- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Kevin's Sports very daily here on a radio
- 0:11Speaker 1: focused and bringing you the Folkston and Hi sports show.
- 0:16Speaker 1: On today's show we have the usual suspects on local sports,
- 0:20Speaker 1: but a lot of the show will be taken up
- 0:22Speaker 1: by me chatting to three female friends who were looking
- 0:25Speaker 1: for something to keep them focused, get them fit, and
- 0:28Speaker 1: put back a bit of confidence and mental well being
- 0:31Speaker 1: in their lives. So the indoor rowing team of Atlantic
- 0:37Speaker 1: Angels were born and went on to take part one
- 0:40Speaker 1: year later in the British Championships. So don't go away
- 0:45Speaker 1: and get settled in with a coffee. We've got an
- 0:48Speaker 1: hour's music and sport, starting with the Eurhythmics with the
- 0:52Speaker 1: lovely voice of Annie Lennox. And there must be an
- 0:55Speaker 1: angel playing with my heart.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Some orchestra ange.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And that's a Eurythmics and there must be an angel. Well,
- 1:51Speaker 1: I've got three Angels with me today, the Atlantic Angels.
- 1:55Speaker 1: So I'll tell you what We're gonna ask them, just
- 1:58Speaker 1: to introduce ourselves and tell us a little bit about themselves.
- 2:01Speaker 1: And we start with We've got Charlotte, Emma and Allison.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So hello Charlotte, how are you today? Hello?
- 2:07Speaker 2: I'm very well, Thanks okay, so just.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself and that I
- 2:11Speaker 1: do for now, and then we will find out loads
- 2:14Speaker 1: more about the Atlantic agels as we go. Yeah.
- 2:17Speaker 3: So okay, I'm Charlotte and I'm a mum of four children, Thomas, Bella,
- 2:24Speaker 3: Monty and Barney and my lovely husband Ricky.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 3: We live in Saltwood and we run a business, Rainer Group,
- 2:34Speaker 3: which we've run from the beginning since twenty two years ago.
- 2:40Speaker 3: It's a now thriving business and I'm very much involved
- 2:43Speaker 3: in that business.
- 2:44Speaker 2: So it's yeah, very busy, excellently right, thank you.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So okay, now we're going to switch to you, Emma,
- 2:50Speaker 1: tell us a bit about yourself.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Emma, Hi, Kevin, thank you. Yes, my name is Emma,
- 2:54Speaker 4: Emma Lloyd. I'm a mum of one and a busy
- 2:58Speaker 4: mum of one. I have a full time job which
- 3:01Speaker 4: keeps me out of mischief most of the time. And yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 4: just a very busy little life really. So yeah, good excellent.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Allison's your turn.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Can you come good afternoon, Alison Carney. I'm a senior
- 3:14Speaker 5: lecturer at Canterbury christ Church University, mum to Alastair and Lewis,
- 3:18Speaker 5: and wife to Paul.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Right, excellent, so there we go. So we know all
- 3:22Speaker 1: about you now. So now then this Atlantic Angel. So
- 3:27Speaker 1: how did it all begin? Was it like one afternoon
- 3:31Speaker 1: up the pub or was it something that you've been
- 3:33Speaker 1: planning for ages Charlotte.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Well not really.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I think how it first came about about was in
- 3:40Speaker 3: twenty three and I'm quite a runner and like doing
- 3:44Speaker 3: events and things like that, and then I tore my
- 3:46Speaker 3: hamstring in a rough runner and from there I was like, well,
- 3:52Speaker 3: what am I going to do now? I can't run?
- 3:55Speaker 3: And for me I need I need running, I need
- 3:58Speaker 3: my fitness just to take me away and escape from
- 4:02Speaker 3: everyday life. So it was from there that I then
- 4:05Speaker 3: thought what am I going to do?
- 4:07Speaker 4: You know?
- 4:07Speaker 2: And I needed some sport that was non weight bearing.
- 4:10Speaker 3: So Ricky, my husband, who is he loves his rowing
- 4:15Speaker 3: and he's always tried to get me onto a concept
- 4:18Speaker 3: to rower. He said, well, why don't you do some rowing?
- 4:21Speaker 3: So I thought, right, I take up some rowing, but
- 4:24Speaker 3: I need to do sport with other people. I can't
- 4:28Speaker 3: do things on my own, and especially concept two rowing,
- 4:31Speaker 3: it's quite monotonous, so I had to pull some people
- 4:35Speaker 3: in with me. I had to pull my mates in
- 4:37Speaker 3: with me, you know. So that's why these two girls.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Okay, the switch to to Emma. Now Emma, So what
- 4:47Speaker 1: have you got a sporty background?
- 4:49Speaker 5: Do you know?
- 4:49Speaker 4: Kevin? I quite like to try a lot of different sports.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Jack of all and master of none, but I have
- 4:55Speaker 4: a go everything in tennis is a massive love of
- 4:59Speaker 4: mine to do. But as Charlotte said, I think sometimes
- 5:02Speaker 4: trying something different is really good. And Charlotte ended up
- 5:06Speaker 4: bringing the idea to us about rowing, and again it
- 5:09Speaker 4: was a challenge. I had never tried it before, and
- 5:11Speaker 4: it was just something that meant that I could spend
- 5:14Speaker 4: time with friends but also have a giggle and also
- 5:17Speaker 4: get fit.
- 5:17Speaker 1: So it was good. It was good. Okay, So Allison,
- 5:21Speaker 1: so what have you got a spatty background? Yeah?
