- 0:00Speaker 1: Are we going, Yeah, quarantine. Moute has something on his brain.
- 0:06Speaker 1: That's what Daniel says. Oh, that's what Daniels says.
- 0:11Speaker 2: He's slid in her dmsler around the court.
- 0:17Speaker 3: That's what Daniel says. That's what Daniel says.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Denies it, says he never followed her.
- 0:29Speaker 5: Did they ever have a thing. She says, I don't
- 0:34Speaker 5: want your kings.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Because we're just gonna watch watch, watch, watch, watch.
- 0:46Speaker 3: It'll lay out out.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Yeah, that was good.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Another dreams.
- 1:00Speaker 5: That was fun. That one it was hard, though.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's hard when you know I am in I'm still
- 1:04Speaker 1: in America. I am now currently in my sister's apartment
- 1:07Speaker 1: and New York kids lovely to see the.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Team's interesting things happening. In the background, there's an orange
- 1:15Speaker 2: blanket with a body underneath.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I assume, okay, that.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Makes it even worse.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Mike, to be honest, and your germ and your germ
- 1:28Speaker 3: jel left shoulder, it's.
- 1:30Speaker 5: That lubelstands loop.
- 1:32Speaker 1: It's a hand sanitizer, the G and Mike G stands
- 1:37Speaker 1: for a germjel.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Mike, can I tell you sound terrific? This week?
- 1:42Speaker 1: Now?
- 1:42Speaker 4: A few listeners pointed out to me that you sounded
- 1:45Speaker 4: a bit shaky early on in the audio, and I
- 1:48Speaker 4: feel like it could could have been my.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Fond Yes, you did not hit record. I mean, the
- 1:53Speaker 1: one essential thing to all podcasting is a record of
- 1:57Speaker 1: the audio.
- 1:58Speaker 4: But I've been I've been like I'm sitting in the
- 2:01Speaker 4: seat you normally sit in, and that's too much pressure
- 2:04Speaker 4: for me.
- 2:04Speaker 5: There are a lot of buttons around here.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, ice Man had to run in the middle
- 2:08Speaker 4: of the podcast and press record.
- 2:10Speaker 5: Iceman. It's more on a man than me.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Well, it's good. I mean, apologies for the audio last week,
- 2:18Speaker 1: but we've cleaned it up and I'll be back this
- 2:21Speaker 1: time next week and we can all record together and
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna come in jet lagged as hell, and then
- 2:27Speaker 1: just we're gonna recap Miami. We're gonna sing a song
- 2:30Speaker 1: at the same time. It's gonna be beautiful.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Can you be drunk?
- 2:34Speaker 1: Oh, don't you worry. I went to the pharmacia in Mexico.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Let's just say I'm gonna be sleepy and rock hard.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Shot.
- 2:56Speaker 1: No way, guys, it's awesome to be back. I told
- 3:00Speaker 1: you last week that I got free access to a
- 3:03Speaker 1: gym with my Australian Open gear on. They also gave
- 3:06Speaker 1: me free tennis lessons, and this guy like he wanted
- 3:12Speaker 1: to play a set. I think he knew he wasn't
- 3:14Speaker 1: getting paid, and like, they just threw me a free
- 3:16Speaker 1: lesson and we played a set. I took two games
- 3:19Speaker 1: off him, and I think that angered because then he
- 3:21Speaker 1: just started bombing serves at me and it was brutal.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Do you think he knew he was fired up?
- 3:29Speaker 4: He knew you worked at the AO and he's probably
- 3:31Speaker 4: been trodden down by the tennis industry, and he was like,
- 3:34Speaker 4: I'm going to really show this guy where I stand.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I think so, yeah, yeah, I mean tell me if
- 3:40Speaker 1: you think this is weird. At the end of the lesson,
- 3:42Speaker 1: it is our long lesson, you know, Like he kills
- 3:44Speaker 1: me six 'y two in the set, and then he goes,
- 3:47Speaker 1: do you mind hanging around and having a hit with
- 3:50Speaker 1: my next student playing a few games? And I was like, yeah, okay,
- 3:54Speaker 1: that's fine. And then a twelve year old boy walks in.
- 4:00Speaker 5: This is his real pay Tell me he's not under
- 4:03Speaker 5: that towel behind you.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and he goes and I was like, what is
- 4:11Speaker 1: he a weapon? Is he like one of these prodigies
- 4:13Speaker 1: that's going to kill me. And he's like, no, no, no,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you'll be fine, you'll crush it. And I go do
- 4:17Speaker 1: you want me to take it easy? He goes, absolutely not,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and then he goes, Mike, this is Logan. Of course,
- 4:22Speaker 1: his name is Logan, and uh, he introduced myself and
- 4:27Speaker 1: then I killed him two games.
- 4:34Speaker 2: It's a pickleball court, yeah, he says, when you say,
- 4:38Speaker 2: what was his score?
- 4:39Speaker 1: Well, we only played three games and he took maybe
- 4:42Speaker 1: two points and I was not holding back and I
- 4:46Speaker 1: felt like a big man.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Did you feel good?
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:49Speaker 4: I mean you do need little wins like that sometimes,
- 4:52Speaker 4: regardless of the opposit.
- 4:54Speaker 2: The saddest part about is this kid's parents paid for
- 4:57Speaker 2: that lesson. Yeah, to be beaten by some guy from
- 5:03Speaker 2: the tennis less him today, Logan, we paid one hundred
- 5:07Speaker 2: and twenty USD for that.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Like, well, a guy in his forties destroyed me.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Maybe cry, I'm never playing tennis again.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I'll tell you something funny. Before we get into the
- 5:21Speaker 1: Miami Open. My old man he will order a giant
- 5:26Speaker 1: glass of iced tea when we go out to dinner,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and he'll put a straw in it, and then he
- 5:31Speaker 1: won't pick up the glass for the rest of the meal.
- 5:33Speaker 1: But he'll put his head down onto the glove straw
- 5:37Speaker 1: like air. It's like herb down half of the iced tea.
- 5:43Speaker 1: That's all you know.
- 5:44Speaker 4: When your parents are oll it and you can't critique
- 5:46Speaker 4: the way they eat or do that because they've just
- 5:48Speaker 4: lived a whole life they went. I was out at
- 5:50Speaker 4: dinner with my dad and he I was like, do
- 5:52Speaker 4: you want to drink? And I went up to the
- 5:54Speaker 4: bar and he goes, yeah, I'll just get a just
- 5:56Speaker 4: a tonic water, nothing else, just tonic water.
- 5:59Speaker 3: No I does that was like.
- 6:01Speaker 5: I looked at him. I said, that's the most insane.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Drink order I've ever heard in my life. Order No
- 6:08Speaker 4: I no tonic order.
- 6:11Speaker 3: That's just crazy.
- 6:12Speaker 4: But my dad looks like tonic water like He then
- 6:15Speaker 4: started getting very defensive.
- 6:16Speaker 3: You can't change these people, No, you can't.
- 6:19Speaker 1: But that just made me think of a new tennis cocktail,
- 6:23Speaker 1: the Gin and Tomic. Thank you.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Surely that's going to be somewhere at the Axe.
- 6:30Speaker 4: And after you have a glass, you just have the
- 6:32Speaker 4: urge to throw away all your potential and.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Come and get your Gin and Tomics.
