- 0:36The Spartans of Michigan State versus the Wolverines of Michigan.
- 0:41Hello everybody, this is Tom Hemingway.
- 0:44And today again we have the spectacle of spectacle.
- 0:47The annual Michigan State-Michigan football game before over 101,000 fans here at Bright Sunfield Michigan Stadium this afternoon.
- 0:59Well, they say football is a game of emotion.
- 1:02And never is it more emotional than in a Michigan State-Michigan football game.
- 1:08Michigan trying to defeat the Michigan State Spartans in Ann Arbor for the first time since 1955.
- 1:15The Michigan State by winning today could tie the longest winning streak in this series of four straights.
- 1:22For the 21st straight time, the game is a sellout.
- 1:27And since 1948, more than 1,900,000 people have watched this game in either Michigan Stadium or Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.
- 1:42As far as every turn of the field, they've had the flip of the coin between the captains.
- 1:46John Johnson of Michigan and Al Brenner of Michigan State Michigan won the toss, elected to the C.
- 1:51While Michigan State has been with the win here in this first quarter and will defend the Southern end zone.
- 1:58And will have the win with about seven miles an hour to their back.
- 2:02A game built as a battle between the Spartan quarterback Bill Caracchus, who specializes in both the running and the passing game.
- 2:10The surprise of the Spartans this year in the rushing attack.
- 2:14Only a sophomore, but already has picked up 268 yards and 57 carries.
- 2:20Michigan State also known for their fine defense through the years, and this year is no exception as they are keyed by Rich Saul,
- 2:29one of identical twin brothers on the Michigan State team.
- 2:33And you'll be hearing a lot from him this afternoon.
- 2:36And of course, the captain of the Spartans, Al Brenner, who is one of the last of the two-way players in collegiate football today,
- 2:44playing both split-end on offense and safety on defense.
- 2:48Let's run down the starting lineups now for Michigan State, and we'll put them on defense since that's the way they'll open the game.
- 2:54At the end for the Spartans will be sophomore Wilt Martin, 6'3", 220 pounder.
- 3:00He is from Selfridge Air Force Base where his father is stationed.
- 3:04At the other end is Ken Little, who was injured in the Wisconsin game but is expected to see action in this contest and perhaps start.
- 3:11He's 6'2", 220, a junior from Youngstown, Ohio.
- 3:14If he does not start, it'll probably be sophomore Gary Nowak at the other end, 6'5", 230 pounder from St. Clair Shores.
- 3:20The tackles for Michigan State on defense, Rick Benedict, a junior, 6'2", 225 from East Lansing, and Charles Bailey, a senior, 6'2", 30 from Dayton, Ohio,
- 3:30and all him, one of the top defensive linemen in the Big Ten. The middle guard is Jack Zindell, a junior, 5'11", 190 from East Lansing,
- 3:39moved ahead of Bill Dawson, who broke a foot in early scrimmage session, but Zindell also has been hampered by injuries in his career, but Zindell will be starting him.
- 3:48The linebackers we already mentioned, Richard Sahl, 6'2", 218 pounder, a junior from Butler, Pennsylvania.
- 3:54He leads the team and tackles with 35 this year and also has three interceptions to his credit.
- 4:00The other linebacker will be Don Law, a junior, 5'11", 227 pounder from Brownsville, Pennsylvania.
- 4:06In the secondary for the Spartans, the cornerbacks will be Frank Waters, 5'10", a senior, 185 from Hillsdale,
- 4:13who was shifted from a flankerback to the defensive secondary by Coach Duffy Doherty, and senior Ken Hepp, 5'8", 170 from Birmingham, Michigan.
- 4:22As we already mentioned, the safety man is Al Brenner, 6'1", 194 pound senior from Niles.
- 4:28He had a 95-yard punt return last year against Illinois for a Big Ten record, and the overback is Jay Breslin, a sophomore, 6'3", 185 from East Lansing.
- 4:38Now the Michigan Wolverines on offense will have a tight end Jim Mendy, 6'3", 215 junior from Solon, Ohio.
- 4:45At the split end will be Jerry Henslin, junior, 6'2", 210 from North Hill. He'll alternate with Bill Holt at the split end.
- 4:52The tackle down offense will be Dan Beardorf and Tom Hintzger, the guards, Dick Saldaraza and Stan Broadmauk.
- 4:58In the center will be Dave Jensen. The quarterback is Dennis Brown.
- 5:01The running backs, Ron Johnson and Garvey Craw.
- 5:05And at flanker, John Gaferer, after being injured in the Duke game, setting out last week's game against Navy, should be back in action this afternoon.
- 5:14Kicking off for Michigan State will be Gary Boyce, a sophomore from St. John's, Michigan.
- 5:20Set in the deep spot is George Huey at the 5-yard line. He has Johnson and Lance Shuffler up ahead of him at the 10.
- 5:30A gorgeous afternoon for football.
- 5:34Jampack Michigan Stadium awaits the opening kickoff and here comes Boyce, here comes the football, we're on the way. Right down the field, Huey at the 12.
- 5:44Comes to the 15, to the 20, right to the 25, to the 30, to the 45, to the 40, to the 45, to the 50, and he's knocked down at Michigan State,
- 5:51territory at the 48-yard line by the kicker, Gary Boyce.
- 5:59From Michigan, George Huey as he did last week against Navy, electrifying the crowd with a long run back of 39 yards and the opening kickoff in Michigan has a first and 20-goal for Spartan, 49-yard line.
- 6:11They flank Gabriel wide to the left.
- 6:14They set the eye behind Brown of Grau and Johnson and split off of it now.
- 6:18As Brown turns and gives off to Garvey Craw and he finds a hole over the middle and he's down to about 5 yards with a Spartan, 44-yard line.
- 6:27Right underneath the foul, the right-shirted number 61, Charles Bailey, 230-pound senior from Dayton, Ohio and Don Law.
- 6:38They say his knee touched down at the 45-yard line, a gain of 4, second down and 6 yards to go.
- 6:45Again, Gabler is flanked to the left.
- 6:47Implin is tight on the right side.
- 6:49They split the setbacks once again as the handoff is given to Ron Johnson and he doesn't find too much room over the left side of his own offensive line
- 6:55as he has maybe a couple of the 43-yard line where he was hit by Don Law once again.
- 7:03Right side linebacker.
- 7:05Here's a change on the Spartan's defensive unit now.
- 7:08Number 66 Mike Hogan checks in there and number 65 goes out.
- 7:17Jack Zindel, that's the middle guard position.
- 7:20Back-hopping has replaced Dick Calderazzo at left guard for the Wolverines, carrying a play in.
- 7:25It's third and four.
- 7:26They're going to run a play motion to the right side and down keeps him.
- 7:29He's over the 40-yard line to the 39, very close to the first down.
- 7:33He may be just in this spot.
- 7:36Making the tackle.
- 7:38Was Don Law for the third straight time and let's see if they're going to bring the James in.
- 7:42They are.
- 7:43He had to go to the 39-yard line.
- 7:46The ball is rusting, apparently, just shy of the 39, whether there's any part of it over, of course,
- 7:52is the determining factor and it is just about three inches side.
- 7:57They're looking at the side linebacker.
- 8:00And the Michigan State Spartans are making a couple more defensive changes.
- 8:04They're coming in with a couple of big defensemen up on that line as Michigan is going to go for it.
- 8:10Fourth down and inches to go for the first down.
- 8:13And here we are, just about a minute and a half into the ball game.
- 8:16They've already got a big crucial play staring at the plate.
- 8:19John Cole and Mike Young with a big defenseman on the line checking in for Michigan State.
- 8:24Brown looks down the line of streaming as the referee marks the ball for play.
- 8:29Brown has him lined up in the eye.
- 8:32They break off of it, however, as the handoff is given to Johnson.
- 8:35He's got the first down as he's down inside the 39-yard line before he was hit.
- 8:40By Al Brenner, who came up from his safety man position to make the tackle on Ron Johnson.
- 8:47The ball is just in inside the 39.
- 8:49First and ten to go for Michigan State.
- 8:51We've got the dog on the field.
- 8:53A little early in this ball game.
- 8:55It's a different dog, however, than the one that gained about 280 yards against Nadey last week.
- 9:01First and ten to go.
- 9:03Gabler's blank to the left.
- 9:05Brown hands off to Johnson.
- 9:06He finds a slight hole with one side.
- 9:08He's going to open it at the front of the 20-yard line.
- 9:10He may go.
- 9:11Ten, two, ten, five, six, down.
- 9:13Thank you, guys.
- 9:15The ball is turned off by his teammates at the end zone as he found a hole over the left side.
- 9:24Bob Pinkster, Darby Craw, Dick Saldarazzo made some key blocks up there in front of Johnson.
- 9:31Frank Waters was the only man with a chance to get Johnson, and Johnson simply swarmed away from him at the 15-yard line and went in for the touchdown.
- 9:40Touchdown, four-and-five, Johnson.
- 9:43Johnson's fifth touchdown of the season.
- 9:46And now, Jim Gillian will try to make it seven-and-a-nothing.
- 9:50The kick is up.
- 9:51It's in.
- 9:52And with 15-0-4 remaining in the first quarter, Michigan leads seven-to-nothing.
- 10:05That was a block of 49 yards in five plays.
- 10:10With Ron Johnson staring it in from 38-and-a-half yards out for the touchdown.
- 10:17Brown staying on the ground the entire series.
- 10:21And need I tell you that the Michigan Wolverines are fired up right now.
- 10:33Frank Titus with kickoff for Michigan.
- 10:39Don Heisman is deep along with Tommy Logg.
- 10:44It's a short kick caught by a lineman and falls on it up at the 32-yard line, number 64, Mike Young.
- 10:52It was a line-drive kick right down the middle of the field.
- 10:56Young caught right in his midsection and fell to the ground immediately, not risking a fumble.
- 11:01So the Spartans have it first and tend to go from their own 32-yard line.
- 11:05Eddie McCloud is the center.
- 11:06The guards are Ron Solon, Don Fair.
- 11:07He tackles Dave Van Elst, Ted Wysinski.
- 11:10He ends Frank Forman and Al Brenner.
- 11:12Bill Ferocco is the quarterback.
- 11:13He touches wide to Tommy Logg and the fly goes down.
- 11:15Logg steps back in at his own 35-yard line and is knocked down to 37.
- 11:20Thank you to the
- 11:26Spartans and Charlie Wiedemeier as the flyers.
- 11:32Michigan's defense runs down this way.
- 11:33The ends are Phil Seymour and Cecil Pryor.
- 11:35The tackles Dan Clarkson, Tom Goss.
- 11:37The middle guard is Henry Hill.
- 11:39The linebackers Tom Stincek and Ed Moore.
- 11:41The cornerbacks Brian Healy and George Healy.
- 11:43And the safety men are Tom Curtis and Bob Wich.
- 11:46The walkoff is against Michigan State.
- 11:48It's a five-yard penalty for illegal motion on the part of the Spartans.
- 11:56And that moves the ball back to the 22-yard line.
- 12:00Make it to the 27-yard line.
- 12:02First down and 15 to go.
- 12:04The Spartans line up in the eye.
- 12:06They have a slot back to the right as Brenner is flipped to the right.
- 12:08They're going to run it out of the eye.
- 12:09Toronto back to pass.
- 12:11He hits Wiedemeyer at the 31-yard line and he's knocked out of bounds immediately.
- 12:15By number 91 Phil Seymour.
- 12:18An offensive left end and Brian Healy the left cornerback.
- 12:22Knocked out of bounds at the 31-yard line.
- 12:27It will be second down and 11 yards to go.
- 12:31The Spartans in all white this afternoon with the green helmets and the green numerals.
- 12:34This time Wiedemeyer flanks wide to the left.
- 12:40Brenner is flipped to the right about five yards in motion to the right.
- 12:43Goes Wilinski to pitch out, comes to love and love is right about the right of city.
- 12:47A fine defensive play by once again Phil Seymour.
- 12:53He was assisted by Tom Goss.
- 12:55So Phil Seymour, 6'4 junior from Oakley, Michigan, has come up with a couple of key defensive plays in a row for the Wolverines.
- 13:03The Spartans now face for the third and 10th situation as they move the ball on that play only a yard to the 32-yard line.
- 13:12Tammy Love checks out of there.
- 13:17As the Spartans on third and 10, the drop over left to Toronto.
- 13:24Heads off to Wilinski and Wilinski finds a big hole over the left side and he's up to about the 45-yard line of Michigan State.
- 13:31He tackles Jerry Hartman for Michigan and that will be enough for the first down.
- 13:40Gordon Baudel goes out of there and Love comes back in.
- 13:43Baudel checked in there for love and they had actually three ends in the game for Michigan State on that play.
- 13:48Baudel was setting the slot to the left.
- 13:50First and 10 to go from the Spartans, 45-yard line.
- 13:55Wiedemeyer this time is setting the slot to the right.
- 13:58In motion to the right goes Wilinski and the pitch out to Love and he's going to try to power through to the right side.
- 14:02He comes back into Michigan territory for the 45-yard line.
- 14:05He's nailed by Tom Goss.
- 14:10Curtis got a hand on him back at about the 50 and Goss rode him to the turf at the Michigan 46-yard line where it's second down and a yard to go.
- 14:23So far both teams sticking pretty much to the ground although there has been one pass thrown up by Piraco.
- 14:30There's movement on the line.
- 14:31Everybody gets back on site however before the snap.
- 14:33Piraco hands off to Wilinski.
- 14:34He fumbles, falls on himself as there's a pileup down at the Michigan 41-yard line.
- 14:42Wilinski was hit by Goss and Henry Hill fumbled the ball.
- 14:48But luckily enough it stayed right under him as he fell on it at the 41-yard line.
- 14:52That's enough for the first down.
- 14:54First and 10 to go for the Spartans.
- 14:55Michigan leads 7-0 early in this first quarter.
- 14:58Over 100 and 1,000 fans here at Michigan Stadium this afternoon.
- 15:02Wiedemeyer setting the slot to the left.
- 15:04In motion to the left goes Wilinski this time to pick up and love and he's going to try to power through to the left side.
- 15:09And he's hit just about the line and still is by a host of Michigan faculty.
- 15:16First and ailing was Ed Moore.
- 15:22George Huey came up along with Cecil Pryor.
- 15:24All of them knocking love down just as he got it over the 40-yard line.
- 15:29So there was a pick up of actually one yard on the play.
- 15:32Second down, 9 to go.
- 15:34Eddie McCloud comes over the ball at center for the Spartans.
- 15:37Slot to the right this time as Wiedemeyer is in it.
- 15:40Brenner way up to the right.
- 15:41Bronco's going to go back to pass.
- 15:42Pires it, makes it.
- 15:43No, he's going to run it with a bound.
- 15:44He's down for about three to the 37-yard line.
- 15:48Henry Hale dragging into the turf as Bronco pumped once, didn't let it go, found his man covered, and held onto it himself to the 37-yard line.
- 15:57Here goes Brenner out of there and Gordon Bowdell checks in for him.
- 16:00At the split end he's 6-2 a junior, 2-0-4 from Allen Park.
- 16:04It's third down and seven to go at the Michigan 37-yard line.
- 16:07Another big third down play for Michigan State.
