Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: The public service cuts didn't come out of nowhere
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We got the inevitable grinch headlines from the media yesterday,
- 0:03Speaker 1: powered by union panic. The public service knew this was coming.
- 0:07Speaker 1: They should have Judith Colins, Nicola Willis, Sir Brian Roach,
- 0:10Speaker 1: I've all been talking about it since they got into office,
- 0:12Speaker 1: so it's not shocking. It's also not a done deal yet.
- 0:16Speaker 1: All that's really happened in the final leg of this
- 0:19Speaker 1: government's current term is a few letters have been posted
- 0:21Speaker 1: to some chief executives. Did you give us a mood board?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Do us a mood board on some cuts to staffing.
- 0:28Speaker 1: The savings will be banked, but there is no guarantee
- 0:30Speaker 1: any of this will actually happen. Winston Peters was right
- 0:33Speaker 1: about that yesterday. That's for an election to decide. Back
- 0:37Speaker 1: to the unions and the opposition complaints for a second.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Two basic questions. If these proposed cuts are so bad,
- 0:44Speaker 1: so evil, so destructive, so armageddon, why was a workforce
- 0:49Speaker 1: equivalent to about one percent of the population.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Allowed under Halen Clark? Was she and evil grinch like Nicola?
- 0:57Speaker 1: And how can you say the publics will suffer, that
- 1:00Speaker 1: we will suffer, the sky will fall in the clouds
- 1:02Speaker 1: will gather when you know not what jobs are actually
- 1:06Speaker 1: being cut. Yet, how are you to know there aren't
- 1:09Speaker 1: back off a savings to be made. We're told the
- 1:11Speaker 1: money will instead go towards the front line in health
- 1:14Speaker 1: and education.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Wonderful? Should we not celebrate?
- 1:17Speaker 1: To be fair, the same argument could be tipped on
- 1:20Speaker 1: its head without knowing what's being cut. How can the
- 1:23Speaker 1: government claim that no services will be impacted. The proof
- 1:26Speaker 1: of that, though, will be in the eating of the pudding,
- 1:29Speaker 1: as the saying goes. But remember, the job of figuring
- 1:32Speaker 1: out which jobs are for the acts without affecting us,
- 1:36Speaker 1: the taxpayers, is in the hands of the very people
- 1:38Speaker 1: whose jobs are on the line in the first place.
- 1:41Speaker 1: If we are to trust them, as the unions in
- 1:44Speaker 1: the opposition clearly do, should we not trust that they
- 1:47Speaker 1: will know how to be surgical and only trim the
- 1:51Speaker 1: fat and not the bone. For more from early edition