- 6:42Speaker 1: So the Miami Open is in the business end. Now
- 6:46Speaker 1: we're getting to the quarter finals as we speak. The
- 6:50Speaker 1: Center Mickelson match is still on serve in the second set,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but Center took the first set. Tommy Paul took out
- 6:55Speaker 1: at your very I think Arthur Fees is starting to
- 6:59Speaker 1: show his true potential. He is cute and good at
- 7:06Speaker 1: tenants too. The biggest upset of the tournament so far
- 7:11Speaker 1: is Sebastian Kurta took out Carlos Alcaaz in the third round.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Big Carlos now seventeen and two on the season, and
- 7:22Speaker 1: I think he has a Miami problem. He lost to
- 7:25Speaker 1: Davide Guffin in the first round of Miami last year
- 7:28Speaker 1: and then losing to Korta in three sets in the
- 7:31Speaker 1: third round is huge. But it's also I don't know,
- 7:35Speaker 1: he just wants he's burnt out. I feel like Miami
- 7:38Speaker 1: is when they start to show some fatigue and they're
- 7:41Speaker 1: like sick of the hard courts and the clay court
- 7:44Speaker 1: swing kicks off next week, and so.
- 7:47Speaker 4: You don't think that this is kind of a difficult
- 7:50Speaker 4: in the film and it's assign things to come.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I think he partted, do you, Yeah, he's in Miami,
- 7:57Speaker 2: but the pictures of him with the hot chets at
- 7:59Speaker 2: the Miami.
- 8:00Speaker 3: He'd get get pictures of him with out chicks everywhere,
- 8:03Speaker 3: I know, But just a couple of nights before he's playing,
- 8:07Speaker 3: I think he got a little bit distracted.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Maybe there was a bit of love there or something
- 8:11Speaker 2: I'm reading between the life.
- 8:12Speaker 5: He's young.
- 8:13Speaker 3: He's young, and he likes to part.
- 8:15Speaker 2: He's a social kid, and I think maybe by Miami,
- 8:18Speaker 2: what is the end of March, he's like, I need
- 8:20Speaker 2: to get out there.
- 8:20Speaker 3: I need to I need to have some life.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yeah I do.
- 8:25Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 8:25Speaker 4: It is a bit worrying if you're him, because like, yeah,
- 8:28Speaker 4: it's a good point that like maybe he's now just
- 8:30Speaker 4: undone with the.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Hard court I'm going to gear up. Yeah yeah, move
- 8:33Speaker 5: to the others where I'm going to destroy.
- 8:35Speaker 4: But also wouldn't you just be he's a competitive freak,
- 8:38Speaker 4: Like surely it's it's it's gotten too many wants to win.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Yeah, they're obviously preparing for the clay court swing. I
- 8:44Speaker 1: think the calendar Slam still being on the table for him.
- 8:48Speaker 1: He took out the French last year and one of
- 8:50Speaker 1: the best finals ever against Center and then Wimbledon and
- 8:53Speaker 1: then you know who, knows what's going to happen in
- 8:55Speaker 1: the US. But like, I think he is focused on slams.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I think everything else is just a lead up to
- 9:01Speaker 1: a slam. And I think him going out in Miami, uh,
- 9:04Speaker 1: not a big deal in the big scheme of things,
- 9:06Speaker 1: because he wasn't defending any points in the first place,
- 9:09Speaker 1: because he went out to golf in in the first
- 9:11Speaker 1: round last year and he, like Lizzie said, I think
- 9:14Speaker 1: if you're that young in Miami and you're the world
- 9:17Speaker 1: number one in something, your focus is going to be
- 9:20Speaker 1: a little distracted.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Welcome to Spanish.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Don't to me, he doesn't have Miami energy though, you know,
- 9:27Speaker 4: because he's in he's like continental European.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Miami's got they speak Spanish there.
- 9:33Speaker 4: But I don't know, I feel like, you know, he
- 9:35Speaker 4: would have that Spanish snobbery to Miami.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Obviously not he's out with models party all the time.
- 9:40Speaker 4: But maybe it's like Miami doesn't suit him and that's fine,
- 9:43Speaker 4: you know. Certain his younger brother had a win though
- 9:47Speaker 4: in a tournament he's fourteen.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Did you see that.
- 9:50Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, it's not all bad for the progress.
- 9:53Speaker 1: No, I think they're doing pretty well. But I mean
- 9:56Speaker 1: he they're a very tight knit family. He brings his
- 9:58Speaker 1: brother on tours one of his coaches, and during the match,
- 10:03Speaker 1: he started yelling at his player's box, I want to
- 10:06Speaker 1: go home. I'm going home right now. I can't take
- 10:09Speaker 1: it anymore. Yeah, I mean, yeah, we've all had that
- 10:13Speaker 1: moment on stage, but not that big of a stage.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Yeah, he wanted his mom's cooking. That's what I mean.
- 10:19Speaker 4: It would just think about if you're twenty two and
- 10:22Speaker 4: you have all the money in the world and you've
- 10:24Speaker 4: never had to, like I don't know, live any part
- 10:26Speaker 4: of a nor you haven't had to live in a
- 10:28Speaker 4: sharehouse for a little bit. It is just like your
- 10:30Speaker 4: sense of what reality is would be walked a little bit,
- 10:33Speaker 4: and it would be normal to be losing in the
- 10:35Speaker 4: Miami Open and be the best player in the world.
- 10:37Speaker 5: It's I want to out mom.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I want to go back to my single bed. He
- 10:45Speaker 2: doesn't look at had well in Becoming Carlos, is it
- 10:48Speaker 2: Becoming Our Cris on Netflix? This little documentary, Yeah, he lives.
- 10:52Speaker 5: He's still living at home.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Oh that's what they say in the documentary.
- 10:55Speaker 4: True.
- 10:56Speaker 2: They show the room and it's like this little single
- 10:58Speaker 2: bed with some here and he's got his trophies on
- 11:01Speaker 2: the drawers and he's eating his mom's cooking.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Nobody makes it like my mom.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Is he bringing these models hometoe through the house?
- 11:11Speaker 5: The models like the model we're going to have to
- 11:13Speaker 5: stay at your place. Mummy is on my back at
- 11:16Speaker 5: the moment.
- 11:18Speaker 1: And I don't know if you saw this, his Australian
- 11:21Speaker 1: open tattooally on display, just poking out of the top
- 11:26Speaker 1: of his sock. There it is a kangaroo holding the
- 11:30Speaker 1: ours open trophy, and then the kind of the outline
- 11:34Speaker 1: of Australia in the background. It is, by all objective accounts,
- 11:38Speaker 1: a heinous.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Disagree more.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Hate it.
- 11:46Speaker 4: I very rarely feel like a patriotic kind of vibe
- 11:50Speaker 4: towards his country. But seeing that my heart has swelled,
- 11:53Speaker 4: isn't that awesome? We are imprinted it on the kangaroo.
- 11:58Speaker 5: I love that.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Think about how many models have outlined that little you know,
- 12:02Speaker 4: tattoo with their fingers, a post coital bliss in our hotel?
- 12:06Speaker 3: I think, but do you think we can't see the
- 12:12Speaker 3: bottom of the country. Do you think he's included?
- 12:15Speaker 4: That is so rules I can imagine if it's not.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Included, if we get him in for an interview next year.
- 12:25Speaker 1: That's going to be your first question. Yeah, we're not
- 12:29Speaker 1: going to get it.
- 12:30Speaker 5: It's kind of rude not to do it.
- 12:32Speaker 3: I am guessing it's not on there.
- 12:35Speaker 5: I like it. I'm going on record. I like the tattoo.
- 12:37Speaker 6: You like it, I'm okay with it.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I don't. I don't love it. I would have gone
- 12:43Speaker 3: k of the Animals is way cuter. I feel like
- 12:48Speaker 3: that's more Alcarez.
- 12:49Speaker 5: I would have gone.
