- 0:00Welcome back to The Science of Leading,
- 0:01everyone.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe-and, I'm here with the one and only Edwin Carrington.
- 0:05Edwin, how's it going today?
- 0:05Doing well,
- 0:07Claire.
- 0:08Always glad to be back.
- 0:09And yeah, this topic-honestly,
- 0:12it's one that's pretty close to my heart.
- 0:14But it's also, you know, one of those things that hits the bottom line
- 0:17for a lot of companies.
- 0:17Totally.
- 0:19And I feel like it's something a lot of people are thinking about right
- 0:22now.
- 0:22I mean-we've talked so much about hiring smarter,
- 0:25right?
- 0:25But today we're kinda flipping it around... like,
- 0:28what actually keeps people around once you've hired them?
- 0:31Because-let's be honest-just paying them more or,
- 0:34I don't know, throwing in some random perks?
- 0:36That's not cutting it anymore.
- 0:36Yeah-no,
- 0:39it's really not.
- 0:40Especially in 2025.
- 0:42Most companies are already offering solid salaries,
- 0:45decent benefits... maybe even a ping pong table or,
- 0:48you know, cold brew on tap.
- 0:50But the top people?
- 0:51They're still walking out.
- 0:53What we're seeing now is-it's not just about money.
- 0:56It's about meaning.
- 0:58It's about connection.
- 0:59And flexibility.
- 1:00That's what actually keeps people engaged.
- 1:00Okay,
- 1:04wait-how do you even know when pay's no longer enough?
- 1:07Like, how can you tell someone's basically... mentally checked out,
- 1:10even if their paycheck's solid?
- 1:10Great question.
- 1:13So, I had this client-mid-sized tech company.
- 1:17Super generous.
- 1:18Like, bonuses, equity, the whole deal.
- 1:21But within six months, they lost two of their best engineers.
- 1:25When we dug into it, it wasn't the money.
- 1:27These folks just... felt disconnected.
- 1:30They didn't see how their work fit into the bigger picture.
- 1:33They wanted more flexibility, more input.
- 1:36The perks were fine-but they weren't enough.
- 1:36Yeah,
- 1:39that makes sense.
- 1:40It's like-if all you're focusing on is the paycheck,
- 1:43you're kind of missing the stuff that really matters now.
- 1:45I've seen it with my own friends-leaving jobs that looked amazing on
- 1:49paper, but they just didn't feel,
- 1:50I don't know... right.
- 1:52Like something was missing.
- 1:52Exactly.
- 1:54And the data backs it up.
- 1:56People want to feel valued.
- 1:58They want connection.
- 1:59They want trust.
- 2:00Without those things-no amount of perks is gonna keep them.
- 2:05That's why retention has to go deeper than just surface-level stuff.
- 2:05And
- 2:09that's what we're diving into today-what actually works,
- 2:12right?
- 2:12Like, not theory, but the real-world science and strategies that help
- 2:16people feel like they belong... and actually want to stay.
- 2:16Right.
- 2:20So let's talk about ownership.
- 2:22One of the biggest shifts we're seeing?
- 2:24Moving away from micromanaging and actually letting people own things.
- 2:28When someone gets to lead a project-or pitch their own ideas-and see
- 2:33them through, they start feeling like they're building something with
- 2:37you, not just working for you.
- 2:37Yeah... nobody wants to feel like just another
- 2:41cog in the machine.
- 2:42But how do you actually build that sense of ownership?
- 2:45Is it like-just letting people go do their own thing?
- 2:48Or is there more to it?
- 2:48It's both.
- 2:50You've gotta create the space-like,
- 2:53some companies do "Innovation Days" where anyone can pitch an idea or
- 2:57take the lead on a mini project.
- 2:58But the real secret?
- 3:00Trust.
- 3:01When leadership steps back and says,
- 3:04"Hey-we believe in you," that's powerful.
- 3:06That's where pride and loyalty come from.
- 3:06Okay,
- 3:09what about vision?
- 3:10I keep hearing how important it is,
- 3:12but like... a lot of companies just throw up a poster with a mission statement
- 3:16and call it a day.
- 3:16That doesn't really do much, does it?
- 3:16Ha-no,
- 3:19nothing like that.
- 3:20Vision has to be alive.
- 3:22It's about storytelling-actually showing people how their day-to-day
- 3:25work connects to something bigger.
