- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio. It is a big day here on NFL
- 0:19Speaker 1: Now because it is our last day for a little bit,
- 0:21Speaker 1: going on a hiatus. We do this every May post
- 0:24Speaker 1: draftso we'll have fun, make it good, and we're happy
- 0:27Speaker 1: that you're here with us. From our newsroom in Los Angeles.
- 0:30Speaker 1: My name is Andrew Ceciliana. Ryan Tannehill's on the podium
- 0:33Speaker 1: in Nashville. Will tell you what you had to say
- 0:35Speaker 1: coming up in a little bit. We open this show
- 0:37Speaker 1: with news, not surprisingly from New York News, that Aaron
- 0:41Speaker 1: Rodgers is getting another one of his buddies to the Jets.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Tom Pelsero have this news this morning. It's the fact
- 0:47Speaker 1: that Randall Cobb is going to New York. Not exactly
- 0:51Speaker 1: a shocker. Their BFFs. They do discount double check commercials together.
- 0:56Speaker 1: But cob is going to be thirty three come August.
- 1:00Speaker 2: But why not.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It'll be a crowded Wide receiver room. But Tom, it'll
- 1:06Speaker 1: do nothing, you know, to cut down on the Twitter
- 1:10Speaker 1: snark that Rodgers is actually GM He's not. It is
- 1:12Speaker 1: Joe Douglas's job. He did the drafting, but it is
- 1:15Speaker 1: another one of Aaron's buddies.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Aaron Rodgers Randall Cobb are very close friends, and Aaron
- 1:22Speaker 3: Rodgers has spoken multiple times in the past spout he
- 1:25Speaker 3: sees value in keeping older players who might want one
- 1:29Speaker 3: more run at a ring. So he brings Randall Cobb,
- 1:33Speaker 3: the latest former Packer who is going to be headed
- 1:35Speaker 3: to New York on a one year deal. As you mentioned,
- 1:38Speaker 3: Randall Cobbs can be thirty three before the season. He
- 1:40Speaker 3: made one Pro Bowl. He was back in twenty fourteen,
- 1:42Speaker 3: which is nine years ago. At this point, nobody's going
- 1:45Speaker 3: to argue the Randall Cobb is not at this point
- 1:48Speaker 3: a declining player. But again, as you bring in a
- 1:51Speaker 3: new offense with Nathaniel Hack who's very close to Aaron Rodgers,
- 1:54Speaker 3: having a receiver who knows that offense in addition to
- 1:57Speaker 3: Alan Lazard can only help. And we'll see what type
- 1:59Speaker 3: of role if any Erana kobba acsually ends up playing
- 2:02Speaker 3: come the season. Aaron Rodgers, when he came back to
- 2:04Speaker 3: Green Bay in twenty twenty one, also made abundantly clear
- 2:07Speaker 3: if he was coming back, he wanted Randall Cobb to
- 2:10Speaker 3: be coming with him. The Packers traded for Randall Cobb
- 2:12Speaker 3: hit about eight hundred yards over two seasons combined. Here
- 2:15Speaker 3: and now he joins Garret Wilson and Alan Lazard and
- 2:19Speaker 3: me Coole Hardman and Corey Davis who's still on the roster,
- 2:21Speaker 3: and Denzel Mims who's still on the roster. It's going
- 2:24Speaker 3: to be an interesting group to see how this shakes
- 2:27Speaker 3: out and how much, if at all, Randall Cobb gets
- 2:29Speaker 3: on the field.
- 2:29Speaker 1: He has caught more than five hundred passes from from
- 2:32Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers, so there certainly has to be some value there.
- 2:35Speaker 1: He can still make some plays. But as we talked
- 2:37Speaker 1: about last hour, what happens if one day Joe Douglas
- 2:39Speaker 1: has to cut Randall Cobbs has become like a Jay
- 2:42Speaker 1: Coomero on the podium. Situation remains to VC. Thank you
- 2:46Speaker 1: Tom Pellisero there. Appreciate you Tom. With the latest Rogers
- 2:50Speaker 1: always having fun with his new teammates. He praised Joe
- 2:52Speaker 1: Douglas when he signed last week when the trade went
- 2:54Speaker 1: down for drafting guys like Aaron Wilson or this guy,
- 2:57Speaker 1: saw Us Gardner. They went to the Knicks game last night.
- 2:59Speaker 1: It's that course side saw the Knicks win, go up
- 3:02Speaker 1: two games to none on the heat like you know,
- 3:05Speaker 1: who wasn't there. We haven't seen Garrett Wilson out on
- 3:09Speaker 1: the town.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Hey man, I just I just asked him this morning.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I said, I was trying to figure ouhy I couldn't
- 3:14Speaker 4: get though tickets to the to the next game yesterday,
- 3:17Speaker 4: and I was watching the ESPN broadcast. I see him
- 3:19Speaker 4: and Sauce and and all that they their group taking
- 3:22Speaker 4: up all the seats, you know, so I got to
- 3:24Speaker 4: figure out how I can get in with them, and
- 3:26Speaker 4: and uh buma seat.
- 3:27Speaker 2: We know we have in this room.
- 3:28Speaker 4: We know we've known what we've had in this room,
- 3:30Speaker 4: and then you add someone like that, with the accolades
- 3:33Speaker 4: that he has and the ability that he has, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 4: it's it's I mean, we we expect to compete with
- 3:41Speaker 4: you know, everyone in the league, be everyone in the league,
- 3:43Speaker 4: be one of the better teams in the league. You know,
- 3:44Speaker 4: we'd expect to do that. And you know that's always
- 3:47Speaker 4: been the mindset. And when we did it follow through
- 3:50Speaker 4: on that, we know we've always been upset. But you know,
- 3:52Speaker 4: I'd be lying if I said that we had someone
- 3:56Speaker 4: you know, if Aaron Rodgers pedigree and the expectation you know,
- 4:00Speaker 4: it doesn't go up a little bit, you know, and
- 4:02Speaker 4: and you know that's that's.
