- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talking Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: Tristan, I wish more happened in college football.
- 0:52SPEAKER_05: It's been very boring this week.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this has been a pretty mundane season.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: Here we are coming to the close.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: The usual suspects are in the playoffs, and not much else is going on, I would say, outside of that.
- 1:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, except for a lot.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: A lot is a lot going on uh in college football.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: Uh coaches are going different places.
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: Uh Oklahoma Sooner fans are upset.
- 1:16SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech fans are enjoying the fact that we're in a bowl game.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, we'll get to everything during this, including some basketball stuff and uh a nice volleyball update.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: Uh, first time in 20 years, Texas Tech volleyball making the NCAA tournament.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: That's big time, but we'll get to that.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: Um, let's start coaching carousel because uh apparently, and we got the news today, Sonny Cumbee uh is not going to be returning at Texas Tech as the offensive coordinator.
- 1:44SPEAKER_05: It looks like he's going to be taking a head coaching job with Louisiana Tech, um, which is awesome for him.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: Um, first and foremost.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: Sonny Cumby is a great dude.
- 1:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, there's not a lot of people that are more deserving for an opportunity at being a head coach than him.
- 2:00SPEAKER_05: Uh, but it does suck for us now because we need to find a new offensive coordinator.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: I like how you started with let's start with some coaching carousel news.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Sonny Cumbee's going to Louisiana tech.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Clearly at the top of the next one.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: The biggest news, um, the biggest football the offseason is focused on Rustin, Louisiana.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, Sunday interim interim coach and offensive coordinator.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: Sonny Cumbee goes to Rustin, uh Louisiana for Louisiana Tech for the head coaching job.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: But no, man, you seriously, you're so right.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: It's mixed feelings, but mostly overwhelmingly positive.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: It's just the only things we're just kind of bummed out because it was announced that he was going to stay at Texas Tech as the offensive coordinator.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: And watching this Baylor game, you're like, it gets kind of excited for the future because he really worked with what we had, and it wasn't much in that game.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: And we really put some points on the board against a good Baylor defense.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: We kept it tight the entire game, man.
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: But dude, you said it, you said it yourself, and I'm gonna be a huge fan of the Bulldogs down in Louisiana.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, and it's it's the man's chasing his dream.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Obviously, he loved being a Texas Tech, but offensive coordinators just that you're a coordinator, you're not the head coach, it's probably not what he had in mind for the rest of his career.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad to see he's kicking off his his his head coaching uh career in the right direction.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: I think Louisiana uh tech is a great place to start.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's it's gonna be an easier conference in conference USA because that's going through a reshuffle.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: And it's there's a lot of talent to work with down there in Louisiana, plenty of kids that will want to play there, and of course, East Texas.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: So good for him, man.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: I'm so excited to see what he can do with that offense there and just really turn into a good conference USA program.
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you can tell he really uh, especially from these last you know, four games that he's actually been the interim here, uh, that he it's time for him to run his own program.
- 3:40SPEAKER_05: And I think he realizes that, and everybody else realizes that.
- 3:43SPEAKER_05: And so uh Louisiana Tech taking a shot at him, I think is a smart move.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: I think uh, you know, institute keeping the team together after such a tumultuous, you know, event that just took place with your your head coach being fired, and you know, you're kind of midweek and you don't know what to do.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: You got Oklahoma coming up and everything like that.
- 4:01SPEAKER_05: And he he's really rallied these guys together, uh, you know, with the pump jack mentality, instituting that into the program.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: He's rallied the fan base, you know, for the most part, I think.
- 4:11SPEAKER_05: Um, and even won a big game against Iowa State, a team we really didn't, you know, shouldn't have beat.
- 4:17SPEAKER_05: So um, and played it tight against Baylor.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: So uh I'm hype for him.
- 4:21SPEAKER_05: I think he'll do well over there.
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, but now, you know, we do quick quick question.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: Do you think he gets this job if he doesn't have that good uh pretty good interim run?
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, I don't think he's I don't think around Wells.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: You don't think he gets this position?
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: No, you think he's proven a head coach?
- 4:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think it's I think it's this is more about these last four games that he's actually been the head coach uh than it was about what he's done previously.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, I mean he's he's run a fine offense this season, uh, but really I think the leadership aspect of what Cumby has brought to the table since he's took taken over his interim is what attracted Louisiana Tech to get him.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: Two two more things.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, whenever I was watching the Baylor game, I was watching with my family over Thanksgiving break here.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Um, and one thing that I really noticed with Sonny Cumby is how much he genuinely cares while he's on the field.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: He seems to really genuinely care, genuinely care about this program and and the boys that are in it.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: And I think that's that's gonna translate really well as a head coach in his next position because he's gonna care like hell about those players because you can really see it in him.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: And and the second thing is for love of God, please let us keep the pump jack thing.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: Don't don't be like, I'm taking this Louisiana Tech instead.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: Please let us keep the pump jack.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: And I think he will, but I I'm just teasing mostly, but uh, but not really.
- 5:39SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, I mean, how can you take the pump jack thing out of West Texas?
- 5:42SPEAKER_05: You can't do that.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: You've already you've already established it here.
- 5:45SPEAKER_05: I think it's here to stay.
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, if you were to take it, I mean, you know, it's his thing, you know, he instituted it, so uh, but either way, we'll find a new shtick.
- 5:54SPEAKER_05: We always do if it's not, but uh can I say one more thing?
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Sure, go ahead as I keep adding on on things about Sunny Combi here and the most important coach in carousel news.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Um can I say that this is probably the best way for him to go?
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: Like this, oh yeah, he he's he's he was retained by the program after Matt Wells goes, he's promoted to interim head coach, and then he's hired on to stay here by the new head coach.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: That just shows how much uh people believe in him.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: And I love seeing him go on very positive terms.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: It's not like he was let go at the end of the year and he he kind of drifts out, but now he it's it's like Texas Tech will when that and Sonny Cumbe will always have that awesome relationship with an alumni, and that's just good to see.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: I just wanted to add that little emotional bit there, too.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: Sure, and I mean uh his story's not over here at Texas Tech.
- 6:43SPEAKER_05: He's left at one point and came back, you know, seven years later.
- 6:46SPEAKER_05: So uh we'll always appreciate Sonny Cumbe for what he brought to the team this year, and you know, every obviously everything he did as a player and as you know, an assistant coach and everything like that.
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: So uh, but since he's gone, we now have a vacancy right in the offensive coordinator position.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: Uh interim head coach position.
- 7:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, basically we have to have a guy to coach the ball game, and that's probably gonna be Keith Patterson.
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, in my eyes, I think that's really your only option here, unless he, you know, somehow gets hired on somewhere else.
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: But um let's talk about potential offensive coordinators for us, because I only have two really in mind.
- 7:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, I don't know about you, but uh, I know the Twitter sphere has been all over Zach Kitley as of late, uh, Western Kentucky's offensive coordinator, uh, the son of Wes Kitley, our track and field coach.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: Um, and he runs a high-powered, kind of an innovative new offensive scheme.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: He did it at Houston Baptist last year when they almost beat Tech in a game that for some reason I keep bringing up.
- 7:48SPEAKER_05: Um, and now he's doing it at Western Kentucky.
- 7:51SPEAKER_05: They're averaging close to like 42 points a game in their new conference.
- 7:55SPEAKER_05: I think they're first in their division in conference USA right now.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: So uh I think he would be a great option uh to bring on as an offensive coordinator, but he seems to be the popular choice.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's definitely the first thing that comes up, and you know, he has a lot of history at Texas Tech, and he's good friends with Cliff Kingsbury and Patrick Mahomes, and there's definitely that connection that'll always be there.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: And he's a really, really young guy, a very young talent, a very young mind.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: The guy's only about 30 years old, so he's definitely he might be a bit more of a project, but whenever you know, your youth doesn't always mean you're not experienced and you don't know what you're doing.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: Um, so it I think he's definitely someone we'll be looking at.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: I bet he gets interviewed, even.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: So I think it's definitely somebody to keep an eye on.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 8:37SPEAKER_05: Um, I think the only other one that I had, and I I haven't looked too far into it because it was just announced today about Sonny Cumbie.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: There haven't been a ton of rumors about replacing him yet, but uh, you got to think Graham Harrell might be up there for uh the potential offensive coordinator here at tech.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Um, now that Lincoln Riley is over at USC, uh, he's an offensive-minded guy.
- 8:58SPEAKER_05: I don't don't necessarily know if he's gonna keep Graham Harrell over there.
- 9:01SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, he could potentially be looking for a job.
