- 0:09Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:12Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Bizarre and Lazar. Hello, everybody nailed it. Joined us always
- 0:18Speaker 2: by our Bara.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars This.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Is a social media offense. They do all these fancy
- 0:31Speaker 2: motions and dipsy dues and oh, we're gonna have four
- 0:35Speaker 2: receivers on one side of the formation and go four strong,
- 0:38Speaker 2: and we're gonna motion bijon. He's gonna start outside and
- 0:41Speaker 2: he's gonna motion inside, and he's gonna motion back outside
- 0:43Speaker 2: and he's gonna motion into the pistol and then we're
- 0:45Speaker 2: gonna hand him the ball. But then sometimes we're gonna
- 0:47Speaker 2: throw them the screen and we're just doing all this
- 0:49Speaker 2: different stuff. And all these defenses are just letting the
- 0:54Speaker 2: Falcons offense go into a blender and then they're just
- 0:57Speaker 2: sorting it out after the snap. You're doing all this
- 0:59Speaker 2: fans stuff for no reason.
- 1:01Speaker 1: No wonder the Dolphins cooked them. They're used to seeing
- 1:04Speaker 1: that it's different.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I almost you did, good for you, good job, good
- 1:15Speaker 2: job by you on that one. Well, I want to
- 1:19Speaker 2: give the Falcons a tiny bit of flowers in this game.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Mainly just Drake London. Draank London was was very very
- 1:28Speaker 2: good in this game. But I feel like that take
- 1:31Speaker 2: kind of, you know, that's kind of how it unfolded,
- 1:35Speaker 2: to be honest with you, in particular, and I didn't
- 1:38Speaker 2: want to start here, but just in particular, the Falcons
- 1:42Speaker 2: being allergic to the middle of the field just completely
- 1:44Speaker 2: held up, and I just don't I don't know if
- 1:47Speaker 2: that's Zach Robinson thing. I don't know if that's a
- 1:49Speaker 2: Pennix thing. I don't know if it's both, but it
- 1:51Speaker 2: is pretty funny to watch an offense that literally will
- 1:54Speaker 2: only throw the ball outside the numbers. It's down the
- 1:58Speaker 2: field or it's outside the number, all right. Anyways, we'll
- 2:01Speaker 2: get to more Falcons here in a second. I do
- 2:04Speaker 2: want to start trade deadline or the trade deadline that
- 2:07Speaker 2: wasn't very deadliney or eventful for the Patriots.
- 2:11Speaker 1: We're going to start there was an NFL trade deadline,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and then we're.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Going to do some Falcons recap. We'll talk a little
- 2:17Speaker 2: bit about this Bucks game. Hopefully we get some time
- 2:19Speaker 2: in to talk about the Bucks, because I do think
- 2:22Speaker 2: this is a really interesting matchup for Drake May against
- 2:25Speaker 2: a really blitz, heavy pressure, heavy good Tampa defense. So
- 2:31Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to that on Sunday. But let's start
- 2:34Speaker 2: trade deadline. It's Evan Lazar, it's Alex Barth, it's Ax
- 2:38Speaker 2: behind the glass, and we are going to be with
- 2:41Speaker 2: you for the next couple hours here. And I understand,
- 2:44Speaker 2: you know, I sigh before I'm about to give this take,
- 2:47Speaker 2: because I understand the angst. I understand why Patriots fans
- 2:55Speaker 2: are upset that the Patriots stood pat at the deadline
- 2:58Speaker 2: and didn't make a trade. First of all, we all
- 3:03Speaker 2: like trades. We all like when our teams make moves.
- 3:06Speaker 2: It's just fun. It's fun to go and see, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 2: you go on Twitter. I get the notifications. I'm sure
- 3:12Speaker 2: other people. Do you know, Adam Shefter Patriots traded for
- 3:15Speaker 2: player acts? Ooh, you know, like it's exciting. I get it.
- 3:18Speaker 2: It's a dopamine hit. It's also a team that I
- 3:21Speaker 2: think we can all identify is a little bit thin
- 3:26Speaker 2: in certain areas because this is truly, as Mike Rable
- 3:28Speaker 2: likes to say, this is year one. They've only had
- 3:31Speaker 2: one full offseason with this regime, with this coaching staff
- 3:36Speaker 2: to build up the roster. So they got some frontline
- 3:40Speaker 2: players in here this offseason. All of those guys, for
- 3:43Speaker 2: the most part, have contributed to seven and two. They
- 3:46Speaker 2: deserve credit for that, But in order to continue to build,
- 3:50Speaker 2: they are going to need a couple of years to
- 3:52Speaker 2: build out not only just the depth, but I would
- 3:54Speaker 2: also say like the youth of the roster and the
- 3:58Speaker 2: homegrown players on the roster. So I get why everybody
- 4:01Speaker 2: is frustrated, But I will say this for the Patriots,
- 4:06Speaker 2: and this is not to carry the water take. This
- 4:10Speaker 2: is not propaganda. I said this last week on PU
- 4:14Speaker 2: when I got into an argument with Fred and mostly
- 4:17Speaker 2: Fred a little bit of Paul about the Washington Commanders
- 4:21Speaker 2: and the Washington Commanders going all in on what I
- 4:27Speaker 2: kind of felt like was a little bit of fool's
- 4:29Speaker 2: gold last year. So the Commanders at the trade deadline,
- 4:32Speaker 2: they trade for Marshawn Lattimore. They traded three picks for
- 4:35Speaker 2: Marshaw Lattimore. That trade has not worked out. He has
- 4:38Speaker 2: not been very good in Washington, and now they don't
- 4:41Speaker 2: have those picks moving forward to keep drafting and keep
- 4:44Speaker 2: building around Jayden Daniels. So I commend the Patriots for
- 4:51Speaker 2: still sticking to the plan and still understanding that even
- 4:56Speaker 2: though they are seven and two right now and look
- 5:00Speaker 2: like they're wide open in the afc UH, they are
- 5:04Speaker 2: understanding that they might not be quite as good as
- 5:09Speaker 2: their record indicates. The quarterback has broken out, the schedule
- 5:13Speaker 2: has been favorable, and they've won a lot of games
- 5:15Speaker 2: early in the season, and they deserve a ton of
- 5:17Speaker 2: credit for that. But you have a long term vision here,
- 5:22Speaker 2: and I think giving up draft capital. And I also
- 5:26Speaker 2: just to add to this, they are not going to
- 5:30Speaker 2: trade with the Jets, like Quentin Williams and Sace Gardner.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Were not anymore importantly the Jets, We're not going to
- 5:37Speaker 1: trade with them.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Well that's what I think. Like that the Patriots were
- 5:40Speaker 2: not going to be able to be in on Sace
- 5:43Speaker 2: Gardener and Quentin Williams. So when it comes to you know,
- 5:49Speaker 2: maybe like a Jalen Phillips. I don't know if the
- 5:52Speaker 2: Dolphins would have traded with them either, but maybe a
- 5:55Speaker 2: Jalen Phillips who is a third round pick for a
- 5:58Speaker 2: rental pass rusher. That would have been you know, eight
- 6:00Speaker 2: games you're paying for for Jalen Phillips, a third round
- 6:03Speaker 2: pick Rashid Shahed, which is essentially a fourth and a
- 6:07Speaker 2: six is basically like a low third. So you're giving
- 6:10Speaker 2: up another probably third or fourth round pick at least
- 6:13Speaker 2: for Rashid Shahed. Like those players are rentals. Those guys
- 6:17Speaker 2: are going to be on expiring contracts. They're going to
- 6:20Speaker 2: be up at the end of the year. And I
- 6:23Speaker 2: am four or in favor of the Patriots not making
- 6:28Speaker 2: those kinds of trades because I don't think that they
- 6:32Speaker 2: should be investing, you know, top one hundred draft capital
- 6:37Speaker 2: just yet in this roster. I think that they need
- 6:40Speaker 2: to still draft and develop. I think they need to
- 6:42Speaker 2: keep those picks because in the offseason, more players are
- 6:45Speaker 2: available that might be bigger names, that might be more
- 6:49Speaker 2: helpful to their team. So that was one element of it.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Let me just cut, yeah, go ahead, saying hold on,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and I differ on you slightly on that. I'll let
- 6:58Speaker 1: you finish. But like saying hold one of the picks
- 7:00Speaker 1: doesn't mean they have to make all eleven picks. It
- 7:02Speaker 1: can also imply, you know, trade those picks when the
- 7:05Speaker 1: market's more robust down the road.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Exactly the other thing that I would say about this,
- 7:11Speaker 2: and they're in the defense of not doing anything. The
- 7:16Speaker 2: vibes in the Patriots locker room right now are immaculate.
- 7:20Speaker 2: They have great team chemistry, they have they are buying in.
- 7:26Speaker 2: You see it. You guys see it. We post all
- 7:28Speaker 2: these videos, these postgame locker room videos, all these different
- 7:32Speaker 2: things of how this team is responding to Mike Rabel,
- 7:35Speaker 2: how this team is responding to each other, the brotherhood
- 7:38Speaker 2: that's building in that locker room. So if you go
- 7:41Speaker 2: out and you start adding even if you want to
- 7:45Speaker 2: argue these are marginal upgrades. Jalen Phillips, Rashid Jaheed, you know,
- 7:49Speaker 2: players like that that are marginal upgrades over the guys
- 7:53Speaker 2: you currently have on the roster. Well, now you need
- 7:55Speaker 2: to start taking players off the field that have contributed
- 7:58Speaker 2: to you to a and two start. So if you
- 8:01Speaker 2: trade for Jalen Phillips, that means that Klevon Chason is
- 8:06Speaker 2: probably not playing as much anymore. If you trade for Ashijaheed,
- 8:10Speaker 2: that probably means Pop Douglas, who just had his first
- 8:12Speaker 2: one hundred yard game, is not playing as much anymore.
- 8:16Speaker 2: And neither one of those guys have done anything wrong.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You know, Chason's been on a little bit of a heater.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Pop just had a career game last week, and so
- 8:24Speaker 2: I think that there was an element of how much
- 8:27Speaker 2: better is this truly going to make us in the
- 8:31Speaker 2: short term, and is that worth sacrificing potentially changing up
- 8:36Speaker 2: the juju in the locker room, the chemistry, the vibes
- 8:39Speaker 2: in the locker room. So again, if you're frustrated, I
- 8:43Speaker 2: get it. It would have been nice to be able
- 8:46Speaker 2: to talk about and write about and break down film
- 8:48Speaker 2: on a new Patriot trade. I want to go over
- 8:51Speaker 2: some of the names that were dealt and whether we
- 8:53Speaker 2: would have or wouldn't have and that sort of thing.
- 8:56Speaker 2: But my big picture takeaway from this trade deadline from
- 8:59Speaker 2: the Patriot It's is that I think that they're trying
- 9:03Speaker 2: to build a sustainable winner and going for it this
- 9:06Speaker 2: year by investing in rentals and things like that. Yes,
- 9:11Speaker 2: it could have worked, and they could have had a
- 9:13Speaker 2: commander's like running gone to the AFC Championship game, and
- 9:15Speaker 2: that would have looked great, But would it have been
- 9:19Speaker 2: the right thing for the long term. They probably decided no,
- 9:23Speaker 2: And I can understand their thinking. What's just your big
- 9:26Speaker 2: picture takeaway here on the deadline?
- 9:28Speaker 1: So I I never thought they were getting a starting
- 9:33Speaker 1: caliber player because those guys don't move with the trade deadline,
- 9:36Speaker 1: Like we can get into the Sauce Gardner deal a
- 9:38Speaker 1: little bit, and so like that's it's Haley's commet that
- 9:43Speaker 1: you get a deal like that at the trade deadline.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I was using the Von Miller trade as a comp
- 9:47Speaker 1: last week. That was what two, So you really don't
- 9:51Speaker 1: see moves like that. But you know, I was a
- 9:54Speaker 1: little surprised they didn't add depth depth on the edge,
- 9:57Speaker 1: depth at running back depth. It's safety in there, but
- 10:01Speaker 1: outside of Kyle Duggar, no safety has moved. So I
- 10:04Speaker 1: don't know that there was a market there for them
- 10:06Speaker 1: to do that. So there was one. Yeah, So I
- 10:10Speaker 1: mean those are some spots that now you look at
- 10:12Speaker 1: and I don't want to say they're outright thin, but
- 10:17Speaker 1: it's kind of like we talked about when when they
- 10:19Speaker 1: Cutch Bill Peppers at the start of the season, you're
- 10:22Speaker 1: you're putting rookies or young players who are unproven and
- 10:26Speaker 1: you're potentially front facing them. Right, they need a fourth
- 10:29Speaker 1: edge guy. You kind of use four over the course
- 10:31Speaker 1: of a game. So that's either going to be Elijah Ponder,
- 10:35Speaker 1: who's the guy, Kayla Murphy or Braden Swinson coming up
- 10:38Speaker 1: from the practice squad, like one of those three guys
- 10:40Speaker 1: now is going to be an increased role. And maybe
- 10:42Speaker 1: they looked at it and said, we could trade a
- 10:44Speaker 1: six for whoever, name it a backup edge rusher, or
- 10:48Speaker 1: we have these young players, we want to see what
- 10:50Speaker 1: they can do. We're going to create a role for
- 10:51Speaker 1: We're going to create an opportunity for him. It's safety,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you know, Richie Grant, John Saunders. Does it open up
- 10:57Speaker 1: a role for those guys running back? The little differ
- 11:00Speaker 1: because some of the guys that you would put in
- 11:02Speaker 1: that category are already playing right Terrell Jennings, because the injuries.
- 11:06Speaker 1: If Romandre's good and that was just a one week
- 11:09Speaker 1: injury and he's back, then it's it makes a little
- 11:12Speaker 1: more sense, you know. And we don't know. We'll see
- 11:14Speaker 1: if he's a practice today, if Ramondre's banged up, then
- 11:18Speaker 1: maybe there's a little more to that. So you know,
- 11:20Speaker 1: if somebody gets hurt now they are going to be
- 11:22Speaker 1: in a spot where you look at it and you say,
- 11:24Speaker 1: well they you know, maybe could have used the body there.
- 11:26Speaker 1: But just like you know again when they cut Jabrill Peppers,
- 11:30Speaker 1: my big take was, well, Craig Woodson, you're in the spotlight.
- 11:35Speaker 1: They got to really, they got to really believe in
- 11:36Speaker 1: Craig Woodson to fill this role. And he's an unknown,
- 11:39Speaker 1: you know, he was a third round or fourth round pick,
- 11:43Speaker 1: like they collected him, but just we hadn't seen him
- 11:44Speaker 1: in the NFL. So I think you might see some
- 11:46Speaker 1: of those guys, and you know what, if Elijah Ponder
- 11:48Speaker 1: or Braden Swinston or Caleb Murphy step up and play solid,
- 11:52Speaker 1: they're gonna look really smart. If not, it's gonna be
- 11:54Speaker 1: a second guest. But I was a little surprised they
- 11:57Speaker 1: didn't add more depth. But I wonder if this is
- 11:59Speaker 1: a continued case, and Mike Rabel talked about it last week.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Even though there's seven to two, this is a multi
- 12:04Speaker 1: year install of the program. I wonder if they looked
- 12:07Speaker 1: at it and said, you know, we have these young guys.
- 12:10Speaker 1: We invested a draft pick and Braden Swinson, Elijah Ponder
- 12:13Speaker 1: showed us a lot in the summer and he's played
- 12:15Speaker 1: a little bit here in NFL games. They go out,
- 12:17Speaker 1: they signed Caleb Murphy off waivers, guys that they you know,
- 12:19Speaker 1: they clearly even interest in let's get an opportunity to
- 12:22Speaker 1: get these guys on the field, start developing them, and
- 12:24Speaker 1: see what we're working with.
- 12:26Speaker 2: So a couple of things there. One, you know, I
- 12:28Speaker 2: wanted to name some names that actually did get traded,
- 12:31Speaker 2: and I understand that you could make the argument that
- 12:34Speaker 2: we'll make them an offer that you can't refuse and
- 12:36Speaker 2: just get the player right. But right you mentioned running back.
- 12:39Speaker 2: There were no running back trades. Yeah, not a single
- 12:42Speaker 2: running back movie.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I won't lie. I got my hopes up a little bit.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I did wonder if there was an element of, all right,
- 12:48Speaker 1: thee just one a third for Breese Hall. Nobody's offering
- 12:51Speaker 1: that could like a fourth and a six get it done.
