- 0:30Tony Kubek standing alongside of Gus Triandos watching Milt Papas loosen up. Papas has 1-12 in lost states this year against the Yankees. He has no wins and 2 defeats. His lifetime record against New York, 3 wins, 4 defeats. And his lifetime mark in the big leagues, 37 wins and 27 defeats.
- 1:00Papas is 6'3", 200 pounds on May 11, 1939. And he's just 21 years old. This is his fourth year in organized ball. And he has come a long, long way.
- 1:23Tony Kubek steps into the batter's box. Frank Frasetti is coaching down his third. And Ralph Mauck is down his first.
- 1:37This ball game ready to get underway.
- 1:43There's going to be lots of excitement here tonight. Plate on fire, Charlie Berry, dusting off home plate. On deck is Cletus Boyer. Kubek batting 287, 22 doubles, 3 triples, 10 homers and 55 runs batted in.
- 2:01Here's the windup and the first pitch of the ball game is in there for a false strike. He's fired a fastball right through the middle.
- 2:16A beautiful night for a ball game here in Baltimore, Maryland. The pitch is fouled back in the upper deck strike 2. Nothing in 2 on Kubek.
- 2:33For some of you who may not have heard, the Orioles purchased Dave Philly from the Giants today. And he is here in time for the ball game. He has been an outstanding pinch hitter in his last few years in the big leagues.
- 2:46Here's a two-strike pitch. Ground foul outside of first.
- 2:51Whitey Ford continues to loosen up down in the Yankee full time. Whitey, not completely satisfied with the time he had a lot of time to warm up, is pitching to Elston Howard down in the bullpen down the right field line.
- 3:06Baltimore bullpen situated down the left field line.
- 3:10Pappas again into the windup. Picks delivers a fastball foul back in the upper deck.
- 3:17A fast straight strike that Pappas has drawn without throwing a ball. Kubek has fouled off two of them.
- 3:34Again the windup by the right hander. Pappas hits the center field on a high curve ball. So Pappas refused to waste one. And Kubek swinging away, lines his single to center.
- 3:47There's the first hit of the ball game.
- 3:51And it brings up Fletus Boyer, the Yankee third baseman.
- 3:56Boyer batting 249. 17 doubles, one triple, 12 homers and 39 runs batted in.
- 4:04We have two of the finest third baseman in baseball playing against each other tonight. Brooks Robinson for Baltimore and Fletus Boyer for the Yankees.
- 4:12Jobo holding first against Kubek. The pitch to Boyer is one of that and missed strike one. Jobo and Robinson charging in from first and third. On deck is Roger Maris.
- 4:31Boyer looks down at Frank Crissetti.
- 4:35Kubek leads York first. The pitch is one of that and missed again. Strike two. And Boyer is shaking his head with his hands on his hip.
- 4:45Bill Pappas is fast out there tonight. He fired the first two strikes by Kubek but couldn't get the third one by him. He threw the first two right by Fletus Boyer. He has yet to throw a ball to do batter.
- 5:00Nothing in two on Boyer. The stretch by Pappas. A pitch just outside ball one. Big gut Triandos doing the casting tonight for Baltimore.
- 5:15We'll hear lots of yelling tonight. Pappas sets again. His pitch is strike three swinging.
- 5:25No, wait a minute. Triandos dropped that ball. He fouls, hits it. And Larry Knapp running in from first base. Saw the ball hit the ground. Triandos picked it up so quickly we didn't even see it hit the ground from up here.
- 5:38Wait a minute now. Wait a minute. Hold the ball. Larry Knapp is coming in. Talking to Charlie Berry.
- 5:47He's out. He is struck out. Triandos did not drop the ball. And let's see if Casey Stanger will come out. Paul Richards has jumped out of the Oriole dugout.
- 5:58Boyer fouls, hits the ball. And it hit poor Triandos glove. And he lunged for it. We couldn't see whether it hit the ground or not.
- 6:05First Larry Knapp signals safe. And then after Walter Joplin talked to him, Knapp came in to Charlie Berry and said that the ball did not hit the ground. So it hit the strikeout swinging.
- 6:18And there's an unusual play right here on the top of the first inning. It's a strikeout for Pappas. One out here is Roger Maris.
- 6:26Maris batting 293. Has 16 doubles. Five triples. 35 homers. And 96 runs batted in. Roger leads the American League and homers in RBI.
- 6:36No score. Top of the first inning. Hubeck at first. Here's the stretch by Pappas.
- 6:41Pipps to Maris. The ground ball at second base. Reading to Hanson for one. Back to first. Double play.
- 6:56A fine double play by the young Baltimore infield as Reading backhanded the ball to Hanson and his rifle throw to Droko doubled Maris.
- 7:07So in the top of the first inning for the Yankees, no runs on one hit. No ball of Maris. Nobody left. And the score at the end of one half inning of play, the Yankees nothing and the Orioles coming to back.
- 7:23Ever hear of a gasoline that doubles as a mechanic? In a way, Atlantic Imperial gasoline does just that. Here's how. When you drive, exhaust fumes and other air contaminants escape your air cleaner and collect in the carburetor in the form of deposits.
- 7:40Now even a small amount of deposits can cause an improper mixture of air and gasoline. When this happens stalling, rough idling, and actual gasoline waste results. Now one way to handle a dirty carburetor is to get under the hood and clean it manually.
- 7:56But why go to all that trouble and expense when Atlantic Imperial does the job for you without even raising the hood? Atlantic Imperial actually cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean. With a clean carburetor you get proper mixture of gasoline and air.
- 8:13You'll enjoy smooth engine performance, greater gasoline economy. Give it a try. Use Atlantic Imperial gasoline to keep your car on the go.
- 8:42Why he has defeated Baltimore 5-0, 2-0, 5-2 and 1-0 so he's shut them out 3-9.
- 8:58Jackie Brand leading off steps into the batter's box. Batting 2-55. Jackie has 21 doubles, 6 triples, 13 homers, and 55 runs batted in.
- 9:18Here's Whitey's first pitch to Grant. It's a big hit to left hand. A solid line drive on a first pitch. Barres up with it and Grant makes a big round of pace and goes back.
- 9:43On a very first pitch, the Orioles get their first base hit. Here's Jim Woodling who is hitting it safely in 17 straight games.
- 9:5326 for 63, batting a 413 average. His average on the year is 289. Here's the stretch to pitch to Woodling. Low outside ball one. Gene has 18 doubles, 3 triples, 10 homers, 53 runs batted in.
- 10:13The excitement here tonight is tremendous. Battle of a first place going on right now. Grant with a short lead off first. A stretch by Whitey. The pitch is low, ball two, 2-0.
- 10:40Will Scharren holding first against Jackie Brand. Here's the stretch. The pitch is a curve hit high in the air to right field. Maris is going back. He's got a roll though. Under it, Grant is tagging. Maris makes a catch. Grant's going to try for a second to throw.
- 10:57It's not in time and Grant is in there. Jackie Brand with heads up base running. Tagged up and went to second base on Woodling's long fly to deep right field.
- 11:22And that brings up Brooks Robinson, the third baseman. No score here in the bottom of the first. Robinson batting 3-0-1. 22 doubles, 8 triples, 11 homers, and 70 runs batted in.
- 11:43Here's the stretch by Whitey. Mitch Robinson is swinging and missed strike one. On deck, Walter Droppole.
- 12:01Grant at first went halfway on the high fly ball. Then he saw Maris backing up and he huddled back to first. Tagged up and slid in easily ahead of Maris' long throw in from right field. One strike on Robinson. The stretch by four. There goes Richardson over to second, but Whitey steps off the rubber.
- 12:19A lot of the fans yelling Bork. They didn't see Whitey step back off the pitching rubber. Again, Whitey's set. Pitch inside, ball one, one-on-one. Almost hit Robinson.
- 12:32Lum Harris is coaching down at third. Jimmy Adair is down at first base for Baltimore. Perfect night for a ball game. One-on-one on Robinson. The stretch by four.
- 12:53He's going to right field and it's been half a rest for Bateson. Reading is scoring and Robinson's going to try for three. No, he holds at second base with a long double.
- 13:19Puts Robinson, lined a double deep in the right field corner. It picked off the wall. Maris played it perfectly and Robinson, who had ideas of going to third, rounded second and held up.
- 13:32For Robinson, his twenty-third double of the year. His seventy-first run batted in and Baltimore leads one-nothing. Here's Walter Droppole batting 268. Eight doubles, three homers, twenty runs batted in. One out.
- 13:44Where in the bottom of the first? Whitey's set. Fastball is low, ball one.
- 13:54Robinson is just about the most improved hitter that we've seen in baseball this year.
- 14:04Outfield deep and around towards left on Droppole. The pitch, slow curve, is swung and it missed strike one, one-on-one.
