Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / David Kaplan talks Bears & the end of the Cubs season, the Chicken Coop Contest and final thoughts from Iowa basketball media day
Transcript
- 0:11Hour number two, welcome back Miller and Condon.
- 0:13It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network flagship on Des Moines
- 0:16sports station. One O 6.3 KX and O.
- 0:19We'll get back to Iowa City. The bottom of the hour, More
- 0:21from men's basketball media days with Trent coming up at about
- 0:251:30. Right now, David Kaplan joins
- 0:27me. Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors
- 0:29CAPI on a weekly basis. Capri, Ken, how are you?
- 0:33I am awesome. How are you guys doing today?
- 0:36How's things in your world? Well.
- 0:38Doing pretty well, doing pretty well.
- 0:40A lot of ground to cover with you.
- 0:41Obviously the Bears nice win on Monday Night Cup season comes to
- 0:45an end. Now the post season or the off
- 0:47season begins. But let's start with the Bears
- 0:49capper and then we'll get to the Cubs 'cause I do have a bunch of
- 0:52questions. I know that the audience wants
- 0:54me to ask you, so we'll do that. But what a difference a year
- 0:57makes. The score was the same, just the
- 0:59other team won. The Bears knocked off the
- 1:02Commanders 25, 24 this year. That was a big win for this
- 1:05team, cap. It really does.
- 1:07We got think back. Obviously it seemed like a
- 1:09season defining loss last year and the season went the wrong
- 1:12way. We'll see if this propels the
- 1:15Bears. Their schedule's certainly
- 1:17conducive to putting some wins together.
- 1:19Your thoughts on what you saw on Monday night?
- 1:22I mean, it's a huge win. We talked last week, you and me
- 1:26and Trent, you and I, I think we're in agreement that it
- 1:32wasn't a must win. But if you could find a way to
- 1:36get on the plane and go home, three and two.
- 1:39Now you're cooking with gas. Three in a row, you're coming
- 1:42home to play a team again. You can lose to any team in the
- 1:45league. I get it.
- 1:46You should beat the New Orleans Saints that sold your field
- 1:49Sunday at noon. You should should.
- 1:52And if you do and you get the four and two, oh, man, look out
- 1:57because are the Ravens going to have Lamar Jackson back?
- 2:00I think they might. But they're not playing good
- 2:02football. Their defense is not playing
- 2:04well. You're playing them there.
- 2:07Then you play a Bengals team that's now down to Joe Flacco.
- 2:11That's a winnable football game. And then you come home and play
- 2:14the New York Giants, who have talent, just beat the Eagles.
- 2:18But again, that's in your building.
- 2:20So there are some real opportunities for the Chicago
- 2:24Bears to get on a little bit of a role and I'll, I'm not sure
- 2:30they're going to beat the Lions. But short of the Lions, I look
- 2:33at their schedule and go, they can win most any game on their
- 2:37schedule. Can they get to 10 wins?
- 2:39That's what you're probably going to need to get to the
- 2:42playoffs. I think they can.
- 2:44I thought it was DeAndre Swift's.
- 2:45I'm sure he's had other games cap, You know, he's been in the
- 2:48league for five years now, but it's been his best game in a
- 2:51while. I think that's fair to say.
- 2:52What was the difference? Swift ran hard.
- 2:55Holes were there for him. He had a big game on Monday
- 2:58night. He was great, but the gaps that
- 3:02were created by that revamped offensive line, you got Darnell
- 3:06right back and despite other you told he has a torn ulnar
- 3:10collateral ligament and he's going to try and play through it
- 3:13the whole rest of the way as long as they go and then get it
- 3:16fixed. He was a baseball player.
- 3:18He'd be done. That's Tommy John surgery, but
- 3:21as an offensive lineman, they braced it and I'm sure dead in
- 3:25the pain and that dude was outstanding.
- 3:28Jonah Jackson after moving from left guard to right guard, which
- 3:32is not an easy thing to do. I keep getting tweets and texts
- 3:37from people who know me. Why is it so different to go
- 3:40from left to right? Because your footwork, your lead
- 3:42arm, everything is different. And Olin Cruz said that is not
- 3:47an easy thing to do. He is playing really good
- 3:50football, was excellent on Monday.
- 3:53Joe Tooney is 2 time all pro the last two years, first team.
- 3:56He's really good with the Chiefs MVP.
- 3:59Drew Dahlman had a really good day, and then Theo Benedette now
- 4:02plugged in at left tackle. That team created running lanes
- 4:06and DeAndre Swift executed him. He's great, you know, he really
- 4:10did. Your thoughts on the QB?
- 4:12Is he continuing to take steps forward?
- 4:15100% I know there's some people that thought Caleb wasn't great.
- 4:21I didn't think Caleb was an A+ player, but I thought Caleb
- 4:25played a solid football game. B minus, I thought he was solid.