- 4:03Speaker 2: That's how it is, and this and this industry, you know.
- 4:06Speaker 4: So we're excited to have him, and we know what
- 4:09Speaker 4: comes with that. We know that all of a sudden,
- 4:10Speaker 4: you know, eyes are on us, and that we got
- 4:12Speaker 4: we got to back it up every time we take
- 4:13Speaker 4: the field, you know, practice or game, and we're excited
- 4:16Speaker 4: to prove that every week.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Garrett Wilson reports.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I kind of joke and gibts to say he's a
- 4:21Speaker 1: shut in, and hey, it's it's cool that Rogers is
- 4:24Speaker 1: there hanging out with sauce. But whether it's him or
- 4:27Speaker 1: Elijah Vera Tucker or some others today they use the
- 4:31Speaker 1: phrase like starstruck or surreal. I think they're still kind
- 4:34Speaker 1: of getting used to the fact that Rogers is there
- 4:37Speaker 1: and now they're getting Randall Cobb.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Listen.
- 4:41Speaker 5: I think it's surreal for everybody, including the reporters, to
- 4:45Speaker 5: be honest, it is strange that Aaron Rodgers is out
- 4:47Speaker 5: there on the Jets practice field. I think Randall Cobb,
- 4:51Speaker 5: as you were pointing out earlier, let's see how this
- 4:54Speaker 5: shakes out with Randall Cobb and let's see where we are.
- 4:56Speaker 5: I don't think anybody expects that he is going to
- 4:59Speaker 5: be a monster contributor to the offense once the season starts,
- 5:02Speaker 5: but we have talked about this all along. The whole
- 5:05Speaker 5: point of this is to have Aaron Rodgers be as
- 5:08Speaker 5: comfortable as he can be and to accelerate everybody else's
- 5:12Speaker 5: learning curve. And if Randall Cobb and Alan Lozart can
- 5:15Speaker 5: help tell Garrett Wilson this is what he likes, this
- 5:18Speaker 5: is what he wants you to do, that's all to
- 5:20Speaker 5: the good for the New York Jets. The whole point
- 5:23Speaker 5: is to ease the transition. Aaron Rodgers has been very
- 5:26Speaker 5: candid about that that he knows that there is going
- 5:29Speaker 5: to be a learning curve. He has to learn his
- 5:31Speaker 5: new teammates. His new teammates have to learn him. This
- 5:35Speaker 5: is all part of the process. I don't know if
- 5:37Speaker 5: there are going to be any other former Packers joining
- 5:39Speaker 5: the Jets.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Certainly, the Randall Cobb arrival was not a surprise, but
- 5:46Speaker 5: I think seeing him out there, I don't think there's
- 5:48Speaker 5: any question Garrett Wilson is receiver number one. He is
- 5:52Speaker 5: a super talent and everything that comes after that is
- 5:56Speaker 5: just about trying to get this offense and these players
- 5:59Speaker 5: on the same page with Aaron Rodgers and with Nate
- 6:02Speaker 5: Hackett's offense.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone's made the Jordy Nell's jokes or the Jay
- 6:06Speaker 1: Kumero jokes. We were joking about Eddie Lacy this morning
- 6:09Speaker 1: in the newsroom as well. I just texted James Jones
- 6:12Speaker 1: who says he can give a few reps, but only
- 6:14Speaker 1: in the red zone. Don't expect him to actually run.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Those are the jets up of the Giants. Because the
- 6:19Speaker 1: Giants duty actually have their rookies in rookie mini camp
- 6:23Speaker 1: this weekend. What are they expecting to see there in
- 6:25Speaker 1: East Rutherford.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Well, we're going to get a look at a rookie
- 6:29Speaker 5: class that's really been widely heralded as an a class.
- 6:33Speaker 5: They at the first three picks, especially if the draft
- 6:36Speaker 5: addressed big needs for the New York Giants. Deontay Banks
- 6:39Speaker 5: the cornerback, which was the biggest need going into the draft.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Schmidt's the center. He's going to be a Day one starter.
- 6:45Speaker 5: They lost two centers in free agency, and then of
- 6:47Speaker 5: course the wide receiver Jalm Hyatt, which all of the fans.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Giants fans were waiting to see if they were going
- 6:52Speaker 5: to draft. Hyatt fell into their laps. There were some
- 6:55Speaker 5: people who thought he might go late in the first round,
- 6:58Speaker 5: and they grabbed him in the third. So these are
- 7:00Speaker 5: three picks that really could be Day one starters for
- 7:03Speaker 5: the New York Giants. We'll see what they look like
- 7:04Speaker 5: when they get on the fields. But this roster has
- 7:07Speaker 5: undergone a dramatic makeover, especially on the offensive side of
- 7:11Speaker 5: the ball. They've given Daniel Jones a whole bunch of
- 7:13Speaker 5: weapons this offseason, and now it is time to see
- 7:17Speaker 5: what it looks like with Daniel Jones in and as
- 7:19Speaker 5: we turn the page further into the off season, what
- 7:22Speaker 5: they do with Saquon Barkley's contract. When the draft ended,
- 7:26Speaker 5: they said they were going to reconnect with Barkley and
- 7:29Speaker 5: his camp and see if an extension made sense. That
- 7:32Speaker 5: was how they phrased it. So we will see if
- 7:34Speaker 5: it makes sense, and we'll see if there is an
- 7:36Speaker 5: extension in the offing.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Love Rookie Minicamps. First chance to see these guys in
- 7:41Speaker 1: their new jerseys on the field. Five years ago this Friday,
- 7:44Speaker 1: we did our show from East Rutherford just to see
- 7:46Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley in his Giants jersey for the very first time.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Gendie Batista, their life in New York. Thank you, Judy.