- 14:29Droppole holding that bat way down on the end. Here's the stretch by four.
- 14:42Curve line. Boy has got it. Throw to second, double play. Droppole hit a shot right at Cletus Boyer and before Robinson could get back to second, Boyer rifle to Richardson for the double play. So for Baltimore in the bottom of the first, one run on two-base fifth.
- 15:01No Yankees errors and nobody left in the score at the end of one full inning. Baltimore one and the Yankees nothing. Both teams have come up with clutch double plays in the first inning.
- 15:13So Baltimore scored one run on an exciting first inning as Grant Singles went to second on a long fly by Woodland hit the deep right field after he tagged up and then scored on a double by Brooks Robinson.
- 15:26Droppole then hit it on a double play to end the inning.
- 15:31Man, the first inning that exciting. Imagine what the rest of this game and series is going to be like.
- 15:37And after this crucial series, the Yankees fly right back to New York to face the Boston Red Sox in a 1.30 p.m. Labor Day doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. That's Monday afternoon.
- 15:46And Fred Williams, who very well may be well in his final month of baseball during his spectacular career, is back in the lineup along with the RBI leader, Vic Worth and slugger, Frank Malzahar.
- 16:04On the scoreboard in the American League, Washington is Boston playing a finite doubleheader. The senators are leading four to two at the end of eight innings. Lee against Nichols, Jim Lemon and Dan Dobeck have home it for Washington.
- 16:17And Fred Williams in the eighth, a 516th of his career. You know he's going to be at Yankee Stadium on Labor Day. Mickey Mantle will be leading off for the Yankees here in the top of the second with Baltimore leading one to nothing.
- 16:44The Yankees are leading with a 2 to 78, 15 doubles, six triples, 31 homers and 78 runs batted in. He takes a fastball over strike one call. On deck is Bill Skaran.
- 17:00He's been keeping up this pace all night. It'll be remarkable. He's firing that ball. That's a curve ball to the second base. Reading to Drop ball, he's out. They got him. A fine play by Bob Reading. I never thought they'd get Mantle.
- 17:16Mickey dragged what looked like a perfect one past the pitches box but Reading came charging in and threw off balance at Drop ball. Just in time to nip Mantle one away. Here's Bill Skaran.
- 17:33The Moose batting 3-0-9, 29 doubles, three triples, 25 homers and 86 runs batted in. The pitch to the Moose is swung and a missed strike one. On deck Yogi Berra.
- 17:50Outfield deep straight away on the Moose. Fastball is just outside ball one one-on-one.
- 17:58Jim Woodling in left field is giving Skaran a lot of the left field line. He's shooting him over towards left center.
- 18:06Right field, Jackie Brant, is straight away but deep and Busby straight away in center field and deep. Here's the one-one pitch to Skaran outside ball two. Two and one.
- 18:31Pappas takes a deep breath out on the mound. The windup. His pitch is popped in the air foul. Hanson and Robinson chasing it. It's near the wall and goes into the seat.
- 18:43Both Hanson and Robinson were there as that ball stayed in the playing field. Both of them could have caught it but it went back about two rows in the box seat.
- 18:52There's lots of room to roam for foul balls from the back of home plate all the way down the left field line and down the right field line.
- 19:01It's 3-0-9 in left field and right field. Four-ten and straight away center. Two and two on Skaran.
- 19:13The pitch is right three swinging.
- 19:24Pappas chalked up his second strike out of the ball game and here's Yogi Vera.
- 19:30Yogi batting and even three hundred. Eleven doubles, one triple, fourteen homers and fifty-one runs batted in.
- 19:40Real rabbit fans down here in Baltimore.
- 19:51Bears have drawn over a million fans so far this year.
- 19:58Two out, nobody on. One-nothing Baltimore leads. The pitch to Yogi is high outside ball one.
- 20:06On deck, Johnny Blanchard.
- 20:12One-nothing pitch. He's swung and a missed strike one, one-on-one. Yogi went after a high breaking ball, didn't get it.
- 20:27Here's the one-one delivery. Change up high, ball two, two and one.
- 20:42The two-one pitch is outside ball three, three and one.
- 20:52Pappas behind Vera, three and one. Yogi swinging that thick pass back and forth, keeps it low to the ground.
- 21:00The windup. The pitch is right called. Yogi jumps around and argues with Charlie Perry and he is arguing with him.
- 21:07Yogi thought he had a base on balls that time.
- 21:12Three and two on Yogi.
- 21:16Yogi turns around and look in the Yankee dugout. Old habit of Yogi.
- 21:22And the fans are starting to ride, Yogi. Both out, three-two, two out, nobody on. One-nothing Baltimore leads.
- 21:29Here's the payoff pitch to Yogi. Strike three, back him out.
- 21:38Pappas gets his third strikeout as he sets the Yankees down one-two-three, nothing across in the top of the second. And the score at the end of an inning and a half, Baltimore one and the Yankees nothing.
- 21:53Oh, are you really satisfied with the way your car has been acting lately? Maybe it's nothing you can actually put your finger on. More frequent stalling perhaps or rough idling, less miles per gallon. Now, your trouble could be a dirty carburetor, something that can happen to any car, even a relatively new one.
- 22:12You see exhaust fumes and other air contaminants get by your air cleaner and build up deposits on the carburetor wall near the throttle plate. Even a small amount of these deposits can cause the throttle plate to feed an improper mixture of air and gasoline to your engine.
- 22:28The result is rough performance and actual gasoline waste. But now you can eliminate the problems caused by a dirty carburetor with new Atlantic Imperial gasoline. Atlantic Imperial actually cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 22:45So to end stalling, rough idling and gasoline waste due to a dirty carburetor, use Atlantic Imperial. The gasoline that adds pleasure to your driving and keeps your car on the go.
- 23:09Does have an operation on his thumb of the right hand. He is still wearing a golf glove with a sponge on the back.
- 23:23He missed over a month of the season.
- 23:27He has been helping the birds here in plate. Why do you put on them on what nothing board is more lean
- 23:34Wind up by Whitey the pitch is low outside ball one on deck is Ron Hanson a shortstop
- 23:43Left side of the Yankee infield playing Chando's deep and over towards third Barrett deep and left
- 23:48Oh curvers in the dirt ball to do nothing Johnny Blanchett picked it up rocks up the ball before firing it back to Ford
- 24:09I'd here's the wind up by whitey that's for low ball 33 nothing
- 24:28I'd here's the wind up by whitey that's all in their strike for three and one what steps out of the batter's box to look down at long Harris the third base coach
- 24:44Very little wind blowing the night will not affect any balls hit on the outfield
- 24:5031-foot low curve inside ball for a loss and there's the first walk given up by whitey Ford and it brings up the shortstop Ron Hanson batting 261 19 double five
- 25:05Triples 19 homers and 74 runs batted in this year's all-star shortstop by the opposing players
- 25:19John was pleased offer to pitch the Hanson is low ball one Hanson is 6 3 and 190 pounds Blanchett called time without the amount of talk with Ford
- 25:34He was born May 4th 1938 this is only his fourth year in organized ball
- 25:50The curve is popped in a short right field Richardson going back and make the catch and hit that ball right off his fifth
- 26:07And it brings up Jim Busby the center fielder was be batting just 239 six doubles and seven runs batted in
- 26:21All Richard that stock is batting order with right handers only one left hand hitter that's Woodland there's a pitch on the outside corner strike one for
- 26:44He chokes up in about he can fly on deck as Mark reading the second baseman Triando short lead off first curveball almost hit Busby ball one one one
- 27:07Ball one strike one out one nothing Baltimore leads bottom of the second ball file of the plate one ball two strikes
- 27:29And now scour and moves in back of the runner in first base got triandos not holding him close to the bag
- 27:38Just no speed merchant on the base pass what he said outside ball to two and two
- 27:50He's playing a shallow center field as his marathon right you'll be fairly deep in love must be not noted for his power more the line drive type better
- 28:07Whitey takes off a couple of times now he's got the one he likes that's a good one and a missed like three already talked about his first strike out of the night getting him both being a bring up the second baseman
- 28:20Now reading reading is hitting 281 having a fine year 23 doubles one triple three homers and 38 runs batted in right hand any second baseman
- 28:43Here's a stretch by Whitey curveball is high ball one
- 28:54Lots of fans standing out on the street watching this game way in back of the parking lot the center field I bet that's the first time I ever had that happen in a baseball game here
- 29:05This was one of the missed like one one of us the interest in this series is amazing and it should be the same way when Baltimore visits the Yankees at Yankee Stadium later on this month
- 29:21I'll tell you about that upcoming series at the end of the city curveball is high ball to two and one outstanding ball team the Yankees in Baltimore
