- 0:00Speaker 1: And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard
- 0:03Speaker 1: the voice of the fourth Beast say, come and see.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And I looked and behold a pale horse. And his
- 0:11Speaker 1: name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed
- 0:14Speaker 1: with him.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Come and See as an anti Soviet war film directed
- 0:18Speaker 2: by Elam Klimov. It takes place in Nazi occupied Belarus.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We follow around the teenage boy named Fleiora who eagerly
- 0:27Speaker 2: joins a Soviet partisan group. Soviet partisan group basically like
- 0:31Speaker 2: a resistance movement against the Nazi the Nazi regime. It's
- 0:37Speaker 2: based on a nineteen seventy one novel called Katin Katin.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I'm not sure how to pronounce this is k h
- 0:43Speaker 2: at Yan Katin and a collection of survivor testimony testimonies
- 0:49Speaker 2: from I Am from the Fiery Village. One of the screenwriters,
- 0:54Speaker 2: ls Adamovich, was a co author for the latter work,
- 0:59Speaker 2: The I Am from the Fiery Village, So I thought
- 1:02Speaker 2: that was pretty interesting that he's attached to both of
- 1:05Speaker 2: these pieces of work. This is one of those stories
- 1:08Speaker 2: from World War Two that I had never heard about before.
- 1:12Speaker 2: This Nazi occupation lasted from nineteen forty one to nineteen
- 1:16Speaker 2: forty four and more than two million people were killed
- 1:19Speaker 2: in Belarus during those three years, during that three year
- 1:22Speaker 2: time period, so it's horrific. We'll be talking about it
- 1:27Speaker 2: over and over again, but this whole thing is just unimaginable.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Watching this kind of reminded me of watching the movie
- 1:33Speaker 2: The Third Part of the Night, which I did an
- 1:35Speaker 2: episode on a couple of years ago, I think at
- 1:38Speaker 2: least a year or two ago, just because the way
- 1:41Speaker 2: that both of these movies they kind of zoom in
- 1:43Speaker 2: and show what was going on in these occupied areas
- 1:47Speaker 2: in a much more intimate way. You really see a
- 1:50Speaker 2: lot of the specific details, like in the Third Part
- 1:53Speaker 2: of the Night there's the life feeding that was going
- 1:55Speaker 2: on and occupied Poland. That movie is definitely a lot
- 1:59Speaker 2: more heavy as far as the surrealism aspect goes, but
- 2:02Speaker 2: the overall effect is still there. You can feel how
- 2:06Speaker 2: tense everything was and how you know. And they're both
- 2:09Speaker 2: from lived experiences. The director of the Third Part of
- 2:12Speaker 2: The Night grew up and occupied Poland was born there,
- 2:16Speaker 2: so it's from firsthand experience as well as this one
- 2:19Speaker 2: with the I am from the Fiery Village recollection of
- 2:22Speaker 2: this the Belarus Occupy, Occupancy what am I fucking son
- 2:33Speaker 2: of a bitch. I'm gonna be messing this shit up
- 2:35Speaker 2: all night, all these words. I just finished the movie
- 2:38Speaker 2: just right before recording this, so I'm just doing my best.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. Just watch this whole subtitled movie.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So everything's in, you know, several different languages, German, Belarussian,
- 2:53Speaker 2: what else? What other languages are they speaking here? I
- 2:56Speaker 2: don't know. There's a lot going on in this movie anyway.
- 2:59Speaker 2: This is such a heavy subject in a really dense
- 3:03Speaker 2: period of time to learn about. There was so much
- 3:06Speaker 2: going on during the Second World War, and most of
- 3:08Speaker 2: it is, like I said, unimaginable. I really didn't want
- 3:12Speaker 2: to bring up today's politics with all of this. I
- 3:16Speaker 2: just don't think it's comparable. You hear people being called
- 3:19Speaker 2: fascist and Nazi so often nowadays that it feels like
- 3:22Speaker 2: the meaning has really lost some of its sincerity. I
- 3:25Speaker 2: typically hear, usually on the Republican side of things, Republican
- 3:30Speaker 2: speakers or politicians being called Hitler or a Nazi or
- 3:34Speaker 2: a fascist nearly every day. Like if you use social media,
- 3:38Speaker 2: which I think is a big problem with all of
- 3:40Speaker 2: this stuff, you're going to see that at some point
- 3:43Speaker 2: or another, And I understand disagreeing with someone's point of view,
- 3:47Speaker 2: but jumping straight to Hitler or Nazis just comes off
- 3:50Speaker 2: as disingenuous. It makes you sound uninformed and takes away
- 3:54Speaker 2: from what people really went through during World War Two.
- 3:58Speaker 2: By the end of this movie, we learned that over
- 4:00Speaker 2: six hundred villages in Belarussia were burned to the ground
- 4:03Speaker 2: along with the villagers inside. Comparing that to anything that's
- 4:07Speaker 2: going on in the United States right now just is
- 4:09Speaker 2: too hyperbolic for me. Alexi Kravenchko plays Fleora. The creators
- 4:14Speaker 2: of the movie cast all non actors for the role,
- 4:17Speaker 2: so no one in this movie had previous acting experience.
- 4:21Speaker 2: So they did that intentionally. They wanted the reactions to
- 4:24Speaker 2: everything to be genuine, and the actors they thought that
- 4:28Speaker 2: if they cast real actors, they would come off as guarded.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And yeah, that includes Alexi. So this is his, I guess,
- 4:35Speaker 2: his first acting role. And he was fourteen years old
- 4:38Speaker 2: when they started filming this movie. They shot it in
- 4:41Speaker 2: nine months in chronological order. You see the toll that
- 4:44Speaker 2: just from filming this movie, the toll that it takes
- 4:47Speaker 2: on this kid. From what I understand, there wasn't much
- 4:49Speaker 2: makeup being done on him, other than I had heard
- 4:52Speaker 2: that his hair turned gray from filming, because by the
- 4:55Speaker 2: end of it, he has like gray hair as a
- 4:57Speaker 2: fourteen year old boy, which is nuts. But I did
- 5:00Speaker 2: he that they were putting some sort of like silver
- 5:03Speaker 2: paint or dye in his hair as the movie went on.
- 5:07Speaker 2: But by the end of this thing, this kid looks
- 5:09Speaker 2: like a rotten onion. And apparently it's all just from
- 5:12Speaker 2: the stress of what's been going on around him. You
- 5:14Speaker 2: might be thinking of what's so stressful about making a
- 5:17Speaker 2: little movie? You know what I'm saying. People make movies
- 5:20Speaker 2: all the damn time. I've seen The Avengers, and it's
- 5:24Speaker 2: said that in the scenes where he's being shot at.
- 5:27Speaker 2: There's several scenes where he's being shot at in a field.
- 5:29Speaker 2: They used live ammunition and bullets were coming within a
- 5:33Speaker 2: foot from this kid's head. All the explosions are real.
- 5:36Speaker 2: There are a lot of things that you can tell
- 5:38Speaker 2: that they just were not faking that just they look
- 5:42Speaker 2: super uncomfortable in tense, one of those being an animal death.
- 5:46Speaker 2: So that's something that I'm just going to throw it
- 5:48Speaker 2: out there in case you're thinking about watching this movie.
- 5:51Speaker 2: And that's a deal breaker for you. There is a
- 5:53Speaker 2: scene where Fleora and another man are stealing a cow.
