- 0:02Speaker 2: It's 10 o'clock.
- 0:02Speaker 3: Do you care where your parents are?
- 0:04Speaker 4: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:06Speaker 4: Picture Association of America.

- 0:20Speaker 2: Emergency alert.
- 0:20Speaker 6: Defense Corps forces reported just moments ago. This is not
- 0:26Speaker 6: a drill.
- 0:27Speaker 7: Repeat, this is not the drill.
- 0:29Speaker 8: At this time, we are requesting the immediate and orderly evacuation.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Of the vicinity.
- 0:36Speaker 9: The Coast Guard and the Navy have been alerted and
- 0:38Speaker 9: are standing by on Eastern Sea.
- 0:40Speaker 7: And it continues to burn out of control.
- 0:43Speaker 6: It has been regular.
- 0:44Speaker 10: Every five to ten minutes, there has been another convoy
- 0:47Speaker 10: of units.
- 0:48Speaker 11: Fire companies, paramedics... A citywide emergency has been declared.

- 0:58Speaker 6: Air defense warning read. It's time for Movie Meltdown's Attack
- 1:06Speaker 6: of the Killers soundtrack.
- 1:08Speaker 10: The live transmission has begun, and we're into the final
- 1:12Speaker 10: hour of hell. What's up and welcome to Movie Mountdown's
- 1:34Speaker 10: Attack of the Killers soundtrack. I am Brian.
- 1:36Speaker 7: I'm Jacqueline.
- 1:37Speaker 12: And I'm Phillip.
- 1:38Speaker 10: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:40Speaker 10: Grindel's House of Fun. That's what I called it last time.
- 1:44Speaker 10: I think we went through several other options.
- 1:46Speaker 7: No, it's the most fitting. This is her house. And
- 1:50Speaker 7: it is fun.
- 1:51Speaker 10: You're lucky she let you stay. Yeah. So we are
- 1:55Speaker 10: back for another musical adventure. And again, I say it
- 2:00Speaker 10: the last several years, it was like maybe the most
- 2:03Speaker 10: functional episode we do because you always go blindly into
- 2:07Speaker 10: the Academy Awards or most people. I guess there's a
- 2:10Speaker 10: handful out there that actually like put effort into it
- 2:12Speaker 10: and try to like do their research ahead of time.
- 2:15Speaker 10: But I'd say most people get there the night of
- 2:18Speaker 10: and go, oh, that got nominated. So much like, you know,
- 2:21Speaker 10: when you, get the nominations for the best films and
- 2:25Speaker 10: you're just like, oh, I guess I should make an
- 2:26Speaker 10: effort to go see that. This way, you can knock
- 2:30Speaker 10: out all of the song and score in one shot
- 2:33Speaker 10: with this episode. We just line them up for you.
- 2:36Speaker 10: You can actually experience all of them and then decide
- 2:40Speaker 10: for yourself. And then it doesn't make any difference because
- 2:43Speaker 10: the Academy votes for whatever the hell they want anyway.
- 2:45Speaker 10: But at least you'll go in educated. Isn't that what
- 2:48Speaker 10: it's all about?
- 2:48Speaker 2: Sure.
- 2:49Speaker 7: And then you can be more angry about choices that
- 2:51Speaker 7: you disagree with.
- 2:52Speaker 10: I mean, we were going to be anyway, but angry,
- 2:56Speaker 10: yelling at the TV. Isn't that what everybody does when.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They watch this?
- 2:59Speaker 12: That's what I do, yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah. All right.
- 3:04Speaker 10: We're starting with the one we're going to see a lot.
- 3:09Speaker 7: La la.
- 3:10Speaker 10: La la la la la. Yeah. We are going to
- 3:12Speaker 10: go back and forth, so that way we can mix it.
- 3:14Speaker 6: Up a little bit.
- 3:14Speaker 10: We won't do tons of score all in a row.
- 3:18Speaker 10: I figure we'll pepper in some singings along the way. So. First,
- 3:22Speaker 10: we'll start with the first nominee here for Best Original Score.
- 3:25Speaker 10: And it is the score for La La Land, which
- 3:28Speaker 10: is composed and orchestrated by Justin Hurwitz. So this first
- 3:32Speaker 10: track is me and Sebastian's theme. Parentheses, late for dinner.
- 3:37Speaker 10: Close parentheses. Don't leave that shit open. And yeah, this
- 3:41Speaker 10: is sort of one of the main themes. They're all
- 3:44Speaker 10: kind of the main.
- 3:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Amen.
- 5:11Speaker 10: So I think my question is after listening to this
- 5:15Speaker 10: song or any song, specifically this song is like, how
- 5:19Speaker 10: does this not win the Oscar for best score really?
- 5:22Speaker 10: Because number one, it's got that catchy little piano hook
- 5:26Speaker 10: at the beginning, which is the theme and it kicks
- 5:29Speaker 10: in throughout the overall score. But on top of that,
- 5:32Speaker 10: it just becomes a big old school Hollywood musical midway
- 5:36Speaker 10: into that song. And I'm like, this is what they love.
- 5:40Speaker 10: Like this is them.
- 5:40Speaker 7: It's like the old fashioned kind of score, like the
- 5:44Speaker 7: big sweeping strings and clarinets and all that stuff.
- 5:47Speaker 10: And like sort of, it's a weird mixture because it's
- 5:51Speaker 10: very upbeat, but it's like through the entirety of that
- 5:54Speaker 10: story and the score, there's this weird melancholy that runs
- 5:57Speaker 10: through it. And that's kind of old time musicals too.
- 6:00Speaker 10: It's like they had a lot of weird, sad aspects
- 6:04Speaker 10: to them but they were still really singing and dancing
- 6:06Speaker 10: and upbeat for no good reason sometimes so i don't
- 6:09Speaker 10: know i think it's a nice mixture of the old
- 6:11Speaker 10: school hollywood stuff and i feel like much.
- 6:14Speaker 7: Like yeah but it's not like super cheerful all.
- 6:17Speaker 10: The time no yeah i think overall it's not at
- 6:20Speaker 10: all like i feel like the stuff that works best
- 6:23Speaker 10: and we'll get to that in song too is just
- 6:25Speaker 10: like the the stuff that is a little more melancholy
- 6:29Speaker 10: and i think that To me, that totally tips the
- 6:32Speaker 10: scales as you watch the movie. It all is a
- 6:36Speaker 10: little sad and overwhelmed with regret and choices not taken.
- 6:42Speaker 10: I think all that comes through even in just the
- 6:45Speaker 10: musical track. It's a good representation of the movie. It's
- 6:49Speaker 10: so old school Hollywood, much like the nominations. They love
- 6:55Speaker 10: this kind of movie. They love their own. Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 7: Right.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Themselves.
- 6:58Speaker 10: So like they want to do old school Hollywood stuff.
- 7:02Speaker 10: And this is like definitely steps up to the plate.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 12: I definitely felt that when I heard the song. This
- 7:07Speaker 12: is the nice almost like in a West Side Story.
- 7:09Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 12: Type tradition. And it's a good way to start it off.
- 7:14Speaker 10: It just is a perfect representation of what they want.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:19Speaker 10: And it will be surprising if it goes to anything else.
- 7:23Speaker 5: But.
- 7:24Speaker 7: I won't be terribly surprised. I mean, coming from an
- 7:29Speaker 7: originality perspective, I think some of the other scores that
- 7:34Speaker 7: we'll be talking about.
- 7:36Speaker 10: I have my.
- 7:37Speaker 7: It's not that I think that they're not going to
- 7:39Speaker 7: choose this score. I'm sure that they're going to choose
- 7:42Speaker 7: this score.
- 7:43Speaker 14: More than likely.
- 7:43Speaker 7: But if they go for a more creative choice... There's
- 7:49Speaker 7: definitely one.
- 7:49Speaker 10: A big one in there. Two of the other ones, I.
- 7:54Speaker 7: Were actually moving, and I was like, wow, this composer
- 7:58Speaker 7: went all out trying to make this not only emotionally
- 8:02Speaker 7: evocative and fitting for the movie, but yeah, something that
- 8:06Speaker 7: we haven't heard before.
- 8:07Speaker 10: Well, I just let people at home know, that's specifically
- 8:11Speaker 10: why you're on board for this one. You're both here
- 8:13Speaker 10: because you're both musically inclined anyway. But specifically, Jacqueline has
- 8:19Speaker 10: written a score herself for a movie meltdown event, I
- 8:23Speaker 10: might add.
- 8:23Speaker 7: That's the truth.
- 8:24Speaker 10: And you have some sort of classical training, you're claiming.
- 8:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 12: Sucker.
- 8:31Speaker 7: Classically trained musician, plus my mother is a cellist in
- 8:35Speaker 7: the orchestra. My brother is- On purpose. Yeah, he has
- 8:39Speaker 7: his master's in violin performance.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:42Speaker 7: Blah, blah, blah. My grandmother was the first opera singer
- 8:47Speaker 7: in the Kentucky Opera House.
- 8:49Speaker 11: Wow.
- 8:49Speaker 7: You know. Lame.
- 8:51Speaker 10: These are all lame accomplishments.
- 8:53Speaker 7: I know some things about some stuff. Well, that's not me.
- 8:56Speaker 7: I mean, I'm classically trained, but I'm not a professional musician.
- 9:00Speaker 10: You just hang out here with Grendel. You're not doing enough.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Hold on. That's true. Yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 7: We're going to.
- 9:05Speaker 10: Have to put you to work. But, yeah, I thought
- 9:08Speaker 10: at least bringing in people who know music. I just
- 9:10Speaker 10: line things up and yammer on about them. But I thought,
- 9:13Speaker 10: you know, to at least round things out, you guys
- 9:15Speaker 10: both know music, well, more than I.
- 9:20Speaker 7: I mean, I would have gone that route, but my
- 9:22Speaker 7: mother was like, no, don't, do not.
- 9:25Speaker 10: I hate my wife.
- 9:27Speaker 7: I take piano lessons for like 14 years, and I
- 9:30Speaker 7: was thinking about it, and she was like, don't do it.
- 9:32Speaker 7: Do not do it.
- 9:32Speaker 2: And I was like, okay.
- 9:33Speaker 10: But you could be at a cool bar with dueling pianos.
- 9:37Speaker 10: Think about how cool that would be. There's the life
- 9:40Speaker 10: for you.
- 9:40Speaker 7: I could have someone singing on top of my piano.
- 9:43Speaker 10: Drunk people throwing things at you. Come on, man.
- 9:47Speaker 7: People putting a few pennies in my tip jar.
- 9:50Speaker 10: I wouldn't get that out of my control.
- 9:53Speaker 7: Requesting Freebird on the piano.
- 9:55Speaker 10: That is a classic.
- 9:59Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 11: All right.
- 10:01Speaker 10: So to jump over to the song category, the first
- 10:05Speaker 10: entry in our songs, we're going with Can't Stop the
- 10:10Speaker 10: Feeling from Trolls, sung by our friend, Mr. Justin Timmer.
- 10:16Speaker 10: Do you really think I can be happy?
- 10:18Speaker 15: Of course.
- 10:19Speaker 10: It's inside you.
- 10:20Speaker 3: It's inside of all of us. And I don't think it.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I feel it.
- 10:27Speaker 10: I got this feeling inside my bones. It goes electric wavy.
- 10:33Speaker 3: When I turn it on.
- 10:35Speaker 7: And if you want it inside your soul.
- 10:40Speaker 10: Just open up your heart, let music take control.
- 10:44Speaker 9: I got that sunshine in my pocket.
- 10:46Speaker 10: Got that good soul in my feet.
- 10:49Speaker 9: I feel that hot blood in my body when it drops.
- 10:52Speaker 16: Ooh, I can't take my eyes off of it.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Moving so phenomenally.
- 10:57Speaker 10: The room unlocked the way we rock it.
- 10:59Speaker 2: So don't stop.
- 11:01Speaker 16: Under the lights when everything goes. Nowhere to hide when
- 11:07Speaker 16: I'm getting you close.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Stop.
- 11:10Speaker 17: When we move, well, you already know.
- 11:13Speaker 2: So just imagine.
- 11:13Speaker 6: Nothing I can see but you.
- 11:15Speaker 2: When you dance, dance, dance. Feel the good, good creeping
- 11:17Speaker 2: up on you.
- 11:18Speaker 6: So just dance, dance, dance.
- 11:20Speaker 15: Come on.
- 12:19Speaker 10: So this one, I didn't know was a song from
- 12:22Speaker 10: a movie.
- 12:23Speaker 12: I didn't either.
