- 0:21her chicken coop along with all her chickens.
- 0:27Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:29coop. If you hear some weird sounds in
- 0:32the background, it might not just be the chickens today
- 0:35because apparently we have a wild Peacock that has shown up
- 0:38in our neighborhood and boy is he loud.
- 0:42I always thought I wanted a Peacock until one showed up and
- 0:44now I'm like, oh maybe not. Anyway, if you hear it, that's
- 0:48what that strange sound is. OK, so today we are talking
- 0:51about gratitude practices, and I think this is such an
- 0:55interesting subject because we're told you should practice
- 0:59gratitude and I agree. I 100% agree that we should
- 1:03practice gratitude. The challenge that I have with
- 1:05it is that it often becomes A to do item on the list where you
- 1:11just have to run it, do it, check it off and move on.
- 1:15And I find that to be the most difficult part for myself and
- 1:21for my clients. Over the years, I've changed
- 1:24mine. And I'm going to teach you this
- 1:25today because I think it's important to understand some
- 1:27distinctions about it and that you can be successful with it.
- 1:31But what I just witnessed with my clients often is they will.
- 1:34You know, people that come and do coaching and listen to this
- 1:37kind of stuff tend to be the the people who will throw themselves
- 1:41into being consistent and forever learners.
- 1:44When you're a forever learner, you're always taking in more
- 1:47information and you hear different things and then you
- 1:49try different things out and then they get disappointed with
- 1:52themselves because they can't keep up with what the person is
- 1:54telling them. So often gratitude is the
- 1:57subject because it it is a key, it is an absolute key piece of
- 2:02the puzzle to success and to long term well-being.
- 2:07And there are many different, Just like there are many
- 2:10different diets in the world, there are many different ways to
- 2:12go about practicing gratitude. Now, I have tried a lot of them.
- 2:16I won't say I've tried all of them.
- 2:17I would have tried a lot of them.
- 2:19And for me, most of them didn't work because I can't just go
- 2:23ahead and put something on a piece of paper in the morning
- 2:26and put something on a piece of paper at night and then for the
- 2:30rest of the day, forget about it.
- 2:31It just doesn't work. The way my brain is wired, it
- 2:34just doesn't work for me. I feel like I'm just checking
- 2:37off a box and I often tell a story about a family member who
- 2:44used to wear a what would Jesus do?
- 2:47Necklace and read the Bible every morning and then she would
- 2:50leave and then be dreadful to people and then come back at
- 2:54night and read her Bible. And I always felt like the
- 2:57hypocrisy of that was just too much for my heart to bear and I
- 3:01just I I this reminds me of that.
- 3:04So when you are not practicing gratitude throughout the day,
- 3:07you you lose sight of what it really means to practice
- 3:12gratitude. And the small stuff you know,
- 3:15you've heard so many people who have said you know, don't don't
- 3:19miss the small stuff, look for the small things, look for all
- 3:22the great little things that you you see all day and can
- 3:25experience all day. And I could not be in more
- 3:28agreement of that. I could not be in more agreement
- 3:30of that. I think that that is a key,
- 3:33essential tool, if you will, to human psychological well-being.
- 3:42You have to stop multiple times throughout your day.
- 3:46So my practice for gratitude was developed because I absolutely
- 3:52needed to settle down. I have a brain that runs very
- 3:56fast. I'm all over the place.
- 3:57I still do, even with everything that I know and all the training
- 4:00I have. I have a coach.
- 4:02I have to practice this because this is something that is a big
- 4:05deal for me. My brain runs 100 miles an hour,
- 4:08as my husband would happily tell you.
- 4:10He'll say, Why are we talking about this now?
- 4:12Because you're thinking too far ahead, or you're doing this, or
- 4:15you're doing this. And it's true.
- 4:16I have a very hard time organically staying in the
- 4:20moment, so practicing mindfulness.
