Latest / Foul Territory / Konnor Griffin extension talks heating up, Andrew Painter's debut, C.B. Bucknor's rough week continues
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is a big one on spreading rumors. This just
- 0:07Speaker 1: came out minutes ago on the show. While we were
- 0:10Speaker 1: chatting about whatever we were talking about, Buster Posey was
- 0:14Speaker 1: tweeting that the Pirates and Connor Griffin are deep in negotiations.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Remember Noah Hiles talked about this a couple of weeks
- 0:20Speaker 1: ago and how the Pirates were floating. I think a
- 0:23Speaker 1: low one hundred's offer at Griffin. We've seen a couple
- 0:27Speaker 1: prospect deals over the past week with Emerson and Pratt
- 0:32Speaker 1: for the Mariners and Brewers, respectively. The Pirates proposals are
- 0:36Speaker 1: closer in the range to the Corbin Carrol eight year,
- 0:39Speaker 1: one eleven mili deal. Griffin's camp wants something closer to
- 0:43Speaker 1: Roman Anthony's eight year, one hundred and thirty MILLI deal.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'll tell you this, Aja, If I'm the Pirates and
- 0:49Speaker 1: I think I have a shot to close in with
- 0:52Speaker 1: Connor Griffin right now, I am not going to wet
- 0:57Speaker 1: my pants over twenty million bucks. We're locking in a
- 1:00Speaker 1: superstar for a decade. It is not going to make
- 1:03Speaker 1: a difference. If you think he's going to be what
- 1:06Speaker 1: the industry thinks he's going to be.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Give him the damp. You know what I'm doing.
- 1:10Speaker 1: AJ Literally right now, I'm picking up the phone and saying, hey,
- 1:14Speaker 1: Bud one thirty one, it's yours. We're gonna give you
- 1:17Speaker 1: the number over Roman Anthony. I know Roman had played
- 1:20Speaker 1: an ounce of Big league ball. I don't give a crap.
- 1:22Speaker 1: We believe in you lock it in. Surplus value will
- 1:25Speaker 1: be off the charts.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Okay, two things. First of all, Buster Posey tweeted this,
- 1:29Speaker 3: I'd be amazing that he oops is in the uh
- 1:33Speaker 3: is in the pirates block or cod I mean that'd tampering.
- 1:37Speaker 3: That tampering. Oh, that would be tampering. I'd be smart
- 1:41Speaker 3: if he could get into other teams O bus there only.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it was fun Barston Judge, Hey, I give you credit.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I correct you guys. I want you club.
- 1:53Speaker 3: I was like when you said that, I was like, man,
- 1:56Speaker 3: Buster Posey knows what the pirates are doing. That is amazing.
- 1:58Speaker 3: He is everywhere. So anyway, and then the other thing is,
- 2:03Speaker 3: do you think if he signs this extension he's into
- 2:05Speaker 3: big leagues? No?
- 2:09Speaker 4: No, no, you buffoon? No you backwards had buffoon. He
- 2:15Speaker 4: hasn't even had success. Did you not even watch any
- 2:19Speaker 4: of us at bats? What is your problem? You look
- 2:22Speaker 4: immature with your headphones and your backwards hat.
- 2:26Speaker 5: There's no way that's how it works.
- 2:29Speaker 3: By the way, these made me looking churecrats because I
- 2:31Speaker 3: don't have unwired headphones. I'm old school, so I have
- 2:34Speaker 3: the wire. This is the wire, kids, This is actually
- 2:37Speaker 3: a wire that goes into the headphones that plugs into
- 2:39Speaker 3: the computer.
- 2:40Speaker 2: The wait, is that the thing they used, like to
- 2:43Speaker 2: plug in your phone to the wall.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Of those were those were curled up and you could
- 2:49Speaker 4: stretch them all the way across your house into two
- 2:52Speaker 4: other rooms.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yes, listen, I think the Pirates should do this. We
- 2:58Speaker 3: even heard rumors of this in spring training when I
- 3:00Speaker 3: was there. I heard they were closing it on deal.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I didn't think it was this high of a number.
- 3:06Speaker 3: But yes, he's twenty years old.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Do this? Do it?
- 3:13Speaker 3: Do it show the Pirates fans that you are actually
- 3:15Speaker 3: going to be able to keep somebody longer than the
- 3:18Speaker 3: five or six years if they're any good. So, if
- 3:20Speaker 3: I'm a Pirates fan, yes.
- 3:24Speaker 4: If I'm the Pirates, yes, And actually, aj he's not
- 3:27Speaker 4: twenty years old yet. We have to wait till April
- 3:30Speaker 4: twenty fourth, till he turns twenty, so he's still a
- 3:33Speaker 4: ripe old age of Austin Perzinski nineteen years old. So like,
- 3:38Speaker 4: just amazing, It is amazing, And this does more than
- 3:43Speaker 4: just lock up a player. Nobody knows what a player's
- 3:45Speaker 4: truly going to be. You have ideas, you have scattering reports,
- 3:49Speaker 4: all that stuff, but you know what it gives. Let's
- 3:51Speaker 4: say it's a nine year deal. It gives the fans
- 3:55Speaker 4: of Pittsburgh a guy that they can get behind for
- 3:59Speaker 4: nine years because at that price, you can afford him
- 4:03Speaker 4: the entire time. You don't have to look at it
- 4:05Speaker 4: and go, well, years seven, eight, nine, we're looking.
- 4:09Speaker 5: To get rid of them.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Like, this is a deal that to me not just
- 4:14Speaker 4: sets the franchise ahead because they'll have a shortstop that
- 4:17Speaker 4: I think is big League ready right now, but it
- 4:20Speaker 4: also will give the franchise fans something to get behind
- 4:24Speaker 4: and be like, I'm in on this, I'm in on
- 4:27Speaker 4: what the Pirates are doing right now. They spent a
- 4:30Speaker 4: little bit in the offseason. They brought in guys that
- 4:33Speaker 4: were like, hey, you know what, we're going to be
- 4:34Speaker 4: a winning team. So that's what we're building here. And
- 4:37Speaker 4: now you lock up their current star because you're not
- 4:41Speaker 4: going or their next star because you can't lock up
- 4:43Speaker 4: your current star. Sorry, Paul Skiens is going to cost
- 4:46Speaker 4: too much. And so they do that and it gets this,
- 4:49Speaker 4: It gets goodwill with the fans that I think are
- 4:52Speaker 4: some of the most underrated fans in the game. When
- 4:55Speaker 4: they come out in Pittsburgh and they sell out that stadium,
- 4:58Speaker 4: it is ruckus.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Here's my problem, AJ.
- 5:03Speaker 1: We saw this in the off season with the Pirates
- 5:05Speaker 1: when they were going after some players. I know they
- 5:08Speaker 1: landed some and they definitely aren't improved team, but it
- 5:11Speaker 1: is still fair to be critical about an approach. When
- 5:14Speaker 1: you're going after someone like Kyle Schwarber, you can't go
- 5:17Speaker 1: look at what the market says. I think the same
- 5:20Speaker 1: thing has to occur here with someone like Connor Griffin.