- 12:50Speaker 4: I would have gone pop up of the Ao Mecha
- 12:52Speaker 4: store because I feel like that.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Yeah nice, or the Chemist.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I would have gone Platypus tramp Stamp, But that's just
- 13:03Speaker 1: me nice.
- 13:04Speaker 5: You can still get that many, Yeah, I know.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And I will, and you'll all be sorry. Sebbi Korda.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Then the classic thing, you take out the world number one,
- 13:17Speaker 1: and then in the next round you go out to
- 13:20Speaker 1: a Spanish twenty year old ranked outside the top one hundred.
- 13:24Speaker 1: That was today. He lost to Landa Luth. It looks
- 13:28Speaker 1: like land of Loose, but you pronounce it land du Luth.
- 13:33Speaker 3: I was pronouncing it Lenda Luce, which is way more fun.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Lend.
- 13:39Speaker 4: It must strain you emotionally to do something that crazy,
- 13:43Speaker 4: and then you have to do the next game and
- 13:45Speaker 4: it's hot Gazer back out.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Of course, because they put all their yeah, like you said,
- 13:48Speaker 1: energy and focus into this one match and then they're
- 13:51Speaker 1: you know, spent, and then you know, the next thing,
- 13:54Speaker 1: you know, you're getting beat by a twenty year old
- 13:56Speaker 1: land of Luth and you're a Luther, thank you. I
- 13:59Speaker 1: just was trying to get to that that being the
- 14:09Speaker 1: biggest upset I think on the men's side. And then
- 14:12Speaker 1: you know, I want to put it to you guys.
- 14:13Speaker 1: We've talked about it before that it seemingly every tournament's
- 14:17Speaker 1: aforegone conclusion to Center and Alcoraz in the final, but
- 14:20Speaker 1: that hasn't been the case this year. And are these
- 14:23Speaker 1: tournaments suffering because of it? Or do you think they're
- 14:26Speaker 1: more interesting? I mean, my opinion on that's constantly shifting.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I actually was hoping for an Alcaaz Center final and
- 14:35Speaker 1: now it's like, well, Centner's just going to cakewalk it
- 14:38Speaker 1: in from here.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Like I think, like it's hard, right because a classic
- 14:43Speaker 4: rivalry of like one v two does kind of rule,
- 14:46Speaker 4: like you, twenty twenty six could have been like this
- 14:49Speaker 4: iconic year where it's like every final you're seeing alcaaz Cinner,
- 14:53Speaker 4: and it's like goes down in the history books, and
- 14:55Speaker 4: I guess it's fun to look back on.
- 14:57Speaker 5: But I think upsets are kind of what makes the
- 15:00Speaker 5: tournaments in.
- 15:01Speaker 4: The storylines of people coming through that you didn't think
- 15:04Speaker 4: they would. So I think for each tournament it's obviously better,
- 15:07Speaker 4: but I think you look back, you would love a
- 15:09Speaker 4: one two just going head to head.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Historically, of course.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I like it because then because what if Sinner gets
- 15:14Speaker 2: knocked out by someone and then you have a different final.
- 15:18Speaker 1: But do you see now that Medvedev is out? I mean,
- 15:21Speaker 1: do you see anyone that's left in the draw pushing
- 15:23Speaker 1: Center at all? Maybe I don't know, Yeah, that's probably it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Maybe Arthur Fees, but I don't know. I just feel
- 15:32Speaker 1: like again Center cakewalks. And so walking back on my
- 15:35Speaker 1: prediction of Alcaraza Miami, yeah, I'm gonna say we're gonna
- 15:40Speaker 1: get the first double double where the sunshine goes the
- 15:46Speaker 1: way of the same male player and female players. So
- 15:49Speaker 1: all tournaments Indian Wells and Miami, I'll give so sabal
- 15:54Speaker 1: Anca wins the women's and then Center wins the men's.
- 15:57Speaker 1: I'll give either of you four hundred dollars if you
- 16:00Speaker 1: could tell me the last year that happened and who
- 16:03Speaker 1: the players.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Were WI four hundred.
- 16:07Speaker 1: That's all.
- 16:13Speaker 2: When was the last time that happened. I'm going to
- 16:15Speaker 2: say two thousand and eight?
- 16:17Speaker 3: Who okay, Oh I don't know who it was.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Well, you don't get the four.
- 16:22Speaker 5: Hundred seven Pete Samprus, Tina Hingis.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Oh that's actually whoa.
- 16:31Speaker 4: I mean.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Well, I mean Lizzie couldn't even name players. So I
- 16:37Speaker 1: mean you're you did well, right, I'll give it to you.
- 16:41Speaker 1: So no, I'm not going to give you thet no, no, no, no, no,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I'll give you the actual answer. Two thousand and six.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I just need a little bit of Oh.
- 16:52Speaker 1: You weren't close because it was twenty sixteen, No, and
- 16:57Speaker 1: it was Novak Djokovic and Victoria as a rancor before
- 17:03Speaker 1: that nineteen ninety four Pete Sampras and Steffi Grass.
- 17:07Speaker 6: Oh very close.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Yeah, Tennis, that's foremost.
- 17:12Speaker 3: I like these little wages.
- 17:13Speaker 5: Let's have more of more money on the table.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Yeah, so you both owe me four hundred bucks. Now
- 17:18Speaker 1: that's why.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Oh well it's not going to go that way, just
- 17:21Speaker 2: just one way wager.
- 17:28Speaker 4: As a side note though, did Medvedev not get his
- 17:32Speaker 4: racket and that's why he lost?
- 17:34Speaker 1: I think so he was. Yeah, he was using some
- 17:37Speaker 1: old copper tubing.
- 17:40Speaker 4: He had a wooden one with some brown string on
- 17:43Speaker 4: it from one of those old black and white photos.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Of w Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I would love to see them play with.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, we.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Should do for our next year's game.
- 17:52Speaker 4: The old racket, old racket, Yeah, I gets from like
- 17:56Speaker 4: the forties.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Yeah, went out to ft Sarundelo in the round of
- 18:02Speaker 1: thirty two, so he never recovered from all his travel
- 18:06Speaker 1: woes and did not get deep into the Miami draw.
- 18:10Speaker 1: But the other kind of huge upset that was on
- 18:13Speaker 1: the women's side was Igashavontek going out in the second
- 18:17Speaker 1: round to fellow countryman Magdalinette, and then of course Magnalainet
- 18:25Speaker 1: went out in her next round, So that pattern continues
- 18:28Speaker 1: of taking out a huge player and then going out.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Chevontech then responded to the loss by firing her coach,
- 18:37Speaker 1: women Facette.
- 18:39Speaker 4: And the way to respond to yeah, adversity is that
- 18:43Speaker 4: a long time coming? Though?
- 18:45Speaker 3: Was it a lot? I think she wasn't happy.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Yeah, he made her into more of a defensive player.
- 18:52Speaker 1: She wasn't as aggressively on the offense as she had
- 18:55Speaker 1: been through, kind of like probably the best patch of
- 18:58Speaker 1: her career. So I don't know. She won Wimbledon play
- 19:01Speaker 1: in that style last year, but then it's having a
- 19:04Speaker 1: real bad season this time around, and uh so whim
- 19:08Speaker 1: on the chopping board, he's gone, and who knows who
- 19:11Speaker 1: she goes with next? So yeah, chavontech, she'll probably regroup.
- 19:15Speaker 1: She plays best on clay, so you know, she's won
- 19:18Speaker 1: a ton of French Open titles, so let's see how
- 19:21Speaker 1: she does once that rolls around end of May. A
- 19:24Speaker 1: question I wanted to put to you guys, is it
- 19:27Speaker 1: time to stop giving Venus Williams wild cards into tournaments?
