Transcript
- 0:16Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:19I'm your host Bubba Starts, and with me today from Smart Choice Entertainment, my brother,
- 0:23Dan Smith.
- 0:24Dan, welcome to the show, man.
- 0:25Thanks for having me, bro.
- 0:27Yeah.
- 0:28I appreciate you taking a little time out of your busy touring schedule.
- 0:32Your band bound and determined, just getting back from Nashville recently.
- 0:37Some great stuff going on on there.
- 0:39But we're really here to talk today, about what you're doing with Smart Choice Entertainment,
- 0:43namely the Ag City Music Festival coming up here soon.
- 0:47We'll throw up that banner.
- 0:49June.
- 0:50Correct?
- 0:51Yes, sir.
- 0:52That's gonna be a blast, man.
- 0:54And you've got a lot of your artists from your company that are on there.
- 0:58But before we get into all that and talking to just wanna get a little bit of your backstory,
- 1:02and I'll let people get to know you a little bit.
- 1:05Well, you know, I started out, I guess, when I was about 19 years old, just picking up the
- 1:11guitar.
- 1:12And, roughly eight years ago, I had a guy I went to high school with approached me about,
- 1:17getting out and playing some acoustic duo type stuff, and that just kinda developed into, you
- 1:22know, putting a full band together, bound and determined.
- 1:25And, you know, in doing so, just kinda, you know, contacting venues about booking, you
- 1:32know, my particular band.
- 1:33Well, you know, we kinda book up about six months to a year in advance.
- 1:37And, so I get phone calls from venues wanting to book us.
- 1:41And, you know, if we were already booked, I started trying to help some of the other
- 1:46artists that I knew, pick up some gigs, get in those venues, and that just kinda evolved into,
- 1:53developing Smart Choice Entertainment.
- 1:56You know, we have gone from just kinda helping some other artists, you know, fill some slots
- 2:02to actually where we're at now.
- 2:04We're we're a full festival design and management company.
- 2:09We're doing festivals, providing production stage light sound.
- 2:14We can do food trucks and vendors, kids zones with bounce houses and face painters and all
- 2:22that kind of stuff.
- 2:23So kind of a one stop shop for fairs and festivals and concerts, and, you know, it's,
- 2:30we're just having fun doing it, man.
- 2:33Yeah.
- 2:33And I feel like not not a ton of musicians kind of fall into that, but your background as a
- 2:40successful business owner and all of those skills bringing from that side kind of laid you
- 2:46perfectly in this position to be a a little bit of that business mind behind the artist and now
- 2:53behind these incredible festivals like Ag City Music Festival happening in June.
- 2:59Yeah.
- 3:00Absolutely.
- 3:01You know, I've I've owned a security company for twenty one years.
- 3:05And, you know, I've I've taken the lumps of, you know, the OJT on the job training.
- 3:11You know, my my background is sales and marketing, and that's, I think one of the
- 3:16things that's allowed, you know, the success of not only my my personal band, but the business
- 3:21as a whole.
- 3:23That's one of the things that I'm really trying to help young artists that are trying to get
- 3:27from, you know, their practice rooms to a local stage and then growing to the fairs and
- 3:33festivals and corporate gigs level.
- 3:35And, you know, there's a lot of really, really good talent out there that nobody's ever heard
- 3:39of.
- 3:40And I've asked myself why.
- 3:42And it just boils down to having that sales ability to be told no a bunch of times and and
- 3:48keep going.
- 3:49And, you know, ultimately, it's all a numbers game.
- 3:52You know, the more people that we contact and talk to and the networks that we create, that's
- 3:57actually what catapults people to those bigger and better stages.
- 4:01So, just just trying to do my part to try to help out other artists, man.
- 4:07I think a lot of people would look at the success of bound and determined, and I know
- 4:11that you've won Kansas City's best, you know, cover band and and a lot of a lot of awards
- 4:17over the past several years.
- 4:19And they just see those, and it's like, man, all he does is hit home runs.
- 4:23Right?
- 4:23And they don't see the time in the batting cage, if you will, to keep the baseball
- 4:27references going, the swings and misses, the 100 unanswered emails that you got when you
- 4:33were reaching out early.
- 4:34And all the success that you're having now is really attributed to the, you know, the six
- 4:40prior years that it was reaching out and being told, well, you guys just aren't right now.
