know what you're pushing out of an area
- 22:50Speaker 1: when you go in in the morning. So um. But
- 22:52Speaker 1: as far as activity goes more, morning has been hot,
- 22:55Speaker 1: but afternoons are are are still my favorite time hot.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Um and they're they're both productives in early December. Where
- 23:02Speaker 1: do you want to be running your trail cameras? Um? Well,
- 23:08Speaker 1: I started doing something new in the last two years
- 23:12Speaker 1: that's worked out well for me um as I've become
- 23:15Speaker 1: a little more educated on scrapes, UM and signmaking. I'm
- 23:20Speaker 1: actually trying to position my cameras not directly on scrapes,
- 23:25Speaker 1: but I would get more daytime photos of bucks being
- 23:28Speaker 1: downwind a baby to fifty yards behind a scrape along
- 23:33Speaker 1: what could be a travel route or away in which
- 23:36Speaker 1: a buck would try and get down wind of a scrape.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So anywhere that's a a slew edge, a swamp edge,
- 23:43Speaker 1: lake edge, whatever you want to say. Um, that could
- 23:45Speaker 1: be downwind from a scrape or or some sort of
- 23:48Speaker 1: signmaking or even betting. Um. I'm seeing the most quality
- 23:55Speaker 1: bucks in the daytime downwind of very literal, real sign
- 24:01Speaker 1: you know. I used to be in the habit of
- 24:03Speaker 1: hanging cameras right on top of a scrape like like
- 24:05Speaker 1: it's the Truman Show, and I'm always waiting for that
- 24:08Speaker 1: star to show up, and I wouldn't get anything to
- 24:11Speaker 1: three in the morning. And then I started putting cameras
- 24:13Speaker 1: around that area, on travel routes or pinch points or
- 24:17Speaker 1: like I said, boundary lines like water, and I'm getting
- 24:20Speaker 1: a lot more pictures. And those d are still checking those,
- 24:23Speaker 1: but they're just wind checking them from doubt. They're not
- 24:24Speaker 1: going up and peeing in them and reinfreshing them up
- 24:27Speaker 1: during the day. A lot of times they're just walking
- 24:29Speaker 1: down wind and staying in the thick stuff. So I've
- 24:32Speaker 1: always been a fan of putting cameras on um water
- 24:37Speaker 1: boundaries if you have that, which we had a lot
- 24:39Speaker 1: of down here um and uh and and and seeing
- 24:44Speaker 1: those deer that are skirting the edges, trying to stay
- 24:46Speaker 1: in the thick stuff or in the buckbrush or something
- 24:49Speaker 1: without exposing themselves out in the open. Going forward, then
- 24:52Speaker 1: the six week or so, what do you think that
- 24:54Speaker 1: bucket t D is going to be on a scale
- 24:56Speaker 1: of one detain in Louisiana. I think it's gon to
- 25:00Speaker 1: stay a seven UM for the next week or two
- 25:02Speaker 1: UM and then quickly rise up to an eight as
- 25:05Speaker 1: we get some more cold attempts and Christmas gets closer
- 25:07Speaker 1: and that prod action heats up big time and we
- 25:12Speaker 1: start to get a lot of rut action going. So
- 25:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna stick with the seven for the next week. Alright, Kyler,
- 25:17Speaker 1: great intel, good luck with the rest of your season.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me. Thanks Spencer, all right and joining
- 25:23Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Doug During, who you've
- 25:25Speaker 1: seen and heard on Meat Eater and Wired to Hunt
- 25:27Speaker 1: content in Wisconsin. Now, Dug in Wisconsin, what would you
- 25:31Speaker 1: say the buck activity has been lately on a scale
- 25:33Speaker 1: of one to ten, Well, Spencer, I think we'd be
- 25:36Speaker 1: at about a three or four. We just finished our
- 25:39Speaker 1: nine day gun season and with that big disruption, bucks
- 25:45Speaker 1: have given up on breeding and are more concerned about
- 25:47Speaker 1: security and um, you know, refueling from the from the
- 25:53Speaker 1: rut um. So the definitely the activity, the bucket activity,
- 25:59Speaker 1: the rud activities. So lay down now, you just killed
- 26:01Speaker 1: a great buck last week with your rifle. Tell us
- 26:04Speaker 1: about that hunt. Why were you in that area and
- 26:06Speaker 1: why did that buck want to be there? Well, it's
- 26:09Speaker 1: an isolated area on the farm and it's a soybean
- 26:13Speaker 1: uh field on the neighbors. And I was up there
- 26:17Speaker 1: checking on a stand and as I came up around
- 26:20Speaker 1: it's one of those areas that you creep up into,
- 26:23Speaker 1: and about three yards away, I see this deer and
- 26:25Speaker 1: it's clearly a buck. I could see his antlers from
- 26:28Speaker 1: that distance. Um. I was there checking that field, hoping
- 26:31Speaker 1: to take an ant list deer, and and there he is,
- 26:35Speaker 1: working his way from a betting area out along the
- 26:39Speaker 1: edge of being field. And I watched him for ten
- 26:42Speaker 1: minutes as he kept working closer and closer to me,
- 26:45Speaker 1: and he was completely distracted by eating those beans. He
- 26:50Speaker 1: wasn't aware of me at all, And there was good
- 26:52Speaker 1: reason for him to have been aware of me, because
- 26:54Speaker 1: it's a spot work we all often killed deer from.
