- 0:02Speaker 1: Radio Radio Radio coms, a myth and bullshit Radio phonic novella.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Local Radio hosted by Mala La Locomotives. Welcome back to
- 0:25Speaker 1: local Radio. Welcome back. This is Mala and this is
- 0:28Speaker 1: the same and we are last Look Radio Radio phonic novella.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us. Thank you for tuning in
- 0:34Speaker 1: once again. Local Radio is a podcast archiving the brilliance
- 0:38Speaker 1: and legacies of women and fans of color. Thank you
- 0:41Speaker 1: so much for tuning in to We didn't I know
- 0:50Speaker 1: it's been it's been a long journey. It's in a world.
- 0:54Speaker 1: We are excited, exhausted, relieved, happy, like just everything felted.
- 1:00Speaker 1: We are so happy right now. Yes, why are we happy?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Because well, a week ago from yesterday, from last Friday,
- 1:08Speaker 1: we had our very first love a podcast party and
- 1:12Speaker 1: oh my god, if you were there, you know that
- 1:15Speaker 1: it was amazing. It was everything it was like exceeded
- 1:19Speaker 1: my expectations. It was like everything went so smoothly, like
- 1:24Speaker 1: everything was just like on brand, on point. Everything was.
- 1:28Speaker 1: My mind was blown. Let's talk about it, like from
- 1:31Speaker 1: the beginning, Okay, from the beginning, I want to like
- 1:33Speaker 1: shout out ourselves because MoMA and I had put so
- 1:37Speaker 1: much work into this, like weeks in advance, and if
- 1:39Speaker 1: you know, if you know us, you know that we're
- 1:41Speaker 1: always running around were procrastinators, like we're doing things the day, yes, really,
- 1:46Speaker 1: but this time around we were like, no, like this
- 1:48Speaker 1: needs to be like a one, like an amazing production.
- 1:52Speaker 1: So like the day of actually, like Mom and I
- 1:55Speaker 1: started the day really early and everything was already done,
- 1:58Speaker 1: like we had finished everything. So we got to the
- 2:01Speaker 1: venue at five pm and like started set up and
- 2:04Speaker 1: everything was just on schedule. And I'm really proud of
- 2:07Speaker 1: us for that. I'm really proud of us, and I'm
- 2:09Speaker 1: really proud of like our team that worked with us.
- 2:12Speaker 1: So we had like our squad of just like home
- 2:14Speaker 1: girls are friends that we've known for years that we
- 2:19Speaker 1: that knew us before we did anything that we grew
- 2:22Speaker 1: up with. So like more specifically, um, like my sister
- 2:25Speaker 1: was our stage manager, and she helped to time the
- 2:28Speaker 1: live show and make sure that like the DJ and
- 2:31Speaker 1: us and the projector the visuals, you know, everything was
- 2:35Speaker 1: lined up according to plan. She also like puts Mala
- 2:37Speaker 1: in check, which is hilarious for me to see because
- 2:40Speaker 1: usually it's me tell them you witness you witnessed my
- 2:44Speaker 1: dynamic with my sister. It's so funny because so Ivan
- 2:47Speaker 1: is the younger sister eleven months, so not that much younger,
- 2:52Speaker 1: but she's still the younger sister, and so to see
- 2:55Speaker 1: like Mala just like she kind of like Mala kind
- 2:58Speaker 1: of spirals in a way and not in a bad way,
- 3:00Speaker 1: but she has like so many ideas that she'll go
- 3:02Speaker 1: off on a tangent and we'll have to bring her back.
- 3:05Speaker 1: So to see someone else do it and be like, Okay, MoMA,
- 3:07Speaker 1: but we need to actually focus on this right now.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, thank you for being our stage manager.
- 3:14Speaker 1: This makes my job Alatia, thank you much. I like
- 3:18Speaker 1: joke about it to about it, but I do need
- 3:20Speaker 1: a handler. I do because I do. I have so
- 3:23Speaker 1: many ideas. It's like something oh my god, oh like
- 3:26Speaker 1: they tend to like be ideas that work they worked with.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'm like, Mama, we need to finish this first and
- 3:31Speaker 1: then we can go there one at a time. So
- 3:33Speaker 1: to have someone else see it and be like, okay, girl,
- 3:35Speaker 1: bring it back. We gotta keep up going with the rehearsal.
- 3:37Speaker 1: We gotta go, go, go go. Yes, So Evan's stage
- 3:40Speaker 1: managed and she did, Thank you an amazing job. Thank you,
- 3:44Speaker 1: Evan did a great job. My friend Monica that I
- 3:47Speaker 1: have known since the eighth grade, she was our mistress
- 3:49Speaker 1: of ceremonies and she introduced us. She did an amazing job.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And I love that part because what we did for
- 3:54Speaker 1: our intro was we rewrote the Powerpuff Girls intro and
- 3:58Speaker 1: we're not going to share it because you need to
- 3:59Speaker 1: go to the party. The next one there will be more. Yes,
- 4:02Speaker 1: if you want to see the live show, you need
- 4:03Speaker 1: to come to the live show basically. Basically, So that
- 4:06Speaker 1: was Monica. Who else was helping us? So my high
- 4:09Speaker 1: school well, my best friend from high school, um, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: she's still a really good friend of mine. Nancy. She
- 4:14Speaker 1: helped with the merchandise, and I was really happy because
- 4:17Speaker 1: she's like she actually helped with the merchandise. At our
- 4:19Speaker 1: one year anniversary. We had like a tiny, tiny little
- 4:21Speaker 1: table and we didn't really like we didn't really expect
- 4:24Speaker 1: people to be buying stuff, and like she was able
- 4:27Speaker 1: to manage everything. So I like asked her if she
- 4:29Speaker 1: could help us again, and she did and she did
- 4:31Speaker 1: a great job. She was also there at the merch
- 4:33Speaker 1: table with Melissa, our friend, her friend Melissa worked the
- 4:36Speaker 1: door and worked at the merge table along with We
- 4:39Speaker 1: also had Laney and Liz, my friends from college, my
- 4:42Speaker 1: tough girls, my jumbos um and then we had obviously
- 4:46Speaker 1: Sizzle DJ Sizzle who was like our house DJ, DJ
- 4:50Speaker 1: Zooty who also played and who brought the house down.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And everybody loved the DJ so much like our DJs.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Fucking killed it that party, like everyone was on their
- 4:59Speaker 1: feet dance seeing we were taking shots. We were really partying,
- 5:02Speaker 1: like we packed the place too. It was full. We
- 5:05Speaker 1: had our specialty cocktails which were delicious and so cute.
- 5:09Speaker 1: They were so cute. We had little like glittery pink
- 5:12Speaker 1: stirs and um if you order like there was and
- 5:17Speaker 1: La Mammy and the drinks were delicious. The bartender was amazing.
- 5:21Speaker 1: We had our Step and Repeat. We had photos. Priscilla
- 5:25Speaker 1: of La Junta took our photos, so all those nice
- 5:28Speaker 1: photos that you saw on the Instagram, that was all Priscilla,
- 5:31Speaker 1: So thank you so much. Everything was just like wow.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Our guests Curly and Maya. Curly and Maya were amazing.
- 5:38Speaker 1: They played with us on stage. It was so funny
- 5:40Speaker 1: because we didn't necessarily prep them for what they were doing.
- 5:43Speaker 1: When they got there, we told them what they were
- 5:45Speaker 1: going to do, but they were like, oh, we thought
- 5:47Speaker 1: we were going to be here for an interview. Yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 1: so for you know, we did tape the entire live show,
- 5:53Speaker 1: so we are going to put it out later on
- 5:55Speaker 1: local Landia on the YouTube, right, But basically so that
- 5:58Speaker 1: you get an idea we want, we we did a
- 6:01Speaker 1: live podcast, but it wasn't just an interview based like
- 6:04Speaker 1: we usually do when we put out our audio on
- 6:06Speaker 1: our iTunes and everything. Our idea was like, let's bring
- 6:09Speaker 1: back like the freaking like variety show, Like let's do
- 6:12Speaker 1: a mashup of like Vintage Share Variety, our meets Saboo,
- 6:16Speaker 1: them meets us and make it like now. And it
- 6:19Speaker 1: was super fun and like people got it, like our
- 6:22Speaker 1: listeners and people in attendance. They came up to us
- 6:24Speaker 1: afterwards they were like, oh, so it's like a game
- 6:26Speaker 1: show like a variety show. We're like, yes, so it
- 6:28Speaker 1: was really fun. It were exactly like a variety show.
- 6:32Speaker 1: It was amazing. We had matching dresses essentially with our
- 6:37Speaker 1: own you know, our a little like yeah, which I like, Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: it was cute. Who else do we need to think
- 6:42Speaker 1: who else was there, um, Curly Maya, I mean Civic
- 6:46Speaker 1: Center Studios. Of course, Civic Center to let us host
- 6:49Speaker 1: our event there and it was the perfect space for it.