- 4:45You just aren't right.
- 4:46And then as you continue to raise the profile of the band, all of a sudden, you're not having
- 4:52to make the phone calls.
- 4:53People are calling you, which just kind of turned into the natural evolution of smart
- 4:57choice entertainment and, you know, a lot of a lot of your success, is attributed to things
- 5:04that nobody would ever see.
- 5:06Well, that's it.
- 5:06I mean, no no matter how we look at it, it's all a grind.
- 5:10You know?
- 5:10And being able to keep your head down, stay focused, stay motivated, don't take the
- 5:17negatives to heart.
- 5:18You know?
- 5:19You know, the thing about music is there's so many different genres because people have what
- 5:25they like.
- 5:26And maybe we don't check all the boxes, but we do check a lot of the boxes.
- 5:30And it's just important to make sure you're putting out a good product, a good service, and
- 5:36making sure you're staying professional and, deliver on what you say, have, have some
- 5:42integrity, be a man of your word, and, treat people with respect.
- 5:46And I think with all of that, if you can focus on those things, it all just kinda lines up.
- 5:51And, you know, you got gotta be willing to work hard.
- 5:54You know?
- 5:54They might see us on stage for three hours, but they don't see the eight hours leading up to it
- 5:58and the drive time and all the time in rehearsal and all those different types of
- 6:03things.
- 6:03And I don't think I've ever been a part of an industry that has so many variables that have
- 6:09to line up for success.
- 6:11And, you know, it just comes down to being willing to work hard and and not give up.
- 6:18Well, and speaking of things lining up, you guys just got back from a big trip down to
- 6:23Nashville.
- 6:24You were part of a showcase at Tootsies, the world famous Tootsies.
- 6:30Talk a little bit about that experience and then what kinda came from that moment and now
- 6:34leading into, hopefully, a lot more trips back to Music City.
- 6:40Well, you know, it was, we were invited down.
- 6:44This again, the networking aspect of it.
- 6:46We were invited down by a label, and they have this process, if you want to be a musician in
- 6:54Downtown Nashville.
- 6:56You go to Tootsies.
- 6:57You do this little showcase.
- 6:58If they like you, they invite you to Monday at Kid Rocks, to where you can actually get up and
- 7:04play two or three songs for industry professionals.
- 7:08Actually, the a gentleman that was kind of heading that up used to be Garth Brooks' bass
- 7:15player and has worked with a lot of other a list artists.
- 7:18And so you go up there.
- 7:20It's all industry people and other musicians.
- 7:23You do your thing.
- 7:24And, you know, fortunately for us, we were told that, you know, there's not a lot of bands that
- 7:30come to Nashville and do what we did.
- 7:32And they're looking at bringing us down, having us play a few shows on Broadway, and they're
- 7:39they're talking some bigger and better things after that as long as people, you know, like
- 7:42what we do.
- 7:43So it was a great experience.
- 7:46I'd recommend it to anybody that's trying to, you know, make Nashville home and and kinda
- 7:53continue to climb the ladder.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:56And having been in, Kid Rock's big ass honky tonk, while I was there back in last November.
- 8:03You guys are such a perfect fit for that main stage and what they're trying to bring on that
- 8:09knowing a little bit about your band and your set list.
- 8:12They're really riding that line between rock and country.
- 8:15It's not, you know, like Robert's Western World where you're getting very traditional country
- 8:23music, country and western music up there.
- 8:25It is very much, what I would say, the newer kind of country genre.
- 8:32Right?
- 8:32A lot more rock and roll influences.
- 8:34You're gonna hear a lot of rock and roll covers while you're in there as well.
- 8:38It's crazy for people who haven't been to Nashville recently to really understand what
- 8:42the scene is like down there.
- 8:44It seems like all the bars are at least three stories tall and maybe a rooftop as well.
- 8:49When it's rocking and rolling, it's it's a band on every level, and you kinda start from the
- 8:54top and work your way down.
- 8:56Right?
- 8:56Newer bands getting an opportunity to start in some of the the, you know, the 3rd story bars
- 9:01in the middle of the day when there's really not much of a crowd, you know, depending on the
- 9:07day of the week, and you eventually kinda grind it out to that.
