- 0:16Speaker 2: Skyline Enterprises seen a one hundred and twelve percent jump
- 0:19Speaker 2: of net profits, so that's all good. Revenues up fifteen percent.
- 0:21Speaker 2: QUEENSTOWND looks like it's off and running. Jeff McDonald is
- 0:24Speaker 2: the Skyline Enterprise, as Boss anders with us. Jeff, very
- 0:27Speaker 2: good morning to you.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Good morning Mike.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Now, just to explain, you are in multiple markets around
- 0:32Speaker 2: the world, interesting markets, and we've talked about that before.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Are you seeing growth everywhere as tourism booming? In other words?
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yeah, look, good question. I think most of the eight
- 0:41Speaker 3: markets are and have really picked up, you know, long
- 0:45Speaker 3: since COVID and doing very very well. I think the
- 0:47Speaker 3: New Zealand sites have performed particularly well. In Queenstown probably
- 0:51Speaker 3: the standout.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So what's happened there? Because Tourism Holdings the other day
- 0:56Speaker 2: suddenly came out with an upgrade as well and they said, oh,
- 0:58Speaker 2: look we're seeing all these bookings both domestically and from
- 1:01Speaker 2: North America. So is there some sort of thing going
- 1:03Speaker 2: on with tourism at the moment.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Look, I think you know, the middle east of it
- 1:08Speaker 3: a factor in terms of where people are thinking about
- 1:10Speaker 3: traveling to from an international perspective. So we've probably had
- 1:13Speaker 3: stronger shoulder seasons than we've seen. You know, the summer
- 1:15Speaker 3: peaks and winter peaks always seem to take care of themselves.
- 1:18Speaker 3: But it's filling those troughs and which has been the difference.
- 1:22Speaker 3: And I think, you know, we are getting definitely more
- 1:24Speaker 3: Americans coming through.
- 1:25Speaker 2: And how much of it it's about the economy and because
- 1:29Speaker 2: losing in gondola or jumping on the gondola is not cheap,
- 1:32Speaker 2: so obviously got to feel reasonably good about life to
- 1:35Speaker 2: you do it.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah, look, I think so, although you know, having said that,
- 1:39Speaker 3: I think going up to queenstun and jumping under gone
- 1:42Speaker 3: that's probably more oriented to the average family than say
- 1:45Speaker 3: taking this guide over or doing a bungee jump or
- 1:47Speaker 3: something like that. So whilst queen sounds increasingly getting a
- 1:50Speaker 3: reputation as an expensive town, I think it still sort
- 1:54Speaker 3: of sits in that middle tier of things that the
- 1:57Speaker 3: family can can get to him to do.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Okay, is there a contrast between Queenstown and Road A
- 2:01Speaker 2: RUA in terms of performance?
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yeah? Absolutely there is, you know it's the international factor
- 2:07Speaker 3: is the big thing for Queenstown of Australia, just across
- 2:10Speaker 3: the ditch and any point in time, that's what forty
- 2:12Speaker 3: percent of the population of Australian here in town, whereas
- 2:15Speaker 3: Rotora is quite a midweek and that's much more of
- 2:19Speaker 3: a domestic sort of destination.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Okay, So would it be fair to say then Roda
- 2:23Speaker 2: reflects the domestic economy more than Queenstown does, which is
- 2:26Speaker 2: driven by the international economy.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's absolutely correct.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Okay. What about more broadly, Singapore, Canada, South Korea, Malaysia?
- 2:34Speaker 2: Are they all doing well in that sense roughly at
- 2:36Speaker 2: the same level or are the disparities there.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Singapore has been doing very very well. Mcquhir Long has
- 2:42Speaker 3: been doing okay, and one of the Korean sights has
- 2:44Speaker 3: been doing pretty well. We have one site, the original
- 2:47Speaker 3: site in Creer that is surrounded by a few copy
- 2:50Speaker 3: generic sites that struggled a bit more, but the others
- 2:53Speaker 3: have been doing well. In Singapore in particular is very
- 2:56Speaker 3: very strong though it's a hub asi, you know, Mike.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Lots of international guests going through there, they stop off
- 3:02Speaker 3: one or two days, you know, heading over to Sintos
- 3:05Speaker 3: Island to go. Losing is an easy thing to do,
- 3:07Speaker 3: so has been performing well.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Also, how do you explain or encapsulate verbally what has
- 3:13Speaker 2: happened post COVID to this experiential thing that we all
- 3:15Speaker 2: seem to be on. It doesn't matter what its cost
- 3:17Speaker 2: to get on a plane. We will do it, are
- 3:20Speaker 2: doing it and seemingly will do it forever.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's exactly it. I think, you know, we will
- 3:25Speaker 3: talk about this that COVID taught us that things can change,
- 3:29Speaker 3: and I think there's been a sort of a revenge
- 3:32Speaker 3: or rebound tourism that's gone on at New Zealand's always
- 3:36Speaker 3: been an attractive destination. The other thing that's happened, I think,
- 3:38Speaker 3: you know, is the government has loosened the strings in
- 3:43Speaker 3: terms of visas to Australia for certain nationalities and it's
- 3:45Speaker 3: made it easier for them to come to Australia and
- 3:48Speaker 3: then on to New Zealand. So queens sounds certainly benefited
- 3:51Speaker 3: from that, I would say. I think Queenstown there's a
- 3:56Speaker 3: real concern that we kill the goose that lays of
- 3:59Speaker 3: golden egg there in terms of the volume of people
- 4:02Speaker 3: coming through there and just infrastructure not keeping up.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I'm not there, but I mean, how do you stop
- 4:09Speaker 2: and what do you stand at the gate at the
- 4:10Speaker 2: airport and say, sorry, you can't come in. No one's
- 4:12Speaker 2: doing that, are they.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Well, it's it's a challenge and you know, I'm not
- 4:16Speaker 3: sure how long since you've been here. But the problem
- 4:19Speaker 3: we have is obviously roading infrastructure is the big one,
- 4:23Speaker 3: but fast tracking houses on top of it is kind
- 4:27Speaker 3: of compounding the problem. So everyone understands it's a it's
- 4:30Speaker 3: a difficult fix, but then you know there needs to
- 4:34Speaker 3: be some really measured investment in thinking about.
- 4:37Speaker 2: It wise words, Jeff, appreciate the insight and congratulations on
- 4:40Speaker 2: all your success. Jeff McDonald, who is the Skyline Enterprise's CEO.