- 6:51Speaker 1: It was such a good space. Um, just to mean
- 6:54Speaker 1: all of our locomotives that went out, thank you all
- 6:57Speaker 1: for being there. There were other podcasts they were there,
- 6:59Speaker 1: like shout out a fit Cheese Man and not doing it,
- 7:02Speaker 1: We love them was there was also there. Shout out
- 7:09Speaker 1: to them. Thank you all the podcasters who showed up,
- 7:11Speaker 1: who came through. Oh my god, mom, Luis he was there,
- 7:16Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you. Bou also has a podcast called
- 7:18Speaker 1: no Vemos and swap me Um. It was really great
- 7:21Speaker 1: to see him and Sizzle and Norms have their own podcasts. Yes,
- 7:24Speaker 1: they do what's it called again? And they record here. Yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Um so yeah, it was a really fun night our
- 7:33Speaker 1: first podcast party in live show. We want to do more. Honestly,
- 7:37Speaker 1: it was the place to be it really was it?
- 7:39Speaker 1: Really you missed out? I'm sorry? Yeah. Also, I mean
- 7:42Speaker 1: I don't think he listens to my budimo might He
- 7:47Speaker 1: actually designed our snapchat um filter for us. We had
- 7:50Speaker 1: a snapshot filter and everything, so if you got to
- 7:52Speaker 1: see it and you want them for if you want
- 7:54Speaker 1: to filter for either like your graduation party, something that
- 7:57Speaker 1: you're doing, you're an event, a wedding, whatever, let me
- 8:00Speaker 1: know I can put you in contact with him. Yes,
- 8:05Speaker 1: all right, good times, good fucking time. I'm happy with
- 8:09Speaker 1: the way everything turned out. It was perfect. It was
- 8:11Speaker 1: so great, and we have some other things coming up well. Actually,
- 8:15Speaker 1: so it's by the time this episode is published already
- 8:18Speaker 1: we will have had um La Junta l As Memorial
- 8:22Speaker 1: Day we hosted. It was a beautiful time. We always
- 8:28Speaker 1: love lave working with them. That was one of our
- 8:33Speaker 1: first parties that we ever host. Our first event ever
- 8:35Speaker 1: that we ever hosted was in seventeen and it was
- 8:38Speaker 1: the Memorial DA So it's a year later. We've come
- 8:41Speaker 1: a long way, and we do give like Lahunta a
- 8:44Speaker 1: lot of credit, like they've they've done a lot of
- 8:47Speaker 1: mentoring for us as far as this whole party world
- 8:50Speaker 1: and the party yes, and the fact that they were
- 8:53Speaker 1: the first, Like David, he was the first person to
- 8:56Speaker 1: like hit us up and be like, hey, do you
- 8:57Speaker 1: want to host this party? And we were like do
- 8:59Speaker 1: we do that? Like we're at we're a podcast, do
- 9:02Speaker 1: we host parties, right, but they saw something in us
- 9:06Speaker 1: and it definitely planted the seed that, oh, we can
- 9:08Speaker 1: do more than you know just record as you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: like we like to host workshops. We like to go
- 9:13Speaker 1: to university campuses and like host workshops. We like we
- 9:16Speaker 1: can do keynotes, we can host parties, we can produce
- 9:19Speaker 1: our own live show. Like there's so much that we
- 9:21Speaker 1: can do because we love to do it. We love
- 9:23Speaker 1: to do it. It's fun for it and I think
- 9:24Speaker 1: that our listeners love it because they go yeah, because
- 9:27Speaker 1: I think we all have a good time and the listeners, like,
- 9:29Speaker 1: we have some listeners that have consistently come to a
- 9:32Speaker 1: lot of our events. Steph Stephanie, thank you for being there.
- 9:36Speaker 1: She comes back to a lot of people so much,
- 9:38Speaker 1: very supportive. Hobby has been out to a bunch of
- 9:41Speaker 1: things already, So thank you Hobby. Who else are USC Girl?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Are USC Girl? Karen's shout out Karen, the other Betas,
- 9:51Speaker 1: the Betas they brought their whole crews were out and
- 9:55Speaker 1: I loved it. It was very bad. It was super cute.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So thank you all for being there being there, lazy listeners.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I also want to plug um. We got our pins.
- 10:06Speaker 1: We got our I'm wearing. I'm wearing a couple right now.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I'm like, should we put it up to the camera maybe?
- 10:12Speaker 1: Can you let me try? Okay, well I'll describe them
- 10:15Speaker 1: while you do that. Okay, so um, thank you too, Adrianna.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Adrianna has designed our logo, she has designed our flyers,
- 10:22Speaker 1: and she also designed our pins. And they're super cute
- 10:26Speaker 1: if you haven't seen them on the Instagram. The mala um.
- 10:29Speaker 1: The Mala pin is a headphone and it has a
- 10:32Speaker 1: rose and it says mala in gold and then um.
- 10:36Speaker 1: The Diosa pin is a mic like an old school
- 10:39Speaker 1: like retro looking mike and it says diosa on it
- 10:42Speaker 1: and it's super cute. I love the way they came
- 10:44Speaker 1: out there an inch. There are twelve dollars each. We
- 10:47Speaker 1: have a very limited amount. Um. We're shipping them, not
- 10:52Speaker 1: this we're supposed shipping this weekend, but because of the
- 10:54Speaker 1: holiday long holiday, like most likely we'll be shipping them
- 10:56Speaker 1: out on Tuesday. So they ordered, um, you'll be getting
- 10:59Speaker 1: yours next week in the May all and if you
- 11:00Speaker 1: want to place your order, you know you know where
- 11:03Speaker 1: to find us. We're on Venmo. Go to the instagram
- 11:07Speaker 1: all of that, all the infos on there. So we
- 11:10Speaker 1: have a really fun Well we have another event coming
- 11:13Speaker 1: up that we're gonna be at. There's a Latina Conference
- 11:16Speaker 1: UM that the rest of the information escapes me that
- 11:19Speaker 1: we're going to be participating in UM and it's another
- 11:22Speaker 1: one of the council members, if you recall, the councilwoman
- 11:26Speaker 1: Narie Martinez had us for her Women's History Month in
- 11:29Speaker 1: her words event and so another council person has invited us.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So the office of council Member Current Price UM, which
- 11:35Speaker 1: represents South l a UM, invited us to be a
- 11:38Speaker 1: part of their third annual Latina Conference and it's on Saturday,
- 11:42Speaker 1: June two, and it's going to be at l a
- 11:45Speaker 1: Trade Sech College, which is in the downtown. It's downtown
- 11:50Speaker 1: in its Downwntown, it's off of Washington. Yeah. Yeah, I've
- 11:52Speaker 1: been there a few times and up. Yeah. So we're
- 11:54Speaker 1: gonna be actually hosting in the morning. Well, when we
- 11:57Speaker 1: have more information, will post it, but we're gonna be
- 11:59Speaker 1: hosting a Latin x tech UM intro to podcasting workshop. Yes,
- 12:05Speaker 1: so if you're interested or if you have students, because
- 12:08Speaker 1: this is for Latin US for Latin us students. It's specific,
- 12:11Speaker 1: it's um like youth the part that we're we're going
- 12:15Speaker 1: to be a part of his youth centered. But of
- 12:17Speaker 1: course it's open to like all constituents, all residents, all
- 12:20Speaker 1: community members. So if you're interested, if you know folks
- 12:23Speaker 1: that are interested, pass the invot along to them. It's
- 12:25Speaker 1: going to be really fun. And I want to thank
- 12:27Speaker 1: Genevieve for reaching out to us from the council member's office. Yes,
- 12:30Speaker 1: thank you, Genevieve, Thank you so much, and thank you
- 12:33Speaker 1: to any and all of our listeners who have ever
- 12:34Speaker 1: brought us any sort of an opportunity like this, because
- 12:37Speaker 1: the workshops, the events, like our listeners asked us to
- 12:41Speaker 1: participate in these things, like so you know, we are
- 12:44Speaker 1: not like going out and like submitting our information and
- 12:47Speaker 1: asking to host these workshops, are asking to be involved
- 12:50Speaker 1: in these conferences. Every single thing has been a listener
- 12:53Speaker 1: has like asked us, you know what we like to
- 12:55Speaker 1: be involved. So our listeners like, we thank you so
- 12:58Speaker 1: much for thinking of us and invite us, you know,
- 13:00Speaker 1: to participate in these events. Yes, thank you so much.
- 13:03Speaker 1: We're so appreciative, we're so grateful. We love you so much.
- 13:08Speaker 1: This is like possible because of y'all. Just know that, like, yes,
- 13:12Speaker 1: we do the podcasting and the work behind it, but
- 13:14Speaker 1: like you, y'all motivated, like exists because of y'all. Um.