- 9:05SPEAKER_05: And, you know, what better to come back to than his alma mater uh here at Texas Tech to run the offense.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a clear name that's gonna pop up again.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: You know, no matter when there's gonna be any sort of offensive-related vacancy or head coaching vacancy at Texas Tech, you know, Graham Harrell's gonna be brought up.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: He's the he's the he one of the biggest heroes in school history.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's it's hard to deny that.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: And you know, he's he's proven that he's played at the highest or coached at the highest level now.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: And like you said, who knows if Lincoln Riley's gonna keep him on?
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: I kind of doubt it.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: I feel like Lincoln Riley's gonna go ahead and just completely wipe clean and do what he wants there.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: So I I I think he's gonna be out there to be hired.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: I think he's gonna he's probably gonna have to find himself a new job, and maybe he'll be here at TechStech.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: I bet he'll also get interviewed.
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, maybe so.
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: I mean, when we were discussing after Wells got fired, you know, we had different candidates coming up for uh potentially head coaching OC roles.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: We talked about that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, and we talked about Lincoln Riley's brother Garrett, who is now moving to TCU with Sonny Dykes.
- 10:07SPEAKER_05: Um, he's gonna remain.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I believe he's all he's he's confirmed to be moving over to the TCU job with Sonny Dykes.
- 10:14SPEAKER_05: So uh not sure that's an option anymore.
- 10:17SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, there uh there could be a name that just comes out of the blue.
- 10:21SPEAKER_05: Maybe, maybe a uh another famous Texas high school coach that Joey Maguire knows that he wants to bring in, thinks his offense is unbelievable.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: So uh I'm gonna trust Joey Maguire with this.
- 10:31SPEAKER_05: You know, I think uh I think he made the right the right decision the first time with keeping Sonny Gumby on.
- 10:36SPEAKER_05: Uh so you know, I'll trust him with the second choice.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: I we're we're we're back to what our defensive coordinator is, they're both vacancies at this point, so it's just up to trusting Joey Maguire to do his job and be a head coach and hire the right guy.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: So because I mean we we brought in a new special uh special teams coordinator in Kenny Perry from SMU.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: Apparently, he's also a high school legend who knows uh uh Joey Maguire very well.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: I think they both coached at Cedar uh Cedar Hill.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: Um, so I think it's probably safe to assume that we're gonna see some more very heavy high school connections to the Texas sphere for both these positions because it kind of seems like that's gonna be the theme of this hire.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't disagree with that going that way.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: So I think that's probably what we're gonna be looking at.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: But it's gonna be fun to watch, man.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: It's exciting because I do not think we'll keep Patterson on.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: Definitely has not been confirmed.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: So I think we'll both we'll be looking for coordinators here at the very end of the season for both filling in both slots at the same time.
- 11:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: This definitely throws a wrench in it, though.
- 11:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, with Sonny leaving and trying to maneuver from that.
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, I'll trust Joey uh to get this done.
- 11:41SPEAKER_05: We also retained um the only retained uh coach as of now is DeAndre Smith, the running back's coach.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: And you gotta think there's a reason for that.
- 11:51SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, him being the dad of of one of our current uh quarterbacks, Donovan Smith.
- 11:56SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, you got to think that's probably the reason he's brought, not that he hasn't done a good job.
- 12:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think he's actually done a terrific job with our running backs, especially the you look at the development of Taj Brooks and how he's really uh been awesome this year.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh you got to give a lot of credit to DeAndre Smith for that.
- 12:13SPEAKER_05: You know, he's brought in a really a top running back recruit every single year uh to this program, uh, with Cameron Valdez being uh a redshirt freshman this year.
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, I believe he redshirt.
- 12:24SPEAKER_05: If he didn't, you know, I could be wrong there, but a true freshman at that uh in Cameron Valdez.
- 12:28SPEAKER_05: And we get we have another one lined up for next year.
- 12:30SPEAKER_05: I think he's a four-star as well.
- 12:32SPEAKER_05: So he's done a great job here.
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: There would be no reason um to get rid of DeAndre Smith at this point.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: So I'm glad uh we're keeping him on, but he seems to be the only one that we're keeping on from this from this coaching staff.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, one of the one of the biggest reasons why I was really excited about keeping Sonny Cumbie on was because you keep that continuity, you keep that familiarity, you keep that uh reliability amongst the current players of having a main coach on staff from the last guy.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: Um, so and I thought that would really hinder the amount of players who would want to transfer out um because they want to stay and play for Sonny Cumby, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: And then whenever you include DeAndre Smith, that makes it even more so.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: But DeAndre Smith is just a positions coach, he's not exactly a full-blown, I oversee this whole side of the ball guy.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: So I am a little nervous that perhaps this leads to people really taking a peek at that portal.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: No one's done it yet, surprisingly.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's I'm sure we'll see one or two guys.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: But I really do hope we keep our key pieces in.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: I thought Cummy would be a great part about that.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: But hopefully, Joe McGuire can really sell his love to his boys and and hopefully we can really hold on to what we have and just build off of the foundation that's there.
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I was a little surprised we didn't keep on uh Falani uh over there, the receiver's coach.
- 13:44SPEAKER_05: I'm a little surprised we didn't keep on um uh Derek Jones, uh Coach Cheetah, a little bit, but it seems like those guys are gone.
- 13:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, but overall, I think it's I think it's good that we're losing some of these guys.
- 13:56SPEAKER_05: Uh you know, like uh Coach Farmer with the offensive line.
- 13:59SPEAKER_05: I think you know he he messed up a lot this year.
- 14:01SPEAKER_05: Patterson, obviously.
- 14:03SPEAKER_05: I think it's good that we move on from him and Tom Ridal with the special teams.
- 14:07SPEAKER_05: You know, I think it's good that we're moving on from some of these guys, uh, but I was a little surprised we didn't keep on more.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, but I guess Joey's got guys in mind, so you know, I'll again I'll I'll trust Joey with this decision.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, the expectation is whenever you hire a new guy is you're not just hiring a new head football coach, you're hiring a new staff.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: So this was bound to happen, and it's not always just you know, maybe it's that so much tech wants to keep you.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: It's maybe these guys are ready to move out too.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: So move on to something else.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: Maybe they're looking to get a better position, like maybe they want a coordinator position and stuff somewhere else.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's not all just on us, but uh it's it it makes me a little more excited about the future than if we kept more of them on.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: So it's time to just cut that cord because it wasn't working for us.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, these past seasons have been ones to forget.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: So the Matt Wells era unfortunately is one to completely forget.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: So I I'm okay with moving on for the majority of the guys that were contributing to that.
- 15:00SPEAKER_05: We did we did keep some guys from the player developmental side and the recruiting side of things that were already on staff, we're retaining uh guys like Sammy Morris, uh, who is the director of uh or the associate director of player development for Texas Tech.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're keeping on Kate Sheeley, who is the director of recruiting operations.
- 15:21SPEAKER_05: Uh, keep it on Antonio Hoffman, who's the associate AD of football administration.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: So we're keeping some of the staff in place, but uh, and you can tell Joey is really emphasizing recruiting.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: As you can, if you follow his Twitter, you know, he's been to about uh a hundred different high schools in the past two days uh around West Texas and Oklahoma.
- 15:40SPEAKER_05: So uh you gotta love that.
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: I love that he's posting all the different schools and uh all their logos and stuff, just showing you how much he's grinding with this and how many different places he's trying to hit because he wants to own the high school recruiting, and that's what he said, and he's already doing that.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: And it feels like we're there with him.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: It's so fun to just kind of feel like we're there at the high schools with him, you know, and and and being on the trips with him.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: It just shows how hard he's working, which is awesome.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: It's just something we're not used to.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: I love the the being the visualization of it and being so open, open with the public with it.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: And you know, all we also brought in Quentin Jordan from Baylor.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: Uh Joey McGuire said uh recently that you know, as the season comes to a close, a lot of young guys from Baylor are gonna come on over.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: Actually, David Aranda said this that a lot of the young guys are gonna go over to Texas Tech.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: And uh, so it's cool to see the guys that he's obviously worked with at Baylor and made such a Big 12 championship playing team in Baylor uh come over to Texas Tech.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: So it's great to see that we're getting that kind of talent and especially the young talent that it still has potential to grow.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: So great to see the staff coming together.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: I'm really excited to see how it really comes to a head at the end here.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's just nothing but positivity right now and optimism.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: It's awesome.
- 16:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Josh Puckbeiner being another one of those coaches he's taken over from Baylor as well.
- 16:52SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, yeah, I think that's great.
- 16:54SPEAKER_05: I think he's I think it's good that we're stealing some uh some guys from that Baylor staff because obviously they know a winning program and they know uh what it takes to kind of turn around a program.
- 17:04SPEAKER_05: So uh bring as many of those Baylor guys as you possibly can, Joey.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: I'm all for it.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: Um, let's talk some other um coaching carousel.
- 17:11SPEAKER_05: I know we hit you know the top one, what everybody's talking about in Sonny Cumbie to Louisiana Tech, but um lots happened, lots happened.
