Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This program, some video and audio portions of which were pre-recorded,
- 0:04Speaker 1: is brought to you in living color on NBC.
- 0:18Speaker 2: It's Hollywood's biggest night, the Meltdown Awards.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the Academy of Motion
- 0:25Speaker 1: Picture Arts and Sciences, An Academy Award winning producer himself.
- 0:29Speaker 2: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 0:31Speaker 3: I'm Jacqueline.
- 0:32Speaker 4: And I'm Ben.
- 0:33Speaker 2: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 0:35Speaker 2: the Oddity Studios Pavilion, home of this year's Meltdown Awards.
- 0:44Speaker 2: There are a lot of award ceremonies out there around
- 0:47Speaker 2: this time of year in particular. But as usual, we
- 0:50Speaker 2: here at Movie Meltdown, we feel that they don't all
- 0:53Speaker 2: get it right. Some of them just screw it up
- 0:55Speaker 2: and give the award to the wrong movies. Some of
- 0:57Speaker 2: them completely overlook smaller films, more obscure films, weird performances
- 1:05Speaker 2: and or personalities. So we've done what we can to
- 1:08Speaker 2: create our own award and fill in the blanks and
- 1:12Speaker 2: take care of these people that are getting overlooked by
- 1:14Speaker 2: the bigger awards. Which I did want to get into...
- 1:20Speaker 2: So there was a whole big thing going into the
- 1:22Speaker 2: Grammys about where the voting was coming from. And people
- 1:28Speaker 2: got all bent out of shape about it. And we're like,
- 1:31Speaker 2: some people weren't going to perform. And some people were,
- 1:34Speaker 2: I don't know, it just became a huge scandal. And
- 1:36Speaker 2: I don't really understand. I'm like, for anyone else in
- 1:39Speaker 2: the world, like maybe for the performers, it makes some
- 1:42Speaker 2: sort of difference. I don't know. But to me, I'm
- 1:43Speaker 2: watching it going, who cares? These people I don't know
- 1:47Speaker 2: that are voting that's not me get to make the
- 1:49Speaker 2: decision versus these people over here I don't know that
- 1:52Speaker 2: are not me that are making the decisions. Like, what
- 1:54Speaker 2: difference does it make? I don't know where the hell
- 1:56Speaker 2: any of these decisions come from. So, I don't know.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Does anybody care who votes for these? Other than, obviously,
- 2:02Speaker 2: the foilers. The important awards, which is you people out
- 2:05Speaker 2: there listening right now. The only thing, I guess, what.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Was it with the Grammys that the people that are
- 2:10Speaker 3: voting are not necessarily going to even, like... be hip-hop
- 2:15Speaker 3: fans so they're less likely to have voted for it
- 2:18Speaker 3: so it's like if you're not gonna be but i
- 2:21Speaker 3: don't know i don't really remember that whole scandal so.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Again it was a couple weeks ago and we've already
- 2:26Speaker 2: already been like whatever i didn't really it was almost
- 2:29Speaker 2: over by that night because they didn't even bother mentioning
- 2:31Speaker 2: it because there was a new thing to get upset
- 2:34Speaker 2: about so i don't.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Know but no i didn't i don't really care about
- 2:37Speaker 3: any of that i mean you know that Whatever they
- 2:40Speaker 3: come up with, whatever the voting is, like, that's not
- 2:42Speaker 3: some kind of objective truth. It's just some people think this.
- 2:45Speaker 2: And that's what I think with all of them. Like,
- 2:47Speaker 2: even the Academy. I'm like, every year, like, I watch it.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It's fun. I still like the sort of history of
- 2:51Speaker 2: it and the pageantry of it. But I'm just like,
- 2:55Speaker 2: because it gets this dumb statue doesn't mean it's really
- 2:57Speaker 2: any better. Don't get me wrong. I'll gladly accept one
- 3:00Speaker 2: if they'd like to give me an Oscar. But... I'm like,
- 3:02Speaker 2: it doesn't really mean it's any better than any other movie.
- 3:05Speaker 2: It just won this award. The whole thing is a game.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You played the game the best. You won the prize.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Here you go. But it doesn't like artistically trying to
- 3:15Speaker 2: award one thing better than another is kind of bullshit anyway.
- 3:18Speaker 3: There's a formula to it. Like that's why at the
- 3:21Speaker 3: end of the year there's Oscar season when you see
- 3:23Speaker 3: all these movies coming out that fit their particular profile.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Checklist.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 3:28Speaker 4: I just, I feel like, well, with the Grammys, like,
- 3:31Speaker 4: I've never really been invested in, like, the, like, who
- 3:36Speaker 4: gets those awards, like, even more than the Oscars. Like,
- 3:40Speaker 4: I think that the Grammys are just, like, a total, like,
- 3:42Speaker 4: promotional stunt.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 4: For, like, whatever new artist that year, like, had their
- 3:47Speaker 4: first album. Because it feels like, I don't know, like,
- 3:51Speaker 4: I feel like, just, like, I remember, like, Taylor Swift, like,
- 3:54Speaker 4: when she, like, blew up, like, she swept... And then
- 3:58Speaker 4: whatever new pop artists, I don't know. I don't even know.
- 4:03Speaker 2: This year, it was well-deserved. That's the thing. It swept
- 4:06Speaker 2: this year, and I was like, good. I think she
- 4:07Speaker 2: deserves it.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 4: I think Billie Eilish is a genius. Yeah, I was
- 4:11Speaker 4: going to say, I don't think I've even heard one
- 4:13Speaker 4: of her songs. So maybe she did.
- 4:15Speaker 2: That's why I'm so amazed by her. And for the
- 4:19Speaker 2: longest time, I had no idea this other detail. But
- 4:22Speaker 2: I'm listening to her, and I'm like, she's a really
- 4:24Speaker 2: good songwriter. And it was only recently that I went, wait,
- 4:27Speaker 2: she's how old? She was like a child writing the,
- 4:30Speaker 2: I'm like, how do you get to be that good
- 4:32Speaker 2: a songwriter when you're, I mean, she had to be
- 4:34Speaker 2: like 15 on that her first album with some of
- 4:37Speaker 2: the stuff she's writing. I was like, how the hell
- 4:38Speaker 2: do you get to be this polished a songwriter? So again,
- 4:42Speaker 2: in that case, you know, most years I could care less,
- 4:44Speaker 2: but I was kind of happy as she like stuck
- 4:47Speaker 2: it to the older artists. I'm like, good. Cause you're
- 4:48Speaker 2: really talented. So who cares?
- 4:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And it's going to be on the Oscars too. For
- 4:54Speaker 2: no other reason, I think just because she's super popular.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Because her song that she's doing for a soundtrack doesn't
- 4:59Speaker 2: come out until next year, so she'll be back to
- 5:01Speaker 2: perform next year. I'm only guessing when it gets nominated, but.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't typically listen to a lot of pop music,
- 5:09Speaker 3: so there's a lot of the times that I'm just like,
- 5:11Speaker 3: the Grammys is mostly really popular artists that year, and
- 5:14Speaker 3: I just haven't had a chance to really listen to it,
- 5:17Speaker 3: so I'm not invested.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I did.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Everyone has listened to Lil Nas X at this.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Point, and fortunately that one song.
- 5:27Speaker 3: But those outfits are fire i was a big fan
- 5:30Speaker 3: that's the thing the sweet gay cowboy goodness this year.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I just wish that song didn't get so annoying and
- 5:37Speaker 2: he wasn't working with i already have no respect for
- 5:40Speaker 2: him like well now seems pretty cool actually like i
- 5:43Speaker 2: like i like him as a person i don't really
- 5:46Speaker 2: need to hear that song He's got other songs, too. Yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 2: I know, but that's the only one they play. That's
- 5:51Speaker 2: the only one they play. Much like most of the
- 5:53Speaker 2: music industry. Oh, well. We'll get to our music picks later. So,
- 6:03Speaker 2: as you guys were coming in on the red carpet,
- 6:07Speaker 2: we'll go back over it now. As always, it's not,
- 6:11Speaker 2: who are you wearing? Here at the Meltdown Awards, it's,
- 6:14Speaker 2: what are you wearing? So... I myself dug out this
- 6:18Speaker 2: fine Iron Man, specifically from one of our nominees several
- 6:24Speaker 2: times over, I believe. No spoilers. Yeah, it's from Endgame
- 6:28Speaker 2: in particular, and it's a fine t-shirt with Iron Man
- 6:32Speaker 2: on it. I try not to wear anything other than
- 6:35Speaker 2: jeans if I can help it. And these bitchin' chucks
- 6:39Speaker 2: here are limited edition, no longer being made, thank you
- 6:43Speaker 2: very much. And yes, everyone's favorite movie, Suicide Squad, is
- 6:46Speaker 2: what they're tied to. That's hilarious. He is the light,
- 6:51Speaker 2: the way. So, yeah, be glad you don't have those.
- 6:55Speaker 2: But Chucks are awesome, so that's mine. Do you have
- 6:58Speaker 2: any wonderful fashion tips you'd like to pass along with
- 7:02Speaker 2: your red carpet outfits this evening?
- 7:04Speaker 3: I have distressed tights today. That means they have holes
- 7:08Speaker 3: in them.
- 7:09Speaker 2: You paid a lot extra for that.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Because I put them on too quickly. Okay. I have
- 7:13Speaker 3: a floral dress from a clothing swap. Ah. That means,
- 7:18Speaker 3: you know, you don't even have to spend a penny
- 7:20Speaker 3: on it.
- 7:20Speaker 2: You are so trendy.
- 7:22Speaker 3: And I have, with my glasses today, I have a
- 7:26Speaker 3: little lanyard that's beaded, kind of like how old people
- 7:29Speaker 3: have with their readers. And it's just a really nice
- 7:32Speaker 3: fashion accessory that really catches the eye. No pun intended.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Or pun intended. It works either way.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Well, I have been out....
- 7:47Speaker 6: Styles.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Stylin'. Stylin' is what we're looking for.
- 7:52Speaker 4: So I'm just wearing, like, just a regular flannel button-up.
- 7:58Speaker 2: If I wasn't so hot, I would also have my
- 8:00Speaker 2: flannel on.
- 8:00Speaker 4: From fuckin' Macy's or somewhere.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Lacey's.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Like, uh... I guess... Man, I'm, like, There is no
- 8:11Speaker 4: way to tie any of this to a movie.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Actually, I didn't even realize the shoes until I put
- 8:18Speaker 2: them on and went, oh, they are actually a movie
- 8:20Speaker 2: tie-in because I'm a dork.
- 8:22Speaker 4: And I'm wearing some tennis shoes. Probably inappropriate for the weather,
- 8:29Speaker 4: but I just want to pay tribute to my idol Kobe.
- 8:37Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I don't know. So there's no significance in any of
- 8:44Speaker 4: my clothing, unfortunately.
- 8:46Speaker 3: But that in and of itself is its own statement.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yeah, you're really going out of your way to make
- 8:50Speaker 2: a statement if you're not making a statement.
- 8:52Speaker 4: I was hoping you guys would pick up on that. Yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 4: that was 100% my plan. Thank you for noticing.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You and your weird political nonsense you're trying to put
- 9:00Speaker 2: out there with some sort of statement. I don't understand
- 9:03Speaker 2: most of them.
- 9:03Speaker 7: It's fine.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Well, as usual in all of our years, this also
- 9:09Speaker 2: centers around, you know, food. So, as we've gotten further
- 9:13Speaker 2: away from the... We've always been centered around food, but
- 9:17Speaker 2: I'm trying to branch out. Since we've broken away from
- 9:20Speaker 2: a specific ceremony and we are our own ceremony, now
- 9:23Speaker 2: I just thought we'd go with a fancy awards dinner.
- 9:26Speaker 2: And so we have fancy hors d'oeuvres. Look, there's... It
- 9:31Speaker 2: has to be fancy. There's frilly toothpicks in there. You
- 9:33Speaker 2: can't question it. I mean... Now it's a meatball with
- 9:37Speaker 2: some hash browns stuck on top of it there, but
- 9:40Speaker 2: you know.
- 9:40Speaker 3: And really fancy pizza rolls. Like they're gourmet pizza rolls.
- 9:45Speaker 2: They're so fancy, they don't even have pizza roll innards.
- 9:47Speaker 3: This one, the ham and cheese one, has like some
- 9:51Speaker 3: kind of texture on it.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:52Speaker 3: And that's really nice.
- 9:54Speaker 2: That was the thing as I got that. I didn't
- 9:55Speaker 2: realize there were as many options in there. I thought
- 9:58Speaker 2: it was just like maybe tube. then i was like
- 10:00Speaker 2: well how the hell are you gonna know the difference
- 10:02Speaker 2: but then each one is its own weird this one's
- 10:04Speaker 2: a little weird square thing and then.
- 10:08Speaker 3: That's a diverse and interesting bite.
- 10:11Speaker 2: That one's round this one's rectangle i mean they're all
- 10:14Speaker 2: very different and fancy extra fancy with this frilly toothpick
- 10:19Speaker 2: hey park what is.
- 10:19Speaker 8: That don't bother me now sweetie can't see i'm busy
- 10:23Speaker 8: yeah but what is that it's.
- 10:24Speaker 2: A major award on the foiler it's the reason we're
- 10:28Speaker 2: all here it's the foilers look at it in all
- 10:32Speaker 2: its majesty listen to it in all its foiliness.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Most expensive foil.
- 10:40Speaker 2: On the market $ 4.
- 10:40Speaker 3: 99 for a roll.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I think it was. This was like the industrial kind
- 10:44Speaker 2: for like grilling or something. I don't know. It was
- 10:47Speaker 2: in a different colored box that I didn't really realize
- 10:49Speaker 2: until I got home and went, what is this? It's
- 10:51Speaker 2: still foil, right? Yeah, it's foil.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Holds its shape better.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Industrial strength just for foilers.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I still have a Polaroid from one of the foilers
- 11:01Speaker 3: from like four years ago.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I've got. That's right. I forgot you just got that camera.
- 11:06Speaker 2: You're like, let's use it for nonsense like foilers. My
- 11:10Speaker 2: favorite is still, you know, the boiler with the dog action.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I think I posted that on the website after all
- 11:16Speaker 2: the nominees. It was just like, and here's the real
- 11:19Speaker 2: boiler winner. Speaking of nominees, now that we have the
- 11:25Speaker 2: addition of Meltdown Horror Club, Movie Meltdown itself has been
- 11:28Speaker 2: nominated for the prestigious Rondo Award this year. I don't
- 11:32Speaker 2: know if you guys have caught that, but. it's pretty awesome. And, um,
- 11:36Speaker 2: thanks to the awesome listeners who, who nominated us and
- 11:40Speaker 2: got it on the ballot. So we are legitimately on
- 11:42Speaker 2: the ballot next to many bigger, fancier, uh, shows. So
- 11:47Speaker 2: I'm glad to be involved in part of the fun.
- 11:49Speaker 2: If you'd like to vote for us, um, you can
- 11:52Speaker 2: go to Rondo award.com. You just send them an email
- 11:55Speaker 2: and you vote for us. We're like, again, they have
- 11:58Speaker 2: to break down. Everything has to be 14 layers in
- 12:01Speaker 2: because nobody knows how any of this nonsense works. Anyway,
- 12:04Speaker 2: So it's number 19 is best multimedia site, podcast, videos, ellipses.
- 12:10Speaker 2: We don't know. Hell, it could be anything because the
- 12:13Speaker 2: internet's full of all kinds of crazy people. So we
- 12:16Speaker 2: are some of those crazy people. So go vote for
- 12:18Speaker 2: us and we'll win our own award, which the trophy's badass.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It's almost as cool as a boiler. Almost. All right.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Are we ready to get into the action?
- 12:33Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Now, this year, again, I'm upping the ante every year.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'm trying to make it more fun, more interactive for
- 12:41Speaker 2: all parties. So not only does everybody at home get
- 12:44Speaker 2: a chance to nominate people and get involved, but usually
- 12:48Speaker 2: it's me reading a lot of crap. So this year,
- 12:50Speaker 2: I thought I'd go completely awards ceremony style. We have envelopes.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And you guys can read the winners. Oh, wow. How
- 13:00Speaker 2: excited are you?
- 13:01Speaker 3: I'm super excited.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I feel so privileged.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I'm going to be like, La La Land.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Oops. Sorry, Moonlight. I tried not, it took a long
- 13:11Speaker 2: time to do these because I was trying not to
- 13:13Speaker 2: Moonlight any of them. I was trying not to mix
- 13:14Speaker 2: them up and be like, this doesn't even make sense.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Not that any of our categories make sense, but I
- 13:20Speaker 2: believe it's all right. I swear.
- 13:23Speaker 7: Maybe. Possibly.
- 13:25Speaker 2: So with that, kicking things off is the most questionable
- 13:29Speaker 2: career decision made by an actor, actress, or filmmaker in 2019.
- 13:34Speaker 2: These are the ones I like to throw out and
- 13:36Speaker 2: just see the real.
- 13:37Speaker 4: World come in.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Because usually you just get nothing but the finished product.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I think that's only half of what's going on every year.