- 12:54Speaker 1: But again, they weren't going to trade them in the division.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Sow doesn't get traded. Yeah, Paular didn't get traded. None
- 13:01Speaker 2: of you know, Taj Spears, you know, Jerome Ford, like,
- 13:05Speaker 2: none of these guys that we talked about that were
- 13:07Speaker 2: sort of depth running backs elsewhere that might.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Have The only running back who got dealt and I
- 13:12Speaker 1: think it was like a week ago. Cheffra is the
- 13:14Speaker 1: full list. I'll pull it up. I can't remember who was. Now,
- 13:17Speaker 1: there was one running back who got dealt like a
- 13:20Speaker 1: week ago.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Was there.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I went through the list, I saw it was Michael Carter.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Michael Carter is the corner.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Oh there's two Michael Carter's that's right.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah, Michael Carter's slock corner. Yeah.
- 13:32Speaker 1: No, so okay, So no running backs, no running backs up.
- 13:35Speaker 2: No running backs got traded. So again, I get you
- 13:38Speaker 2: could make the argument that, you know, if the Jets
- 13:40Speaker 2: are asking for a third for Breese Hall and they
- 13:42Speaker 2: would have traded him to the Patriots, and you know
- 13:45Speaker 2: this is a theoretically right and hypothetical, then just give
- 13:49Speaker 2: the third, like if you feel that way, you feel
- 13:50Speaker 2: that way. But nobody wanted to give the third for
- 13:53Speaker 2: Breese Hall unless he would have gotten traded. So Kansas City,
- 13:56Speaker 2: I think there was a reporting out there they offered
- 13:59Speaker 2: a fourth, the Jets wouldn't take it. So Bristol stays put.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Pollard stays put. No running backs were traded. So it's
- 14:08Speaker 2: hard for me to sit here and second guess, but
- 14:10Speaker 2: why didn't you trade for running back? When nobody traded
- 14:12Speaker 2: for running back? None of the guys moved at Edge Rusher.
- 14:16Speaker 2: More guys moved than I think there's more of a
- 14:17Speaker 2: case here. Obviously, we've already talked about it.
- 14:19Speaker 1: This is the one for me that like, if you're
- 14:21Speaker 1: gonna make a case, this is this is it.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so we already talked about Jalen Phillips, Joe Tyron,
- 14:27Speaker 2: Shayanka moved that player weird stuff, Like I thought he
- 14:31Speaker 2: was like having a really good start in Tampa. I
- 14:35Speaker 2: remember them playing Tampa with Brady was what twenty one,
- 14:38Speaker 2: and he had a great game and was looking good
- 14:41Speaker 2: as a rusher. Then he fizzles out in Tampa, goes
- 14:44Speaker 2: to Cleveland, doesn't really catch on there, gets traded by
- 14:46Speaker 2: the Browns. Jamad Jones got traded by Tennessee. Now he
- 14:51Speaker 2: did not overlap with Rabel in Tennessee, so that's not
- 14:54Speaker 2: it's not a Rabel player, but but it was a
- 14:56Speaker 2: tight fit. Yep, I agree, And a Daufe Away got
- 15:02Speaker 2: traded like a week ago, so that's another edge rusher.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Jamat Jones, I think is probably the one that if
- 15:09Speaker 2: you were looking for that third guy right that hit
- 15:11Speaker 2: the mold and maybe is a little bit more pass
- 15:14Speaker 2: rush juice than like Anthony Jennings. That was probably the
- 15:17Speaker 2: one trade that they could have made. And I think
- 15:20Speaker 2: that it was like a fifth or sixth from for
- 15:23Speaker 2: Jamont Jones. But uh, you know, at the end of
- 15:26Speaker 2: the day, that list is not you know, outside of
- 15:29Speaker 2: Jalen Phillips, who I already wouldn't necessarily have traded a
- 15:33Speaker 2: third for Jalen Phillips, And I don't know if the
- 15:34Speaker 2: Dolphins would have traded them here to begin with. It's
- 15:37Speaker 2: not exactly a star studied group. And I would just say,
- 15:40Speaker 2: like the other thing too, with the edge rushers. A
- 15:43Speaker 2: year ago this time, you know, we were all pretty high
- 15:46Speaker 2: on Anthony Jennings. Yeah, Andrey James is still here. Now.
- 15:49Speaker 2: I get that he's not pass rusher, he's not third
- 15:51Speaker 2: down player. I get that. But it's not like they
- 15:55Speaker 2: have no NFL bodies behind Chase On and Landry. They
- 15:59Speaker 2: just don't have the guy. They don't have a guy
- 16:01Speaker 2: that fits their mold. But if they had to lean
- 16:05Speaker 2: more on Anthony Jennings at least on first and second down,
- 16:07Speaker 2: they could, Like I don't think he's a terrible I think.
- 16:09Speaker 1: He can play on early downs. It's that I think
- 16:11Speaker 1: that that third pass rush spot's gonna be situational. It's
- 16:14Speaker 1: Jennings on on early downs, another guy in passing downs.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I think it's the opposite. You said they have an
- 16:18Speaker 1: NFL guy, they don't have their guys that you said, Yes,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I think it's kind of the opposite. They have a
- 16:23Speaker 1: couple of their guys, whether it's Ponder or Swinson. We
- 16:26Speaker 1: just don't know what there is NFL players. We haven't
- 16:29Speaker 1: seen it.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I just don't know if those guys are you can't count, you.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Know, And that's that's the risk you take here. We
- 16:34Speaker 1: don't know. But again I go back to like Craig Woodson,
- 16:37Speaker 1: they cut to Bill Peppers, and it's a little different
- 16:39Speaker 1: because Craig Woodson was starting. We're talking about it depth
- 16:41Speaker 1: and most rotational role here. But I wonder if there's
- 16:44Speaker 1: an element if they just feel good about the players
- 16:47Speaker 1: they have, and why give up a draft pick when
- 16:49Speaker 1: you know we use a fifth round pick on Swinson
- 16:51Speaker 1: or we like what Elijah Ponder showed us this summer,
- 16:53Speaker 1: and and you know, you're not going to bury those
- 16:56Speaker 1: guys forever, right, They got to be here for a reason.
- 16:59Speaker 1: And maybe they just figure we you know, we've invested
- 17:01Speaker 1: in these guys, We're gonna we're gonna push them up
- 17:03Speaker 1: into a bigger role.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Okay, So last thing on the trade deadline is. I know,
- 17:06Speaker 2: I'm probably I'm gonna take he for defending them on
- 17:09Speaker 2: the trade deadline. I don't care. I just I said
- 17:11Speaker 2: it last week with the Commanders, Like the Commanders were
- 17:14Speaker 2: in the exact same position the Patriots were, and they
- 17:16Speaker 2: had a really good free agency class, their quarterback hit
- 17:20Speaker 2: and they were you know, won twelve games and maybe
- 17:23Speaker 2: to the NFC Championship game, and they've taken a step
- 17:25Speaker 2: back now. It's a lot of it's because Daniels is hurt.
- 17:28Speaker 2: I'll all concede that point. But at the same time,
- 17:32Speaker 2: you know, I didn't love what they were doing roster wise,
- 17:35Speaker 2: like trading picks for Deebo Samuel, trading picks for Marshawn Lattimore,
- 17:39Speaker 2: trading picks for older players that I thought were a
- 17:43Speaker 2: little bit over the hill and weren't necessarily going to
- 17:46Speaker 2: help them in the long run. The Patriots are doing
- 17:49Speaker 2: it differently, and we'll see who ends up being the
- 17:52Speaker 2: more sustainable team, you know, moving forward, it's a very
- 17:55Speaker 2: similar situation, you know, Dan Quinn, Cliff Kingsbury, Mike Rabel,
- 18:00Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels, Jaden Daniels, Drake May Like it's really kind
- 18:04Speaker 2: of a carbon copy of one another, and we'll see
- 18:06Speaker 2: which proach ends up working. Before we move on to
- 18:09Speaker 2: the game, the Falcons game and stuff, I do want
- 18:12Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about the Jets and what
- 18:14Speaker 2: they did yesterday.
- 18:15Speaker 1: New York Jets. So I think the Jets won the deadline.
- 18:20Speaker 2: I agree. And I've been talking about this with the
- 18:23Speaker 2: Jets for a couple of years now because maybe this
- 18:26Speaker 2: is just a little bit of the Patriots fan that's
- 18:28Speaker 2: still in me. But I kept on hearing with the Jets,
- 18:31Speaker 2: especially when Rogers got there, how great their roster was,
- 18:35Speaker 2: and how their roster was loaded, and all they needed
- 18:37Speaker 2: was a quarterback and they were a quarterback away and this,
- 18:40Speaker 2: that and the other thing. And at some point that
- 18:45Speaker 2: loaded roster had to start winning games, right, Like, you know,
- 18:48Speaker 2: you can't every year tell me how loaded your roster is.
- 18:51Speaker 2: And then I look at the end of this of
- 18:52Speaker 2: the year, I look at the standings, and he won
- 18:54Speaker 2: six games, Like at some point, the roster is the
- 18:56Speaker 2: roster like you are what you are, as Bill Parcells
- 18:59Speaker 2: would say. Right. So I looked at this roster and
- 19:03Speaker 2: everybody kept on telling me how loaded they were. Defensively,
- 19:07Speaker 2: they haven't played a game. Yet without Quinn and Sauce
- 19:09Speaker 2: Gardner their thirtieth in DVOA on defense this year, they're
- 19:13Speaker 2: one of the worst defenses in football. They were one
- 19:15Speaker 2: of the worst defenses in football last year too, so
- 19:18Speaker 2: they haven't been a good defense really for two years now.
- 19:22Speaker 2: And yet I keep getting told that Sace Gardner is
- 19:25Speaker 2: this all pro caliber corner and Quinn Williams is this
- 19:28Speaker 2: all Pro caliber for defensive tackle. And we can talk
- 19:31Speaker 2: about coaching and system and all that, but Robert Sala
- 19:34Speaker 2: has left New York and he has gone to San Francisco,
- 19:37Speaker 2: and he's got that defense playing pretty well right with
- 19:39Speaker 2: the forty nine ers. So maybe he couldn't head coach,
- 19:42Speaker 2: but he could definitely coach defense. And I'd say the
- 19:44Speaker 2: same thing about Aaron Glenn. Aaron Glenn was a great
- 19:47Speaker 2: defensive coordinator for Detroit. Maybe he's not a head coach,
- 19:50Speaker 2: but he can coach defense. So I actually really liked
- 19:54Speaker 2: what the Jets did because I think the Jets looked
- 19:57Speaker 2: at it and said, this corp that everybody keeps hyping
- 20:01Speaker 2: as this really talented corps has one Jack. So how
- 20:04Speaker 2: much longer are we going to sit here and say
- 20:06Speaker 2: that we have all this talent on our roster and
- 20:09Speaker 2: act like Sauce Gardner and Quentin Williams and you know,
- 20:13Speaker 2: Bryce Hall and Garrett Wilson and all these young players
- 20:16Speaker 2: that we have that are really high on how long
- 20:18Speaker 2: are we going to act like this team is loaded
- 20:21Speaker 2: and then go out there and start the season one
- 20:23Speaker 2: and seven. The other thing that I really like about
- 20:25Speaker 2: what the Jets did, now I'll put this caveat in there.
- 20:28Speaker 2: It's the Jets, so they're going to f it up.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Well, so I I have a take on this. Keep going.
- 20:34Speaker 2: They are loaded with first round picks for a quarterback.
- 20:37Speaker 2: So whether they want to draft twours, yeah, whether they
- 20:40Speaker 2: want to draft the quarterback or they want to trade
- 20:43Speaker 2: for a veteran quarterback, they have all this AMMO, and
- 20:45Speaker 2: the Jets, you know, just kind of wrapped up this take.
- 20:48Speaker 2: They were going nowhere with this corps and they were
- 20:51Speaker 2: going nowhere without a quarterback. So what they've done is
- 20:54Speaker 2: they've put themselves in position to restock the cores and
- 20:58Speaker 2: probably get a quarterback. Now it's the Jets, so they'll
- 21:01Speaker 2: they'll screw it up. They'll find a way to mess
- 21:03Speaker 2: it up.
- 21:03Speaker 1: So somebody points it out like they had a similar setup.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I think in twenty twenty one. It was after they
- 21:09Speaker 1: traded Darnold Jamal Adams. Oh okay, and remember they got
- 21:13Speaker 1: some firsts for him and they obviously that didn't work.
- 21:17Speaker 1: But yeah, in classic Jets fashion, So they're in terrific
- 21:20Speaker 1: position now to add a quarterback. The next two drafts
- 21:24Speaker 1: quarterback wise, are eh. Like, there's some guys some people
- 21:30Speaker 1: might like, it's not twenty twenty four where it's okay, well,
- 21:35Speaker 1: you know this Kleb Williamstrake May, Jaydon Daniels emerges, right
- 21:38Speaker 1: this year's draft definitely, isn't that. Some people really like
- 21:41Speaker 1: Fernando Mendoz and there's a lot to light. Yeah, some
- 21:43Speaker 1: people like Dante More there's a lot to light. But
- 21:46Speaker 1: those guys are traded. Those guys don't have the pedigree
- 21:49Speaker 1: that you expect from the typical top draft picks. And
- 21:52Speaker 1: then depending on who comes out and who goes to school,
- 21:54Speaker 1: you know, twenty twenty seven, Julian Sayan's look good Ohio State.
- 21:57Speaker 1: He's away. But they're the Jets.
- 22:00Speaker 2: They're not drafting a quarterback.
- 22:01Speaker 1: But they're the Jets.
- 22:02Speaker 2: They're not drafting a quarterback.
- 22:04Speaker 1: But drafting the quarterback might be the wrong move based
- 22:07Speaker 1: on how say.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Nothing was gonna happen at the deadline. So I'm not
- 22:09Speaker 2: really on a great run right now. It takes, but
- 22:12Speaker 2: you I I would be Woody Johnson has drafted Sam
- 22:18Speaker 2: Darnold and Zach Wilson and watch it blow up in
- 22:20Speaker 2: his face. Yeah, And I just I would all, you know.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Adding to that, Aaron Glenn was in Detroit. They just
- 22:27Speaker 2: traded for Jared Goff and had that really work out.
- 22:30Speaker 2: I just look at it, and I don't know which
- 22:32Speaker 2: quarterback it's gonna be, uh, but the reclamation project is
- 22:36Speaker 2: in vogue now. They're trying it like sort of like
- 22:39Speaker 2: a I don't know, like a C plus version of
- 22:43Speaker 2: it with Justin Fields, and it's not going so hard.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Right. You actually have to fix the quarterback.
- 22:47Speaker 2: But you also need to trade for a quarterback that's
- 22:50Speaker 2: better than show.
- 22:50Speaker 1: So who's who's been like bench recently, who's on the outs?
- 22:53Speaker 2: Who's I don't know, maybe some guy in Arizona.
- 22:57Speaker 1: That would be. I could see it.
- 23:00Speaker 2: That's the way I look at it, Like I as
- 23:02Speaker 2: soon as Kyler got benched with in Arizona, I actually
- 23:06Speaker 2: thought there was a chance that Jets might trade for him.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Now interesting, Well, no, because they're clearly trying and bought
- 23:12Speaker 1: him out.
- 23:12Speaker 2: But right, so, but then they ended up trading everybody.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins and they have the money for it. No,
- 23:18Speaker 1: it's the Jets. He's terrible, Kirk Cousins, Kyler Murray, Yes,
- 23:23Speaker 1: who whatever the you see? Andy Dalton's probably too old
- 23:25Speaker 1: to qualify for this. Yeah, do the Jets try to
- 23:28Speaker 1: make Joe Flacco work again?
- 23:29Speaker 2: No? Too old.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Cleveland's got a whole bunch of quarterbacks that could be
- 23:33Speaker 1: reclamation projects. Who else do we guys?
- 23:38Speaker 2: He's Kyler?
- 23:40Speaker 1: Do the Jags quit on Trevor Lawrence?
- 23:43Speaker 2: I mean that would be a crazy blockbuster. I don't
- 23:47Speaker 2: think that's Geno.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Smith's probably too old to qualify for this. Oh, I
- 23:52Speaker 1: got a good one. I got a good one, Evan
- 23:56Speaker 1: Tua in the division? Well what if Miami he like
- 24:00Speaker 1: cuts them? Maybe also Adam who cares in the division?