- 4:29He didn't turn it over. The other guy threw an
- 4:32interception and fumble it late in the game when they're trying
- 4:36to put it away. Talking about Jayden Daniels,
- 4:38who's a very good football player.
- 4:40Caleb got the ball in his hands with a chance to go down and win
- 4:44the game. And guess what?
- 4:45They got down the field and they found a way to win.
- 4:48They ran it well. He hit close to Loveland for a
- 4:50big first down and in the end they got the field goal and won
- 4:54the football game. So I like where this team is
- 4:59trending. I saw Chase, Daniels said.
- 5:01That was the most calm and cool he has watched Caleb Williams
- 5:07play. Did he miss a few throws?
- 5:09Yeah, did I did. I think he missed a few throws.
- 5:12Yeah. He had a couple slants where
- 5:14either he threw at 100 miles an hour or he wasn't on the same
- 5:18page with his receiver or Mikey Sandra still should have
- 5:21intercepted one down in the red zone and he didn't.
- 5:24He dropped it and he threw it right to him, right in the
- 5:27chest, but he also threw for 252 yards, threw a touchdown, ran a
- 5:32touchdown. And if Olimitis Zacchaeus
- 5:37doesn't drop a dive right in his hands late in the game, that's
- 5:42the 88 out of the gate, That's a 90 yard touchdown.
- 5:45He's gone and he dropped it. That happens.
- 5:48That's part of the game. So yeah, I'm pretty happy with
- 5:51where they're at to find a way to win and get on that plane.
- 5:55Three and two was massive. Now I can tell you all in Fruit
- 5:59said to me last night your plus 10 the last three games in
- 6:03turnover margin or take away margin and you're only winning
- 6:06by one point each of the last two games.
- 6:09That's a fair critique that could be cause for concern.
- 6:14You know what that tells me? Quit making 9 penalties and
- 6:17let's see where you. Go well and one of the wasn't a
- 6:19penalty and it Costa dunsey A touchdown.
- 6:21Terrific pass, better catch in the end.
- 6:24The horrible. Well, yeah, it wasn't a Colonel
- 6:26and and Aikman pointed out. All right, one more on the Bears
- 6:29cap. As far as what they're going to
- 6:30do Cairo Santos missed the game. Here comes former third round
- 6:34pick Jake Moody and worn out, worn out as welcome in San
- 6:37Francisco as confidence was shot.
- 6:40Yes, he had the block kick, but I think he's got a much stronger
- 6:43leg than Santos does. Do they have a decision to make
- 6:46here? Does Santos automatically get
- 6:48his job back? Is it a true competition at the
- 6:51kicker spot? Because as as Cruz pointed out,
- 6:54these are close football games and it's going to come down a
- 6:56lot of times to a kick or not. What do they do?
- 7:01I think if if Cutleros healthy, I still think he kicks.
- 7:05You know, Jake Moody has not been the most guy.
- 7:08Cairo, while he may not have quite as big a leg as Jake
- 7:12Moody, is the most accurate kicker in Bears history.
- 7:15And they've had some really good kickers from Kevin Butler to Bob
- 7:18Thomas to Mac Percival to Robbie Gold, my God, who I love.
- 7:24So I I would think they'll stick with Cairo if if he's healthy.
- 7:30Kevin Butler, There's a name from the past.
- 7:32He had a nice career in Chicago, didn't he?
- 7:35Oh, great career it was a rookie on the 85 team.
- 7:38Dropped that out of Georgia and he was phenomenal.
- 7:41Yeah, there's a name I hadn't heard in a while.
- 7:43Well, let's go to the baseball cap and obviously it comes to an
- 7:46end on Saturday night. They got the two games at
- 7:49Wrigley. You, you've been to 1,000,000
- 7:51games at Wrigley, big games at Wrigley.
- 7:54I've been to a lot of games at Wrigley.
- 7:55Never the magnitude of the games that you've seen boys seem loud
- 7:58cap. It just seemed like Wrigley was
- 8:00in full throat and at its very best.
- 8:03Would that be a fair assumption watching on TV?
- 8:06Yeah, my wife was there. I bought her Bleacher seats for
- 8:10Wednesday and Thursday and her sister flew in from San Diego.
- 8:15Who's a die hard Cubs fan. I think my sister-in-law,
- 8:18Veronica, last year saw 45 home games.
- 8:21She was still living here. Yeah, 45.
- 8:24And she would go back. She lived two blocks away and
- 8:26she would literally walk her dog, my ticket, drop the dog off
- 8:32and walk back and sit in the bleachers by herself more often
- 8:36than not because she just loves the Chicago Cubs.
- 8:39So she called and said, you got a bed for me there.
- 8:42I said my house is your house. And she came in and my her and
- 8:45my wife Wednesday and Thursday sat in the right field Bleacher
- 8:49and my wife. I've taken my wife to the World
- 8:51Series. And my wife said other than the
- 8:55game, we clinched the Pennant when we beat the Dodgers in 16
- 9:00behind Kyle Hendricks over Kershaw and the game five First
- 9:04World Series win in 71 years at Wrigley.