- 13:45Speaker 2: There's tons of behind the scenes real world stuff that
- 13:48Speaker 2: factors into all of this. So I like to hear
- 13:50Speaker 2: people's thoughts on these type of things. We were trying
- 13:55Speaker 2: not to get into this first nominee beforehand because I
- 13:59Speaker 2: was like, just save it because we're going to go
- 14:01Speaker 2: into it. Because our first nominee for this is Tom
- 14:05Speaker 2: Hooper for making Cats. I believe Tom Hooper is an
- 14:09Speaker 2: Oscar-winning director, and he chose to make Cats. Like we're speechless.
- 14:19Speaker 3: We're just speechless.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing. This is what I don't understand,
- 14:23Speaker 2: is people saw the trailer, and then they lost their mind,
- 14:26Speaker 2: and were like, what the hell? This looks stupid. And
- 14:28Speaker 2: I'm like, did no one see the play?
- 14:31Speaker 3: Okay.
- 14:31Speaker 2: The play has been around for like what 30 years
- 14:35Speaker 2: or more like it's been like the biggest thing in
- 14:37Speaker 2: the world on broadway guess what it's the same dumb
- 14:40Speaker 2: thing in the play because somehow i got i think
- 14:44Speaker 2: i was like so it was so long ago i
- 14:47Speaker 2: was young and ignorant and i just didn't even know
- 14:49Speaker 2: what the hell it was i just knew by the
- 14:51Speaker 2: time it made it to our dumb city and it
- 14:53Speaker 2: was already like a huge thing on broadway and at
- 14:56Speaker 2: at that point i think i because i do legitimately
- 14:58Speaker 2: like phantoms i like Maybe I'd already seen Phantom. And
- 15:01Speaker 2: I'm like, all right. My friend wanted to go. Like, sure,
- 15:03Speaker 2: let's go see Cats. I sat there the whole time going,
- 15:07Speaker 2: when's the story going to start? Yeah, we've been introducing
- 15:11Speaker 2: characters for like an hour now. When's the story going
- 15:15Speaker 2: to start? That's it. That's it. There is no story.
- 15:17Speaker 2: It legitimately is taken from a book that just runs
- 15:21Speaker 2: down a list of cats. And the play runs down
- 15:24Speaker 2: a list of cats. And they all have a dumb song.
- 15:27Speaker 2: And that's what the movie is, too. Guess what? In fact...
- 15:29Speaker 2: In the trailer, I was watching it going, it already
- 15:31Speaker 2: seems like they're trying to put a plot in there
- 15:33Speaker 2: that some sort of the end of the night you
- 15:36Speaker 2: get to be a cat and graduate up and be
- 15:39Speaker 2: a person or I don't know. It's some sort of
- 15:41Speaker 2: magical thing that gets worked in in the trailer. Thankfully,
- 15:44Speaker 2: I haven't watched the movie yet, but I'm like, they're
- 15:47Speaker 2: already trying to do more than the play did. But
- 15:49Speaker 2: why did nobody get upset about the play being a
- 15:52Speaker 2: dumb concept? But they're going to lose their shit. Because
- 15:55Speaker 2: now we're dealing with dumb movie people. And somehow theater
- 15:59Speaker 2: people are more civilized and cultured. Is that what we're saying? Sadly,
- 16:04Speaker 2: it's kind of true, probably.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I don't even know. Like, I've seen Cats, like, the
- 16:10Speaker 4: play or musical, like, when I was, I don't want
- 16:14Speaker 4: to say, like, six.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Again, yeah. A long time ago for me.
- 16:18Speaker 4: I didn't, like. I didn't really understand like the purpose
- 16:23Speaker 4: of it.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I knew that. I didn't either. Thank you.
- 16:26Speaker 4: I mean, I guess I knew that I was like, Oh,
- 16:28Speaker 4: well it has songs and it's like very flashy and
- 16:31Speaker 4: people are dancing and it's just like this one junkyard set. Uh,
- 16:36Speaker 4: you know, I guess like people just are impressed by
- 16:39Speaker 4: like the, you know, the makeup or I don't know
- 16:42Speaker 4: like what it is. Like they think it's like, Oh,
- 16:45Speaker 4: people are just as cats. That's like, That's.
- 16:48Speaker 2: What I think is so ridiculous. The thing that totally
- 16:51Speaker 2: won people over as a Broadway show is what killed
- 16:55Speaker 2: it as a movie. People just raked it over the
- 16:58Speaker 2: coals because of the creepy looking people CG'd into cats.
- 17:02Speaker 2: And I'm like, that's all they went on about when
- 17:04Speaker 2: it was a big thing on Broadway is like, oh,
- 17:07Speaker 2: the makeup and the costumes.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I think it was definitely a product of its time.
- 17:12Speaker 4: I think that it came out in the early 80s
- 17:15Speaker 4: when musical theater was... pretty straightforward.
- 17:19Speaker 2: As far as... And that's the first, like, big budget. Like,
- 17:22Speaker 2: that was the Star Wars of Broadway, essentially. Like, it
- 17:25Speaker 2: became super mainstream. Regular people went and saw it. It
- 17:28Speaker 2: stayed there for, like, 20-some-odd years. Like, it just was
- 17:32Speaker 2: a huge hit the way things hadn't been on Broadway before.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Have you guys seen Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt?
- 17:40Speaker 2: Anyways, it's... Yes. Okay, cool.
- 17:42Speaker 3: So they cover the topic of cats, the play. And
- 17:46Speaker 3: in the show.
- 17:48Speaker 3: They make it so that the only way to get
- 17:51Speaker 3: cast on Cats is if you sneak onto the set
- 17:56Speaker 3: in your own made-up dumpster costume. And you just jump
- 18:01Speaker 3: in there and start doing your little song. And that
- 18:06Speaker 3: is the mythos of how Cats exists and continues to exist.
- 18:10Speaker 3: It's just weird out there Cats fans trying to make it.
- 18:14Speaker 3: And I like that take on Cats.
- 18:16Speaker 4: The purpose of it. You know, that kind of puts
- 18:20Speaker 4: things into perspective. Like, I feel like, oh, okay, if
- 18:23Speaker 4: that's how it was, like, made or conceived as a play, like,
- 18:27Speaker 4: they just let whoever show up dressed in, like, dumpster
- 18:31Speaker 4: attire and just sing whatever. Like, yeah, oh, okay. Like,
- 18:37Speaker 4: that's a neat concept. It reminded me a little bit of,
- 18:40Speaker 4: have you guys seen that Merrily We Roll Along documentary
- 18:45Speaker 4: basically about Like, Stephen Sondheim and this, like, cast of, like,
- 18:53Speaker 4: unknown musical theater people, like, in the early 80s made this, like,
- 19:00Speaker 4: really bad musical, supposedly. I haven't seen it, but, like,
- 19:02Speaker 4: this musical that, like, totally, like, tanked, got terrible reviews, and, like,
- 19:07Speaker 4: they just, like, fired everyone and, like, just tried to
- 19:10Speaker 4: forget about it as, like, a painful memory. And, like,
- 19:13Speaker 4: the documentary was just interviewing everyone, like, now. Like, on
- 19:17Speaker 4: their experience of it. And I'm just thinking, like, so
- 19:22Speaker 4: what kept Cats? Like, how did Cats make it? And
- 19:28Speaker 4: this other musical, which they show segments of, which at
- 19:32Speaker 4: least it had, like, a plot and a story structure. Like, wow, okay,
- 19:37Speaker 4: the Cats became, like, this great success. And this other thing...
- 19:44Speaker 4: was like totally sabotaged. My, like conspiracy theory, my brain, um, like,
- 19:51Speaker 4: likes to think that maybe, like, I don't know, we're
- 19:53Speaker 4: like Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber, like, rivals. And, like,
- 19:57Speaker 4: there was some kind of, like, behind the scenes, like, plot.
- 19:59Speaker 4: He's like, he... He shan't make a play that's better
- 20:03Speaker 4: than my cat's musical.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I can see.
- 20:08Speaker 4: And there was some kind of, I don't know. But anyway, yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 4: I guess I don't have a good taste for what
- 20:16Speaker 4: is a good musical and what isn't.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I don't either.
- 20:20Speaker 4: I just don't understand.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I'm so hit and miss in musicals in general. And
- 20:24Speaker 2: then I realized it started following a pattern. And this
- 20:27Speaker 2: is also why cats wouldn't work. Nobody dies there. not
- 20:31Speaker 2: that i remember anyway but i mean most of mine
- 20:33Speaker 2: are you know you gotta kill people for me to
- 20:36Speaker 2: care yeah like jesus christ superstar there's a big death
- 20:40Speaker 2: there a couple of them actually phantom he kills some
- 20:43Speaker 2: people i was like yeah i can get on board
- 20:46Speaker 2: with these and then even like little shop of horrors
- 20:49Speaker 2: i can get on board with uh uh what's the
- 20:53Speaker 2: barber shop the the Sweeney Todd. Sweeney Todd. There you go.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Murdering people. It all makes sense then. I understand those.
- 21:00Speaker 2: That makes sense. As long as you kill people, I'm
- 21:02Speaker 2: okay with singing and dancing.
- 21:04Speaker 4: What are the stakes? How is this rooted in any
- 21:07Speaker 4: kind of culture or time? I guess it takes place
- 21:11Speaker 4: in London in like an alley. But, you know, beyond that,
- 21:15Speaker 4: like what is the significance of these cats singing about
- 21:19Speaker 4: their names and, you know, what their like thing is?
- 21:25Speaker 4: I'm this cat and this is how I am. That's
- 21:29Speaker 4: the whole play of cats. I don't know.
- 21:34Speaker 2: The only thing I'll give it, Memory is a good song.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I remember even hearing, that's the only thing I took
- 21:41Speaker 2: away from seeing it that first time. It was like,
- 21:44Speaker 2: whoever they got to do that part nailed that and
- 21:47Speaker 2: hits that big note at the end. I'm like, whoa,
- 21:49Speaker 2: that was impressive. That's all I took away. I'm like,
- 21:52Speaker 2: that song's good. Way to go, Andrew Lloyd Webber. You
- 21:55Speaker 2: wrote that good song. The rest of this bullshit, I
- 21:57Speaker 2: don't know. I don't get it. So again, if you
- 21:59Speaker 2: give it to Jennifer Hudson, this should work, right? But
- 22:03Speaker 2: it couldn't save it, I suppose, because it's just not... Yeah. Anyway.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Next up. I figured we had to get a lot of...
- 22:13Speaker 2: There's a little more coming, though. I know there's a
- 22:16Speaker 2: few people that have written in with smart-ass comments about cats,
- 22:19Speaker 2: but for now, I thought we'd get our cats out
- 22:21Speaker 2: of the way, so The next nominee is for the most,
- 22:27Speaker 2: I can't even remind you, most questionable career decision, and
- 22:31Speaker 2: it totally fits this one. Liam Neeson's Cold Pursuit press tour. Yeah,
- 22:37Speaker 2: you really should have thought what you were saying. Through before,
- 22:41Speaker 2: I forgot, it was the very beginning of this year.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I forgot that was this year. And I was like, yeah,
- 22:45Speaker 2: you really... you know there's microphones on man you can't
- 22:49Speaker 2: like i know that's not what you were trying to
- 22:51Speaker 2: say but it doesn't matter like you're gonna ruin your
- 22:54Speaker 2: career so he he might pull out of it i
- 22:56Speaker 2: don't know but yeah liam get it together.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Man yeah i actually did end up seeing that movie oh.
- 23:05Speaker 2: The movie i don't i don't have any problem with
- 23:08Speaker 2: the movie it's it's like escalated beyond oh yeah like
- 23:12Speaker 2: it's a it's a joke commentary on his movies like
- 23:16Speaker 2: everything he's made from the time he became an action
- 23:19Speaker 2: star as an old man It's making fun of those, essentially.
- 23:23Speaker 2: There's a running body count that pops up on screen.
- 23:27Speaker 2: It's making fun of that, but just subtle enough that
- 23:30Speaker 2: I feel like a lot of people don't really... A
- 23:33Speaker 2: lot of your regular old film goers are just like,
- 23:36Speaker 2: I like that part where he killed that dude, but
- 23:39Speaker 2: it's kind of a commentary on it, I hate to
- 23:41Speaker 2: tell you.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Well, it's like a shot-for-shot remake of a Swedish movie with.
- 23:49Speaker 4: I think, still in Star's Guard. I looked up clips
- 23:54Speaker 4: of it on YouTube. It's the same director, just reshot
- 23:56Speaker 4: his own movie.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Which is always a weird move.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Shot for shot, same script, but just with Liam Neeson
- 24:02Speaker 4: as the main role, which was interesting. But yeah, it
- 24:06Speaker 4: is an interesting... Liam Neeson, he's got some pretty good...
- 24:10Speaker 4: He can deliver some Schwarzenegger-level silly one-liners.
- 24:16Speaker 2: And can also be a really good actor. It's so
- 24:18Speaker 2: weird that he knowingly moved into that category. After he
- 24:24Speaker 2: was a really well-respected actor, he decided, I'm really old now.
- 24:27Speaker 2: What do I want to do? Be an action star.
- 24:30Speaker 2: It's strange that he waited that long into his career
- 24:33Speaker 2: to do it. And then coming off of a pretty
- 24:36Speaker 2: high caliber, legitimately well-respected acting career and just, eh, whatever.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I know he was going through some mental stuff at
- 24:45Speaker 2: that point too, but.
- 24:47Speaker 8: Whatever.
- 24:50Speaker 2: All right, next up. And I thought this, I don't
- 24:53Speaker 2: know where I land on it now, but the first
- 24:55Speaker 2: time I walked out of the theater and the coming
- 24:57Speaker 2: soon posters were up there and I looked up and
- 25:00Speaker 2: saw who was starring in the new Dr. Doolittle. I went, wait, what?
- 25:06Speaker 2: I was like, granted coming out of Endgame. I was like, okay,
- 25:11Speaker 2: Robert Downey Jr., You're now one of the biggest names
- 25:14Speaker 2: in the world. I mean, you used to be. You
- 25:17Speaker 2: kind of fell off. And because of this franchise, you've
- 25:20Speaker 2: totally put yourself back on top. You're out of it now.
- 25:23Speaker 2: What are you going to do with your Dr. Doolittle?
- 25:26Speaker 2: So then I saw the trailer. The trailer at least
- 25:32Speaker 2: looked interesting because it didn't look like it was doing.
- 25:34Speaker 2: That was my main thing was like, don't follow in
- 25:37Speaker 2: the footsteps of Eddie Murphy.
- 25:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:39Speaker 2: His career up until recently was not something you wanted
- 25:43Speaker 2: to mimic. It took a big nosedive in the middle there, too. But, yeah,
- 25:48Speaker 2: the trailer on this one looked like Jules Verne presents Dr.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Dolittle and throw in some talking animals. So I'm like,
- 25:55Speaker 2: all right, it at least looks interesting. But, yeah, I
- 25:59Speaker 2: don't know. I don't know where it will end. I
- 26:01Speaker 2: feel like it didn't take in a ton of money.
- 26:02Speaker 2: So I don't know if it's going to be the
- 26:04Speaker 2: huge ongoing franchise that they may be expected, but... think
- 26:09Speaker 2: it's safe to assume probably questionable choice but you know
- 26:14Speaker 2: whatever all right and the again the way i set
- 26:18Speaker 2: it up because normally you'll do five and then we'll
- 26:21Speaker 2: you'll rehash one of them when you talk about the
- 26:24Speaker 2: winner i just skip that we just go with four
- 26:27Speaker 2: and then the fifth win is the winner so this
- 26:29Speaker 2: is the last of the non-winning nominees and interesting i
- 26:35Speaker 2: as i saw the movie i thought the same thing
- 26:37Speaker 2: Questionable decision, the entire cast, especially Bill Murray of Dead
- 26:42Speaker 2: Don't Die, for participating in Jim Jarmusch's ridiculous vision. Did
- 26:48Speaker 2: anyone see?
- 26:50Speaker 4: I kind of want to. You know, I heard a
- 26:53Speaker 4: lot of people didn't like it, but I have a
- 26:56Speaker 4: hard time believing that Jim Jarmusch can make a legitimately
- 26:59Speaker 4: bad movie.
- 27:00Speaker 2: And it's not, and that's the thing. I think, knowing you,
- 27:03Speaker 2: you will enjoy it.
- 27:04Speaker 4: I think I will.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Here's the difference.
- 27:05Speaker 4: I mean, I like Patterson, and I don't think anyone
- 27:07Speaker 4: likes Patterson.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Here's the difference. It's like, and this is what I
- 27:10Speaker 2: said as soon as I got out, because I'm sitting there,
- 27:12Speaker 2: and I went, like, opening weekend, and I'm sitting there
- 27:14Speaker 2: with six or eight other people in the theater, and, like,
- 27:17Speaker 2: you could tell the people that were Jarmusch fans. And
- 27:21Speaker 2: I'm like, if you like zombie movies, this is going
- 27:25Speaker 2: to frustrate the hell out of you, and you're just
- 27:27Speaker 2: going to be pissed off, and you're going to be like,
- 27:28Speaker 2: this is stupid. If you're a Jim Jarmusch fan, you'll
- 27:32Speaker 2: be like, huh, this is amusing. This is your response
- 27:35Speaker 2: to all Jim Jarmusch movies. You're just like, huh, that's interesting.