- 29:40One strike two out three and those is a third state Baltimore leading one nothing in the bottom of the second by Whitey that's the line of a second base on a long single a left center field by Ma
- 30:01That's the third hit off Whitey Ford and it'll bring up the pitcher milk Pappas
- 30:11Batting all 56 is three to 54 one homer and three runs batted in on deck is Jackie Brent who's single and scored in the bottom of the first the only run of the game
- 30:39Pappas holding that bat way down on the end by Whitey curveball is over strike call
- 31:05The stretch curveball outside one of one
- 31:20Is it first and second leading away Whitey said this is a current format and this like to cut by milk Pappas here in the bottom of the second Baltimore leading one another
- 31:47Here's the stretch by Whitey curveball swung and it missed like three as Whitey took a little bit off the curve
- 31:55Second strike out before for Baltimore in the bottom of the second no runs on one hit no Yankee or assume them left in the score at the end of two full and easy Baltimore one and the Yankees nothing
- 32:12A clean carburetor helps give extra gasoline mileage so use new athletic imperial the gasoline that cleans your carburetor as you drive and keep this clean
- 32:42The first game of the 29 doubleheader five to one lead all the way to win a Sullivan the loser lemon and go back home at the Washington headwind and tag one for the Red Sox are only run the 516th of his major league career
- 33:08Detroit is at Chicago tonight Cleveland the Kansas City of the National League three 19th Milwaukee Cincinnati Chicago with St. Louis Los Angeles at San Francisco in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh not scheduled
- 33:20Baltimore will be at Yankee Stadium on Friday night September 16th Saturday afternoon the 17th which is a ladies day and a doubleheader on Sunday September 18th
- 33:35Leading off for the Yankees Johnny Blanket batting 274 happens his first pitch is a strike as he went around far enough he checked his swing but has gone better than halfway around so it's strike one called by Charlie Berry Johnny has two doubles three homers and 10 runs Saturday
- 34:00After this is keeping that curve ball in on the left handers right tight to their fifth if they do hit it so far they pull this file there's a fastball file at the plate strike two on deck Bobby Richardson Baltimore leading one nothing here in the top of the third
- 34:30Ready now for the two strike pitch curve over strike three ball Blanket called out three strikeouts in a row for Milt Pappas his fourth of the ball game
- 34:43And the top of the second truck out blanket leading off here in the third is Bobby Richardson Bobby batting 249 11 doubles two triples one homer and 23 runs battered in Blanchard gave Barry a little bit of an argument after that very false right
- 35:04A little high strong little excited tonight Richardson takes a pitch lower ball one one out nobody on
- 35:20The next pitch is a little low ball two to nothing. Brooks Robinson is playing way in the third and the right side of the Baltimore infield not playing too deep looking for a possible push punt by Richardson
- 35:36Pitch is over strike call just below the letters two and one. Pappas has really got to be in great shape and have a strong on the throw this hard for nine innings. The two one pitch strike two as he swings in this is a curve ball two and two
- 35:55He's young and he's strong and he might be able to do it. We'll wait and see. Here's the wind up the two pitch strike three swing fourth strikeouts in a row for Milt Pappas his fifth of the night
- 36:14That brings up whitey for whitey batting 136 one double three runs batted in
- 36:37Pippen. Pippen is out front high ball one Ron Hanson the shortstop is playing forward like a right hand pull hitter as his woodlanding in left field only woodlanding playing very shallow. The one nothing pitch strike call on the outside corner one on one on Jack Tony Koubek
- 37:02Pippen is in the middle of the gate pull over and left center now one one pitch curve over strike two for one ball two strike. Here's the wind up high curve ball two two and two that one got away from Pappas
- 37:29Pippen is the first pitch of the night by Milt that hasn't been close to the plate. Two ball two strikes two out nobody on. Pippen fouls back on the screen.
- 37:52Pippen rubs up the new ball. He doesn't take too much time between pitches. Now it is whitey's turn. Now he's ready. Check the signs from Gus Triandos. Here's the wind up the pitch high ball three full count on four three and two.
- 38:17Full House at Memorial Stadium for the first game of the big three game series the Yankees and the Orioles. Now the payoff pitch to whitey. Ground ball at second base. Mark greetings up around the big hop over the drop over the easy out.
- 38:42Pappas again sets the Yankees down one two three nothing across on the top of the third. The score at the end of two and a half. Baltimore one and the Yankees nothing.
- 38:54Well Mr. Thompson we found the trouble. Your carburetor is dirty. Look you mean that little bit was enough to do it. That's right. Because of the close clearance of the carburetor just a small amount of the deposit can cause a throttle plate to feed along with air and gasoline. So your engine stalls a lot. Idle's rough and waits gasoline.
- 39:16What causes that deposit. You know I take good care of my car. It's not your fault. You see exhaust fumes and other stuff in the air. Get by your air cleaner and build up in your carburetor. Well is there any way I can prevent these deposits. There is no. Just start using Atlantic and gas. Atlantic and why. Well it's because the Atlantic and they make today will actually clean out your carburetor and clean while you drive. You mean I won't have to spend money to have my carburetor clean again. No sir.
- 39:45Atlantic and gas is all you need to keep your carburetor clean. Okay. You told me my next thing for the planet. In the bottom of the third inning it'll be the top of the Baltimore batting order to take what he thought for the second time.
- 40:02Jackie for a team would be and broke Robinson. I think a lot of people want to second on Woodland's long flight. I feel that the tagging up and caught on a double by Brooks Robinson. All of these one.
- 40:18I had what he thought it takes the time from Blanca the wind up.
- 40:37One.
- 40:52Is why you know the wind up.
- 41:08And it could possibly have been an inside the park. Oh my God.
- 41:22Beautiful play by Yogi Bear.
- 41:24Take an extra base it away from Jackie Brandt.
- 41:2817 Woodland.
- 41:48One strike.
- 42:03One strike one out nobody on.
- 42:06That's right.
- 42:24Baltimore has been hitting Whitey Hurt up to this point.
- 42:31Now one ball, two strikes head.
- 42:35Curve foul back on the screen.
- 42:37Now holes at one ball and two strikes.
- 42:41On deck, Brooks Robinson.
- 42:53Woodland with that slowest stand to this.
- 42:58He's almost together, right foot almost on home plate.
- 43:02Swings and misses a curve, strike three.
- 43:04Not Woodland.
- 43:06By the second strikeout.
- 43:08That's his third strikeout of the ball.
- 43:11He struck out, was the end-happened.
- 43:14And here's Brooks Robinson, a double right field
- 43:16driving in the only run of the game.
- 43:18His 71st RBI of the year.
- 43:29On deck, Walsh, two out, nobody on.
- 43:33Tetsu Robinson has a curve over the outside corner, strike one, crawl.
- 43:46One strike fifth is inside, ball one, one on one.
- 44:04There's Whitey, into the windup.
- 44:06Curve is hitting the ground, a short pullback,
- 44:08up with it, the throw to Skarn in time to get Robinson.
- 44:13So Whitey sets the birds down, one, two, three for the first time
- 44:16in the ball game, nothing across.
- 44:18The score at the end of three full innings.
- 44:20Baltimore one run, three hits, no errors.
- 44:22And the Yankees no runs, one hit and no errors.
- 44:28There's only one game to report so far on the scoreboard.
- 44:30Washington beat Boston in the first game, five to one.
- 44:35The Yankees play Baltimore here again tomorrow afternoon
- 44:38and Sunday afternoon.
- 44:41So make sure you're tuned in for those ball games.
- 44:45And these Orioles are going to be in the pen and erase right down to the wire.
- 44:49Certainly a colorful, exciting ball call.
- 44:53You'll have another chance to see these exciting Orioles
- 44:55in a weekend at Yankee Stadium.
- 44:58They meet Friday night, September 16th, in the final 80s day game on Saturday
- 45:03and the last double hundredth of the season on Sunday, September 18th.
- 45:07You've got to get those tickets now while they are available.
- 45:20For the Yankees, they'll have the top of their batting order to face Milt Papas.
- 45:25Kubek, who led off the ball game with a single of ten,
- 45:28was doubled on a ground ball by Maris.
- 45:32So Papas actually faced just nine men in three innings.
- 45:36He was given a one hit, no warts, and struck out five.
- 45:44On deck, Cletus Boyer.
- 45:50Baltimore won Yankees nothing.
- 45:52Top of the fourth.
- 45:55The pitch to Kubek is over, strike one called.
- 45:57Tony dropped the bat and Herb Robinson came charging in.
- 46:03Robinson and Boyer were on deck at two of the most exciting young third-graders
- 46:07that we've seen in a long, long time.
- 46:11The 71st RBI of the year.
- 46:21On deck, Walsh, out.
- 46:23Two out, nobody on.
- 46:25Two Robinson is a curve over the outside corner, strike one called.
- 46:38One strike pitch is inside, ball one, one on one.
- 46:56There's Whitey into the windup.
- 46:58Herb has hit on the ground and short.