- 13:20Speaker 1: So I think this is a good time to transition
- 13:22Speaker 1: to go into our song break because we're going to
- 13:23Speaker 1: bring on Julio for the second half of the episode,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and he brought the song Bandilo by Anna Barbara and
- 13:30Speaker 1: I'm Julio. Just to give y'all a quick bio. He
- 13:33Speaker 1: is a co founder of Dreams Dreamers, a drift dot com,
- 13:36Speaker 1: and project manager for Culture Strike. Shout out to Fabian Riez,
- 13:39Speaker 1: She's the founder of that and his status as an
- 13:42Speaker 1: undocumented queer artivist has fueled the content for of his
- 13:46Speaker 1: visual art, which depict key individuals and moments of the
- 13:49Speaker 1: Dream Act and migrant rights movement. He's done amazing work.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I'm positive that y'all have seen his art, his um
- 13:57Speaker 1: his portraits are so amazing, His visual art is amazing.
- 14:01Speaker 1: So we're super excited to have him on the second
- 14:03Speaker 1: half of the episode. And you might have seen Julio
- 14:05Speaker 1: Salgado um. In July, Salagado and other undocumented activists joined
- 14:10Speaker 1: tous Antonio Vargas on the cover of Time magazine. So
- 14:13Speaker 1: Julio has really been out there doing it. Um So.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Salgado graduated from cal State Long Beach UM and studied journalism.
- 14:22Speaker 1: So if you want to see more of Julio's artwork,
- 14:24Speaker 1: you can go to Julio Salgado art dot com. And
- 14:27Speaker 1: Julio is going to talk more about his projects, Where
- 14:30Speaker 1: to see his work, where to support him after the
- 14:33Speaker 1: song break, Yes, and we're also quick plug. We're going
- 14:35Speaker 1: to be thoroughly discussing the campaign and movement called Bantaya
- 14:39Speaker 1: in Glusiva, which is sort of the reason, you know
- 14:43Speaker 1: why we were able to get in contact with Julio
- 14:45Speaker 1: and invite him in for an interview. So thank you,
- 14:47Speaker 1: thank you, Stay tuned and we'll be right back. And
- 15:00Speaker 1: and and and and and and and and and and
- 15:10Speaker 1: and and and and and and and and and ummmm
- 15:28Speaker 1: from from from of it and welcome back. And we
- 15:40Speaker 1: have the amazing here with us. Hi say hello, hello,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I'm when I start with thank you so much for
- 15:51Speaker 1: having me. I finally get to meet the people behind
- 15:55Speaker 1: those soothing voices I was just trying. They have like
- 15:58Speaker 1: such soothing voices some there on their podcast. I love it,
- 16:01Speaker 1: thank you, thank you for saying that. We're really really
- 16:05Speaker 1: excited to have you here, Julio. And already, like before
- 16:07Speaker 1: we started recording, we've already been talking so much ship
- 16:10Speaker 1: and much. I'm like, it's the microphone on I do that.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I so make sure like if Julio, your mom is
- 16:20Speaker 1: watching right, like, don't spill the free hold my parents.
- 16:25Speaker 1: The thing is, my parents are really not tech savvy
- 16:28Speaker 1: in that way. So for over a year and a
- 16:29Speaker 1: half or like, where do we listen to it? Where
- 16:31Speaker 1: do we go? Where do we listen to? I tuned Spotify?
- 16:36Speaker 1: You know the word because my dad is like obsessed
- 16:38Speaker 1: with Facebook, like like he like and so what he like.
- 16:42Speaker 1: It translates his stuff into Spanish, and sometimes it's not
- 16:47Speaker 1: the best translations, and one like sometimes I'll get like
- 16:49Speaker 1: a random texts, so I'm like, oh no, that's not
- 16:53Speaker 1: the right translation that what I'm meant to say is
- 16:55Speaker 1: so it could be dangerous when you're my grandma just
- 16:58Speaker 1: ding me on Facebook already already my grandma's like I
- 17:02Speaker 1: love my grandma, Yeah, but she's like hardcore, like Baptist
- 17:05Speaker 1: church core and like so I'm like, no, I don't
- 17:08Speaker 1: need to accept that I love your grandma. But Facebook,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you want to be able to talk your ship, yeah
- 17:14Speaker 1: and post or whatever. You know. What about I love
- 17:17Speaker 1: about Facebook is that I haven't really had to come
- 17:20Speaker 1: out to the rest of my family because clearly everything
- 17:23Speaker 1: I post is clearly like clearly so like, it's never
- 17:28Speaker 1: like I don't even I never had to come out
- 17:30Speaker 1: to my whole family and be like, guess what they're like,
- 17:32Speaker 1: you know it's yeah, yeah, so I don't. I'm not
- 17:35Speaker 1: sure if I'm I'm ready for my grandma to yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 1: but anyway, I'm going to Placestagram right Oh god, no, no,
- 17:42Speaker 1: it's over Instagram. I'm cool with my being Facebook friends
- 17:46Speaker 1: with my family, but not Instagram friends. Yeah, I'm not
- 17:50Speaker 1: that's too much. I had one of my my tps,
- 17:52Speaker 1: she did follow me on Instagram a long time ago.
- 17:54Speaker 1: When I had to block her, I just did. I
- 17:57Speaker 1: didn't even say anything about it. No, sorry, you don't
- 18:00Speaker 1: need to see you read you don't need to see it.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Like my niece I have like nieces now, and I'm like,
- 18:06Speaker 1: I don't need to know what my niece is doing.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I was just like, yeah, like and like I'm the
- 18:11Speaker 1: cool uncle, right, Like I'm like cool uncle or whatever.
- 18:15Speaker 1: But I'm just like it's not even about what they're doing,
- 18:17Speaker 1: which it's like I don't understand their language, Like I
- 18:20Speaker 1: you know, I thought I I had something coming with
- 18:23Speaker 1: fifteen year old teenage girls. No, I don't know the
- 18:26Speaker 1: different different languages. Yeah. I just went talking this weekend
- 18:29Speaker 1: in Vegas and I was in my family and they
- 18:32Speaker 1: were doing like all this like dances the youths were doing.
- 18:35Speaker 1: I was like, I'm about the dance I'm at the table,
- 18:38Speaker 1: was like, yeah, I'm not the youth dancing now that
- 18:44Speaker 1: they were doing I don't I forget what it was.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But then like what is it? The start playing like
- 18:49Speaker 1: we're going that My god, that's fun. That's all the youth,
- 18:55Speaker 1: the youth. Yeah, so we brought okay talk about how
- 19:00Speaker 1: Blulio came to be on our show today, to be
- 19:03Speaker 1: on look At. I mean we've on it honestly and
- 19:05Speaker 1: obviously been admiring you from AFAR for many years, many
- 19:10Speaker 1: for many many years. I remember, Julio, when you went
- 19:12Speaker 1: to the que POC conference at UCSB when my university
- 19:16Speaker 1: hosted it. Oh my god, Yes, I was a student
- 19:19Speaker 1: that was a senior there and from Afar. I admire
- 19:23Speaker 1: yes but now here, Yes, yes, this is what we
- 19:29Speaker 1: do right, so we're super excited. Um, I want to
- 19:31Speaker 1: shout out Janet Gala. She's a campaign manager at GLAD
- 19:35Speaker 1: and she's actually she actually connected us with Julio because
- 19:39Speaker 1: there is this initiative, this movement happening right now called
- 19:42Speaker 1: hashtag and glusiva. Yeah yeah, uh inclusive screen and basically
- 19:50Speaker 1: yeah yeah, so yeah, so Janet wife and friends. I
- 19:53Speaker 1: actually just met her recently in person. You know that
- 19:57Speaker 1: the friendships that get crazy Instagram in a guy we're
- 20:00Speaker 1: gonna talk about ye, but I find that. So she
- 20:04Speaker 1: hit me up and she was like, you know, we're
- 20:06Speaker 1: doing this or this campaign about how you know this
- 20:09Speaker 1: in the Spanish media. You know, they had just come
- 20:12Speaker 1: up with the with a study that said that like
- 20:15Speaker 1: something like three percent of characters on Spanish media that Telemundo, um,
- 20:21Speaker 1: they only had a three percent um uh of L
- 20:25Speaker 1: G B t Q characters. Tiny percentage and and so
- 20:30Speaker 1: you know, like this was very specifically um uh you know,
- 20:35Speaker 1: to not call out but kind of like say hey,
- 20:37Speaker 1: we're here, you know. And so there was a lot
- 20:39Speaker 1: of artists, you know, like ch Marquez, Uh, you know,
- 20:42Speaker 1: Romto Rico was part of this campaign as well, and
- 20:45Speaker 1: and you know I was part of it. And and
- 20:47Speaker 1: so it was about you know, we want to see
- 20:49Speaker 1: ourselves and TV. You know, like one of the conversations
- 20:52Speaker 1: that we're having earlier was about how as like Hollywood
- 20:56Speaker 1: and TV and all that stuff. To me, it's really
- 20:58Speaker 1: important because that's how other people learn about who the
- 21:01Speaker 1: other is. And so growing up you know, watching watching
- 21:05Speaker 1: you know, sabokiand or whatever. Um, I never saw myself
- 21:08Speaker 1: on TV. And if I ever did, it was always
- 21:10Speaker 1: a joke, you know, like it was like the punchline
- 21:13Speaker 1: and and so yeah, and so um, I think right
- 21:17Speaker 1: now Latin America's it's it's actually trying, um, you know,
- 21:21Speaker 1: with trying to change this. But maybe Scone and Telemundo
- 21:25Speaker 1: are one of the biggest things that our parents are DIA.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And so you know, this campaign was specifically to create characters.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I was my the image that I made what's about
- 21:37Speaker 1: trans you know, men representation, because there was like zero
- 21:40Speaker 1: characters that representing representing a chance transplant specifically, and so um,
- 21:46Speaker 1: I did this image and and yeah, so I was
- 21:48Speaker 1: I was I was, you know, like things like this
- 21:50Speaker 1: to me again are very important, um, you know, Hollywood
- 21:54Speaker 1: and all that stuff, because I think that we need
- 21:56Speaker 1: to we need to we not not only do we
- 21:59Speaker 1: need repair centation like physically, like yeah, I want to
- 22:01Speaker 1: see a character, but the people writing the characters absolutely,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and like, you know, I think that there's something to
- 22:08Speaker 1: be said about you're talking about the telemun A lot
- 22:12Speaker 1: of these production companies that are based or started in
- 22:15Speaker 1: Latin America, but those of us who are physically existing
- 22:19Speaker 1: and creating here in the United States having like a
- 22:22Speaker 1: US based like Latino production and media, because it's totally
- 22:27Speaker 1: different what they end up putting out and then what
- 22:29Speaker 1: we actually are living and want to see. It's not
- 22:33Speaker 1: it doesn't always. Yeah, as somebody who like because I
- 22:36Speaker 1: wasn't born here, I was warning Mexico and I came
- 22:38Speaker 1: here when I was I was living years sould and
- 22:41Speaker 1: so it was nice to see like the novelas that
- 22:44Speaker 1: I was watching, you know, because of course a little
- 22:46Speaker 1: geo watching, you know, and it was nice to see that.