- 27:39Speaker 2: I mean, that's what he does. He makes weird arthouse
- 27:43Speaker 2: movies for weird people that like those kind of movies.
- 27:46Speaker 2: He just occasionally crosses over and is like, now I'm
- 27:48Speaker 2: also going to make a Western. Now I'm going to
- 27:50Speaker 2: make a zombie movie.
- 27:52Speaker 4: I'm waiting for his werewolf movie.
- 27:53Speaker 2: He's made a vampire movie. Vampire movie.
- 27:56Speaker 4: Ghost Dog isn't about ghosts technically, but I guess you
- 27:58Speaker 4: could qualify that.
- 27:59Speaker 2: It's in the title. So yeah, that was, that was
- 28:04Speaker 2: my takeaway. I was just like, yeah, Jarmusch fans are
- 28:07Speaker 2: going to enjoy this because it's, it's his weird sense
- 28:10Speaker 2: of humor. He's such a big name. Now everybody wants
- 28:13Speaker 2: to work with him. So that cast is amazing, but
- 28:17Speaker 2: they're all like the, the other quote we had coming
- 28:19Speaker 2: in was very short to the point, most boring film ever. Again,
- 28:27Speaker 2: this is Jarmusch for most people, like not even this movie.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Most people would be bored by a lot of Jarmusch's work.
- 28:34Speaker 2: You have to be into his style or you're just not.
- 28:37Speaker 2: There's not much middle ground on Jim Jarmusch.
- 28:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 2: So that's legit. I understand. All right. Would you like to...
- 28:47Speaker 2: Who wants the.
- 28:49Speaker 3: I'll open it. Okay. The winner is... Of most questionable
- 28:56Speaker 3: career decision made by an actor slash actress slash filmmaker
- 29:00Speaker 3: in 2019 is....
- 29:03Speaker 4: Oh my god, it's La La Land.
- 29:06Speaker 3: John Travolta for making The Fanatic.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Oh my god. Have you guys seen this movie?
- 29:14Speaker 8: Wow.
- 29:15Speaker 2: This was one I was unaware of, and if you're
- 29:18Speaker 2: listening along on the episodes... That is.
- 29:21Speaker 4: A whole separate episode itself right there, this movie.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 29:24Speaker 2: It came up on one earlier in the year, and
- 29:27Speaker 2: one of the guests was sitting here and was like,
- 29:29Speaker 2: have you seen The Fanatic? And I'm like, what the
- 29:31Speaker 2: hell are you talking about? And started describing. I was like,
- 29:36Speaker 2: first off just the premise is that a good idea
- 29:39Speaker 2: specifically for john travolta to be playing that character and
- 29:43Speaker 2: then i found out who the director was and i
- 29:45Speaker 2: was like and i was like uh So, Fred Durst,
- 29:52Speaker 2: I don't know what to tell you. If you'd like
- 29:53Speaker 2: to come pick up your foiler. I mean, technically it's John's,
- 29:56Speaker 2: but I don't know if he leaves the house. I
- 29:58Speaker 2: don't know what the rules are if it's crazy. Yeah,
- 30:01Speaker 2: you know, religion. Anyway.
- 30:03Speaker 4: In this movie, there's a scene where a guy and
- 30:09Speaker 4: his son are driving in a car and Limp Bizkit
- 30:12Speaker 4: plays on the radio. And the guy goes to his son, hey,
- 30:15Speaker 4: so you like Limp Bizkit? And turns it off.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 30:19Speaker 4: And like, it's just, the scene just plays out as
- 30:22Speaker 4: they're just like listening to a Limp Bizkit song in
- 30:24Speaker 4: the car, like just jamming. It's, I couldn't believe.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Again, keep in mind, the man who created Limp Bizkit
- 30:31Speaker 2: is behind the camera directing this scene right now. Think
- 30:35Speaker 2: about that.
- 30:36Speaker 3: Assault on your eyes and your ears.
- 30:39Speaker 4: I just, and John Travolta's character. Oh my God. Like
- 30:43Speaker 4: who agreed that it was like a good idea to like,
- 30:47Speaker 4: play i guess you could say like a person who
- 30:51Speaker 4: with like mental disabilities like in that way that's like
- 30:55Speaker 4: not been okay for like 20 years like in movies.
- 30:59Speaker 2: And it's they're trying to tie it because then they're
- 31:01Speaker 2: saying they're trying to pin down like sort of what
- 31:03Speaker 2: it is that he's suffering from but i'm like it
- 31:06Speaker 2: doesn't matter this is not gonna go.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Well for you john they didn't i think they didn't
- 31:10Speaker 4: really think that hard about it i think just he's
- 31:12Speaker 4: just like just be a weird guy and like also
- 31:16Speaker 4: just find a way to make it just, just feel
- 31:19Speaker 4: very offensive. And like every senior, like.
- 31:22Speaker 2: As I typed this in earlier, as I was making
- 31:25Speaker 2: up the list, it popped up on Google. And the
- 31:27Speaker 2: very first article that popped up is titled critics, savage,
- 31:31Speaker 2: John Travolta's career, rock bottom, the fanatic. I'm like, yeah, that,
- 31:37Speaker 2: I guess we're not the only ones on this one, John,
- 31:39Speaker 2: you've not made a few friends on this process. So,
- 31:46Speaker 2: Of the others, again, I'll occasionally throw out some other
- 31:48Speaker 2: interesting comments along the way. Other potential nominees that didn't
- 31:54Speaker 2: get any extra votes, but I thought were interesting. Kathleen
- 31:57Speaker 2: Kennedy for the lack of creative vision for the Star
- 31:59Speaker 2: Wars sequels. I was like, yeah, that's a shot that
- 32:04Speaker 2: she probably earned. Specifically just on this last one. The
- 32:09Speaker 2: other one kind of goes into the.
- 32:13Speaker 2: It is weird. These are getting bigger and bigger and
- 32:15Speaker 2: they mostly call out like Chrissy Metz for being a
- 32:18Speaker 2: pretty big celebrity and yet doing this sort of Christian
- 32:22Speaker 2: propaganda film. It is a breakthrough that again could just
- 32:28Speaker 2: be telling the story of this. It's based on a
- 32:31Speaker 2: true story, but it works in a whole lot of weird,
- 32:34Speaker 2: crazy God nonsense. So I don't know. I mean, everybody
- 32:37Speaker 2: brings their own weird step to the table, but yeah,
- 32:40Speaker 2: that one I was like, that's a, Those are getting way,
- 32:43Speaker 2: I mean, Christian film used to just be this tiny
- 32:46Speaker 2: little pocket and like it was massively low budget and
- 32:50Speaker 2: no actors. And in the last six or eight years,
- 32:53Speaker 2: it like continues to get bigger budgets and bring in
- 32:57Speaker 2: legitimately recognizable names. And it's very strange when they're crossing
- 33:01Speaker 2: over into mainstream film now. So I don't know. I
- 33:05Speaker 2: don't know what to do with it. All right. Are
- 33:08Speaker 2: we ready for the next category? The most shocking moment
- 33:12Speaker 2: In a 2019 film. And as we get into these, again,
- 33:16Speaker 2: what I realized is, because it happens to me too,
- 33:19Speaker 2: some of them I haven't seen. And I'm like, oh,
- 33:21Speaker 2: this sounds really cool. I want to go see this.
- 33:23Speaker 2: So with the ones that I think maybe need some spoiler,
- 33:27Speaker 2: I'll try to skate around it the way that I'll
- 33:30Speaker 2: praise these nominees and winners sometimes. So just a few,
- 33:36Speaker 2: I'll try to. But some of the bigger ones, I mean,
- 33:38Speaker 2: I would assume everybody by now has seen them. I
- 33:40Speaker 2: have not seen our first entry here, which is Ad Astra.
- 33:45Speaker 2: But now I need to, now that I know the
- 33:47Speaker 2: number one is Maniac Baboon in Ad Astra.
- 33:52Speaker 3: What?
- 33:52Speaker 4: Well, now I have to see this movie.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Because as you know, baboons are dangerous.
- 33:58Speaker 3: I saw Ad Astra. I would not say that's the
- 34:01Speaker 3: most shocking moment in film in 2019. I mean... I'm
- 34:05Speaker 3: not going to spoil anything, but the context is that
- 34:07Speaker 3: they're going to explore something that is maybe abandoned or
- 34:10Speaker 3: something happened, and then something happens. It's like you knew
- 34:13Speaker 3: something was going to happen, like some kind of shock
- 34:16Speaker 3: value moment.
- 34:17Speaker 2: That's what you say. That's what I say. But our
- 34:19Speaker 2: nominee-er says, I had already fallen in love with the movie,
- 34:24Speaker 2: then Facey the Monkey showed up, and I knew Ad
- 34:26Speaker 2: Astra loved me back. So you can't, you know, you
- 34:32Speaker 2: can't argue with that. Now I obviously need to see this.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Brad Pitt and a Fadey CD monkey?
- 34:38Speaker 6: Sold.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Next up, and I figured we would get to this
- 34:43Speaker 2: movie quite a bit. I'm surprised by some of the
- 34:46Speaker 2: entries along the way. Midsommar. For many different versions. Again,
- 34:53Speaker 2: I'll keep them all very.
- 34:56Speaker 8: Light.
- 34:58Speaker 2: There's something involving a cliff? There's something involving a face.
- 35:04Speaker 2: And there's a, we'll say, love scene that happens somewhere
- 35:08Speaker 2: in the middle of this movie. All those things happen,
- 35:11Speaker 2: all of which got mentioned in the nominees. All of
- 35:14Speaker 2: those things. People were like, wait, what the hell am
- 35:17Speaker 2: I watching? Along those not-so-specific lines, something irrelevant happens to
- 35:25Speaker 2: John Travolta in The Fanatic. So... That's our next nominee. Oh, yeah.
- 35:32Speaker 4: See?
- 35:33Speaker 2: That's why I'm like, I figure for people who do
- 35:35Speaker 2: know all of these, they're going to go.
- 35:37Speaker 9: Oh, yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 4: I mean, here's the thing, though. By the time that
- 35:40Speaker 4: part happens in the movie, the movie already has just
- 35:43Speaker 4: kind of blown your mind with just how insane, just
- 35:47Speaker 4: like you're like, how does this exist? So when that comes,
- 35:49Speaker 4: you're just like, of course. So that's why I had
- 35:52Speaker 4: to think for a second.
- 35:53Speaker 2: You're like, which insane part of this awful movie did
- 35:57Speaker 2: that happen? This one, the next nominee, our final nominee
- 36:02Speaker 2: I could get on board with. Shocking in the best
- 36:05Speaker 2: possible way. And this one came in close. This one
- 36:08Speaker 2: was almost the winner. We had a lot of people
- 36:10Speaker 2: that were pretty shocked and excited. As Captain America gets
- 36:14Speaker 2: to use Thor's hammer. That one I was like, yeah.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Here's our quote. I love that that was one of
- 36:22Speaker 2: the best little throwaway scenes from Age of Ultron. And
- 36:24Speaker 2: it paid off at that moment. He really was worthy,
- 36:27Speaker 2: damn it.
- 36:28Speaker 7: End quote.
- 36:30Speaker 2: That's the way I read it. You have to read
- 36:33Speaker 2: into the.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Oh, some other entries. We had Uncut Gems.
- 36:41Speaker 4: That would be mine.
- 36:42Speaker 2: That was the one I put on there. That was
- 36:45Speaker 2: their wording on it.
- 36:47Speaker 4: I literally gasped when the ending of that. I was like, whoa.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Did not see that coming.
- 36:56Speaker 2: But, none of them are the winners. So, that you liked.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Most shocking moment in a 2019 film what could it
- 37:05Speaker 4: be i agree with it and the winner is the
- 37:11Speaker 4: third act of once upon a time in hollywood.
- 37:15Speaker 2: The okay it was worded a lot of different ways
- 37:19Speaker 2: mostly just it gets very violent i know you're shocked
- 37:21Speaker 2: a quentin tarantino movie has violence in it but um
- 37:25Speaker 2: yeah i i In many ways, I think the violent
- 37:30Speaker 2: aspect caught people off guard and the time-altering, history-changing aspects.
- 37:35Speaker 4: I can imagine that would have been shocking because I
- 37:38Speaker 4: kind of vaguely knew it was coming just based on
- 37:42Speaker 4: reading opening stuff about it. I could get a sense
- 37:46Speaker 4: of where he was taking it in the context of
- 37:50Speaker 4: how he did the history revising with Bastards before.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't know it was coming, but then I
- 37:56Speaker 2: got there at that moment and went, oh, okay, he's
- 37:59Speaker 2: inglorious bastards. I mean, he's just doing this again. Okay,
- 38:03Speaker 2: I don't have a problem with it in either case.
- 38:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 38:06Speaker 2: But yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 4: It was definitely, yeah, I mean, it was very over
- 38:12Speaker 4: the top to be sure.
- 38:14Speaker 2: But again, I think, and that's the way I heard it,
- 38:17Speaker 2: which I guess if you heard this beforehand, you would
- 38:19Speaker 2: kind of see it coming maybe because people were kind
- 38:22Speaker 2: of questioning as he went into this time period and
- 38:25Speaker 2: specifically the Manson family topic, they were like, Because I
- 38:29Speaker 2: was almost dreading the end of the movie, knowing how
- 38:31Speaker 2: things turn out and knowing how much I like these
- 38:34Speaker 2: characters that we've spent time with along the way. So
- 38:36Speaker 2: I was pleased when it takes that turn. But I
- 38:40Speaker 2: think people ask, they're like, oh, so are you going
- 38:43Speaker 2: to do the murder? And the way they've... I don't
- 38:47Speaker 2: even think it was him, but the way everyone talking
- 38:49Speaker 2: about it phrased it was he loves Hollywood too much
- 38:52Speaker 2: to do that, to relive it, to make that the
- 38:55Speaker 2: big finale in his movie. So... This is a movie
- 38:58Speaker 2: that proves like what a weird old school Hollywood fan
- 39:02Speaker 2: he is so much so that he will revise history
- 39:06Speaker 2: just to have a better tale in Hollywood. All right.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Next up, the most miscast actor or actress for a
- 39:16Speaker 2: role in a 2019 film. Again, I love the way
- 39:21Speaker 2: they phrase them as they send them in. Terminator Dark Fate,
- 39:24Speaker 2: that lead actress whose name escapes me, which says a
- 39:27Speaker 2: lot about her as a leading character. lady. But no
- 39:31Speaker 2: one remembers who she is. It's Natalia Rees.
- 39:34Speaker 4: I believe.
- 39:35Speaker 2: If that's wrong, I'm sorry. Because I think she's actually
- 39:38Speaker 2: pretty good in it.
- 39:39Speaker 6: But.
- 39:39Speaker 2: I mean, that's a weird movie anyway. I enjoyed it
- 39:43Speaker 2: more than most people, I think. Because... Nobody's liked any
- 39:47Speaker 2: of these Terminator sequels. And I just keep having fun
- 39:50Speaker 2: with everything that's not that weird Christian Bale thing. I
- 39:52Speaker 2: still haven't messed with that one. But these last two,
- 39:56Speaker 2: I'm like, who cares? They're fun. Do I think they
- 39:59Speaker 2: live up to the old ones?
- 40:00Speaker 6: No.
- 40:00Speaker 2: But why do you keep revisiting this same dumb time
- 40:04Speaker 2: period and branching off? I mean, hell, the universe would
- 40:07Speaker 2: have collapsed upon itself now if you kept going back
- 40:09Speaker 2: in time to this same little 20 to 50 year
- 40:12Speaker 2: span of time and We would all be dead. So, yeah,
- 40:15Speaker 2: who cares? Don't think about it too much. Just look
- 40:17Speaker 2: for dumb explosions and robots. It'll be fine.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Yeah, someone I read posted on Twitter that, like, They
- 40:28Speaker 4: said that the Terminator franchise is really interesting. There's Terminator 1,
- 40:32Speaker 4: Terminator 2, and like 17 attempts at Terminator 3.
- 40:36Speaker 2: And a bunch of other ones. That's the thing. Like,
- 40:38Speaker 2: nobody even acknowledges that one before last happened. Like, not
- 40:42Speaker 2: only in this plot, but it's like everybody forgot that one.
- 40:44Speaker 4: I mean, there's been like four or five.
- 40:47Speaker 2: It's five.
- 40:48Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 40:49Speaker 2: It's, yeah. It's five now.
- 40:52Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 40:54Speaker 2: No, six.
- 40:55Speaker 4: Jesus.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Because there's one, two, and three, then the weird Christian
- 40:59Speaker 2: Bale one, and then two since then. So there's six
- 41:01Speaker 2: Terminator movies.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe you'd look that one up.
- 41:04Speaker 2: It's out of control. I had fun with both of
- 41:07Speaker 2: these last two. I don't know. All right. Next up
- 41:10Speaker 2: in the most miscast actor would be David Harbour in Hellboy.