- 5:56Speaker 2: These German soldiers show up and just start laying down
- 6:00Speaker 2: tracking fire. They're just blasting everywhere all over this place,
- 6:03Speaker 2: and apparently they really shoot the cow, and the cow
- 6:07Speaker 2: and it dies on screen, which is really uncomfortable to watch.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I was trying to get a credible source about this
- 6:16Speaker 2: because it was something that I had kind of heard
- 6:18Speaker 2: about when I was, you know, looking into this movie
- 6:21Speaker 2: a little bit more, and it's at first I was like, oh,
- 6:24Speaker 2: it kind of seems like heresay, but it doesn't seem
- 6:26Speaker 2: unbelievable knowing that, you know, the track record of making
- 6:29Speaker 2: movies in the eighties and stuff like that, and the
- 6:32Speaker 2: animal deaths especially, it seems like movies that are being
- 6:36Speaker 2: shot on FOURG and with foreign rules, you know what
- 6:40Speaker 2: I mean. It seems like there was a lot less
- 6:42Speaker 2: strict rules as far as like animal cruelty goes in
- 6:46Speaker 2: other countries and stuff. So I was trying to figure
- 6:50Speaker 2: out if this really happened or not. A lot of
- 6:52Speaker 2: the sources were just lists that were like ten crazy
- 6:55Speaker 2: facts about the movie, come and see and stuff like that.
- 6:58Speaker 2: So I wasn't really sure, you know, it wasn't coming
- 7:00Speaker 2: from I didn't see anything from like the director. But
- 7:04Speaker 2: when I just google it, an AI overview pops up
- 7:07Speaker 2: that says that this actually isn't true and that the
- 7:10Speaker 2: cow wasn't really killed and that they used a prop.
- 7:13Speaker 2: But just the fact that they were using live ammunition
- 7:17Speaker 2: for this scene, I kind of find that hard to
- 7:19Speaker 2: believe after watching the movie. Hopefully that's the case, though,
- 7:23Speaker 2: hopefully this cow is living its best life right now
- 7:26Speaker 2: somewhere getting those residual checks from Come and See. Alexi
- 7:32Speaker 2: would go on to act in other roles and even
- 7:34Speaker 2: is credited for a movie called Rowing for Gold that
- 7:37Speaker 2: came out last year. And yeah, on his Wikipedia it
- 7:40Speaker 2: looks like he's been super active, like almost putting out
- 7:42Speaker 2: a movie every year, so pretty great. Great that he
- 7:45Speaker 2: was able to make a career out of this afterwards,
- 7:47Speaker 2: after going through all this crazy shit, because basically, they
- 7:50Speaker 2: just took this fourteen year old non actor through hell
- 7:53Speaker 2: and filmed it and put that up there. It is
- 7:56Speaker 2: regarded as one of the best child actor performances of
- 7:59Speaker 2: all time, so I guess that's something pretty sweet. And
- 8:04Speaker 2: the movie sits in a lot of top fifty best
- 8:07Speaker 2: movies of all time lists, or at least that's what
- 8:09Speaker 2: I've seen. Anyway, it seems like it's a pretty highly
- 8:12Speaker 2: regarded and probably in a lot of top tens as
- 8:16Speaker 2: far as best anti war movies of all time go.
- 8:19Speaker 2: So yeah, highly credited movies. Definitely one that you're going
- 8:23Speaker 2: to here recommended. It's a tough watch though. Overall.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I would say if you.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Do want to watch the movie, there's a DVD quality
- 8:32Speaker 2: version on YouTube for free that I believe the production
- 8:35Speaker 2: company actually put out on their YouTube, or you can
- 8:38Speaker 2: rent it from the Criterion channel, or you can buy
- 8:40Speaker 2: a copy.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Of it from them as well, I believe.
- 8:43Speaker 2: So with all that said, let's get into some damn
- 8:46Speaker 2: spoilers for come and see.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Now.
- 8:50Speaker 2: We just start off with a guy. He's just kind
- 8:52Speaker 2: of hollering around a beach and he's just like, hey,
- 8:56Speaker 2: show yourselves, you know, And like I said, this is
- 8:59Speaker 2: all said titled, so I'm doing my best here with
- 9:01Speaker 2: some of the dialogue and shit, some kid comes walking
- 9:05Speaker 2: up after that and he's just repeating a rhyme about
- 9:07Speaker 2: like wiping your ass with your finger, and he's doing
- 9:10Speaker 2: it in like the voice of like that frog kid
- 9:13Speaker 2: from The Little Rascals, if you know what I'm talking about.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So right off the bat, I didn't know what the
- 9:18Speaker 2: fuck was going on here. This guy that's hollering for them,
- 9:21Speaker 2: he's like the village elder. I guess like he's the
- 9:24Speaker 2: guy in charge of the village that they live at.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Apparently these villages that they're going through typically like have
- 9:30Speaker 2: a couple hundred people in him or something like that,
- 9:33Speaker 2: maybe even less, it sounds like. So anyway, we see
- 9:36Speaker 2: our main character just kind of hiding out in a
- 9:38Speaker 2: bush until this village elder leaves, and then the kid
- 9:42Speaker 2: that comes up to him doing the frog voice, you know,
- 9:44Speaker 2: he starts like cracking him up. This little frog voice
- 9:47Speaker 2: is getting him to laugh pretty hard. And then we
- 9:49Speaker 2: get a title card that says that it's nineteen forty three.
- 9:52Speaker 2: We see these two kids run off together and they're
- 9:54Speaker 2: just digging around in the sand. Apparently they're looking for
- 9:58Speaker 2: a gun, like they're there must have been some sort
- 10:01Speaker 2: of a battle or something going that went on here,
- 10:04Speaker 2: and it sounds like these kids are trying to find
- 10:06Speaker 2: a gun so they can join the resistance. But anyway,
- 10:09Speaker 2: the village elder is basically warning them like, don't go
- 10:12Speaker 2: looking for guns. You're just going to attract the attention
- 10:15Speaker 2: of the Germans and the you know, like the Soviet
- 10:20Speaker 2: allies or whatever. I can't remember what it was called
- 10:22Speaker 2: right now, but apparently from what I was reading, there
- 10:25Speaker 2: was like a million Soviets that were like working with
- 10:30Speaker 2: the Germans to kind of like help them get through
- 10:33Speaker 2: this area in territory and stuff like that and take over.
- 10:36Speaker 2: So it sounds like they're almost like spies. Like if
- 10:40Speaker 2: these kids show up with guns or something like that,
- 10:43Speaker 2: it might alert the attention, It might look bad to
- 10:45Speaker 2: the Nazis and they might be like, hey, we got
- 10:47Speaker 2: to take these fucking kids out now because they're getting
- 10:50Speaker 2: guns or something, or they might join the resistance and
- 10:52Speaker 2: try to help them out. So anyway, they hear some
- 10:55Speaker 2: engines going on nearby, they hide quickly, and we see
- 10:58Speaker 2: that there is a there's like a plane flying overhead
- 11:03Speaker 2: that spots them, and right as this is happening, Flora
- 11:07Speaker 2: Flora shoves his arms like elbow deep into the sand
- 11:10Speaker 2: and finds a rifle. After that, he goes back to
- 11:13Speaker 2: his home. His mom is really upset because he's just
- 11:16Speaker 2: like really wanting to join the war or something, or
- 11:19Speaker 2: like he really wants to join this group. She hands
- 11:22Speaker 2: him an axe and she's like, you know what, why
- 11:23Speaker 2: don't you go ahead and just kill us all get
- 11:26Speaker 2: it over with. That would be better than you join
- 11:28Speaker 2: in the damn resistance or whatever. After that, some resistance
- 11:31Speaker 2: shoulders soldiers show up, and Flora is very excited. He's
- 11:35Speaker 2: just kind of like smiling, not really saying anything. He
- 11:38Speaker 2: gathers his gun and a little supply box. One of
- 11:41Speaker 2: the soldiers asked if his sisters are twins, and they're
- 11:44Speaker 2: just like, yeah, I wasn't sure these guys were at first.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I just noticed that they were dressed like soldiers and
- 11:49Speaker 2: I was like, hopefully they're not Nazis. And they take
- 11:51Speaker 2: the twins, you know what I'm saying, and do all
- 11:52Speaker 2: the crazy experiments on him that that you know that
- 11:56Speaker 2: they were doing at that time. So the soldiers they
- 11:59Speaker 2: talk from, they load Flora up into a wagon and
- 12:03Speaker 2: throw a little turkey on him, and then they just
- 12:06Speaker 2: take off. The mom is sobbing, she is freaking the
- 12:08Speaker 2: fuck out. Obviously she doesn't want him to be a
- 12:10Speaker 2: part of this at all. He obviously doesn't understand what
- 12:14Speaker 2: he's getting into, but he's very excited. He thinks he's
- 12:17Speaker 2: doing the right thing and you know, fighting for what's right.