- 22:52Speaker 1: But as I grew up here and you know, like
- 22:56Speaker 1: I don't know if you want to call it American
- 22:57Speaker 1: rights or whatever, um, you know, I started needing more
- 23:00Speaker 1: towards watching um, you know, sitcom's and all that stuff,
- 23:05Speaker 1: and so where sometimes I didn't see myself, well, I
- 23:09Speaker 1: never saw myself on Spanish media. In Hollywood, it was
- 23:12Speaker 1: even worse because like it was either you know, if
- 23:16Speaker 1: if there was it was there was things like Will
- 23:18Speaker 1: and Grace, which was supposed to be like a gay
- 23:21Speaker 1: TV show or whatever, um, and it was not going
- 23:24Speaker 1: to take credit away from that show. And I and
- 23:26Speaker 1: I spoke, and I spoken a lot about you know,
- 23:29Speaker 1: like the gay media, the U S gay media, how
- 23:32Speaker 1: it was the l world. Will and Grace great ground
- 23:35Speaker 1: breaking and everything there. Yeah, but we never saw ourselves
- 23:38Speaker 1: like I. I never you know, I never saw myself yes,
- 23:41Speaker 1: super wide like Ellen exactly. And and so I think
- 23:46Speaker 1: right now there's there's a there's a move in Hollywood
- 23:49Speaker 1: where they're trying to change that, but to me, it doesn't.
- 23:54Speaker 1: It's again, it's not just about us being like us
- 23:57Speaker 1: to see us, but like we need to have show creators,
- 23:59Speaker 1: we need to have you know, writers, we need to
- 24:01Speaker 1: have to know exactly because because then it becomes about
- 24:06Speaker 1: you know, an ideas, and that's how stereotypes get put
- 24:09Speaker 1: out there and and yeah, so I think I'm leaning
- 24:13Speaker 1: more towards I love that. And you know what's wild
- 24:15Speaker 1: to me. And we talk about this because just in
- 24:17Speaker 1: this little like Oil Heights east Side downtown, just like
- 24:21Speaker 1: l a city, like this little hub, we are just
- 24:25Speaker 1: surrounded by so many like Latin X, just like artists
- 24:27Speaker 1: and creators that do everything from like the graphic designers,
- 24:31Speaker 1: the artists, the speakers, the podcasters, the DJ's, like there's
- 24:36Speaker 1: there's a little bit of everything. Like we really could
- 24:39Speaker 1: and build our own and I mean the fact that
- 24:41Speaker 1: you're doing your podcast on your own. Like we are
- 24:43Speaker 1: very lucky to be living in a time of do
- 24:46Speaker 1: it yourselves, like we why yeah, like you don't need
- 24:49Speaker 1: I mean, it'll be nice to have network money and
- 24:52Speaker 1: all that stuff, you know, sponsorship, but you know we
- 24:55Speaker 1: have um and uh and you know, but but like
- 25:04Speaker 1: we we live in an era where you could do
- 25:06Speaker 1: it yourself. You know, you can you can create media.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I mean the Adventures of a Black Girl, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: it's a ray. It's like it's like one of the
- 25:13Speaker 1: biggest examples. And I mean, of course not everybody's going
- 25:16Speaker 1: to get a show at it, but like you get
- 25:18Speaker 1: to tell those stories, and like Hollywood does not have
- 25:21Speaker 1: an excuse to say, oh but we don't know where
- 25:23Speaker 1: this show. We're right here exactly exactly. And so I
- 25:28Speaker 1: literally in Hollywood, we're right here. And that's what I'm like,
- 25:31Speaker 1: we need to take over. We need to like, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 1: as people of color. You know, it's it's yaasta, you
- 25:37Speaker 1: know like that that's not And again it's because Hollywood,
- 25:41Speaker 1: my son. You know, it sounds you know, maybe I
- 25:44Speaker 1: don't know, like it's not real whatever, but I'm like,
- 25:46Speaker 1: look the rest of America. That's how that's what they're
- 25:49Speaker 1: going to learn about us. It's so who's the source?
- 25:54Speaker 1: I know. I was actually going to say, this is
- 25:56Speaker 1: a good transition to talk about, um, the new show
- 26:00Speaker 1: on it starts oh well actually it was. It was
- 26:08Speaker 1: it was based off a story by the god a
- 26:11Speaker 1: little him forgetting his name. But but um, you know
- 26:15Speaker 1: she she created the show. And what I love about
- 26:18Speaker 1: this show is the fact that you know, Daniel was
- 26:22Speaker 1: very it was being very intentional about creating a space
- 26:26Speaker 1: with like it's all Latino X writers. And sure it's
- 26:30Speaker 1: not perfect, it's not. It's I mean, no, that's just
- 26:32Speaker 1: another thing because exactly because there's not that many, especially
- 26:37Speaker 1: queer women of color out there creating shows. I think,
- 26:39Speaker 1: you know, if anything like this is a you know,
- 26:43Speaker 1: like a little girl who's watching this, it's like, oh,
- 26:45Speaker 1: she did it, like I can do it, and so
- 26:47Speaker 1: and so I love the fact that that she's creating
- 26:50Speaker 1: this show, which I I like it. I mean, I'm
- 26:52Speaker 1: being biased because because you got a role, tell us
- 26:57Speaker 1: it look like if you blake, if you blame you
- 26:59Speaker 1: like you missed me. But so so Thania, Um she
- 27:04Speaker 1: hits me up. And and you know, I guess she
- 27:07Speaker 1: she'd be following my work and my artwork, and and
- 27:10Speaker 1: so she wanted to have artwork in in the in
- 27:13Speaker 1: the set. And I was like, sure, you know, why not.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And not just that, but she was like, I want
- 27:19Speaker 1: to have you on the show because a lot of
- 27:21Speaker 1: the times, especially right now, on social media, you see
- 27:23Speaker 1: a piece of art and you move on net snacks right,
- 27:26Speaker 1: and you don't get to see who the person behind
- 27:29Speaker 1: this art show and so or you know, the art
- 27:32Speaker 1: the art piece, and so she wanted to be very
- 27:34Speaker 1: intentional and and put me in, you know, putting me
- 27:36Speaker 1: in this scene. And so again it's really quick if
- 27:38Speaker 1: you blame. You don't see it, but it's there. And
- 27:42Speaker 1: so you know, I showed my mom almost like oh
- 27:44Speaker 1: my god me. So it was it was really cute.