- 5:23Speaker 1: If you look at your team and you look around,
- 5:27Speaker 1: you at where the industry values this player. The industry
- 5:31Speaker 1: thinks this is the next great superstar in our sport,
- 5:35Speaker 1: you go off comps. These deals get done off of comps.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Roman Anthony looks like he's going to be a star
- 5:41Speaker 1: in our sport. Connor Griffin should be talked about in
- 5:44Speaker 1: that echelon. As Anthony was five seconds into his big
- 5:47Speaker 1: league career and signed a deal like that. AJ, if
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm Connor Griffin, I can't ask for one fifty plus,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but I can ask for Roman Anthony's deal to a t.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I can ask for that deal and a penny over
- 5:58Speaker 1: because it's also X amount of months later and inflation
- 6:02Speaker 1: and how these deals get comped, they build up over time.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So I think, if I'm his camp and the pirates
- 6:08Speaker 1: are hard stop at say one fifteen or even one twenty,
- 6:11Speaker 1: I'm not doing it until it gets to one thirty
- 6:14Speaker 1: something because we know it will and it will get
- 6:16Speaker 1: there pretty quickly.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So do you agree with that?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Or like, let's say right now they're at that stopping
- 6:21Speaker 1: point where the pirates are like one fifteen, and I
- 6:23Speaker 1: get it, you're still getting rich. You're getting one hundred
- 6:25Speaker 1: something Like in my mind, I think he deserves to
- 6:28Speaker 1: get the comp that one of the other better top
- 6:30Speaker 1: prospects in the sportcuts when he hasn't really touched the
- 6:33Speaker 1: bigs at that point. And I'll find it while you're talking.
- 6:35Speaker 1: But Roman Anthony was five seconds into his career.
- 6:38Speaker 3: You know what he should get? What one more million
- 6:41Speaker 3: than Roman? Yeah? More, he should get more. So that's it,
- 6:45Speaker 3: he should get more. If he's as good as in
- 6:47Speaker 3: the Pirates and Key's as good as they think he's
- 6:49Speaker 3: gonna be, and he's going to be the face your franchise,
- 6:51Speaker 3: he's going to be this, then he should get more
- 6:52Speaker 3: than Roman Anthony, because that's how these things work. The
- 6:55Speaker 3: guy before you set the bar, and then the next
- 6:57Speaker 3: guy that is that guy gets a little bit more.
- 6:59Speaker 3: So he actually, to be honest with you, I think
- 7:01Speaker 3: he should get a little bit more. And if you're
- 7:02Speaker 3: Bob nutting, I think you should pay him. Pay the man.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Bob what they say in rounders, by the man his money,
- 7:08Speaker 3: ATA man his money.
- 7:09Speaker 1: He signed it on August sixth, talking about Roman Anthony,
- 7:12Speaker 1: he was forty six games in and it was eight years,
- 7:15Speaker 1: one hundred thirty million dollars. A twenty thirty four club
- 7:17Speaker 1: option for thirty million dollars would make it nine years,
- 7:20Speaker 1: one hundred and sixty million dollars. You're getting a decade
- 7:23Speaker 1: of what could be one of the better players in
- 7:24Speaker 1: baseball for what would be a massive discount. The easy
- 7:28Speaker 1: comp to always look at is ronald'cunya junior making one
- 7:31Speaker 1: hundred versus Flatty Junior making north of five hundred they
- 7:35Speaker 1: came up around the same time. That is five x
- 7:38Speaker 1: plus five x plus for the cost of Lattie versus
- 7:41Speaker 1: the cost of Ronald d'cunya Junior. That's the kind of
- 7:44Speaker 1: bargain you can get if you sign guys like this.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Some of you're going to watch this and say this
- 7:49Speaker 1: is crazy money for a nineteen year old. That's fine,
- 7:51Speaker 1: but that is how the sport is looked at right now.
- 7:54Speaker 1: So Kratz, do you agree if you're him, here's the
- 7:57Speaker 1: crazy part. The Red Sox in Roman Anthony already all
- 8:00Speaker 1: of the work for you. I don't think he can
- 8:02Speaker 1: make a strong case for oh I'm going to be
- 8:03Speaker 1: better than Roman Anthony, but he should definitely be in
- 8:05Speaker 1: the same echelon. So, like what AJ said, you basically
- 8:08Speaker 1: can just carbon copy with the Red Sox gave Roman
- 8:11Speaker 1: and hand it out here and everybody should be happy.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Don't get nickeledon don either side shouldn't get Nickelton dome
- 8:17Speaker 4: on this.
- 8:18Speaker 5: It's it's very clear cut. This is what happens. This
- 8:23Speaker 5: guy set the bar.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Maybe you can argue that in spring training you are
- 8:26Speaker 4: offering low one hundred million, Yeah, low hundreds of millions
- 8:31Speaker 4: of dollars. Now you see what Colt Emerson signed for.
- 8:36Speaker 4: So you're like, okay, well this is fair both sides.
- 8:40Speaker 4: And you think I'm going to be a star. You
- 8:42Speaker 4: need me in the big leagues right now, let's go
- 8:46Speaker 4: and get this done to me, I agree. I think
- 8:48Speaker 4: it's one hundred and thirty million plus or you don't
- 8:52Speaker 4: sign it.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you. Do you think that there's league
- 8:57Speaker 2: pressure because he's technically not in the big leagues yet.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Or shouldn't be. Would the league would want him to
- 9:06Speaker 3: sign this deal?
- 9:07Speaker 2: Agreed?
- 9:08Speaker 3: I would think the league would want the Pirates to
- 9:10Speaker 3: sign him to this deal because they're going to be like, man,
- 9:13Speaker 3: if this guy becomes the dude we think he is,
- 9:16Speaker 3: then you're actually saving the rest of the team's money.
- 9:18Speaker 3: So I see what you're saying, Scott, But I would think, again,
- 9:22Speaker 3: I don't know that because I'm not a league guy,
- 9:24Speaker 3: so I don't know what they think and do. Trust me,
- 9:26Speaker 3: I've questioned many of many of things the league has
- 9:29Speaker 3: done over the years, so I don't know, but I
- 9:31Speaker 3: would think that they would be totally.
- 9:33Speaker 2: On board with this because it raises the number for
- 9:36Speaker 2: the pre MLB debut, so they.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Also saved them. I agree, but a ton of money
- 9:42Speaker 3: in the long term. If you look at it. You
- 9:44Speaker 3: brought up Laddie, but you got five hundred million, right
- 9:46Speaker 3: compared to what Accuoni got, Plus he got what four
- 9:49Speaker 3: years of arbitration, which is almost like another fifty million,
- 9:53Speaker 3: so it cost him. You know, if they would have
- 9:55Speaker 3: signed Latti when he first came up to one hundred
- 9:57Speaker 3: and thirty millions, it would have saved the Blue Jays
- 10:00Speaker 3: four hundred million dollars.
- 10:02Speaker 1: It's a massive difference, and the Blue Jays actually had
- 10:04Speaker 1: multiple opportunities to do that, right you look at Vladdie,
- 10:07Speaker 1: you go back and look at Mookie Betts.
- 10:09Speaker 2: These are guys that actually were receiving multiple.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Offers over the course of their career and at least
- 10:15Speaker 1: claim that they would have signed them, but the price
- 10:17Speaker 1: kept going up based on how well they performed, plus
- 10:21Speaker 1: how the contracts were being handed out to the rest
- 10:23Speaker 1: of Major League Baseball. So in conclusion, the deal should
- 10:27Speaker 1: be a little over what Roman Anthony got, and I
- 10:31Speaker 1: think it'll happen this week.