- 19:34Speaker 3: You don't you don't like it? Since I.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Reckon there's another person in that family that could use
- 19:44Speaker 4: the wild cards.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, that would be exciting tracks the crowd
- 19:51Speaker 2: though it's a bit of buzz when Venus is around,
- 19:54Speaker 2: like it, But I guess that.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Is the ultimate thing.
- 19:56Speaker 4: It's like, are you a pazing sponsors and stuff? But
- 20:00Speaker 4: ultimately is it negative towards tennis because she's taking the
- 20:03Speaker 4: place of maybe an up and comma that could come
- 20:05Speaker 4: through and do some more damage or had she just
- 20:07Speaker 4: don't the right to get those as long as like
- 20:10Speaker 4: the great man rode Leva, whose house we sit in
- 20:12Speaker 4: right now, and he's like, I would like to play
- 20:14Speaker 4: it in the astraight, do we give him a wild cat?
- 20:16Speaker 3: Yes?
- 20:21Speaker 5: My place destroys it.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I don't know. She's forty five years old. She's just
- 20:30Speaker 1: getting killed in the first round of every you know
- 20:32Speaker 1: tournament she gets wild carded into. Obviously in these American
- 20:36Speaker 1: tournaments there's more of a predilection to let her in
- 20:40Speaker 1: or you know, affection with having her. But then she
- 20:42Speaker 1: got killed by this UK player fran Jones in the
- 20:45Speaker 1: first round at the net. Jones said to Venus, I
- 20:49Speaker 1: have your posters on my wall. Was like cool, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and then she's I don't know, I just feel like
- 20:58Speaker 1: it's time to wrap it up. Yeah.
- 21:01Speaker 4: It's just hard because I do think like any tournament week, like,
- 21:05Speaker 4: there's going to be more buzz if you have the
- 21:07Speaker 4: Williams sisters around the tournament doing media, being involved.
- 21:11Speaker 3: So they'll be back together, Yeah, for sure.
- 21:14Speaker 5: What do they just come back and play?
- 21:15Speaker 3: I think yeah, they have to.
- 21:16Speaker 5: That would be way.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Back to make them out of the singles and who
- 21:20Speaker 4: cares about double It's like they can just blog bow
- 21:22Speaker 4: out in the first round of the doubles, that's all.
- 21:24Speaker 3: That'd be awesome.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Mike hates it, disgusted.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Yeah, we get them back in.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Well, I want that wild card spot, so you know,
- 21:38Speaker 1: now twelve year olds. So yeah, I don't know, just
- 21:48Speaker 1: something to think about going forward. I don't think the
- 21:50Speaker 1: French are going to be throwing her wild cards.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it's probably a mad trick thing.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Great Australian hope. On the men's side, demon A went
- 22:04Speaker 1: out early to sit a pass.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Retro outfit too.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Yeah what was it? It was a headband and a mustache.
- 22:14Speaker 3: You didn't like it?
- 22:15Speaker 5: No, it looks terrible, you're Mike. I think it works.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I think it works for Mike.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Demon He's like it's no good because
- 22:29Speaker 4: when he has like a bit of long flowing hair
- 22:31Speaker 4: and he'll do his press conferences in Spanish.
- 22:35Speaker 5: You're like, oh my god, this guy is a hunk.
- 22:37Speaker 4: When he speaks in his Australian accent, it's a little
- 22:40Speaker 4: mustache and he's got a headband. Now, poppy, he looks
- 22:43Speaker 4: like you'd seem at Frankston train station like, do you.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Know what I mean? I don't like it at all.
- 22:50Speaker 4: He goes from being this like hot European guy to
- 22:52Speaker 4: like this real kind of ratty.
- 22:53Speaker 5: Bogain really quickly.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fair.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I think we should send him this feedback please, Yes,
- 23:00Speaker 2: we'll clip it up.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Yeah you didn't like it, Mike.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Well, no, I liked obviously a little shitty mustache because
- 23:06Speaker 1: I have one myself, and the headband is a dying
- 23:10Speaker 1: look that I you know, Pat Cash was the biggest
- 23:14Speaker 1: proponent of back in the eighties and early nineties, and
- 23:17Speaker 1: I like, you know, bring it back. I say, don't
- 23:19Speaker 1: wear a hat, don't know sun protection, just have a headband.
- 23:22Speaker 1: And I have that weird town.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Line, yeah, cover your head in the Florida.
- 23:28Speaker 4: I have a theory about it, though. So my my
- 23:31Speaker 4: French he works at Assex right now, used to be
- 23:36Speaker 4: the Demon's apparel sponsor and for all.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Money, it looked like he was going to resign at
- 23:41Speaker 5: the start of this year. Apparently there was more money on.
- 23:43Speaker 4: The table that was offered minute. Yeah from Assex last minute.
- 23:47Speaker 4: They still don't know why. He's like, I'm signing with
- 23:49Speaker 4: Wilson and they're like, that's crazy. I think it's because
- 23:52Speaker 4: Wilson were probably like, we have a ratty little headband
- 23:55Speaker 4: you could.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Wears were maybe like under no.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Circumstance, yeah maybe, but the.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Heart wants what the heart wants.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Okay, So you're saying Wilson didn't have or they wanted
- 24:08Speaker 1: a separate look, or they didn't want.
- 24:10Speaker 4: I'm saying that Wilson, we're going to bound to whatever
- 24:13Speaker 4: the Demon wanted, and for whatever reason, the Demon wants
- 24:15Speaker 4: his headband.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Pass.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I want a headband, and I don't think so, yeah,
- 24:20Speaker 3: like that's what we do. Well I'm moving, yeah exactly.
- 24:24Speaker 4: So then you go, that's my theory based on nothing
- 24:26Speaker 4: really except the conversation I had with my friend at
- 24:28Speaker 4: the pub who was winging that they lost the Demon
- 24:32Speaker 4: or deal.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Wow, that's a big deal.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Though a big deal is a big deal. Well, I
- 24:37Speaker 1: didn't realize this, but Demon's record against sits A Paz
- 24:40Speaker 1: is now one and twelve pathetic, So his number yeah, and.
- 24:47Speaker 4: It's not like I mean, I'm sure when they both
- 24:50Speaker 4: started going head to head, Sits the pass was probably
- 24:52Speaker 4: you'd argue, like, you know, obviously the more experienced player
- 24:55Speaker 4: I had a better record or big time stuff.
- 24:57Speaker 5: But now you think he should be really right that
- 25:00Speaker 5: led you he.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Should be well, definitely, because especially in the next round
- 25:04Speaker 1: sits a pass absolutely destroyed by Arthur fees a bagel
- 25:07Speaker 1: and a baguette. Six oh six one as that is.
- 25:11Speaker 5: It's weird that as his number because there's nothing.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Tintepath does which you would be like the demon can't handle,
- 25:18Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? Like if the'monal plays
- 25:19Speaker 4: Siner or place Fair ever, someone you can see where
- 25:23Speaker 4: the weaknesses are that he'll kind of get done that
- 25:25Speaker 4: he would really have to leave him. But I don't know,
- 25:28Speaker 4: that's weird, must feel the mental block.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Mental We'll see what he does on clay. You know,
- 25:33Speaker 1: he is basically Spanish, so it should be more of
- 25:36Speaker 1: a suitable surface for him. But speaking of true blue
- 25:41Speaker 1: Aussies sensation.
- 25:51Speaker 5: Also coming from an immigrant yourself that has.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Moved again.
