- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome into another edition of the check Odli Andrew Decheco
- 0:14Speaker 2: here Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com, and the
- 0:17Speaker 2: Eagles have waved long snapper Charlie Hewlett. So that was
- 0:22Speaker 2: something that was in effect as of Monday afternoon. So
- 0:28Speaker 2: we'll see what happens with all that. He does have
- 0:30Speaker 2: to clear waivers obviously.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And who knows, maybe they'll bring.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Him back on the practice squad and navigate it from there.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I'm not exactly sure what goes into it. We'll learn
- 0:40Speaker 2: more tomorrow when the Cordators speak. That will be Fic Fangio,
- 0:43Speaker 2: Michael Clay, and Kevin Patulo. But I want to take
- 0:46Speaker 2: a second here to really hone in on what the
- 0:48Speaker 2: Eagles were able to do from a defensive standpoint yesterday
- 0:52Speaker 2: against the Buffalo Bills, holding them to just twelve points.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And Buffalo had a chance to win that game yes
- 0:59Speaker 2: with the two point conversion and wide receiver Khalil Shakir
- 1:02Speaker 2: was open, Josh Allen was not able to step into
- 1:05Speaker 2: his throw and.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Deliver a strike to Shakir.
- 1:09Speaker 2: A lot of that had to do with the pressure
- 1:12Speaker 2: that was mounting all afternoon against a pretty stout Buffalo
- 1:17Speaker 2: Bills offensive line headed by tackle Spencer Brown and Dion Dawkins.
- 1:22Speaker 2: On that play, Jay when Phillips got good pressure, but
- 1:26Speaker 2: throughout the game, and I think this is something that
- 1:28Speaker 2: the Eagles can really start to hang their hat on
- 1:31Speaker 2: as they moved to the postseason knowing that they've now
- 1:33Speaker 2: done it against a pretty strong offensive line at above average.
- 1:38Speaker 2: One at that is that they were able to get
- 1:41Speaker 2: home with pressure and Jalen Phillips has played a big
- 1:44Speaker 2: role in that using his length, his athleticism. He's aggressive
- 1:49Speaker 2: against the run, setting the edge, and he had some
- 1:52Speaker 2: really good rushes against the Buffalo Bills. Now so did
- 1:55Speaker 2: jay loox Hunt, and jalox Hunt had two sacks three
- 1:58Speaker 2: quarterback hits in that game. Now he leads the Eagles
- 2:00Speaker 2: with sacks with six and a half. I think he's
- 2:03Speaker 2: done a really nice job of just becoming a well
- 2:06Speaker 2: rounded player a second year pro, and it didn't start
- 2:09Speaker 2: out as he probably expected early in the season, but
- 2:13Speaker 2: things take time. The more reps that he's gotten, the
- 2:16Speaker 2: better he's become, the more proficient. You can see that
- 2:18Speaker 2: he has really dipped into his bag of tricks in
- 2:21Speaker 2: terms of his pass rush Arsenal and he looks stronger,
- 2:26Speaker 2: more physical, setting the edge with authority, and that's no
- 2:30Speaker 2: different from what Nolan Smith has been able to provide.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And since he's returned from injury, he's.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Been someone who the Eagles have now removed that pitch
- 2:38Speaker 2: count and they're leaning in on him more and you
- 2:41Speaker 2: now see more of a three man rotation. Brandon Graham
- 2:44Speaker 2: playing very sparingly. He also moonlights inside, but I think
- 2:48Speaker 2: they have really established a three man edge rusher group.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I th're able to balance out those snaps and keep
- 2:54Speaker 2: those guys healthy. They're going to be a force in
- 2:57Speaker 2: the postseason. Now you also look at in two wise,
- 3:00Speaker 2: they have a lot of push from that interior position,
- 3:04Speaker 2: whether that was Jalen Carter, who the Eagles welcome back
- 3:07Speaker 2: on Sunday, had a sack, had a huge block point
- 3:11Speaker 2: after attempt to have Moro, Jomo, Jordan Davis, Byron Young
- 3:14Speaker 2: helps out as in a situational role. But you're starting
- 3:18Speaker 2: to see this Eagles defensive line come together and provide
- 3:23Speaker 2: so much pressure from every which way that it's now
- 3:26Speaker 2: alleviating some of that pressure on the back end, where
- 3:30Speaker 2: you already have two standouts in Quinya Mitchell, who I
- 3:33Speaker 2: believe is the Eagles MVP, Cooper Dejen manning things down
- 3:36Speaker 2: in the middle of the field, and two safeties in
- 3:39Speaker 2: Reblankenship and Marcus EPs, who I think have done a
- 3:41Speaker 2: really nice job.