- 10:34Speaker 2: This episode is brought to you by Fox One.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Go get that new app stream Baseball, stream Football, stream
- 10:41Speaker 1: World Cup action you'll be watching.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Oh definitely, I can't wait. I actually want to try
- 10:45Speaker 3: and get to a game. But well, and there, I'll
- 10:47Speaker 3: still have my Fox one app. I'll have MLB, the shows,
- 10:50Speaker 3: the great shows that Fox has, college football that I love,
- 10:53Speaker 3: college basketball, they have at all. This really is the

- 11:12Speaker 1: day free trial today offers our subject to change.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Go to Fox one for complete terms and conditions. Fox
- 11:18Speaker 2: one streaming. Now what's good? All right, we're back.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Let's talk about Andrew Painter's debut while we worked through
- 11:23Speaker 1: some tech fun Kratz take it away, baby, because the
- 11:27Speaker 1: Phillies look like they have something good and it took
- 11:30Speaker 1: them a minute to get it all together. Tommy John
- 11:33Speaker 1: surgery for Andrew Paynter wiped out twenty three, basically all
- 11:37Speaker 1: of twenty three and twenty four comes back last year,
- 11:41Speaker 1: gets a good amount of innings in Triple A. The
- 11:44Speaker 1: era is over five, and if you're looking from the
- 11:47Speaker 1: outside and you're say a Phillies fan or a baseball fan,
- 11:50Speaker 1: it's not like you're gonna watch every single Andrew Painter start.
- 11:52Speaker 2: So you're just like, Oh, I don't know, is this
- 11:54Speaker 2: guy the guy we thought he was going to be.
- 11:58Speaker 1: He was number one or two pitching prospect in baseball
- 12:01Speaker 1: a few years ago. I think we got a taste
- 12:04Speaker 1: of that answer for the Phillies, who pulled off a
- 12:07Speaker 1: three to two win over the Nationals, and we're off
- 12:10Speaker 1: to like a slow ish start if you can count
- 12:11Speaker 1: that in the first several games. So it was a
- 12:13Speaker 1: nice pick me up, and it makes their rotation look
- 12:16Speaker 1: really nice when Painter is going to essentially replace Rangers
- 12:20Speaker 1: Suarez and then Wheeler's going to bump time on Walker
- 12:22Speaker 1: out when he comes back. So your thoughts on five
- 12:25Speaker 1: and a third, four hits, one run.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Eight strikeouts. Also, it was four hits, three of them singles.
- 12:32Speaker 1: One was a double that was like basically a pop
- 12:34Speaker 1: up over Trey Turner's head past second base, and then
- 12:37Speaker 1: the run scored when whoever was coming in was at
- 12:41Speaker 1: Banks came in and gave up gave up the run
- 12:44Speaker 1: charged to his account. So basically that line is even
- 12:48Speaker 1: better in person than what it looks like on paper,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and it looks pretty damn good on paper.
- 12:53Speaker 4: All right, So you have to go back as a
- 12:55Speaker 4: non Phillies fan, you have to go back to why
- 12:58Speaker 4: is Andrew Painter a guy that came of off a
- 13:00Speaker 4: terrible year in Triple A last year statistically wise, and
- 13:04Speaker 4: then missed the two previous seasons essentially with Tommy John surgery?
- 13:08Speaker 4: Why is you know, everybody just believing so much in
- 13:12Speaker 4: this guy? To me, it's because of what you saw yesterday.
- 13:15Speaker 4: It's the fact that his athleticism is something that zero
- 13:21Speaker 4: like pitch you know, pitch making gurus who are like,
- 13:26Speaker 4: everybody needs to throw this this hard and this way.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Like.
- 13:30Speaker 4: His mechanics are very clean for a six foot seven pitcher,
- 13:36Speaker 4: he's very young. He uses us athleticism to get down
- 13:39Speaker 4: the mound really well. He's not Zach Wheeler, but he
- 13:42Speaker 4: has that type of length where he's able to extend
- 13:45Speaker 4: and when he locate, he can locate his pitches because
- 13:50Speaker 4: of his ability to just move athletically. Some big, tall,
- 13:55Speaker 4: long guys, they're like everywhere and it takes them a
- 13:58Speaker 4: long time to figure out their mechanics and eventually find it.
- 14:02Speaker 4: This is a guy who learned it early, went through
- 14:05Speaker 4: the injuries, and now he's finally making his big league debut,
- 14:09Speaker 4: and he's had a lot of time to prepare for
- 14:11Speaker 4: this moment, through all the injury, through all the rehab,
- 14:15Speaker 4: through all the struggles last year in Triple A, and
- 14:19Speaker 4: he adds something that this team could desperately need. I'm
- 14:23Speaker 4: not saying I'm not overreacting from the first time through
- 14:26Speaker 4: the rotation, but Lozardo had a stinker. Aaron Nola gave
- 14:31Speaker 4: you a quality outing, not the dominant Aaron Nola. And
- 14:36Speaker 4: Tywan Walker has been Tywan Walker that he's been.
- 14:39Speaker 3: For the last three years.
- 14:40Speaker 4: You know, lover hate him, Philly, he's gonna be that guy.
- 14:44Speaker 4: And so really you're looking at it, you go, crap.
- 14:47Speaker 4: If Painter doesn't do well, oh great, now we got
- 14:51Speaker 4: a sinch as we got to rush Wheeler back. Phillies
- 14:54Speaker 4: will be fine. They're gonna score some runs. But this
- 14:57Speaker 4: was a really amazing outing for the Phillies when they
- 15:01Speaker 4: needed to pick me up from their rotation. And to me,
- 15:05Speaker 4: he's going to need to face some good competition, and
- 15:07Speaker 4: that's lineup's not the best. But I like what he
- 15:10Speaker 4: did against the better hitters in Abrams and Lyle and
- 15:17Speaker 4: would I like how he faced those guys and was
- 15:20Speaker 4: able to attack him attack them with all of his pitches.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it doesn't hurt when you get your first big
- 15:28Speaker 1: league strikeout against James Wood, who's one of the better
- 15:31Speaker 1: rising young players in the sport too, So it's a
- 15:34Speaker 1: nice hey, I've got.
- 15:36Speaker 2: This moment for him.
- 15:38Speaker 1: And then just overall, I mean, he was able to
- 15:41Speaker 1: put together a really nice performance to get himself into
- 15:43Speaker 1: the sixth inning. What would that be like for you
- 15:46Speaker 1: if you were trying to psychologically coach a guy who
- 15:50Speaker 1: has that kind of stuff. He's twenty two years old.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And also I would say this is probably a good thing.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Or disagree with me if you want.
- 15:59Speaker 2: He's not the kid that just was.
- 16:01Speaker 1: I mean, I know he was thirteenth overall pick, but
- 16:03Speaker 1: not he didn't just have all rosy story up to
- 16:06Speaker 1: the major leagues like he actually did have the long
- 16:09Speaker 1: term injury, the rougher results year last year.
- 16:13Speaker 2: So he's been punched a little bit.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Sometimes guys come up, they come up so quickly nowadays
- 16:17Speaker 1: they really haven't gone through any adversity for.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Sure, And sometimes the first adversity that elite stars and
- 16:25Speaker 4: you're a first round pick, you're probably a elite star.