- 24:05Speaker 1: If you're the Dolphins and the Jets off for your
- 24:06Speaker 1: first round pick for Tua? Yeah, I'm just I'm going through,
- 24:10Speaker 1: like the list of starting quarterbacks here, trying figure out
- 24:11Speaker 1: who the backups are. Russ Wilson Jameis Winston. Uh, we
- 24:17Speaker 1: already have the answer. Well, let's be throw up Mac
- 24:19Speaker 1: Jones or Brock Party Rockberdy, Who're not bad? Whoever comes
- 24:23Speaker 1: out of their rock Party Rock, Party's not Niners want
- 24:26Speaker 1: to unload that contract. Jets have all this money now
- 24:28Speaker 1: they trade it.
- 24:28Speaker 2: That's a good one.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Okay, Seahawks don't really have anybody. Oh no, who's theeks
- 24:33Speaker 1: back up? Drew not Drew Locke doesn't qualify as that.
- 24:35Speaker 2: It's Party and Kyler are two good ones.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I'm putting two on there. Okay, I'm putting two on there.
- 24:42Speaker 2: So if we want to put those three, one of
- 24:44Speaker 2: those three, if I had to, if I had to
- 24:46Speaker 2: venture a guest, one of those three will be a
- 24:48Speaker 2: Jets quarterback next year.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Love it and love it.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I kind of like it. I'd love to see Kyler
- 24:54Speaker 2: twice a year. He's not going to beat the Patriots,
- 24:55Speaker 2: so it just be fun a lot.
- 24:56Speaker 1: You were, you were a big Kyle. I love Kyler.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I still love him.
- 25:00Speaker 1: What more? Good one from the YouTube chat here? Okay,
- 25:03Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson, No, no, he is a reclamation project.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Not good enough. No, I'm talking about like perty's made
- 25:11Speaker 2: a Super Bowl he's a starting calendar quarterback. Kyler is
- 25:14Speaker 2: a starting caluber quarterback. Two was a starting caliber quarterback.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Richardson was top five pick. Maybe they'll trade a first
- 25:20Speaker 1: round pick for him. But what if they look at
- 25:22Speaker 1: it and they say, all right, it's not a good
- 25:23Speaker 1: quarterback draft. We're gonna hammer all the other needs. We're
- 25:27Speaker 1: gonna actually make the other needs, and then trade a
- 25:29Speaker 1: second round pick for Anthony Richardson, a second round pick
- 25:32Speaker 1: for it or whatever it is, a fourth round pick, whatever,
- 25:34Speaker 1: not a first round pick.
- 25:36Speaker 2: It's it's just justin feels all over again.
- 25:38Speaker 1: The Jets.
- 25:39Speaker 2: No, the Jets the day, I would venture to guess
- 25:43Speaker 2: that they would go into the draft and screw up
- 25:45Speaker 2: the draft pick again before they traded for like a
- 25:49Speaker 2: true project like Anthony Richardson. If they're going to trade
- 25:51Speaker 2: for a veteran quarterback, it's going to be an established veteran.
- 25:54Speaker 2: The only difference between the Rogers thing and this will
- 25:57Speaker 2: be age like they'll try to trade for a younger,
- 26:00Speaker 2: established veteran quarterback.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I'm still putting two on the list.
- 26:03Speaker 2: That's fine. I'm good for you Jets, Like, don't overvalue
- 26:09Speaker 2: your players like the Colts are going for it. Good
- 26:12Speaker 2: for them too, but too first round Pa and the
- 26:15Speaker 2: first and the second for Quentin Williams. I'm making those trades.
- 26:18Speaker 1: How does sauce fit in that defense, do you? Uh?
- 26:22Speaker 2: Probably a little bit like they're very disguise heavy, like
- 26:24Speaker 2: they did a lot of you know, lou Ana Rumo
- 26:26Speaker 2: is a big disguiser. I think the reason why and
- 26:29Speaker 2: I do I guess I can give this a little
- 26:31Speaker 2: bit of a Sauce take here, but I do want
- 26:33Speaker 2: to move.
- 26:33Speaker 1: This is relevant to the Patriots. Well, look, the Patriots
- 26:35Speaker 1: and Coults are Everybody say Patriots don't do anything. Other
- 26:38Speaker 1: teams got better. There's some truth to that. I mean,
- 26:40Speaker 1: the Bills didn't make a move, the Chiefs didn't make
- 26:42Speaker 1: a move, the Texas didn't make a move, the Steelers
- 26:44Speaker 1: made a minor move they traded for Kyle. But this
- 26:46Speaker 1: is the one team at the top that went for it.
- 26:49Speaker 1: So it is relevant to the Patriots, and I I look,
- 26:52Speaker 1: I think Saw is a good player. He's going from
- 26:54Speaker 1: like the least disguised defense to the most disguised defense
- 26:59Speaker 1: and that feels like adjustment.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Yeah, well, but I think it's an adjustment in his
- 27:02Speaker 2: favor because here My whole thing was Sauce, and I'll
- 27:06Speaker 2: admit that this is maybe a little bit of Christian
- 27:07Speaker 2: Gonzales bias, But like Sauce is, a is his own corner.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Zas plays.
- 27:12Speaker 1: We've always been man over zone on this show, going
- 27:14Speaker 1: back before Sauce Organzalez.
- 27:17Speaker 2: He plays on his side of the field. He will
- 27:19Speaker 2: man up on his side of the field on the
- 27:21Speaker 2: back side on you know some occasions in their old
- 27:24Speaker 2: system under Salah, you know, running the the Mabel coverages
- 27:27Speaker 2: like the Seattle used to do with with Richard Sherman.
- 27:30Speaker 2: But like it's his own defense, it's a Cover three defense.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Uh.
- 27:34Speaker 2: The defense that they're playing now with Aaron Glenn. I
- 27:37Speaker 2: haven't looked at all the numbers, but just based off
- 27:40Speaker 2: of what he did in Detroit and what I think
- 27:42Speaker 2: he's doing with the Jets, they are a blitzman defense,
- 27:46Speaker 2: so they are an aggressive blitzman defense, and I've just
- 27:50Speaker 2: never thought that Sauce was in a great man coverage corner.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I'm not saying he can't play it at a decent clip.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I'm just saying, like he's not a Christian Gonzalez, Stefan
- 28:00Speaker 2: Hill More, Darrell Rebis, I'm going to shut down my
- 28:02Speaker 2: guy man coverage corner. So I think going to lou
- 28:06Speaker 2: is probably better for him, and with Indianapolis because it
- 28:09Speaker 2: is more of a disguise zone. We're going to show
- 28:12Speaker 2: this picture, change it, that sort of thing, which probably
- 28:15Speaker 2: fits him. He's going to be able to play his
- 28:17Speaker 2: side of the fields. He's not going to be traveling
- 28:20Speaker 2: with receivers and things like that. But I think that
- 28:24Speaker 2: the crack started to show with Sauce once the Jets
- 28:28Speaker 2: started to play more man coverage. They played a little
- 28:31Speaker 2: bit more of it last year with Olbrick and Sala,
- 28:33Speaker 2: and then they've played a lot more of it this
- 28:35Speaker 2: year with Darren Glenn. And that's just not his skill set.
- 28:39Speaker 2: It's not what he's best at. You know. He reminds
- 28:41Speaker 2: me a lot more of you know, the zone corners
- 28:43Speaker 2: of the of the past than the man guys. So
- 28:47Speaker 2: I think that it helps Sauce. I think it helps
- 28:49Speaker 2: the Colts certainly, because they were really needed corners.
- 28:53Speaker 1: They started thin there and they got banged up, and
- 28:56Speaker 1: they needed it to be this year. Not leonor who's
- 29:01Speaker 1: the corner that got hurt in the like pregame collision.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Oh, I know who you're talking about I I he's on.
- 29:08Speaker 2: He's on I R with a concussion.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Right, yeah, Travarious Ward Warren.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Yeah so I uh, I like it for the Colts
- 29:17Speaker 2: and I like it for the Jets. I guess we'll see.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I'm not a big Sauce Gardner fan. I never have been.
- 29:22Speaker 2: It's not my kind of player. Uh, but he if
- 29:25Speaker 2: he's used correctly, you know, you have him played the boundary,
- 29:28Speaker 2: just play his side of the field, you know, have
- 29:30Speaker 2: him a man up on verticals and then play you know,
- 29:33Speaker 2: a zone coverages most of the time. I think he
- 29:36Speaker 2: can be a good player. He is a good player.
- 29:38Speaker 1: How you feel being a quarterback or receiver in that division?
- 29:42Speaker 1: Now I got Sauce Gardner, You got Stingley in Houston,
- 29:45Speaker 1: Travis Hunter and.
- 29:46Speaker 2: James I think is awesome. I love Stingley, sting and Stingley.
- 29:50Speaker 1: That was that draft. Remember that was the debate. Who
- 29:52Speaker 1: was we were? We were early, but we were not wrong.
- 29:55Speaker 1: We're not wrong. But yeah, and then wait, who am
- 29:57Speaker 1: I missing there? So you got Stingley, you got Travis Hunter,
- 29:59Speaker 1: you got saw us. Uh Titans, Yeah, they'll get something.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I mean they have sneed, but he's a little older.
- 30:06Speaker 1: He's kind of dogging it right now, Well, they don't
- 30:08Speaker 1: need a quarterback, so if they're at the top of
- 30:09Speaker 1: the draft and you know, maybe they go corner up there.
- 30:13Speaker 2: So that's the trade deadline. I'm I'm sure that you
- 30:16Speaker 2: all have a lot of opinions, a lot of opinions
- 30:18Speaker 2: on this trade.
- 30:18Speaker 1: People or I don't remember people getting so worked up.
- 30:22Speaker 1: It's the NFL like it the NFL trade And this
- 30:25Speaker 1: is I'm somebody who loves all things NFL, all things football.
- 30:28Speaker 1: This is me, right, yeah, this is me who sits
- 30:30Speaker 1: down appointment viewing Hall of Fame game. The NFL trade
- 30:33Speaker 1: deadline to me, and it's getting Look, I will respect
- 30:37Speaker 1: it more when it becomes a bigger deal. And we've
- 30:40Speaker 1: come a little bit of a ways. It used to
- 30:41Speaker 1: be like two or three moves, you know, twenty over
- 30:44Speaker 1: the course of two, you know, two months or I
- 30:46Speaker 1: just say a month and a half. So there's a
- 30:48Speaker 1: little bit more there. But it's not. You can't treat
- 30:51Speaker 1: it like the baseball, basketball, hockey deadlines because it's different.
- 30:54Speaker 1: It's fundamentally different. Getting a player in the loop mid season,
- 30:58Speaker 1: especially at certain positions in football, is just different than
- 31:02Speaker 1: doing it in other sports.
- 31:03Speaker 2: There's there seems to be every trade deadline, and I
- 31:06Speaker 2: meant to do this off the top of the show
- 31:08Speaker 2: because I'm sure i'll get blood to oblivion today. I said,
- 31:11Speaker 2: yesterday Jacobe Myers is going to be the biggest trade
- 31:13Speaker 2: of the day, and then thirty minutes later, Sascardner got traded.
- 31:16Speaker 2: So I was dead wrong about that, dead wrong, may Kulpa,
- 31:19Speaker 2: I was wrong.
- 31:21Speaker 1: It was more happened, And I guess it's Hallie's comment
- 31:23Speaker 1: like that's again the last pig. Although I forgot von
- 31:27Speaker 1: Miller didn't even go for a first round pick.
- 31:29Speaker 2: So I think it seems like there's one team that
- 31:33Speaker 2: will decide at this time of year that we're fire sailing.
- 31:36Speaker 2: A couple of years ago, it was Washington they traded
- 31:38Speaker 2: both their pass rushers, Chase Young. I was in Montes Sweat.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I always forget much sweat it is. They traded Montes
- 31:44Speaker 2: Sweat and Chase Young at the deadline. The year before
- 31:46Speaker 2: they drafted Jayden Daniels. The Jets decided to fire sale
- 31:50Speaker 2: this year, like there's always one team that decides to
- 31:53Speaker 2: make a splash and trade a star player that you're
- 31:56Speaker 2: not expecting but it's just not like those other deadlines
- 31:59Speaker 2: where there's like significant movement throughout the league.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Like you don't have the landscape of the league change.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Right right, And I still think you don't really have
- 32:09Speaker 2: it even now, Like Quentin Williams going to the Cowboys
- 32:12Speaker 2: isn't gonna.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Really Why did the Cowboys do that?
- 32:14Speaker 2: Because Jerry's like obsessed with making the micro Parsons trade
- 32:17Speaker 2: look like it was the smart move.
- 32:18Speaker 1: I mean, look, well, credit to the Patriots two strong
- 32:22Speaker 1: defensive tackles. Is that like the it thing? Now he's
- 32:24Speaker 1: trying to recreate Barmore and Million Williams with Kenny Clark
- 32:27Speaker 1: and Kenny Clark and Quentin Williams. But we'll get to
- 32:32Speaker 1: that after losing that game with the Cardinals and up
- 32:35Speaker 1: for first round pick as wild.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Okay, so let's let's talk a little bit of Falcons.
- 32:40Speaker 2: I'm not We'll try to be a little bit quicker
- 32:42Speaker 2: through this, since we did a lot of the trade
- 32:44Speaker 2: deadline stuff off the top of the show. Much talk
- 32:47Speaker 2: about from this game, But I do want to talk
- 32:49Speaker 2: a little bit of Drake may and I do want
- 32:51Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about the defense and what
- 32:54Speaker 2: they did with the defense. So I think my big
- 32:58Speaker 2: take with Drake May and I know that he's you know,
- 33:01Speaker 2: he's Drake May, Like we don't we don't criticize Drake
- 33:05Speaker 2: May now, right, we gotta that's our guy, that's that's
- 33:08Speaker 2: our quarterback. Right, you don't want to be uh, you know,
- 33:11Speaker 2: I get a lot of heat for criticizing Drake May.
- 33:14Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing that I'm watching with Drake
- 33:17Speaker 2: May over the last really since the start started with
- 33:21Speaker 2: the Tennessee game a little bit. It was just like
- 33:23Speaker 2: the last final hurdle of his development, Like he's thrown
- 33:28Speaker 2: the ball great. When his throws, when he's throwing the football,
- 33:32Speaker 2: when he's actually getting rid of the ball are have
- 33:34Speaker 2: been great. And I think his decisions of where he's
- 33:37Speaker 2: throwing the ball when he throws the ball have been great.
- 33:40Speaker 2: So that's still arrow way way up. Like he's still
- 33:43Speaker 2: making every single week. You know, this week touchdown to
- 33:47Speaker 2: Pop Douglas, the fifty eight yarder to Pop Douglas, The
- 33:50Speaker 2: twenty one yarder to Digs in the second half, I
- 33:53Speaker 2: thought was a great drive throw in between a couple zones,
- 33:56Speaker 2: like he's still making three or four big time threw
- 34:00Speaker 2: was a game every single week. And he's still basically
- 34:04Speaker 2: played winning football in this game for the most part,
- 34:07Speaker 2: you know, fifty point five qbr I had him basically
- 34:10Speaker 2: with an even plus minus split in terms of you know,
- 34:12Speaker 2: grading the film. So there's still a lot of good
- 34:15Speaker 2: things that he's doing. He's still playing at a reasonably
- 34:19Speaker 2: high level. But the last sort of mountain here for
- 34:22Speaker 2: him to climb as a quarterback, I think is managing
- 34:25Speaker 2: time in the pocket. You know, went to stay, went
- 34:28Speaker 2: to you know, go through his progressions, went to scramble,
- 34:32Speaker 2: went to throw the ball away, went to just cover
- 34:35Speaker 2: up and take the sack, like trying to figure out
- 34:38Speaker 2: And I think this is a byproduct of being a
- 34:42Speaker 2: young athletic quarterback who still kind of thinks that he's
- 34:46Speaker 2: the best athlete on the field all the time, which
- 34:48Speaker 2: he might be, frankly, but he's got to figure out
- 34:52Speaker 2: a little bit, you know better, how to manage his
- 34:55Speaker 2: time in the pocket. And the sacks are starting to
- 34:59Speaker 2: pile up. He's second in the league in sacks. He
- 35:02Speaker 2: is the third highest sack rate in the league right now,
- 35:05Speaker 2: over ten percent of his dropbacks into the sack. So
- 35:10Speaker 2: when you still you know, routinely into his credit, he
- 35:13Speaker 2: gets them out of long down and distances better than
- 35:16Speaker 2: any quarterback in the league. It's kind of uncanny how
- 35:18Speaker 2: he can take a sack on first and second down
- 35:20Speaker 2: and still move the chains is rare, But that's a
- 35:24Speaker 2: tough way to live in the NFL if you are
- 35:26Speaker 2: constantly playing in third and long eventually more times than not,
- 35:31Speaker 2: especially when you start to play against the better defenses,
- 35:34Speaker 2: that type of stuff starts to creep up and bite
- 35:38Speaker 2: you in the butt. When you're in third and long
- 35:41Speaker 2: against in Atlanta is a good defense. But when you're
- 35:43Speaker 2: in third and long in the playoffs against Buffalo or
- 35:45Speaker 2: Kansas City or Houston or you know, one of these
- 35:48Speaker 2: good defenses that's going to be in the AFC Chargers,
- 35:51Speaker 2: you know whatever, that's a lot different than when it's
- 35:55Speaker 2: early November at home against Atlanta at a one o'clock game.