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: Uh Lincoln Riley leaving uh Oklahoma for the USC job.
- 17:24SPEAKER_05: Did you see that coming at all?
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: Uh this is the first time hearing about this.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: This is this is crazy.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: No, I'm just kidding.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: No, dude, I I I did not see that coming.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: I really didn't.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: I didn't think he was gonna leave OU.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: I didn't see any reason why he would.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: He didn't appear to be unhappy at all.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if it necessarily has anything to do with all that, but you know, as a proud Red Raider, I'm proud of our fellow Red Raider, you know, making big moves in the college landscape.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: We could finally cheer for the guy, so yeah, for real.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: I you know this is earth-shattering, yeah.
- 17:54SPEAKER_05: It was it definitely changed the entire landscape of of college football.
- 17:58SPEAKER_05: It was a hire that can't kind of came out of the blue.
- 18:00SPEAKER_05: And I mean, he was linked to the LSU job for so long, and you're like, well, you know, he doesn't seem to be really interested.
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: And then he outward said after the after the bedlam game that he was not gonna be the head coach at LSU, and then here it is.
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: I think eight hours after that, he was announced as the USC head coach.
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: So we were all just mind-blown.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: Um, and it looks like he's gonna bring Alex Crinch with him over there.
- 18:21SPEAKER_05: So Oklahoma's gonna be hurting a little bit.
- 18:23SPEAKER_05: I think they're definitely gonna be fallen after this.
- 18:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, Lincoln Riley's a fantastic coach.
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: He has uh really they just kind of transitioned easily from Bob Stoops to Lincoln Riley.
- 18:34SPEAKER_05: Now, this is the first time they're kind of in a coaching search in a long time for Oklahoma.
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: So uh this is a big deal, I think.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's definitely gonna lead to Oklahoma being worse.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, OU is gonna hemorrhage for a while.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: They're gonna they're gonna kind of drop back to they're they're not gonna be great anymore, they're probably gonna be just good, you know.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: They're still OU, they'll still like you know, I you know, bring in the talent, bringing probably bringing some pretty good coaches, but they're gonna hurt for a while.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: And this this last year, these last couple of years in the Big 12 are probably gonna hurt, and obviously going into the SEC under just such you know, without your you know, high accolade coach that you had, it's gonna be troubling.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: And it's it's kind of shows that these decisions have consequences because I think Lincoln Riley's making the right move here.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: I think it was genius, and he's getting absolutely freaking paid to do so.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: Oh god, yeah.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: So it and I I think I think it was brilliant.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: I think he made a really smart move here by going to USC, one of the premier uh college football programs in the college football.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, OU is too, but OU's about to get lost in the sauce.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: OU is gonna about to be like no different from anyone else in the SEC.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Um, and while USC is the king of the West Coast, so he can go over there and just build something amazing over there, be in the playoff to talk every single season and plow through the Pac-12 without having to worry about a Nick Saban every year or a Kirby Smart's Georgia or whatever the heck, LSU or you know, Kimmy, we'll talk about that in a second, LSUs and stuff.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Um, so I think this was smart.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: I and I think he really was looking out for his best interest.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: And uh, I I think he's gonna come out.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: I come out of this looking pretty dang good.
- 20:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's definitely cemented a lot more.
- 20:08SPEAKER_05: And dude, I didn't realize he's still 38.
- 20:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Lincoln Riley is still so young.
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: Uh, and for him to really make this move at this time, I think is smart, just like you said, you know, um, you're going into a much uh really, really tough conference where you have to deal with a lot of blue bloods and a lot of uh fan bases that want you to win.
- 20:29SPEAKER_05: And uh while I think Oklahoma is gonna do much better in the SEC than Texas is, I think it's gonna be kind of a shock to a lot of their fans that they're not gonna be winning a lot as much as they did in the Big 12.
- 20:41SPEAKER_05: Um, so yeah, let's let's let's move on to one of those SEC teams, LSU.
- 20:47SPEAKER_05: Uh take this came out of nowhere.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: Like Riley was, you know, he was rumored to go to bigger to other jobs, but Brian Kelly, I didn't see him leaving Notre Dame ever.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: And now LSU uh gave him the bag uh to come on down to Baton Rouge and coach the tigers.
- 21:09SPEAKER_05: That was that was a shock.
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: This this one doesn't make a lot of sense to me, though.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, I know I know Brian Kelly is an amazing coach.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: He's he he wins like crazy at Notre Dame, but does he make a lot of sense in the SEC?
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: Does he make a lot of sense in Louisiana?
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: I I just I don't know.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: It it's because it kind of feels like none of the LSU fans are that hyped about this.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: Obviously, some of them are just excited, you know, to bring it a big name or you know, and and move on from the Ed Orgeron era, but this this just doesn't feel like a fit.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: And I know that's just that's a totally non equitable logical thing to say.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's a this is totally just an emotional I eye test sort of deal.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: But I I don't know, man.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Like, is is Brian Kelly gonna beat Nick Saban?
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: I don't think so.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: Is he gonna is I just kind of feels like another Jimbo Fisher hire.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, Jimbo is a pretty good hire, but Jimbo's finishing this year with eight wins.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Because you know, Woodward did the same higher.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: He he swung with an absolute bag of a bat, bringing in a big name for almost just the sake of a big name.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: And I just I don't know.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: I feel like Billy Napier would have been the better move.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: I think Blood made the smarter decision here, but for a probably much cheaper.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: So I I don't know.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: This one feels bizarre to me.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: This doesn't feel right.
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: What would I mean what would scare me the most if I'm an LSU fan is the paycheck, first off, because he's getting, I think there's rumors of 15 million dollars a year, which would by far uh make him the highest paid coach in college football.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: Uh which you know, I know LSU can afford that kind of money, but you know, a 10-year deal too.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: So he's hooked on for the long term uh now in Baton Rouge, and that's just such a competitive conference.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, and he's old, but like are those LSU fans are not gonna be happy with an eight or nine win season, they're not with this hire, and you kind of have to be a playoff contender every single year, which LSU has not been in in their history.
- 23:10SPEAKER_05: I know they've won championships in the past, in the recent past, too.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: But look outside.
- 23:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, you've seen it with Les Miles, he goes and wins a championship and then they have a couple down years.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: Ed O'Gron wins a championship, they have a couple down years.
- 23:22SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're not gonna be allowed to have these down years anymore.
- 23:25SPEAKER_05: They literally they want a savan, and I don't know if Brian Kelly's saving, I don't think he is.
- 23:31SPEAKER_05: So uh for and they're definitely paying him like he's saving.
- 23:35SPEAKER_05: So uh it is I think I think Woodward uh the AD is just a mistake uh in general.
- 23:41SPEAKER_05: I think he was a mistake at AM.
- 23:43SPEAKER_05: I think the Jimbo hire, you know, talk about all you want, but they are eight and four after they're after they paid him all that money and they record as Kevin Sumlin at this point in his career.
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's what they made fun of Kevin Sumlin for all those years was that AM was eight and four, they couldn't get better than eight and four.
- 23:58SPEAKER_05: Well, here they are with a new coach, and they're eight and four, and they're paying him a whole lot more than they paid Sumlin.
- 24:03SPEAKER_05: And so uh, you know, Woodward, you've seen it from every stop that he's been at.
- 24:08SPEAKER_05: He goes after the name.
- 24:09SPEAKER_05: I mean, even when he got to LSU, he got Kim Moki from Baylor, you know, the most famous women's basketball coach to come over there for a ton of money.
- 24:16SPEAKER_05: So I I don't know if the name's gonna do it.
- 24:19SPEAKER_05: I don't think I don't think it's a smart decision by LSU.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, like you, I was very confused why they didn't want Napier.
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: You know, he's young, he's been in the SEC, he's coached under Saban, he knows he knows Louisiana, he's been at UL.
- 24:34SPEAKER_05: I mean, I wins at ULL.
- 24:37SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't know why they wouldn't do that, but I well now I do know why they wouldn't do that because it's not the name that Brian Kelly is.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: I I think I know why they uh you know LSU fans and it would work dinner on Brian uh Billy Napier is because he was at ULL.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: I think it's because I we don't want to get the guy from the little program here in the state, you know.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: I I feel like it's kind of a bit of an ego pride sort of thing.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: I think that's really what pushed him over.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: And obviously he's not the big name, like you said, but I feel like him being in Louisiana is a part of it because I do think Florida made the bigger hire, I mean the better hire.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: Uh, so and dude, I'm I'm I'm with you.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: And I think what fans don't realize, I mean, what does Woodward say to these boosters to give them their entire bank accounts to do this?
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: Because it's insane.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: Um, is even you know, AM fans might be slightly more patient than LSU fans, but what do they do if he's not the guy?