- 16:27Speaker 4: You don't go through the same things that set you know.
- 16:31Speaker 4: We're having Max Munsey on the show here in a
- 16:34Speaker 4: bit like his whole his whole rise to the big leagues,
- 16:37Speaker 4: and then once he got to the big leagues, wasn't
- 16:40Speaker 4: like this dream scenario. It had Andrew Paynter not gotten hurt,
- 16:44Speaker 4: had he not gone through the rehab process in a
- 16:46Speaker 4: little struggles last year, they were talking about him possibly
- 16:49Speaker 4: being in the big leagues at twenty years old. But
- 16:52Speaker 4: when he heard himself in spring training, they were like,
- 16:55Speaker 4: whoa this guy it was? I think it was a
- 16:57Speaker 4: Tigers they faced. This guy's outing was unbelievable, was poised,
- 17:02Speaker 4: his ability to throw strikes. It's just as where withal
- 17:06Speaker 4: with his body and his mechanics, like he had made
- 17:08Speaker 4: a huge jump.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Hey, better than box scores. Let's run it.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Let's start with the Red Sox who fell yesterday to
- 17:23Speaker 1: the Astros. Another Jordan Alvarez freaking tank to the second deck.
- 17:27Speaker 1: But the thing that stood out from that game in
- 17:29Speaker 1: terms of virality was Mark Wegner forgetting the count and
- 17:33Speaker 1: he apologized afterward, totally.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Accountable for it.
- 17:36Speaker 1: AJ was a swinging strike for camp Smith that should
- 17:39Speaker 1: have been strike three, ends up eventually walking in the AB.
- 17:43Speaker 1: I do want to show this tweet as we're talking
- 17:45Speaker 1: about it with Alex Korra sitting Narvaiez today. I don't
- 17:50Speaker 1: think this has anything to do with it. But my
- 17:52Speaker 1: question is, while we're talking about the catcher not in
- 17:54Speaker 1: the game, where is the catcher and where's the pitcher
- 17:57Speaker 1: and where is everybody when something like that happens. I
- 18:00Speaker 1: don't think it's just on the umpire in that case.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And this is the tweet for the Red Sox game today,
- 18:05Speaker 1: Chorus saying, uh, narvaias Carlos out of the lineup, who
- 18:09Speaker 1: is one of the you know, better catchers in the
- 18:10Speaker 1: sport already from a breakout twenty twenty five.
- 18:13Speaker 2: But Chorus said it's not a physical thing.
- 18:16Speaker 1: That was according to Narbias, and he was asked if
- 18:18Speaker 1: it was disciplinary, and he basically just said he wanted
- 18:20Speaker 1: to keep it internal. So we don't really know what's
- 18:23Speaker 1: going on there. But anyway, your thoughts, well, first of.
- 18:27Speaker 3: All, I mean why Narvaia's was bench, I don't know.
- 18:30Speaker 3: I can't comment on that. So if he was benched
- 18:32Speaker 3: or not bench, whatever, that's good that alex cor is
- 18:34Speaker 3: keeping it in house. And then second of all, I
- 18:37Speaker 3: anytime that I was catching or hitting and the catcher
- 18:40Speaker 3: and or pitcher and or hitter asked what the count was,
- 18:43Speaker 3: I'm like, I got this, dude, he's not he's not engaged.
- 18:45Speaker 3: At no point in my career do I think I
- 18:48Speaker 3: ever asked what the count was because I was so
- 18:50Speaker 3: locked in and I would forget the outs.
- 18:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Possibly, but when I was catching, especially if I forgot
- 18:57Speaker 3: the count, then there was I was like not there. Mentally,
- 19:00Speaker 3: I knew every pitch, every count, what was happening, where
- 19:03Speaker 3: we were at. We'll be thrown these guys. So yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 3: I find it odd that everybody on the field could
- 19:07Speaker 3: have forgotten the count. Forget the catcher. There were times
- 19:09Speaker 3: where people like, oh, it's ball four, and I'm like, well, no, no, no,
- 19:12Speaker 3: it's ball three. Let's go back, And there was times
- 19:15Speaker 3: where we had to check with different people. So yeah,
- 19:17Speaker 3: anytime I saw someone forget the count, I was like, oh,
- 19:19Speaker 3: we got this guy.
- 19:21Speaker 1: And also my bad just on narvaias so he was
- 19:24Speaker 1: supposed to start today and he was taken out. Wang
- 19:27Speaker 1: was starting yesterday. I just want to make sure I
- 19:28Speaker 1: cleared that part out. So it was technically that's on
- 19:30Speaker 1: Connor Wang and the Red Sox staff and all of that.
- 19:34Speaker 1: So it didn't have to do with mister Narvia's and
- 19:37Speaker 1: yesterday's game. That one didn't get by him, so it
- 19:39Speaker 1: must be something else going on there. Krats, Have you
- 19:42Speaker 1: ever forgotten the count in a big league game?
- 19:45Speaker 5: Not that I can think of.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I'm not as confident as AJ is about it, but
- 19:48Speaker 4: I am totally on board with what AJ said.
- 19:52Speaker 5: I see it in high school.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Now I see it in college as I'm watching college games,
- 19:57Speaker 4: like if you're not locked in enough to know that count,
- 20:00Speaker 4: especially when you play like or you watch high school games,
- 20:04Speaker 4: you know, yet there's a kid running the scoreboard like
- 20:06Speaker 4: they miss certain things.
- 20:08Speaker 5: You can't just look at the scoreboard like that is.
- 20:11Speaker 4: That's the times when I've had the discussions with the
- 20:14Speaker 4: umpires like that scoreboard's wrong, Like there's like that's wrong,
- 20:19Speaker 4: like I know it's too too and then they then
- 20:22Speaker 4: I've had times where umpires are.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Like I don't know I'm like, well, where's your clicker?
- 20:27Speaker 5: What's going on with your clicker?
- 20:29Speaker 4: Like, to me, that's a it's a pretty egregious mistake.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Like that's a punch out, that's strike three. How the
- 20:38Speaker 4: pitcher missed it too? Like, there's definitely, like AJ said,
- 20:42Speaker 4: like a little bit of a level of we're not
- 20:45Speaker 4: quite locked in enough here for a big league baseball game.
- 20:50Speaker 2: The Red Sox also learned some other tough news this morning.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Tristan Cass has had a setback, so he's going to
- 20:57Speaker 2: miss more time. Here's the tweet from Tim He who
- 21:00Speaker 2: does a great job covering the Red Sox on a
- 21:03Speaker 2: daily basis.
- 21:04Speaker 1: He said setback in the form of sore ribs. Alex
- 21:07Speaker 1: Chorus said, he is shut.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Down for a while.
- 21:11Speaker 1: We have to slow it down, so AJ, the injury
- 21:14Speaker 1: was continued for Cossus. He has not played much the
- 21:17Speaker 1: last few years.
- 21:18Speaker 3: But what was the real I don't I'm sorry, I've
- 21:20Speaker 3: kind of lost track of him other than him running
- 21:22Speaker 3: around like Spider Man put the mask on and doing
- 21:25Speaker 3: all the other stuff that he does. Like, what was
- 21:27Speaker 3: the injury? I know he hurt his leg a couple
- 21:30Speaker 3: of years running down the first lower body.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Yeah, ruptured Pateeller tendon. That was last year, second last year. Yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 1: after a month into the season.