- 16:09They paid off on it the last time on a third and ten.
- 16:13Bowdell comes wide to the left.
- 16:14Wiedemeyer setting the slot to the left.
- 16:16High formation behind Claraco.
- 16:19A handball by the reverse play to the flag of I-25.
- 16:22He's in the open, the 30, the 25, the 20, the 15, the 10, the 5.
- 16:25He's knocked out of bounds.
- 16:27Let's see if he made it into the end zone.
- 16:37Now he was knocked out, evidently, after he dead-poured into the end zone, just over the flag.
- 16:44So it is a touchdown for Michigan State.
- 16:49Wiedemeyer was hit right at about the one-yard line by George Huey and just stayed on his feet long enough to get inside that red corner pylon marking the goal line down there at the corner.
- 17:02So it's seven to six.
- 17:03Gary Boyce will try to tie it up.
- 17:05He's a left-footed kicker from St. John's.
- 17:07Wiedemeyer is holding.
- 17:09There's the kick.
- 17:11It's over.
- 17:12No goal.
- 17:13Off to the left.
- 17:15So the Spartans fail on the extra point attempt and the score holds.
- 17:20Michigan 7, Michigan State 6, and Dave McKay looks like they've got a scoring afternoon so far in progress.
- 17:28That we do, Tom. I had a brief conversation last night with Tony Mason at the press party that they have each week here at Michigan.
- 17:36And he told me that if Michigan could maintain some points, which they have not done in the last two or three Michigan State meetings, that they'd be in the ballgame all the way.
- 17:43And certainly they're exemplary in the ballgame.
- 17:46And State coming right back.
- 17:48We're in for a real winner here today.
- 17:50That drive of the Spartans covered 68 yards and eight plays.
- 17:54With Wiedemeyer going 37 yards with a touchdown.
- 17:57Mason went 38 and a half for the Michigan touchdown.
- 18:00Here's Boyce on the kickoff now.
- 18:04It's a sailor.
- 18:05Goes back into the end zone and really lets it go.
- 18:08And it rolls out for an automatic cutback and they'll take it out to the 20.
- 18:11First and 10 for the Wolverines.
- 18:15This has been a fabulous series.
- 18:17Certainly it has gained national status as one of the top collegiate games year after year across the country.
- 18:26This is the 61st meeting of these two clubs, Michigan.
- 18:32O's in all-time series lead of 46 to 19.
- 18:35There's been five ties.
- 18:38First and 10 to go.
- 18:39As down the line of spinach and the option for a roll-down, he cuts back here at the 20 and he's up through the 24-yard line for a gain of four.
- 18:47Only on to end this was Frank Waters.
- 18:50Left cornerback.
- 18:53Son of the Hillsdale, Coach Muddy Waters.
- 18:57Played a lot of flanker back for the Sparks but shifted to defense this year by Doherty.
- 19:03Second down, six yards to go for the Wolverines.
- 19:06Gaber is flanked wide to the left.
- 19:07Jerry Imselin is split right in.
- 19:12Down turns, gives off on the counterplay to Ron Johnson and Johnson gets back to the 25-yard line and that's about it.
- 19:18He gets piled up there by the entire right side of the Michigan State defensive line.
- 19:24Check it as they get off the bottom of the pile.
- 19:27Wilt Martin, big defensive end from Selfridge Air Force Base, the last off the pile.
- 19:35Here's Mike Hogan checking into the Michigan State lineup.
- 19:39Going out of there is Jack Zindel.
- 19:46Martin and Nowak now are the defensive ends, third and four to go for the Wolverines.
- 19:51Brown fakes the pass, gives off on the draw play to Charlie Carr and Carr is filled to the first down as he's stacked up at the 26 by Charles Haley.
- 19:59Defensive right tackle for Michigan State, whom they consider perhaps their top defensive lineman.
- 20:06He's got Omega 4 down and four yards to go and Michigan is forced into a punting situation.
- 20:15They send Charlie Riedemeyer back as the lone deep man.
- 20:22As Mark Warner gets his pun away, it's a high one, not too far up.
- 20:27Fair catch called for and then the Spartans let it bounce and it rolls down to the Michigan State 35-yard line where it dies.
- 20:36And Michigan State will put it in play at that point at the Spartan 35, a pun of 39 yards for Mark Warner, no run back by Michigan State.
- 20:44We've got seven and a half minutes to go in the first quarter, Michigan leading 7-6.
- 20:48Ron Johnson scoring on a 38-and-a-half yard run early in the ball game.
- 20:52Charlie Riedemeyer coming right back for the Spartans with a 37-yard touchdown scamper.
- 20:58The difference being a missed extra point right now by Gary Boyce.
- 21:02Al Brenner splits wide to the right. Riedemeyer setting a slot to the right.
- 21:05The eye formation behind Bill Farakos, senior, 5'11 from Irwin, Pennsylvania.
- 21:09The handoff is given to the second man through, tailback Tommy Log.
- 21:12And Tommy Log is up to about the 40-yard line and runs right into Bill Seymour, along with Tom Goss, defensive left end and tackle respectively.
- 21:26Spartans come into this game with a perfect 3-0 mark. Michigan with a 2-1 record.
- 21:30The Spartans have already seen action in the Big Ten this year.
- 21:33They walked all over Wisconsin last week 39-0. Michigan misses their first Big Ten game of the season.
- 21:39A lot back to the right is Riedemeyer. In motion to the right goes Berlinski.
- 21:42The handoff right up to the middle goes Tommy Log on the fullback.
- 21:47Dive right over his own center, Eddie McCloud. And he has perhaps one or two to the 41-yard line.
- 21:54Cecil Pryor and Dan Parks make the tackle.
- 21:58So it's 3rd down and 4 yards to go. So far the Spartans have excelled on 3rd down plays.
- 22:04They were 3rd and 10 deep in their own territory on the first series of plays.
- 22:10They made it on another 3rd down. They went all the way for the touchdown.
- 22:13On the option play for office, wide drop to the right. He's going to shoot himself.
- 22:16He's going to find the hole over the right side and he's up to the 49-yard line.
- 22:19It's another first down for Michigan State.
- 22:21The tackle made by Tom Goss, senior, 225 pounder for Knoxville, Tennessee.
- 22:27And the Spartans have their fourth touchdown of the afternoon and their 75th yard on the ground.
- 22:34Farakko has gone to the air only once. He has completed that one toss.
- 22:37Brown has yet to throw his first pass.
- 22:41First and 10 to go, the I-formation. This time Wiedemeyer flanked wide to the left.
- 22:44Brenner split right. Farakko turns and gives off to Tommy Log.
- 22:47Slides around the left side and he is bowled over at the 46-yard line of Michigan by Tom Stinsey.
- 22:53Senior linebacker from Stephen, Ohio and the right cornerback, George Huey, the other senior.
- 22:59Flint Central.
- 23:02Big 10 leader in punt returns last year and he got Michigan off to a great start in this game
- 23:07as he ran the opening kickoff back 39 yards to put it in Michigan State territory where the Wolverines went in.
- 23:13Wiedemeyer flanked to the right. Brenner split left.
- 23:16Second down, 5 to go. Back to fast for Farakko. He's going to be hit for a lot.
- 23:21Coming through there to Spillett was Ed Moore, the stop for linebacker on the right side from Youngstown, Ohio.
- 23:32Farakko faked the draw play to his fullback, Borlinsky.
- 23:35Kept the ball but nobody touched Mr. Moore and it's a loss back to the Spartan 48-yard line
- 23:42where it is third down and a long 10. So here's another big third down play.
- 23:47Five minutes to go in the quarter. Michigan leading 7 to 6.
- 23:50Wiedemeyer coming right in. He's going to be hit. Henry Hill, top four middle guard.
- 23:52They're running a slot out of the left this time as Wiedemeyer is set in it.
- 24:05Wasn't buying at that time and he ran an injured Spartan player. It appears to be the center, Eddie McClell.
- 24:11That's the same play they ran for the touchdown but this time Henry Hill said no, I'm not buying it.
- 24:17So we have a timeout on the field on the Spartan Michigan State with a score Michigan 7, Michigan State 6.
- 24:32Also caught a quick glance down on the field time. It looks as if Henry Hill got banged up on that play on that tackle.
- 24:37He may have twisted his knee a little bit. He's out there nursing it right now a little bit.
- 24:42I think the Michigan trainer is going to come out and have a look right now.
- 24:45Two great, great defensive plays there from Michigan. Nobody touched Ed Moore.
- 24:49He just breezed right by his blocker and dumped the quarterback.
- 24:53And that time Henry Hill just poured it on and that nice reverse play.
- 24:57Michigan State really pulled it off the first time with a score.
- 25:00But as you said he would not have it that time. Kept his eye right on his own area out there on the left side and pulled the man down.
- 25:06Dave I think it's interesting to note also that both Henry Hill and Ed Moore, the men that you just talked about, are both sophomores.
- 25:13And both are likely to be around here for a couple years. Hopefully making those same types of tackles.
- 25:21Eddie McLeod has been assisted from the field and coming in to take his place is Tom Beard, a sophomore, 6'6", 250 pounder from Battle Creek, Michigan.
- 25:40The Spartans will be forced to punt for the first time this afternoon.
- 25:45Michael Berlinski dropping back to the front. He hails from Quentasic, Michigan.
- 25:53High pass from center, he pulls it down and gets rid of the ball.
- 25:57It's a wobbly kick hitting at the Michigan 25 yard line and it goes out of bounds.
- 26:02That's the 25 of Michigan.
- 26:06Gordon Bordell with first down on the play for the Spartans to watch it go out.
- 26:11Michigan will put it in play first and 10 from its own 25, a 30 yard punt that time for Dick Berlinski.
- 26:18Four and a half minutes to go in this first quarter, Michigan holding a 7 to 6 lead.
- 26:22Both teams scoring the first time they had their hands on the football this afternoon.
- 26:27Over the ball at center comes Dave Denson for Michigan.
- 26:30He's a senior from Zaneo, Ohio.
- 26:33He's put this up back so wide pitch out to Johnson around the right side of goal. 25 holding on to his jersey right up around the net.
- 26:42All-Grain Wisconsin.
- 26:44Was big number 82, Gary Nowak.
- 26:47By Nowak.
- 26:48Johnson got by Nowak but Nowak who is 6'5 and 230 and has a reach of about the length of Bill Russell,
- 26:56reached out and just nailed Johnson right at the neck by his jersey and pulled him down at the 29 yard line.
- 27:05Make it second down and 8 yards to go.
- 27:08Johnson's jersey is torn and his shoulder pad is flapping on the right side.
- 27:11Back to pass for the first time.
- 27:13Goes far and far.
- 27:14It's a quick pass.
- 27:1540, 45, 40, 45.
- 27:17He's got down a lot.
- 27:20The 32 yard line of Michigan State by Frank Watery.
- 27:26And wound on a beautiful fake up the middle of his fullback, Jarvie Craw.
- 27:30Faded back.
- 27:32And hip tight end Jim Mandich at the 50 yard line and Mandich moved it down inside to Spartan 33 first and 10 to go for Michigan.
- 27:41First pass of the afternoon for Dennis Brown.
- 27:45Gable.
- 27:46Blank to the left.
- 27:48Craw and Johnson and there's movement on the line and contact made as the flags go down.
- 27:53So let's see who made the first move.
- 28:01The officials for today's ballgame are referee Eugene Calhoun, the umpire is Frank Stochio,
- 28:09the headlinesman John Olsen, the field judge Robert Dangenhart, and the back judge is Donald Wedge.
- 28:15The penalty is against the University of Michigan for illegal procedure and moves it five yards back to the 38 yard line.
- 28:25That'll make it first down to 15 to go as Dennis Brown barks up the signals, looks down the line of scrimmage.
- 28:31Going back to pass.
- 28:32Fires it right over the middle.
- 28:33It's overthrown and tended for Jim Mandich down at the 25 yard line.
- 28:36Mandich was hit by Jay Breslin.
- 28:39They're over back for the Spartans.
- 28:43Breslin, Jack Zindale are both sons of former Michigan State players.
- 29:01Second down and 15 yards to go.
- 29:03Brown is now one out of two in the passing department.
- 29:07Brown in the option, rolling to the left.
- 29:08He's going to keep the ball this time.
- 29:09Cuts back in, a hurdle one man at the 35 yard line and he's pulled down at about the 32.
- 29:13Brown the ball, we're here.
- 29:15He was tackled by Bailey.
- 29:16Hitting him over there was Charles Bailey.
- 29:22Here comes Jerry Inzlin back in and split in for Michigan and Bill Harris goes out of there.
- 29:27Brown moved that ball right back to the original line of scrimmage just over the 33 yard line.
- 29:31So it's third down and 10 yards to go.
- 29:33Time continuing to run out here in this first quarter, three and a half to go.
- 29:38Michigan holding on to a narrow one point lead, seven to six here.
- 29:42Gable this time is flanked wide to the right.
- 29:45Inzlin split off five yards to the left as Brown is rolling back to pass.
- 29:48Fires it, intended for Gable in the end zone.
- 29:51Cut down, but a flying is down, wait a minute, a flying is down.
- 30:08Let's see who it's against.
- 30:10Pushing off Michigan State, the touchdown will count.
- 30:15Three yard pass play from Dennis Brown to John Gabler and that ball was thrown perfectly
- 30:22as Brown just lofted it up in the air and let Gabler run under it in the end zone.
- 30:28Frank Waters was back with Jay Breslin to defend on the play and I believe Waters was the boy
- 30:33guilty of the pass interference on the part of Michigan State.
- 30:37But it didn't make any difference as Gabler gobbled it up and Michigan now leads 13 to six
- 30:42and Tim Killiam will be trying to make it 14.
- 30:45Here's the kick, it's partially blocked and doesn't get over the crossbar.
- 30:50It was partially blocked at the line of spinach and sailed underneath the crossbar so the score
- 30:55holds, Michigan 13, Michigan State six.
- 30:59That series of plays covered 74 yards and five plays, Brown to Gabler for 33 yards and
- 31:25a touchdown with 3.20 to go in the first quarter.
- 31:29We noticed that John Gabler was injured on that touchdown reception in the end zone.
- 31:33He's over here talking to the team position right below us.
- 31:36Well he was suffering from a neck injury as you know in the Duke game.
- 31:39Let's hope that he's going to return to that.
- 31:41Here's the kickoff, comes down to Highsmith, comes right back up the field to the 25 to
- 31:45the 30 yard line and he's hit up a 31 yard line and knocked down.
- 31:50Titus who kicked off is down the stop along with George Hewitt and Bill Federico.
- 31:59Eric Federico, I'm sorry.
- 32:02They say his knee touchdown at the 29 yard line of Michigan State.
- 32:05So Spartans will put it in play from that point, first and 10 to go.
- 32:09Michigan leading 13 to six.
- 32:12Dennis Brown with two beautiful passes on that last drive after he had stayed on the
- 32:16ground most of the first quarter.
- 32:18There's a wide pitch out to Wiedemeyer.
- 32:20He's going to throw a pass long and then Dennis McGrann over it and it's simply
- 32:24broken up down there by Jerry Hartman and Tom Curtis at the Michigan 34 yard line.
- 32:31That was the flanker pass.