- 9:07Other than those two, she said it was the most electric
- 9:10environment she's ever seen for a Chicago sporting event.
- 9:14That's wild and she's seen a bunch of them Kappa you you
- 9:17mentioned Kyle Hendricks. I don't think it's an official
- 9:19yet If it if he did retire. I missed the official
- 9:22announcement. Seems like he's going to what's
- 9:24next for him to the Cubs having AI don't know what's an
- 9:28ambassador. He's made a lot of money.
- 9:29I don't know what he wants to to do, but boy, oh boy, such a such
- 9:33seemingly a great teammate. Obviously what he said at a
- 9:36press conference before they played the Cubs, just how
- 9:38special Wrigley Field was and how he loved it.
- 9:41Is there a spot for Kyle Hendricks in the organization?
- 9:45Yeah, I think he wants some time to be at home with his wife,
- 9:49Emma. And they have a young child, I
- 9:51think maybe one year old. I think he wants to be a dad and
- 9:54be a husband and all of that. But I do think he wants
- 9:58something to do, and I think he wants it to be with the Chicago
- 10:01Cubs. So what I'm hearing is he'll end
- 10:03up being an ambassador. They'll pay him whatever they
- 10:07pay an ambassador. Not what you made as a Major
- 10:10League player, but I would think that him Anthony Rizzo, because
- 10:16the Cubs ambassadors not very young gone, Santos gone.
- 10:23Billy's in his 80s and Fergie's in his 80s and Rhino's gone, so
- 10:30you have opportunities for younger players.
- 10:34I think you'll see a lot of Rizzo and Hendricks around the
- 10:38organization. Jed Hoyer met the media his end
- 10:41of season press conference today.
- 10:42I did not hear it. I'm just seeing snippets on
- 10:44Twitter. The Kyle Tucker question.
- 10:47Obviously it's going to come up. He didn't sound like he was, you
- 10:51know, go out of his going to go out of his way to stay Tucker.
- 10:53I'm just I'm talking about when he was asked after the game.
- 10:56I get it. Players aren't going to, you
- 10:58know, put their cards out on the table.
- 11:00Do you think that he's seen the last of right field at Wrigley
- 11:04Field, at least while wearing a Cubs uniform?
- 11:07Oh boy. I always believed that they were
- 11:11going to find a way to get Kyle Tucker resigned because someone
- 11:15who was in the room the day after they made the trade for
- 11:19him told me that Tom Ricketts stood up in that room in a
- 11:22meeting and said, OK, what's our plan?
- 11:25How do we get this guy re signed?
- 11:27And they were, Tom was told, look, he doesn't want to do
- 11:31anything right now. He wants to see if he likes
- 11:34Chicago. Does his wife like it in
- 11:36Chicago? And he's worked his whole life
- 11:39to test free agency. You never know what happened.
- 11:43You know, I don't think Juan Soto thought that Steve Cohen
- 11:46was going to ride in to give him $765,000,000 and have a bidding
- 11:50war with the Yankees. I don't think he believed that.
- 11:53He knew he was going to make insane money either way.
- 11:57But you never know what happened.
- 11:58What if there's an owner says, I got to have Kyle Tucker, here's
- 12:02500 million, he's gone. I can promise you that the Cubs
- 12:05will never do that for him. Now, we also have a work
- 12:09stoppage coming in the end of the 26th season.
- 12:13And it could be a messy 1 and it could be a lengthy one because
- 12:16the owners want a salary cap and the players say they're dug in.
- 12:20They'll never agree to one. Well, the owners can hold on a
- 12:25lot longer because if you're a player, let's say you're 32
- 12:28years old, you're going to miss two of the highest earning years
- 12:32of your career if they shut the sport down.
- 12:35I don't think you can because your body gets older.
- 12:39You're going to come back and go, oh God, I left two years of
- 12:43money on the table. It's easy for an 18 year old
- 12:45minor leaguer, though. All right, let me know when
- 12:47we're going to get back to playing.
- 12:49So we'll see what happens. But I do think the labor will
- 12:55play into not only Kyle Tucker, everyone's market in the
- 12:59offseason. One of those guys in the market
- 13:01was a potentially a Cubs target and they didn't want to go term.
- 13:05And that's Alex Bregman, who now has opted out in in Boston.
- 13:09Obviously he was going to come over and play third base.
- 13:11They seemingly have solved that. Matt Shaw was nominated.
- 13:15I think there was 6 Cubs on the list that we got nominated for a
- 13:17Gold Glove. Is Bregman still on their wish
- 13:21list? Or was what Matt Shaw?
- 13:22Did he open up enough eyes that maybe there could not contend
- 13:26more than contend just to let Matt Shaw man the hot quarter
- 13:29for the hot corner for the foreseeable future?
- 13:33Matt Shaw is going nowhere. There's no way that they are
- 13:37going to bring in. I'd be shocked if they went
- 13:40signed Alex Bregman to a long term big money deal.