- 21:41Speaker 3: And then how did the ribs come up? Where did
- 21:43Speaker 3: the rib injury come up?
- 21:45Speaker 2: That's a recent thing that just popped up that caused this.
- 21:48Speaker 1: You know, that's the current setback here, because otherwise, I mean,
- 21:51Speaker 1: they were definitely hoping to get him back, you know,
- 21:54Speaker 1: in the first half, let alone maybe within the next
- 21:56Speaker 1: few weeks.
- 21:57Speaker 2: I think that was.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Always the plan was, I want to say, April early
- 22:00Speaker 1: May kind of range, even if you're giving them a
- 22:02Speaker 1: little extra time. So in my mind, they've prepared for
- 22:07Speaker 1: life without him. I mean, that's why you pick up
- 22:10Speaker 1: contrarasts in the off season, isn't it. I mean, they
- 22:12Speaker 1: technically don't have open space for him, and I think
- 22:14Speaker 1: the Red Sox in the off season technically moved on
- 22:17Speaker 1: and said it would be a bonus if he's a
- 22:19Speaker 1: bench bat for us.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yeah, they're not counting on him. That's why you go
- 22:23Speaker 3: get Wilson Matures, because you're counting on him to play
- 22:26Speaker 3: first base. They're not planning on Tristan Casts to help him.
- 22:30Speaker 3: I mean, listen, I mean I watched a little bit
- 22:33Speaker 3: of the Yankees or about the Yankees, the Dodgers Guardians
- 22:38Speaker 3: game off night and the laughter who's off to hot
- 22:39Speaker 3: star foul ball office foot and had to come out
- 22:41Speaker 3: of the game. I don't know. I didn't hear any
- 22:42Speaker 3: update on him, but he was another guy that was
- 22:45Speaker 3: constantly injured in the minor leagues. Like you can't help
- 22:48Speaker 3: anybody if you're constantly hurt. I'm not questioning anybody's paying tolerance,
- 22:51Speaker 3: but at some point you got to be about some substance.
- 22:54Speaker 3: You can't just be about you know this, and then
- 22:57Speaker 3: I have this and I do this and I do that.
- 22:59Speaker 3: At some point she got to get on the field
- 23:01Speaker 3: and play, and the later was off to a great
- 23:02Speaker 3: start this year. Unfortunately, he you know, fell him off
- 23:06Speaker 3: his foot last night. But if you're Tristan costs until
- 23:08Speaker 3: you get back on the field, like I don't even
- 23:10Speaker 3: want to hear about it, like it's I'm sorry, like
- 23:13Speaker 3: you just it's when guys don't want to do interviews
- 23:15Speaker 3: and don't want to do things when they're hurt because
- 23:17Speaker 3: you just want to hide in the background, unil you
- 23:18Speaker 3: can get back out there and play. That's the way
- 23:20Speaker 3: I feel that, you know, Tristan costs is at this
- 23:23Speaker 3: point is is, yes, could he help the Red Sox possibly,
- 23:25Speaker 3: But I don't know because he never is healthy enough
- 23:27Speaker 3: to play ever the game.
- 23:29Speaker 4: The game always moves on injuries, non injuries, prospect, failed prospect,
- 23:35Speaker 4: whatever it is. For Tristan Costas, I watched him. I
- 23:38Speaker 4: played for I worked with the Red Sox just as
- 23:42Speaker 4: like a you know, kind of like a special assistance
- 23:45Speaker 4: to player development. And I got to go in and
- 23:46Speaker 4: I got to watch him work in Double A. I
- 23:49Speaker 4: got to watch his like daily routine. I went to
- 23:51Speaker 4: watch the Double A team. I'm not sure how many times,
- 23:54Speaker 4: but it was quite a few times more than the
- 23:56Speaker 4: other levels. And I would say he does a lot
- 23:59Speaker 4: of things right. He's worried about his nutrition, he gets enough,
- 24:03Speaker 4: he talks about getting enough sleep, his hydration, like things
- 24:06Speaker 4: you don't normally see at a Double A level, let
- 24:08Speaker 4: alone from like a twenty one twenty two year old kid.
- 24:12Speaker 5: So I think he has a lot of the right
- 24:14Speaker 5: things in place.
- 24:16Speaker 4: It's now a matter of how can he figure out
- 24:19Speaker 4: how to stay on the field and be a contributing
- 24:22Speaker 4: member year in and year out to this Red Sox lineup,
- 24:26Speaker 4: or the Red Sox will have to move on because
- 24:30Speaker 4: every day you're not out there as a player, not
- 24:32Speaker 4: Tristy Costas, but every day you're not out there as
- 24:33Speaker 4: a player, the team has to move on.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Very few players are so good that.
- 24:38Speaker 4: They're like, we're gonna hold everything up here, We're just
- 24:41Speaker 4: gonna find a little stop gap and then we'll be
- 24:44Speaker 4: back when you're back. That that doesn't happen, So that's
- 24:48Speaker 4: a tough, tough issue with injuries, prospects, and young players.

- 26:00Speaker 1: I'm show I think the most talked about human in
- 26:04Speaker 1: baseball right now is c B.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Buckner. Would you guys agree, yeah?
- 26:08Speaker 3: I mean he's always been talked about inside people. People
- 26:13Speaker 3: have known CB. You trust me, there have been crats
- 26:16Speaker 3: will agree. Crats will tell you this. There was a
- 26:18Speaker 3: long time where you would look at the umpire sheet
- 26:20Speaker 3: and you'd be like, oh, we get CB this weekend.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Behind the plate, someone's getting ejected. So I mean, listen.
- 26:26Speaker 3: CEB is a nice guy to talk to, but he
- 26:29Speaker 3: had his He had some not good days behind the
- 26:31Speaker 3: plate at times.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and we'll get to his next for a behind
- 26:36Speaker 1: the plate unfortunate situation for him. But let's start with
- 26:39Speaker 1: what we were just showing everyone. He missed a call
- 26:43Speaker 1: AJ last night that was a true head scratcher for everyone.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Jake Bower's foot on the bag, No problem.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Didn't touch it end up challenging, not even close, Scott.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Said, didn't touch the bag and touch it? I agree
- 27:00Speaker 2: you Actually, you know what that part didn't even surprise me.
- 27:03Speaker 1: That CB was off on the call and that if
- 27:04Speaker 1: you look at his eye contact, it was at home played,
- 27:07Speaker 1: or maybe there were somebody in the seats that was
- 27:09Speaker 1: more interesting than the game.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Clearly didn't touch the base. I don't know what you're
- 27:13Speaker 3: looking at, but I'm looking right at it.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Tell me what you see on the picture on the
- 27:17Speaker 1: left side of the screen, Aja explained to the podcast crowd.
- 27:21Speaker 3: I see Jake Bowers clearly missing the bass and c
- 27:23Speaker 3: B Bucker totally getting this call correct because he is
- 27:26Speaker 3: looking directly at the base where he should be, instead
- 27:29Speaker 3: of at the ball that's going flying all over creation.