- 12:20Speaker 2: So right away you get the feeling that, you know,
- 12:25Speaker 2: you get the feeling that Flora is a bright kid
- 12:27Speaker 2: and he just doesn't really understand what he's getting into.
- 12:31Speaker 2: So it's like you see it coming from a mile away. Though,
- 12:34Speaker 2: when you also hear whenever he's in the back of
- 12:37Speaker 2: the wagon, there's like another guy that they're bringing with him,
- 12:40Speaker 2: and he's kind of an older guy, and you hear
- 12:42Speaker 2: Flora just kind of talking to him about the village
- 12:44Speaker 2: elder and he's like, yeah, the village older is a
- 12:46Speaker 2: fucking idiot. He doesn't know shit about anything. And that
- 12:50Speaker 2: guy just kind of looks at him and says, I
- 12:52Speaker 2: don't understand and that's it. And it's like, Okay, maybe
- 12:55Speaker 2: this isn't the brightest the brightest bunch of people sit
- 13:00Speaker 2: and in this wagon with a bunch of turkeys and shit. Anyway,
- 13:02Speaker 2: when he gets to the camp, he takes some time
- 13:04Speaker 2: just to talk kind of like get to know everybody,
- 13:07Speaker 2: and he's like politely greeting everyone and like he's like, oh,
- 13:10Speaker 2: nice to meet you. I'm Fleora, you know, and everyone
- 13:13Speaker 2: just looks like sunk in faces, like gray complexions, and
- 13:17Speaker 2: they're just like, I don't give a fuck, Bud. He
- 13:20Speaker 2: gets invited to be in a group picture, and this
- 13:22Speaker 2: is like all just kind of like building excitement in him,
- 13:25Speaker 2: you know where he's like, Yeah, this is actually going
- 13:27Speaker 2: to be really cool. Later that night, Flora is standing guard.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Some dude just kind of comes up to him asks
- 13:32Speaker 2: for the password, and the guy just like walks up
- 13:35Speaker 2: without saying anything. Flora's like, hey, give me the password,
- 13:37Speaker 2: give me the password, you know, and this guy's like
- 13:40Speaker 2: he doesn't say shit. And then he's just like why
- 13:42Speaker 2: didn't you shoot me? And Flora's like, well, I recognize
- 13:45Speaker 2: that you're like the leader or whatever, and he's like
- 13:46Speaker 2: I don't care, you should have shot me or something
- 13:49Speaker 2: like that. It's like I get that you're making a point,
- 13:51Speaker 2: but what if he did just fucking blow you away?
- 13:54Speaker 2: Like would that really been worth it just to prove
- 13:56Speaker 2: a point to this fourteen year old kid?
- 13:58Speaker 3: Uh.
- 13:58Speaker 2: The guy walks off after telling to take an extra shift,
- 14:01Speaker 2: and then some other group of guys show up and
- 14:03Speaker 2: they're just like now we're taking over now or something
- 14:06Speaker 2: it's our turn to watch the camp.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I don't know the ins and outs of these resistance
- 14:12Speaker 2: camps and how shit like this works, what the politics
- 14:14Speaker 2: are like, you know, inside of these things. I don't
- 14:18Speaker 2: know what the hierarchy is here. The next day, we
- 14:20Speaker 2: see Flora fully inside this giant cooking pot and he's
- 14:24Speaker 2: just like cleaning the hell out of it. It sounds
- 14:26Speaker 2: like basically he's just kind of getting the shit end
- 14:28Speaker 2: of all these jobs to do or whatever. And this lady,
- 14:32Speaker 2: I think it's Glosha comes up. I'm pretty sure this
- 14:35Speaker 2: is Glossa at this point, but we don't really find
- 14:37Speaker 2: out her name until later. She just like dumps a
- 14:39Speaker 2: bunch of weeds and shit on him. And then we
- 14:41Speaker 2: see the soldiers. They're like cooking a cow in it.
- 14:44Speaker 2: When they took that picture earlier, we saw that they
- 14:46Speaker 2: had a cow that says like eat this before the
- 14:49Speaker 2: Nazis do, or something like that. There's a big morality speech.
- 14:53Speaker 2: As the resistance is getting ready to march on and
- 14:56Speaker 2: go take on some damn Nazis, Flora is about to
- 14:59Speaker 2: leave with them. He's going to get a go with
- 15:01Speaker 2: him and fight this fight. But this older recruiter kind
- 15:04Speaker 2: of like pipes up and is like, hey, I can't
- 15:06Speaker 2: fucking march because my boots are all fucked up. They're
- 15:09Speaker 2: you know, blown apart and shit. So they're like, all right, hey,
- 15:12Speaker 2: little boy, you gotta give up your damn boots to
- 15:14Speaker 2: this guy because he's more important than you are. He's
- 15:17Speaker 2: older and shit. So Fleora has to give his boots away,
- 15:20Speaker 2: and he's not allowed to go with the guy, so
- 15:22Speaker 2: he's got to stay behind with the reserves. And he
- 15:25Speaker 2: is so torn up about this that he wanders off
- 15:27Speaker 2: into the woods and just cries by himself. He's like,
- 15:29Speaker 2: fuck me, this is exactly what I didn't want to
- 15:32Speaker 2: fucking happen. I wanted to go shoot some damn Nazis.
- 15:35Speaker 2: He accidentally stomps out a bird's nest while this is
- 15:38Speaker 2: going on, and this is another thing where it's just like, okay,
- 15:43Speaker 2: he really stomped out the damn bird nest, and there's
- 15:45Speaker 2: like dead birds are and shit. It's just like, all right,
- 15:48Speaker 2: I don't know if you needed to do all that,
- 15:50Speaker 2: Maybe just make a crunching noise, do it off screen
- 15:54Speaker 2: or something. We don't need to be killing animals left
- 15:56Speaker 2: and right in these damn movies. Anyway, while Fleora is sulking,
- 16:00Speaker 2: he hears this girl, Glosser, crying too. He walks over
- 16:03Speaker 2: to her and they just kind of start crying together
- 16:05Speaker 2: until they start laughing, and then you know, they kind
- 16:08Speaker 2: of bond that way. I guess Flora asked who she
- 16:11Speaker 2: was like getting all dressed up for, and she stops
- 16:13Speaker 2: crying and gets a little bit scary towards him. She
- 16:16Speaker 2: kind of like gives him this like almost psychotic look,
- 16:20Speaker 2: and she just starts telling him that they left him.
- 16:22Speaker 2: She's like almost pissed it that he's even asking. She's like, Oh,
- 16:25Speaker 2: they left you behind because you're just a little fucking boy.
- 16:28Speaker 2: And then he starts getting all pissed off back at her.