- 13:44I don't see it. Jed Hoyer at his media session
- 13:47today talked about how clean their books are.
- 13:51They literally like, I'm sitting at my studio computer right now
- 13:56while I'm talking to you. I'll look it up.
- 13:59But the Cubs payroll going forward, if you look at what
- 14:03they have commitments for after this year, I don't believe that
- 14:10they have a ton of money committed because they have, as
- 14:14he said, clean books 2026. They do not have a lot on the
- 14:20books, man, Dansby Swanson, OK, he's locked in show to Imanaga.
- 14:25I don't know if he's coming back.
- 14:26They're going to have to either extend him and pick up a $20
- 14:29million option or he walks out the door, say as Suzuki final
- 14:33year of his deal, Ian Hap, final year of his deal, Jameson Tayon,
- 14:38final year of his deal, Matthew Boyd, final year of his deal,
- 14:41Nico Horner final year of his deal.
- 14:45Those guys are all going to be out of here.
- 14:48So if you look at 2027, which is the season that we might be in
- 14:53real trouble, here's what their active roster payroll is for
- 14:572027. Dansby Swanson and then three
- 15:02guys who are on options Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, Carson Kelly,
- 15:07That's it. Everyone else is either they
- 15:12control through arbitration or they are free agents.
- 15:16That is, on one hand, incredibly intelligent by Jed.
- 15:22I know the Ricketts family will take their slings and arrows.
- 15:25Well, how can you not spend more money?
- 15:27Well, if you're going into a labor stop at you, you don't
- 15:29know the new rules coming out. That's probably really
- 15:32intelligent. However, what if you don't get
- 15:38enough opportunity to get guys signed?
- 15:40They go other places. You don't have anything, just
- 15:43young guys and Gansby Swanson. That's it.
- 15:47So we'll see. Cap, correct me if I'm wrong,
- 15:50but I thought every pitcher that pitched in the final game, the
- 15:53three one loss in Milwaukee on Saturday night with the
- 15:56exception of Palencia. So that would be Pomerance,
- 15:59Colin Ray, Thielbar, Kittridge and Keller.
- 16:02The only one of those six pitchers that pitched that will
- 16:06be back for sure is Palencia. With options and free agency.
- 16:10Pomerance, Ray, Theobar, Kittridge and Keller could all
- 16:13be gone. Of that group, who would you
- 16:15like? Who would you recommend comes
- 16:17back? So who would I bring back out of
- 16:20my bullpen? Yep.
- 16:24Well, Brad Keller I would absolutely bring back, but
- 16:27you're not getting him on a minor league.
- 16:28No for 1.5. Pomeranz is not consigning here
- 16:33for a one year deal for 1.5. Caleb Theobar is not signing for
- 16:382.75, Colin Ray is probably going to get more than 4.25.
- 16:45And I admit I can keep. Going Kittridge.
- 16:47There's a bunch of it. Kittridge made 9 million this
- 16:50year, but you got him August, it's the first, so you didn't
- 16:55really have to. You only paid him 2.8.
- 16:58That was it. So my point is you better add a
- 17:03lot of money to your bullpen and figure out how you're going to
- 17:07get got and are those guys going to all perform at that level.
- 17:12Drew Pomerance was out of Major League Baseball since 2021 and
- 17:16Jed plucked him out of the minor leagues in Seattle.
- 17:19Think Seattle wouldn't like to have that left-handed arm now?
- 17:22Absolutely they would. So he's going into his 12th year
- 17:27in the big leagues. Javier Assad, you own the rights
- 17:30to you'll keep him. He only makes $790,000.
- 17:34You're going to extend Michael Bush, Jed said.
- 17:36Today. We're going to have extension
- 17:38talks with certain guys. Well, that's got to be Pete Core
- 17:41Armstrong. That's got to be Michael Bush.
- 17:43Nico Horner, make it 780,000. Nico Horner has right now he is
- 17:49making $11.5 million and his contract expires after next
- 17:56year. So I would think you're going to
- 17:58want to extend him. But do you do that before you
- 18:01know what the rules of the new collective bargaining could be?
- 18:04I don't know if you do. So we'll find out.
- 18:07Last thing for you, Cap, let's go over the Gold Glovers
- 18:10finalists. Carson Kelly was one of three,
- 18:13Bailey and Torrance the others. Nico Horner at second base.
- 18:18Yeah, Terang's a nice player, but I think it'd be robbery if
- 18:21Horner doesn't win it. Matt Shaw at third base Ryan
- 18:25Hayes is a is a wizard with the with the Pirates slash now Reds
- 18:30Ian Haps got one PCA has to get one and my and Matthew Boyd in
- 18:34the pitcher spot. How many and Dansby Swanson by
- 18:37the way, was not nominated first time in I think five years.
- 18:40How many Gold Gloves end up with the Cubs players after when
- 18:44they're when they're awarded 2/3?
