- 0:05I'm Miller Condon, welcome back. Hour number two, Iowa Sports
- 0:09Radio Network, Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you until 2:00.
- 0:13Bad news if you're hoping to hear David Kaplan.
- 0:16We were hoping to speak with David Kaplan.
- 0:18He just got pulled into a meeting.
- 0:22I guess there's some changes afoot at ESPN 1000.
- 0:25I did see a tweet earlier this morning some of their show hours
- 0:29are changing over in Chicago with Cappy Station.
- 0:32He's still going to be a part of it.
- 0:33So he's still going to do mornings, but I think he's now 6
- 0:36to 9, but just got in, got pulled into an all staff
- 0:39meeting. So we'd like to postpone and
- 0:42join us tomorrow. So that's fine with us.
- 0:44We'll get the Kappy prior to the finale of the Brewers 5 game
- 0:49series. That's an afternoon tilt
- 0:51tomorrow coming up here at 1:20. So one thing that I had for
- 0:56Kappy was with Kyle Tucker sitting out yesterday.
- 0:59Yep. And apparently today.
- 1:01Yes, if you're doing this, why don't you just put him on the
- 1:05IL? You can put him on the 10 day
- 1:08IL, you can get some relief and possibly bring somebody up
- 1:12'cause they didn't play him yesterday.
- 1:14Nope. They didn't pitch him.
- 1:16Nope. Completely gave him a day off.
- 1:18Yep, and this is likely what it's going to be going forward.
- 1:22If you're gonna do this, doesn't it make more sense just to put
- 1:25him on the? IL bring up by esteros right one
- 1:28of the Cantara down that's down here that's tearing the cover
- 1:32off the ball or or a relief pitcher.
- 1:35He is hitting 189. He's awful, Trent.
- 1:39His OPS is 560. That is worse than a Rafael
- 1:45Belliard. This is.
- 1:46This would dominate that number. I know.
- 1:48Has he forgotten this is his walk here?
- 1:51Right. The amount of money that he's
- 1:52cost him, my God, we're talking about 1/2 billion dollars for
- 1:55him. You see time after time after
- 1:58time, guys in their last year of their contract just go out of
- 2:01their minds, but in a positive fashion.
- 2:03That hasn't been the case with now.
- 2:04He got off to a great start, He got off to a great start.
- 2:07He's still an adventure and right field to me.
- 2:09He takes some of the worst paths to get the balls.
- 2:12I just keep one of these times he's going to miss one I but he
- 2:16they. I think I think council who I'm
- 2:19not a big fan of. I wish David Ross was still
- 2:22there. I, I, I, I, I think he's doing
- 2:25the right thing by putting him on the bench.
- 2:26I really do. Because he's just lost at the
- 2:28plate right now and he's frustrated.
- 2:30Maybe a couple of days. Watch it or maybe take 10 days
- 2:33off as you've suggested. Bring somebody up, let him, you
- 2:36know, let him sit and Stew and marinate for another one.
- 2:38Because let's be honest, if this team is going to go anywhere and
- 2:41has aspirations of making a run in October, Kyle Tucker has to
- 2:45be. Kyle Tucker say he just has to
- 2:47be. And if he's not, I don't he's.
- 2:51That. Good of a player, but right now
- 2:53he's just in one of these historically bad spots and he
- 2:58needs the time off. This is an intriguing one.
- 3:00Tonight you have Mizarowski against Colin Ray against Colin
- 3:04Ray. Who's been way better than
- 3:06anybody? Thought yes, but give him
- 3:08credit. Inconsistent.
- 3:09You don't know. Sure, but you're going to get 5
- 3:11or 6 most days on here. With Mizarowski, who was awful.
- 3:16Brutal. Yep, in his comebacker.
- 3:18Against Cincinnati and now if you get this one, all of a
- 3:24sudden does it start to tighten up a little bit?
- 3:27You still got to win both these next two, right?
- 3:29And that's. Then that you would have made-up
- 3:31three games in the standings. You're you're entering play
- 3:35today 7UP. If you get the next two you'd be
- 3:375 up. As as these teams will go their
- 3:39separate race for the remainder of the regular season, they
- 3:42don't play each other again. So here are the odds to win the
- 3:45division currently from Baseball Prospectus. 86% chance for
- 3:52Milwaukee, 13 1/2 percent chance for the Cubs.
- 3:56But to win those next two, well, maybe we'll have that
- 3:58conversation on Friday. Let's hope we have that
- 4:00conversation. What do you think it would drop
- 4:01to 65? No, not that low.
- 4:05No, it's still, I would stay more like 7822, something like
- 4:10that. Yeah, it's not going to improve
- 4:12that much. Still five games back with how
- 4:14many to play still incredibly difficult for that.
- 4:17So we're inside 40 games, right? Yeah, doing a little bit of
- 4:21math. Yes, 35, about 35 games left in
- 4:26the regular season, somewhere around there.
- 4:28Going to be tough. Team split about 125.
- 4:30That's about the range right now.
- 4:32So going to be going to be tough for him to catch him.
- 4:34So a little, a little more than 40 left.
- 4:37Likewise in the American League East, can the Yankees catch
- 4:40Toronto? I don't think so they're.
- 4:41Five up, but the Jays had There's actually 6 up because
- 4:44Toronto has the tiebreaker. Oh, they do.