- 16:31Speaker 2: He's just kind of like what He's like, I didn't
- 16:33Speaker 2: I don't think he realizes that he offended her. I
- 16:36Speaker 2: guess by asking who she got dressed up for. You know,
- 16:38Speaker 2: I don't think he thought that was gonna be like
- 16:40Speaker 2: a sore subject. He's just making conversation, but she turns
- 16:43Speaker 2: it back on him. She's just like, Yeah, you're just
- 16:46Speaker 2: a fucking little bitty ass bitch ass boy, and they're
- 16:49Speaker 2: gonna leave you here because they feel sorry for you
- 16:51Speaker 2: because you're gonna get fucking killed. And he's like, oh
- 16:54Speaker 2: what it's like, all right, bitch, I was just trying
- 16:57Speaker 2: to be your damn friend. She starts going off about
- 17:00Speaker 2: like this dream she had about the leader getting killed
- 17:02Speaker 2: and stuff, or maybe the leader had a dream about
- 17:05Speaker 2: getting killed during this whole march, and shit. Fleora is
- 17:09Speaker 2: realizing that this bitch a little freaky right now. She
- 17:12Speaker 2: starts just staring at him and asking, why don't you
- 17:14Speaker 2: hear me? Why don't you see me? I exist? And
- 17:18Speaker 2: then she says, like you're deaf and blind and shit
- 17:20Speaker 2: like that. She's just like going off on him about
- 17:22Speaker 2: some almost like in some like poetic way that I
- 17:25Speaker 2: don't think he's I don't think his fourteen year old
- 17:27Speaker 2: brain is really ready for at this point in his life.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I think he's like, damn, I thought people were just
- 17:31Speaker 2: like either happy or sad. You know, I didn't realize
- 17:34Speaker 2: there was this weird gray area of emotions that we
- 17:37Speaker 2: got going on right here with Glosha. And he starts
- 17:41Speaker 2: looking a little worried. She just keeps going on about
- 17:43Speaker 2: how like she wants children and how she'd do anything
- 17:46Speaker 2: for him and he's just kind of like what She's like,
- 17:49Speaker 2: I would even blow myself up with a fucking grenade
- 17:51Speaker 2: right now, and she grabs his grenade off his belt,
- 17:53Speaker 2: but he kind of like stops her, and he's like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 17:56Speaker 2: what the fuck's going on? I just like, we just met.
- 17:59Speaker 2: You don't need a blow yourself up with a grenade.
- 18:02Speaker 2: While this is going on, there's like some rumbling in
- 18:05Speaker 2: the distance that you just kind of like lightly hear,
- 18:07Speaker 2: like something's coming, you know. And then they see that
- 18:10Speaker 2: plane from earlier whenever Flora was on the beach finding
- 18:13Speaker 2: the damn rifle, and Glossies starts joking about shooting it.
- 18:17Speaker 2: She grabs his gun and she's like, how about we
- 18:18Speaker 2: blast it? That'd be pretty funny. And they're kind of
- 18:22Speaker 2: laughing about this, but then they noticed a bunch of
- 18:23Speaker 2: parachutes coming down, and we just see paratroopers dropping in
- 18:27Speaker 2: like fucking left and right, and they're just like, oh fuck,
- 18:30Speaker 2: wait a minute, are those fucking paratroopers?
- 18:33Speaker 3: Ah fuck?
- 18:34Speaker 2: And then bombs just start dropping all over the fucking place.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Shit's getting blown everywhere, Trees are getting blown high into
- 18:40Speaker 2: the fucking sky. It's nuts at this point in the movie,
- 18:43Speaker 2: Flora goes half deaf because of the bombs, and you
- 18:46Speaker 2: just get a really bad like tonightis sound coming through.
- 18:50Speaker 2: It's pretty rough, like I was watching this with headphones on,
- 18:53Speaker 2: and it it hits you so hard, and it just
- 18:56Speaker 2: keeps going. You think it's gonna like fade in and
- 18:58Speaker 2: out like shell shock or something. No, it's just this
- 19:02Speaker 2: really high pitched noise that just like pierces your ear.
- 19:05Speaker 2: And basically at this point you're hearing how Fleora is hearing,
- 19:09Speaker 2: and it's basically like the only thing you hear or
- 19:12Speaker 2: the things that you do hear sound like it's underwater,
- 19:15Speaker 2: like almost like this bubbly sound. Glossha comes up yelling
- 19:19Speaker 2: for him, but he can't hear her ass obviously, and
- 19:22Speaker 2: then they notice a paratrooper that's like stuck in a
- 19:24Speaker 2: tree above them, trying to cut himself down. She grabs
- 19:27Speaker 2: them and she drags them away from the wood. She's like,
- 19:29Speaker 2: we gotta get the fuck out of here, buddy. They
- 19:32Speaker 2: are nearly shot multiple times during the scene, and it
- 19:34Speaker 2: is fucking crazy. I don't know if this is one
- 19:36Speaker 2: of the scenes where there was live ammunition. I'm just
- 19:39Speaker 2: gonna guess that it was because they don't like say, like, yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 2: we use live rounds for this one scene. They just
- 19:45Speaker 2: say like, we mostly use live rounds for the filming
- 19:48Speaker 2: of this movie. And you see like trees getting blown
- 19:50Speaker 2: apart with bullets and shit, and it's like, god, damn,
- 19:55Speaker 2: I just can't imagine, like what would they have done it?
- 19:57Speaker 2: I mean, what would they have done? They just blasted
- 20:01Speaker 2: one of these kids. Like both of these actors look
- 20:03Speaker 2: really young. We know that Fleora is like fourteen. This
- 20:07Speaker 2: girl doesn't look that much older either, Like she looks
- 20:10Speaker 2: like maybe she could be fifteen or sixteen or some shit.
- 20:12Speaker 2: So it's crazy to think that they're signing up for this.
- 20:16Speaker 2: So these two they hide in a ditch until the
- 20:18Speaker 2: Nazi soldiers they're just kind of like walking by and
- 20:21Speaker 2: they don't notice them. They're all covered up in brush
- 20:24Speaker 2: and shit like that and debris. After the coast is clear,
- 20:27Speaker 2: Flora makes a little hut for him and Galosha to
- 20:29Speaker 2: take shelter in. He tells her that the plan is
- 20:32Speaker 2: going to be We're going back to my home village.
- 20:35Speaker 2: We're gonna go to my mom's house. We're going to
- 20:36Speaker 2: hang out there for a while we're gonna do something
- 20:41Speaker 2: a little more chill than this, right, maybe play some
- 20:44Speaker 2: N sixty four and drink some damn mountain dew or
- 20:47Speaker 2: something like that, back to the good old days. There's
- 20:50Speaker 2: some shots of them sleeping in like this big ass
- 20:53Speaker 2: stork just comes up and watches them, which I don't
- 20:55Speaker 2: know what that was about, or if that had any
- 20:57Speaker 2: kind of deeper meaning, but it's one of those movies
- 20:59Speaker 2: where just like, is that symbolic, I don't know, Maybe
- 21:05Speaker 2: it is. The next morning it's raining, so the two
- 21:09Speaker 2: just use this as a chance to kind of like
- 21:10Speaker 2: wash themselves off, and they're having a pretty good time
- 21:13Speaker 2: all things consider. They're like cracking up, laughing. The sound
- 21:17Speaker 2: is still all fucked up, though, so we know Fleora's
- 21:19Speaker 2: ears are pretty bad and glosses. She jumps up on
- 21:23Speaker 2: a suitcase and just starts doing this like little dance
- 21:26Speaker 2: number thing. It's like what you would imagine like an
- 21:28Speaker 2: Irish jig would be or something like that, and Fleora
- 21:31Speaker 2: is just cracking up. He thinks this is the funniest
- 21:33Speaker 2: fucking thing he's ever seen in his life. After this,
- 21:36Speaker 2: they get dressed. Flora must have hurt his foot because
- 21:39Speaker 2: he just starts using like makeshift crushes to finish the
- 21:41Speaker 2: walk back to the village. Right away, things seem off
- 21:45Speaker 2: at the village. It doesn't look like the same village
- 21:47Speaker 2: that he left. The village is too quiet. He walks
- 21:51Speaker 2: right in and into his house. It's empty. There's nothing there.
- 21:54Speaker 2: There's just like toys on the floor with like flies
- 21:56Speaker 2: all over him, and shit, no sign of his mom
- 21:59Speaker 2: or his sisters. He tells Glosha, He's like, you know,
- 22:01Speaker 2: they probably just went somewhere. They're just out at the
- 22:04Speaker 2: store or some shit.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Maybe they'll be back later.