- 41:16Speaker 4: Here's the thing. I thought he was actually a good Hellboy.
- 41:19Speaker 4: The movie is not good.
- 41:21Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Which is weird. Again, it's coming from a good filmmaker.
- 41:25Speaker 2: It's like they've got a budget to back up all
- 41:27Speaker 2: these effects. The effects are even easier to do than
- 41:30Speaker 2: when Guillermo was doing it. It seems like that should
- 41:33Speaker 2: have all worked, and yet none of it seemed to.
- 41:35Speaker 2: I don't know what the difference is.
- 41:39Speaker 4: Again, it's not a good movie, but there's an integrity
- 41:45Speaker 4: to it. Once you lock your brain into, okay, this
- 41:48Speaker 4: is definitely going to be a very dumb movie, But, like,
- 41:51Speaker 4: if I can just kind of, like, go with this, like, vibe,
- 41:55Speaker 4: it'll be, like, a good time. Like, it was one
- 41:57Speaker 4: of those.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Which I'm fine with on occasion.
- 42:00Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Or all the time. I'm not going to lie.
- 42:03Speaker 4: It was insanely, like, it was, like, violent to the
- 42:06Speaker 4: level of, like, I was like, holy shit. Like, I
- 42:08Speaker 4: didn't know that, like, I didn't read the comics. I
- 42:10Speaker 4: was like, I had no idea that they were going
- 42:12Speaker 4: to ramp it up this much. Just, like, going off
- 42:15Speaker 4: of the Del Toro movies. Like, it was totally, like,
- 42:19Speaker 4: they went in the other direction.
- 42:20Speaker 5: For sure.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what's weird, is because the del Toro I
- 42:23Speaker 2: don't think of as, like, dumb fun. Shut your brain off. Like,
- 42:27Speaker 2: they're pretty well written, and they have their silly moments, but,
- 42:31Speaker 2: I mean, it's still decent character development for these three
- 42:34Speaker 2: main characters. So, yeah, I don't know. It's a weird
- 42:38Speaker 2: reason that it didn't come together. It's the cats of
- 42:41Speaker 2: Hellboy movies. It's just, here's all the pieces. You figure
- 42:44Speaker 2: out why it didn't work. I don't know. Next up,
- 42:48Speaker 2: I like this. It's not even a specific film. Most
- 42:52Speaker 2: miscast actor, Adam Driver as a leading man.
- 42:55Speaker 4: No.
- 42:57Speaker 2: I disagree.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Adam Driver is an amazing actor.
- 43:01Speaker 2: I just watched Marriage Story and there was moments I
- 43:04Speaker 2: was like, holy. like he is amazing.
- 43:07Speaker 4: That's a weird that's a weird like criticism of marriage
- 43:10Speaker 4: story because like even if you're not into like the
- 43:13Speaker 4: drama like the drama of it or the seriousness like
- 43:15Speaker 4: you can't say that adam driver's bad in it like.
- 43:18Speaker 3: I think they just don't like the way he looks
- 43:20Speaker 3: and so he looks weird as a leading man.
- 43:22Speaker 4: Yeah i think it's maybe unconventional he does have an
- 43:24Speaker 4: unconventional look i guess but i mean whatever like That's
- 43:28Speaker 4: how people look.
- 43:30Speaker 2: I don't know. Their comment wasn't even specific to any movie.
- 43:33Speaker 2: It's just, I know I'll get a lot of pushback,
- 43:35Speaker 2: but I still don't get Adam Driver's assent to leading
- 43:38Speaker 2: man in so many interesting projects. Well, you're getting your
- 43:41Speaker 2: pushback from me. See, I think he's a really good actor.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Even in stuff like Black Klansman, he's sort of a
- 43:50Speaker 2: side character. He's sort of the second lead, but his
- 43:53Speaker 2: weird little going through kind of a similar... lesser but
- 43:58Speaker 2: similar version of what our lead's going through like he
- 44:02Speaker 2: just plays it like understated and really solid so yeah
- 44:06Speaker 2: i don't i don't get that but you know this
- 44:08Speaker 2: is what we get i like hearing everyone's opinion they
- 44:13Speaker 2: didn't win so don't worry about it uh next up
- 44:16Speaker 2: this is another one that i don't fully get uh
- 44:19Speaker 2: most miscast actor at mark strong in shazam i was
- 44:24Speaker 2: like i I can't imagine him playing anything else. He's
- 44:27Speaker 2: played that character every role he's been in for years.
- 44:31Speaker 4: For a second, I thought you meant Kazam with Shaquille O'Neal.
- 44:35Speaker 8: Wait, what?
- 44:35Speaker 4: Did they remake Kazam?
- 44:37Speaker 2: I mean, if you can get the funding going, Shaq's
- 44:40Speaker 2: probably up for it. He's going to be the only
- 44:43Speaker 2: thing coming back. You don't want to miss that magic.
- 44:48Speaker 2: So the other thing was another nominee that came in
- 44:51Speaker 2: was also Zachary Levi. It's miscast. Who is Shazam? So, like,
- 44:55Speaker 2: maybe that's why this didn't work so well, because neither
- 44:58Speaker 2: feels exactly right. But, actually, the Mark Strong I don't get, because, like,
- 45:02Speaker 2: that's the only thing he's played just about. Like, he's
- 45:05Speaker 2: that guy in almost every movie. At least these last, like,
- 45:08Speaker 2: 15 years, like, ever since he moved into being the
- 45:11Speaker 2: villain in every, like, semi-big-budget movie, they just keep plugging
- 45:16Speaker 2: him back in. It's like, hmm, we need a creepy
- 45:18Speaker 2: villain guy. Hey, Mark Strong! Like, it didn't surprise me
- 45:21Speaker 2: at all. But this one... Again, I'm not surprised by
- 45:27Speaker 2: people voting for this, but I don't know where I
- 45:30Speaker 2: land on it. I don't know that I disagree, but... Alright,
- 45:34Speaker 2: what's our category?
- 45:35Speaker 3: Category is Most Miscast Actor Slush Actress for Their Role
- 45:39Speaker 3: in a 2019 Film. And the winner is Will Smith
- 45:45Speaker 3: as the Genie in Aladdin. Congrats, Will Smith.
- 45:51Speaker 2: I feel like people just didn't want that to be remade.
- 45:54Speaker 2: I don't know that, I mean, I still haven't watched it,
- 45:56Speaker 2: but I mean, like, did Will Smith do a bad job?
- 45:59Speaker 2: Does Will Smith ever, like, phone it in? Alright, Gemini Man, maybe. But,
- 46:03Speaker 2: for the most part, like, he still turns in pretty
- 46:06Speaker 2: good performances, even in lesser movies, so I don't know
- 46:09Speaker 2: that he's the problem.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Again, I think that that's, like, no one, you couldn't
- 46:13Speaker 3: have casted anybody in that role and people would like it.
- 46:16Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Like, that's, that role was untouchable.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Especially who it came from, you know?
- 46:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:21Speaker 2: You're leaving Robin Williams, who... Number one, everybody loved, period.
- 46:25Speaker 2: And now that he's gone, there's this extra layer of,
- 46:29Speaker 2: oh my gosh, I miss Raleigh Williams so much. There's
- 46:31Speaker 2: so much weight that it brings to this role now
- 46:34Speaker 2: that no matter who you give it to.
- 46:37Speaker 3: I'm surprised that my entry didn't make it into the
- 46:39Speaker 3: top five. Mine was Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio. I thought
- 46:45Speaker 3: that he was... He's just too likable of a guy
- 46:48Speaker 3: for me to really believe as this super squirmy guy. Yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 46:53Speaker 3: There was something about it that I was just like,
- 46:55Speaker 3: it wasn't believable to me. I had a hard time
- 46:57Speaker 3: buying into him as Mysterio.
- 47:02Speaker 4: Was it any better than his performance in Oakjaw? Remember
- 47:05Speaker 4: him in that movie? Wait, which one? He was like
- 47:09Speaker 4: the scientist guy. He's basically like, played it like a
- 47:15Speaker 4: Saturday morning cartoon character, which I kind of love. He was,
- 47:19Speaker 4: I guess, the guy who was the host of a
- 47:21Speaker 4: safari TV show. And he's like, this is a whole movie.
- 47:26Speaker 4: It was just ridiculous. I was like, whoa, he's really
- 47:29Speaker 4: going for that. But yeah, I was just wondering, maybe
- 47:34Speaker 4: he's being typecast as a silly science person.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe.
- 47:38Speaker 4: No, I don't know.
- 47:40Speaker 2: That was just weird the way they played that. anyway
- 47:42Speaker 2: i think even at the time we discussed it it's
- 47:45Speaker 2: like it's it's a hard villain to sort of put
- 47:48Speaker 2: your finger on anyway because it's using such weird visual
- 47:52Speaker 2: illusion kind of things but they found a decent way
- 47:54Speaker 2: to spend that tech on it yeah but then at
- 47:57Speaker 2: the same time they're pulling in a super likable actor
- 48:00Speaker 2: and then he's gonna play that switcheroo of gee is
- 48:03Speaker 2: he really a good guy in this version wait we
- 48:05Speaker 2: all know he's not so why are we dragging this
- 48:07Speaker 2: out for 20 30 minutes into the movie like It's
- 48:10Speaker 2: a weird way that they play that out. So I
- 48:12Speaker 2: think that's part of it, too.
- 48:14Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 48:15Speaker 2: All right. Next up, the most impressive visuals, CG, practical
- 48:19Speaker 2: or whatever, in a 2019 film. All right. We have
- 48:24Speaker 2: the return of that Astra. Again, the way that this
- 48:28Speaker 2: comes from the fans, not me. Quote is, movie was trash,
- 48:33Speaker 2: pretty good miniatures. Was it the same.
- 48:36Speaker 4: Person who wrote in the baboon thing?
- 48:38Speaker 2: Not the same person.
- 48:39Speaker 4: I love the baboon.
- 48:41Speaker 2: Our baboon fans probably annoyed at this guy because he
- 48:44Speaker 2: did not think it was trash. He loved that movie. So, yep.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Good miniatures is what I've been told by this person.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Next up, scary stories to tell in the dark. Almost
- 48:56Speaker 2: everything in that film was practical effects. That's bonkers, is
- 49:00Speaker 2: our quote. I wish it was a better movie, but
- 49:05Speaker 2: I did think the.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Effects were cool.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's the thing. It visually found a
- 49:09Speaker 2: way to represent a lot of the cool stuff in
- 49:11Speaker 2: the stories, and then maybe they were too focused on
- 49:13Speaker 2: that and like didn't really nail the rest of it
- 49:16Speaker 2: but next up for impressive visual effects and I agree
- 49:21Speaker 2: on this one Godzilla King of the Monsters the quote
- 49:24Speaker 2: is terrible movie awesome visuals I feel like it's way
- 49:29Speaker 2: better than that other Godzilla I didn't remember hating it
- 49:32Speaker 2: like we did an episode and I tried to defend
- 49:34Speaker 2: that first Godzilla from a couple of.
- 49:37Speaker 9: Years ago that they did I like it just fine
- 49:39Speaker 9: and well i went back what are you expecting from
- 49:42Speaker 9: it i went well i went back to re-watch it
- 49:44Speaker 9: because i think i bought a copy of it but
- 49:46Speaker 9: like yeah i haven't seen this i want to watch
- 49:48Speaker 9: it again i.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Found it for cheap i'm like let's watch it i'm
- 49:50Speaker 2: like when does the fighting happen like there's just too
- 49:54Speaker 2: much talking in that first one and i think they
- 49:57Speaker 2: at least corrected going into this next one like this
- 50:00Speaker 2: latest one is a lot of fighting and a lot
- 50:03Speaker 2: of monsters and that came through for Here's the thing.
- 50:06Speaker 4: My idea of a giant monsters fighting each other movie
- 50:12Speaker 4: is I would love to actually see the monsters fighting.
- 50:16Speaker 4: I just saw the first, not this recent Godzilla movie,
- 50:23Speaker 4: but the one before it. And I was just like, man,
- 50:25Speaker 4: it's really tough to like... You can only see his legs,
- 50:29Speaker 4: or he's obscured by clouds. It's like you never really
- 50:32Speaker 4: see him.
- 50:32Speaker 2: They dragged that out for two-thirds of the movie or more.
- 50:36Speaker 2: I get it.
- 50:36Speaker 4: It's for budgetary reasons. They can't have Ali Shamar's in
- 50:40Speaker 4: broad daylight and put all that detail and shit.
- 50:43Speaker 2: I think he was almost being artsy about it. Like,
- 50:46Speaker 2: he's doing the jaws. I'm not going to show the shark,
- 50:48Speaker 2: which again was budgetary reasons in the real world. But, like,
- 50:51Speaker 2: I'm not going to show the shark until the end
- 50:54Speaker 2: of the movie. And that makes it a big reveal.
- 50:56Speaker 2: But we all know what Godzilla is. They're not keeping
- 50:59Speaker 2: it on the down low for the first half of
- 51:01Speaker 2: the movie. Like, we know what he is. Just get
- 51:04Speaker 2: to it.
- 51:04Speaker 4: Just show us our end. Well, that's why I actually
- 51:06Speaker 4: like the dumb King Kong movie that came out.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Oh, Skull Island is so entertaining. Oh, it's so dumb.
- 51:11Speaker 4: It was so fun to watch. It's so fun. Well,
- 51:14Speaker 4: you could see, like, it was all there. The action
- 51:17Speaker 4: and the effects were just very clear, like, in front
- 51:19Speaker 4: of you. And, yeah, it just knew what kind of
- 51:23Speaker 4: movie it was. It wasn't trying to be, like, a serious, like,
- 51:26Speaker 4: human nuance drama. You know, like, come on.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Which is maybe what they keep trying to do with
- 51:32Speaker 2: these Godzilla movies. Like, that whole intro with Dad and
- 51:36Speaker 2: then following the soldier boy. I'm like, I don't care about,
- 51:39Speaker 2: no offense to that kid, but, like, he just, I
- 51:41Speaker 2: don't care. Get to fighting monsters. And even this one,
- 51:44Speaker 2: there's a little too much. What's her face from Stranger Things?
- 51:49Speaker 2: And all the other crap. I'm just like, just make
- 51:51Speaker 2: them fight. And then eventually they do. And I'm like,
- 51:52Speaker 2: all right, I at least like this movie. It's entertaining.
- 51:55Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't know. They're still trying too hard.
- 51:59Speaker 2: Just let monsters fight. That's all we want. So next up,
- 52:05Speaker 2: impressive visuals. I definitely agree. Midsommar.
- 52:10Speaker 4: Yeah, that would be my pick because... I guess this
- 52:15Speaker 4: isn't specifically CGI.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's whatever.
- 52:20Speaker 4: Just the art direction in general and the color palette.
- 52:25Speaker 4: It's just like its own special effects.
- 52:27Speaker 2: There are weird effects going on.
- 52:30Speaker 3: I thought that I mean, because I've done shrooms plenty
- 52:33Speaker 3: of times, and that is the most accurate thing that
- 52:36Speaker 3: I've seen.
- 52:36Speaker 4: It was very understated, but very accurate. Like, you had to, like,
- 52:39Speaker 4: kind of look to notice it.
- 52:40Speaker 3: It was weird. Because so many other films have tried, and, like,
- 52:44Speaker 3: they always, like, make swirly colors and hallucinations. Like, you
- 52:47Speaker 3: don't hallucinate like that. Like, that's not what a hallucination is. Like, stop.
- 52:51Speaker 3: It's just, like, a little bit wiggly. Like, things are just, like,
- 52:54Speaker 3: a little distorted. And even into the acting, which is, again,
- 52:59Speaker 3: not the visuals, but... how she's reacting to things is
- 53:03Speaker 3: much more realistic where she's not like out.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Of her mind, but she's just like.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Kind of like just misinterpreting things in the same kind
- 53:12Speaker 3: of way that you would if you were tripping.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Well, those kinds of mushrooms are exactly what I was
- 53:17Speaker 2: using in these hors d'oeuvres. So just so you know,
- 53:18Speaker 2: it's going to kick in any minute.
- 53:20Speaker 3: That's what I'm feeling. It's not the wisdom tooth meds.
- 53:24Speaker 2: But the, uh, the, yeah, they specifically mentioned, uh, for
- 53:27Speaker 2: what we have two quotes. One is so pretty. So gross. Yeah.
- 53:32Speaker 9: Accurate.
- 53:33Speaker 2: Both counts. And the other one, I do remember this
- 53:36Speaker 2: moment and I'm like, good, good call. Good specific pull.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Flowers breathing. And I'm like, yeah, this is the kind
- 53:42Speaker 2: of weird shit that wins you some impressive.
- 53:45Speaker 4: Did, uh, did you guys catch the face in the
- 53:48Speaker 4: trees during that one scene?
- 53:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 53:50Speaker 4: Of like her sister. And you can see like the
- 53:52Speaker 4: tube coming out. It's, I didn't see that until the
- 53:55Speaker 4: second time I saw it. I was like, holy shit.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Like, They put a lot of work into that.
- 53:59Speaker 4: Yeah, they really did.