- 32:34As you know, Charlie Wiedemeyer is a former quarterback.
- 32:37He was a two year understudy for Michigan State but moved this year to a flanker back.
- 32:44And Wiedemeyer took the wide pitch out from Bill Ferracco, went way back to his 20 yard
- 32:49line and fired the pass.
- 32:51It was a long pass and perfectly thrown but great defensive work by Jerry Hartman and
- 32:55Tom Curtis broke it up.
- 32:57Second down, 10 yards to go.
- 32:59Ferracco is going to go back to pass this time.
- 33:01Fires it in and it is incomplete as Ryan Healy almost had himself an interception.
- 33:07As that ball hit him on the shoulder at the Spartan 35 went high into the air.
- 33:11The intended receiver, Frank Foreman, couldn't get it either as it bounced away from him
- 33:16out of bounds.
- 33:17So it is third down and 10 yards to go.
- 33:19That stops the clock with 3.03 remaining in this first quarter.
- 33:22Gordon Baudel checks into the lineup.
- 33:24Tommy Love goes out of there.
- 33:26So again, we're going to have a situation of three ends in Spartan lineup and Baudel
- 33:32no doubt will line up as the slot back to the left and he does.
- 33:38Along with Charlie Wiedemeyer as Ferracco is back to pass on 13th.
- 33:41Runs out of the pocket.
- 33:42He's going to run with it for a 30 and gets away from one man and goes out of bounds
- 33:46with a 35 yard line.
- 33:48Gil Seymour had a shot at him back there.
- 33:51Couldn't get him.
- 33:52Tom Stincy finally ran it out of bounds up back to 35 yard line but it will be short
- 33:56of the first down.
- 33:58So Michigan State will be forced to punt.
- 34:00Ferracco couldn't find anybody open as they sent four men down that time but Michigan's
- 34:06defensive secondary really put a blanket on the receivers.
- 34:10Back to punt is Dick Wolinski once again comes up to the 25 to get it away.
- 34:21A high spiral.
- 34:23Fair catch called for by George Hooey.
- 34:25He grabs it at the Michigan 29 yard line.
- 34:28Don Fair, the defense to the offensive left guard, is down there looking right in the
- 34:32eyes.
- 34:33So Michigan will put it in play first and 10 from its own 29.
- 34:36Let's quickly pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 34:39This is the University of Michigan Broadcasting Service.
- 34:45Tom Hemingway, Dave McKay and Ed Burrows back at Michigan Stadium.
- 34:47First and 10 for the Wolverines.
- 34:49They lead 13 to 6 on a draw.
- 34:50It's given off to Ron Johnson over the left side of his own line up to a 33 yard line
- 34:54where he runs into Charles Bailey.
- 35:00Here comes Jack Harpring back into the Michigan line up.
- 35:03That left guard, Dick Calderazo, will come out of there.
- 35:06Al Brenner comes into the Michigan State line up and Jack Zindale goes out of there.
- 35:13Brenner gets a little breather as he plays both split end and safety for Michigan State.
- 35:21Second down, 6 yards to go on the option.
- 35:23Brown touches back to Jackson.
- 35:25He's open at the 40, the 45, the 50, cuts back at the first 45 and he's knocked down
- 35:30at the 40.
- 35:32A beautiful block by Darby Craw on the left corner back.
- 35:35Frank Waters cleared the way for Johnson before Bailey and Brenner finally could knock him
- 35:40down at the Spartan 40 yard line.
- 35:42Ron Johnson pouring it on again on that one.
- 35:46Johnson, who so far this season, has picked up 374 yards coming into this game and that's
- 35:53good enough for 11th of the nation.
- 35:55And once again, the big man out in front of him, Darby Craw.
- 35:59Go down the big block, first to go for Michigan at the Spartan 40.
- 36:04Brown sliding off to the left this time, gets a good block from Johnson.
- 36:07He takes the pass, goes with it himself to the 39, the 36 yard line where he is upended.
- 36:19I can't help, he seems to be shaken up on that play.
- 36:23Heft is going out of there and Harold Phillips is coming in for him.
- 36:29It's at the 36 yard line of State, second down and six yards to go.
- 36:34Heft missed his sophomore season because of an knee injury.
- 36:41So Harold Phillips, a sophomore from Detroit, has checked in at that right corner back position,
- 36:45second and sixth for Michigan.
- 36:47Motion's right, pitch back to Johnson, he's going to throw the pass, fires it, it is intercepted.
- 36:52At the 35, the 40, the 45, the 50, 45, 40, 45, off that amount is Jay Breslin.
- 37:00Don't make that Frank Waters.
- 37:02Frank Waters intercepted that half back pass thrown by Ron Johnson and Ron Johnson finally
- 37:07got back there himself to knock him out of bounds.
- 37:10A big interception by Frank Waters at the Michigan 30 and he ran it all the way back.
- 37:16The Michigan State 30 and he ran it all the way back to the Michigan 30.
- 37:20So the Spartans get light with just a minute and a half to go in this first quarter and
- 37:24they have it first and 10.
- 37:26At the Michigan 30 yard line, Brenner is flipped to the right.
- 37:30Morocco moves him up to the line of scrimmage, works out of the eye, gives off to Connie Love.
- 37:35The second man to find the big hole over the middle is down inside the 20 yard line to the 17.
- 37:40Ed Moore is the softball linebacker for Michigan.
- 37:43On the right side, made the stop and Michigan State now seemingly coming to life here on
- 37:49that big interception by Frank Waters have driven deep into Michigan territory.
- 38:01First and 10, that's the Michigan 17 yard line.
- 38:04Morocco again from the eye and again he gives it to Love and this time Love is stacked up
- 38:08by the left side of the Michigan defense led by N. Phil Seymour.
- 38:13Love that time gained perhaps only a yard as they market at the 16 yard line some first quarter scores.
- 38:22Western Michigan leads Kent State 7 to nothing.
- 38:28The ball resting just inside the 16 yard line make it second down and nine to go.
- 38:32Harvard leads Columbia 7 to nothing after the first quarter.
- 38:38This time they keep Wiedemeyer in tight as on the option,
- 38:42Franco is going to keep it himself and he is hooked by Tom Curtis at the line of scrimmage.
- 38:49Phil Seymour also broke through there to have him in but there was no gain on the play.
- 38:55So make it third down and still nine to go.
- 39:01Less than 30 seconds to go.
- 39:01it goes back to pass and he's hooked on it.
- 39:06Clemson leads Auburn 3 to nothing after the first quarter.
- 39:17Back to the 24 yard line.
- 39:20Selling through there for Michigan was Henry Hill, the sophomore middle guard and Tom Goss, the senior tackle.
- 39:28A big play for the Wolverines as they knock Morocco back to the 24 yard line.
- 39:34So that will make it fourth in 18. Let's see if we're going to get a field goal attempt coming up here now.
- 39:39Gary Boyce has two out of three so far in field goal.
- 39:45And Charlie Wiedemeyer is kneeling back at the 30 yard line.
- 39:48The time has expired in this first quarter.
- 39:51So we'll have to wait for the second quarter to begin before we get the field goal attempt.
- 40:01All set to go now here in the second quarter as Michigan leading Michigan State 13 to 6.
- 40:07Gary Boyce ostensibly will be trying a 41 yard field goal.
- 40:15But Michigan not going to be caught napping. They can recall not too long ago that the Spartans
- 40:22tried a field goal, apparently tried a field goal and flew off of that field goal formation into the end zone for the first touchdown of the day.
- 40:33And teams have ways of remembering that along with coaches.
- 40:40Charlie Wiedemeyer is kneeling at the 31 yard line.
- 40:43Gary Boyce, a left footed kicker from St. John's, would be attempting a 41 yarder.
- 40:50The ball is placed down. It is up in the air. It is no good. Off to the right.
- 41:03So the Wolverines defense has risen to the occasion to stop the Spartans after an interception and run back by Frank Waters that has given them great position.
- 41:16On that half back option, I watched Michigan work out a couple of times this week and they've been throwing that play with Johnson throwing downfield to the split end.
- 41:24And that time, Waters just laid back and waited for it. He knew it was coming.
- 41:29Thurston 10 to go for Michigan. Brown gives off to Johnson. Over the right side he goes. He's tripped up at the line of scrimmage, falls forward for perhaps three.
- 41:36Al Brenner, the safety man, came in to get a hand on him. Back at the 20. He finally fell forward where Jay Breslin got to him.
- 41:46They mark it at the 23 yard line so they get second down and seven yards to go.
- 41:50One of the things about Johnson, you can hit him once, twice, perhaps three times, but he's very, very hard to knock down.
- 42:03Second out, seven yards to go. They send Krohn motion to the right. Play action. Off to Johnson and the pitch out.
- 42:08He gives wide to the right side and rustles out of bounds at the 28 yard line.
- 42:14By again, safety man Al Brenner and Rich Saul Weinebacher. We mentioned Saul leads the team and tackles at 35.
- 42:23He and Ron Saul are identical twins. Rich is 218 and Ron is 235.
- 42:30Both these lads were teammates of Terry Henretti back in high school in Butler, Pennsylvania.
- 42:36Third down and three yards to go. Jerry Imselin is split to the right.
- 42:46A hand off to Johnson and Johnson fights his way up close to the first down at the 30 yard line.
- 42:53Jerry Nowak got a hand on him and it is enough for the first down as he fell over the 30.
- 43:01Also getting to his feet slowly after the tackle was Al Brenner.
- 43:06Here's a first period score and here's the big one of the Big Ten today.
- 43:10Ohio State nothing per do nothing after one quarter of action.
- 43:17First down and ten yards to go now.
- 43:20As Brown again gives off to Johnson, right up over the middle he goes and falls forward to the 35 yard line.
- 43:27Stringing out behind him there was rubberback Jay Breslin and Wilt Martin,
- 43:31defensive left hand who made the first contact with Johnson.
- 43:35Here comes Jim Betts into the lineup for Michigan and John Gabler goes out at flanker,
- 43:40very happy to report that Gaber was not seriously injured on that touchdown and he has been back in there.
- 43:47Second down and six yards to go as Betts comes wide to the left.
- 43:51Betts is a sophomore from Cleveland. Saw a lot of action last week.
- 43:54A good take by Brown, he's back to pass, he's got to straddle around, he's going to be hit for a loss.
- 43:59Way back to the 24 yard line, Wilt Martin and Bill Dawson.
- 44:10A pair of sophomores that time shot through that line to knock Brown back to the 24 yard line where it's third and 17.
- 44:23Bill Dawson has been bothered by injuries, he broke a foot in an early scrimmage but is back in there now.
- 44:35In motion to the right, those Johnson as Brown keeps it and slides up over the 25 to the 27, 28 yard line.
- 44:41He runs right into the arms of Mike Hogan.
- 44:45Another sophomore from Dayton, Ohio, both teams lined up well sprinkled with sophomores on defense today.
- 44:51That'll make it fourth down and 13 to go and Michigan will be forced to give up the football.
- 44:56Michigan leading 13 to 6.
- 44:59Just over 12 minutes to go in this first half as Charlie Wiedemeyer goes back as the single safety.
- 45:04Standing in his own 25, Mark Warner will kick it from the Michigan 20.
- 45:08Gets it away, another high one.
- 45:10Wobbly however and is angling for the sidelines and goes out at the Michigan State 41-42 yard line.
- 45:20Not too long of a kick that time by Warner.
- 45:23We might mention Ron Johnson who had his jersey torn on a tackle.
- 45:28Now has got it taped up a little bit around the shoulders and he looks, it's almost like he has a two-tone jersey out there.
- 45:37White on top and blue in the middle.
- 45:40First and 10 to go for Michigan State.
- 45:42They're running it from their own 42 yard line.
- 45:45In motion to the right goes Berlinski.
- 45:47Back to pass goes Morocco.
- 45:48Fires it on the left side, it's cut by Wiedemeyer.
- 45:50It's a 15 to go, 45 falls down and is hit immediately by George Huey.
- 45:55Wiedemeyer tried to cut to the outside after gathering in that pass.
- 46:00Wiedemeyer not a big boy, 5'7", 175 from Kaluoa, Hawaii.
- 46:06He's a senior and he's the brother of Herman Wiedemeyer who you may remember a few years ago as a Major League pitcher.
- 46:15First and 10 to go for the Spartans inside the Michigan 45 yard line.
- 46:21Morocco gives off to Tommy Love and Love hurtles his way over his own right side where he is backed up by Tom Stincy at the Michigan 43 yard line.
- 46:36Morocco has gone to the air four times this afternoon, has hit on two.
- 46:40The Spartans have picked up 89 yards on the ground in this first half of play.
- 46:47Michigan on the other hand has picked up 105, both teams riding it out here.
- 46:55This time they move it in motion to the left or on the reverse and give it up to Wiedemeyer.
- 46:59Wiedemeyer cuts back in at the 40s inside the 35 yard line where he runs into Phil Seymour.
- 47:04That's that same play that's going to Wiedemeyer free with the only Michigan State touchdown of the afternoon.
- 47:10It's going to be very close to the first down and they're going to have to measure.
- 47:15As they do, let's check out a couple of other scores here.
- 47:18Boston College leads Villanova 14 to nothing after one period of play.
- 47:29The FBI over Wake Forest 7 to nothing after one period.
- 47:34It is enough for the first down says the referee.
- 47:40Mr. Eugene Calhoun inside the Michigan 35.
- 47:43So first he's going to go for the Spartans, their seventh first down of this afternoon.
- 47:50Morocco turns, gives off to his fullback, Brilinski, and he spins his way down to the 30 yard line of Michigan.
- 47:57The Barks got a hand on him along with Cecil Pryor and Tom Goss.
- 48:01Out there leading the interference that time was tight end Frank Foreman.
- 48:06An awful lot of inside reverses used by Michigan State, Tom.
- 48:09They're trying to set up the trap block in the backfield on some of Michigan's young eager linemen, their Dan Parks, Ed Moore, Henry Hill.
- 48:15They're trying to cut them down on that maneuver.
- 48:19Second out and six yards to go over the ball at center goes Tom Beard for Michigan State, replacing the injured Eddie McCloud.
- 48:25The pitch out goes to Tommy Love.
- 48:27He juggled it but holds on to it and moves down to the 25 yard line.
- 48:32And George Urie, the right cornerback, comes up to make the stop.
- 48:35Love didn't have good control of that football.
- 48:37He had it bouncing up and down in his hands, but luckily enough he got control before he was hit by Huey or it could have been disastrous.
- 48:48Al Brenner comes into the ball game replacing Gordon Baudel at the split end.
- 48:52Brenner getting a little breather there.
- 48:54The ball resting at the 26 yard line.
- 48:57Third down and two yards to go for the Spartans.
- 49:00Everybody inside as the handoff is given to Love.
- 49:03He piles his way up over the line and he is going to be very close to the first down as he dives over the 25 yard line into a mass of humanity.
- 49:15Michigan Tom Goss in on the bottom of the pile.
- 49:20And let's see as they place it down.
- 49:22It looks from here as though he may be just inches short.
- 49:31And that's it, just inches short.
- 49:34Fourth down.
- 49:37A half a length of the football to go for the first down at the Michigan 25 yard line.
- 49:45As the Michigan fans now say, hold him, hold him, hold him.