- 5:23Speaker 5: So my background's really a netball. I've played a lot
- 5:26Speaker 5: of netball in my youth in my young years, but
- 5:29Speaker 5: it led to quite a lot of knee problems. So
- 5:31Speaker 5: I had a full knee replacement back in twenty twenty two.
- 5:35Speaker 5: So yeah, indoor rowing on the concept two has been
- 5:38Speaker 5: brilliant because it's non weight bearing. I couldn't go back
- 5:41Speaker 5: to netball and I wanted an activity where I could
- 5:44Speaker 5: challenge myself. It was competitive, but I also had the
- 5:47Speaker 5: social side. I couldn't go to the gym every day
- 5:49Speaker 5: all day and just work out on my own. So
- 5:52Speaker 5: living close to Charlotte and Emma, we all live in
- 5:54Speaker 5: the village around the corner from each other. Yeah, if
- 5:57Speaker 5: your friends with Charlotte, you get drawn into lots of
- 5:59Speaker 5: different things, and.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Luckily this one was.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yeah, it was an enjoyable one.
- 6:05Speaker 1: When you wrote these two suckers into rowing, had you
- 6:12Speaker 1: any idea that it might lead on to sort of
- 6:16Speaker 1: bigger and better things or was it just at the
- 6:18Speaker 1: time just to keep you all together and do something
- 6:22Speaker 1: as a joint adventure.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I think at the beginning we did have these major ideas.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Once we started on the concept to row, we started
- 6:34Speaker 3: to get quite good at it quite early, and we
- 6:37Speaker 3: had these mad ideas that maybe we could set a
- 6:41Speaker 3: world record.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Of rowing the channel.
- 6:47Speaker 1: It's been done before.
- 6:48Speaker 5: It's been the oldest ones.
- 6:53Speaker 1: The folks and rowing club They when the weather's bad,
- 6:56Speaker 1: they get indoors and do little challenges with other rowing clubs.
- 6:58Speaker 1: You know, I think they did. I think they did
- 7:01Speaker 1: one across the Atlantic, where like over rowing club will
- 7:03Speaker 1: winning in focus and anyway, we digress. So you pulled
- 7:07Speaker 1: them in and were were you all progressing at the
- 7:11Speaker 1: same rate or did you find that you had a
- 7:14Speaker 1: bit of catching up to do?
- 7:15Speaker 4: Emma Well, I think actually we were all quite solid
- 7:18Speaker 4: and steady with the training that we were doing, so
- 7:20Speaker 4: we set ourselves quite realistic times to end up rowing
- 7:24Speaker 4: at and there were days where some were stronger and
- 7:28Speaker 4: other days where others weren't. But I think the beauty
- 7:30Speaker 4: with the rowing is you're just you're as a team,
- 7:32Speaker 4: but you are against your own time. So actually your
- 7:35Speaker 4: own strength and your own fitness is against yourself, which
- 7:38Speaker 4: works quite well even though you're working in a team
- 7:40Speaker 4: with friends to pull it in.
- 7:42Speaker 1: So Alison, when you started rowing and you kind of
- 7:45Speaker 1: got into it, did two thousand meters did it feel
- 7:49Speaker 1: like a little sprint or like a marathon, a marathon
- 7:52Speaker 1: and ultra marathon?
- 7:53Speaker 5: I think, I think to be fair, when we started
- 7:56Speaker 5: we were just literally doing it to see how we
- 7:59Speaker 5: were getting on and it was a bit of fitness.
- 8:02Speaker 5: We didn't think about the British Championships that early on
- 8:04Speaker 5: at all. It was I think it was probably Ricky
- 8:07Speaker 5: that just sort of put us in for it, and
- 8:10Speaker 5: we thought why not, Because I think when you're when
- 8:12Speaker 5: you're sort of doing some activity, it's nice to have
- 8:14Speaker 5: a challenge.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It's nice to have a focus.
- 8:16Speaker 5: So it's not just let's meet up and row, but
- 8:18Speaker 5: it lets meet up and row for a purpose. So
- 8:20Speaker 5: I think that that championship gave us a real purpose.
- 8:23Speaker 5: So yeah, we developed quite quickly.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Right Charlotte. From the the day that you realized you
- 8:32Speaker 1: were in the British Championships, did your outlook on the
- 8:38Speaker 1: whole concept to change? Do you think, oh, well we've
- 8:41Speaker 1: really got to get a get a heads down and
- 8:44Speaker 1: get greking on this.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeh, absolutely completely change.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I mean at that point when we decided that we
- 8:49Speaker 3: were going to enter into the British Championships, John Wilson,
- 8:53Speaker 3: who is been our amazing trainer since then, he said, right,
- 8:58Speaker 3: you need to look at last year's results for your
- 9:02Speaker 3: age category and you need to pick where you want
- 9:06Speaker 3: to be at, which pace do you want to be at?
- 9:09Speaker 3: And then that is going to be your race pace
- 9:11Speaker 3: and that's what you've got to aim for. So we
- 9:14Speaker 3: had to pick a pace and then that's what we're
- 9:16Speaker 3: aiming at.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And at that time, did it show cue though you think, oh,
- 9:20Speaker 1: because you might have been rowing in your comfort zone
- 9:22Speaker 1: and think, oh wow, we have really got to pick
- 9:24Speaker 1: it up.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I think at first because it seemed quite a
- 9:27Speaker 3: long way off.
- 9:28Speaker 2: So we were like, yeah, we can do this. Yeah,
- 9:31Speaker 2: this is going to be easy.
- 9:33Speaker 3: But actually as it came nearer and nearer the events,
- 9:36Speaker 3: we were like, oh my goodness, this is quite a challenge.