- 9:11Or you can do what you guys have done and grow a name for yourself where you're at.
- 9:16Raise the profile of your band first and then go to Nashville or get invited to take part in
- 9:23some of those things.
- 9:24But you don't have to go and necessarily kinda slave it out playing for tips on the rooftop
- 9:30bar starting out to be able to get those opportunities.
- 9:34There's different ways.
- 9:35And I think, what Bound and Determined has done is a great a great example of how to grow at
- 9:41home that you are ready for those bigger opportunities in some of the, you know, music
- 9:46centers of the world.
- 9:48Yeah.
- 9:49I, you know, I would say that anybody that has the the want to to go to Nashville I mean,
- 9:55let's face it.
- 9:56It's the Mecca of music and especially country music.
- 10:00But you kinda hit the nail on the head.
- 10:02What they're looking for, you know, they have this big list of the most played cover songs in
- 10:08Downtown Nashville.
- 10:10When they sent it to us, I went, oh, well, like, we're already doing 75% of the songs on
- 10:14the list.
- 10:16So, you know, as an artist and a musician, you know, sometimes we play songs that, you know,
- 10:21we've played a thousand times, and we can really care less whether we play them again or
- 10:26not, but it's not about us.
- 10:27It's about the fans.
- 10:29As it was explained to us down there, you never know what song was maybe your dad's favorite
- 10:35song or your grandpa's favorite song.
- 10:37So, you know, when you're standing in that crowd at Nashville and somebody plays that
- 10:42song, it takes that fan back to something that really truly means something to them.
- 10:47And, you know, so that's that's what I tell the band all the time.
- 10:51I'm like, you know, it's not about us guys.
- 10:53It's about putting smiles on the faces of the people in the crowd, making them happy, you
- 10:58know, making them feel something.
- 11:00So it's important that every song, every time, we have to do the best job that we can to make
- 11:06sure that, you know, those people are having a good time.
- 11:10So very important.
- 11:12I think that's something that gets gets lost on a lot of artists who are songwriters and and
- 11:18really wanna be known for their original music, which is fine.
- 11:23And and I'm guilty of this myself that I wanna play the things that I want to, but I've always
- 11:28been very cognizant of the fact that, like, you have to be able to bring that crowd in.
- 11:33And it's funny when I was in Nashville and I was at Kid Rock's place, I started on the 3rd
- 11:38Floor.
- 11:39We were at a private event for a racing outfit, and they they started I I they played a medley.
- 11:46As I'm going down three different bands, we're playing three different songs that I play in a
- 11:50medley.
- 11:51For me, I think it was, like, started with, you know, fishing in the dark up top that I heard
- 11:56what I got, and then I heard the joker mixed with, the, the, Shaggy song, Angel, when they
- 12:04redid that one.
- 12:05Right?
- 12:05And, like, I'm walking down.
- 12:07I can't help grinning where I'm like, my my band and my show would do okay in Nashville.
- 12:12Right?
- 12:12Like, I'm on the right track to do that, but I didn't necessarily have to move there to figure
- 12:18that out.
- 12:19Right?
- 12:19I didn't have to go there and pay seven times more in rent than I do at my mortgage in South
- 12:25Dakota, to to go down there and figure it out.
- 12:28And if I wanted to, I feel like there's an avenue for my band or other bands that want to
- 12:34go to Nashville and to get some time there.
- 12:37Because like you said, they're looking for some fresh meat and to go through these cycles.
- 12:42And, yes, these residencies are fine, but all the bands that are playing in Nashville are
- 12:47trying to get out of Nashville and out on the road.
- 12:50So it's this weird dichotomy that that we're in.
- 12:53Like, all the bands on the outside are trying to get in, and the bands on the inside are
- 12:57trying to get out.
- 12:58And I feel like guys like you and I who have really great connections and out here in the
- 13:04Midwest, especially, to some good paying gigs that can actually help bands, maybe not booking
- 13:09an entire tour for someone, but maybe two or three dates throughout our respective states or
- 13:14or regions to keep them on the road and maybe keep them floating along.
- 13:18And I feel like that's why, you know, you and I get together so well is that we're both not
- 13:23only capable of doing it, but extremely willing to do that both with the scene projects and
- 13:28Smart Choice Entertainment.