- 12:23Speaker 10: Like, I've spent the entire year listening to it. It
- 12:26Speaker 10: got a ton of radio play. And I was just like, oh,
- 12:30Speaker 10: this is... Now, I do remember hearing that he was
- 12:33Speaker 10: involved in Trolls, and I went, oh, really, Justin? But
- 12:36Speaker 10: I was like, dude, all right, whatever. You got a
- 12:38Speaker 10: house to pay for.
- 12:39Speaker 14: I get it.
- 12:40Speaker 10: But I'm just... Yeah, I don't think until the nominations
- 12:43Speaker 10: came out, I went, oh, that's how he was connected
- 12:46Speaker 10: to this.
- 12:46Speaker 2: And they.
- 12:47Speaker 10: Put that out as a single out in the real world,
- 12:50Speaker 10: maybe more, I mean, I bet that got way more
- 12:53Speaker 10: interest than the movie did. Yeah. Because I don't know
- 12:56Speaker 10: anybody who's seen Trolls.
- 12:57Speaker 18: Nope.
- 12:57Speaker 10: And I haven't heard good things from the internets. I've
- 13:01Speaker 10: heard marginal, like I think everybody, the best I heard
- 13:03Speaker 10: was kind of like, it's not as bad as I expected.
- 13:07Speaker 7: Not as bad as I expected.
- 13:08Speaker 10: I expected to hate it, and it was all right.
- 13:11Speaker 12: That's like the song itself. It's not bad, but it's
- 13:14Speaker 12: not great.
- 13:14Speaker 10: I think it's pretty damn good. Again, I'm a sucker
- 13:18Speaker 10: for cheesy pop. So like to me, I think there's
- 13:21Speaker 10: an art form to writing pop music and like Justin's
- 13:25Speaker 10: always been good at it. Like, I mean like everything
- 13:27Speaker 10: he's done, even, even with the band, but I'm like
- 13:30Speaker 10: everything solo he's done is like very old school. Like
- 13:35Speaker 10: in the, in you can, that first single of his
- 13:38Speaker 10: by himself, you can tell how much he grew up
- 13:40Speaker 10: on Michael Jackson. So it's like he's taking from the
- 13:43Speaker 10: greats of the last generation and he's sort of honed
- 13:47Speaker 10: that as time's gone on. And I see these new
- 13:49Speaker 10: singles come out and even if I don't love them,
- 13:51Speaker 10: I'm just like, damn, it's good. It's well put together.
- 13:55Speaker 10: He is a professional now at doing that kind of stuff.
- 13:59Speaker 10: So no surprise that studios are like, hey, we've got
- 14:02Speaker 10: this cheesy animated movie and we need somebody to add
- 14:04Speaker 10: some music to it. So I can see why... They're
- 14:07Speaker 10: approaching him, but I don't know. What are your takes
- 14:10Speaker 10: on it?
- 14:10Speaker 7: I mean, it's a cool little pop song. I don't
- 14:13Speaker 7: think it's a good Justin Timberlake song at all. I
- 14:16Speaker 7: was like, cool, there's kind of a very muted, funky
- 14:18Speaker 7: bass line that you can't really hear, and that's probably
- 14:21Speaker 7: the coolest part of the song. But yeah, it's not
- 14:24Speaker 7: a good... I was like, he doesn't usually make boring
- 14:27Speaker 7: pop songs, but that was a boring pop song.
- 14:31Speaker 12: As far as Oscar-worthy... pop songs go, I don't think
- 14:36Speaker 12: it holds up to, like, a lot of the other
- 14:39Speaker 12: ones that have gone before.
- 14:40Speaker 10: I can see it getting thrown in there. Do I
- 14:42Speaker 10: think it holds up to, like, the winners?
- 14:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:45Speaker 10: Or even the more memorable ones that have come along
- 14:47Speaker 10: over the years? Eh, probably not. It is one of those, like,
- 14:50Speaker 10: in a year or two, I bet everyone will forget
- 14:52Speaker 10: that this got nominated, and so... It's just something else
- 14:56Speaker 10: to add to the mix. I will say in his defense,
- 15:00Speaker 10: are you okay?
- 15:01Speaker 7: The thought of it actually winning just made me laugh.
- 15:05Speaker 10: Hey, Eminem has an Oscar. Bruce Springsteen has an Oscar.
- 15:09Speaker 10: These guys that used to just be rock and roll
- 15:12Speaker 10: dorks and rap guys that were already kind of going
- 15:16Speaker 10: against the grain. Every once in a while, the Oscars
- 15:19Speaker 10: are like, no, we want to be cool. We want
- 15:20Speaker 10: to throw one at somebody popular. So, I mean, People
- 15:24Speaker 10: love Justin.
- 15:26Speaker 7: People do love Justin.
- 15:27Speaker 10: But I was going to say, as far as it
- 15:29Speaker 10: being different than some of his other stuff, it is
- 15:31Speaker 10: co-written by two other people. So maybe they're dragging him down.
- 15:35Speaker 7: They're dragging him down.
- 15:36Speaker 10: Yeah, it's written by Justin Timberlake, Max Martin, and Carl
- 15:41Speaker 10: Johan Schuster. So, way to go, you two guys.
- 15:45Speaker 12: I have no idea who those guys are.
- 15:46Speaker 10: Dragging him down. They have not been nominated. I checked,
- 15:48Speaker 10: because I was like, are the other guys like the
- 15:51Speaker 10: Oscar end of it that he brought in and- None
- 15:53Speaker 10: of them have been nominated before, so I think they
- 15:56Speaker 10: just went the pop route this time around. All right,
- 15:59Speaker 10: so next back to score. To me, this is the
- 16:02Speaker 10: one that is like, wow, this got nominated? This is
- 16:07Speaker 10: the score for Jackie. So first off, I'm like, I
- 16:11Speaker 10: don't know. am shocked that this type of movie, and granted,
- 16:15Speaker 10: I haven't even seen it yet, but I'm just sort
- 16:17Speaker 10: of a biopic with a very recognizable actress attached, and
- 16:21Speaker 10: I've heard it doesn't take the normal route of a
- 16:24Speaker 10: cheesy biopic, so that's a little more promising, but still,
- 16:27Speaker 10: to be a relatively well-financed studio release, I'm like, Mika
- 16:32Speaker 10: Levy is a weird choice. It made sense when you're
- 16:37Speaker 10: doing a weird alien movie, because she's under the skin
- 16:41Speaker 10: and it's amazing but that's the kind of movie that
- 16:45Speaker 10: is like that didn't surprise me and then like i
- 16:47Speaker 10: saw she was attached to jackie and i was just
- 16:49Speaker 10: like what what i think.
- 16:53Speaker 18: It makes sense i think it's great but i'm just
- 16:55Speaker 18: like i can't believe she got that again i think
- 16:58Speaker 18: that's to the director's credit because he wanted to have
- 17:01Speaker 18: that weird tone to it and he wanted to Again,
- 17:04Speaker 18: because it's centered on her and not Kennedy, he wanted
- 17:07Speaker 18: to get a female perspective even on the musical score.
- 17:10Speaker 10: So it's like everything was sort of, yeah, like very
- 17:14Speaker 10: tailored to fit that.
- 18:27Speaker 12: The intro song, though, when it first started playing, I
- 18:30Speaker 12: was like, okay, this is interesting. It's got a nice
- 18:32Speaker 12: dreamy quality to it.
- 18:33Speaker 10: And weird right off the bat.
- 18:34Speaker 19: Very weird.
- 18:35Speaker 10: Changing keys.
- 18:37Speaker 12: But it doesn't really go anywhere. I mean, it kind
- 18:42Speaker 12: of builds. And yeah, there's the key changes and it's
- 18:46Speaker 12: like there's some layering going on. but there's no real
- 18:50Speaker 12: movements to the song it's just the same thing over.
- 18:53Speaker 10: And over which again is not too far off from
- 18:55Speaker 10: i think it worked a little better for under the
- 18:57Speaker 10: skin but again i feel like there was more to
- 19:00Speaker 10: that and it changes from song to song like there's
- 19:03Speaker 10: some pretty minimal stuff in under the skin and i
- 19:06Speaker 10: think this has that same thing i think maybe it
- 19:09Speaker 10: just depending on where you land in the score there's
- 19:12Speaker 10: more to work with but yeah that's kind of why
- 19:14Speaker 10: like We start off with the intro there, and it's
- 19:17Speaker 10: like that one is so short and so minimal that
- 19:20Speaker 10: I'm like, that at least gives you the kind of
- 19:23Speaker 10: tone of what we're dealing with. So I wanted to
- 19:25Speaker 10: throw that in. Once in a while, I want to
- 19:26Speaker 10: throw a little extra piece in. So this other one
- 19:29Speaker 10: is the other song from Children, which kind of gives
- 19:32Speaker 10: you a little different take on what she's doing here.
- 19:35Speaker 5: © transcript Emily.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Beynon This was one of my favorite scores overall, period.
- 21:10Speaker 10: I think it's the most interesting, at least, if not
- 21:13Speaker 10: the most impressive.
- 21:15Speaker 7: Just the way that it melts in and out of
- 21:19Speaker 7: these different just tones like these different feelings and they
- 21:25Speaker 7: she never really neglects instruments like i can hear um
- 21:29Speaker 7: that she's really utilizing the entire orchestra for like various
- 21:34Speaker 7: specific um like timbres and emotions that she's trying to
- 21:39Speaker 7: uh get through and for jackie i think it's it's
- 21:42Speaker 7: very good i think it's a perfect choice like having
- 21:45Speaker 7: this like your world has just been you know, shaken.
- 21:50Speaker 7: And this is just setting the tone for this kind
- 21:53Speaker 7: of like nauseating, like the way that the key changes,
- 21:56Speaker 7: like it like makes you feel uneasy and nauseous. Like
- 22:02Speaker 7: you would be if your husband was just shut.
- 22:05Speaker 10: It still feels very otherworldly. And then I was like,
- 22:09Speaker 10: actually that, fits again it'd be different if this was
- 22:11Speaker 10: another tie to a weird president or some sort of
- 22:15Speaker 10: boring you know if you're if this was the score
- 22:16Speaker 10: to lincoln it'd be really weird granted another guy got
- 22:19Speaker 10: shot but i'm just like there's so much like weirdness
- 22:23Speaker 10: around the kennedy assassination and everything that came after it
- 22:27Speaker 10: that i'm like it already has its own otherworldly little
- 22:30Speaker 10: element to the weird like conspiracies and everything that's popped
- 22:34Speaker 10: up around it so i'm like i feel like it
- 22:36Speaker 10: doesn't heard it from that angle. I think it kind
- 22:39Speaker 10: of matches that idea of just like everything about what
- 22:43Speaker 10: went on that day is weird and doesn't make sense.
- 22:46Speaker 10: So here's a score that kind of matches.
- 22:48Speaker 7: I think I'm also biased towards this score because it
- 22:50Speaker 7: uses so much cello and bass.
- 22:52Speaker 10: And you hate those.
- 22:54Speaker 7: Oh, yeah. I hate them so much that I love them.
- 22:58Speaker 12: I think my big complaint about those two songs was
- 23:03Speaker 12: not having seen the movie, I'm not really sure how
- 23:06Speaker 12: it would fit in. Um, but at the same time, I,
- 23:10Speaker 12: I feel like when something's of this caliber, if it's,
- 23:14Speaker 12: if it's Oscar worthy, that it's almost like it should
- 23:17Speaker 12: stand on its own two feet.
- 23:19Speaker 10: I have that comment about a song later.
- 23:21Speaker 12: Right. As a couple of these songs.
- 23:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 23:24Speaker 12: I feel that way about, and I don't know. It's
- 23:27Speaker 12: not that it's bad.
- 23:28Speaker 10: It's just, again, is it, Does it work on its own?
- 23:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 23:31Speaker 12: Does it work on its own?
- 23:33Speaker 7: I don't think... I mean, scores are inherently not supposed
- 23:36Speaker 7: to stand up on their own.
- 23:37Speaker 10: We've had that question before.
- 23:39Speaker 7: Scores are written for the film.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Sure.
- 23:41Speaker 7: They're written to be.
- 23:42Speaker 10: Is it incomplete without watching the movie?
- 23:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:45Speaker 10: But at the same time, I mean, there are plenty
- 23:47Speaker 10: of people, myself included, that buy the score and sit
- 23:52Speaker 10: and listen to the score doing your own thing or...
- 23:54Speaker 10: driving around or you're out in the world. So you're
- 23:56Speaker 10: taking it out of context already.
- 23:59Speaker 7: And there are some movies where when you take it
- 24:01Speaker 7: out of context, like, it still is good listening. Like,
- 24:04Speaker 7: you know, there will be blood, like, that entire score. Like,
- 24:08Speaker 7: holy crap. Like, I would listen to that every day
- 24:10Speaker 7: of the week. But I think it's like, but Jackie,
- 24:14Speaker 7: you don't want to be listening to, you don't want
- 24:16Speaker 7: that vibe when you're just hanging out.