- 9:40Speaker 2: This is quite a challenge.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Okay, all right, we're going to just have a little
- 9:43Speaker 1: breakdown and play some of your music. We've got a
- 9:47Speaker 1: few angel themed songs in the playlist today and this
- 9:52Speaker 1: must be one of the top ones when it comes
- 9:54Speaker 1: to angels. Robbie Williams.
- 10:01Speaker 6: A certain way, there's any angels can'templay?
- 10:09Speaker 3: May do?
- 10:14Speaker 2: They know?
- 10:16Speaker 1: The place is where we go when we're bringing.
- 10:24Speaker 6: The facility, I'm any angels instead they go over Robbie
- 10:33Speaker 6: Williams there, And this is my job today.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I'm loving the angels here in the radio, folks, and
- 10:37Speaker 1: we've got the Atlantic Angels. Okay, so let's turn to you, Emma. Emma,
- 10:43Speaker 1: So for you, when you were told that you're going
- 10:47Speaker 1: to go into the British Championships, did life change? I mean,
- 10:51Speaker 1: apart from Oh, my goodness, we've got to get our
- 10:53Speaker 1: redge down. What about if you, like, you know, did
- 10:56Speaker 1: you start watching your diet and did you do any
- 11:00Speaker 1: of a form of exercise, you know, anything to sort
- 11:02Speaker 1: of help out with the rowing. Absolutely.
- 11:05Speaker 4: I think you kind of realized once it gets a
- 11:08Speaker 4: little bit more serious that there's a challenge that you
- 11:11Speaker 4: strive for. Your outlook changes completely because now you need
- 11:15Speaker 4: to make sure you eat the right foods at the
- 11:17Speaker 4: right time before you train. You start to understand what
- 11:20Speaker 4: your body needs. And actually it's a good practice for
- 11:23Speaker 4: when you actually get to the event because there's a
- 11:25Speaker 4: lot of build up for what the body needs. Water,
- 11:28Speaker 4: everything we take for granted that we have, but we
- 11:30Speaker 4: don't consciously think that we're having enough of. So yeah,
- 11:33Speaker 4: you've become a lot more conscious with it. And I
- 11:36Speaker 4: think just you move a lot more because you are
- 11:38Speaker 4: obviously feeling a lot stronger and you're feeling more of
- 11:42Speaker 4: a focus on your fitness and your health. So I
- 11:44Speaker 4: think that came hand in hand we're doing the rowing challenge. Okay, Alison,
- 11:48Speaker 4: did you find it difficult? I mean, did you have
- 11:50Speaker 4: to kind of if you like to change your lifestyle
- 11:53Speaker 4: bit and to suit the rowing.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I suppose we did in a way because we
- 11:56Speaker 5: started off just rowing three days a week and then
- 12:00Speaker 5: we sort of decided to do the challenge. We built
- 12:02Speaker 5: up to four, five, six days a week. So yes,
- 12:05Speaker 5: whenever I said to Paul, I'm just popping out for
- 12:07Speaker 5: a row, I'll be back in an hour, he knew
- 12:10Speaker 5: that it was never going to be an hour because
- 12:11Speaker 5: it would be a lot longer because Emma talked for
- 12:13Speaker 5: an hour before we rode.
- 12:15Speaker 2: So yeah, that our sort of.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Daily pattern became very focused around the rowing. But you
- 12:20Speaker 5: know it was good to have that sort of mental
- 12:22Speaker 5: focus and physical focus.
- 12:24Speaker 1: So yeah, I enjoyed it.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Ah.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Good. So Charlotte on a sort of practical point, where
- 12:30Speaker 1: do you train?
- 12:32Speaker 2: Ah?
- 12:32Speaker 3: So we actually trained in my loft most of the time.
- 12:39Speaker 3: We had three rowers set up in the loft, and
- 12:43Speaker 3: then the girls did.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Buy their own.
- 12:45Speaker 3: The other two girls, Emma and Alison, they brought their
- 12:47Speaker 3: own rowers for home, so at any time they wanted
- 12:50Speaker 3: to row. But then on occasions during the summer, we
- 12:53Speaker 3: put the rowers out in the garden and we could
- 12:56Speaker 3: row outside, which was much nicerer the rowing in my
- 13:00Speaker 3: after Yeah, I mean the actual, I don't know, let's
- 13:07Speaker 3: just run it.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Run me through like a session if you like, I mean,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you just don't jump on a row machine. Do you
- 13:13Speaker 1: kind of do a slow warm up? Do you do
- 13:15Speaker 1: any exercises before you get on the row machine?
- 13:18Speaker 2: Not really, to be honest.
- 13:20Speaker 4: I mean.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Early in the days, we were just jumping on the
- 13:26Speaker 3: rower and sometimes we would have to go straight into sprints.
- 13:29Speaker 3: But then we were finding after a time that we
- 13:32Speaker 3: couldn't just go and sprint on a rower. We had
- 13:35Speaker 3: to do maybe a five minute warm up to get
- 13:38Speaker 3: ready and get your muscles warmed up ready, and that
- 13:41Speaker 3: seemed to work better. So we were learning constantly on
- 13:46Speaker 3: you know, our bodies, and you know what was the
- 13:49Speaker 3: best way, you know, we could get the best out
- 13:51Speaker 3: of our bodies at that moment.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna take it that you know, the three of you,
- 13:56Speaker 1: you do this is this challenge. But basically you didn't
- 13:59Speaker 1: have any experience of indoor rowing before. And so it's
- 14:06Speaker 1: like if you like running, you know, when you're running,
- 14:10Speaker 1: you realize that you've got a warm up. There might
- 14:12Speaker 1: be certain muscles that want a bit of attention more
- 14:15Speaker 1: than other muscles. So this is amazing that you you
- 14:18Speaker 1: sort of absolutely zero experience. So your journey to the
- 14:22Speaker 1: British Championships, this is a puzzling me. Did you did
- 14:25Speaker 1: you have any any previous competitions before you? You went nothing? Nothing,
- 14:30Speaker 1: So you can enter? Do you have to obviously supply
- 14:32Speaker 1: your times or something? How did you get into it?