- 35:59Speaker 2: So they have to he has to cut down on
- 36:03Speaker 2: how much time you know, he's he's got to make
- 36:06Speaker 2: better decisions in the pocket. And you know, I could
- 36:09Speaker 2: go through examples I did yesterday on PU that we
- 36:13Speaker 2: can discuss. But the whole point is is just it's
- 36:16Speaker 2: not necessarily all the same of Okay, he's holding the
- 36:20Speaker 2: ball too long or he's leaving. It's kind of both,
- 36:23Speaker 2: like he's just it's just management in general of when
- 36:26Speaker 2: is it clean pocket? When can I go one, two,
- 36:29Speaker 2: three through a progression because I'm cleaning the pocket, versus
- 36:32Speaker 2: I have to get out in this instance because there's
- 36:35Speaker 2: pressure here. So that that's just my take on Drake
- 36:38Speaker 2: May right now. I'm not alarmed. I'm not concerned. I
- 36:42Speaker 2: don't have any big picture concerns about where he's at
- 36:47Speaker 2: at all. But this is something that we can point
- 36:51Speaker 2: to and just say, as a second year quarterback who's
- 36:54Speaker 2: still technically developing, you know, this is kind of his
- 36:57Speaker 2: last hurdle. Is he can't be taking six sacks a game.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just too So I do wonder if and look,
- 37:07Speaker 1: we had talked about the pace he was playing out
- 37:09Speaker 1: was absurd, like he was going to take a step back,
- 37:11Speaker 1: And the reality is if that game represents his step
- 37:14Speaker 1: back game, he's gonna be fine. Got to do a
- 37:16Speaker 1: bad job of holding onto the football. The second fumble
- 37:18Speaker 1: really is you know, he just gets bumped and let's
- 37:21Speaker 1: go of it. The first one, he'd I think maybe
- 37:24Speaker 1: he got in a roll and he got a little
- 37:26Speaker 1: bit comfortable. He talked about this after the game. Some
- 37:28Speaker 1: bad habits came back. Remember he had a fumble like
- 37:30Speaker 1: that last year. I think it was in London where
- 37:33Speaker 1: he tried to stiff arm the the defender off of him. Yeah,
- 37:37Speaker 1: and fumble the ball. Like it's almost a carbon copy
- 37:39Speaker 1: if you go back and look at it. I do
- 37:41Speaker 1: wonder if some of the one in the preseason this
- 37:43Speaker 1: preseason's right, Yeah, I do wonder if the higher sack
- 37:49Speaker 1: rate and the lower turnover rate are related. And he
- 37:52Speaker 1: talked about this in the past, that he needs to
- 37:55Speaker 1: know when to give up on the play and go down.
- 37:56Speaker 1: And there are times when you like, we're gonna get
- 37:59Speaker 1: on him for taking two many sacks, But at the
- 38:00Speaker 1: same time, you can say that play at the end
- 38:02Speaker 1: of the half, he should have taken the sack, right,
- 38:05Speaker 1: they blow the protection, he's he's dead to rights, like
- 38:08Speaker 1: go down or at least get outside thrown away, but
- 38:10Speaker 1: like take the sack there.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Well, that's why you know I brought up managing time, right,
- 38:14Speaker 2: Like it's not necessarily about always getting rid of the
- 38:18Speaker 2: ball quickly. It's just in that exact instance, like the
- 38:21Speaker 2: management there, yeah, is just take the sack, right.
- 38:24Speaker 1: So I do feel like the high and look, the
- 38:26Speaker 1: offensive line is absolutely responsible for some of it, where
- 38:28Speaker 1: especially the interior, we're starting to see them get picked
- 38:31Speaker 1: on a little bit more here, Mike oh and Win
- 38:33Speaker 1: who's had a couple of rough games, you know, going
- 38:35Speaker 1: back the last month or so. But I do look
- 38:39Speaker 1: at it and say, okay, well, he's taking more sacks,
- 38:41Speaker 1: he's turning the ball over less. I do think those
- 38:44Speaker 1: two things are related. Ideally you're doing neither. This isn't
- 38:47Speaker 1: necessarily defended. I just think that's part of the reason
- 38:49Speaker 1: the sack number is so high is because he's he's
- 38:52Speaker 1: doing a better job of not throwing these ridiculous mid
- 38:55Speaker 1: contact interceptions like he was doing at times last year.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Now to your points, managing the pocket. It's cutting both
- 39:01Speaker 1: out and being better of because there's also been times
- 39:03Speaker 1: some of these sacks he is I think like two
- 39:05Speaker 1: or three of these this year where he gets run
- 39:08Speaker 1: out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage, and you
- 39:10Speaker 1: can't do that as a quarterback like just you know,
- 39:13Speaker 1: well he did in this game, and I almost he
- 39:15Speaker 1: did want to applau like he threw the ball. He
- 39:18Speaker 1: threw it right, like the first time. You want to
- 39:20Speaker 1: buy that time you have, you want to buy time.
- 39:22Speaker 1: You have as much time as there is for you
- 39:25Speaker 1: to get from the pocket to the sideline. There's no reason.
- 39:28Speaker 1: This is all quarterback. I ripped to it for this.
- 39:30Speaker 1: He did it against the Patriots in that game in
- 39:31Speaker 1: Week two. There's no reason a quarterback should ever go
- 39:35Speaker 1: out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage, like just
- 39:37Speaker 1: because there's no grounding at that point. Just flicking forward
- 39:40Speaker 1: out of bounds out of it. And now look he
- 39:42Speaker 1: did this last year in Chicago. He didn't throw it
- 39:44Speaker 1: far enough and he got picked off. So you got
- 39:46Speaker 1: to make sure you're getting it out there.
- 39:47Speaker 2: It's not when he's out inside the pocket, you know,
- 39:51Speaker 2: like the one on Yeah, they cut the ones that
- 39:53Speaker 2: you're talking about. You can just chuck that thing like
- 39:55Speaker 2: he's outside the pocket and.
- 39:56Speaker 1: That that's what I'm saying. Well, you got to make
- 39:57Speaker 1: sure you really chuck it. Remember he tried it last
- 39:59Speaker 1: year in Chicago.
- 40:00Speaker 2: That was like more towards inside the middle of the.
- 40:02Speaker 1: That's fair like, So that that's that's one for me.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Where like he can cut back is throw those away
- 40:08Speaker 1: or even you know, he'll get dragged down way outside
- 40:11Speaker 1: the pocket, like just throw those ways. Got to be
- 40:13Speaker 1: more comfortable throwing the ball away.
- 40:15Speaker 2: So I really I thought in this game, and this
- 40:18Speaker 2: was similar to the game against Tennessee. I'm not saying
- 40:21Speaker 2: that he I think the term one read quarterback comes
- 40:26Speaker 2: up and people get spooked by that. I'm not saying
- 40:29Speaker 2: that he does this all the time. Like he definitely
- 40:31Speaker 2: has evidence of going through the progressions and uh and
- 40:35Speaker 2: not being you know, a one and run quarterback. But
- 40:38Speaker 2: there are instances on this film where it felt like
- 40:41Speaker 2: he was one and run a little bit too often.
- 40:44Speaker 2: You know, he's looking down, you know, at the right
- 40:46Speaker 2: side at the initial you know, reading the progression. It's
- 40:48Speaker 2: not there. And then his next instinct instead of just
- 40:51Speaker 2: progressing from you know, right to left to Stefan Diggs
- 40:54Speaker 2: wide open in the middle of the field, his next
- 40:56Speaker 2: instinct is eyes down running. And what I see a
- 40:59Speaker 2: lot of his sacks happen, you know, two or three
- 41:03Speaker 2: in this game and then probably two or three in
- 41:05Speaker 2: the Titans game as well, is him running into the
- 41:07Speaker 2: line of scrimmage because he's trying to get out of
- 41:10Speaker 2: the pocket through the middle of the field and in
- 41:12Speaker 2: the pocket collapses on him. So those sacks go down.
- 41:15Speaker 2: I know, you know a lot of people talk about
- 41:17Speaker 2: this as well. Those sacks go down as like two
- 41:20Speaker 2: or three yard sacks. They're not those backbreaking like eight yard,
- 41:24Speaker 2: nine yard, ten yard sacks. So it's like less of
- 41:27Speaker 2: a burden I suppose on the offense. But I want
- 41:31Speaker 2: to see him going through his progression right Like when
- 41:34Speaker 2: he's looking down the right side at the initial read,
- 41:37Speaker 2: it's not there. You want to see him come back
- 41:40Speaker 2: to the middle of the field because that's the way
- 41:41Speaker 2: the play is designed. So like he has, you know,
- 41:44Speaker 2: on the right hand side, he's got a hunter Henry
- 41:46Speaker 2: on a little option. It's not there. Stefan Diggs is
- 41:50Speaker 2: going to come from the back side of the formation
- 41:52Speaker 2: and he's going to cross right into his line of
- 41:54Speaker 2: vision from the backside of the formation. Because the goal
- 41:57Speaker 2: is for him to just go from right to middle.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I'm not asking him go right all the way to
- 42:02Speaker 2: the left side of the field. You're just asking him
- 42:04Speaker 2: to go from one to two. And you know there
- 42:06Speaker 2: are times where he does that and then there's times
- 42:08Speaker 2: where he doesn't do it, and they just need to
- 42:11Speaker 2: have him be a little bit more consistent with that,
- 42:13Speaker 2: because there are open receivers on the film and a
- 42:16Speaker 2: lot of these sacks, and I'm not talking about the
- 42:18Speaker 2: ones that are on the other side of the field.
- 42:20Speaker 2: We're not playing Madden where you can just say, hey,
- 42:23Speaker 2: you know X is open and spam the button. No,
- 42:25Speaker 2: we're talking about actual quarterback play, going through a progression
- 42:29Speaker 2: as an NFL quarterback. So I just would like to
- 42:33Speaker 2: see him do that a little bit more consistently again,
- 42:35Speaker 2: throwing the ball grate. There's three or four big time
- 42:38Speaker 2: throws a game. He's still making big time plays. But
- 42:43Speaker 2: that's just where I'm at with Drake May right now.
- 42:45Speaker 2: And I think this is gonna be an interesting game,
- 42:48Speaker 2: you know, moving forward with Tampa Bay, because they're gonna
- 42:51Speaker 2: come after him like that's what Todd Bowles does. He's
- 42:54Speaker 2: gonna blitz the crap out of him. They're gonna pressure him,
- 42:57Speaker 2: and they're gonna make him make those types of decisions
- 42:59Speaker 2: all day. Am I leaving? Am I staying? Is there pressure?
- 43:03Speaker 2: Is there not pressure?
- 43:04Speaker 4: You know?
- 43:04Speaker 2: Do I need to just go down and take a sack?
- 43:06Speaker 2: Do I need to throw this ball away? Like he's
- 43:08Speaker 2: going to have to make those decisions for four quarters
- 43:10Speaker 2: against Tampa Bay on Sunday. So I'm interested to see
- 43:13Speaker 2: how that goes. The other thing, I'm just on the
- 43:16Speaker 2: sort of the good side. Stick to that for a second.
- 43:19Speaker 2: I was we talked about it. It was last week
- 43:21Speaker 2: where we did the whole man coverage thing, right, and
- 43:23Speaker 2: like how they were playing man coverage. I don't know
- 43:25Speaker 2: if that was last week or or two weeks ago.
- 43:27Speaker 2: I was really excited about how they played band coverage
- 43:30Speaker 2: in this game. I thought that they played the style
- 43:34Speaker 2: of coverage I liked a lot more. And I'm talking
- 43:36Speaker 2: mostly between the twenties. We'll get to the red zone stuff,
- 43:39Speaker 2: but the between the twenties stuff. Specifically, they shadowed receivers
- 43:45Speaker 2: strictly shadowed receivers gonzales On, Drake London, Carlton Davis had
- 43:49Speaker 2: Darnell Mooney, and Marcus Jones had Bijon when Bijon flexed out,
- 43:53Speaker 2: which I thought was a really well done game planned wrinkle.
- 43:57Speaker 2: So every time Bijon was flexed outside the formation out
- 44:01Speaker 2: of the backfield, he got Marcus Jones, which I thought
- 44:05Speaker 2: was really good. Yep, that's if you're going to play
- 44:07Speaker 2: a lot of man coverage, that's how you have to
- 44:08Speaker 2: do it. You cannot allow your opponent to put their
- 44:13Speaker 2: third receiver on Christian Gonzales because Christian Gonzales is just
- 44:16Speaker 2: glued to the boundary of the entire game. You have
- 44:19Speaker 2: to shadow and travel with the receivers. The other thing
- 44:22Speaker 2: that I thought they did more of in this game
- 44:25Speaker 2: was putting robber or low whole help. They really played
- 44:28Speaker 2: a lot of of cover one whole, not true robber,
- 44:31Speaker 2: but they had Christian Ellis it was or explained sometimes
- 44:35Speaker 2: just in that first window, you know that first level
- 44:38Speaker 2: window right at like the five or six yard or
- 44:41Speaker 2: so down the field, So that just allows these corners,
- 44:46Speaker 2: like if they run a shallow if they run a
- 44:47Speaker 2: slant like anything like that, that's all going to be helped.
- 44:52Speaker 2: That's going to be leveraged by that defender. So now
- 44:54Speaker 2: you have the low hole help from the first level,
- 44:58Speaker 2: and then you have the post safety help over the
- 45:00Speaker 2: so now you have support in the middle of the
- 45:02Speaker 2: field for the man coverage defenders. So it's all a
- 45:05Speaker 2: long winded way of saying in this game, Michael Pennix
- 45:09Speaker 2: between the twenties and we'll get to the red zone stuff.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Between the twenties, he was one for seven against man
- 45:14Speaker 2: coverage in this game. He had one completion. It was
- 45:18Speaker 2: after the Gonzales injury. It was a downfield throw to
- 45:21Speaker 2: Drake London where he broke the pocket and extended to play.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Other than that, the Patriots completely shut down Atlanta and
- 45:27Speaker 2: man coverage. That's what this defense needs to do more.
- 45:31Speaker 2: That's where they need to live. That's where that needs
- 45:33Speaker 2: to be their backbone of their coverage. So I was
- 45:35Speaker 2: really excited by the Marcus Jones Bijon wrinkle. I thought
- 45:40Speaker 2: was really good. It was great to see Christian Gonzales
- 45:44Speaker 2: just go toe to toe with Drake London for three quarters.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Unfortunately it wasn't the full four, but we saw it
- 45:49Speaker 2: for three and I thought until that forty yard bomb,
- 45:52Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez was winning the matchup with Drake London. So
- 45:56Speaker 2: I really like to see that. But this is more
- 45:59Speaker 2: like it like if they play man coverage like this,
- 46:02Speaker 2: their past defense is going to get better. And I
- 46:05Speaker 2: was exciting to see that.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it you know, continuing to grow in that regard.
- 46:10Speaker 1: We can get to the red zone stuff, but that's
- 46:12Speaker 1: in the crap.
- 46:13Speaker 2: That gets you beat. Okay, yeah, the red zone stuff's coming,
- 46:17Speaker 2: so uh The other good thing I had from this
- 46:20Speaker 2: game was just pop Douglas. You know, I think that
- 46:23Speaker 2: he's sort of found his way here and his niche
- 46:27Speaker 2: in this offense, and it's not exactly what we thought
- 46:30Speaker 2: it was.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Well, what was I screaming all summer running vertically?