- 24:18Speaker 10: Cranking down the windows, rolling down the street with some
- 24:22Speaker 10: Jackie score cranked up. Take that, person next to me
- 24:28Speaker 10: with Justin blaring out the windows. Can't fight this feeling.
- 24:32Speaker 16: Hey, this is Tiffany, and.
- 24:36Speaker 8: You're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 25:07Speaker 10: Well, I love the movies. Welcome to the biggest movie
- 25:12Speaker 10: event of the year.
- 25:13Speaker 20: We're going to have a great night, ladies and gentlemen.
- 25:17Speaker 17: And the Oscar goes to.
- 25:18Speaker 12: Nick Ledger.
- 25:20Speaker 7: Thank you so much.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Ladies and.
- 25:24Speaker 6: Gentlemen, Prepare yourselves. It's time for the Movie Meltdown Oscar
- 25:30Speaker 6: Mayer Party. With all the blitz, glamour, poor products, and
- 25:34Speaker 6: vicious commentary you've come to know and love, the Academy
- 25:38Speaker 6: Awards will never be the same.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Bacon tastes good.
- 25:42Speaker 6: Paw chops taste good. Coming soon to this feed. Don't
- 25:47Speaker 6: miss it. Oscar Meltdown. It's going to be ornery, clocking good.
- 25:58Speaker 6: All right.
- 25:58Speaker 10: So next up, we're back to the songs. And this one,
- 26:01Speaker 10: I already kind of used that, but we'll get to
- 26:08Speaker 10: my description for this one in a minute. This is
- 26:10Speaker 10: The Empty Chair from Jim, The James Foley Story, and
- 26:15Speaker 10: the music and lyric by J. Ralph and Sting. very
- 26:18Speaker 10: obviously right now.
- 26:52Speaker 21: If I should close my eyes, that my soul can see.
- 26:59Speaker 21: There's a place at the table that you saved for me.
- 27:05Speaker 21: So many thousand miles, oh.
- 27:08Speaker 6: Land and sea.
- 27:10Speaker 21: I hope today.
- 27:15Speaker 10: That you hear my prayer.
- 27:19Speaker 21: Somehow I'll be there It's but a concrete floor Where.
- 27:30Speaker 5: My head will lay.
- 27:33Speaker 21: And though the walls of this prison Are as cold
- 27:37Speaker 21: as clay But there's a shaft of light Where.
- 27:43Speaker 6: I count my days So don't despair Of the empty
- 27:51Speaker 6: chair And somehow.
- 27:57Speaker 5: I'll be there.
- 28:01Speaker 21: Some days I'm strong Some days I'm weak On days
- 28:08Speaker 21: when I'm broken I can barely speak That place in
- 28:14Speaker 21: my head Where my thoughts still roam Somehow I've come
- 28:23Speaker 21: home And when the winter comes And the.
- 28:30Speaker 6: Trees lie bare.
- 28:33Speaker 21: And you just stare out the window In the darkness
- 28:37Speaker 21: there Well I was always late.
- 28:41Speaker 6: For every meal you'll swear.
- 28:46Speaker 19: But keep my.
- 28:47Speaker 21: Place the empty chair.
- 28:54Speaker 6: And somehow.
- 28:57Speaker 21: I'll be there.
- 29:02Speaker 6: And somehow.
- 29:05Speaker 5: I'll be there.
- 29:14Speaker 12: I had high hopes for this one when I found
- 29:16Speaker 12: out it was by Sting but it just it was.
- 29:20Speaker 22: Boring it was so boring this to me like as
- 29:24Speaker 22: soon as it started i was like i feel like
- 29:27Speaker 22: this song was created specifically to be performed on the
- 29:31Speaker 22: oscar telecast.
- 29:33Speaker 10: Like like it was almost conceived as he sat down
- 29:36Speaker 10: in front of the audience and went all right because
- 29:39Speaker 10: i can already see it in my head. I can
- 29:41Speaker 10: already picture Sting on stage and the lighting they're going
- 29:44Speaker 10: to use and the way they move the camera. I
- 29:48Speaker 10: already have this entire vision in my head, and I
- 29:52Speaker 10: feel like that's exactly what it was created for because
- 29:55Speaker 10: this was one of those I was like, it's all right.
- 29:58Speaker 10: It's a decent song. but I don't feel like it's
- 30:03Speaker 10: solid in any other way.
- 30:04Speaker 7: I feel like it just- It almost sounds fake.
- 30:07Speaker 10: It's almost like a fictional song made up for a
- 30:10Speaker 10: fictional movie to make some sort of point about the
- 30:13Speaker 10: Oscars and weird- Again, I'm trying to decide if it
- 30:18Speaker 10: has more weight because I haven't seen the movie again.
- 30:20Speaker 10: I'm like, it's a pretty serious movie topic-wise. So I'm like,
- 30:25Speaker 10: maybe it brings a little more weight to it if
- 30:27Speaker 10: you've just come out of the movie and this kicks
- 30:29Speaker 10: in when the credits are rolling. But again, on its own.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 30:35Speaker 10: And that's what I was thinking earlier. This was one
- 30:38Speaker 10: of the ones I had that written down. I was like,
- 30:40Speaker 10: I feel like if it's a good song, regardless of
- 30:43Speaker 10: whether you've seen the movie, it should stand on its own.
- 30:46Speaker 10: It should just be a good song. Even if it had...
- 30:48Speaker 10: Because I was going with older ones. I'm like, there
- 30:51Speaker 10: are some that are so inherent to their... property that
- 30:55Speaker 10: like they're singing about things that happen in a movie
- 30:59Speaker 10: and sometimes that's fine like sometimes that you come out
- 31:01Speaker 10: of it and like you don't even realize that anymore
- 31:04Speaker 10: like you don't even think about what exactly they're singing
- 31:08Speaker 10: in context with the movie it like it takes on
- 31:10Speaker 10: its own little life as a separate song and i
- 31:13Speaker 10: feel like this one i don't i don't really get
- 31:14Speaker 10: that from but.
- 31:16Speaker 12: I do agree with you about the whole written for
- 31:19Speaker 12: the oscar performance thing because in a way, I mean,
- 31:22Speaker 12: it kind of reminds me, and you mentioned Springsteen earlier.
- 31:27Speaker 12: It doesn't sound like the, was it Streets of Philadelphia?
- 31:30Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 31:31Speaker 17: It doesn't sound like that, which, yeah.
- 31:33Speaker 12: Great song.
- 31:33Speaker 10: It's a great song. And not really, that's why, like
- 31:36Speaker 10: at the time, I remember being in shock when he
- 31:38Speaker 10: came out with that song and when he won because
- 31:40Speaker 10: he was still like, born in the usa to me
- 31:43Speaker 10: like sure it's funny now like since that point almost
- 31:45Speaker 10: he's gotten more and more that that kind of is
- 31:48Speaker 10: his sound now but like that was sort of that
- 31:50Speaker 10: dividing line in the springsteen arc because everything before that
- 31:54Speaker 10: was i remember i didn't like any of that 80s
- 31:56Speaker 10: stuff that he became so popular for but like now
- 32:00Speaker 10: looking at his later stuff in life i kind of
- 32:03Speaker 10: like a lot of that so i'm like that that
- 32:05Speaker 10: i felt like was and maybe it was him stepping
- 32:07Speaker 10: up for like The studio came to me. This is
- 32:11Speaker 10: a serious subject. I want to write a good song.
- 32:13Speaker 10: So it's like maybe he just stepped up and took
- 32:16Speaker 10: it in that direction he'd been wanting to go anyway.
- 32:18Speaker 12: But I kind of feel now that you've mentioned that
- 32:20Speaker 12: I can kind of see Sting saying, okay, this worked
- 32:24Speaker 12: when Springsteen did it. Let's see if I can do
- 32:27Speaker 12: the same thing.
- 32:30Speaker 10: Sting's weird for me. It's like I think he got...
- 32:35Speaker 10: again like kind of like what i said with justin
- 32:37Speaker 10: like i i think he got very polished after he
- 32:40Speaker 10: had his band but i really don't respond to almost
- 32:44Speaker 10: anything he's done i think there's two or three like
- 32:46Speaker 10: really well written songs from his solo career but i
- 32:49Speaker 10: just don't respond to it where if like old police
- 32:52Speaker 10: stuff comes on the radio i'm just like damn this
- 32:54Speaker 10: is a good song and i'm like.
- 32:55Speaker 12: He just put out a really good rock.
- 32:58Speaker 10: Album yeah so i've heard like the one single i
- 33:00Speaker 10: haven't heard anything else yet i.
- 33:02Speaker 12: Mean i've heard four or five tracks off of it
- 33:03Speaker 12: but it's all It's all high-quality stuff, high-caliber, up-tempo. So
- 33:08Speaker 12: I was kind of expecting that when I saw Sting.
- 33:10Speaker 12: I thought, okay, cool, he's in this phase again. Maybe
- 33:14Speaker 12: that's what this song is going to be like. And
- 33:16Speaker 12: then it just completely, for me, just completely fell flat.
- 33:20Speaker 7: Yeah, it's going to be this serious movie, and this
- 33:23Speaker 7: is a serious song from when I read the lyrics,
- 33:26Speaker 7: and it sounds somber, but it doesn't make you feel somber.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:30Speaker 10: Yeah, it doesn't. Again, it feels like he came from
- 33:33Speaker 10: the outside and went, I need something that kind of
- 33:35Speaker 10: fits this.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:36Speaker 7: It's like a robot making a sad song.
- 33:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 33:38Speaker 10: But I mean, you look at like, that's since we
- 33:41Speaker 10: kept throwing out that example, like Streets of Philadelphia, like
- 33:43Speaker 10: you feel like, oh no, he got it. Like he
- 33:45Speaker 10: got what's going on in the song. It's a minimal
- 33:48Speaker 10: amount of lyrics, but he just kind of nails like,
- 33:51Speaker 10: oh yeah, this is, this is messed up. And this
- 33:53Speaker 10: guy and everything he's going through is horrible where this
- 33:56Speaker 10: just feels like I wrote a song to end up
- 33:58Speaker 10: on the Oscars. No offense, but that, To me, that's
- 34:01Speaker 10: just how it read the first time I heard it.
- 34:05Speaker 10: So next on the score list, we're going with this
- 34:09Speaker 10: track from Lion. This is the main theme, A Long
- 34:12Speaker 10: Way Home, and it is by Dustin O'Halloran and Hauschka.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Piano plays.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Softly I love you.
- 35:13Speaker 2: So so Thank you.
- 36:06Speaker 12: I will admit, I did not make it all the
- 36:08Speaker 12: way through that song.
- 36:12Speaker 7: I kind of skimmed through it a bit. It seems
- 36:15Speaker 7: like it's kind of a, if you're talking about scores
- 36:18Speaker 7: that don't really go anywhere, this one, I mean, it
- 36:20Speaker 7: does a theme and variation. It's got, you know, it's
- 36:24Speaker 7: cool that it has this kind of percussive harp and
- 36:26Speaker 7: strings and things going on, but Yeah, it just kind
- 36:29Speaker 7: of goes and takes the same thing.
- 36:31Speaker 12: I got about four minutes into it, and I was like,
- 36:34Speaker 12: how much longer do we have left? And I checked
- 36:37Speaker 12: the time.
- 36:37Speaker 17: Yeah, I checked the time.
- 36:38Speaker 12: There's 13 more minutes left.
- 36:40Speaker 17: I'm like, I can't.
- 36:42Speaker 12: I won't do it.
- 36:42Speaker 10: Yeah, I refuse. I won't do it. And that's why
- 36:46Speaker 10: we skipped out on it midway, too.
- 36:48Speaker 7: It was fine.
- 36:49Speaker 10: It was at least giving you a sample of it.
- 36:51Speaker 12: Long Way Home is a fitting title.
- 36:53Speaker 7: It's a very long way to the end of the song.
- 36:55Speaker 10: Yeah, I don't know that everybody wanted to go through
- 36:58Speaker 10: the entirety of that. So that just gave you a
- 37:00Speaker 10: sample of what you're dealing with.
- 37:02Speaker 17: Well, what are they showing on the screen for those
- 37:04Speaker 17: 17 minutes?
- 37:05Speaker 7: That's what I want to know, yeah.
- 37:06Speaker 10: Is it the end credits? Lots and lots of credits.
