- 0:01My mornings start out like a weird dream sequence out of a
- 0:04cowboy movie. I'm lying there, frozen, telling
- 0:07Carmen to saddle the horses because in my head we're
- 0:10escaping. In reality, I'm stuck in a bed
- 0:13waiting for my first Parkinson's pill to kick in.
- 0:16And sometimes it's not a cowboy dream.
- 0:18Sometimes it's darker. I think Carmen's a nurse trying
- 0:21to poison me with medication. And I'll and I'll tell her in a
- 0:26slurred, half asleep whisper that they're trying to get us,
- 0:30don't let them. And she'll just calmly say sure
- 0:33thing, partner, Now let's go make some coffee.
- 0:37And that's how my day starts. Not with energy or motivation.
- 0:40With confusion, stiffness and a voice that sounds like I just
- 0:45stumbled out of a bar at 10 AM. My toes are curled, my hands are
- 0:49clenched, and I'm And for about 30 minutes I can barely move.
- 0:53But here's the twist. That half hour I used to hate?
- 0:57It's now the most important part of my day.
- 1:00Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 1:04and the Reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 1:08community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 1:13Hey everyone, I'm Bryce and welcome back to Living with
- 1:16Parkinson's, The good, the bad and the Reality.
- 1:18And I'm so glad you're here. And if you're new, welcome.
- 1:21Seriously, you're part of something growing fast.
- 1:24It's just the last. In just over the last month,
- 1:27over 1700 new people have joined the community.
- 1:30And it just blows me away. It tells me that we're doing
- 1:32something that matters. And what is that?
- 1:35What are we doing that matters? We're talking.
- 1:36We're talking about real life, not the polished brochure
- 1:39version of Parkinson's. So thank you for showing up.
- 1:42And if you haven't yet, hit that subscribe button so you don't
- 1:44miss what's coming next. Because this space isn't just
- 1:47about Parkinson's. It's about living with it and
- 1:50still finding moments of joy, laughter and purpose.
- 1:54OK, let's talk mornings. If you live with Parkinson's,
- 1:58you already know that mornings can be brutal.
- 2:04Your body feels like it's made of concrete, your voice doesn't
- 2:06sound like you, and your brains wide awake while your muscles
- 2:10are still on strike. For years, I hated mornings.
- 2:14I wake up stiff, frustrated, and angry at myself.
- 2:17At myself before the day even started.
- 2:20I stare at the ceiling thinking this is how it's going to be
- 2:23forever. And honestly, that mindset made
- 2:26everything worse. Then one morning, I realized
- 2:29something. What if I stop fighting those 30
- 2:33minutes? What if, instead of hating them,
- 2:35I use them? Because I can't control when my
- 2:39pills start working, but I can control what I do while I wait.
- 2:44And here's how my mornings look now.
- 2:47I keep my pills, my water, right beside my bed.
- 2:50The moment my alarm goes off. Normally, Carmen gives me my
- 2:53pills. If she's not there, I take them,
- 2:56and I take that first dose. And then nothing happens.
- 3:00Not right away. You know that it takes time.
- 3:03So instead of lying there frustrated, I start small.
- 3:07I wiggle my toes. I roll my ankles.
- 3:10I move my fingers. It's not exercise.
- 3:13It's more like letting my body know, hey, we're still in the
- 3:16game here. Then I do some gratitude
- 3:19practice and listen. Some days it's deep.
- 3:22I'm grateful for another day with Cartman.
- 3:25Other days it's grateful for coffee.
- 3:27Whatever works, it gets my brain focused on something positive
- 3:31instead of spiraling into stress before I even get out of bed.
- 3:35And Speaking of coffee, that's the Holy Grail of my morning.
- 3:39As soon as I can move enough to get up, I head for it.
- 3:44Right for it. But there's something that's
- 3:46changed how I approached the whole start of my day.
- 3:48I actually plan it. I used to just wing it right.
- 3:51I used to take my meds at random times, eat whenever and wonder
- 3:55why some mornings were good and others were disasters.
- 3:58Once I started tracking my meds and my routines, everything
- 4:01changed and I could see when my off periods hit and I could
- 4:05adjust. Now, if you haven't done that
- 4:07yet, try it. Write down when you take your
- 4:09meds, when you eat, and how you feel.
- 4:12It's simple, but it gives you control.
- 4:15In fact, we're just about to release a new Parkinson's
- 4:18medication tracker and it's going to make it easy.
- 4:21You can log your meds, you know, note your on and off periods and
- 4:25print it off to show your doctor.
- 4:26It's totally going to be free. You'll find the link in the
- 4:29description soon, hopefully maybe even today.
- 4:32But it's the exact tool I wish that I had years ago.
- 4:36Now I want to talk to you about something else.
- 4:39What happens in those frozen 30 minutes?
- 4:41Because I bet I'm not the only one.
- 4:44That strange dream state when your body's stuck and your
- 4:47brains running lapse. You know, 1 morning I was
- 4:50convinced I was hosting a dinner party for my old Co workers in
- 4:53bed. I kept asking Carmen where the
- 4:56advertisers were. She said right here, chef.
- 4:59And she handed me the pills and I said, those are not on the
- 5:02menu. And that's the kind of stuff
- 5:05that Parkinson's throws at you. And when and and we can either
- 5:09get mad about it or we can laugh about it.
- 5:11It's your choice. It's our choice.
