- 0:25Hello and welcome to Talking Facts.
- 0:27What you need to know about family food finance and fitness.
- 0:30I am your host,
- 0:31Mindy mccully Extension Specialist for instructional support with Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:38My guest today is Doctor Nicole Huff,
- 0:41assistant extension professor for family finance and resource management.
- 0:45Welcome Nicole.
- 0:46Hi,
- 0:46Mindy.
- 0:48So today our topic is hosting holiday meals on a budget and I love this topic.
- 0:54First of all,
- 0:54because I like holiday meals and second of all because I like to save money.
- 0:59So I hope that this is a topic that our listeners will enjoy as well.
- 1:05And I should mention that it is also the topic that you are featuring in November's Moneywise newsletter.
- 1:13So we will link that at the end of our show notes and our listeners can go back and get more information if there's something that they want to learn more about that we talk about today.
- 1:23All right.
- 1:23Sounds good.
- 1:24So let's just kick this off with holidays.
- 1:30They're here.
- 1:30I can't believe it.
- 1:32It's 2022.
- 1:34It seems like it was just 2021.
- 1:36How did we get here?
- 1:38I'm not sure,
- 1:39but the holiday season is definitely just right around the corner.
- 1:43Um,
- 1:43and I am like you,
- 1:44I like to uh eat and I like to host and I love the holidays.
- 1:48Um but I also um my wallet is feeling the pinch of just inflation and how everything is going up the cost of goods and services.
- 1:59And so I'd imagine that those rising prices of groceries are probably on the minds of many Kentuckians as well.
- 2:07Um Especially if they are tasked with hosting those holiday gatherings.
- 2:12And so I have a few tips that I hope that our listeners can,
- 2:16you know,
- 2:16put into practice uh to save a little money if they're hosting.
- 2:21And the first is to plan ahead.
- 2:25I know it sounds like a,
- 2:26I know it sounds like a common sense thing,
- 2:30but so many times we don't,
- 2:31we go to the grocery store and then we make our list.
- 2:35And so when we,
- 2:36when we do that,
- 2:37we can't see,
- 2:38you know,
- 2:39what is in our pantries?
- 2:40Do we already have something in our freezer that we can use?
- 2:43Do we already have this seasoning or this spice um or something?
- 2:47In our,
- 2:48our freezer spice cabinet or pantry.
- 2:50And so when we make a list ahead of time of those recipes that we want to make.
- 2:55The list of ingredients we need.
- 2:57We can shop our home first and then when we go to the grocery store or we place an online order,
- 3:03we are prepared with just what we need and,
- 3:06and the more we can plan ahead,
- 3:08the more we can take advantage of those sales and comparison shop.
- 3:13Oh,
- 3:13I love that tip because that is where we spend a lot of money.
- 3:17That spice cabinet can be very expensive.
- 3:21So one of my favorite tips is to hit the discount store for those,
- 3:26those spices because you can really save a lot of dollars.
- 3:30Now,
- 3:31our nutrition friends might say check the date and I,
- 3:34and I definitely agree with that because spices aren't forever items,
- 3:41right?
- 3:41They do go bad or not.
- 3:43They don't go bad but they lose their potency.
- 3:45So do check the,
- 3:47the ex expiration date,
- 3:48but you can definitely save some money if you look at the discount stores for um uh of your spices because they will jack up that,
- 3:57that bill very quickly.
- 3:59So let's talk about some other shopping strategies.
- 4:01What should a host?
- 4:02Keep in mind when shopping for um their holiday meals and gatherings.
- 4:07Yeah.
- 4:07Well,
- 4:08I think you,
- 4:08you started with this tip for discount stores.
- 4:12And so part of that is just shopping intentionally.
- 4:14Right.
- 4:15Is this something that we only need once a year?
- 4:18And again,
- 4:19do is it still good from the last time we bought it or we,
- 4:22that's how we wind up with,
- 4:23you know,
- 4:2314 jars of pumpkin past spice in our,
- 4:25in our cabinet.
- 4:26And so when we,
- 4:27when we plan ahead,
- 4:29we can also shop intentionally.
- 4:31So that gives us time to look at store mailers or websites um and use mobile apps and,
- 4:38and even social media pages.
- 4:39Um Many times if you follow your favorite stores,
- 4:42um you know,
- 4:43I always encourage people if you know the two or three stores in your area that you shop.
- 4:48And so make sure you're subscribed to their loyalty programs that you are reading their mailers and then you take advantage of technology.
- 4:56And so when we shop online,
- 4:59if we place a pickup order,
- 5:00it'll allow us to control our costs because we can see what that tally is much easier than if we're in the store.
- 5:07And so we can comparison shop for ingredients.
- 5:11If you know,
- 5:12if that's important to us sales,
- 5:14we can look at at cost and really take advantage of the deals.
- 5:20And so,
- 5:21but the same thing goes,
- 5:22you know,
- 5:22and,
- 5:23and shopping online can also help us avoid those impulse by throwing things into,
- 5:27into our cab into our carts.
- 5:30But if you are shopping in the store,
- 5:31I would encourage you to do the same thing.
- 5:33Take your time don't go in your rush so that you can,
- 5:37you know,
- 5:37whether it's with a calculator or just a,
- 5:39a running tally on a notepad,
- 5:42um,
- 5:42or if you bring in a calculator and you mean business,
- 5:44right?