- 18:46I will say Nico. Yep, Matthew Boyd, Keith Car
- 18:52Armstrong and Ian Hap. They win 4.
- 18:55Wow, I could see it. Good stuff, Kappa.
- 18:57You're the best, brother. Appreciate you coming on.
- 18:59Talking bears, talking Cubs. Obviously, there'll be a lot of
- 19:02Cubs talk during the offseason. Great talking to you, Kappa.
- 19:06Thank you, Paul. Appreciate.
- 19:07It too man anytime love talking to you.
- 19:09See you pal. Good to talk to you, David
- 19:11Kaplan as he joins us talking Chicago sports and he does each
- 19:15and every Wednesday at 1:00 each and every Wednesday at 1:00.
- 19:21All right, we will take the time.
- 19:23Are we going to owe you a a keyword?
- 19:26We'll get to that in just a second.
- 19:29Trent's going to rejoin. We'll do some Panther back and
- 19:33forth up McCullum in the scheduling conversation was
- 19:36fascinating with McCullum and yes, he hears it from Drake
- 19:39fans, from Panther fans and from fans just I mean, I would love
- 19:44to see these schools continue to play, but it doesn't make sense,
- 19:47unfortunately. And that's not Mccollum's fault.
- 19:50That's not T JS fault. That's not anybody's fault at
- 19:53that level, power for our power conference level.
- 19:57It's just the way that the net is is configured.
- 20:00It doesn't make sense to play. Those schools and it's it's just
- 20:04a product where we're at and the money that's that's tossed
- 20:07around anyways, we'll take your time out.
- 20:08We'll owe you a keyword potentially we'll get Trent back
- 20:12on the other side, kind of recap what he's been doing.
- 20:15We're going to take you until 2:00.
- 20:17Then off the bench come Lucas and Sean, 2 until 5.
- 20:21Don't forget if you are out and about the Urbandale Hy Vee,
- 20:26they're massive Spooktacular liquor sales coming up this
- 20:30Friday at the Urbandale Hyvee. Only at the Urbandale Hyvee, the
- 20:35sale goes on. It's a yearly event.
- 20:37Everybody looks forward to it. I was there for the first time
- 20:40last year. I was blown away just how many
- 20:42people. I mean, I think restaurants, I
- 20:43think bars are there stocking up and and getting their, getting
- 20:47their supplies. It is a massive event.
- 20:50And both of the afternoon show, Miller and Condon and Off the

- 21:04less than 48 hours away. Miller and Condon keyword time
- 21:08Before we go to break, let's do it.
- 21:10Head to kxno.com, the keyword in this nationwide contest.

- 22:10The runner up will get 20 wings Chicken coop giveaway first four
- 22:13callers. 515-284-5966 Before we get to that, let's get TC back
- 22:19in here. George, your piece with McCollum
- 22:22and I, as you said to him, you could talk scheduling, meeting
- 22:25with him for an hour. I would listen to that Trent
- 22:28that I was very informative. I love the fact that he, I mean,
- 22:31he certainly understood the and I'm sure he's heard it, the
- 22:35criticism, the blowback, the pushback from Drake fans, from
- 22:39you and I fans, don't forget where you came from type of
- 22:42thing. I get all of those things.
- 22:44But at the end of the day, his reason for doing so?
- 22:48Unfortunately, it's the lay of the land, right?
- 22:52Yeah, absolutely. And you know, that's, I
- 22:55understand the frustrations on both sides personally.
- 22:58Yeah, I would love to have those games come back.
- 23:01There was something special and it didn't matter if it doesn't
- 23:03happen in other states or other programs across the country.
- 23:06It's what made Iowa special in non conference scheduling is
- 23:09having those home in homes. I would love them to come back.
- 23:12But I also know the reality is they're not coming back and
- 23:14there is a reason for it. It's not ducking.
- 23:17It's about the way that schedules are currently set up
- 23:19with the explosion of conferences with the bigger
- 23:21schedules that go in to it, coupled with the net ranking in
- 23:25the way that it makes sense to play the game.
- 23:27Certainly numbers wise, you understand why it's not there.
- 23:30And it doesn't make sense for Iowa or Iowa State to go on the
- 23:34road every single year for one of the two to go to either you
- 23:37and I or Drake and then vice versa the following season.
- 23:39It just doesn't make sense for them.
- 23:41It stinks for us as fans and and for fans of basketball in the
- 23:44state, but I understand it from both sides, from both the Iowa
- 23:47and the Iowa State side. Yeah, I couldn't agree with you
- 23:50more and I didn't before, but it's it's you're you're 100%
- 23:53right. Hey, I think it's, I think it
- 23:55was you and I forgot to bring this up yesterday because I saw
- 23:57it before our show on yesterday. I think on Monday.
- 24:00You mentioned Chase so well in the helmet as he was leaving the
- 24:04as he was leaving Folsom Field and I looked at you like what
- 24:06the hell are you talking about? I had not seen it.