- 4:46They do. They've got the tiebreaker,
- 4:48they've got a three-game series left, but I don't think it
- 4:50matters because they've already got the season, Series 1.
- 4:52The Yankees are mashing nine home runs last night.
- 4:55You think they're gonna be able to do that?
- 4:57And obviously Judge coming back and what they're going to be
- 4:59able to do offensively, it just comes down to the staff.
- 5:03Freed has not been great recently.
- 5:06Rodon, he's an adventurer. And then after that, like, like
- 5:11there's some upside with some of those young guys like Schlitter,
- 5:14right? Yep.
- 5:15You can see it. But it's so inconsistent at this
- 5:19point. No, I'm with you.
- 5:20I want to go back to something. Then let's let's switch gears
- 5:23entirely. Let's talk about the Hawkeyes in
- 5:24football and, and you've and, and some of our voices that help
- 5:30us out been kind of tiptoeing around this topic a little.
- 5:33Bit OK. When it comes to the quarterback
- 5:36position, yeah, who apparently was named the starting
- 5:39quarterback yesterday. Right.
- 5:41I like Pete Nakos too, but come on, like.
- 5:44This was ever a question, yes. Breaking.
- 5:46News I was expected to name, but but regardless of that, what's
- 5:54this, what's this fall camp been like?
- 5:56Has it been, has it met expectations?
- 5:58Were they realistic to begin with or is there concern at the
- 6:02quarterback position at the University of Iowa?
- 6:04And maybe a part and parcel is based on recent memory.
- 6:09I think. Is that is the McNamara bad
- 6:11taste still in some people's mouths?
- 6:13There's a lot of that. So I think there's a lot of kind
- 6:16of layers to this and it's a very detailed kind of thing that
- 6:19you laid out 'cause you brought up a couple of different things
- 6:21and I think they're all play into it.
- 6:23A number one at the beginning camp.
- 6:25When camp started, I heard right away he's rusty and it's the old
- 6:30ad had shaken off the rust, but it was apparent.
- 6:34But we heard a lot of positive June, July.
- 6:36Absolute camps because he's a Ference guy.
- 6:40He's not. He's not Kate McNamara, who was
- 6:44different, a different kind of leader.
- 6:46Not the kind of leader that wasn't the leader, no.
- 6:48And we saw what kind of leader he was.
- 6:50He's the guy that quit on his team, right?
- 6:52But the background of Mark Ronowski just as a dude, right?
- 6:56He's Kurt Francis, kind of, yeah.
- 6:58He's the kind of kid that he absolutely loves to have as his
- 7:02quarterback. That's what I think definitely
- 7:04put him up there. But when he came back, it was
- 7:07rough and I heard things were ironed out.
- 7:10But then you go to the spring practice or the open practice,
- 7:13Kids Day, really good early on and then struggles.
- 7:17Then when they had their scrimmage last Saturday, some
- 7:20shaky moments again. Heard that as well.
- 7:23I think it is a part where maybe our expectations because we
- 7:27heard so many good things and it was never about him physically,
- 7:29right? It was always leadership kind of
- 7:32things, those kind of things, how he's acclimating himself.
- 7:35We got the leadership council that came out the other day.
- 7:37He was already on that, one of the 15 players that were named
- 7:40to that. It was that part him as a
- 7:42passer, those numbers took a step back last year.
- 7:45He has never been the most accurate passer.
- 7:49What separates him is his running ability is I will
- 7:52willing to do that with him because to unlock all what Mark
- 7:56Radowski is. He has to run.
- 7:58He has to run the football. Yeah, I think you have to.
- 8:00And and you know, one of the reasons I think you're more
- 8:03comfortable with him doing that is I believe, I believe because
- 8:09we've seen him play a little bit in the SEC that you have a
- 8:12competent guy behind him should there be an injury to your
- 8:15starting. Quarterback.
- 8:17'Cause everything you hear is they absolutely are in love with
- 8:19Hank Brown, which is, which is a positive on a couple of fronts.
- 8:23I think is big of a positive is he's there for this year should
- 8:26he be needed. But then when when it comes time
- 8:30to replenishing your roster after this year, you no longer
- 8:33have to shop in the quarterback aisle.
- 8:35Maybe right where they've had to spend a lot of time as of late.
- 8:39But I'm starting to I, I guess I didn't expect to to hear any
- 8:45missteps or any, any you know, but but but in, in fall camp
- 8:52when it comes to the when it comes to the starting
- 8:54quarterback. And I've been surprised by that
- 8:56too. I I'm right there with you
- 8:57because I thought it wasn't going to be perfect.
- 9:00However, there's been a lot more of those kind of rumblings that
- 9:04have been out there and it's been starting to seep through.
- 9:08Does it change our expectation level of what this passing game
- 9:12is going to be? I think so.
- 9:13A little bit for me and maybe look, when we do this every day,
- 9:19when you talk about a team every day like we do play the hits,
- 9:22right, you start to build them up in a certain way.
- 9:27And I think with Mark Gronowski I did that.
- 9:29If we see the physical runner, if we see the things, those
- 9:32intangible things, yeah, he can get there.
- 9:34But the passing game maybe still not going to be completely
- 9:37unlocked this season. What's the.
- 9:39Perfect week one for him against Albany.
- 9:44High completion percentage and. No missteps 12 of 15.