- 26:02Speaker 5: There Nick, Hey, Mick, I love that gold Steed.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Should we get a Crispy bike and beg? So that's
- 26:14Speaker 1: his impression, Krispy Bacon wood.
- 26:16Speaker 5: Krispy Bacon Burger, but he can't say.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Burger, Krispy bike and beg.
- 26:21Speaker 5: Yeah, he's still putting in.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Think he was in that Simpsons episode where they go
- 26:27Speaker 2: to Australia.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Prime Ministers floating in a tie most offense in my life.
- 26:35Speaker 1: It's weird that you guys do say dollary dues always.
- 26:40Speaker 5: The cafe.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Drinking.
- 26:42Speaker 4: The guy in my cafe said, he goes, that'll be
- 26:44Speaker 4: full eighty dollary dues.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Oh my god for a coffee though.
- 26:49Speaker 5: That's good and it's goddamn city. Absolutely. Yeah.
- 26:53Speaker 1: So Talia Gibson, she is having the run of her life.
- 26:57Speaker 1: She's had a great oh this Sunshine double for her,
- 27:00Speaker 1: it has been amazing. And Miami, she took out Osaka
- 27:03Speaker 1: and then iva Jovic, who are obviously huge players that
- 27:07Speaker 1: are doing good things. And Talia just with the real
- 27:11Speaker 1: strong baseline power game is just taking out these players.
- 27:16Speaker 1: In the first week getting deep into a tournament, came
- 27:19Speaker 1: up against Rebeccaha and was humbled.
- 27:22Speaker 5: But yeah, that's happened.
- 27:25Speaker 4: But the thing about Tylia I feel like is and
- 27:27Speaker 4: even when the Open Week was on here, there's a
- 27:29Speaker 4: bit of a vibe that she's like this, oh was
- 27:31Speaker 4: he bad? But she's like twenty one, like she's start
- 27:33Speaker 4: like there's a huge chance she's going to end up
- 27:35Speaker 4: in a.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Few weeks being our highest ranked player.
- 27:37Speaker 3: I feel like probly top fifty.
- 27:39Speaker 4: So it's like this is like a future staff for
- 27:42Speaker 4: a it's exciting trying.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's very optimistic. Sometimes players have like
- 27:50Speaker 1: just run for a.
- 27:52Speaker 7: Couple of weeks, just stealing yourself for that possibility that
- 27:58Speaker 7: she could just drop off at this is the two
- 28:00Speaker 7: weeks of her life.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Who owns this podcast? We're doing? What's it the Australia.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Forgive me for trying to one of our own, just
- 28:15Speaker 4: trying to get a bit of love for tennis community.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well so she did beat Osaka Osaka
- 28:25Speaker 1: a bit of yeah, and on the back of what
- 28:28Speaker 1: you would call it, but she and her pressor said,
- 28:31Speaker 1: I'm not going to stay on tour. This is Naomi Osaka.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I'm not going to stay on tour if I'm losing
- 28:36Speaker 1: in the first round. I'd rather just be a great mom.
- 28:39Speaker 3: A bit of a spiral.
- 28:41Speaker 2: I think she should read Ben Crow's new book, which
- 28:44Speaker 2: I just finished, okay, and for sure she'll quit. The
- 28:49Speaker 2: whole time I was reading it, I was like, no one,
- 28:51Speaker 2: Ash buddy quit tennis. It's all about like following your
- 28:55Speaker 2: personal journey. And I feel like if she wants to
- 28:58Speaker 2: just be a good mom.
- 28:58Speaker 4: It's that'd be well, it is, you know. I Guess's
- 29:01Speaker 4: book as well. It's like the torment these players go through.
- 29:05Speaker 4: I mean it's a pretty good point if you've been
- 29:07Speaker 4: to the top and then it's like, it's like, what
- 29:10Speaker 4: are you doing? If you're just getting pound it can't
- 29:12Speaker 4: be fine just losing all the time.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Yeah, and then missing your daughter at home, it's got
- 29:18Speaker 3: to be hard. I feel for.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Her, Yeah, to play tennis.
- 29:30Speaker 1: We've talked to Naomi like she is great, but I
- 29:33Speaker 1: just picture her just at home being a mom and
- 29:35Speaker 1: being like, hey, could you like pick up your toys.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Mis household?
- 29:45Speaker 1: Could you clean your room? Yeah? Maybe wash your hands.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I just don't see you doing it. But you know,
- 29:57Speaker 1: good for her. Whatever she wants to do, she has
- 29:59Speaker 1: my support.
- 30:01Speaker 4: I think they need to get in Miami. Did they
- 30:04Speaker 4: have one of these anger rooms that we yea where
- 30:08Speaker 4: you can get in there and smash the racket around
- 30:11Speaker 4: to the fridge.
- 30:12Speaker 5: Yeah. She needs a bit of that kind of stuff.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Yeah yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Or can she take the daughter on tour. This is
- 30:23Speaker 2: the news of the week in tennis. Forget the games,
- 30:27Speaker 2: forget sorry, forget the matches.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Forget the Miami Open. It's all about Danielle Collins. She rules.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Is this correct?
- 30:39Speaker 2: She's on the Tennis channel. Yeah, and she's got a
- 30:42Speaker 2: regular spot there and she talks of it. It's like
- 30:45Speaker 2: tea with Danielle Collins. That's the segment.
- 30:48Speaker 5: She also is looking great, not like a tennis player
- 30:52Speaker 5: at the moment.
- 30:52Speaker 1: She's hot.
- 30:53Speaker 3: She's looking at Miami.
- 30:54Speaker 4: She just looks like, yeah, Miami. See at a nightclub
- 30:58Speaker 4: and you're like, oh my god, this she's awesome.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Take a name. She in a real moment. I think
- 31:02Speaker 5: for her life.
- 31:03Speaker 3: She is well.
- 31:04Speaker 2: She just I read someone she just had like, uh,
- 31:07Speaker 2: egg retrieval done. I think she has endometriosis. Like she's
- 31:12Speaker 2: been through some stuff.
- 31:13Speaker 5: She's a brave power.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, Easter is around the corner. There's
- 31:19Speaker 1: egg hunts happening. What the hell you were talking about?
- 31:24Speaker 5: Stay there potentially.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Grotrie from the Super.
- 31:34Speaker 5: Reminder Thanks.
- 31:37Speaker 2: She goes on the Tennis Channel and she talks about
- 31:40Speaker 2: like a locker room gossip and she talks about how
- 31:44Speaker 2: Moote Cat called her in on a practice court and
- 31:50Speaker 2: then and then he robuts this and says, I never
- 31:54Speaker 2: did that.
- 31:54Speaker 8: And I basically said to him, I said, if you're
- 31:58Speaker 8: going to be flirting with me like that, you're gonna
- 32:00Speaker 8: have to get a bigger serve.
- 32:02Speaker 4: So what does that even look like? That she's just
- 32:05Speaker 4: practicing and then he walks out and he's like, hey baby, yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 4: like whistles Bebbie. That was tempted French accent.
- 32:12Speaker 1: The way I understood it is that I remember her
- 32:15Speaker 1: putting a video on Instagram where she was like, you know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: I'm on Riyah or one of the dating apps, and
- 32:22Speaker 1: if you're under five foot ten or don't bother messaging
- 32:26Speaker 1: me on there. So she said she offended all the
- 32:29Speaker 1: short men of the world, one of them being Quarantine Mute,
- 32:32Speaker 1: who then unfollowed her. And then she's some interaction where
- 32:37Speaker 1: she was like, if you don't have a big serve, you.
- 32:39Speaker 5: Need a biggest set, you need a biggest shit.
- 32:41Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Is he gonna be Yeah.