- 46:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so okay, you can take a victory lap there, right. Uh,
- 46:39Speaker 2: he's not running the Welker Edelman slot role.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Chris Hogan. Uh the branch well, I said, a cross
- 46:46Speaker 1: between Hogan and Amandola in the summer branch, all right, like.
- 46:51Speaker 2: The on branch Colm. So right now he is uh
- 46:54Speaker 2: has a career high in a dot average, you know,
- 46:57Speaker 2: depth of target down the field ten point two. He's
- 47:00Speaker 2: basically a speed slot at this point. Like he's not
- 47:04Speaker 2: He's not the shifty jitterbug slot like we've seen in
- 47:07Speaker 2: the past. The McDaniels offense. They have him as a
- 47:09Speaker 2: speed slot running more vertical routes down the field and
- 47:12Speaker 2: it's working. Now we can figure out the open field stuff.
- 47:16Speaker 2: He could maybe stay on his feet.
- 47:18Speaker 1: So you know, it was like to remember Cordero Patterson
- 47:21Speaker 1: was like the opposite of that. Cordero Patterson would like
- 47:24Speaker 1: stumble through his routes and the second he got the
- 47:26Speaker 1: ball in his hands, he was you know, Dante hall
- 47:29Speaker 1: On a Punterdard. Yeah, but it was really weird whether
- 47:32Speaker 1: he so pops the opposite, like he runs the great
- 47:34Speaker 1: routes and then the second the balls in his hands,
- 47:36Speaker 1: he kind of loses it. But he's still making guys
- 47:38Speaker 1: miss even when he's stumbling.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Yeah, So this is a bit a really good role
- 47:42Speaker 2: for him. He's kind of I feel, like I said,
- 47:44Speaker 2: he's kind of found his niche and you know, he
- 47:47Speaker 2: was great in this game. You know, the fifty eight
- 47:49Speaker 2: yarder is a big time exposed to play. The wheel
- 47:52Speaker 2: route touchdown was really really well designed by Josh McDaniels.
- 47:55Speaker 2: But it was also he won his matchup. He got
- 47:58Speaker 2: the matchup and he won it. This is his role.
- 48:00Speaker 2: This is the way that he should be used. It
- 48:02Speaker 2: reminds me a lot more of how he was used
- 48:04Speaker 2: at Liberty in college, Like he was more of a
- 48:07Speaker 2: downfield speed slot at Liberty. So this is the other
- 48:11Speaker 2: thing I would say too, just from a McDaniel's standpoint,
- 48:15Speaker 2: this is how McDaniel's was using Trey Tucker in Vegas. Yea,
- 48:18Speaker 2: So it's not totally a departure from Josh in terms
- 48:22Speaker 2: of some of the other guys that he's had. It's
- 48:25Speaker 2: just not the it's not the old school Patriots slot
- 48:28Speaker 2: that we kind of all anticipated, but this is, you know,
- 48:31Speaker 2: a new version of it, and it's working out for him.
- 48:34Speaker 2: So kudos to Pop. I know, you know, he lost
- 48:36Speaker 2: his uncle and played the game anyways, and that that
- 48:39Speaker 2: was a cool story to you know, obviously bad story,
- 48:44Speaker 2: but like good for him, yeah, you know, and and
- 48:46Speaker 2: all that. But I think that, you know, this is
- 48:49Speaker 2: a nice little niche that he's found with these vertical
- 48:52Speaker 2: routes and these deep targets, deep crossers, post corners, things
- 48:58Speaker 2: like that. It's been cool to watch. Yeah, all right,
- 49:00Speaker 2: let's move on to the bads here. We already did
- 49:04Speaker 2: the Drake maysack thing. I'm not gonna you know, keep
- 49:07Speaker 2: going with that. I think, you know, start you know,
- 49:10Speaker 2: sticking with the offense. Uh. There there are some cracks
- 49:13Speaker 2: in the foundation here on the offensive line that are
- 49:16Speaker 2: starting to show a little bit.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:17Speaker 2: None of them involve your rookie left tackle though, so
- 49:20Speaker 2: you can you can have that right that that's a positive.
- 49:23Speaker 2: I thought he was good again in this game. Honestly,
- 49:24Speaker 2: for like three quarters, I thought he was kind of
- 49:27Speaker 2: dominant in this game. Will Campbell, I thought it was
- 49:29Speaker 2: really good.
- 49:30Speaker 1: The block he had on it was the treel Jenny
- 49:32Speaker 1: session on right.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he was really good in this game. Not
- 49:37Speaker 2: not great competition, you know, James Pearce in those.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Those first round picks.
- 49:42Speaker 2: I know, but like those guys are not established players.
- 49:45Speaker 1: But you want the top end first round pick to
- 49:47Speaker 1: look much better in the bottom end first round.
- 49:49Speaker 2: But yeah, he was good. He was really good.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Uh.
- 49:52Speaker 2: But the the issues that we were having, and uh,
- 49:55Speaker 2: you know the Patriots are having, I should say that
- 49:58Speaker 2: we are going to talk about all off season. The
- 50:01Speaker 2: Patriots are trending towards squarely being in the guard market
- 50:05Speaker 2: this offseason. I think On when Wu, I know his
- 50:08Speaker 2: PFF grades have been good, I don't care, like I
- 50:11Speaker 2: will watch the tape myself, and I'm telling you Free,
- 50:14Speaker 2: I have not been a huge fan of On when
- 50:15Speaker 2: he's game all year long. Jared Wilson, we can say
- 50:19Speaker 2: it's that he's not a guard. I think that's probably
- 50:21Speaker 2: a fair sort of just way to look at it.
- 50:25Speaker 1: They said in the spring they view him as a
- 50:27Speaker 1: center long term.
- 50:28Speaker 2: He's just with Wilson, I think that there are flashes
- 50:32Speaker 2: in pass pro that are really, really good. He's just
- 50:35Speaker 2: not strong enough to play guard, and so he gets
- 50:38Speaker 2: into these power, you know, engagements, and he's base blocking
- 50:42Speaker 2: where he's one on one in the run game and
- 50:44Speaker 2: he just can't move anybody. You know, he's just not
- 50:46Speaker 2: strong enough to play that position on when expensive contract,
- 50:52Speaker 2: not really playing up to that standard right now, I
- 50:55Speaker 2: wonder about his long term standing here again long stories
- 51:00Speaker 2: or they need They're gonna need a guard in twenty
- 51:03Speaker 2: twenty six. They're gonna need to either draft one, sign one.
- 51:06Speaker 1: Whatever we bring him back soda, we might be guards.
- 51:09Speaker 2: I don't know. I would rather not draft one again.
- 51:13Speaker 1: This is mean first round. Oh it did mean first
- 51:15Speaker 1: round that one time, we'll alter it.
- 51:17Speaker 2: I just they're gonna need at least one guard, because
- 51:21Speaker 2: if you want to give on when he was some
- 51:22Speaker 2: leash and let him continue in this regime, in this system,
- 51:27Speaker 2: in this whatever this program, then fine, But Jared Wilson
- 51:33Speaker 2: is not a long term answer. I don't think I
- 51:34Speaker 2: left guard, and I don't know if on when it
- 51:37Speaker 2: was here for long.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Get ready to learn Jennings Dunker buddy that does.
- 51:42Speaker 2: The kid from North Dakota State, Iowa.
- 51:45Speaker 1: But he's the case got red hair mull and he
- 51:47Speaker 1: plays tackle now, but he might be guard at the
- 51:49Speaker 1: next level. Either way. He's one of the meanest linemen
- 51:51Speaker 1: I've seen in a long time.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so he uh a little bit of cracks
- 51:57Speaker 2: in the aligne foundation. The other last thing here where
- 52:00Speaker 2: some of the zone stuff is starting to bother me,
- 52:03Speaker 2: and I guess this is just the time that I'm
- 52:04Speaker 2: just gonna do this. I'm just gonna die on this hill.
- 52:07Speaker 2: About the pass rush. I understand that the Patriots have
- 52:10Speaker 2: concerns in terms of depth at edgeresher, but when we
- 52:14Speaker 2: look at the frontline guys that are playing, the problem
- 52:18Speaker 2: to me with the Patriots pass defense right now is
- 52:20Speaker 2: not the pass rush. The problem is is that whenever
- 52:24Speaker 2: the pass rush starts to win, and I pulled clips
- 52:26Speaker 2: this morning, I have like ten of them that I
- 52:28Speaker 2: could show you of guys winning up front on the
- 52:31Speaker 2: line of scrimmage. But the ball is coming out so
- 52:33Speaker 2: quickly because there's open receivers, mostly against like off coverage
- 52:38Speaker 2: zone where there's just too much space underneath the zone
- 52:41Speaker 2: or too much space on the outside where they're giving
- 52:43Speaker 2: them cushion and there's just nothing the pass rush can do.
- 52:46Speaker 2: Like Melton Williams just wins right up the middle on
- 52:49Speaker 2: a swim move and the ball is out, like you know,
- 52:52Speaker 2: they win. They're trying to run a game or run
- 52:54Speaker 2: a stunt or something like that and it's coming open.
- 52:57Speaker 2: You know it's coming free. The wrap has come free,
- 53:00Speaker 2: but the ball's out and right now they they are
- 53:04Speaker 2: not playing tight enough coverage like sacks. They're eighteenth in
- 53:07Speaker 2: the league in sacks. Everybody wants them to get more sacks.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Sacks is a team stat. Sacks is not a pass
- 53:13Speaker 2: For US stat exclusively, sacks is you need to get
- 53:17Speaker 2: the quarterback to hold the football. If you are giving
- 53:20Speaker 2: first read open throws to quarterbacks in the NFL, you're
- 53:25Speaker 2: not going to be a good sack defense. You're not
- 53:27Speaker 2: going to accumulate sacks. So when I look at it
- 53:31Speaker 2: on film, I think the bigger concern with their pass
- 53:35Speaker 2: rush is that they need to start having tighter coverage,
- 53:39Speaker 2: which is why I'm so excited about the man coverage
- 53:41Speaker 2: things that I saw from this game, because they need
- 53:44Speaker 2: to improve their coverage so that they can get the
- 53:46Speaker 2: quarterback to hold football, so some of this pressure that
- 53:49Speaker 2: they are accumulating can start turning into impactful pressure.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Yep.
- 53:54Speaker 2: So they got forty five percent pressure rate on Michael
- 53:57Speaker 2: Pennix in this game, and a lot of people that
- 54:00Speaker 2: watch the game came out of the game feeling like
- 54:01Speaker 2: there was no pass rush. But the problem was that
- 54:04Speaker 2: every single time somebody won up front Penix, the ball
- 54:08Speaker 2: was out of Penix's hands before they could get home.
- 54:10Speaker 2: So if you can tie, you got to marry it
- 54:13Speaker 2: all together. It's it's eleven people, it's not just about
- 54:16Speaker 2: one thing.
- 54:17Speaker 1: And it also helped that like there were times that
- 54:19Speaker 1: Drake London wasn't open and Pennix still threw them the ball.
- 54:22Speaker 1: The obviously the London gets some credit in that too.
- 54:26Speaker 2: The forty yard bomb is definitely one of those instances.
- 54:29Speaker 2: But there's you know London that caught a couple in
- 54:33Speaker 2: this game where Millon Williams won up front and London,
- 54:38Speaker 2: you know, Gonzo's just bailing like on cover three or
- 54:41Speaker 2: quarters and there's like eight yards of cushion and London
- 54:44Speaker 2: just turns around and catches the ball. And that's not
- 54:48Speaker 2: a pass rush problem, Like, that's not the pass rush's
- 54:51Speaker 2: fault that the ball came out in two seconds. There's
- 54:54Speaker 2: nothing you can do about that. So I'm gonna die
- 54:56Speaker 2: on this hill. I just watch the tape, like these
- 54:59Speaker 2: guys up front will win. You know when they got
- 55:02Speaker 2: the chase on sack in the opening drive, If you
- 55:05Speaker 2: watch that play, it's because they covered the initial read.
- 55:09Speaker 2: They ran a little bit of a disguise zone. They
- 55:12Speaker 2: covered Pennix's eyes. Mike Rabel broke it down on Patriots
- 55:16Speaker 2: dot Com was Zoe like, they cover the initial read,
- 55:19Speaker 2: it gets Pennix to hold the ball and the pocket
- 55:22Speaker 2: collapses and they sacked them. So he said it in
- 55:25Speaker 2: the past, and I'll echo what he said with Rabel.
- 55:29Speaker 2: The sack stuff, it's on the coverage to get the
- 55:34Speaker 2: quarterback to hold the football you want, you need to
- 55:36Speaker 2: get the quarterback off his first rate. That's on the coverage,
- 55:39Speaker 2: both the call and the players executing the coverage. Once
- 55:43Speaker 2: the quarterback holds the ball and gets off the first read,
- 55:46Speaker 2: now it becomes about the pass rush getting home. And
- 55:49Speaker 2: I think too often with this Patriots defense, you're seeing
- 55:52Speaker 2: quarterbacks NFL quarterbacks hitting the top of the drop. First
- 55:56Speaker 2: read is open, ball is out, and that's just not
- 55:59Speaker 2: going to be impactful. Like, that's not gonna be good
- 56:02Speaker 2: pass defense, so I'm gonna die on the hill. It's
- 56:05Speaker 2: not the pass rush, it's the coverage. They need to
- 56:07Speaker 2: be better in coverage. Hopefully we saw you know, some good,
- 56:11Speaker 2: you know, man coverage stuff in this game against the Falcons.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Hopefully that carries over and they can have better coverage
- 56:17Speaker 2: really quickly before we take a quick break. Does the
- 56:20Speaker 2: stuff that gets you beat the drake may strip sack
- 56:24Speaker 2: you just can't have it. That is crap that gets
- 56:26Speaker 2: you beat. The game was over, they're driving, they have
- 56:29Speaker 2: the ball to fifty yard line, they're going in for
- 56:32Speaker 2: more points, up fourteen points, and then they're gonna receive
- 56:35Speaker 2: the second half kickoff, so they have the chance to
- 56:38Speaker 2: bury the Falcons with double score. There even if you
- 56:40Speaker 2: only get ten points out of the double score, we're
- 56:42Speaker 2: not talking about a twenty point lead, you know, twenty
- 56:45Speaker 2: four point lead with like you know, a quarter and
- 56:48Speaker 2: a half to play, you can't have you can't have
- 56:52Speaker 2: that sack phone, Well, you just can't. So that was
- 56:54Speaker 2: a stuff that gets you beat this week. The other
- 56:56Speaker 2: one that I wanted to dissect a little bit was
- 56:58Speaker 2: the red zone and this one, I think you have
- 57:02Speaker 2: fair gripes in terms of the coaching and the game
- 57:05Speaker 2: plan and all that kind of stuff. I give the
- 57:08Speaker 2: Falcons a lot of credit. They attack the rules of
- 57:11Speaker 2: the Patriots in the red zone to get Marcus Jones
- 57:15Speaker 2: on Drake London a couple of times. But if you're
- 57:17Speaker 2: the Patriots, you just you you have to make sure
- 57:19Speaker 2: that doesn't happen.
- 57:20Speaker 1: To Like the first time, it's a good wrinkle by Atlanta.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Those guys get paid to but they got to be
- 57:24Speaker 1: more aware of it the second time coming back.
- 57:26Speaker 2: So the first time they you know, the Patriots were
- 57:29Speaker 2: gonna switch it. They were in a banjo or switch
- 57:32Speaker 2: in you know, two by two, right, and they motion
- 57:35Speaker 2: London into the formation. So basically what they're trying to
- 57:38Speaker 2: do is Marcus Jones is gonna take whoever runs into
- 57:41Speaker 2: the middle of the field, and Christian Gonzalez is gonna
- 57:44Speaker 2: take whoever runs out, and they actually have Drake London.