- 13:30Absolutely.
- 13:31You know, it's it it really is all about the grind.
- 13:35You know?
- 13:36You you kinda touched on, you know, original artists, and, you know, we have spent you know,
- 13:42we've had some change in the band, but we spent, you know, a good portion of this winter
- 13:46writing some original music, which has been absolutely a blast.
- 13:51And, you know, things are going well there.
- 13:53But, you know, the the average listener, you know, they have their favorites.
- 13:58And, you know, we we've gotta make sure we're playing those.
- 14:01And, you know, you take your a list artist out there that are on tour.
- 14:05Yeah.
- 14:05They're playing their songs, but they usually pepper in some of the covers as well.
- 14:09So it's important that, you know, we're we're playing a little bit of everything.
- 14:15And, yeah, we wanna get our original music out there, but, you know, I've been predominantly
- 14:21in a cover band my whole career.
- 14:23And, you know, that's that's what people are you know, we're live jukeboxes, basically.
- 14:28And, you know, because, you know, we're not asking people to throw don't know.
- 14:33It's a little different nowadays, but the only way was throw a quarter in the jukebox and play
- 14:36a song or a dollar bill and play three songs.
- 14:39And, you know, so our tip bucket is the coin slot, basically, and we just keep on rocking.
- 14:45Yeah.
- 14:46And having heard, some of the demos, I I guess you would say, of some of the bound and
- 14:52determined originals that are gonna be coming out.
- 14:54I'm really excited about this next phase of your band in particular, and it it's exciting.
- 15:01And no matter what age you are, you know, I would consider us both kinda OGs of the scene
- 15:07at this point.
- 15:09And, you know, I've been doing this since I was a teenager playing in bands and on stage and
- 15:13all kinds of different, size venues from, you know, festivals and amphitheaters, to those bar
- 15:20gigs where there might be 12 people in the crowd.
- 15:23Right?
- 15:23And I get so much gratification still playing music.
- 15:28I don't see myself ever stopping, and I'm kinda riding a different wave now.
- 15:32Growing our platform here, no different than Smart Choice, and the festivals that you're
- 15:37doing, may may overtake sometimes, what you're doing with the band.
- 15:42And we finding those that that rhythm.
- 15:45Right?
- 15:45Obviously, the summertime is is the busy time for getting out and playing music as more
- 15:50venues are available because you have these outdoor stages and play you know, festivals
- 15:55going on.
- 15:56And then when you come back, the wintertime is a great time to really hone in with the band
- 16:01writing new material.
- 16:02And, I think that the future of both Bound and Determined and Smart Choice are incredibly
- 16:08bright and glad to be here for it.
- 16:11Dan, I would love to kinda touch a little bit more on the AgCity Music Festival, going on
- 16:18June this year.
- 16:21You guys are celebrating America's two hundred and fiftieth a little bit before the fourth.
- 16:27I know you have friends in service of heroes.
- 16:29Our friend Paul Choppa and his organization, FISH for short, involved as well.
- 16:35So tell us a little bit more about the festival and what people can expect.
- 16:39Ma'am, we've got, you know, it's Father's Day weekend.
- 16:42So one of the things that we really wanted to do is we wanted to make sure that it's family
- 16:47friendly.
- 16:48We're touching on the two two hundred and fiftieth birthday of the country, doing some
- 16:52donations to a wonderful charity.
- 16:55But we've got you know, on Friday, we've got two great tribute bands.
- 17:00We've got a Molly Hatchet tribute band flirting with Molly, and then Edge of Forever, who is a
- 17:05Leonard Skinner tribute band.
- 17:07Then on Saturday, we're doing a tractor pull early in the morning.
- 17:12About 01:00, we're gonna have an all veteran skydiving team drop in with the American flag.
- 17:19Damian Gunn, who's the first on stage, is gonna sing the national anthem for us.
- 17:23Damian's a great artist, been touring the country.
- 17:27Savannah Chestnut, who was on The Voice.
- 17:30My band, Bound and Determines Plan.
- 17:33Noe Palmer, who's a Nashville recording artist, got videos on CMT and all that kind of stuff.
- 17:39And then headlining the show, we've got Tate Stevens.
- 17:43Tate won the x factor season two back in 2012.