- 7:56Speaker 1: It's a pretty cool story here. I know the Deuce
- 7:59Speaker 1: Vaughn story was great with Cowboys's dad Chris Vaughn there obviously,
- 8:03Speaker 1: but the fact that Joey poured Junior is going to
- 8:06Speaker 1: his old man's team. He had to wait until Friday
- 8:10Speaker 1: with the first pick of the second round, but he
- 8:12Speaker 1: is a stealer. It's also Nitney Lai. Here's his head coach,
- 8:15Speaker 1: live from Hatty Valley. James Franklin joins us on NFL Now, Coach,
- 8:20Speaker 1: thanks for taking the time.
- 8:20Speaker 6: How are you, Paulsome appreciate the opportunity to be with you, guys.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I know Joey wanted to go on Thursday, but this
- 8:28Speaker 1: just felt right, didn't it. This felt perfect. What was
- 8:30Speaker 1: your reaction when you saw the Steelers announce Joey Porter
- 8:34Speaker 1: Junior's name.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Yeah, it was hard, obviously, you sit in that draft
- 8:39Speaker 6: room and around all those families and those other great players,
- 8:43Speaker 6: and you know that's tough, you know, but he handled
- 8:46Speaker 6: it with class like he always does.
- 8:49Speaker 7: Joey was raised extremely well.
- 8:51Speaker 6: Mom and Dad did a phenomenal job with him, and
- 8:54Speaker 6: obviously he's got a lot of traits that NFL teams won.
- 8:58Speaker 6: You know, his length is unreal, especially when you talk
- 9:02Speaker 6: about his movement with thirty four inch arms and six
- 9:06Speaker 6: foot two and can flat out run. I think they're
- 9:10Speaker 6: gonna love them. So I'm just happy things worked out
- 9:12Speaker 6: the way they did. Obviously, you know, waiting to day
- 9:15Speaker 6: two was a little bit challenging, but then he came
- 9:17Speaker 6: off quickly and went to his hometown Steelers, which is awesome.
- 9:21Speaker 1: You know, some of the best conversations here's some of
- 9:23Speaker 1: the conversations that obviously coaches and GM's used the most
- 9:25Speaker 1: are conversations with head coaches like yourself. So how does
- 9:29Speaker 1: that conversation go though between you and say Mike Tomlin
- 9:31Speaker 1: when Mike Tomins known him since he was a little kid.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Yeah, there wasn't a whole lot that we needed to
- 9:39Speaker 6: tell those guys.
- 9:41Speaker 7: Uh.
- 9:41Speaker 6: You know, Joey's been not only around the organization since
- 9:45Speaker 6: the time he was a young kid. I loved that
- 9:47Speaker 6: picture right there, but even like in training camps and
- 9:52Speaker 6: everything else, he's just been around the you know, the
- 9:54Speaker 6: organization and the whole, you know, the whole organization.
- 9:58Speaker 7: Knows him, obviously.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Coach Tomlin knows him extremely well. So there's a lot
- 10:02Speaker 6: of value that comes with that. They know the type
- 10:04Speaker 6: of person and the type of competitor they're getting as well.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Obviously, he wasn't the only Nitney Lion draft that you
- 10:10Speaker 1: guys had. Six players drafted, Breton Strange in the second round,
- 10:14Speaker 1: just Scrugs in the second, jay Or Brown in the third.
- 10:18Speaker 1: We were just talking about the Packers though, and talking
- 10:20Speaker 1: about the playmakers they drafted for Jordan Love. They also
- 10:23Speaker 1: drafted your quarterback Sean Clifford in the fifth round. James,
- 10:27Speaker 1: What are they getting there in Green Bay.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Well, it's a great story.
- 10:31Speaker 6: You know, here's a guy that took kind of an
- 10:33Speaker 6: unconventional path, was at Penn State, you know for six years,
- 10:37Speaker 6: used the COVID year to come back and trusted me
- 10:42Speaker 6: in the program and really himself and came back for
- 10:46Speaker 6: that sixth year, played extremely well for US, played unbelievable,
- 10:51Speaker 6: probably played his best game in the bowl game of
- 10:54Speaker 6: his career in the Rose Bowl against Utah, and now
- 10:57Speaker 6: ends up getting drafted. He'll probably higher than he anticipated,
- 11:02Speaker 6: but he's great in the meeting rooms. Football IQ is
- 11:06Speaker 6: off the charts. He'll prepare the right way.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I think they're going to really like.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I thought it was pretty cool that he got another
- 11:13Speaker 1: shot to play in the Rose Bull granted before a
- 11:15Speaker 1: much smaller crowd at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl the College
- 11:18Speaker 1: All Star Games. So finished at the Rose Bowl and
- 11:20Speaker 1: then came back to the Rose Bowl as well. So
- 11:22Speaker 1: we had Jeff Hafley on from Boston College a couple
- 11:25Speaker 1: of weeks ago. We're talking about Zay Flowers and how
- 11:27Speaker 1: important it was for his program that Zay Flowers decided
- 11:31Speaker 1: to pass on the NFL draft, pass on the transfer portal,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and go back to play last season. Olufashanu had a
- 11:38Speaker 1: similar decision here at the top ten would have looked
- 11:42Speaker 1: a lot different last Thursday. If your left tackle decided
- 11:47Speaker 1: to throw his name in this draft, why did he
- 11:49Speaker 1: come back, coach, and what does it mean for your program?
- 11:54Speaker 6: Well, you know, it's probably different than you're going to expect.
- 11:56Speaker 6: I met with him and his family and told him
- 11:59Speaker 6: that he really should strongly consider coming out based on
- 12:02Speaker 6: all the projection and all the information I was getting.
- 12:06Speaker 7: But him and the family.
- 12:07Speaker 6: Had always planned on being here four years. He's a
- 12:12Speaker 6: phenomenal student. He's got a chance to be an academic
- 12:15Speaker 6: All American here as well. He has not graduated yet.