- 4:23If you've ever practiced mindfulness or attempted to
- 4:26practice mindfulness, which which is what it is for me, I
- 4:29attempt to practice mindfulness, It's really just being in the
- 4:32moment. It's being wholly present in the
- 4:34moment you're in and not having your body being doing something
- 4:37and your hands being doing something, but your mind being
- 4:39in 10 different directions, like a whirling dervish out there all
- 4:43over the place. It's hard.
- 4:46Mindfulness is very, very hard, and it's something that we have
- 4:49to constantly practice. And it's something that I work
- 4:53on every single day without fail, no matter what I do.
- 4:57Work on it. Because for me, I have made that
- 4:59as important as hygiene. Brushing my teeth, taking a
- 5:03shower, it's just as important. Cleaning my brain, that is just
- 5:07as important. If I'm willing to take a shower
- 5:09and brush my teeth, I've got to be willing to do something for
- 5:11my brain. So for me, mindfulness is part
- 5:15of it, but how I get there is a little different.
- 5:19So think of it this way, instead of just being in the moment and
- 5:22looking around and saying, OK, here I am, here is a tree, here
- 5:26is the ground, here are my shoes.
- 5:28Here's this if that just felt like I was disconnected.
- 5:31Still, just because I noticed little things didn't mean I had
- 5:34any emotion around it. And as someone who's emotional,
- 5:38we all are just didn't feel right to me.
- 5:40So I started infusing my mindfulness with gratitude.
- 5:44Meaning every time I saw something, I could pour into
- 5:48that and say I was grateful for it.
- 5:50Like, for instance, I could be grateful for toothpaste.
- 5:53I mean, what an amazing little thing that somebody came up
- 5:55with. Or a paper clip.
- 5:57I mean, really pause and think about how cool a paper clip we
- 6:00just use them and we don't even think about them.
- 6:02But it's actually someone actually invented that.
- 6:04You look at that. It's it's pretty cool.
- 6:06Or what nature has for us everywhere.
- 6:08Flowers that show up randomly when you're walking something
- 6:12that grew through the sidewalk always amazes me.
- 6:14And I have such. I think admiration is probably
- 6:19the best word for the seed that never gave up and it just found
- 6:22its way right through the most difficult thing that it possibly
- 6:24could concrete. And here it is.
- 6:26But I'm talking like every little thing that you can think
- 6:30of. I'm grateful that I can buy
- 6:32food. I'm grateful that I can get, you
- 6:35know, time with my family, my chickens, grateful that I have
- 6:41these amazing creatures that I get to spend time with and then
- 6:43a coop. But also every time I go pick up
- 6:46an egg out of the coop, I can say I'm so grateful for these
- 6:49eggs. I'm so grateful for the time
- 6:51that I get to spend with my chickens and watching them grow
- 6:55and seeing them hatch their own eggs and having the babies
- 6:58around. I'm grateful that I get to be
- 7:00able to free range them and let them have a great life in the
- 7:04space that we're in. All little tiny things, it
- 7:07doesn't matter. Pine cones, I don't care what
- 7:10you find. And I said pine cones because
- 7:12I'm out in there chicken coop and I see pine cones all over
- 7:14the ground. It doesn't matter.
- 7:17You can have gratitude for any little tiny thing if you pause
- 7:21and just think about it. And part of this practice is in
- 7:25the pause as well, because you know, before you actually create
- 7:29a reaction or a response, we're hoping you're going towards the
- 7:32response part. You have to pause.
- 7:34And if you've done any of research, you understand then
- 7:37that that breath and that one breath moment you can catch
- 7:41yourself and say, OK, what's the direction I want to go?
- 7:44What do I want to feel? And I'm just telling you, that's
- 7:46the moment where you say I can be grateful for this, or I am
- 7:49grateful for this, or I'm so excited about this.
- 7:53Work your way towards acknowledging those tiny, tiny
- 7:56things and develop this gratitude practice.
- 7:59And I promise you, your days will change and fewer and fewer
- 8:03things will irritate you, my friends.
- 8:05And better and better things will come your way.
- 8:08Because the more thoughtful you are and your gratitude, the more
- 8:11grateful you are about things, the more flows into your life.
- 8:16So practice, practice, practice, and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 8:19Bye.