- 37:10Speaker 10: Although this was not a whole lot of special effects,
- 37:12Speaker 10: I'm guessing, so. I don't know where all the credits
- 37:15Speaker 10: are going on this one. I feel like this was
- 37:18Speaker 10: the one that felt the most familiar to me, but
- 37:22Speaker 10: almost like I've heard this before. Right, that's why it
- 37:25Speaker 10: seems familiar. Well, I mean, in other bands, and not
- 37:29Speaker 10: specifically like, oh, you stole this from this other track.
- 37:33Speaker 10: I mean, bits and pieces of it from different music
- 37:36Speaker 10: and different types of music, and it all just kind
- 37:39Speaker 10: of comes together, and it works sort of as its
- 37:42Speaker 10: own thing, if you don't know any better, but I
- 37:44Speaker 10: kept going through going, I'm not even pinning down exactly
- 37:47Speaker 10: what it is, but I feel like I've heard all
- 37:49Speaker 10: these bits and pieces in other things before.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:52Speaker 7: I think it's a very basic, very basic score.
- 37:56Speaker 10: And I feel like it's not doing anything different. Like
- 37:58Speaker 10: you can take those ideas from other things and turn
- 38:01Speaker 10: it into something better. And I don't feel like it
- 38:03Speaker 10: really steps up and does that either.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:05Speaker 10: It just does it for a longer.
- 38:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 38:07Speaker 10: So I don't know. That was about the only thing
- 38:10Speaker 10: I took. I was like, I don't think this is bad.
- 38:12Speaker 10: It just feels familiar and doesn't seem like it's willing
- 38:16Speaker 10: to do anything extra with it.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:18Speaker 17: And, you know, familiar is not always bad.
- 38:20Speaker 10: No.
- 38:20Speaker 12: But when you're talking, you know, Oscar worthy, it's not
- 38:25Speaker 12: always a good thing.
- 38:27Speaker 10: Especially when Sia had a song on this album, too.
- 38:31Speaker 10: That was like, I guess, their big name that they
- 38:33Speaker 10: brought in. I don't know if. I don't know if
- 38:35Speaker 10: it was created specifically. That's why I was trying to
- 38:37Speaker 10: look into it earlier and see if maybe it was disqualified.
- 38:39Speaker 10: Because usually if you, again, much like the Sting one,
- 38:42Speaker 10: if you bring in a name on your soundtrack, half
- 38:45Speaker 10: the time it's you're hoping to end up with a nomination.
- 38:48Speaker 10: So it's like a lot of times that pans out
- 38:49Speaker 10: because there aren't a whole lot of options to go
- 38:51Speaker 10: with before the year's out. So them bringing in a
- 38:54Speaker 10: big name and I was listening to hers and it's
- 38:56Speaker 10: a pretty good song. All of her stuff is pretty interesting.
- 38:59Speaker 10: So yeah, I was kind of surprised that that didn't
- 39:02Speaker 10: end up on the song list. category but i don't
- 39:05Speaker 10: know maybe there's a weird disqualification they like to disqualify
- 39:07Speaker 10: a lot of stuff so but yeah i thought that
- 39:10Speaker 10: was interesting too that they also brought in a recognizable
- 39:14Speaker 10: semi-pop star that like you know to bring in on
- 39:16Speaker 10: the same soundtrack so all right so returning to our
- 39:23Speaker 10: favorite of the the one that's taking over the show
- 39:27Speaker 10: whether we like it or not this would be song
- 39:32Speaker 10: wise this is our nomination number one for La La
- 39:35Speaker 10: Land this is Audition The Fools Who Dream it's written
- 39:40Speaker 10: by Justin Hurwitz and is featuring lyrics by Benji Pask
- 39:45Speaker 10: if I'm pronouncing it right Paskay Well, I was more because.
- 39:49Speaker 10: I'm not really sure.
- 39:50Speaker 12: Because I was like, is it binge or binge?
- 39:52Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 39:53Speaker 11: Binge.
- 39:54Speaker 12: Binge. And I'm not trying to make fun of the guy.
- 39:58Speaker 12: I really just don't know how you say that.
- 40:01Speaker 10: I wish this was just, they make it so difficult.
- 40:04Speaker 10: Everybody just needs boring names. Is that too much? And
- 40:08Speaker 10: Justin Paul. See, I can pronounce Justin.
- 40:10Speaker 12: Justin Paul.
- 40:11Speaker 10: Makes it a lot easier. Just be like Justin.
- 40:13Speaker 12: Unless he calls himself Justine.
- 40:14Speaker 10: Justine Paul. Pauline. More importantly, it's all being sung by
- 40:20Speaker 10: Emma Stone. Who cares about the rest?
- 40:21Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 40:22Speaker 15: My aunt used to live in Paris. I remember she
- 40:25Speaker 15: used to come home and she would tell us stories
- 40:29Speaker 15: about being abroad. And I remember she told us that
- 40:36Speaker 15: she jumped into the river once.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Barefoot.
- 40:44Speaker 10: She smiled.
- 40:47Speaker 21: Laughed.
- 40:49Speaker 19: Without looking And tumbled into.
- 41:00Speaker 6: The sand.
- 41:04Speaker 19: The water was freezing She spent a month sneezing But
- 41:13Speaker 19: said she would do it again Here's to the ones
- 41:23Speaker 19: who dream Foolish as they may seem Here's to the
- 41:37Speaker 19: hearts that.
- 41:41Speaker 8: Ache Here's to.
- 41:45Speaker 7: The mess we make.
- 41:51Speaker 19: She captured a feeling, sky with no ceiling, the sunset
- 41:58Speaker 19: inside a frame. She lived in her liquor and died
- 42:07Speaker 19: with a flicker.
- 42:10Speaker 9: I'll always remember the flame. Here's to the ones who
- 42:19Speaker 9: dream Foolish as they may seem Here's to the hearts
- 42:31Speaker 9: that ache Here's to the mess we make She told
- 42:41Speaker 9: me A bit of madness is key To give us
- 42:47Speaker 9: new colors to see Who knows where it will.
- 42:53Speaker 4: Lead The ripples from pebbles The painters and poets.
- 43:09Speaker 16: And plays And here's to the fools who.
- 43:15Speaker 8: Dream Crazy as they may seem Here's to the hearts
- 43:25Speaker 8: that break Here's to the mess we.
- 43:31Speaker 16: Make I trace it all back to then her and
- 43:47Speaker 16: the snow and the.
- 43:50Speaker 19: Sand smiling through it.
- 43:59Speaker 16: She said She'd.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Do it again.
- 44:07Speaker 10: Did you guys see La La Land?
- 44:08Speaker 6: I have not seen it.
- 44:09Speaker 7: I haven't seen it yet.
- 44:11Speaker 10: I did just recently just kind of because I wanted
- 44:13Speaker 10: to see and I still wanted to see it on
- 44:15Speaker 10: the big screen-ish. Not that they're all huge. They've downsized
- 44:19Speaker 10: so much now. But still, just in a theater I
- 44:22Speaker 10: wanted to try to experience it because I feel like
- 44:24Speaker 10: that's how those things should probably work. And again, I
- 44:29Speaker 10: think that's my takeaway that that becomes what sort of
- 44:33Speaker 10: saves it for me and not that it was ever
- 44:37Speaker 10: even in danger of being bad it's just like it
- 44:40Speaker 10: was sort of midway through I'm just like it's fine
- 44:44Speaker 10: it's just sort of a a normal like trying to
- 44:47Speaker 10: revitalize the musical in in modern day which is hard
- 44:51Speaker 10: to do in LA which is harder to do so
- 44:54Speaker 10: it's like it doesn't fit the way that, you know,
- 44:57Speaker 10: a musical is supposed to go. So they're sort of
- 44:59Speaker 10: shoving it into the 21st century, into the new way
- 45:03Speaker 10: that we're trying to do these things. And I'm like,
- 45:05Speaker 10: it's fine along those, along that path. It's fine. And
- 45:09Speaker 10: then like, by the end, I'm like, it gets a
- 45:12Speaker 10: little more impressive as far as what it needs to
- 45:15Speaker 10: deliver because I, and so much of it, and maybe
- 45:18Speaker 10: I'm just biased because I really like Emma Stone, but
- 45:21Speaker 10: I'm like, I feel like so much of it is
- 45:23Speaker 10: channeled through Emma Stone because it's, Not only is she
- 45:26Speaker 10: ridiculously likable, and I feel like, I feel like this
- 45:30Speaker 10: a lot, but especially in this movie, Ryan Gosling's kind.
- 45:33Speaker 20: Of a jerk.
- 45:35Speaker 10: He's really, I mean, by the end, you're like, okay,
- 45:38Speaker 10: he's not a horrible guy. He's all right.
- 45:40Speaker 12: He's a good guy.
- 45:41Speaker 10: He's not a likable guy, but eventually he proves himself
- 45:44Speaker 10: that he's a good guy, but Emma's always just like, again,
- 45:50Speaker 10: I think she kind of gets it in a way
- 45:52Speaker 10: that Maybe even Ryan didn't. And I think by the end,
- 45:55Speaker 10: he delivers a good performance. But I think so much
- 45:57Speaker 10: of what comes through with her is just not overly showy,
- 46:02Speaker 10: which in a big production musical is probably hard to
- 46:06Speaker 10: not dial it up to that point.
- 46:08Speaker 12: Well, like somebody that's, I mean, because she's still fairly young.
- 46:12Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 46:13Speaker 12: You know, her vocal performance was really good. And excuse me,
- 46:16Speaker 12: it wasn't over the top. It wasn't. didn't feel like
- 46:19Speaker 12: it was lacking anything. I mean, she handled it quite well.
- 46:22Speaker 10: It's to me. And again, especially on this song, maybe
- 46:25Speaker 10: even more than the rest. I think it's, it's so real.
- 46:29Speaker 10: Like it's very genuine. It's very heartfelt. And I think
- 46:32Speaker 10: that's what, what gives it the edge because this song
- 46:35Speaker 10: could kind of be like, it's all right. I think
- 46:38Speaker 10: there's so much like of her that comes through in it.
- 46:42Speaker 10: Like literally from their little spoken intro going into it
- 46:45Speaker 10: to like, it does not go out with a bang.
- 46:48Speaker 10: Like it just sort of, but there's so much emotion
- 46:52Speaker 10: in the end of it from her. And I'm just like, okay,
- 46:55Speaker 10: that worked. I'm like, damn, that worked.
- 46:57Speaker 12: It doesn't need the big finish because of the way
- 47:00Speaker 12: it's handled and performed.
- 47:02Speaker 7: And she doesn't have like perfect vocals, but that's great.
- 47:06Speaker 7: It's almost like the difference between like, this perfect digital
- 47:10Speaker 7: picture and then the warmth of a Polaroid or a
- 47:14Speaker 7: manual camera. That's what I felt from it. I was like,
- 47:17Speaker 7: I can feel like she's in the room with me.
- 47:20Speaker 7: I feel like I could sing this song.
- 47:22Speaker 10: That was my thing. Again, I think it makes it
- 47:24Speaker 10: very real. I think you buy her as a person
- 47:28Speaker 10: and not just this caricature of someone in a musical.
- 47:31Speaker 10: I buy her as a real person because And I
- 47:34Speaker 10: think it works from the angle that they're working as
- 47:37Speaker 10: far as, you know, the audition theme, if nothing else,
- 47:40Speaker 10: of like constantly being up there and thrown into, you know,
- 47:45Speaker 10: people looking at you and judging you and like not
- 47:47Speaker 10: feeling like you're perfect. And she's not. And so it
- 47:50Speaker 10: does kind of, to me, that grounded her role that
- 47:53Speaker 10: like when you see her like putting together this production
- 47:56Speaker 10: that in the story isn't super successful, you're like, yeah,
- 48:00Speaker 10: that's probably how a lot of people go. Like she's
- 48:03Speaker 10: not perfect. Like, and things aren't always going to work
- 48:05Speaker 10: out for her. And like, it makes it very real
- 48:08Speaker 10: and grounded. And to me, that's what works best in
- 48:10Speaker 10: that whole movie is the weird little heart of that
- 48:13Speaker 10: that runs through the whole movie and especially picks up
- 48:17Speaker 10: like halfway through when you start seeing how much she's
- 48:20Speaker 10: struggling and their weird little problems that they have. And
- 48:23Speaker 10: then the wrap up is amazing. And so it all
- 48:26Speaker 10: kind of comes together, but yeah, I feel like so
- 48:28Speaker 10: much of it rests on, her performance and what she
- 48:31Speaker 10: brings to it.
- 48:32Speaker 7: They can hear like her little voice cracking. Like when
- 48:36Speaker 7: she said, it's so impressive.
- 48:38Speaker 10: It's amazing. And again, that shouldn't be how that works,
- 48:42Speaker 10: but that's why.
- 48:42Speaker 12: It works for me.