- 47:00Kubek's up with it.
- 47:01The throw to Sauron in time to get Robinson.
- 47:05Whitey sets the bird down one, two, three for the first time in the ball game.
- 47:08Nothing across.
- 47:09The score at the end of three full innings.
- 47:11Baltimore one run, three hits, no errors.
- 47:13And the Yankees no runs.
- 47:15One hit and no errors.
- 47:19There's only one game to report so far on the scoreboard.
- 47:22Washington beat Boston in the first game five to one.
- 47:26Yankees play Baltimore here again tomorrow afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
- 47:33So make sure you tune in for those ball games.
- 47:36And these Orioles are going to be in the penitentiary right down to the wire.
- 47:40Certainly a colorful, exciting ball play.
- 47:44You'll have another chance to see these exciting Orioles in a weekend at Yankee Stadium.
- 47:50They meet Friday night, September 16th, in the final 80s day game on Saturday.
- 47:55And the last doubleheader decision on Sunday, September the 18th.
- 47:59They'll have those tickets now while they are available.
- 48:11For the Yankees, they'll have the top of their batting order to say, Will Pappas.
- 48:17Krubeck, who led off the ball game with a single at center, was doubled on a ground ball by Maris.
- 48:23So Pappas actually faced just nine men in three innings.
- 48:27He has given up one hit, no warts and a fork out five.
- 48:35On deck, Cletus Boyer.
- 48:41Baltimore won Yankees nothing.
- 48:43Top of the fourth.
- 48:46The pitch to Krubeck is over.
- 48:48Strike one call.
- 48:49Tony Bluff to Bucs and Brooks Robinson came charging in.
- 48:54Robinson and Boyer, who was on deck, are two of the most exciting young third racers we've seen in a long, long time.
- 49:01Pass was popped to left field.
- 49:03It could be trouble.
- 49:04Woodland digging, but a turning foul.
- 49:07Woodland could not catch up to that ball.
- 49:09That would have been a double, possibly a triple.
- 49:11Woodland shading Krubeck over and left center.
- 49:13Had a long run.
- 49:14The ball dropped foul about six or seven inches.
- 49:18Ronnie Hanson, the shortstop, couldn't get out there in time and Woodland couldn't get over there.
- 49:24Nothing in 21 Krubeck.
- 49:25It was all the way down to second base.
- 49:27Tony now walking slowly back across the diamond.
- 49:30Get to Zap from the Yankee Bat Boy.
- 49:38Tony had a fine year for extra base.
- 49:40He has 22 doubles, three triples and 10 homers.
- 49:46A windup, and the curveball is popped to left field this time.
- 49:49Dean Woodland hardly has to move in his tracks.
- 49:52Under it and makes the catch.
- 49:54That's one away.
- 49:58Bring up Peter Boyer, who struck out swinging in the first inning.
- 50:01That kind of an unusual play on that one.
- 50:04As Boyer swung and missed, the endo had the ball pop out of his glove and he lunged down to catch it.
- 50:09Larry Knapp first called Boyer safe.
- 50:12We thought that he had dropped the ball on the ground then after talking with Walt Joplin played on by Charlie Berry.
- 50:17They reversed the decision and called Boyer out on a strikeout, saying that the ball had never touched the ground.
- 50:25Wild, nobody on.
- 50:27Pitch to Boyer.
- 50:28Hit high in the air to left field.
- 50:30Woodland is moving back.
- 50:31He's under it though and makes the catch.
- 50:34That's two away.
- 50:41That's Roger Maris, who bounced in with a double play in the first inning.
- 50:59Pitch to Maris is a little bit low, ball one.
- 51:03Pappas came in with a breaking pitch that time that dipped below the knees.
- 51:11One-nothing pitches.
- 51:12Line foul, just foul.
- 51:15Man, that looked like it hit right on the foul line, but Larry Knapp, who was no more than 10 feet away, right on the play called his foul.
- 51:22Boyer was close.
- 51:26Now it's line to foul down the right field corner.
- 51:29One-on-one.
- 51:30Two out, nobody on.
- 51:31One-nothing Baltimore leads, top of the fourth.
- 51:45Wind up by Pappas.
- 51:46The changeup is swung and a miss strike too, and he pulled Maris on that one as Roger was way out in front.
- 51:55Maris' timing has been a little off.
- 51:57Remember, he missed a little better than two weeks with his bruised wrist.
- 52:04And even though you take a lot of batting practice, it's never like the game.
- 52:08The pitch curveball is high, two and two.
- 52:24Now the two-two delivery, high outside ball three.
- 52:27Tried to put a little extra on that fastball and got away from him.
- 52:31On deck, Mickey Mantle.
- 52:36Three balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 52:40Now the payoff pitch.
- 52:42A drive through deep right field, but Grant is going back under it and makes the catch.
- 52:50The third inning in a row that Pappas has set the Yankees down in order, nothing across.
- 52:54The score at the end of three and a half innings, Baltimore one and the Yankees nothing.
- 53:06Eliminate the problems caused by a dirty carburetor with new Atlantic Imperial gasoline.
- 53:11Atlantic Imperial actually cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 53:17So to end stalling, rough idling and gasoline waste due to a dirty carburetor, use Atlantic Imperial,
- 53:25the gasoline that adds pleasure to your driving and keeps your car on the go.
- 53:48Four Baltimore in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 54:09Walter Dropo who lined in a double play in the first inning.
- 54:35Dropo was hit foul outside of third, strike one.
- 54:44Baltimore one, Yankees nothing. We're in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 54:52On deck, Gus Triandos.
- 55:00Whitey swings into the windup. Fastball, he checks his swing and it's high ball, one one one.
- 55:18Whitey ready. One one pitch is lined in center field and it's in there for a base hit.
- 55:24And that ball pulled Mickey, it took off. Mickey started back and then he saw the ball take off.
- 55:30He came in, had an idea to catch it, shoot string and then had a back up and the ball almost went by him.
- 55:36There's a long swing of the center field.
- 55:39There's a ball that actually took off. Hit number four off Whitey's fourth.
- 55:45And here's Gus Triandos who walks in the second inning.
- 55:49Fastball could easily have skipped by Mickey, but Mickey blocked it with his body.
- 55:56That's by Whitey. Hit Triandos low inside ball one.
- 56:10Baltimore one, Yankees nothing, bottom of the fourth.
- 56:15There's a stretch. Third ball, ball two, two and nothing.
- 56:23Whitey can get Triandos to hit that ball in the dirt. He's got perfect double play in there.
- 56:27I'm Jobele at first and Triandos at the plate.
- 56:31Neither who can run very fast.
- 56:37He's got a first for Jobele with a short lead is back easily.
- 56:45An excited crowd here tonight, capacity crowd.
- 56:49A stretch. Low outside ball three, three and nothing. On deck Ron Hanson.
- 57:07Three balls, no strikes on Triandos. Here's the stretch.
- 57:12Low ball for Elarcon. The second time Triandos has walked. And that's the second walk given up by Whitey.
- 57:20Jobele moves to second, Triandos to first. Nobody out and here's Ron Hanson who pops up to the second baseman in the second inning.
- 57:33Blanket is out on the mound talking with Whitey Ford.
- 57:40Jim Gentile who leads the Orioles in RBI's with 84 is not playing tonight.
- 57:46Oh, Richard doesn't play him against left hand pitches. Even though he's got plenty of power. He's got 20 home runs.
- 57:55Whitey goes to the rousing bag.
- 57:57Skaren is playing in front of the runner at first.
- 58:00Boyer is in at third. Kubek close to second and Richardson halfway at second.
- 58:07Looking for the bunt situation. Here's the stretch.
- 58:13He takes it for a strike and he was not ready to bunt that time.
- 58:18Hanson was ready to swing away. Skaren was charging in at first base.
- 58:23Hanson has 19 homers and 74 runs out of it.
- 58:30Baltimore threatening here in the bottom of the fourth. They lead 1-0.
- 58:38Whitey says, third low inside. Almost hit Hanson in the foot. 1-1.
- 58:59Whitey says again.
- 59:03Third low inside and gets away from Blanket. No, it hit him. It hit him. It hit him in the foot.
- 59:09And he takes it safe.
- 59:16Whitey just missed hitting Hanson with the previous hit on a low par ball.
- 59:21This one hit Hanson in the foot. Kicked away from Blanket. Blanket jumped after it.
- 59:26And here's Hanson's jangle. Whitey Ford wanted to see the spot on the ball.
- 59:33And the fans are getting on Casey.
- 59:40And Casey's asking Johnny Blanket if the ball hit the batter in the foot.
- 59:44Now he's talking with Charlie Berry. The bases are loaded with nobody out.
- 59:48Here in the bottom of the fourth, Baltimore leads 1-0.
- 59:52A single, a walk and a hit fast.