- 54:02Speaker 2: But, not the winner. Are we ready for the winners?
- 54:07Speaker 4: Alright, so, most impressive visuals.
- 54:12Speaker 2: CG, practical, whatever.
- 54:13Speaker 4: CG, practical, whatever.
- 54:17Speaker 2: These are very CG, is the winner, by the way.
- 54:19Speaker 4: Avengers Endgame.
- 54:21Speaker 2: You can't really fight the volume you're dealing with on
- 54:24Speaker 2: that one.
- 54:25Speaker 4: I would say that kind of falls in the tradition
- 54:27Speaker 4: of most versus best.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Yeah, which is usually how the Oscars go. That's how
- 54:32Speaker 2: sound design is. How loud was this movie?
- 54:36Speaker 3: You win.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Best visual effects is usually how much visual effects? All
- 54:40Speaker 2: of them good. You're the winner. So yeah, that may
- 54:43Speaker 2: be why. But this one, again, the only specific quote
- 54:46Speaker 2: I got was one that you don't necessarily think of.
- 54:48Speaker 2: You're probably thinking of the big in-battle scene. They specifically
- 54:52Speaker 2: brought up Tony Stark's emaciated state at the beginning of
- 54:56Speaker 2: Avengers Endgame. The effects department did a great job of
- 54:58Speaker 2: selling that he hadn't had a sandwich in a distressing
- 55:02Speaker 2: amount of time. And it's a nice bookend to the
- 55:04Speaker 2: effects of the pre-Super Soldier serum Steve Rogers in the
- 55:08Speaker 2: first Captain America film. I'm like, nice. That's a good pull.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Get it.
- 55:13Speaker 2: So, Avengers Endgame. Now, to slingshot back the other direction,
- 55:20Speaker 2: most obnoxious use of CG or other effects. Again, I
- 55:24Speaker 2: open it up to, if you're using practical wrong, hey,
- 55:26Speaker 2: that's your fault too. So, the most obnoxious use of
- 55:30Speaker 2: CG or other effects in a 2019 film.
- 55:32Speaker 4: I know what's coming in this one.
- 55:36Speaker 2: I was glad somebody put it in so I could
- 55:39Speaker 2: have a minor rant about it. The first nominee is
- 55:42Speaker 2: The Lion King. Because I've avoided it anyway. I didn't
- 55:47Speaker 2: even like it the first time around, truthfully. The only
- 55:49Speaker 2: part I liked is Scar. His crazy song is awesome
- 55:52Speaker 2: and creepy. So yeah, Scar is really a good performance.
- 55:56Speaker 2: Other than that, I don't care. I don't care about
- 55:57Speaker 2: most of it. And I know most kids did at
- 55:59Speaker 2: that point. Whatever. That aside, I was like, if you
- 56:03Speaker 2: liked the old one, you should be so pissed off
- 56:06Speaker 2: at this one. Because... The only thing they did, it's almost,
- 56:11Speaker 2: I mean, they've added a few extra songs or some
- 56:13Speaker 2: other stuff, but it's like pretty much beat for beat
- 56:15Speaker 2: the same story. And yet took all the impressive visuals
- 56:20Speaker 2: and character out of our characters. Like now they're sort
- 56:25Speaker 2: of photorealistic. I'm using air quotes that you guys can hear.
- 56:28Speaker 2: But in doing that, you've taken away all the expression. Again, like,
- 56:33Speaker 2: the creepy way that Scar, like, looks and moves and, like,
- 56:38Speaker 2: everything he does is awesome because it's done in animation.
- 56:42Speaker 2: In old school, hand-drawn, real animation. And even if you're
- 56:46Speaker 2: a computer maneuvering that around a little bit, that's fine,
- 56:50Speaker 2: but it's still, like, expressive. It's using artist style to
- 56:54Speaker 2: create the whole look of this little universe that we're in.
- 56:57Speaker 2: When you go photorealistic, you just stripped away all the character,
- 57:00Speaker 2: and that's so annoying. Like, that nobody... Nobody seemed like
- 57:03Speaker 2: they were calling anybody out for that. It still made
- 57:05Speaker 2: a bundle of money, and I'm sure we'll just continue
- 57:09Speaker 2: to get more and more dumb versions of already good
- 57:12Speaker 2: Disney movies, but I don't know. That one more than most.
- 57:15Speaker 2: I don't mind if you do something interesting with it
- 57:18Speaker 2: and change it up a little bit, but that one
- 57:20Speaker 2: just taking the most interesting thing out of it, which
- 57:23Speaker 2: was the artistic style, and then just making it dumb,
- 57:27Speaker 2: regular looking animals. Just go watch a nature documentary. They
- 57:30Speaker 2: make They make a bunch of those, too.
- 57:31Speaker 3: David Attenborough's Lion King.
- 57:34Speaker 8: Oh, man.
- 57:35Speaker 4: I would watch that.
- 57:35Speaker 2: I would watch that.
- 57:36Speaker 4: If he narrates it.
- 57:37Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 57:38Speaker 4: Totally.
- 57:39Speaker 2: He's the best. All right. Next up, for the most
- 57:42Speaker 2: obnoxious use of CGI and or other effects. This one,
- 57:46Speaker 2: I'm guessing, is CGI. The vehicle chain in Hobbs and Shaw,
- 57:49Speaker 2: where the helicopter lifts several cars and trucks off the ground.
- 57:53Speaker 2: I'm not sure how physics work. But no matter how
- 57:56Speaker 2: ripped Dwayne Johnson is, there's no way that stunt of
- 57:59Speaker 2: him holding the chain together at one point wouldn't have
- 58:02Speaker 2: ripped his manly, manly arms out of his manly, manly sockets.
- 58:06Speaker 4: If you're looking to the Fast and Furious movies for
- 58:09Speaker 4: a lesson in physics, you should look elsewhere. That's all
- 58:15Speaker 4: I'll say.
- 58:16Speaker 2: But if you just want to see manly, manly arms,
- 58:20Speaker 2: Dwayne can hook you up.
- 58:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:25Speaker 2: Next up, previously mentioned, Hellboy. I was kind of excited
- 58:30Speaker 2: to see a Neil Marshall-led version of this character. Too
- 58:33Speaker 2: bad the film failed on so many levels, including the visuals. So,
- 58:39Speaker 2: there you go. This one got a lot of nominees.
- 58:43Speaker 2: I'm surprised it didn't. Well, no, I'm not surprised once
- 58:45Speaker 2: we get to the winner. But we got a lot of...
- 58:48Speaker 2: This one, they phrased it as all of Alita Battle Angel.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Which I've surprisingly heard like a new, like when it
- 58:56Speaker 2: came out, nobody seemed to like it. And then like
- 58:59Speaker 2: as it hit DVD or streaming or whatever, like I
- 59:02Speaker 2: started getting all these people going, you know what, that
- 59:04Speaker 2: was actually pretty good. Like, so I've heard this weird
- 59:06Speaker 2: undercurrent lately of people that actually appreciate what they're doing.
- 59:10Speaker 2: there i'm still kind of overwhelmed just from the trailer
- 59:13Speaker 2: of the cg so i i i'm gonna get to
- 59:16Speaker 2: it eventually but that wasn't selling me but all right
- 59:21Speaker 2: are we ready for.
- 59:22Speaker 7: The winner.
- 59:24Speaker 8: All right.
- 59:25Speaker 3: Category is most obnoxious use of CGI or other effects
- 59:28Speaker 3: in a 2019 film.
- 59:32Speaker 2: I wonder.
- 59:35Speaker 3: And the winner is cats. Because of course it is.
- 59:41Speaker 2: Our quote is, again, the obvious answer would be Cats.
- 59:46Speaker 2: Without the weird CGI choices, it actually would have not
- 59:49Speaker 2: been entertaining at all. But I can't really think of
- 59:52Speaker 2: anything else that stands out from the movies I watched
- 59:55Speaker 2: in 2019. So I guess it's Cats, with its weird
- 59:58Speaker 2: human hands and feet that slightly hover above the ground.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: The disturbing ears that twitched and were far too forward
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: on their heads. That one that unzipped his one cat
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: skin to reveal another poorly created CGI dress underneath. The
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: terrifying mice and cockroaches. And, of course, the cat's piece
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: de resistance, Itraselba, looking way too naked, like they even
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: gave him abs with fur, but without any genitals. Kindle Itraselba,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: an image that will never leave my brain. I feel
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: like that says it all. I don't know.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: I wonder if furries were really into cats.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: America as a whole was creeped out by cats.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: It was too uncanny. I feel like they would have
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: to look like cartoon.
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: Cats.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: I mean, that's the thing. They crossed that. That was
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: the difference, I think. The old play still looked like
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: people in makeup. And you processed it as, oh, that's
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: a good makeup job on that person dancing around in
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: front of me. It's a real world thing. It's real.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: You hit the CG aspect and it's like Uncanny Valley
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: kicks in and you're like, well, well, well, well, well,
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Idris Elba looks too much like Idris Elba and he's hot,
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: except now he's a cat and he's got fur and
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: where's his genitals? And this is weird. It's yeah, it
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: is the same Uncanny Valley that we get with normal
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: super CG characters, but these are, it's too human mixed
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: with too much CG mixed with too much cat. It's
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: too much. Our brains just can't handle it. cats i
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: do like there was also a write-in vote for uh
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: the original sonic the hedgehog trailer because people were so
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: creeped out by it oh god that's funny oh lord
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: all right next up the best kill slash death in
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: a 2019 film i didn't even bother breaking it up
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: in the past i kept trying to like reword it
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: so people would stop picking like the most sad death
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: scene of my most beloved i'm like all right if
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: you want to vote for that i'll just maybe be
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: like the most awesome death and then maybe you won't
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: pick like iron man because people still voted for that
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: i'm like that's not what we're talking about like jason
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: smacking somebody in a in a sleeping bag up against
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: a tree that's an awesome death that's a movie kill
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: that's what we're here for all right that having been
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: said for future reference first up ready or not Has
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: anybody seen Ready or Not? I know one of our
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: other cast members wrote me recently and was like, oh
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: my god, that was their main thing, just voting for
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: that the whole time. This didn't even come from them,
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: but we got other write-ins that were specifically the final scene.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: A lesser film would have backed down. A lesser film
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: would have had absolutely nothing happen when we get to
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: the end of this little timeline. Or maybe they've settled
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: with some sort of boring death, but that is not
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: what happens in Ready or Not. Ready or Not is
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: like an awesome premise, and then they just kind of
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: dial it up to 11 as the action continues on,
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: and the story widens out and becomes more crazy and ridiculous.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: Ready or Not's awesome, is what I'm saying. So I
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: won't ruin anything that happens in the finale, but yeah,
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: stick around for the finale. Next up for Most Awesome Death...
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: they just wrote cold pursuit i'm guessing they mean all
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: of them because it's just a movie full of death
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: scenes so cold pursuit this one we have a nice
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: extended description if you haven't seen this i don't even
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: know that this counts as a spoiler it's just a
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: description of a lot of craziness that's about to happen
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: if you liked the new child's play Where Chucky kills
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: Karen's boyfriend by wrapping him up in Christmas lights, he's
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: trying to recover from the house and then making a
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: lawnmower run over him, which scalps him. His hair flies
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: across the backyard, which for some reason is a giant
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: watermelon patch, and the hair lands on top of, like,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: it's on a wig on one of them. It's summer,
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: so he's just now taking down the Christmas lights? Are
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: these wintermelons? Who knows? But blood spurts on the watermelons,
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: of course. And then, to make it even look more ridiculous,
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: Chucky skins him and somehow carries a watermelon and his face, skin,
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: and hair across town unseen so he can leave it
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: dressed up watermelon style on Andy's dresser with a bow. Wow.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: I mean, that's a pretty epic little murder scene we
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: just got there, so I can't argue with that. Next up,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Best death or kill. And again, it's a quick one,
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: but I agree. Thanos' first death in Endgame. It's kind
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: of what we were waiting for. It's kind of what
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: we needed after a year of waiting. We're like, for
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: the love of God, just kill that bastard. And right
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: off the bat, they did.
- 1:04:43Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: And now the winner. All right.
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: So, best kill slash death in film 2019. Dealing with
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: the family at the end of Once Upon a Time
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: in Hollywood.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Most write-ins specifically mention a certain flamethrower. There are a
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: lot of the Brad Pitt's treatment of them in the house.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: There's a lot of that as well. Personally, I feel
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: like there needs to be a special award for Brandy,
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: the breakout star.
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: Of the film.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: I mean, the dog makes the movie, if you ask me.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: That's true.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: That is the real, like.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: Dog was pretty cool.
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the real star of this film, if you
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: ask me. But yeah, they specifically wrote in, like, one
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: of the most satisfying endings to a movie I've seen
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: in a good long while. Like, yep, if that's what
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: you're looking for, this movie will deliver. Other people might
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: be caught off guard by them. It's quite an ending.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Next up, best villain in a 2019 film. I do like,
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: we haven't gotten to a ton of Joker so far.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: I do like most of what goes on in Joker.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: I don't care, whatever. That's a different discussion. But the
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: fact that Thomas Wayne is a complete and utter jackass.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: The person who we've built up as this reason that
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: Batman grows up to be. His death is so tragic
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: that it creates this wonderful superhero. But in this version,
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Thomas Wayne is a jackass. So I appreciated that. That
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: was kind of fun. So Thomas Wayne is our best
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: villain entry here. I also like this phrasing. Whoever the
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: villain was in The Lighthouse, Willem Dafoe, at least one
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: person voted specifically for Willem Dafoe. Over here I get
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Robert Pattinson question mark. It's like nobody knows what to
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: do with The Lighthouse. They're like, there's a villain somewhere.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: I don't know. The light is the enemy. The light,
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: the lighthouse, the, I don't know, flatulence, I don't know, whatever.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Next up, I surprisingly got a good amount of votes.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Octavia Spencer in Ma. She is pretty damn good in that,
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: I gotta say. Did I vote for her for that?
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: I think I did. I expected a little less in
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: this type of movie. I expected it to be a
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: little schlockier and like, she gives a pretty good performance
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: and you can kind of see her, like it starts
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: so early on and we see this, like getting a
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: little crazier as the years go on and like the
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: weird life that she structures. But if you just break
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: through that normal side, yeah, you cross over into full
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: on crazy. So yeah, Octavia Spencer. Very good. This one,
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: I'm definitely going to omit because, We'll just say, and
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: if you've seen the movie, you know who I'm talking about.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: So this makes more sense. Someone in Knives Out. There's
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: a lot of people. And one in particular is probably
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: more villainy than the others. So they're all kind of jerks.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: That's how the Knives Out works. But there is a
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: specific performance that they single out as getting better with
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: future viewings. The more you go back and watch this person,
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: the more impressive that it gets. They also... This, I think,
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: is the most important part. They say, please tell me
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: if you hear anything about the release date of the
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Knives Out sweater collection. Which is pretty... Go back and
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: watch it. There's some sweaters. And this particular person we're
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: talking about has a very impressive sweater action going on. So,
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: Knives Out sweater collection coming your way next winter. Alright, but.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: All right, category is Best Villain in a 2019 Film.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: And the winner is Thanos in Avengers Endgame.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: You can't fight it. I mean, to me, it's very different.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: I feel like it's probably more fitting this year than
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: last year. Because this year, he was back to being
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: a full-on villain. This year, we catch him at an
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: earlier point in time. and he's back to being a
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: jackass and he's back to just being an old school
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: disney villain like he really is it's last year when
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: he was getting all the acclaim that i'm just like
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: he's not your normal villain in in infinity war like
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: he's almost our lead he's almost not our villain he
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: totally makes you rethink the horrible thing that he's about
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: to do. And he shouldn't if he was an old
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: school generic villain, but he's done so well, performed and
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: written just interestingly enough that you're like, wait, what? So
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: I think I said that with the episode. I was like,
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: we almost needed him to be scaled back to a
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: more generic villain so that we could finish out the
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: story and be like, oh good, we want him to die.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: We want him to lose. We want our heroes to
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: be the heroes again instead of, wait, who's the hero
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: in this movie? It's a little more confusing in Infinity War.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: So I think this goes back to being more old school.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: And you think you're being cute when you vote for
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: Disney as the biggest villain. Don't think I didn't notice
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: you're right and vote for Disney. Blaming them for Rise
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: of Skywalker. Whatever, I see what you're doing. Next up,
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: the best monster in a 2019 film. First off, I
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: expected this. I kind of am surprised it didn't get
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: more votes. In the past, it has. Pennywise, he's still creepy.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: I'll give him the performance, the makeup, all of it together.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: He's a creepy bastard. I think the second movie has
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: a lot of problems, but none of it is him
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: not being creepy because he is still massively creepy. Next up,
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: the jangly man in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: So there you go. good creepy people issues with the
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: movie this i totally agree with have you seen bright
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: burn no the kid in bright burn this is one
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: of those i'm surprised they like got the okay to
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: make especially in this super superhero centric world that we
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: live in now like they basically just I mean it
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: is I expected him to just slightly go with it
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: it is like damn near beat for beat the Ma
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: and Paul Kent story if Superman fell on your land
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: what if he wasn't such a nice all American clean
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: cut guy what if you grew up and realized how
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: powerful you were and you could do whatever the hell
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: you wanted in this whole planet full of powerless useless
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: people were the only thing standing in your way like
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: that's pretty much how they take it and it becomes
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: a full-on horror movie midway in, you're like, oh, I
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: didn't know they were going this creepy and dark with it. Cool.