- 57:48Speaker 2: This is a classic a switch banjo whatever you want
- 57:51Speaker 2: to call it, beater, They have Drake London. His first
- 57:54Speaker 2: like two steps are inside like he's gonna run a slant,
- 57:57Speaker 2: and then he runs out on the fade, So it's
- 58:00Speaker 2: kind of like a double move. So when he runs
- 58:03Speaker 2: that little inside, you know, stem to the inside, that's
- 58:09Speaker 2: automatically going to have Marcus Jones declare as the primary defender,
- 58:13Speaker 2: like he's got to take the inside there, right, and
- 58:15Speaker 2: so that when London goes back out to the fade,
- 58:17Speaker 2: he's stuck on Drake London on the fade. The second
- 58:20Speaker 2: one was a bunch. It was a three receiver bunch,
- 58:23Speaker 2: and they knew that if they put Drake London in
- 58:26Speaker 2: the point, that Marcus Jones takes the point. And so
- 58:30Speaker 2: they put Drake London on the line of scrimmage. The
- 58:32Speaker 2: Patriots are probably anticipating him being off the line of scrimmage.
- 58:36Speaker 2: He was on the line of scrimmage and he gets
- 58:38Speaker 2: matched up against Marcus Jones again. So they got beat
- 58:41Speaker 2: in the chess match there on the goal line three
- 58:44Speaker 2: times for touchdowns. They're red zone defense now, Alex, another
- 58:48Speaker 2: status going around. They are dead last in the league
- 58:51Speaker 2: in the red zone on defense. They're giving up a
- 58:52Speaker 2: touchdown seventy five percent of the time in the red zone.
- 58:55Speaker 1: It's too much.
- 58:56Speaker 2: The other little thing here too with the red zone. Then,
- 58:58Speaker 2: and then we got to take a break. They're busting
- 59:01Speaker 2: coverages like crazy in the red zone and I don't
- 59:03Speaker 2: really know what the reason for it is, but it's
- 59:08Speaker 2: happened two weeks in a row and it's starting to
- 59:10Speaker 2: kind of become a theme. Last week they busted the
- 59:14Speaker 2: fanom touchdown, just wide open touchdown. This week they busted
- 59:18Speaker 2: a flat. They didn't have anybody in the flat in
- 59:20Speaker 2: the zone. Yeah, the twelve yard of debijon, which then
- 59:24Speaker 2: sets you up on the one yard line, first and
- 59:26Speaker 2: goal from the one. Once you get inside the five
- 59:28Speaker 2: yard line in the NFL, you score eighty six percent
- 59:30Speaker 2: of the time, so like it's kind of over at
- 59:33Speaker 2: that point once you have first and goal from the one.
- 59:35Speaker 2: So in order to improve as a red zone defense,
- 59:38Speaker 2: you need to be better. You know, they break the
- 59:40Speaker 2: red zone into three pieces. You have the high red zone,
- 59:42Speaker 2: the low red zone, and then goal line. You need
- 59:44Speaker 2: to keep them from goal line, like you have to
- 59:46Speaker 2: keep them in the higher the low red zone, and
- 59:49Speaker 2: then get them to kick field goals from those areas
- 59:52Speaker 2: of the field. So right now, the Patriots, in my mind,
- 59:55Speaker 2: a big part of their red zone struggles or that
- 59:57Speaker 2: they're letting teams get the ball all the way down
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: to like the one yard line too much, right, and
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: then you're just not gonna stop them from there. So
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: that's the red zone stuff. I thought those are the
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: two things that got you beat. That's the falcons. We're
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: gonna take your calls to your emails. We're gonna talk
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: a little bit about this Bucks game coming up right

- 1:03:41Speaker 2: read and I've never read it before and I'm reading
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: it for the first time on the air, it's always
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: a little bit of you never that's that's I know,
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: I gotta, I gotta.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: You never should read something for the first time live
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: on the air. I know you're you never should do that.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: You're right, it's a good lesson, like uncomfortable.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: You already said that you were at Curry College last night,
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: given lessons you should given that lesson.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: We didn't get to that. Maybe next week, maybe well
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: that I was a one off they invited me to.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Thanks to Curry College, Jimmy Young and Curry College for
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: having me.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: Though my father is a proud Curry College am.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: There were some we didn't get to catch. Twenty two
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: ors some patriots, unfiltered fans in that good class.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Good. I like that.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: They said they enjoyed when the other guys get you
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: all worked up.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Oh, it's not that hard to do. Yeah, it's not
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: that hard to do. Just come out.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: The kids love it.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: It's like two things. Like one is, you know, when
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: you make it about the stats, right, Like I'll say
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: a stat and then it becomes a referendum on the
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: stat Like, it's not the point. I'm just trying to
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: use some supporting evidence to back up my point. Like
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: we don't have to, you know, if I bring up
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: like a PFF grade or something, we don't have to
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: then spend ten minutes discussing whether or not PFF is
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: like a valid source of information, right, Like, that's the
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: part that gets me fired up. That's it.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: I just got you worked up on the concept of
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: you getting worked up.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's just you know, I've been thinking about
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: this a little bit and it needed to come out,
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: all right, Patty is an on what's up? Patty?
- 1:05:02Speaker 7: Hey, what's going on?
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: Guys?
- 1:05:06Speaker 7: So Alex you know me, it's never too early to
- 1:05:09Speaker 7: talk about draft, and especially since they didn't make a move,
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: I'm not upset that they didn't make a move. I
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: was a little bit surprised because I thought that they
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: would actually look for some excuse me, at least some
- 1:05:20Speaker 7: help along the edge, you know, even if it was
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: a depth guy. But I want to throw out a
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: couple of names at you and see if see if
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: you have any opinions on him yet. The first guys,
- 1:05:32Speaker 7: David Bailey out of Texas Tech, who they might they
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: might be out of position to draft. But the other
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: guy I really like coming out as Quincy Rose Junior.
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: He's an edge guy from Arkansas. You think he's kind
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: of a fit. I think Bailey is a fit in
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: any scheme.
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: I'll take that up the air. But the other thing
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: I wanted to ask you, guys, is if if Kyle
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: Williams doesn't get going this week, is it going to
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: happen this year? Like is the because I mean, Booty's
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: probably it's not gonna be playing this week, maybe not
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: even next week against the Jets. Realistically, I mean, do
- 1:06:07Speaker 7: you think he just needs like one good catch to
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: get himself going? And I'll take those off here, guys.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Thanks, Yeah, Patty, thanks for the call. It's a good question.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: About Kyle Williams. I don't know if you have a
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: take on those.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: David Bailey is and he's right, like Bailey's having an
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: unbelievable season at Texas Tech and the Patriots having a
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: great season, so they may end up like passing each other.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: But what what's the Mike Rabel edge rusher? Like six
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: two two fifty all about the first step get off right? Like,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: that's David Bailey is to a t when people talk
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: about what Mike Rabel's looking for on the end, and
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: there's other there's other good edge rushers in the class too,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: but in terms of like the schemes specific fit, he
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: was the consensus pick for the Patriots on the on
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: the mock draft database for a few weeks there. We'll see,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: we'll see. Here's the thing, there's all this is a
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: really good edge class. This is a really really good
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: edge class. And frankly, defensive line too is part of that.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: It's a good pass rusher class. So you're not gonna
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: have that. There might be ten edge guys and I'm
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: kind of rounding here, but there might be ten edge
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: guys that are top twenty five players in the class.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: You're gonna have ten edge guys go in the top
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: twenty five because the needs just starting dictated that way.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Somebody's gonna have to fall, somebody's gonna go below where
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: they should because there's just so much talent. The position.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: This has happened with, you know, other what was the
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: position last year, This happened with that we talked about.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: That got pushed down.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Yeah, the talent or we've talked about this before, different
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: positions wide receiver a couple years ago it happened. Yeah,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: somebody's gonna get pushed down, whether it's Bailey, whether it's
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: somebody else. Like, well, we'll get to that, but David
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Bailey is absolutely a name Patriots fan should know.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Okay, all right with Kyle Williams, so you know, just
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: we can break down his target a little bit too,
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: and then just talk about a big picture as well.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: So on the target, you know, my interpretation of it
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: was that he ran a five step route when he
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: was supposed to run a three step route. And that's
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: just based off of the way that it looked earlier
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: in the game, and then also just it was mirrored
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: like it was the same route Digs was running on
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: the inside, and Diggs ran it one two and open,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: and Kyle Williams ran it one, two, three, four and open,
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: so he ran it on the fifth step instead of
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: the three step. So that when that happens, that's why
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: the ball gets thrown behind you is because you're running
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: the wrong route. So with him, what I'm seeing is
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: details and this is good. And I also would just say, like,
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: this is not like a Josh McDaniel's option route thing, right,
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: this is not like it's too complex for young receivers, like,
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: so don't make it about that. It's this is a
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: a young receiver that needs to be a little bit
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: sharper on his details. You know, Pop Douglass had the
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: same problem for a couple of years there as well.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: So it takes time. And when you're throwing, you know,
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: with timing, you're throwing quick game, you're throwing things like
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: that like it, it can really make it look bad
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: when you're not syncd up with the quarterback and the
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: drop of the quarterbacks. So that's what I'm seeing with
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Kyle Williams. Now there, I think there is opportunities for
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: him to produce on verticals. Like I still think that
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: if you got him isolated on the backside and he
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: ran a go route like he would still be able
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: to win on the go route, and those routes are
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: obviously a lot simpler than trying to you know, time
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: up a route in the quick game or something like that.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: So I'm not seeing like no separation on tape from
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: Kyle Williams or anything like that. His issues seem to
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: be more mental than they are physical at the moment,
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: so it might just take some time. I don't know
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: what they're going to get out of him this year,
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: but he's going to get some opportunities here with Kaisehan Boody,
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: you know, dealing with that hamstring. So we'll see. But
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: I'm still I see enough separation with Kyle Williams. Like
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: I think the problem when you look at a lot
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: of other receivers with the Patriots in the past that
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: have busted, you know, second third round, guys like Jalen
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: Pole couldn't get open right so like that, that right
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: then and there just kind of makes it an uphill battle.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: When you can't separate in this league, it makes it
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: an uphill battle. I think with Taekwon, you know, he
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: couldn't stay healthy. That was obviously a big part of it.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: But with Taekwon, I don't know if he ever truly
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: played with a quarterback that could unlock the vertical speed
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: because he's really like a downfield vertical threat. Yeah, Like
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: he's not a guy that separates in the first ten
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: to fifteen yards. He's a guy that's separating thirty five
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: forty yards down the field. So when you play with
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: quarterbacks that don't really thrive in that sort of thing,
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: you know, Bailey Zappi, mac Jones, like he's not really
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: going to thrive with that quarterback. He goes to Kansas
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: City and Patrick Mahomes can put the ball on him
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: down there and he's having more success. Maybe Taekwan would
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: have had a little bit more success with Drake May
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: probably not. He probably needed to change of scenery. But
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: to me, that was what it was with Taekwon. So
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: at least with Kyle Williams, I'm seeing him separate at times.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: He's just got to get on the same page with
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: the offense and with the quarterbacks. So I don't know
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: which way you would rather like. I would rather that
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: than watching the tape and saying this guy can't get
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: off coverage like Joeen Polk but as of right now,
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: it doesn't really matter which way he's not producing. So
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: whichever way it is, which you know, whatever way you
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: kind of shake it out to be, he's not producing.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Do you have any takes on Kyle Will I.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Mean, I think it will help. And Vrabel talked about
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: this the other day. He's gonna just focus. I would
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: think he's just going to focus on the X receiver
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: position now, which is going to help because he's been
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: all over the place.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: He also he didn't work a lot with Drake in
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: the summer. Yeah, and I can't imagine he's worked with
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: him a lot behind the scenes here season start because
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: they're geting ready for games. He isn't had a big role.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: He's only played twenty percent of their offensive snaps this year,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: and that number is elevated by a significant role after
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: Boody got hurt this week. So I think it will
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: help him being able to focus on one position. I
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: think it will help him. Getting to work with Drake
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: made this week because their chemistry is just not there
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: right now, and maybe it clicks, maybe it doesn't. We
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: will see. I'm not super worried about his lack of
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: production because it's just been a lack of opportunity. And
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: it's not a case where they're not playing him. You know,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: sometimes we talk about it, well, this guy can't get
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: on the field, and that's not a good set, but
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: like there's a legitimate reason for him to knock it
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: on the field. The guys ahead of him are playing well. Yeah,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: so now we'll see what he can do that he
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: has a bigger opportunity.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think a lot of it, Like I said,
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: you know, especially those first and second level routes, Like
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: I think he runs a great vertical routes and he's
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: he's gonna eventually. I really believe he will eventually pop one.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: Like I think he's going to get behind the defender
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: at some point and Drake may we'll find him on
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: a go route or something like that. But these first
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: and second level routes take a lot more detail of
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: you know. The other thing too. I think this was
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: last week against Cleveland when they when they targeted him
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: on that like seven stop, you know, the route around
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: along the sideline. I think it was the Cleveland game,
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: and and they're all blending together, but like he just
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: takes too long to get into the route and in college.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: That's okay because the quarterbacks have all day back there
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: to kind of let, you know, pat the ball and
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: wait for the receiver to get open. But like he does,
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: like he runs off the line and he gives like
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: a little like a little fake. Then he gets to
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: the top of the route, he gives another little fake
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: and then he Denny cuts back right and by the
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: time it all this happens, it's just it's too late, right,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: It's just too late for the quarterback. So these are
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: all the little details that when you run first and
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: second level routes in the league, like, you have to
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: be sharp on in order to get these targets. So
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: I do think that that can be developed, and I
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: do think that they have the right coaching now that
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: hopefully they can develop in those areas. And we'll see
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: all right, back to the phones. Sean is in Vancouver.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: What's up, Sean.
- 1:13:46Speaker 9: I'm very happy that the Patriots kept the twenty first
- 1:13:49Speaker 9: century streak alive of not losing to the Falcons. The
- 1:13:52Speaker 9: game was closer than it should have been. So this
- 1:13:57Speaker 9: this week it's gonna be their toughest matchup against the
- 1:14:01Speaker 9: Bucks since the Bills. It's tough when you can't turn
- 1:14:05Speaker 9: the ball over, you know, and make big mistakes or
- 1:14:08Speaker 9: are they going to lose? But I'm excited. I'm going
- 1:14:11Speaker 9: to be there, Evan. Are you going to be at
- 1:14:14Speaker 9: the rally at Sunset Rodeo at five on Saturday?
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: Oh?
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what time we're getting
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: in as of right now, but there's a rally.
- 1:14:23Speaker 9: Where is it at Sunset Rodeo? It's three to zero
- 1:14:28Speaker 9: two Howard Street, like close to downtown.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Okay, cool, Yeah, if we're there in time, the boss
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Man might be there for sure. But if we're there
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: on time, I would not mind stopping by. I've heard
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: that it's going to be quite the Patriots party in
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: Tampa this weekend. A lot of Patriots fans, a lot
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: of Patriots fans buying tickets for this game and making
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: this like their road trip of the season type of thing.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: So I'm glad that you're going, Sean. That'd be cool.
- 1:14:54Speaker 9: Yeah, it'll be fun, all right, I'll take it off, all.
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Right, sounds good. Maybe i'll see you there. Yeah, it's
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: been for week now. I've been hearing a lot about
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: how many Patriots fans are going to be in Tampa.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: For this game. So I'm actually interested to see how
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: well they travel because it's a good Bucks team, Like
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: they're not going to play the test, the one in
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: seven Titans, right where the Patriots fans take over the
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: stadium against a bad team. This is an illegitimate playoff contender.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: Let's talk a little bit about the Bucks. That's a
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: good segue. So just really quickly from Rick Stroud, who's,
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: you know, one of their their beat writers for the
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Tampa Bay Times, it sounds like Chris Godwin and Bucky
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: Irving are still a little ways away and aren't going
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: to play in this game. He's saying, not expected to
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: practice today. Are both are still in the rehab phase.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: So if you're in the rehab phase on a Wednesday
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: before the game, I don't know, you're not probably gonna play.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: So that's sort of been the story for the Bucks. Offensively.