- 1:00:00Casey with his hands on his head talking with Berry at home plate.
- 1:00:06Now Casey turns around, walks back to the Yankee dugout.
- 1:00:10Kim Busby who struck out in the second inning of the batter.
- 1:00:17And the ball hit to him. He'll come to the plate pointing to Blanket.
- 1:00:24The rest of the infield back and double plate.
- 1:00:28Busby can fly. He's a tough man to double.
- 1:00:31Nobody on the bases loaded.
- 1:00:38Hanson at first. Riembos at second. Dropo at third. Here's the windup.
- 1:00:43They're blowing. Strike ball one. That one almost hit Busby.
- 1:00:47And there goes Eli Gerber down the bullpen with Elston Howard.
- 1:00:52Eli Gerber is going down and loosening up.
- 1:01:07One ball and no strikes on Busby. The windup.
- 1:01:13On deck, Ma's leading.
- 1:01:21Gerber's beating up in a hurry.
- 1:01:31Whitey checks the sign from Blanket. Here's the windup.
- 1:01:37Herb Lowe ball through two and one. Nice block by Blanket on a curve in the dirt.
- 1:01:43Ward was in trouble in the first inning, the second inning.
- 1:01:46Retired the Ordos in order in the third.
- 1:01:49But he's in trouble here now as the bases loaded and nobody out at two-one count on Busby.
- 1:01:54Blanket and Scarron are out in the mound talking with Whitey.
- 1:01:58Gerber continues to heat up.
- 1:02:20Two balls, one strike. Here's the windup.
- 1:02:23Gerber's line of left field and it's a big hit. Only one run will score.
- 1:02:42Jim Busby lined a single of left field.
- 1:02:46And the only jug open score, Gus Briano's in second as we showed you, can't run too well. And he held his third on Yogi's throw to the plate.
- 1:02:54The bases remain loaded. Nobody out.
- 1:02:57Baltimore leads two-nothing in the bottom of the fourth and here's Mark Reading, who's single of left center field in the second inning.
- 1:03:04Again, Boy is in it third in the rest of the infield and double play depth.
- 1:03:12And for Busby, that was only his eighth run batted into the air, but what a big run.
- 1:03:16All right, Whitey into the windup.
- 1:03:19Curve inside ball one.
- 1:03:25Nobody out and the bases loaded. One run in.
- 1:03:38Right hand hitting Mark Reading, the second baseman.
- 1:03:43Windup.
- 1:03:45Heard Swung and a missed strike, one-one-one.
- 1:03:51Reading steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:03:53Walks around a little bit.
- 1:03:56Now he's back in, ready to go.
- 1:03:58One ball, one strike.
- 1:04:07Here's the windup.
- 1:04:09There's a foul out of play in the upper deck.
- 1:04:12One ball, two strikes.
- 1:04:24And you can hear the fans in the background.
- 1:04:31The windup.
- 1:04:41Larry Ness started to call him out and saw that Reading beat the throw and then put his hands down.
- 1:05:02Another run crosses the plate and Baltimore leads 3-0.
- 1:05:06On the fourth play, from Kubek to Richardson.
- 1:05:08So at Hanson, move to third.
- 1:05:11Reading is safe at first.
- 1:05:12He gets credit for an RBI for Reading his 39th run batted in.
- 1:05:16And now with run at the first and third and one out, here's Milt Pappas who struck out in the second inning.
- 1:05:22And now the Yankee infield has to look for a possible squeeze play.
- 1:05:27Garand holding the bag against Reading.
- 1:05:30Boyer in at third.
- 1:05:34Boyer at second.
- 1:05:38Kubek is the only infielder playing deep.
- 1:05:45Here's a stretch by Whitey.
- 1:05:50The pitch is a curve in there, strike one call.
- 1:05:54He was not squaring around a lot that time, but now he takes a look down at Lum Harris,
- 1:05:59the third base coach, 3-0 Baltimore leads here in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:06:08Stretch by Whitey.
- 1:06:12The pitch is a curve high, ball one, one-on-one.
- 1:06:21Five hits off Whitey for the three runs with one out in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:06:28Yankees have not scored a jet.
- 1:06:31All right, now Whitey's set.
- 1:06:34The pitch is a ground foul outside of third.
- 1:06:38One ball, two strikes.
- 1:06:42On deck, Jackie Brent.
- 1:06:55All right, again Whitey's set, run his lead off first and third.
- 1:06:59Curve high, ball two, two and two.
- 1:07:11Eli Gervais still throwing down in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:07:17All right, ready for the two-two pitch.
- 1:07:19He bumps at it and he's out.
- 1:07:22He fouled the pitch off trying to bump with two strikes on him.
- 1:07:26It goes to the strikeout for Whitey Ford, his fourth of the ballgame.
- 1:07:33And with a bad pitch that happens one after and fouled off.
- 1:07:37And here's Jackie Brent, who's single to left and scored and lined deep to left.
- 1:07:41They're making a sensational catch against the wall.
- 1:07:44Two out, two on, two in.
- 1:07:46Baltimore leads 3-0 in the bottom of the ball.
- 1:08:06All right, now Whitey's stretching.
- 1:08:08It's for Brent outside ball one. Mark reading it first and Ron Hanson over third.
- 1:08:25Whitey into the stretch position.
- 1:08:28Slow curve high, ball two, two and up. On deck, Gene Woodland.
- 1:08:44Two balls, no strikes on Brent.
- 1:08:47Curve foul just below it. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:09:06Ready for the two-one pitch. Ground foul outside of there, two and two.
- 1:09:18A lot of douches on the scoreboard. Two balls, two strikes, two outs, two men on and two runs in.
- 1:09:23Baltimore leads 3-0 here in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:09:28Jam-packed crowd here at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.
- 1:09:33Reading Leesor first. There he goes. The pitch is popped in the air.
- 1:09:37In back of the plate, Johnny Blanchard is moving back.
- 1:09:41And makes the catch for the out in foul territory.
- 1:09:47You are tuned with Quality Modern Radio, 1460 on your dial.
- 1:09:51This is WOKO Albany, New York.
- 1:09:56Baltimore 3, the Yankees nothing and we pause for station identification.
- 1:10:24Now I'd like to mention that the second half of this game is being brought to you by the Chris Refresher Valentine's Beer.
- 1:10:30You know, Valentine's is a light beer with true lager flavor.
- 1:10:34And that's what makes it the Chris Refresher.
- 1:10:40We've got a dandy little ball game going here.
- 1:10:43With Baltimore leading 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning, it'll be Mantles, Garron and Barrett to face Milt Pappas.
- 1:10:51Pappas has faced just 12 men in four innings.
- 1:10:55Though he gave up a hit to Kubek, Kubek was on the front end of a double play.
- 1:10:59Maritz bounced into it.
- 1:11:03Milt has struck out five and has not walked anybody.
- 1:11:08Mickey Mantles, who laid down what appeared to be a perfect bunt, was thrown out on a great play by Mark Reading the second baseman.
- 1:11:17Mr. Mantles strikes on the outside corner.
- 1:11:31Pappas is still firing that ball.
- 1:11:39Here's the windup.
- 1:11:41That ball inside. Ball one, one, one.
- 1:11:55Here's the one, one pitch. A swing and a foul.
- 1:11:57Tipped back and hit Charlie Berry's mask and shook him up.
- 1:12:00Boy, you could see Charlie shake his head and fall back a step.
- 1:12:03To a solid foul off the umpire's mask. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:12:12Mantles digs in at home plate.
- 1:12:21Here's the windup.
- 1:12:23Foul at the plate and that hit off Mickey's foot.
- 1:12:26That ball was fouled right down off Mickey's right foot.
- 1:12:34Mick just looking down at the foot.
- 1:12:36He would love to reach down and grab and pull that spiked shoe off, but he knows if he hit it, the fans would really get on him.
- 1:12:42That hurts.
- 1:12:47Boy, Pappas didn't give him much time to get set. The pitch is outside, two and two.
- 1:12:52I think he was just starting to tap the plate with his back when Pappas went into the windup.
- 1:12:57It's just quick out there. It doesn't take much time.
- 1:13:03Two, two, pitch. Strike three, please.
- 1:13:09Strike out number six for the young right-hander.
- 1:13:12And here's Bill Skaren who struck out in the second inning.
- 1:13:16One time Pappas struck out four Yankees in a row. Skaren, Barrow, Blanchard and Richardson.
- 1:13:22He also has Boyer and Mantles.
- 1:13:28One out, nobody on.
- 1:13:30Pitch to the moose. It's fouled on the right field line way back in the upper deck.
- 1:13:40Three nothing, Baltimore lead. Top of the fifth, one out, nobody on.
- 1:13:50On deck, Yogi Barrow.
- 1:13:54One strike pitch, slow ball one one-on-one.