- 27:47Speaker 1: It was really cute and and you know, this is
- 27:50Speaker 1: this this is not my first time that my art
- 27:52Speaker 1: was not nottonious show it was. Another one was for
- 27:57Speaker 1: my Dame's secretary, uh Sararmidez with an amazing actress. So
- 28:05Speaker 1: my my artwork. She's so amazing. She's like she's very
- 28:09Speaker 1: like I've met her, like because she's she's a great activist,
- 28:13Speaker 1: you know, like pushing out for she's actually one of
- 28:16Speaker 1: the faces of the PA. She did a video about it. Yeah,
- 28:20Speaker 1: and so you know, like people, we need more people
- 28:23Speaker 1: like that. Yeah, I like. But yeah. So so it's
- 28:30Speaker 1: it's really it's it's really strange and cool and amazing.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Like I'm proud of myself. Like I'm like, I'm proud
- 28:38Speaker 1: of you, you think, because like I feel like you know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: like I don't know, like drawing was my way of communicating,
- 28:47Speaker 1: you know, like not speaking English was like I was
- 28:49Speaker 1: always a kid in the back of the classroom drawing
- 28:51Speaker 1: the teacher and getting in trouble for it, but making
- 28:54Speaker 1: friends and like so I realized at a really young
- 28:57Speaker 1: age that I could say so much through art. And
- 29:00Speaker 1: so you know the fact that now is like on
- 29:03Speaker 1: shows that you know, like people could see like shot
- 29:08Speaker 1: you know, my protfolio archive at all. Yeah, yeah, so's
- 29:11Speaker 1: it's it's really and I mean and I really, like,
- 29:15Speaker 1: you know, I'm a ham I mean, uh no, but
- 29:20Speaker 1: like I really you know, but I really I think,
- 29:26Speaker 1: you know, not only do I want to kind of
- 29:29Speaker 1: make my way through you know, Hollywood, hwever I can
- 29:31Speaker 1: make it. But like I like being in front of
- 29:33Speaker 1: the camera. It's gonna sound very cliche. It's gonna sound cliche,
- 29:36Speaker 1: but like I'm taking like improv classes because I want
- 29:39Speaker 1: to do something like I'm you know, I'm working. I
- 29:42Speaker 1: wanna I want to make sure I don't just do
- 29:44Speaker 1: it um you know, but like I want to be prepared.
- 29:47Speaker 1: And I think and I think one of the things
- 29:49Speaker 1: that yes, I think one of the things that you know,
- 29:52Speaker 1: the reason why a lot of the times people of
- 29:55Speaker 1: color don't get a lot of these opportunities is because
- 29:58Speaker 1: people don't invest in us. And I think that and
- 30:01Speaker 1: like you can't just put us in front of a camera.
- 30:03Speaker 1: You can't just throw us in there without being prepared,
- 30:05Speaker 1: training and so training, guiding all this stuff, yes, one
- 30:08Speaker 1: of the things. So I'm also part of Culture Strick,
- 30:10Speaker 1: which is in UH national organization art organization, and our
- 30:15Speaker 1: biggest thing is about how can we support artists of color,
- 30:18Speaker 1: queerness of color. And this means investing in them, putting,
- 30:22Speaker 1: like giving doing mentorship. Right now, we're working with undocumented
- 30:25Speaker 1: filmmakers and we're connecting them with people like who directed
- 30:31Speaker 1: and like people like shout out, like I always give
- 30:34Speaker 1: a shout out because people again, people like people like Daniel,
- 30:38Speaker 1: people who are already in that world. They are being
- 30:41Speaker 1: really intentional and like, how can we invest in you?
- 30:44Speaker 1: How can I train you? How can I share this?
- 30:46Speaker 1: And that mere Yes, and it's women of color like
- 30:51Speaker 1: Ana Anthony, she's like all the other prepared. Yeah, she's
- 30:54Speaker 1: in the show. We've talked about that specific thing on
- 30:59Speaker 1: our podcast. Is anybody who has ever written about us
- 31:02Speaker 1: offered us jobs, put us on. There have been exceptions,
- 31:06Speaker 1: all women of color, all all of them across. We
- 31:10Speaker 1: have not gotten any kind of help from any straight men.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I know until after there was visibly like something already,
- 31:17Speaker 1: can I get out of there? What can I get
- 31:19Speaker 1: out of this kind of thing. In fact, yeah, I
- 31:20Speaker 1: mean yeah, I think all of my my mentors you know,
- 31:24Speaker 1: growing up have been you know, having color. Mean Fabiana
- 31:28Speaker 1: Rodriguez who started Culture Strike, she was like, you need
- 31:32Speaker 1: to move to the because I grew up in Long
- 31:34Speaker 1: Beach and a lot of people know my work for
- 31:36Speaker 1: you know, I was doing a lot of stuff with
- 31:37Speaker 1: the dream Bag and immigration reform stuff, and you know,
- 31:41Speaker 1: Fabiana saw my work and she was like, how can
- 31:44Speaker 1: I help, Like can you come to the Bay Area,
- 31:46Speaker 1: like I'm starting this organization and like not like I
- 31:50Speaker 1: feel like I mean it was lucky, but also like
- 31:52Speaker 1: she saw talent. She's how potential and so to me, like,
- 31:54Speaker 1: I'm like we need to continue to do that. We
- 31:56Speaker 1: need to pay it forward and not just like oh,
- 32:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna put you on the show because you have
- 32:02Speaker 1: no like how can how can I connect you? How
- 32:04Speaker 1: can I hook you up? Because one of the things
- 32:07Speaker 1: that I tell like, if you're studying art, if you're
- 32:09Speaker 1: doing like take I know it sounds very capitalistic, but
- 32:12Speaker 1: you need to take a business class. You need to
- 32:14Speaker 1: do how to basic invoices, like all those things. Yes,
- 32:17Speaker 1: that's counting on your own. If you're studying art, take
- 32:22Speaker 1: a business class, tax learn, learn, yes, like it's it's
- 32:28Speaker 1: it's really important. And Faya has really taught me a
- 32:31Speaker 1: lot of those things and so like and and this
- 32:34Speaker 1: is something I always tell Fi And I'm like, you
- 32:35Speaker 1: have so much knowledge, like she needs to write a book,
- 32:37Speaker 1: like you know, you know how to do stuff like that. Oh,
- 32:41Speaker 1: there's so much knowledge that we have. There's so much knowledge,
- 32:44Speaker 1: a lot of projects we need to do. It's and
- 32:46Speaker 1: I was talking to somebody. I was talking to Ruth,
- 32:48Speaker 1: Ruth and Truth Visuals. I was talking to Ruth and
- 32:50Speaker 1: I was like, you know, honestly, I don't believe that
- 32:53Speaker 1: any of these suckers in Hollywood, these major directors, none
- 32:56Speaker 1: of them are any smarter than us. They're not more talented. Clearly,
- 32:59Speaker 1: they're not have you smarter, They're not more talented. They're
- 33:01Speaker 1: not geniuses. They're really not. There are people who with
- 33:04Speaker 1: an idea who have money and connect connected. The difference
- 33:08Speaker 1: is the funding and the connections and the investment. Yeah,
- 33:11Speaker 1: and the investment. And I like that you bring up
- 33:13Speaker 1: Ray too, because and we've talked about this also. She
- 33:15Speaker 1: in an interview. She was talking about you know, build horizontally,
- 33:19Speaker 1: like work with your friends, and that's what she did
- 33:22Speaker 1: and I like that and that's what has been Like
- 33:24Speaker 1: this morning we had a photo shoot with Adriana and
- 33:26Speaker 1: Adrianna has like designed her logo, she designed her pains
- 33:29Speaker 1: that have just come to ask me because it's like
- 33:31Speaker 1: amazing did and graphic designer. She's a graphic designer. Sizzle
- 33:36Speaker 1: has like with obviously she's like that's my husband. You
- 33:40Speaker 1: know that. Well, Sizzle will come back into the hold later.
- 33:44Speaker 1: I think this is a good time to transition. You
- 33:47Speaker 1: were talking about undocumented filmmakers and you know the film medium,
- 33:51Speaker 1: and I know that there's an installation coming up that
- 33:53Speaker 1: has with that. You want to tell you more about that,
- 33:56Speaker 1: So I'm really excited. So actually the Fault TV as
- 34:00Speaker 1: I saw a couple of like Diane Garrero's coming with Grero.
- 34:05Speaker 1: I think she's like having doing a show that she's
- 34:07Speaker 1: got greenlit. Um. There's other shows that are like you know,
- 34:10Speaker 1: around immigration, um. And I think right now immigration and
- 34:14Speaker 1: dreamers were like a hot topic because people want to
- 34:16Speaker 1: talk about it. But I'm like we've been creating on
- 34:19Speaker 1: content like we like there's there's this for a long time.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Undocumented people having creating content like video content. UM one
- 34:29Speaker 1: of the one of the first documentaries that I saw
- 34:33Speaker 1: where I saw what I saw like our actual experience
- 34:36Speaker 1: as some documented youth at the time, I was using
- 34:38Speaker 1: two thousand and seven Tom Trent. It was she was
- 34:42Speaker 1: a filmmaker. She unfortunately passed away in a car accident,
- 34:45Speaker 1: and she was like a hardcore activist for the dream Act.
- 34:49Speaker 1: And so she made this documentary call Lost and Found,
- 34:53Speaker 1: and it follows the student to some documented students from
- 34:56Speaker 1: u c l A. And she's the struggles that it
- 34:58Speaker 1: was like, you know, again at the time, we were
- 35:00Speaker 1: trying to pass a dream bag when it was much
- 35:02Speaker 1: about the you know, the what it's like to be
- 35:04Speaker 1: on a documented student. But like she made she she
- 35:07Speaker 1: created this and and to me like the fact that
- 35:10Speaker 1: not a lot of people outside of the un documented
- 35:11Speaker 1: community know this, I'm like earlier this year, I was like,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I need to like figure out how can we an archives.