- 24:09The fan that tried to well, as he's walked, let me set the
- 24:13scene a little bit. There's fans rushed in the
- 24:14field. Colorado just knocked off Iowa
- 24:17State and by the I'm guessing it was a student, a student tried
- 24:21to get in a essentially a tug of war with so well trying to steal
- 24:26his helmet and then run into the throngs of people.
- 24:29And if he would have got to his, you know, the, his fellow
- 24:31students that that would have been in a dorm room as a trophy
- 24:35at this point. But how about the way so well,
- 24:37who handled it right? He didn't go crazy.
- 24:40He didn't fight. He didn't get let go of his
- 24:42helmet. But I think he used to be
- 24:43commended for the, you know, 'cause it's, I mean, his hair's
- 24:47on fire, right? It's all of this pandemonium
- 24:50happening around him and he still had the wherewithal to
- 24:53kind of try and calm the waters and do what he did.
- 24:56I thought that was phenomenal on his part.
- 24:59Absolutely. And I'm going to guess there's
- 25:02already been a fine that has been levied by the Big 12.
- 25:05There's already been one that has happened with the Big 12.
- 25:08And you have to anticipate that there's going to be even more
- 25:10that's going to be happening here.
- 25:11I mean, you can't have fans doing that.
- 25:14There's a reason that we have things in place and for you see
- 25:18the SEC and now the ACC for storming the field or storming
- 25:21the court and it's incidents like this.
- 25:23You have to have parameters in place to keep the the players
- 25:26safe and the visiting players, and this certainly was not the
- 25:29case. It's there, I think so.
- 25:31Well, absolutely. As frustrated as it had to be.
- 25:35That's your helmet. You're not going to give up.
- 25:36I mean, it's just, it's a part of it's Ken.
- 25:38It's like you and your hockey stick, right?
- 25:40Yes, trends your 1000% right. Here's the other thing and we'll
- 25:43get to Joe Russ, Herb and Tyler would give the chicken coop here
- 25:46in about 10 seconds. But here's what could have
- 25:48happened Trent, if so well, so well decided.
- 25:51You know, I'm just going to clock this dude, which he had
- 25:53every right to do. Yep, you don't damn well that
- 25:56there was going to be a camera and some student would have a
- 25:58cut the video and it would just been this Sobi was state fans or
- 26:02loser who would have punched a student and we wouldn't have
- 26:06known the entire story what was behind it.
- 26:09Well done, Chase, so well and that was in in a difficult spot
- 26:13thinking on your feet. All right, Joe, Russ, Herb and
- 26:16Tyler, all of you the tiebreaker.
- 26:18How about this a basketball tiebreaker.
- 26:20The the exhibition game over in Omaha, Creighton and Iowa State
- 26:24will be total points closest without going over.
- 26:27There are three chicken coop locations, 60th and Ashworth in
- 26:31West Des Moines. That's the original in Urbandale
- 26:3412725 Meredith and in Ankeny on oral labor just South of the D
- 26:40Mac campus. Let's go to Joe.

- 29:23Tyler one, 53153. Tyler, enjoy the rest of your
- 29:27week. Thank you, buddy.
- 29:29Yep, appreciate it and appreciate the chicken coop
- 29:31again. Three locations throughout
- 29:33central Iowa, Urbandale, Ankeny and West Des Moines.
- 29:36We'll take our final time out. We'll head back down to Iowa
- 29:38City. Final thoughts from Trent on
- 29:40what he witnessed here earlier today.
- 29:43We'll do that. We'll get his plays of the day.
- 29:46Circus sports sponsor those. Only one baseball game tonight,
- 29:49Seattle hosting Toronto. Seattle up to nothing in the
- 29:53American League Championship Series.
- 29:54She's Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 29:56Glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 30:01I'm Miller and Condon. Welcome back 1:45 our final
- 30:03segment here on a Wednesday. Thank you to Centuring Stone of
- 30:07Iowa for sponsoring Cappy. I forgot to mention the good
- 30:10folks over at Centurion Stone. So let me do that right now.

- 30:30check them out. The showroom is located at 5525
- 30:34NE 22nd St. in Des Moines. Boy, there's something about
- 30:38that sound, isn't there? Bouncing balls.
- 30:40And if only you could, if only you could go sit under the net
- 30:43so I can hear a swish the net ball going through the net.
- 30:49You're painting a picture without really doing so.
- 30:51That's awesome. So what are you watching right
- 30:53now? A little scrimmage.
- 30:55Not even that, they're just going through someone on one
- 30:58drills right now. So let's see.
- 31:00We got skirts at the top of the key, takes it in, left hand
- 31:02layup, little scoop shot up and in.
- 31:04He's working against housing there.
- 31:05So now we're going to have to have defensive questions about
- 31:08housing. You know, the one thing that
- 31:10stands out and while you're talking with Kathy, I went down
- 31:13and I had a chance to talk to, I don't know, four or five players
- 31:16for just a couple of minutes each, Every single one of them.