- 9:47Yeah, 200 yards, couple of touchdowns.
- 9:50Yeah. Runs for 35 maybe?
- 9:52Yep, and is out of there in the middle.
- 9:53Of third quarter, that's a perfect, that's a perfect debut.
- 9:55They race out to what's. A realistic debut. 8 of 14106
- 10:01yards. One touchdown 1.
- 10:02Interception and a lot of angst leading in.
- 10:06Two Seihawks, yes. It'll be somewhere in the middle
- 10:08of that. Probably so.
- 10:10Now, remember two years ago when Kate McNamara thrust onto the
- 10:13scene? Hell, last year, last year
- 10:16against Illinois State, he was great.
- 10:18It looked like, all right, he's healthy.
- 10:20Yep, he's figured it out. Draw.
- 10:22A line through that last year, This is this is a different guy.
- 10:24Yeah, No, he wasn't. That wasn't the case.
- 10:28We'll overreact because that's what we do.
- 10:31What thing do we know how bad Albany's gonna be?
- 10:35No, I haven't even looked. At you know it.
- 10:37I I just can't bring. I haven't even looked at them.
- 10:39We've talked about how difficult it is just in general for the
- 10:42college football that we talk about.
- 10:44Is there a point spread put out for that game yet?
- 10:4637 1/2. Jesus, yeah.
- 10:49Iowa favored by 37 1/2 against anybody.
- 10:51I think that says a lot about the Great Danes if I was favored
- 10:55by that much in the opener. How many times in the last
- 10:58couple of years have they scored 37 1/2 it?
- 11:02Was better. Last year, high watermark, they
- 11:04scored forty against Washington Northwestern and they put 42 on
- 11:08Wisconsin. That that blows me away they
- 11:10did. So they did surpass that number
- 11:12three times last year and including three or four games.
- 11:15The only one they did was that lost at Spartyville when they
- 11:19got picked off by Michigan State.
- 11:22But to be favored by that, Oh, they did Illinois State too.
- 11:25They put up 40 even against Illinois State.
- 11:28That was different. That was much different.
- 11:32That's when we saw Vanderzee for the first.
- 11:34Oh yeah, 2 touchdowns in that game he was.
- 11:35Unbelievable in that game. And they raced out the second,
- 11:38first half against Iowa State and like, look at this offense.
- 11:42And then McNamara threw that pick back across the field.
- 11:45And then Jalen Noel was wide open behind the coverage.
- 11:48And it was a different game and really a different season after
- 11:51that. Fair should have tried to kick
- 11:53field goal at the end of the game, by the way.
- 11:56Got in field goal range and and and and tried to kick field goal
- 11:59against Iowa State. McNamara couldn't get.
- 12:01It he couldn't throw it to the. End zone.
- 12:02He couldn't get it to the end zone from the 50 right?
- 12:05Try try the field goal. And he couldn't do it.
- 12:09The other big question for Iowa football?
- 12:13You know, I was talking with this earlier today with one of
- 12:15my friends, TJ Hall. We've heard nothing but great
- 12:19things, right? Yep.
- 12:21But until we see it, I mean, don't we need some kind of proof
- 12:23of concept? And then still Deshaun Lee was
- 12:28saving me in every video is getting beat by Vanderzee and
- 12:31every video that I will football.
- 12:33That's good and bad. Right.
- 12:34He could play both sides of that one.
- 12:37They bring in barrels from South Dakota.
- 12:39Did you hear much about him at the open practice?
- 12:41He didn't. Kind of.
- 12:43No, still getting acclimated. About Shire.
- 12:46Yes, that quarterback spot last year, Iowa for their standards.
- 12:51Was way bad. It was.
- 12:52They stunk from the standard that Phil Parker has built.
- 12:55They were bad. It's not fair because they're
- 12:57still a top 20. Defense.
- 12:58Yeah, because Riley Moss isn't there and Cooper to Jean's not
- 13:00there. But they've been able to plug
- 13:02and play, and that was not the case a year ago.
- 13:05And now you're going with TJ Hall, who, and he's been toast a
- 13:08lot of times in his career, and he's your number one.
- 13:11And Sean Lee is not real big. And Rashid Barrows come in from
- 13:14South Dakota and he hasn't separated himself.
- 13:17If all of a sudden we go back to the same tried and true.
- 13:19Because this year you have a linebacker group that's new.
- 13:23You got quarterbacks that have question marks.
- 13:25Xavier Wampa, Can you believe what we're hearing that well?
- 13:29I want to, but we haven't seen it yet.
- 13:31But we also know the kid 'cause he's a local kid, We've watched
- 13:34him grow up. He was a stud at the high school
- 13:36level. But all those stars beside his
- 13:38name for a reason. But it hasn't happened.
- 13:41And suddenly in his schedule that now has Iowa State with
- 13:45Rocco Beck and Indiana with Mendoza and Oregon and Penn
- 13:49State an hour and teams that are going to be able to throw the
- 13:52football. Yeah, and Rayola is Iowa.
- 13:55Going to be in a spot where they're going to have to win
- 13:57some games 3430. So are you leading in the in the
- 14:01first hour of the program you made a 10 and two case for Iowa
- 14:03State. I don't think you believe that,
- 14:05but you said you could make. That I can make the.
- 14:07Case you could get them there. I think that's how you phrased
- 14:09it. Can you get Iowa to six and six?