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: What if he's winning seven, eight games every year because you know he has to go up against Saban, Jimbo Fisher, and these other really good coaches, you know, and Kirby Smart.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: What is what happens in three years if he's still winning only eight games?
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: You can't just fire a man that's on a a hundred million plus contract.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: You can't.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: I don't care how much money you have.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Like that's that's the point, is he's locked in now.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: So I I feel like this he's probably not gonna drive the program into the ground at all, but I don't think he's gonna lift it up much more than that orgeron was.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: But you know, maybe maybe he is the great hirepin, you know, and we don't we don't know enough about it, obviously.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: But it's just it's it's a bizarre move to me.
- 26:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's definitely crazy.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: It's definitely kind of the same thing that North Carolina basketball did after Roy Williams left this offseason.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: They hired um uh oh, what's the guy Hubert Davis over there?
- 26:17SPEAKER_05: He's a North Carolina guy, but they had Wes Miller, who was at UNC Greensboro, who's now at Cincinnati and he's doing really well at Cincinnati.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's just like it's the little the little brother program or whatever in the state that you don't want to hire from, and that's a ridiculous way of going at it, in my opinion.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: Obviously, we we did not feel that way at all because Jeff Traylor was our number one, and I think he was our number one for our athletic department, too.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: So it's just I'm glad that we're not too proud to say something like that.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: Uh because it can ruin a program.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't know why you would be too good for something like that.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, um, it's good to see a program like Florida doesn't think so.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: Um, but okay, so who do you think won in quotation marks?
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: Who got the better into the deal?
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: USC with Lincoln Riley or or or Brian Kelly at LSU?
- 27:03SPEAKER_05: Joey McGuire to Texas Tech.
- 27:04SPEAKER_05: No, yeah, absolutely.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: No, I think USC got the better, uh, the better hire here with Lincoln Riley.
- 27:12SPEAKER_05: He's younger, uh, he's gonna, he's in a weaker conference that he can absolutely dominate at.
- 27:18SPEAKER_05: He's a great recruiter in one of the biggest recruiting hotbeds in the entire nation.
- 27:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, yeah, I think stealing Lincoln Riley away from Oklahoma is and for less money.
- 27:28SPEAKER_05: I know it's still a huge paycheck, what they're both getting paid, but it's not$15 million a year, what Brian Kelly's making.
- 27:35SPEAKER_05: So uh yeah, I think clearly uh Lincoln Riley getting him over to USC was the better hire here.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: Agree fully.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, and you're hiring a young man, you're you're hiring a guy like about half the age of Brian Kelly.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: You know, he's got plenty of he's got plenty of potential.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: He's probably not fully realized it with all this with with the experience he still has the gain.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: With Brian Kelly, you know what you're getting.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: I don't think in that that 62, however he is, year old man is gonna learn much more about the game.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: So he's probably learned what he's learned.
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: And I I and like you said, I think LA with Lincoln Riley is just be so much more dangerous than Baton Rouge with Brian Kelly.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: That just doesn't have any sexiness to it.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: Lincoln Riley, I uh LA does to me.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: So I'm with you.
- 28:14SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 28:15SPEAKER_05: Um, Sonny Dykes going to TCU.
- 28:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, that was another coaching splash that came uh just under like not very exciting.
- 28:25SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, I know we were talking about Sonny Dykes the entire offseason, uh, or at least since Matt Wells was uh fired as potentially replacing Matt Wells as the Texas tech head coach, but uh you know it just kind of felt like TCU had to settle for him there at the end.
- 28:41SPEAKER_05: You know, he's having kind of a kind of a tailspin of a of an ender here with SMU to end this season.
- 28:47SPEAKER_05: Um, and then you know, I I I don't know.
- 28:50SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 28:50SPEAKER_05: I think I think TCU, I think he's a good coach, and I think he's actually gonna do pretty well at TCU.
- 28:55SPEAKER_05: But how you know, how well are they gonna do?
- 28:58SPEAKER_05: Are they really gonna be a uh competitive in the new Big 12?
- 29:01SPEAKER_05: I I don't really know.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's exciting at all for them.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: And but at the same time, I feel like they went to this coaching search not knowing what they wanted whatsoever.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like it just feel like they wanted to move on for Gary Patterson so desperately, which kind of confuses me.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, the man did so much for your program.
- 29:19SPEAKER_05: Major a lot of these, a lot of these programs that decided to fire their coach are confusing me.
- 29:24SPEAKER_05: Florida, confusing LSU was even confusing.
- 29:27SPEAKER_05: I know O'Giron, like these last couple seasons have been bad, but man, he was like 45 and 15 against top 25 opponents during his tenure at LSU.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't know how you just move on from a guy like that, just like after a year and a half after winning a national championship, but exactly.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: And and TCU did even more for TCU than Ed Orgeron did for LSU.
- 29:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's just well, I don't know.
- 29:52SPEAKER_05: And to be like, it's like winning a national championship versus like I don't know.
- 29:56SPEAKER_05: I guess that's a that's a debate.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: Uh uh a school like TCU probably isn't going to win the national championship.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: Well, a national championship shouldn't be the only way you judge how good a coach was.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: So and and he he moved them into the Big 12.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Sure, it took some help, but he got them there.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's right.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: And um, what I was what I was saying was it's just it doesn't seem like this was the right year to fire your head coach because it doesn't seem like TCU would have had a great pick of candidates to go for.
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: Maybe they were had their eye on a guy like Jeff Trailer as well, but UTSA proved that they were gonna step up into the plate, and maybe that kind of shattered them as well.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: And and I'm not gonna lie, Dykes was on our list too, but yeah, it looked but we had a mission of who we wanted, and Joey Maguire fit the bill from the comp from the conference when we fired Wells.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Like it's not like we changed our tune, it was no, this was exactly what we were looking for.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: It was either Jeff Trailer or a Joey Maguire.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: I think Dykes was kind of falling further and further back on our list as the season went on and as the search went on.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: Um, so I'm with you.
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: I I don't think this excites their fan base very much.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: I think he I don't know if he does much better than Gary Patterson did there.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: I say that, but Gary Patterson won them a Big 12 championship, and he he kept them winning uh six to nine win seasons every year.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: And I think as a TCU fan, you're pretty happy with that.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm just surprised that they they dumped their best, their greatest coach of all time like that.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: I would have thought you would have held on to him until you really knew what you're gonna do.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: So uh not exciting, and but um that's good for us, man.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: I would I'm okay with TCU taking a step back for Texas Tech to fill that spot here in Texas again.
- 31:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, I will say the the biggest winners, and this is this coaching deal is far from over in college football.
- 31:33SPEAKER_05: I mean, there's still some big uh big head coaching roles to be filled in Oklahoma and Notre Dame, but man, Baylor, Cincinnati, and Iowa State are kind of making it out like bandits right now.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: Uh Baylor, it looks like they're gonna keep Aranda.
- 31:49SPEAKER_05: I know there's already been uh kind of an agreement.
- 31:52SPEAKER_05: I don't know if it's an agreement, but they there's definitely been rumors that Aranda wants to stay uh over there in Waco, which I mean, hell, they're in the Big 12 championship right now.
- 32:00SPEAKER_05: Why wouldn't you?
- 32:01SPEAKER_05: You know, if you if you like Waco, if you like, you know, that that gig, why wouldn't you?
- 32:05SPEAKER_05: So right um Baylor's getting yeah, I mean I'm not saying Baylor's a bad gig.
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm just saying, uh, you know, I was I was thinking he might have been up for the LSU job, but apparently, you know, Woodward, that's yeah, uh Randah's too small of a name.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: All right, even though Randa's probably gonna be uh the better coach here, you know, he's a young man and he's he turned that Baylor team around in two years.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, again, it just shows like the pride and ego that can really come into play in a sport like college, uh college football.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: And it seems like Woodward is a very egotistic guy.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't know him personally, but to to feel the need to only go for these names just kind of speaks that you know, is it sounds more like flash than sustenance for sure, for sure.
- 32:45SPEAKER_05: So uh Iowa State, obviously, they're kind of uh like uh maybe Campbell, you know.
- 32:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, now that Notre Dame's open, I know that Campbell's a Midwest guy, he's always been in that area.
- 32:57SPEAKER_05: Notre Dame's right there.
- 32:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, so uh he hasn't left yet, which you know, good for Iowa State.
- 33:03SPEAKER_05: I hope they keep Campbell, but uh, you know, they're they're starting to run low on options here, and uh same with Cincinnati and Luke Fickle.
- 33:10SPEAKER_05: So um, even though it looks uh, I know there are rumors that Fickle was looking working on a contract extension with Cincinnati as well, but that hasn't come to fruition yet.