- 48:44Speaker 14: Yeah. So once again, Emma Stone's awesome. This episode is

- 50:57Speaker 10: and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 50:59Speaker 11: You say....
- 51:03Speaker 6: I only hear what I want to.
- 51:10Speaker 10: All right, so we're back on score now. And this is,
- 51:14Speaker 10: if I have to guess, I'm guessing you're leaning towards
- 51:16Speaker 10: this one, Jacqueline. This is the score for Moonlight?
- 51:19Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 51:20Speaker 7: Oh, yes.
- 51:21Speaker 10: So this is.
- 51:25Speaker 7: The end credits.
- 51:26Speaker 10: End credits suite composed by Nicholas Bertel.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
- 55:25Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 56:31Speaker 7: This is probably the only score that made me feel
- 56:40Speaker 7: actually emotional.
- 56:42Speaker 10: Feel real feelings?
- 56:43Speaker 7: I felt actual real feelings.
- 56:45Speaker 10: I don't know if that happens anymore. You can't have
- 56:47Speaker 10: them manufactured for you. There's a place you can order
- 56:50Speaker 10: them on the internet now.
- 56:51Speaker 7: So if you haven't seen Moonlight, there are three phases
- 56:56Speaker 7: to the movie. And it follows, like, the story of, like,
- 57:02Speaker 7: this young black boy who is gay and has, you know,
- 57:06Speaker 7: a terrible life in all kinds of ways. And it
- 57:10Speaker 7: goes in three phases. There's about a third of the
- 57:12Speaker 7: movie is him when he's a young boy, about, like,
- 57:15Speaker 7: eight or ten. And then him again, the second phase
- 57:19Speaker 7: of the movie is him when he's, like, a teenager, like, 15, 16.
- 57:21Speaker 7: And then later.
- 57:26Speaker 7: The last phase of the movie is when he's thinking
- 57:28Speaker 7: of a full-grown man. Straight up, giant, muscular man.
- 57:32Speaker 10: Super hot in your mind.
- 57:33Speaker 7: Super hot.
- 57:34Speaker 10: As we've covered in a previous episode.
- 57:39Speaker 7: His name is Trevante, and he's a gorgeous man. That's all.
- 57:46Speaker 7: But anyways, back to the song.
- 57:47Speaker 10: Now I see where those feelings came from. The feelings.
- 57:51Speaker 7: Oh, many feelings.
- 57:52Speaker 10: Feel the feelings.
- 57:54Speaker 7: And the end credit suite... If you're listening closely, it
- 57:59Speaker 7: also has three phases. It kind of.
- 58:03Speaker 10: Pretty sneaky, sis.
- 58:04Speaker 7: Yeah, it's really haunting and creative, and then it deconstructs.
- 58:11Speaker 7: It kind of falls apart. You can hear everything kind
- 58:14Speaker 7: of going out of sync, and it kind of crumbles.
- 58:19Speaker 7: And then it comes back, and it comes back with
- 58:20Speaker 7: a more complex rhythm. It comes back with sweeping strings
- 58:24Speaker 7: and woodwinds and all this stuff. And then it kind
- 58:28Speaker 7: of crumbled again. And then it comes back with just
- 58:32Speaker 7: this sad, broken violin with piano. And I was like,
- 58:38Speaker 7: oh no. I just was like, I wasn't going to cry.
- 58:43Speaker 2: No.
- 58:44Speaker 7: But I was just like, it mirrored the different phases
- 58:47Speaker 7: of the movie in my mind. And it was just fabulous.
- 58:53Speaker 7: Just fabulous. And I didn't even... So a lot of
- 58:58Speaker 7: the music throughout the movie is also classical music. There's
- 59:02Speaker 7: some really great parts, but I don't recall the rest
- 59:06Speaker 7: of the score so much, but the end credit suite.
- 59:10Speaker 7: is really what stood out for me as being like
- 59:12Speaker 7: this is and it's weird i'm like i want that
- 59:14Speaker 7: in the movie too give me that really powerful i.
- 59:18Speaker 10: Was looking at other stuff on the soundtrack so i
- 59:20Speaker 10: guess they're working in some modern day or at least
- 59:23Speaker 10: of the time music in his real world as well
- 59:26Speaker 10: because it seemed like it bounced back and forth with
- 59:29Speaker 10: some rap and soul and other stuff that I'm assuming
- 59:31Speaker 10: he's growing up in the middle of, so.
- 59:34Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 59:35Speaker 10: That's an interesting mixture on top of that as well.
- 59:37Speaker 7: Yeah, I like that they, because, you know, there's rap
- 59:39Speaker 7: and soul, but then I like that they used a
- 59:43Speaker 7: lot of, like, classical, like, themes and stuff to be like, also,
- 59:46Speaker 7: this life is beautiful, you know.
- 59:48Speaker 10: Well, and again, yeah, even if you're in his world,
- 59:52Speaker 10: doesn't mean you can't enjoy this music.
- 59:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:54Speaker 10: So it's like, It does have, and I like that
- 59:57Speaker 10: structure thing, that if anybody puts that much time and
- 1:00:01Speaker 10: effort into not only creating a song, but also creating
- 1:00:05Speaker 10: a song that mirrors the thing that you're trying to
- 1:00:08Speaker 10: attach it to, it's like that takes a lot more
- 1:00:11Speaker 10: effort than many people would bother to put into it.
- 1:00:14Speaker 10: So I think that kind of stuff is the reason
- 1:00:17Speaker 10: it needs to be nominated. It kind of puts it
- 1:00:20Speaker 10: in a category above all the other stuff, which isn't
- 1:00:23Speaker 10: that why we nominate these.
- 1:00:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:00:26Speaker 7: And I was trying to find something like that, some
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: kind of mirroring, some kind of like the music is
- 1:00:31Speaker 7: telling a story and some of the other scores, and
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: I just wasn't finding it.
- 1:00:35Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:00:36Speaker 10: Again, there's not, I don't know.
- 1:00:39Speaker 7: I'm sure that this won't win the score, but I
- 1:00:43Speaker 7: was just like, this is probably, that and Jackie are
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: probably my favorite scores.
- 1:00:48Speaker 10: Those two are definitely just sort of a cut above
- 1:00:52Speaker 10: what's going on, like, there's a lot of stuff that
- 1:00:56Speaker 10: just becomes like, Oh yeah, this is, I can see
- 1:00:59Speaker 10: this getting nominated. Like, and we'll get to that one later,
- 1:01:02Speaker 10: but yeah, but yeah, I don't know. There are ones.
- 1:01:07Speaker 10: And that's why I said like, like the Jackie one,
- 1:01:09Speaker 10: like sometimes it shocks me when something really interesting and
- 1:01:12Speaker 10: original gets in there.
- 1:01:13Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:01:14Speaker 10: And this one's a little more traditional, but is still not,
- 1:01:18Speaker 10: not a hundred percent like cookie cutter, uh, straight to
- 1:01:23Speaker 10: you know what you always go to.
- 1:01:24Speaker 7: It's not lion it's not well i.
- 1:01:28Speaker 10: Feel like so many of the anything that's a big
- 1:01:30Speaker 10: studio release gets a big name usually like all of
- 1:01:34Speaker 10: these guys are the same group of 20 composers that
- 1:01:37Speaker 10: get nominated over and over and over again so it's
- 1:01:39Speaker 10: like and a lot of times it's like yeah that's
- 1:01:42Speaker 10: fine like it's completely well done and well put together
- 1:01:45Speaker 10: but but it's kind of interchangeable with half the other
- 1:01:48Speaker 10: movies out there. Like you could swap the scores around
- 1:01:51Speaker 10: and I don't know if it would affect the movie.
- 1:01:52Speaker 10: And I feel like that's a very basic problem because
- 1:01:55Speaker 10: the score is supposed to be tied to the movie.
- 1:01:58Speaker 10: It's supposed to be affecting what's going on on screen
- 1:02:01Speaker 10: if you're doing it right. If you're producing the movie
- 1:02:04Speaker 10: the right way, it is supposed to be a key
- 1:02:06Speaker 10: element to what you're doing.
- 1:02:08Speaker 7: And this is making me think, it's a little bit sidetracked,
- 1:02:13Speaker 7: but The fact that something like Lion was nominated, this
- 1:02:17Speaker 7: very basic score, just nothing to it really. But then
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: Arrival didn't get nominated. When Arrival, the score, Johan Johansson,
- 1:02:27Speaker 7: he's a big name, especially like up and coming composer
- 1:02:30Speaker 7: right now.
- 1:02:30Speaker 10: He's been on this show a couple of years now.
- 1:02:32Speaker 7: And the music to Arrival was perfect for that movie.
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: It was so like that movie wouldn't have been the
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: movie it was without that score.
- 1:02:42Speaker 10: That's not the first time I've heard that. There's, and
- 1:02:45Speaker 10: that kind of a lot of different categories for arrival.
- 1:02:48Speaker 10: I've heard like, Hey, why didn't this end up here
- 1:02:51Speaker 10: and here and here? So it's like, I feel like
- 1:02:54Speaker 10: people responded to it. Like, I feel like it didn't
- 1:02:56Speaker 10: do a ton in the box office. It did fine.
- 1:03:00Speaker 10: But it fell just kind of middle of the road.
- 1:03:02Speaker 10: So I think it's one of those, it didn't make
- 1:03:04Speaker 10: a fortune, so it didn't get noticed there. It got
- 1:03:07Speaker 10: pretty good critical acclaim, but not enough that it shot
- 1:03:11Speaker 10: it up to the top of everyone's attention. So when
- 1:03:14Speaker 10: it came time to nominate things, it just fell by
- 1:03:16Speaker 10: the wayside. Because now I hear everybody responding like, actually,
- 1:03:20Speaker 10: that was a really good movie this year. That's one
- 1:03:22Speaker 10: of the best movies I've seen.
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: It's one of the best.
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: Kind of time mind bending that I've seen in a
- 1:03:29Speaker 7: long time.
- 1:03:30Speaker 10: I mean, it's no Dr. Strange, but.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: Oh boy.
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: But yeah.
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: It's a proper science fiction.
- 1:03:39Speaker 10: It's yeah. It's, I think that's what it is. I
- 1:03:41Speaker 10: think it, you get those every year that you're like, well,
- 1:03:44Speaker 10: that kind of sucks because this was easily as good
- 1:03:46Speaker 10: as the things that did get nominated. But again, the
- 1:03:49Speaker 10: Academy Awards is not really a pinpoint of the best
- 1:03:54Speaker 10: of the year. It's just what the Academy decides to
- 1:03:57Speaker 10: not write. It is its own weird little game, so whatever.
- 1:04:03Speaker 10: So now we bounce back to song with How Far
- 1:04:07Speaker 10: I'll Go from Moana. Music and lyric by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
- 1:04:13Speaker 19: I've been staring at the edge of the water Long
- 1:04:18Speaker 19: as I can remember Never really knowing.
- 1:04:23Speaker 9: Why I wish I could be the perfect daughter, but
- 1:04:30Speaker 9: I come back to.
- 1:04:31Speaker 10: The water no matter how hard I try.
- 1:04:37Speaker 9: Every turn I take, every trail I track, every path
- 1:04:41Speaker 9: I make, every road leads back to the place I.
- 1:04:44Speaker 8: Know where I cannot go, where I long to be.
- 1:04:49Speaker 8: I see the line where the sky meets the sea,
- 1:04:51Speaker 8: it calls me And no one knows how far it
- 1:04:57Speaker 8: goes If.
- 1:05:00Speaker 9: The wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: One day I'll know.
- 1:05:08Speaker 10: If I go, there's.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Just no telling how far I'll go.
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: I know everybody on this.
- 1:05:15Speaker 8: Island seems so happy on this island.
- 1:05:19Speaker 10: Everything is by design.
- 1:05:21Speaker 9: I know everybody on this island has a role on
- 1:05:29Speaker 9: this island.
- 1:05:30Speaker 7: So maybe I can roll with mine. I can lead
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: with pride.
- 1:05:36Speaker 10: I can make us strong.
- 1:05:37Speaker 19: I'll be satisfied if I play along.
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: But the voice inside sings a different song.
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: What is wrong with me?
- 1:05:45Speaker 8: See the light as it shines on the sea.
- 1:05:51Speaker 6: It's blinding.
- 1:05:54Speaker 8: But no one knows how deep it goes.
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: And it seems like it's calling out to.
- 1:06:02Speaker 8: Me So come find me and let me know.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: What's beyond that line?
- 1:06:10Speaker 16: Will I cross that line?
- 1:06:12Speaker 10: The line with the star is the sea, it holds.
- 1:06:16Speaker 8: Me And no one knows how far it goes If
- 1:06:23Speaker 8: the wind is my sail on the sea, stay behind me.