- 14:12I mean, can you have them fall to six and six?
- 14:14No doubt. Could you have them fall to 5:00
- 14:15and 7:00? Don't think so.
- 14:19I don't think so. Lost at Iowa State.
- 14:22That would go a long way to 5:00 and 7:00, or certainly in that
- 14:25direction. Yep.
- 14:26The stretch, I think they go to Rutgers I.
- 14:28Farence. See, I think that's a tougher
- 14:30spot than you, than you get credit for.
- 14:32It's just because Farence has been so good on Fridays, he has
- 14:35not just the Nebraska game, but just in general that the way he
- 14:39has it set up, well, he understands what they do.
- 14:43But Indiana, Wisconsin, they're not winning both those games.
- 14:45No, yeah, they're going to be Wisconsin.
- 14:51On the road at Camp Randall. Yes.
- 14:52I just just, I think they're awful.
- 14:55How do you how is Wisconsin awful?
- 14:57The schedule's difficult. That's that's.
- 14:59Part that's maybe the reason #1. All right, who did?
- 15:05The Who did the Rutgers play? I should remember this.
- 15:07Who did they play in their bowl game last year?
- 15:10I don't remember. We should remember this.
- 15:12It was a Big 12 team. Oh.
- 15:14Really. IA bowl game?
- 15:19Well, it was. Was it the pinstripe?
- 15:20I think it was. It was K state.
- 15:23It was K State 40. 4:40. One, yeah, you're right.
- 15:26It was K It was K state. And Calic.
- 15:32Manus. How did he do?
- 15:34He went 14 of 32 for 237. He's back.
- 15:41He's not good. How did they stay in this Game
- 15:44Boy? I'm just looking at the box
- 15:45score. Jeffrey Johnson 3 touchdown
- 15:48passes Dylan Edwards averaged over. 7 yards a carry last year.
- 15:54He's good. He's really good.
- 15:56That's another reason I like K State this weekend.
- 15:58Need an offensive line to block. Them Well, you do, but but Iowa
- 16:01State needs the defensive front to tackle.
- 16:03Them back to Iowa, trying to find 6 losses on the schedule.
- 16:07I think you can get there all right.
- 16:08So we got 2 even through that stretch, which is their easiest
- 16:11stretch of the year, the front half of the year.
- 16:13So you got to find a way. Could they lose four more of
- 16:15these games? Penn State 1 Minnesota No Peter
- 16:19Mckinnick last time they were there.
- 16:22No. Oregon 2 USC on the road. 3.
- 16:26Michigan State, Nope. At Nebraska, Ding, Ding, Ding,
- 16:29that's four. That's four.
- 16:31That's six losses without really stretching in a big time way.
- 16:35Boy the. Vegas has got their number right
- 16:37on, isn't it? It should be 7 and five.
- 16:39I think Iowa State should be 7 and five.
- 16:41They're both 7:00 and 5:00, which is where they're listed.
- 16:47USC, Oregon, Penn State, Nebraska.
- 16:53How many of the how many of the Rutgers, Indiana, Wisconsin you
- 16:55got to lose to Iowa State? That's 5.
- 16:58And then one of those 3. And then one of those three at
- 17:00Rutgers on a Friday home against Indiana, who a lot of people
- 17:05don't think is going to take that big of a step back.
- 17:07I do maybe, ma'am. I I don't think they're a
- 17:10playoff team. I think they're going to be OK.
- 17:12Eight and four there. That's where I am with India.
- 17:14Yes, they're still going to be, which for Indiana football, I
- 17:17mean, that's one of the high watermarks of that football
- 17:19program. Wisconsin's schedule.
- 17:22Is it daunting? Week 3 Alabama, Week 4 Maryland,
- 17:26all right. And then week 5 Michigan, then
- 17:29Iowa. How about this?
- 17:30How about this for how about this?
- 17:32How about this? Where's the breather?
- 17:35Let me just run through this. I know that there's a buy in
- 17:38here. Michigan.
- 17:40Uh huh. At Michigan, home to Iowa, home
- 17:44to Ohio State at Oregon, home to Washington at Indiana, home to
- 17:49Illinois at Minnesota. Where's the breather?
- 17:53Well, that's a win. Where's the well, there's a win.
- 17:55There isn't. There isn't.
- 17:56No, they're going to be bad. What's their total?
- 17:59Is it 5-5 and 1/2? 5 1/2 Yeah, there's no.
- 18:01Way they're winning 5 1/2, there's no way they're winning
- 18:03six games to lose that bet. No way.
- 18:06Jeff Grimes comes in. Jeff Grimes has done great work
- 18:10as an offensive play caller. What he did at Kansas.
- 18:13You were impressed by The Jayhawks a couple of years ago
- 18:16and Jeff Grimes was a reason for that.
- 18:18What also unleashes the Jeff Grimes offense?
- 18:21It's not Billy Edwards, the Maryland transfer quarterback.
- 18:24It's a quarterback that can run. What is Billy Edwards greatest
- 18:27strength? I'm not sure he has one.
- 18:29Well, he ran for seven touchdowns 2 years ago in a part
- 18:31time role, ran for five more last year in a part time role.
- 18:35He can run the football. So he.
- 18:36Can't win the Maryland job and he's going to leave Wisconsin.