- 33:19SPEAKER_05: Neither is the Aranda deal yet.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: So I don't know.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: I I think what saves I think Luke Fickle stays at Cincinnati because they're still in the playoff hunt.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Because I don't think he leaves that team to go to the you know, get ahead of the early signing period at Notre Dame.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: Like, who the heck does that?
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: You're about to be you're on the cusp of taking the first G5 team to the playoff.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: By the way, Notre Dame can still make the playoffs.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: I know, and that's gonna be crazier.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: But I guess that just whenever you get uh a wave of stupid, freaky check like that in your face, it's hard to turn it away.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: And it was an outside chance that Notre Dame makes it at this point.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: It's true.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Um, Cincinnati's in it right now, they're in the top four, and they're they if they they all they have to do is beat Houston and they're in.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: If they're not, it's an absolute sham, an absolute corruption if they're not in.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: So, but that's what I'm saying.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: I think Luke Fickle stays because you know, he there's no chance he leaves the season early right now, in my opinion.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: So, and and now he's got he's got his program looking to go to a power five conference soon.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: So I think he's set up pretty well.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: I'd be more nervous as an Iowa State fan.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: You know, we'll here we are with Matt Campbell, who's won seven games this season, and you know, we're obviously they're just looking forward to their bowl, they're not looking forward to any playoff hopes like they kind of thought they would, or big 12 championships hopes that they thought they might they have, but I think Notre Dame's probably gonna go for Campbell really hard.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: If not Notre Dame, maybe even OEU.
- 34:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I mean, uh if you're Matt Campbell, you're losing a lot from this Iowa State team that was underwhelming this year.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, but you had the talent to this was the year.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: This was the year, and it didn't work out for him.
- 34:49SPEAKER_05: And I, you know, I'm not saying that's like this is the best Iowa State can get, but I I am saying this is the most talented team they've had, probably in their program's history, and you finish seven and five, and you know, you're gonna lose a ton of that talent.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: So that is how it goes sometimes, though, right?
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's true.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: Some some some stats on paper don't exactly always just translate year to year to year.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: Um, but I'm with you.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: It's uh Iowa State can't expect to be winning 10 wins nine wins a year, it's just not gonna happen at a program like Iowa State, and that's coming from a red raider fan.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: I don't expect that at Texas Tech either, so it's it's just an unfortunate reality.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: And I think a guy like Matt Campbell is probably uh you know good enough to make that step to a power powerhouse role.
- 35:33SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: Did you uh do you have anything else on the coaching carousel?
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: I didn't.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: We we ran out of a lot of breadth there, and it's these weren't even the only vacancies that got filled.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: There was other big schools that were filling it as well.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, Washington filled theirs as well.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: Um, Virginia Tech is filling it right now.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: So it was just this is probably the craziest proto offseason I've ever seen.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: This is like the craziest coaching carousel I've I've seen and as a fan.
- 35:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 35:57SPEAKER_05: The Lincoln Brian Kelly going to freaking LSU.
- 36:02SPEAKER_05: This is wild, dude.
- 36:03SPEAKER_05: Can we talk about definitely wild?
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: Can we talk about how smart Kirby Hokut was about all this?
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: You know, cutting bait early because the writing was on the wall that this was as good as it was gonna get under Matt Wells.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: Um, and getting ahead of it and hiring our guy within two weeks.
- 36:17SPEAKER_03: We're the first power five job to get filled, and one of the first jobs in general to get filled.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: So we completely avoided this absolute turmoil, and we've been recruiting uh our butts off since then.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: So I think we're coming out looking pretty dang good, all things considered.
- 36:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and now we're gonna have some Oklahoma recruits we could potentially get our hands on over here.
- 36:36SPEAKER_05: Uh at at Kobe McKinsey, please, from uh from Lubbock, please just stay home, stay home.
- 36:42SPEAKER_05: Come on, we would love to have you over here another another great linebacker, come on down.
- 36:47SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I I you know it's gonna be interesting.
- 36:50SPEAKER_05: I'm glad I'm glad Joey's here.
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: I'm glad we got our guy and we don't have to go through all this right now.
- 36:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, we are still you know looking for coordinators, which isn't the funnest thing in the world, but uh, like I said, we're gonna trust Joey McGuire with these hires.
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: And I'm really excited for this new era, especially with the way the Baylor game went.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, it could have gone a lot worse.
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: We were in the fight the whole time, and I'm sure we'll talk about it in a second.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: But that it's just there's a lot to look forward to right now, and it's a good time to be a tech fan, bad time to be a sooner fan, LMAO.
- 37:21SPEAKER_05: LMAO, finally, Oklahoma, you're mortal.
- 37:25SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma football has something bad go wrong.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: Good.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: They are really acting like this is the biggest personal betrayal they've ever experienced in their entire life.
- 37:34SPEAKER_03: Some of them really need to chill out.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, seriously.
- 37:38SPEAKER_05: Like they're I in my opinion, OU is gonna be fine.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: I don't know if they're gonna be OU, you know, what they've been, but they're definitely gonna hurt a little bit, but I don't think they're gonna fall all that much.
- 37:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, but we'll see who they hire and everything like that.
- 37:52SPEAKER_05: But uh, let's talk about the Baylor game.
- 37:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, because what a heartbreaker uh for this team and for Coach Cumby.
- 37:58SPEAKER_05: But you know, I was watching this uh not really expecting much, and they showed out, man.
- 38:05SPEAKER_05: They they performed Texas Tech.
- 38:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, it was a good, it was a good game to go out.
- 38:11SPEAKER_05: The Baylor's a good team, man.
- 38:12SPEAKER_05: Even when they're playing with their backup quarterback, they're a really good team.
- 38:15SPEAKER_05: And we had a shot there at the end.
- 38:17SPEAKER_05: Garabay finally, the the magic stinks.
- 38:20SPEAKER_05: He's human.
- 38:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he is.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: He's human.
- 38:22SPEAKER_05: 53-yard field goal, I believe.
- 38:24SPEAKER_05: That's a tough field goal, man.
- 38:25SPEAKER_05: That's I I don't care.
- 38:27SPEAKER_05: I don't care that he made the 62-yarder against Iowa State.
- 38:30SPEAKER_05: 53 yards is a tough field goal, and uh, you know, not many college kickers are gonna make that.
- 38:35SPEAKER_05: And you know, Garabay missed one, and it it stinks that it was uh at this time at the end of the game that could have tied it.
- 38:41SPEAKER_05: But uh man, I love the fight from our guys.
- 38:44SPEAKER_05: I like Donovan.
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: Uh he showed he showed much more than what he did in the Oklahoma State game.
- 38:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, had some touchdown passes.
- 38:50SPEAKER_05: So uh, and I really, you know, it it kind of sucks to to say now, but I really like Sunny Cumbey's play calling this game, and now he's gonna be gone.
- 38:58SPEAKER_05: But uh, I was I was happy with this game.
- 39:00SPEAKER_05: I was proud of our uh proud of Texas Tech.
- 39:02SPEAKER_05: They played a really good team, uh, really close.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, guys, this was number eight.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: Number eight, yeah.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: Playing in the Big 12 championship, possible playoff hopes, Baylor.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: So this is the losing by three points, is totally doable whenever a hacker team is injured and you're in the interim coach.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: So I think we played very well.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: I wasn't upset at all at the very end.
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: Obviously, it was just disappointing, like, ah, dang it, we could have had it.
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: Um, but like I said, the Jonathan Garbey was just a tie-in, so it was it was probably still doubtful we'd won it, would you win it in overtime?
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: But obviously, there's still that chance.
- 39:33SPEAKER_03: But like you said, I went into this not expecting much, and it was just very impressive to watch these guys never ever giving up because they could have gone in saying the season's over, they're a top 10 team.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: What are we fighting for anymore?
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: But they didn't feel like that way the entire game, they played their tails off, and it just this really made me excited for next season.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: So, and the bowl game, more importantly, coming up.
- 39:53SPEAKER_03: So there's there's still a lot to be excited about, and like you said, fun game, fun game against our our rivals in Waco.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I do hope they lose to the Pokes.
- 40:02SPEAKER_05: Yes, I hope Oklahoma State wins so they can get in the playoffs and have the Big 12 represent, even though you know the Pokes, uh, they're you know, they copy all of our stuff, but that's okay.
- 40:12SPEAKER_05: Indeed, that's okay.
- 40:13SPEAKER_05: You can have it this year.
- 40:14SPEAKER_05: Um, bowl predictions.
- 40:16SPEAKER_05: What do you think?
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna be, I think we're gonna be in the uh Liberty Bowl.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: I think we're gonna be playing a six and six SEC team.
- 40:22SPEAKER_03: I think we're probably I I for some reason my gut says Texas Tech versus LSU.
- 40:27SPEAKER_05: Dude, you know I would love that.