- 32:43Speaker 8: Some people think it comes down to height, some people
- 32:45Speaker 8: think it comes down to personality, but really what it
- 32:48Speaker 8: comes down to is big four hands and big serves.
- 32:50Speaker 5: And is she what is she referring? Is she referring
- 32:52Speaker 5: to like his penis?
- 32:55Speaker 4: I don't think I mean, okay, great, I just trying
- 33:00Speaker 4: to get across it. Oh, you didn't even pick up
- 33:02Speaker 4: on that she is. Of course she is uppy feed.
- 33:07Speaker 4: It's not that like slowly. It can't just be No.
- 33:10Speaker 4: I think she's being like, you know, being a sasy woman.
- 33:13Speaker 1: It was pretty obvious innuendo. But Lizzie is very innocent
- 33:17Speaker 1: and pure read into these things. But then Bute, who
- 33:23Speaker 1: I don't think had tweeted in years, Then Lizzie read
- 33:27Speaker 1: his tweet in response.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Laugh emoji, laugh emoji.
- 33:35Speaker 5: Person for the job mark, I've got it.
- 33:39Speaker 3: That's context, though, you got to add the emogi.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Laugh emoji, love emoji. How can I follow you when
- 33:51Speaker 2: I never followed you? Laugh emoji at Tennis channel? How
- 33:55Speaker 2: can you let someone say bs like this on TV?
- 33:59Speaker 2: You followed me, you asked me for mixed dubs, and
- 34:03Speaker 2: I've never even followed you. You ready to say well sorry,
- 34:07Speaker 2: laugh emoji and I never even followed you laugh emoji.
- 34:12Speaker 3: He's laughing a lot.
- 34:13Speaker 2: You ready to say anything so people talks about you.
- 34:17Speaker 3: You should learn how to love yourself. This is good advice.
- 34:21Speaker 3: You should learn how to love yourself so you won't
- 34:23Speaker 3: have to do stupid things for people.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Loves at tennis channel, good sports journalist, shake hands emoji?
- 34:31Speaker 1: What okay?
- 34:32Speaker 5: Literature, aramatic reading.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Sorry, do it all again, but this time in a
- 34:40Speaker 1: French accent.
- 34:42Speaker 3: Luffy moji, luffy moji.
- 34:45Speaker 5: She just pulled a cigarette out as well. I think
- 34:47Speaker 5: she's gonna lie to it.
- 34:48Speaker 10: How can I follow you whenever I never followed you.
- 34:55Speaker 10: That's really good tennis.
- 34:59Speaker 1: That was good.
- 35:00Speaker 5: I really like that. Okay, I really like that.
- 35:03Speaker 1: How do we feel about all of this? Is this so?
- 35:06Speaker 1: I love it?
- 35:07Speaker 3: I love the drama.
- 35:08Speaker 2: This is why I watched tennis, for the drama, for
- 35:10Speaker 2: this little off court stuff that makes it really interesting.
- 35:14Speaker 4: I think this is the most French bloke attitude I've
- 35:17Speaker 4: ever seen, just all of suddening, like I don't know
- 35:19Speaker 4: what she said.
- 35:20Speaker 5: She never messaged me. He obsessed with me. She creates
- 35:23Speaker 5: to gory.
- 35:29Speaker 3: I want the receipts, I want the screenshots. I want
- 35:31Speaker 3: to see it all.
- 35:32Speaker 1: This is math style but turns into Diego Schwartzman in
- 35:37Speaker 1: the end. He's like, people is crazy.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm just trying to do more a general European
- 35:43Speaker 4: kind of vibe.
- 35:48Speaker 5: I got Eastern European, you know.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Look I before this, she told the story and whatever.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Danielle Colin spills the tea where she said, my dog
- 35:58Speaker 1: took a ship in front of another. Oh yeah, it's
- 36:01Speaker 1: a player I don't really like. And everyone knows that's
- 36:03Speaker 1: IgA Shavan Tech and it's like and she's like, oh,
- 36:06Speaker 1: but I cleaned up the ship. It's like, who can
- 36:08Speaker 1: prove these stories? Really? I think, I mean, I believe
- 36:12Speaker 1: all women, but I also think she's making up ship.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Also, she'd had a few cocktails. Quietly look.
- 36:24Speaker 5: Tomics.
- 36:26Speaker 4: I like it from her. She's like a big personality.
- 36:29Speaker 4: She's never going to be like a legacy player. Make
- 36:34Speaker 4: some noise while you can. She'll probably end up with
- 36:36Speaker 4: a pretty cool maybe career in the world of tennis
- 36:40Speaker 4: after something. She's a personality. She's looking good as if
- 36:42Speaker 4: he keeps pointing out a podcast, well, I think that
- 36:46Speaker 4: space is kind of covered in the tennis.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Well, if she comes back to Australia, we are one
- 36:52Speaker 2: hundred percent getting her own.
- 36:53Speaker 5: She should host an episode when she comes out.
- 36:55Speaker 9: Oh yeah, sleepy and rock hard rock hard rock hard, Guys,
- 37:07Speaker 9: I know you've been waiting for this segment.
- 37:10Speaker 1: It's everybody's favorite. This is mix anagrams. This segment also
- 37:28Speaker 1: known as anagramma bova. This week the aforementioned Talia Gibson,
- 37:34Speaker 1: who is on a great run of form. She is
- 37:37Speaker 1: in Miami spending some time after being there. So I've
- 37:41Speaker 1: gone with the words Talia Gibson Miami. Okay, the picture
- 37:47Speaker 1: of Talia Gibson on a boat and if you rearrange
- 37:50Speaker 1: the letters of Talia Gibson Miami, it is I'm sailboating.
- 37:54Speaker 1: I am whoa once again?
- 38:02Speaker 5: You know wow.
- 38:04Speaker 4: To be part of the AO broadcasting team, it's like
- 38:07Speaker 4: every minute is precious and to know we are not
- 38:09Speaker 4: wasting it at all.
- 38:10Speaker 5: Absolutely fantastic boating.
- 38:14Speaker 3: I am, how does he with this? Incredibly?
- 38:17Speaker 2: I feel like this is an old picture that you
- 38:21Speaker 2: put in the document. So that's been a fun episode
- 38:27Speaker 2: of the pod. But we do have one more thing
- 38:28Speaker 2: for you, that interview, and we're going to show our
- 38:31Speaker 2: Blair Henley interview, which I wasn't a part of.
- 38:34Speaker 4: There you're away, I know, and I I mean, what
- 38:37Speaker 4: a what a what an opportunity for us to go
- 38:40Speaker 4: on a date with Tennis Royalty, and I think we
- 38:44Speaker 4: embarrassed ourselves.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Welcome back to Pod labor Arena. We have Blair Henry
- 38:59Speaker 1: Tennis reporter. Extraordinary.
- 39:01Speaker 6: Oh, thank you for that superlative on the end, the.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Best in the biz.
- 39:04Speaker 6: I'll take it.
- 39:05Speaker 1: You asked me to say all this, you did stop it.
- 39:08Speaker 4: You gave him fifty dollars cash Australian it was one hundred.
- 39:12Speaker 5: It was one hundred. Well fair enough. Hey, thank you
- 39:14Speaker 5: for coming in. This is very exciting, Mike. What is
- 39:17Speaker 5: what is this on the on the table here?
- 39:19Speaker 1: Oh? This is you guys are on a date and
- 39:21Speaker 1: I'm your chaperone. No, yeah, this is Piper Heidsig, sponsor
- 39:24Speaker 1: a pod labor arena. Slurp it up and slurp it down.