- 18:39I'm not saying that Wisconsin's going to be great or even good,
- 18:42but to say that they're going to be terrible?
- 18:44I think you got him bowling. Is a stretch.
- 18:47I think they're 5:00 and 7:00, but even at 5:00 and 7:00.
- 18:50With that schedule, that's not. Bad.
- 18:52You can still be a good football team.
- 18:54That's my push back. The record's not going to
- 18:55indicate it that this is a good team.
- 18:57However, they spent heavily in the portal.
- 19:00They brought in a new left tackle.
- 19:02They're getting back to Wisconsin football, physical,
- 19:05tough up front. Question is defensively if they
- 19:08can get there because they were not that and you're going maybe
- 19:10that's the biggest one. Nobody transfers.
- 19:12They brought in though, on the defensive side of the football.
- 19:14How many? 15 Jesus.
- 19:17They went wholesale. They did.
- 19:19They invested heavily on that defense.
- 19:22A lot of fifth year guys, a lot of guys coming in for their
- 19:24final go around. We'll see if it works.
- 19:27I think they're going to be not record wise, but they're going
- 19:30to be a better team than you do. Based on the schedule is so
- 19:34difficult, it is all right. We'll take your time out.
- 19:36Come back Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 19:39Glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:06Hi, I'm Ellery Condon, 1:30 on a Wednesday still to come this
- 20:10hour. Trends, plays of the day, circus
- 20:12sports sponsor, those busy weekend at circus sign up
- 20:16weekend. Real quick on this, since we're
- 20:18talking Vegas or since I brought it up, Jimmy Vaccaro, long time
- 20:21odds maker. If you've been on sports, if
- 20:24you've been to Vegas over the years, you probably know his
- 20:27name. You know his brother, right?
- 20:28Sonny Vaccaro, who is his Nike? Did he sign Jordan?
- 20:33I think he convinced Nike to sign Jordan back in the day and
- 20:38he was involved in basketball, etcetera.
- 20:39His younger brother Jimmy, bookmaker for 50 years.
- 20:43He is credited when he became famous when he put up Buster
- 20:47Douglas at 42 to one to beat Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas
- 20:52did. And in fact, wasn't that the
- 20:55name of the 30 for 30 or whatever the they did a piece on
- 20:58Buster Douglas, one of those 30 for 30s on ESPNI think, and I
- 21:02think it was called 42 to one. Oh really?
- 21:04I think it was anyways, so he put up that price when he was
- 21:07the bookmaker at the at The Mirage.
- 21:09But he's credited with, I don't know if inventing, but first of
- 21:13the first one to ever offer wind totals.
- 21:17Wind totals first. Dude that came up with this idea
- 21:20back in the late 80s. Apparently some rich Texan
- 21:24showed up. It was Jimmy Johnson's first
- 21:27year. So what year would that have
- 21:28been? 89, yeah.
- 21:29That was Aikman straft year. Yeah, must have been.
- 21:33So he he walked up to the counter and said, you know how
- 21:35good I think Dallas is going to be Very good.
- 21:37Do you guys do anything like this?
- 21:39Can you give me a number? So he thought about it and he
- 21:42came up with five and a half and this guy reached into his
- 21:45suitcase, pulled up $38,000 and bet over 5 1/2 wins for the
- 21:51Cowboys that year. They went one and 15.
- 21:54But that's the that's this kind of just kind of how much Jimmy
- 21:59Vaccaro meant to sports wagering.
- 22:01And he's in the Hall of Fame, as he should be.
- 22:03Yes, absolutely, Circa, circa. You can see that if you go down
- 22:06and just to the right of where you place your bets, you can see
- 22:10the sports gambling Hall of Fame, which I get a kick out of
- 22:14every single time too, looking through there and the.
- 22:15Names. The names and then pull out the
- 22:18stories, Google and then talk to a few people that know him and
- 22:22oh the stories. They are definitely at a high
- 22:25level. No doubt about it.
- 22:26All right, One other thing that I've been meaning to find a way
- 22:29to get it in. Here's a perfect opportunity.
- 22:31It goes back. It's a couple of weeks old now,
- 22:33but next year's Hall of Fame when it comes to the NFL,
- 22:37there's still a couple of holdovers guys that may or may
- 22:40not get in. Luke Heekley's name keeps coming
- 22:42up. Tori Holt's name keeps coming up
- 22:44that he may or may not get in. Here's the 10, the 10 most
- 22:49likely. And I and I think there's some
- 22:50guys on that list that don't have a prayer of ever, ever
- 22:53seeing Kenton unless they buy a ticket.
- 22:56But here's the list. Tell me if you think first thing
- 22:59that pops into your mind, yay or nay Hall of Famer with these
- 23:02five. And I'm going to go with the
- 23:04easy nays, at least I think so. First, Julian Edelman.
- 23:09You think it's you think there's a decision.
- 23:11I think they ultimately may get in.
- 23:14Might have had the greatest catch in a suit where one of one
- 23:17of the greatest catches in the Super Bowl when that ball
- 23:20somehow didn't hit the ground against Atlanta in that
- 23:23comeback. I I struggle without looking at
- 23:26the numbers to think of my mind. The first thing that pops in
- 23:29Julia Edelman, Hall of Famer. I don't think he is.
- 23:33I don't think so either. The Sean McCoy.
- 23:35Nope, not long enough. Right.
- 23:37Dez Bryant? No, no.