- 27:32Speaker 1: It was a very April Fool's answer of you right there,
- 27:35Speaker 1: Jake Powers stepped on the middle the middle of the base.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Do you know what the craziest thing for me is,
- 27:41Speaker 1: AJ they it took about during that game because I
- 27:44Speaker 1: was checking it out live. It took about two minutes.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I didn't count exactly and I was like, what the
- 27:49Speaker 1: hell is going on here? Two minutes for New York
- 27:52Speaker 1: City to give an answer. I was like, it's one
- 27:54Speaker 1: thing for c B to be wrong. We deal with
- 27:56Speaker 1: that all the time. I was like, that should be
- 27:58Speaker 1: a pen second turn round.
- 28:01Speaker 4: They were, they were, they were challenging another game. There
- 28:04Speaker 4: were there was something something going on. There was no like,
- 28:08Speaker 4: it's not something has to have happened. The whole fact
- 28:11Speaker 4: of this play is the fact that CEB's not looking
- 28:14Speaker 4: at the right place. We just had this issue in
- 28:17Speaker 4: our in the high school game that I was coaching
- 28:19Speaker 4: in now yesterday, but it was last Friday. A kid
- 28:23Speaker 4: missed first base on a home run. My first reaction
- 28:27Speaker 4: is I look to watch the guy touch the base.
- 28:29Speaker 4: It's like something that just innately happens. He missed his
- 28:33Speaker 4: first base. And the second glance I give is to
- 28:37Speaker 4: the home plate umpire, who has that play, not the
- 28:40Speaker 4: base umpire. Base umpire has the home run call, and
- 28:42Speaker 4: I look at it and the home the home played
- 28:44Speaker 4: umpire is doing exactly what CEB is doing, watching the ball.
- 28:50Speaker 5: What is it?
- 28:52Speaker 4: And so if you're not looking at the right thing,
- 28:54Speaker 4: to me, you have to go back and hey, let's
- 28:57Speaker 4: let's revisit this. Cebe like, let let's revisit the basics
- 29:01Speaker 4: that you used to work on when you were coming
- 29:04Speaker 4: up through the minor leagues and then into the big leagues,
- 29:06Speaker 4: because this is a blatant This isn't like ah man,
- 29:10Speaker 4: I kicked it. I kicked it. The timing was terrible.
- 29:13Speaker 4: This was I kicked it because I'm not looking at
- 29:16Speaker 4: the right place. And if umpire is not in the
- 29:18Speaker 4: right location, if they're not shifting, it makes all the
- 29:21Speaker 4: other umpires look bad. So they don't want him to
- 29:23Speaker 4: screw up like this either.
- 29:26Speaker 3: But by the way, speaking of this, I've seen this
- 29:30Speaker 3: happen a couple of times, and I don't know if
- 29:31Speaker 3: it's ever happened in the big leagues, but high school games,
- 29:34Speaker 3: kids miss home played on home runs because they're so
- 29:36Speaker 3: excited to do their jump around, their boom, their whole thing.
- 29:39Speaker 3: It happened a few years ago against us in high school,
- 29:43Speaker 3: and we appealed it and the guy was called out
- 29:44Speaker 3: and we were on the road and almost a you know,
- 29:48Speaker 3: a melee broke out because they couldn't believe it. And
- 29:50Speaker 3: then last night the high school my son went to
- 29:53Speaker 3: a kid hit his first career homer and I sent
- 29:55Speaker 3: a picture to the dad of Hey, nice homer, congrats.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Make sure he touches homeplate. And I ain't saying the
- 30:02Speaker 3: kid missed home play, but if he touched it, it
- 30:04Speaker 3: was by a tenth of an inch with the tip
- 30:06Speaker 3: of his cleat like we see on the ABS challenge
- 30:08Speaker 3: marks Now it was bad.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Like just step on the.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Middle of the plate. I don't understand why we this
- 30:13Speaker 3: is such a hard concept to get. Just step right
- 30:16Speaker 3: in the middle of the play. You can jump up
- 30:18Speaker 3: and down on home plate if you want. Just make
- 30:20Speaker 3: sure you touch it right.
- 30:22Speaker 1: That seems to be the easiest part of the sport.
- 30:24Speaker 1: It's the one part that everyone could do. It is
- 30:26Speaker 1: really hard for the average human to hit a baseball,
- 30:29Speaker 1: but it is very easy for anyone to step on
- 30:32Speaker 1: a base Also, aj isn't Cebee's job at first to
- 30:37Speaker 1: be watching the foot hit the bag. And I guess
- 30:41Speaker 1: for if potential obstruction, like why is he wandering? You
- 30:46Speaker 1: know ass people say into left field as a term,
- 30:48Speaker 1: like he is wandering into outer space with his eye
- 30:51Speaker 1: contact And we all saw that. And that's where I
- 30:54Speaker 1: get to a point and say, is he passed his
- 30:57Speaker 1: prime right?
- 30:58Speaker 2: And he started doing this at nineteen nine, ninety nine,
- 31:01Speaker 2: and the league essentially bought out Angel Hernandez. They might
- 31:05Speaker 2: have to do this here with CB. It's one thing
- 31:07Speaker 2: to have the issue behind the plate, and again we'll
- 31:09Speaker 2: get to his next game behind the plate here, which
- 31:12Speaker 2: he really isn't going to participate in. But does the
- 31:15Speaker 2: league need to step in and make sure that he's okay.
- 31:19Speaker 3: No, they'll recommend him, they'll take away postseason stuff. I
- 31:23Speaker 3: think isn't not how they do it. But I don't
- 31:25Speaker 3: know if they're going to make him retire.
- 31:28Speaker 2: I basically did that to Angel Hernandez.
- 31:30Speaker 3: And Hernandez also got tired of hearing about it. Angel
- 31:32Speaker 3: Hernandez was the brunt of it for so long, and
- 31:35Speaker 3: now CV is about to It seems like CEB is
- 31:37Speaker 3: about to take that. Angel Hernandez didn't go because he
- 31:40Speaker 3: wanted to go. Angel Hernandez went because he was probably
- 31:43Speaker 3: just tired of hearing it everywhere he looked in every
- 31:45Speaker 3: place anyone that recks like oh, Angel Hernandez or stumpire
- 31:49Speaker 3: and Baseball. Even though I'll be honest with you, I
- 31:51Speaker 3: never really had a problem with Angel Rnandez. Angel was again,
- 31:55Speaker 3: I never really had a problem with CB because you
- 31:57Speaker 3: kind of knew what you were going to get when
- 31:58Speaker 3: you went into the game, just didn't let it bother you.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Now the problem is with abs and with replays and
- 32:04Speaker 3: all that, they're just put out there more in the
- 32:08Speaker 3: open than they would have been in years past.
- 32:13Speaker 4: This is this is agregious in my opinion, it's egregious.
- 32:16Speaker 4: I think Angels stuff he was if he was pushed
- 32:19Speaker 4: out of the league. You know, maybe he got sued
- 32:23Speaker 4: maybe you know, I mean that he he sued the
- 32:25Speaker 4: league before because he didn't feel like he was being
- 32:27Speaker 4: treated fairly. I think there's different things that go to me.
- 32:31Speaker 4: The CB play is egregious in the sense of it.