- 14:35Speaker 2: No?
- 14:36Speaker 3: You just anybody can anyone can enter. It's amazing really yeah. Yeah,
- 14:42Speaker 3: I mean there are lots of categories. Yeah, so any
- 14:46Speaker 3: you know, there's so many different categories, juniors, seniors, you know,
- 14:52Speaker 3: so you just get into the right category.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And so so your husband Ricky put you in for it.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Did you know he was going to do that?
- 15:02Speaker 2: Well, he was one evening.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Often after a row we would have a little celebratory drink.
- 15:09Speaker 3: We turned into one Gin and tonic and then maybe
- 15:12Speaker 3: two Gin and tonics, and on this specific night, it
- 15:16Speaker 3: was a few more Gin and tonics and rick was like, yeah,
- 15:20Speaker 3: you're going into the British Round Championships. We're going to
- 15:22Speaker 3: sign you up right now. And then literally that was it.
- 15:26Speaker 3: We were signed up. I mean we did. I did
- 15:30Speaker 3: have some understanding from it because John Wilson, he was
- 15:34Speaker 3: a championship indoor rubber and he'd done a lot of
- 15:37Speaker 3: indoor rowing, so he'd sort of told us about what
- 15:40Speaker 3: it did involved, so we did have some understanding.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Okay, Allison, let's start with you now. On the day
- 15:49Speaker 1: we jumping, now from Charlotte's loft to the championship a
- 15:53Speaker 1: bit of a different venue, but did you get a
- 15:57Speaker 1: chance to like out the back of a little warm
- 15:59Speaker 1: up before you went into your event.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Yeah, it was quite overwhelming actually on the day it
- 16:05Speaker 5: was it was a fit Fest festival, so there was
- 16:07Speaker 5: lots of things going on. The British Roiling Championships were
- 16:10Speaker 5: only part of it. So we walked into this cavernous
- 16:13Speaker 5: space and on the right hand side there was all
- 16:16Speaker 5: these rowers laid out numbers, very official, really well organized,
- 16:21Speaker 5: big places for all these audience to watch, and then
- 16:25Speaker 5: round the back.
- 16:25Speaker 1: There was a warm up area.
- 16:27Speaker 5: So yeah, Emma and I were rowing in our age
- 16:29Speaker 5: groups at half nine in the morning, which was a
- 16:32Speaker 5: shock to our systems because we weren't very good at
- 16:34Speaker 5: rowing in the morning.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Charlotte. It's a good point actually, because when I was running,
- 16:40Speaker 1: I used to like running in the morning. I couldn't
- 16:43Speaker 1: I couldn't run.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Yeah, we tended to row in the in the evenings
- 16:46Speaker 5: after work, and then John did suggest that we needed
- 16:49Speaker 5: to practice rowing in the morning. It could well be
- 16:52Speaker 5: that that was our time and around, like Emma said,
- 16:55Speaker 5: around our eating and drinking. So yeah, we had a
- 16:57Speaker 5: bit of a warm up and then we were we
- 16:59Speaker 5: were straight. So it was it was very overwhelming. And
- 17:02Speaker 5: there was GB rowers there, you know, there was some
- 17:05Speaker 5: really strong sort of competitors there.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And I was in.
- 17:08Speaker 5: My age category and weight category and yeah, go ahead,
- 17:11Speaker 5: and we did two k and then yeah, we looked
- 17:15Speaker 5: for the bar.
- 17:18Speaker 1: So, Emma, were you two in the same category, Yes,
- 17:21Speaker 1: we were, so you were if you like rowing against
- 17:23Speaker 1: each other, do you all go off those in the
- 17:25Speaker 1: same category? Was there enough rowing machines to set you
- 17:28Speaker 1: all off?
- 17:29Speaker 2: There were?
- 17:29Speaker 4: There are about sixty rowing machines. Alison and I were
- 17:32Speaker 4: in different age categories but the same time to row
- 17:35Speaker 4: at h and yeah sixty. So, as Alison said, you
- 17:39Speaker 4: walk into this huge room faced with all these rowers
- 17:42Speaker 4: when we're used to three.
- 17:43Speaker 2: In Charlotte's laugh, quite different.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Oh dear, that must be a real culture shock. It's amazing. Yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 1: so Charlotte, your your age category or weight category was different,
- 17:55Speaker 1: but tell us about your race. How did your race go?
- 17:58Speaker 3: So my race was later in the day. I can't
- 18:01Speaker 3: what time was it now half twelve, so the girls
- 18:05Speaker 3: had both rode early and then I had to wait
- 18:07Speaker 3: till half past twelve, and I was becoming so so nervous.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I started to feel.
- 18:13Speaker 3: It was overwhelming and there was more audience. I mean,
- 18:19Speaker 3: there were thousands of people coming in at the lunchtime times.
- 18:23Speaker 3: So I was really starting to feel quite panicked.
- 18:28Speaker 2: So yeah, a that's that point.