- 3:42Speaker 1: More on them in a second.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Adorri Jackson has put his stamp on that second cornerback
- 3:48Speaker 2: spot and I think he deserves a lot of credit
- 3:50Speaker 2: for doing so. He had to earn the trust of
- 3:53Speaker 2: Vic Fangio and they've and I've mentioned this many times,
- 3:57Speaker 2: they've they've tried to replace him, whether that was Keiley Ringo,
- 4:02Speaker 2: whether that was Jacoreyan Bennett, jy R Alexander They you know,
- 4:08Speaker 2: they were able to. You know, Adri is the last
- 4:11Speaker 2: man standing. And I think a lot of that is
- 4:13Speaker 2: a testament to his mindset, his ability to block out
- 4:16Speaker 2: whatever else is going on, whatever folks are saying on
- 4:19Speaker 2: the outside, good player, bad play, keep your head high
- 4:22Speaker 2: and worry about the next play.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And that's something that is unique. He's able to do that.
- 4:28Speaker 2: You don't last nine years in the NFL without that
- 4:30Speaker 2: type of mindset and bounce you know from two other,
- 4:33Speaker 2: you know, three different teams. If you're not wired to
- 4:37Speaker 2: be mentally strong, and I've written in the past about
- 4:40Speaker 2: his path, you know, through through football and how that
- 4:46Speaker 2: sort of helped shape his mindset so that secondary is
- 4:52Speaker 2: really come together and become a unit that is sufficient enough.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And that pass rush that I go back to, I
- 5:00Speaker 2: thought that was the shining star of that Buffalo Bills game.
- 5:03Speaker 2: They're not able to probably win that game without it.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Josh Allen was clearly rattled. He was limited, of course,
- 5:08Speaker 2: with that foot injury, and didn't move around as well
- 5:11Speaker 2: as he normally does. But I thought that that Eagles
- 5:14Speaker 2: defense did a really, really, really outstanding job. And there's
- 5:18Speaker 2: no mistake that it wasn't just that game. They answered
- 5:20Speaker 2: the bell against the Raiders, against the Commanders, they answered
- 5:23Speaker 2: it against the Packers, the Lions, and so there's enough
- 5:30Speaker 2: of a sample size there to tell you that this
- 5:33Speaker 2: is a championship caliber defense and they're only getting better
- 5:37Speaker 2: offensively is another story, because when you unpack all the
- 5:40Speaker 2: things that transpired yesterday, to see such disparity from half
- 5:45Speaker 2: to half is really puzzling. I thought Jalen Hurts did
- 5:49Speaker 2: some nice things in the first half, made some big
- 5:50Speaker 2: time throws and tight windows, navigated the pocket, well and
- 5:55Speaker 2: was able to push the ball down the field throwing
- 5:58Speaker 2: with timing and accuracy, and the offense was on schedule.
- 6:01Speaker 1: They were ahead of the sticks.
- 6:02Speaker 2: The second half was a tail of a was a
- 6:04Speaker 2: different story altogether, where they were playing from behind the sticks.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Too many negative plays, missed assignments, Saquon Barkley not able
- 6:11Speaker 2: to generate anything in terms of the running game.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And then the offensive line.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I didn't think a Knight did a very good job
- 6:19Speaker 2: blocking things up for Saquon. There was a lot of,
- 6:22Speaker 2: as I mentioned, missed assignments there, and you couple that
- 6:25Speaker 2: with questionable sequencing and there's no mistake. Oh, by the way,
- 6:30Speaker 2: your quarterback went oh for seven. But I don't But
- 6:32Speaker 2: Jay when hurts is very far down the list. If
- 6:35Speaker 2: you're looking at someone to put the onus on, I
- 6:37Speaker 2: look at this game and I think play calling and
- 6:40Speaker 2: putting players in position to be successful in that second half,
- 6:43Speaker 2: maybe not adjusting to what the Buffalo Bills were doing,
- 6:46Speaker 2: it's probably the correct way to direct it. That's not
- 6:51Speaker 2: to say that's been the case all season long. There's
- 6:53Speaker 2: been a lot of reasons, and I've outlined all of them,
- 6:56Speaker 2: but this is the offense that the Eagles are taking
- 6:58Speaker 2: into the postseason. Dramatic change one way or the other
- 7:02Speaker 2: at this stage is probably unrealistic. But do I expect
- 7:08Speaker 2: them to be quite like they were against the Bills
- 7:11Speaker 2: in that second half. Absolutely not. I think they could.
- 7:14Speaker 2: They're going to be marginally better, and frankly, in this
- 7:19Speaker 2: NFL in the season, that might be enough. There's enough
- 7:22Speaker 2: parody around the NFL. You look around the NFC, every
- 7:24Speaker 2: playoff team, even the Rams. They're not infallible. They have
- 7:29Speaker 2: imperfections that the Eagles and every team can exploit on
- 7:33Speaker 2: any given day. But the offense has to be better
- 7:36Speaker 2: than what they were yesterday to be able to hold
- 7:40Speaker 2: up their end of the bargain. I've said that a
- 7:42Speaker 2: lot of times this season because I feel that it's
- 7:46Speaker 2: it's unfair and unrealistic to expect the defense to continue
- 7:50Speaker 2: to do the heavy lifting and eventually the dam will
- 7:54Speaker 2: break there. They're going to have a game where they're
- 7:56Speaker 2: not at their best, where things don't go their way,
- 7:59Speaker 2: and I think all things considered, they've locked a ton
- 8:03Speaker 2: of snaps that are on the field a lot. They're
- 8:05Speaker 2: gassed by the end of games, but their conditioning.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Really rises above all of that. You saw that against
- 8:10Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills.