- 32:35Speaker 4: It would be like somebody who's a bad driver, Well,
- 32:38Speaker 4: you speed and you keep getting caught speeding, that's not
- 32:41Speaker 4: a bad driver. Like if you're just if you're making
- 32:45Speaker 4: right turns on rent, like you're just blatantly not doing
- 32:49Speaker 4: things correctly. That's way different than calling balls and strikes
- 32:54Speaker 4: in correctly. So like a play like this, I think
- 32:57Speaker 4: there has to be some type of reprimand not a suspension,
- 33:00Speaker 4: but just accountability. We have the abs to keep the
- 33:04Speaker 4: umpires accountable. Players are in this league because they do well.
- 33:08Speaker 4: They get sent down. When they don't do well, they're
- 33:11Speaker 4: being held accountable. The umpire should be held accountable when
- 33:14Speaker 4: you're caught in the wrong position looking over here at
- 33:18Speaker 4: the ballfly and your one job on that play is
- 33:22Speaker 4: to see the play at first. The home played umpire
- 33:25Speaker 4: has the ballflight in case it goes out of play,
- 33:28Speaker 4: in case it's illegally touched by the catcher, whatever there is.
- 33:32Speaker 4: He has that Like, obstruction isn't even CEB's call. The
- 33:37Speaker 4: entire play all the way up to the base is
- 33:40Speaker 4: the home played umpire's call. So if there's obstruction, if
- 33:42Speaker 4: it something hits the run or something, CB was caught
- 33:47Speaker 4: watching the ball not the base.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's why it's concerning going forward where he's
- 33:57Speaker 2: going to be. So he went super.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Viral last weekend and we covered it at length. He
- 34:04Speaker 1: had twenty six missed calls. He was six for eight
- 34:06Speaker 1: on being challenged and getting overturned. I think the most
- 34:11Speaker 1: anticipated game of the year in the first weekend change
- 34:15Speaker 1: of this season was him behind the plate for start
- 34:18Speaker 1: number two or for home plate ump number two appearance
- 34:23Speaker 1: for him this year, unfortunately. Now this is where we
- 34:26Speaker 1: take a turn and get the human side of things.
- 34:28Speaker 1: We hope that he's okay. Adam Mcalvey tweeting this while
- 34:31Speaker 1: our show is going on, and this is probably why
- 34:33Speaker 1: a bunch of people just jump back to our show,
- 34:35Speaker 1: because some people were watching just to see how crazy
- 34:37Speaker 1: it would get and how much animosity there would be
- 34:39Speaker 1: between him and Kevin Cash and Pat Murphy who are
- 34:42Speaker 1: already were talking and laughing about CB behind the plate.
- 34:45Speaker 2: CB was struck. So he was struck flush on the
- 34:49Speaker 2: face mask by a foul tip.
- 34:51Speaker 1: So he was removed from the Race Brewers game that
- 34:54Speaker 1: started maybe thirty ish minutes ago, about forty minutes into
- 34:59Speaker 1: the showtime for us.
- 35:01Speaker 2: So we hope that he's okay. In all seriousness, of.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Course, of course, this is not a personal thing at all.
- 35:07Speaker 4: This is a no.
- 35:08Speaker 3: I mean as a player people, you know, which hopefully
- 35:12Speaker 3: people never wish bad things upon other people. I mean personally,
- 35:17Speaker 3: I'm talking about now. Professionally, you can root against somebody
- 35:20Speaker 3: or say someone's not doing a good job. But I
- 35:22Speaker 3: hope in life no one ever roots against somebody on
- 35:25Speaker 3: a personal level to get her to do bad. All
- 35:27Speaker 3: that stuff. That's just that's just not cool for me.
- 35:31Speaker 2: No, and most of the replies to Adam's tweet, we're
- 35:35Speaker 2: in that realm.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Hey I hope this guy's okay, or hey, I know
- 35:40Speaker 1: I talk a lot of shit about this guy, but
- 35:43Speaker 1: as a human being, I hope he's okay.
- 35:44Speaker 2: So the CB, we're thinking about it. We're going to
- 35:47Speaker 2: do our show. We're going to be critical of umps.
- 35:48Speaker 1: That's part of what we do, right, is that we
- 35:50Speaker 1: just talk about the game baseball the way it should
- 35:52Speaker 1: be covered.
- 35:52Speaker 2: But hopefully it's okay.
- 35:53Speaker 1: So we and yes, for purposes of watching that game,
- 35:57Speaker 1: it's not CB behind the plate. So we just saw
- 35:59Speaker 1: the one time here really behind the plate from him
- 36:03Speaker 1: where it was messy, and I'm sure he'll.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Get back at some point and that'll be the storyline again.
- 36:07Speaker 1: One more thing from that series that I just want
- 36:09Speaker 1: to shout out because we won't have time anywhere else.
- 36:11Speaker 1: And then we'll get to our next guest. Shane McClanahan
- 36:14Speaker 1: is back. He had not pitched in a major league
- 36:16Speaker 1: game since August of twenty twenty three, about a thousand
- 36:21Speaker 1: days out of baseball. He's gone through a lot. He
- 36:24Speaker 1: was at the time a top three or five pitcher
- 36:28Speaker 1: in the sport. People thought he's going to be a
- 36:30Speaker 1: sight young contender every year. Just like krat said, the
- 36:33Speaker 1: game doesn't wait for you. It's crazy how quickly it
- 36:35Speaker 1: can pass you. If injuries occur, hopefully he'll be able
- 36:38Speaker 1: to stay on the field. Now let's do some shout outs.
- 36:52Speaker 1: We'll start with the Aids, last team to get on
- 36:54Speaker 1: the board this year, so they're one in four. They
- 36:57Speaker 1: won in Atlanta. I was referring to that game where
- 36:59Speaker 1: Drake Baldwin and I think he's got three homers already too, AJ,
- 37:02Speaker 1: But you know who has four homers? Shay Bangaliers, a
- 37:05Speaker 1: former Braves organization dude making his old organization pay. He
- 37:10Speaker 1: looks really good to start the year. And I know
- 37:12Speaker 1: you mentioned him as the next great potential extension candidate
- 37:16Speaker 1: for the A's or.
- 37:18Speaker 3: Kurt or Nick Kurtz. Now the different Langoleers got some
- 37:21Speaker 3: years in now, right, So there that's a little bit
- 37:23Speaker 3: of a difference. But I mean him are Kurts. If
- 37:26Speaker 3: I'm an A's fan, I'm like, hey, you're signing all
- 37:27Speaker 3: these guys, how about these other two dudes that are
- 37:29Speaker 3: pretty good? So theys actually have some stuff to look
- 37:32Speaker 3: forward to. They for some reason, they just always suck
- 37:34Speaker 3: at the beginning of the year. I don't know what
- 37:36Speaker 3: we joked with Katsay, my buddy Kotsay about this. It's
- 37:39Speaker 3: when we saw him in spring training. But gosh, if
- 37:42Speaker 3: they I mean they have they have some legitimate talent
- 37:45Speaker 3: on this team. Now, today they ran into Chris Sales,
- 37:47Speaker 3: so you know that didn't go so good. But the
- 37:50Speaker 3: A's have legitimate talent on this team.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Yeah, Langoleers is easily the most underrated catcher in the game.
- 37:59Speaker 4: I think the fact that you add power, he's the fastest.
- 38:03Speaker 4: Now that JT's lost a step, JT can still run,
- 38:07Speaker 4: but Shay Langeleers is the fastest sprint speed. He's now
- 38:11Speaker 4: started the season off with four dingers, and I think
- 38:15Speaker 4: I think he might be pricing himself out of Oakland.