- 12:19Speaker 6: He wanted to graduate and finish his degree. But the
- 12:21Speaker 6: other thing that's kind of crazy is at the time
- 12:25Speaker 6: that we were having this discussion, Olu was only nineteen
- 12:29Speaker 6: years old, so that factored into the decision as well.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And obviously we're.
- 12:34Speaker 6: Happy to have him back and have a plan on
- 12:37Speaker 6: how we're going to handle him. You know, what we
- 12:40Speaker 6: did this spring and then what we're going to do
- 12:41Speaker 6: in training camp as well.
- 12:43Speaker 7: But mom and Dad have been phenomenal and Olu's been phenomenal,
- 12:46Speaker 7: and we want to make sure, just like we have
- 12:49Speaker 7: with other players, that this turns out to be the
- 12:52Speaker 7: right decision for him and the program.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Insane.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Only nineteen years old, he would have been to the
- 12:56Speaker 1: top ten, maybe the first tackle taken. And I remember
- 12:59Speaker 1: he gave an interview after he made the decision, and
- 13:02Speaker 1: so one said, hey, do you think you're ready and
- 13:04Speaker 1: he didn He said, yes, but he's coming back. You
- 13:08Speaker 1: guys are better for it. He'll be better for it
- 13:10Speaker 1: as well. James Franklin, head coach at Penn State, Thanks
- 13:13Speaker 1: for coming on. Hope to see us soon.
- 13:15Speaker 6: Thank you, have a great day, you.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Too, James Franklin. Everybody live there in Happy Valley.
- 13:21Speaker 2: The going to.
- 13:25Speaker 8: Withy both pick in the twenty twenty three NFL Draft,
- 13:29Speaker 8: the Indianapolis Colts collect Anthony Richardson qurterback Florida.
- 13:35Speaker 1: You will be going back to Indianapolis where he crushed
- 13:39Speaker 1: the combine and he is the quarterback of the moment.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I'm good, dynamic, Claire clair Francis.
- 13:45Speaker 4: You know I'm gonna work car I'm gonna be a leader,
- 13:46Speaker 4: but it's time to make my own legas and now
- 13:48Speaker 4: no more chouncterize.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Anthony Richardson left enjoy it all.
- 13:51Speaker 1: He's happy to thank you, and that moment begins this
- 13:54Speaker 1: weekend where the Colts get on the field for some
- 13:56Speaker 1: rookie minicamp work. There is Anthony Richardson with the owner
- 13:59Speaker 1: of the Indianapolis Colts, mister Jimersay, holding up that number
- 14:04Speaker 1: one new jersey. It's a new feel there for Nicole
- 14:08Speaker 1: Shane Stich. It obviously hy theer Stacy Dales and Cam
- 14:11Speaker 1: Wolfe as the head coach and the guy putting together
- 14:13Speaker 1: this offense. And it wasn't just Richardson. They drafted to
- 14:17Speaker 1: try to give this offense a little youth. Yeah, there's
- 14:21Speaker 1: no question.
- 14:21Speaker 9: I mean, they obviously added Josh Downs, but it all
- 14:24Speaker 9: starts with Anthony Richardson, Andrew and Cam and you know,
- 14:27Speaker 9: here's the blueprint, very simply teaching the lingo and the terminology,
- 14:31Speaker 9: get the fundamentals in order, and then let his talent
- 14:34Speaker 9: come to life, very much similar to the way general
- 14:36Speaker 9: manager Chris Ballard said he comes to life in terms
- 14:40Speaker 9: of his poise in the pocket when he is under duress.
- 14:43Speaker 9: So they want to let that talent flourish and let
- 14:45Speaker 9: those instincts play out. When I asked Anthony Richardson what
- 14:49Speaker 9: excites him most about Shane Steiken's offense and how he
- 14:53Speaker 9: will specifically thrive in it, he told me this and
- 14:55Speaker 9: I loved his response. I love how confident he is
- 15:00Speaker 9: in me and how much he believes that I will
- 15:02Speaker 9: do great things here. So there is all that mindset
- 15:06Speaker 9: instilled within this young man that is impressive. I just
- 15:08Speaker 9: mentioned Josh Downs. I love the fact that you compare
- 15:11Speaker 9: a wide receiver in the third round out of North
- 15:13Speaker 9: Carolina with Anthony Richardson and the talent that already exists
- 15:17Speaker 9: on this roster. This is a production machine when you
- 15:20Speaker 9: think about him in terms of his ability in the slot.
- 15:23Speaker 9: I remember being at the combine guys and he said,
- 15:25Speaker 9: nobody's quicker than I am. He is a competitor through
- 15:29Speaker 9: and through. And he told us also at the Combine,
- 15:31Speaker 9: I have been working the route tree since I was
- 15:33Speaker 9: in the sixth grade.
- 15:34Speaker 2: This is a football player.
- 15:35Speaker 9: He loves football and a really good culture fit. Kim
- 15:39Speaker 9: there in Indianapolis.
- 15:40Speaker 10: Stacy, I love what you said about his confidence, the
- 15:43Speaker 10: colt's confidence in him, and that's one thing you know,
- 15:46Speaker 10: talking with people close to Richardson.
- 15:48Speaker 2: He had a top thirty visits with six other teams.
- 15:50Speaker 10: He loved Indy's visit because he could tell their belief
- 15:54Speaker 10: in him.
- 15:54Speaker 2: And I love what their owner, Jim Ursay.
- 15:56Speaker 10: Said, Hey, he's got to play early. There was a
- 15:58Speaker 10: lot of speculation of oh, you got to sit him
- 16:01Speaker 10: for a year or two await because he may not
- 16:03Speaker 10: be quote unquote ready. Well, he's a guy who had
- 16:06Speaker 10: thirteen starts. The best way to get a guy ready
- 16:08Speaker 10: is to play him. And I also think there's a
- 16:10Speaker 10: misconception in Anthony Richards's game that you have to rebuild
- 16:14Speaker 10: his whole throwing motion. I spent a week with them
- 16:16Speaker 10: in Jacksonville in the pre draft process. He throws that
- 16:19Speaker 10: ball pure, you could hear it like a whistle, but
- 16:21Speaker 10: he has no hitches in his throws. And I've talked
- 16:23Speaker 10: to gms and head coaches who believe that he's going
- 16:26Speaker 10: to develop quicker than a lot of people realize it.