- 22:06Speaker 2: She comes in and the place is filled with flies,
- 22:09Speaker 2: old food sitting on the table. Flora grabs a pot
- 22:12Speaker 2: out of the oven and he's like, hey, the pot's
- 22:14Speaker 2: still warm. He takes a bite out of it and
- 22:17Speaker 2: is like he's fine with it. But then Glosha takes
- 22:19Speaker 2: a body. He's like, come on, eat up, Glosha, this
- 22:21Speaker 2: shit's delicious. She gets about one and a half bites
- 22:25Speaker 2: in and she just pukes all over the place, and
- 22:28Speaker 2: you kind of just get the idea that like Fleora
- 22:30Speaker 2: is in serious denial about what must have happened here,
- 22:34Speaker 2: that like this food's gone rotten because no one's been
- 22:38Speaker 2: at the damn house because they're probably all dead. He
- 22:41Speaker 2: runs outside, looks around some more. His expression is still
- 22:44Speaker 2: showing like shell shock at this point, like he still
- 22:47Speaker 2: looks like he's in disbelief. And then he's like, I
- 22:50Speaker 2: know where to find them, and he takes off running.
- 22:52Speaker 2: As they're running away, Glosha looks over her shoulder and
- 22:55Speaker 2: just sees like behind the house there's like this giant
- 22:58Speaker 2: stack of dead bodies, and so she's like.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Oh fuck.
- 23:02Speaker 2: But he doesn't look around and see that, or if
- 23:05Speaker 2: he does, he doesn't like it doesn't show him look
- 23:07Speaker 2: around and see that. So I think he just kind
- 23:10Speaker 2: of like has blinders on at this point where he's like, Nope,
- 23:12Speaker 2: everything's fine. I'm gonna go find my parents, my mom,
- 23:15Speaker 2: and I kit my sisters, you know. Flora starts pushing
- 23:19Speaker 2: his way through this bog that's about chest deep. It's
- 23:22Speaker 2: just like really thick, like you know, sewagey looking shit.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Glosha follows them in there, but they're just like barely
- 23:29Speaker 2: making it through, and he's like, this is where my
- 23:32Speaker 2: family went. They must have gone over here to this
- 23:34Speaker 2: island that's on the other side.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Of the bog.
- 23:36Speaker 2: It's like, Okay, I guess that makes sense. I mean
- 23:41Speaker 2: good as a good ideas any right, Flora. And then
- 23:48Speaker 2: the sound design it really stands out here. It's almost
- 23:51Speaker 2: bubbly sounding with like discordant like organ chords in the background.
- 23:56Speaker 2: You just kind of hear like animals or people screeching
- 23:59Speaker 2: really loudly.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It just you can I don't know.
- 24:04Speaker 2: It does a really good job of like showing how
- 24:06Speaker 2: Flora is feeling and how like this stuff is like
- 24:09Speaker 2: building inside of him. So when they get out of
- 24:11Speaker 2: the bog, Glosha loses it and she's like, listen, your
- 24:14Speaker 2: family's back there in the village. They're fucking dead. And
- 24:17Speaker 2: Flora is like, I disagree. And then he grabs her
- 24:20Speaker 2: and starts choking her, and he launches her back into
- 24:22Speaker 2: the bog like he's gonna try to kill her. I
- 24:24Speaker 2: think for a second, but he changes his mind. He's like,
- 24:28Speaker 2: oh shit, I'm not going to kill you. They look
- 24:29Speaker 2: over and see a guy just kind of watching them nearby.
- 24:33Speaker 2: He comes over and helps Glosha out of the water.
- 24:35Speaker 2: She starts telling the guy that Flora dragged her in
- 24:37Speaker 2: there to kill her. She's like, he's gone fucking deaf
- 24:40Speaker 2: and crazy and his whole family's fucking dead and stuff
- 24:44Speaker 2: like that. And this guy brings them to this other
- 24:46Speaker 2: little makeshift community out in the woods, and one of
- 24:49Speaker 2: the women is from the town that Flora is from,
- 24:53Speaker 2: and she's like, Flora, your folks are dead. I saw
- 24:55Speaker 2: them get killed, you know, and he's just kind of
- 24:57Speaker 2: like fuck. Like, his whole face the whole time is
- 25:00Speaker 2: just like there's many a time in this movie where
- 25:04Speaker 2: Flora just pulls off the thousand yard Stare perfectly, and
- 25:07Speaker 2: it's it's like the cover of the movie is just
- 25:11Speaker 2: his face looking fucking, you know, insane, just looking completely gone.
- 25:18Speaker 2: They're led to the leader of the town, the town elder.
- 25:21Speaker 2: You know, this guy has burned from probably about like
- 25:24Speaker 2: sixty percent of his body is like completely black and burnt,
- 25:28Speaker 2: and he's just lying on like this bed of hay,
- 25:30Speaker 2: and he tells Floria, he's just like, I told you so, motherfucker.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I told you not to dig up the goddamn gun.
- 25:36Speaker 2: And then he explains that he was covered in petrol
- 25:39Speaker 2: and burned alive and while this was happening, he was
- 25:41Speaker 2: begging for the Nazis to kill him, but they just
- 25:43Speaker 2: laughed at him and let him burn there. So he
- 25:46Speaker 2: really hit Fleoria with one of the craziest I told
- 25:48Speaker 2: you sos of all time. I can't believe that. After
- 25:51Speaker 2: hearing this, Flora just shoves his head into the mud
- 25:54Speaker 2: and an attempt to kill himself. Glosha grabs him and
- 25:57Speaker 2: stops him, pulls him out of there, and then is
- 26:00Speaker 2: just Glosha trying to get Floria to eat some greens,
- 26:03Speaker 2: and he is looking much worse. His look just overall
- 26:08Speaker 2: is getting much worse. He's got like these deep bags
- 26:10Speaker 2: under his eyes that look like big ass bruises almost,
- 26:14Speaker 2: and he looks wiped out. He's getting this super pale complexion.
- 26:17Speaker 2: His hair is looking like thinner. I'm not sure why.
- 26:20Speaker 2: But at this little camp, they just have like this
- 26:22Speaker 2: skeleton on a pole that they're working on. They're like
- 26:26Speaker 2: molding skin around its face and stuff like that, using
- 26:30Speaker 2: like mud or clay or something. And as it goes on,
- 26:33Speaker 2: we see that they're making a hitler dummy. So people
- 26:36Speaker 2: take turns just like spitting on it. And after Flora
- 26:40Speaker 2: gets all of his hair cut off, he joins in
- 26:42Speaker 2: with spitting on it and stuff like that. Some of
- 26:44Speaker 2: the men of this company they're like, hey, we're going
- 26:46Speaker 2: on a little mission, Flora, you want to come with us?
- 26:49Speaker 2: And he's just like hell yeah. As he's walking away,
- 26:52Speaker 2: Glosha tries to comfort him by being like, hey, there's
- 26:54Speaker 2: no way you could have known that any of this
- 26:56Speaker 2: would happen just by digging a fucking rifle out of
- 26:58Speaker 2: the ground, you know what I mean. And he's just like, no,
- 27:01Speaker 2: it's my fault. And so he's like it's all mine,
- 27:04Speaker 2: all my fault. God damn it. So the group that
- 27:07Speaker 2: Fleora is hiking with, they have four guys in it,
- 27:09Speaker 2: and at this point I wasn't really sure, like what
- 27:12Speaker 2: the plan is. I think what they're I think they're
- 27:14Speaker 2: going out to just try to find food or whatever.
- 27:16Speaker 2: But they do bring this Hitler dummy with him, and
- 27:18Speaker 2: it looks heavy as hell. It's like six feet fucking
- 27:21Speaker 2: tall or something.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I didn't understand the plan. We'll figure out what they're
- 27:26Speaker 2: using it for, I guess soon enough. Then we just
- 27:29Speaker 2: cut to some bald guy running through a field being
- 27:31Speaker 2: shot at really amazing camera camera work here and throughout
- 27:36Speaker 2: the entire movie, the camera work is fantastic. It's just
- 27:39Speaker 2: really beautifully done. And I didn't recognize this bald guy,
- 27:43Speaker 2: but he is one of the dudes that's in this party.
- 27:46Speaker 2: So they were being shot at. But after they make
- 27:48Speaker 2: cover in the woods, Flora just starts like cracking up NonStop.