- 23:41Todd Gurley, No, I'm with you. So those are the easy four out
- 23:44of the way, out of the way these guys have.
- 23:46I don't think they have. Edelman would be the one, but I
- 23:48don't think so. Greg Olsen.
- 23:52I don't think so. Think of that great Greg Olsen
- 23:55moment. Do you have one?
- 23:57Yeah. Well, to be fair, how many times
- 24:00did you watch the Panthers? But he's also in Chicago.
- 24:04Yeah, he's around. You're right, You're right
- 24:06there. There isn't 1.
- 24:07I don't think he gets in either. Now it gets tricky.
- 24:11Here's his numbers. I got him here. 60 touchdowns,
- 24:148600 yards, 742 receptions in 200 games.
- 24:19Compare that to Antonio Gates. Can you do that quickly?
- 24:22It's, it's, it's not close, Right.
- 24:23All right. Larry Fitzgerald.
- 24:25Yes. Didn't you?
- 24:26Didn't even flinch. No, not at all.
- 24:28I'm with you, Drew Brees. Yes, Jason Witten.
- 24:35No first thought, no. We'll never get into the
- 24:40announcer. Hall of Fame?
- 24:41No, it didn't go well. Frank Gore.
- 24:46Yes, I agree. I think the totality of the
- 24:49career mm hmm will get him there now.
- 24:52Here's one that I think is going to be maybe as fiercely debated
- 24:58as any of the guys we've brought up at this point, 'cause I'm
- 25:00with you. It's a no brainer.
- 25:02Fitzgerald, Brees, Frank Gore, those three are the others.
- 25:05No, here's the one 'cause I think he is Phillip Rivers.
- 25:12Yes. Right, you didn't.
- 25:14You didn't know? Second thought.
- 25:15I think just the totality of the career.
- 25:17No super. Bowl win?
- 25:18No even Not even an AFC champion do you?
- 25:21Think he did? No, he didn't.
- 25:23Because the last. Time.
- 25:25The only time they played for a Super Bowl.
- 25:26What was the guy's name? Stan Humphreys.
- 25:28Yes, absolutely. Phillip Rivers long career.
- 25:33A. Solid throughout.
- 25:37Good numbers. 421 touchdowns against 209 interceptions.
- 25:42A winning record as a quarterback. 65% completion
- 25:45most. Quirky release you've ever seen
- 25:47in in the position. And maybe that's a part of it.
- 25:50Don't see many guys that throw the ball like that that are
- 25:52there. And as good a trash talker as
- 25:54there wasn't in the league. And he doesn't without cussing.
- 25:57AP I'm trying to look at all pros, four time, all pro, the
- 26:03kids. Count.
- 26:04So that's all pro. That's not pro.
- 26:05Bowl. That's all Pro 10 Pro Bowls in
- 26:10his career. Yeah, I think he is.
- 26:13First ballot. Yeah, I think so too, Trent.
- 26:17Yeah, despite the fact he doesn't have the postseason
- 26:21accolades that that you want to see, I think he's a Hall of
- 26:25Famer. I loved watching him play.
- 26:27I hated watching him play. 'Cause it gets your.
- 26:29Game. Absolutely.
- 26:30But boy oh boy, I loved his game.
- 26:32I loved his toughness. Him and Jay Cutler had some back
- 26:36and forths not I mean on the field as well, but just like
- 26:40some they they did not like each other.
- 26:42Here's another thing. And here's a just rumor.
- 26:44Is it ironic that Breeze and Rivers Rivers took Breeze job in
- 26:47San Diego? Both going to go in the same
- 26:49time? Anyways, go ahead.
- 26:50So from the beginning of his career as a starter in 2006
- 26:55through the end of his career, his last year was in Indy in
- 26:592020. Sixteen games throughout the
- 27:03course of each one of those schedules he started.
- 27:07Every. Single one of those games.
- 27:10Except they've gotten a lot of heat.
- 27:12Wasn't there a playoff game? Am I thinking to the right guy?
- 27:16Wasn't it Philip Rivers that that didn't play or begged out
- 27:22of at some point, a playoff game that he took a ton of criticism
- 27:26for? Do you remember my thinking?
- 27:27To the right guy, it doesn't jump out to me.
- 27:31Let's see. Quits playoff game.
- 27:34No, I don't want to say quits, but I'm sure that, you know,
- 27:36some of the his critics would say that there was not.
- 27:42No one forever quit. And who played through a torn
- 27:45ACL in the 2008 AFC championship game.
- 27:49So he did get to a championship game in 2008.
- 27:52And did, but he didn't finish. But he had an ACL for crying out
- 27:56loud. Yeah, 2008 AFC championship
- 28:01game. All right, let's see pop pops up
- 28:03here. It might have been the 2008
- 28:05season, 2009 AFC championship game.
- 28:08No, that wasn't it either as I'm doing this on the fly and trying
- 28:11to figure. It out I think.
- 28:13Here it is. Championship game 2007.
- 28:17Oh, it was the undefeated Patriots 2112.
- 28:21The final late touchdown puts it away for the Patriots.
- 28:24It was a tight game. Kading got things started with
- 28:26the field goal, had a couple of more.
- 28:28Wes Welker from Brady salted it away 2112.
- 28:33But did anybody else play in that game?
- 28:35No quarterbacks, at least that I see at least in that.