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: It's impressive, yeah. I was not expecting it to be
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: as good as it was, so Brightburn, if you haven't
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: seen it. This one got a lot of votes. If
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: it were any other year, this one might have taken it.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Goose the Flurkin in Captain Marvel. So the cat, essentially,
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: but not a cat really at all. All right, but...
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: There was an overwhelming movie that came in and stole
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: the winner here.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: I hope mine gets it.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: Best monster.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: I think everything else was from the same movie, so
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: it's at least from the right movie.
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: The winner is... King, oh boy.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: Ghidorah.
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: Ghidorah, thank you.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: I pronounced it wrong for most of my life, by
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: the way, I've realized. I thought he was awesome as
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: a kid. I've been saying his name wrong for years.
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: Is that the Hydra one?
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: It's the three heads, yes.
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: Oh, I had that action figure when I was a kid.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: But that's the thing. Like, even if it was questionable, like...
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: Who it was going to, this was the year there
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: was no question because we got, aside from all the
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: votes for that one, we got votes for Godzilla, the Behemoth,
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: which I kind of forgot about, Mothra, and Rodan.
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: Everybody got their own little group going there. We got
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: one specific, and I'm a Rodan sucker, so I'm on
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: board with this quote. Rodan finally gets his moment in
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: Godzilla King of Monsters. From a giant rubber chicken to
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: the flying condor from hell chasing down attack jets, this
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: was the moment Rodan fans need. Uh, I agree. So I,
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: I'm pretty much anybody in there. That's the thing. There
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: were people who like skipped that category and didn't, I'm
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: like in a year with a Godzilla movie, like why
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: would you, even if you don't like the movie, like
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: there's so many awesome monsters there to be like, obviously
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: this one. So, um, we can have a minor rant
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: here and it's not mine, but just to point out, um,
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: Someone wrote in a vote. Again, they like to do
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: it in the wrong categories because they think they're making
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: a point. This one, they at least have a point.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Their monster was the Academy and Golden Globe voters for
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: failing to nominate a single woman director during a year
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: with so many relative important impressive films that nobody got
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: a vote. She lists a whole lot of people here.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Just wanted to call them out. Academy and Golden Globe voters.
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: I believe her quote is, you basic. All right, next up,
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: the best action sequence in a 2019 film. The finale
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Again, we'll say.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: This one I didn't think of, and then I was like, oh, no,
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: totally an awesome action scene. The running to and or
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: from the flood in Parasite. It's a pretty impressive scene
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: for an otherwise not too huge budget kind of a project.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: It's impressive. The chase at the end of Hobbs and Shaw, again,
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: can't go too far without some Fast and Furious action. This, again,
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: I think says a lot about the year we're dealing with,
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: and I think we've run into this in the past.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: The fact that the runner-up, the one that got the
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: most votes that didn't win, John Wick 3. If you're
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: in a year when John Wick doesn't win Best Action
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: Scene in a movie that is entirely comprised of action scenes.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: I don't know. That says something.
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: I voted for John Wick, but specifically Dogs Running Up Walls.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: Dogs Running Up Walls.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: Dogs Running Up Walls.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Yeah, there was so many. It's like there was Antique Shop,
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Knife Fight. Amazing. Dogs Running Up Walls. Horses Kicking People.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: a death by book. I mean, there's so many awesome
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: things that happen in there that, yeah, we even have
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: the fighting on motorcycles in John Wick 3. I was
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: numb and checked out at this point of the movie,
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: but the scene woke me back up and got me
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: into the game. John Wick should be a 10 minute
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: long short shown before other movies. That might be true.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: Like it's, well, specifically these last two, that first one
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: I think is a solid movie that does kind of
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: have what character you're going to have in that kind
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: of movie. has a character arc to it, and is
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: telling its own little story. These last two have just
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: been a really impressive effects reel of like, hey, you
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: think we could coordinate it so this could happen and
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: somebody doesn't die? And then they actually do it. They're impressive,
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: but yeah, I feel like the only one with a
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: solid story is the first one. Alright.
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: So, best action sequence in a 2019 film.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Again, some of these you just can't fight.
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: The big dogs.
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: Finale of Avengers Endgame.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: I mean, when that much is going on, how do you...
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: There's a lot in the end of that movie.
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: Game's rigged.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: You're one of those people. You're falling into the world
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: of conspiracy people. Don't trust the mouse.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: I mean, yeah. I'm already there, friend.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: All right. Favorite score used in a 2019 film? I've
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: mixed it up here so as we go into our break,
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: we can enjoy the sounds of our winner. So this,
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: to remind you, I don't really give a rat's ass
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: what the Academy is doing. I sometimes like when people
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: repurpose and use something. So both the song and score
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: are free to be from whatever. It doesn't have to
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: be originally created. There's not a weird loophole that means
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: you don't win the award because somebody extra helped you
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: write it or it's appeared in something else before. So
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: Although I think these are all original.
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: Because Johnny Greenwood used a little bit of Arvo Pärt
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: in an otherwise long-ass movie.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: See? Sometimes they get caught up in their weird little rules,
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: so screw all that. In ours, it's just what music
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: did you like in a movie? First up is Godzilla
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: King of the Monsters by Bear McCreary. Next is Knives
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: Out by Nathan Johnson. Midsummer by Bobby... Is this Krillic?
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: I like that he's also a hazing cloak. Is that
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: his DJ name?
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he puts out albums.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: Is he Wild Side? Oh, yeah. Our comment on that
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: one is, the Midsummer soundtrack is on heavy rotation in
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: my head. Listen to it when you wake up and
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: it will put you in the perfect mood.
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: Oh, God.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: There's a lot going on in that person's head. I
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: never out the person that says it, but I know
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: that person, and there's a lot of weird things going
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: on in their head. Next up, the most conventional, and
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: it's good. 1917 by Thomas Newman. It's a good score. Again,
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: I hear a lot of influences from other stuff in it.
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: I don't know if it's the most original concept, but
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: it's a solid score. But, not the winner.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: Is it going to be Avengers Endgame?
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: No, but.
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: The category is favorite score used in a 2019 film.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: Don't worry, conspiracy theorist. We won't stray far from the mouse.
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: And the winner is John Williams for The Rise of Skywalker. Okay.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: Now, on a normal year, I would... I would, I
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: can't complain. That's a really good score. Like it shouldn't
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: be this far into his career. Go back and listen
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: to the score episode. We just did. But like we had,
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: we had two composers there and they're both like, damn,
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: this is still good. Like this far into this man's career,
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: he should be phoning it in. Like he shouldn't need
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: to do anything. But in this particular, like even some
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: of the other ones, I felt like were a little
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: like more generic, but. This last one, I guess because
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: he knew it was the last one, is solid. It
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: is really impressively put together with a lot of original stuff.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: And when he pulls from other things in his past career,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: it's bits and pieces from totally different ones. And pieces from, again,
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: not just the original like you would expect, but also
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: from weird stuff from the prequels that you wouldn't even think.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: He's finding ways... to tie all of this together, because
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: for him, this is one big, long project, and it's
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: still surprising how good John Williams' Rise of Skywalker score is.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: As we go into the score, we will remind you
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: that this year's award ceremony is brought to you by
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: Heine Brothers, so go Heine Brothers, drink some now. And,
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: of course, everyone's favorite new toy, Baron of Cage. Everyone
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: loves Baron of Cage.
- 1:20:39Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: We have just seen rushes direct from Hollywood of pictures

- 1:22:06Speaker 11: Maybe we should set him free.
- 1:22:08Speaker 10: His fur is soft, his eyes so wide.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: Why do they have him locked inside?
- 1:22:14Speaker 10: It's a bear.
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: It's a bear.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: It's a bear. It's a bear. It's a bear.

- 1:23:54Speaker 7: So, I mean.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: It kind of keeps us alive. I was discussing the
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: horrible situation it's been to try to keep things going
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: earlier to these poor bastards. Like, yeah, it's not just like, hey,
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: I'm rich and I want your money anyway. It really
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: does keep the show going to the level that people
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: don't realize. It's kind of the only way it's survived
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: this last year and a half or so since we
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: started this. Yeah, so... It is not only greatly appreciated,
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: but it gives us kind of a good way to
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: come up with something specific to put out there just
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: for these people that we know actually care enough to
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: kick in.
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: Yeah, you get a lot of great stuff for that $ 2.
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. I like being able to craft
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: something for a very special group. So you guys are
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: super cool, and then you get these awesome episodes. So
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: one more reason, go join up now. So go to
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: our Patreon page, join the Meltdown Club, become a Melketeer,
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: you get cool stuff, and you can help us keep

- 1:25:17Speaker 6: You are listening to the soon-to-be award-winning movie Meltdown.
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: And I can't deny the fact that you like me
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: right now.
- 1:25:26Speaker 11: You like me.
- 1:25:31Speaker 10: Hey, Tiny Brothers gives me the card that says you're
- 1:25:33Speaker 10: our favorite customer.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: You printed that up yourself, didn't you? Does that mean
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: you get free coffee? I get a couple free coffees.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: They love me. They're awesome.
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: I love Tiny Brothers.
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: They're great.
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: Their baristas are the best.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: It's your favorite place to go.
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: It is my favorite place to go.
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: I call it my office. And when people take my seat,
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: I get upset. But maybe you, you know, you guys
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: out there listening now, maybe you don't live near it
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: like some people live right down the street. Oh, my Lord.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: What is wrong with you? Some people don't live right
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: down the street like you do. So they have to
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: order themselves. Why do you not know how to pour coffee?
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: You took the lid off.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: Because I go to.
- 1:26:14Speaker 10: Heidi Brothers all the time and they pour it for
- 1:26:16Speaker 10: me so perfectly.
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: Put the lid back on. Now we see why she needs...
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: They never treat me this way at Heidi Brothers. So,
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: you don't have to deal with this sort of nonsense.
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: Just order it up, they'll ship it right to your house,

- 1:27:27Speaker 8: Yes, everybody's here. Tall, bashful James Stewart and the lovely girl.
- 1:27:32Speaker 8: The quite fabulous Mr. Charles Lawton with his distinguished wife,
- 1:27:35Speaker 8: Elsa Lanchester. Revered Jean Herschel and his missus, torn tonight
- 1:27:39Speaker 8: from his fireside in first edition. Did you ask for glamour, Mr.
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: And Mrs.
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: Audience?
- 1:27:44Speaker 8: Well, Hedy Lamarr's here, but darn it with her husband,
- 1:27:47Speaker 8: Gene Markey. Melvin Douglas, Helen Gahagan, Irving Pitchell.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: Everybody?
- 1:27:52Speaker 8: You bet everybody. Scarlett O'Hara, her glorious self. Vivian Lee,
- 1:27:56Speaker 8: escorted by producer David Selsman. Distinguished scion of distinguished father,
- 1:28:01Speaker 8: Douglas Fairbanks Jr. But here's Elsa Maxwell. Start the party, folks.
- 1:28:07Speaker 8: Now everything's ready to go.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: But who's going to win?
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: All right, we are back. And again, in a world
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: that we live in, we would never be the kind
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: of show that would be like thinking an actor. or
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: actress was hot we're above that but we might think
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: that someone is aesthetically pleasing and also has amazing charisma
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: and it's because of that that you're inexplicably drawn to
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: them and if you were ever in their presence you
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: would not behave creepily at all so that is sort
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: of the category we're going with now. And yes, I
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: wrote all of that on the envelope. It's even wordier
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: in its original form. So the nominees are, and again,
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: we get, this is why I started this one, not
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: to be creepy and think that people were hot because
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: people come up with totally, I love that everybody has
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: a thing that they're into and it's a different thing
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: for everybody. And I like hearing what other people like,
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: because sometimes I'm like, I don't even know who this
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: person is. Puts them on your radar. Things like, I
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: didn't expect Randall Park to come up on this. If
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: you like Fresh Off the Boat, he's the dad. He's
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: in Always Be My Maybe, and he won people over
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: on that, obviously. Sure, I can expect our next win.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Ryan Reynolds is always on there. Now, in a year
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: when he's the voice of Pikachu, is Pikachu hot? I
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: don't know. Whatever. He was our next win, Ryan Reynolds.
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: This next one, again, I question our people writing in. Shazam!
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: The character? It didn't say Levi. It's just saying. That
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: big foam chest he's wearing is hot. I don't know.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: Maybe he really worked out. Hell if I know. Next up. Oh,
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: shirtless Brad Pitt. Come on now. You can't argue. Now
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: this one has both. So does one person want to
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: read both? You'd have to wait until I get to
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: the next one. Find the boy type person first.
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: Okay, boy type person. performer that you feel is aesthetically
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: pleasing while also having an amazing charisma that you are
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: inexplicably drawn to, but if you were ever in their
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: presence in the real world, you would be completely respectful
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: and not at all creepy toward them in a 2019 film.
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: And the winner is, for a boy-type person or otherwise
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: masculine-presenting individual, is Keanu Reeves.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: You can't fight John Wick. You can't, because he'll beat
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: your ass. I've seen three movies that told me that.
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: You can't fight John Wick. See, you're cheating. You're already
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: looking at the other one.
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: I'm looking at it.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: I didn't mean to.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: I'm going to pass it to you to read, but
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: he's going to read.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: Okay, next up for... We didn't even get to the nominees.
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: Hold on. We had a lot of special... The guys
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: were pretty normal, but we had a lot of special
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: entries in the ladies. We had a vote for Mothra.
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: She is a lady. Babe. We got a comment that
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: just said Bo Peep got back. I don't know that
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: that's appropriate, but you watch what you want to watch
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: in your movies.
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: Bo Peep did have back. It was an inappropriate amount
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: of back for a children's movie. I remember thinking that
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: in the theater, like, damn.
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: But the regular-ish nominees. I do like this one. It's
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: very sappy. I'm a sap, so. Our first entry is
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: Emma Stone. She won my heart in Easy A, and
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: she hasn't let go yet. Next up is Ana de Armas.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: I don't know if that's how you pronounce it. If not,
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: please come over to my house and correct me. From
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: Knives Out, she is freaking amazing. She is one of
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: those that's only been in a handful of things that
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: I know of, but now I'm like, okay, now you're
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: going to be the star of every movie from here
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: on out because she's amazing in Knives Out. Does anybody
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: know the right way to say Lupita's last name?
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: Yongo?
- 1:32:21Speaker 3: Yongo.
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: There we go. I'm just going to butcher it as
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: the rest of these. Lupita is next. Florence Pune, star
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: of several, if not one, of our horror episodes. You remember.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: You loved that ghost movie she made.
- 1:32:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: Little did she know she had Oscar and Foiler nominations
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: coming up for her. But none of those are the winners.
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: So who is the winner for, you don't have to
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: read all that nonsense, for the girl type person? Okay.
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: The winner is Brie Larson. And I guess Captain Marvel?
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: Captain Marvel. I would say Captain Marvel because I don't
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: like her haircut in Endgame. I'm not supposed to be
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: that way, but if you remember, I spent a good
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: portion of the Captain Marvel episode talking about her bouncy, shiny,
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: amazing hair. I do remember that. It's really just a
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: slap in the face when she shows up in Endgame
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: with that weird haircut. I'm just like, what are you
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: I hope by the time we get to two, she
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: has her lovely hair back. But she can do whatever
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: she wants with it. It's not mine. And this is
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: how you know I didn't come up with these. These
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: are outsourced nominations because Park Sodam should have been in
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: there as far as I'm concerned. She's the sister in Parasite.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: She's so damn adorable. I'm watching it going, maybe I
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: shouldn't think that. How old is this girl? Because there's both,
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: I think, supposed to be almost high school age in
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: the movie. I looked it up. She's like 27. She's
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: way older than she's supposed to be playing in the movie,
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: but she is very adorable. All right, next up. The
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: 2019 movie you expected to hate but ended up enjoying.
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: I like the first one because it comes with a story.
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: Downton Abbey. Never watched the show. Taken by my wife.
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: Realized it was about people just being petty and shallow,
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: which is my favorite thing.
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: I forgot they made a Downton Abbey movie.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: I think everybody did, except Downton Abbey people, because it
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: still made a fortune, because everybody that watched the show
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: went and saw the movie. So it made good money, surprisingly.
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: All right. Next up, I like that they start off with,
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: don't judge me. Don't judge me, but Dora and the
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: Lost City of Gold. I see a movie every week
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: and my friend and I saw this on a week
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: where we'd already seen everything else we wanted to and
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: it was actually legitimately funny and we had a great time.
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: Watch it! Stop recording the show!
- 1:34:50Speaker 7: Go right now!
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: I try to deliver on these quotes. I assume that's
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: how she meant it. Alright, next up for expected to
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: hate but ended up enjoying. This one I got several times.
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For some reason, I
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: go into most every Tarantino movie expecting to not enjoy
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: his work. And I'm almost always end up pleasantly surprised.