- 1:14:07One-one delivery. Hit off the plate, down the third base line with a kick foul.
- 1:14:13Skaren was across first base.
- 1:14:17He was taking no chances in case that ball stayed there, but a kick foul halfway down between Holman and Thurst.
- 1:14:22Briandos picked it up. Throw it to one ball, two strike count on the moose.
- 1:14:33Pappas is throwing from up here what appears to be a fast curve or a slider.
- 1:14:39It doesn't break much, but it breaks quick at the last second.
- 1:14:44And that is really a tough pitch at times.
- 1:14:49Here's the one ball, two strike pitch, fouled back in the upper deck.
- 1:15:11Pappas on the mound for Baltimore. Wings into the winder. Good strike, three swinging.
- 1:15:23Strike guard number seven for Pappas. And that was that fast-breaking pitch we told you about.
- 1:15:28It starts to the outside part of the plate. And then just as a batter swings for it, it goes away from them.
- 1:15:34And just the reverse to a left-hander. It's on the inside part of the plate. When they swing, it comes in on their fifth.
- 1:15:39So even if they do hit it in there, they can't hit it very far off the handle.
- 1:15:43Yogi Berra struck out his first time at that. Two out, nobody on.
- 1:15:51This is Yogi outside. Pappas out of Triandos close. Picked up by Johnny Blanchard who's on deck, ball one.
- 1:15:58And Yogi started to ask Berra to take a look at the ball, but then Triandos threw it back for the pitcher, so Yogi didn't even bother.
- 1:16:08One ball, no strikes on Yogi.
- 1:16:13Here's the winder. Low inside, ball two, two and up.
- 1:16:22Two-nothing pitch inside, ball three, three and up.
- 1:16:38So Pappas is in danger of walking his first man tonight. He's behind Yogi, three and up.
- 1:16:47Pitch strikes, ball three and one.
- 1:17:02Wind up, pitches pop, ball in the upper deck, strikes two, both out on Yogi. So Pappas came right back with two strikes.
- 1:17:17Grubs up the new ball.
- 1:17:32Now the wind up. The payoff pitch, five foul going out of play.
- 1:17:38Again back in the upper deck. Out holds it three and two on Yogi. Baltimore leads three-nothing. We're in the top of the fifth inning, two out, nobody on.
- 1:17:48Three-two count on Berra.
- 1:17:58Johnny Blanchard swinging the big weight at bat on deck.
- 1:18:02Three-two pitch, pop in the air. The shortstop Ron Hanson is moving back in short left field. He's under it and makes the cut.
- 1:18:11And for the fourth consecutive inning, Pappas sets the Yankees down one, two, three, nothing across.
- 1:18:18Baltimore at the end of four and a half innings, Baltimore three and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:18:33Two-two count on Berra.
- 1:18:53Two-three, the beer must be ice-free. Two-large flavors, ice-free.
- 1:19:03The mold is whistling clear. The crisp, free pressure. Hey, get cold beer. Hey, get cold cold beer. Get cold, fast, fast beer.
- 1:19:27Gene Woodling, who is open two and has his 17-game heading streak on the line, leads off of Baltimore here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:19:35With the Birds leading the Yankees three to nothing. Gene flying to right and struck out.
- 1:19:43The only left-hand hitter in the Baltimore lineup tonight. Takes the curve low, ball one.
- 1:19:51Ready for it. He's been in trouble. Three of the four Yankees so far.
- 1:20:00The curve swung at him. That's strike one, one-on-one.
- 1:20:05You don't usually see Woodling go after the change-up curve ball.
- 1:20:19The curve ball hit in the ground at second base. Richardson up with him. Over to Scour and one away.
- 1:20:27One-on-one that brings up Brooks Robinson, who doubled the right field to drive in a run in the first inning and then bounced the short in the third.
- 1:20:36One-out, nobody on. On deck, walls drop out.
- 1:20:47Switch to Robinson. It's popped in the air. Johnny Blanchard, the catcher, is getting under it in foul territory.
- 1:20:54Makes the catch and it's two away.
- 1:20:59This boy had come all the way in from third base in case Blanchard was going to have any trouble with that high pop.
- 1:21:05And here's walls drop out, who lined into a double play in the first inning and then lined a single at deep center. He also scored in the fourth inning.
- 1:21:13One for two is a big drop out. Two out, now nobody on.
- 1:21:28Curve to hit deep to left field. That's gone if it stays there. And home run for Walter Droppo.
- 1:21:52Walter Droppo gets his fourth home of the year and his 21st run batted in at Whitey Ford's home at J.J.
- 1:22:08Baltimore now leads four to nothing. Here's Gustiano. He's been up twice and walked both times. He's scored one run. Makes the curve outside, ball one.
- 1:22:27He's got a little low outside, ball two. Two and nothing. Whitey has had trouble pitching to Trianto so far tonight. He walked him in the second and fourth inning. In the fourth inning on fourth, Grace Fitches.
- 1:22:45Here's the wind up. Slow curve foul back in the seat.
- 1:22:53He's scored one strike.
- 1:23:00Ryan Gurer now is down to Yankee bullpen.
- 1:23:16Whitey Fitch, slow curve hit high in the air to left center field. Way back, Yogi going back. Falling for it. And Mantle there and Mantle makes the catch right in front of Yogi.
- 1:23:25And deep left center field. Baltimore on the bottom of the fifth. One run on one hit to Homer by Walt Droppo. No Yankee errors and nobody left. The score at the end of five full innings. Baltimore four and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:23:49On the scoreboard, Washington beat Boston in the first game for 29 doublehead of five, one Lemon Dobeck and Ted William Coleman in that game. In the second game is Boston one, Washington nothing at the end of one.
- 1:23:59Detroit is at Chicago. Regan against score. Cleveland is down to city starts later on. The national league, Milwaukee and Cincinnati, Jay against McLeish. Chicago at St. Louis, Cardwell against Jackson. Los Angeles or San Francisco starts later on. And Philadelphia and Pittsburgh not scheduled.

- 1:24:59Johnny Blanchard who struck out in the third inning leads off against Milt Papas here in the top of the sixth with Baltimore leading Florida nothing.
- 1:25:12First pitch by the right hander is low ball one.
- 1:25:16On deck, Gil McDougal looks like Mack is going to bat for Richardson.
- 1:25:25Wind up the pitches foul back on the screen.
- 1:25:35Ryan Durant is loosening up in the Yankee both and looks like Stangles going to go to his bench.
- 1:25:42Will have a pinch hitter for Richardson and possibly a pinch hitter for Whitey Ford who is due to follow.
- 1:25:49Touched to Blanchard change up a long strike to again Blanchard try to check his swing but went far enough around.
- 1:25:55Charlie Berry puts up that big right hand.
- 1:25:59One ball two strikes.
- 1:26:09Wind up.
- 1:26:10There is his strike three called. He got Blanchard for the second time.
- 1:26:14And his eighth strike out of the ball game.
- 1:26:18And that is the first called strike out that Papas had the other seven with swinging strike out.
- 1:26:27And here is Gil McDougal batting for Bobby Richardson.
- 1:26:31McDougal batting 259. 13 doubles, 3 triples, 5 homers and 27 runs batted in.
- 1:26:40Bobby is the only apparent struck out in the third inning.
- 1:26:45Papas quickly into the wind up the pitch to McDougal as the curve over strikes one called.
- 1:26:49Gil had just about time to get set on that batter's box.
- 1:26:53You got to be ready with this boy out there.
- 1:26:59Gil is trying to slow Papas down a little bit. Now he is ready.
- 1:27:03Wind up.
- 1:27:05Curve strike two cleaning.
- 1:27:07He took a little bit off the curve ball that time and had McDougal out in front.
- 1:27:10Nothing in true on Gil.
- 1:27:12Charlie Berry little house cleaning down at home plate.
- 1:27:26Here is the wind up.
- 1:27:28Best ball is high. Ball one.
- 1:27:30I figured he had McDougal set up for the high hard one as he threw him two breaking pitches before that.
- 1:27:38Now the one ball two strike pitch. Inside two and two.
- 1:27:46Two balls, two strikes, one out. Nobody on. Four nothing. Baltimore leads. Top of the sixth.
- 1:27:53The two two pitch. A broken bat fly ball right at the shortstop.
- 1:27:56Two outs. McDougal broke his bat hitting it on the handle right at Ronnie Hanson.
- 1:28:05That's your way. And here is Dale Long coming up to bat for Whitey Four.
- 1:28:11Long wearing uniform number 25.
- 1:28:13Kent Hadley's old uniform number.
- 1:28:16Is batting 429. He's three for seven. One homer and two runs batted in.
- 1:28:21Two outs. Nobody on.
- 1:28:29Here's the wind up. Pitch is popped in the air.
- 1:28:32In back of the plate Gus Triando throws an ass away.