- 28:37One, I, I might be, I might be thinking about somebody else.
- 28:41I thought it was him, but we both agree that Philip Rivers
- 28:44is, is going to hear his name called, right.
- 28:46That's a couple of weeks old nonetheless, but wanted to bring
- 28:49that up because it's going to be, there's going to be some
- 28:51very difficult decisions that are going to have to be.
- 28:54Made How many guys is it get to be back to the full freight this
- 28:57year? You can have what 9 I think is
- 28:59the Max I think. 'Cause Belichick's also
- 29:02eligible. Oh, he's in.
- 29:03He has to be. Yeah, he's in.
- 29:05I mean, he's a cinch. He's a cinch.
- 29:08Frank Gore, were you in with me with?
- 29:10Gore. Yeah, Gore's in.
- 29:12What a guy like. No, not Lamar Jackson.
- 29:15I'm not thinking of Lamar Jackson when he quit.
- 29:16No, that's not him. There was, I'm sure there was a.
- 29:21Alex Smith. No, no, no.
- 29:26Somebody took a lot of arrows for they thought he should be
- 29:29playing anyways, but. Still, that number is
- 29:31incredible. It is starting for what, 1516
- 29:34years, whatever that was, and starting every single game of
- 29:38his career. Yeah, that's definitely eye
- 29:40opening. All right, we'll take time out
- 29:41trench plays of the day. We'll get into the Major League
- 29:44schedule. We do have games that are
- 29:46underway in MLB. Philadelphia's ahead of Seattle.
- 29:50The pits. The Pirates are putting it to
- 29:53the Jays. Tigers are all over Houston.
- 29:55Boy, what has happened to this Houston ball club?
- 29:58They can't hit. They can't hit again.
- 30:00They well, that was Texas. They couldn't hit Framber got.
- 30:04Shelled again today, gave up six in the first.
- 30:08Seattle, though, is not taking advantage.
- 30:10No Texas. Texas is.
- 30:12No, they're. Not just going to get there.
- 30:15You know, I don't think I hit a futures ticket pre pre flop.
- 30:19Really going back to. 'Cause I love.
- 30:21We both do. We both loved Arizona.
- 30:23Yep. And we both thought Texas was.
- 30:24Good. You talked me into both of
- 30:25those. I'm going to blame you on both
- 30:26of those. And I think it's fair.
- 30:28I, I mean, I don't think it's unfair because I was all over
- 30:31both of those franchises. All right, Miller and Condon
- 30:33Trent's plays of the day, Circa Sports will will sponsor those.
- 30:38We'll get into tonight's slate of MLB games.
- 30:41Lights late tonight, even worse tomorrow.
- 30:43At least there are a couple of games.
- 30:46Somebody what? Are you, what are you thinking
- 30:48of Jay Cutler when he didn't show up in the NFC Championship
- 30:51Game for my Bears against the Packers?
- 30:54That's what the caller just said, you know.
- 30:55What I might have been, It might have been Jay.
- 30:57Cutler, you wonder why I hate Jay Cutler.
- 30:59Was he on the sidelines? And he It might have been Jay
- 31:02Cutler, come to think of it. Yeah, and you like that guy?
- 31:05I love the way he threw the football.
- 31:07I like his ex-wife better than him.
- 31:10We watched that stupid show. For one reason, yes.
- 31:13Well, take your time out. Miller and Condon Trent's plays
- 31:16of the day, Circus Sports, going to sponsor those.
- 31:18It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 31:27Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 31:30Final segment here on a Wednesday.
- 31:33If you miss David Kaplan, well, so did we.
- 31:35We'll get to him tomorrow. Cappy will join us.
- 31:38He had an issue come up with the ESPN 1000 where he does the
- 31:42morning show over there and he will join us tomorrow as he was
- 31:45on all hands on deck meeting called at the last second.
- 31:49So we solved the Riddle, yes, regarding the Chargers and my
- 31:54memory telling me that something happened to Philip Rivers in
- 31:56that in in that in one of the playoff games.
- 31:59And I was mistaken. It was his running back,
- 32:03Ladainian Tomlinson, who suffered A torn groin tendon
- 32:08completely off the bone against the Colts in a wild card game.
- 32:12And he couldn't answer the bell against the Steelers.
- 32:16So Rivers did play and he was hurt and got a bunch of
- 32:21accolades for doing so. And there were some that
- 32:23believed that the at a soon to be, or, you know, would come to
- 32:29be Hall of Fame running back Ladainian Tomlinson should have
- 32:32played. So you were close.
- 32:34I didn't give myself 1/2 a point.
- 32:36And Tomlinson tried to play 2 carries 5 yards.
- 32:39He did try to play. Did try to play and then was
- 32:43seen on the sideline with his helmet.
- 32:44On a bike I remember. And a little pouty.
- 32:47I think that was a component to A2.
- 32:49He looked very sad or didn't look like a great teammate.
- 32:52I think as maybe you some of were some of the negativity
- 32:55right if memory serves started to come in.
- 32:57It was kind of that component of it.
- 32:59It's one thing to try and he did not be able to go but.
- 33:03Player man held. If he was, Oh my God, so
- 33:05talented. That aside, that aside, just
- 33:09unbelievable. All right, so we figured that
- 33:11out. Our thanks to our smarter
- 33:14listeners yes, 2 hosts for figure for We need the help
- 33:17Yeah, for putting a bow on that Anyways, your plays of the day.