- 49:51And the Michigan State fans counter with go, go, go.
- 49:57Now Eddie McCloud is back into the ball game at center for Michigan State and Morocco puts his head down on the quarterback dive and slides off the right side and I believe he has the first down.
- 50:07He has.
- 50:10Morocco simply slid off the right side of the center of McCloud and moved it to the needed half yard for the first down.
- 50:18But first and 10 to go at the Michigan 24 yard line.
- 50:22First period score, Princeton 21, Dartmouth 7.
- 50:32Under nine minutes to go in this first half down, Michigan leading 13 to 6 but the Spartans are moving as the handoff is given to Tommy Love and Love is close to the 21 yard line on the dive off the right side.
- 50:46Sam Gorse, first to hit him with the shoulder to knock him off stride and Phil Seymour fell on him at the 21 yard line.
- 50:54Second down and seven yards to go.
- 50:56You can't see a seat vacant here at Michigan Stadium this afternoon.
- 51:03And what a gorgeous day it has turned out.
- 51:0670 degrees, very little wind.
- 51:09Second down, seven yards to go.
- 51:11Everybody tight in the backfield.
- 51:12The wide pitch out goes to Love, starts around the right side, is skipped up at the 20 and falls forward to the 17 yard line.
- 51:19John Gorse, again, first to get an arm out even.
- 51:22Tom Curtis came up to hit Love at the 17 where they mark it.
- 51:28Third down.
- 51:30And he's got about three yards to go for the first down and here comes sophomore Henry Hill back into the line up for Michigan.
- 51:39Jerry Miklos comes out of there at middle guard.
- 51:42Third down, big three.
- 51:47Morocco splits his sub bags, gives off to Dick Walensky and he has stopped at the 15 yard line.
- 51:53He will be shy of the first down as he tried it off his own right side.
- 51:59Ran into Phil Seymour and again Tom Gorse who is seeing a lot of action in that tackle department today for Michigan.
- 52:07Tom, whenever you see a close yardage situation and a big pile of Michigan defenders, you can bet that Tom Gorse is on the bottom.
- 52:15He is absolutely outstanding football player for the University of Michigan.
- 52:19Michigan State now is called for a timeout so we have a timeout on the field.
- 52:23We'll destroy Michigan 13, Michigan State 6.
- 52:26Happy on the bird's-eye view, 9-7, Princeton 21.
- 52:37Now I'm rather surprised that Michigan State hasn't put the ball in the air just a little bit more here in the second period.
- 52:44Things have been a little stingy on the ground and they've been up against it on third down plays a couple of times but they seem to want to maintain sure possession of the ball.
- 52:52Of course they have great respect for Michigan's defensive backfield which none better as a ball-hawking outfit in the Big Ten and they proved that last year.
- 53:01But it's got to give one of these times now in a Wiedemann situation.
- 53:05He'll probably throw again right down now a 15 yard line.
- 53:08Probably the first play or if they can make this first down it might be a quick one to go in the end zone.
- 53:15They're known to do that type of thing.
- 53:17I can't help but believe that this may be just setting up that all-important big play when they do have to have it.
- 53:22Perhaps drop back and hit that pass.
- 53:35The ball resting squarely at the Michigan 15 yard line, fourth down a yard to go for the Spartans.
- 53:42Morocco turns and gives off the love and love, has a hole over the right side.
- 53:47He has hit it for 14 yard line and boy this is going to be close.
- 53:51Jerry Hartman and Tom Stincy came up there to suffer him at the 14 yard line and boy this is going to be close.
- 53:58They've got to bring the change in from across the field.
- 54:02Hartman simply put his shoulder down to try to stop him right in his tracks after Stincy had wrapped an arm around him.
- 54:11He's going to be either shy or over by just about a half a length of the football and that's exactly it.
- 54:18He is picked up a first down by just about a half a football.
- 54:27Tom, Gordon Bodell just checked into the lineup for Michigan State after checking with Doherty over there in the sideline so you could watch out for this one.
- 54:35He's in his foot end replacing Al Brenner.
- 54:37He doesn't tend to go. Bill Farakko leads him up to the line of scrimmage.
- 54:45Splits his setbacks, waits for the snap, a fumble!
- 54:49And it looks as though Michigan State is on it.
- 54:53I believe Farakko recovered his own fumble along with the right offensive guard Ron Saul.
- 55:00Saul came up with a football actually.
- 55:04And he actually spotted right up the line of scrimmage.
- 55:10So it is second down and ten yards to go.
- 55:12Still at the Michigan 14 yard line in possession of Michigan State.
- 55:16They trail the Wolverines 13 to 6 with six and a half minutes to go in the second quarter.
- 55:27Farakko again splits his setbacks.
- 55:28The pitch out to Tommy Loach, running wide around the left side, cuts back at the corner, he's facing off but he's not going anywhere.
- 55:36Cecil Pryor, the first Jamaalian man. He wasn't going to be shelfed aside and you know who, Tom Doherty, right up there to assist him.
- 55:50Now we have another timeout indicated by Michigan State.
- 55:56Let's check it to see however if it's going to be the full duration since the trainers have not come onto the field.
- 56:05I don't believe it is. It's not going to be a full minute timeout.
- 56:09Dave?
- 56:11Tom Cecil Pryor that time on the right side just would not be denied.
- 56:15They usually spring out of play until somebody catches up from the inside defenses, usually Goss as you mentioned.
- 56:20But that time Pryor didn't wait. He went right after the ball carrier and chased him down.
- 56:24It was almost like a rabbit being chased down. He just stayed right after him for about five or six seconds and eventually got the tackle.
- 56:38Tom Stinsick, the acting captain on defense for Michigan, has checked over the sidelines and now goes back into the huddle, defense level for Michigan.
- 56:47As we're just about set to go again, Michigan State with the football, third down now and 16 yards to go.
- 56:54With the ball resting just inside the 20 of Michigan, 6.06 showing on the clock.
- 57:02Time remaining in this first half. Here come the Spartans.
- 57:09Way out to the right this time they send two men, Gordon Baudel and Al Brunner.
- 57:14They have Wiedemar set up a slot to the right. The pitch out goes to Berlinski and he hits right at the 20 yard line.
- 57:24Bill Seymour making the stop as they sent everybody but Duffy Doherty out to the right side that time.
- 57:32And apparently on a pass play but they tried to cross him up and pitch it back to Berlinski.
- 57:38And Seymour just wasn't buying it Dave.
- 57:41Now that time Seymour wasn't even blocked, he simply ran by them. He jumped across the line of scrimmage so quickly that they couldn't set up for him at all.
- 57:49Gary Boyce now will be attempting a field goal from the 27 yard line, which would be a 37 yarder.
- 57:56He just missed a 41 yard.
- 57:58No good. Get off the line. And again the Michigan defense are nailed at lifting this ball.
- 58:20Once again the Michigan defense equal to the task as they held the Spartans and for the second time Gary Boyce misfired on a field goal attempt.
- 58:30So it's first and 10 to go for Michigan. Jim Betts in at flanker wide to the right. The handoff is given to Johnson.
- 58:35He's going to be hit right at the line of scrimmage and maybe a yard loss.
- 58:43Bill Dawson, big middle guard from Tucson, Arizona, 235.63 made the stop on Johnson.
- 58:51Dawson, like the other middle guard, Jack Zendale, an excellent wrestler.
- 58:58Jack Harper in at left guard now for Michigan. Dick Calderazzo comes out of there.
- 59:03Jim Betts flanks wide to the left.
- 59:07In motion to the right goes Craw on the option play. Brown keeps himself and he is hit right at the line of scrimmage for no game.
- 59:14A scrimmage of the 19 yard line and that's where Brown got back to and that was all as Gary Nowak came around to spelling Nowak, one of the many sophomores on this Michigan State team.
- 59:26He was all state both in football and basketball at St. Clair Shores.
- 59:31So it's third down and 11 to go as Jerry Implin splits wide to the right and Jim Betts comes out wide to the left as the flanker.
- 59:38Brown has gone to the air only four times. He's hit on two.
- 59:42He's rolling out this time. He wants to throw. He does. A long one and pennant for Betts.
- 59:47It is incomplete at the Michigan State 30.
- 59:52Betts was covered by Ken Heff and Frank Waters and Betts, although he does possess great speed.
- 1:00:00Just couldn't quite catch up to that football. Brown let him just about a step too far.
- 1:00:07Brown a little bit dissatisfied with himself as he comes over to the sideline, but he threw that football a long, long ways.
- 1:00:15And it would have had to have been a perfect play all the way around for him to connect.
- 1:00:20The Spartans had great coverage on Betts. So it's fourth and 11 and Mark Warner will be punting from his own 10 yard line as Wiedemeyer drops back.
- 1:00:28Here's the punter, a better one this time. It's a high sailor. Wiedemeyer catches it at his own 32, back to the 35.
- 1:00:35And is hit on a beautiful tackle by Jim Bandit and a flag goes down at the 36 yard line.
- 1:00:43The flag is down. Let's check it.
- 1:00:47Apparently a clipping penalty coming up here against Michigan State, which seems to be the case.
- 1:01:00As Wiedemeyer fielded that ball, he tried to swing wide to the right, but Jim Bandit was just standing there like the colossus of roads.
- 1:01:08And Wiedemeyer ran right into it. And Bandit is no fellow that you're going to run over. That 2-15, 47 yard punt that time by Mark Warner and the 15 yard clipping penalty now moves it back to the Spartan 24 yard line, where they have it first and 10.
- 1:01:24With just under four minutes to go in this first half.
- 1:01:28And now let's see if the Spartans do open up a little bit and go to the air. They've only thrown four passes, completed two.
- 1:01:35Colaco takes the snap, wide pitch out to Don Heismith. He's in at the running back. Wide around the left side he goes.
- 1:01:42Comes up over the 30 yard line to about the 32. Heismith in for Tommy Lowe now.
- 1:01:47Heismith has great speed and also a great blocker.
- 1:01:52Tom Stincy got over to make the stop along with Henry Hill at the 32 yard line.
- 1:01:57That'll make it second down and about two yards to go. Heismith incidentally has Gail Serres as his idol, he says.
- 1:02:04It's not a bad fellow to pattern yourself after.
- 1:02:08Heismith from New Brunswick, New Jersey.
- 1:02:11He's lined up now behind Reggie Cavender who's in there at the fullback and again the ball is given to Heismith and he fights his way up to about the 34 yard line, close to the first down.
- 1:02:21Right into the middle of that Michigan defensive line, Cecil Pryor, Phil Seymour.
- 1:02:26All coming in to make the stop on it and it is enough for the first down for the Spartans.
- 1:02:31At their own 34 yard line, that's the tenth first down of the day for Michigan State.
- 1:02:37They have gained 124 yards unofficially on the ground so far this afternoon, Michigan.
- 1:02:42At the same time, 104 on the ground.
- 1:02:47Less than three minutes to go now in the first half as the wide pitch out again to Heismith cuts back in at the 35 and is hit right there.
- 1:02:56First into getting Tom Goss around the ankles.
- 1:03:00Stensig came in to fall on him at the 35 yard line.
- 1:03:04So make it a game of one, second down and nine yards to go.
- 1:03:07Gordon Baudel comes into the Spartan lineup.
- 1:03:10Let's see who goes out of there.
- 1:03:12Al Brenner.
- 1:03:14Tom Seymour and Cecil Pryor are forcing just about every wide play by Michigan State inside where Goss and the other tackle and the other side can handle it.
- 1:03:22They're doing a great job.
- 1:03:24Two-twenty showing on the clock.
- 1:03:26Second down and nine yards to go.
- 1:03:28On the option play, Falaco scrambling around, fires it right over the middle to pick up Wiedemeyer at the 42 of Michigan State for the 45 to the 47-48 yard line.
- 1:03:36Hit by Tom Curtis.
- 1:03:40And that's another first down for the Spartans.
- 1:03:43Falaco set the play action to the left that time.
- 1:03:47And then after everybody had vacated, Falaco simply dropped back and hit Wiedemeyer right over the middle of the line.
- 1:03:56And Michigan State has it, first and 10th, the ball resting squarely between the 47 and 48 yard line in possession of Michigan State in the Spartan territory.
- 1:04:07Less than two minutes to go.
- 1:04:08This time wide pitch out to Highsmith.
- 1:04:10Around the left side he goes and he is hit on a beautiful tackle back at the 46 yard line by sophomore Ed Moore.
- 1:04:16Baudel goes out of there now and Brenner comes back in at split end.
- 1:04:21Brenner the captain from the Spartans.
- 1:04:24And he will become the second leading pass receiver in Michigan State history this year with five more receptions.
- 1:04:30He hasn't caught any so far.
- 1:04:33A minute and 20 to go.
- 1:04:34Second out and 12 yards to go.
- 1:04:36Back to pass goes Falaco.
- 1:04:37Getting the time, scrambling around, fires it.
- 1:04:40It's in.
- 1:04:41Recepted by Healy at the 45 of Michigan.
- 1:04:44Trying to swing right and he's knocked down at the 48.
- 1:04:47Ryan Healy to stand up to the Ohio Junior.
- 1:04:50He came up with the first interception for him this afternoon.
- 1:04:56As Don Baird made the stop on him.
- 1:05:00So Michigan has it with just over a minute to go at their own 48 first and dead.
- 1:05:11Let's see if Dennis Brown now puts the ball in the air.
- 1:05:14He's thrown only five times in this first half.
- 1:05:18Jim Betts with the flanker to the left.
- 1:05:19High formation behind Brown.
- 1:05:21Brown rolling off to the left.
- 1:05:23He's going to throw it.
- 1:05:24He fires it and it's intercepted.
- 1:05:26At the 45 and knocked down at the 50 is Kent Hepp.
- 1:05:30So the team's trade interception.
- 1:05:34Brown overthrew Betts.
- 1:05:36At the 45 the ball went right into the hands of Kent Hepp.
- 1:05:40So Michigan State takes over.
- 1:05:42And now let's pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:05:45This is the University of Michigan Broadcasting Service.
- 1:05:51WUOM, the University of Michigan station in Ann Arbor.
- 1:06:03Back here at Michigan Stadium, Tom Hemingway, Dave McKay and Ed Burrows.
- 1:06:09Where with just 57 seconds left in this first half, Michigan leading Michigan State 13 to 6.
- 1:06:16The Wolverines, Brian Healy, came up with an interception to give the Wolverines a first and 10 to go from their own 48.
- 1:06:23And then on the very next play, Kent Hepp, a senior from Birmingham,
- 1:06:30picked off a Dennis Brown aerial and gave the Spartans the ball right back.
- 1:06:35So Michigan State now has it just over their own 49 yard line, first and 10.
- 1:06:41Here's another score.
- 1:06:43First period, California nothing, Army nothing.
- 1:06:48Don't forget at halftime the battle of the bands, Michigan State and Michigan.
- 1:06:53Always one of the most colorful musical presentations of the year.
- 1:06:59Here's a new first period score, Army nothing, California nothing.
- 1:07:12In there at a defensive end now for Michigan is Jim Willehyde.
- 1:07:16They're replacing Cecil Pryor who seems to have a bit of either equipment trouble or perhaps shoulder problem.