- 17:47And so a lot of local homegrown talent this year.
- 17:51And, you know, gonna have a little side stage as the main stage switches over.
- 17:56We got Michael Pierce, Josh Collins, and Jillian Riscoe will be doing solo acoustic sets
- 18:03while that's happening.
- 18:04So just you know, it's gonna be an awesome time.
- 18:08Family friendly.
- 18:09The kids phones fun zone's gonna have, you know, 10 or 12 bounce houses, face painters,
- 18:14fire breathers, foam pits, you know, dump tank, all kinds of stuff for the kids.
- 18:19And we're just looking forward to celebrating.
- 18:24We're donating $5 from every ticket sold to friends in service and heroes.
- 18:30For for people out there that are prayer warriors, please give Paul his family prayers.
- 18:35He just lost his dad a few days ago.
- 18:37I have talked to him.
- 18:39He's he's doing okay.
- 18:41But, you know, I lost my dad a couple years ago, so I know know what he's going through and
- 18:47love Paul to death.
- 18:48And what him and his organization are doing for veterans is just off the charts.
- 18:53So we appreciate, you know, having them involved, and it's just gonna be an awesome
- 18:58weekend, man.
- 18:59We're praying for good weather and just great music and family fun.
- 19:05Yep.
- 19:06Sounds like a heck of a time, Dan, and I may have to rearrange some of my travel plans, to
- 19:11try to see if I can get down there.
- 19:14It's, gonna be a great time, and we're really appreciative, of you, this monumental task that
- 19:20you've taken on.
- 19:21And I know you've got a great team around you that are helping to bring this all to fruition,
- 19:26but it's incredible.
- 19:27And I really look forward to the future of not just AgCity, but, a lot of other events that
- 19:32you're putting together as well.
- 19:34This is, in many ways, just the start for what Smart Choice is kind of evolving into.
- 19:40And really happy not just to know you, but to call you a friend and a brother, and I can't
- 19:46wait to continue working together for many years to come.
- 19:49Heck yeah, man.
- 19:50Yeah.
- 19:50We're we're actually working on another one.
- 19:52It's called the horsepower music festival that'll be going on in September down at the
- 19:57Ozarks International Raceway at Lake Of The Ozarks.
- 20:01Recently met with Lucas Oil Speedway.
- 20:03They're wanting to do some you know, an event there at their place.
- 20:06And, you know, so we're we're definitely moving in that direction of, you know, bigger and
- 20:11better and just continuing the growth, and and I owe it to my team.
- 20:16You know, without them, I'd never be able to do some of the things that I'm doing.
- 20:21By the way, I've already cleared.
- 20:23You've got a press pass waiting on you for the Ag City Festival.
- 20:26So if you can get down here, we'd love to have you here, brother.
- 20:30Well, I would appreciate that, man.
- 20:32Bring the cameras and do interviews with all of our artists and capturing that moment so we can
- 20:37promote it all for next year.
- 20:39I think it's gonna be an incredible time.
- 20:41So, Dan, appreciate you.
- 20:43Everyone can go to smartchoiceent.com for more information on the festival and on Smart
- 20:51Choice.
- 20:52If you're an artist or an entertainer, I highly suggest that you connect with Dan.
- 20:57You never know when a gig might float down the river that might be a perfect fit for you guys.
- 21:02So you've been a blessing to me.
- 21:05I have you to thank for the first gig I ever played in Missouri, and I just really
- 21:10appreciate everything that you're doing for artists and for communities as well.
- 21:15I I think it's really awesome.
- 21:16And, obviously, our veterans are so important to us.
- 21:19Big prayers to Paul Chapa and his family, an incredible human being, and, our our hearts are
- 21:25with him and his family at this time as well.
- 21:27Dan Smith, thank you for taking some time for me today, and thank you for being part of the
- 21:32scene.
- 21:33Well, thank you, brother.
- 21:35And we have another website.
- 21:37It's www.agcitymusicfestival.com.
- 21:41That's we where can get all that all the information for the Ag City, purchase tickets,
- 21:45all that kind of stuff.
- 21:46And, man, thank you for what you're doing, you know, helping another platform for us musicians
- 21:53and industry people to to get the word out.
- 21:56So thanks a lot, man.
- 21:57I appreciate you.