- 5:14But here's your first take away for the day.
- 5:16Humor helps more than you think. You can't always move your body
- 5:21first thing, but you can shift your mindset.
- 5:24If you can laugh even for a second, you take back some of
- 5:27the power that this disease tries to steal.
- 5:32And with that, that leads me right into Carmen's corner or
- 5:35Carmen's care partner corner, Sorry.
- 5:38And she said this to her. You did this for you today.
- 5:41Hi everyone, It's Carmen. Mornings in our house are never
- 5:43boring. Sometimes, Bryce.
- 5:45Sometimes Bryce wakes up in a cowboy mode, and sometimes he's
- 5:49convinced I'm plotting against him.
- 5:50And other days he just lies there, stiff as a board, trying
- 5:53to pretend he's meditating. Well, really, he's only just
- 5:55waiting for me to go get the coffee.
- 5:59How'd she know that? Here's what I've learned.
- 6:01Patience is everything. I used to try to rush him,
- 6:04thinking if I got him moving faster, he'd feel better faster.
- 6:08But that's not how it works. Now I take those 30 minutes as
- 6:12my time to. I breathe, I plan, I take care
- 6:15of myself because you can't pour from an empty cup, as I always
- 6:19say. So if you're a care partner
- 6:21watching this, remember, your job isn't to fix it or to fix
- 6:24them. It's the support.
- 6:28And that includes taking care of you.
- 6:29Well, thank you, Carmen. And you know what?
- 6:33She's right. Mornings are tough for both of
- 6:34us because you know, they're tough, but we're also that's
- 6:39also taught us teamwork. You know, if you're living with
- 6:42Parkinson's, drop still waking up, still waking up in the
- 6:45comments. And if you're care, partner, why
- 6:47don't you drop this team caffeine?
- 6:49Because let's be honest, some days coffee is the glue holding
- 6:52this relationship together. Now let's talk about how you can
- 6:56reclaim your mornings. OK, so take take take some note
- 7:00of this. OK, so here's tip number one.
- 7:02Stop fighting the slowness. The more you fight it, the worse
- 7:06it always gets. Give yourself permission to warm
- 7:08up. You're not lazy.
- 7:10You're letting your body recalibrate.
- 7:13OK, it's not lazy. You just have to recalibrate.
- 7:16All right, here's tip #2. Prep the night before.
- 7:20Set out your meds, set out your water, set your clothes, your
- 7:23coffee mug, everything. Parkinson's already gives you
- 7:27enough surprises. Future you will think past you.
- 7:32And here's tip #3 sunlight. As soon as you can move, open
- 7:36the blinds or step outside. Natural light helps reset your,
- 7:40your, your, your rhythm and boost dopamine.
- 7:43And let's face it, we could all use a dopamine bump.
- 7:47And if you not sunny out, you live in a dark place like I'm
- 7:49about to go into in the middle of Canada as we move in towards
- 7:53the winter months and it's dark here like all the time.
- 7:56I got myself 1 of this alarm clock light.
- 7:59It's like light comes on, it slowly comes on like a like a
- 8:02sun rising and it lights up the side of my face.
- 8:05And I'll tell you what it is really cool.
- 8:08I wake up feeling better. I wake up feeling more refreshed
- 8:11with it. It's really neat.
- 8:12I'll put a link in the description flow if you want to
- 8:14take a look at it. They're not expensive, but
- 8:15they're they're really cool. OK tip #4 hydrate early.
- 8:22I know coffee feels urgent, but water comes first.
- 8:25Dehydration makes stiffness worse, so start your day with a
- 8:28glass of water before your first cup of coffee.
- 8:32Did you know that I, you know I have, I, I say this like I'm so
- 8:36confident, but you know, I got to try better at that one.
- 8:40And tip #5 find one small win. You know, some mornings my win
- 8:45is getting my socks on without wrestling, without a wrestling
- 8:48match, and other days it's being ready for a meeting by 9:00 AM.
- 8:50It doesn't matter how small it is that that one win sets the
- 8:55tone for the rest of your day. Because here's the truth.
- 8:59Parkinson's might decide how your day starts, but you get to
- 9:02decide how it goes. Now, I want you to think about,
- 9:05I want you to think about this. What's one thing that you can do
- 9:08tomorrow morning that would make your day a little bit easier?
- 9:12It could be prepping your pills. It could be stretching before
- 9:15you get out of bed, could be setting an alarm or having some
- 9:18gratitude time. Tell me in the comments what
- 9:21your morning win will be, and then let's see how it goes.
- 9:25OK. And while you're down there, why
- 9:27don't you subscribe? Because when you do, you're
- 9:30joining a movement of people who are done just coping.
- 9:33We're learning to live all over again.
- 9:36And if you want more tools like the Med tracker, that's coming
- 9:40up here, a boot camp for Parkinson's, for newly diagnosed
- 9:43folks, the links are in the description.
- 9:45And if you want to go deeper, join the inner circle.
- 9:48It's our community where we share, we laugh, we vent, and we
- 9:51keep each other going. It's awesome.
- 9:54And with that, you've unlocked today's racism.
- 9:59Here it is with Parkinson's. You can't always control how
- 10:02your day begins, but you can control the story you tell about
- 10:07it. I like that.
- 10:09So until next time, I'll tell you what.
- 10:11I want you to keep waking up. I want you to keep laughing and
- 10:14I want you to keep doing life today.