- 27:52Speaker 2: He's just losing it. His damn mental stability is basically
- 27:55Speaker 2: gone at this point. And then we cut to this
- 27:57Speaker 2: tank just hauling ass down a dirt road. It's a
- 28:00Speaker 2: fucking big ass German tank and it's like swerving all
- 28:03Speaker 2: over the place. After it passes by them, Flora and
- 28:06Speaker 2: the gang they run out in the middle of the
- 28:08Speaker 2: road and they plant the Hitler dummy in the ground
- 28:11Speaker 2: in the middle of this dirt road. So from what
- 28:13Speaker 2: they're saying, it sounds like that this giant dummy is
- 28:16Speaker 2: supposed to explode. I don't know what's going to trigger it,
- 28:20Speaker 2: if you know, I don't know. It wasn't really clear
- 28:23Speaker 2: to me, like what what the endgame was with this
- 28:26Speaker 2: damn Hiller dummy. So they camp out here for a
- 28:30Speaker 2: little while to you know, rest regain their energy and
- 28:33Speaker 2: stuff like that. They decide to head back to the
- 28:35Speaker 2: camp because they can't get any supplies. There's too many
- 28:38Speaker 2: damned German soldiers around. They didn't realize there would be
- 28:41Speaker 2: this many Germans patrolling the area. Flora and the main
- 28:45Speaker 2: guy they cross the road and right after they get
- 28:47Speaker 2: across it, a huge explosion happens behind them. They look back,
- 28:51Speaker 2: they see that the that they were camping out in
- 28:54Speaker 2: a minefield, so the other does they get completely blown apart.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Flora looks shocked again. He looks up and sees that
- 29:06Speaker 2: that same plane is flying over them that we saw
- 29:08Speaker 2: at the beginning of the movie. Now we cut to
- 29:11Speaker 2: a guy going outside to piss. The camera is following
- 29:14Speaker 2: him like POV style. The leader of the gang and
- 29:17Speaker 2: Flora they just stop this guy mid piss and steal
- 29:20Speaker 2: his cow. They're like, hey, cut off the stream or whatever,
- 29:22Speaker 2: and the guy's like fine, and so he like zips
- 29:25Speaker 2: it up, you know, goes and helps him steal his cow.
- 29:29Speaker 2: So they get his cow. They run off. They pause
- 29:32Speaker 2: to do a quick milking once they get far enough
- 29:34Speaker 2: away from this farm, and they just drink the damn
- 29:37Speaker 2: cow milk straight from the damn utters, which looks wonderful.
- 29:44Speaker 2: It's like a dream come true for me to just
- 29:46Speaker 2: drink that cow milk straight from the teets. It's got
- 29:49Speaker 2: to be so pure. This little bit of fun is
- 29:51Speaker 2: quickly interrupted by a flair being shot in the sky
- 29:54Speaker 2: and a bunch of fucking machine gun fire, so they
- 29:57Speaker 2: both drop down. But when Flora crawls back to chain
- 30:00Speaker 2: on the older guy, he finds that he's been shot
- 30:02Speaker 2: to death. He starts crawling after the cow and grabs
- 30:05Speaker 2: a hold of its leash, But pretty much as soon
- 30:07Speaker 2: as that happens, another flare goes up and more machine
- 30:10Speaker 2: guns start blasting, and the cow is shot to death.
- 30:13Speaker 2: And it's awful, because, yeah, just the whole thing. Even
- 30:18Speaker 2: when I read that little like AI overview where it's like, no,
- 30:22Speaker 2: the cow didn't die, I was just like, nah, I'm
- 30:25Speaker 2: pretty sure the cow fucking died. Unless they got a
- 30:27Speaker 2: really good cow actor. It looks like the cow dies, Flora.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Flora just lays down next to the cow and starts
- 30:34Speaker 2: crying until he falls asleep. When he wakes up, he
- 30:37Speaker 2: tries to drag the cow to its feet. I wasn't
- 30:40Speaker 2: sure if this was part of him being in denial
- 30:42Speaker 2: about death just like overall, or if he's just really
- 30:45Speaker 2: wanting to get this cow back as a food supply.
- 30:48Speaker 2: But he starts walking through the field as foggy as hell.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Now for some reason, he comes across a horse loaded
- 30:53Speaker 2: up to a hay wagon and he just steals it.
- 30:55Speaker 2: He's like, fuck yeah, I'll get the cow back and
- 30:57Speaker 2: the fucking wagon. The farmer runs up, this is a
- 31:01Speaker 2: different farmer. He tries to stop him, but Flora like
- 31:04Speaker 2: points his rifle at me. He's like, get the fuck back.
- 31:06Speaker 2: I'm taking your damn horse and stuff. The farmer's like,
- 31:08Speaker 2: wait a minute, there's some trucks coming nearby. We need
- 31:11Speaker 2: to hide. So Fliora throws all of his ammunition, all
- 31:16Speaker 2: his guns and shit like that, all of his weapons
- 31:18Speaker 2: in a big like hay pile and takes off his jacket.
- 31:21Speaker 2: And the farmer's like, don't be fucking stupid, bud, get
- 31:23Speaker 2: rid of that shit. Come with me. So Flora comes
- 31:25Speaker 2: with him on the wagon. He's like, here's I'm going
- 31:28Speaker 2: to give you a fake name and a little fake
- 31:30Speaker 2: backstory just in case we get questions by these damn Nazis.
- 31:35Speaker 2: We see some Nazis driving around with a dead body
- 31:38Speaker 2: on like a motorcycle. It's like on the sidecar the
- 31:41Speaker 2: motorcycle or something, and it has a sign on it.
- 31:44Speaker 2: That says I insult. I insulted a Nazi soldier this morning.
- 31:48Speaker 2: There's quite a few other Nazi vehicles patrolling this area,
- 31:51Speaker 2: so they're just like hauling ass to get back to
- 31:53Speaker 2: this guy's cabin. When they get inside the small cabin,
- 31:56Speaker 2: we just see about thirty or more people hiding out
- 31:58Speaker 2: in this place. The soldier comes in and everyone's worried
- 32:01Speaker 2: they'll be taken away. They start feeding the soldier. Flora
- 32:04Speaker 2: gets up and the soldiers starts like making It's like
- 32:07Speaker 2: the soldiers outside, So there's like hundreds of soldiers rolling
- 32:11Speaker 2: through this little village. At this point, they start making
- 32:14Speaker 2: an announcement to meet at the middle of town and
- 32:16Speaker 2: bring your yours and your family's papers to be checked.
- 32:20Speaker 2: They're like, we don't worry, guys, We're just here to
- 32:22Speaker 2: do a little routine check off and make sure everybody's good,
- 32:26Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Flora starts hollering that they're
- 32:29Speaker 2: actually going to be rounded up and killed, but a
- 32:31Speaker 2: German soldier just grabs him by the face and is like,
- 32:34Speaker 2: I'm gonna kill this one first. So at this point
- 32:36Speaker 2: everyone in town is being rounded up, papers are being checked,
- 32:39Speaker 2: some people are being beaten if they're I guess, resisting
- 32:43Speaker 2: or anything like that. A soldier clears out this big
- 32:45Speaker 2: empty barn or it's like a church barn building, I guess,
- 32:48Speaker 2: and they make every single person from town pack into
- 32:51Speaker 2: this building. And it is intense because everyone is packed
- 32:54Speaker 2: so tight. It's like shoulders shoulder, like crowd crushing each other.
- 32:58Speaker 2: You can see women, children getting crushed into the people
- 33:01Speaker 2: in front of them. It's wild. They have shepherds nipping
- 33:05Speaker 2: out the people like German shepherds. They're just going fucking
- 33:08Speaker 2: nuts at the end of their leashes and stuff. Anyone
- 33:11Speaker 2: that's resisting is being beaten up with rifles too, so
- 33:13Speaker 2: it's awful to see. We catch up with Fleora as
- 33:16Speaker 2: he's shoved in to this church building nearly last, and
- 33:21Speaker 2: then the doors are locked behind him, and it's really
- 33:24Speaker 2: claustrophobica at this point, Like now people are just like
- 33:27Speaker 2: smashing like left and right. It's like when you see
- 33:30Speaker 2: like the waves of people pushing at a big concert
- 33:33Speaker 2: and you can just see the people in the middle
- 33:36Speaker 2: have no control over where they're going. It's pure chaos.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Everyone's screaming, the children are screaming, trying to climb up
- 33:43Speaker 2: the walls and shit. As soon as this guy gets
- 33:45Speaker 2: near a window, he gets fucking shot to death. So
- 33:48Speaker 2: everyone's clearly realizing how serious this all is. One soldier
- 33:53Speaker 2: shoots in the air to quiet everyone down, and he
- 33:56Speaker 2: makes an announcement and tells them that if they want
- 33:58Speaker 2: to leave, they can, but they just have to leave
- 34:01Speaker 2: their kids behind and then they can go free. So
- 34:04Speaker 2: obviously no one does this. They all just start screaming.