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: You'd think I'd learn. And the final nominee that didn't win.
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: Star Wars Rise of Skywalker. With just a quote that said,
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: Thank you, J.J.
- 1:35:25Speaker 7: Abrams.
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: I think that's not how everyone took it, but they
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: were very pleased with J.J. for swinging it back away
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: from Ryan's weird direction he took it so alright are
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: we prepared.
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: Category is 2019 movie you expected to hate but ended
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: up enjoying.
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: This is questionable depending on the person and the winner
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: is Joker yeah I didn't fall into that category again
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: showing I didn't rig this cause I just recently I
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: didn't even bother in the theater cause it looked so
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: depressing and I finally got around to it when it
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: hit blu-ray and I'm like I don't take away from
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: everything else that's put into it. That performance is amazing. Like,
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: he really put so much into that performance. So I
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: hate that it also falls into the overall problems with
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: the movie, because I think it's mostly on the writing,
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: directing end of it. By the end, it's just too
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: pleased with him as a character. If we start off
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: looking at what's supposed to be the story of mental
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: illness and the way people treat other people and And
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: how it sort of shoved him down this road. But
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: by the end, it's like suddenly it's written and directed
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: by a 12-year-old boy that was like, awesome. Dude, you
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: see when he killed that guy? And then like riot
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: in the streets because the anarchy is awesome. It just
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: gets really pleased. I didn't know you could do that voice.
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: It's pleased with itself. And I can't. It got really
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: icky in the end there. It's just like you're just
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: way too happy with where this road ends up. And
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: that creeps me out. But everybody else ended up enjoying
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: it more than they expected. I went the other way.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: I didn't expect to like it, and I was right.
- 1:37:10Speaker 7: Nice.
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: My favorite outside category. I didn't come up with this.
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: It was a listener, and I stood by it every year.
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: The dreariest study of the human condition in a 2019 film.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: I like it. I'm sorry. I think it's funny. And
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: then you get every year, you're like, they'll nominate stuff,
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: and I'm like, no, you're right. That's exactly, I mean,
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: totally fits. Things like our first one. Parasite. Yeah, all right.
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: You can't argue that. How about the next one? Richard Jewell. Yeah,
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: all right. I can't argue. The Fanatic.
- 1:37:49Speaker 6: Oh, God.
- 1:37:49Speaker 8: Yep.
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: What?
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Check, check. All right. Uncut Gems. These are all contenders.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: Not the winner. I really, again, I didn't even question
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: this one. I assumed this was going to be the answer. Okay.
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: I don't think, I think I maybe have an idea.
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: I would think so.
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: Drearious study of the human condition in a film in 2019.
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: Goes to Joker.
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: Hmm. I mean, it's accurate.
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: Okay. I guess like on paper.
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: Given my rant, it's pretty accurate.
- 1:38:29Speaker 12: Execution well I think almost in the execution it fits
- 1:38:34Speaker 12: more so than on the screenplay yeah I'm like in
- 1:38:37Speaker 12: the way that it comes together it's more accurate than
- 1:38:40Speaker 12: maybe how it was conceived our.
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: Quotes are Joker I thought the trailer was amazing but
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: this movie was misery porn and so much acting oof
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: I quote you, oof. Also, the answer is Joker, Joker,
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: oh my god, Joker. It's probably going to win an
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: Oscar because the world is a giant trash fire now,
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: but this is the bleakest, darkest, most depressing movie I've
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: seen in recent memory, and the subject matter doesn't even
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: merit that heavy of a treatment. I'm a serious fan
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: of the comic books, but my god, I felt like
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: I was taking a bath to get rid of the
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: smell of grease paint, cigarette smoke, and misery. And just
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: for a bonus bit of crap, Thomas and Martha, Martha Wayne,
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: must decide to take their kid to a show and,
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: for some reason, cut down a dark alley, only this
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: time in the middle of a citywide riot? It's a
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: dumb movie, but hey, Martha's pearls won't rip themselves off
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: her neck, so let's get to it. All right, Joker.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: I love ranting for other people. Next up. Again, I
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: like coming back to the music. Favorite use of a
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: song in a 2019 film, and it does not have
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: to be created, and none of them ever are, because
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: people like using old songs. That's what half of our
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: filmmakers do now, is like, what kind of cool old
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: song can I pull and put in this? And I
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: think that shouldn't disqualify them. So, first up, the cover
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: of Pet Sematary by the Starcrawlers for the titular Pet Sematary,
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: I would assume. The cover of I Want to Hold
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: Your Hand, non-English, in Jojo Rabbit. I think the way
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: they worded it is J-Lo working the pole to Fiona Apple,
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: which I had to check.
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: It's criminal.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: Again, back to a previously mentioned, always be my maybe,
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: the song I Punched Keanu Reeves. Gets worked in here. Sadly,
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: not the winner. I didn't see this one coming, but
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: it's an awesome choice.
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: Favorite use of a song in 2019 film. I got
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: five on it by Luna's featuring Michael Marshall from us. I,
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: you know what? I think I might agree with that.
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't. The way they.
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: Worked it into the score was cool.
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: And that's the thing. I kind of remembered the song
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: from a million years ago, but like now when I
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: go back and I'm like, The music end of it
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: is so creepy. It's an almost little Nightmare on Elm
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: Street jangly thing going on in the background. It's kind
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: of perfect. I'm like, you didn't know at the time
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: you were writing a song for a horror movie, and
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: yet here we are years later, and it's a perfect
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: song for a horror movie. I was happy with that one.
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: There's a few music choices in that movie that are
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: pretty amazing. Particularly Fuck the Police.
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that got some votes. That's the thing.
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: I'm not going to go into too many of the
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: other options because I think I said this last year too.
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: We got so many great write-ins for kind of forgotten
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: songs that were awesomely used in movies. I'm like, I
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: just need to do a whole soundtrack episode of all
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: the things that people nominated that weren't the winners. So
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: I think we've got a whole bunch of them from
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: this year and last year that we need to just
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: play And it's an awesome song.
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I had a hard time with that category just
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: because I couldn't remember songs in a movie. It's just
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: a few minutes, and I might think it's really cool
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: at the time, but I'm not going to remember that
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: later on.
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: Yeah, unless it's like a Scorsese movie where he has
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: a full song playing over a whole scene. It's hard
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: to remember pop music. Because it's always the Rolling Stones. Yeah,
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: that's it.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: It's always the Rolling Stones.
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: Although the Irishman, I think he showed some restraint. I
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: guess he could technically because of the time period. Like
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: the Stones didn't really exist during most of the movie.
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: They were the pre-Rolling Stones. They found some other band
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: that just kind of sounded like it.
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: Exactly, yeah.
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: All right, now this one, I created a whole new
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: category based around a performance. I'm sitting in the theater.
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: I was like, oh my God, that was amazing. I'm
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: going to have to create a whole new category. And
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: then the person I was inspired by... Nobody nominated. What
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: the hell? So, as I created the non-main character that
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: completely steals the movie they were in in 2019, I
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: may just start referring to it as the Billy Lord Award.
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: Because I watch Booksmart and I'm like, okay, I like
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: these two girls. But Billy Lord just stole that movie
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: from me. Like, she is so funny and so... Oddly entertaining.
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: So entertaining that you don't question the fact that she's
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: in high school. Because I'm like, isn't she 30? I'm
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: pretty sure she's 30. Why is she in high school?
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: Maybe that fits her character even more so, knowing how
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: her character is in this movie. But yeah, that's the reason.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: I'm sitting there watching Booksmart going, good God, she just
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: totally stole this movie. And then no one else. So
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: the rest of the people voted for, again, I did
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: like this, the bear in Midsommar. you get points for
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: that that was funny it's good um this one's surprising
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: but there's a whole reason uh merlin in the kid
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: who would be king didn't expect to find a novel
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: reinvention of a character that's been in almost 100 movies
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: but i did it kept me from disowning my kids
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: after they picked this movie for family night so now
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: i guess i have to watch the kid who would
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: be king i previously mentioned And now it makes me
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: kind of want to see this movie more. I already
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: wanted to see Always Be My Maybe, but Keanu Reeves
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: has a cameo playing himself in the movie. I'm like,
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: damn it. Now I'm going to have to watch it.
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: And again, we haven't had a lot of weird characters
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: like this, so I can't argue with Babu Frick, which
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: is the weird little character in Star Wars. But I
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: like mostly the comment that comes with it is, Hands down,
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: this is the answer. Don't even count other people's opinions.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: They are wrong. They're very happy with Bobby Frick, obviously.
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: Let's see. We also got some Natasha Lyonne thrown out
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: for Ad Astra. A few other. Somebody specifically singled out
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: 3PO in the new Star Wars. I was like, I
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: didn't see that coming. I like him in that. I
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: think he's funny. But yeah, didn't see that coming. But
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: not the winner. So what are we up to?
- 1:45:12Speaker 3: Category is non-main character that stole the 2019 film in
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: which they are featured.
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: It is not Billy Lord, but I wholeheartedly agree with
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: this winner.
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: And the winner is Julia Butters as Trudy Fraser in
- 1:45:26Speaker 3: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: She's the little kid that he does the scene with,
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: that has the whole little conversation with him. That was
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: a good scene. She is so good. I mean, she's
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: one of those that is on a sitcom now and
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: is ridiculously funny in that, but again, that's a very...
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: You can be a funny kid on a sitcom and like, eh, whatever.
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: You can just show up for work and do that.
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: But to then turn around and also be in a
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: Tarantino movie, also be in this really amazing scene and
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: most of the dialogue and delivery is on your shoulders
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: because Leo's just kind of sitting there like losing his
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: mind at that point in his life. So yeah, that's
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: an amazing scene. And then it's a great scene when
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: she comes back and plays the actual like filmed a
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: scene with him. So yeah, Julia Butters. I agree. That's
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: a good choice. It didn't go the way I expected,
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: but I wholeheartedly agree. Alright, we're rounding things out. We're
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: coming to the big winners. Director. This is the most
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: impressive director of a 2019 film. First up, Anthony and
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: Joe Russo. Because those movies weren't going to direct themselves.
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: See, we're... I have my ideas about that. Well, like,
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: I think just people like their understanding of what direction is,
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: it's like way off. Like when people like immediately go
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: to like any Marvel movie for direction, like.
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: Those movies, I think most don't, they're directed by studios.
- 1:46:53Speaker 4: And if there, if there's any sense of like vision
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: or like, directorial style from the person who actually directed
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: it it's only in like a handful of scenes.
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: If ever i feel like there's maybe more so and
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: when when joss was doing them i feel like definitely
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: the joss ones have his feel to them they're specifically
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: this one is just such an undertaking but i think
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: like winter soldier feels like it's a different than all
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: the rest of them so like that's the first of
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: them coming in and kind of so these i think
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: are just more of Man, you did how much? It's
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: just the amount of juggling involved in making that film.
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: Points to him for that. Whether or not it has
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: a specific, distinct style that's different from other directors. But
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: I feel like there are other... Again, if they're not
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: so overwhelmed, I feel like Winter Soldier is a little
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: more focused. And it does kind of feel like something
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: different than all the other Marvel movies. But yeah, again,
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: just a nomination. But showing that we're a little better
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: than the Academy... We do have Greta Gerwig for Little Women. So, just,
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: you know, the Academy needs to get with the program,
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: is what I'm saying. Next up, Sam Mendes for 1917.
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: I believe at one point someone referred to it as
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: the hellscape that is 1917. Yeah, I'm not going to
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: argue that. I think it's an impressive feat more so
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: than a finished product. Because I don't know that the
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: film has anything to say for 1917. as big and
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: dramatic as this war movie is, but the things that
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: are going on every single minute are impressive. At the end,
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: it's just kind of like, yeah, that was good. It
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: doesn't have the weight that a huge war movie probably
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: should have, but minute to minute, it's an impressive feat
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: and accomplishment that they put together. The runner-up, and I
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: was surprised again in a different year, Quentin Tarantino. Again,
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: I had another, like, always forgot how much I genuinely
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: enjoy his films. Everybody kind of goes in going, eh, whatever,
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: shrug off Tarantino, but they refer to it as an
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: odd duck of a movie, but I enjoyed the entire film. So,
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: there you go. Once upon a time in Hollywood, can't
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: fight it. But, not the best Director of the Year.
- 1:49:10Speaker 4: Okay, Most Impressive Director of a 2019 Film. Bong Joon-ho
- 1:49:20Speaker 4: for Parasite. I can get with that. He directed the
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: shit out of that movie.
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: I was impressed that I expected some votes, but it
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: was all Tarantino the first half. And then all these
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: votes started. I was like, oh man, I think he's
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: going to pull it out.
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: It was done in a very simple style. For a
- 1:49:36Speaker 4: not simple story. It's a credit story. It's a credit
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: to the direction, how he gets so much of that
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: plotting in visually to convey to American audiences especially. I
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: think that's why it's done so well in the West.
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: It just continues to.
- 1:49:57Speaker 4: It's because the direction makes it easy to take it
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: all in.
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: It branches out because a new movie, every 20 to
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: 30 minutes, it's like, okay, I think I've got a
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: handle on what... Whoa, wait, what? And then there's another one,
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: and it just... it's so much going on in one
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: movie that yeah, to, to kind of get a handle
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: on it and even more impressive to make American audiences come,
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: you know, appreciate that. Cause we're not really known for
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: that sort of, we don't cross over much into the, uh,
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: the other side of the oceans. Hmm. All right. So
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: next up, we're rounding out the last two, the movies.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: So this is favorite, what you would consider mainstream movie
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: in 2019. First up, And you're not going to wonder
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: who put together this quote. Ad Astra. Takes you on
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: a real trip from the Earth to the Moon to
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: a space station to Mars to Neptune and back again.
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: Along the way, you get a lunar car chase, a
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: killer baboon, and dad issues. My wife looked at me
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: in the theater and said, they made this movie just
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: for you. Next up, 1917. As I said, hellscape of
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: World War I. Next is Knives Out. What a refreshing
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: original movie. It took a murder mystery genre and not
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: only modernized it, but utilized tropes while also subverting them.
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: It was funny, witty, and a great cast. And I
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: will watch Michael Shannon in anything, even when he's underutilized
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: in his terrible Superman script. Whenever I'm confused, that donut
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: speech echoes through my head, and I'm still waiting for
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: the sweater collection to drop. throw a callback for sweaters
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: this person wants sweaters really bad alright so the final
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: nominee and runner up and surprisingly not the winner Avengers
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: Endgame so not the most favorite mainstream.
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: Movie yeah I have an idea.
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: There was a couple of them kind of running the
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: show this year.
- 1:52:06Speaker 3: Category is favorite mainstream movie And the winner is Once
- 1:52:10Speaker 3: Upon a Time in Hollywood. Yep.
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: Yep. I do wonder if, again, we're such different from
- 1:52:20Speaker 2: the old Academy. I mean, they have pretty much, with
- 1:52:23Speaker 2: the exception of some screenplays, pretty much ignored him over
- 1:52:26Speaker 2: the years. So is this the year they make good
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: on it? Because they do love themselves. So he finally
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: made one that's just out and out about their town
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: and very like, like, again, no surprise to Tarantino fans,
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: but like painstakingly accurate how much he recreated the whole
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: little strip downtown. And like he convinced them to like
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: shut down a part of the highway to shoot one
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: of those. And like, they don't do that. Like they
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: are Hollywood and they don't do that. But Tarantino convinced
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: them to shut down part of the highway to shoot that.
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: So it would be like an old time 70s, not
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: that many cars on the road highway shot instead of
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: the wall-to-wall.
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: Definitely i would say it's definitely the best like driving
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: while listening to radio movies since like dazed and confused
- 1:53:11Speaker 4: like it's on that level of like you know that
- 1:53:16Speaker 4: just doing that really well.
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: It's one of those that i think grew on me
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: like i think as i left the theater i was
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: like yeah that was pretty good and then like as
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: it sat with me for the next few days i
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: And then more since then, I'm like, I think it's
- 1:53:31Speaker 2: so much underlying because on the surface, there's not much
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: to the story. And like a few of the characters,
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: we don't even finish their story. Like we don't even
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: really see much with where her life goes. She just
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: has a chance to continue, but like, we don't really
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: get much of her. Like, but the development, like the characters,
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: they spent so much time in this relationship with these
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: two guys. And like with, with all of these like
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: well written characters that, I don't know it's one of
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: those that stuff kind of settled in more as time
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: went on and I think I really like it now
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: as one of his films where initially it was like
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: yeah it's fine but yeah I think it's one that
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: kind of it takes a while to come to terms
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: with it and what he's even trying to do in
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: that movie. All right here we go the favorite indie
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: movie or what you would consider indie which is always
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: questionable in both of these categories and that's why I
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: put it on the nominee or not me I I
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: have nothing to do with this. I just tally them. So,
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: favorite what you would consider indie movie in 2019. Ready
- 1:54:34Speaker 2: or not, it's a horror comedy, which is one of
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: my favorite genres. It's very rewatchable. Samara Weaving is a
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: gift to this genre. She's won these people over. I
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: don't see that still. It is definitely worth seeing. Next up,
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: The Fanatic.