- 39:27Speaker 6: I'm so excited.
- 39:28Speaker 11: I don't I don't get this in most of my jobs,
- 39:31Speaker 11: really campaign involved.
- 39:33Speaker 1: I'm thrilled.
- 39:33Speaker 5: You're never on a on a date in a tennant
- 39:36Speaker 5: report capacitating.
- 39:37Speaker 11: No, I am generally not. I do feel like this
- 39:40Speaker 11: is like a mixed doubles pairing. Now, yeah, I'm going
- 39:42Speaker 11: with that.
- 39:42Speaker 5: Okay, all right, you guys are the could be a
- 39:45Speaker 5: mixed doubles pairing. Yeah, tennis, you're really good.
- 39:48Speaker 6: I'm okay.
- 39:49Speaker 11: I played college tennis in the States, which makes me
- 39:52Speaker 11: serviceable at best.
- 39:53Speaker 1: You guys are the Goodecian peers dating.
- 39:57Speaker 6: Look at Mike. You're a tennis person.
- 39:58Speaker 5: Now, Mike, it's not now. This guy loves tennis.
- 40:01Speaker 1: I've always been a tennis dorks.
- 40:03Speaker 4: He's no, you don't say dork. That's so offensive to
- 40:06Speaker 4: everyone consuming this podcast.
- 40:08Speaker 1: That's our demographic tennis dorks.
- 40:10Speaker 5: Tennis dorks.
- 40:12Speaker 6: Yeah, self professed tennis nerd over here.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Yeah, Claire, you're from the States. Oh my god, Okay,
- 40:17Speaker 1: would you like.
- 40:18Speaker 5: Some of these? This is some of the best champagne money.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Can you tell? Sam has never been on a date.
- 40:25Speaker 11: This foruring technique, little shaky normal people pour for me?
- 40:32Speaker 1: Fancy so Piper hide sake, twist the script. This is
- 40:35Speaker 1: date night Claire Hanley and Sam Tim.
- 40:38Speaker 5: Is it going well?
- 40:39Speaker 6: Yes?
- 40:40Speaker 1: Are you?
- 40:41Speaker 5: Do you think there'll be a second date? Is it
- 40:43Speaker 5: too early to say that?
- 40:45Speaker 11: It depends on if the producer gives me the invite first. Oh, yes, Michael,
- 40:50Speaker 11: you could write is it contractually obligated?
- 40:53Speaker 6: We'll never know, Michael.
- 40:54Speaker 5: The dates. There's a producer in a cool sheet, just
- 40:56Speaker 5: the way I like it.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Roman and a man's watching from the corner.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Yeah, on a screen.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Blair, you were hosting the One point Slam.
- 41:08Speaker 11: Yes, the qualifying, which is where things got down and dirty.
- 41:12Speaker 6: We had the best time.
- 41:13Speaker 3: We had no idea.
- 41:14Speaker 6: What was happening.
- 41:15Speaker 5: Yeah, it was chaotic.
- 41:17Speaker 6: It was the best time though.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you did such a great job, and like I
- 41:21Speaker 1: felt for you because there were so many people coming through.
- 41:24Speaker 1: You had to keep it fun and lively and stuff.
- 41:26Speaker 1: And then you watch me play and you were like.
- 41:28Speaker 5: Do you remember Mike's moment specifically or has it all
- 41:31Speaker 5: been a blow?
- 41:32Speaker 11: I don't, but I do remember trying to make sure
- 41:35Speaker 11: I got Mike's title correct, because they were like, this
- 41:38Speaker 11: is very important. Mike and Lizzie are hosting pod Labor. Enough,
- 41:42Speaker 11: it's gonna be a thing. You better introduce them. Well,
- 41:45Speaker 11: so I was trying to do your justice. So I
- 41:47Speaker 11: remember nothing about your tennis, only that you are a
- 41:50Speaker 11: comedian and host of pod Labor.
- 41:52Speaker 1: There you go.
- 41:52Speaker 5: I'll tell you, well, that's a great That is a
- 41:54Speaker 5: great quality in a romantic continent. Someone that remembers everyone's
- 41:57Speaker 5: name and puts some effort in that's right.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:59Speaker 11: Yeah, just screase the wheels for your future professional success
- 42:02Speaker 11: and social success.
- 42:03Speaker 4: And I made social I appreciate social success.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Yeah, like he clearly doesn't have any friends. He needs
- 42:09Speaker 5: to get bet up. How you enjoying? What your what's
- 42:12Speaker 5: your raid on the tournament?
- 42:12Speaker 3: So far?
- 42:13Speaker 11: I have had the best time. I'm sure you guys
- 42:17Speaker 11: get this all the time. But the happy Slam thing
- 42:18Speaker 11: is like a real feeling.
- 42:20Speaker 5: We well.
- 42:21Speaker 4: I mean, Mike has spent time at other Grand Slams.
- 42:23Speaker 4: I have not, so I just hear it. But what
- 42:25Speaker 4: makes it so different this one?
- 42:27Speaker 11: I really do think part of it is because everyone
- 42:30Speaker 11: is fresh. Yeah, yeah, we don't have months and months
- 42:34Speaker 11: of scar tissue built up.
- 42:36Speaker 6: This season is long and it's wonderful.
- 42:38Speaker 11: Tennis is the best sport in the world, but there's
- 42:40Speaker 11: a fatigue aspect to things once you get to the
- 42:43Speaker 11: US Open. So everyone's fresh. The weather is sunny and good.
- 42:47Speaker 11: The space, it really is like a festival here. There's
- 42:49Speaker 11: so much space. Other Slams would kill for the.
- 42:53Speaker 1: Space that carnival. Yes, yeah, whereas the US Open end
- 42:57Speaker 1: of the season. Everyone's had a long year here, it's
- 43:01Speaker 1: uh and the I mean it, stop me if you
- 43:03Speaker 1: think I'm wrong, But I think the grounds here huge,
- 43:06Speaker 1: they get going and compared to the US I mean,
- 43:09Speaker 1: I love Queen's you know, but it's just here. It's
- 43:12Speaker 1: they really go out to make it a party atmosphere.
- 43:15Speaker 6: Have you guys been out to AO Live?
- 43:18Speaker 5: Oh yeah, up the top there out.
- 43:20Speaker 6: In John Kane Arena.
- 43:21Speaker 11: They sent me over there to get a story the
- 43:23Speaker 11: other day, and let me tell you, I was amongst
- 43:26Speaker 11: the people I was.
- 43:27Speaker 6: I was on the floor dancing.
- 43:29Speaker 5: Oh my god, are you mash vacation?
- 43:31Speaker 1: You were marshing at kid LaRoy.
- 43:33Speaker 11: I was attempting to marsh They wanted me to get
- 43:36Speaker 11: people with good energy and we were prior to kid
- 43:38Speaker 11: Larroy going on. It took a minute, it was there
- 43:41Speaker 11: was a little pulling teeth involved, but it's it was
- 43:43Speaker 11: a scene over there.
- 43:44Speaker 5: But that's a tennis reporter.
- 43:45Speaker 4: Is that I'm sure you would prefer to be, you know,
- 43:48Speaker 4: in broad labor rainer in a tent five set of
- 43:50Speaker 4: than being over there at kid Loy.
- 43:52Speaker 11: I love that tennis allows me to do some of
- 43:56Speaker 11: the most random things like I have been Can I
- 43:58Speaker 11: tell you one random thing that tennis I have been
- 44:02Speaker 11: on And this is a US thing, but I have
- 44:04Speaker 11: been on several baseball fields with tennis players who are
- 44:09Speaker 11: doing first pitches at baseball game, which is so random.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Who had who had the worst pitch?