- 34:07Speaker 2: But Fliora is waiting in there, and he's like, well,
- 34:12Speaker 2: I don't have any kids, I guess, so he climbs
- 34:14Speaker 2: out the window. He can't stand it anymore, so he
- 34:18Speaker 2: does get out of there. As soon as he jumps down,
- 34:20Speaker 2: a German soldier grabs him and walks him over to
- 34:22Speaker 2: the guy that's in charge. At this point, we get
- 34:25Speaker 2: a really close up look at Flora's face, and he
- 34:28Speaker 2: looks like he's about thirty years old at this point,
- 34:31Speaker 2: or like thirty years older than when the movie started,
- 34:33Speaker 2: so let's say forty four years old. At this point,
- 34:36Speaker 2: the camera cuts back over to the barn. A lady
- 34:38Speaker 2: crawls out with her child that looks to be about
- 34:41Speaker 2: four years old in her arms. As soon as she
- 34:44Speaker 2: gets out of the window, they drag her away by
- 34:46Speaker 2: the hair and launch the kid in through the window.
- 34:49Speaker 2: And it is wild how hard this kid gets tossed,
- 34:53Speaker 2: Like this kid looks legitimately like four years old, and
- 34:56Speaker 2: the dude, the like Nazi soldier actor, really just fucking
- 35:00Speaker 2: launches them back through the window hard as hell. And
- 35:03Speaker 2: I just hope they had someone on the other side
- 35:05Speaker 2: that was prepared for that, like ready to catch, because
- 35:07Speaker 2: god damn, it's wild. The soldiers that are just kind
- 35:11Speaker 2: of hanging out are having a great time though. They're
- 35:13Speaker 2: just cracking up, joking, drinking, playing music and so on,
- 35:17Speaker 2: like like they're just throwing a little party, like an
- 35:21Speaker 2: impromptu a party or something like a show a hoedown
- 35:25Speaker 2: at this town or whatever. And then shortly after that though,
- 35:28Speaker 2: they just start launching grenades I think into the barn,
- 35:32Speaker 2: or like small explosives and rugs that are soaked in petrol.
- 35:36Speaker 2: So the main Nazi we just see him with a
- 35:39Speaker 2: little chinchilla on his shoulder. I don't know why I
- 35:42Speaker 2: wrote that down. It was just a little a little
- 35:44Speaker 2: note that stood out to me. It's like a little
- 35:46Speaker 2: chin chill is sitting on his shoulder and I was like, well,
- 35:49Speaker 2: hopefully they don't kill the fucking chin chilla and they don't.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Don't worry. I mean, it doesn't make it any better
- 35:55Speaker 2: that they killed the fucking cow and the birds and
- 35:57Speaker 2: shit like that, but you know, the chinchill survives this shoot.
- 36:01Speaker 2: They start launching a ton of like Moltov cocktails into
- 36:05Speaker 2: the barn and you can just hear everyone screaming while
- 36:07Speaker 2: the doors are being like rattled hard as hell with
- 36:09Speaker 2: people trying to get out. After a little while, someone
- 36:12Speaker 2: gives the order to fire, and the whole squad just
- 36:14Speaker 2: starts unloading on the building like machine gun fire from
- 36:19Speaker 2: every single soldier basically just coming at this building.
- 36:22Speaker 1: To finish it off.
- 36:23Speaker 2: They pull out the flamethrowers and they just burn the
- 36:25Speaker 2: rest of the barn down and hit it with more cocktails.
- 36:28Speaker 2: So yeah, it's wild the way that this scene goes
- 36:34Speaker 2: from what seems like a routine stop that is obviously
- 36:37Speaker 2: going to be tense just because of what's going on
- 36:41Speaker 2: right now, but you know, fairly calm, like everyone seems calm.
- 36:46Speaker 2: There's i don't know, just seems like they're coming in
- 36:51Speaker 2: for like this routine checkup or something. And it goes
- 36:55Speaker 2: from that to everyone being massacred is one of the
- 36:58Speaker 2: scariest things ever. And it's like a long shot almost
- 37:02Speaker 2: like it doesn't feel like there's this big time lapse
- 37:04Speaker 2: where like the Nazis have been there for a long
- 37:06Speaker 2: time and they're like, you know, escalating things, or like
- 37:10Speaker 2: the situation's ramping up is just straight like this is
- 37:13Speaker 2: just business as usual. We're just gonna round you up now.
- 37:16Speaker 2: We're gonna be chilling playing the fucking kazoo over here
- 37:20Speaker 2: while we're burning you guys alive. And Fleora is just
- 37:23Speaker 2: watching the rest of the Nazis burn down the whole
- 37:25Speaker 2: town as they're getting ready to leave, but before they leave,
- 37:30Speaker 2: the photography department grabs lee Or and holds them at
- 37:33Speaker 2: gunpoint in front of the burnt down barn to take
- 37:35Speaker 2: a picture with some of the other soldiers that have
- 37:38Speaker 2: a gun pressed against his head. After they get the photo,
- 37:42Speaker 2: they just drop him and leave and he collapses on
- 37:44Speaker 2: the floor, just completely unconscious. At this point, after the
- 37:48Speaker 2: rest of the soldiers leave, we see that the lady
- 37:51Speaker 2: that was drug away by her hair is loaded into
- 37:53Speaker 2: a truck full of dudes to be gang raped, and
- 37:57Speaker 2: I guess this was pretty common during all of these
- 38:00Speaker 2: village burning So it's something where it's like it's implied,
- 38:04Speaker 2: but when you look into the history of what was
- 38:06Speaker 2: going on here and a scene that happens here in
- 38:08Speaker 2: a second, this was I guess more common even than
- 38:12Speaker 2: what they show here. Like from what I was seeing
- 38:16Speaker 2: and reading about, it was just like, oh, they would
- 38:20Speaker 2: take one woman, they would pretty much like separate all
- 38:24Speaker 2: the women and rape all of them and stuff like that.
- 38:28Speaker 2: They also dragged this really old lady outside with like
- 38:31Speaker 2: her bed and sheets and everything, and they just leave
- 38:33Speaker 2: her there in the middle of the town while all
- 38:35Speaker 2: the buildings are burning around her, and they're just like,
- 38:37Speaker 2: all right, see lady, see you later, lady, good luck,
- 38:41Speaker 2: you know, And the next scene cuts to Flora. He's
- 38:44Speaker 2: back up walking through the woods. He comes across one
- 38:46Speaker 2: of the Nazi vehicles that has been crashed. It seems
- 38:50Speaker 2: like some of the At first, I was like, oh, damn,
- 38:52Speaker 2: maybe they you know, blew a tire and crashed into
- 38:55Speaker 2: a tree or who knows what happened, But we see
- 38:58Speaker 2: that the resistance must have been able to ambush these
- 39:02Speaker 2: Nazis that burn down this town as they were leaving,
- 39:04Speaker 2: Flora grabs some gauze and goes back to where he
- 39:07Speaker 2: met the farmer with the horse earlier. He finds his rifle,
- 39:10Speaker 2: picks it back up, and he tapes the stock of
- 39:12Speaker 2: it back together because it got broken during all the
- 39:17Speaker 2: cow scene. Basically, there's some whistling noises behind Flora, and
- 39:21Speaker 2: he turns around to see that the lady that was
- 39:23Speaker 2: gang rape she's walking back up to the village with
- 39:26Speaker 2: no pants on and just has like blood pouring out
- 39:29Speaker 2: of her nose and mouth, and her legs are completely
- 39:32Speaker 2: covered in blood. Yeah, we see the leader of the
- 39:36Speaker 2: resistance looking at Flora, and one of them has a
- 39:39Speaker 2: hold of that little chinchilla. But luckily he's nice to
- 39:43Speaker 2: the chin chilla. He's just kind of like holding it.
