SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah chapter one verses six through seven.
• 0:06
SPEAKER_00: There is something striking about the way Nehemiah responds when he hears about Jerusalem.
• 0:12
SPEAKER_00: He has just received difficult news about the condition of his people and his city.
• 0:17
SPEAKER_00: But his first response is not to make a plan, gather a team, or figure out how quickly the problem can be fixed.
• 0:26
  SPEAKER_00: He prays.
• 0:28
SPEAKER_00: And as Nehemiah prays, something deeper happens.
• 0:32
  SPEAKER_00: He begins to confess.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_00: He does not stand at a distance from the brokenness of his people and simply identify what they have done wrong.
• 0:42
  SPEAKER_00: Instead, he includes himself.
• 0:45
  SPEAKER_00: That posture matters.
• 0:47
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah was preparing to participate in the rebuilding of Jerusalem, but before he picked up a tool, he allowed God to search his own heart.
• 0:57
SPEAKER_00: Daniel does something remarkably similar generations later.
• 1:02
SPEAKER_00: In Daniel nine, he comes before God acknowledging his faithfulness and righteousness, and confesses the sin and rebellion of God's people.
• 1:12
SPEAKER_00: He says in Daniel, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments.
• 1:22
SPEAKER_00: We have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules.
• 1:29
SPEAKER_00: You see, Daniel repeatedly says, We and us.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_00: He does not approach God as though the problem belongs only to someone else.
• 1:38
SPEAKER_00: There is humility in that kind of prayer.
• 1:42
SPEAKER_00: It is easy to recognize what needs to change around us.
• 1:46
SPEAKER_00: We can see the broken places in our families, our churches, our communities, and even in people closest to us.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_00: We can quickly identify what others need to do differently.
• 1:57
SPEAKER_00: But Scripture invites us into a different kind of reflection.
• 2:01
SPEAKER_00: What if transformation begins with allowing God to transform us?
• 2:07
SPEAKER_00: This is one of the reasons prayer and fasting has such a powerful spiritual practice.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_00: Fasting is not simply about changing what we eat.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_00: It creates a space to become attentive to God.
• 2:19
SPEAKER_00: It slows us down enough to notice what is happening within us.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_00: And sometimes what God wants to reveal in us is uncomfortable.
• 2:28
SPEAKER_00: He may bring to the surface pride we have overlooked, motives we have not examined, resentment we have carried, fears we have hidden, or places where we have trusted ourselves more than we have trusted Him.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_00: That does not mean God is trying to shame us.
• 2:45
SPEAKER_00: Confession is not about convincing God that we are terrible people.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_00: It is about agreeing with God what is true and allowing His grace to meet us there.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_00: The heart of transformation is not simply becoming better at being a Christian and doing Christian things.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_00: It is allowing God to reshape our hearts so that our lives increasingly reflect His character.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah's prayer reminds us that before God worked through Him, God was working in Him.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_00: That is an important word for us in this season, where there be much to anticipate and much to do.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_00: There can be a natural excitement when we begin to see picture of what God may want to do, but that excitement can quickly become urgency, and urgency can make us want to move before we have taken time to listen.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah shows us another way.
• 3:38
  SPEAKER_00: First pray.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_00: Let God search the heart and let repentance come before anything else.
• 3:45
SPEAKER_00: Perhaps the most significant preparation for what God wants to do next is not another plan or another strategy.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_00: Perhaps it is the heart that has become increasingly surrendered to Him.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_00: Transformation often happens slowly, one degree at a time, and may begin with confession no one else hears.
• 4:07
SPEAKER_00: A moment of honesty before God, a willingness to say, Lord, search me.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_00: A recognition that we're not merely observers of what needs to change, but we are people who also need His transforming grace.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_00: We do not have to rush past that moment.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_00: And as we continue through Nehemiah, we will eventually see action.
• 4:28
SPEAKER_00: We will see the rebuilding.
• 4:30
SPEAKER_00: We will see opposition, perseverance, leadership, and restoration.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_00: But before we the walls begin to rise, there is a man on his knees.
• 4:41
SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's where God wants to meet you today.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_00: Not first in what we can accomplish for him, but in what he wants to accomplish in us.
• 4:51
  SPEAKER_00: Question to consider.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: As I allow God to search my heart, what is he inviting me to honestly acknowledge, surrender, or bring before him?
• 5:02
  SPEAKER_00: Prayer prompt.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_00: Prayer for a heart that is willing to be searched by God, honest about sin, and open to his transforming grace.