- 26:58Speaker 1: So it's really interesting to see that it was very
- 27:00Speaker 1: windy day, and I think that had something to do
- 27:02Speaker 1: with it too, that you know, he could probably couldn't
- 27:04Speaker 1: hear much now. Obviously to stay like Wisconsin big egg
- 27:09Speaker 1: is really important to focus on in December. But what
- 27:12Speaker 1: are some natural food sources, Doug that you've noticed that
- 27:15Speaker 1: white tails key in on this time of year. Well,
- 27:19Speaker 1: we don't have any snow on the ground right now,
- 27:21Speaker 1: and we're seeing a lot of activity late in the day, um,
- 27:27Speaker 1: where the deer are picking up on you know, the
- 27:29Speaker 1: green that's on the edge of the fields, and then
- 27:32Speaker 1: they're in those brush and bottoms and areas where they
- 27:35Speaker 1: can do a lot of browsing as well. Are you
- 27:39Speaker 1: seeing any signmaking right now on those field edges? I
- 27:46Speaker 1: not a lot. I mean you'll see that a scrape
- 27:48Speaker 1: will get tended, like a hubscrape will will have some
- 27:51Speaker 1: activity in it. But um, from my cameras and stuff,
- 27:54Speaker 1: I'm not seeing a whole lot of of scrapes and
- 27:58Speaker 1: and that sort of thing following with sconsin's gun season.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Do you notice the shift in bedding it all on
- 28:02Speaker 1: your property? Well, and not so much with the does. Um.
- 28:08Speaker 1: The antalyst here seemed to like those those thermal covers,
- 28:12Speaker 1: like we've got some pine plantations and stuff like that.
- 28:15Speaker 1: But um, we do certainly notice that the bucks are
- 28:18Speaker 1: a little more Uh, they're down in bottoms and heidi holes,
- 28:23Speaker 1: and you know they're they're looking for security. If you're
- 28:27Speaker 1: doing a morning set up in early December, what does
- 28:30Speaker 1: that look like? I know, obviously your evening setups gonna
- 28:32Speaker 1: be looking over a food source, but what does the
- 28:34Speaker 1: morning set up look like for you in Wisconsin? Well,
- 28:38Speaker 1: we had a successful muzzleloader hunt yesterday morning, and my
- 28:43Speaker 1: friend Eric Cannony and his wife were up and uh
- 28:48Speaker 1: the dose, dose and funds came out of hardwoods and
- 28:52Speaker 1: they were heading into bedding in a pine plantation. They
- 28:55Speaker 1: caught him in between, and we were set up for that.
- 28:58Speaker 1: If you got to choose your ideal weather forecast for December, dog,
- 29:02Speaker 1: what is it that you'd be looking for. Well, I'd
- 29:06Speaker 1: like a little less wind. I'd like to have some
- 29:08Speaker 1: snow on the ground and those temperatures, um that we
- 29:12Speaker 1: can all stand. I'm not a guy who likes to
- 29:15Speaker 1: have it real cold. Um. If I could have snow
- 29:18Speaker 1: on the ground and temperatures in the twenties and low thirties,
- 29:21Speaker 1: I'd be real happy going forward. Then, in the next
- 29:24Speaker 1: week or so, what do you think that buckettv is
- 29:26Speaker 1: going to be on a scale of one to ten
- 29:28Speaker 1: in Wisconsin. I think it's gonna still be down in
- 29:33Speaker 1: that three to four range. But with a few days
- 29:36Speaker 1: of calming, um, we may uh pick up again. You know,
- 29:41Speaker 1: another another round of of breeding happening here in December. Also,
- 29:46Speaker 1: all right, Doug, congrats again on the great buck. Thanks
- 29:49Speaker 1: for joining me. Thank you, Spencer, happy to be here
- 29:53Speaker 1: all right and joining us on the line. Last is
- 29:55Speaker 1: Vince Bodyatta from the Chasing Public YouTube channel in Tennessee. Now, Vincent, Tennessee.
- 30:00Speaker 1: What would you say the buck activity has been lately
- 30:02Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. Uh, lately, I
- 30:05Speaker 1: would say it's probably around anywhere between a six to seven. UM,
- 30:12Speaker 1: I would definitely say it's it's past the peak breeding portion. UM.
- 30:18Speaker 1: But no question, you can definitely catch a cruiser person
- 30:22Speaker 1: around right now. Now, you just killed a great buck
- 30:25Speaker 1: on Thanksgiving a day tell us about that hunt. Why
- 30:27Speaker 1: were you in that area? And why did that buck
- 30:29Speaker 1: want to be there? Uh? Yeah, it was man, That's
- 30:36Speaker 1: That's definitely what I'll never forget. UM. You know that
- 30:40Speaker 1: spot we actually scouted really hard during the summertime, and uh,
- 30:44Speaker 1: we had a lot of good a lot of good
- 30:46Speaker 1: bucks around. UM. It looked like it had just not
- 30:50Speaker 1: really been that pressured. UM. Didn't see a lot of
- 30:53Speaker 1: human sign or anything like that. UM. So it's definitely
- 30:56Speaker 1: a spot that we were keeping our eye on. UM.