- 1:06:27Speaker 8: One day I will know how far I'll go.
- 1:06:39Speaker 10: Which I was like, what? I kind of know that name.
- 1:06:43Speaker 10: I'm one of the few people in the world that's
- 1:06:44Speaker 10: not swept up in Hamilton fever.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:48Speaker 10: Because I kind of don't care. But I mean, whatever.
- 1:06:50Speaker 10: It seems really impressive and well done, but I think
- 1:06:53Speaker 10: all the attention I could have ever had has been
- 1:06:55Speaker 10: beaten out of me by now. Because I've heard so
- 1:06:58Speaker 10: many people talk about it to this point. I'm just like,
- 1:07:01Speaker 10: maybe if I give it a decade or so and
- 1:07:03Speaker 10: it has a revival and I go see it, I
- 1:07:05Speaker 10: might appreciate it. Well, I kept asking people.
- 1:07:07Speaker 12: People kept saying, oh, have you seen Hamilton? Have you
- 1:07:09Speaker 12: seen Hamilton? I kept saying, well, what's it about? Because
- 1:07:12Speaker 12: all I knew was the title at this point.
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: Sounds boring.
- 1:07:15Speaker 17: And for like six months, the only answer I got was,
- 1:07:17Speaker 17: it's amazing.
- 1:07:19Speaker 12: That's okay, but what's it about?
- 1:07:20Speaker 10: Well, it's great.
- 1:07:22Speaker 12: Okay.
- 1:07:22Speaker 10: It's not answering my question.
- 1:07:24Speaker 12: Yeah. And when someone described to me, well, Alexander Hamilton
- 1:07:29Speaker 12: with hip hop, I was like, that sounds stupid. Yeah.
- 1:07:31Speaker 10: You know?
- 1:07:32Speaker 12: And normally, I would be on board with that sort
- 1:07:34Speaker 12: of thing.
- 1:07:34Speaker 17: But then when I found out it was serious, it
- 1:07:36Speaker 17: was like, I don't care.
- 1:07:37Speaker 10: Well, I feel like it could go horribly, horribly wrong.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:41Speaker 10: It seems like they balanced it nicely.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:07:44Speaker 10: But I'm just like, again, your knee-jerk reaction is probably
- 1:07:48Speaker 10: the correct one. You should be like, oh no, that's
- 1:07:50Speaker 10: a terrible idea. And luckily, these people are talented and
- 1:07:54Speaker 10: they made it work.
- 1:07:55Speaker 12: I'm glad for the writer, the kid who's apparently done
- 1:07:59Speaker 12: quite well for himself with it. I'm glad everybody likes it,
- 1:08:03Speaker 12: but I just don't care.
- 1:08:06Speaker 10: Pulitzer Prize, two Grammys, an Emmy, a MacArthur Fellowship, three
- 1:08:10Speaker 10: Tony Awards. I guess he's done okay for himself. He's
- 1:08:14Speaker 10: done all right. But I don't know that he's going
- 1:08:16Speaker 10: to win for Moana. I don't know. I don't have
- 1:08:21Speaker 10: a problem with this song. I think this song is fine.
- 1:08:25Speaker 10: It is one of those that within the context of
- 1:08:28Speaker 10: what you're presented in the movie, I feel like it
- 1:08:31Speaker 10: belongs in the movie.
- 1:08:32Speaker 17: Right.
- 1:08:33Speaker 10: So it is harder to separate it. Here's the thing.
- 1:08:38Speaker 10: This is a shock. Disney's really smart.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:08:42Speaker 10: Because here's what they always do. They're like, okay, we're
- 1:08:45Speaker 10: going to take the normal one that's in the movie
- 1:08:48Speaker 10: and we're assuming it's going to get nominated because we're
- 1:08:50Speaker 10: Disney and we make musicals and that's what happens all
- 1:08:52Speaker 10: the time. But we're also smart and we've got this
- 1:08:56Speaker 10: entire arsenal of talented musicians and singers. and 12-year-old girls
- 1:09:01Speaker 10: on our payroll. So I'm like, we're also going to
- 1:09:03Speaker 10: re-record it and put it out. And that's the thing.
- 1:09:06Speaker 10: This was one of those, I'd heard this song in
- 1:09:08Speaker 10: its pop version for months now and didn't realize it
- 1:09:12Speaker 10: was the same song from this because it's just dialed
- 1:09:15Speaker 10: a little differently. And I feel like the single version-
- 1:09:19Speaker 10: kind of works better as a song a lot better
- 1:09:22Speaker 10: like the more i heard that i was like this
- 1:09:24Speaker 10: is actually kind of a cool song that works on
- 1:09:26Speaker 10: its own and all it took was a minor bit
- 1:09:29Speaker 10: of retooling because then i went back and re-listened i'm
- 1:09:31Speaker 10: like no the lyrics are all still there but they
- 1:09:33Speaker 10: don't feel so clunky and out of place in the
- 1:09:36Speaker 10: single version so i'm like it's it's not the song's
- 1:09:39Speaker 10: doing it's just the way that it stands in the
- 1:09:42Speaker 10: movie it needs to be in the movie so it's
- 1:09:44Speaker 10: one of those like it it suffers from probably being
- 1:09:48Speaker 10: good because it's supposed to be part of the movie.
- 1:09:49Speaker 10: It's supposed to tell the story of what's going on
- 1:09:52Speaker 10: in the movie. So to have it seem like a
- 1:09:55Speaker 10: separate thing in the middle of the movie would probably
- 1:09:57Speaker 10: be a mistake from that aspect. But to listen to
- 1:10:00Speaker 10: it from the outside, it's hard to listen to the
- 1:10:03Speaker 10: theatrical version, but I feel like the single version works
- 1:10:06Speaker 10: really well.
- 1:10:06Speaker 8: See the light where the sky meets the sea It
- 1:10:08Speaker 8: comes to me No one knows How far it goes.
- 1:10:17Speaker 11: Yeah the the theatrical version i don't.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Feel is representative of.
- 1:10:26Speaker 7: Disney's best no i mean i i am it actually
- 1:10:27Speaker 7: feels kind.
- 1:10:30Speaker 10: Of Like, isn't this what every girl sings about a
- 1:10:46Speaker 10: third of the way into a Disney movie?
- 1:10:48Speaker 12: It seems like it's not quite finished. You know, like
- 1:10:52Speaker 12: the Disney writers could have taken a couple more swings
- 1:10:55Speaker 12: at it and maybe tightened it up a little bit.
- 1:10:56Speaker 12: And the song that, because again, I haven't seen the movie,
- 1:11:00Speaker 12: but I was watching these on YouTube right after Is it.
- 1:11:04Speaker 10: The rock song?
- 1:11:05Speaker 17: Yeah, it came the rock song. And I thought that
- 1:11:07Speaker 17: was a much better song.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:09Speaker 7: I'm surprised that this one almost seems like a throwaway
- 1:11:12Speaker 7: song in the movie.
- 1:11:14Speaker 10: Again, I feel like it's the safe bet because you
- 1:11:18Speaker 10: can almost get it without seeing the movie.
- 1:11:20Speaker 18: Sure.
- 1:11:21Speaker 10: Again, it's the same song that Belle sings. It's the
- 1:11:24Speaker 10: same song that Ariel sings.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:25Speaker 10: I'm stuck in this world and I don't want to
- 1:11:26Speaker 10: be stuck in this world and I really hope I
- 1:11:28Speaker 10: get to go do other things because I'm stuck here
- 1:11:30Speaker 10: and I'm probably a princess by the end of this
- 1:11:33Speaker 10: movie but I don't know yet and I really want
- 1:11:35Speaker 10: to get out there and do other things and like
- 1:11:37Speaker 10: I feel like they all kind of hit that beat
- 1:11:39Speaker 10: that's why I always like when they do very unconventional
- 1:11:41Speaker 10: Disney stories that don't have to go down that same
- 1:11:45Speaker 10: road over and over again but This one, I mean,
- 1:11:47Speaker 10: it actually seems like a pretty different story, but somehow
- 1:11:50Speaker 10: they still found a way to cram this song into it.
- 1:11:52Speaker 12: Everything I've heard about this movie, again, haven't seen it,
- 1:11:55Speaker 12: but everything I've heard, it's really well done.
- 1:11:57Speaker 10: Yeah, that's what I've heard.
- 1:11:59Speaker 12: That's why my expectations for this song were so high,
- 1:12:02Speaker 12: and then I actually listened to it, and I'm like, yeah.
- 1:12:05Speaker 12: It's like, yeah.
- 1:12:07Speaker 10: But it was weird having heard the other version so much.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: Sure.
- 1:12:11Speaker 10: Because I'm like, but it can be a good song.
- 1:12:14Speaker 12: It can be a great song.
- 1:12:14Speaker 10: I feel like it's a great song when they do
- 1:12:17Speaker 10: their Alessa Carver version. But yeah, within the movie, it's
- 1:12:22Speaker 10: just kind of boring. And can I go ahead and say,
- 1:12:26Speaker 10: is it not surprising and a little infuriating? Well, of course,
- 1:12:30Speaker 10: The Rock and Sing. Is there anything that bastard can't do?
- 1:12:33Speaker 20: Right.
- 1:12:33Speaker 10: God damn.
- 1:12:35Speaker 12: How can you.
- 1:12:36Speaker 17: Not love that guy?
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: He is the perfect man.
- 1:12:38Speaker 10: He really kind of is. It's really annoying. I'm like,
- 1:12:41Speaker 10: he's so damn pretty. And look how ripped he is. Oh,
- 1:12:44Speaker 10: and he can sing and dance too? Man, what the hell?
- 1:12:47Speaker 12: Well, as I was watching that, I expected his voice
- 1:12:50Speaker 12: to change just a little when he started singing. Because,
- 1:12:53Speaker 12: you know, Disney has done that many times. They'll have
- 1:12:56Speaker 12: their primary cast for the... normal dialogue and then they'll
- 1:13:00Speaker 12: have professional singers to sing.
- 1:13:02Speaker 10: Broadway singer to do the song.
- 1:13:03Speaker 12: And, you know, I can't knock him for that. But
- 1:13:06Speaker 12: then here comes the rock and once again proves that
- 1:13:09Speaker 12: we're all failures.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:10Speaker 10: It can't be as cool as the rock. That's all
- 1:13:12Speaker 10: there is to it. So, yeah, he's not even in this.
- 1:13:17Speaker 10: But that was my like it came up next on mine, too.
- 1:13:19Speaker 10: And I was just like, damn it. Of course, he
- 1:13:21Speaker 10: can sing.
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: Yeah, of course.
- 1:13:24Speaker 10: Bastard doing everything good. Pissing me off. being so damn
- 1:13:31Speaker 10: pretty it ain't right the tooth fairy was on yesterday
- 1:13:34Speaker 10: and just like look at him he's not right and
- 1:13:38Speaker 10: then he takes his shirt off in the locker room
- 1:13:39Speaker 10: and i'm like look at.
- 1:13:40Speaker 17: Him and he's funny and he's funny he's funny and
- 1:13:43Speaker 17: he can act i mean yeah.
- 1:13:45Speaker 10: He's yeah he's good at everything it's annoying.
- 1:13:48Speaker 7: Have either you guys seen the um uh after what
- 1:13:53Speaker 7: was that the cia is it the cia movie or
- 1:13:55Speaker 7: whatever with him and kevin.
- 1:13:56Speaker 10: Hart yeah i haven't seen it but.
- 1:13:58Speaker 7: But they uh They had like this, they sat across
- 1:14:02Speaker 7: from each other in chairs and did impressions of each other.
- 1:14:06Speaker 7: So The Rock was doing an impression of Kevin and
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: it's so good.
- 1:14:10Speaker 10: Oh my goodness.
- 1:14:11Speaker 7: You need to YouTube that right away.
- 1:14:13Speaker 17: He was the best part in Reno 911, the movie.
- 1:14:17Speaker 10: He's done that a lot of times.
- 1:14:18Speaker 12: You know, terrible movie and then along comes The Rock
- 1:14:21Speaker 12: and for like two minutes, I'm like, well, this is something.
- 1:14:23Speaker 10: Did you see Be Cool? See what? Be Cool?
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: No, I haven't.
- 1:14:28Speaker 10: It's, To come from, it's a sequel to a really
- 1:14:31Speaker 10: good movie, it's terrible. He, and it was one of
- 1:14:35Speaker 10: the first times I saw him act, and I was
- 1:14:37Speaker 10: just like, oh my god, that guy's amazing. Like, in
- 1:14:40Speaker 10: that first, you know, one of the first times he's
- 1:14:42Speaker 10: ever on screen, I'm just like, that dude has so
- 1:14:45Speaker 10: much charisma. And his playing thing, again, he was still
- 1:14:50Speaker 10: full-on wrestling at that point. He was a big name.