- 31:19You can tell this isn't lip service.
- 31:21I mean, you, you hear Coach McCullum talk, right, about
- 31:24teamwork, those aspects, just those small things that
- 31:28sometimes they're just that coach speak, but they're not
- 31:31real talking to these players. Listening to coach, talking to
- 31:35him off the record, you can just tell it's it's not fake.
- 31:38It's not just saying the things that you're supposed to say as a
- 31:42team. These are the real tenets of
- 31:44things. And that's why I believe so much
- 31:46that this was the correct hire, that this was as perfect of a
- 31:50hire for Iowa basketball that you could make.
- 31:53This is better than getting Darren Devries.
- 31:55This is better than anybody else That was a realistic candidate.
- 31:58This was the perfect fit. Now, that doesn't mean it's
- 32:01going to work perfectly either, as we see with Wisconsin
- 32:03football right now, where I think all of us thought that
- 32:05Pickle was going to be the perfect fit, but I couldn't be.
- 32:10I couldn't buy in anymore. Yes, I'm a Hawkeye fan, but I
- 32:14didn't buy into Todd Licklider Frame McCaffrey I thought was
- 32:17the right guy at the right time, but we know how that ended out.
- 32:20I I think it's more than that. And you don't have, you know,
- 32:22the black and gold DNA that I do can when we've talked about this
- 32:26team, it just, it feels like you couldn't have come up with a
- 32:29better fit than what they have with McCollum.
- 32:32And they got a point guard that's going to lead them.
- 32:34And I I can't wait to have the season I'm playing.
- 32:36I think Trenton, I don't know how much you've got into, you
- 32:39know, looking at conference overall just yet, but I think
- 32:44the Big 10 is deeper this year than it's maybe been the last
- 32:46couple of years. Would you go a lot?
- 32:48Would you go that far? I think so, yeah.
- 32:50I think that's a fair way to look at it.
- 32:52And well, it's a conversation we've been having a bunch.
- 32:55Is there a national championship contender?
- 32:58I I don't see one right now. I even though Purdue's pre
- 33:01season #1 but it's still it's Purdue and yes, they got to the
- 33:06doorstep and they got to the national championship, but that
- 33:08was one time and there's been so many other times where it hasn't
- 33:12been close. Not just losing as a one against
- 33:14the 16, but so many flame outs that they've had in the
- 33:16tournament. I can't get there.
- 33:18I can't see that. And maybe maybe it's my own
- 33:22limitations. I just can't believe that Braden
- 33:24Smith's going to be the best player in college basketball.
- 33:26You know, this 5 foot 10 point guard is going to be the best
- 33:29player. He's proven it the last couple
- 33:31of seasons how good he is. But the depth of this
- 33:34conference, you're absolutely right.
- 33:36You know, there's people that are looking at a team like
- 33:38Nebraska. A lot of people have Nebraska in
- 33:40the tournament. I saw two different previews I
- 33:42was reading over the last two days now, as I'm starting to get
- 33:44into my college basketball work, they've had them 12th and 13th,
- 33:49yet both of those places had them 12th and 13th and still
- 33:52going to Dayton and being in the NCAA tournament.
- 33:55So to your point, yeah, an incredibly deep conference.
- 33:58And that's going to be important too, because we know the
- 34:00difference between going 12:00 and 8:00 and 9:00 and 11:00 is
- 34:05so slim. And that's the difference
- 34:07between maybe being a six seed and having to go to Dayton.
- 34:09It's just a couple of games like that.
- 34:11This is going to sound unfair and, and I think if people have
- 34:15listened over the years, they realize I, I like Fran
- 34:17McCaffrey. I, I did, I like Fran McCaffrey
- 34:19a lot. My guess is that this since he's
- 34:22been hired, Ben McCollum has shaken more hands than Fran
- 34:24McCaffrey maybe did in his entire tenure as the head coach
- 34:28of I of the University of Iowa. Well, remember when Fran got
- 34:32there though, I mean, they came up the get let's get mad again
- 34:35for March Madness to get him back.
- 34:37Yeah. And he did it initially.
- 34:39It was just after 15 years. That was never his personality.
- 34:42I mean, he's a Philly tough guy and it was never his
- 34:44personality. But initially he did do many of
- 34:47those things. So I don't know if that's
- 34:48exactly fair. What I do know though is
- 34:50Mccollum's taking whatever that was and taking it to another
- 34:53line. I mean, he is everywhere.
- 34:55You know, they have their a big get together in the community
- 34:58thing coming up on Friday. I'll be interested to see here
- 35:01in Iowa, the city, you know, what that looks like, what
- 35:03attendance is like compared to last year's.
- 35:05And I see it all the time on my daily podcast.
- 35:07Ken, the numbers for Iowa women's basketball are still
- 35:10there. You know, when Lichco made her
- 35:13commitment, that was one of my biggest podcasts of the month.