- 40:29SPEAKER_05: Being as I am in Baton Rouge right now.
- 40:32SPEAKER_05: I tweeted it out from the pods account.
- 40:33SPEAKER_05: I was like, please make it happen.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: LSU I would love it if it was LCU in the Liberty Bowl.
- 40:38SPEAKER_05: Any, I'll take any of those teams.
- 40:39SPEAKER_05: To be honest, there's what five of them, five, six and six SEC teams LSU, Auburn, South Carolina, Florida, and Missouri, all of which I would be really excited to play.
- 40:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, just because you know, the potential of actually beating one of those teams, you can say that forever.
- 40:55SPEAKER_05: You're like, Yeah, we beat LSU in the bowl game in 2021, whatever.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, but no, not all those teams are exactly the same.
- 41:03SPEAKER_03: The reason why I point out LSU specifically is because they're gonna be coachless, probably.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: Um, and we're coachless too.
- 41:11SPEAKER_05: Well, no, no, I no, I think I think O Geron's gonna coach the bowl game.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: Is he?
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: Okay, yeah, he's coaching the bowl game.
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: He's he's calling, he's been coaching, he's been on victory like victory road these last couple games, just kind of taking it all in.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: Still a bit of a still bit of a lame duck head coach, and we're gonna be probably interimless.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: So it's I I wanna I wanna I want to even the field as much as we can.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: And obviously, playing a team like LLC is beneficial because it's a regional sort of thing.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: You know, you're gonna we're recruiting Texas, LSU recruits Texas so heavily, so it would just be kind of nice to be able to have that on the board if we get that uh be like, see, we're moving in the right direction, come join us, um, rather than playing like a South Carolina, which just you know, we don't really we don't really recruit against them.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: So that's that's I'm not exactly saying we're getting all the players LSU is, but you get what I'm saying.
- 41:58SPEAKER_05: It would be fun being a Florida or an Auburn as well, yeah.
- 42:01SPEAKER_05: Uh and Mizu, you know, former Big 12.
- 42:04SPEAKER_05: So uh love to love to be.
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: Some of those have their coaches sentenced though and ready to go.
- 42:09SPEAKER_05: It's true, and we will probably have Keith Patterson coaching.
- 42:13SPEAKER_03: Like, I do not want to play Auburn, I don't want to play Missouri because they're probably gonna be much more prepared than we will be because they have they have the guys that they have, and you know what I'm saying.
- 42:22SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 42:23SPEAKER_05: Um, I think another option is the guaranteed rape bowl, uh, in Arizona in Phoenix, I believe it's against the it should be Big 12 versus Big Ten.
- 42:32SPEAKER_05: I've seen some predictions where we play like a random team in the guaranteed rate bowl, but um, I uh you know you gotta think it would be like a Maryland potentially, or like a rutgers or something of that nature.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, what you don't want here is a bowl game where you're playing a G5 team.
- 42:48SPEAKER_05: That's just what you don't want to see.
- 42:50SPEAKER_05: Uh you know, lose.
- 42:52SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, yeah.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: It's it happened last time we were in a bowl.
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: Go back to freaking the USF game and the freaking whatever it was, the the Birmingham bowl or whatever.
- 43:02SPEAKER_05: God, that was awful.
- 43:03SPEAKER_05: It was Char los to Charlie Strong and USF.
- 43:07SPEAKER_04: Come on, Cliff.
- 43:08SPEAKER_04: Come on, Cliff.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: What are you doing?
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: You're doing so well at Arizona.
- 43:13SPEAKER_04: Where was this?
- 43:14SPEAKER_04: I hate this.
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: I'm obviously very happy for Cliff.
- 43:18SPEAKER_05: I hope he continues his success going forward, but um, yeah, I mean, you know, I I just really like you.
- 43:25SPEAKER_05: Hope for the Liberty Bowl.
- 43:26SPEAKER_05: I want to play an SEC team, I want to go out on top with a win against an SEC team.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, and any of those five that we talked about, I'd be happy with playing, to be honest.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: So oh man, it's but it's just good to see us in a bowl again.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: And we got there against all odds.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: So it's pretty it'll be fun just to be there, win or lose.
- 43:47SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: Beating beating one of Iowa State, Baylor, and Oklahoma State during that stretch is is good news with an interim coach and a freshman quarterback.
- 43:55SPEAKER_05: So I'll take it all day.
- 43:57SPEAKER_05: Um, football season's almost over, man.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: It's almost there.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: What a relief.
- 44:01SPEAKER_05: What a relief.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: And that means we get to fully transition into basketball season soon.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, we have our first big game coming up for the basketball team.
- 44:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, true road game going to Providence, playing the Friars uh in the Big East Big 12 challenge tomorrow, which is Wednesday.
- 44:22SPEAKER_05: By the time you're listening to this, it'll probably be Wednesday.
- 44:24SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, man, I'm hyped for this game.
- 44:27SPEAKER_05: Providence is a good team.
- 44:29SPEAKER_05: Uh, they're four and one.
- 44:30SPEAKER_05: They did lose to Virginia pretty good.
- 44:33SPEAKER_05: And this Virginia team's not fantastic this year, but they're still solid.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: Um, so but they have two pretty good wins.
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: Um, one against Northwestern, one against uh Wisconsin in Madison.
- 44:45SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, Providence is has played some good teams, and we have not.
- 44:49SPEAKER_05: So, man, this is this is gonna be a fun game.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a big East team.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: So obviously, you're gonna expect some sort of you know solidity, they're gonna be pretty good.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: Um, and it's great to see this because this is the first time we're finally seeing some competition.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna lie, while I like seeing our guys crush teams every single game, it's getting a little boring.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: It's getting you know, it's I'm ready to start seeing this get tested because I'm ready to because that's what we're here for.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: We're here for the big time, we're not here to just here and crush our by game.
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: So I'm excited to see us actually get on the road, actually get tested, see where we're weak, and see where we're good, so we can actually know get a better picture of what to expect going forward for the season.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: Obviously, one game doesn't determine all that, but it helps a whole of a lot more than playing Lamar.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: No disrespect to Lamar.
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: So I'm really excited about this.
- 45:34SPEAKER_03: And he I like he said, been saying, I think Kmax coming back.
- 45:37SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna have our our unofficial leader on the court.
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: And I feel good about this.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be fun.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: I definitely expect us to win.
- 45:44SPEAKER_03: So, but it's good to see us finally go head to head with somebody.
- 45:47SPEAKER_05: You know, we played six games, but only one of those, uh, only one of those games we had our full team because McCullers missed the last two, Shannon missed you know the first few at the beginning of the season.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: So wasn't that for the South Padre invitational?
- 46:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the only game, the only game where we had our whole team was the South Padre game where we did not play well um for the majority of that game.
- 46:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, neither did the entire production, it was god-awful.
- 46:14SPEAKER_05: But um, some things about Providence.
- 46:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, again, if you want to like really get in depth with the the Providence Friars and what to look forward to, I'd recommend Ryan Mainville's podcast, No Middle Madness.
- 46:27SPEAKER_05: They really do a deep dive into this team and what they do.
- 46:29SPEAKER_05: So I'll just do some highlights.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: Um, Nate Watson, I mean, is the guy to watch, he's their big guy, six foot 10, 260 pounds.
- 46:37SPEAKER_05: Um, he's he's a senior, so he's experienced, averaging about 17 points a game, six rebounds, uh block and a half a game.
- 46:45SPEAKER_05: So uh, I mean, we haven't really faced a good big man yet.
- 46:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, and we haven't really faced anybody yet, to be honest.
- 46:51SPEAKER_05: Um, but uh yeah, this is this is gonna be a challenge for our guys.
- 46:56SPEAKER_05: Um, I think uh Bryson Williams and Kevin O'Banner, Sando Silva, Bacho, whoever's playing uh down low is this is gonna be a uh big time matchup for them uh because he's really good down there in the paint.
- 47:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the the one thing that we can count on from that Sal Padre game was it was the batch of the Bacho coming out party.
- 47:14SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes, no doubt.
- 47:16SPEAKER_05: And if Bacho keeps getting these minutes, I mean he's played well.
- 47:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh when he's been in the game and he looks good, you know.
- 47:22SPEAKER_03: There's nothing tree, yeah, exactly.
- 47:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, you can be a six foot ten guy and destroy these smaller teams, but he's actually looked very nimble.
- 47:30SPEAKER_05: He stays with everybody that he's guarding.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, he's blocking shots, he's dunking the ball, he's he's playing aggressive.
- 47:36SPEAKER_05: He's shown speed that I did not expect from Daniel Bacho.
- 47:41SPEAKER_05: I was told he was slow, uh, he's coming off a couple major knee injuries, and you couldn't even tell from this kid.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: So I'm I'm hype for Bachcho.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: And uh, more importantly, the Bacho fan account has started.