- 1:14:53Speaker 10: He's doing a very unlike himself, just completely unafraid to
- 1:14:58Speaker 10: smash his ego that he's built up in the ring
- 1:15:01Speaker 10: in these ridiculous performances. Again, I.
- 1:15:05Speaker 12: He seems like such a nice guy.
- 1:15:06Speaker 10: I do kind of want to be best friends with him.
- 1:15:09Speaker 10: Is it too much to ask to be best friends?
- 1:15:10Speaker 17: If I'm walking down the street and he was like,
- 1:15:12Speaker 17: hey man, will you wash my car for me?
- 1:15:13Speaker 12: I'd be like, okay, Mr.
- 1:15:14Speaker 10: Johnson, you got it. Be like, okay, can you pick
- 1:15:17Speaker 10: me up?
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:15:18Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 1:15:20Speaker 10: Just want to be cradled in The Rock's arms. Is
- 1:15:22Speaker 10: that too much to ask?
- 1:15:25Speaker 12: Is he still The Rock or is it officially?
- 1:15:27Speaker 10: I think officially he's Dwayne. I don't think.
- 1:15:29Speaker 12: He'll always be The Rock.
- 1:15:29Speaker 10: I think he got on good terms so that he
- 1:15:32Speaker 10: can still come back and perform as The Rock. Because
- 1:15:35Speaker 10: I thought they brought him back a few years ago.
- 1:15:37Speaker 10: But I don't think it got to be the fight
- 1:15:39Speaker 10: that like Hogan did. Where they owned his identity.
- 1:15:42Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:15:44Speaker 10: So, I think he can be whoever he wants because
- 1:15:47Speaker 10: he's The Rock.
- 1:15:47Speaker 12: Because he's The Rock.
- 1:15:48Speaker 10: Because he's Dwayne and Dwayne is freaking magic.
- 1:15:51Speaker 7: And if there was litigation, all he'd have to do
- 1:15:54Speaker 7: is show those pearly whites.
- 1:15:55Speaker 10: Yeah, he'd just give them that smile. Arch that eyebrow.
- 1:15:58Speaker 19: Like, all right.
- 1:16:00Speaker 10: All right, gavel.
- 1:16:01Speaker 12: Binge press the jury.
- 1:16:03Speaker 7: Gavel.
- 1:16:03Speaker 6: Gavel.
- 1:16:05Speaker 10: You guys give him a lot of money because look.
- 1:16:07Speaker 6: At that smile.
- 1:16:10Speaker 10: This episode brought to you by Dwayne The Rock Johnson.
- 1:16:14Speaker 7: Because everything is brought to you by Dwayne The Rock Johnson.
- 1:16:18Speaker 10: Everything good, anyway. All right, so we are rounding out
- 1:16:23Speaker 10: score with Passengers by Thomas Newman. This is the Starship Avalon, parentheses,
- 1:16:30Speaker 10: main title, close parentheses.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:19:29Speaker 10: So this was the one I was referring to. I
- 1:19:32Speaker 10: don't even think Again, it's very well done. And Thomas
- 1:19:37Speaker 10: Newman's been on here in previous years as well. That's
- 1:19:39Speaker 10: what I'm saying. It's the same five guys that pop
- 1:19:41Speaker 10: up on this episode over and over and over again.
- 1:19:43Speaker 10: So it's like, obviously, he's A-list. He's top of the game.
- 1:19:46Speaker 10: He's who you want to go to when you can't
- 1:19:48Speaker 10: get John Williams.
- 1:19:50Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:19:51Speaker 10: It's like John Williams and a bunch of other guys.
- 1:19:53Speaker 10: It's like the other five guys and then occasionally a
- 1:19:55Speaker 10: wild card mixes in there. But he's one of the
- 1:19:58Speaker 10: other people that everybody goes to. And he's accomplished. He's
- 1:20:02Speaker 10: well done. versed in this stuff. He knows what he's doing,
- 1:20:05Speaker 10: but it's also just really kind of boring. Does that
- 1:20:08Speaker 10: mean that's also your take?
- 1:20:11Speaker 7: I liked the use of... Was it a Rhodes piano?
- 1:20:16Speaker 7: Or was it like a vibraphone or something? But it
- 1:20:20Speaker 7: gave like this 80s vibe. It almost felt like I
- 1:20:24Speaker 7: was listening to the It Follows soundtrack.
- 1:20:26Speaker 9: For a second.
- 1:20:27Speaker 10: I was like, oh.
- 1:20:27Speaker 21: I wish.
- 1:20:28Speaker 10: I do like that soundtrack.
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: But yeah, it was kind of like one note, but
- 1:20:33Speaker 7: It felt.
- 1:20:34Speaker 12: Though, like a sci-fi score. Whereas, like, what you were
- 1:20:38Speaker 12: talking about earlier, you could take most of these other
- 1:20:40Speaker 12: scores and switch them around and nobody would notice. This
- 1:20:43Speaker 12: one did kind of seem like it fit that whole thing.
- 1:20:47Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:20:47Speaker 7: It was, like, minimalist and subdued in this way that, like,
- 1:20:50Speaker 7: was probably good for, you know, a spacey movie.
- 1:20:53Speaker 10: So I was going to say, could you swap it
- 1:20:55Speaker 10: out with, like, Interstellar?
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: No.
- 1:20:57Speaker 10: And not know the difference.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:20:59Speaker 10: But I'm saying, if you didn't know the difference, could
- 1:21:02Speaker 10: it be in the background and you're just like, hey,
- 1:21:04Speaker 10: it's spacey.
- 1:21:04Speaker 7: Yeah, probably.
- 1:21:06Speaker 10: Like, that's the thing. Between the two, they're both their
- 1:21:09Speaker 10: own weird thing, but I'm like, are either so identifiable
- 1:21:13Speaker 10: to that property or are they just generic sci-fi minimalist
- 1:21:17Speaker 10: kind of stuff?
- 1:21:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:21:18Speaker 10: Under the right circumstances. I don't know. That movie has
- 1:21:22Speaker 10: some issues anyway. I did see that one. It is
- 1:21:25Speaker 10: like this is... One of the only things it got
- 1:21:28Speaker 10: that I know of. It might have gotten some of
- 1:21:30Speaker 10: the tech stuff, but it certainly wasn't pulling any of
- 1:21:32Speaker 10: the big showing performance stuff. It's got problems, but I
- 1:21:38Speaker 10: liked it more than most people that I've heard. A
- 1:21:40Speaker 10: lot of people had really big problems with it. I
- 1:21:43Speaker 10: think it does, story-wise, leave a big hole in it
- 1:21:47Speaker 10: that I think it could have been handled a little
- 1:21:50Speaker 10: differently and it wouldn't ask the viewer to make this
- 1:21:53Speaker 10: huge leap. that the character also has to make. I
- 1:21:58Speaker 10: think there are ways around it, but those are all writing.
- 1:22:00Speaker 10: I think otherwise, I think performances are great. I think
- 1:22:03Speaker 10: that the special effects are good and the score is
- 1:22:06Speaker 10: fine too. It's just, I don't think, yeah, I think
- 1:22:09Speaker 10: that's what it is. It's fine. It doesn't hold up
- 1:22:11Speaker 10: to some of the other stuff that are out there
- 1:22:14Speaker 10: that are probably a little better. But again, I don't
- 1:22:17Speaker 10: think it's lacking in any way other than.
- 1:22:19Speaker 7: It's like he used the right instrumentation, but he just
- 1:22:22Speaker 7: didn't go the distance.
- 1:22:25Speaker 10: I've said that in previous episodes like this as well
- 1:22:29Speaker 10: i'm like what do you do when you've done a
- 1:22:32Speaker 10: lot of this stuff like i think my original.
- 1:22:36Speaker 12: Well we talked about that last year with john williams
- 1:22:38Speaker 12: yeah how do you approach a new property.
- 1:22:42Speaker 10: When you've done especially somebody like him who's done hundreds
- 1:22:45Speaker 10: and hundreds of pieces over the years so it's like even,
- 1:22:48Speaker 10: even somebody newer. I'm just like, when you've done it
- 1:22:52Speaker 10: a good amount of times and you're still kind of
- 1:22:54Speaker 10: dealing with Oscar caliber movies and the subject matter that they,
- 1:22:58Speaker 10: and they, they kind of want the same thing, you know, when,
- 1:23:00Speaker 10: producers come to you, they probably don't want you doing
- 1:23:03Speaker 10: something weird.
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:23:04Speaker 10: Yeah. Out on the window.
- 1:23:05Speaker 19: There's some limitations there.
- 1:23:06Speaker 10: They want something safe that they can build and bring
- 1:23:09Speaker 10: in normal audiences. They don't want you to do anything
- 1:23:11Speaker 10: too weird. So it's like, I can kind of see
- 1:23:14Speaker 10: where you're probably led down this road of like, you know, okay,
- 1:23:17Speaker 10: give them what they want kind of thing.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:23:19Speaker 10: Especially when they're throwing you a huge studio check.
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: This is a paycheck score.
- 1:23:23Speaker 10: And I got two more coming this year and I
- 1:23:25Speaker 10: got three more coming the year after that. So I'm like,
- 1:23:27Speaker 10: I can see where you don't start taking weird chances
- 1:23:30Speaker 10: once you get this level of successful. So I don't
- 1:23:34Speaker 10: fault him really. I think it's fine. It's just, it's
- 1:23:36Speaker 10: not doing anything outside the box.
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:23:41Speaker 10: He's been a lot. I was going back and looking
- 1:23:44Speaker 10: like going back to like little women in the nineties. Like,
- 1:23:49Speaker 10: American Beauty and Road to Perdition and like WALL-E like
- 1:23:55Speaker 10: which again I love WALL-E so but even like Bridge
- 1:23:58Speaker 10: of Spies recently we've seen this guy's work he's definitely
- 1:24:02Speaker 10: a solid performer yeah all right are we ready to
- 1:24:07Speaker 10: round this thing out with the big finale song yeah
- 1:24:10Speaker 10: the big song and dance number to go out on
- 1:24:11Speaker 10: it kind of is I mean yeah for once it
- 1:24:14Speaker 10: is you don't always get that in one of these
- 1:24:16Speaker 10: episodes sometimes it's just 10 10 Songs that end up
- 1:24:19Speaker 10: in every Oscar. But this one is literally a song
- 1:24:22Speaker 10: and dance number. This is City of Stars from La
- 1:24:25Speaker 10: La Land by Emma and Ryan. Written by Justin Hurwitz.
- 1:24:30Speaker 10: Once again, lyrics by whatever that guy's name is.
- 1:24:34Speaker 20: Binge?
- 1:24:35Speaker 6: Binge.
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: Ask.
- 1:24:37Speaker 10: Justin Paul. Justin, you're going to have to start taking
- 1:24:40Speaker 10: the lead.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:24:43Speaker 10: So we will go out with that. But I guess beforehand,
- 1:24:47Speaker 10: what are your thoughts on it? Again, I just sort
- 1:24:51Speaker 10: of refer back to most of what I said on
- 1:24:54Speaker 10: the other two. I feel like this falls somewhere in
- 1:24:56Speaker 10: between the past two. That's kind of why I wanted
- 1:24:59Speaker 10: to just round it out with this one because it's
- 1:25:02Speaker 10: bits and pieces of both of those. I think it
- 1:25:05Speaker 10: goes back to the score and it brings those... motifs
- 1:25:10Speaker 10: back in and you've got the piano hook that continues
- 1:25:12Speaker 10: through the entirety of the movie both in the score
- 1:25:15Speaker 10: and in the songs and all of the above it's
- 1:25:17Speaker 10: just it runs through the movie but on top of
- 1:25:22Speaker 10: that it also kind of comes together and has a
- 1:25:26Speaker 10: little of that like heartfelt stuff to it because it
- 1:25:29Speaker 10: is them sort of going through this again this is
- 1:25:32Speaker 10: the other thing that I think works is like the
- 1:25:34Speaker 10: heart of it is also not just their relationship I
- 1:25:37Speaker 10: feel like that's secondary to the offering yourself up at
- 1:25:42Speaker 10: the altar of wanting to be a celebrity of wanting
- 1:25:44Speaker 10: to be a star in Hollywood and like giving up
- 1:25:47Speaker 10: everything to do it in the process is so much
- 1:25:51Speaker 10: of what I think is important to this movie. And like,
- 1:25:54Speaker 10: so you get, you know, from the singing and dancing
- 1:25:57Speaker 10: intro to something like city of stars, which is always
- 1:26:01Speaker 10: back to them. Just like, you know, we're, we're giving
- 1:26:05Speaker 10: ourselves to this idea more than anything else. And I,
- 1:26:08Speaker 10: again i think it nails it on that stuff i
- 1:26:11Speaker 10: think there's other issues minorly along the way but i
- 1:26:14Speaker 10: think it definitely kind of nails that concept which is
- 1:26:18Speaker 10: probably the most important concept of the movie.