- 35:17Speaker 1: So I started like looking up and and really like
- 35:19Speaker 1: hitting up friends that I knew that had created stuff.
- 35:23Speaker 1: And I was like, I wanna, you know, start doing
- 35:26Speaker 1: like a like a timeline or an archive. And so
- 35:28Speaker 1: through Culture Strike, using the hashtag on document Film Thursday,
- 35:32Speaker 1: we've been posting a filmmaker, highlighting a filmmaker and their work,
- 35:37Speaker 1: and that's all going to be put in display. Um
- 35:42Speaker 1: I think I can say it now. Hopeby by the
- 35:44Speaker 1: time this comes out. So LA Leave which stands for
- 35:47Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival at the Chinese Theater,
- 35:51Speaker 1: which is happening in June. Um. Uh. We're collaborating with
- 35:55Speaker 1: Raphaesparsa and putting this installation where we're gonna show a timeline,
- 35:59Speaker 1: you know, of all this of this videos, and we're
- 36:02Speaker 1: showing fifteen videos and that's only a small timeline. I'm
- 36:07Speaker 1: seeing visions of your own undocumented film festival. Let's plant
- 36:13Speaker 1: plus yeah, cans cans no, Yeah, Like I I think,
- 36:24Speaker 1: I think, you know, I'm really I was once when
- 36:28Speaker 1: we're doing we're doing a walk through the space, and
- 36:31Speaker 1: I was like, girl, I remember when I was in
- 36:34Speaker 1: high school, I used to take the bus from Long
- 36:36Speaker 1: Beach the Blue Line to the Red Lights and I
- 36:39Speaker 1: just walk around Hollywood Boulevard being well, just walking around there,
- 36:44Speaker 1: you know, walking around being like apperly, flirting with people
- 36:47Speaker 1: and like just being a teenager. No. I used to
- 36:50Speaker 1: take the and just like drawing on the train. But
- 36:52Speaker 1: I'm like, and now we're here putting this installation together,
- 36:55Speaker 1: Like I was just like yeah. I was just like yeah,
- 36:57Speaker 1: like like raped because I never done installation and I
- 37:02Speaker 1: was like I wanted to, you know, hit up somebody
- 37:04Speaker 1: who knew and you know, how to put this together.
- 37:06Speaker 1: And so Drap I was like I told him about
- 37:09Speaker 1: the concept and he was like yeah, I'm down, Like
- 37:11Speaker 1: what can I do? And so that's in collaboration with
- 37:15Speaker 1: l Leaf and Culture Strikes. So we're doing that and
- 37:18Speaker 1: and we're the installation is going to be open. The
- 37:21Speaker 1: film was going to go from June, but on June
- 37:24Speaker 1: two is when we're trying to plant something and what
- 37:27Speaker 1: is the name of the installation for people who want
- 37:29Speaker 1: to look it up and go see it? And that
- 37:31Speaker 1: and the installation is Concasa is wait, no, hold on,
- 37:35Speaker 1: we just we literally just came up with a name.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Oh my god, you're pretty on the spot, like literally
- 37:40Speaker 1: like yeah, it's like it's literally about having cameras and uh,
- 37:44Speaker 1: you know, because again like I don't need papers to
- 37:48Speaker 1: create I don't I don't need I always say this
- 37:51Speaker 1: like I'm like, if I get deported all the ship
- 37:54Speaker 1: like I might get physically important, but all the ship
- 37:55Speaker 1: that I created, all the things that I have in
- 37:57Speaker 1: my mind that it can be deported, and so and
- 38:00Speaker 1: so to me, I'm like I wanted again, you know,
- 38:02Speaker 1: like I wanted to like, you know, acknowledge all this
- 38:05Speaker 1: amazing folks. Nancy Messa is another one. She's like a
- 38:09Speaker 1: great she's an activist here from from from boil Hides,
- 38:14Speaker 1: and she was part of this film called Limbo and
- 38:18Speaker 1: they basically, uh, you know, they took cameras and they
- 38:22Speaker 1: were recording their experiences and they put it together in
- 38:25Speaker 1: this film. And I'm like, how do people don't know
- 38:27Speaker 1: this film? You know, like we need to have And
- 38:28Speaker 1: so to me again like it's it's a it's a
- 38:30Speaker 1: kind of like a visual timeline of all these things
- 38:34Speaker 1: that have been creating. That's beautiful, so much going on,
- 38:37Speaker 1: so much exciting stuff going on. And there's a party
- 38:39Speaker 1: also that you're because you know, all the for those
- 38:43Speaker 1: of you who don't know anybody who goes to does
- 38:47Speaker 1: all the beautiful, amazing, fabulous, colorful flyers if you haven't been, uh,
- 38:56Speaker 1: it's a party that was started by DJ Sisle and
- 39:00Speaker 1: her friend norms and I'm badass, you know, undocumented women
- 39:05Speaker 1: of color, you know, and creating a space for for
- 39:09Speaker 1: for undocumented folks, career people, uh, women to co and
- 39:13Speaker 1: like party without like having to like worry about you know,
- 39:16Speaker 1: assholes and all that stuff and and and and not
- 39:18Speaker 1: being in like toxic spaces. So she's not fun and
- 39:21Speaker 1: so yeah, like like I just love Si so because
- 39:24Speaker 1: like she's she's just over the place. Yeah and so
- 39:28Speaker 1: um so we're coming. So I you know, actually I was.
- 39:31Speaker 1: I was living in the Bay Area when the party started,
- 39:34Speaker 1: and I was looking from Afar and I was like
- 39:37Speaker 1: I want to be part of that. Like I'm like,
- 39:39Speaker 1: how can I help? And it was I came to
- 39:41Speaker 1: stel and I was like, girl, like, let me help
- 39:43Speaker 1: you with the flyers, like I wanted. I wanted a
- 39:44Speaker 1: lot of the stuff that I do is like very
- 39:46Speaker 1: heavy political stuff. And what she's doing, you know, creating
- 39:50Speaker 1: this space and she just having fun and because all
- 39:53Speaker 1: the ship that we see on the news, like we
- 39:55Speaker 1: need to be able to like go to space. And
- 39:56Speaker 1: she danced it, danced it up like yes, yeah, yes, yes,
- 40:03Speaker 1: and so I was like I was like, I was like, girl,
- 40:04Speaker 1: how can I help, and so she was like, oh, well,
- 40:06Speaker 1: like you know, so I do the flyers and that's
- 40:09Speaker 1: a lot of fun. And then also there's another crew
- 40:13Speaker 1: that does uh this space um Scum Scum party um
- 40:18Speaker 1: and it's by Rudy Blue and he used to be
- 40:21Speaker 1: part of the Money Can Collective Shout Out Yes. And
- 40:25Speaker 1: what I love about is that if I grew up
- 40:28Speaker 1: as an alternative rock listening, no doubt that was me.
- 40:33Speaker 1: That was like all the colors and in the rainbow
- 40:35Speaker 1: in my hair I have, Yeah, that was me. So
- 40:38Speaker 1: they have this party called scumb there was actually last
- 40:41Speaker 1: night they had one. That's why I'm a little bit
- 40:44Speaker 1: I'm hungover Chicos. They do this party and so scum
- 40:50Speaker 1: and is coming together and we're going to have a
- 40:53Speaker 1: party and it's it's it's one of the It was like,
- 40:56Speaker 1: this is one of the parties that we're having because
- 40:57Speaker 1: it's a it's a one year celebration for going it's
- 41:01Speaker 1: gonna turn one year old. And so like why the
- 41:03Speaker 1: first party June fifteen here boil highs at first three buillards. Uh,
- 41:08Speaker 1: It's it's right here on on first on first Street,
- 41:11Speaker 1: right in front of the gym's Burgers. But I'm really excited.
- 41:13Speaker 1: I'm really excited. Um, you know, there's gonna be drag queens.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Selto who's like an amazing drag queen. My friend, my
- 41:20Speaker 1: friend Laddie's who that does like this great impersonation of
- 41:23Speaker 1: Cruz Like it's gonna be. It's gonna be like sucking
- 41:27Speaker 1: new wave music, Cumbia and new wave music, like it's
- 41:31Speaker 1: gonna be. It's it's like a look at, look out
- 41:34Speaker 1: for the flyers. It's gonna be coming. So but June fifteen,
- 41:36Speaker 1: June fifteen, are your calendar has come through? Is that
- 41:38Speaker 1: we're gonna have to go. We're gonna have absolutely really
- 41:41Speaker 1: have to I love parties are really good. It's it's
- 41:45Speaker 1: it's such it's such a good time. And yeah, like
- 41:48Speaker 1: I always think about how and again I tellus, I'm like, girl,
- 41:52Speaker 1: you're you're making a space for people to to like
- 41:57Speaker 1: just come and have fun. And like I think those
- 42:00Speaker 1: spaces are sacred, Like those spaces aren't necessary. And people,
- 42:04Speaker 1: it's just a party. Well, it's more than a party.