- 38:19Speaker 4: He's got just over three years of service time, so
- 38:24Speaker 4: he's going to go to arbitration two more times here
- 38:27Speaker 4: after after this year. I think he's making five points something.
- 38:32Speaker 4: I should look it up before I say it. But
- 38:34Speaker 4: he's only going to get more expensive. But now you're
- 38:37Speaker 4: talking about what does that look like like? What does
- 38:39Speaker 4: that look like the other catchers in the game. Is
- 38:42Speaker 4: he as good as Will Smith? No? But if the
- 38:46Speaker 4: if Sacramento not Oakland, if Sacramento has to pay close
- 38:51Speaker 4: to Will Smith money for him to buy it out,
- 38:53Speaker 4: like you'd have the catcher of your of the future
- 38:56Speaker 4: for the A's or else. He will be a major,
- 39:00Speaker 4: huge coveted piece that could possibly be traded. Not this year,
- 39:04Speaker 4: but bookie it next year.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Another team to talk about out West. The Diamondbacks took
- 39:12Speaker 1: down the Tigers. That was one of the better games
- 39:14Speaker 1: on Tuesday night, and we saw the rookie debut of
- 39:16Speaker 1: Jose Fernandez, who went two for four with two home runs,
- 39:20Speaker 1: including the go ahead shot in the bottom of the
- 39:22Speaker 1: eighth that led to the seven to five win for
- 39:24Speaker 1: the Diamondbacks. Aj they were down five to one in
- 39:26Speaker 1: the bottom of the eighth, Fernandez was already one home
- 39:29Speaker 1: run into his performance. Casey Meies was fantastic, by the way,
- 39:32Speaker 1: for the Tigers, the bullpen led it up.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Corbyn Carrol had a big two run.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Knock and then Fernandez with the two run home run
- 39:40Speaker 1: off a ninety two mile an hour Kenley Jansen Cutter.
- 39:43Speaker 2: I mean that kid had the debut of anyone's dreams.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I think there have been less than ten people who
- 39:49Speaker 1: have made their debut on a two homer game. I
- 39:50Speaker 1: think the number was eight ever in baseball history.
- 39:55Speaker 3: Yeah, the Tiger's bullpen just fell afar best and Kevin
- 39:58Speaker 3: Jansen gave up six last night. You're not gonna see
- 40:02Speaker 3: that very often, but it happened last night and the
- 40:04Speaker 3: Diamondbacks took advantage of it. And good for Fernandez. And
- 40:07Speaker 3: what a debut. Like you said, Skuy, you don't see
- 40:09Speaker 3: that very much. Listen something. I mean, I remember my debut.
- 40:13Speaker 3: I only got to a bat, so I didn't get
- 40:16Speaker 3: two homers, that's for sure.
- 40:19Speaker 4: A lot of people don't know about Jose Fernandez, and
- 40:21Speaker 4: I'm one of them. When I watched his first homeer
- 40:24Speaker 4: live yesterday, I was like, Wow, this dude in the box,
- 40:28Speaker 4: he looks like create a player. So I went on
- 40:29Speaker 4: Baseball Reference. He's listed. Clearly, Baseball Reference does not know
- 40:34Speaker 4: a lot about him because he's listed sixty three one
- 40:37Speaker 4: sixty five. My guy has put on a few pounds
- 40:40Speaker 4: since Baseball Reference just checked in with them. But the
- 40:43Speaker 4: fact that he had two homers in his big league debut.
- 40:46Speaker 4: Right now, he is the twenty three thousand, six hundred
- 40:49Speaker 4: and thirty six player to play or throw a pitch,
- 40:53Speaker 4: taking a bat or throw a pitch in a big
- 40:55Speaker 4: league game, and less than ten guys have done that
- 40:58Speaker 4: in their debut is absolutely incredible.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Wow, he does not look one sixty five.
- 41:08Speaker 5: He's not one sixty five.
- 41:09Speaker 4: That is a large, creative player that was signed out
- 41:14Speaker 4: of Venezuela and like kind of floundered for a few years.
- 41:17Speaker 4: Like it's okay if it takes guys a little bit
- 41:20Speaker 4: longer and burst on the scene. That's the way to
- 41:24Speaker 4: make sure you're staying in the big leagues and maybe
- 41:26Speaker 4: getting a few more at bats here and there.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Yep, a couple things on our way out.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Number one may Day is back today, so you'll get
- 41:33Speaker 1: a live Trevor may coming up after our show, which
- 41:36Speaker 1: is done in about ninety seconds. To make sure you
- 41:39Speaker 1: check it out. Trevor does a lot of what we
- 41:41Speaker 1: do as a one man show, so give him some love.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Stay on the ft YouTube channel while you're watching a
- 41:46Speaker 1: little Day Baseball. That would be nice, Thank you very much.
- 41:50Speaker 1: Kratz hats and then we have one fun story with
- 41:53Speaker 1: the Orioles after that.
- 41:55Speaker 4: I mean Max Months he came on, so I had
- 41:56Speaker 4: to wear my spring training hat and our guy Clinton
- 41:59Speaker 4: behind us scenes. Been grinding all day, so this will
- 42:02Speaker 4: make a little bit of a little bit of happy
- 42:05Speaker 4: day for him.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Very nice, good job Climp behind the scenes today. And
- 42:09Speaker 1: then our finisher here the Orioles loss to the Rangers.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Pete Alnso hit his first homer with the team. It
- 42:15Speaker 1: was against his former teammate Jacob de Grom, but Craig
- 42:18Speaker 1: albern As, his son and his travel ball team showed
- 42:21Speaker 1: up at Camden Yards before the game and they stole
- 42:23Speaker 1: the show. There's Pete signing autographs for the kids. The
- 42:27Speaker 1: kids shirts say he was our coach first. Whoever put
- 42:31Speaker 1: that little idea together? Aj A plus, that's pretty awesome.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Whoever that was, whether it was Craig's wife or someone
- 42:40Speaker 3: in Craig's family or whatever, that's that's pretty awesome.
- 42:44Speaker 4: The team's probably from New England, so they're just happy
- 42:48Speaker 4: that they saw some sunny days. Believe me, New England,
- 42:51Speaker 4: they ain't seen much sun now, so they're glad they
- 42:53Speaker 4: were in Camdon Yards yesterday.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Hey, North, I'm in the Northeast this week.
- 42:59Speaker 5: It's nice.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Yesterday was sneaky. It's nice. Yeah, you guys know what
- 43:02Speaker 2: you're doing a.
- 43:03Speaker 3: Few months others perfect and I'm just saying no.
- 43:08Speaker 2: A few months a year Northeast, they know what they're doing.
- 43:10Speaker 2: A few months a year, I'm not sure yet. Still
- 43:14Speaker 2: figuring that out. You got to take days from each
- 43:16Speaker 2: month kind of like roll over, and then clump.
- 43:18Speaker 5: Them all together and just pick them thegether.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's tough, but everyone, there's a ton of
- 43:24Speaker 2: day baseball going on, so check that out, but also
- 43:27Speaker 2: listen to Trevor May and then we will see you
- 43:30Speaker 2: all tomorrow. The one stocks are playing to that, I
- 43:34Speaker 2: don't think they're playing until next week.