- 3:27One of my clients started doing these quarterly "Vision Sessions." The
- 3:32leaders would talk about where the company's heading,
- 3:35and-and this was key-they'd invite employees to share their own goals.
- 3:39People started seeing themselves in the story.
- 3:42That changed everything.
- 3:42I love that.
- 3:45But like-would that still land with remote teams?
- 3:48So many people are working from home now.
- 3:50Does vision still connect when you're not physically together?
- 3:50It can-if
- 3:54you're intentional.
- 3:55Remote teams actually need more clarity,
- 3:58not less.
- 3:58So yeah-virtual vision sessions,
- 4:01more frequent check-ins, even just space for people to share stories...
- 4:06it all adds up.
- 4:06You've gotta make sure people feel included,
- 4:09wherever they are.
- 4:09So it's not just what leadership says,
- 4:12but how they bring people into the vision-make them feel like they've
- 4:15got a voice and a real stake in it.
- 4:15Exactly.
- 4:18When people feel ownership and see how they fit into the vision?
- 4:22They're not just staying-they're showing up with their best work.
- 4:22Okay,
- 4:27let's talk about recognition.
- 4:28'Cause this one drives me nuts.
- 4:30Like-if the only time someone hears "good job" is once a year at their
- 4:34performance review... yeah, that's rough.
- 4:34Absolutely.
- 4:37Recognition has to be regular.
- 4:40And real.
- 4:41I've seen teams where just a quick shoutout during a weekly meeting,
- 4:44or a note from a peer-it totally shifts the energy.
- 4:48Doesn't have to be a big thing.
- 4:50Just needs to happen often.
- 4:50Yeah,
- 4:52even simple stuff.
- 4:53I've worked with teams who do,
- 4:55like, digital "recognition boards." Or they start meetings by celebrating
- 4:59wins-tiny things, even.
- 5:00It just... lifts everyone up.
- 5:00Exactly.
- 5:03And while we're on that-growth is another huge one.
- 5:06People want to feel like they're going somewhere.
- 5:09Whether it's a skill, a new role,
- 5:11or just having someone mentor them-it matters.
- 5:13When people stop growing, they start looking.
- 5:13Oh!
- 5:16That reminds me-didn't you have a client who totally turned things around
- 5:20just by focusing on internal mobility and mental health?
- 5:20Yes,
- 5:24I did.
- 5:24They were bleeding talent-people were leaving fast.
- 5:28So we helped them build personalized development plans,
- 5:31launch cross-team mentorship, and actually invest in wellness-like stipends,
- 5:36check-ins, real mental health support.
- 5:39Within a year?
- 5:40Retention jumped.
- 5:42People finally felt seen.
- 5:44And supported.
- 5:44That's so good.
- 5:46But what about, like-smaller companies?
- 5:48If you don't have a big HR team or a massive budget... where do you even
- 5:52start?
- 5:52You start small.
- 5:54Even just a monthly one-on-one where you ask,
- 5:57"How are you doing?
- 5:58What do you want to grow into?" That's powerful.
- 6:01Recognition costs nothing.
- 6:03And inclusion?
- 6:04It's about listening.
- 6:06Making sure every voice is heard-especially the quiet ones.
- 6:10You don't need flashy programs.
- 6:12Just... consistency and care.
- 6:12Yes!
- 6:16It's not about having all the shiny tools-it's about showing people they
- 6:19matter.
- 6:19Every day.
- 6:20That's something any leader can start doing now.
- 6:20Exactly.
- 6:24Retention isn't a checklist-it's a culture.
- 6:27It's about truly knowing your people,
- 6:29and showing them that what they care about... matters.
- 6:29Okay-that is the
- 6:34perfect note to end on.
- 6:35Edwin, thank you for sharing your brilliance as always.
- 6:38And to everyone listening-if you wanna see how these ideas play out in
- 6:41the real world, check out OAD DOT ai.
- 6:45You can book a free demo and see how the tools-like behavioral assessments-can
- 6:49help you hire better and build teams people actually want to be part of.
- 6:49We'll
- 6:54be back soon with more.
- 6:55Edwin-always a pleasure.
- 6:55Likewise,
- 6:58Claire.
- 6:59Take care out there-and just remember: great teams don't happen by accident.
- 7:03They're built-one thoughtful decision at a time.
- 7:03See you next time on
- 7:07The Science of Leading.