- 47:52SPEAKER_05: Yes, uh, he's going around Twitter.
- 47:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, gotta love that guy.
- 47:56SPEAKER_05: Shout out to him uh for just making the Bacho fan account.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: And it back to business, though.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: This is the beginning of where things get rolling.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: You know, Providence College is gonna be the first tough team we play, and then we go straight to Tennessee, so in the Madison Square Garden.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: So it's it's a bit of a roll here, and obviously, after that, you know, past the Red Wolves is probably a bit of a little overlook there, but Gonzaga as well.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: So things are actually gonna start getting fun, but they're gonna start getting hard.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: So I don't know if we make it out of this undefeated.
- 48:25SPEAKER_03: I really do hope we do, but it's about time we see our team really get tested to the medal here.
- 48:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 48:31SPEAKER_05: If you uh um if you go one and two, I think, in the Providence, Tennessee, and Gonzaga games, you're okay.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: Uh, this is the we're not gonna have the Chris Beard mentality and say, you know, it's a win no matter what, we're gonna learn a lot about a team.
- 48:44SPEAKER_05: Well, I still want to beat the crap out of these guys, don't get me wrong, but you know, these are good just just having these games and and going through your motions and actually playing some really good teams, some teams you're gonna see in the Big 12 and past in the postseason.
- 48:57SPEAKER_05: So, um, you know, Tennessee, I think they're up to number 13 in the nation right now.
- 49:02SPEAKER_05: So uh and Gonzaga obviously is a top five team in the country.
- 49:05SPEAKER_05: So um they already beat UCLA and Texas this year, so they're uh they're proven.
- 49:11SPEAKER_05: Um, but uh just a couple more hints on uh on Providence here.
- 49:15SPEAKER_05: Jared Bynum, their starting point guard, is looking to be out for this game, so that's actually a huge plus for Texas Tech.
- 49:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, not having a facilitator on this team, he was averaging almost four assists a game.
- 49:27SPEAKER_05: So, you know, take that out of the equation, it's a good thing.
- 49:30SPEAKER_05: Um, but other guys to keep an eye on, Noah Horsler, he's a six foot eight senior forward, averaging about 12 and 9, uh, shooting 48 from the three-point line.
- 49:39SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, obviously got to watch him and um Al Jami Durham, uh six foot four senior guard.
- 49:46SPEAKER_05: So this is a senior heavy team.
- 49:47SPEAKER_05: This is a very experienced team, guys that have been in college basketball for a long time.
- 49:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's averaging about 13 points a game and three assists.
- 49:54SPEAKER_05: So uh this is an experienced roster at Providence, um, and going to their house.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, but our guys are experienced too.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: They may not have a lot of experience playing together necessarily, but they have a lot of experience in college basketball.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: You know, you talk from O'Banner to Warren to all these guys have played in big moments.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so this Providence experience is probably what's contributed to this surprisingly good season.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: You know, you and many others were saying that Providence is probably gonna be one of the weaker big East uh teams, but they've shown that they're here to play.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: So I guess all that experience has really, really does matter here at the end.
- 50:28SPEAKER_03: Um, and like you said, we got that too.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: So, and we probably we we hopefully have more talent as well.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: So, I'm really hoping to get this this win, it'd be a great way.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: It probably shoots us straight into the top 25 as well.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: So I I'm really looking forward to this game, man.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: And it's I think this is gonna be the first televised game as well.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: I don't think this is gonna because I think everything else has been on ESPN Plus.
- 50:46SPEAKER_03: This is one.
- 50:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this will be on FS1, uh, I believe 7:30 uh on Wednesday.
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: So make sure you catch the Red Raiders against a good opponent for the first time this season.
- 50:57SPEAKER_05: Um, let's get into a breakdown, talking tech breakdown, because there are other sports going on besides football and basketball, including volleyball.
- 51:05SPEAKER_05: Volleyball is the team of the week.
- 51:07SPEAKER_05: They make the NCAA tournament for the first time in 20 years, since 2001 was the last time we made the NCAA tournament.
- 51:16SPEAKER_05: And this group, led by Tony Graystone, is now in the NCAA tournament.
- 51:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, big ups to the volleyball team for getting back there.
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: Really awesome to see this amazing end of the season streak they went on really pay off.
- 51:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, because they it put them into this tournament.
- 51:31SPEAKER_03: And it's so good to see us back in the postseason.
- 51:33SPEAKER_03: 20 years is a really, really long time because the people you're recruiting weren't even born yet.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: So it's it's good to finally get that back on uh back in the the USA.
- 51:43SPEAKER_03: Absolutely be able to talk about that again.
- 51:45SPEAKER_03: So I'm looking forward to this.
- 51:46SPEAKER_03: I hope we'll be able to watch some games.
- 51:47SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, they're broadcasted um because I'm ready to see our ladies just you know, maybe do something special.
- 51:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 51:53SPEAKER_05: They play, they started off with Florida Gulf Coast, they're playing it on uh Friday, December 3rd in Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, and the winner of that game will go on to play either Wisconsin or Colgate, the winner of that game, probably gonna be Wisconsin.
- 52:10SPEAKER_05: Wisconsin is like the fourth overall scene in the entire tournament, so they're very good, but we got to get past Florida Gulf Coast first.
- 52:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, pretty even matchup from from what I've taken so far, um, from just what they've talked about with these two teams.
- 52:23SPEAKER_05: So uh, but shouts out Texas Tech volleyball, that's awesome.
- 52:26SPEAKER_05: Um, also Kenna Sawyer named first team All Big 12.
- 52:30SPEAKER_05: So shouts out to her.
- 52:31SPEAKER_05: She's been had a fantastic year.
- 52:32SPEAKER_03: I'm feeling a Cinderella story coming on.
- 52:35SPEAKER_03: Just me, just me.
- 52:36SPEAKER_05: Not just you.
- 52:38SPEAKER_05: I expect I'm thinking it's gonna happen.
- 52:40SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech is gonna go all the way, baby.
- 52:42SPEAKER_05: But um, no, just shouts out, just congrats for making the tournament.
- 52:46SPEAKER_05: That's really cool.
- 52:47SPEAKER_05: Um, women's basketball went one on one and one on the week.
- 52:51SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, dropping one to old Dominion.
- 52:53SPEAKER_05: Uh, we got beat pretty good, uh, 59 to 45.
- 52:57SPEAKER_05: But we did beat New Mexico 82 to 75.
- 53:00SPEAKER_05: Uh Lexi Hightower putting up 17 and 8 in the New Mexico win.
- 53:04SPEAKER_05: Uh, Vivian Gray's been out since tweaking her ankle in that Lamar game that uh went to OT.
- 53:09SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, obviously we're not at full strength.
- 53:11SPEAKER_05: Uh, gotta keep your best player.
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, gotta get your best player back.
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: So, you know, uh the old Dominion game stinks, but uh let's get healthy and uh let's keep competing because we have Georgia up next um for the ladies in Lubbock on December 2nd.
- 53:26SPEAKER_05: So let's get it going.
- 53:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a long season, and obviously, like we just said, if you're missing your best player, it's gonna be tough to be winning these games, especially in another season where you know Krista Gerlich is still trying to build this team up.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: Um, it's not exactly the the a power winner right now, so there's still improvement to be made.
- 53:42SPEAKER_03: So hopefully we get her back on the court so we can, you know, make it turn this into a decent season.
- 53:46SPEAKER_03: I know we're not looking for any world beating, but just it's a long, long way to go.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: And I I have hope that we we put it back on track here.
- 53:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 53:54SPEAKER_05: So that's all I got, man.
- 53:56SPEAKER_05: We're going to uh song of the week, unless you had something else.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: I you know what, actually, before we move on, uh I should have brought this up while we were talking about football.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: You know, during Thanksgiving, it's it's that time of year where you know the rivalry games happen.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: Do you think Texas Tech should have a set team that we play on on this Saturday every year?
- 54:16SPEAKER_05: I actually like the Baylor game being on uh at this time.
- 54:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, obviously when the new Big 12 comes into play, we can think about playing Houston every year if we want to make that kind of a new rivalry.
- 54:27SPEAKER_05: I like playing a Texas team, I guess, on Rivalry Week.
- 54:31SPEAKER_05: Um, it would be cool if we played UT while they're still here, uh, but you know, whatever, uh, because they're leaving anyway.
- 54:38SPEAKER_05: So I don't know.
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: I I kind of like the Bud Bowl being on Thanksgiving.
- 54:42SPEAKER_05: I think it's I think it's a solid as good as any, you know.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: I'm with you.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: The butt bowl is up there for me.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: Um, I I was just thinking, like, if they really wanted to kind of lean into making that a bigger deal in the Big 12, is you know, maybe they'd want to put like Baylor with TCU, um or or something like that, where you don't tech with with TCU kind of thing.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: But I think it would, I was with you initially there.
