Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / A Shift of Consciousness Brings New Understanding of One's Life and Existence in the World
Transcript
- 0:00We typically live rooted in the ego consciousness in the
- 0:04external physical world. We judge things based on our
- 0:08perceptions, our physical, vital and mental processes, and our
- 0:13habitual way of understanding things from the standpoint of
- 0:16the ego. This leads to a very limited and
- 0:20biased viewpoint that does not provide a complete view of
- 0:24things. We see a small slice of
- 0:27existence and try to judge from that.
- 0:31There's a famous story that illustrates this principle. 5
- 0:35blind men are asked to describe an elephant by feeling it.
- 0:39One feels the ear, one the leg, one the tail, one the trunk, and
- 0:45one the body. They each provide a different
- 0:49and obviously very inaccurate description of an elephant.
- 0:54By shifting our standpoint of consciousness away from the ego,
- 0:58we have a better opportunity to understand the forces at work in
- 1:02the world and the nature of their action and the trajectory
- 1:06they are following toward whatever may be their intended
- 1:09resolution or result. Humanity as a whole has had
- 1:14several experiences that arose out of a radical shift of
- 1:17viewpoint. Human beings used to believe the
- 1:21world was flat, and this severely limited the opportunity
- 1:25for a comprehensive global understanding.
- 1:28The shift of understanding to one of a spherical world from
- 1:32that of a flat world was a major shift of standpoint.
- 1:37Another shift occurred when humanity gained the
- 1:40understanding that our Earth is not the center of existence, and
- 1:45that in fact, the Earth revolves around the Sun, is part of a
- 1:49solar system which exists as a small group of planets and moons
- 1:54grouped around a star which was moving through a Galaxy along a
- 1:59relatively minor arm of that Galaxy within a universe
- 2:04consisting of a vast number of galaxies.
- 2:08Yet another shift is actually occurring now as we grasp the
- 2:12significance of viewing the Earth from space and we
- 2:16recognize the fragility of our planet and its environment and
- 2:21the unity and symbiotic nature of all life on the planet.
- 2:26This shift is starting to help us focus on the need for
- 2:29cooperation and a balanced approach to the beings who share
- 2:33the planet with us and to the planetary environment itself.
- 2:39We as yet generally fail to see the forces at work, the causes
- 2:44that create the results we see in the world.
- 2:47That understanding can only come as we shift our consciousness
- 2:51away from the ego and begin to see things from another plane, a
- 2:56causal plane. We're intentionality far
- 2:59different and far beyond that of human intentions create the
- 3:04significance, purpose and action that we experience and respond
- 3:10to in our lives, the mother writes quote, if one goes out of
- 3:16the determinism of the world as it is at present, this world
- 3:20which is a mixture of the physical, vital, mental and of
- 3:24something of a spiritual influence or infusion, quite
- 3:28veiled, everything that happens is the combination of all this.
- 3:34If we go out of all that we can do it.
- 3:38If we rise above the physical, material world as it is and
- 3:43enter another consciousness, we perceive things totally
- 3:47differently. And then we see that behind
- 3:51these appearances, which seemed to us absolutely logical and
- 3:56extremely natural and almost necessary, there's an action
- 4:00which, if perceived in one's ordinary consciousness, would
- 4:04seem all the time miraculous. There is an intervention of
- 4:10forces, consciousnesses, movements, influences, which is
- 4:15invisible or imperceptible for our ordinary consciousness and
- 4:20constantly changes the whole course of circumstances.
- 4:25We need, don't need to go very far.
- 4:27It is enough to take just a step outside the ordinary
- 4:31consciousness in order to realize this.
- 4:35I have already said several times that if one finds the
- 4:38psychic consciousness within oneself and identifies oneself
- 4:42with it, well, immediately one feels a complete reversal of
- 4:47circumstances and sees things almost totally differently from
- 4:51the way one ordinarily sees them.
- 4:54For one perceives the force which is acting, instead of the
- 4:58result of this action. At present you see only the
- 5:03result of the action of the forces, and this seems to you
- 5:06natural, logical, and it's only when something a little abnormal
- 5:11occurs, or it's a little abnormal for you, that you begin
- 5:16to feel surprised. But if you were in another state
- 5:20of consciousness, what seems abnormal to you now would no
- 5:25longer be so. You would see that it is the
- 5:29effect of something else, of another action than the one you
- 5:34perceive. End Quote.