- 1:28:35Coming under it. And makes the catch for the outs.
- 1:28:43Three more men in a row. That's 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 17 men in a row.
- 1:28:50That's Papas, Hesring, and Sire.
- 1:28:52Nothing across for the Yankees in the top of the sixth.
- 1:28:54And the score at the end of five and a half.
- 1:28:56It's Baltimore four and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:29:06You see this bat here is actually nice.
- 1:29:27tones of love.
- 1:29:43Howdy
- 1:29:45Howdy
- 1:29:53Just a nice, golden, bound, I see
- 1:30:01For the Yankees, Ryan Duren has come on to take over for Whitey Ford on the mound
- 1:30:06and Gil McDougal moves into play second base in place of Bobby Richardson
- 1:30:10Duren is making his 35th appearance of the year
- 1:30:14He is 1-3 and lost 4
- 1:30:17With a total of 38 in the third inning, giving up 22 hits
- 1:30:2323 runs, 3 home runs
- 1:30:28He walked 39 and struck out 49
- 1:30:31He has a 4.74 earned run average
- 1:30:34So these red hot Baltimore Orioles, leading 4-0 here in the bottom of the sixth
- 1:30:40have Ronnie Hanson ready to lead off against Duren
- 1:30:44Hanson pops to second base and was hit by a fixed ball
- 1:30:58On deck is Jim Busby
- 1:31:00We might see a few changes now with the right hand hooker out there
- 1:31:04We might have some left handed pinch hitters, but we'll wait and see
- 1:31:08By Duren on the mound, big, slow windup
- 1:31:12Hicks to Hanson, high, no it's not, strike one
- 1:31:16That's not to say high for a ball
- 1:31:20Hanson was crouched way over that place
- 1:31:24That's a good one
- 1:31:39That's ball inside
- 1:31:46One and one
- 1:31:48The count on Ronnie Hanson here in the bottom of the sixth inning
- 1:31:52Nobody out and nobody on
- 1:31:54Baltimore 4, the Yankees nothing
- 1:31:56The same two teams meet tomorrow afternoon and Sunday afternoon
- 1:32:01Be on the air at 1.55 both days
- 1:32:051-1 pitch, low outside, gets away from blanket, rolls to the screen, balls 2, 2 and 1
- 1:32:12Browd gets a big charge out of that
- 1:32:18There's the windup, big tie inside, balls 3, 3 and 1
- 1:32:483-1 pitch, high inside, balls 4
- 1:32:52After getting the first strike over, Duren threw four bad ones and Hanson walked
- 1:33:00And Jim Busby is being called back now
- 1:33:04And just as we figured the left handed hitters are going to strike
- 1:33:08The Yankees are going to strike
- 1:33:12And Jim Busby is being called back now and just as we figured the left handed hitters are going to start coming out
- 1:33:20And it looks like Dave Billy who was just purchased from the San Francisco Giants making his appearance here tonight
- 1:33:30Dave Billy
- 1:33:36Wearing uniform number 22
- 1:33:40Billy born May 16th, 1920 is 40 years old
- 1:33:52He's broken into the Major Leagues in 1941 with a white stock
- 1:34:00So this is the switch hitter batting left handed against Ryan Duren
- 1:34:04The threat and the pitch to Billy, high ball worn almost a wild pitch
- 1:34:08Bowen is holding first base against Hanson
- 1:34:12Boyer is in it third
- 1:34:18Billy is a fierce competitor and he has split in a second base against me many times
- 1:34:22Knock me strong
- 1:34:24Play hard, hard and plain
- 1:34:26Here's the stretch
- 1:34:28The pitch, inside ball 2, 2 and nothing
- 1:34:32And going down to the bullpen
- 1:34:34We have some action
- 1:34:38Duke Marsh is opening down there
- 1:34:42Jim Hagan has been put on the active list for the Yankees
- 1:34:46He has been the catching coach
- 1:34:56Jim Hagan was one of the finest catchers in the big leagues
- 1:35:02Real fine receiver
- 1:35:04The man when he handled that staff of Feleper, Winsostea and Lemmon
- 1:35:10Over at Cleveland he did quite a job
- 1:35:12Four tough men to handle
- 1:35:18By 2 and nothing on Billy with Hanson leading off first
- 1:35:22Nobody else in the bottom of the sixth ball to ball lead 4-0
- 1:35:26Here's the stretch
- 1:35:28The pitch, strike ball, fastball down the middle
- 1:35:30Two balls, one strike
- 1:35:38And Charlie Berry is telling one of the young photographers to move back
- 1:35:40He's only about 10 feet from home plate
- 1:35:42And if Billy could ever foul one off the end of his bat
- 1:35:44He could really hurt that youngster
- 1:35:46And he was in a dangerous spot
- 1:35:50Now he moves way down by the third base coaching block
- 1:35:54Better off getting a telephoto lens and getting down the left field corner
- 1:36:00All right, Hanson with a good size lead off first
- 1:36:04The pitch, the pitch, foul pitch held by Blanket strike 2, 2 and 2
- 1:36:18On deck the second base coach is going to be the Yankees
- 1:36:22On deck the second baseman Mark Greedy
- 1:36:30Two balls, two strikes
- 1:36:38Here's the stretch and the endurance steps off the rubber
- 1:36:42And yelling ball up again
- 1:36:44And endurance steps once again
- 1:36:48And endurance steps once again
- 1:36:50There he goes, he's got a good jump to throw to second base
- 1:36:54And he's going to be in there
- 1:36:56Why did he get a running jump on Ryan Duren?
- 1:37:02He was bouncing up and down off first base
- 1:37:06And then he took off just after Duren took his last look at first base
- 1:37:10The shoulder base for Hanson, only his second of the year
- 1:37:14And a pitch was lined at the 3-2 count on Jay Philly
- 1:37:18Nobody else
- 1:37:28Ready for the tail of Prince of Philly
- 1:37:30Here it is and he's leading at the strike 3
- 1:37:34Philly strikes out, here's Mark Greedy, who's single
- 1:37:40And Hanson on fourth play, driving in a run on a fourth inning
- 1:37:44And here's the stretch by Duren
- 1:37:48One out, Hanson down at second base
- 1:37:56Here's the stretch by Duren
- 1:38:00It's the greeting, Frank wanted, women are missing
- 1:38:04Boy, he's going after that ball
- 1:38:06And he's going to be in there
- 1:38:08And he's going to be in there
- 1:38:10And he's going to be in there
- 1:38:12And he's going to be in there
- 1:38:14And he's going to be in there
- 1:38:16And he's going to be in there
- 1:38:18And he's going to be in there
- 1:38:20And he's going to be in there
- 1:38:22That's right, and going to miss
- 1:38:24And boy, he's going after that ball with fire
- 1:38:28Looks like Dean Stevens is lifting up down in the Baltimore bullpen
- 1:38:34Stephen, who throws right-handed, bats left-handed
- 1:39:06Maas rating. Ryan Durham and release of whitey four with the first five in is giving up six
- 1:39:10and four runs. That's the new ball from Charlie Barry the Played On Five.
- 1:40:10The bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:40:23And now Casey Stang will move the infield in on the edge of the infield there for a possible play at the plate.
- 1:40:30Here's the wind up. Strike three. He's got the first ball right down the middle.
- 1:40:40Maas rating is fall out on strike for during second strike out.
- 1:40:45And that'll bring up Milt Pantus who's been up twice struck out both times.
- 1:41:09And now Durham wants for it to play in at third and Milt Pantus starts to beat out a bunch.
- 1:41:31Here's the wind up.
- 1:41:39He's lost coming down the line.
- 1:41:42Durham takes that big slow wind up and that time at least he didn't bother to take a glance over at third base.
- 1:41:58Now he looks over there. Here's his wind up.
- 1:42:01Pantus is having some good cuts out there but he's not hitting the ball.
- 1:42:09Nothing in his shoe. It's too out.
- 1:42:17Durham taking time out to wipe his glasses.
- 1:42:24Put them back on.
- 1:42:28Jackie Brand is on deck.
- 1:42:40Here's the wind up. Strike three swinging.
- 1:42:45Third time in a row that Pantus has gone down a strike.
- 1:42:50Durham strikes out the side after walking Hanson lead off the inning.
- 1:42:54And for Baltimore no runs, no hits, no Yankees errors.
- 1:42:58One man left and the score at the end of sixth for the inning.
- 1:43:01Baltimore four runs, six hits, no errors. The Yankees no runs, one hit and no errors.
- 1:43:07On the scoreboard Washington defeated Boston in the first game of the Twineye Doublehead a five to one.
- 1:43:12Lee the winner, Sullivan the loser, Lemmon, Zoback and Ted Williams home in that game for Williams a 560 to this career.
- 1:43:19Washington won, Boston won at the end of one and a half of the second game, Ramos against Muffin.