- 16:29Speaker 10: And you mentioned just the coaching element there. Shane Steichen
- 16:32Speaker 10: was there with Jalen Hurts. They've talked about implementing some
- 16:35Speaker 10: of the elements that Shane did with Jalen to get
- 16:37Speaker 10: that development with Anthony early on. And so I could
- 16:40Speaker 10: easily see three or four years from now, we're talking
- 16:42Speaker 10: about Anthony Richardson as the best quarterback in this draft,
- 16:45Speaker 10: and clearly the Colts believe that too.
- 16:47Speaker 1: He was drafted four. We had Bryce Young obviously drafted one.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Cam he's on the field next weekend with the Panthers
- 16:55Speaker 1: for their rookie mini camp. What are some of the
- 16:57Speaker 1: early things we're looking for there?
- 16:59Speaker 10: Yeah, I can't wait to see his relationship with their
- 17:01Speaker 10: second round pick, Jonathan Mingo.
- 17:03Speaker 2: The Panthers absolutely love Mingo.
- 17:05Speaker 10: In fact, they drafted him with the idea of those
- 17:08Speaker 10: two growing together. Andy Dalton is the Panthers backup quarterback.
- 17:12Speaker 10: And if you remember back in the day, the Bengals
- 17:14Speaker 10: drafted AJ Brown and Emmy AJ Green and they grew
- 17:17Speaker 10: together AJ Green and Andy Dalton. They have pictures of
- 17:20Speaker 10: Bryce Young and Mingo doing the same thing. And so
- 17:23Speaker 10: they've purposely surrounded Bryce Young with a group of big receivers.
- 17:28Speaker 10: All four of their top receivers are six two or taller,
- 17:31Speaker 10: so that Bryce Young can be that point guard for
- 17:33Speaker 10: them and get the ball to their playmakers. And I
- 17:36Speaker 10: remember just the lasting scene of my week in Carolina
- 17:39Speaker 10: with Bryce. There was about thirty minutes where he stood
- 17:42Speaker 10: on the field inside the stadium talking with Frank Reich,
- 17:45Speaker 10: their head coach, and their quarterback coach, Josh McCown, really
- 17:48Speaker 10: just soaking in the moment of what it means to
- 17:50Speaker 10: be the Carolina Panthers franchise quarterback. This is a team
- 17:53Speaker 10: that expects Bryce Young to be able to help them
- 17:56Speaker 10: compete for NFC South title in year one, and by
- 17:59Speaker 10: year two and year three, maybe even more.
- 18:01Speaker 1: The Tennessee Titans hope to be competing for an AFC
- 18:04Speaker 1: South title yet again, Stacy Dales, which has heard from
- 18:08Speaker 1: Ryan Tannehill who said, we've been down this road before
- 18:10Speaker 1: a little bit of deja voo, and that is seeing
- 18:13Speaker 1: his team draft a quarterback last year in the leak Willis.
- 18:15Speaker 1: This year it's Will Levis in the second round. What
- 18:18Speaker 1: went behind that move for new GM brand Carthon to
- 18:21Speaker 1: go get the Kentucky quarterback.
- 18:23Speaker 9: Andrew This is a really good point you raised, because
- 18:26Speaker 9: it's not just that the Titans drafted a quarterback, it's
- 18:29Speaker 9: the way in which they did it. They moved up
- 18:30Speaker 9: eight spots to the top of round two at thirty
- 18:33Speaker 9: three overall and took Will Levis. I really believe Will
- 18:36Speaker 9: Levis had a first round grade on their draft board,
- 18:39Speaker 9: but they literally could not pass on eleven with Peter Skaransky,
- 18:44Speaker 9: the tackle slash guard, because he was just too good
- 18:47Speaker 9: on their board. They coveted him so much. They only
- 18:50Speaker 9: had first one first round pick, so they take Skoronsky
- 18:52Speaker 9: at eleven and they move up that much to get
- 18:55Speaker 9: Will Levis. And I think they, more than anybody, had
- 18:58Speaker 9: the best process with Levis, who's just so intense, but
- 19:02Speaker 9: he's obviously been in the last two seasons in Pro
- 19:05Speaker 9: Style offenses, and you know, it was interesting when you
- 19:08Speaker 9: think about Levis and his comments after he said, I
- 19:11Speaker 9: didn't want to fall in love with one team through
- 19:13Speaker 9: the draft process because like that's out of my hands.
- 19:16Speaker 9: But if there was one that I did, it was
- 19:18Speaker 9: the Tennessee Titans, and it was really the meetings that
- 19:22Speaker 9: they had. The GM Ron Carthon talked about his diligency
- 19:26Speaker 9: in terms of how hard he works, extremely intelligent and bright,
- 19:30Speaker 9: but hardwired and tough. Will Levis comes across a little
- 19:35Speaker 9: bit hardwired and tough, and what a perfect fit in
- 19:38Speaker 9: a Mike Vrabel type team with all of the toughness
- 19:41Speaker 9: that he exudes as the head coach of this franchise.
- 19:45Speaker 9: And then ultimately and what they're trying to do to
- 19:48Speaker 9: move forward offensively, how good will that play action be
- 19:51Speaker 9: if Will Levis is back there now, Ryan Tannehill, this
- 19:54Speaker 9: is his team, but he certainly she'll be looking over
- 19:58Speaker 9: his shoulder right now. It is Tannehill obviously the starter,
- 20:01Speaker 9: Malik Willis is the backup, and then third on that
- 20:05Speaker 9: quarterback depth chart is will Levis. But he going to
- 20:08Speaker 9: put the work in now and it'll be interesting to
- 20:10Speaker 9: see how it plays out in Tennessee, but.