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: They've lost Evans, they've lost Godwin, they've lost Irving, they
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: lost Godecki, their right tackles on injured reserve. He was
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: designated to return, but we know how that works. There's
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: a three week ramp up period and I don't know
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: if that's necessarily going to you know, he's gonna play
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: this week. It might be a little bit too soon still,
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: so they did just have their bye week. They're coming
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: off the buy, so hopefully, you know, for their sake
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: at least, maybe they're gonna get a little bit healthier
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: coming out of this by But basically, you know, the
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: first six weeks of the season for Baker, you know,
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: starting with their offense, Baker is an MVP candidate. For
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: the first six weeks of the season, he's playing great,
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: like twelve to one touchdown interception ratio. He has like
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: all these insane scrambles on film where he's just running
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: guys over and things like that. So he was playing
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: a really high level for the first six weeks of
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: the season. Then their injuries really started to pile up,
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: especially at receiver with those veteran guys. So they're basically
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: throwing to Agbuka, who's a great young rookie, really impressive guy.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: Yeah to watch this week. My guy Tess Johnson is
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: like kind of their pop Douglas, Like they're like gadget player.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: Sterling Shepherd is their third receiver. I probably found out
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: this week that Sterling Shepherd was still in the league,
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: so he's their third receiver, and then kaid And has
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: been like a decent, you know, kind of hunter Henry
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: Ish tight end, like a train moving titan.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: We want to talk about still in leaue, Ryan Miller
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: still in the league too.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Okay, So that's sort of their skill group right now
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: around Baker Mayfield. That is not Evans guy winning, Buka
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: right and Bucky Irving. It's so when you look at
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: the stats, you know, Baker is only completing like fifty
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: six percent of his passes over the last two weeks.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: He really struggled in that game against Detroit, missed a
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: lot of open throws in that game against the Lions.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: But my guess is in that game, you know he's
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: throwing the guys he hasn't never really thrown to before.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: It's a bunch of fresh faces. He didn't seem too
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: confident throwing the ball. I thought he was hesitant out
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: holding the football a little bit. So their offense is
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: reeling a little bit here over the last couple of weeks.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Defensively there, they're fantastic. They've got a great defense, a great,
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: great secondary, really good group. You know, Antoine Winfield is
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: one of my favorite players in the League, elite ballhawking
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: safety Jamal Dean's playing really well for them. Jacob Parrish
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: in the slot is a player that I really liked
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: in the draft that I thought maybe the Patriots would
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: be interested in.
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: From ya Yai off the edge. They have some really
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: good players and they have a really good scheme with
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Todd Bowles. But let's stick you know with the offense.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: Just your interpretation of Baker's season and you know what
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: kind of worries you about this Bucks offense?
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: Uh, definitely, big play threats all over the field. I
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: thought Baker, you know, he's in the MVP chase. It
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: it kills him that he's losing all these guys. He's
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: losing Evans, he's losing Godwin, and that's obviously going to
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: change things. But he's a baller and he's not gonna
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: He's gonna take a step back less than I think
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: some other guys would when things get tough. He's shown
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: he can elevate the people around him. So he's a
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: real threat. He's somebody you have to be aware of
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: at all times. He can make and he's underrated too.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: He can make plays with his legs. He doesn't do
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: it a lot, and they're not really gonna call design runs,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: but he'll he'll pick up a first down or two
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: over the course of the game on a scramble if
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: you let him. And Michael Pennix, who is a good
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: runner but doesn't run a lot. He got the Patriots
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: in that way a couple a couple of times last
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: week too, So good point. You know, I think you attack,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: maybe you try to find areas where they're banged up
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: and you attack that. I don't necessarily know you attack
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: banged up wide receivers. Maybe that's just more more of
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: the blitz, you knowing guys won't get open as quick
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: banged up offensive line structure pressure in that way. But
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield's a real deal. Like, Baker Mayfield is going
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: to be the best quarterback they've faced since since Josh,
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: So you gotta come ready for him.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he's a really good player. Obviously, been three
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: years there now in Tampa Bay, and he's had three
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: different offensive coordinators because they keep getting head coaching johns
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: because he's so good. So his career revival has gotten
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: Dave Canalis and Liam Cohen head coaching jobs. As his
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: play caller in one like in one year too, like
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: leap Phone was his play caller for one year and
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: landed the Jaguars head coaching job just off of that.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: So that tells you a lot about Baker Mayfield. I
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: think that you mentioned it a little bit there with
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: the receivers. One of the things that's giving them trouble
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: is man coverage because they just haven't had the health
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: that receiver, ye you know, to be able to beat
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: man consistently and separate consistently and time it up and
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. So this game is a
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: little similar statistically, at least to Pennix and the Falcons,
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: in that you know, Baker's thirty first in the league
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: and apa against man coverage. He's only averaging like four
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: and a half yards per attempt right now against man
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: to man. A lot of that, to me is not
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: having Godwin in Evans and not having guys that he
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: trusts that can separate against man to man coverage. So
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: you see those, you know, kind of cracks in the
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: foundation because of that. It's another quarterback. And now I
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: trust Baker more because he's better and he's more experienced,
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: but it's another quarterback that likes to throw the ball
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: vertically and outside the numbers. He's not a big thrower
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: in the middle of the field either, So that could
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: also be why the man coverage hasn't been great, because,
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: like I'll keep saying it, the beat man coverage, you
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: throw slants, you throw crossing routes, you throw digs, you
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: throw stuff into the middle of the field. So if
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: you're not willing to throw those routes and you're only
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: gonna throw outs and corners and verticals and stuff like that,
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: that's into the leverage of the man coverage defender. So
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: you're throwing it right into the defense. So I have
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: a little bit more faith in Baker Mayfield to layer
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: throws into the middle of the field if they're open,
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: because he's more experienced and a better quarterback than Michael Pennix.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: But it's still not an offense that really lives in
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: the middle of the field. It's not necessarily what they do.
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: I think Gonzo shadows of Buka. Assuming Gonzo's healthy, which
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: he indicated he was at the end end of the
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: game last week. Uh, you know, Gonzo shadows like Buka,
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: Tes Johnson and Marcus Jones. Seems like a decent matchup
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: for the Patriots, Carlton Davis will probably be the boundary
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: and take Sterling Shepard and then Kate Aton is kind
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: of the one guy. Now, Kateaen is on an explosive
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: tight end, but he's crafty. He reminds me a lot
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: of Hunter Henry, Like he's crafty. Uh, he's good at
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: the top of the route. He can like kind of
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: bump you off and you know, attack leverage and like
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: that whole sort of thing. Uh So, last week it
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: was a lot of Craig Woodson on Kyle Pitts, and
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: to Woodson's credit, he did a decent job I thought
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: on Kyle Pitts. So maybe those are your matchups, you know,
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: Gonzo against Egbuca, Teded Johnson and Marcus Jones, Sterling Shepherd,
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: Carlton Davis and then uh Woodson on on. So you know,
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: Sean White out of the backfield can do some things,
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: you know, as a pass catch.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: They did a pretty good job on on Bijan last week.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: He didn't like that. They should be able to replicate that.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: And that's not to say that Rashad White as Bijon,
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: but like they I thought they had a good plan
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: for the running back last week.
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: It was a better This is a you know, in
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: my mind, it's kind of like just a little bit
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: of a better version of the Falcons in terms of
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: the way they they run their offense, Yeah.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: I could see that.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Not their run game necessarily, they're more of a downhill
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: run team than Atlanta is all the stretch runs. But
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: in terms of their pass game, it's really similar. Like
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: they'll do a lot of you know, trips and bunches,
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: Like they run a lot of three by one with
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: three receivers to one side of the formation, and they'll they'
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: That is another thing I would just highlight in terms
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: of the chess match, like the Patriots struggled a little
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: bit last week with sorting out bunches by Atlanta, especially
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: down in the red zone. So I think the Falcons
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: are excuse me, the the Bucks will come in and
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: test that this week, so they do a lot of
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. But I'm looking forward to Gonzo
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: against like Buca. I think that's a kind of like
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: when he faced Marvin Harrison last year as a rookie,
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: Like that's gonna be a fun matchup. He's a really
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: good player. Moving over to the defense. You know, the
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Paigets offense against the Bucks defense. Uh, Todd Bowles Man
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: is gonna put Drake May in a blender or he's
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: gonna gonna try. I don't know if he's gonna succeed,
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: but he's gonna try. And Uh he is a just
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: maniacal blitzer Like this guy comes after quarterbacks. Uh. They're
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: only seventh in the league and blitz rate, but it
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: feels higher about because of all the simulated pressure that
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: they run where they're gonna show blitz and then kind
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: of back out of it, which is basically like it's
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: the idea of it is still kind of the same. Uh,
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: they run a lot of blitz. They're fourth in the
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: league right now in team pressure rate. The Patriots have
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: had some issues the last couple of weeks with pressure,
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: you know, both up front and with the quarterback. So
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: this is another one of those defenses that is gonna
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: spin the dial. They're gonna disguise a lot on the
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: back end. There's gonna be a lot of pressure on
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: the quarterback and the Patriots are gonna have to manage that.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: So Uh, it's a fun defense to watch on film.
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: You know. They they really mix it up. You look
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: at their coverages, like, there's not a ton of tendency
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: with their coverages. It's a kind of everything across the board.
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: They're kind of cover all their grounds there, so they
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: mix it up quite a bit. And you know they're
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: gonna come after Drake the number one thing I look
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: at with uh, you know Bowls' blitz package. He loves
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: those mug fronts. So mugfronts, you're just gonna put a
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: linebacker in each a gap and he's gonna stand up
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: and then you can just play this game of cat mouse.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: Is he dropping? Is he rushing? You know, they'll drop one,
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: they'll rush one, they'll drop both, they'll rush both. Like
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: they'll do all these different sort of permutations out of
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: those fronts, and you have to you know, they'll play man,
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: they'll play zone. You kind of have to decipher, you know,
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: what they're going to do. So this is a big
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: you know, where are your hots? You know how much
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: time do I have in the pocket? Uh, you know,
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: how are they in manner? Are they in zone? Like
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: this is a big mental test for this Patriots offense. Yeah,
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: And I think the difference between this and maybe some
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: of the last couple of defenses that they've faced is
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: that those defenses were system defenses where they sat in
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: a lot of the same coverages, but they just played
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: those coverages really, really well, whereas this is a true,
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: you don't know what you're gonna get, spin the dial
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: kind of defense with Tampa Bay. So it's gonna be
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: interesting to see how it goes because it can go
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: one of two ways. Either the quarterback goes into the
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: blender or he sees the blitzes coming in. There's open
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: receivers all over the world.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Well, so I think it's a big get to go
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: back to what we talked about from the Falcons game.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: Got to get the ball out quick. That is a massive,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: massive point of emphasis this week. And we'll see he's
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: done a very good job. Like we'll talk about something
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: one week, go Drake May struggled with this, and then
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: he comes back the next week and excels at it
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: right right, big way.
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: To do that.
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you. I think that that's a good point.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: You know, I'm really looking forward. That's kind of the
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: number one thing that I am looking for in this
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: game is does Drake May take the coaching of some
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: of the different things that he missed in the game
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: that led to sacks. You can he take that coaching
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: and then correct it the next week, because he's been
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: pretty good about that. I would say most of the
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: season and most of his career about correcting mistakes and
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: going back and forth. A couple of other matchups that
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: stand out to me. I don't know which ones stand
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: out to you, but Vidavea against Jared Wilson and Garrett
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: Bradbury is a power in size mismatch. In the inside.
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: I don't even know if you try to run the
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: ball inside on this defense, I don't know if you're
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: gonna have any luck doing that. And then also in
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: the past rush you know if you're going to get
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: one on ones in. Via Va also likes to pick,
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: like he likes to be the pick man on stunts
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: a lot, and he'll just like ear hole guys, like
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: he'll just come through and he'll be the pick man
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: and he'll just freaking give you a nice slab right
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: right in the rims and just pop the guy off,
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: the guy he's trying to block. So it's he's a menace,
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: Like he is an absolute monster. I love watching Vitaveta
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: play he's a fantastic player, but he's a game wrecker,
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: like he's someone that could truly you might not be
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: able to run the ball inside, and Drake may might
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: not have much of a pocket to step into. If
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: Vida Veya's humming.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: It's gonna be a lot of good defensive tackle play
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: in this game. The inside of Tampa's lion's kind of
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: been refigured a few times. They're dealing with injuries and
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: Milton Williams and Christian bar More, they can they do
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: more to convert some of those pressures to they've been
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: playing well, it's not necessarily their fault, but like, do
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: we see them do we see them start to pile
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: up some more sacks in this game?
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's an interesting one. Any other things stand
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: out to you about this Tampa team.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: That's pretty much it for me.
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: Well, I'll be down there. It'll be fun. I'm looking
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: forward to it. I think this is I wish this
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: game was. I'm happy this game is a one for
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: personal reasons because I always like one o'clock games, But
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: I wish this game was a little bit more four
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: o'clock window, primetime window, because it does feel like two
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: teams that are are big time playoff teams, you know,
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: in both conferences, and it's kind of a bummer that
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: the game is at one o'clock, but it is what
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: it is. All right, let's get to some of these emails.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: I haven't done emails.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: I was gonna say, we haven't done emails in a minute.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: And we have a lot of emails. So oh, let's
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: get to some of these emails. That's a Kyle Williams question.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: We already kind of went over that a little bit.
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: All right, I'm gonna do you want to answer answer
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: this question about dead cap because Fred yesterday did he
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: did do this. He was reading this email about dead
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: cap and did not want to answer this question because
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: it's you know, mundane and boring to talk about dead cap.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: So would you please man explain to me how dead
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: cap works. We always hear certain players are untradable due
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: to the size of the contracts and the dead cap.
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: I understand that contracts have guaranteed money, but couldn't selling
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: couldn't the selling team we will move all the money
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: in contract to the buying team, US, eliminating any dead cap. No,
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: so the dead cap on the contract is related to
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: the guarantees and the base salary of the contract that
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: is already in escro headed towards the player, and that
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: dead cap is the responsibility of the team that signed
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: the contract. So you can't transfer dead cap, so that
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: is going to be the Patriots responsibility. For example, with
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: Kyle Duggart, they have about nine million dollars in dead
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: cap next year due to the Kyle Duggar trade. So
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: you hear this a lot with AJ Brown, who I
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: don't have the exact number, but I think AJ Brown
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: has something like fifty million dollars in dead cap if
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: he's traded by the Eagles right now. On the flip side,
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: the way that the Jets structured Sauce Gardner's extension, they
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: don't have a ton of dead cap because they didn't
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: pay him a lot of money up front, so they
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: kind of left their options open there a little bit.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: So that's dead cap is the responsibility of the team
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: that's trading the player.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: Always is fifty nine million in dead cap for AJ
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: Brown this year, forty three million from next year.
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: So that being said, there are instances where teams have
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: had a lot of dead cap and rated the player
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: anyway or cut the player. Anyway. The Broncos did this
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: with Russell Wilson a couple of years ago, and they
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: just ate it and they just managed the dead cap
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: for that season, and they were able to figure it out.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: You know, it's not ideal, but they were able to
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: figure it out.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: What I think people get confused about with dead cap
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: I'll try to think of an example that dead cap
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: is not lost cap space in the sense that, Okay,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: so Kyle Darry, right, they've nine million dollars in dead cap.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: I don't I don't know that number off top my head.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna trust there. But the nine million dollars dead
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: cap on Kyle Doug's contract, his original cap hit was fourteen. Sure,
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: so the Patriots have a nine million dollar dead cap
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: charge against him. But they still open up five million dollars, right,
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: So they opened up some. You don't open up all
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: of it. You opened up some. But some players it
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: is possible a J. Brown's like this, the dead cap
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: can exceed the cap savings. So for it, because it
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: can if there's a bunch of details in the schedule
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: of the contracts. But basically, right, so AJ Brown's cap
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: hit or AJ Brown's dead cap is fifty nine million
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: dollars because when you cut a player, sometimes the money's
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: due when you cut him, so it moves money up.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: AJ Brown's dead cap numbers fifty nine million. His cap
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: hit because the way the contract is structured is only
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: seventeen million, So they would lose forty two million in
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: cap space that they would otherwise have if they didn't
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: trade AJ Brown. So dead cap space is not necessarily
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: cap space loss. You can open up money cutting a
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: player that has dead cap space, You're just not going
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: to open up it. Dead money is what you owe him,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: regardless off he's on the roster or not. That's not
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: the same as I don't know the term for it.
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: I guess cap savings is the difference between that player's
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: cap hit and the money you owe him if you
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: cut him.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: Right. So basically, the dead cap is tied to the
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: base salary that's guaranteed to the player, whereas the money
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: you're talking about is per game roster bonuses, workout bonuses,
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: incentive packages like if you know, he hits a certain
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: amount of games, or he makes a Pro Bowl or
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: they make the playoffs or whatever. So all those different
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: things are things that the player has to earn over
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: the life of the contract by his play on the field,
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: So that's not guaranteed to him. So that's why when
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: you cut a player like Kyle dugger he has X
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: amount and dead cap which is tied to his base salary. Yeah,
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: but then he might have had some incentives or bonuses
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: or whatever. That money falls off the cap, right, it's
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: just a dead cap that stays on the salary cap.