- 1:43:24Detroit score two on the top of the first playing at Chicago.
- 1:43:28The National League of Milwaukee nothing since the end of one. Chicago nothing, St. Louis nothing at the end of one.
- 1:43:33Los Angeles and San Francisco starts later on. And Philadelphia and Pittsburgh not scheduled.
- 1:43:38And Melanin will be coming over here to the radio side to finish up right after we pause for station identification.
- 1:43:47On the right side, the bright side of your dial, this is Quality Modern Radio, 1460 WLKO Albany, New York.
- 1:43:56Hello there everybody, we're ready to move now into the seventh inning. We have some changes. Gene Stevens has gone to right field.
- 1:44:18And in center field, Jackie France, Woodingham, Maine to the left.
- 1:44:35Today Philly had hit for Jim Busby.
- 1:44:42Now we go into the seventh inning, four to nothing in favor of the Orioles. Top of the order, Tony Kuvek takes the strike fastball.
- 1:44:51Milt Pappas, pitching a brilliant ball game, gave up a base hit to Kuvek to start the game and has knocked off every Yankee since, including getting Maris drowning into a double play.
- 1:45:04There's a bounce of draft by Pettit with a total of first ten times.
- 1:45:12The pay to tenants is 44,518.
- 1:45:2218 men in a row retired by Pappas after giving a base hit, Kuvek to open the game.
- 1:45:33The police boyer is struck out and blind to left. The pitch is just outside for a ball.
- 1:45:48The right hander's next delivery, in there for a strike, one and one. Boyer, just used his ball.
- 1:46:03One ball, one strike, one out. Four to nothing Orioles in the seventh inning. Milt Pappas' delivery backs him away. Ball to good one.
- 1:46:25Two-one count on Klee Boyer. Pappas into the windup, in comes the pitch, point on line in the right field and it is in there for a base hit.
- 1:46:39Now Hoyt Wilhelm goes down to the bullpen.
- 1:46:45Ball Richards has depth and pitching and he's got plenty of the use in easy. Two balls, one strike, and the pitch is accidentally tapped toward the mound.
- 1:46:57They throw to first base, gets Maris. On the second goes Boyer. Maris is not swinging, he's pulling away from the plate.
- 1:47:05Ball both hands get to bat. And he's an easy out at first base. So it's two down, Boyer on second, here's Mantle out on a drag punt to reading in the second inning and struck out on the fifth.
- 1:47:22Four to nothing ball aboard in the seventh inning. Two out. Pappas into the stretch and the pitch to Mantle, in there for a strike.
- 1:47:36Ball hits the middle of the plate and is tailed away from it. No balls, one strike. Pappas working fast and the pitch is outside. Ball one, one and one.
- 1:47:54One and one count. Yankees have scored four runs in our last three ball games. This is the fourth. And the stretch.
- 1:48:07Next pitch is going on and one high in the air. Down to third base line. Now on the foul territory goes Brooks Robinson and he has it.
- 1:48:16And the side is retired. No runs, one hit, no errors and one left on. At the end of the sixth and a half inning the score remains Baltimore four and New York nothing.
- 1:48:31You know I'm sure you've heard the expression that's in the bag. Well, you know what that means to everything. Uncle Dory okay.

- 1:49:19This is a fifth largest crowd they've ever had for an Oriole ballgame 44,518. Gives them their largest total attendance for any given season.
- 1:49:35As we go into the last half of the seventh inning it'll be the top of the Oriole order Jackie Brandt, Gene Woodling and Brooks Robinson. Tomorrow afternoon Art Dittmar will face Jack Fisher, our airtime 155.
- 1:49:50The Yankees will be home on Labor Day with the Boston Red Sox, double header and Tuesday afternoon.
- 1:50:15Jackie Brandt one for three. Ryan Durin pitches outside ball one. Brandt opened the game with a single, sixth second on a fly to right and short on Brooks Robinson's double into the right field corner.
- 1:50:33Ryan Durin took over for the beginning of the sixth inning after Whitey Ford has been removed for a pinch hitter. Ford gave up all the Oriole runs.
- 1:50:44Durin pitch in there. Strike one, one and one.
- 1:50:57One ball, one strike.
- 1:51:06The Orioles are slowly loosening up for New York. Steve Barber for the Orioles.
- 1:51:18One ball, one strike on Jackie Brandt.
- 1:51:22Ryan Durin pitch swung on, a ground ball hit out to second. McGoogle over to his right up with a throw to Skaren inside.
- 1:51:30And there's one away.
- 1:51:35Here's Gene Woodley, fly to right, struck out and grounded out to second.
- 1:51:47There's been 15 strikeouts in this game. Ford four, Durin three and Pappas eight. Out of 40 foot-high.
- 1:52:07Durin's pitch to Woodley is going inside, ball one. Gene batting 287.
- 1:52:22One ball, one strike.
- 1:52:27Now the pitch. It's over. Strike one, one and one.
- 1:52:46The change up pitch is outside and high. Ball two, 21. Bruce Robinson on deck.
- 1:53:06Two balls, one strike. Durin taking his time.
- 1:53:14Now the 21 pitch to Woodley. It's in there, strike two, two, two.
- 1:53:39Two balls, two strikes. One out, nobody on.
- 1:53:46Durin taking a lot of time. Goes to the wind up now. The 22 pitch to Woodley, swung on, little slow roller.
- 1:53:53And wait a minute, now Skaren has his steps on first.
- 1:53:57Durin was running over trying to get in front of it, but he never did.
- 1:54:01Hi, Ms. Ruth. Ms. Babe Ruth sitting over in the booth next door.
- 1:54:08Anyway, Durin never did get in front of the ball.
- 1:54:12Skaren now is right behind him, grabbing his steps off first.
- 1:54:19Two away. Here's Brooks Robinson, double to right, grounded short, fouled out through catchers.
- 1:54:30Fighting 302.
- 1:54:48Ryan Durin swings to the wind up. Round comes to the right arm, the pitch to swing on, lined out over second.
- 1:54:54And it's in there for a base hit. Marrows up the ball, welts him back into McSue.
- 1:55:01Robinson singles to right. Now Walt Grohbo, schedule a bat by Jim Denfield.
- 1:55:07Going to hit for Grohbo. Jim Denfield.
- 1:55:12Well hit for Walt Grohbo.
- 1:55:16As Paul Richards goes to the left hand hitter, with Durin in there now.
- 1:55:20Jim Denfield batting 294.
- 1:55:2620 homers and 84 runs planted in.
- 1:55:33One of three Orioles in the running for rookie of the year honors.
- 1:55:39Hanson, Breeding and Denfield.
- 1:55:44The right hand batter steps in. Brooks Robinson on first with two out in the seventh inning.
- 1:55:51Four to nothing, Baltimore.
- 1:55:55Dredged by Durin.
- 1:55:59And the pitch. Outside ball one.
- 1:56:05Triandos on deck.
- 1:56:24Again the stretch by Durin. Brooks Robinson widening his lead off first. An easy toss over to first Robinson's back.
- 1:56:39One ball, no strikes.
- 1:56:43Again the stretch. Robinson leads away. Here's the pitch. Backs the hitter away. Ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:56:58Orioles are on four in a row. Yankees have taken four in a row from Baltimore.
- 1:57:08Orioles leading four to nothing though right now. At the last of the seventh. Two outs. Robinson on first with two nothing count on Jim Denfield batting for Walt Ropo.
- 1:57:19Ryan Durin's pitch on its way. Swung on his miss. Strike one, two and one.
- 1:57:35Two balls, one strike.
- 1:57:39Two balls, one strike. Stretch by Durin. Brooks Robinson leads away. And the pitch.
- 1:57:45Then therefore a strike, two-two. And that time Robinson wasn't going and Blanchard dropped the ball.
- 1:57:52A two-two count.
- 1:58:02That always happens that way when you're not looking for a tack. There's one coming along.
- 1:58:08Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:58:13Two outs, four to nothing Orioles. Seven-setting Robinson gets back as the throw goes over from Durin.
- 1:58:25Robinson again with a good lead. Wide in the end. A stretch. He looks like he's about to go. Then Durin steps off again.
- 1:58:32And the crowd's getting a kick out of the little side play.
- 1:58:38Robinson again with a stretch. Robinson gets off. Further, further, further, further. There he goes. And the pitch is bowled off.
- 1:58:56Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 1:59:04And the play for the Orioles. It's the Sutton Funnings.
- 1:59:16Two-two count.
- 1:59:22Once again, Brooks Robinson leads away. Stretch by Durin. And the pitch. It's low, ball three, three and two.
- 1:59:32Now Robinson will have to go.
- 1:59:39Ralph Perry walking down to the bullpen. Perry has been loosening up. Moss was for four.
- 1:59:49Brooks Robinson will be traveling two ways. Stretch by Durin.