- 20:12Speaker 1: With Tannehill only with one year left of money on
- 20:15Speaker 1: that contract. Titan's rookies on the field next week for middicamp.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Thanks Stacy, and thank you. So we talk a lot
- 20:27Speaker 1: about Fau the number thirty one pick, the Chief's first pick.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Let's talk about their second round pick. That's for she
- 20:32Speaker 1: Rice third in the FBS last year with nearly fourteen
- 20:35Speaker 1: hundred yards receiving. He caught ninety six passes and now
- 20:56Speaker 1: he's catching passes either James Palmer from Patrick Mahomes. And
- 20:59Speaker 1: the reason he was holding up his phone he had
- 21:00Speaker 1: his number. Not that he couldn't have met him along
- 21:02Speaker 1: the road, but he met him actually throwing or working
- 21:06Speaker 1: with the Chiefs during their offseason program a couple of
- 21:09Speaker 1: weeks ago in Texas.
- 21:11Speaker 11: He had a chance to throw at Patrick Mahomes. Not
- 21:13Speaker 11: the only receiver in this draft that went down to
- 21:14Speaker 11: Texas and had a chance to throw with Pat As
- 21:17Speaker 11: General manager Brett Beach calls it the Patrick Mahomes effect.
- 21:19Speaker 11: Everybody wants to go down and throw with them, and
- 21:22Speaker 11: Mahomes obviously does report back to Beach and head coach
- 21:25Speaker 11: Andy Reid and gives him his opinion on these receivers,
- 21:28Speaker 11: and if you look at Rice.
- 21:29Speaker 2: He really feels a need that they were looking to fill.
- 21:32Speaker 11: There was a thought when the offseason hit they were
- 21:34Speaker 11: going to be bringing back Jujus Smith Schuster. He was
- 21:36Speaker 11: in their plans, but then he ends up getting the
- 21:38Speaker 11: money from New England that they were never going to match.
- 21:41Speaker 11: And now they believe Rice comes in with a similar
- 21:43Speaker 11: body type to kind of fill that role. A guy
- 21:45Speaker 11: that is a bigger bodied receiver at six foot over
- 21:47Speaker 11: two hundred pounds that can be a bigger slot type guy.
- 21:51Speaker 11: They think they can move them in different spots. They
- 21:53Speaker 11: love the way he is yards after the catch, kind
- 21:55Speaker 11: of like Kadarius Tony Kindea, like some other guys in
- 21:57Speaker 11: the mix here, the way he attacks the football. He
- 22:00Speaker 11: thinks he plays football like DeAndre Hopkins. Now, if that
- 22:02Speaker 11: ends up happening, that would be great for the camp
- 22:05Speaker 11: into the City Chiefs. But what he does fill is
- 22:07Speaker 11: he creates another player for Patrick Mahomes to be able
- 22:10Speaker 11: to move around. That's essentially kind of these chess pieces
- 22:13Speaker 11: that they find different spots. And Steve Smith, our colleague Andrew,
- 22:17Speaker 11: absolutely raves about Rice that he catches everything, very smart receiver,
- 22:22Speaker 11: This is another guy that fills a role that they
- 22:25Speaker 11: thought was going to be filled by Juju Smith Schuster
- 22:27Speaker 11: and ends up filling it in the draft.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Right, and the more weapons you can have, the more
- 22:30Speaker 1: fun that offense will always be. With Patrick Mahomes, let's
- 22:33Speaker 1: go to Denver, James, where you are. We've spent months
- 22:36Speaker 1: talking about maybe Sean Payton, George Payton trade one of
- 22:39Speaker 1: their wide receivers. They've got a surplus. Well they didn't
- 22:42Speaker 1: do that. They said they weren't going to do that,
- 22:44Speaker 1: but then they went out and with their first pick,
- 22:46Speaker 1: they don't have a lot of draft capital, they drafted
- 22:48Speaker 1: another wide receiver in Marvin Mims.
- 22:52Speaker 2: That was then interesting part.
- 22:53Speaker 11: Right, everybody was going, well, maybe they're going to trade
- 22:55Speaker 11: one of these wide receivers or from draft.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Capital, that's where they're a little bit deeper.
- 22:59Speaker 11: And then they go with their first pick and they
- 23:01Speaker 11: even move up to get Marvin Mims. Now there was
- 23:03Speaker 11: a group of receivers that they were in interest in there,
- 23:05Speaker 11: he was the one that they really were targeting and
- 23:07Speaker 11: wanted to make sure they got, so they did move up.
- 23:09Speaker 11: And then after that happened. My understanding this they didn't
- 23:11Speaker 11: get a couple of calls they won. Does this mean
- 23:13Speaker 11: now you're going to move somebody, But it doesn't look
- 23:15Speaker 11: like that's.
- 23:15Speaker 8: Going to happen.
- 23:16Speaker 11: Remember, they picked up the fifth year option on Jerry
- 23:18Speaker 11: Judy and Mims kind of fills that role right now.
- 23:20Speaker 11: That you saw kJ Hamler in who now has the
- 23:23Speaker 11: injury this offseason. It's going to be a little while
- 23:25Speaker 11: for him to come back. He is a speedster. They
- 23:28Speaker 11: love the speed and the versatility to play. He played
- 23:30Speaker 11: about fifty percent of the time in the slot, fifty
- 23:32Speaker 11: percent of the time outside. We know that Sean Payton
- 23:35Speaker 11: interchanges his receivers all over the field, but it's also
- 23:38Speaker 11: the special teams aspect. It has been a big focus
- 23:42Speaker 11: for Sean Payton since he arrived in Denver to fix
- 23:44Speaker 11: the special teams in Denver, one of the worst in football.