- 1:07:33We have a note here about John Gaber who will pass along to you in just a minute.
- 1:07:37Here's Foraco on the first and 10, back to pass, rolling off to the left.
- 1:07:40He's going to have to run with the ball, comes back to the 50 to the 45 at Michigan.
- 1:07:44A wide knockdown at the 41 yard line by Phil Seymour and Tom Goss.
- 1:07:50As Foraco was trapped and got back to the line of scrimmage,
- 1:07:54then broke free for an additional nine yards, make a second and one.
- 1:07:58Michigan State lining up without the huddle.
- 1:08:02With just 30 seconds to go and Foraco fires it out of bounds to stop the clock.
- 1:08:07Over shot Frank Foreman.
- 1:08:10John Gaber will be out for the rest of the game because of bruised ribs.
- 1:08:14That's the report from the Michigan dressing room.
- 1:08:17So John Gaber has suffered his second injury of the year,
- 1:08:20knocked out of the Duke game because of a neck injury and now he is disabled because of bruised ribs.
- 1:08:26So evidently we're going to be seeing sophomore Jim Betts for the remainder of this contest at the flanker back
- 1:08:32because Paul Strobo, the sophomore from Flint, suffered a shoulder injury last week.
- 1:08:38Third and one to go. Back to pass goes Foraco.
- 1:08:42Scrabbling around is going to be head for a goal.
- 1:08:45Tom Goss knocks Phil Tennessee senior playing one of his greatest days.
- 1:08:50And that Michigan defensive line came through there like a rocket to knock Foraco down.
- 1:08:57Cecil Pryor is back in the lineup so he's okay.
- 1:09:01This could be the last play.
- 1:09:03As Foraco fires to Foreman, 45, and he is knocked out of bounds.
- 1:09:08The clock still shows three seconds to go.
- 1:09:11So Michigan State will be able to get off another play perhaps.
- 1:09:16Foreman gathered in his first pass as Michigan just went ahead and let the tie in and grabbed it.
- 1:09:22Now wait a minute, the clock shows three seconds to go.
- 1:09:29That was short, that's right, that was short of the first down so the ball does go over to Michigan.
- 1:09:33I'm sorry.
- 1:09:34Going to get Michigan State five downs here.
- 1:09:37So Michigan will have time to run one more play.
- 1:09:41As Foreman was short of the first down.
- 1:09:44There it'll get her straight here.
- 1:09:46Three seconds now, this should be the final play of the half.
- 1:09:49Michigan leading 13 to 6.
- 1:09:55Dennis Brown going back to pass, fires it, it's complete to Mandage at the 50s,
- 1:10:00swam around, being on his feet at the 45, to the 40.
- 1:10:04Turtle drum hand and it's finally dropped and that will be the final play of the game as Jim Mandage
- 1:10:09just rolling away from Foraco's half down to play out of bounds.
- 1:10:13Well as the team blew the field to start half drive Michigan 13, Michigan State 6.
- 1:10:20Right now we're awaiting the second half kickoff.
- 1:10:23As here comes Frank Titus and here comes the boot.
- 1:10:26A line drive kick, hitting on the Spartan 5 and picked up there by Highsmith for the 10 to the 15.
- 1:10:3120, 25, hurdles one man, 30 and he's up for the 32 yard line.
- 1:10:37In that first half Michigan picked up seven first downs as compared to 11 for Michigan State.
- 1:10:42On the ground Michigan with 105 yards, the Spartan 124.
- 1:10:47Michigan gained 90 yards through the air.
- 1:10:50The Spartan's 35 for a total of 195 yards for Michigan in 159 for State.
- 1:10:57Michigan attempted seven passes completed three, had one interception.
- 1:11:01Michigan State tried eight, completed four and they had two intercepted.
- 1:11:05First and 10 to go for the Spartans.
- 1:11:07They're running from their own 33.
- 1:11:09Foraco gives off to the first man through full back Dick Perlinski and he's right up over the middle of the line,
- 1:11:14the 35 yard line to about the 36, tripped up by Henry Hill, the middle guard.
- 1:11:23Passing along some other scores here that we have at our first opportunity.
- 1:11:31Second down now six yards to go.
- 1:11:34Michigan leading 13 to six as the handoff this time is given to Tommy Love and he submarines up close to the 40 yard line.
- 1:11:41Again right over the middle of his own line, Tom Goss getting a hand down.
- 1:11:46Dan Parks.
- 1:11:54Ball resting just shy of the 40 yard line.
- 1:11:56Make it third down and two yards to go and a big play for the Spartans.
- 1:12:00Over the wall at center comes Eddie McCloud, the senior from Fairborn, Ohio.
- 1:12:06In motion to the left goes Perlinski, wide pitch off the lower.
- 1:12:09On the left side he goes, cuts back in at the 42, the 42, 43 yard line and looks from here, but he has the first down.
- 1:12:18Tackle made by George Huey for Michigan, limping off the field now is Tommy Love and Don Heisman comes in to take his place.
- 1:12:26And there's an injured Michigan man, George Huey, who made that tackle, Barry Pearson, a junior from St. Ignace coming in for Michigan.
- 1:12:36The officials have called for a time out to measure for the first down and it is just enough for a first down for Michigan State.
- 1:12:51George Huey has lifted off the field and Barry Pearson has gone in for it.
- 1:13:01So it's first and 10 to go for the Spartans at their own 42 yard line.
- 1:13:07Don Heisman, a junior from New Brunswick, New Jersey, has replaced Tommy Love at the tailback position for Michigan State.
- 1:13:13Center of the slot to the right is Wiedemeyer and most to the right goes Perlinski.
- 1:13:16The handoff is given to Heisman, finds a big hole over the left side of the trap and he's inside the 50, down to the Michigan 48 yard line before Barry Pearson made the stop.
- 1:13:27Downed up to Doherty and the Spartans coming right at Barry Pearson. He just got into the ball game with George Huey coming out with a slight head injury, a little busy coming off the field.
- 1:13:36And they ran that ball right straight at Pearson but he was equal to the challenge and brought down the runner.
- 1:13:41David just a half yard shy of the first down as the ball is inside the 49 of Michigan.
- 1:13:47As the handoff again is given to Heisman, he's hit up a line of scrimmage for the looks as though he's got enough for the first down as he fell down to the 47 yard line as he was hit by Tom Goss.
- 1:14:01And let's see, are we going to have to have another measurement? We are. They're going to bring the chains in once again.
- 1:14:09Let's quickly pause 10 seconds for station identification. This is the University of Michigan broadcasting service.
- 1:14:16To UOM, the University of Michigan station in handoff.
- 1:14:20The
- 1:14:40Spartans tend to go over the Michigan 48 yard line. The handoff is given to Heisman.
- 1:14:47Inside the Michigan 30 yard line by Barry Pearson.
- 1:14:52Heisman exploded over the left side of his own line.
- 1:14:58And Jerry Hartman is now limping off the field. He has been hampered by ankle injuries throughout this season.
- 1:15:07Going in to take his place is Bob Wedge.
- 1:15:10And now Michigan is going to have to call for a timeout to get him in there. And we've got a timeout on the field with a score. Michigan 13, Michigan State 6.
- 1:15:20Now let's see if we have time to run down some of these scores that we have.
- 1:15:25The big one at Columbus, Ohio on Columbus Day.
- 1:15:29The Spartans seem to favor the Buckeyes. Between Purdue and Ohio State, there is no score after one half of action. Purdue nothing, Ohio State nothing.
- 1:15:37There is no score between California and Army after the first half. Boston College leads Villanova 21 to nothing after the first half.
- 1:15:46Syracuse on top of Pittsburgh 24 to 17 after one half.
- 1:15:51Princeton 21, Dartmouth 7 after a half.
- 1:15:55Western Michigan 14, Kent State nothing after a half.
- 1:15:59Missouri leads Colorado 7 to nothing after one quarter.
- 1:16:03Alabama 7, Vanderbilt nothing after a quarter.
- 1:16:07North Carolina 17, Maryland 14 after a half.
- 1:16:11VPI 7, Wake Forest nothing after one half.
- 1:16:22John McCoy has replaced Dan Parks, that right side defensive tackle for Michigan now as the handoff is given to Highsmith and he hurdles his way over the middle of the line close to the 25 yard line.
- 1:16:32Highsmith looking more like a high hurdler than a tailback right now as a flag down in that last play.
- 1:16:40Apparently a personal foul penalty coming up against Michigan State. That was the preliminary signal that we got.
- 1:16:50Here comes Jerry Mickles back in at middle guard for Michigan.
- 1:16:55Henry Hill comes out of there and it's a 15 yard walk off against the Spartans moving it back to the Michigan 41.
- 1:17:02Gale is limping a little bit also. This has been a bruising, tough, hard fought football game as they always are between the Spartans and the Wolverines.
- 1:17:14Make it first down and 22 yards to go from Michigan 41.
- 1:17:21Michigan leading 13 to 6.
- 1:17:24Berlinski and Highsmith lined up in the eye as Berlinski goes in motion to handoff to Highsmith and right up the middle he goes and another trap down to the 33 yard line where he was hit by Ed Moore.
- 1:17:37Right side linebacker a sophomore from Youngstown, Ohio.
- 1:17:41Here comes Gordon Baudel into the Michigan State lineup. Al Brenner going out of there at split end.
- 1:17:47That time they had Berlinski in motion to the right. They pulled the left side linebacker from Michigan away with him and opened up the middle for the trap and they sprung Highsmith loose.
- 1:17:59Third down 13 yards to go. A game of nine in the last play.
- 1:18:02Back to pass goes Falaco. Jerry Mickles, middle guard, senior from Chicago, Illinois and Tom Gough.
- 1:18:13Welcome to that Michigan State line to nail Falaco back at the 42 yard line of Michigan.
- 1:18:25Tom Gough, pick himself up off the ground. He looks as if he's at least 98 years of age. He's about 16 the way he races around out there.
- 1:18:37His nickname is Goose for his distinctive walk.
- 1:18:41In there to do the funding now is Dick Berlinski coming up to the 50 as he gets it away.
- 1:18:47A high putt that will hit on the five and go in. Let's see. A flag goes down. It went into the end zone.
- 1:18:57But let's check it out as a flag was thrown.
- 1:19:09And they're going to bring it out to the 20 to put it in play. There was not control of that football as there has to be to down it.
- 1:19:16You can't simply touch a football on a putt and expect it to be grounded at that point.
- 1:19:21And that's what happened that time as the Spartans did get a hand on it about the half yard line, but it bounced into the end zone and there was no control.
- 1:19:29So they will bring it up to the 21st and 10 to go. There is 1041 showing on the clock in this third quarter. Michigan holding a 13 to 6 lead.
- 1:19:37Jim Betts now playing flankerback as John Gabler is out with a rib injury.
- 1:19:42Dennis Brown sliding down the right side. He's going to run with the ball and he is hit and dropped back with the 20 by Gary Noah, a sophomore, defensive left end from St. Clair Shores.
- 1:19:55Here's a first period big-time score. Indiana 7, Iowa nothing.
- 1:20:02Downlaw assisted on that tackle. Here comes Jack Harpring into the lineup at left guard for Dick Calderazzo. Harpring, a sophomore.
- 1:20:12Very personal lineman. Played about any interior lineman position.
- 1:20:18Second out, a loss of one in the last play. Make it second and 11 as Brown hands off to Johnson and he is hit on a bruising tackle right at the line of scrimmage by Bill Dawson.
- 1:20:28Oh to Johnson. Unlimbered tackle on Johnson. Right at the line of scrimmage. No game. Third down and still 11.
- 1:20:40Iowa State leads Kansas State 7 to nothing after one quarter.
- 1:20:52Here's a big third down and 11 now as they flank Pets to the right.
- 1:20:59As back to pass, a little swing pass off to Johnson at the 20. Hip-on one man but is knocked off his feet at the 25-yard line.
- 1:21:07Kenny Hepp made the tackle on Johnson as he simply dove for his knees and blocked him out of bounds at the 25 before Johnson could turn upfield any farther.
- 1:21:19Hepp, who was shaken up early in the ballgame, back in that defensive secondary for Michigan State.
- 1:21:24So Michigan now will be forced to give up the football. Fourth down and still five yards to go.
- 1:21:30Mark Warner will be doing the punting again for Michigan.
- 1:21:36And this time they're dropping Frank Waters back as the single deep man and he feels the pun at the 38. Back to the 40 and is snowed under by four Michigan tacklers at the 40-yard line of Michigan State.
- 1:21:53As they unpiled, Dan Deardor, Bob Pengsa, and Ron Johnson all off the pile.
- 1:22:0527-yard punt for Warner, run back of two. Resting right at the 40-yard line of Michigan State.
- 1:22:11Hurston 10 to go for the Spartans. Eddie McCloud over the ball at center. Baird and Saul at the guards. Van Elst and Wycinski the tackles and the handoff is given to Don Highsmith.
- 1:22:20And again, he hurdles over the right side of his own line and picks up about four to the 44-yard line. Dan Parks in on the stop for Michigan.
- 1:22:29And Henry Hill who is back in at middle guard. A pair of sophomores.
- 1:22:36Michigan now with three sophomores in that defensive lineup. Hill, Parks, and Moore.
- 1:22:43Second down and six yards to go.
- 1:22:47Wiedemeyer seven to slot to the left and the handoff again is given to Highsmith. He spins away from two tacklers and moves it close to the 50-yard line.
- 1:22:54Holding onto his ankles was Cecil Pryor as the ball resting just shy of the 50-yard line.
- 1:23:04Third down and less than a foot to go for the first down.
- 1:23:10George Huey back into the Michigan lineup now. That's good news for Michigan fans.
- 1:23:19Third down, less than a yard. Verrocco is going to dive forward himself as he's over the 50 and apparently has the first down.
- 1:23:27He ran into Henry Hill. Verrocco got enough for the first down and that is the 50th first down of the day for Michigan State.
- 1:23:37Michigan State sticking pretty much to the ground.
- 1:23:40176 yards on the ground as opposed to 35 through the air.
- 1:23:54Hirst and 10 to go for the Spartans. Wiedemeyer in the slot to the left.
- 1:23:58Bowdell is the split left end and on the reverse it's given off to Wiedemeyer.
- 1:24:02Around the right side he goes down to the 45-yard line. Runs into Phil Seymour and Brian Healy as they spot the ball shy at the 45 in Michigan territory.
- 1:24:17Make it second down and six yards to go. The Michigan defensive line now reading Seymour Gostensig, Hill, Moore, Parks and Pryor.
- 1:24:32On the second down and six play. The handoff is given to Heisman. A big hole over the left side. He's down to the 40, the 35-yard line.
- 1:24:41As Bob Wedge made the stop on him from his right safety position and it's enough for another first down, number 16 for the Spartans.
- 1:24:50John Baird and Eddie McCloud are doing a tremendous job up front for the Spartans, opening up that hole for Heisman who has replaced Tommy Love who limped off the field early in this half.
- 1:25:04First and ten to go. Time running with Weston Souther Minis to go in the third quarter. Michigan State trailing seven to six. Heisman again with the football and over the right side he goes this time.
- 1:25:13Down to the 31-yard line. Tom Gost, Tom Stensig both on the tackle. Nothing fancy, nothing devilish about this at all. It's straight power running by Don Heisman and some great blocking on the part of the Spartans.