- 8:12Speaker 2: But the Eagles need to get back to being able
- 8:15Speaker 2: to play complimentary football, not taking their foot off the gas,
- 8:19Speaker 2: not playing this risk averse style where they're trying to
- 8:22Speaker 2: put such an emphasis on not turning the football over. Understandably,
- 8:25Speaker 2: there is a big track record there, a considerable track
- 8:28Speaker 2: record that leads to success, a sustained success for the
- 8:33Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles. But there has to be a way to
- 8:37Speaker 2: strike that balance where you're able to find a happy medium,
- 8:40Speaker 2: and I don't think the Eagles have done that. Do
- 8:42Speaker 2: I expect them to be able to suddenly discover that
- 8:44Speaker 2: at this juncture. Probably not, But they I have a
- 8:48Speaker 2: hard time envisioning this offense not being able to pull
- 8:51Speaker 2: it together enough so where they can move the football.
- 8:55Speaker 2: They It might not look perfect, it's probably going to
- 8:58Speaker 2: look disjointed, much like it has all seen. But they
- 9:00Speaker 2: have to be able to put up points and in
- 9:03Speaker 2: the red zone.
- 9:04Speaker 1: They've been pretty sound this season.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I thought Kevin Patullo was creative pretty much all season long.
- 9:11Speaker 1: That's what they really can hang their hat on.
- 9:13Speaker 2: You talk about identity, they don't really have an identity
- 9:15Speaker 2: on offense this year. They want to run the football effectively.
- 9:18Speaker 2: They haven't been able to do that. But they protect
- 9:21Speaker 2: the football and they're good in the red zone. So
- 9:23Speaker 2: those are two hallmarks that I believe the Eagles can
- 9:26Speaker 2: carry into the postseason. Elevate the offensive performance just a
- 9:31Speaker 2: little bit, and this defense is going to take care
- 9:33Speaker 2: of the rest. Again, in most seasons, this offense that
- 9:37Speaker 2: the Eagles are currently fielding is not likely good enough
- 9:40Speaker 2: to take them very far in the postseason, but this
- 9:44Speaker 2: year is unlike most, so they just have to be
- 9:48Speaker 2: slightly better than what they've done. They can't go three
- 9:51Speaker 2: or thirteen on third downs. They can't control the ball
- 9:54Speaker 2: for just eight minutes and forty five seconds in the
- 9:57Speaker 2: second half. They have to go out there and in
- 10:00Speaker 2: showcase some of what they were able to do against
- 10:03Speaker 2: the Vikings against the first half of the Rams game
- 10:06Speaker 2: at times against the Buccaneers. There's been the Raiders sometimes
- 10:11Speaker 2: against the Chargers without the turnovers, but they haven't been
- 10:15Speaker 2: able to string together four consecutive quarters.
- 10:17Speaker 1: That's gonna have to change.
- 10:18Speaker 2: But I think all things being equal, when you look
- 10:21Speaker 2: at these NFC teams, the Rams, the Seahawks, the Packers,
- 10:24Speaker 2: the Bears, than forty nine ers. I give a slight
- 10:29Speaker 2: edge to the photo of Eagles because they have a
- 10:31Speaker 2: demonstrated track record in the postseason.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 13:58Speaker 2: You know the moment's stocking be too big for them.
- 14:00Speaker 2: You know that they are going to be able to
- 14:02Speaker 2: meet the moment and you're not going to throw a
- 14:04Speaker 2: lot at them that's going to phase them. So that
- 14:06Speaker 2: counts for a lot. You can't say the same for
- 14:08Speaker 2: as Sam Darnold or a Matt Lafleur, which Nick Sirianni
- 14:11Speaker 2: and the Eagles have had their number. Brock Perty's been
- 14:13Speaker 2: on the big stage before, but that's a quarterback that
- 14:17Speaker 2: I believe the Eagles can get after with their pass rush.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Matthew Stafford and the Rams are a different story altogether
- 14:22Speaker 2: because he is playing at such a high level right now.
- 14:26Speaker 2: He has the group of receivers and skill players to
- 14:29Speaker 2: really make an impact and stress the Eagles defensively. But
- 14:33Speaker 2: their secondary was exploited against the Seahawks. So as you
- 14:37Speaker 2: can see, all of these teams have imperfections. It's about
- 14:39Speaker 2: who's playing their best when it matters the most, and
- 14:43Speaker 2: I tend to lean towards the Eagles and Jalen Hurts
- 14:46Speaker 2: and Nick Siriani and a lot of the leaders that
- 14:48Speaker 2: they have on that team to get them right and
- 14:50Speaker 2: have them ready for whatever's thrown at them when all
- 14:53Speaker 2: the chips are down.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Just some of my Monday thoughts. That's going to do
- 14:56Speaker 1: it for this edition of a Czech Odily.