- 30:59Speaker 1: And it had a lot of good just natural food
- 31:01Speaker 1: sources around there. So I knew it was going to
- 31:03Speaker 1: be a spot UM that I could pick up on
- 31:05Speaker 1: the latter half of the season, and UM, I just thought,
- 31:10Speaker 1: you know, it was Thanksgiving Day, it had been raining
- 31:12Speaker 1: all day. I figured, you know, there's probably wasn't any
- 31:15Speaker 1: pressure there in the morning. UM, and we just decided
- 31:19Speaker 1: to hang out there, and you know, whitetailed. Luck, it
- 31:24Speaker 1: just happened. It was it just it just turned on
- 31:27Speaker 1: in the right way. Earlier in the season, we did
- 31:29Speaker 1: hunt that spot a few times, but we did end
- 31:32Speaker 1: up having a lot of pressure there, so we kind
- 31:33Speaker 1: of backed off it. And and now it just seems
- 31:35Speaker 1: like they just kind of filtered back in in late November,
- 31:38Speaker 1: early December and Tennessee. Do you notice better movement in
- 31:42Speaker 1: the morning or evening? I would say, if you have
- 31:44Speaker 1: the food sources in the evening, UM, if not, then
- 31:48Speaker 1: I would probably hunt the mornings right now. And what
- 31:51Speaker 1: food sources are relevant right now in that part of
- 31:53Speaker 1: the country. Anything green, just natural brows, you know, clover
- 31:59Speaker 1: that type of up. If you have the hot the
- 32:02Speaker 1: um the hot acorn spots so there's still acorns left over,
- 32:06Speaker 1: I would definitely be on those. UM. But anything green
- 32:11Speaker 1: you mentioned it had been raining when you killed that buck.
- 32:13Speaker 1: What is the idea weather that you're looking for in
- 32:16Speaker 1: December in Tennessee. In December in Tennessee, I'm looking for
- 32:21Speaker 1: where you have, um, like a three or four days
- 32:24Speaker 1: stretch of just constant temperature and then if it gets
- 32:28Speaker 1: you know, even a drop of you know, seven to
- 32:32Speaker 1: ten degrees being this far south, it's enough to be
- 32:36Speaker 1: considered like a cold front or a cold snap. Um.
- 32:40Speaker 1: And that really seems to be to be putting deer
- 32:42Speaker 1: on the feet. If you're doing some in season scouting
- 32:45Speaker 1: this time of year, what are some things that you're
- 32:47Speaker 1: looking for. I'm looking for big tracks, big tracks, fresh tracks, um.
- 32:53Speaker 1: And I'm looking for the actual concentrations of deer now
- 32:57Speaker 1: that we're already past the actual peak reading season or
- 33:01Speaker 1: a portion of the season, I'm looking for those concentrations
- 33:05Speaker 1: to do. I feel like if I can find those
- 33:07Speaker 1: concentrations to deer, then you know, as far as success, right,
- 33:12Speaker 1: I'll just end up being more successful just in general
- 33:14Speaker 1: as far as being able to harvest more meat. Historically,
- 33:17Speaker 1: when we get beyond that peak breading day, what do
- 33:20Speaker 1: you notice for signmaking in Tennessee. I do notice once
- 33:23Speaker 1: we start coming into December, Um that I will start
- 33:29Speaker 1: to get more and more bucks coming back through and
- 33:32Speaker 1: checking on their on their normal scrape patterns. Um. You
- 33:38Speaker 1: know there's a portion of there through November where they
- 33:40Speaker 1: just stopped. Once you come into December, they do start
- 33:43Speaker 1: checking those. Um. But I really focus more on the
- 33:47Speaker 1: food side and then the signmaking to be honest, once
- 33:50Speaker 1: it comes into December. Going forward, then in the next
- 33:53Speaker 1: week or so, what do you think that budget activity
- 33:55Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one to
- 33:57Speaker 1: ten in Tennessee, I'd say it's probably anywhere between afford
- 34:04Speaker 1: six and a half. There's better parts of Tennessee where
- 34:07Speaker 1: it is very mountainous and I'm not too familiar on
- 34:11Speaker 1: that side, but where I'm at in middle Tennessee where
- 34:14Speaker 1: the train is a little more approachable. Um, it just
- 34:18Speaker 1: seems during that time, once we into December, if you
- 34:21Speaker 1: can find the concentration to deer, you're still gonna get
- 34:24Speaker 1: your good boys. You may not get that one slammer
- 34:26Speaker 1: that comes through, but you're still gonna have quality deer
- 34:29Speaker 1: that comes through our advanced Congrats again on the great Deer.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me all right, man, appreciate the suncer