- 1:25:28Michigan has called for a timeout. There's a timeout on the field with the score Michigan 13, Michigan State six.
- 1:25:37Tom, I think the fact that Michigan State is playing a grind-em-out type of ballgame, they haven't gone for the bomb as at this point. I think they're just that one occasion they did early in the first quarter.
- 1:25:48I think they're pretty well, give the commentary on the Michigan passing attack. Doherty knows that Michigan can score in the air. He wants to hold onto that football for the duration of the ballgame if he possibly could and give Michigan just as little an opportunity to score as they can.
- 1:26:04State has made about, oh, I think what, four first hours is just a matter of an inch or two out there and that's been actually the difference in Michigan getting the ball and having an opportunity to score and they're not. You've got to look at that as the game continues.
- 1:26:19If they can keep this ground game moving as they have been so grudgingly that it's going to hurt Michigan because one quick four by State and they're right back in the ballgame and in the lead.
- 1:26:44The ball is rest 31 yard line of Michigan in possession of the Spartans. Second down and six to go and the clock shows six and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter. Michigan leading 13 to six, but the Spartans again are driving.
- 1:26:58High formation behind Falaco as he gives off to Highsmith, cuts back in, finds a hole and serves a 25 and is close to a 25 and here's a fumble. Let's see it picks up in midair by George Ruhi and a stop immediately and Michigan takes over.
- 1:27:14Highsmith fumble, the ball came right up to Ruhi in midair and he fell immediately and Michigan has stopped the drive at the low 19. John Highsmith that time made a great run up the middle and he was dragging a couple of Michigan tacklers and as he fell to the ground the ball squirted up in the air and Ruhi was standing there and he was just surrounded quickly.
- 1:27:33He never had a chance to return, he was just flat footed and a real break for Michigan. Well let's see if the Michigan offense now, buoyed up by that fumble recovery by their defensive courts.
- 1:27:46Fake handoff by Brown, quick pass up to Mandic at the 25, he spins away from one man and knocks out of bounds at the 30.
- 1:27:54J Breslin and Charles Bailey came over to make the stop on tight end Jim Mandich.
- 1:28:04First down for Michigan, they're eighth of the afternoon but first for the second half. Brown has gone to the air nine times, has hit on five.
- 1:28:13And a major share of that receiving has been on the part of Jim Mandich.
- 1:28:21And John Gaber of course catching the one pass for a touchdown.
- 1:28:27But I believe, the other four have gone to Mandich.
- 1:28:3345 to the 40, 45 to the 50, 45 to the 40, 45, here we go, 25 yard ball. Jack Hartman put on a beautiful block along with Jim Bants and finally Frank Water has got back to make the stop on Johnson.
- 1:28:56And every time he turns it loose, you run out of adductor. He put one man into the hole back at about the 35 yard line, he offered him an ankle, a hip, a shoulder.
- 1:29:09And when the defensive man went to grab for all three of them, none of them were there.
- 1:29:14First in ten to go for Michigan at the Spartan 27 yard line.
- 1:29:19Down, quick spot pass, intended for split end Jerry Imsland at the 25 yard line, thrown a little hard, Imsland couldn't hang on to it.
- 1:29:29First quarter score, Notre Dame seven, Northwestern nothing.
- 1:29:34The Wildcats were the most ambitious and rugged schedule, I believe, in the annals of football in the first five games.
- 1:29:44Playing Miami or Florida, Southern Cal, Purdue, Northwestern.
- 1:29:54Here's the handoff given to Johnson, right to the 25 yard line, but that's all he's going to get.
- 1:30:01A fine tackle put on by Rich Saul.
- 1:30:09Linebacker on the left side, and Johnson never was able to pick up any kind of steam on that one.
- 1:30:16The law resting at the 25 yard line.
- 1:30:19Third down, eight to go.
- 1:30:23Brown has now thrown ten times, completed five for 106 yards.
- 1:30:29Brown takes on the bootleg, rolling off to the right, goes back to the left, Johnson is all by himself, but he was overthrown by Brown.
- 1:30:37Oh, Rod Johnson had strung out from his tailback position as Brown started the motion all to the right.
- 1:30:46Suddenly reversed himself, threw back to the left, and Brown simply tossed it over his head.
- 1:30:53Tim Killian is coming to the ball game now for Michigan, and apparently will be attempting a field goal from the 32 yard line.
- 1:31:00Killian, a big strong sophomore from Lincoln Park, six-four, 220.
- 1:31:05Don Moritz, South Haven sophomore, kneeling at the 32.
- 1:31:08Here's the kick, it's a high one in that direction.
- 1:31:13So good, they say, off to the left.
- 1:31:16Killian had the height, but not the range.
- 1:31:20So does Spartans hold on defense.
- 1:31:23After an electrifying run by Rod Johnson, and driven the ball deep into Michigan State territory, the Spartans rose up to stop the Wolverines' goal.
- 1:31:33We've got 4.58 to go in this third quarter of Michigan, still leading 13 to 6.
- 1:31:38Michigan has not won against State since 1955 here in Ann Arbor.
- 1:31:47The Spartans put it in play, first and 10 to go, and the handoff is given to the high-fifth, but he has stopped dead at his side.
- 1:31:53Henry Hill, submarineing in there for his middle guard position.
- 1:31:56I left the ball carrier, he was up by Hill and got it.
- 1:32:04They did give him about a half-yard gain on it, so we'll call it second and nine, as the ball resting just over the 20-yard line of Michigan State.
- 1:32:13Don Highsmith has certainly put on quite a show since coming in here in this second half, replacing Tommy Love.
- 1:32:22Back to pass goes Marocco, getting the time, fires it, it is complete to Baldell at the 30-yard line.
- 1:32:27He's hit immediately, and down at the 32.
- 1:32:31Gordon Baldell, the Allen Park, Jr., was hit by Tom Curtis after he gathered in that Bill Marocco pass at the 32-yard line.
- 1:32:39That's enough for another first down.
- 1:32:41Now that is Marocco's ninth pass of the day, and his fifth completion.
- 1:32:45Henry Hill comes out of there, and Miklos goes in at middle guard.
- 1:32:48Tom, a great toss by Marocco that time.
- 1:32:50He was just about to be surrounded by Goss and Park, and he threw the needle upfield.
- 1:32:54He did a fine job.
- 1:32:55Baldell has gone out of there, and Brenner back in and split in.
- 1:32:58Wiedemeyer's blank wide to the left, Brenner's split to the right.
- 1:33:01Marocco hands off to Highsmith, and he is hit at the 32-yard line.
- 1:33:04It spins through with a 34.
- 1:33:06Ed Moore dragged him down.
- 1:33:09Highsmith has that high, pumping knee action that you see on so many great runners.
- 1:33:18As we mentioned earlier, and I think it bears repeating,
- 1:33:21Gale Sayers has been his idol for some time, and he seems to patter himself after Sayers.
- 1:33:27Of course, as if anybody could come close to the Mr. Sayers.
- 1:33:33Brenner out, Baldell back in and split in.
- 1:33:35He's off to the right.
- 1:33:36Wiedemeyer to the left.
- 1:33:37Marocco bootlegging the ball off to the left.
- 1:33:38Looking downfield, he's going to run to the ball, back to the 40-yard line.
- 1:33:43Hit there by two Michigan tacklers, Tom Goss and George Huey.
- 1:33:53The ball resting right at the 40-yard line, third down, and a yard to go for the first down.
- 1:34:02Less than three minutes to go in this third quarter.
- 1:34:07Marocco now in a big third down play.
- 1:34:10Sends in motion, Malinsky to the left, pitch out back to Highsmith, turns the corner at the 40.
- 1:34:14He's up over the 42 to the 43, and it looks like he's got the first down.
- 1:34:18It's 18 for the Spartans today.
- 1:34:21Here comes Pryor out of there, and Jim Willeit back in at defensive right end.
- 1:34:26Pryor getting a breather, talking with Denny Fitzgerald down on the field.
- 1:34:32Fitzgerald on the phones up at the press box right now.
- 1:34:34Michigan State now has called for a timeout.
- 1:34:37So there is a timeout on the field with a score of Michigan 13, Michigan State 6.
- 1:34:47Now we've got to visit just a little bit about Tom Goss.
- 1:34:50Here's a senior coming into his own this season.
- 1:34:52He's definitely, from this performance out here this afternoon, taken over the defensive leadership,
- 1:34:58which Michigan has needed so badly.
- 1:35:00They're really an organized outfit out there today on defense.
- 1:35:03And you know, the number of tackles that he has made in this ball game is outstanding by the fact that Michigan State has not run at him.
- 1:35:10Most of his tackles are made 35 or 40 yards across field on sweep plays,
- 1:35:15and he's got to avoid about nine guys taking a shot at him on the way across.
- 1:35:19He's an excellent football player, big and agile, and he just never lets up, no matter what the occasion is.
- 1:35:24He's been in there pressing for aggro on several occasions,
- 1:35:27just missing an opportunity to drop the Spartan quarterback on passing situations.
- 1:35:32At the end of the half, Georgia Tech having Tennessee 10.
- 1:35:35At the end of three quarters, Columbia, even though they're number 14.
- 1:35:40At the end of the half, Temple 14, but now 16.
- 1:35:46Spartans are putting the play close to 10, quickly some scores.
- 1:35:49Tennessee leads Georgia Tech 10-0 after the first half.
- 1:35:52Albert leads Columbia 14-7 after three quarters.
- 1:35:56Air Force leads Navy 7-6 after the first quarter.
- 1:35:59The ball is resting squarely at the Michigan State 43-yard line.
- 1:36:04Postons end the goal for the Spartan.
- 1:36:06The clock's showing only 2-24 remaining in this third quarter.
- 1:36:09Weidemeyer is setting the slot to the right as Baldel is split off to the right.
- 1:36:12Handoff is given to Highsmith.
- 1:36:14He fights his way down inside the 45-yard line to about 46.
- 1:36:19Highsmith doing the Yeoman ball-carrying duties now for Ducky Doherty.
- 1:36:23Spartan runs into Bob Wedge on that play, and Ed Moore.
- 1:36:27He's just shy of the 47-yard line, still in Michigan State territory.
- 1:36:31But again, on the last play of three.
- 1:36:37Make a second down and seven yards to go.
- 1:36:42In motion to the left goes Berlinski.
- 1:36:43Wide touch-out to Highsmith, fighting his way back inside.
- 1:36:45Over the 50 he goes.
- 1:36:47Down about the Michigan 48-yard line.
- 1:36:52That's going to be enough for another first down.
- 1:36:54Highsmith that time is following Ron Saul.
- 1:36:57Over his own left side, Tom Dixie made the stop.
- 1:37:01And let's see, we have an injured player on the field.
- 1:37:04It's Michigan State Spartan, so Michigan State has called for another timeout.
- 1:37:08So there is a timeout on the field with a score of Michigan 13, Michigan State 6.
- 1:37:22We were mentioning earlier time what a bruising ballgame this is, and Michigan felt the blow to Hartman
- 1:37:29as he went out with an ankle injury here early in the second half.
- 1:37:32He's had that ankle problem all year long, and he is a fine defensive back.
- 1:37:37And certainly he works together with his teammates back there as an excellent secondary unit for Michigan.
- 1:37:42And when he's out, they really miss him because those guys communicate,
- 1:37:45and they've walked an awful lot of footballs together.
- 1:37:48And you can bet that he'll be trying to get back into that lineup just as quickly as he can.
- 1:37:52Woo!
- 1:37:59First period score, Cornell nothing, Penn nothing.
- 1:38:04Out of ease.
- 1:38:14The injured Spartan player, Don Highsmith, has left the field under his own power.
- 1:38:19And Earl Anderson, a sophomore, has checked in for him.
- 1:38:22He is the third tailback now running for Duffy Doherty today, and he's just back from an injury himself.
- 1:38:27In motion to the right, Joe Kowalinski, pitch up to Anderson, finds a hole, back in at the 40,
- 1:38:32down to the 36, to the 35-yard line.
- 1:38:36Dan Parks went over to make the stop, but it's a push down for Michigan State.
- 1:38:41Well, regardless of who Duffy Doherty puts in that tailback position,
- 1:38:45he's coming on out there looking like Doak Walker.
- 1:38:48And that time, sophomore Earl Anderson from Tipton, Georgia, a scat back at 5'9", 198.
- 1:38:55Stumpy left, tore around that right side, got a good block from Kowalinski,
- 1:38:59and gave Michigan State a first down at the Michigan 35.
- 1:39:03Again, the kid goes to Anderson, and he finds a hole over the right side,
- 1:39:07and he's inside the 30-yard line.
- 1:39:13And he got some good blocks from Ron Soll and Craig Lysinski before Phil Seymour could make the tackle for Michigan.
- 1:39:20He had moved it to the 28, second down, and three.
- 1:39:29Wide to the left goes Gordon Baudel.
- 1:39:34Kowalinski and Anderson behind as the right mid-jump goes to Anderson,
- 1:39:40and he has bottled up, thrown to the first down at the 28-yard line.
- 1:39:44He's got the power sweep around the left side, but Breyer, Seymour, and Stuncy all met him head on.
- 1:39:52They mark it at the 27, make it third down, and two.
- 1:39:58A good score from the East, Tim now leads Cornell, 7-0 after the half.
- 1:40:05Henry Hill in his middle guard for Michigan.
- 1:40:09Only 12 seconds remaining in this third quarter.
- 1:40:12Could be the final play of the third quarter.
- 1:40:14Handoff given to Anderson, bulls his way over the right side, and he is over the 25, down to the 23.
- 1:40:20It's another first down for Michigan State.
- 1:40:27Getting off the bottom of the pile, Phil Seymour, with the clock showing 2-1,
- 1:40:34and that's the end of the third quarter with a score of Michigan 13, Michigan State 6.
- 1:40:39The University of Michigan marching band playing the victor.
- 1:40:42The Michigan State marching band playing the Spartan fight song.
- 1:40:45Both cheering sections alive now and on their feet as they are looking forward to a fourth quarter
- 1:40:52that should take its place with one of the best in Michigan State Michigan history.
- 1:40:56Now I notice when the ball is being exchanged, it's off down here to the north end of the field.
- 1:41:00Both teams just about walk down to their new positions.
- 1:41:04I'll tell you, the Michigan defense and the Spartan offense, they were the third grade of action.
- 1:41:10Here we go, first and 10 for the Spartans at the Michigan 22-yard line,
- 1:41:15and quarterback Bill Farocco asks the crowd to calm it down a bit,
- 1:41:19as his players unable to hear the signals.
- 1:41:22Michigan so far in this game has gone to the ground 25 times in rushing and 11 into the air.
- 1:41:29Michigan State 63 plays on the ground and nine through the air,
- 1:41:34so you can see the difference in ball control, 2-1 in favor of Michigan State.
- 1:41:41Thanks to our Demon statistician Bill Swisher for that little bit of information.
- 1:41:45As in motion to the right goes Berlinski, and up the middle goes Anderson,
- 1:41:48but he is hit by Tom Goss at the 20-yard line, and Cecil Pryor.
- 1:41:53Also Tom Stincy, as Anderson moved it to the 20.