- 33:20So as far as the slate of games here this evening, uh huh.
- 33:25It's it's better than tomorrow's.
- 33:28Right. Because baseball during the day,
- 33:30I mean, I think there's are during the night rather there's
- 33:33maybe two or three games going on, but there's more out there
- 33:36tonight. What are you betting on today?
- 33:38I just have two games that I like.
- 33:41I'm going to grab the Cardinals plus Bunny, plus 105.
- 33:44It's Alcantra still hasn't been great for the Marlins against
- 33:48Polenta. On the other side, he.
- 33:50Was one of those guys that was absolutely, no doubt about it,
- 33:53getting traded. Right.
- 33:54Yeah, and then he doesn't. And that that's the way that one
- 33:58goes. And I'm going to say bounce back
- 34:00for the race here after yesterday's disaster.
- 34:02Give it up. 13 runs, nine home runs.
- 34:05Well, it's Rasmussen who gets the ball and he's outstanding
- 34:07against Schlitter. I just, I know he's going to be
- 34:10good. I think Schlitter's going to be.
- 34:11He's not there yet. He throws hard, but he's not a
- 34:14pitcher yet. He's not a Major League pitcher
- 34:15yet. So give me Rasmussen -114 in
- 34:19that one. Just two plays.
- 34:20Only one game in the WNBA. So did you watch Hard Knocks
- 34:23last night? I forgot all about it.
- 34:26You got to be. I forgot all about it.
- 34:28And you didn't watch the Cowboys?
- 34:31What was I? I watched the Cubs.
- 34:32Yes, same. And that game went a little bit
- 34:35later than I thought. And then I, for the second
- 34:37straight night, I don't know what it is about this series.
- 34:40I'm watching the Reds and the Angels, of all things.
- 34:42I don't know. What's wrong?
- 34:43I don't. Know I watched it Monday I
- 34:46thought I'd give it another try again last night.
- 34:49I forgot was did you see Hard Knocks?
- 34:51I didn't because I went episode 1 of the Cowboys documentary.
- 34:57And. It's fine.
- 34:59OK. It was good, I enjoyed.
- 35:01It it's on Netflix. Yep, and then episode 2 right at
- 35:05the end and it's getting late and look at the clock and I'll
- 35:08just watch the 1st 10 minutes, yeah.
- 35:10Watch the whole thing, did you? So it's good.
- 35:12It's getting good. Episode 2 was tremendous, so.
- 35:16Do I need to watch episode 1 so. If you're looking for background
- 35:19on Jerry, which I did find entertaining, there were parts
- 35:21of it. It was.
- 35:22So this is goes back to the sale then?
- 35:24Yes, him buying mm Hmm Firing Landry, bringing in Jimmy.
- 35:28Did tech sham owner or was he running?
- 35:30No, he was running. It yeah, it was another guy with
- 35:32a southern Texas name. I don't remember.
- 35:35Not no. I don't remember who owned them.
- 35:36Yeah. But talks about that a lot of
- 35:39Jerry background. But then episode 2 here comes
- 35:42Aikman and that's how it starts with Aikman in the chair.
- 35:45Yeah, the documentary style, that's.
- 35:47Good. I like Troy Aikman.
- 35:48I know you do. Yeah.
- 35:50And then I was in. And a lot of Michael Irvin.
- 35:52How? Charles Haley.
- 35:53Oh. Boy, Yeah, he.
- 35:54Was dragging him in the story of Haley how he got traded from San
- 35:58Francisco? I'm watching it.
- 36:02I'm watching it tonight. How much time do they spend on
- 36:06the Tom Landry for Jimmy Johnson?
- 36:08Landry out. I'm bringing in my own guy,
- 36:10Jimmy Johnson. Quite a bit.
- 36:12Do they? They show the newspaper article
- 36:15where they're pictured dining together at a Tex Mex
- 36:18restaurant. Jones and Landry.
- 36:20Before no Jones and Jimmy Johnson before the firing was.
- 36:25Official where they kind of forged their relationship coach,
- 36:29really. And then and then how did they
- 36:31tell Tom Landry, an icon? I mean the silhouette of the
- 36:35fedora. Sounds like just kind of fired.
- 36:37Him just fired him. Yeah, Thanks for thanks for
- 36:40coming out. Thanks for the we're.
- 36:41Moving on. It was also interesting hearing
- 36:44Michael Irvin, who was there for Landry's final year, talk about
- 36:47him. You'll be, I think, hit by what
- 36:51he says and in a. Positive way?
- 36:53No, really the. Speech that he was given.
- 36:56Michael Irvin grew up a Cowboys fan in Miami, but grew up his
- 37:02dad wore a fedora because of Tom Landry.
- 37:05And then he gets drafted by them.
- 37:07And to see that, I think you're really good.
- 37:09Enjoy the background of Episode 1's good.
- 37:12If you have the ability to watch it like 1 1/2 speed, do that.
- 37:15You can't. Watch it.
- 37:16Yeah, you can. Yeah, you can do that on
- 37:17Netflix. I know you can, but like.
- 37:19Just like a podcast. Oh yeah, you won't be able to.
- 37:22I I would say though, maybe for some of our younger demographic,
- 37:25that's the direction to go get through that first one, through