- 5:45Or if you use the calculator on your phone,
- 5:47but pay attention to the price of the items you're putting in your cart shop wisely and then keep up with your running total,
- 5:54you know,
- 5:54but always,
- 5:55um with shopping intentionally,
- 5:57it is taking advantage of discount stores.
- 6:00Um It may mean that you get some of your ingredients,
- 6:02one place and other ingredients another.
- 6:05But uh if you are strategic with your errand running,
- 6:09so you're not wasting gas running all over town,
- 6:12but that you are intentional,
- 6:13you know what you can save,
- 6:14you know,
- 6:15what items you need and you know,
- 6:16where is the best uh deal uh to get those?
- 6:19And my tip is to shop alone.
- 6:21Yes,
- 6:21because other members of my family tend to add to my cart without my knowledge.
- 6:27Absolutely.
- 6:27I have three.
- 6:28And if I take any one of them to the grocery store,
- 6:31I wind up with all kinds of things.
- 6:33Not in my budget or on my grocery list.
- 6:35I understand.
- 6:36I know um that I like to spread the wealth,
- 6:39as I say,
- 6:40or share the tasks,
- 6:42putting together a meal and spread the cost as well.
- 6:47Uh hosting potluck.
- 6:49So,
- 6:49is this a good way to save a little bit of money in the holidays.
- 6:54Yeah,
- 6:54it can be.
- 6:55Especially,
- 6:55you know,
- 6:55Pollocks kind of went by the wayside a little during COVID.
- 6:59And so,
- 6:59you know,
- 6:59if you are hosting your friends and family and these are people that you interact with and,
- 7:04and that is,
- 7:05um,
- 7:05safety.
- 7:06Of course,
- 7:06we always want to be safe when we're preparing dishes.
- 7:08And,
- 7:09um,
- 7:09and I'll let our food safety,
- 7:10people speak to that.
- 7:12Um,
- 7:12but,
- 7:12but if you're hosting friends and family in your home,
- 7:14delegating dishes can absolutely be a,
- 7:17a good way to keep costs down.
- 7:20And so,
- 7:21you know,
- 7:21even,
- 7:22um,
- 7:22you know,
- 7:22if it's not just the food,
- 7:24if you delegate someone to bring the ice or the plates or the,
- 7:28the napkins,
- 7:29um,
- 7:30the,
- 7:30the drinks or the sides.
- 7:32So if you ask everyone to sign up to bring something,
- 7:35then it shares that responsibility,
- 7:38which can reduce your stress.
- 7:39It will also help reduce your cost.
- 7:42Um,
- 7:42and then,
- 7:43you know,
- 7:43in that,
- 7:44look for ways that you can just simplify the sides because while the food is important and we all want a tasty meal,
- 7:52you know,
- 7:52most people would agree that it's that,
- 7:54that fellowship,
- 7:55that the laughter,
- 7:56the time,
- 7:57the memories that are most important.
- 7:59Those are the priceless things.
- 8:01And so you can save money by not doing,
- 8:03for example,
- 8:04a green bean casserole,
- 8:05just do some green beans,
- 8:06right?
- 8:06It'll save us calories and cash.
- 8:08So look for ways to simplify your sides and then you delegate those dishes to save you some,
- 8:13some money.
- 8:13And some time when I'm delegating,
- 8:15I like to encourage people to bring their own,
- 8:17take home containers so that I don't have to try to figure out how to get my items back.
- 8:23Um,
- 8:23and they don't have to remember what comes back to my house.
- 8:26So that's one of my smartest tips that I learned a long time ago from my mom.
- 8:32So as we wrap up today,
- 8:33what's a last money saving tip that you can offer our listeners?
- 8:37Yeah,
- 8:37it,
- 8:38you know,
- 8:38we have over um the pandemic,
- 8:41we had to learn how to be creative.
- 8:43So we had to put these uh twist on our traditional celebrations and I would encourage you to continue looking for ways to do that.
- 8:50You know,
- 8:50there is no rule that says you have to serve turkey on Thanksgiving.
- 8:54So think about creative alternatives that could maybe become your new tradition.
- 8:59And so choose your meals and your meats and,
- 9:02and your themes based on what fits the needs and preferences of you and your family and your guests um what fits into your budget and also not just being creative with meals,
- 9:16but also with the times that we meet.
- 9:19And so,
- 9:20you know,
- 9:20if you host your holiday meal earlier in the day,
- 9:23for example,
- 9:24many breakfast and brunch uh items are,
- 9:26it's just cheaper to make.
- 9:28And so they can be a new tradition that you could do nothing.
- 9:31So you have to serve a,
- 9:33a five course dinner.
- 9:34Um Yeah,
- 9:35and so if we meet earlier in the day,
- 9:37it gives us more time to gather together to make some memories,
- 9:41you know,
- 9:41maybe that friendly game of football out of the yard or,
- 9:44or,
- 9:44or card games in the house.
- 9:46And so there's other low cost ways,
- 9:48but it'll also help cut down the cost of our meals.
- 9:51I love all of these ideas.
- 9:52And as we said,
- 9:53at the beginning,
- 9:54we will link the money wise newsletter in the show notes.
- 9:58And you've also suggested that we link plated up recipes in our show notes as well.
- 10:03If people need ideas for new twists on their favorite holiday traditions,
- 10:09uh We can give some ideas for different recipes there as well.
- 10:12Thank you,
- 10:13Nicole for joining me today.
- 10:14I think this will be a fun new twist for holiday traditions.
- 10:19Thank you for having me,