- 18:31Speaker 3: I went into my row and when I walked through
- 18:36Speaker 3: the doors, it was just a sea of people just
- 18:41Speaker 3: with flags and cheering, and it was quite overwhelmed.
- 18:47Speaker 1: But now the little Bertie tells me you did all right, though?
- 18:49Speaker 1: How did you get on those people that don't know?
- 18:59Speaker 1: Tell us how you've got so.
- 19:01Speaker 3: For my age category and my weight, I got bronze medal.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Bronze and after being so uptight and nervous, And do
- 19:16Speaker 1: you think that helped in the end light you think
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'll just get his going, you know what, with the nerves.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not sure. I suppose it does, really, because
- 19:25Speaker 3: it is very very intense. You're talking about eight eight,
- 19:31Speaker 3: nine minutes that you have got to row at your
- 19:35Speaker 3: absolute maximum. And I mean there were people that were
- 19:38Speaker 3: being sick that we're passing out. So you didn't want
- 19:42Speaker 3: to get to that point. You know, you wanted to
- 19:44Speaker 3: push yourself, but you want to get to the end.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Okay, right, Well, we're gonna have another little break for
- 19:51Speaker 1: a bit of music and this is our third Angels
- 19:54Speaker 1: song now, and this one is a lovely song by
- 19:56Speaker 1: a Wet Wet Wet and it's called Angel Eyes. H
- 20:11Speaker 1: h h were angel Eyes on our Angel Things morning?
- 20:41Speaker 1: Here radio focus to me, We've got the Atlantic Angels
- 20:44Speaker 1: with us. We've competed at the British Championships and one
- 20:48Speaker 1: certain rower came home with a bronze medal. How awesome
- 20:52Speaker 1: is that? There's so many heroes out there and I've
- 20:54Speaker 1: got three of them here today. Let's start with you,
- 20:57Speaker 1: Alison now, now, Alison coming. So it's taken if you're
- 21:02Speaker 1: like a year out of your life, not literally, but
- 21:07Speaker 1: you know, training. So when you look back, what sort
- 21:11Speaker 1: of benefits and what advice would you give to people
- 21:14Speaker 1: that I just need something extra in their life? What
- 21:18Speaker 1: would you say to them?
- 21:19Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 21:20Speaker 5: I think for me personally, it was about trying to
- 21:23Speaker 5: get some fitness back, some weight control, to be perfectly honest,
- 21:27Speaker 5: but also that sort of social side, and to help
- 21:30Speaker 5: my mental health as well with my injury with my
- 21:32Speaker 5: knee and then COVID. There's lots of things that sort
- 21:35Speaker 5: of built up that I was then struggling to cope
- 21:37Speaker 5: with a little bit.
- 21:38Speaker 1: So being able.
- 21:40Speaker 5: To be physically active but also to help my mind
- 21:43Speaker 5: as well was really important, you know. And I've never
- 21:47Speaker 5: rode before, so it was it was. It was really
- 21:49Speaker 5: a combination of different things that made me feel better
- 21:52Speaker 5: in myself physically, mentally, and the social side as well.
- 21:56Speaker 5: So yeah, anyone can do it. It's just finding the
- 22:01Speaker 5: thing that works for you.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I think that's a good point. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I
- 22:04Speaker 1: mean at the time, you probably didn't think rowing would
- 22:06Speaker 1: work for you. I mean, if you've never been on
- 22:07Speaker 1: a rowing machine and Charlotte comes around and says, come on,
- 22:10Speaker 1: we're going to start rowing, or you probably thought I
- 22:12Speaker 1: would give it a go. How long was it before
- 22:14Speaker 1: you kind of molded into it, so you thought, you
- 22:17Speaker 1: know what, I'm quite enjoying this.
- 22:19Speaker 5: I'm not sure I've never molded into it. I'm probably
- 22:21Speaker 5: still learning. Yeah, it took me quite a while to
- 22:24Speaker 5: get my confidence with the fact that I was going
- 22:26Speaker 5: to do this championship. Yeah, and I hate to say it,
- 22:29Speaker 5: sorry Paul, but I'd love to do it again. I'd
- 22:32Speaker 5: like to try and better myself before. But yeah, it was.
- 22:37Speaker 5: It was something that I didn't think i'd enjoy because
- 22:39Speaker 5: I saw it as a bit of a solo gym pursuit.
- 22:41Speaker 5: But actually when you do it with Emma and Charlotte,
- 22:43Speaker 5: you've got no option but to enjoy it. Yeah, And
- 22:46Speaker 5: I'm competitive, so I like that competition against myself to
- 22:50Speaker 5: improve myself in lots of different ways.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Okay, so Emma, I mean you're probably going to tell
- 22:54Speaker 1: me what Allison's told me, but I mean, what sort
- 22:57Speaker 1: of benefits and what sort of feeling did you you know,
- 23:00Speaker 1: did you get when you got off that rowing machine
- 23:03Speaker 1: in Birmingham and thinking, you know.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Good question, because I think you're exhausted and you're pleased
- 23:08Speaker 4: you've done it, but the sense of achievement you feel.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Really quite epic.
- 23:13Speaker 4: And I think it's a time in your life where
- 23:15Speaker 4: things are changing. Maybe you've got children that are going
- 23:18Speaker 4: after university, they're doing things, a bit of an empty ness,
- 23:21Speaker 4: you've got time for yourself to challenge something and all
- 23:25Speaker 4: of a sudden, you then, with all the training, find
- 23:27Speaker 4: yourself in the Birmingham NEC climbing off a concept two rower.