- 1:41:57Michigan State so far has lost two tailbacks, Tommy Love and Don Highsmith.
- 1:42:03Because of injuries, Anderson is the third tailback employed today by Duffy Daugherty.
- 1:42:10Second down, eight yards to go.
- 1:42:12Gordon Bodell, split off wide to the right.
- 1:42:15Charlie Wiedemeyer in the slot to the right, motion goes to the right,
- 1:42:18wide pitch out to Anderson, and he is hit for a long.
- 1:42:22Bill Seymour broke through there from his defensive end position to nail Anderson back at the 20.
- 1:42:30Well, they mark it shy of the 20.
- 1:42:36So he lost about a half yard on the play.
- 1:42:38Make it third down and still a little over eight to go.
- 1:42:43Michigan leading 13 to 6.
- 1:42:45There has been no scoring in this second half.
- 1:42:50As both teams scored the first time, they had their hands in the football,
- 1:42:54but since that time the defense has taken over.
- 1:42:58Morocco straight back to pass.
- 1:43:00Fires one, it's caught, down to the Michigan, seven lead to the five.
- 1:43:04Al Brenner coming up with a big reception.
- 1:43:07He was hit immediately by Stincy Kenhuy at the Michigan.
- 1:43:12Six yard line they mark it.
- 1:43:14First and goal to go for the Spartans.
- 1:43:17And Michigan State with a chance to take over the lead for the first time this afternoon.
- 1:43:25Here comes Ed Moore out of there.
- 1:43:28At a tackle.
- 1:43:32Dick McCoy checked in for him.
- 1:43:35First and goal for the Spartans for the Michigan six.
- 1:43:37Morocco hands off to Anderson. He's inside the five, down about the two.
- 1:43:45Cecil Pryor and Tom Stincy, both piling along with Henry Hill.
- 1:43:50Let's see where they mark it. At the three, second down and goal to go.
- 1:43:55Anderson that time carried the ball like a loaf of bread out there.
- 1:44:02And that will give coaches fits as he was hanging it out there.
- 1:44:07That's kind of an easy game.
- 1:44:09Morocco turns again, gives to Anderson and he's in there.
- 1:44:12Quick down, Michigan State.
- 1:44:18Earl Anderson, third straight tailback from Houston, Georgia.
- 1:44:24Holding his way about the three yard down into the end zone.
- 1:44:30And now it's 13 to 12 in favor of Michigan.
- 1:44:34Let's see if the Spartans go for the one or the two point conversion.
- 1:44:38This is what gives coaches nightmares.
- 1:44:43Charlie Wiedemeyer is kneeling and Gary Boyce will be attempting the extra point.
- 1:44:51I don't think anybody's sitting here at the stadium. They're all on their feet.
- 1:44:58And the officials now motioning for the Michigan State fan to get back a little bit
- 1:45:02as they were kind of encroaching onto the end zone.
- 1:45:07Gary Boyce will try to put it through and tie this ball game up.
- 1:45:13The snap, the ball's down, the kick, it's a fake.
- 1:45:15And Wiedemeyer is rolling back the path. He fires it. It's complete!
- 1:45:19The two point conversion to tight end Frank Warham. And Michigan State has gone on top 14 to 15.
- 1:45:41The Spartans with a great bit of deception.
- 1:45:45Charlie Wiedemeyer kneeling at the 10, spun off of it, went back to the 20
- 1:45:49and he alluded a Michigan tackler and fired that ball right where it had to be
- 1:45:54to Frank Foreman, the tight end from Louisville, Kentucky.
- 1:45:58And the Spartans have gone on top 14 to 13.
- 1:46:03But we still got 12.48 to go.
- 1:46:07That last drive covered 80 yards in 16 plays with Anderson taking it in from 3 yards out.
- 1:46:15Gary Boyce will kick off for Michigan State.
- 1:46:19George Huey standing in his own 5.
- 1:46:22Here he comes, low kick.
- 1:46:24Hits on the 15 picked up by Huey for 10, the 15, the 20.
- 1:46:29And is hit at the 24 yard line.
- 1:46:34What a good driving tackle by Frank Waters.
- 1:46:38And let's see the last man up, pick number 97.
- 1:46:52Martin.
- 1:46:55Michigan will put it in play.
- 1:46:57First and 10 to go, we'll get a station break here at our first opportunity.
- 1:47:05First and 10 for Michigan.
- 1:47:07In motion to the right goes Johnson.
- 1:47:09Wow, keeps it and he's up over the 25 and that's it.
- 1:47:13Now quickly let's pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:47:16This is the University of Michigan Broadcasting Service.
- 1:47:20Town Hemingway, Dave McKay and Ed Burroughs back here at Michigan Stadium where the Wolverines have a second and eight to go.
- 1:47:35They trail 14 to 13 for the first time in the ball game.
- 1:47:38A flag goes down and it's going to be against Michigan as the pass is thrown up the other end and it's incomplete.
- 1:47:44Flankerback Jim Betts just moved a second too quickly from his right side that time as either he couldn't hear Brown's count or he jumped off just a minute second, but that was enough and an illegal procedure penalty against Michigan.
- 1:47:59Here comes Bill Harrison to the lineup for the Wolverines and Jerry Imsland comes out of split and let's see what the Spartans want to do with the penalty.
- 1:48:06They evidently are going to decline it.
- 1:48:11Of course there was no gain on that last play with the incomplete forward pass and the Spartans say no, we'll take the down and that makes it third and eight.
- 1:48:21Reiner goes out of there now as another defensive lineman checks in there for Michigan State.
- 1:48:30Betts flanks to the left. Harris, split right.
- 1:48:34Bates to Johnson. Brown is chased back there and he finally gets one of it to Crawl, but he's going to be hit for a loss back at the 18 yard line.
- 1:48:43Tremendous pursuit on the part of the Spartans that time.
- 1:48:47Charles Bailey had Brown right around the ankles as he got rid of the ball.
- 1:48:51Mike Hogan and Jay Breslin stayed however right with Crawl as he caught the ball and hit him immediately.
- 1:48:57So it moves it back to the 18 yard line and it'll be fourth down 16 to go and Michigan will be forced to punt.
- 1:49:05Watch Michigan State will put a punt rush on this time the likes you've never seen.
- 1:49:11Warner has to come up to the 10, he just gets rid of it.
- 1:49:14It's off the side angling for the sidelines and no it's going to stay in as it finally rolls dead on the Michigan State 42 yard line.
- 1:49:26So the Spartans now with the lead and the football and 11, 16 to go.
- 1:49:31That was a 32 yard punt by Warner.
- 1:49:34The Spartans have it at their own 42.
- 1:49:38VPI leads Wake Forest 7-0 after three quarters.
- 1:49:44Auburn has taken the lead now over Clemson 14-3.
- 1:49:51After three quarters, first and 10 to go for Michigan State, they have Wiedemeyer sending a slot to the right.
- 1:49:57And the handoff is given to Highsmith who's back into the ball game for Michigan State.
- 1:50:01And Don Highsmith has a couple up to the 44 yard line where he is hit by Henry Hill and Tom Stincy.
- 1:50:10So Highsmith, we're happy to report is okay and back in there for Michigan State.
- 1:50:15But what a job Earl Anderson did in coming in to replace him.
- 1:50:22The clock shows just under 11 minutes to go.
- 1:50:26Western Michigan leads Kent State 14-0 after three quarters.
- 1:50:34Morocco on the reverse to Wiedemeyer comes back to the 45 yard line but is hit on a great tackle by Bill Seymour.
- 1:50:40Right at the 45 yard line as that time Seymour didn't move over.
- 1:50:45He held his position from the defensive left end and let Wiedemeyer run right to him.
- 1:50:51Make it third down and seven to go.
- 1:50:54And the big one down in the southwest today, Oklahoma leads Texas 7-3 after one quarter.
- 1:51:04Dartmouth leads Princeton 27-7 after three quarters.
- 1:51:08Big third down and seven yards here.
- 1:51:10State would like to hold on that football.
- 1:51:12A fumble by Farakho but he's back to pick it up himself way back in the 37-38 yard line.
- 1:51:19And although the Spartans recovered the fumble, it means they do have to give up the football.
- 1:51:26Michigan did not have it in good field position the last series of plays.
- 1:51:31And now a lot will rest on the putting ability of Dick Berlinski if he can boom it out of there,
- 1:51:36the Wolverines backed up again.
- 1:51:40Berlinski will be putting from around his own 30.
- 1:51:48Michigan dropped three men back.
- 1:51:51Hooey in the deep spot.
- 1:51:54Beautiful punt by Berlinski.
- 1:51:56A wonderful punt and it goes all the way into the end zone.
- 1:51:59So Bill bring it out to the 20.
- 1:52:01Berlinski never had a chance as that ball sailed over his head.
- 1:52:0862-yard punt from the line of scrimmage by Dick Berlinski.
- 1:52:13And he doesn't have a lot of wind behind him.
- 1:52:15It was seven miles an hour from the south at the start of the game and it doesn't look like it's picked up too much.
- 1:52:20Now the name Dick Berlinski has been an echo in Michigan-Michigan state games for three years.
- 1:52:25He's always done an excellent job against the Wolverines.
- 1:52:28He's had a surgery in the spring but bounced back from it.
- 1:52:33And remember it's his blocking that's bringing these tailbacks, Highsmith Anderson, loose.
- 1:52:37First and ten to go, Brown White pitch out to Johnson, cuts back at the line of scrimmage
- 1:52:41and is hit by Frank Waters right at the 21-yard line.
- 1:52:48Assisting on the tackle was Wilt Martin.
- 1:52:56On the last three or four occasions that Dennis Brown has thrown the ball, he has overthrown his receiver
- 1:53:00or thrown it right on by him and he's going to have to calm down and thread the needle
- 1:53:04if Michigan is going to sustain a drive.
- 1:53:06They're not going to be able to do it all the way on the ground.
- 1:53:08That's obvious right now.
- 1:53:10Johnson gained only a yard, second down and nine yards to go.
- 1:53:13Brown on the boonleg back to pass, fires it, it is caught at the 32-yard line
- 1:53:17and knocked out of bounds immediately.
- 1:53:20Here's put on Jerry Imselin, knocking him out with Frank Waters.
- 1:53:30It's a first down for Michigan for Brown.
- 1:53:32That is seven out of 14 for him this afternoon.
- 1:53:36They mark it at the 32.
- 1:53:38Kyle DeRazzo comes back in at left guard for Michigan.
- 1:53:41Up ring goes out.
- 1:53:42First and ten to go for the Wilburines at their own 32-yard line.
- 1:53:45The clock showing 8.41 to go in the ballgame.
- 1:53:47Michigan trailing 14 to 13.
- 1:53:50Metz flank wide to the left.
- 1:53:53John and Johnson are split behind Brown as Brown takes to Johnson.
- 1:53:56Back to pass he goes, fires it over the middle, it's caught up at the 45 of Michigan.
- 1:54:00Knocked down immediately at the 46.
- 1:54:06Let's check it at the tight end, Jim Mandich.
- 1:54:09And he was tackled by Al Gwinnard.
- 1:54:15At the 47 of Michigan, Bill Harris goes in, Jerry Imselin comes out.
- 1:54:20Another first down for Michigan.
- 1:54:23They're 11th of the afternoon.
- 1:54:25Brown is 8 out of 15.
- 1:54:27And the crowd starts to roar, go, go.
- 1:54:33As Brown again on a fake, back to pass he goes, gets a good block, stays on his feet, gets away from two men,
- 1:54:38finally fires it up, field it in.
- 1:54:45And he's here.
- 1:55:09The stadium is in pandemonium. 8.05 to go, Michigan back on top, 19 to 14.
- 1:55:17Jim Mandich catching that pass from Dennis Brown at the Spartan 35,
- 1:55:21and he's simply out in like the rest of the Michigan State defensive secondary into the end zone.
- 1:55:34Now let's see what Michigan's going to go for.
- 1:55:36It looks like they're going for the two-point conversion.
- 1:55:39As Brown sliding off to the right.
- 1:55:42Wait, finally throws it.
- 1:55:44POP!
- 1:55:47It's good for two points, and I think again this time Darby Craw works himself loose.
- 1:55:56It is Darby Craw catching that ball just as he went out of the end zone for a two-point conversion.
- 1:56:03It's a delirious Michigan team as they come off the sideline, and they lead 21 to 14.
- 1:56:09Holy catch what he is.
- 1:56:15Did I say something about Dennis Brown threading the needle?
- 1:56:19There were two batters that had to be drawn, exact, and he threaded the needle right at about the 20-yard line to Mandich
- 1:56:27and again in the end zone to Darby Craw.
- 1:56:31That drive covered 80 yards in four plays.
- 1:56:34Mandich scoring on a 53-yard pass play from Dennis Brown.
- 1:56:40Here comes the kickoff now.
- 1:56:43Frank Titus booms it up in the air and puts it at the 12.
- 1:56:46Picked up by Highsmith at the 15, the 20, the 25, and he's knocked down at the Michigan State 32-33 yard line.
- 1:56:55George Huey in on the stop.
- 1:57:00And now Michigan State.
- 1:57:06Oh, listen to this score.
- 1:57:08Ohio State 13-per-do-nothing after three quarters.
- 1:57:12That could knock the Big Ten into a cocked hat here early in the season.
- 1:57:18Bill Faracco now has to go to the sideline to talk to Duffy Doherty, so Michigan State is called for a timeout.
- 1:57:26So there's a timeout on the field with a score of Michigan 21, Michigan State 14.
- 1:57:35Well, time exactly eight minutes remaining in this ballgame, and that is certainly a lot of time because both scores here came so quickly.
- 1:57:45That's a Purdue score being announced 13-to-nothing.
- 1:57:49What period is that?
- 1:57:50That's a third quarter score, Dave.
- 1:57:52Michigan State 13-per-do-nothing in the third period, Mark.
- 1:57:57But there's a lot of time in this ballgame, and you can bet that State will be trying to maybe grind out another one here and get back into the ballgame down 21-14.
- 1:58:08They've not shown much in the airways.
- 1:58:11What did you say, Tom, before there were nine passes attempted?
- 1:58:15Yeah, Michigan State now has tried 10 and completed six for 59 yards.
- 1:58:20They have not gone to the air very much in the second half.
- 1:58:25They have thrown only two times in the second half.
- 1:58:27Only in one occasion did they throw deep in the entire ballgame.
- 1:58:31That was knocked down very well by Hartman.
- 1:58:42So here we go, first and 10 for Michigan State from their own 33-yard line, and with Ohio State leading Purdue 13-to-nothing after three quarters, this could be the start of something that nobody really looked forward to, Dave, a big 10.
- 1:59:01The officials now call both teams up to the line of scrimmage and are conferring with both squads.
- 1:59:12And now the referee marks the ball in play, and here we go.
- 1:59:17The Spartans now try to come back again.
- 1:59:20Tom Hocko sends Berlinski wide to the left, pitches back to Tommy Love, who's back in the ballgame, and he shoots his way over to 35, close to the 38-yard line.
- 1:59:32Ed Moore in on the stop for Michigan, and Tom Goss.
- 1:59:39And Tom Goss isn't going to go dancing tonight, I'll tell you that.