- 39:45Speaker 2: But I think it's just to show you like they
- 39:47Speaker 2: got all these damn Nazis, or at least like most
- 39:49Speaker 2: of them, you know what I mean, A big portion
- 39:52Speaker 2: of the Nazis that were burning down this village, they
- 39:54Speaker 2: were able to take over and probably kill most of them,
- 39:58Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Flora, He grabs a can
- 40:01Speaker 2: of gas. He heads over to where everyone is like
- 40:03Speaker 2: gathered around the surviving Nazis and like Nazi sympathizers are
- 40:08Speaker 2: surrounded by about one hundred resistance fighters at this point,
- 40:12Speaker 2: so they're completely outnumbered out gunned. Some of the Nazis, like,
- 40:15Speaker 2: I think it's more of like the Allies or whatever,
- 40:19Speaker 2: like the Soviet ally people. They're like kind of piping
- 40:22Speaker 2: up and saying like, hey, we were just following orders.
- 40:25Speaker 2: We weren't the ones that lit the fire. We're basically
- 40:27Speaker 2: just here and they tell us what to do. We
- 40:29Speaker 2: actually haven't really even hurt anybody, And they're just kind
- 40:32Speaker 2: of pleading for their lives in this way where they're like,
- 40:35Speaker 2: we don't really have a hand in what's going on
- 40:37Speaker 2: here directly, you know what I'm saying. We're just like,
- 40:40Speaker 2: you know, we're just we're just here, you know, no,
- 40:43Speaker 2: I'm saying. But then this younger soldier he speaks up
- 40:46Speaker 2: and he starts like kind of braiding them for being cowards.
- 40:49Speaker 2: He's like, yeah, it was me that gave the order
- 40:51Speaker 2: to leave the kids in the barn and the rest
- 40:55Speaker 2: could leave, And then he makes the translator tell them
- 40:58Speaker 2: that and tell them that he was trying to get
- 41:00Speaker 2: rid of all the kids so that their whole like
- 41:03Speaker 2: existence would end there like their whole He's like, you
- 41:06Speaker 2: guys don't deserve to live and breed and stuff like that.
- 41:11Speaker 2: And the translator he's like, hey, I'm not German, yo,
- 41:15Speaker 2: I'm Soviet. Please let me go. And there flew or
- 41:18Speaker 2: hands that guy that cant of gas, and the leader
- 41:20Speaker 2: of the resistance is kind of like, all right, yeah,
- 41:21Speaker 2: if you think they should die so bad, why don't
- 41:23Speaker 2: you fucking kill him? So this guy's like hell yeah,
- 41:25Speaker 2: and he starts dousing the Nazis and gas. But before
- 41:28Speaker 2: they like, this guy runs up with a torch and
- 41:31Speaker 2: before they can light it, a few resistance members step
- 41:34Speaker 2: forward and just start blasting all of them. So they
- 41:36Speaker 2: just shoot them all to death. I don't think they
- 41:37Speaker 2: really wanted to. Actually, I'm sure some of them probably
- 41:41Speaker 2: wanted to watch him burn, but I feel like the
- 41:42Speaker 2: ones that were in charge probably didn't really want to.
- 41:46Speaker 2: You know, watch people burn. That's just an awful thing to.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Do, good or bad.
- 41:50Speaker 2: I'm sure it probably wondn't sit well with you, the
- 41:53Speaker 2: memory of seeing someone burn alive at your hands, you
- 41:57Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. They didn't want to sink to
- 41:59Speaker 2: their level in a way, but still wanted to kill them.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Does that make sense? I guess.
- 42:03Speaker 2: After this, we get some real footage from concentration camps
- 42:06Speaker 2: that cuts back to a closeup of Fleora's face. He
- 42:10Speaker 2: walks over to a picture that's lying in a puddle
- 42:12Speaker 2: and we see that it's a framed photo of Hitler.
- 42:14Speaker 2: He pulls his rifle out and for the first time,
- 42:16Speaker 2: he shoots his rifle into this picture, and he starts
- 42:20Speaker 2: shooting it over and over again, and every time he does,
- 42:23Speaker 2: we kind of get this video footage from World War Two,
- 42:26Speaker 2: like real footage from World War Two and real footage
- 42:28Speaker 2: of like Hitler doing speeches and stuff like that. The
- 42:31Speaker 2: pictures keep reversing, like the World War Two is basically
- 42:35Speaker 2: playing in reverse order, and it keeps doing this every
- 42:39Speaker 2: time he shoots his gun into the picture, until we
- 42:42Speaker 2: see Hitler as like a little boy in school, and
- 42:45Speaker 2: eventually until he's a little baby sitting on his mother's lap.
- 42:49Speaker 2: And when this happens, Fleora can't shoot the picture anymore.
- 42:52Speaker 2: I think it's just to resemble again, like not sinking
- 42:56Speaker 2: to that level, like he just witnessed them kill a
- 42:58Speaker 2: bunch of kids, and he's just like, can't do it. Himself,
- 43:03Speaker 2: even if it is Hitler or whatever. A couple of
- 43:05Speaker 2: tears fall from his eyes and Flora has just just
- 43:09Speaker 2: has the perfect thousand yard stare on his face. After that,
- 43:13Speaker 2: a title card pops up that says six hundred and
- 43:16Speaker 2: twenty eight Belarussian villages were burnt to the ground with
- 43:19Speaker 2: all of their inhabitants. We cut back to the resistance
- 43:22Speaker 2: squad marching up. Flora runs up, runs up and joins them,
- 43:27Speaker 2: and then we get the credits. Oh man, So that
- 43:32Speaker 2: is a movie worth seeing if you want to watch
- 43:34Speaker 2: the unflinching horrors of war from this place and time.
- 43:37Speaker 2: I don't know what else to say about it. Really,
- 43:40Speaker 2: as great as some of these movies have been, for
- 43:42Speaker 2: this bummer movie marathon, I'm pretty.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Glad that it's over.
- 43:46Speaker 2: It has not been really any fun at all. Like
- 43:50Speaker 2: the first movie, what was it? Speak No Evil? That
- 43:54Speaker 2: was probably the most fun, and that movie is like
- 43:56Speaker 2: frustrating as fuck too, But the rest of these have
- 43:59Speaker 2: just been like gup paunches.
- 44:03Speaker 1: I did.
- 44:04Speaker 2: I enjoyed this movie about as much as you're supposed
- 44:06Speaker 2: to the acting, the way it looks, the sound is
- 44:10Speaker 2: all really great. The story hits hard and it's very dark,
- 44:14Speaker 2: so you know, it's just one of those that if
- 44:17Speaker 2: you're gonna see it, you know you might as well
- 44:21Speaker 2: be ready for what you're getting into. I'd give it
- 44:23Speaker 2: four out of five time Traveling Rifles. Next week we're
- 44:28Speaker 2: getting back into the Scream franchise with Scream six. Without
- 44:31Speaker 2: a rewatch, this is my least favorite Scream movie of
- 44:34Speaker 2: all time. We're gonna see if that changes. We'll find
- 44:38Speaker 2: out next week February Scream seven is coming out, so
- 44:41Speaker 2: that'll put a cap on the Scream franchise for now.
- 44:44Speaker 2: So maybe after that we'll do some rankings. Leading up
- 44:47Speaker 2: to that the Scream seven release, I'm sure I'll be
- 44:50Speaker 2: putting out some more Scream shit, so be on the
- 44:52Speaker 2: lookout for more Scream shit. Thanks for listening.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Goodn jo I no no, I know my mamma of
- 46:03Speaker 3: fer ba Udio