- 35:16And the fan base is still there for that.
- 35:19But the men's basketball has dissipated.
- 35:21So how do you build that back? Because we know wrestling is
- 35:24going to sell out every single year.
- 35:25Women's basketball sold out. Again, we're not talking about a
- 35:28huge community here when you're talking about the Iowa City,
- 35:31Cedar Rapids corridor. There's only so many people to
- 35:34go around and want to make that road trip from central Iowa and
- 35:37from Des Moines. You know, during the winter in
- 35:38the middle of the week for 8:00 tip off.
- 35:40How quickly can you build this thing back up and getting not
- 35:43sellouts every single night, but knowing that you're going to
- 35:46have it minimum 1213 thousand in the building every single night.
- 35:49How quickly can you do that in today's environment?
- 35:51And, and the student section right come to life and and show
- 35:55up on a nightly basis. And are they taking steps to do
- 35:58that, Trent? Absolutely.
- 36:01That's what they got talked a little bit about to Bennett
- 36:03about that. And yeah, they're going around,
- 36:05they're they're seeing people in classes, they're driving around
- 36:07in the golf cart and handing out free tickets and doing those
- 36:10little things and, and being part of it, being part of the
- 36:13community, not just we're basketball players that are
- 36:17hired guns, you know, at the university, but really trying to
- 36:19be a part of the community and, and building that back.
- 36:22It's a fractured fan base. And we can argue it should have
- 36:26happened earlier with Fran. Did he get a raw deal?
- 36:28You can make those arguments, I think on both sides.
- 36:30But the reality is the fan base had checked out.
- 36:33And when they check out, what do we always say it?
- 36:36It's not when they're fired up and they're pissed off and
- 36:38they're they're making the phone calls.
- 36:39It's when they don't care. That's when you have problems,
- 36:43and the apathy definitely set into men's basketball these last
- 36:46couple years. No doubt.
- 36:47All right, Circa Sport sponsors Transplays of the day each and
- 36:50every single day. I had the Dodgers last night.
- 36:54What are you going to do tonight?
- 36:56There are a couple of college football games.
- 36:58The only baseball is back to the American League Championship
- 37:01Series, where I'm guessing Seattle's a con over.
- 37:04I don't know, maybe not overwhelming, but they certainly
- 37:06should be favored tonight as it's Kirby against Bieber.
- 37:10Your thoughts? What are you betting on tonight?
- 37:12So I didn't get to a side in the game.
- 37:15I would lean Blue Jays, but I thought I was going to get a
- 37:17little bit better price than is actually out there.
- 37:20Plus 114 right now on the Blue Jays, but not enough.
- 37:23I was hoping for it. Probably about plus 125 would
- 37:27have been a play on for me for the Blue Jays, but obviously
- 37:29didn't get there. I do have two bets and you know
- 37:31what, Mark, and I'm going to right back to the pitching
- 37:33markets that have been pretty good here the last week for me.
- 37:36We'll see if we can continue that.
- 37:38I'm taking Shane Beanber under. I mean, it's a dire situation.
- 37:41This must win, right? And though it didn't happen last
- 37:44night in the Milwaukee game, I'm going right back to the well
- 37:46again. Team back against the wall.
- 37:48We're going under on their starting pitcher.
- 37:50Under 14 1/2 outs for Shane Beaver.
- 37:53And then on the other side, the strikeout total for Kirby is 4
- 37:561/2. I'm going over on that 1 -, 114
- 37:59is the price over on George Kirby. 4 1/2 strikeouts there.
- 38:03And then I got a college football play for you.
- 38:05We hit last night outright with my Panthers of Florida
- 38:08International. We're going with another doggie
- 38:11tonight, Jacksonville State. They've made a change at
- 38:13quarterback. They're being able to throw the
- 38:15football much better. We'll grab the three at home
- 38:18against Delaware. All righty, that will do it for
- 38:22our coverage of Iowa men's basketball media days.
- 38:25Trent's been in Iowa City. If you missed any of it, he had
- 38:28Bennett Sturtz on earlier. He had Ben McCollum on earlier
- 38:31in our number one. Those podcasts will be up.
- 38:35Looking forward to talking to sip tomorrow a about football as
- 38:37they play on Friday night. But be just what's going on.
- 38:40They're kind of the pulse with Matt Rule.
- 38:42We'll get Sip's thoughts on what he's hearing in Lincoln.
- 38:45That should be fun. Are you hearing anything?
- 38:50No, nothing on that front. What you got something
- 38:53percolating under the surface? I just don't know how you can
- 38:56get it. I mean, how you going to get one
- 38:59of your big targets, A Signeti or somebody that's coaching and
- 39:02is Amarcus Freeman? I mean, these guys are going to
- 39:05the playoffs. I we'll see where it goes.
- 39:08All good stuff Trent, drive back safely.
- 39:10We'll see you tomorrow. We appreciate you.
- 39:12The audience being with us is Trent and I talk sports with you