- 1:26:21Speaker 12: Well this this one almost had that big moment that
- 1:26:24Speaker 12: i was looking for in all the other songs but
- 1:26:26Speaker 12: it's still not quite there.
- 1:26:28Speaker 10: That's the thing it's not in in seeing it it's
- 1:26:31Speaker 10: not quite as big a musical production as you would
- 1:26:34Speaker 10: expect right like there is a big finale but it
- 1:26:37Speaker 10: still is more interesting and creative from a filmmaking standpoint
- 1:26:42Speaker 10: it's not the kind of thing that would be easy
- 1:26:44Speaker 10: to reproduce if you're doing this as like a play
- 1:26:46Speaker 10: like it works because it's a film and they're kind
- 1:26:50Speaker 10: of focusing on that which is fine for me but
- 1:26:52Speaker 10: I'm just like for people that come in just wanting
- 1:26:54Speaker 10: the big you know Broadway songs this isn't Broadway and
- 1:26:57Speaker 10: they're not doing it that way so it doesn't it's
- 1:27:00Speaker 10: kind of like they didn't try to do that. Like,
- 1:27:02Speaker 10: I feel like they were trying to.
- 1:27:03Speaker 12: Do something different. They may have tried to do the opposite.
- 1:27:05Speaker 10: Yeah, they're trying to, like, make it a little more,
- 1:27:09Speaker 10: like before, it's sort of more grounded in these people
- 1:27:12Speaker 10: that probably wouldn't be in a big Broadway number. Right.
- 1:27:15Speaker 10: Because even, like, the watching Ryan and Emma do it,
- 1:27:18Speaker 10: they do a great version, but they still feel like
- 1:27:21Speaker 10: sort of regular people thrust into this idea, and... Again,
- 1:27:25Speaker 10: I like that. I feel like that's why I'm more
- 1:27:28Speaker 10: taken with this, I think, from that aspect. Because it
- 1:27:31Speaker 10: is about them trying to be part of this star-studded thing.
- 1:27:35Speaker 10: They're trying to cram themselves into Hollywood and celebrity and performance.
- 1:27:42Speaker 10: So it's not immediately going to be perfect. I don't know.
- 1:27:45Speaker 10: I think there's a little of that that draws me
- 1:27:47Speaker 10: into that.
- 1:27:47Speaker 14: But I don't know.
- 1:27:49Speaker 10: I guess musically, what were your guys' thoughts?
- 1:27:53Speaker 7: I mean, it was good. I prefer Emma's solo to
- 1:27:59Speaker 7: the duet with Ryan.
- 1:28:01Speaker 10: Again, I think this shows like.
- 1:28:04Speaker 7: My favorite part of the song was her laughing. So
- 1:28:08Speaker 7: like her little laugh, I was like, yes.
- 1:28:10Speaker 10: I feel like it shows more of his weaknesses than her.
- 1:28:13Speaker 10: I think hers come through and just make her more endearing.
- 1:28:16Speaker 10: I wonder who else they could have cast.
- 1:28:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:28:19Speaker 6: It's like.
- 1:28:20Speaker 10: And I'm fine with him. Like, I've kind of come
- 1:28:23Speaker 10: around him on the last couple of movies. But again,
- 1:28:26Speaker 10: he's so unlikable in even this character a lot of times.
- 1:28:30Speaker 10: And I'm just like, he needs to. That's the thing.
- 1:28:33Speaker 12: I don't think he's a bad actor. it's just the
- 1:28:35Speaker 12: way he portrays people is as unlikable you know as
- 1:28:40Speaker 12: unlikable people and i don't know.
- 1:28:42Speaker 17: If it's just the roles he gets or just the
- 1:28:44Speaker 17: way he.
- 1:28:44Speaker 10: The movie was just in with russell crowe that last
- 1:28:48Speaker 10: year like yeah the nice guys nice guys yeah a
- 1:28:51Speaker 10: good guy like he's he's very unlikable like almost like
- 1:28:57Speaker 10: It works in that type of movie.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:28:59Speaker 10: Because that's that level of comedy and he's supposed to
- 1:29:03Speaker 10: kind of be the one that's put upon the whole movie.
- 1:29:06Speaker 10: So it's okay for him to be not likable because
- 1:29:08Speaker 10: he's about to get beat to hell along the way,
- 1:29:11Speaker 10: almost as punishment for being a jerk the whole time.
- 1:29:14Speaker 10: I feel like it works in that. It's like he
- 1:29:17Speaker 10: kind of brought a little of that over into this movie.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:29:21Speaker 10: You're not redeeming yourself by the end of this. You
- 1:29:23Speaker 10: just get caught up in a weird relationship, which that's
- 1:29:26Speaker 10: its own thing. Like you can't, I don't know. It's,
- 1:29:29Speaker 10: it's really hard to try to balance those two. So
- 1:29:32Speaker 10: I feel like if he would have been a little
- 1:29:33Speaker 10: more charming and it's funny cause that's the way they've
- 1:29:36Speaker 10: portrayed him in the media since he first broke through
- 1:29:39Speaker 10: and like, right. People love him and girls go crazy
- 1:29:41Speaker 10: for him. And I just get there and go, eh,
- 1:29:43Speaker 10: he's all right i guess i mean he's a decent
- 1:29:45Speaker 10: actor i just he needs to have a little more
- 1:29:48Speaker 10: of that charm he needs to be a little more
- 1:29:49Speaker 10: like the rock and then you would and then you'd
- 1:29:52Speaker 10: be like all right well that's fine i forgive him
- 1:29:55Speaker 10: if he's a little if he's a little more charismatic
- 1:29:57Speaker 10: if he's got a little more charm that he's working
- 1:30:00Speaker 10: on her it also kind of works on the audience
- 1:30:02Speaker 10: and i don't ever get that from him so i
- 1:30:04Speaker 10: don't really forgive him for anything musically along the way
- 1:30:07Speaker 10: either i'm just like you started a weird register. You know,
- 1:30:11Speaker 10: just like, that's a weird tone you even start at
- 1:30:14Speaker 10: on this song. So, I don't know. Those are my thoughts.
- 1:30:20Speaker 7: Yep, that's pretty much the short of it.
- 1:30:23Speaker 10: But otherwise, it's still a pretty impressive movie. I was
- 1:30:27Speaker 10: glad I saw it. And I'm assuming it will sweep
- 1:30:31Speaker 10: the Oscars.
- 1:30:32Speaker 12: I get the feeling it will.
- 1:30:34Speaker 10: It feels like it's pretty, pretty high on the, uh,
- 1:30:38Speaker 10: probability here and I'll probably both of these categories I
- 1:30:44Speaker 10: feel like pretty likely I don't know between these two
- 1:30:47Speaker 10: songs though where do you think it's going man I
- 1:30:51Speaker 10: think I like hers better but I'm.
- 1:30:53Speaker 7: Like this is more of the big show but I
- 1:30:54Speaker 7: think the academy is gonna be like I want you
- 1:30:56Speaker 7: know Ryan Gosling.
- 1:30:57Speaker 10: And Emma Stone to sing at the Oscars yeah singing
- 1:31:00Speaker 10: and dancing duet that's the old school musical way so
- 1:31:04Speaker 10: maybe that's yeah maybe that's where we're going but Again,
- 1:31:08Speaker 10: it's a good movie. There are many other things I
- 1:31:11Speaker 10: would like less if they won. So I'm like, I'm
- 1:31:14Speaker 10: fine with this one winning anything they want to. Again,
- 1:31:17Speaker 10: I give credit to the filmmaker for just trying to
- 1:31:20Speaker 10: do something as weird and unconventional as this is. Granted,
- 1:31:23Speaker 10: now it seems well-financed and mainstream compared to other stuff.
- 1:31:27Speaker 10: But I'm like, really? Coming into this, trying to pitch
- 1:31:29Speaker 10: this idea? Had to suck. So the fact that he
- 1:31:32Speaker 10: made it work and made it work as well as
- 1:31:34Speaker 10: it does is pretty impressive.
- 1:31:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:31:38Speaker 10: There you go.
- 1:31:39Speaker 8: Oh, you know what?
- 1:31:41Speaker 10: I think we're good.
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: Thanks for coming in.
- 1:31:43Speaker 10: So, anything other than these songs? Any predictions to make?
- 1:31:47Speaker 10: Any words to pass on to people?
- 1:31:50Speaker 7: I do not.
- 1:31:52Speaker 12: I'm not even sure what else is nominated other than
- 1:31:54Speaker 12: in the musical category.
- 1:31:57Speaker 10: Well, I will say, if you don't trust the Academy's
- 1:32:01Speaker 10: voting and you yourself would like to vote, the Oscars
- 1:32:04Speaker 10: won't let you do that. But the foilers will. So
- 1:32:07Speaker 10: email producer at moviemeltdown.com and you can actually get in
- 1:32:11Speaker 10: on the voting for our awards, which are way more
- 1:32:14Speaker 10: prestigious than an Oscar. But, you know, whatever. So feel
- 1:32:20Speaker 10: free to do that. Otherwise, in the near future, we'll
- 1:32:23Speaker 10: be back to watch the Oscars and then ignore it
- 1:32:26Speaker 10: and just announce our own awards anyway. Yep.
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:32:31Speaker 10: If you want to get in on that, you can
- 1:32:33Speaker 10: clog an artery with the rest of it. I believe
- 1:32:36Speaker 10: she's signed on to host it once again. If you'd
- 1:32:41Speaker 10: like to show up and eat large amounts of pork
- 1:32:43Speaker 10: and not pay attention to the Oscars.
- 1:32:45Speaker 12: I don't know that I've ever said no to that.
- 1:32:48Speaker 7: There's going to be queso. There's going to be pigs
- 1:32:51Speaker 7: in blankets. There's going to be lots of bacon.
- 1:32:54Speaker 10: Well, I mean, let me bust out bologna for you
- 1:32:57Speaker 10: because that's what's going to do it. Right over the top.
- 1:33:01Speaker 10: Fancy foods like bologna.
- 1:33:04Speaker 7: Anything that a pig is, he brings.
- 1:33:06Speaker 10: It's just a sick, sad game that I keep.
- 1:33:09Speaker 12: I had deep fried pigtails the other day, and it
- 1:33:11Speaker 12: was surprisingly delicious.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: Nice.
- 1:33:12Speaker 10: All righty then.
- 1:33:13Speaker 12: If you can find it, I highly recommend it.
- 1:33:15Speaker 7: They're deep fried, I'm sure. I'll like them. Where do
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: you eat them?
- 1:33:19Speaker 12: Some restaurant up in Cincinnati somewhere. Some hipster hot dog place.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:33:26Speaker 17: But that was on the menu on the appetizers, and
- 1:33:29Speaker 17: everyone was like, let's have that.
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:33:30Speaker 12: And I was like, I don't know. But I tried
- 1:33:33Speaker 12: a couple, and they were delicious.
- 1:33:36Speaker 10: Good to know. I don't know if we'll get that
- 1:33:38Speaker 10: on our menu, but I'll see what I can do.
- 1:33:41Speaker 10: So prepare yourself. Come back for that. And email me
- 1:33:44Speaker 10: between now and then, and you can be involved in
- 1:33:46Speaker 10: that whole evening, because we'll be tallying up your votes.
- 1:33:49Speaker 10: So until then, I will remind you, Get a Life
- 1:33:52Speaker 10: will provide the Oscar-nominated soundtrack.
- 1:33:54Speaker 20: For City of stars Are you shining just for me?
- 1:34:13Speaker 20: City of stars There's so much that I can't.
- 1:34:19Speaker 6: See Who knows.
- 1:34:26Speaker 20: I felt it from the first embrace I shared with.
- 1:34:30Speaker 16: You That now.
- 1:34:35Speaker 19: Dreams may finally come true city of stars just one
- 1:34:45Speaker 19: thing everybody.
- 1:34:47Speaker 11: Wants there in the bars and through the smoke screen
- 1:34:55Speaker 11: of the crowded restaurants it's love Yes, all we're looking
- 1:35:04Speaker 11: for is love from someone else.
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: A rush. A glance. A touch.
- 1:35:13Speaker 15: A dance.
- 1:35:14Speaker 10: A look in somebody's eyes. To light up the skies.
- 1:35:19Speaker 10: To open the world.
- 1:35:21Speaker 6: And send a reeling.
- 1:35:22Speaker 8: A voice that says I'll be here and you'll be alright.