- 23:47Speaker 11: Andrew he believes that Mike Westoff, who came with him
- 23:49Speaker 11: to be the assistant head coach and help with the
- 23:51Speaker 11: special teams, one of the best special teams coaches that
- 23:54Speaker 11: he's ever seen. Mims is going to come in there
- 23:56Speaker 11: and probably be that punt returner day one. He fills
- 23:59Speaker 11: a couple of needs being a part of that group,
- 24:01Speaker 11: in the receiver corps, but also on the special teams
- 24:03Speaker 11: side of things, which.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Is a desk need right now in Denver, Marvin Memsy,
- 24:07Speaker 1: guy that has led Oklahoma and receiving in three consecutive seasons.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Thank you James Palmer there with the latest on the Broncos.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Let's get almost all the AMC West in this conversation.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Let's get to the Chargers now. Justin Herbert entering year
- 24:20Speaker 1: number four, it is time to give him a new contract.
- 24:24Speaker 1: The Chargers know that, and they also know that Labar
- 24:27Speaker 1: Jackson and Jalen Hurts just got new deals as well.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Here's Tom Plesco yesterday on Serious XM.
- 24:35Speaker 8: I wouldn't say there's any quarterback contract out there that's
- 24:37Speaker 8: a blueprint. I wouldn't say that at all. But like
- 24:40Speaker 8: anything else, and Bill knows this, like, there'll be contracts
- 24:44Speaker 8: that are talked about and you know, will cherry pick
- 24:46Speaker 8: some things out of that contract. We like, the agent
- 24:48Speaker 8: will cherry pick some things out of that contract that
- 24:50Speaker 8: he likes. But in the end we'll get to a
- 24:52Speaker 8: compromise at some point of something that works for everybody.
- 24:57Speaker 8: And that's what we'll do here. I don't know when
- 25:00Speaker 8: it will get done. I don't really have a time
- 25:01Speaker 8: frame for it, to be honest with you, but we'll
- 25:04Speaker 8: get there.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Tom Telesco also knows how they're omar ruiz that you
- 25:08Speaker 1: have to put some weapons around justin Herbert. They were
- 25:10Speaker 1: doing there in Kansas City as well around Patrick Mahomes.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Quentin Johnston is their first first round wide receiver since
- 25:18Speaker 1: Mike Williams, who.
- 25:19Speaker 12: Is now in the room with him, and talk about explosiveness,
- 25:22Speaker 12: that's a key word that the Chargers have been talking
- 25:24Speaker 12: about in retooling this offense with Kellen Moore as a
- 25:28Speaker 12: new offensive coordinator. They were tied for twenty seventh in
- 25:31Speaker 12: the league last year in big plays. They feel Quinton
- 25:33Speaker 12: Johnson is a big part of that. Obviously can stretch
- 25:36Speaker 12: the field with his size, speed and catch radius, but
- 25:39Speaker 12: also gives the versatility with his catch and run ability
- 25:43Speaker 12: and also that fiz fly sweep. And we mentioned being
- 25:45Speaker 12: in the same room with Mike Williams and Keenan Allen
- 25:48Speaker 12: learning from them. He also had one of the great
- 25:51Speaker 12: moments of draft weekend. Check out what he did on
- 25:54Speaker 12: Thursday night.
- 25:59Speaker 2: You can get prepared for him moment.
- 26:00Speaker 4: So much of action life, Holley like you've never been there,
- 26:04Speaker 4: and then once.
- 26:04Speaker 2: You're completely different feeling. I wasn't expecting to have the emotion.
- 26:09Speaker 1: That I had. I just want to get mixed. OU
- 26:12Speaker 1: out to my mom.
- 26:12Speaker 11: So when you playing on two weeks and the nice.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Another day.
- 26:25Speaker 12: Shout out NFL Films for capturing that one of the
- 26:28Speaker 12: incredible moments that we saw over the weekend.
- 26:31Speaker 1: So Quentin Johnson, Mom, you don't have to work anymore.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Come on, move to Los Angeles.
- 26:36Speaker 2: You'll love it here.
- 26:36Speaker 1: The weather's nice, except this year, speaking of weather like Seattle,
- 26:40Speaker 1: the weather sometimes nice. Let's get back to the Seahawks.
- 26:43Speaker 1: We spoke before about Devin Witherspoon. They drafted a wide
- 26:46Speaker 1: receiver in JSN. Obviously at twenty they were searching really
- 26:50Speaker 1: all last year for that number three guy behind DK
- 26:53Speaker 1: Metcalf and.
- 26:54Speaker 12: Tyler Law and they feel like they haven't now. Jackson
- 26:56Speaker 12: Smith in Jigma, somebody that John Schneider said was a
- 26:58Speaker 12: complicated evaluation because he hurt his hamstring in the seventh
- 27:03Speaker 12: play of the season and obviously try to fight through
- 27:05Speaker 12: it a couple weeks later, but couldn't really have ended
- 27:08Speaker 12: his season early. Had he had a season in twenty
- 27:11Speaker 12: twenty two like he did in twenty twenty one, probably
- 27:14Speaker 12: wouldn't have been there at number twenty for the Seattle
- 27:17Speaker 12: Seahawks to add to the mix in DK Metcalf and
- 27:20Speaker 12: Tyler Lockett, two players that certainly Jackson Smith in JIGMA
- 27:23Speaker 12: could learn from behind. But when you look at his
- 27:25Speaker 12: twenty twenty one tablet the Seahawks did, especially that Utah
- 27:29Speaker 12: game in the Rose Bowl, won the all time great
- 27:31Speaker 12: performances fifteen catches, three hundred and forty seven yards, three touchdowns,
- 27:36Speaker 12: And when they're evaluating that, they're looking on the field,
- 27:39Speaker 12: he's sharing the wide receiving room with Garrett Wilson and
- 27:43Speaker 12: Chris o'lavey, guys that came in right away and made
- 27:45Speaker 12: a huge impact in the NFL. Obviously Garrett Wilson the
- 27:48Speaker 12: offensive Rookie of the Year, and for JSN to pop
- 27:51Speaker 12: like that the way he did with those players that
- 27:54Speaker 12: somebody that Gino Smith they feel will love right away.