- 23:32Speaker 4: You're still breathing, which is a miracle, and you feel
- 23:36Speaker 4: so epic with the achievement and you've done that. Anyone
- 23:39Speaker 4: can do it, and you've done that and it felt great,
- 23:42Speaker 4: felt really.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Good, brilliant Charlotte. And when you started this a year ago,
- 23:49Speaker 1: did you just think I'll be you know, and I
- 23:51Speaker 1: always said this before, but just get the girls together,
- 23:53Speaker 1: have a little row, have a little drink. Did you
- 23:55Speaker 1: ever really think that you get to British Championships and
- 23:58Speaker 1: come back with a bronze medal?
- 24:00Speaker 2: Absolutely? No way, absolutely no way.
- 24:03Speaker 3: I mean, for me in my sport, I always like
- 24:09Speaker 3: something to focus to and I always like a challenge
- 24:12Speaker 3: or a goal because I think if you don't have that,
- 24:15Speaker 3: then you won't keep on tip, you won't keep going,
- 24:19Speaker 3: you won't do it three times a week, four times
- 24:20Speaker 3: a week. And I think it's really important if you're
- 24:22Speaker 3: going to take up some sort of sport that.
- 24:24Speaker 2: You have a goal that you reach reach to.
- 24:28Speaker 3: And to have that goal of going to the British
- 24:31Speaker 3: Championships and to actually even get there was amazing for
- 24:36Speaker 3: all three of us, but to come away with the
- 24:40Speaker 3: medal as well, I mean, I mean it blew my
- 24:42Speaker 3: mind really and it does make you feel like you
- 24:45Speaker 3: are on top of the world, and you.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Want that feeling again.
- 24:49Speaker 3: When you've done it, you want it again and again
- 24:51Speaker 3: because it feels great.
- 24:52Speaker 1: You must be very proud of your two colleagues.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Though I am so immensely proud.
- 24:59Speaker 1: It's just just to pull them in and say I
- 25:01Speaker 1: want to just go and do a bit of rowing.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I really take my head to alls you. So we're
- 25:07Speaker 1: going to wind down a little bit now, but we've
- 25:09Speaker 1: still got plenty of time in as much that we
- 25:12Speaker 1: want to find out a little bit about who were
- 25:15Speaker 1: your trainers, who gave you the structure, who gave you
- 25:19Speaker 1: the guidance and the expertise to get to the British Championship.
- 25:24Speaker 3: So it was the Atlantic Avengers. I don't know if
- 25:29Speaker 3: people have heard about them, but they were a pair
- 25:32Speaker 3: that rowed the Atlantic in twenty nineteen. They achieved I
- 25:38Speaker 3: think three world records and British records, and they've obviously
- 25:44Speaker 3: done a lot of indoor rowing to prepare for this
- 25:48Speaker 3: type of event. So, yeah, it's my husband Ricky who
- 25:52Speaker 3: was one of the Atlantic Avengers, Ricky Rayner, and then
- 25:55Speaker 3: John Wilson who was his pair.
- 25:59Speaker 2: So they were the pair.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Well, it was actually Ricky that started off with the
- 26:03Speaker 3: training and was giving as guidance, and then once we'd
- 26:07Speaker 3: entered into the championships, it was John that almost took
- 26:10Speaker 3: over the training because he'd had a lot of experience
- 26:13Speaker 3: with indoor concept training and what you need to do,
- 26:18Speaker 3: so he put a whole plan together for right.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I do know Ricky and John and when they
- 26:24Speaker 1: were doing the Atlantic Challenge, I did support them at
- 26:28Speaker 1: a couple of events. One was down at it was
- 26:31Speaker 1: the High Focused in Temile Race. They brought the boat
- 26:34Speaker 1: down there and we encouraged people to get on it
- 26:39Speaker 1: and for some reason we ended up at Makestone Football
- 26:41Speaker 1: Club asking people to come and support them and have
- 26:47Speaker 1: the picture done and realized just how small the boat was.
- 26:51Speaker 1: To spend a lot of time together, but I mean,
- 26:56Speaker 1: I know it's your husband, but what a great pair
- 26:59Speaker 1: of experience to have in your camp.
- 27:01Speaker 3: You know, Yeah, absolutely, I mean that their mindset is incredible,
- 27:08Speaker 3: you know the way they pushed us and their encouragement
- 27:12Speaker 3: was just incredible.
- 27:14Speaker 1: It really was right. So Emma, come to you now.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I know it's difficult if you like for Charlotte because
- 27:22Speaker 1: it was Ricky was her husband, and you think, do
- 27:24Speaker 1: you push your wife so far you want your dinner tonight? Yeah?
- 27:28Speaker 1: I mean how did you find the training? Did you
- 27:29Speaker 1: find that you were being pushed to the limit?
- 27:32Speaker 4: Do you know I'm one that thrives on if I'm
- 27:34Speaker 4: given a number, I'll go So he used to say
- 27:37Speaker 4: when we used to go in, well, here's your time,
- 27:38Speaker 4: try and get that.
- 27:39Speaker 2: And that's all I aimed at.
- 27:41Speaker 4: And as Charlotte said, both Ricky and John had such
- 27:44Speaker 4: a great way of giving the training that as much
- 27:47Speaker 4: as you didn't want to let yourself down, actually we
- 27:50Speaker 4: were all in it together, yes, and didn't want to
- 27:52Speaker 4: let the guys down when they sort of pitched a number,
- 27:55Speaker 4: and as hard as that number was, you just kind
- 27:57Speaker 4: of blocked everything else and did it so and there
- 28:00Speaker 4: was always a gin and Tonic at the end.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Yea, perhaps you should change the name of the team
- 28:05Speaker 1: to the Gymatonic Angels. So Alison, would you agree with
- 28:10Speaker 1: what was just said about being focused?