- 44:16Speaker 11: You know, Katie McNally had an unbelievable pitch the middle.
- 44:20Speaker 11: I mean, she absolutely crushed it. I would totally choke.
- 44:23Speaker 11: I'm terrible under pressure.
- 44:25Speaker 4: You see people choke when they do it all the time.
- 44:27Speaker 4: I just think it's commedy that how just a pitcha ball,
- 44:29Speaker 4: but they fumble.
- 44:30Speaker 11: She threw a heater right down the pipe. Steve Johnson
- 44:33Speaker 11: was was average. I watched the Brian Brothers. They were
- 44:36Speaker 11: pretty good. Yeah, but yeah, Tennis has brought me to
- 44:39Speaker 11: some very random places and I'm so thankful.
- 44:41Speaker 6: So Ale live, I'm all about it.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I want to clip that up and send it to
- 44:44Speaker 1: Steve Johnson because.
- 44:46Speaker 3: He was okay.
- 44:47Speaker 1: He was okay.
- 44:51Speaker 4: Ask a quick one. This is kind of about you.
- 44:53Speaker 4: You know you're with the players a lot. How do
- 44:55Speaker 4: they ever confide in you? How do they feel about you?
- 44:58Speaker 4: Because you know there's you would say over here, you
- 45:00Speaker 4: would know what's going on. How do they deal with you?
- 45:04Speaker 11: I feel like I'm going to get into like cheesy
- 45:07Speaker 11: territory here. But one of the most meaningful parts of
- 45:11Speaker 11: my job is when I feel like a player who
- 45:14Speaker 11: I've interviewed for years and years and years actually talks
- 45:18Speaker 11: to me like I'm just a friend behind the scenes.
- 45:21Speaker 11: That is That means a lot to me, and I
- 45:23Speaker 11: hope it means something to them as well, that they
- 45:25Speaker 11: feel comfortable enough that they can talk to me like
- 45:28Speaker 11: they would talk to anybody else. So it's really cool
- 45:31Speaker 11: when you feel like you've broken through in that way.
- 45:34Speaker 6: Sometimes you never get there. There are players I take
- 45:37Speaker 6: there are some.
- 45:37Speaker 11: And I won't mention names, but we get very trustworthy.
- 45:44Speaker 11: There are some that I'm like, it's probably never gonna
- 45:47Speaker 11: happen here. I Am going to give it my all,
- 45:49Speaker 11: and we're probably just going to end up with, yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 11: sort of average level vibes. It's never going to get
- 45:54Speaker 11: better than average vibes. But I love the challenge of
- 45:57Speaker 11: trying to.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Get the We've had so many players through here, and
- 46:01Speaker 1: like a lot of them are very guarded, right and
- 46:03Speaker 1: you know, for various reasons, they don't want to be
- 46:05Speaker 1: too forthcoming. But you're doing on court interviews as well.
- 46:09Speaker 1: I mean, to me, that's a challenge that's got to
- 46:12Speaker 1: be high pressure and to get like just a sound
- 46:15Speaker 1: bite out of them. Do you have like a go
- 46:17Speaker 1: to tactic or question when you're interviewing players after a match.
- 46:21Speaker 11: Oh, I don't know if I have a go to tactic,
- 46:24Speaker 11: but it is a particular challenge the on court interview.
- 46:28Speaker 9: Yea.
- 46:28Speaker 6: On one hand, though, you.
- 46:30Speaker 11: Always are having the chance to talk to the players
- 46:32Speaker 11: immediately after a high point, maybe in their day, maybe
- 46:36Speaker 11: in their week, maybe in their life.
- 46:37Speaker 5: They're generally in a good mood.
- 46:40Speaker 6: Yes, they are generally on a high.
- 46:41Speaker 11: So that is in the pro column of doing the
- 46:44Speaker 11: postmatch interviews. The con column is the unpredictability of that medium.
- 46:49Speaker 11: You don't really know where it's going to go. Sometimes
- 46:51Speaker 11: you don't know how much time you have. Maybe you
- 46:52Speaker 11: have to cut it off early. Maybe they want you
- 46:54Speaker 11: to fill a little bit longer. Feeling scary, Yeah, and
- 46:57Speaker 11: you also have to what's interesting about the court interviews
- 47:01Speaker 11: is you are trying to service both the broadcast audience
- 47:05Speaker 11: and the stadium audience, which are two very different audiences.
- 47:10Speaker 6: Like the audience at home doesn't really care about feeling
- 47:12Speaker 6: the love. How much love are you feeling him?
- 47:14Speaker 11: On Rod Labor Arena. The audience at home does not care.
- 47:18Speaker 11: They want to know about the match. They want to
- 47:20Speaker 11: know what the player's been up to. They want to
- 47:22Speaker 11: know about a team dynamic. So trying to make sure
- 47:25Speaker 11: you are hitting the vibes of both of those different audiences.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Is a challenge. Do you have a favorite player to interview?
- 47:31Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 47:32Speaker 6: What people say about Roger Fetter is true, all true.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Yeah, he is.
- 47:38Speaker 6: Such a unicorn.
- 47:39Speaker 11: And I the last time I interviewed him, I actually
- 47:41Speaker 11: said afterward, I said, Roger, I don't even have.
- 47:43Speaker 6: To be good at my job when I interview you.
- 47:46Speaker 11: I could say, Hey, Roger, the sky's blue and he'd
- 47:48Speaker 11: be like, it's funny you say that. I remember when
- 47:51Speaker 11: I was twelve years old on the tennis court with
- 47:53Speaker 11: my childhood coach, and he will take you down this
- 47:58Speaker 11: road and give you a perfect anecdote and be charming
- 48:01Speaker 11: along the way.
- 48:02Speaker 6: So he really is as good as everyone says.
- 48:04Speaker 1: What's been a bigger highlight in your career talking to
- 48:07Speaker 1: Roger Feeder or talking to us?
- 48:09Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean you guys come with the champagne.
- 48:12Speaker 5: Absolutely going more than where that came from. Let me
- 48:16Speaker 5: tell you.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, how is the date going on?
- 48:18Speaker 5: It's pretty good. I'll get my mum and daddy for
- 48:20Speaker 5: the next one and you can meet them and then
- 48:22Speaker 5: we can really see where this is going to go.
- 48:23Speaker 4: It's moving fast, very excited to me, very like they're fantastic,
- 48:28Speaker 4: You're going to love. Let's call them up right now.
- 48:29Speaker 4: They're actually out the front of the door. Let's bring
- 48:31Speaker 4: them in right now.
- 48:33Speaker 5: Now.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Obviously it's going well and we're having a great time
- 48:36Speaker 4: here is Do you think there's any chance that you
- 48:38Speaker 4: might be able to get a potential love interest into
- 48:39Speaker 4: the men's final on Sunday?
- 48:42Speaker 11: You clearly aren't familiar with my game and the strings
- 48:45Speaker 11: that I am able to poll around here.
- 48:48Speaker 6: Absolutely we can make that.
- 48:49Speaker 5: Oh okay. The problem is I live in a world
- 48:53Speaker 5: of when people just deny me and they say no,
- 48:55Speaker 5: So I'm I actually don't know how to respond when
- 48:56Speaker 5: someone says yes, I can help you out. We expected
- 48:58Speaker 5: that to be a I thought, it's absolutely get away
- 49:01Speaker 5: from me, you know the way most women talk to me.
- 49:04Speaker 11: Listen, Sam, We're here to build up, not tear down.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Twist the scripts, the scripts, guys.
- 49:14Speaker 3: Luffy Moggi, Luffy Moggi