- 27:57Speaker 12: Now the compete mentality there in Seattle, he's going to
- 28:00Speaker 12: have to earn everything. But something that they were impressed
- 28:03Speaker 12: with is his size in his lower box is able
- 28:06Speaker 12: to contort and the physical strength that it provides there
- 28:10Speaker 12: with his body, something that when they saw him in
- 28:12Speaker 12: person at that pro day at Ohio State really jumped
- 28:15Speaker 12: out to them much more so than it did on
- 28:17Speaker 12: his tape.
- 28:17Speaker 1: All Right, the draft, a couple of running backs and
- 28:19Speaker 1: consecutive years, and now at a wide receiver to the
- 28:21Speaker 1: mix there as well. For Gino Smith, Thank you allmar
- 28:24Speaker 1: Ruiz the latest on the Seahawks. That's the key here
- 28:26Speaker 1: for these gms. You build around the quarterbacks, whether it's
- 28:29Speaker 1: building around Gino Smith that's what John Schneider did, or
- 28:33Speaker 1: building around Kendy Pickett or Jordan Love. Which of these
- 28:38Speaker 1: quarterbacks though, is in the best position now after seeing
- 28:41Speaker 1: what their gms did. That's the path to the draft
- 28:44Speaker 1: hit today, Rhett.
- 28:47Speaker 13: Hi, what's up, friends, Welcome back inside the Path to
- 28:49Speaker 13: the Draft studio here, Rett Lewis, Bucky Brooks and Daniel
- 28:52Speaker 13: Jeremiah back here with you with the draft in the
- 28:55Speaker 13: rear view, looking at some quarterbacks that got some help,
- 28:58Speaker 13: because after all, it's about supporting your quarterback or trying
- 29:02Speaker 13: to get after the opposing quarterback in this game.
- 29:04Speaker 1: But let's talk about the guy got some help. Buck,
- 29:07Speaker 1: you want to leave us off when you got here
- 29:08Speaker 1: for us?
- 29:08Speaker 2: How about Jordan Love.
- 29:09Speaker 14: Jordan Love is tasked with the responsibility of replacing Aaron Rodgers.
- 29:12Speaker 14: So the Green Bay Packs decided to help him out.
- 29:15Speaker 14: Added too tight ends in the draft to try and
- 29:17Speaker 14: make the game easier for him. Luke Muskraft took a
- 29:20Speaker 14: craft come over. They give them presents over the middlefield.
- 29:23Speaker 14: Then you go back and you think about what he
- 29:24Speaker 14: had last year, ring your dubs, Christian Watson. They now
- 29:28Speaker 14: had a full, complete wide receiver court. They should allow
- 29:31Speaker 14: him to play at his best. A lot of expectations
- 29:34Speaker 14: for him, and so what they did is tried to
- 29:36Speaker 14: make the game easy.
- 29:36Speaker 15: You've got putting two big guys over the millonfield. Yeah,
- 29:39Speaker 15: I'm going to go to Pittsburgh and Kenny Pickett. You know,
- 29:42Speaker 15: I think about Kenny Pickett. He needed some help and
- 29:44Speaker 15: it was an easy trip. They just went down to Athens,
- 29:46Speaker 15: they went down to Georgia, just grabbed picked up a
- 29:48Speaker 15: couple of pieces, and we're.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Gonna bring him back.
- 29:50Speaker 15: We're gonna plug him into the Steelers' offense. Think about
- 29:52Speaker 15: Roderick Jones, their first round pick, the left tackle. When
- 29:55Speaker 15: you watched them run the rock at Georgia last year,
- 29:57Speaker 15: and you watched them get after people. It was usually
- 29:59Speaker 15: on that left side with Broderick Jones, and then next
- 30:02Speaker 15: to him was the big tight end and Darnell Washington
- 30:04Speaker 15: new you hear catch the ball in the middle of
- 30:06Speaker 15: the field. So those guys are going to help the
- 30:08Speaker 15: run game with Naja Harris, which is going to put
- 30:10Speaker 15: Kenny Pickett in a lot more favorable down in distance.
- 30:13Speaker 15: That's gonna make his life a lot easier. Let's get
- 30:16Speaker 15: him out of third and eight, nine, ten plus. I
- 30:18Speaker 15: think Kenny Pickett takes a big step forward. And one
- 30:21Speaker 15: of the other reasons why is because he's going to
- 30:23Speaker 15: be thrown to a second year wide out from Guessware
- 30:25Speaker 15: from Georgia.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Yeah, George, take the Georgia Bulldogs.
- 30:28Speaker 15: All this talk about Eagles.
- 30:30Speaker 1: It's the state.
- 30:31Speaker 13: It's the state of Pennsylvania that apparently is a big
- 30:34Speaker 13: fan of the two time back to back national champion
- 30:37Speaker 13: Georgia Bulldogs and man one two punch of tight end
- 30:40Speaker 13: is kind of intriguing now in Pittsburgh too with Pat
- 30:42Speaker 13: Fryarmouth and now Darnell Washington, and then you talk about
- 30:45Speaker 13: the Packers getting a pair of tight ends. This draft
- 30:49Speaker 13: interesting how they try to help their young quarterbacks in
- 30:52Speaker 13: that position group. A lot more on the way, one
- 30:56Speaker 13: more time here on Path to the Draft tonight at
- 30:59Speaker 13: sixth Eastern, right here on an NFL network.
- 31:01Speaker 1: It is the path to the Draft season finale.
- 31:04Speaker 13: We have I jinks, we have recaps, We've got everything