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 28:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean yeah, Ricky was the sort of person
- 28:16Speaker 5: that was really pushing us to begin with. But with
- 28:18Speaker 5: John and his sort of schedule that we had, and
- 28:21Speaker 5: we all became a bit statisticians, didn't we. We had
- 28:23Speaker 5: our piece of paper and our pen and we'd write
- 28:25Speaker 5: down all the times that we did and how we
- 28:27Speaker 5: had to improve on ourselves. So yeah, we needed that guidance.
- 28:30Speaker 5: So we wouldn't have got to where we did without
- 28:32Speaker 5: their guidance. So yeah, big thanks to Ricky and John. Okay,
- 28:35Speaker 5: and the bonding of a team work. You know, I mean,
- 28:37Speaker 5: if it's three of you and the team and you
- 28:39Speaker 5: kind of what it's not a single sport, is it.
- 28:42Speaker 5: You want to do it for the other members of
- 28:43Speaker 5: the team. The three of you want to want to
- 28:45Speaker 5: jump in and support each other. Okay, so it's time
- 28:48Speaker 5: for you, thank yous and hellos and how are you them?
- 28:51Speaker 5: So let's start with you, Alison, tell us who you
- 28:55Speaker 5: want to thank and say hello to. Yeah, well, initially
- 28:59Speaker 5: just thanks to John Ricky, as I've already said, and
- 29:01Speaker 5: thanks to Emma and Charlotte for putting up with me,
- 29:04Speaker 5: and really just thanks to Paul my husband, and Alistair
- 29:07Speaker 5: and Lewis my two boys.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Who have sort of backed me all the way.
- 29:10Speaker 2: So yeah, thanks to all of those people.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Excellent and Emma what it was about you.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Well, almost reflecting on just what Alison said there, John
- 29:18Speaker 4: and Ricky absolutely they were amazing through the whole step
- 29:21Speaker 4: and Alison and Charlotte, the girls couldn't have done it
- 29:24Speaker 4: without them. Amazing family and friends that ended up being
- 29:28Speaker 4: very much part of it with me along the way
- 29:31Speaker 4: and without them. You know, it is a solo effort,
- 29:34Speaker 4: but it's absolutely a team effort to get you up
- 29:36Speaker 4: there and do it.
- 29:37Speaker 1: So yeah, okay, so final word from you, Charlotte, your
- 29:41Speaker 1: turn to say thank yous and hellos and anything over
- 29:44Speaker 1: to you.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 29:46Speaker 3: So yeah, obviously John and Ricky were amazing and got
- 29:48Speaker 3: us through this. Also Louise my sister, she actually gave
- 29:54Speaker 3: us one of her rowers and she wasn't is she
- 29:56Speaker 3: going to do this with us, So thank you to
- 29:58Speaker 3: Louis for your rower. Obviously family and then Frisbee who
- 30:04Speaker 3: were Frisbee who is the printers just over the road
- 30:09Speaker 3: from here. They got our jumpers done in like two days,
- 30:14Speaker 3: designed done and we had them on on our way
- 30:17Speaker 3: to Birmingham. So thanks to them because that was brilliant.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so see really good.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Okay, Well, you know we've got forty five minutes gone there.
- 30:28Speaker 1: It should have been a two hour show today. I
- 30:30Speaker 1: should have made it works besture. But I want to
- 30:33Speaker 1: thank you for coming in, all three of you, and
- 30:35Speaker 1: I just want to add that I am so amazed
- 30:40Speaker 1: that you've gone, if you like, from no experience at
- 30:43Speaker 1: rowing to the British Championships, and to be fair to
- 30:46Speaker 1: Charlotte one of the team coming home with a bronze medal.
- 30:51Speaker 1: It's a big tribute. And I'm sure Ricky and John
- 30:53Speaker 1: I were so proud of you as well, the fact
- 30:55Speaker 1: that they got you there within the year and you
- 30:57Speaker 1: didn't disgrace yourselves. But I know what's coming next. Now
- 31:02Speaker 1: you're on your sort of wine downtown. What's your next challenge? Emma, Emma?
- 31:09Speaker 4: Wow?
- 31:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you see.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Now we're going to say it out loud, it kind
- 31:12Speaker 4: of becomes a real thing, certainly to give the two
- 31:15Speaker 4: thousand and me to row a row again, but to
- 31:17Speaker 4: do it a lot better.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, Alison, what do you say?
- 31:20Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 31:20Speaker 1: I think I leto that.
- 31:21Speaker 5: I don't want to say too much because otherwise Charlotte
- 31:23Speaker 5: will get us involved in some other events. I know
- 31:26Speaker 5: Emma wants to do a cycling event, but I'm not
- 31:28Speaker 5: quite sure I'm ready for that yet.
- 31:30Speaker 1: So yeah, okay, a lost word from you in Charlotte.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Do you really think that you you know now now
- 31:36Speaker 1: if you like the excitements come down and do you
- 31:40Speaker 1: want to go for it again next year?
- 31:41Speaker 7: Oh?
- 31:42Speaker 2: I think definitely.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I mean for me personally, I want to try and
- 31:45Speaker 3: get under the eight minutes if I can do it.