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: So they'll have, you know, some dead cap next year
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: as a team. In general, I think it's about twenty
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: five to thirty million. Now, again that's not that's not
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: a deal breaker.
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: It's a little high, but like every team has dead cap,
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: but it.
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: Doesn't mean that they are hamstrung against the cap and
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: they can't do anything.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: It's just I think they're supposed to have about fifty million.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's just tied mostly to the fact that
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: they've moved on from some holdovers that darn't fits. You know,
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: Jabriel Peppers, Kyle Duggar, you know, players like that that
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: they signed to these extensions that ended up not being fits.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: So that was a very long answer, but I think
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: it was very.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: I was getting nervous talking about that stuff. I know,
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: Miguel is the expert. Yeah you want who the Patriots
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: are still paying this year dead cap. Sure so Duggar, Godshaw, Peppers,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: Juju Smith, Schuster and they still have Well, I guess
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: this year doesn't matter. I should do next year because
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: this year is kind of in the books. It's done.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Their dead money next year quarter over the cap. Kyle
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: Dougar's twelve, Little over twelve, Jabrill Peppers is three, Jalen
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: Polk is one point nine, Kendrick Bourne's one point four,
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: and then these guys are all less than a million.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: Keon White Lane, Robinson, Javon Baker, Braden Swinston City.
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: So yeah, so it's not again like this is not
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: me saying that they now have an excuse to not
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: spend any money next offseason. It's not anything close to that.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: It's just trying to explain, you know, the new on.
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: Some of these gets. But the other sports ones get funny,
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: like everybody knows about Bobby Venia, but like, yeah, the
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: Red Sox like still paying Manny. That's different money.
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: Different money is is maybe one of the most bananas things.
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: Well in basketball, there is like when they cut guys.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: They can they can pro rate the dead cap hit. Yeah, so,
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: like I think the Celtics are still paying Blake Griffin
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: Blake Griffin, I'm pretty sure still for a while they
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: were paying Dimitri's Jackson for a while.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, all right, next question, you here more of
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: a football question than a than a salary cap question.
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: The Celtics are still paying playing Blake Griffin.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: So they were paying KG for until like just a
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: couple of years ago.
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: Yeah, well it's a cap hold. I don't know, like
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: technically that works, but he's on the books there.
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: So Brendan and Philly asks, did this Falcons solve Drake
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: May with their defensive So is it something that we
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: can expect other defenses to replicate. I don't think they
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: solved Drake May necessarily. Now. To their credit, they got
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: beat early on a couple of crossing routes, especially the
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: big one to Pop.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and they were they.
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: Called coverages moving forward where they adjusted nicely to some
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: of those and that, you know, I guess it depends
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: on what exactly you interpret the call. You know, I
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: would interpret them as like cut crosses. You know, one
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: cross is you know, typically what it's called where basically
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: you have a primary man coverage defender and he's going
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: to run across the field with the crossing route, and
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: once it declares as a crossing route, he's going to
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: pass the crossing route off to a safety and then
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: he's going to fall off and he's going to replace
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: the safety. So basically there's a robber a safety in
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: the middle of the field. That guy overtakes the crossing route,
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: the safety does, and then the corner becomes the new
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: robber in the middle of the defense. The Patriots used
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: to run this coverage all the time with Belichick. It
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: was one of their staples, and so as the game
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: wore on, especially after Pop hit the fifty eight yarder,
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: they started calling these cut coverages where they were cutting
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: the crossing routes and that did the Patriots, I think,
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: kind of thought they had him on the crossing routes
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: and it did kind of throw a wrench in their
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: in their play calling and in their game plan. So
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: tip of the cap to Atlanta for that. The interception
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: to Hunter Henry was one of these coverages where Henry
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: read it as single high because he had one high
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: safety in the middle of the field. But Drake May
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: saw the defender cutting the crossing route, sitting on the
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: other side of the field, and he just wanted Henry
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: to just look for the football and just settle right
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: in between that open space, and they didn't. They weren't
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: on the same page, and Henry kept running and Drake
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: threw it and it was a pick. So I think
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: that that that was more of like, you know, like
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: a system breakdown that I would say it was a
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: Drake May breakdown. Like I don't think that he specifically
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: did anything that made me feel that like, oh no,
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: like this is now they the book you know on
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: Drake May. It didn't feel like that, and more just
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: felt like they the Falcons, to their credit, kind of
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: got to feel for it, probably towards the end of
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: the first half and then adjusted.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: And as I mean, they got to him a ton,
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: and he felt sped up at points in that game.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: That's one of the best pass rushers in the league.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: Not every team is going to be able to you know,
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: first of all, they send five a lot. Not every
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: team's gonna be able to send five. Not every team's
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: gonna be able to send five with the personnel that
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: Tampa had or that Atlanta has. Yeah, if the book
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: on Drake may is being a very good defensive team,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: the book maybe out. I don't think there was anything
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: schematically in there that would I would call the book
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: on Drake May. So I think it's funny because he
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: plays worse against good defenses.
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: Go figure, Well, that's a good point because I I
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: understand that Atlanta has some like probably fatal flaws. Yeah,
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: I'm not really sure Raheem Morris is the right answer there.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: All right. I wanted to get this from the game. Yeah,
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: what'd you think of the punt? What did the I'm
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: actually meant to ask you this. I meant to text
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: you this. What did the maths say about the punt?
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: Punt? I remember lotting this up in real time punt.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: So I would have gone, yeah, because one first down,
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: regardless of field position, you're not getting the ball back right,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: and you know the way Drake London's playing, throw it up,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: maybe get a penalty something like that.
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: Right, Oh, I know it's tough. Yeah, I kind of
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: thought that in real time too. I'm with you. I
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: because of just Drake Lonon is just mossing.
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: Everybody likes also like they need one first down in
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: the game's over.
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: I had one other weird thought on that. I'm curious
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: what you think. I would argue, This is a little facetious,
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: but not really. I would argue the Falcons would have
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: been better off going to the line on four and
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: twenty and spiking the ball than they were punting it.
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: Because it puts them on a short field. Well, so
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: it's like, basically you're arguing that even if you give
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: up points there, it's still a one.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: Well, they weren't. Quote the points were relevant. The Patriots
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: would have needed one first down to getting field goal range.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: They were not in field range, right, they were just
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: outside or would have been a long field goal. But like,
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: there's some risk in kicking the field goal because if
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: you don't get it. Now the Falcons get the ball midfield, and.
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: I thought you were going let them score.
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: That's well, no, no spike because there was two oh
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: three on the clock. Yeah, the punt wiped out the
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: two minute warning. The Falcons only the two timeouts. If
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: you spike the ball, it's gonna take less than three seconds,
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: right two oh one. Now there's a timeout after the
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: Patriots first play. If you get to stop time out,
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: after the second time out, after the third. Now they
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: either have to kick a really long field goal and
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: if they miss that, you're gonna get the ball at
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: midfield after using all three timeouts with more than a
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: minute left, and all you need is to get in
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: a field goal range. And if they get the first down,
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: what does it matter? If they get the first down
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: from their own twenty versus your forty, right, the game's over.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: I guess what it comes down to. We just do
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: football philosophy on the show, and I thought it was
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: an interesting one. What would you rather have in that moment?
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: Forty yards or forty seconds?
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: Forty seconds?
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: So I would argue the Falcons would have been better
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: off coming to the line because the clock was stuff.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: They wouldn't have had to rush it. That's a interesting
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: if if they had gone to the line and just
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: clock the ball right, they have been better off than punting.
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: So the thing that I think is crazy about that
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: because I love it and it's not people would say, thing,
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: it's logical.
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: People would say why not throw it away? Throw away
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: might take more than three seconds, like claw it right,
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: so you're gonna get like two to one. You're gonna Uh,
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: they're gonna get the ball back, but you get the
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: two minute warning.
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that that's I never even considered that as
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: an option. That that's a good one. Uh.
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: And now I'm not doing this all the time. If
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: it's fourth and ten, you probably go for it. Fourth
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: and twenty were probably you Either. To me, there's two options.
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: You throw it deep, hoping Drake London makes insane play,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: or you cop a penalty. To remember, Christian Zalz is
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: out of the game, so he's not out there. You
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: either try to draw a penalty or Drake London goes off.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: Or again, if that's me in the headset, I said
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: that in real time to Matthow said they should spike it.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: I think I said they should knee it, and then
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: I realized that knee is longer than a spike, so
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: I said they should clock it.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: These are the times, and I guess you could just
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: ask Frable, but like, these are the times that I
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: wish that we that we could do press conferences with
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: Stretch because like that's something that they would think about.
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: I know, like that's down to ask one of these guys,
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: like is there any is there any real Like I
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: obviously have my line of thinking. I feel like I've
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: put it out there relatively well yeah, but like I
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: would love to hear one of those guys thought because
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: all you need one first down ends the game, doesn't
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: matter where they get it right.
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: But if I would have to, I would bet that
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: John Striker Stretch has thought of that exact scenario and
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: he they would do something like that. Yeah, outside the
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: box like kind of you know, weird, but it's almost
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: like Bill taking the intentional safe.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: It's so it's kind of similar to the intentional safety thing,
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: where that that's more about field position. This is sacrificing
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: field position for clock. But so you're with me, you would,
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: let's say you were conscious with you that is logical.
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: But I this is not my area. So I'm so logical,
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: But I don't know if there's.
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: One day we're in chargement NFL team, right and you're
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: gonna be the coach obviously very and I've said on
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: the guy upstairs, Yeah, I go down to you. Evan
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: Spike it you call it, sure love it.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: You're gonna be upstairs like Stretch with the with the
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: super Well, this was with Ernie Ad We figured out, Yeah,
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: you're more Ernie because stretches. He's he's doing the numbers.
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: You're not going to do the numbers.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: No, I'm just telling you. Just spike it on fourth
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: and twenty down one.
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: It's not a terrible idea. Now, I thought you were
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: going let them score, the Patriots. But then if the
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: Patriots score, because.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: Wait, who let who score?
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: If the Falcons let the Patriots score.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: No, you can't do that. They're just going to go
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: down after the first down.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: Well they would, if they were smart, they would.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: Well, and Hunter Henry did.
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess the Patriots are too smart for that.
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: But my point was gonna actually just be to further it. Yeah,
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: so it was a one point game. Yeah, if the
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: Patriots score a touchdown because they spike it and they
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: get on a short field and they spare a touchdown,
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: now it's a seven point games. Now the Patriots go
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: for two, maybe you gotta go for two. There's no
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: difference between the seven in an eight point game when
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: the kickers missing extra points are kind of its go
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: for two. All right, let's take this last call and
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: then we got to wrap it up. Yeah, that's good.
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: Austin is in Manchester. What's up? Bostin.
- 1:44:13Speaker 10: Hey, Evan, Hey, I saw you guys were talking earlier
- 1:44:16Speaker 10: in the show about just the lack of presence we
- 1:44:19Speaker 10: have on zone coverage and obviously the pass didn't make
- 1:44:22Speaker 10: any moves of the trade deadline. What do you think
- 1:44:25Speaker 10: they should be looking at for this next coming draft.
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: Thanks guys, Yeah, thanks for the call. Austin. Yeah, you know,
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: it's something that has been on my mind with their
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: zone coverages. I just think there's too much space underneath
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: a lot of their zones and the ball's just coming
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: out too quickly. Now, it's always a balance of you know,
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: we're talking mostly when they play these zones that I'm
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: I'm referring to, it's first or second down, so you're
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: and it's between the twenties, right, So you're talking a
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: lot about it's kind of the bend, don't break thing,
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: And there's an element of that, like when you play
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: NFL offenses, especially NFL offenses, good ones that are explosive
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: and can make big plays down the field, Like do
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: you really want to be first and ten from the
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: twenty five and you're in press man across the board?
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: You know, I think there's a little bit of a
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: misconception about how much man coverage teams really actually play.
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: Like even the top teams in man coverage are still
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: playing more zone than man. Like we're talking like the
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: teams that lead the league in man coverage rate are
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: usually around forty forty five percent. So it's not a
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: league where everybody that teams are playing like seventy five
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: percent man. It just it's too hard. It's too hard
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: to do that. So when you talk about man coverage,
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: it's mostly third down. You know, a lot of teams
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: will well, their man coverage rate explodes on third down.
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: And then it's also you know, situational type of stuff.
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: So it's not a ton of early down man because
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: these offenses are just too explosive and they're too good.
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: Now that being said, I would, yeah, I would like
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: to see the Patriots be a little bit tighter. You know,
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: we all don't like it, and I know it drives
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: fans nuts when the corners outside are giving eight yards
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: a cushion and they just run like a five yard
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: hitch and turn around and catch the ball and it's
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: a ten yard completion on first down. It drives us
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: all nuts. Now that being said, the alternative is getting
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: up on the line of scrimmage and getting beat over
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: the top for fifty yard play. So these are the
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: as a coach like, that's sort of the balance that
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: you have to strike here. It's an interesting point in
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: terms of the draft. I mean, we got a long
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: way to go. They're seven and two. I'm enjoying.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: Give me a short list, give me your big three
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: needs right now.
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: I'm enjoying the ride.
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: Just off the top of your head. Big three needs
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: right now.
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: Going spine to the defense, edge, linebacker, safety, offense. I
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: think that offensively, i'd supplement free agency. I think you
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: need a guard. I'm obviously always open to wide receiver,
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: top wide receivers, you know Wattle, aj Brown, you know,
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: guy like that is always on the call. Like you
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: need another running back, probably, but I don't think you
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: need to draft or pay one big. You know, use
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: a big time asset, whether it's cap space or a
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: high draft pick on a running back. So yeah, I
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: would like to see, like you know, Rabel did it
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: with Landry, Like draft one of your types at edge rusher,
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: and let's see Mike Rabel develop like a first round
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: talent at it.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: It's David Bailey at edge rusher, Like, I.
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: Think that would be really good for this team to
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: see him out there with the pad on and you know, doing.
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: I like, I mean, I think edges On there especially.
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: We'll see what happens with Chase On. I'd like an
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: athletic linebacker. I do put whether it's getting a right tackle,
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: you know, as a long term answer for offensive line,
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: would they probably need one top one hundred pick on
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: the offensive line, whether that whether that's a guard, whether
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: that's a tack, a right tackle. So you're would you
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: be in on a linebacker like in the first round.
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: Like an off ball linebacker. No, No, but that's a
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: value that's a nerd thing, that's a value thing.
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: Well, but like that's going to solve a lot of
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: problems for him because there are a couple of not
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: a lot, there are a couple guys that I think
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: are going to be in their conversation.
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: Well, you're gonna have Spallane and so you're really looking
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: for that weak side sideline to side, like the whole
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: cliche thing.
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: Well, that's what that's what this draft did. Like, that's
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: the linebackers.
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: So I would definitely, you know, if we're talking about
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: day two then absolutely, and it's been it's been a
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: minute since they've used a top one hundred pick on
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: like a pure off ball linebacker. They did go kind
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: of nerd on on us in that respect that they
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: kind of devalued that position at the end with Belichick.
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: So I could see it in terms, But if it's
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: going to be first round, you have to draft like
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: it has to be like a.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: Real quant one more wear are you on? Because we
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: talked about this like a couple of weeks ago, using
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: a high pick on the tight end. Maybe not first round,
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: but like top fifty pick on a tight end.
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: I like it in the respect that I think that
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: you really you need to keep adding for Drake May.
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: You can't get complacent and stop adding at the skill position.
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: So I want to see them continue to add. But
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: I don't know if this tight end class is going
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: to have the guys that are worth picking. If that
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: makes sense, that's fair. Yeah, all right, we got to
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: wrap it up. Patriots Unfiltered is going to be on
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: here in about ten minutes at noon. We'll be back
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: next week. It's going to be abbreviated week, but we'll
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: still be on Wednesday at ten am of course, the
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: Patriots play Thursday night football against the Jets next week,
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: so we're going to be doing a show on Wednesday,
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: but it's kind of like we're doing the show on Saturday,
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: so it's going to be a little different. Yeah, so
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: that'll be interesting, but we'll see you guys then. Thanks
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: for watching.