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: No.
- 1:54:56Speaker 3: No.
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: I just like that. Again, I think it, it puts
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: what we do in a different perspective. Like is the
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: fanatic ever going to come up on like an Academy list? No,
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: but like the people there's, there's like a whole nother
- 1:55:10Speaker 2: level of movie fans out there that like the Academy
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: doesn't realize exists and doesn't get, doesn't care. but it's
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: the same as last year. It's like the Academy doesn't
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: care about Mandy people, but the people watching Mandy are
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: watching The Fanatic this year. You're like, know what? This
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: is awesome. I get what's going on here more so
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: than most people, most Academy voters will say. Next up, Midsommar.
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: The Screaming Circle is my favorite scene of the year.
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: Are there Screaming Circle meetup groups? Maybe I should start one. Again,
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: knowing this person, I'm pretty sure they're going to. I
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: also was kind of surprised that didn't take it. I
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: think if you would have asked me earlier in the year, again,
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: knowing our crowd, I would have assumed Midsommar took the
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: whole thing. But again, as the year rounded out, it
- 1:56:05Speaker 2: didn't even come in second. The runner-up, we got a
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: lot of votes for the White House. Kind of came
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: in at the end and got a good build-up. But still...
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: Not the winner.
- 1:56:18Speaker 4: Favorite indie movie goes to Parasite. Nice. I'm improving the
- 1:56:26Speaker 4: Parasite love.
- 1:56:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:56:27Speaker 4: Getting towards the end.
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: I totally approve. I did not. I didn't. I was
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: so glad I didn't know what to expect with that.
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: I just heard all of the build up behind it
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: and everybody talking about it. But I didn't really even
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: know what the plot essentially was. So I'm kind of
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: glad I went in blind. and got to take those
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: weird turns as it gets thrown at you. So yeah,
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: I think it's an amazing movie. He did a great
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: job directing it. It's a really impressive cast, like everything
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: across the board. I think it's, it's impressive. So I
- 1:57:01Speaker 2: was glad to see that as the big winner. So
- 1:57:05Speaker 2: anything else to pass along? Bad taste. I disagree. I
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: like most of those movies that won. Some of them
- 1:57:14Speaker 2: are not the most obscure, but, you know, again, Parasite
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: just won. So, like, it's balanced out.
- 1:57:20Speaker 4: So it's a win-win.
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: And again, I think if you look at the nominees
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: more than the winners, sometimes you get more interesting stuff
- 1:57:27Speaker 2: that you're like, oh, wait, that came up a couple
- 1:57:29Speaker 2: of times. Maybe I need to check that out. So
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: I think, you know, the numbers game becomes the, okay,
- 1:57:35Speaker 2: everybody saw Avengers. Okay, everybody saw it once upon a
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: time in Hollywood, but yeah, it's the one-offs that get in.
- 1:57:40Speaker 2: It's the fanatics that slip in that you're like, wait,
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: I guess I have to watch this now. So yeah,
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: I think it's more like when Midsommar and Parasite gets
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: brought up. Anytime we can help these movies know that
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: they have an audience and know that people actually appreciated them,
- 1:57:58Speaker 2: I think that's important. Agreed.
- 1:58:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I was sad that the lighthouse didn't get more love.
- 1:58:04Speaker 3: Not for this in particular, but in general, it really
- 1:58:07Speaker 3: didn't get a lot of love.
- 1:58:08Speaker 4: Yeah, the people were really building it up, and I
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: thought it was awesome, and then just no one... I
- 1:58:14Speaker 4: think it was just too weird.
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: For most people. Yeah, I think people just don't know
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: what to do with it.
- 1:58:18Speaker 4: I can't see those, not to be ageist, but those
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: old Academy voters who are always just bitching in those
- 1:58:27Speaker 4: articles where they're like, this movie was overrated. I didn't understand. Like,
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: I just can't see that demographic getting into the light.
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: I was like, at all.
- 1:58:37Speaker 4: Um, which is, I mean, yeah, 1917 is going to win.
- 1:58:43Speaker 4: It's just that movie. That's just, it's like my mom
- 1:58:45Speaker 4: literally just texted me while we were talking. She's like,
- 1:58:47Speaker 4: just got on 1917. Think it's my favorite movie of
- 1:58:50Speaker 4: the year. So I'm like, it's going to win.
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: Like it's, she is an Academy voter is what you're saying.
- 1:58:55Speaker 6: Essentially.
- 1:58:56Speaker 4: What genre of movies is guaranteed to unite? Like, boomer
- 1:59:00Speaker 4: audiences and like you know like current generation people like
- 1:59:05Speaker 4: it's a war.
- 1:59:06Speaker 3: It's like a war movie that does extremely long one
- 1:59:09Speaker 3: take cinematography with.
- 1:59:11Speaker 4: Like with a cast of people who are like clearly
- 1:59:14Speaker 4: could only be like models in present time like not
- 1:59:17Speaker 4: a person who would be like a soldier in World
- 1:59:19Speaker 4: War I I don't.
- 1:59:20Speaker 3: Agree with that I think I think the guy that
- 1:59:22Speaker 3: ended up being the main character, I think he looked
- 1:59:25Speaker 3: like somebody that looks.
- 1:59:26Speaker 4: I'm thinking of, you know, you'd see a weird.
- 1:59:28Speaker 2: Black and white picture of a guy that looked like that.
- 1:59:29Speaker 4: I'm thinking of Dunkirk, because I feel like Dunkirk was
- 1:59:32Speaker 4: just like Phil was just like men's magazine covers of people.
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: That's the thing that doesn't make sense. Why did Dunkirk
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: not work? Like on paper, it should have swept the Oscars.
- 1:59:43Speaker 4: Oh, I thought it totally worked.
- 1:59:44Speaker 2: But I mean, no, as a successful, like it didn't
- 1:59:46Speaker 2: make the kind of money that this one did. It
- 1:59:48Speaker 2: didn't get the acclaim.
- 1:59:49Speaker 3: Because people don't like slow pacing.
- 1:59:51Speaker 4: You know what it was? It was the cross-cutting, the
- 1:59:55Speaker 4: time structure thing. I think people were confused by or like,
- 2:00:00Speaker 4: that's what I think 1917 is like. more of a
- 2:00:02Speaker 4: likely winner because it's very linear and easy to like
- 2:00:05Speaker 4: it's literally like this is yeah no joke there's no
- 2:00:09Speaker 4: way to get confused there's no way to kind of
- 2:00:11Speaker 4: like you know try to get your bear like also
- 2:00:16Speaker 4: i think any movie that has that kind of the
- 2:00:19Speaker 4: winner thing going for it is that's kind of like
- 2:00:24Speaker 4: you know that's what's popular now so i think it's
- 2:00:26Speaker 4: more likely to And.
- 2:00:28Speaker 2: The takeaway lesson is if you see somebody's plane crash,
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: just don't help them out.
- 2:00:32Speaker 3: Don't help them.
- 2:00:32Speaker 2: Don't help them. Let them burn in that plane.
- 2:00:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: So, I don't know.
- 2:00:40Speaker 4: Midsommar, I guess, was too weird.
- 2:00:42Speaker 2: See, that's too weird.
- 2:00:43Speaker 4: Too White House. Some of my favorite movies, just like
- 2:00:46Speaker 4: no one's going to.
- 2:00:47Speaker 2: And that's why I like doing this show every year.
- 2:00:50Speaker 2: I think we do find that weird niche audience that like,
- 2:00:55Speaker 2: is drawn to that stuff and likes that stuff. And
- 2:00:57Speaker 2: they do like, that's the favorites that we returned to
- 2:01:00Speaker 2: when we think about this year. But like, again, Academy
- 2:01:04Speaker 2: voters are going to pick very different things. So it'll
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: be 1917 or something. I don't know. But I, I
- 2:01:09Speaker 2: like that we can, we can kind of give a
- 2:01:11Speaker 2: shout out to the smaller movies or, or the forgotten
- 2:01:14Speaker 2: movies or lesser known performances and, you know, give people
- 2:01:18Speaker 2: a reason to go find them. So I think that's
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: the plan. We'll just have to do this again next year.
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: So now, much like Jacqueline, if you disagree with some
- 2:01:29Speaker 2: of these nominees or winners, well, then I ask you,
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: did you vote? Because I'd say a lot of people
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: listening didn't, and you have the opportunity to. So, and
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: here's the thing that's kind of frustrating sometimes is we
- 2:01:42Speaker 2: get a lot of votes, but everybody goes in different directions.
- 2:01:46Speaker 2: So a lot of times the winner will be one vote.
- 2:01:50Speaker 2: Many times this year, it came down to one final
- 2:01:53Speaker 2: vote that put this one over the top versus that one.
- 2:01:56Speaker 2: And you could be that vote. So, I mean, I
- 2:01:59Speaker 2: guess you can say this in those other elections and
- 2:02:01Speaker 2: whatnot out there, but who cares about all that? Foilers
- 2:02:04Speaker 2: is the important part. So your vote actually counts here
- 2:02:07Speaker 2: and you should vote next year. And that way, when
- 2:02:11Speaker 2: some of these things go the way maybe you want it,
- 2:02:15Speaker 2: you can be like, hey, I hope that happens. So
- 2:02:17Speaker 2: putting the call out now. Get involved with the Foilers
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: next year. Email me. Go to the website. You can
- 2:02:23Speaker 2: get involved. And for those who did, a big thank
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: you to everybody who voted and for everyone who's been
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: supporting us all year long this year and all of
- 2:02:33Speaker 2: these years in the past. So thank you. Spread the word.
- 2:02:36Speaker 2: If there's anybody out there who might like hearing some
- 2:02:38Speaker 2: of these movies discussed, send the episode out to them.
- 2:02:42Speaker 2: If you want to vote for us to win a
- 2:02:43Speaker 2: Rondo this year, please do. You can go email, listen
- 2:02:46Speaker 2: to that email, comment, or email me. I'll tell you
- 2:02:48Speaker 2: how to get to them. And with that, let's kick
- 2:02:51Speaker 2: off the best song winner. We got five on it,
- 2:02:55Speaker 2: and we got to get out of here. This is
- 2:02:58Speaker 2: The Loonies featuring Michael Marshall from us as we head out.
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: And otherwise, we will return next time. Same geek feed.
- 2:03:05Speaker 2: Thanks for listening.
- 2:03:06Speaker 3: Happy foilers.
- 2:03:08Speaker 2: Should be a national holiday is what I think. Good.
- 2:03:11Speaker 2: Nobody should have to go to work tomorrow because they're
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: home listening to the Foilers episode. Like, sorry, I can't
- 2:03:16Speaker 2: come in. Foilers, man. Gotta make some meatballs and tater
- 2:03:22Speaker 2: tots and listen to the Foilers.
- 2:03:24Speaker 4: I got some bucks on it, but it ain't enough
- 2:03:27Speaker 4: on it.
- 2:03:27Speaker 2: Go get the S, the T-I-D-E-S.
- 2:03:29Speaker 5: Nevertheless, I'm hella fresh, rollin' joints like a cigarette. So
- 2:03:43Speaker 5: pass it across the table like ping pong I'm gone,
- 2:03:46Speaker 5: beating my chest like King Kong And some wrap my
- 2:03:49Speaker 5: lips around the pony And when it comes to getting
- 2:03:51Speaker 5: another stogie Fools all kick in like Shinobi No, me
- 2:03:54Speaker 5: ain't my homie to begin with It's too many hands
- 2:03:57Speaker 5: to beat Probably let my friend hit fit Unless you
- 2:04:00Speaker 5: pull out the fat crispy Five dollar bill on the
- 2:04:03Speaker 5: reel before it's history Cause fools be having them vacuum
- 2:04:06Speaker 5: lungs And if you let them in, it'll breathe you
- 2:04:08Speaker 5: out of dumb I come to school with a tailor
- 2:04:12Speaker 5: on my earlobe Avoid all the flick teasers, skeezers, and weirdos.
- 2:04:16Speaker 5: Got me throwing off the land like where the bomb at.
- 2:04:18Speaker 5: Give me two bucks, you take a puff.
- 2:04:20Speaker 4: And pass my bomb back.
- 2:04:21Speaker 5: Suck up the dank like a Slurpee. The serious bomb
- 2:04:24Speaker 5: will make a nigga go delirious like Eddie Murphy. I
- 2:04:27Speaker 5: got more growing pains than Maggie. Cause homies nag me
- 2:04:30Speaker 5: to take the dank out of the baggie.
- 2:04:32Speaker 10: I got five on it. Got your four, let's get key.
- 2:04:37Speaker 10: I got five on it. Messing with that in the
- 2:04:41Speaker 10: weed I got five on it It's got me stuck
- 2:04:46Speaker 10: and I'm so bad I got five on it.
- 2:04:51Speaker 2: Let's go rap on the side. I take sacks to
- 2:04:54Speaker 2: the face whenever I can. Don't need no crutch.
- 2:04:57Speaker 11: I'm so keyed up till the joint be burning my hand.
- 2:05:00Speaker 5: Next time I roll it in a hamper to burn
- 2:05:02Speaker 5: slow so the ashes won't be burning in my.
- 2:05:04Speaker 3: Hand, bruh.
- 2:05:05Speaker 5: Poojies get hit, but they know they gotta pinch him.
- 2:05:08Speaker 5: Then I roll a joint that's longer than your extension.
- 2:05:11Speaker 5: Cause I'll be damned if you get high off me
- 2:05:13Speaker 5: for free. Hell no, you better bring your.
- 2:05:15Speaker 2: Host lift, chief. What's up, don't babysit that.
- 2:05:18Speaker 5: Better pass the joint. Stop hittin' cause you know you
- 2:05:21Speaker 5: got asthma. Crack the votey open, homie, and guzzle it.
- 2:05:24Speaker 5: Cause I know the weed in my system is gettin' lonely.
- 2:05:27Speaker 5: I gotta take a whiz test to my P.O. I
- 2:05:30Speaker 5: know I feel cause I done smoked major weed, bro.
- 2:05:33Speaker 5: And every time we with Chris, that fool rollin' up
- 2:05:35Speaker 5: a fatty. But the Tango Ray straight had me.
- 2:05:38Speaker 10: I got five on it. I got five on it
- 2:05:50Speaker 10: It's got me stuck and I'm so bad I got
- 2:05:55Speaker 10: five on it.
- 2:05:58Speaker 11: Hey, make this right, man. Stop at the light, man.
- 2:06:03Speaker 11: My yesterday thing got me hung off the night train.
- 2:06:06Speaker 11: You fade, I fake, so let's head to the east.
- 2:06:08Speaker 11: Hit the strode tonight, oh, so we can roll big
- 2:06:11Speaker 11: hot sheets. I wish I could fade the eight, but
- 2:06:14Speaker 11: I'm no budget. Still rolling the two, don't cut the
- 2:06:16Speaker 11: same old bucket. Foggy windows, soggy endo.
- 2:06:19Speaker 2: I'm in the land, get your smoke.
- 2:06:21Speaker 10: With my kid up.
- 2:06:22Speaker 5: In smoke, yuck, that spray you layin' down Up in
- 2:06:25Speaker 5: the OAK, the town, homies don't play around We down
- 2:06:27Speaker 5: to blaze a pound, this E's up Speed up through
- 2:06:30Speaker 5: the ESO, drink the VSOP up With the lemon squeeze up,
- 2:06:34Speaker 5: and everybody's roller I'm the roller, that's quick to fold up,
- 2:06:37Speaker 5: blunt out of a bunch of sticky doughs, yeah Hold up,
- 2:06:40Speaker 5: suck up my weed, it's all you need, kickin' feet
- 2:06:42Speaker 5: Cause we're IBs, we need to have like a poo-poo.
- 2:06:50Speaker 10: Today I'm going to show you how to make potato
- 2:06:56Speaker 10: filled pierogi.
- 2:07:20Speaker 7: Loved by all, made by few.
- 2:07:23Speaker 2: The reason, I know what a pierogi is. What made me,
- 2:07:27Speaker 2: it was almost the tie-in. Like, I kind of wanted
- 2:07:29Speaker 2: to get them anyway, but I was like, oh, there's
- 2:07:30Speaker 2: almost a movie tie-in there. I went to see the documentary,
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: Almost There, which if you haven't seen it, is awesome.
- 2:07:38Speaker 2: And then, in it, they go to, the whole reason
- 2:07:41Speaker 2: the movie starts, more or less, is they were just
- 2:07:43Speaker 2: shooting footage at, like, the pierogi festival in this little town.
- 2:07:48Speaker 2: And then they run into this artist and it like
- 2:07:52Speaker 2: everything from that point on. Then they're like, oh, this
- 2:07:54Speaker 2: guy's kind of fascinating and really talented. Let's do a
- 2:07:56Speaker 2: documentary on him. And then they start following him around
- 2:07:58Speaker 2: and they're like, oh. look at what's going on at
- 2:08:01Speaker 2: his house this is crazy and then about midway in
- 2:08:03Speaker 2: there's a whole nother oh really like it's fascinating and
- 2:08:07Speaker 2: it all started with pierogies so pierogi festival pierogies any
- 2:08:13Speaker 2: good reason to have.