- 31:48Speaker 2: But I've said it now.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Good for you, Well, it's been fantastic, even you in
- 31:52Speaker 1: it really has. I've really enjoyed today and I'm just
- 31:57Speaker 1: I'm so proud of you as well. In fact, you've
- 31:59Speaker 1: come in, You've ooken about it, you shared your story.
- 32:02Speaker 1: There's going to be a lot of people listening to
- 32:03Speaker 1: this either today or on the podcast, and I think
- 32:07Speaker 1: you're just amazing flying the flag for the Atlantic Angels.
- 32:10Speaker 1: And what I'm going to do is play this song,
- 32:12Speaker 1: which is I think Prial sums you up. Thank you
- 32:16Speaker 1: once again for coming in, and this is Knowles Barkley
- 32:19Speaker 1: and this is called Crazy but that's narls Barkley there
- 32:42Speaker 1: and that song just sums up the Atlantic angels they're crazy.
- 32:46Speaker 1: But there I mean anybody, ladies or gentlemen out there
- 32:50Speaker 1: that have heard this interview. And if you are feeling
- 32:54Speaker 1: a bit, if you like your mental health is a
- 32:56Speaker 1: bit low and you're feeling a bit, you just need
- 32:59Speaker 1: something in your life. Find a challenge. It doesn't have
- 33:02Speaker 1: to be rowing. It could be swimming, could be walking,
- 33:04Speaker 1: could be anything. Just get out there, test yourself, give
- 33:07Speaker 1: yourself an event that you can focus on and you
- 33:11Speaker 1: can aim for. There's lots of walks across London for
- 33:14Speaker 1: charity and I'm sure you could turn your mental health
- 33:17Speaker 1: around and just start enjoying yourself again. Anyway, we've got
- 33:21Speaker 1: to crack on. Let's squeeze this one in Folks in
- 33:24Speaker 1: Rugby club first fifteen. Now they had no game last Saturday.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Next up this SAD is a home game against Vigo,
- 33:30Speaker 1: who traveled down for a mepham in North Kent. The
- 33:34Speaker 1: second fifteen well it must have met. I was pleasantly
- 33:36Speaker 1: surprised by this result. They beat local rivals Dover by
- 33:40Speaker 1: fifty two points to seventeen and this week it's a
- 33:42Speaker 1: way to Cranbrook. Moving on to the Folks and Ladies
- 33:46Speaker 1: team where they had a resounding forty seven mel win
- 33:49Speaker 1: against the poor old Maidstone, who have been going through
- 33:52Speaker 1: a bit of a tough time lately trying to get
- 33:54Speaker 1: a side together. This victory puts Folkston into second place
- 33:58Speaker 1: behind the leaders seven Oaks, and their next fixture is
- 34:01Speaker 1: a way to Sheppey on Sunday, the twenty third of
- 34:03Speaker 1: feb Now the Six Nations, well, it was another action
- 34:07Speaker 1: packed Six Nations. At the weekend I watched Italy beat
- 34:10Speaker 1: Wales twenty two fifteen on the TV, showing us how
- 34:13Speaker 1: far Italy have come in recent years, and it was
- 34:16Speaker 1: a low point for Wales as they dropped down to
- 34:18Speaker 1: twelfth in the world rankings, the worst position they've ever
- 34:22Speaker 1: been in. Then I watched England versus France and what
- 34:25Speaker 1: a game that was. Elliott's Sports far at Daily scoring
- 34:28Speaker 1: the winning try in the final minutes of a Pulse
- 34:31Speaker 1: eighteen game to give England a twenty six twenty five victory. Now,
- 34:36Speaker 1: I must admit I had every intention of watching the
- 34:39Speaker 1: Scotland versus Island game, of which Ireland won thirty two eighteen,
- 34:43Speaker 1: but I ended up watching Plymouth Fargyle bet in Liverpool
- 34:46Speaker 1: one Neill in the fourth round of the FA Cup
- 34:48Speaker 1: and their reward of that victory was an away fixture
- 34:51Speaker 1: to Premier Division side and Manchester City. And I bet
- 34:55Speaker 1: City manager Guardiola will Will he won't enter us underestimate
- 35:00Speaker 1: the Plymouth side and we'll field some of his style players.
- 35:03Speaker 1: The fifth round of the games will be played around
- 35:05Speaker 1: the weekend of Saturday, the first of March. Okay, so
- 35:09Speaker 1: now we're going to move on. Time for another squeeze
- 35:10Speaker 1: ando a song in this is lamar is there any justice?
- 35:14Speaker 7: One oh five point nine? The sound of Folks then
- 35:18Speaker 7: radio Folkstone is any justice?
- 35:37Speaker 1: Okay? With him? Through a little bit more sport, We're
- 35:39Speaker 1: going to turn our attention to hockey. I want to
- 35:42Speaker 1: congratulate the men's first team at the Optimists there they'd
- 35:45Speaker 1: beat Eastbourne four to three. This was a really six
- 35:48Speaker 1: pointer if you like, because Folks on the top and
- 35:51Speaker 1: Eastbourne worse second. But they are now focusing on our
- 35:55Speaker 1: five points clear and I want to thank the two
- 35:57Speaker 1: goal scorers, Tom Bean and Joe both former guests of
- 36:01Speaker 1: the show, and Josh Clifford. Right, So I want to
- 36:05Speaker 1: mention also Vicky Baxter, the Vicky Baxter place for the
- 36:08Speaker 1: ladies third team. They beat Gore Court one, Neil and
- 36:12Speaker 1: Vicki another form of the guests of the show. She
- 36:14Speaker 1: got a goal as well, So well done to all
- 36:16Speaker 1: the form of the guests of the show who keep