- 42:06Speaker 1: It's more than you're not Like if you're not a
- 42:09Speaker 1: queer woman of color, a queer person, like you don't
- 42:11Speaker 1: understand like the party space and how it's a sanctuary
- 42:15Speaker 1: for us in many ways. You know, we talk about
- 42:17Speaker 1: the party is politics, like yes, here on the podcast,
- 42:21Speaker 1: we love the party. We love to dance. And also
- 42:24Speaker 1: like in the context because it's a survivors centered podcast,
- 42:27Speaker 1: taking back the night, taking back the bar, taking back
- 42:30Speaker 1: the club, and I should be able to go out
- 42:32Speaker 1: and have fun and get drunk with my friends and
- 42:35Speaker 1: like not be in dangerous exactly. Yeah. Yeah, and and
- 42:38Speaker 1: and that's that I appreciate you know, a sistele for like,
- 42:41Speaker 1: you know, handling and like fucking doing. I'm just like
- 42:45Speaker 1: and and this is again like I've gotten head up
- 42:48Speaker 1: because people think that I'm behind of course, and also
- 42:53Speaker 1: like I automatically as a male, like you must be
- 42:56Speaker 1: in charge, must be the one who was like no,
- 42:59Speaker 1: first of all, I actually like came Stila Norms started
- 43:04Speaker 1: this and shout out to shout out to their podcast,
- 43:09Speaker 1: new podcast, new podcast, new podcast, live broadcast, live radio,
- 43:14Speaker 1: what they call jo journalists on Tuesday. Yes, Tuesday's here. Yes,
- 43:20Speaker 1: And so I'm a girl like I we went we went, Okay,
- 43:24Speaker 1: so we went to we went to go see doesn't
- 43:27Speaker 1: Bronco And at the Staples Center and I'm like, sist,
- 43:32Speaker 1: I see you here Staple standard, Like I see it.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I'm like, you need to be out there. Yes, because
- 43:40Speaker 1: she curates, She curates. She knows what she's doing, having
- 43:45Speaker 1: work now worked with Sizzle for an actual like to
- 43:48Speaker 1: see everything that she puts into her night unto like
- 43:52Speaker 1: taking care of her DJs, the vendors, her line up,
- 43:55Speaker 1: her schedule, everything, everything, everything. It's really cute. We keep
- 43:59Speaker 1: doing what you're doing, love you, my husband. And speaking
- 44:03Speaker 1: of having fun, what's the what's dating? Like on TV?
- 44:11Speaker 1: You're working on TV, You're here, You're there, She's she's
- 44:15Speaker 1: like an extra for a little bit. And all of
- 44:17Speaker 1: a sudden, Well we were talking about like do you
- 44:21Speaker 1: because I was so okay, so I as a personal size,
- 44:25Speaker 1: like I grew up very like kind of shine, like
- 44:28Speaker 1: I'm not like guys didn't really come to me, you know,
- 44:32Speaker 1: and like what's up Like well, I mean I don't know,
- 44:37Speaker 1: like like whenever. And I'm talking about like you know,
- 44:40Speaker 1: when I go to Gate when I used to go
- 44:41Speaker 1: to Gate clubs when I was like younger and like
- 44:43Speaker 1: weiho right, And there's like there's a specific beauty standard
- 44:47Speaker 1: within the gate community that like, I clearly I'm not
- 44:49Speaker 1: a muscle guy, and so if you're Latino, you're like
- 44:52Speaker 1: have to look a certain way or you're not look that.
- 44:54Speaker 1: And so I like that ship like funk with me.
- 44:57Speaker 1: And so when I started, like, you know, it's so
- 45:00Speaker 1: weird to call them fans, like, you know, but people
- 45:02Speaker 1: I support my work, you know, start hitting me up.
- 45:05Speaker 1: And then there's like a conversation terms of flirtatious and
- 45:07Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, it's like are we flirting? Are we
- 45:11Speaker 1: talking to each other? Like are you talking to me
- 45:13Speaker 1: because you think I'm cute? Are you talking to me
- 45:16Speaker 1: because you admire the work? Like I like, it's weird.
- 45:20Speaker 1: It's exactly exactly like would you talk to me? We
- 45:23Speaker 1: were at the bar, you know who it was like.
- 45:25Speaker 1: And again it's like a very small like it's not
- 45:27Speaker 1: like I'm like walking down the street and people are
- 45:29Speaker 1: like that like that what happens? Yeah and so and
- 45:34Speaker 1: and also yeah, and also there's that and also like
- 45:36Speaker 1: I also you know, don't want to take advantage of that,
- 45:38Speaker 1: like you know, there's there's you know, there's people who
- 45:41Speaker 1: take a man. It's like it's like a weird power dynamic.
- 45:43Speaker 1: You know, I've mentioned it before. We're like I'll go
- 45:45Speaker 1: to colleges and you know, like young queer people, like
- 45:49Speaker 1: you know, they see you and they're like, oh my god,
- 45:51Speaker 1: I see there's something about that that you're like, oh
- 45:53Speaker 1: my god, I want to talk to you. But like
- 45:55Speaker 1: you have to be able to like not take advantage
- 45:58Speaker 1: of your power and so so. But then time and
- 46:00Speaker 1: then there's like the weirdos who hit you up. I see,
- 46:06Speaker 1: what is your experience? Like, okay, so so we sort
- 46:11Speaker 1: of have I mean, okay, we have a general rule.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I'm like, how we have I think we have a
- 46:21Speaker 1: general rule about like not dating our listeners. It's a
- 46:26Speaker 1: it's a good rule. And like we were talking about
- 46:28Speaker 1: before we started recording, we've had experiences of like people, Okay,
- 46:32Speaker 1: we we do get recognized when we're out in public.
- 46:35Speaker 1: The women Moohanna's will come up to us and make
- 46:38Speaker 1: it known that they recognize us, and they'll talk to us.
- 46:41Speaker 1: But if I've had the experience of like I come
- 46:43Speaker 1: home from something or a couple there's an event, and
- 46:46Speaker 1: a couple of days later or a couple of weeks later,
- 46:48Speaker 1: I get a random d M from a random ass
- 46:50Speaker 1: dude who's like, oh, I saw you at X, Y
- 46:52Speaker 1: and Z place and you were wearing this, and like
- 46:56Speaker 1: definitely saw me, but I couldn't tell you who homeboy was.
- 46:59Speaker 1: I have no idea. Don't do that. That type of
- 47:02Speaker 1: stuff freaks me out because I'm like, I don't know
- 47:04Speaker 1: when who's looking at me and who knows too much
- 47:06Speaker 1: about me or what. At any given time. If I'm
- 47:09Speaker 1: downtown and I'm on the east Side, it does happen.
- 47:11Speaker 1: I wasn't the Metro the other day. I wasn't in
- 47:13Speaker 1: the met I was in the Red Line. I was
- 47:16Speaker 1: coming home. And then I get home and I get
- 47:18Speaker 1: a DM and as this guy he sends me a
- 47:21Speaker 1: picture of me waiting for the trip. He was like,
- 47:24Speaker 1: was like, I didn't want to. I know, this is weird.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, it's kind of weird, but I saw you.
- 47:30Speaker 1: I saw you at the at the at the seventh
- 47:32Speaker 1: Street Metro station and he sent me a picture, and
- 47:35Speaker 1: I was like, part of me was like that, with
- 47:38Speaker 1: part me is like, oh my god, the stalker stop it.
- 47:44Speaker 1: No that He's like, yeah, I know, it's like everywhere.
- 47:48Speaker 1: So I was like, another thing is you never know
- 47:54Speaker 1: a little bit, I'm not gonna not better, but yeah,
- 47:56Speaker 1: it's it's just like it's like, you know, like like
- 48:00Speaker 1: place of work, Like no, I don't want to date
- 48:03Speaker 1: anybody who's like my coworker, Like you know, if it's
- 48:06Speaker 1: like about what you know, You're like, no, it's messy.