- 55:01SPEAKER_03: Was I think it'd be cool if you made Houston the the yearly game on Thanksgiving because what would be really cool about that is a ton of kids from Houston go to Texas Tech.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: And if they go home to their families on that weekend, they can all go to that game, and you can make it like a you know a visiting atmosphere.
- 55:15SPEAKER_03: So I think that'd be kind of cool.
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: And obviously, uh, there's a lot of potential there between tech and Houston since they're just two big schools, um, two big fan bases, uh two public schools.
- 55:23SPEAKER_03: There's just a lot more in common.
- 55:25SPEAKER_03: Um, but I do like the bubble and all that too.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: So I I just it was just kind of racking my brain how there wasn't a set one right now, and you know, obviously, even if we do keep playing UT, I'll probably go back to AM on the Thanksgiving weekend for them.
- 55:37SPEAKER_03: Um, so but and UT will probably be before the season starts.
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, I I'm with you, either butt bowl or Houston.
- 55:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I think that's the way to go uh for rivalry week.
- 55:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, but man, college football was so fun.
- 55:50SPEAKER_05: Besides all the coaching changes, this was such a good week of college football.
- 55:54SPEAKER_05: We had a ton of fun watching all the games.
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, Bedlam was nuts, man.
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: It was, it was crazy.
- 56:00SPEAKER_03: I can't tell you how great it is for the Big 12 that OU and UT are not only not in the Big 12 championship, especially for OU, but UT had a historically awful season after they uh announced that they're leaving the Big 12.
- 56:15SPEAKER_03: And it's just it's it's just such a good affirmation for us after all this time that we're hearing that we're not good enough to be playing OU and UT, that they're too good for this podcast conference, and they can't even win it.
- 56:27SPEAKER_03: And that's just it feels so good to see that.
- 56:30SPEAKER_03: And it's it's it's it's phenomenal, and it it couldn't happen to better people, honestly.
- 56:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, for how high and mighty they've been since uh the SEC move was announced.
- 56:40SPEAKER_05: This was a joy to watch as a fan of the remaining eight or the hateful, the hateful eight, whatever uh anybody wants to call it.
- 56:48SPEAKER_05: But uh, yeah, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, West Virginia.
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: We were all enjoying it.
- 56:56SPEAKER_03: And as this uh season comes to a close, and we're talking about the playoffs and stuff, we could potentially have two future Big 12 teams in the new playoff.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: And that is that is so tasty if it was Oklahoma State and Cincinnati.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: That'd be so awesome.
- 57:09SPEAKER_05: That's the dream, right?
- 57:10SPEAKER_05: The dream is Georgia uh beating Alabama in the SEC championship, and then Georgia, Michigan, uh Cincy, and uh Oklahoma State, right?
- 57:18SPEAKER_05: That's the dream.
- 57:19SPEAKER_03: It is, it really is.
- 57:20SPEAKER_03: I just hope that Nick Saban doesn't pull like a I'm an oh I'm inevitable Thanos thing and beat Georgia and put themselves in the playoff.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: No Greg Sankey is emailing threats to Kirby Smart as we speak, you know, get two SEC teams in the in the playoff.
- 57:36SPEAKER_03: But uh in no justifiable way will they be able to put a two-loss team in right now, in my opinion.
- 57:41SPEAKER_03: So uh I really do hope Georgia just smashes Alabama to make you know AM's one good win look not you know, not as good as it was.
- 57:48SPEAKER_03: So yeah, that's true.
- 57:49SPEAKER_05: If uh if it I also think it'd be hilarious if Notre Dame messes around and makes the playoffs without their coach, like what this is like interim coach is coaching the playoff game.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: What I think everyone would be kind of pulling for him at that point, like them in Cincinnati.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: Everyone will be like, okay, let's go.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: Well, I don't know, I don't know.
- 58:07SPEAKER_05: So a lot of people hate Notre Dame, so I don't know.
- 58:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, I know, but I'm saying, like, the one time that they would go for them, right?
- 58:13SPEAKER_03: Was with this interim young man coach that just like has no experience going up against these Goliaths.
- 58:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, watch him mess around and win it.
- 58:21SPEAKER_05: Who knows?
- 58:22SPEAKER_05: Unbelievable.
- 58:23SPEAKER_05: But all right, man, let's move on, let's finish it off with song of the week.
- 58:26SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what's your song of the week?
- 58:28SPEAKER_03: All right, so huge, huge, huge news within the country music sphere is Turnpike Tribadours have confirmed that they're back, baby.
- 58:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, the most one of the most influential country bands in this side of the country uh in a long, long time.
- 58:45SPEAKER_03: And they're obviously one of my favorites since I just love this genre so much.
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: So I decided to do one of their songs, kind of kick it back in the gear.
- 58:52SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go ahead and go one uh off their latest album, A Long Way from Your Heart.
- 58:56SPEAKER_03: And I'm gonna go with an upbeat one since we're happy around here right now.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go off of one of their singles off of that album The House Fire.
- 59:02SPEAKER_03: You can't help but sing along.
- 59:04SPEAKER_03: It's just such a go, uh feel-good song going forward, and it feels so good to have them back.
- 59:08SPEAKER_03: It feels good to sing this song.
- 59:10SPEAKER_03: So the house fire, the turnpike troubadours.
- 59:16SPEAKER_07: I can stand up to the test.
- 59:18SPEAKER_07: I can live on so much less.
- 59:21SPEAKER_07: This much happened.
- 59:24SPEAKER_05: New Oklahoma Sooner Co-Coaches the Turnpike Troubadours.
- 59:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, yeah, man, I know everybody was all hyped up about Turnpike announcing they are coming back uh after a hiatus.
- 59:37SPEAKER_05: So that's cool.
- 59:39SPEAKER_05: That's cool.
- 59:39SPEAKER_05: Uh, I've never really uh gotten into Turnpike, not not from them not having good music or anything.
- 59:46SPEAKER_05: I just haven't listened to a ton of it.
- 59:48SPEAKER_05: So uh, but I know you're a huge fan, so that's a good song of the week.
- 59:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm already gonna pre-order their vinyl as they announce it.
- 59:54SPEAKER_03: Already have all their albums on on the on the discs as well.
- 59:57SPEAKER_03: So just I'm so happy to have them back.
- 59:58SPEAKER_03: It's so good for the genre.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_05: There you go, man.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_05: Um, my song of the week.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_05: Uh, gonna stick to country.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_05: Um, not doing a turnpike song though, but I am doing kill a word by Eric Church.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, something that I was just jamming to today, and I thought, you know, this is a good jam.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_05: Let's let the people listen to it.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_05: Um, really, really cool lyrics in this song.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_05: I think this is um I thought I like Eric Church a lot out of uh, you know, a lot of the mainstream big-time country artists.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_05: I think Eric Church kind of holds up really well uh and hasn't really changed too too much.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_05: So this is a good one.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_05: Kill a word, Eric Church.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_08: You step around to turn me black.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, man.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_03: I can't surprise it took us this long to do an Eric Church song.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_03: He's definitely one of the best out of Nashville.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_03: He kind of keeps that country rock vibe going.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_03: He doesn't seem too fake about any of it or too uh Nashville eyes, too overproduced.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_03: And that's off a really good album.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: Mr.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: Understood, uh Mr.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_03: Misunderstood is a phenomenal album through and through.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: I think it's his best easily.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_03: So good pick and a good guy, good way to go.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_05: So, all right, man.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_05: Let's look forward to the bowl game.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_05: Let's look forward to kicking Providence's ass and then kicking Tennessee's ass and then kicking Gonzaga's ass, and then just you know, going undefeated and winning the national championship in basketball.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_05: Easy baseball season, not too far as well.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_05: Texas Rangers making moves.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_05: Shouts out to the Texas Rangers for spending half a billion dollars on a bunch of players during the baseball's wild.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_03: Maybe baseball is crazy.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_05: No salary cap is just nuts.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_05: That's the stupidest idea in the world.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_05: It's the stupidest idea at any professional league.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_05: But shouts out for the Rangers fans.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, your team is not ass like it has been uh the past number of years.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_03: And a great thing about uh football season coming to a close is you know, as we get through basketball, you kind of get so excited for baseball as well.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_03: And then Tim Tadlock's been throwing a lot of good recruits on the board.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_03: We're obviously top in the nation recruiting class already.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_03: Um, and I'm just he's just a king, man.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_03: I'm so excited to see what he does this season.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, looking forward to talking more baseball once that gets a little closer.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_05: But we are gonna end it off like we always do with some plugs.

- 1:02:46SPEAKER_01: And I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_02: I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_02: This is incredible.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_02: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