- 1:59:42He has played one superb ballgame.
- 1:59:47He's going to be lucky if he has enough energy to goose step.
- 1:59:56Second down and five yards to go as Tommy Love is back into the ballgame and takes the wide pitch out, starts around the right side, he's going to throw the ball, Longwood, and almost intercepted, as Bryant Healy had the ball in his hands at the Michigan 35-yard line but couldn't hold on to it.
- 2:00:14Michigan State coming up with a halfback pass that time as Tommy Love is back into the lineup.
- 2:00:22And he fired that ball all the way down to the Michigan 35 intended for Al Brenner, but it was thrown wide of Brenner and right into Healy's hands.
- 2:00:31So make it third and five.
- 2:00:34Brenner is checking out of there and Baudel comes in for him.
- 2:00:38Air Force continues to lead Navy 7-0 after one half.
- 2:00:43The Army has taken a 3-0 lead over California after three quarters.
- 2:00:49Third down, five yards to go, a big play for the Spartans.
- 2:00:53In the option, sliding down is Falaco, pitches back to Love, he's got the first down and he's over the 45-yard line up to about the 48 hit by Tom Curtis.
- 2:01:03And that will be enough for the first down.
- 2:01:05The Spartans in first downs today have 23 compared to Michigan's 12.
- 2:01:13But Michigan leads in the ball game 21-14.
- 2:01:16Down the punishing ground game that Michigan State has been playing, you've got to give an awful lot of credit to their front line.
- 2:01:21They've been doing a tremendous amount of work out there and doing it very well.
- 2:01:26First and 10 to go for Michigan State.
- 2:01:28On the option this time to the left, the pitch back to Love.
- 2:01:31Around the left side he goes with the 50, the 45, out of bounds at the 40-yard line, run out over there by Tom Curtis.
- 2:01:41At the 40-yard line and that will be enough for another first down.
- 2:01:45What do the Spartans have on the ground so far Bill?
- 2:01:48200 and 88 yards.
- 2:01:59John Heismith has come in a tailback now replacing Tommy Love for the Spartans.
- 2:02:03Henry Hills checked out and Jerry Mickles in the middle guard.
- 2:02:06Clock shows 6.49 to go.
- 2:02:08The option to the right this time, Morocco keeps the ball and gets back to the line of scrimmage and that's all.
- 2:02:13Hit by Jerry Mickles, Ed Moore, and Phil Seymour.
- 2:02:19Halftime score, Indiana 21, Iowa 21.
- 2:02:23Those Hawkeyes have an explosive offense out there at Iowa City.
- 2:02:27The main trouble has been defense.
- 2:02:29Next week Dave McKay and I will be in Bloomington, Indiana to take a look at the Hoosiers of Indiana University.
- 2:02:42Second down, 10 yards to go, no game on that last play.
- 2:02:45Clock running with just over 6 minutes to go.
- 2:02:47In motion to the left this time, Berlinski.
- 2:02:49Back to fast, goes for Morocco.
- 2:02:50He fires it over the middle of the Wiedemar, catches it and he's...
- 2:02:52No! He couldn't hold on to it.
- 2:02:56Hit by Phil Seymour as he caught that ball and then the force of Seymour's tackle jarred the ball loose.
- 2:03:05And it was ruled as an incomplete forward pass.
- 2:03:08They bring it back to the 43rd down and 10.
- 2:03:12Notre Dame leads Northwestern only 7-0 after one half.
- 2:03:16Boy, the Wildcats.
- 2:03:19The old story of sink or swim for them this year.
- 2:03:23Minnesota leads Illinois 14-3 after a half.
- 2:03:27Third down and 10.
- 2:03:29Morocco dropping straight back to pass.
- 2:03:31Getting the time, loops one downfield.
- 2:03:33It's intercepted!
- 2:03:34And tackled immediately at the 15-yard line.
- 2:03:37There's a very happy Tom Curtis.
- 2:03:41Frank Foreman and Gordon Baudel made the tackle immediately on Curtis who picked up that interception.
- 2:03:47He had seven last year to tie a big ten mark and he fired that ball 80 yards into the air after he caught it.
- 2:03:54So Michigan now at their own 16.
- 2:03:58And they have one object and one object only right now and that is to hold on to the football and try to eat up the clock.
- 2:04:09Dennis Brown calling for quiet.
- 2:04:12Takes the snap.
- 2:04:14Rolls off to the right.
- 2:04:15He's going to keep the ball back to the 15, to the 20.
- 2:04:17A beautiful block at the 25, the 30, the 45.
- 2:04:20And he's knocked that about.
- 2:04:22Oh, did Harvey Crowe put a block on the left corner back of Michigan State.
- 2:04:28And Dennis Brown is knocked that about at the 42-yard line of Michigan.
- 2:04:42A final score, Harvard 21, Columbia 14.
- 2:04:50First and ten to go for Michigan.
- 2:04:53Dennis Brown moving up to the line of scrimmage.
- 2:04:58Turns and gives off to Garvey Crowe, the first man through and Crowe is up to the 47-yard line.
- 2:05:06Oh, when you're passing out accolades after today's game, don't forget Garvey Crowe.
- 2:05:13Gary Nowak made the tackle on that last play.
- 2:05:17Crowe has unlevered some blistering blocks here this afternoon.
- 2:05:21Plus coming up with some big ball-carrying duties.
- 2:05:26Five-twenty to go in the game.
- 2:05:28Michigan with a seven-point lead and they have the football second and six.
- 2:05:33A handoff to Johnson, finds Rueb over the left side.
- 2:05:36He's inside the 50, down to the Spartan 45.
- 2:05:40Rich Saul in on the tackle.
- 2:05:47And they spot it just over the 45 of Michigan State.
- 2:05:51First down and ten to go for Michigan.
- 2:05:54They have 14 now.
- 2:06:05Up to the line of scrimmage come the Wolverines.
- 2:06:07Over the ball at center goes Dave Jensen.
- 2:06:10The clock running with less than five to go.
- 2:06:13Brown again gives off to Crowe and he fights his way for a couple.
- 2:06:16Down to the 42-43-yard line.
- 2:06:19Richard Benedict from East Lansing made the tackle on Crowe.
- 2:06:22Here comes Calderazo back into the Michigan lineup.
- 2:06:25Hartbrink going out on left guard.
- 2:06:31And now, right now, so much weight lays in the hands of the Michigan offensive line.
- 2:06:37Broadmax, Beardorf, Denson, Calderazo, Pengso.
- 2:06:44These guys control the game.
- 2:06:47A handoff to Johnson, finds Slyte Daylight over the left side.
- 2:06:50And he's inside the 40-to-about-to-38-yard line.
- 2:06:53Stacked up by the right side of the Michigan State line.
- 2:06:58Again, Rich Saul coming over there along with Don Law and Ken Little.
- 2:07:03They mark it.
- 2:07:04Just shy of the 38-yard line.
- 2:07:06Third down, five yards to go.
- 2:07:09And the clock shows less than four minutes to go.
- 2:07:21Third down and five as Brown snaps out the signals.
- 2:07:25Rolling off to the right.
- 2:07:27He's going to keep the ball to the 40-to-35-to-30.
- 2:07:31That's enough for a first down.
- 2:07:34Right out of bounds by Frank Waters.
- 2:07:36As Dennis Brown, again, taking up a tremendous block from Claw on the right side.
- 2:07:42Shot down the sideline to the 29-yard line of Michigan State,
- 2:07:48where it is first and 10 to go for Michigan.
- 2:07:53On a key third down play.
- 2:07:56Brown keeping it himself, sweeping around the right side.
- 2:08:02Here come the Wolverines, first and 10.
- 2:08:05Clock shows 3.35 to go.
- 2:08:10Brown takes the snap, hands off to Johnson, cuts back in over the middle of his own line,
- 2:08:14and he's down to about the 25-yard line.
- 2:08:18Rick Benedict coming off the pile.
- 2:08:24Charles Bailey, as Brown followed his center, Dave Denson, to the 25.
- 2:08:34No score, Mississippi and Georgia, after one quarter of play.
- 2:08:40Second down, six yards to go.
- 2:08:43Clock running with three minutes to go.
- 2:08:47Harris put to the right.
- 2:08:50Betts flank to the left.
- 2:08:52Handoff is given to Claw, and he's stopped at the line of scrimmage for no gain by Rich Saul,
- 2:08:58the linebacker from the left side, who just simply brushed off all the blocking on the part of Michigan
- 2:09:05and wrapped his arms around Claw right at the line of scrimmage, no gain on it, making third down and six.
- 2:09:11Here's another big third down play.
- 2:09:15Right now you've got to watch Dennis Brown and his favorite receiver, Jim Mandich, on this clutch play.
- 2:09:20He may try to pump it right over the middle to Mandich to pick up the first down.
- 2:09:24You may recall they didn't show the Mandich too much in that Navy game.
- 2:09:28They dribble short ends off.
- 2:09:29The crowd coming to its feet now on a third and sixth situation.
- 2:09:33Brown gives off the call.
- 2:09:35Three, four, five, six, seven, ten, four.
- 2:09:39Pop-down Michigan!
- 2:09:45They're mounting Garvey Cross.
- 2:09:47They are killing Garvey Cross.
- 2:09:51He broke over the middle on a cross.
- 2:09:53He was hit by two to three box players in the fifth game and the tenth.
- 2:09:58They put one out into the five and he simply pulled him right into the end zone.
- 2:10:04And we just got through talking about Garvey Cross, the junior from box player New Jersey.
- 2:10:10And on a big third down play, he simply rips off 25 yards for the touchdown.
- 2:10:16Michigan leads 27 to 14.
- 2:10:19Now Jim Killian will be attempting the extra points.
- 2:10:24It is good.
- 2:10:28And as the team come back up the field to score Michigan 28, Michigan State 14.
- 2:10:34It's going to be a delicious little ball.
- 2:10:56That drive of Michigan covers 85 yards in nine plays with Fogg taking it in from 25 yards out.
- 2:11:10And the Michigan crowd, which has not seen a Wolverine victory over Michigan State here in Ann Arbor since 1955, are on their feet.
- 2:11:22There's the kickoff. Field it at the five, back to the ten, to the 15, to the 20, to the 25.
- 2:11:28Straight up the field to the 30 comes Tommy Long.
- 2:11:32But he is hit by Frank Titus who kicked off for Michigan.
- 2:11:37And Eric Federico to the Spartans now in a desperation situation.
- 2:11:4528 to 14 with just 2.05 to go. Half the ball, first and ten. Just over, now on 30.
- 2:11:52Don Heisman has gone out of there.
- 2:11:54And Tommy Long comes in at the tailback.
- 2:11:56And we may now see Bill Ferocca going to the air.
- 2:12:02Although he has thrown only 13, he's just about got to put it in the air now.
- 2:12:05He scrambles around. Now he's going to run with the ball to the 30, to the 35.
- 2:12:10And it's knocked down at the 39 yard line.
- 2:12:14On a bruising, necktie tackle by Bill Seymour.
- 2:12:19The clock running with less than two minutes to go.
- 2:12:23And Michigan State has only one timeout left.
- 2:12:26That's important to remember as they have had to take a couple because of injuries here in the second half.
- 2:12:34A minute and a half to go as Al Brighter comes in and Gordon Bodeaux checks out.
- 2:12:42And here's Al Bracco, the senior quarterback from Erwin, Pennsylvania, who has played a magnificent game here this afternoon.
- 2:12:48Back to pass he goes. Fires a looping, and a second by Seymour at the 47 to state.
- 2:12:55And that puts the icing on the cake.
- 2:12:59Dick Krulinski, the intended receiver, made the tackle immediately, but there is a flag on that last play.
- 2:13:05So let's hold off here now.
- 2:13:07Lipping is Tom Goss as he comes back upfield.
- 2:13:13Now wait a minute, it could be against Michigan, which would nullify that pass interception.
- 2:13:20A personal foul penalty against Michigan, roughing the passer, will nullify the interception,
- 2:13:27and will give Michigan State a first down at the Michigan 46.
- 2:13:36Tom Goss limping off the field now.
- 2:13:43His place has been taken by Ed Woolley.
- 2:13:54The ball resting, just shy of the Michigan 45.
- 2:13:58A minute and 18 seconds to go, Michigan leading 28 to 14.
- 2:14:05Morocco.
- 2:14:07Back to pass. No, it is Bill Triplett in a quarterback now,
- 2:14:10scrambling around, going to run with the football to the 40s and the 35s,
- 2:14:13and is dropped at the 33-yard line by Ed Moore and Phil Seymour.
- 2:14:19Bill Triplett, a sophomore from Vicksburg, Mississippi.
- 2:14:24Running with that football, the Michigan State now has called for a timeout to stop the clock,
- 2:14:28so there's a timeout on the field, and a score of Michigan 28, Michigan State 14.
- 2:14:38Triplett is known for his running ability, and Duffy Doherty hoping that he would be able,
- 2:14:46perhaps, to be kept on the long by to find running room and weaken in the end zone itself.
- 2:14:56If not, they were leading in this ball game by 30 points.
- 2:15:00Phil would not gamble on Michigan State.
- 2:15:03He's got Tom Goss and Henry Hill right back in there,
- 2:15:06his first string defense here with about just over a minute to play in the ball game.
- 2:15:12You never know what's going to happen.
- 2:15:13You play it right down to the wire in this type of a ball game.
- 2:15:22I can tell you one thing, not very much of this 102,000-odd crowd have left.
- 2:15:37There we go, first and 10th for the Spartan.
- 2:15:39Triplett running around in the backfield.
- 2:15:41He doubles the ball, and let's see who's got it.
- 2:15:43It's back at the 43, Michigan has recovered.
- 2:15:51Well, it was either Jim Willeit or Ed Moore on that football.
- 2:15:55I don't know who will be given credit, but Michigan has taken over the football
- 2:16:00with less than a minute to go.
- 2:16:02They lead 28 to 14, and Michigan now, I believe, is coming in with their second unit.
- 2:16:08Don Moorehead, Warren Sipp, Jim Betts, and Lance Shuffler in the backfield for Michigan.
- 2:16:18As Bob Elliott handing things over to his second unit, as on a straight ahead dive player
- 2:16:25goes Dan Moorehead, Don Moorehead, I'm sorry, to the 45-yard line, 46.
- 2:16:36The clock shows 40 seconds to go.
- 2:16:40Second and five to go.
- 2:16:47And now the Michigan crowd coming to its feet and starting to applaud as again,
- 2:16:51Moorehead just holds onto Moorehead and slides up to the 50.
- 2:16:55Let's quickly pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 2:16:58This is the University of Michigan Broadcasting Service.
- 2:17:08The crowd starts to call off the time here with five seconds to go.
- 2:17:11Four, three, two, one, that's the ballgame.
- 2:17:17And the University of Michigan has come up with a 28 to 14 victory over
- 2:17:22Arch-Riddle Michigan State.
- 2:17:24And the Michigan team leading the field, surrounded by delirious fans here who have
- 2:17:32swarmed out of the stadium as they go to the far tunnel on the other side.
- 2:17:37And it is a happy, happy Wolverine crew and Coach Bob Elliott who shakes hands
- 2:17:43with Duffy Daugherty at midfield and walks off.