- 48:09Speaker 1: I would rather I'm really into like, um only right now,
- 48:12Speaker 1: hooking up with people who are just visiting from out
- 48:15Speaker 1: of town and who are leaving every day, that's a
- 48:18Speaker 1: good one. That's a good one. Okay, So because I
- 48:22Speaker 1: travel because and like you know, she she has grinders
- 48:26Speaker 1: sometimes and sometimes I hooked up with this guy one
- 48:28Speaker 1: time and grind her came over to my hotel. You
- 48:30Speaker 1: know what happens, you know, it did the dirty Bob
- 48:32Speaker 1: or whatever. He was like, oh, you know, like let's
- 48:34Speaker 1: keep in touch Facebook whatever. I'm like, okay, sure it
- 48:36Speaker 1: was a white guy. I get the benefit of the doubt,
- 48:38Speaker 1: I know. I was like, you know, cool, gave me
- 48:41Speaker 1: the benefit of the doubt, and then he gave me
- 48:43Speaker 1: his Facebook and then he left, and then I'm like,
- 48:45Speaker 1: let me see what I hooked up with girl. One
- 48:47Speaker 1: of the first things, one of the first posts that
- 48:49Speaker 1: I saw it was like from Blue Lives Matter, and
- 48:52Speaker 1: then like I keep scrolling and it's like he has
- 48:54Speaker 1: like an article pole still, an article from Bravard, you know,
- 48:58Speaker 1: illegal alien criminal, you left. I'm like, you give white
- 49:07Speaker 1: people the benefit of the doubt and the competition deserve
- 49:10Speaker 1: the benefit of at this point, they don't. I was
- 49:13Speaker 1: I was lonely. I was like in Minnesota or something
- 49:16Speaker 1: like the Yeah. Yeah, it was like, you know, very
- 49:22Speaker 1: limited options. But I was just like low key. I
- 49:26Speaker 1: kind of want to be like you know who you
- 49:27Speaker 1: looked up with, right, but you know I didn't. So
- 49:31Speaker 1: I was like that's the thing like with with stranger,
- 49:33Speaker 1: like you know, you know, anonymous or whatever, it's like
- 49:37Speaker 1: you never know. But like the good thing about it's
- 49:39Speaker 1: like I'm never going to see him again because like
- 49:41Speaker 1: you know, I left, So I guess that's like that's
- 49:43Speaker 1: that's kind of like what you kind of put in
- 49:46Speaker 1: like when you're when you're doing that, you kind of
- 49:49Speaker 1: the distance helps, Yeah, because no, I don't want to
- 49:53Speaker 1: run into you. I don't want to run Yeah, girl,
- 49:56Speaker 1: Like that's why friends don't give me faces, don't make
- 50:03Speaker 1: faces of me. I know all the secrets. She does
- 50:09Speaker 1: know all the sea I want to say. I want
- 50:11Speaker 1: to let it be known that if you are a
- 50:13Speaker 1: man with a girlfriend or you are DM, I know
- 50:19Speaker 1: about it. I know about it. So I just want
- 50:23Speaker 1: it to be know. I've seen the messages. We're not
- 50:26Speaker 1: naming names today, but there's a number of like Latino
- 50:31Speaker 1: men who are in the industry and in the world
- 50:33Speaker 1: and who are creators who have their very public girlfriends
- 50:36Speaker 1: all over the pages that be in everybody's d M,
- 50:40Speaker 1: responding to all the i G stories, d ms on Instagram,
- 50:44Speaker 1: d M on Twitter, sending Facebook firm requests. Homeboy, I
- 50:48Speaker 1: know about it, homeboys, and I'm shaming you. Don't do it?
- 50:53Speaker 1: You know what the first time? Don't I shouldn't even
- 51:00Speaker 1: say no, Like okay, So that's a young gay man iven.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Um uh. Like back in the day before there was grinder,
- 51:09Speaker 1: before there was all that stuff, Um, there was party lines.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Did you ever called party lines? A little a little
- 51:16Speaker 1: bit at a little a little bit younger? She studied poor,
- 51:19Speaker 1: but she looks like she's not. Yeah. No. So I
- 51:22Speaker 1: met this guy on a party line and then we
- 51:25Speaker 1: met up. I was eighteen. We met up at Union
- 51:28Speaker 1: Station and he picked me up from he lived in
- 51:30Speaker 1: the valley and so he picked me up. We don't
- 51:32Speaker 1: do the valley, okay, but anyway, so he picks me up.
- 51:42Speaker 1: He was like, let's go back to my place, and
- 51:43Speaker 1: I was like, okay, let's go. So I go to
- 51:45Speaker 1: his house and I'm like, looking up, there's like pictures
- 51:49Speaker 1: of like him, like a lady and kids, and I'm like,
- 51:52Speaker 1: are you married? He was like, oh, but it's fine,
- 51:57Speaker 1: married man, listen and okay, look and I understand sexuality
- 52:02Speaker 1: and he was left, you know, and like, you know,
- 52:04Speaker 1: being queer, it's like it's like a taboo. Although I'm
- 52:07Speaker 1: hoping that things are changing, and like, you know, the
- 52:09Speaker 1: way that we see, you know, especially if you're queer,
- 52:11Speaker 1: and people in the d L, Like, I'm not shaming
- 52:14Speaker 1: man in the d L. It's it's funked up that
- 52:16Speaker 1: you're like, you know, doing this. But that's why I
- 52:19Speaker 1: feel like open relationships are the way to go. Like
- 52:22Speaker 1: I tried, honestly, open, honest, honestly that somebody had somebody
- 52:29Speaker 1: tell me I'm in a non monogamous exclusive relationship. I'm like,
- 52:35Speaker 1: that sounds of a girlfriend. Monogamous exclusive relationships like that
- 52:40Speaker 1: sounds like a fiance. And he's like, no, mo anogamous
- 52:42Speaker 1: committed not monogamous committed relationship. I'm like, if it was
- 52:46Speaker 1: a truly open relationship, you would have just sent that
- 52:48Speaker 1: yeah words exactly. No, it's it's a true. Look. I
- 52:53Speaker 1: I was in my last relationship, like you know that
- 52:56Speaker 1: I was in amazing good Man and you know, that
- 53:01Speaker 1: was my first time into being an open relationship, and
- 53:03Speaker 1: I part of me was like, oh my god, I'm
- 53:05Speaker 1: gonna be like jealous. I'm gonna be like I met
- 53:08Speaker 1: the guys that he was sleeping with and like it
- 53:10Speaker 1: was cool, like they was honestly, honestly we worked up
- 53:14Speaker 1: because you know, again, like I'm like he he was
- 53:16Speaker 1: a good man, Like I like, I was like that
- 53:18Speaker 1: was my fault. Uh, you know, like I'm a virgol.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I wanted me time all the time, and he was
- 53:25Speaker 1: like that's not fair. But anyways, but I learned so
- 53:28Speaker 1: much about like, you know, being like and that's like
- 53:30Speaker 1: I don't know if it's that that's a very Bay
- 53:32Speaker 1: Area and like, you know, like I feel like I've
- 53:35Speaker 1: been here. When I bring it up with other guys,
- 53:38Speaker 1: they're kind of like, I don't know, but I'm like,
- 53:40Speaker 1: but I know you've been cheating on your men anyway.
- 53:43Speaker 1: So it's like if you're gonna like they want to
- 53:45Speaker 1: be able to do it, but they don't want you
- 53:46Speaker 1: to actually openly, honestly be able to do And I
- 53:49Speaker 1: don't know what it's like to be like in straight
- 53:51Speaker 1: relationships that open people like like the sneaking around, like
- 53:55Speaker 1: that's what TA get off on, the lying, the deleting messages,
- 54:00Speaker 1: sil of it. You know. Okay, I cheated at one time,
- 54:05Speaker 1: and I mean I made I was a guy, like
- 54:08Speaker 1: I made that, like I was in a relationship and
- 54:10Speaker 1: then I went to Chicago and I got drawn something
- 54:12Speaker 1: told me I was pretty and we made it out
- 54:14Speaker 1: whatever um, but I felt really bad, like I was
- 54:18Speaker 1: just like I feel horrible, like you know, like there
- 54:22Speaker 1: was clearly there was issues in that relationship, but I cheated,
- 54:25Speaker 1: and I felt really bad with being in this relationship
- 54:28Speaker 1: when the the option the open the option of being open,
- 54:32Speaker 1: like it's there, but like you don't necessarily have to
- 54:36Speaker 1: like do it, you know, like you could be in
- 54:37Speaker 1: openment and the whole thing is like again it comes
- 54:40Speaker 1: down to communications, you know, like honey, look or whatever,
- 54:44Speaker 1: and like it comes down to like note, like we
- 54:46Speaker 1: are you know, especially you know, like when we're talking
- 54:50Speaker 1: about sex being safe, because those those things are important
- 54:53Speaker 1: because like you're affecting somebody else and that's you know,
- 54:57Speaker 1: there's no stigma around like STDs and all that stuff.
- 54:59Speaker 1: There's stigma, but like you're putting somebody's body like without
- 55:03Speaker 1: their consent about what they're doing. And so I think
- 55:05Speaker 1: that's why it's important to you know, if you're going
- 55:09Speaker 1: to be doing that, like being a getting prepped. Yes,
- 55:12Speaker 1: take all your precautions. We're talking about it, talk about it,
- 55:17Speaker 1: talk about it because yeah, it's a lot. Like you're saying,
- 55:20Speaker 1: what ends up happening more often than not is all
- 55:23Speaker 1: these married people who are sneaking around not being safe
- 55:26Speaker 1: and then giving STDs to their partner. That happened to
- 55:29Speaker 1: somebody that you know recently, Right, It's like it's really
- 55:33Speaker 1: a thing, So don't do that. I think the wind
- 55:37Speaker 1: you're coming to somebody else. Same. It's been a really fun, fun,
- 55:44Speaker 1: so much episode, Julio, Thank you so much for coming,
